eeLing reALLY gooD inside? These days it seems almost a distant memory! Shoreham`s newest Health & Beauty Centre Feel Good Factor was opened last month. Owner Yvette Jordan has been working around the local area for the last four years and her loyal following of clients welcome her new venture. Yvette`s proven approach has an extremely effective, new way forward for our Health, Weight, Diet, Inch-Loss, Exercise and Beauty. It stems from her 27 years experience and the fact she is a Lymphoedema Therapist. She said “When I started Outside In Detox four years ago the health benefits that women were experiencing were truly amazing. I needed to know
more medically what was happening to give all these amazing results. On my course as a Lymphoedema Therapist I learnt obesity is one of the causes of Lymphoedema, but this devastating condition actually happens very, very, very slowly. “You can diagnose early warning signs and visibly see the symptoms happening up to 5-10 years beforehand, and you can actually see these early stages in many overweight women, walking around. What is very sad, is they do not have any idea what is happening to them. And it`s all down to the lymphatic system becoming extremely sluggish and stagnant and basically being ignored, purely because we don`t understand how it works.”

APRIL 2011
Shoreham & Southwick editor’s comment
Hello and welcome to the April Edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine. Spring is most definitely here and we are heading into those summer months. This is the month when the outdoors becomes a lovely space to occupy and of course for us to pull on our garden boots and gloves to tackle the gardens after many months of neglect. This month is truly inspiring. It is also when I start noticing that windows don’t look as shiny as they should, that the grass has definitely shot up and there is certainly a lot of stuff scattered in corners of the garden which happen to belong to my other half! Now, I cannot forget that this month is Mothers Day, so I hope that you have a great day being pampered by those you love and in turn, pamper those you love. I am certainly looking forward to being spoilt. As usual we have a large ‘Whats On’ section of things to see and do, a feature on a great new play in The Barn plus whole host of local businesses ready to serve you. On that note I wish you all a great month! Angela

MP gets on his bike for Chestnut Tree House T im Loughton MP is supporting The Downs Link Challenge. He has pledged to cycle across the stunning scenery of The Sussex Downs Link Trail to raise funds for Chestnut Tree House, the only children’s hospice in Sussex. The hospice cares for children and young adults 0-19 years of age with progressive life limiting and life threatening illnesses from all over the county. Because of his role as Parliamentary Under Secretary For Children and Families Tim Loughton takes an extra special interest in the fund raising for Chestnut Tree House. He is urging cyclists and walkers to join him on Saturday 21st May and TAKE THE BIG CHALLENGE FOR 2011! The event starts at Bramber Castle from 8am. This annual bike ride of up to 30 miles across the stunning scenery of the Sussex Downs is a great, family friendly event.
Cycling is a great form of exercise, and most importantly it’s fun. There are lots of health benefits associated with regular cycling. Your cardiovascular fitness will improve and this means you’ll lower your risk of heart attack and stroke. On average, 350 calories an hour are burned off during leisure cycling so it’s a good way to lose weight. Pedalling is low impact, so you can improve muscle tone without stressing your knee and ankle joints. The Downs Link Challenge has the advantage of being mainly off road, following the route along the old dismantled railway line between Bramber and Christ’s Hospital. The countryside is beautiful and the wildlife is plentiful. The Downs Link Challenge has raised over £30,000 so far for Chestnut Tree House, the only hospice for children in Sussex. Every penny is vital to this valuable service…so… Get on your bike and join Tim at The Downs Link Challenge! Log onto www.downslinkchallenge.co.uk for all the details, maps and entry forms.

COuncil saveS ICONIC red phone boxes for £1 each
T
hree iconic 20th century red phone boxes have been saved from destruction by Adur and Worthing Councils. The councils adopted the kiosks from BT for £1 each and are now looking for the best ideas to give them a creative new lease of life. Up and down the country red phone boxes are finding new uses as temporary art exhibitions, information centres and book exchanges. The kiosks, in the East Street Shoreham, The Steyne Worthing and at Coombes in Lancing, will get a new lick of paint to smarten them up, before starting their creative life. Cultural projects officer, Pamela Driscoll said: "The red phone box is as famous as the red London bus when it comes to symbols of British heritage. We believe our three are well worth saving for future generations and for visitors to enjoy." "We hope local people will get enthusiastic about this project and look forward to hearing from community and art groups some imaginative ways they could be used - apart from superman’s changing room." The councils are looking for local interested groups to take on running and organising the red phone boxes. They also want to hear ideas for their use and/or anyone who would like to get involved to contact : Pamela Driscoll on 01273 263274 or e-mail her at pamela.driscoll@adurworthing.gov.uk or write to here at at Adur District Council, Room 229, Civic Centre, Ham Road, Shoreham by Sea, BN43 6PR

Neighbourhood Policing MEET YOUR PCSOs
PCSO Maireadh Knight MARINE WARD WEEK OF ACTION
One of the priorities that came out of my last Neighbourhood Panel meeting was drink driving on Shoreham Beach. As a result of this, Sussex Police are organising a week of action. Many police officers will be involved in this operation. We will be spending time on Shoreham Beach at different times of the days throughout a particular week. The dates of this week, for obvious reason, will not be advertised to the public.
Beach Dreams
We approach that time of year when our fabulous Beach Dreams event takes place. The main weekend event this year will be on Saturday 4th June and Sunday 5th June. On the Saturday it all starts at 12 noon. I am looking forward to working over this weekend and I am sure I will be seeing many of you there.
St Mary South Ward
As of January I have now taken over this ward from my colleague PCSO Hill. PCSO Hill has moved to Southlands Ward. Generally speaking, the town has been fairly quiet.
Home Security
Can I remind you all to please double lock your front and back doors at night. Please do not leave your house keys and car keys in easy sight or reach to these doors. I also wish to remind you all to NOT leave personal belongings in your cars. Just putting then in the glove box is not really enough. Remove items of value and take them into your homes for safe keeping.
ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR Young persons drinking alcohol is an ongoing issue which the Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) constantly tackle. Much work is done to reduce the consumption of alcohol by young persons which often leads to an increase in crime. This may be in either perpetrating crime or becoming a victim. The NPT work alongside the community ,speaking to licensed traders, parents & peer groups , targeting issues surrounding alcohol .NPT also work closely with other agencies who can offer help to those who are effected by alcohol either directly or indirectly. Various powers are used to deal with young persons who have either consumed alcohol or have it in their possession or are in a group of people who have alcohol. All the team now carry alcohol dip strips that indicate if a drink has alcohol it. A comprehensive follow up of any persons stopped involved in alcohol is also completed & Alcohol Warning letters are sent to parents on a first stop & should there be further incidents, home visits with a drug & alcohol worker are also done. This policy has shown clear & positive results. Over the last 6 months in Adur, 92.16 % of youths having Alcohol warning letters have not come to notice again. The public must also remember that proxy buying for underage persons is against the law. The penalty for the person buying the alcohol can be an ÂŁ80 on the spot fine or up to ÂŁ5000 if prosecuted.

he BAnK oF England base rate remained at 0.5% after the Bank of England met in March. As most of the lenders have low variable rates currently, many people are just staying on their lenders standard variable rates for the time-being, something unheard of only a couple of years ago. In fact, the standard variable rates are so competitive that most lenders have withdrawn them from the market for new borrowers. Only those already with the lender can take advantage of the lower rate, normally when their initial rate period ends. This is OK for the moment, but what happens when rates start to increase again? People are fine when rates are low, but they won’t feel so happy when their payments start to increase. Bear in mind that you will have settled into your lower budget, so an increase could have quite an impact. With the Bank of England under pressure to increase the rates, many people are starting to feel uncomfortable on their variable or tracker rates, wondering when the first increases will occur. There are many differing views on this. The number of people in the Monetary Policy Committee voting for an increase has gone from one to three over the past few months. This has led many to think that an increase will come sooner rather than later. Then, we get shock news of the tsunami in Japan. Many predict this will mean rates staying lower for longer. Economists can never plan for such sad and catastrophic events.

If you wish to fix your rate, timing is crucial to ensure you get the best deal. If you wish to fix your rate, timing is crucial to ensure you get the best deal. Not only that, you should compare the whole of the market and gear your new mortgage to your own personal situation. You may want flexible options, some fixed rate mortgages allow overpayments, others do not. Depending on the size of your mortgage it may be worth paying a higher fee to secure a slightly lower rate, this can save you pounds over the term of the fixed rate. If you have a smaller mortgage, then a fixed rate with a low fee might suit. All of this needs to be calculated and compared. It is also crucial that you apply to the right lender. Every lender is surprisingly different in how they lend, this is even more pronounced in the current market. This is a time when 8

the daffodils of spring D
AFFoDiLS eVerYWhere, LighTer evenings and warmer sunnier days. Those dark snowy days of December seem a long way off now. With the increasingly longer days, the gardens are starting to get into high gear, making use of all that daylight. That means you really need to start getting to grips in the garden, or before you know it, it will have the upper hand on you! As I always say it’s much easier to tackle small jobs in the garden and break down larger tasks into smaller targets. You feel like you are making headway and get a sense of achievement, and avoid the feeling that you have bitten off more than you can chew. It’s also helpful to get into routines to carry out small regular tasks. For example, if you try weeding the garden once a month, then you really have a job on your hands. Do it once or twice a week and its easy to keep on top of it, especially before the small weeds start sowing their seeds. They seem to almost walk across the garden once they get established. In fact planning in the garden is one of the easiest ways to be successful and to save money in the garden. At this time of year it’s easy to get the gardening bug, as we are all itching to get on with it. Who hasn’t seen people coming out of the garden centres on a Sunday afternoon with armfuls of bedding plants, without thinking where 10
they will go? You end up with plants left over and being shoved into any old place in the garden just to avoid throwing them away. The result is usually a disappointment and a waste of money. The same is true with sowing seeds. I’m guilty on this one! I get the bug and start sowing up trays and trays of seeds, which are far more than I need. If I planted them all I would need a farmers field! It’s always worth sowing some extra as after the birds, slugs, snails and the frost have taken their toll you usually need some to replace them. But it really is a waste to sow too many, and the spare seeds will keep till next year. It’s also good to get into the habit of planting some every few weeks so later in the year you will get a secessional harvest, rather than all the produce over a week or two. Once the freezer is full and the friends and family are overloaded with runner beans and courgettes, they end up as compost. So for the sake of an hour or two in the garden, and more importantly the contents of your wallet have a good look around and make a list of what you actually want to plant and buy. It really is a good way of thinking in the garden even with larger projects. It amazes me how many clients I go to see who want a large amount of work done in the garden, but haven’t really thought at all about what they want to do. Its always worth having a plan,
and besides which its another excuse to walk around the garden with a drink in your hand, whilst you think it through! Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

the Mystery towers
A
T The enD of the First World War, two huge concrete towers were constructed amid much secrecy at Shoreham harbour. In the spring of 1917 work began on the concrete tower bases, which were built on dry land before being floated to into position in the harbour itself. The concrete bases were hexagonal in shape, made up of honeycomb cells. These cells, when empty, allowed the tower to float and be towed by a ship, but when flooded with water they enabled the construction to sink in the ocean to a depth where only the actual tower part would still be on the surface. Each base had three concrete tiers built on it, diminishing in size as they rose, giving the towers one of their nicknames – the Wedding Cakes. Each entire construction was 170 feet across at the base and 190 feet tall. The 50-foot high round turret was made of steel girders clad in timber. A smaller round turret was perched on top of the larger one. Made of steel it was topped by cranes capable of lowering equipment or boats, and a base designed for an anti-aircraft gun to be mounted on. Inside there was submarine detecting equipment and each tower was equipped to house
12
ninety men at sea. The Mystery Towers were designed by G. Menzes and built by the Royal Engineers for the Royal Navy. Shoreham was chosen as the construction site partly because of the amount of shingle available to help make the concrete. Also a dry dock could by constructed at harbour’s eastern end, conveniently served by a single-track railway to bring in building supplies. The workers were housed in a camp of huts at Southwick Green and at their peak the civilian and military personnel working at the site numbered between 3000 and 5000. Working both day and night, the men completed two towers, finished the bases for two more and had others under construction, by the end of the war. Costs had rocketed to £2.5 million for the first towers. Now with the end of hostilities the towers that had been built for a mysterious wartime purpose had no practical use and construction stopped. Still the authorities did not reveal how the towers would have aided the war effort. One of the most plausible theories suggests that Winston Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty, intended having around fourteen of the towers built and lowered to the seabed across the straits of Dover, a mile or so apart. With only their steel towers above the water, each would have been manned by a gun crew, with anti-submarine nets and mines sunk between them. The purpose would have been to stop German submarines from entering the English Channel.
After the end of the First World War, the two fully constructed towers did cause an obstruction, not to enemy vessels but to ships using Shoreham harbour. For a while they were just left there to rust. Then on the 12th September 1920 one tower was slowly towed out into the harbour by five tugboats, watched by crowds of curious onlookers. It began a laborious forty-one mile journey to a sandbank beside the Isle of Wight. Named Nab’s Tower, it took the place of the old Nab’s lightship that had previously protected ships from running aground at Nab’s Rock. When the base was filled with water and it was sunk, it started to list and still rests at an angle to this day. During the Second World War two bofors guns were mounted on the tower, and it finally took a wartime role, shooting down enemy planes. At first Nab’s Tower was a manned lighthouse with a crew of four, but now unmanned it is still used as a weather station and lighthouse, with its top now converted to be a helicopterlanding pad. In 1999 the tower was damaged after a ship collided with it but it has subsequently been repaired. The pubic were for a time allowed to board the second complete tower in Shoreham Harbour, for a fee that went to the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Too large to pass through the harbour mouth and move on to a new home, this tower was eventually demolished between 1923 and 24. Debris from the tower was used improve the seawall at the South East of the harbour. Judy Upton

ouThWicK oPerA iS pleased to announce its next production DIE FLEDERMAUS by the “Waltz King” Johann Strauss which will be performed at the Barn Theatre, Southwick from 17th – 21st May. Composed non-stop in forty-two “nights of veritable rapture” this is the younger

Strauss’ most celebrated and popular operetta – intoxicatingly melodious and exuberant. The story tells of Falke, whose revenge on his friend Eisenstein for leaving him after a party to wake up hungover, still in fancy dress and in full public view, is to ensnare him in an elaborate trap. He arranges for
Eisenstein to attend a party at the home of the Russian aristocrat, Prince Orlofsky, and looks on as he attempts to seduce a mysterious Hungarian Countess, who is in fact his wife, Rosalinda, in disguise! Director and conductor SIMON GRAY has assembled a talented and experienced
cast of singers in the principal roles including soprano HELEN HARDWICK as Rosalinda. Helen last appeared with Southwick Opera in the title role of Puccini’s Suor Angelica. As her husband Eisenstein is tenor MIKE MACKENZIE. A very experienced performer in both opera and musical theatre this is the first time Mike has sung with the company. CHARLOTTE FANE plays the role of Adele, the Eisenstein’s over-familiar maid, MATT CLARK plays the role Falke, HILARY ANDREWS plays the “trouser-role” of Prince Orlofsky, WILLIAM REVELS is the prison governor Colonel Frank, MARTIN CLARKE is the lawyer Doctor Blind, LISA ABBOTT is Ida, Adele’s sister, and ALAN SOUTTER is the intoxicated jailer Frosch. Returning to the company after his wonderful performance as Canio in Pagliacci is professional actor/singer MARK LANAHAN as the opera singer Alfred. With the full Southwick Opera Chorus and a small orchestra this production promises to be indeed “a feast of frivolity, frocks and infectious fun”.
