‘Simply the Best!’

T

his year’s Donkey Derby and Classic Vehicle Rally was the best ever. Not only did the sun shine all day but the people of Shoreham (and Southwick, Lancing, Worthing…) turned out in their droves. Adur East Lions were kept busy from 7 in the morning till 7 in the evening but enjoyed every minute and they were helped by a number of ‘Friends of Lions’. Impromptu picnics spread like wildfire and these were supplemented by the delicious home-made cakes from the tea and cake tent. Reptylers were a new attraction and proved popular with youngsters although Lions appear to have an aversion to snakes! Tim Loughton, MP opened the event and the Chairman of the Council, Joss Loader, presented the winner of the final race with her rosette. The profit from the day was over £6200 – the best ever. Every penny of that amount will go back out to charitable causes and service activities; nothing is kept back as all administration costs of the Lions’ organisation come from the subscriptions members pay. If you would like to be involved next year or perhaps become a ‘Friend of Lions’ then get in touch with the club. You can ring 0845 8337356 or further information is available online – log onto the website www.adureastlions.org.uk, or visit the Facebook page www.facebook.com/adureastlionsclub

Writing Your Life Story

M

any of us regret not knowing more about our parents and grandparents. Photographs are fine while they’re still around to explain who’s who, but will a dusty album mean anything to future generations? Writing your life story can help your children or grandchildren learn more about you. You might not have been famous, adventurous or influential but your family and friends will find your story as interesting as any celebrity autobiography. If you fancy having a go, look back through old diaries and photographs, listen to music, or visit an old address or school to trigger memories. Asking yourself some key questions, such as who the significant people in your life have been, can also kickstart the process. Before you start to write, start by selecting up to 20 key life events. List all the important and not-so-importantbut-memorable things that have happened during your life and think about how you can link them to create a narrative. It’s important to include your feelings and reactions to what’s happened in your life; remember that your book isn’t just about dates and facts, it’s an emotional story. Not necessarily a writer, but still want to tell your story? Make an audio or video recording, or if you need more help, a life story

t’s the last few weeks of the summer term and we are busy finishing final tunes for end of term performances. It is such a rewarding time for me, students, parents and teachers to hear just how far our little musicians have progressed in a year, and to see how proud they are of themselves, and of course us of them! Teaching young children to play a musical instrument for me, is a bit like making a cake together. We look at all the musical ingredients separately. What fingers will we use to make the different sounds? What letter name does each sound have? Is it long or short ? Loud or quiet? What does it look like when it is written down? Each week we look at a different ingredient, and over the term we gradually add and mix them together to create a new piece that each child can play independently and as a group performance. Just like a delicious freshly baked cake… seeing the delight and sense of achievement in children as they play their instruments and master new tunes, can only leave us all with a warm feeling and food for big and little souls alike. “TooTs & DooDS” at The Shoreham Centre is a unique class for children age 4-7. Using NUVO instruments - TooTs and DooDs - with a dynamic teaching method ‘Kinderflute.” Both designed

writing and publishing service such as Memory Lane Books can make the process much easier. They will chat to you about your life to gather stories, before shaping them into a narrative and printing your own hardback book. Helen Gregory, of Memory Lane Books, explains: “The whole experience of life story writing can make you feel quite emotional. Penning and publishing a book can also be daunting – while everyone has a story to tell, many of us need help telling it.” So go on, dig out those boxes of photos and diaries kept in dark and lonely places and start putting those memories down on paper. And don’t put it off to the distant future or it might be too late! www.memorylanebooks.co.uk helen@memorylanebooks.co.uk – 07799 764414

to make learning an instrument easier for young children. The class bridges the gap between preschool music classes and the more traditional learning of wind instruments that children generally start from around age 8. The DooD has a rich tone of a clarinet and the TooT is similar to a fife, but children can begin by playing it with a recorder like mouth piece. When ready they can then move easily from these instruments onto flute, clarinet and saxophone. Kinesthetic learning and movement is at the centre of all Happy Tunes classes. Unlike more traditional ways of learning an instrument, children are not expected to stay still for long as they skip, run and dance, clap and draw their way to learning to play new tunes. Prices start from as little as £4.95 in school making our classes up to 60% cheaper than traditional one to one instrument lessons. Instruments are provided also freeing parents from the cost of buying an instrument. An emphasis on fun and enjoyment just in the class, means there is also no need to for parents worry about practice at home. Bring your young musician to one of our FREE Taster Classes in JULY. Monday 2nd and 9th July. Room 7, The Shoreham Centre. 3.45pm. Places are limited so please book online or call Lisa 07874 668706 to reserve your place. Happy Tunes group music classes include Flute Age 6+. TooTs and DooDs. Age 4-6. Little Goose Ocarinas. Age 3-4. All are available in participating schools, nurseries, and community venues in Shoreham. They are also available for home educators. All classes involve fun games, activities, and tunes to spark a lifelong love of music making. A wonderful way for your child to start their musical journey – something every child deserves! Thinking Ahead…

J

une is on its way out and the longest day is now past us, so as we enjoy the summer weather, which to date has been pretty warm and fairly dry on the whole, the plants in the garden are already starting their slow wind down as the sunlight, so vital for their vigorous growth is on the decline. But don’t despair, there’s plenty of time for us to get the most out of everything. As most plants in the garden will be romping away in the height of the growing season, it’s well worth giving them an extra boost to keep them healthy and happy. Most plants whether they are flowers or vegetables, will benefit from a

liquid feed. These are inexpensive and are simply mixed in with water in the watering can. They will give them a fastacting feed. You really can notice the difference when you use these types of feeds but be careful not to overdo it. You won’t end up with the beanstalk from Jack and the Beanstalk, but you will end up with a plant that will quickly outgrow its root system and usually end up with poorer results. So, follow the instructions carefully! Following the instructions is a pretty good tip for most things in the garden. Most growers and manufacturers give a wealth of information, whether it be advice on a plant label, on how big a plant will grow, where it likes to be, to instructions on weedkiller on how to mix it and how to and when to apply it. It never ceases to amaze me how few people bother to read them, and we often see plants in completely the wrong place, struggling, with the labels still attached. Another favourite I often see is plants or areas of lawn killed of by weedkiller or lawn feed, because people haven’t followed the instructions properly. Save yourself some grief (and in one instance we were called back to replace a new lawn a husband had inadvertently killed off with weedkiller and his wife was refusing to talk to him!) and read and follow the instructions. They do help! Thinking ahead in the garden, it’s a good time to collect seeds from your favourite flowers as blooms die off or take cuttings to produce more plants. Its fairly easy to do either and an inexpensive way to produce extra plants. It’s also very satisfying. If you collect the seeds dry them off and keep them in a cool dry container such as an envelope. Make sure you label them! One of the easiest and quickest cuttings to take is a tomato plant. Simply cut off a healthy branch from the plant and immerse the end in a jar of water. Within a week to ten days it will have produced sufficient roots to enable it to be planted in the ground giving a free plant. Not all cuttings are quite so simple and its worth doing a little reading up before having a go, but its still worth the effort. It really is one of the best times in the garden, so make the most of the evening light, do the odd little simple job, which is a great way to unwind after work and take some time to look around and take in what’s around you. It goes too quickly so make the most of it. ark Oakley M Any Garden Limited

Naturally Cool Some simple and all-natural ways that you can refresh and revitalise during the summer.

T

he summertime can be great for increased energy levels and more daylight hours means we can often be busier in general with social and other engagements, it can also be a good time for us to slow down relax and enjoy ourselves. It’s sometimes all too easy to get overheated, stressed and agitated by the warmer temperature and busier work or social schedules. Especially if we’ve had a work commute, been out in the sun for too long and have a touch of sunstroke, these can zap our energy and mood. Here’s some ways to help cool us down, keep our energy revitalized and refreshed during the summer months. 1. Make a cooling spritzer of lavender floral water, rose water, cooled down peppermint tea or perhaps all three! Place them in a glass spray bottle and use it to refresh your face and body through the day. This can be wonderful to take away on holiday to refresh after a long journey or when in a hot country. The natural waters will also gentle nourish, hydrate and cool the skin. 2. Make a herbal foot bath, using a drop each of Spearmint/ Peppermint, Lemon, Lemongrass essential oils diluted in a tablespoon of plain oil such as coconut, sunflower or olive oil. Add a spoon of Epsom salts and this will help to detox, relax the muscles in the feet and the whole body. This is great for your feet after a long day and will renew you ready for an evening of dancing! Use Lavender, Chamomile and Frankincense for a more relaxing foot bath before bed. 3. Make your own aftersun treatment – to make a natural and very effective aftersun you will need Aloe Vera gel, either purchase a high percentage aloe content one or squeeze the juice straight from the plant if you have it. Mix in some

Calendula oil and Lavender essential oil or a couple of drops of Chamomile. Aloe vera is one of nature’s wonder skin miracles often used in Burns Units to help heal skin after serious burns so provides great relief to sunburn skin to cool and heal it. Calendula, Lavender and Chamomile will cool and promote skin healing and restore the moisture levels. 4. Have a refreshing shower boost – to refresh you ready for the day and give your mind a blast of positivity, add a few drops of Lemon or Lime essential oil to your shower tray, Let the steam carry the oils into the atmosphere and inhale the aromas. Both oils promote clarity, energy and a positive mindset, a great way to start your day! 5. Certain herbal oils can help to calm the mind which can then keep us cool and collected. Try wearing a dab of diluted Rose or Linden Blossom essential oils on your pulse points as a perfume. Both help promote serenity and feel good emotions, and the scent will help you if you’re feeling flustered or overwhelmed. The divine aromas will put you in the mood for a wonderful summer’s day or evening. Make a difference.

It’s not easy to figure out where you’re going. Especially when you’re a child. You can help turn a child’s life around. Become a foster carer. The Foster Care Agency (TFCA) is an independent fostering provider based in Shoreham-By-Sea. We aim to have a strong local presence and involvement in the community to support local foster families in caring for vulnerable children and young people. We need more foster households to come on board with us so that we can offer excellent matches to children and young people that need to be looked after. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of fostering households and this means that is not always possible to place children in their local communities. If you’re interested in becoming a foster carer, give our friendly team a call:

Or come along to one of our informal recruitment events. It’s a chance to chat with our brilliant foster carers and learn more about fostering. To discover upcoming events near you visit:

Hamstrings or Lower Back?

T

his month we will be looking at one of the most common sports injuries, which often get misdiagnosed. Hamstring strains happen all the time when playing sport, but often the injury is not related to a muscle strain and can in fact be linked instead to the lower back.

How do we differentiate between a hamstring strain and referred pain from the lower back? One very easy test, which can differentiate between a hamstrings strain and a lower back issue is called “Slump Test”.

In this test we can put the spinal cord and sciatic nerve on a stretch, whilst increasing the hamstrings stretch. First we can compare the feeling between the left and the right leg, by testing each leg separately. Secondly, by keeping the hamstrings on a stretch, but releasing tension in the spinal cord, a reduction in pain indicates a potential lower back or nerve issue, whereas no change in painful symptoms will indicate a hamstrings strain.

Other ways to differentiate between a potential lower back and hamstrings strain are as follows: Hamstrings Strain – – – – – –

Possible local or widespread bruising Normally local acute tenderness on palpation Pain on resisted knee bend Pain on hamstrings stretch locally Is normally very painful on exercise Ice packs usually relieve the pain during the acute early phase of a hamstrings strain

Lower Back/Sciatic Nerve – N o relief or increased pain on attempting to stretch the hamstrings, normally felt like an intense toothache sensation – More general less specific pain, often sharp or shooting like in nature – Pain when attempting to bend to put socks and shoes on – Not always painful when doing exercise – Ice packs do not usually help relieve pain and in some cases make it worse There are many other ways a Physiotherapist or healthcare professional can test for whether you are suffering with a muscle strain or a referred neural pain. If you are unsure of what is causing your pain, then you should consult a physiotherapist, so that you can have your injury correctly diagnosed and can follow an appropriate exercise recovery program. The Pros and cons of joinT finances There are benefits - and risks - for couples who decide to manage their money together. Many couples maintain independent finances, but operate one or more joint accounts to cover the household bills or for savings. But differing attitudes to spending and saving can be a source of tension. once you buy a home together, or even just open a joint account, your finances become inter-linked. You will then be ‘co-scored’ when applying for credit and a partner’s poorer credit score can impact on your own rating. if you have a shared mortgage or loan, you will also be liable for the whole debt if your partner can’t, or won’t, contribute to the repayments. Switching investments Where one partner is a basic rate taxpayer or non-taxpayer and the other pays income tax at a higher rate, it could be worth switching savings or investments to the lower earner to reduce the overall tax payable. Husbands, wives and civil

partners can normally transfer assets freely between each other without incurring tax on any gains realised by the gift. Higher earners can choose to contribute to the pension of a lower-earning spouse, with the amount of tax relief available the greater of £3,600 or their ‘relevant’ UK earnings. this could help couples make best use of both of their personal allowances for income tax in retirement. one word of warning: if an account is also in a partner’s name, they are then legally entitled to the money. trust is key. couples must be comfortable discussing their finances. If you would value an Independent Financial Advisers’ review of your Savings, Investments, Mortgage or Pensions, we can help. Our team of 8 regulated IFAs and Principal Mortgage Adviser are ready to help with all of your financial plans.

Albert Edward Longstaff

A

lbert Edward Longstaff was a professional footballer from Shoreham. In the 1910-11 season of the F.A Cup Charity Shield Match, it was Brighton and Hove Albion versus Leeds City. Brighton played in the Southern League and Leeds in the Second Division of the Football League, so Albion were very much the underdogs. Five minutes into the game, Bert Longstaff, Brighton’s rightwinger raced the ball down to the Leeds City goal line. He kicked the ball in a cross that saw Leeds keeper Harry Bromage struggle to clear it. The ball landed in the path of Brighton’s Bill ‘Bullet’ Jones who scored the first goal of the match. Forty minutes into the game Leeds City’s Billy McLeod chipped Brighton keeper Bob Whiting hitting the cross bar. Leeds’s Hugh Roberts then scored the equaliser. After the half-time interval and sixty-five minutes into the match, Bert Longstaff found the right wing had opened up for him. He crossed again to ‘Bullet’ Jones (nicknamed for his goalscoring headers) and Harry Bromage’s fingers couldn’t stop the ball. The score was now 2-1 to Brighton. Bert’s third dash on the right wing through the Leeds defence ended with a cross that put the ball onto the head of Jimmy Smith to seal Brighton’s 3-1 win. The match was considered Bert’s best, adding to his already impressive football record. Albert Edward Longstaff was born in 1885 in Shoreham-bySea. His father John was originally from Durham and worked as an agricultural engineer. Bert had three brothers and two sisters, and the family lived at Queens Place. The next-door neighbour was Shoreham FC’s manager Oswald Ball, who was also a teacher at Ham Road junior school where Albert attended. The Longstaff family moved to Victoria Road and the Longstaff brothers went to York Place Intermediate School, Brighton that at that time charged a fee of 9d a week per pupil. Bert Longstaff’s career began at Shoreham Excelsior Football club, from which he moved on to Shoreham FC in 1902, at the age of 17. After several cup winning seasons there Bert turned down signing with Tottenham Hotspur because his mother wanted him to stay at home. In 1906 he instead signed for Brighton and Hove Albion and made his debut against Crystal Palace on the 7Th of November. In the 1909-1910 season, Brighton and Hove Albion won the Southern League, with Bert scoring the winning goal to beat Swindon 3-1. The club also won the Southern Charity Cup and the F.A Charity Shield. The winners of the Football League and Southern League always played the shield match. It was

estimated that a crowd of 13,000 people attended Chelsea’s ground of Stamford Bridge to watch the match between Aston Villa and Brighton. Seventy-two minutes into the game, Bert crossed the ball to Bill Hastings who flicked it to Charlie Webb. Webb then went through two defenders to score the winning goal. On the 16th of October 1912, Bert’s younger brother Harvey made his debut as a centre forward for the Albion against Luton Town. Harvey unfortunately then missed the entire 1913-1814 season due to ‘painter’s colic’. He was transferred to Southend United in July 1914. Surviving the First World War, Harvey ran a tobacconists shop in Lewes Road, Brighton. After the war, Bert returned to Brighton and Hove Albion, but was by now an old man by football standards, being in his thirties. The 1921-22 season was to be his last with the club and it was a club first as they were now in the Football League’s Third Division South. In all, Albert Longstaff made 443 appearances and scored 86 goals, which was a club record in its day. In 1924, he secured Football Association permission to rejoin Shoreham FC. At 39 years old in 1925, he played in the Sussex Senior Cup Final when Southwick beat Shoreham 2-1. Bert retired from football and having trained to be a tinsmith in the army, he had a partnership in a motor-engineering business in Gloucester Road, Brighton until 1933. The Paine-Manwaring Company based at Worthing then employed him as an engineer. A national household name and role model, Albert Longstaff’s image appeared on team postcards, cigarette cards and portrait photographs. His football skills were also widely reported in the newspapers of the day. He resided at Freshfield Road, Brighton and lived to the age of 84.

Ready, Set… BREATHE!

H

ello runners!! In this article, Alex Marek, osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre and subthree marathon runner, explains how developing good postural habits and simply learning how to breathe well could help keep those running injuries at bay.

What do we mean by “good posture”?

Research has shown that muscles groups can be separated into two main types: 1) Tonic – muscles that have a tendency to tighten and shorten (eg hamstrings, biceps) 2) P hasic – work in opposition to the tonic muscles and are susceptible to weakness and/or becoming underactive (eg quadriceps, triceps) A good way to understand how these muscles work together is to think of them as “pulley systems” on a sailing boat. In order to keep the boat balanced, upright and moving forwards the correct tensions must be applied to the sails. If incorrect tensions occur, i.e. if a muscle group is doing too much or not enough work, this could lead to musculoskeletal imbalance, joint instability and therefore a greater risk of injury.

The dysfunctional “pulley system” and the diaphragm

A lot of runners, and people in general, are stuck in what can often be described as an “extended posture” where the lower

ribs are in a raised position (chest out) whilst the lower back shows an increased curve (lumbar lordosis) in the lower back (bottom out). This extended posture can impair the correct functioning of the diaphragm, a large umbrella type structure formed of muscle tissue that performs an essential function in respiration. As the diaphragm contracts, it tightens and lowers, so that the lungs can expand fully, to allow optimum intake of air/ oxygen. On relaxing, the diaphragm loosens and returns to its dome position, so that the lungs can expel as much air and carbon dioxide as possible. If the diaphragm is not functioning efficiently, your central nervous system – recognising that your body needs to take in air (i.e. breathe) – will recruit help from other muscle groups, including the muscles that are connected to your upper rib cage to help with the breathing process, and even your hip flexors and lower back muscles. These muscles will perform an excess amount of work, potentially resulting in a cascade of postural related pain, and less efficient running… Thus a vicious cycle is set up, poor posture, inefficient diaphragm function and breathing – dysfunctional muscle pulley system and poor posture – inefficient breathing. And of course, if our breathing is not efficient, we cannot intake enough oxygen to power the muscles that we need to run. In addition, the diaphragm actually forms part of the “core” muscles supporting the lower back and pelvis. It is intimately related to the function of the deep abdominal muscles, pelvic floor and thoracolumbarfascia that support the spine, so it is essential to make sure it functions well.

The diaphragmatic breathing technique – finding balance

What is the first step to a stronger and healthier posture? First things first – take the stress away from your central nervous system. Start by finding a relaxed environment, focus on your positive thoughts and quieten down the stressful ones. Lie on your back, feet flat and legs bent. Place your hands on your abdomen and make sure your lower back is relaxed, with the pelvis in a neutral position (not tilted forwards or backwards, so there is just a small gap between your lower back and the floor). Your shoulders should be relaxed, not rolling forwards or hunched up to your ears, shoulderblades touching the floor, open across your chest). Begin with slow deep inhalations through the nose, and feel your hands rise as the abdomen naturally pushes out, as the diaphragm contracts. Then exhale through your mouth. Start with twice per day, breathing inwards for 5 seconds and out for 5 seconds and build up to 10. Put some puff in your sails and start the journey towards better posture and a healthier environment for your mind and musculoskeletal system to flourish. For alignment and postural advice as well as help with relaxation and breathing techniques, feel free to contact our team of osteopaths, hypnotherapist and massage therapists at SOC. It’s My Life: Living Wills & Health & Welfare Powers of Attorney By Joseph Lambert

I

n Private Client – that is to say, the area of law that deals with Wills, Powers of Attorney, Probate, etc – we are concerned with protecting you and ensuring your wishes are carried out. Often this means what you wish to happen after you die, but this can also mean what you want to happen should you still be alive but unable to make decisions about yourself. If you were to become incapable of independent living, would you want to go into a care home or stay in your own house? Do you want to be kept alive as long as possible or would you prefer to go when you enter a persistent vegetative state? These are serious questions we hope to never have to answer, but if you wait too long then it may be strangers in social services or the medical profession who make these decisions rather than you or those who love you.

Living Wills – You can decide some things yourself

in advance, by making what is called a ‘Living Will’ or an ‘Advance Decision’, which are different terms for the same thing. Specifically, these are used to refuse consent to medical treatment. Commonly, these are made when you have a diagnosis of a terminal, degenerative condition and want to stipulate that there are specific treatments you do not want, even if they would keep you alive longer. Alternatively, if you do not want specific treatments because of medical or ethical reasons, they can be included in an Advance Decision. While they are powerful legal documents, there are several weaknesses in Advance Decisions. The two main ones are: They have to be specific.

General statements about not wanting life-sustaining treatment are less likely to be enforced. This is why they are more often made by people already diagnosed and aware of the potential treatments for their specific condition. They only cover medical treatment. You cannot make Advance Decisions about care or welfare – including where or how you would want to live, what you want to eat and so on.

Health and Welfare Powers of Attorney – Since

2007 you have been able to create two types of Lasting Power of Attorney: Property & Finance, and Health & Welfare. It is this second one – the Health & Welfare Power of Attorney – that is relevant to us today. With this Power of Attorney, you choose one or more people who you trust absolutely, to make decisions for you if you lose the capacity to make those decisions yourself. These can be as serious as decisions about life-sustaining medical treatment, but unlike Advance Decisions can also include decisions about welfare – such as where or whether to move to a care home. It can also cover more mundane decisions, such as day-to-day medical treatment, diet, who visits you and so on. If there is someone, or a couple of people, who you truly trust – Health & Welfare Powers of Attorney are a perfect mix of being flexible enough to accommodate many situations and powerful enough to make the decisions you want made. Remember that ‘next of kin’ means nothing in law – in order to ensure that it is those you love and trust who make decisions for you, you need to have a Lasting Power of Attorney put in place while you still have capacity. If you are interested in a Health & Welfare Power of Attorney or an Advanced Decision, or if you have any questions, contact Joseph Lambert or any of the Private Client team at QualitySolicitors Howlett Clarke will be happy to help.
