Feeling Good at Feel Good Factor f

eelinG reallY Good inside? These days it seems almost a distant memory! Shoreham`s newest Health & Beauty Centre Feel Good Factor was opened last month. Owner Yvette Jordan has been working around the local area for the last four years and her loyal following of clients welcome her new venture. Yvette`s proven approach has an extremely effective, new way forward for our Health, Weight, Diet, Inch-Loss, Exercise and Beauty. It stems from her 27 years experience and the fact she is a Lymphoedema Therapist. She said “When I started Outside In Detox four years ago the health benefits that women were experiencing were truly amazing. I needed to know

more medically what was happening to give all these amazing results. On my course as a Lymphoedema Therapist I learnt obesity is one of the causes of Lymphoedema, but this devastating condition actually happens very, very, very slowly. “You can diagnose early warning signs and visibly see the symptoms happening up to 5-10 years beforehand, and you can actually see these early stages in many overweight women, walking around. What is very sad, is they do not have any idea what is happening to them. And it`s all down to the lymphatic system becoming extremely sluggish and stagnant and basically being ignored, purely because we don`t understand how it works.”

DECEMBER 2010

Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment A Very Merry Christmas to all our readers and local businesses. This year has been eventful to say the least; we have had our general election and of course from that our first coalition government in many years, the financial crisis deepened and individually we have all had our own ups and downs that life has thrown at us. We hope that, on reflection, it has been a good one for you and that 2011 is even better. In this month issue we have some great festive articles that I hope you will enjoy reading. Our regular articles this month are very pertinent at this time of the year; especially if we are to have a cheerful Christmas. Our PCSO’s really want everyone to enjoy this time of year and we have details of their Drink Driving Campaign which we

can all participate in to ensure it is a as safe as possible for all. Christmas would not be Christmas without great food. Our magazine would be bereft without festive read of Judy Upton’s Christmas in Shoreham and Southwick in Festive Times and Mark from Any Garden has tips for our garden at this time of year. At this time of year many of us will be with our families and friends. I hope that where ever you are, that you will not be alone and that your celebrations are filled with joy and happiness. On that note, warm seasonal greetings to you all from the Inside Shoreham Team. Angela

Winter Beach Clean

T

he winter Beach Clean has become something of a seasonal tradition. It’s a good opportunity to burn off some of those Christmas calories and enjoy the festive fresh air while doing your bit for the community – as well as the marine life that is put at risk from the discarded rubbish littering the seashore. Meet at the Ferry Road beach entrance at 10.45 am, litterpick until 12.30 before relaxing over a glass of mulled wine and mince pies.

For more information call Joy Daintree on 01273 462584 or log on to www.fosbeach.com.

Pub pushes past £10k A

recent collection for the RNLI took a local pubs charity fundraising efforts past the £10,000 mark. The Romans Pub in Southwick has achieved this in under five years. Landlord Chris Pobjoy said, "It amazes me that even now when times are tough for most of us my regulars still manage to dig deep for good causes." The £10,000 figure has been distributed to charities such as Clic Sargent, RNLI, M.S Centre, Breast Cancer and others. Many more events are planned such as a ladies night in March plus another sports-related event in May. Watch out for details.

Chris also says any organisation, group or individual needing help to raise funds should contact him for support and advice by calling him on 01273 592147.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice

Flexible mortgages to suit your lifestyle m

oST PeoPle find it stressful and time consuming to arrange a mortgage to buy a property in the first place, never mind having to review the mortgage in a couple of years time. Although a mortgage review is often much simpler than arranging your initial mortgage, some people would rather find a rate where they can happily stay for the whole duration of the mortgage term. To help these people, some major lenders offer “lifetime tracker rates”. These rates are variable, and are set at a certain percentage difference to the Bank of England base rate. As an example, the Bank Base rate is currently 0.5%, your rate may be set at 3% above this. Therefore your initial rate would be 3.5%. The rate would alter each time the Bank of England change their base rate, but you would always be 3% above for the whole term of the mortgage. Not only are the rates competitive, but the mortgages tend to be flexible to adapt to your changing lifestyle during the mortgage term. For example, many have no early repayment charges (or penalties), this allows you to overpay on your mortgage, meaning that you can repay your mortgage early. Most also offer the facility to withdraw the overpayment at a later time, or to take payment holidays. Others even have offset accounts linked to them. An offset account is an investment account linked to your mortgage. It is a place where you can stash your savings and rather than earning interest, the lender offsets interest charged to your mortgage. This means that rather than earning interest on your money, you are saving interest at the same rate you are paying on your mortgage. This is very tax efficient for higher rate taxpayers, as it saves you paying 40% tax on the interest you would otherwise be earning from your savings account. Also, the ability to withdraw the money from the offset account at the time of your choice means that you can save interest, but still retain complete flexibility. Some people use these accounts save for tax bills. Others wish to do home improvements to their properties, and need to borrow the money on the initial mortgage. However, many do not want to spend the money immediately, but use it gradually. An offset account is ideal for this, as you can borrow the amount of money you will eventually require, then pay back the home improvement money into the offset account, taking withdrawals as and when you need them. This means that you are not paying interest on money until the actual time you need to spend it! One major lender is also offering a free valuation on 6

their lifetime tracker mortgage, this can also save you a large fee when you first purchase your property. Every person’s needs are different, so these types of mortgages only suit some people. However, for the right person, these mortgages can not only make life easier, but can save a substantial amount of money over the mortgage term.

To find out what type of mortgage will suit you, to discuss remortgaging your current property or purchasing a new one to live in, please call me, Claire Cook and my team on 01273 224667. We offer a free initial consultation and would be very happy to help. Buy to let mortgages are not regulated by the Finanicial Services Authority. Christmas Drink Driving Campaign

What can you do? Don’t listen to peer pressure: Often people will try and push you into having ‘one for the road’ or ‘a proper drink’. Remember, they’re not the ones driving, or the ones having to face the consequences should you be involved in an incident whilst over the limit. Nominate a driver: If you’re in a group, agree before any alcohol has been drunk. Give your keys to someone you can trust: It’s easy to think you’re perfectly able to drive safely when you’re not. Remove the temptation before it’s there. Take a taxi or public transport: Remove the question of driving from the equation. And remember, a taxi can cost as little as one round of drinks.

How much time before you can drive again? There is a good rule of thumb: ‘Allow 12 hours between bottle and throttle’…and this includes a good sleep. But even this isn’t an exact science. Give it longer if possible.

d

rinK driVinG, chriSTmaS is approaching, as it does so will the number of drink drivers. Thankfully, there is an ever-increasing number of drivers who have realised just how anti-social and dangerous drinking and driving is. The number of deaths and injuries as a result has dropped in the last decade. Having said that, they are still too high, and there can be no room for complacency. Even the smallest amount of alcohol can affect a driver’s skills without them realising: awareness will decrease, reactions will slow. Limits have been set as to how much a driver can drink lawfully, but everyone is different. As a result, the whole thing can turn into a lethal guessing game, and human life is worth much more than a game. The truth is, even if you are below the legal limit you can still be prosecuted if a police officer considers your driving has been affected by alcohol. The are so many variables that the best drinks limit to stick to is ‘None at all’. It just isn’t worth it.

Take the challenge for 2011 d

o YoU wanT to get fit this year, have fun as well as raising money for the Chestnut Tree Appeal? Why not start training now for The Downs Link Challenge? This annual bike ride of up to 30 miles across the stunning scenery of the Sussex Downs is a great, family friendly event. This year the ride starts at Bramber Castle at 8am on Saturday 21st May. Log onto www.downslinkchallenge .co.uk for all the details, maps and entry forms. Cycling is a great form of exercise, and most importantly it’s fun. There are lots of health benefits associated with regular cycling. Your cardiovascular fitness will improve and this means you’ll lower your risk of heart attack and stroke. On average, 350 calories an hour are burned off during leisure cycling so it’s a good way to lose weight. Pedalling is low impact, so you can improve muscle tone without stressing your knee and ankle joints. Here are our top tips for cycling Start slow – there’s no need to kill yourself when you start. Even if you’re already in good shape, cycling uses different muscles than other exercises, and your body will need time to get used to the new types of stress. Start out nice and easy, enjoy yourself, and progress gradually. Just do 2-3 miles at first, and do them nice and slow. Have fun! Be safe – always wear a helmet which fits your head correctly. Be aware of traffic and always be as visible as possible. Don’t wear headphones. You need to hear what’s going on around you. The Downs Link Challenge has the advantage of being mainly off road, cycling across the old dismantled railway line between Bramber and Christ’s Hospital.

Equipment To start with, any old bike will do. As you improve make sure your bicycle is appropriate for your height and needs. Ask staff at bike shops for help when choosing a new bicycle. Adjust your saddle for your leg length. Your knee should be only slightly bent when your foot is on the pedal with your leg fully extended. Regularly check your bike yourself to make sure it is in good repair. Check the tyres, bearings, gears, nuts and bolts, and lubricate the chain and cables. If you’re not sure how to do this, consult with staff at bicycle stores or bicycle repair shops. 10

Narrow seats may be uncomfortable, particularly for women. Opt for a wider saddle or a gel-filled saddle.

Clothing If you begin to get serious about cycling, you should consider some good clothing. Good cycling clothing is thin, so you don’t get too hot, flexible for comfort, with special material that “wicks away” sweat. It’s also tight, so the wind doesn’t flap your clothing all around and the bright colors serve a purpose as well: they make you visible. Wear layers so that you can put on extra clothing or remove it as the weather changes. Cycling shorts reduce the risk of skin irritation because the material doesn’t bunch and rub against your skin. Sun glasses are useful as they block insects and other debris from hitting you in the eyes.

What to carry Money and mobile phone for emergencies. Water bottle, – get one with a cage that attaches to your bike. A portable pump that you attach to the bike is necessary, in case you get a flat or a slow leak. You don’t want to be walking your bike back home. A Repair kit – a simple repair kit would include a patch kit, a spare inner tube, two tyre levers, a multi-tool for bikes, all in a small bag that attaches to the bike.

Riding tactics Switch to lower gears whenever you can as pedalling in high gear for a long time will stress your knee joints. Maintain the same cycling rhythm when going uphill by changing gears. Altering your riding position from time to time reduces the risk of muscle overuse, stiffness and soreness. Once you’ve crested the hill, avoid the temptation to coast down the other side. Pedal a little bit to reduce the risk of lactic acid build-up in your leg muscles. Avoid using your brakes continuously when riding down a long hill, because you may overheat your brakes and consequently your tyres. Hot tyres are more likely to burst. Instead, apply the brakes gently and intermittently. Flat tyres happen to everyone. Know how to fix them, and be sure to have a pump and a spare inner tube. It’s really not that hard. And finally, enjoy your cycling. Get on your bike and see us at The Downs Link Challenge on 21st May 2011. To advertise call: 01273 452065

A local Tudor Christmas

c

hriSTmaS in Shoreham and Southwick in Tudor times was still the greatest celebration of the year, and many of its elements are still recognisable in today’s festivities. Of course both towns were much smaller and nearly everyone earned a living from the surrounding farms or the sea. At this time Christmas was a much longer festival with the full twelve days being celebrated. In fact the carol ‘The Twelve Days Of Christmas’ dates from the 1500s. Under Henry V111, Catholics could not legally practice their faith and it is thought that the gifts in this song may be hidden Catholic teachings. In 1521 Wynken de Worde published a collection of carols that is the earliest known today. Our Tudor ancestors would have known ‘The Holly and the Ivy’ and ‘While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks’, but they also had other carols such as the ‘Boar’s Head Carol’. The boar’s head was an integral part of Christmas in the 1500s. Pork had been thought the finest of meats from Celtic times and had been the main meat of the pre-Christian Great Yule Feast of December 21-22nd. The Normans praised the oak forests of Sussex for providing forage for their huge black and white pigs. By the Tudor Age, the gentry would have a roasted boar’s head for their Christmas dinner. Turkey was introduced to Britain around 1525 and soon became a popular part of the Christmas feast. It was often served stuffed with a

12

succession of smaller birds from goose to pigeon, inside a pastry case. To wash down this rich fare, our Sussex Tudors would have sipped from the Wassail bowl, a wooden vessel holding a gallon of hot punch containing ale, sugar, apples and spices. During the twelve days of festivities, people would have shared minced pies with their neighbours. The traditional ‘minced pye’ had thirteen ingredients to represent Christ and his apostles. As well as dried fruits and spices, a little chopped mutton – the mince was included in remembrance of the shepherds of the nativity. With all that rich fare on offer, it’s not surprising that a fast would have been observed on Christmas Eve, when no cheese, eggs or meat could be eaten. All twelve days of Christmas were a holiday in Tudor times and all work came to a halt, apart from the care of animals. In rural parishes such as ours though a large proportion of the population would be livestock hands, dairymaids and shepherds, and for them it was work as normal. Women who worked as spinners were luckier, as tradition decreed they stopped their wheels and garlanded them in flowers. The holiday ended on the first Monday after Twelfth Night, which was known as Plough Monday Henry V111 banned all sports on Christmas Day except jousting and archery, so for ordinary people this was not a time for outdoor pursuits.

Entertainment however thrived during the festive season. A choirboy would be elected as a ‘boy bishop’ who would preach a sermon, which often mocked the church and king. A Lord Of Misrule would also be elected to be in charge of rowdy entertainments involving copious amounts of drinking Mummer and Mystery Plays would have been performed at Christmas. The Mysteries told stories from the bible, while the Mummers or Tipteerers went from door to door performing a traditional tale involving St. George, a Turkish Knight, a comic doctor and Father Christmas. Father Christmas dressed in the ordinary clothes of the day, but already had his long white beard. At end of the play the actors, all Shoreham or Southwick locals would sing a carol and be offered food and drink by the people whose homes they had visited. In Tudor times a Yule Log was burnt at Christmas, a tradition that had been brought to Britain by the Vikings. On Christmas Eve the log would be chosen and decked in ribbons before being brought from the woods to be burned on the hearth. It was kept alight through the twelve days, and a few of its charred remains would be kept to kindle next year’s log. Our Tudor ancestors were less likely to have had a Christmas Tree, though the fir was seen as God’s tree as it’s triangular shape was seen to represent the Holy Trinity. Elsewhere in Europe it was being hung upside down from ceilings at Christmas, but decorating the tree only began in Latvia in 1510. Our local Tudors would have definitely had a kissing bough though. A hoop made of a bendy wood such as hazel with figures of the Holy Family hung inside it; it was displayed over the threshold of the home. Visitors showed they brought only goodwill by embracing the occupiers beneath the kissing bough. As the bough often contained mistletoe, this evergreen plant eventually replaced it as a tradition. In Tudor Shoreham and Southwick, the present exchange took place on New Year’s Day rather than Christmas. As well as gifts, people gave poems or epigrams of one or two verses, which were often satirical or sarcastic about their recipient, rather like our cheeky birthday card ranges. Lifting the winter garden gloom i

T onlY SeemS a short while ago I was writing about the New Year and all it would bring and here we are with Christmas fast approaching. It’s been a very strange year in the garden and to be honest it’s taken a real pounding, what with the really cold weather in the beginning of the year and the long hot and very dry summer. So if it’s all survived in your garden, then you must be doing something right! We are well into the deep middle of winter with the really dark short days upon us. A period spent in the garden on a dry sunny day can really lift the winter gloom, so its always worth getting out there. It’s a good time to get any pruning finished and make sure you clear away any dead plants or leaves. You’ll be amazed at how many slugs they can give a home to, not to mention harbouring diseases that can cause problems next year. If some parts of the garden need a change, now is a very good time to transplant shrubs that you want in a different place. Make sure you get the new hole dug and prepared with extra compost first. The shorter you leave a shrub out of the ground, the better its chance at survival in its new home. If you’re storing any bulbs or any crops then make sure you regularly check them for any signs of rot. Make sure you get rid of any that are affected as soon as possible. The old adage about one bad apple is very true and applies across the board to any stored bulb, fruit

20

or vegetable. If you have any greens such as cabbages or sprouts growing, then to avoid disappointment for the Christmas table, get them covered with a net. They are a very attractive meal for our feathered friends. Any work you do on improving the soil now will be returned next year with improved crops. Digging the ground now also helps the frost to get in and break up the soil and kill off diseases. You can get next years crops under way as well, by planting out garlic and onions. It always gives me a good feeling to be looking ahead to next year. If you have a pond in the garden then its worth giving that some attention now. Cut back any plants around the ponds that need attention, and try to avoid too much debris falling in the pond when you do it. The fish and other wildlife should be heading to the bottom by now to avoid the colder temperatures, so avoid disturbing them. It is well worth leaving a tennis ball or tow in the pond. This helps when the pond ices up, by preventing the oxygen supply falling, and also helps to protect the liner from splitting. Now is a really good time of year, now that you have cleared the garden, to have a good look back at what worked and what didn’t. If you are considering big or small changes then try to take the time to plan them out carefully. It gives you an excuse to stay in the warm as well. If the job is too big or ambitious then it is always worth

calling in a professional. We always find now is a good time of year as we can get a really good view of the garden, and its also a good time to beat the spring rush. Mark Oakley, Any Garden

Feel Good Factor is completely unique because it concentrates on lymphatic health and fluid retentive problems associated with weight gain. You can do private or small exercise classes and get on the road to fitness, reduce, tone and tighten up targeting specific areas you need i.e. waist and thighs. Just breathing pumps lymphatics without running. FGF has a full range of therapies addressing the issue of being overweight and health related problems. All Yvette`s therapists including Karolina, personal exercise instructor are aware of the importance of lymphatic health in the fight against weight, fluid retention, disease and health they are there to help assist

you reach your target goal and size. Also a centre for beauty, Yvette specializes in anti-ageing treatments because prevention is always a better option than a cure. Beauty treatments are always part of feeling good whether it be an eyebrow shape, eyelash tint or facial. If you are feeling good on the inside you start to take care of the outside appearance. Visit fgf.uk.com for more information about all our treatments and therapies.

Feel Good Factor — Your Health How fed up are we to keep hearing diet and exercise to feel healthier! Yes! Absolutely you must eat a balanced diet — all in moderation, take exercise to keep the blood pumping around your body — vitally important! But sometimes you can feel tired, lethargic, unwell, swollen and you just don`t know why? You usually put it down to weight if you are overweight. If you`re not, it`s time of the month or stress, pet problems, 23
