NEW SHOREHAM SKATEBOARD PARK
A
dur's amazing and unique skatepark bowl at the Ham in Shoreham opens officially at 11am on May 8th 2010. Local skateboarders, who have been involved from the beginning, can’t wait to get their boards on the bowl. A group of skaters have worked with Adur Council and the skatepark is a credit to their dedication and enthusiasm. This will be the first skatepark in Sussex to feature a 'deep bowl' and 'street course'. The 'street course' is not quite complete but Adur's skaters are chomping on the bit to get on the bowl. Parks and project manager of the skatepark Clive Bramble said: “We were hoping to open the street course as well, but unfortunately there’s still a small amount of work to do to have it as perfect as we want. Adur’s skaters have been waiting patiently to get on the bowl so we decided not to keep them waiting any longer and to get it open." From the skater group and Involved from the start of the project is Paul Parsons. He said: “We have always strived to bring something really special to our riders. Now I am proud to say, we have totally pulled it off! Shoreham skatepark will be a huge boost to the local and UK skate scene, all thanks to the dedication of the skatepark's steering group, Adur Council and all of our many supporters. Now enough talking....let's get rollin' ... ” With £120,000 from the Big Lottery and £30,000 from Viridor, the project, which has taken longer than expected to complete, is now ready to be enjoyed by skateboarders. Contractors Blakedown Landscapes (Operational) Ltd have built the Canadian Spectrum design. 4
Brighton & Hove Anglo Japanese Network A
nn Wright has run the Brighton & Hove Japanese Network in Southwick for five years. If you are interested in Japanese culture you might like to join. The society is free to join and is email-based, so you must have an email address to join. Although originally Brighton & Hove there are now about 130 members in the UK and Japan, including 80 in Sussex, both Japanese and Westerners. Members come from a wide ranging background — from academics to musicians, demonstrators of Japanese culture, Japanese gardeners, textile experts etc. and members who are just interested in Japanese culture. A monthly long email will tell you about Japanese culture that is going on in London and Sussex. It will also recommend books and inform you of various other things about Japan. There are some meetings locally, about 5 a year — these are social events and the price to attend is only the cost of the food etc. The society has no money and I run it on a voluntary basis. The aim of the society is to promote friendship between Japanese and Westerners and to inform members of public Japanese cultural events and Japanese members in this country of unusual local British cultural events. If you are interested please telephone Ann on 01273-594697. She will need to meet you before joining because this is a personal society and then you will need to fill out an email enrolment form. Ann does not have a website but you can find her society listed on the UK Japanese Embassy website.
Stroke Awareness
I
n April the Shoreham & Southwick Rotary Club ran their annual 'Stroke Awareness' clinic on behalf of the Stroke Awareness Association, at the Holmbush Centre. It is a fact that 40% of the 150,000 strokes suffered by people in the UK each year could be prevented by controlling raised Blood Pressure, which is the single biggest risk factor and in most cases this control is not difficult to maintain. Three nurses and Dr David Gordon took blood pressure readings and offered advice where necessary. Many members of our local Rotary club encouraged shoppers to take advantage of this free service. 148 people had their blood pressure checked and advice was given accordingly. The 148 was made up of 93 ladies and 55 gentlemen. 24 of the ladies were advised to have a further check at their GP’s practice of whom three were considered 'semi urgent' and one 'urgent'. 18 of the men were advised to be re-checked at their Practice, of whom four were considered to be 'semi-urgent'. Dr Gordon thought the mornings work was very worthwhile and he would strongly recommend that anyone reading this, who has not had their blood pressure checked for a long time (or never!!), should attend their local practice who he knows, will be delighted to check it for them. It really doesn’t hurt, it’s free and if everyone did as Dr Gordon suggested 40% of the 150,000 would NOT HAVE A HAD A STROKE – that’s 60,000 less strokes! Isn’t this worth a little time and thought? The Marlipins Museum
p
lans For the establishment of the Friends of Marlipins Museum are now well advanced. The inaugural Annual General Meeting will be held at the Museum on June 23, 2010, at 7.30 pm, so if you wish to become involved in the Friends and the Museum, please come along. The displays are to be revamped, and help will be required in many ways, from simple advice and opinion to hard physical work I am delighted to announce that the Council of the Sussex Archaeological Society has agreed to support our efforts to make Marlipins the centre of local archaeological, history, and social activities by reducing the admission fee for this year to £2 for adults, despite the deficit in our annual income. We need to raise more funds through our activities and to encourage more people to come to see us to make up the shortfall, so the Friends have a real function to perform. The Museum is putting on a series of exhibitions this summer, which should be of wide interest. Currently Eddie Colquhoun is showing a selection of his historic photographs illustrating the history of Shoreham Airport (100 Years of Aviation in Shoreham). This will run until July 10. Subsequent exhibitions will deal with the Shoreham port and the Shoreham film industry. Education also features in our plans. On the third Saturday in each month special educational activities are scheduled by the Society for the gallery. This is in addition to school visits that can be arranged with the curator, who can be contacted via marlipins@sussexpast.co.uk, where the latest information on our activities can be found. Finally, your support will be much appreciated at a car-boot sale at Adur Recreation Ground on Saturday, June 5. We hope this event will go a long way towards covering our deficit. On October 22 we are planning a guitar concert as part of Adur Arts Live. Please watch our Website for further information on these activities.

Predictions for Interest Rates i
am Writing this article on Election Day, 6th May. Normally the interest rate decision would have been made today by the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), but the decision has been postponed to Monday 10th May. By the time you read this article you will know the outcome of the election, and also what the interest rate decision has been. The Bank of England were given the power to set interest rates in 1997. This was a major reform by the Labour Government. The reform took the politics out of our interest rate decisions and put the decision firmly into the hands of the Bank’s committee. The Government felt that Ministerial control of the rates was not helping long term economic stability; they wanted to end the boom and bust. We have seen that in the lead up to this election, the Bank has kept rates stable, in fact they have remained at their lowest 0.5% for 14 months now. So, now the General Election is over, what are the predictions? It is widely anticipated that rates will remain low at least until the end of 2010. Many economists believe that the rate will not rise until 2011, feeling that any interest rate rise could have a damaging effect on our fragile recovery going forward. So if they are right, this is good news for all those on tracker or standard variable rate mortgages, rates could remain low for some time still. Keep in mind that these are only predictions. Some cautious borrowers are already taking fixed rates to secure their payments for the next few years. Fixed rates are currently higher than the variable, so you would pay a premium to fix. This has led to many just sticking to the lower variable rate for the time being.
Interest rates on offer from the lenders seem to have stabilised over the past few months. Deals are always changing but things seem to have settled. Interest rates on offer from the lenders seem to have stabilised over the past few months. Deals are always changing but things seem to have settled. This certainly makes it easier to deal with in terms of finding the right deals, they no longer seem to be withdrawn from under your feet, but are the lenders easier to deal with? The answer is no! If you are applying for a mortgage soon, you may find you have to jump through a few hoops. Even if you have a large deposit and seem to be a low risk borrower. Lenders still want all of their paperwork and their boxes ticked. So don’t 8
be shocked if you are asked for proof of everything in terms of your financial position. This could include payslips, P60, accounts, proof of deposit, bank statements, the list goes on. If you want a stress-free mortgage application and a quick offer, it would be wise to dig out all of these things before you meet with your adviser. The more you can give the lender upfront the quicker the process will be.

Modern living, the stress response and yoga
i
n our eVer increasingly hectic world of activity and busyness, “stress” has become a buzz word that most people can identify with. If you cast your mind back to a stressful time, such as being on the receiving end of some bad news, taking your driving test or worrying over finances then you can probably remember the symptoms associated with that situation – a dry mouth, racing heart, sweaty palms, goose-flesh or maybe an enhanced sense of alertness. Our body has cleverly been designed to cope with stressors by preparing to fight or flee from any potential physical threat. Think about a cave man encountering a wild animal – the stress response is switched on and his body reacts to deal with the threatening situation by shunting blood flow away from organs that are not required for immediate survival (such as digestion) and redirecting it towards the major muscles preparing the body for the ‘emergency’. This is known as the ‘fight or flight’ response and is regulated by a branch of our autonomic nervous system called the sympathetic nervous system. The problem (or benefit depending on how you look at it!) is that nowadays we rarely come up against a sabre tooth tiger and our sources of stress are far more likely to be of a psychological or emotional nature rather than physical. Being stuck in traffic, opening a bank statement or rowing with a partner are far more likely to be sources of stress we encounter on a daily basis, yet our body still perceives these as immediate ‘emergencies’ and the same stress response is triggered. The flip side of the autonomic nervous system switch is known as the parasympathetic nervous system. This relaxation response works antagonistically to the sympathetic system and is responsible for helping the body to reverse the process of the stress response and can be thought of as governing the rest, digest and detoxify potential in the body. If our sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) is stimulated over long periods without the parasympathetic (rest, digest and detoxify) being allowed to work antagonistically then we are increasing our risk of suffering a whole host of symptoms associated with stress including feelings of anxiety, exhaustion, overwhelm, cravings for ‘quick fix’ energisers
12
or pick-me-ups such as caffeine, sugar, cigarettes or alcohol, disrupted digestion or IBS type symptoms, lowered libido and altered mood — to name a few! Most people’s sympathetic nervous system is working overtime in today’s ever increasingly stressful world with the parasympathetic only being allowed to come to the rescue when we are sleeping! Chronic stress over time also puts us at increased risk for more serious health conditions such as raised blood pressure and associated heart conditions, digestive problems including ulcers and colitis and increased incidence of viruses and infections due to compromised immunity.
So what can we do to assist our mind and body to relax? Pursuing any form of relaxation such as sitting down with a good book, listening to music, walking out in the fresh air or receiving a massage can all assist with inducing a parasympathetic response. However, the deeper forms of relaxation such as the practice of yoga can have powerful, therapeutic qualities giving our body the rest it needs to relax and rejuvenate. By combining asana (posture work), pranayama (breathing techniques) and meditation we are helping to rebalance our nervous system and counteract the negative effects that stress can potentially have on our mind, body and spirit. The root causes of stress are as individual and unique as different people’s personalities and what causes stress for one person may not cause stress for another. Mindfulness and deep relaxation through the practice of yoga can not only provide us with a space to recognise what is causing us stress but also teach us to respond in a different way with the potential to improve our resilience to stress, enhance our sense of well-being and act preventively against the longer-term risks associated with the stress response of modern living.

William Havergal Brian t
he ClassiCal Composer William Havergal Brian is a former Shoreham resident who left an impressive musical legacy including more than thirty-two symphonies. William Brian was born in 1876, in the pottery town of Dresden, Stoke On Trent. He was unusual among classical composers in the fact that he had a working class upbringing. William Brian adopted the name ‘Havergal’ in 1899, from the name of a hymn writing family. After leaving school, Brian became for a time a church organist in Cheshire. In 1895 he was inspired by a performance of Elgar’s ‘King Olaf’ to start composing and was further influenced by the music of Richard Strauss. William Brian married Isabel Priestley, in 1898, and had five children. Money was tight, but in 1907 he had his first real success when his English Suite caught the attention of Henry Wood who subsequently performed it at the London Proms. The work was an overnight success and because of it Brian obtained both a publisher and performances for his next orchestral works. Also in 1907, Brian was approached by wealthy businessman Herbert Minton Robinson and offered £500 a year to allow him to devote himself to composing full-time. Unfortunately Brian found it difficult to finish many of his compositions at this time, and having been unused to having much money (£500 then being a decent yearly wage) he had trouble managing his allowance. An affair with his servant Hilda Hayward meant Havergal Brian’s marriage broke down in 1913. From that point onwards much of the yearly allowance went to his ex-wife and their five children. Brian went on to have a further five children with Hilda, finally marrying her after his wife’s death in 1933. The First World War temporarily stopped Havergal Brian from composing. He volunteered for the Honourable Artillery Company but was invalided out with a hand injury before seeing any active service. He then worked at the Audit Office of
14
the Canadian Forces Contingent until December 1915. With Hilda, Brian moved to Birmingham in 1919, and then to Lewes and Brighton. Money worries continued to be a problem for him however with the composer having to take work copying and arranging the music of others to make ends meet. Employment of a more steady kind came with a job writing articles for the journal ‘The British Bandsman’. In 1927, Brian became assistant editor of the journal ‘Musical Opinion’ and moved to London. Now he had a reasonable wage and could once more devote time to composing. He wrote a number of symphonies and an opera ‘The Tigers’, which was based on his comically disastrous wartime experience. Havergal Brian had written over ten symphonies by the 1950s, though none had been recorded. Finally however he was about to receive some of the recognition his work had long deserved. In 1954, BBC music producer Robert Simpson persuaded Sir Adrian Boult to premiere Brian’s Eighth Symphony. In 1958, William Havergal Brian moved to Shoreham, living on the beach at number 1, The Marlinspike, which was bought for him by his daughter Elfreda and her husband. He was at this time eighty-two and was finally starting to gain proper recognition for his work Robert Simpson arranged an amateur performance of the huge Symphony Number 1: ‘The Gothic’ in 1961 and it received its premiere production at Central Hall, Westminster, with an orchestra conducted by Bryan Fairfax. A professional production of the same work at the Royal Albert Hall, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult, and broadcast live to the nation followed in 1966. Another champion of Havergal Brian during these later years was Phil Lesh of rock band The Grateful Dead, who promoted both his recordings and performances At his home in Shoreham, in the later years of his life, Havergal Brian wrote twenty further symphonies, in
a flurry of creativity. This brought his total output of symphonies to thirtytwo, eight of which he completed after the age of ninety. He managed to write several other works during this period too. William Havergal Brian died after a fall in November 1972, age 96. A few of his works had now been produced and recorded. Although he still hadn’t heard the majority of his work produced, he died knowing that the BBC had agreed to perform all of his symphonies. In 1973 the great international conductor Leopold Stokowski performed the world premiere of Havergal Brian’s 28th Symphony, in a BBC broadcast. Produced by Robert Simpson at Maida Vale Studio 1, it featured the New Philharmonia Orchestra. The Daily Telegraph reviewer wrote of this concert, "It was fascinating to contemplate the uniqueness of the event - a 91-year-old conductor learning a new work by a 91-year-old composer."

The Vegetable Garden n
e’er Cast a clout till May is out! Me and my big mouth, still I did say May can still have a few surprises so watch your new plants. Hopefully none got damaged by the cold snap in Mid May. Fingers crossed it will be warming up nicely by the time you read this, and we will have gone past the stage of looking at the patch of soil you planted that row of seeds in and wondering when they will ever come up! As you can probably tell from my monthly input, my real passion is the vegetable garden, but not everyone is lucky enough to have an allotment or a lot of space in the garden. Even if all you have is a small balcony, there is no reason why you can’t grow a small range of plants that will be very tasty and can be attractive to look at. The most obvious way to do this is to use growbags. Traditionally they are used for growing tomatoes, but they can be used for just about any plant if space is limited, there is no reason why you can’t split the bag long ways to use it to grow rows of salad leaves, radishes, rocket or lettuces. While on the subject of growbags, it’s important to remember that they only contain a limited amount of nutrients and will dry out quickly. Regular watering and the use of additional feed, such as a liquid fertilizer or slow release pellets is always a good idea. They can also be stacked on top of each other to give a deeper root bed for tomato plants or other taller vegetables such as beans or peas.
16
With a bit of imagination virtually any container can be used for growing things in. Just make sure there are some drainage holes, a bit of gravel in the bottom and some decent compost in there. I’ve even seen old wellies used to grow vegetables in. If you’ve got limited space, give it a try, there’s nothing better than taking some fresh food from the garden straight to your plate. Its also a wonderful activity to get the children involved in One thing that has been noticeable about the weather since Easter is that it has been very dry, with only a few sporadic bouts of rain. (I do not accept any responsibility if you are now reading this article in a torrential downpour as the wet weather has set in for the summer!)The ground is quite dry so make sure you look after any new plants or grass to allow their root systems to establish and not dry out. Water before a plant starts to droop to avoid cell damage to the plants structure which can weaken it. This time of the year is when you win or lose the battle with the weeds. It seems they sprint off well before any seedlings you have planted and are 2 feet tall before you have turned your back. The easiest way to get rid of them is to use a hoe, especially while the ground is dry. Few weeds will survive once they have been regularly hoe’d. It’s a lot easier and quicker to do this now then spend hours once they
have taken hold. Not only that they will have had time to spread their seeds and so you will have created a legacy of work for next year. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited

Osteopathy s
pinal pain is an enormous problem and is responsible for more time off work than everything else except mental health issues. However in most cases it is not something that “you have to learn to live with”, nor will it necessarily get worse over the years. Of course there are many different causes of spinal pain including rheumatic and arthritic conditions, (both of which I shall be writing about in future issues). However, by far the largest category
18
of people who have spinal pain are diagnosed with “non specific musculo skeletal pain”. This means there is nothing there that should not be there (such as a tumour) and everything is there which should be there, but it is just not functioning well. This idea of function is very dear to an osteopath’s heart! We believe that if the body is sufficiently flexible and strong to take the strains of everyday life, then a lot of spinal pain can be avoided.
Our bodies are affected by many things such as our working positions, posture, genetic make up and wear and tear. We can often cope with these demands on our bodies, but as they continue, our ability to accommodate these stresses breaks down, and many of us experience pain and stiffness in our joints - especially in our backs and necks. Osteopaths are trained to work on the muscles, ligaments and joints to regain strength and flexibility in our spines, so they function more effectively and are able to adapt to life’s stresses. Sometimes we work with massage and stretching techniques and sometimes with manipulation or exercises. Treatment is tailor made for each individual. The first consultation and treatment lasts 45 minutes(£35) and subsequent treatments last 30 minutes (£30) Physiotherapy, acupuncture and podiatry are also available on site if we feel these therapies would be more suitable for your problem.

How's that? i
sn’t it typiCal? Just when you think you are doing well; reaching the top of your form and an important time is coming up; along comes a niggle, that turns into a pain and then into a problem!! I am sure many of us can recount moments like this. It was particularly so for J., a keen sportswoman. She had been carrying niggles that had now become injuries affecting her sport and her team’s performance. J’s particular field of sport is Ladies Cricket and as one of the bowlers for their successful team these recurring issues were now impacting on her consistency in performance. Fortunately, the team’s astute cricket coach thought the difficulty might be linked with the way J’s feet worked and that if her feet could be encouraged to work better the problem might improve. Deciding to take control of her health J’ attended PodiaClinic in Southwick, where it soon became apparent that the neglected niggle had actually become a number of health problems including: • Regular calf pain for over a year • Both knees were painful • Low back pain for 5 years • Carrying Ham String injuries Working as a team the clinic Podiatrist and Physiotherapist examined J’s feet whilst she walked. Though looking similar the feet were certainly working significantly different to each other, in terms of how they moved, which also meant a difference in how the forces behind the movement passed through each foot and leg. To get a better idea of how this impacted on her game a video was taken of J’ running up to the wickets and bowling. From that it was possible to see how the feet worked when
20
active in the sport. It also allowed us to observe J’s arm swing and back position in the act of bowling. A full gait analysis at the clinic added more pieces into the puzzle. From the video we could observe how the pelvis action and muscle groups surrounding the hip and thighs were adding to the issue. In addition, J’ being a bowler, it was apparent that instead of using her full height and length of arm to her advantage these movements were constrained. Working out if a foot issue is contributing to a back and leg problem means thinking more than about the feet. Indeed there is a saying that “he who treats the site of pain is lost”, that is, look at the bigger picture as a cause may lie elsewhere! Sometimes, if there are multiple contributors to a health problem a single clinician can feel “stumped”. So how can we help such a “maiden” get “over” the problem? Simply put, it is advantageous to work in and sometimes treat others as a team. The most important member of the team of course was J. Through taking on board our professional advice and treatments, by doing the exercises advised by the Physiotherapist and by wearing the special shoe inserts designed to alter the forces through her feet and legs J. made a very quick recovery and, OWZAT, her bowling improved as well!! J’ was eventually proactive in dealing with the health issues that hindered her pleasure and activity. Being proactive in dealing with niggles allows you to keep active and to get closer to great performance, be that in sport or every day life.

Just what does go on in there? s
outhWiCK is a historically rooted town in Sussex with a local community that extends back to at least the Doomsday Book. A focal point of the heart of this community was once the Manor House and to some extent that continued last Century when its side building, Manor Farm House, served first as the local library and then the GP practice. More recently, Manor Farm House has become the Headquarters of The Healthy Company, which provides a range of private healthcare & wellbeing services to the local community and businesses across the U.K. The Healthy Company was founded by Dr Tim Stevenson, who was previously a local GP. He has brought together a team of highly qualified healthcare professionals that provide: Podiatry; Physiotherapy; Osteopath; and Psychological Therapies This team also supports the occupational health physicians and advisors of The Healthy Company who work with local and national businesses to improve health & wellbeing within the workplace. The expertise of our healthcare professionals is recognised both nationally and internationally.
Dr Tim Stevenson has been invited to speak to business leaders in a number of global industries on the implications of health & wellbeing within the workplace, for example: the management of diabetes in flight cabin crews.
Locally In keeping with its local origins, The Healthy Company is a proud partner of the Brighton Marathon, with Dr Tim Stevenson as Race Medical Director. In the run-up to the Marathon, our Physiotherapists saw increased numbers of runners seeking treatment as a result of injuries incurred during training. We were able to provide added benefit to the rehabilitation treatment with training advice provided by Louis Jones our Physiotherapist, who completed the course in 2 hours and 45 minutes. In the April edition of this magazine our Podiatrist Ian Linane introduced readers to the idea of ‘RunFit/WalkFit’ to encourage people to give consideration to foot health in their recreational activities. Some of the marathon runners benefited greatly from the foot joint mobilisations given as a part of this programme. We are also involved with sporting organisations locally. Dr Tim Stevenson is Team Physician for Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club. Amy Rennolds, our Physiotherapist, also provides weekly sports injury treatment for them and for the local Rugby Club.
So what does go on in Manor Farm House? A lot, as you have seen. Not only do we provide private healthcare & wellbeing services for local residents, we also work with businesses, community organisations and sports clubs to deliver health & wellbeing for all!
