‘People’s Tribute’ to Shoreham’s Heritage Unveiled
A
‘people’s tribute’ to three individuals who have made a major contribution to Shoreham is the centrepiece of a newly-revamped gateway to the beach. Those crossing the Adur Ferry Bridge from the town centre will now be greeted with a bright new welcome as a long-awaited regeneration project for the Riverside car park is complete. As well as a new cycle path and flower beds, contractors working for Adur District Council have also installed an eye-catching portrait bench. This focal point, which has been funded by national sustainable transport charity Sustrans, includes three distinctive, life-size local figures cut from sheet steel and installed alongside a simple bench. Those who feature – King Charles II, RNLI volunteer Peter Huxtable and silent movie actress Joan Morgan – were chosen by the public as the personification of the things that are important to the community. Councillor Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: “Shoreham has a fascinating past but also an incredibly bright future, so what better way to combine the two than with this fantastic quirky landmark which celebrates those who have helped put the town on the map. It’s fantastic to see this ‘people’s tribute’ already in place and attracting lots of interest as the focal point of the wider Riverside regeneration. I want to thank Sustrans for their involvement and invite as many people as possible to cross over to the beach and see it for themselves.”
Whilst the Adur Ferry Bridge was completed in 2013, the work to transform the southern side of the bridge has been delayed due to access issues as a result of the Environmental Agency’s work on the Adur Tidal Walls scheme. Work on the finishing touches started in September and the five-week project has seen the creation of a new turning area, planting areas and recreational space. It has also involved the installation of the portrait bench, which invites the public to sit or step up into the space and become a part of the portrait group.
The Portraits
Joan Morgan was the last star of British silent cinema, working for the famous ‘Glasshouse’ Studio on Shoreham Beach in the early days of moving pictures. She became the leading actress, being described as “a beautiful British star”. After the final defeat of the Royalist army at the Battle of Worcester in 1651 King Charles II travelled 610 miles for six weeks, hotly pursued by the Parliamentarians. He travelled along the South Downs down to Shoreham Harbour where he escaped to France. He did not return to Britain until 1660 when he was invited to reclaim the throne. Having initially joined the Shoreham crew as a volunteer Peter Huxtable devoted 43 years to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), during which time he helped to save 449 lives at sea. In 1991 he became the coxswain of the Shoreham Lifeboat and continued as such until 2011. In 2005 Peter was awarded an MBE.

LP CREATIVES & THE ROPETACKLE ARTS CENTRE PRESENT
‘ROBIN HOOD’
Robin at the Ropetackle… It Sher-wood be good to see you this year… Following six years of sell-out fun, LP Creatives invite you to their highly anticipated seventh pantomime ‘Robin Hood’, coming to Shorehamby-Sea this Christmas! It promises to be the biggest, boldest and best one yet! This is Shoreham’s fastest selling panto ever with several shows almost sold out already! The evil Sheriff of Nottingham is fed up with his riches being robbed and will stop at nothing to rule supreme in Sherwood Forest – and there is one man standing firmly in his way! The Sheriff has a dastardly plan to capture the finest archer in the land and maybe bag himself a much revered ‘Silver Turnip’ along the way! Will good win out? Will love triumph? Will somebody please tell me what’s so good about a silver turnip? Don’t miss this feast of fun, fair maidens, fabulous panto magic and the usual madness and mayhem everybody has come to expect in Shoreham come Christmas! Among the highly professional cast this year are Jack Callagan as ‘Robin Hood’, Jordan Pendlebury as ‘The Sheriff of Nottingham’, Sophie Baxter as ‘Maid Marion’, Laura Hyde as the witch ‘Deadly Nightshade’ and returning from last year after an amazing first time at the Ropetackle, the hilarious David Lambert will be rocking the frock as ‘Dame Nora Bone’! Producer Lorna Price from LP Creatives said: “We are so proud of our pantomime here in Shoreham. From no panto at all in 2011 we have been told that we now have a ‘cult status’ within the community and have developed a local family tradition to see the “Shoreham Show” which is lovely to hear. We also have people from as far afield as Portsmouth, Surrey and even Kent specifically coming to see the show – yet there are still people in the area who have no idea there is even a panto here at the Ropetackle Arts Centre!” The adventurous tale of Robin Hood, has all the special features of a traditional pantomime. It sees us riding the mean glens of Sherwood Forest, on the turrets of the Sheriff of Nottingham’s Castle and then down in the depths of Prince John’s dungeons! LP Creatives’Writer and Director Tom Beard said: “There will be the most spectacular sets and costumes we have ever had at the Ropetackle, all with everybody’s favourite fabulous songs – and as per usual, plenty of slapstick fun, general mayhem and a bright fun re-telling of this traditional tale with plenty of crazy ideas that will really bring it all to life!” “The fact that the venue is so intimate really gives us the chance to engage with the audience,” says Producer Lorna Price “it is a pleasure to perform here for such a lovely crowd and I’m sure our cast are going to enjoy it as much as all the kids and grown-ups (and the grown-up kids) too!” Writer and Director Tom Beard said: “There are bigger pantos around but what we at the Ropetackle offer is just as professional. We are bringing a clever and genuinely funny script along with some first rate production values – we have a brand new approach this year too in that we are building a full theatre style setting. There will be a theatre pros along with some lovely sets to really bring the story to life and give everybody a shared magical experience in Shoreham this Christmas! “Every year our audience gets bigger and bigger. We only had a handful of tickets left by the time we opened last year so we have extended the run by a few dates – I urge people to buy now if they want tickets for the show of their choice – most have already been sold for the weekend running up to Christmas Day with only a few weeks to go! Hopefully more people will come and see the story unfold at Ropetackle this year, we promise that everybody will leave with a smile on their face!”
‘Robin Hood’ runs from 13th Dec – 31st Dec 2018. Tickets are available from £12.50 – Family Ticket (2 adults, 2 children) – any seat, any show – £55! BOX OFFICE: 01273 464440 www.ropetacklecentre.co.uk www.facebook.com/shorehampanto 6
Everything ShipShape for Sussex Sailability
I
t was a busy morning of scrubbing, checking and de-rigging for the Sailability volunteers at Sussex Yacht Club recently. Each year the annual lay-up prepares the charity’s 15 specially adapted boats for storage over the winter months, undertaking all the checks needed to ensure that they are ready for the following spring. Sailability was founded by the Royal Yachting Association to allow people with disabilities access to the sport of sailing. The south coast has had some real successes in the sport in recent years with probably the best known being Helena Lucas from Southampton, who won Gold at the London Paralympics and Bronze at Rio. Kevin Headon from Sussex Sailability said, “We provide sailing opportunities for Sussex people with a wide range of physical,
sensory, learning and other disabilities or difficulties. We’ve had a fantastic summer; the weather has been kind to us and has allowed us some wonderful sailing. “However, as we move into autumn, the water and the weather get colder. Our sailors find that, because they can’t move around so easily, they can’t warm themselves up quickly enough or maintain their body heat so we have to stop activity. “So our lay-up day is all about cleaning up the boats, de-rigging and getting them ready for bed for the winter. “Thanks to the hard work of all our amazing volunteers, who kindly gave up their Saturday morning, everything was ship-shape in just a couple of hours.” If you are interested in finding out more about Sussex Sailability and the opportunities that are available then visit www.sussexsailability.org.uk or email sussexsailability@gmail.com.

FESTIVE FUN
W
e are full of festive fun in all our classes, and looking forward to our Christmas Open House event. Each student has the opportunity to show off their musicality and skills with a performance of their choice, while parents and carers mingle over mince pies and hot chocolate! So far this term ‘Shotgun’ by George Ezra has proved a hugely popular choice for the children to learn, so I anticipate that along with ‘Jingle Bells’ this tune will definitely be played by a few. Christmas is a great time for everyone to find their inner musician. Whether it is participating in your local carol service or just humming along to timeless seasonal pop tunes on the radio or YouTube, singing is good for the soul. Some research shows that endorphins, our ‘Happy’ chemicals are released when we sing. Also anytime we breathe deeply, we oxygenate our brains and that too makes us feel more alive, so turn up the volume and sing loud! Learning and playing an instrument also can achieve the same feel good factor. It is also a great opportunity for Santa to deliver a musical gift that will just keep giving. It is well documented that the social and cognitive benefits for all ages, when learning and playing an instrument, extend beyond the immediate activity. Also not just at Christmas but throughout the year, there is joy and reward to be found by both the recipient and giver of a musical instrument, as progress is made and music played for all to hear. Receiving an instrument for Christmas should never disappoint adults or children alike, but it is important that
it is a real instrument and not a toy. Although cheaper, toy instruments are far less durable and usually produce a sound that quickly becomes unbearable to adult ears! And even small children quickly tire of something that sounds bad and breaks easily. This is why I love using Ocarinas and the Nuvo instruments in our lessons, and why I recommend them as great Christmas presents. They are designed for young musicians, colourful, durable, lightweight, child-friendly and most importantly make a great sound for both adult and little ears to enjoy all year round. Wishing you a happy and healthy musical Christmas! Lisa O’Connor Founder and teacher at Happy Tunes Music Makers. Happy Tunes Music classes involve fun games, activities, and tunes to spark a lifelong love of music making. They are underpinned by the importance of movement to fire up young brains to foster all round learning. Acknowledging how exercise directly influences learning and improves the brains potential to process new information. Available in participating schools and nurseries, in Shoreham. Also home educators, and private tuition. Group music classes are up to 60% cheaper than traditional one to one instrument lessons, starting from as little as £5.95 in school. Instruments are provided also freeing parents from the cost of buying an instrument. An emphasis on fun and enjoyment just in the class, means there is also no need for parents to worry about practice at home.
Age 3-4: Little Goose Ocarinas. Age 4-6: TooTs and DooDs. These are recorder size starter instruments that lead onto flute, clarinet and saxophone.

Hello December W
here does the time go? Another year gone, flown by, but what a year! From the soggy start to the year, the Beast from the East, and the really long hot summer that’s equalled the famous summer of 1976, we have pretty much had it all in the
garden, and still, despite that and a few casualties along the way, most things in the garden have survived. For once I’m not going to suggest getting out in the garden to do any work. This December in between the festivities and the over indulgence, use the garden to take some time out. Get some fresh air out there and enjoy it. Even at this time of year 10 minutes out in the garden can really wake you up! Whilst you are out there have a good look around, and a good think and honest assessment of what you want to do in the New Year to the garden. Whether its big plans to change it completely or just small-scale plans as to what bedding plants you want to grow or what new vegetables you would like to have a go at. Just have a really good think and see what will work. Seeing as we will be in the midst of the depths of midwinter, take the time afterwards on a cold or wet day to have a look through some books or on the internet to do some research on what you want to do and make those plans. Do some reading up on the plants you want to grow and give them the best start you can next year, by knowing all you can about them. Knowing where to plant them, how big they will get, whether they like shade, sun, or sheltered positions and how best to look after them. So often I see plants struggling to survive or being discarded because they looked nice as an impulse buy in the garden centre, but they’ve been put in the wrong place and struggle. A little bit of pre-planning and a little bit of preparation will give them a much better chance, you a much better result in the garden, save you money and give you a real feeling of satisfaction as they grow well, and that feeling is priceless. It’s not that hard to start getting green fingers! So whilst you are sat down with a Christmas tipple, in the warm with a gardening book open in front of you, I will wish you all a very Happy Christmas and all the best for a peaceful and Happy New Year. Festive Moods Festive Mood Boosters
With our ever increasingly busy lives the festive season can bring about a lot more stress and pressure within us. It doesn’t have to be this way but somehow many tasks, social gatherings and in general the dynamics of the year finishing off can cause us to feel a little bit more stressed, at a time when our bodies and minds need to be slowing down, relaxing and conserving energy for the winter months ahead. Essential oils are the pure concentrated plant extract that contains many beneficial components to help the body and mind relax plus improve mood, energy and overall well-being. Here are a few simple ways of using essential oil to keep yourself feeling calm, contented and merry this festive season.
Essential Oil Meditation
Take a drop of your favourite essential oil, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a calming one it just needs to have a positive effect and association for you. My recommendation would be one of the following; Frankincense, Sandalwood, Sweet Orange, Lavender or Chamomile. Place one drop of the chosen essential oil onto a cotton pad, find a place where you won’t be disturbed and set a timer on your watch or phone just for 3 to 5 minutes, as after all we can all make time for just 5 minutes! Sit breathing in the scent of the essential oil from the pad and then place it onto your lap, take a few deep breaths in and out and then just observe your breathing, the rise and fall of your belly and chest. Allowing your thoughts to drift in and out and bringing your focus back to the breathe. You might like to play some very quiet background relaxation music. Just let the benefit of the Essential Oil calm your nervous system, focus your mind and gently uplift your spirit.
shower, choose either Lemon, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Lime, Grapefruit, or Peppermint essential oil. Put a few drops onto the shower tray at your feet and let the hot water and steam evaporate the Essential Oils into the air giving you a blast of invigoration, clarity and boosting your mood. It’s also great to clear the sinuses, refresh the mind and set you up for the day, you can also visualise your day going well as you take in the positive essence and send that into your day.
Set the Mood
By adding Essential Oils into your environment and atmosphere they can have a wonderful mood enhancing influence, especially when having family round, social gatherings or parties of any kind. It can really help to set a positive focus, try uplifting citrus oils like Sweet Orange, Bergamot, Frankincense, Geranium, Neroli or combine one or 2 of them by adding a couple of drops of each into an oil burner or diffuser before you have guests. It will make such a huge difference to setting the mood to keep everybody calm and happy. What are the Benefits of Acupuncture?
T
his month I wanted to discuss the benefits of acupuncture with you and explain some common complaints that I have found it useful to treat.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese treatment, using needles at specific points in the body to treat various physical and mental conditions.
What are the Benefits of Acupuncture?
The main benefit of acupuncture which I will be discussing based on the experiences I’ve had treating people is that of pain relief. Acupuncture can be used to treat a whole host of other things, such as combatting cravings like drug abuse, for example, giving up things like smoking, as well as assisting people with sleep or reducing anxiety.
In my practice I find Acupuncture to be most beneficial in the treatment of:
Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

1. H eadaches – Headaches, when I see people in clinic are mainly associated with tension and stress, of which acupuncture really helps with. Sometimes headaches can be caused through referral of trigger points, which required a deeper technique for needling. It is very effective as a treatment to reduce headaches and is my number 1 go to treatment. 2. S ciatica and lower back pain – Over 70% of the time sciatica is caused in my experience through spasm into the gluteal region, not from the lower back directly. Acupuncture is very effective as a means to reduce sciatic type pain. 3. Achilles Tendonitis – Often with Achilles pain, especially with chronic suffers, Achilles can become quite nervy (Tendonosis) in nature and acupuncture provides an excellent way to treat this stubborn problem. 4. P lantar Fasciitis – I’ve treated many people with Plantar Fasciitis and mostly people who present with chronic pain, due to the nature of this injury worsening over time. Acupuncture can really help reduce heel pain and I will use this 90% of the time with a very high success rate. 5. Tennis Elbow – Tennis elbow is an extremely painful condition, which responds very well to a type of acupuncture technique known as periostial pecking. This technique can be immediate and quite miraculous for the sufferer. As the graph shows, marriage has been drifting out of fashion for close to 50 years. There are now over 3.3 million unmarried couples in the UK, of which nearly half have children. In spite of this major social change, governments have largely maintained sharp legislative distinctions between the married and unmarried. When they have combined the two, it is usually to swell the Exchequer’s coffers, for example when applying the high income child benefit charge to unmarried couples with children. This approach is starting to be challenged in the courts: • In October, the Prime Minister announced at the Conservative Party conference that civil partnerships legislation would be extended to KEITH RELF MANAGING DIRECTOR KEITH BONNER DIRECTOR PEMBROKE FINANCIAL SERVICES
cover heterosexual couples. The announcement came after a June ruling from the Supreme Court that limiting Civil Partnerships only to same sex couples was in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). • In a judicial review case in August, the Supreme Court found the government was wrong to deny an unmarried mother her claim for widowed parent’s allowance, again referring to the EHCR in the decision. The Department for Work and Pension’s response was that the judgement did not affect the eligibility regime for bereavement benefits, which replaced the widowed parent’s allowance for new claimants in April 2017. If you are one of the 3.3 million unmarried couples, these decisions serve as a reminder that your status is very different from that of a married couple. Given the DWP’s stance, you could need more life and health protection than if you were married. You will also potentially require a different approach to estate planning, as transfers on death to your partner, such as your interest in the family home, will not benefit from the inter-spouse inheritance tax exemption.

Millie and Paul St Barnabas has been a huge thing in my life. It started with my mum. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February 2015. She went to St Barnabas for pain and medication management. She was so happy there, and it made a massive difference to her. Mum died in April 2015 and then in December 2016, my husband Paul became ill. He was diagnosed with the neurological condition CJD. They say it’s like dementia fast forward times ten. Only 66 people a year in the country get CJD. He was just so unlucky. By the time he got to St Barnabas, everything was shutting down. I never felt like I was putting the staff out. They can never do enough for you. Paul died with dignity. He slipped away really peacefully. Everybody has to go through bereavement but I feel like I had a double dose of it. I’m doing alright now. But there are loads more families who need help right now. Please, will you help St Barnabas be there for them, by making a donation this Christmas? Thank you so much. Department Store Shopping in the 1950s
W
hen Christmas shopping in the 1950s, local residents were spoilt for choice in nearby towns. A short journey by car, train or Southdown bus took shoppers from Shoreham or Southwick to Brighton and Hove with their large range of toyshops and department stores. Gamleys was probably the best-known toyshop in Sussex at the time. It had a branch in Church Road, Hove and also one in Brighton’s Imperial Arcade. These were only two of a chain of stores stretching across South East England, which also included a shop in Worthing, while the head office of the firm was in Hove. The name Gamleys was thought up by the original proprietor of the stores, Bill Lord. He decided to mix the names of the two most famous London stores, Gamages and Hamleys. People might also remember Lynes Toys in Brighton’s Preston Street or the Pavilion Toy Shop in St. James Street. Beals in East Street Brighton advertised themselves as agents for toy maker Tri-ang, and in the North Laines, Sydney Street had the Toyland store. All would have stocked 1950s staples like Dinky cars and lead farm animals, soldiers and cowboys from makers such as Britain’s and Timpo. Lead model ranges in the shape of Santa’s, robins and slightly surprisingly, Scottish terriers, were also supplied to decorate Christmas trees and cakes. Board games including Scrabble, Buccaneer, Taxi and Blow Football were also very popular in the 50s. Presents for the rest of the family might be purchased at one of an array of department stores. In 1952, the abandonment of the wartime utility furniture scheme removed the restrictions on the variety of items for the home that were available. A year later sweets, sugar and eggs were de-rationed, and department stores were able to offer lavish boxes of chocolates and other treats. By the end of 1954, the rationing of butter, cheese and meat also ceased, a cause of celebration for both the stores and their customers. The latest fashions such as the New Look style and new ideas in home design and kitchen gadgetry were also encouraging the 1950s shopper to spend his or her Christmas budget. Departments within the stores such as fabrics and haberdashery encouraged those who shopped early enough to sew or knit their gifts. The department stores of Brighton included Johnson’s, which was on the north side of Western Road, at the corner
with Marlborough Street. It unfortunately burnt down on the 5th of November 1970 and was not rebuilt Another popular department store during the 1950s was Bellman’s with sites in both London Road, Brighton and Station Road, Portslade. Other large stores included Maple and Co in Kings Road, Hove, which offered interior decorations, furnishing and textiles. W.M Hill of Hove was in Western Road and as well as selling fashions, furnishings and home wares, like many of the department stores of the 1950s, it also contained a restaurant where tired Christmas shoppers could take a breather. Many of the shops also offered the services of an onsite seamstress who could adjust a festive party outfit for the perfect fit. Marks and Spencer’s still had a London Road shop too, as well as their Western Road one. In recent years we’ve lost every branch of BHS and Woolworth’s as well as the huge London Road Co-op shop. Back in the 1950s however another department store, which was always busy in the weeks approaching Christmas, was Tomlinson’s in Brighton’s Queens Road. Then there was Hanningtons on the corner of North Street and East Street, Brighton. Smith Hannington, who was born in Shoreham in the year 1784, founded this store. Hanningtons survived fellow department stores Army and Navy and Vokins, but finally closed its doors for the last time in 2001. The Vokins department store in North Street was also a much-loved shopping destination in 1950s Brighton. It survived for over a hundred years, only closing down in 1997. It had originally opened in 1882 as Leeson & Vokins, a silk mercer’s and general draper’s. When in 1925, William Henry Vokins became its sole owner the name changed to W H Vokins Ltd. Later it simply became Vokins of Brighton Ltd. With a vast amount of Christmas shopping now being completed online and several of our remaining department store chains struggling to survive nationwide, the department store shopping experience may be a festive tradition to sample while we still can. Wear it Festive and Make a Difference to the Lives of Local People this Christmas
S
t Barnabas House hospice has launched its successful ‘Wear it Festive’ fundraising campaign. This year, anything goes, from simple seasonal socks to outrageous festive frocks. Local businesses, schools and individuals are being invited to hold an event and fundraise to support the vital hospice care services provided by St Barnabas over the festive period. Whether you get together with colleagues to don your Christmas knits for a small donation, encourage your child’s nursery or school to spend a day in Santa hats, or host a festive dinner party, it couldn’t be easier or more fun to get involved. St Barnabas House provides specialist palliative care both at the hospice and in the local community, free of charge, 365 days a year including Christmas Day. Community nurses continue to provide care for patients over the Christmas period. Wendy Bardsley, Community Fundraising Manager at St Barnabas House, said: “Christmas can be a worrying time for many of our patients and their families, and knowing that our care team is there to support them brings real peace of mind. “Since the launch of Wear it Festive in 2016, the community has raised an incredible £12,000 for St Barnabas House through taking part in the campaign. All donations received will make a real difference to local people. For example, a donation of £68.35 would provide for a visit by one of our Community Palliative Care Team Nurses to a patient’s home, £181 would enable a Hospice at Home nurse to provide a whole night of care for a patient over Christmas and £625 would pay for a 24 hour stay in the In-patient Unit for a patient on Christmas Day.” The team at Shh… Hair Salon in Goring were one of the first to sign up this year, having raised over £300 for the hospice since they first got involved in Wear it Festive three years ago. Steve Hollis who runs the salon plans to wear a festive jumper. Steve said: “Really, I’m not that keen on dressing up, but this is such a great cause. We have all been touched by the work of St Barnabas House.”
S
t Barnabas House is a charity whose aim is to provide high quality, specialist palliative care, both within the hospice and in the comfort of patients’ homes, caring for adults with advanced progressive lifelimiting illnesses. Patients are never charged for their care. It costs £6.5 million each year to run the hospice and only a small part of these costs are state funded. This means that the majority of the money has to be raised through voluntary donations from local communities within the Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield areas. Over the last 45 years, the hospice has cared for thousands of patients and their families in the areas of Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield.
Estate agents from the Goring office of Michael Jones & Company have also registered to take part. James Brock, Branch Manager, said: “It’s a bit of fun that gets everyone involved and raises some money for St Barnabas in the process. As a local company, we like to support local charities like St Barnabas.” You can join in with Wear it Festive at home, work or school on Friday 14 December 2018, or alternatively pick a date that suits you best. Register to take part and receive a free fundraising pack at www.stbh.org.uk/wearitfestive or give one of the Fundraising Team a call to find out more on 01903 254777.

St Barnabas House is pioneering five key new developments to transform local hospice care services. We have created a Disease Specific Nursing Team with dedicated specialist nurses working in key areas of care to support patients with other end stage conditions, as well as cancer. The introduction of this team enables us to provide more specialist end of life care to people in the local area with End Stage Renal
Failure, End Stage Liver Disease, End Stage Respiratory Failure and Advanced Heart Failure. St Barnabas House is one of the leading partners of ‘ECHO’, a 24 hour a day, seven day a week, nurse-led telephone support service for patients who have been diagnosed with a lifelimiting illness. Volunteers are at the heart of the hospice and we have expanded our team of Volunteer Counsellors, Family Services Visitors and Ward Volunteers. We have also introduced a new Dementia Companions element to extend our Community Companions service. During 2017 we introduced a new Therapy Team who work across all areas of the service we provide. We are also exploring new ways in which we can improve the way we support some of our patients at an earlier stage of their disease journey. Finally, our Education Team is supporting 28 care homes through various programmes. We are reaching healthcare professionals across the community to share our knowledge and best practice of palliative care for the benefit of those approaching the end of life. On Yer Bike!!!
I
t may be winter, but if you’re a keen cyclist, a bit of cold or wet weather won’t stop you! However, when pain strikes and your beloved bike is put aside to gather dust while your fellow riders are out accumulating watts, frustration is but one of many words that come to mind. Here, Alex Marek, osteopath at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre shares his experience and some valuable tips on avoiding pain and how to help you get back ‘on yer bike’. Over the years, I have managed myself through a plethora of cycling-related injuries, including; muscles strains, fractured ribs and to top it off a few concussions (inevitably causing ‘dusty bike syndrome’). Using my experience as a personal trainer and osteopath I now try to avoid most pit falls, to help me, however, once upon a time this was not the case. Simple steps could have prevented my injuries. We live and learn. So, what advice can I give you that I wish the younger me had had? Is your bike “fit” for you? – Having a “bike fit” is one of the best ways of preventing back pain, knee pain and other repetitive strains on your muscles, ligaments and joints. It works by optimising your position on the bike, the height of the saddle first and foremost, then the height of the handlebars and “reach” from saddle to handlebars. Each of us is differently built and your head, shoulders, spine, hips, knees and ankles need to be in correct alignment when you are cycling to ensure you can use your body in the most efficient and least effortful way. This is particularly true over longer distances, but however far you are going to cycle, make sure you start right. There are some
useful tips online (just Google “bike fit”), but preferably ask a local professional or experienced cyclist to help you. Carrying that weight – Panniers v. Rucksack? – You won’t win any style awards with a set of panniers, but lugging your day on your back doesn’t look that cool either! With a rucksack, you get a sweaty back, pressure on your spine and it can prevent your ribs from expanding so that your ability to breathe is compromised therefore creating tension. Get some panniers. More breath, more oxygen, more power to those muscles! Ahhhhh. You won’t look back. You’re going to work, not going for gold! – I wish I could have told that younger me not to treat every ride like a sprint for gold. It’s very easy to overstrain muscles and ligaments by powering beyond your capacity and not realise until it’s too late. If you want to go to the “hurt box” and really test yourself, structured training and/or getting involved with organised racing is the best bet – this also avoids the danger of inadvertently harming other road users as you speed by them, let alone yourself! Stretching and breathing! – On longer rides, you can get stuck in a flexed (bent) position over the handlebars on a racer and, even with a mountain bike or hybrid, your upper body can become static and stiff, leading to pain and even numbness in the hands from compression of nerves and blood vessels. An extended neck and wrist position, hunched shoulders and a rounded back, is often the cause. So, when you inevitably get stuck at a red traffic light, sit up straight and roll your wrists in a figure of eight. You could also bring your shoulders back and gently rotate your neck and spine to either side, to release any tight muscles. Coming up out of the saddle and pushing your heel to the road whilst coasting, is also a great way of stretching out your calf muscles.

What to do if you do experience pain? – There are many exercise based treatment options available for lower back pain, including Pilates and core-strength training; there is also evidence to suggest that ‘a free-weight-based resistance training intervention can … improve pain, disability and quality of life (measures) in those with low back pain’ (Welch et al 2015). However, I would advise not lifting free weights without correct supervision and technique, under the guidance of a professional sports trainer. If you are concerned about any sort of pain you’re experiencing during or after cycling, advice and treatment from a qualified therapist is often the best course of action.
