Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello and Welcome to the May edition of Inside Shoreham and Southwick. Well, spring is truly here on the south coast. The last few weeks have been scattered with some great days of warm sunshine. Great for walking along Shoreham beach and taking the kids out especially during the recent term break. We very much hope that you enjoy reading this months issue. We have lots of great articles and events happening in Shoreham, Southwick and surrounding areas. This month we have a special feature on a local firm Quake energy who are one of the largest installers of home insulation , central heating and solar water systems in the South East.

We also, have a restaurant review of the new Chambers Bistro in Shoreham High Street. As for our latest historical essay by Judy Upton, it is all about brickmaking in Shoreham and Southwick. Fantastic read. Finally, from a happy mummy, the playground on Beach Green is now fully up and running. The playground is fully enclosed and is such an improvement from how it was. Beach new playground

he new playground on Shoreham beach is so much better than the one we had before. It was officially opened on 22nd March and over the term break it was packed with families with children of all ages. The old Playground was very uninspiring, but it was been extended to twice its original size and with a lot more rides and climbing frames. The existing playground at Beach Green, has been extended to twice the original size with some great equipment to climb, swing and have loads of fun on. The new equipment was chosen by local children who voted for their favourite designs. The whole project was a joint effort by the community and Adur Council to provide a playground with equipment children want to play on. Cabinet member for a clean, green environment, Keith Dollemore said: “Children really enjoy the playgrounds in Adur. Involving local children and families ensures that we deliver the sort of parks children love.” The project is funded by Government Playbuilder funds of £50,000, and £15,000 from Adur Council. Play equipment supplier is Wicksteed Leisure Ltd. So, I hope for all parents, grandparents, that you have a great time in this new space where our kids can get some fresh air and exercise and more importantly have fun.

aST weeK The Bank of England voted for the thirteenth consecutive month to keep their base rate at 0.5%. This is the longest period without a decrease or increase since the rate was frozen at 4% between November 2001 and February 2003. Many economists are now predicting that rates will remain very low for a long period of time. We also now know that the General Election will take place on May 6th. The result of the election could have quite an impact on the economy, another reason rates will be expected to stay low. Not only do we need to stabilise our economy, but also deal with any impact the election may bring. According to the Halifax House Price index UK prices increased by 1.1% in March, partly offsetting February’s 1.6% fall. This was the eighth rise in the past nine months, taking the average price to £168,521, 9.1% above the low point reached last April. Prices in the first three months of 2010 were 0.6% higher than in the final quarter of 2009.

Are lenders lending? We all know that it is much more difficult now to get a mortgage. Self employed people or those with adverse credit have been hit especially hard. Some people are finding themselves stuck and unable to move. They could get a mortgage previously, but not again. Local Policing Car Crime Sussex Police are running Op Motorvation in an attempt to combat vehicle crime. This will involve PCSO’s and the Neighbourhood Policing Team identifying vehicles at risk and offering owners words of advise on how they can help avoid being a victim of crime. There has been a recent increase in the breaking into and taking of items from un-manned vehicles. Once again, Sussex Police are warning the public not leave any valuable items inside vehicles on view. Such things as Sat-Nav, Stereo, CD’s, brief cases, lap tops etc. are all an invitation to the would be criminal. Also tools of the trade are an attraction. Take anything of value out of the vehicle, and display a sticker saying ‘no tools kept in vehicle overnight’. The same goes for any copper piping that you may carry on top of the vehicle. This advise is really only common sense, but we find that the public still do not heed the warning. Another crime is the theft of number plates (used on another vehicle for crime), and car accessories like hub caps, mirrors, etc. that are perhaps being stolen to order. If you see or hear

anything suspicious any time please phone this in to the Police on the numbers as below.

Handbag/Purse/Wallet Theft We have had recent reports of these thefts also. Always keep your handbag/ purse with you and never leave it unattended, especially on a shopping trolley, or when trying shoes/clothing on, when you may wonder away to look in the mirror! A handbag carried on your shoulder is an easy target if left open; do not keep your purse in an open shopping bag. Also a visible wallet placed in a back trouser pocket is an extremely easy target.

Parking outside Schools PCSO’s across Adur are experiencing complaints from drivers and residents alike about the inconsiderate parking of parents when collecting their children from school. This can include parking on double yellow lines, the yellow zig-zag lines near school entrances (the latter is a ticketable offence carrying a £60 fine and 3 endorsements on a licence), parking in marked out bus stop lanes, on pavements causing obstructing, on junctions

obscuring the view for other vehicles. Please be considerate and park appropriately, do a drop off/collection share with other parents/carers, walk to the school if you can especially now the weather is improving.

Chambers Bistro

ASED IN THE Old Town Hall, in Shoreham High Street, Chambers Bistro is the latest addition of great restaurants in Shoreham. Walking through the airy entrance you are welcomed by professional staff who swiftly lead you to your table. This isn't a small restaurant and I would imagine the relaxed informal atmosphere would be wonderful to enjoy a special night – actually whatever the celebration Chambers Bistro would make a great venue to enjoy a really nice meal. The restaurant is very contemporary in style and the lighting allows you to absorb the atmosphere yet allowing yourselves to enjoy your meal at an intimate level. Until recently I didn't realise that Chambers replaced Prezzo as the appearance outside wasn't noticeable. So, it is a new family run restaurant that offers a wealth of experience from a passionate team to provide you with a memorable dining experience. Looking at the menu, the prices feel higher than they are as they are rounded to the nearest pound which can be a little off-putting. £7.95 looks and sounds cheaper than a flat £8 but hey that is only a personal opinion. To be honest the food appears to be good value. I heard their signature dish 'Chambers Beef Wellington' is a must but can only be pre-ordered. My companion and I chose a starter, main and a dessert each with a glass of house red and house white to

complement the meal. Their menu offers a wide variety of British Cuisine with a European influence. The menu includes Pan-Seared King Scallops, Twice Baked Sussex Goats Cheese, Mussels in Cider, Braised Lamb Shank, Fish and Chips in Local Harveys Beer Batter and Roasted Butternut Squash. They have a specials board that offers options for starter, mains and desserts but being limited to how many words I can squeeze in on this page I need to be brief but let me assure you, the following dishes were very good. I opted for Chicken Liver Paté with Thyme Corstini and Spiced Pear Chutney. The paté was good and found it had a nice little after kick to it. This was followed by Slow Roasted Pork Belly with Savoy Cabbage and Glazed Apple. The Pork just fell apart and very succulent. The Savoy Cabbage and Coarse Grain Mustard Mash complemented the pork well. My companion started with Hand Rolled Duck in a Light Filo Pasty with

a dark Plum dip and would highly recommend it to start. This was followed by a Prime Scotch Fillet Steak Tournedo Rossi, Puff Pastry Croute and Chicken Liver Paté with hand cut Chips.

The steak was perfectly cooked. To finish I had Pear and Ginger Upside Down Cake with Clotted Cream and Maple Syrup – oh that did play with my tastebuds. My companion had the Double Chocolate and Pistachio Brownie and Vanilla Pod Ice Cream that went down really well. The choice for house wines (Castebello) was well selected. Their wine list is extensive offering wine from all over the world. Food: Wide selection of home made quality food. Ambience: Contemporary surrounding offers a great atmosphere yet allowing the conversation to be intimate. Service: Very professional. Value: Two courses and two glasses of house wine, about £30 a head. Extras: Roasting Joints with tasty accompaniments at £9.50 per head on Sundays and a light lunch menu available (Mon-Sat) at £6 per head. Overall: A very nice meal in contemporary surrounds makes this an a lovely restaurant for any celebration.

Brick making in Shoreham T

he roManS InTroduCed brick making into Britain. Their Sussex fortifications and villas were built with bricks and tiles they made in the region Once they had gone however it was not until the 15th century that brick making again became important in Sussex. In those days bricks were only used for building castles and other grand constructions. The bricks for these kinds of buildings tended to be moulded and burned near to the site where they were needed. It was not until the 1800s that brick making became significant as an industry in Shoreham and Southwick. At this time the expansion of Britain’s towns and the growing needs of the industrial revolution meant that many more buildings, from factories to homes were needed throughout the country. Now nearly every parish in Sussex had at least one brick maker’s yard. The raw materials of brick making are clay and sand, and these were readily available in Sussex. In Shoreham and Southwick the alluvial clay of the Adur valley was used to make the bricks. These were then either burned in open clamps or in enclosed kilns, both initially heated by wood fires. Brick maker’s yards were at this time generally quite small and labour intensive. In the countryside the kilns were often to be found on farms, providing an additional source of income for the farmer. In towns, it was brewers or publicans who were often involved in the trade and it was not unusual to find a brickyard operating right alongside a local public house. Sometimes the neighbouring brickfield even inﬂuenced the name of the pub, such as the Half Brick pub, open until recently, on the seafront at East Worthing. In the 1750s, the rapid growth of Brighton as a seaside resort was partly responsible for the rise in the number of brickyards on the South Coast. The demand for elegant town houses by those tempted by the sea’s supposed health-giving properties kept many a brickfield and kiln busy. Unlike the brickyards further inland, those of Shoreham and Southwick did not have a ready supply of nearby timber to fuel their kilns, as forests on the coastal strip

were already in short supply. The answer was to switch to coal to fire both kilns and the open clamps, as coal could be shipped along the coast and landed on the beaches. Thus brickworks were often situated near the coast. A watercolour painting by J.M.W. Turner of Shoreham, painted around 1830 shows a brick kiln near the coast at Portslade. Shoreham harbour was also crucial to the brick makers trade as bricks are heavy and bulky to transport for any distance. Brickworks in Lancing, Worthing and further west shipped their products along the coast to Brighton, landing them in the harbour or sometimes directly onto the beaches. Later, brick makers, John Eade Butt of Littlehampton had a depot at Shoreham Harbour’s Baltic Wharf. To reach other, inland towns, the London, Brighton & South Coast railway carried bricks in long wagon trains. Again, with the advent of the railways, many brickyards were built close the railway stations. Stations, signal boxes and other railway buildings were also a prime user of bricks in the nineteenth century. Later, coke from gas fired power stations, as well as cinders collected from domestic coal fires were also used by the brick makers as fuel. Examples of brick works in our area included a brick kiln near Lancing College Chapel. This was in operation from1868 when the chapel was being built to supply bricks for its construction. It was operated by one of the sons of college founder Nathaniel Woodard. Half a million bricks were needed to build the chapel. In Southwick in the early 1880s the Rock Brick Yard was positioned to the south east of the railway station, and run

by T. Vernon Marsh. Another brick makers dating from the 1830s, was situated on the eastern side of what is now Kingston Lane. John Faulkner owned it during the 1930s, and was an example of one of the many brick makers also supplying beer. There was also a brickfield north of Fishersgate station from at least the mid 1800s, which continued to exist until at least 1903, at which time H. Ockenden was running it. A second brickyard in Fishersgate was north of Fishersgate Road. A brickfield existed in Shoreham on the site later to be occupied by the Swiss Gardens, off of Old Shoreham Road. Indeed the shipbuilder James Britton Balley, who later built the pleasure park in 1838, was listed in the 1820s and early 1830s as the brick maker operating from this site. This brickyard ceased operation with the building of the gardens. Another Shoreham brickworks was situated between Rosslyn Road and Gordon Road. Run by Charles R. Gammans, it was first mentioned in 1898 and continued until the 1930s. Brick making was vulnerable to ﬂuctuations in house building as demand rose and fell. This was caused not only by economic conditions, but in the early 20th century, the two World Wars had a big impact on the trade. During both wars brick making all but ceased. The reduction in available manpower after the Second World War meant that the small, labourheavy local brickyards were no longer economical as employment costs rose. While the larger scale industrial brick works prospered and continued to trade, the small local ones disappeared permanently from Shoreham and Southwick. To advertise call: 01273 452065

The Summer Garden a

T laST The gardening year seems to be well under way, with evidence of growth everywhere. The spring bulbs such as daffodils have been slightly later this year, but they seem to have all come at once, giving a wonderful display of colour and making those gloomy winter months seem a long way away. Roll on summer! Many gardens have ponds in them and at this time of year they need a bit of attention to help keep them at their best and also to help look after the wildlife in and around the pond. Many of the visitors such as frogs and toads will be of great benefit to controlling pests in the garden. If the pond has a pump in it, then now is a good time to fish it out and clean the filter on it. Also if there is a separate filter box, then this should be cleaned out. The best way is to use a bucket of pond water to squeeze the filter sponges out in, before re-installing them. If your filter has a uv light then its good practice to change the bulb for the new season. Aquatic planting is also of great benefit to the eco-system of the pond, and now is a good time to get rid or cut back any plants that are taking over and to plant new ones. Remember to use aquatic compost if you do, as normal compost is too rich for the pond balance. If the pond is particularly silted up and dirty it may benefit from a professional clean. 16

It will be interesting to see how the hard winter has affected the ﬂowers in the garden this year. Get plenty of compost into your beds to help with any new planting you are carrying out. As your climbers start to shoot up to the sky, keep them tidy, removing any unwanted shoots and tying them to supports or trellis, to make sure they go where you want them! It should be safe to tidy up and clip any topiary hedges or features such as box balls now, to get them looking their best. In the vegetable garden, you should be staring to see some evidence of growth from those early plantings of potatoes and seeds. Thin out seedlings as they start to appear. It always seems hard to remove them as it feels so wasteful, but it is better to have a good plant, producing well, than two mediocre plants, battling for water and nutrients and under cropping. Set in and around a quaint French village during the late 18th Century, Beauty And The Beast follows the fantastic adventures of Belle, a bright and beautiful young woman who finds escape from her ordinary life and the advances of a boorish suitor Gaston, by reading books. Meanwhile off in a castle in the distance, a cruel young prince is cast under the spell of an enchantress who turns him into a tormented beast and transforms his servants into animated household objects. In order to remove the curse, the Beast must discover a true love who will return his affection before the last petal falls from an enchanted rose. When Belle’s inventor father stumbles upon the Beast’s castle and is taken prisoner, Belle comes to the rescue and agrees to take her father’s place. With the help of the castle’s enchanted staff, she sees beneath the Beast’s exterior and discovers the heart and soul of a human prince.
