Chichester Cathedral Friends A Treat for All Lovers of Books and History
Y
ou may think that a history book sale is a very narrow base for a successful sale, but Chichester Cathedral Friends and West Sussex Archives Society have a different view and are co-hosting a second-hand History Book Sale in The Vicars’ Hall, Chichester, on 12th and 13th October, 2018 to which you are warmly invited. Entrance is free, and half of the proceeds will go towards projects within the Cathedral that are supported by the Friends. “History Books” encompass a wide range of categories from Local History, Biographies, Architecture and Military to Railways, Historical Surveys, Family History and Churches, and we plan to have a wide selection of second-hand books on sale for the two days. Some books will be specialist collectables whilst others will be of a more general nature and on sale at a very attractive price. So, if you have a love of books and especially history books, do come along and browse among the many bargains that will be on offer. Also, if you have any suitable books that you would be happy to donate, we would be delighted to include them in the Sale. These can be taken to the Cathedral Friends’ Office on Tuesday or Fridays between 10.00 am and 1.00 pm. If you ask at the Royal Chantry, next to Cloisters Café, the receptionist will provide directions to the Friends’ Office. We can also collect within the Chichester area: please call Iain Jessup on 07973 768917 to arrange a convenient time. During the two-day Book Sale Cloisters Café will provide refreshments and light lunches, enabling you to browse for as long as you wish. Chichester Cathedral Friends is a registered charity. Membership costs £15 per year and £25 for a couple. For more information visit: www.chichestercathedral.org.uk/friends or email friends@ chichestercathedral.org.uk.

Champion House, Southwick Buckingham Arms, Shoreham If you have lived in Shoreham and Southwick for some time, then you will know that one of the highlights of the year is the annual Donkey Derby and Classic Vehicle Rally. Back in the day this was The Adur Vintage Transport Rally and although the number of vehicles had declined there are more than ever coming this year, including 20-30 Morris Minors. The Lions started planning this year’s event back in November and lots of the old favourites will be there including: Funfair, beer tent, classic cars, donkey rides, donkey races, tote, stalls, tea tent, cakes, static engines, children’s rides, freestyle karate, Shoreham Allstars, Sussex Tornados, Sompting Village Morris, splat the rat, hook a duck, and facepainting. Unfortunately, the birds of prey are unable to attend this year but it is highly likely that there may be an attraction that
replaces the feathers with scales and squawks with slithers! Watch this space! In order for this event to run smoothly many pairs of hands are needed on the day for a variety of tasks. These range from putting up the fencing for the donkey races to making cups of tea and everything in-between. The Lions are a friendly lot and would welcome any offers of help so don’t be shy and get in touch if you could help during the day. Another fundraising event coming up next month is the car boot sale at Adur Recreation Ground on 19 May. You can support this event by just going along to buy or sell or, if you fancy being more hands-on, you could offer to marshall the event alongside the Lions and the Scouts who are sharing this event. To contact the Lions you can ring 0845 8337356. Further information is available online – log onto the website www.adureastlions.org.uk, or visit the Facebook page www.facebook.com/adureastlionsclub.

Charlie Green and the Knights of the Round Table
L
ocal author Martyn Blunden’s third historical fantasy novel, Charlie Green and the Knights of the Round Table, starts off with the hopeful rescue of Oliver Bramley who had had to be left behind in 1862 in Charlie Green and the Underground Railroad. Charlie and his fellow adventurers had previous had to return to the present after Oliver fell sick after seeking out the heroine Harriet Tubman during the American Civil War. Harriet’s life is not so well known in the UK but a museum dedicated to her memory was opened in 2017 in her home state of Maryland, USA. Charlie’s mission had been to help her find and release her sister from slavery, but Charlie’s innocent friendliness put the whole expedition in jeopardy. Charlie Green is the epitome of kindness, bold, goodnatured and always seeks to find truth and put right wrongs with a cheeky grin. But Charlie is no ordinary boy, he has a secret: a magical aeroplane that can take him anywhere including back in time! In Martyn’s latest adventure, Charlie must travel back to the sixth century to save Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table from self-destruction. When an old man in a museum reveals some long lost parchments which contain a confession by Merlin, the great wizard and advisor to King Arthur, and revelation of treachery within Camelot, Charlie knows that history will have to be rewritten. He must travel back in time to warn King Arthur and stop the millennia old lies that Sir Lancelot betrayed his beloved King. Charlie knows little about the century he is visiting and upon arrival finds difficulty in persuading its inhabitants to listen to him. The answer to his problems is locked away on the magical island of Avalon and is guarded by many, entrusted with total protection of its secrets. Inspiration for the one of the elements in the story came from a book on Sussex Folklore, Sussex Folk Tales by Michael O’Leary which he picked up at Singleton Open Air Museum. Mystical creatures called Phariees conceal themselves in woodland and these have made their way into Hogsbottom Wood in Martyn’s story. Originally from Steyning himself, current residents would recognise some of the town appearing in the descriptions of Charlie’s local town of Cheshampton! Also from Martyn’s childhood, an eccentric character that dressed immaculately and wore a monocle, rode around on a bicycle in the Worthing and Shoreham areas stopping at road junctions to wave and smile at passers-by, makes an appearance in Charlie Green and the Knights of the Round Table. Currently Martyn lives on Shoreham Beach and is a lecturer at Shoreham Airport. He’s available for school visits and recently spoke to over 500 children at Maidenbower Junior School, Crawley on World Book Day, where he illustrated his talk with his collection of artefacts. The book will be published on May 28th, priced £8.99 and launched locally at Shoreham Airport Humming Bird Restaurant on May 26th between 12.00 and 14.00.

Fingers Crossed for Better Weather
T
he beginning of this year has to date been, well pretty dire. We have had a lot of rainfall on top of below average temperatures, which obviously has an effect on things in the garden. Let’s hope that as we move into the warmer summer months, they are both warmer and summery!
There is no doubt we have had a lot of rain and it can have a dramatic effect on how the plants perform but also on the condition of the ground they are in. Continual rainfall can very quickly wash through nutrients in the soil, especially in containers, so once we get into drier weather, give them all a boost, with a liquid feed. It will certainly help to get them going In areas that have become very wet or boggy, especially on lawns, don’t get in a panic or be in a rush to sort things out. We have had numerous phone calls from people saying they have bad drainage in their garden and it needs sorting, when in fact the high amounts of rain just bring the water levels up and they don’t get a chance to drain away. At any other time, there has never been a problem. Be patient and leave bad areas until the things start to dry up. See how it is then and if necessary you can take some simple action, like aerating the ground with a fork and brushing in some grit to help improve drainage. One of the best things you can do in a boggy area is stay off it, as walking over it will just make matters worse as you compact the ground There are however some advantages to this weather. It’s a good time to get water butts filled up (not that it will take long!) and maybe add another ready for the drier months ahead, as they can be emptied very quickly. Also ensure your water butt is in a good location. They fill quickly and simply overflow so make sure they aren’t in a very wet area and that you’re not adding to the problem. Also, a water butt shouldn’t be at the end of a down pipe draining from a roof. The pipe needs to go somewhere to drain properly, once its passed the water butt diverter. We do often see a pipe coming from a roof and finishing in a water butt! Well fingers crossed for better weather. I am however sitting here with wrinkled fingers having been in the garden all day in the rain. Not the most pleasant of days, but it shows that rain doesn’t have to completely stop things in the garden. I’m off to dry out now! Mark Oakley Any Garden Limited

It’s not easy to figure out where you’re going. Especially when you’re a child. You can help turn a child’s life around. Become a foster carer. The Foster Care Agency (TFCA) is an independent fostering provider based in Shoreham-By-Sea. We aim to have a strong local presence and involvement in the community to support local foster families in caring for vulnerable children and young people. We need more foster households to come on board with us so that we can offer excellent matches to children and young people that need to be looked after. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of fostering households and this means that is not always possible to place children in their local communities. If you’re interested in becoming a foster carer, give our friendly team a call:

Mitch Benn – I’m Still Here
Shoreham Ropetackle 11th May www.ropetacklecentre.co.uk
“Song after song of exquisitely crafted satire.” The Scotsman Congratulations! It’s 2018 and you’re still here! So is Mitch, (“the country’s leading musical satirist” Times) looking backwards, forwards and sideways trying to make the world a better place, one silly song at a time. Join him as he looks back over what for the lack of a better word he still refers to as his “career” and ponders where he – and indeed all of us – might be going next.
“A seriously talented laugh-maker, musician and satirist. Mitch Benn should be more widely known and appreciated. He’s Britain’s answer to Tom Lehrer.” The Swindonian A stalward of BBC Radio 4’s ‘Now Show’ for more than a decade, Mitch has also presented many radio specials. Following on from the success of ‘Mitch Benn Is The 37th Beatle’, a further three specials on music icons Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Elvis have been broadcast – ‘The Freewheelin’ Mitch Benn’, ‘Mitch Benn Is The Fat Pink Duke’ and ‘Mitch Benn Has Left The Building’. He also co-presented with Harry Shearer BBC Radio 2’s ‘Anatomy Of A Guitar’ and presented ‘Spank The Plank’ for BBC Radio 4. Most recently, in December 2016, he appeared on (and won) BBC1 television’s ‘Celebrity Mastermind’.
“Well crafted, well sung, his songs are just plain funny” The Guardian Mitch is the author of two novels, ‘Terra’ and ‘Terra’s World’ both published by Gollancz and co-author with Jon Holmes of ‘The Twitter History Of The World’ the paperback edition of which was published by Prion Books.

Make the Most of your Isas by InvestIng early. Don’t wait for the enD of tax year reminDers!
there are advantages to planning your isa (individual savings accounts) investments around the beginning of the new tax year. With iSas all the taxation benefits occur after investment is made and yet the focus is often on tax year-end contributions. countless articles on iSas filled the weekend press in March and they are set to re-emerge - just like a financial sign of spring - in 12 months’ time. For other investments, such as venture capital trusts and pensions, there is logic in waiting until the end of the tax year – when you have a better idea of your income for the year… and hence your tax position. the same is not necessarily true of iSas. indeed, it is sensible to contribute to iSas as early in the tax year as possible, to get the tax benefits for as long a period as possible. as a reminder these benefits are: • No UK tax on dividends, an important factor as the dividend allowance has been cut from £5,000 to £2,000 for 2018/19.
• Nothing to report to HMRC on your tax return. • Allowing a surviving spouse or civil partner to inherit your iSa benefits - effectively treating your iSas as joint investments. Making an iSa contribution does not necessarily mean paying in cash. it can include selling an existing investment you hold personally and repurchasing it within an iSa. You may crystallise some capital gains in the process, but at the start of the tax year you almost certainly still have your full £11,700 annual exemption available. You can save up to a maximum of £20,000 in 2018/19, and this can be in a cash iSa, a stocks & shares ISA, an innovative finance ISA, a Help to Buy iSa, a Lifetime iSa or a mixture of all of them (with a little negotiation). it’s a simple and tax-efficient way to grow your wealth over time.
• No UK tax on interest earned. if you would like some advice on the best • No UK capital gains tax on any profits realised. options for you, please call us – we can help. the value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. investing in shares should be regarded as a long-term investment and should fit in with your overall attitude to risk and financial circumstances. the value of tax reliefs depends on your individual circumstances. tax laws can change. the Financial conduct authority does not regulate tax advice.

Blooming Beautiful
N
ow spring is in the air and the flowers are starting to bloom we will be enjoying the scent of spring blossoms wafting through the air. Many of nature’s blooms provide us with an array of medicinal, beauty enhancing and well-being benefits. Many of these are accessible to use in our day to day life having been incorporated in both modern and ancient beauty remedies, in celebrations and in ritual through the ages. There is so much more than just a pretty flower. Hundreds of medicinal flowers exist and here are a few of Mother Nature’s gifts from beautiful blossoms and their amazing healing properties!
Chamomile A gentle soothing herb, there are two types of Chamomile that are often use in herbal medicine and beauty products, German Chamomile which produces a blue coloured essential oil and Roman Chamomile that has a sweeter more fruity scent. Both varieties possess antiinflammatory and antiseptic properties that are good for any irritation of the skin, be it a rash, spots, insect bites or swollen arthritic joints and injuries. Chamomile can have a helpful effect on the digestive system, easing indigestion, nausea and Irritable bowel symptoms. Perhaps the most powerful effect of Chamomile is its ability to relax and calm the nervous system. Wonderful to ease tension and worries, encouraging sleep where there is insomnia. Its gentle nature helps to ease feelings or irritability and frustration helping us to let go of stress and find a childlike peace.
Orange blossom Neroli oil is extracted from the small white blossoms of the orange tree. Named after the Italian princess Neroli who used the oil to scent her gloves, scarves and stationery. Light, sweet, citrus and heavenly are words used to describe it’s scent. It provides an instant lift to the mood, smelling both soothing and euphoric, it can lift a heavy heart, ease anxiety and is often used as a treatment for shock or trauma. One of the more expensive floral extracts, its use in cosmetics is prized due to it’s anti-aging, skin rejuvenating properties that can be helpful for delicate and sensitive complexions.
Marigold This cheerful orange coloured flower has a great capacity for healing the skin, otherwise known as calendula and sharing the same anti-inflammatory and soothing properties of Chamomile you can find marigold being used in many skincare products to nourish dry skin, reduce redness and even heal problematic skin such as eczema and psoriasis plus it is a very effective wound healer helping to speed up the skins healing process.
Linden Blossom If you’ve ever walked past a Lime/Linden tree in full bloom during the height of summer there is no denying its mood elevating effect. Much has been written about this tree, linked to magical properties, fairytales, ritual and celebrations all references point to its medicinal properties and it’s ability to encourage relaxation to soothe the nerves and reassure when life feels tough. Favoured in perfumery for its light refreshing quality it can also be used to calm the mucous membranes for any respiratory problems, clearing catarrh and cooling a fever and headache. There are so many floral plants with amazing properties yet these are just a few, that can be utilised in the form of an essential oil (a concentrated essence of the plant), taken as a herbal tea, used in massage as a herbal infusion or you can very often find these as ingredients in natural skincare products that helps to harness their beautifying effects. RACE FOR LIFE HIKE EVENT RETURNS TO SOUTH DOWNS WAY Race for Life Hike will take place at the following locations: • • • • • • • •

Lake District – 19th May Hadrian’s Wall – 9th June Jurassic Coast – 23rd June Brecon Beacons – 30th June The Ridgeway – 7th July South Downs Way – 1st Sept North Norfolk Coast – 8th Sept Peak District – 8th Sept
OMEN in the South are being urged to lace up their hiking boots and join the fight against cancer as Cancer Research UK launches an exciting event in the South-East. The Race for Life Hike at South Downs Way will take place on Saturday 1 September. Race for Life Hike is returning to South Downs Way, following an enthusiastic response to the inaugural event last year. South Downs Way is one of just eight iconic locations in the UK which have been specially selected to hold Race for Life Hike events, which take place between May and September. Race for Life Hike is a series of one-day, long-distance walking events open to women of all ages and abilities. Hike along the beautiful, unspoilt Sussex coastline, taking in a stunning section of the South Downs Way as you walk from Brighton to Eastbourne, Helen Gardens. Enjoy incredible views over the white cliffs of Seven Sisters Country Park, and from the iconic Beachy Head. Each Hike route is between 20 and 26 miles, involving a mix of challenging terrains, with an expected walking time of 8 to 12 hours. The routes are fully planned with maps provided at registration. Participants will also be treated to a hot meal, glass of bubbly and a medal at the finish line. With each route offering striking scenery and beautiful views – from the UNESCO World Heritage coastline to the famous Brecon Beacons – it offers participants the chance to explore the great outdoors whilst raising money for a worthwhile cause. Cancer Research UK is calling on women in the South-East to sign up right now at www.raceforlife.org. Money raised will help Cancer Research UK scientists and doctors find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease, helping save more lives. Helen Curtis, Cancer Research UK’s South Downs Way Hike Event Manager, said: “We’re so excited to be able to return to South Downs Way for the second time. It’s the perfect opportunity for local women to make the most of the stunning scenery right on their doorstep, and help raise money for vital cancer research at the same time. “Participants will have access to training guidance and fundraising advice before the event, and there’ll be plenty of
support points along the route offering drinks, snacks and lunch to help keep them going. The atmosphere on the day promises to be really special as women unite to in the fight against the disease.” Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy, Half Marathon and Hiking events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner by funding crucial research. One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work relies on the public’s support. Thanks to the generosity of its supporters, the charity was able to spend over £35 million last year in the South-East on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research helping more men, women and children survive the disease. Helen continued: “Race for Life Hike has all the fun and camaraderie of our much loved 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy events. Whether they’re an experienced hiker or a novice rambler, by joining like-minded ladies committed to the cause, local women can unite against a disease that affects us all in some way. “Every day, around 130 people are diagnosed with cancer in the South East*. That’s why we’re calling on women to sign up right now. Every step, every person and every penny raised makes a real difference in the fight against the disease.” The entry fee for Race for Life Hike is £30. Women who sign up will be given a Race for Life Season Pass, offering free entry into unlimited 5k and 10k events to support their training. To enter Race for Life Hike today go to raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770. *All cancers (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) annual average 2012-2014 in the South East Region.

Dinkie Flowers
D
inkie Flowers, owner of the Dinkie Flowers Stage School, based at the Shoreham Centre, will reach her 97th birthday on May 7th of this year. As well as being a talented dance teacher who has taught generations of children locally, for over 50 years, Dinkie had a highly successful career as an international ice skater, appearing in front of thousands in ice spectaculars worldwide. Born in Brighton, Dinkie Stapleton, to use her stage name, began dancing as a young child. Dame Vera Garbutt, who taught her, was herself also an early starter; having established the Vera Garbutt School of Dancing aged only 16. Dinkie also studied at the famous Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London as well as the Doris Issacs School of Dance. From the age of 11 until she was 13, Dinkie entertained the troops as part of the ‘Mobile Entertainment Southern Area’. She appeared at Brighton’s Theatre Royal as well as the Ralli Hall in Denmark Villas, Hove, in Gilbert and Sullivan productions: ‘The Mikado’, ‘HMS Pinafore’ and ‘The Pirates of Penzance. Directing all three shows was the famous musical star of stage and screen Gracie Fields. After the final performance of one of the shows, Dinkie was selected to present Miss Fields with a bouquet, and when the singer thanked her for the ‘Daisies’ she corrected her politely that the blooms were carnations. Aged 14, without telling her family, Dinkie went to London to audition for a show she’d seen advertised in ‘The Stage’ newspaper and was offered the part. Her father was not best pleased when he found out. Dinkie was now attending Brighton’s ice rink and teaching herself to skate in a pair of hired boots. It was there she was spotted by a scout for the Brighton-based impresario Tom Arnold (1897-1969). Arnold produced some of the largest and most impressive ice shows ever staged. She was asked to attend an audition for his company at Hove Cricket Ground, where she impressed his colleague Gerald Palmer, who produced many of his shows for stage and TV. He arranged for Dinkie to have skating lessons at Brighton Ice Rink and hired her for the Tom Arnold show ‘Hello, Ice’. Now she could buy her own professional skater’s boots. After her success in this show, Dinkie received a year’s contract to appear in “Stars on Ice” at the Stoll Theatre in London. After working in ice shows in Spain, Dinkie returned to England once more, appearing in ‘Puss In Boots on Ice’ in 1952, again for the Tom Arnold Company, but this time at the Empress Hall in Earl’s Court. Here her agility and acrobatic skills really came into their own as she took on the starring role of the cat. The now demolished Empress Hall was at that time an impressive 7000-seater ice rink that became the home of London’s Ice Spectaculars. On matinee days, Dinkie had to dance on ice for 9 hours, while dressed in a heavy fur cat costume. This production, like a number of ice shows in the 1950s, was televised. Her TV appearance led to Dinkie being asked to attend the British Trade Fair in Iraq and while in that country she also taught the Iraqi Royal Family to skate. She later toured Ireland and South Africa with the ice shows. Dinky went on to play roles in the Tom Arnold Company’s ‘Ice Revue’ in 1954 and ‘Dick Whittington’ and ‘Babes In The
22
Wood’ (1956). On May 19th, 1954, she starred in the final programme in the BBC series ‘Icetime: The Daphne Walker Show’ broadcast from the Queen’s Ice Rink in London. When the Tom Arnold ice shows were eventually taken over by the company Holiday On Ice, Dinkie continued to appear and tour with them for eight years. This famous touring ice show originated in the US in 1943 and still tours to Brighton annually today. Dinkie Flowers married her husband George, a stage director who she went on to work with on the show ‘Ice Carnival’. Their daughter Sarah attended ballet school and also found success as a professional dancer. Dinkie herself then took on another stage role, this time treading the boards, in an ice-free pantomime of Puss-In-Boots, in Norwich, alongside Bernard Bresslaw and Kenneth Connor. Dinkie turned choreographer in 1974, when she worked on the world premiere of an opera by the astronomer Sir Patrick Moore. Entitled ‘Perseus and Andromeda’ it was produced to acclaim at Shoreham Community Centre. She went on to choreograph numerous shows for Shoreham Light Opera Company and appeared at the Barn Theatre, Southwick in the musical ‘The Boy Friend’ with the Wick Theatre Company in 1973. Dinkie Flowers will be celebrated at a special birthday event at the Shoreham Centre, Pond Road on May 12th from 1pm to 5pm. Judy Upton To advertise call: 01273 452065 • www.insideshoreham.com

Dalai Lama India Trek blog: A Personal Challenge for a Worthy Cause
F
rom 18-28 October 2018, I will be joining a team of around 50 trekkers for the challenge of a lifetime as we journey to the Tibetan region of Northern India to embark on a 67km trek through the Himalayas. Everyone taking part in the trek will be fundraising for St Barnabas House, the local hospice for the Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield areas. I thought I would kick-off my Dalai Lama India Trek blog by giving a bit of background about who I am and why I decided to take part. I’ve worked for St Barnabas House for over two years now, and during that time I’ve witnessed the vital care and support the hospice provides first-hand. Hospices are truly special places and provide incredible support for people at a time of great need, when they are approaching the end of their lives. One thing has been very noticeable during my time working for St Barnabas House, and that’s just how many local people know of somebody who has been cared for by the hospice at some point. More often than not, when I tell someone I work at St Barnabas, they will have had a relative, friend, colleague, or know of somebody who has been on the receiving end of the care the organisation provides. We are very fortunate to be so well supported by the people in our local community, the generosity of whom never ceases to amaze me. My fellow trekkers and I will be asking our own friends, family and colleagues to show that incredible generosity in support of our fundraising over the next few months When I was asked whether I would consider taking one of the three staff places on the Dalai Lama India Trek it didn’t take me long to make up my mind. The trek will be an extraordinary experience; an opportunity to visit and learn about a new country while challenging myself in a way I never have before. I work within the Marketing Team at St Barnabas House, and
my role on the trek will be to share the experience with everyone back at home, hopefully inspiring some of you to take on one of our future overseas treks! Leading up to the trek I will be sharing the stories of some of my fellow trekkers, and helping to promote their upcoming fundraising activities. While we’re all out in India I’ll be writing a daily blog, taking lots of photos and videos, and interviewing my fellow trekkers to find out why they are taking part. In February we had our first social meeting with our fellow trekkers, and it was great to hear about how they are all getting on with their fundraising. Some of them are doing some exciting and unusual fundraising activities, including yoga days, quiz nights, wine tasting and curry nights to name just a few. Our excellent Fundraising Team are always there to support their fundraising. They can be contacted on 01903 254777 or fundraising@stbh.org.uk. Personally, I will be taking on a series of challenges throughout 2018, including the Nuts Challenge, a firewalk and the BM10k. My place on the trip is a working place, supporting participants and documenting the trip, donated by Global Adventure Challenges. I’ll still be doing some fundraising though, and if you’d like to sponsor me you can do so by visiting my JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/sam-skilton-india-trek Thank you for reading and for your support! Trust Chairman Announces Retirement
M
ike Viggers has today announced that he will retire as Chairman of the Board of Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and its Council of Governors at the end of May. He is also retiring from the same position at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH), which he has held since April 2017 as part of WSHFT’s leadership support for its neighbour organ Mike has been chairman of Western Sussex since 2011, a period in which the trust became only the third in England to be named as ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission and has been rated by its staff as one of the best NHS organisations in the country at which to work or be treated. Mike said: “The decision to retire has been the most difficult of my working life. I have spent seven wonderful years with such outstanding people at both Western Sussex and BSUH. Witnessing the dedication staff in our hospitals show to their patients day in and day out has been a truly humbling experience and I thank them all for that incredible commitment.
24
“However, at the age of 65, I feel the time is right to spend more time with my family and grandchildren, and allow another the privilege of chairing these two great organisations and helping them continue improving care for patients.” Trust chief executive Marianne Griffiths paid tribute to Mike and his own contribution to the two organisations, saying: “We often talk about our staff going the extra mile for patients, but that absolutely applies to Mike’s own commitment to them too. “We couldn’t have wished for a better and more dedicated chairman than Mike, and we will all miss him as a colleague, a supporter and a friend. He will be a hard act to follow. We managed to persuade him to stay on beyond his original term once and I’m only sorry that we haven’t been able to do so again!” And she added: “We all wish Mike a very happy retirement and thank him again for his service to our hospitals, patients and community. We hope to appoint his successor very soon.” To advertise call: 01273 452065 • www.insideshoreham.com

t Barnabas House, invites you to participate in its Sunflower Memories Appeal. The appeal enables supporters and friends of St Barnabas House to make a donation in memory of a loved one. In return for a donation, we have a lovely sunflower marker onto which the name of your loved one can be written. Each sunflower will be planted in the hospice grounds for the month of June 2018. On Friday 8 June at 6pm and Saturday 9 June at 10.30am, our Chaplain, Stephen Gurr, will conduct a blessing in memory of all those for whom a sunflower has been dedicated. Andrew’s wife, Tina was diagnosed with inoperable small bowel cancer in September 2014. Soon after she began having chemotherapy. Andrew said: “Tina started attending the Day Hospice at St Barnabas in February 2015. She wasn’t that keen at first, but after a couple of weeks everything seemed to revolve around her Thursdays at St B – she couldn’t miss it. I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff and volunteers. She really enjoyed it, doing craft and the days out. What I didn’t know was that she was sorting out photos for her memory book, which was a lovely surprise for us all. “In June 2016, Tina was admitted to the In-patient Unit at St Barnabas. She was there for five weeks. Tina was a fighter, she didn’t want to give in. They did a marvellous job of looking after her and making her final days as comfortable as possible. She passed away on the 26 July 2016.”

GIVE THAT PAIN THE ELBOW!
T
his month I will be talking about Tennis Elbow, a very common injury that affects not only the tennis player but also manual workers and desk based people who type.
What is Tennis Elbow?
Tennis elbow or its anatomical name, “lateral epicondylitis”, is a painful condition felt in the outside of the elbow and forearm, which is worse when gripping, such as when playing racquet sports, mountain biking, or on activities where you extend your fingers and wrists such as typing, or playing piano.
Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG
28
How does it occur?
The extensor muscles in the forearm that extend your wrist and fingers attach into a single point on the outside of the elbow, so when the muscles contract or tense they pull at the elbow, causing repetitive strain, trauma and inflammation, which in turn causes pain and possibly swelling.
How can you treat it?
If you are unfortunate enough to develop tennis elbow, there are certain things you can do to help the condition or alleviate the pain. 1. U se a tennis elbow strap or sports tape to compress the point of tenderness, which helps stop the muscles that pull on the elbow. 2. U se ice packs to help reduce swelling and inflammation. 3. M assage the elbow and muscles of the forearm to help reduce tension and strain on the elbow. 4. S tretch the muscles of the forearm by keeping the elbow straight, with your palm facing down and flex your wrist towards the floor. 5. U se anti-inflammatory gels to massage into the elbow. 6. I f you play racquet sports, try changing the grip on your racquet to a slightly wider grip, as having a narrow grip encourages you to grip tighter. This is very common in tennis players who change racquets, to a new one where the grip is narrower. 7. C hanging your posture at your desk can have a positive effect on reducing tennis elbow. 8. I f you have tried these steps above and you are still experiencing pain, then you should consult a physiotherapist, who can treat the painful condition. If you manage this condition early enough then the recovery time is much shorter and the overall outcome is very successful. It is always advisable to prevent a problem from getting worse than to try treating it once the painful symptoms are more chronic and persistent.
