Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello and Welcome to the April edition of Inside Shoreham and Southwick, I would like to say a big thank you to all our readers, especially those who have given us such positive feedback recently. Your readership matters not only to us but to all the local businesses and local charities that you support. Now that spring is here. I have noticed that finally my bulbs in my front garden are shooting up and there are even daffodils in the green where we live. It is also certainly a lot warmer. In this month issue we have the latest from Mark Oakley on what you should be doing to get your garden looking fabulous after the cold winter ( page 8.) We also have some local news from our supporting police officers. Apparently, there have been a few spates of stealing from allotments and with the new season now upon us they are offering

some sound advice on this.( Page 6). If you would like to meet PCSO Hollin and PCSO Hill, they will be at the Shoreham Centre on the 28th April. For the third year running the Hospice Roadtrippers will be starting their third 5 day journey to raise money for St Barnabas. They will be launching their new endeavour on Bank Holiday Monday 3rd May from St Barnabas House in Worthing. Worthing Major Noel Atkins and MP Tim Houghton will be there to wave the road trippers off. (page14) That is just some of the activities and local news you can read about in the magazine which is occurring in Shoreham and Southwick area. Southwick Bowling Club Centenary m

emberS oF SouthWiCk outdoor bowling club are celebrating the club’s centenary this year in a non stop programme of prestige matches and social events which starts in May and ends with a grand presentation dinner in November. Highlights include home matches against a Bowls England team, the Sussex County Executive, the Sussex vice presidents, Adur District Council (members and staff), Shoreham lifeboat crew and the London Welsh. There are away matches against the Royal Household at Windsor, and the Royal Hospital at Chelsea. The season concludes with a club coach tour to Bournemouth in September. Every member of visiting teams to the Southwick Club in the Recreation Ground this season will receive a commemorative gift. A new club flag has been designed and an exhibition about bowling and the history of the club will be open every Saturday morning during the summer at the Manor Cottage, Southwick, courtesy of the Southwick Society. (see caption re David Hubbard at end of this press release) Information about bowling as a recreation and how to join a club is available at the exhibition or from the club secretary, Desmond Collins (01273 593471). After much research, a 48 page booklet with many historic pictures of former players has been produced and every club member will receive a copy (see further attachment). In a foreword, club president and chairman Brian Simmonds recalls that the club was formed on February 18th 1910 at a meeting in Southwick Town Hall. It was strictly men only and it was not until 1969 that a ladies’ club was formed. The present club became a mixed club in 2005 and the centenary celebrations are being shared fully by both men and women. Mr Simmonds says, ‘Life has changed dramatically over the past century but the game of bowls with its tradition of competitiveness combined with fair play and polite etiquette remains one of the great constants.’ Each year the club nominates a charity which members support. This year funds will be raised for the new Shoreham Lifeboat house.

Edwin originally comes from Shoreham, he attended local schools including, the formally named, King’s Manor. He was a member of St Mary’s church choir and is a graduate of Trinity College of Music. oW iS the time for all us garden and allotment enthusiasts, to get going now the better weather is here! A lot of garden items were being stolen last year such as pots, ornaments, bird baths, sun dials, bird tables to name a few. If you are able, such items should be secured to the ground using concrete or such. Anything that needs to be moved i.e. barbecue, table, seating should be secured when not in use. Never leave a ladder in the garden, this can be used by the criminal, don’t make things easy. Make sure your allotment buildings are well secured also. Take any valuable things home if possible. Reports have come in regarding other items taken from front gardens. Do not to leave anything insecure in the front garden, like bikes, pushchairs, wheelchairs, insecure trailers and motorcycles etc.

Sussex Police, West Sussex Fire Brigade and Adur Watch recently arranged several evening events at the Southwick Skate/BMX Park, whereby mobile lighting was erected in order that all budding BMX enthusiasts could pursue their sport after dark. This proved to be very popular, and gave the youths something to do. It was spectacular to watch and takes a great deal of skill and energy. It was unfortunate that some of the planned evenings were rained off. The good news is that Adur Watch advise that the new Skate/BMX park in Shoreham should be finished very shortly. Recently a BMX bike was taken from outside McDonalds. Please make sure you do not leave your bikes unattended/ unlocked anywhere, it only takes a few seconds and it could be gone. Knowing how much these machines mean to you, don’t take the risk.

Y the time you read this we should be well into Spring (I hope I don’t regret saying this!) with lighter evenings, the clocks having changed and with each day the sun getting stronger, warming the garden to encourage growth. The garden should be starting to catch up with the time it has lost at the beginning of the year with this horrible Winter. As always be aware of frost or sudden cold snaps though. Remember the snow fall we had in April a couple of years ago? With the madness of the long Easter weekend in the garden, many of you will hopefully have had a good chance to get out into the garden and got to grips with many of the jobs that have needed doing for some time. Don’t worry if you are a little late with some jobs. Nature doesn’t run to out calendar, so be guided by the weather. If it means pruning or planting a little late, the plants will cope. The centre piece of most gardens is the lawn. Without the sight of green grass, many people feel a garden isn’t complete. Personally as much as I love grass I can also see the attraction of other alternatives such as gravel gardens and even artificial grass, if it suits your circumstances and you can’t or don’t want to cope with the regular maintenance. To get the best from the lawn, taking care of it is essential. I have laid lawns that 5 years on look like bowling green’s where they have lovingly been looked after. I have also 8

seen lawns we have laid that have been virtually destroyed in 12 months through lack of any care. Now is also a good time to look at having a new lawn laid, giving it time to establish before the drier weather sets in. It’s the perfect time to work on the lawn and get it ready for the summer. It’s a good idea to give the lawn a feed. These are available from most garden centers and contain just the right mix of nutrients to give the lawn a boost. It takes a lot of wear and tear and is made up of lots of tiny plants after all. Follow the instructions carefully on these feeds however as too much can do more harm than good. Get rid of any unsightly weeds such as dandelions, thistles or plantains that will be starting to show themselves. These can be easily dug out. Any bare patches can be patched in with either seed, or new turf. If you are removing any turf for new beds, it’s always useful to look for any patches that need repair as they will blend in well with the rest of the lawn. Before you start the annual ritual of mowing the lawn, check that the blade is sharp; otherwise it will tear the grass, causing further damage. Cutting the grass is undoubtedly one of the best ways of maintaining it. It encourages new and thicker growth and it also helps to eradicate the larger weeds. Make sure you keep the mowing regular though, and set the height of the blades to suit the growth

of the lawn. A good first high cut and a trim of the edges will make the world of difference to the look of the whole garden and the smell of the grass will make you think summer is on the way. Mark Oakley,, Any Garden Limited

n the 4th March, the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted to keep the bank base rate at 0.5%. The rate has remained at this all time low for a whole year now, reducing to this level on 5th March 2009.

Who are The Monetary Policy Committee? The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meet monthly to decide on the country’s interest rates. They are made up of nine members – the Governor, Mervyn King, the two Deputy Governors, the Bank's Chief Economist, the Executive Director for Markets and four external members appointed directly by the Chancellor. The external members are appointed to give “outside thinking” to the committee. Each of these members are experts in the field of economics and monetary policy, they are all independent and do not represent any particular area or group. During the month they are extensively briefed by Bank of England staff, and Agents who talk directly to businesses to find out about trends and future prospects. The meeting takes two days, and the decision is made and announced on the second day at 12 noon. Each member has one vote.

The driving force behind interest rates is the stability of our economy. The interest rates are used as a tool to keep inflation to a certain level, the Government’s target is 2%. If inflation goes above this level, the panel can increase the rate as a measure to reduce the amount we spend, bringing prices and inflation down. Interest rate moves take time to filter through to the economy, so the MPC is always looking at trends and future predictions.

What are the predictions? Many people have worried about the recent inflation statistics, there has been a rise from 1.1% in September last year to 2.9% in December. A number of factors have caused this, some temporary. So let’s see what the Governor of the Bank of England Mervyn King had to say in his report of the 10th February. If inflation rises over their target of 2%, he has to write a letter to the Chancellor explaining why. Mervyn King says “This would be the third episode when inflation has temporarily moved above the target by more than one percentage point, requiring me to write an open letter to the Chancellor. On both previous occasions the MPC said that inflation would come back down. On both previous occasions 10

Pril iS a fabulous month for wildlife. Nature bursts into life after a long, hard winter. Hibernating animals are waking up and birds are singing their hearts out heralding the arrival of spring.

Wildlife Watching: Cuckoo One of the most familiar sounds of spring is the call of the cuckoo. The distinctive call is made by the male bird and is heard from April onwards when the cuckoo returns from wintering in southern Africa. Cuckoos do not build their own nests but simply lay one egg in the nest of another species leaving the egg to be hatched and chick raised by surrogate parents. Females can lay up to 20 eggs during the season and will exactly replicate the egg of the chosen host species. Nests they chose often belong to meadow pipits, dunnocks and reed warblers. If the cuckoo chick is of similar size to the host’s own offspring they tend to be reared together but if the cuckoo baby is much larger it will push the other eggs or chicks from the nest to ensure it gets the undivided attention of its host parents and all the food.

Cowslip The cowslip is a well-known spring plant which was once very common in meadows and on the Downs, but is now more likely to be seen on roadside verges. The attractive 12

yellow flowers hang downwards from a tall leafless stem and have a honey scent. According to legend, cowslips first appeared from the ground where St. Peter dropped his keys to heaven, which accounts for some its common names including key flower and bunch of keys. The plant’s modern name is derived from the Old English word, cu-sloppe, meaning a cowpat, as they were once very common in meadows grazed by cattle. Why not give wildlife a helping hand and do one thing to help the creatures living in your garden or local park.

Hospice Roadtrippers ride again

iVe CountrieS in five days in cars over 10 years old. That’s the challenge three Worthing men have set local petrolheads – and to raise thousands of pounds for local hospice, St Barnabas House. This is the third year that the friends, Alan Nye, Paul Lynch and Jay Harvey have organised their Hospice Roadtrip, raising over £20,000 along the way. The first trip was organised in memory of Jay’s wife, Alison, who tragically died at the very young age of just 29 years having spent her last days being cared for at St Barnabas House. The three friends share a love of cars and so decided to

undertake this epic journey passing through England, France, Holland and Belgium, finishing at the Nürburgring in Germany where they put the cars through their paces on the world-famous racetrack before returning home. The second year saw a massive increase in support with eight teams of two taking part in the Hospice Roadtrip, including a special Spirit FM team who broadcast progress reports along the way to local listeners back home. This year, Spirit FM is once again entering a team and will be providing regular updates throughout the five day journey. There are

ten teams already signed up with just four places left to fill. Worthing Mayor, Councillor Noel Atkins and MP Tim Loughton will wave the Roadtrippers off on Bank Holiday Monday 3rd May 2010 from St Barnabas House in Columbia Drive, Worthing. Said Alan, “We are hoping to smash last year’s total of £17,000 and this year the money we raise will be going to the Building a Dream appeal to help

build the brand new St Barnabas less than a mile away from the current site. We have visited the new site and seen the plans and it’s going to be an amazing building. The new hospice will be much bigger with individual rooms for patients, all with en suite facilities. The Day Hospice will be able to welcome more patients with better facilities for consultations, complementary therapies, art and many other activities. The new site is over twice the size of the current one and the gardens are going to be beautiful. There will be individual gardens for the patients making it possible for them to enjoy the outdoors – the nurses will even be able to take the beds outside if patients wish. And visiting relatives will be able to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the wildflower meadow, lavender maze and natural pond in the new grounds. Shoreham to Steyning Line t

odaY the doWnS Link walk from Shoreham to Guildford follows the line of a disused railway track for most of its route. This line, which connected to the West Coastway line between Brighton and Portsmouth at Shoreham once allowed travellers from Shoreham to travel to nearby local stations at Bramber, Steyning, Henfield and Partridge Green as well as providing a direct route to Horsham and connection to London. In 1844 the London and South Western railway company wanted to build a line linking Portsmouth with Horsham, Chichester and other West Sussex towns. It would have passed through the Adur gap in the Downs and link to Shoreham, then an important port. Hearing of this plan their rivals, the London and Brighton railway company (shortly to become the London, Brighton and South Coast railway) also became interested in the potential of a line through the Adur Gap. However a recession around 1847 caused them to abandon any immediate plans to build a line. In 1856 some Steyning residents formed a company to connect the town with the Brighton line that had been open since 1840. This would be invaluable to local farmers, enabling agricultural produce to be quickly carried from the farms to the growing towns of the South and to London. Again rival railway companies clashed over the territory and the route was redrawn several times, with the possibility of the line passing through either Horsham or Billingshurst to reach Guildford in the North of the area. Finally work on the line commenced in 1859, on a section linking Shoreham and Partridge Green, under the supervision of the contractor Mr Firbank. On the 1st July 1861 this section opened and by 1867 there were three services a day from Brighton via Bramber, Steyning and Henfield. The next section to be built allowed trains from Brighton to reach Horsham, and a daily timetable was put in place giving four stopping services and an express. In 1865 the northern part of the line between Horsham and Guildford opened. The Guildford section of the line involved entering and leaving Horsham in the same direction and often involved a

lengthy wait at Horsham. In 1866 the line had its first serious accident when at Itching Field Junction two passenger services collided resulting in one fatality From as early as 1861, special excursion trains were arranged at weekends and bank holidays to take day-trippers and school children on visits to popular tourist attractions. The first excursion was down to Portsmouth and later trips brought people from London and elsewhere on the coast to local attractions like Potter’s museum and the pleasure garden in the grounds of the castle at Bramber, Steyning’s thriving market and Shoreham’s famous Swiss Gardens. As well as the farming community, and tourism, industry in the Adur valley was quick to utilise the freight potential of the new line. There was a brick makers at Southwater that appreciated the easy transport of their heavy product, and of course the cement works at Upper Beeding. The cement works needed a variety of loads transported to and from its production line and chalk quarry. Coal to power its works from Dover, gypsum for cement making from Robertsbridge and other general goods came in, and cement and flints from the quarrying were exported from the site. The cement was bound for the British Portland Cement depot in Southampton via the main coastal route. During the First World War the Steyning line proved invaluable in carrying military equipment, ammunition and personnel to Newhaven port. In the Second World

War again it served this purpose. General Montgomery made his headquarters at Wiston House near Steyning and there were The Royal Canadian Mounted police based at Henfield and Canadian 1st Division and Royal Ulster Rifles camped near Shoreham airport. The Steyning line enabled these troops to be swiftly mobilised as well as swiftly moving supplies of all kinds to the forces preparing to take part in the Normandy landings. In 1948 the railways of Britain became nationalised. Unfortunately in the cash strapped post war years the planned electrification of the Steyning line was cancelled. In 1963 a census showed over 12,000 passengers a week used this line, but Beeching’s report of the same year placed the line among those carrying less than 5000 a week and signalled the intention to end passenger transport on it, also claiming controversially in light of the figures that it cost more to operate than it bought in, in revenue. Also in 1964 diesel locomotives replaced the steam ones on this route. The last passenger services on the Steyning line ran on Sunday 6th March 1966, and soon after much of track began to be dismantled. A single track remained between Beeding Cement Works and the junction to the main line at Shoreham, reached by the now demolished second rail bridge over the Old Shoreham Road. horeham based Samba band Beach Bateria held its AGM recently and reflected on 10 years of successful gigs and a continuing good spirit reflecting in several bookings already to hand for the coming year. Beach Bateria play for all occasions ranging from The Lord Mayors Show in London, Brighton Pride,where they have led the parade,summer carnivals at Hurstpierrepoint,Littlehampton and Horsham. Emsworth food festival has also been a regular as has Steyning Christmas shopping evening. Locally the band has played at every Beach Dreams festival since it inception in 1999 as well as their own shopping events in the town. Children in Need has also been supported and several hundred pounds raised. After playing at a local wedding in April the band then play the

Brighton Children's Parade on May 1st to kick of this years fun. Two new innovations for the coming year are a new costume displayed with much approval at the AGM -and a move to Church of the Good Shepherd Church Hall in Kings Walk for practice on a Wednesday evening. Bateria means Drum Kit in Spanish and Portuguese hence Beach Bateria being a percussion unit. New members are always welcome - no musical ability is necessary although a sense of rhythm would be an advantage and a sense of fun is a necessity. alking through the street at night recently, I couldn’t help but notice that determined breed of people who have been fired up by the Brighton Marathon! Garbed in many colours they increasingly fill the street, determinedly pounding the pavements towards their goal. Running or walking brings many benefits, from improved fitness to feeling positive as the feel good chemicals kick in and let us not forget that satisfaction of achievement. Plus some of the running gear looks pretty cool too! When it comes to running, your feet are the most important asset for your success, in more ways than you think. Indeed in the animal kingdom, of which we are part, healthy foot function can be a matter of life or death. Here is a snippet! There is a tenuous link between the feet of a runner and the feet of a Cheetah. Can you guess what it is? We all know a Cheetah achieves high speeds but 24

how? Well, it is all in the length of their claws. When a Cheetah runs, unlike other big cats, they keep their claws slightly extended, giving them extra leverage in their propulsion. Studies have also shown that human runners differ according to their sport. Sprinters have longer toes and shorter heels (1) when compared with distance runners. Conversely, a distance runner has shorter toes with a larger heel because, in distance running, long toes use up much more energy! Is modern design catching up with nature as a frontrunner? Well, some of the modern running shoe designs try to make more use of our toes, for example, the Vibram five-finger running shoe. Though the jury is out on what makes the best running shoe, as we are all quite individual, it does seems that more attention is being paid to our feet and how they work, even the individual joints within them! Yet, whether it is speed, distance or injury avoidance

there is a subtle aspect to foot motion that can have profound affect on our running / walking. Namely, the quality of movement in the 33 joints between those 26 bones in your foot. Take the big toe. It likes to have freedom to bend up and down against the long bone just behind it. When it doesn’t it can contribute to back ache and pain (2, 3). Inside the ankle is a bone that takes all the twists and turns of the foot and passes them up the leg. It too can get stuck and make us feel that things just seem a “bit stiffer” or may contribute to muscles functioning poorly (4). They all affect smooth running.
