Feeling good at Feel good Factor F
eeLing reaLLY good inside? These days it seems almost a distant memory! Shoreham`s newest Health & Beauty Centre Feel Good Factor was opened last month. Owner Yvette Jordan has been working around the local area for the last four years and her loyal following of clients welcome her new venture. Yvette`s proven approach has an extremely effective, new way forward for our Health, Weight, Diet, Inch-Loss, Exercise and Beauty. It stems from her 27 years experience and the fact she is a Lymphoedema Therapist. She said “When I started Outside In Detox four years ago the health benefits that women were experiencing were truly amazing. I needed to know
more medically what was happening to give all these amazing results. On my course as a Lymphoedema Therapist I learnt obesity is one of the causes of Lymphoedema, but this devastating condition actually happens very, very, very slowly. “You can diagnose early warning signs and visibly see the symptoms happening up to 5-10 years beforehand, and you can actually see these early stages in many overweight women, walking around. What is very sad, is they do not have any idea what is happening to them. And it`s all down to the lymphatic system becoming extremely sluggish and stagnant and basically being ignored, purely because we don`t understand how it works.”

Shoreham & Southwick editor’s comment
Hello and welcome the March edition of the Inside Shoreham and Southwick Magazine. This month we have some great news on what is going on in the area of Shoreham. We have the new £600,000 scheme for East Street. You can see the latest plans and details for the pedestrianization on page 6. Its looks quite amazing! As we spring into March we will be seeing the spring buds peeping through and brightening our front gardens with their gorgeous colour. There are some great ideas on planting and what you should be doing around this time of year in the article New Shoots by Mark Oakley. With lots occurring through this coming month it is going to be busy. We have of course Mothers Day which is on the 3rd of April this year and we have on the 8th March the celebration of 100th Anniversary of The International Women’s Day. Also, just a reminder that this month the clocks will be going forward on the 27th of March. Until April, we wish you a great month! Angela

Quirky Quiz Night Success
T
he Crown and Anchor pub, in Shoreham High Street, launched their Quirky Quiz night at the beginning of February which turned out to be a huge success. The high turn out meant they had to open up their function room to accommodate all 95 players. Hosted by Brighton and Hove’s most popular Quiz Master Mark Stack engaged all participants to several rounds including Faceless Films, TV, Family Fortunes, Speed Rounds and obviously the good old General Knowledge. Each week is different but look out for a taster session starting at the beginning of March. Players were certainly vocal upon hearing the results for each round and it proved that this night can brighten any dull Tuesday evening. It’s a fun quiz for fun people – not for wannabe Einsteins. The populartiy of the night meant that some pub-goers were already reserving their tables for the following week. The Crown and Anchor Quirky Quiz Night is on every Tuesday night. It starts at 8.00pm and lasts for a good couple of hours so reserve your seat early by calling 01273 463500. It costs only £1 per person plus £1 per table to enter – all returned in prizes. Prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and second to last!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Volunteers are needed to join the spring Beach Clean organised by the Friends of Shoreham Beach (FoSB), which takes place on Saturday 19 March. Anyone who would like to take part should be at the Old Fort at 10.45am – and it’s advisable to bring gloves! Litter-picking will take place until 12.30 and refreshments will be provided afterwards. As well as collecting litter, FoSB will be conducting a survey on behalf of the Marine Conservation Society. For more information call Joy Daintree on 01273 462584 or log on to www.fosbeach.com.

Pedestrianising East Street A
£600,000 scheme to pedestrianise East Street in Shoreham started in February. The West Sussex County Council scheme will make the area a traffic-free environment, with space for the community to meet and events such as farmers markets. The work will involve removing the existing road surface between East Street’s junctions with the High Street and New Road. A new shared surface for pedestrians and cyclists will 6
be laid of granite material to complement the existing conservation area. There will also be new benches, litterbins and cycle parking as well as new street lighting. Delivery vehicles will only be able to drive into East Street, between High Street and New Road, before 10am and after 5pm. The new route for through traffic will be via Brunswick Road, Ham Road and Eastern Avenue, to the junction with A259 Brighton Road. The pedestrian crossing at
the end of East Street will be moved to the east towards the bottom of East Street to connect up with the new Shoreham Beach footbridge once that is finished. Lionel Barnard, Deputy Leader of the County Council with responsibility for Highways and Transport, said: “Every effort will be made to keep disruption in the area to a minimum. This is being done by coinciding our scheme with the remainder of Southern Gas Networks’ scheme that is currently being carried out.
“This scheme will benefit the local community and shoppers as a whole.” The work is scheduled to be completed by early summer, weather permitting. It will be carried out Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 6pm and occasionally on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm. Temporary signed diversion routes will be in place from time to time during the course of the scheme. Residential and business access will be maintained. The scheme is being funded by money from the Government’s Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), and Sustrans. To advertise call: 01273 452065

Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice
Finances – making sense of the minefield
T
he FirsT Thing I do when dealing with new clients is ask them what mortgages, policies and pensions they already have in place. The question is often answered with “ I have a few policies and plans but I can’t remember what they do”. Then it will normally be the case of being handed a dusty pile of old papers which normally mean nothing to the person who owns them! Life company paperwork is often difficult to understand so it is not surprising that people lose track. This is where I can help. As an independent adviser, I can obtain information and updates on all of your current plans. My job is to take this dusty pile and make sense of it. Once it has all been summarised in a simple format we can make sense of exactly what you are paying for and what it is doing for you. Do your plans fit your current situation? Are you throwing money down the drain paying for something you simply don’t need any more? Situations and policies change, so it is always worth a review. One area people really don’t understand (or don’t want to) is pensions. Please read on! If you have ever taken out a pension or opted out of SERPs (or State Second Pension) there are many of you who will be in old fashioned plans, paying high fees to your provider and not reaping the rewards. High fees combined with low performance mean that your pension plan could be going nowhere. This really does have an impact on the income you will receive in retirement.
I believe that people really do lose touch with their finances, this is easy to do in the rush of modern life. This is why our online client system has been developed. A phrase I often hear is “my pension is frozen”. When people say this they really mean that they don’t pay into their pension any more. Please don’t forget that the company still has a lump sum of your money, this needs looking after. A simple review can reap rewards in years to come. I believe that people really do lose touch with their finances, this is easy to do in the rush of modern life. This is why our online client system has been developed. The system enables us to keep your policies up to date at the touch of a button. We can see clearly where you stand, and any areas which need attending to. From your point of view, if you like to deal online, we can provide you with access to your own client 10
file. This is a central point containing clear information on all of your plans, pensions and investments. Values are updated, and relevant paperwork scanned. Believe me, once your finances are on the system you will never lose touch again. If you don’t use a computer, this is not a problem, we can provide all of the same information in a paper format. if you would like me to make a full review of your finances, then please call me on 01273 224667. i am an independent financial adviser. i offer a free initial consultation to new clients and home visits if required. Southwick Wheelwrights
i
n The daYs when everything was either pulled by horses or oxen, or piled into a handcart to be pushed or pulled, the craft of the wheelwright was vital. A wheelwright or wainwright traditionally ran a workshop where they worked with wood to build and repair wheel. Their craft is one of the oldest known to man and the origins of the wheel itself date back to prehistoric times. It was Stone Age man who discovered that a round stone or log could be utilised to move heavy objects. By 5000 BC primitive wheels were being cut from wooden planks. By around 2000 BC, the cartwheel with spokes that we know today had begun to appear. From Roman Britain to the age of the Victorians, the design of the traditional wheel, made by the wheelwright remained largely unchanged. Wagon or cart wheels were usually constructed hub first, then the spokes and the rim segments were cut. The parts were then assembled working from the centre outwards. By the middle of the nineteenth century hard-wearing iron tyres were being added to the rims of the wooden wheels after being fashioned by a blacksmith.
12
In 1845 there was a wheelwright based at 41, The Green in Southwick. Here on the western side of the lower part of The Green, Richard Longhurst Junior worked providing wheels for the numerous horse-drawn agricultural and road vehicles of the area. At this time Longhurst was also a parish clerk, and for a while he also diversified into brewing beer. His father Richard Longhurst Senior. had been the last parish constable of Southwick, responsible for law and order in the days before an organised local police force. Longhurst’s wheelwrights’ shop was single-storey and situated to the south of number 41. At its southeastern corner was a forge, which was used for heating iron tyres, so that they could be shrunk to fit tightly on the wooden cartwheels. The local wheelwright would have been a craftsman respected for his skills and he would have possessed a great knowledge of the properties of timber. More often than not the traditions and skills of their craft were passed down from father to son, and from master to apprentice. A wheelwright needed to source his timber supply, and while Southwick’s port would have provided some imported wood, oak would have been obtained locally when oak trees were felled during late spring and early summer, while beech, ash and elm would have been available during the winter months. All the timber would be kept by uncut until the winter months, when it would be sawn and then left to season for five or six years, before it
was finally made into wheels. From the year1871, another wheelwright, George West was registered as operating from the premises behind 41, The Green. Originating from Patcham, West had married Southwick born Sarah Stone at St. Michael’s church in 1868. In 1901 George West went on to build a house for his daughter, which is now number 37, the Green, and was for a time known as Cherry Cottage. The wheelwrights’ business at Southwick Green changed its named to William Sharp in 1911. Sharp was George West’s brother-in-law and in 1918 he moved the wheelwrights’ shop from The Green to the western end of Albert Road where it remained open for business until the mid 1920s. George West and his wife Sarah are buried in St. Michael’s churchyard, in the first grave on the right beyond the lych-gate. With the coming of the motorcar and then in 1895 the invention of the air-filled pneumatic tyre, the era of the wheelwright, like that of horse-drawn transport, was soon to begin coming to an end. By the start of the Second World War, the wheelwrights’ trade had dwindled away. Today a few of these craftspeople do still exist mainly serving the horse-drawn vehicles that are used by historical pageants, agricultural museums and by sporting events. Sadly there are no longer any wheelwrights plying their trade in Adur district. Judy Upton

New shoots i
’Ve JusT saT down to write this after a wonderful sunny day, having visited a garden carpeted with crocuses popping their heads up. Hopefully by the time you read this, it will be the turn of the daffodils to start showing themselves. Spring is definitely getting under way. This always seems to be a time of year when the days go by so quickly and if you don’t keep on top of jobs in the garden, you miss an opportunity to get certain things done and have to wait a whole year to do them. This is especially true with vegetables. One of my favourite things is planting up seeds. It’s great to spend a bit of time planting them up and then seeing the new shoots breaking through. It always seems to be a Sunday afternoon activity that I do with my children and they love it. It’s a good way for them to learn and get involved with the garden and food. I always use a range of seed plug trays as it keeps each plant individual and makes planting them on a lot easier. Make sure you give all your old trays a good clean before use and only use new compost to grow them in. You can always use a range of containers to sow them in, even used toilet roll holders make a good alternative to buying them. Another alternative is to use lengths of guttering as rows of seedlings can be easily slid into position from them when the time comes to plant them out. Always try to use fresh seeds that are in date, whether they are shop bought or your own that you collected from last year, follow the planting instructions 16
and don’t forget to label them! If you’ve never done it before give it a go, it’s really worth it. If you’ve got space in the greenhouse you could try something a little different by planting up hanging baskets, or any other container with strawberry plants. If you choose an early variety they should give you a nice early crop in time for the first week of Wimbledon. You can also get ahead of the game by planting other crops in pots in the greenhouse. That way you will have summer vegetables just a few weeks earlier than normal. Around the garden there is still pruning to do with later flowering shrubs such as buddleia and certain hydrangeas and clematis. Don’t be tempted to cut down the foliage of any spring bulbs that are starting to die back. They take the nutrients back down into the bulb ready for next year. It’s also worth sprinkling some fertiliser around them to give them a boost ready for next year as well. Just remember that we are nowhere near past the frosts, so don’t be in a hurry to remove frost protection from plants or plant out anything to early. It can all be killed off in one night’s sharp frost. Another familiar sound at this time of year is the lawnmower running up and down the lawn. Remember to start off with a high setting on the lawn and make sure you have a sharp blade on the mower. If the ground is still too wet for the first mow, get the rest of the lawn looking good and sort out the edges, to make the mowing easier and
to keep the lawn looking really sharp. Whatever you do in the garden it’s just a great excuse to get outside and make the most of the warmer lighter days after the long dark winter. So get out and enjoy it! Mark Oakley, Any Garden.

Outside Edge O
utside Edge is a comedy set against the background of that most quintessential of English sport, cricket. Roger, the local club captain, takes his job very seriously but is having trouble assembling a team to play the afternoon fixture against the British Railways Maintenance 24
Division (Yeading East). This is a minor problem compared to those which are about to occur among his own team with their wives and girlfriends. Bob is having marriage trouble as he is still doing odd jobs for his ex-wife behind his current wife's back! Alex's girlfriend locks
herself in the toilet and is having hysterics. Dennis flirts with all of the women, until his wife sets fire to his new BMW! Over affectionate Maggie insists on cuddling Kevin inside her fur coat at every opportunity, while at the same time trying to nurse his injured spinning finger! And what did happen
in Dorking? Can Roger hold it all together or will rain stop play? Originally written for the stage this play was adapted in 1982 for a one off television show starring Paul Eddington, Prunella Scales and Maureen Lipman. In the mid 1990's Harris adapted the play into a successful sitcom of the same name on ITV starring Robert Daws, Brenda Blethyn, Timothy Spall and Josie Lawrence. Performances: 7.30pm at The Barn Theatre in Southwick. Ticket Prices: £9.00/£10.00. Dates: Wednesday 13th - Saturday 16th April 2011. Tickets available from the Box Office, telephone 01273 597094, or online through our website www. southwickplayers.org.uk. Please note that only on-line purchases are subject to a booking fee.
