Community Centre improving its looks

S

outhwick Community Centre has been marking the first year of improvement work to the frontage of its buildings. However, this is just a brief pause in the action, because the second phase of work is now about to begin! Adur Council Chairman Cllr Joss Loader visited the centre to meet the team of volunteers who have been leading the project. She congratulated the team on what has been achieved so far. Joss said: “As one of the very first community associations to be established in the UK, Southwick Community Centre plays a central role in local life and I was delighted to see the improvements that have already been carried out. “It’s remarkable to see how much better the community centre now looks from its main entrance in Southwick Street. The new entrance canopy, the landscaping of trees and flower beds, and the new signs create a really welcoming impression. I know the association gave this scheme a lot of thought and consulted widely about the details. The results have certainly paid off”. One special feature of the work is a sculptured panel of rusted steel, which sits in a new flint wall at the rebuilt entrance area. The sculpture was created by local artist Judith Berrill and includes the bold outline of an apple tree. Cllr Loader added: “It’s a wonderful reminder of the orchards that used to grow just behind the Barn and the other old farm buildings now occupied by the community centre.”

The newly-completed entrance area to Southwick Community Centre

The action is now about to shift to the other big section of the street front. The existing gateway into the community centre’s garden will be widened, making it more accessible. There will be new double gates, with new paths and raised flower beds being laid out in the garden itself. The chairman of the community association, Bob Ryder, said the further work would complete the scheme, making the whole 100-yard frontage of the centre more attractive and inviting. “Right from the start we wanted these improvements to bring out the qualities of the old buildings, so they can be better appreciated by everyone passing by, and by everyone wanting to come in. We’re improving access, of course, but we’re also improving the looks of the community centre and its appeal to the public”.

Councillor Joss Loader (centre) with artist Judith Berrill and members of the project team, Dave Comber, Bob Ryder and Malcolm Gough.

Adur East Lions

T

he Lions’ ‘Message in a Bottle’ is well known now in Shoreham and Southwick and is available in most doctors’ surgeries and pharmacies. Building on this success, Lion George Bruce of Adur East Lions has recently had 5000 ‘Message in a Wallet’ information cards produced which the Lions are busy distributing to those who have a need. They work in a similar way to the bottles but are designed to be carried around in a wallet or purse and contain information on medication that a person might be taking and any other pertinent information in case somebody has a medical emergency whilst out and

about. If you would like one please see the Lions at the monthly Artisans’ market in Shoreham or ring Lion George on 01273 048362.

Go the Lions Ladies!

T

he Lions (not the rugby-type!) might not be known for their sporting achievements but some Lions’ members along with Friends of Lions made up a team for the Women’s Softball Cricket Festival at the Hove County Cricket Ground back in September and did very well indeed; especially as they were pitted against teams of much younger women. Well done the women of Adur East Lions! (They are the ones in the blue caps.) If this is the sort of thing you might like to be involved in during the coming year then why not become a Friend of Lions and find out what the Lions are up to. Patient First STAR Awards

T

he lead nurse from Accident & Emergency at Worthing Hospital received a standing ovation from colleagues last week when her name was called out for a special prize. Matron Catherine Keegan won the Compassionate Care Award at Western Sussex Hospitals’ staff recognition awards at Fontwell Park on Wednesday 3 October. Catherine was nominated by the trust’s nursing director for the exceptional care she gives to families who have suffered a child’s bereavement. “I was a bit tearful and I couldn’t quite believe it,” said Catherine, reflecting on the moment her name was called out and the audience rose to their feet clapping. I didn’t expect it at all, but I have to say that I’m only as good as my team – all the nurses, doctors, therapists and admin staff I work with are amazing.” The trust’s ninth Patient First STAR Awards were characterised by heartfelt nominations, humbled winners and joyous celebrations. Thanks to a record 630 nominations, this year’s awards were also the biggest yet, with around 250 colleagues attending the prize ceremony and dinner. The event was hosted by trust chief executive Marianne Griffiths and the organisation’s new chairman Alan McCarthy.

6

Alan said: “This is my third day with the trust and my introduction to Western Sussex Hospitals is this fabulous evening and, as inductions go, I could not have wished for better.” The biggest cheer of the night went to the trust’s porters, who collected the Chairman’s Award to deafening applause and a lengthy standing ovation. Portering manager, Jacqui Campbell, said: “Porters are the true backbone of our trust, doing much that can often go unnoticed. I am so proud of my teams and so happy that they receive the credit they deserve.” In total, 15 individuals and teams from Southlands, Worthing and St Richard’s hospitals in West Sussex proudly took home winners’ trophies and framed certificates. Chief executive Marianne Griffiths said: “Our Patient First STAR Awards are a fantastic way of recognising the incredible work that our staff and volunteers undertake every day. “I sincerely hope that everyone who was nominated, shortlisted or won this year feels valued at Western Sussex Hospitals – our trust is truly special and it’s everyone who works in our hospitals that makes it so.” The awards were funded by the trust’s dedicated charity Love Your Hospital from donations received from patients and relatives wishing to thank staff and volunteers for the outstanding care they have received. TooTs to Flutes

T

his time of year is always exciting as classes are packed full of fun games and activities to teach new festive tunes in time for Christmas performances. November also sees us acknowledge Children in Need with a dotty composition challenge. This year however it is even more rewarding as our first generation of “TooTs and DooDs” students are now in year three, and making music with full size flutes and clarenios (a Nuvo clarinet that is lighter and suitable for children earlier that its traditional counterpart). Also children who have been participating in our ocarina classes, making simple long and short first notes, are now learning to play TooTs and DooDs, exploring their preference for the different sounds and of both instruments and how each is played. It is well documented that learning an instrument at an early age can aid the cognitive development in young children including motor skills and coordination. It is important to me how progressing through the different instruments in our classes reflects and rewards this development. As the children grow, the instruments they use also become bigger and change with them. They encourage and increase their abilities and skills for reading, playing

and making music by also improving finger dexterity, lung capacity and control of facial muscles to create sound. “I love these instruments. It has always been tricky for young children to start woodwind instruments early because their fingers don’t reach. My daughter is 7 and has already been playing over a year thanks to the amazing design of the DooD and now the bigger Clarineo. The instruments are a brilliant stepping stone for young musicians, easy to play and sound good too!” Parent to 7 year old. Happy Tunes group music classes are up to 60% cheaper than traditional one to one instrument lessons, starting from as little as £5.95 in school. Instruments are provided also freeing parents from the cost of buying an instrument. An emphasis on fun and enjoyment just in the class, means there is also no need to for parents to worry about practice at home.

Age 3-4: Little Goose Ocarinas. Age 4-6: TooTs and DooDs. These are recorder size starter instruments that lead onto flute, clarinet and saxophone.

Age 6+:

Flute. Clarenio. jSax.

All are available in participating schools and nurseries, in Shoreham. They are also available for home educators, and private tuition. All classes involve fun games, activities, and tunes to spark a lifelong love of music making. They are underpinned by the importance of movement to fire up young brains to foster all round learning. Acknowledging how exercise directly influences learning and improves the brains potential to process new information.

Crucial November

W

e are in no win November, the clocks have gone back, and winter is clawing away what daylight we have, but on the bright side, it’s not that long until the winter equinox! It’s still been a really dry autumn and very warm as well, there’s not even been many arguments about putting the heating on in our house! I always feel like November is one of the crucial months in the garden since, by the end of this month, the garden starts to take a back seat in peoples’ minds as we almost go into hibernation, with the distraction of Christmas, until we get into the New Year. It’s really important to have a good go in the garden and get things sorted before the worst of the weather hits.

One of the biggest enemies in the garden during the winter is frost. It effects virtually everything in the garden, not just plants, so taking simple measures now will help to prevent damage to much loved plants and ornaments or expensive damage to fixtures such as taps. If you have plants that are likely to be affected and they can be moved in their pot then move them. Inside to a greenhouse is best, but if not, then move them near to a south-facing wall. The heat the wall gets from the sun during the day will help to keep the temperature in which is just a little bit warmer and can make the difference for a plant. If a plant can’t be moved and you feel it needs some protection, then wrapping with fleece or sacking is a good way to protect them. Luckily grass isn’t affected by frost, however if you walk on a lawn after a very heavy frost it can damage the grass, so try and stay off of affected areas. Frost will also damage ornamental pots in the garden, even frost-proof pots can be damaged by very low temperatures, and so wrapping a well-loved pot in bubble wrap can help prevent damage. Don’t forget to protect any taps or water pipes outside, you can buy kits that are quite cheap to do this, or simply wrapping them with bubble wrap will also help as a cheap alternative. Drain down hose pipes and put them inside for winter, and if you have any sort of irrigation kits, drain these down as well, and most importantly take timers off of the system or again wrap these to protect them, as they will split and can be expensive to replace. Another area that can suffer are ponds when they ice up. Don’t forget to put a rubber ball in the water. This allows a little expansion in the ice and helps to prevent damage to the liner as well as making it easy to remove and provide a breathing hole for the pond. We had several instances last year of ponds being emptied where clients had left pumps on during very icy spells. This resulted in the pumps draining out the pond under the ice and the water simply being pumped across the surface of the ice and draining away, leaving the pond empty. Despite all the problems frost can cause it can also do a lot of good for the garden, helping to break up dug over soil, and kill many pests and diseases that are prevalent in the garden so, as always in the garden, Mother Nature seems to balance everything out. If you spend time getting ready for it then it will help minimize its bad effects and you can enjoy the really cold days. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

Winter Warmer

C

osy aromatic evenings – As winter starts to draw in there are some really lovely ways we can use the natural elements to keep our physical health and emotional wellbeing topped up and vital.

Aromatic Home – Bring the light into your home by diffusing or adding to an oil burner a few drops of uplifting essential oils such as Sweet Orange, Lemon, Geranium, Bergamot and spice oils that warm your mood, such as Ginger, Cinnamon and Cardamom that will lend a relaxing atmosphere to your home. Whist having a relaxing effect essential oils can also help to purify the air and be antibacterial when coughs and colds are around, try using Eucalyptus, Lemon Myrtle, Frankincense or Lavender to purify, clear the sinuses and help fight infections. Bathing ritual – Using some of the spice oils such as Cardamom and Ginger in a bath oil can really help boost our blood circulation, encourage good digestive health, easing bloating or IBS, plus give us emotional fortitude and strength to make it through the colder, darker months. Try blending two drops each of spice oils with the addition of Bergamot essential oil into a tablespoon of Carrier oil such as Almond, Coconut or Sunflower oil and add along with Epsom salts to your bath water.

Massage benefits – As a massage practitioner I see first hand the restorative benefits of a treatment. Winter can bring more aches and pains and physical stiffness so not only will massage nurture the skin plus sooth and release tense muscles, with the use of some lovely natural oils, massage can help us to feel good. A study has shown a whopping 70% increase in our white blood cells responsible for keeping our immune system healthy following a massage treatment. You can even do some self massage to your neck and shoulders

with the use of some uplifting essential oils that warm the muscles and ease pain and stiffness plus raise your spirits! Try Black Pepper, Lavender and Lemon blended into a light oil such as almond (blend 1 tablespoon of almond,, 2 drops of each essential oil).

Foot massage – Massaging your own feet is great if you suffer from chilblains or poor circulation, Ginger, Black Pepper and Geranium essential oils for help to improve circulation in the feet and throughout the body. Dilute a drop of each in a tablespoon of Almond oil and massage into feet, then put some warm cosy socks on and feel the glow, not only in your feet but your whole body will benefit. It can be a very relaxing thing to do at the end of the day or when you feel particularly cold. Golfers Elbow

T

his month I will be talking about the painful condition known as Golfers Elbow, which golfers in particular and other racquet sports players can suffer with.

What is Golfers Elbow?

Golfers elbow, or its correct term Medial Epicondylitis, is an inflammation in the tendons that connect the muscles of the forearm to the inner side of the elbow.

Treating issues related to • Back, neck and shoulder pain • Sports injuries • • Pre and post operative rehabilitation • • Muscle retraining and biofeedback • Whiplash • • Ligament sprains and muscle strains • • Postural re-education for poor posture • Treatments • Deep tissue massage • Sports massage therapy • • Joint mobilisation/manipulations • • Active release/cross frictions • • Electrotherapy (i.e. ultrasound, interferential) • • Acupuncture (Trigger Point release, Traditional Chinese) • • Exercise rehabilitation • Posture re-education • • Ergonomic advice and health promotion • Louis Jones Physiotherapy Telephone: 01273 467614 Website: www.sportsphysioshoreham.co.uk Email: louisjones.physio@googlemail.com 2nd Floor, Adur Business Centre, Little High Street, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5EG

14

What causes Golfers Elbow?

Sports, such as racquet sports, golf, and even weight lifting, can cause symptoms of golfers elbow, where the stress of gripping and hitting an object or resisting a heavy object, overstrains the tendons at the point of their insertion at the inside of the elbow.

What are the symptoms for Golfers Elbow? Symptoms include: • L ocalised pain into the bony point at the inside of the elbow (medial epicondyle). •P ain on gripping with the palm up, lifting weights, or carrying heavy bags. •P ain on stretching the elbow, with the elbow straight and the wrist extended with fingers pointing backwards. •P ain on activities where you swing through striking an object such as a forehand in tennis, golf swing or a bicep curl against resistance. •P ain on pressure or palpation to the inside of the elbow. • S welling (not that common) and bruising (very rare).

What can we do to help overcome Golfers Elbow?

• Firstly you should apply ice to the affected area of the elbow for 10 minutes. This would normally happen 2 -3 times in the first 48 hours. • Massaging anti-inflammatory gel into the area can greatly benefit you. • Light stretching of the elbow with the elbow straight and pointing fingers away. • Tennis/Golfers elbow straps can alleviate pressure and tension off of the tendons that insert into the elbow. • Acupuncture can be great for curing chronic golfers elbow complaints. • Physiotherapy treatment is very effective for curing Golfers Elbow. • Changing grips on tennis racquets and golf clubs. • Reducing the amount of strenuous activity, and even resting the area can allow for adequate recovery. If you have any questions from any of the points raised in this article, please feel free to contact me on 01273 467614 or at louisjones.physio@googlemail.com. DO YOU FANCY WORKING ONCE YOU HAVE REACHED AGE 65? More and more people are working past the age of 65 and ‘phased’ retirement is on the rise, according to Office for National Statistics (ONS) data.

KEITH RELF MANAGING DIRECTOR KEITH BONNER DIRECTOR PEMBROKE FINANCIAL SERVICES

Employment at 65 and beyond 1993-2018 16 14

% of Population

12 10 8 6 4 2 0

-2017 -2016 -2015 -2014 -2013 -2012 -2010 -2009 -2008 -2007 -2006 -2005 -2003 -2002 -2001 -2000 -1999 -1998 -1996 -1995 -1994 -1993

The statistics reveal that a growing number of people are working beyond what is still commonly thought of as male ‘pension age’ since the start of the millennium. From May to July 2018, 10.7% of the population aged 65 or over were in employment. Women aged 65 or over are less likely to be working but the proportion who are still working has increased to 8.1% from 4.7% in July 2008. In fact, 65 will be womens’ state pension age (SPA) from November 2018 but only briefly. From December 2018 the next phase of SPA increases begins, reaching a SPA of 66 for both men and women by October 2020. These increases, with yet more rises by March 2028, make it almost certain the percentages quoted in the ONS report will increase further. Not everyone in work beyond age 65 is forced to do so for financial reasons. Some people simply enjoy working and there is a good case for saying a phased retirement is better than the traditional cliff edge approach. Whichever camp you fall into, keeping your options open is important. Just because you currently think you will want to keep on working in your late 60s does not mean that your health, personal or economic circumstances will allow that to happen.

Light Up a Life – Cindy and Terry’s story

I

t’s Christmas again, a lovely time of year to celebrate with family and friends. But maybe, this year, it will be difficult for you. I know how that feels. This will be my second Christmas without my husband, Terry. Terry and I were married for 28 years. I believe that you know when you meet the right person. We always said it was meant to be. He was such fun to be with. In 2012, Terry was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I was so shocked. He was the fittest person I knew. He was only 67. The last six months were tough. From October to January he had chemotherapy. But it was no good. He had cancer in his skull by then. He went into hospital on Valentine’s Day. That’s when they said they would do their best to get him into St Barnabas. v Walking through St Barnabas’ door is like walking into heaven. It felt like I could feel somebody taking a weight off my shoulders. The staff were wonderful. Everybody’s got so much compassion. Terry was only at St Barnabas for two days but it was very important. He passed away peacefully there. Last Christmas, I went to St Barnabas’s Light Up A Life service. I thought it was wonderful. It was just lovely to be able to hold the little candle and just remember Terry. I would encourage anyone in that situation to go.

It’s been 16 months since Terry passed away but I feel he’s still with me. He’s very close. But I couldn’t have got this far if it weren’t for the amazing support I’ve had from St Barnabas. Please, if you can, make a donation to help St Barnabas care for more people in our local community. Thank you so much, Cindy.

Sir David Hare and Christopher Hampton

T

wo of the most well known playwrights and screenwriters of recent times attended Lancing College at the same point in time, and both have written work influenced by their years there. Sir David Hare was born on the 5th of June, 1947 in Bexhill, a town he has memorably described as “the most boring place in the world”. David Hare’s 2011 play ‘South Downs’, was directly based on his experience of being a Sir David Hare scholarship boy at Lancing College. It was produced at Chichester Festival Theatre and has also had a West End run. In an interview David Hare said of his time at the Lancing school, “I was deeply unhappy. I’d been sent to Lancing because my father was always away at sea – he was a purser in the P&O Line – and I hated it… the atmosphere and culture of the play is Lancing in 1962. I had a lot of letters during the Chichester run saying, ‘That’s exactly how it was’.” The character in ‘South Downs’ that Hare has based upon himself is called Blakemore. In the script he is mocked by pupils from more affluent backgrounds for living in a semi-detached house and is told he can’t wear a CND badge on his uniform. Despite his issues with life at the boarding school, David Hare still managed to rise to the position of head boy during his time there. The play received almost entirely great reviews. After Lancing, David Hare attended Jesus College, Cambridge where he was part of the Amateur Dramatics Club. In the 1970s he wrote plays for the Portable Theatre Company and became resident dramatist at the Royal Court before being instrumental in the forming of the influential Joint Stock Theatre Company. In 1984, he became an associate director of the Royal National Theatre on London’s South Bank. They staged his acclaimed trilogy of plays about British Institutions, ‘Racing Demon’, ‘Murmuring Judges ‘and ‘The Absence Of War’. In 1995 he had another West End hit with ‘Skylight’, the story of the life and loves of a teacher in a post-Thatcher Britain. David Hare has also written the screenplays of a number of feature films including ‘Wetherby’ and the 1985 Meryl Streep movie ‘Plenty’, which was based on his own original stage play of 1978.

David Hare’s contemporaries at Lancing College included Christopher Hampton, who helped secure Hare his first proper job, which was as his successor as literary manager at the Royal Court Theatre. Christopher Hampton had been born in Faial, The Azores in 1946. At Lancing College he won house colours for boxing and distinguished himself as a sergeant in the Combined Cadet Force. Christopher Hampton went on to Oxford University where he became involved in theatre. Their drama society produced his first play ‘When Did You Last See My Mother?’ which was based on his experiences at Lancing College. The Christopher Hampton agent Peggy Ramsay was impressed by this promising young writer’s work and play was subsequently produced at the Royal Court. Its transfer to the West End in 1966 resulted in Hampton becoming the youngest writer to have a play performed in there. His 1970 play ‘The Philanthropist’ also proved popular, being a witty response to Moliere’s famous play of 1666 ‘The Misanthrope’. As well as plays Christopher Hampton occasionally writes book and lyrics for musicals including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1993 hit show ‘Sunset Boulevard’. Hampton is possibly still better known for his Hollywood screenplays than he is for his stage work. He movies include two adaptations of Graham Greene novels, ‘The Honorary Consul’ and ‘The Quiet American’. His most famous film to date, which is based on his own stage play, is probably ‘Dangerous Liaisons’, which was directed by Stephen Frears. In 1988 the film won Christopher Hampton the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. In 2007 he was again nominated for an Academy Award for his adaptation of Ian McEwan’s novel ‘Atonement’. SOUTHWICK OPERA – Press Release TRI-OPERA – The Barn Theatre, Southwick. 7th – 10th Nov 2018

S

OUTHWICK OPERA presents TRI-OPERA – three operas performed in one evening. Adapted and directed by Simon Gray, three of the world’s best loved operas have each been abridged to around 35 minutes, retaining the main storylines and each opera’s most powerful and popular melodies. The comedy of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville contrasts effectively with the tragedy of Verdi’s La Traviata and the ancient Chinese fable as told by Puccini in Turandot. These three mini operas are fully staged and costumed, with a great line up of soloists, chorus and performed in English with piano accompaniment. The company is delighted to announce that the accompanist for the performances is Lesley Anne Sammons, one of the country’s most experienced opera accompanists having worked with all the major British opera companies as well as in major opera houses across Europe The cast includes soprano Ruth Kerr singing the title role in Turandot. Ruth has sung with the major British opera companies including English National Opera, Scottish Opera and Glyndebourne Festival Opera and at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago where she sang Mimi in La Boheme. Tenor, Nicholas Buxton, sings the role of Calaf. He has sung at Glyndebourne, Scottish Opera, English National Opera and across Europe. Karen Orchin, a regular performer with Southwick Opera sings the role of Liu. Karen has also sung with

English Festival Opera and Regency Opera. In La Traviata, the role of Violetta is sung by Brighton based soprano Veronica Brooks. With Southwick Opera she has sung the roles of Lady Macbeth and Adina in L’Elisir D’Amore. The role of Alfredo is sung by Tony Adams who has sung many lead tenor roles including Don Jose in Carmen, Cavaradossi in Tosca and Rodolfo in La Boheme, to name but a few. Chris Parke sings the role of Germont. Chris has sung with Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. In The Barber of Seville, the cast is headed by Hilary Jane Andrews as Rosina with Samuel Cousins making his debut with the company as Count Almaviva. Also new to the company is Duncan Shrewsbury as Figaro. Marion Tinkler sings the role of Berta. Appearing in various roles in all three operas are tenor Gareth Ashley, and basses Steve Hawksley and Andrew Holden all of whom have performed with the company. This evening of operatic indulgence is the perfect programme for the opera novice as well as the connoisseur. Performances at the Barn Theatre, Southwick take place from 7th – 10th November at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from 01273 597094 or on line from www. southwickcommunitycentre.org.uk Further information available from SIMON GRAY on 07885 833579.

NO NEED FOR S.A.D.

A

s the clocks go back, the prospect of long winter nights ahead can get us down. In September, SOC highlighted a number of practical tips on staving off S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorder). This month, Mel Maelo, hypnotherapist at Shoreham Osteopathy Centre, explains in more detail the science behind this sometimes debilitating condition and how hypnotherapy can help. According to the NHS, Seasonal Affective Disorder – S.A.D. – is a type of depression that has a seasonal pattern. The exact cause of this disorder is not fully understood, although it is thought that it may be linked to reduced exposure to sunlight during the shorter days of the year. A lack of light affects the levels of two very important chemicals – neurotransmitters – that are produced by our brains; melatonin and serotonin. Melatonin is produced when it gets dark and its action is to make us sleepy – it is how our body knows it is night time and that we should go to sleep. When the nights draw in, we produce more melatonin which makes us feel drowsy and encourages us to sleep more. People who suffer with seasonal affective disorder produce much higher than normal levels of this hormone. Sunlight affects the production of serotonin so as the days get shorter, we start producing less serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is responsible for maintaining a healthy state of mind. Serotonin is what helps us feel motivated, enthusiastic, happy and in control of our life and has a big effect on our mood and behaviour. It also has an effect on our appetite, sleeping pattern, memory and learning ability. People

with all types of depression, including S.A.D., produce much lower than average serotonin levels. There are a wide range of symptoms associated with depression including: • L ow mood, feeling S.A.D. or empty, tearful • Diminished interest or pleasure in daily activities • Significant weight changes, change in appetite and cravings • Sleeping too much, sleep disturbances • Hand wringing, twitching, pacing, tapping foot, hair twiddling etc. • Fatigue, loss of energy • Feelings of worthlessness, helplessness, guilt • Diminished ability to think, lack of concentration, indecisiveness • Loss of libido

Who is at risk of S.A.D.?

S.A.D. is more common in women – about three times more common – and the further away you live from the equator, the more likely you are to suffer. It’s common enough that many of us can relate to these symptoms, but if your symptoms are bad enough to interfere with your life, you may well have S.A.D. In the UK, about 3 people in every 100 have significant winter depression.

Reducing levels of melatonin

The simplest way is to get as much natural sunlight as you can when it is there – even when the sun is not shining that brightly, get outdoors if you possibly can. And for indoors, try replacing your normal bulbs for “daylight bulbs”, which produce a glow similar to natural light instead of harsh artificial light.

Increasing levels of seratonin

Our caring, experienced team offer Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Sports and Remedial massage, 1-1 Pilates sessions Hypnotherapy & EFT and more Call us on 01273 567654 or book online www.shorehamosteo.co.uk 10 Western Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, BN43 5WD

Production of seratonin can be stimulated in a number of ways including exercise, but sometimes even to motivate oneself to do the things that will help can be difficult. Hypnotherapy itself has been shown to stimulate the production of serotonin. A qualified hypnotherapist will work with you to re-examine your views and perception of this time of the year, creating a more positive and relaxed state of being and changing your behavioural patterns. This can break the cycle of seasonal depression by lifting your mood and helping you focus on the positive aspects of your life. Hypnotherapy facilitates reducing sometimes long-held negative beliefs, allowing you to regain your enthusiasm and confidence and reframing what winter means to you, allowing you to feel more like your summer self! To find out more about how hypnotherapy can help with SAD and other issues, please contact Mel at SOC 01273 567654 or info@shorehamosteo.co.uk To advertise call: 01273 452065 • www.insideshoreham.com
