Feeling Good at Feel Good Factor F
eeLInG reaLLY GooD inside? These days it seems almost a distant memory! Shoreham`s newest Health & Beauty Centre Feel Good Factor was opened last month. Owner Yvette Jordan has been working around the local area for the last four years and her loyal following of clients welcome her new venture. Yvette`s proven approach has an extremely effective, new way forward for our Health, Weight, Diet, Inch-Loss, Exercise and Beauty. It stems from her 27 years experience and the fact she is a Lymphoedema Therapist. She said “When I started Outside In Detox four years ago the health benefits that women were experiencing were truly amazing. I needed to know
more medically what was happening to give all these amazing results. On my course as a Lymphoedema Therapist I learnt obesity is one of the causes of Lymphoedema, but this devastating condition actually happens very, very, very slowly. “You can diagnose early warning signs and visibly see the symptoms happening up to 5-10 years beforehand, and you can actually see these early stages in many overweight women, walking around. What is very sad, is they do not have any idea what is happening to them. And it`s all down to the lymphatic system becoming extremely sluggish and stagnant and basically being ignored, purely because we don`t understand how it works.”

FEBRUARY 2011
Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello Welcome to the February edition of Inside Shoreham & Southwick. Hopefully the worst of the wintery weather is behind us now (I hope I’m not speaking too soon here) and spring is just around the corner. I have seen daffodils and snowdrops starting to shoot and the days are starting to get that little bit lighter with the longest day behind us. With that very thought in mind, this month, we have the latest garden tips from Mark on putting that spring step in your garden for the rest of the year, some great tips to make gardening that much more pleasurable from reducing maintenance to planting. We also have the latest news about the first phase of a programme to design and build a replacement Shoreham footbridge has commenced. You can read the latest on our centre pages. On March 8th it will be the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day. If you would like to participate you can find more
information on how to on page 4. We also have the fantastic fund raising results by Headmaster Jim Stearns of Shoreham College for the Chestnut Tree House and if you would like to raise money for this worthy charity you can join in the Downlinks Challenge, see page 8 for the details. Finally, we have Judy Upton’s article on the John Pell of Southwick, a seventeenth Century Mathematician. It is a really informative read. On that note, I wish you a fabulous month and we will see you in March. Please do write, email us about any local events or activities or charity events you may be running or would like to promote locally. We would be happy to put it in the magazine. The deadline for the March edition is the 12th Feb. Until then, Angela

n 8 March, women, children and men from all over Sussex are set to make history by joining together on the Norfolk Bridge, Shoreham by Sea, to mark the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day. They will be calling for an end to violence against women in war-torn countries across the world, including Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, two of the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman. Last year over 20,000 people, including Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kosovo, Canada, Mexico and Belgium, took part in the first ever global ‘Join Me’ on the Bridge campaign www.womenforwomen.org/bridge. In 2011, hundreds more events, with thousands more people, are being planned. The global campaign is being organised by Women for Women International www.womenforwomen.org , a charity that helps women in areas of conflict to rebuild their lives, with a coalition that includes Amnesty International, the Fawcett Society, Oxfam and Women’s Aid, CARE, Global Changemakers at the British Council, U8, Save the Children, the White Ribbon Alliance and the Women’s Institute. The concept is simple; women, men and children whether it’s 3, 300, 3000 or more can join together on a bridge near them and hold up banners asking for an end to violence against women in war-torn countries and for them to have better representation at the peace table. Here’s a link to coverage of last year’s global event: http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_MeGKKAWs8 Please join Ariana Gee, the Local organiser, at the Norfolk Bridge, Shoreham on the evening of Tuesday 8 March. The event will convene at 6pm at Ropetackle Arts Centre where They will show a short film before going onto the bridge. Afterwards, if you have time, hope you will join them back at Ropetackle, as the bar will be open for you. To help Ariana have an idea of the numbers attending please take a second to visit this link: http://www.eventbrite. com/event/1126223565/rss to register your interest. They will keep you updated. If you would like to lend a hand then please contact Ariana via: www.eventbrite.com/contactorganizer?eid=1126223565 Feel free to come with any friends who would like to support this event. And please pass this invitation on to any individual or organisation you think might be interested in joining them. They aim to raise the awareness of the plight of these women and the fantastic work carried out by Women for Women International and Ariana hopes to see as many of you there as can possibly make it. 4
Since launching at the Kingston Buci Children and Family Centre in Shoreham-by-Sea in September 2010, Jo has endeavoured to incorporate elements of her previous career as an Event Manager in to her new business venture and reports ‘overwhelming feedback’ from the UKs newest bikers. The concept of bringing Toddlers and Families together through shared activities, is something very close to Jo’s heart as she explains: ‘The social changes that having a family brings are massive and can be alienating for some new parents. By incorporating an events programme where families can meet up through shared interest and with similar aged Children, we hope to offer something not only for the Toddler, but also to the family who can meet new people in a social setting. We are delighted to now be working with key Sussex attractions such as Fishers Farm Park, Westows and Blackberry Farm, in addition to our stand alone events and ongoing relationship with the Children and Family Centre Network and hope to build on these relationships in the coming year.’ Currently Events and Activities, Stockists and Event Partners are focused solely on Sussex, but Jo is hoping to roll out across the UK in the coming months.

Preventing Crime W
Ith chrIStmaS noW a distant memory and the New Year has been seen in ,often the security of our homes & vehicles gets forgotten. It is very easy to become a victim but with some simple steps to prevent this the risks are greatly reduced. There are many types of incidents that occur but burglary to dwellings and other buildings like sheds and garages. Breaks-ins to vehicles are the main type. Secure your property & valuables; Mark & identify property; Keep a record of valuables; and keep items out of sight.
Op Castle During the month of December, the Neighbourhood Policing Team patrolled main shopping areas delivering Crime Prevention advice. You may have seen them whilst shopping at the Holmbush Centre. Areas in Shoreham, Southwick and Lancing were also patrolled looking specifically for vehicles insecurities. Owners of vehicles were made aware & crime prevention advice given. This is a positive ongoing initiative. Across the District there has been an increase in car key burglaries. This is where properties are targeted for their high value vehicles ,broken into & car keys stolen along with the vehicle. Unfortunately many households make a thief’s job very easy by labelling vehicle keys, leaving them in key presses near front doors or in handbags or wallets on show in an open location like a coffee table or a hall table. By using one of the simple steps above (keeping items out of sight) the risks will be reduced. For further Crime prevention advice you can contact your local Neighbourhood Policing team at Shoreham Police Station or Lancing Police Station, by visiting Sussex Police Website at http://www.sussex.police.uk/yourneighbourhood Below are dates where you will be able to speak with your local Police Community Support Officer. Have a safe & happy 2011.

Headmaster heading to raise £40,000 for charity W e speak to Jim Stearns, headmaster of Shoreham College in St Julian’s Lane, Shoreham. Shoreham College has already raised an amazing £30,000 for Chestnut Tree House and the College is now working hard to reach the target of £40,000. With this in mind Mr Stearns will shamelessly plug The Downslink Challenge on Saturday21st May 2011.
What makes Shoreham College so special? The college provides a supportive and challenging environment for girls and boys from 3 to 16 years old. Classes are under 20 in size and once here, the first public exam is GCSE, so children enjoy their earlier education without the constant pressure of external exams. Nonetheless children of all abilities perform well at GCSE but also leave with the confidence to tackle whatever path they take post 16 years. What is The Downs Link Challenge? This is a cycle ride across the stunning scenery of the Sussex Downs Link. There are various distances between 10 miles and a very challenging 30 miles to attempt. The ride is mainly off road so is ideal for families. The Downs Link is a dismantled railway line which provides a green corridor linking the North Downs Way at St Martha’s Hill in Surrey with the South Downs near Steyning and then via the coastal link to Shoreham by Sea. The countryside is spectacular with plenty of wild life to be seen.
8
Tell us about Chestnut Tree House. Chestnut Tree House is the only hospice for children in Sussex. It cares for children up to the age of 19 years who have life limiting conditions. Not only does the care cover the child, siblings and parents are also supported. Chestnut Tree House is absolutely vital to the Sussex area. Only a very small percentage of their running costs come from statutory sources so fund raising is important to maintain this service for children. What cycle distance do you recommend? I have cycled 30 miles for the past few years but it does not get any easier! However, there is plenty of support on route. Drinks and snacks are available at the check points. The route is well signed so no-one will get lost. What do you like best about living in Sussex? Having lived in various parts of the country, it is fantastic to be by the sea, but also have ready access to the downs and there are lots of things for young families like ours to do in the area. How do you keep fit? Honestly, preparing for the Downs Link Challenge two years ago got me back on my bike and I still manage 10-20 miles per week. With this in mind I would urge you to enter The Downs Link Challenge. Log onto the web site on www.downslinkchallenge.co.uk and make a difference.

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice
Pensions and Investments… Are yours working for you? W
hen aDVISInG on pension funds and investments things are becoming much more pro-active. Many people set up their pension with good intention, but that shouldn’t be the end of it. Whether you are still paying into your pension or not, it is still a lump sum of money which could be in a plan which is out of date, highly charged, or just not performing as it should be. Previously a plan would be arranged and your adviser would be under no obligation to make reviews. A once yearly review of your investments can have a huge impact on the final result, so why not arrange your affairs so that they are reviewed and constantly looked after. This is the system we now have set up at Talk Money. After comparing your current plan with the new plans on the market, checking charges and performance, we will advise you if it is best to change provider. During this process we would assess your attitude to taking investment risk. You may be a cautious person, or you could be happy with taking a higher risk. Your new plan would be set up accordingly. All of your financial products are then input onto our interactive client system, Enable. Values from most financial companies are updated on an ongoing basis, normally monthly. You would have online access to your client file so that you can keep track of the value of your funds. This shows all of your financial products in once place and makes your finances much easier to manage and understand. Reviewing your portfolio on an ongoing basis is the next step. Although we are happy to choose your funds, the analysis of the investments is normally outsourced as it takes a huge amount of resource and specialism. We employ research companies and discretionary managers to help us analyse Global Investment Markets and create structured and independent investment portfolios for your pension and investment funds. They research the most consistently well performing managers for these individual fund areas. For example, some of your fund may be invested in America. Our fund would include what we believe to be the most consistently performing American fund and include that within your investment. You could end up 19-20 fund managers, all experts in their particular field managing your pension fund. These managers are monitored for their performance and changed if necessary, all automatically on your behalf. We then rebalance – this involves making sure that if you started with 20% in a UK Fund, this remains at 20%. Different funds will grow at different rates, and this 10
means that you could end up with a more cautious or risky investment than you anticipated. With your permissions we rebalance the funds every six months to ensure this doesn’t happen. So, if your risk level is balanced, it will remain so for as long as you are invested.
We have the systems, expertise and permissions to monitor and rebalance your funds on an ongoing basis, ensuring your plan is constantly looked after. If you would like to discuss our proposition, or if you would like a financial review, please call me, Claire Cook on 01273 224667. John Pell of Southwick J
ohn peLL, the eminent seventeenth century mathematician and diplomat was born at the Old Rectory Cottage in Kingston Lane on 1st March 1611. The cottage stands to this day and has the last remaining thatched roof in Southwick John Pell's father, also named John Pell, was also from Southwick, while his mother Mary Holland was born in Kent. The elder John Pell died in 1616, and tragically his wife only survived him by a year, leaving John Pell the younger as an orphan at the tender age of six. His father did however leave a fine library of books which his son read avidly as he grew up. John Pell attended a free school in Steyning and then in 1624, he entered Trinity College, Cambridge. There he received his B.A. in 1628 and his M.A. in 1630. Pell was described by a writer of the time as “a striking figure, remarkably handsome, with strong, excellent posture, dark hair and eyes, and a good voice. His temperament was sanguine and melancholic.” Elsewhere he is described as “a strange, appealing, but awkward character, whose failure to publish all of his discoveries was caused by powerful scruples.” Pell left Cambridge an expert in Greek and Latin. He was also at this time corresponding about subjects such as logarithms with mathematicians of the day. Pell then became a schoolmaster, first at Collyer’s School in Horsham, then at Chichester Academy. On the 3rd July 1632 he married the exotically named Ithumaria Reginolles with whom he went on to have eight children. From 1638, Pell taught mathematics in London, and in 1643 he moved to Holland and became Professor of maths at universities in Amsterdam and Breda. Here Pell continued to work on algebra and number theory. Most famously he is credited with inventing the division sign we use today. He published a number of books including, in 1639 ‘Idea of Mathematics’. Until the 1650s Pell’s career looked as though it was going to remain a purely academic one. Then however everything 12
changed. England passed the Navigation Act in an attempt to prevent the Dutch taking part in the English sea trade. Tensions between England and Holland escalated and war was on the horizon. Pell left Holland for England before the hostilities began in 1652, and was given a London teaching post by Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell however soon expected his favour returned and in 1654 Pell took a diplomatic posting to Zurich, Switzerland. Cromwell was trying to build an alliance with Protestant Switzerland, to strengthen England’s position against Catholic France and Spain. Pell’s delicate negotiations took so long that Oliver Cromwell had in fact died before he could return to deliver his progress report. Back in England Pell was ordained as a deacon, and then became a priest in 1661. For the next twenty years of his
life he became the vicar of two parishes in Essex. Also in 1661 his wife Ithumaria died. Pell was elected to the Royal Society on the 20th May 1663. There he served on the committee considering mechanical and optical inventions and was then elected vice-president in 1675. Before this in 1664 however the plague in London had driven Pell to relocate to Cheshire. Some time before 1669 he also remarried. Despite his formerly successful life, in his final years John Pell was heavily in debt and spent time in prison because of it. When he died on the 12th December 1685 he was living in modest rented lodgings in Westminster. Although John Pell had by his death written a large number of academic manuscripts, he remained until very recently a neglected figure, whose work had never been properly explored. A spring step in your garden W
e’Ve haD SnoW, we’ve had rain, now let’s hope we’ve got some sunshine to come our way, as this winter has been torturous so far, but at least you can start to see the signs of new life everywhere in the garden. There are already new signs of life in the garden, so Spring is definitely in the air! We always find at this time of year people contact us wanting to put ideas into practice in the garden, ready for the coming warmer months. One of the biggest things we get asked is to reduce the maintenance in the garden. This can be for a number of reasons. Sometimes people struggle to keep the garden under control due to age or ill health, sometimes its due to lack of time, knowledge or just effort. Whatever the reasons the garden should be an outside space you can utilise and get as much enjoyment from it as possible. I thought it would be a good idea to look at some ideas to help cut down on the maintenance, since now is a good time of year to implement them. Many of these ideas are just at home in the allotment as in the back garden. One of the hardest jobs in the garden is watering. Without it many plants will suffer and in many cases we struggle to keep up with it. The first thing you can do is use generous layers of mulch on the beds. This can simply be bark chippings, or more ornamental options such as decorative stone chippings. This helps to keep the moisture in the ground, as well as having the advantage of keeping the weeds at bay. Look at how you do your watering as well. If you have to walk the length of the garden with a watering can then it may be
16
worth investing in a water butt at the other end of the garden to cut down on the amount of trips you have to make. Another option is to install some irrigation equipment to do the work for you. This can range from simple soaker hoses that keep the ground moist, to full systems that work on timers with items such as sprinklers and drippers. It is surprising how inexpensive irrigation is to install, especially compared to the long term effort of all the watering. Its well worth looking at the type of planting you have in the garden. There is a wide range of drought tolerant plants readily available now. Many are from warmer climes but they thrive in our climate as well. They have also the advantage of being easy to care for and most of them are evergreen giving colour and form in the garden all year round. They fit in well with more traditional planting. A lot of people favour pots and containers to grow plants in, but these require a lot of watering, so if possible plant them directly into the ground. If not then there are products such as water retaining gels that can be added into the compost in the pots to help cut down on the watering and don’t forget to put some mulch around the plants. For some people large or small areas of lawn can be too much of a chore, both for the work involved and for getting rid of the grass cuttings. Taking the lawn out of the garden can give it a completely different feel and it is not always to everyone’s liking, but replacing the grass with alternatives such as decorative aggregates, gravel, paved areas or even artificial grass can give a garden a new lease of life, both
in terms of looks and in making it more useable and accessible. I would always advise thinking the options through carefully and taking professional advice if it seems a bit daunting. Whatever you do in the garden, my best advice for maintaining it is do a little and often. It’s far easier to do small tasks so you don’t get overwhelmed, and above all enjoy it! Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

First steps towards new Shoreham Footbridge
t
he FIrSt phaSe of a programme to design and build a replacement Shoreham footbridge has got underway. The new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists will replace the existing ageing bridge on Shoreham High Street, which is owned by West Sussex County Council. Work has now begun on the early stages of designing the new bridge. It is expected this initial design work will last until July 2011, with a public consultation planned for May. Lionel Barnard, West Sussex County Council Deputy Leader with responsibility for Highways and Transport, said: “It’s very important to us that we make sure we take on the views and comments of the local community as they will be the ones that use the new bridge for many years to come.” The contract is worth up to £4 million and is being funded by the County Council and the UK charity, Sustrans, which enables people to make more of their everyday journeys by foot, bike and public transport. The bridge forms part of Sustrans’ Connect2 project, which was awarded £50million in 2007 by the Big Lottery Fund to
develop new walking and cycling links across the UK. As well as the local community the County Council will also be working closely with other groups and organisations including Adur District Council, the Environment Agency, RSPB, Shoreham Port Authority, Sustrans, Natural England and the Shoreham Society. The new bridge is being designed and built by familyowned construction, civil engineering and property services company Osborne. Lionel added: “One of the first activities people will notice will be the Site Investigation, which will commence later this month. The local geology includes layers of silt and gravels overlaying chalk. The Site Investigation will use boreholes to gather detailed information to determine what depth and type of foundations are required.” Following the initial design stage the focus will move to a detailed design stage. Construction is expected to start early in 2012, with the bridge being completed in spring 2013.

where joint or muscle function may be imbalanced or reduced from their optimal function. This is undertaken by the podiatrist and physiotherapist who note their findings. Based on this an appointment is then made for the personal trainer to take the those findings and put you though tests designed to stress those weak areas, observing how quickly they fatigue. A video of you running on a treadmill also occurs. The results of all this are fed back to you with the various options available to ensure you can go on to Run Fit.
Who is it for? From anyone training for the marathon who is experiencing niggles, to those who want to try it for the first time and want a bit of guidance as to which exercises they can do to try and minimise injury.
What will I come away with?
Run yourself fit F
or a GooD many of us, Christmas was a welcome break from the routine of life. For some, it was a delicate juggling act of blending the street pounding with the mammoth eating fest. Yes, we are thinking of those who have committed themselves to marathon training, preChristmas. Even now, post festivities, there are people who are weighing things in the balance pondering whether to run or not. Whenever you start, it is not until people have been a little way into their training and start to increase the mileage that inherent weaknesses, either in the muscles, joints or running style (breathing for example), or in the training routine kick in. If this is you then now, as you increase your training, is the time to give practical thought to guarding and preparing your body for more work. A lot of emphasis is frequently placed on the type of running shoe you may need or the role of orthotic inserts that you might place in shoes. These can be important factors in endeavouring to run injury free. As important, however, is addressing those physical weaknesses that may 20
be an issue, whether they are inherent muscle weakness of remnants from previous injury. In either case it is fair to ask the questions: • Can anyone promise you will be injury free? No. • Can we do anything to minimise our tendency to injury or control the niggles? Yes. It is to address these matters that the locally based RunFit screening program was developed last year.
What is RunFit? It is an all round assessment designed to establish if inherent weakness is present and, if it is, provide help in choosing various ways to resolve it. RunFit assessments are made by a local Podiatrist and Physiotherapist (who ran last years marathon in 2 hours 45 mins) working together and a local personal trainer who also trained and ran last years marathon injury free, in addition to training others to run it!
How does it work? The first step is a thorough physical assessment, noting any previous history of injury, and then observing
Once all assessments are complete we can provide: 1. information and/or instruction on the targeting of training to address those areas of muscle or ligament weakness 2. information or treatment for existing injury that is recurring and hindering your running ability 3. information or treatment for the aspects of foot and ankle problems that impact upon your running. In addition, we may simply slightly alter the inside of your trainer to introduce better stability.
How hard is the assessment? Quite gentle, actually. It is about targeting those areas we have found in people to be recurrent issues. There may be a bit of treadmill running but there will definitely be slow and deliberate exercise of specific muscle groups to see how quickly they fatigue. As we observe these we can better see and work out what is the better exercises for you with your muscle type.
How can I make an appointment? We like to keep things personal so we prefer you to ring Podia-Clinic on 01273 593344 and ask to speak with the Podiatrist, Ian, about a RunFit assessment. A full explanation of the practicalities will be given together with answering your questions, including any costs, before having to commit to anything. To advertise call: 01273 452065
