Feeling Good at Feel Good Factor f
eeling really good inside? These days it seems almost a distant memory! Shoreham`s newest Health & Beauty Centre Feel Good Factor was opened last month. Owner Yvette Jordan has been working around the local area for the last four years and her loyal following of clients welcome her new venture. Yvette`s proven approach has an extremely effective, new way forward for our Health, Weight, Diet, Inch-Loss, Exercise and Beauty. It stems from her 27 years experience and the fact she is a Lymphoedema Therapist. She said “When I started Outside In Detox four years ago the health benefits that women were experiencing were truly amazing. I needed to know
more medically what was happening to give all these amazing results. On my course as a Lymphoedema Therapist I learnt obesity is one of the causes of Lymphoedema, but this devastating condition actually happens very, very, very slowly. “You can diagnose early warning signs and visibly see the symptoms happening up to 5-10 years beforehand, and you can actually see these early stages in many overweight women, walking around. What is very sad, is they do not have any idea what is happening to them. And it`s all down to the lymphatic system becoming extremely sluggish and stagnant and basically being ignored, purely because we don`t understand how it works.”

Adur Council launches a second Pot of Gold
SHOREHAM BONFIRE SOCIETY SAY THANK YOU
T
he Shoreham Bonfire Society would like to record its grateful thanks to everyone in the community who helped to make Shoreham Bonfire a resounding success. dur Council launched their second Pot of Gold in December following the success of the first one. Once again the council want to encourage people to come up with ideas to improve their local neighbourhoods. There’s £50,000 up for grabs for the bigger projects and £20,000 for smaller ones. This is a great opportunity for people to talk to their neighbours, get the ideas flowing and put in an application to make their area a better place to live. Adur Council Leader, Neil Parkin said: “Even though times are tough for councils these days, we were determined to do the Pot of Gold again. It worked well the first time and made a difference to many people in Adur. The Pot of Gold gives people a real say in where the money goes and I think that is even more important now. So get thinking and get those applications in.” Community groups, residents associations and charities can apply for cash. These must be Adur groups, or, if a charity, for the benefit of the people of Adur. Groups must be properly constituted to be eligible. Local residents individually, or in groups, can put forward their ideas and if successful these will be carried out by the council. All bids require a written application which can be completed in hard copy or online at www.adur.gov.uk. This must be submitted to the council by 5pm on 31st January 2011. The applications will be whittled down to a shortlist in February, and in March we will hold an ‘ask the audience event,’ inviting the public and an Adur ‘factor’ panel of judges to vote for their favourite proposal. The decisions will then be confirmed by full council on 14 April. Bids for the large pot can be from £10,000 to £15,000, so if the idea is big, for example a vehicle for a charity, this is the pot to apply for. Last year’s winners included a new roof, new storefront and better communication equipment to help save lives. Bids for the smaller pot can be for under £10,000, ideal for smaller projects, for example like some of last years winners, money for to help set up a nature reserve or build some new dirt BMX ramps in a recreation ground.
Contact Sarah Garbutt, Consultation Officer, on 01903 221109 or send the Consultation Officer an e-mail and ask for an application pack. You can also download an application pack or put your ideas on www.adur.gov.uk 4
asked for contributions in advance and cheques and PayPal donations exceeded £900. They raised over £800 in their Quiz Night, Race Night and Online Auction. Over £2000 was collected in buckets on the night. This enabled them to cover our costs and look to establish the event for the future. In addition to all those in the community who provided funding, the generosity of the following local businesses helped make the event possible: EMS Security provided two support vehicles, 24 radios and five professional stewards. Efficiency Direct and Winner Plant Hire provided the two giant telescopic lighting rigs. RT Maintenance and GT Construction dug the bonfire pit, built the bonfire and made good the site afterwards. Subway supported our fundraising efforts, Monteum La Poissonnerie delivered most of the firewood and a big cheque. Adur & Worthing District Council made barriers available at a fraction of cost. Above all, Beach Hut Studio set up and ran our super website and provided invaluable marketing advice and support over the whole year. Frontier Fireworks provided the big bangs, a highly professional outfit that really put us on the map with their display. Links to all these businesses can be found on our website www.shorehambonfire.co.uk Thanks again to the community for making this great event their own. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Interest rate predictions i
T haS Been a confusing time when taking a mortgage. In November the Bank of England voted to keep the base rate at the all time low of 0.5%, so the rate is only likely to go up. The question is when will this happen? Generally economists believe the rate will rise late in the second half of 2011 but this view has been gradually changing. Throughout most of the year the rate rises were being predicted as coming later and later. The recovery seemed to be weakening and, with spending cuts ahead, it was believed that the Bank of England would have to have to print more money to stave off deflation. In these circumstances the rate would normally remain low for longer. However, when the official figures came through they showed unexpected signs of recovery. In November the Bank of England did not order further money into the economy, showing signs of confidence. So, now predictions are that rate rises may come sooner than expected.
In November the Bank of England did not order further money into the economy, showing signs of confidence. So, now predictions are that rate rises may come sooner than expected. One thing is certain; it is a confusing time if you are taking a new mortgage. How do you choose your rate? For most situations you will find that the variable tracker rates (linked to Bank of England base rate) are lower than the fixed rates currently on offer. This makes them very attractive and many people are tempted by the lower rates, even though they are likely to go up. If you think that rates will remain low over the next couple of years, then you could find that you will be much better off with one of the lower variable rates. Some people prefer to know exactly what they are paying and are willing to take a higher initial rate for the stability a fixed rate can bring. This can work especially well if you are on a tight budget, or if you are cautious in nature and prefer to plan ahead. There is some comfort in knowing exactly what your outgoings will be for a set period of time. If you are putting down a large deposit you could find that you have a much wider choice of rates. If you have a lower percentage deposit you will find that you have less choice. Whatever your situation, it is always best to find the most competitive fixed rate, and compare this directly to the best variable (tracker) rate. This way you can make an informed 6
choice and work out exactly how much the rate would need to rise to make you worse off. An experienced independent adviser will be able to locate the best rates for you and go through the figures, making sure you have exactly the right rate for you.
If you are looking for a mortgage, to find the best rate and lender for your circumstances it is essential to take independent advice. Your Neighbourhood Watch n
eighBourhood WaTCh giVeS people the confidence to get together to say no to crime. We are not having it down our street! We don’t want it here! In Sussex, Neighbourhood Watch has the following main objectives: To prevent crime - By improving security, increasing vigilance, creating, and maintaining a caring community, and reducing opportunities for crime by increasing crime prevention awareness. To assist the Police in detecting crime - By promoting effective communication and the prompt reporting of suspicious and criminal activity. To reduce the fear of crime - By providing accurate information about risks, and by promoting a sense of security and community spirit, particularly amongst the more vulnerable. To improve police/community liaison - By providing effective means to notify Co-ordinators of local crime trends, and by members advising the police of incidents when they occur. To increase community safety - By providing safety information from other Partnership bodies such as Trading Standards and the Fire & Rescue Service. The most important thing you should do is become a member of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme. It is so simple to do. Either visit your local police station or enter your postcode in the ‘Contact your local officer’ section on the home page of the Sussex Police website to find contact details of your PCSO. (Please find direct links opposite). Get the interest of some of your neighbours, and you will be told how simple it is to start a scheme. Neighbourhood Watch really works. Some Insurance Companies offer reductions in premiums for: Additional window locks; Alarms; Members of Neighbourhood Watch.
BEAT THE BURGLAR HOME SECURITY GUIDE Any home is a potential target for burglars; some are more appealing than others and some offer themselves up with a bow that begs to be opened. If your home falls into the latter category then you need to improve your security measures fast to help you beat the burglar and keep your valuable possessions safe from harm/loss. Home insurance premiums rise every year due to increasing insurance tax and ever climbing claims levels due to crime/burglary; making home insurance comparison more important than ever. Ensuring you follow the following top 10 tips will help to secure your property as well as brining your insurance premium down. 1: Windows; most burglars will want to enter your property from the rear and it is most likely that they will look to force a window to gain entry. Breaking a window will
8
usually be a last resort as this will attract unwanted attention so you should turn your attention to visibly securing them with key operated locks. 2: Lighting; burglars don’t like to be in the spotlight so you should ensure you have outdoor lights fitted that operate on a sensor switch (to save electricity) which activates when movement is detected. Using timer switches can be a good deterrent for an opportunist thief if you are away for a few days. 3: Burglar Alarms; many homes still do not have a burglar alarm and this should be a basic security measure on all homes. The siren box will act as a visual deterrent to some extent (dummy sirens can also be bought cheaply) and you can choose a system that simply let’s off an alarm or one that dials a preset number or a local security company. 4: Doors; It is imperative that you ensure your external doors are strong, in good condition and secured to a high standard. Fitting a 5 lever mortice deadlock or extra sliding bolts will greatly improve security and French doors - which are much weaker than singular doors - should be fitted with top and bottom mortice locks on both doors. 5: Gates & Fences; a weak or low fence can make gaining access to the rear of your property much easier. Sturdy 6ft fences make the task a little harder and thorny hedges such as Hawthorne make a good deterrent. Gates should also be similarly sturdy and locked from the inside with a bolt that is out of reach as a minimum standard. 6: Spare Key; Never hide a spare key in convenient location, it will be just as convenient for the average burglar too and will hand the house to them on a silver platter. 7: Don’t Leave Valuables in Sight; Fitting blinds or net curtains will make it harder to see into your property. You might be proud of your 40” LCD TV but do you want to advertise it to an opportunist thief? 8: Buy a Safe; if you have particularly valuable items such as jewellery or large sums of cash in the house then it is a good idea to purchase a safe which can be secured in place in a hidden location. Passports, unused credit cards, etc should also ideally be locked away. 9: Mark Your Property; so that if you are burgled your possessions can be identified should the police recover them. This can be achieved by etching your postcode, surname and house number/name onto the item, or, where this is not practical, using an ultraviolet marker. 10: Don’t Advertise Your Absence; many people now use social networking websites such as Facebook.com to tell everyone about their daily exploits. Don’t unwittingly give details of when you’re going on holiday by mentioning dates, etc. For more information visit: www.sussex.police.uk/yourneighbourhood/neighbourhood-watch

Aiden going for another challenge f
ourTeen year old Aidan Anderson from Shoreham thrives on adventure. Back in August he cycled from John O'Groats to Lands End in the notorious End to End Challenge. This consisted of 13 days of cycling over some huge hills and covering an impressive 891 miles! He enjoyed the cycling and spending time with his dad but was relieved when it was all over! They stopped off at guest houses along the way depending on how far they had managed to cover each day. Aidan said “The worst parts were cycling into strong headwinds in heavy rain especially if we were going uphill!” And; as if that was not enough he has decided to take part again in The Downs Link Challenge on 21st May 2011. Aidan visited Chestnut Tree House with his school, Shoreham
10
College, to present a donation cheque in 2009. He was very moved by his visit and the realisation that the children cared for there were very sick. This inspired him to try and complete a Double Downs Link Challenge (60 miles) the following year to raise more funds for the hospice. He did it with his Dad in around SEVEN hours. He is again looking forward to cycling the Downs Link Challenge in 2011. Now Aidan is encouraging you to TAKE THE BIG CHALLENGE FOR 2011!
Do you want to get fit this year, have fun as well as raising money for Chestnut Tree House? Why not start training now for The Downs Link Challenge? This annual bike ride of up to 30 miles across the stunning scenery of the Sussex Downs is a great, family friendly event. This year the ride starts at Bramber Castle at 8am on Saturday 21st May. Log onto www.downslinkchallenge .co.uk for all the details, maps and entry forms. Cycling is a great form of exercise, and most importantly it's fun. There are lots of health benefits associated with regular cycling. Your cardiovascular fitness will improve and this means you’ll lower your risk of heart attack and stroke. On average, 350 calories an hour are burned off during leisure cycling so it’s a good way to lose weight. Pedalling is low impact, so you can improve muscle tone without stressing your knee and ankle joints. The Downs Link Challenge has the advantage of being mainly off road, following the route along the old dismantled railway line between Bramber and Christ’s Hospital. The countryside is beautiful and the wildlife is plentiful. The Downs Link Challenge has raised over £30,000 so far for Chestnut Tree House, the only hospice for children in Sussex. Every penny is vital to this valuable service… so… get on your bike and see them at The Downs Link Challenge on 21st May 2011

Shoreham's buried treasure
T
he reCenT STory in the national press about a boy finding a pendant worth 2.5 million with a metal detector, illustrates how much of our history lies undiscovered beneath fields and towns all over the country. In 1999, among these finds of ‘buried treasure’ was a substantial cache of Roman coins, found in a field around three kilometres north of Shoreham. Working with a metal detector and the permission of the landowner, Mr J. Howe discovered 4105 coins, together with the remains of a large grey pot. With the Roman invasion of AD43, West Sussex became an important area for trade and commerce. The Romans established their regional capital at Chichester and built a network of roads and villas across the area, connecting the towns to the ports. Important Roman remains discovered in West Sussex include the palace at Fishbourne and villas at Bignor and Southwick. The Roman coins found at Shoreham were uncovered over a period of ten days and they were discovered spread over an area of around ten metres. The coins would originally have been grouped together, but years of ploughing the fields had spread them over a wider area. The cache of Roman coins and the pieces of pot were taken to Worthing museum. Here they were identified as third century Roman in origin. The use of the pot is open to speculation. There were too many coins present to have all been contained in the one pot, and when filled with coins it would have been too heavy to carry. At Worthing museum the pieces of pottery were carefully taped together and found to consist of two thirds of a rounded container, with a narrower base and neck. The collection of coins was washed and then taken up to the British museum in London. The number of coins was so substantial it needed two people to carry them. At the British museum, the Roman coin section was able to identify several different types of coin among the collection. The two earliest in date were from the reign of Emperor Severus Alexander (AD 222-35) and his direct
12
predecessor Emperor Elagabalus (AD218 –22). These two coins are silver denarii’s, the main denomination in the Roman Empire from the third century BC. They consist of about 45% pure silver. The majority of Roman coins found in the 1999 haul at Shoreham are however from the years AD238 –74. During this time there was a succession of Roman Emperors, during decades of political instability, plagues and failed military campaigns. Emperors depicted on the coins include Philip, Decius, Gallus and Gallienius, most of who died as a result of military actions. At one point during the turbulence, Britain broke away from central control. Between AD260 –74 it was, with France and Spain, part of a Gallic Empire, still Roman, but with a leadership of its own that was pretty much independent of Rome. Later coins in the haul feature the leaders of this Gallic Empire - Postumus (260-9 AD), Victorinus (AD269-70) and Tetricus the first and second. The later coins have the least silver content of all those discovered, often as little as 1 to 5%. These coins are known as radiates and inflation had caused them to replace the denarii’s by this time as the coins in most common everyday usage. These coins are made of what is known as billion – essentially mostly bronze with a small amount of added silver. Some of the Shoreham coins did not actually originate from Rome however, but were locally made inferior copies. These coins would have been manufactured due to a shortage of official supplies of money. They are also an example of the sophisticated manufacturing that was happening in Britain at this time. It is not known why the coins were deposited in such a large quantity just north of modern day Shoreham, or what might have occupied this site in Roman times. Perhaps later archaeological investigations will throw more light on the mystery of Shoreham’s own ‘buried treasure’. Judy Upton To advertise call: 01273 452065

Preparing for the year ahead a
haPPy neW Year to all of you who take the time to read the column, I hope Christmas was everything you hoped for and more! Well, here we go again, into the New Year and Spring time accelerating towards us, with mid-Winter behind us and the evenings getting lighter, little by little. I’m not wishing the year away, but I love this time of year and can’t wait for it. When you work outside, everyday you can see little signs of spring time fighting through each day. Of course that means there’s more work to do in the garden! Hopefully we won’t be covered in yet another blanket of snow when you read this, but already in the garden you can start to undertake some work to put new life in the garden. Bare root roses can be planted out, but always be careful to ensure you plant them to the same depth as they were in the pot. Despite the ravages of winter, there will still be some weeds growing in the borders, so get in amongst them and get them out now. This is an easy job to do whilst the ground is moist. Never miss an opportunity to get some more compost or manure dug into the beds whilst you are there, but watch out for new growth. You can also plant bare rooted canes, such as raspberries and fruit trees. Give them plenty of compost when you plant them. It’s also a good time to tidy up any existing fruit canes, such as blackberries by pruning them back. Thinking ahead 16
to the growing seasons you can carry on using your compost bins, or start improving the ground for your bean trenches, by filling them with compost and other green material. We recently had a large bin full of about three weeks of material that was supposed to go in the compost bin, which due to the weather I hadn’t been able to. (Well that was my excuse) I buried this straight into a trench in the ground and it was a swampy mess covered with about six inches of soil. I was amazed that a few weeks later, it had all been devoured by the worms and turned into wonderful compost. Guess where my beans will be going this year! On the subject of looking head, don’t forget to start ordering seeds or potatoes if you are doing so from a catalogue, so you have them at the right time. This time of year is always a good time to get any machinery serviced before the usual spring rush, and it’s worth taking the time to clean off and sharpen any tools. You will be amazed at how much easier it is digging with a spade that has a clean sharp edge, so for the sake of a few minutes work, make life easier! I’m really looking forward to the growing season this year. By the time you read this I should be well into the task of re-landscaping our front garden, with the aim of turning it into a vegetable growing area on our doorstep. It’s a real experiment as we are trying to
keep it looking pleasant as a landscaped garden, but keep it functional as well. I will give updates of how it is going and hopefully the odd photo as well. Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

Feel Good Factor is completely unique because it concentrates on lymphatic health and fluid retentive problems associated with weight gain. You can do private or small exercise classes and get on the road to fitness, reduce, tone and tighten up targeting specific areas you need i.e. waist and thighs. Just breathing pumps lymphatics without running. FGF has a full range of therapies addressing the issue of being overweight and health related problems. All Yvette`s therapists including Karolina, personal exercise instructor are aware of the importance of lymphatic health in the fight against weight, fluid retention, disease and health they are there to help assist

you reach your target goal and size. Also a centre for beauty, Yvette specializes in anti-ageing treatments because prevention is always a better option than a cure. Beauty treatments are always part of feeling good whether it be an eyebrow shape, eyelash tint or facial. If you are feeling good on the inside you start to take care of the outside appearance. Visit fgf.uk.com for more information about all our treatments and therapies.
Feel Good Factor — Your Health How fed up are we to keep hearing diet and exercise to feel healthier! Yes! Absolutely you must eat a balanced diet — all in moderation, take exercise to keep the blood pumping around your body — vitally important! But sometimes you can feel tired, lethargic, unwell, swollen and you just don`t know why? You usually put it down to weight if you are overweight. If you`re not, it`s time of the month or stress, pet problems, 19
