Shoreham & Southwick Editor’s comment Hello and Welcome to the September edition of Inside Shoreham and Southwick magazine. Where did the summer go! Alas, it flew by with such speed and I am hoping that the chill of Winter will be kept at bay by an Indian Summer for as long as possible. We have a lot of events happening this month. We have brand new plays by the local dramatic society’s The Barn Theatre with Daphne Du Mauriers haunting Tale, Don’t Look Now and also The Southwick Players Cold Comfort Farm. We have the latest news from our Support Officers in Shoreham on keeping the coastline safe which we can all help with. On the 25th of September the Southwick Community Centre will

be holding a Coffee Morning in support of the Macmillan Cancer Support. It is taking place between 10am and 12 noon and all proceeds go to his worthy cause. Those are just a few of the many events occurring this month in and around the Shoreham, and surrounding areas and our Whats On guide has plenty more for you to look at. Our deadline for the October edition is 12th September. So if you would like to submit any articles we will try to get them into the next edition. Until October and warm regards, Angela

Bonfire Society needs your support

T

he newly-formed Shoreham Bonfire Society will be staging a public bonfire and firework celebration this year on Saturday November 13th. They hope to re-live the enormously successful Beach Dreams Bonfire that was held until three years ago. They recently held a successful fundraiser and now have full insurance and first aid cover and plans have been approved. Full details will be in the Press nearer the time. So far so good but they still need to raise £2500 for a really good firework display. This event will be entirely free to the public, but they are asking for donations to ensure a really great night for our community. A donation of £10 gives a year’s membership to the Shoreham Bonfire Society or a family membership is £25: members have a say at monthly meetings; receive a regular newsletter; appear in a supporters/ sponsors publicity leaflet; appear on a supporters/ sponsors page on our website; be entitled to form a parade at our own bonfire in a fancy dress theme to be agreed; guest at other bonfires (we have already been invited to parade at Littlehampton Bonfire); receive a badge (!). Please have a look at their website www.shorehambonfire.co.uk where you can make a donation and sign on to receive their newsletters. They also need support for their next fundraiser which will be a Race Night, Raffle and Auction to be held in Buckingham School hall on Saturday 18th September, doors open 7.00pm This will be great fun, not using films, but their own 'racetrack' with cash prizes for winners and valuable prizes for winning racehorse 'owners'. If you haven’t been to one of these before, don’t worry, it’s very easy to play. Tickets £5 will be available from Beach House Bar and Restaurant, and Toast by the Coast, both in East Street, Shoreham. Bring your own drink and food, nibbles provided. If you have any prizes or want to pledge a promise to auction, please contact them via the website. Regular Bonfire Society meetings are held, and it would be great to have more support! They need people with ideas and commitment to take the Society forward. The September meeting will be Tuesday 21st at Beach House Restaurant East Street, at 7pm. Meetings are always over well before 8pm but you can always stay for a drink and chat and meet some new people.

Maintaining a great musical tradition

W

ould you like to sing in a community choir that is part of Shoreham’s rich musical heritage? Shoreham Oratorio Choir performs works in the fine tradition of the classical choral repertory. Recent concert have included Handel’s Messiah, The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins, Haydn’s Nelson Mass, works by Rossini and Berlioz. The 2010/2011 season will include Vivaldi’s Gloria, carols for Christmas and as a joint choir venture the Brahms German Requiem. Claire Cook from independent mortgage and financial advisers Talk Money, gives essential advice

Mortgages – frequently asked questions I

n all of our professions, most of us will find reoccurring issues. In the mortgage world, there are currently a few areas which many people ask about, areas which are misunderstood or cause confusion. Here are some answers to some frequently asked questions.

Portable mortgages Many people are looking to buy at the moment, or to downsize to a smaller property. Remember, even if your loan is portable, if you move house the lender will look at your situation as if you are a new borrower. This means that even if you are taking a smaller mortgage, the lender will look at your income and outgoings, and will apply the current lending criteria. Many people are surprised that this happens, but a portable mortgage just means that you take the terms of your mortgage across to the new property, i.e. the rate and the penalties. It does not mean that you can move around without your lender reassessing your situation. Remember also that lending criteria has tightened, so even though you fitted a couple of years ago, this does not necessarily mean that your lender will lend again in the current climate – my advice is to get some independent advice before you start looking for a new property. Even if your lender cannot help, there may be other lenders who can. For those who can port, it may be a great option especially if you are with a lender who has a low standard variable rate, remember most don’t offer these to new borrowers, but if you are already with a lender you may be able to take the low rate with you – just a thought.

of deposit or equity you have in your property. It is always wise to look at all the different types of rate, then you can make an informed choice as to which one is right for you. Some people are happy to pay a higher rate at outset for the security of a fixed rate, others suit a lower variable rate and are happy to take the chance that there could be an increase. If you would like advice on the above issues, or any other mortgage or financial related matter, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I offer a free initial consultation and independent financial advice. Buy to let mortgages are not regulated by the Finanicial Services Authority. Talk Money is a trading style of Best Practice IFA Group Ltd, which is Authorised and Regulated by the Financial Services Authority. If you prefer to pay a fee for advice this option is available, the exact amount of the fee will depend on circumstances but we estimate it will be 0.5% of the loan amount. Where a rate is quoted the rate will depend on individual circumstances and not all borrowers will qualify for acceptance of the loan (or similar).Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Independent Financial Advice for an Independent You

Self Certification mortgages A few years ago there were many lenders offering self cert mortgages, meaning that you did not have to provide proof of income. The rates were competitive and the lenders very accommodating. Self cert mortgages are now a thing of the past, so if you are unable to prove your income, you may find things difficult. On the plus side, some lenders are happy to take various types of income into consideration, for example Working Tax Credit and even Child Tax Credits. This can assist some people in achieving the loan amount they require. If you are unsure that you can get a mortgage, it is best to seek some advice before you start to look.

Tracker or fixed rates? There is no right or wrong answer to this. It is all down to your own personal situation, loan amount and the amount 6

Sussex Police offer a bike marking identification, for more information contact your local PCSO.

Anto-social behaviour Anti-social behaviour was up over June/ July compared to May, but this is possibly due to the end of Exams and Schools breaking up and also Summer events starting. These figures are, however, lower than June last year and over all anti-social behaviour has stayed below 2009 levels. May we remind all members of the public to call in any antisocial behaviour that they are concerned about so that a complete picture can be built. Green for go in bid to raise £10,000 L

ocal Estate Agents, Jacobs Steel, recently launched a partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support and are hoping to raise £10,000 over the next year. The partnership was launched in March this year when staff across all seven branches went green for the day, sold cakes, held raffles and got customers involved with guessing the number of green sweets in the jar. Jacobs Steel are donating £20 from each property sale to Macmillan and have so far raised nearly £2000! Staff have also been getting involved in a variety of fundraising events such as the Longest Day Golf Challenge, where Directors Ashley Jacobs and Derek Steel, along with 3 teammates each, were sponsored to play four rounds of golf in one day, raising over £4000 and they will be holding a collection as part of the Worthing Birdman Swim on Sunday 15th August. Jacobs Steel are also supporting Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning by providing welcome packs for new buyers over the next 4 months containing a jar of coffee donated by Kenco and some mugs to enjoy a coffee in their new homes. Ashley Jacobs, Director of Jacobs Steel said, “As a local agent that has now been established 25 years, we’d like to give something back to help the people in the areas our offices cover. We also feel that involving staff in fundraising promotes a good team ethic.” Every year, 7000 people in Sussex are diagnosed with cancer, of which around 370 are from Adur alone. Jacobs Steel’s contribution will help Macmillan in achieving its aim of reaching and improving the lives of everybody living with cancer. 12

Macmillan Cancer Support is building an innovative Information and Support Centre for people affected by cancer across Sussex and the charity needs help to raise £3.7m. The Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre in Brighton is a partnership between Macmillan, Sussex Cancer Fund and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. The building has been specially designed by experts and people affected by cancer and will provide specialist information advice and quality resources; welfare benefits advice; counselling services, complementary therapies and much more in a calm, non-clinical environment. Local Macmillan Fundraising Manager, Jenny Tregoning said, “It is so important to have the support of local businesses such as Jacobs Steel. £10,000 will make a real difference to the lives of local people affected by cancer in Sussex and we are very grateful for their support.”

If you are interested in supporting Macmillan, please contact the Sussex Fundraising Team on 01273 746601 and we will be happy to discuss the different ways you can support Macmillan’s work. Southwick Golf Club S

horeham used to be a town with its own golf course. The Southdown Golf Club was originally founded in 1900.It was originally situated on Slonk Hill, with the Golf House at the bottom of New Barn Road. The course was a mile and a quarter north of the Upper Shoreham Road and east of Steyning Road, above where the A27 bypass is now. The course operated from Buckingham Barn until 1903, when a brand new clubhouse opened at what is now the south end of New Barn Lane. This clubhouse was an impressive, purpose-built structure with an attractive balcony looking out over the course. This was the heyday of the Shoreham golf club when its popularity was at its height. With the onset of the First World War the golf course’s days were numbered. By 1914 it was rumoured that an army camp would be built on Slonk Hill, but local residents had no idea of the huge scale of the military operation that would very shortly unfold. The army requisitioned the golf course late in 1914 and trains filled with soldiers began arriving at Shoreham station. Thousands of men marched up Buckingham Road to the Downs where they pitched hundreds of tents on the golf course. These were later to be replaced by huts. The first night of the camp though was chaotic, as not enough provisions had arrived to feed the great number of men. The people of Shoreham generously helped out with donations of groceries however. The purpose built clubhouse of the golf club at the bottom of New Barn Lane became at this time private dwelling, occupied by the local fire chief. It was still though known as The Golf House. After the First World War, attempts were made to re-open the now overgrown golf course, notably in the mid-1920s, but these efforts came to nothing. Finally though a golf new course was laid out and opened in 1935. It was situated at New Erringham, north of where the Holmbush Centre is now. This 1930s version of the golf club used a different building again

14

for its clubhouse. This clubhouse was originally one of the old post houses on what was once the main road between Brighton and Horsham, and as a coaching inn it dated from around 1735. It is then believed to have become the home of a farmer called Richard Sharpe from 1847 to 1866. At the time of the golf course, the once busy road had become a bridleway, which continued to exist until the building of the bypass. The green fees upon the club re-opening in 1935 were 2/6d. per day, 7/6d. a week or £1 a month. The subscription fee for both men and women golfers was set at £4.40 with entrance fees at £3.30. For those on leave from abroad there were special terms available, on application to the club secretary. Non-playing members and those living outside of a 40mile radius were charged a £2.20 subscription. During the 1930s the golf club was mentioned as a selling point for many of the new housing developments being built in the Upper Shoreham Road area. Jack J. Parlett, builder and decorator of Old Shoreham Road offered in an advertisement of this time, “All brick houses and bungalows

now in course of erection. Facing Downs near Golf Links. Five minutes from station and buses”. However with the coming of the Second World War, the golf club was once again forced to close. With the threat of aerial bombardment, playing golf on the isolated Downs was not longer a possibility. In the 1940s the clubhouse of the golf course was used as a nightclub for a time while the Downs were fenced off with barbed wire. The clubhouse eventually caught fire and burnt down during the war and was then used by the army for target practice. After the war the land that had once been the golf course was, like much of the previously open Downland, fenced off, ploughed and used to grow corn, under the directions of the West Sussex Agricultural Executive Committee. Old Shoreham farm took responsibility for the land at this time. With the building of the A27 bypass which opened in 1970 and further building and development on the southern slopes of the Downs, the prospect of there being a golf course at Shoreham again at any point in the future looks unlikely. S

inister things can happen, even in the most romantic of settings. It’s fifty years ago in Venice, when tourists had the place to themselves. But the narrow streets and glimmering canals become menacing at night, when it’s all too easy to miss your way in the shadows and mist. This is the setting for Wick Theatre Company’s production of Don’t Look Now, the classic story by Daphne du Maurier. It is well known from the 1970s film version, which has something of a cult following. But the powerful tale of haunting and imagination is now unfolded in a fascinating stage adaptation by Nell Leyshon. The play is Wick’s entry for this year’s Brighton & Hove Arts Council drama awards. A couple on a short holiday, John and Laura (Guy Steddon and Hazel Starns), are still mourning the death of their young daughter, Christine. At a café, apparently by chance, they meet two intimidating sisters (played by Gill Medway and Diane Robinson). 16

One of the sisters, blind and clairvoyant, claims to have ‘seen’ the little girl sitting happily between her parents at the table. Laura is shocked and elated, while John refuses to believe it. But the possibility of a supernatural presence becomes stronger. The blind sister has more alarming visions and John catches glimpses of danger and faces unknown fears. The ‘local’ characters of Venice include waiters, hotel staff, policemen and street musicians, played variously by David Creedon, Tony Brownings, John Garland and Ray Hopper. The director is Bob Ryder, who builds up the production from its atmospheric beginning to a chilling climax. Performances run from Wednesday 29 September to Saturday 2 October, at the Barn Theatre, Southwick. Time is 7.45pm, tickets cost £9 for Wednesday and Thursday, £9.50 for Friday and Saturday, from the box office on 01273 597094, or online: www.wicktheatre.co.uk To advertise call: 01273 452065

Dry Summer, Dry Garden A

s I write this fresh from my return from the holiday, in the middle of August, the ground is still as dry as ever, with rainfall an almost forgotten feature of the summer, so I hope you are managing to keep on top of the watering. Most people seem to have given up on the lawns, but they will soon come back to life once the wetter weather arrives. Just make sure you keep on top of any weeds that are taking over on the lawns, and give it a cut as soon as they start to green up again. This year they will definitely benefit from an autumn feed, but give it a chance to come back to life first. Even at this stage in august you can see the nights slowly getting longer, and the very first twinges of that autumn feel are in the air if you get up early in the morning. Keep dead heading flowering plants to keep the show going on for as long as possible. As they fade off, cut them back to keep them looking fresh. Any plant material that comes off of them can be put on the compost heap, as can the contents of pots, where plants have given up. As ever in the garden, it’s wise to look ahead, and as we start to move towards autumn, now is the time to start clearing back some of the beds and planting the spring bulbs. These can be bought in most local garden centres, or if you want to try some different varieties, 20

all the seed merchants have a very wide choice on-line. In the vegetable plot it’s now becoming a race against time, to get crops to ripen in the ever decreasing daylight hours. Tomatoes can be helped by cutting whole fruit bearing trusses off and placing on a windowcill, or next to a banana, as the gas it gives off helps to ripen the fruit. Placing cloches over herbs will also help get extra life out of them. Again keep an eye to the future and start planting out the vegetables for the spring, such as spring cabbage, garlic, onions spinach and winter lettuce. Hopefully the fruit trees will be in abundance with crops which should be ready for picking. I always try to save some seeds from things I have grown. This saves a lot of money and is very satisfying. It’s worth leaving bean pods to dry out, and setting aside seeds from tomatoes and peppers and other vegetables. They can be simply dried out on a plate on a window cill, and stored in an airtight container or brown envelope for next year. Don’t forget to label them though! Start looking to limit damage in the garden over the winter, so stake out any trees or bushes that need support, and ensure climbers are well supported on their trellis. Its also a good idea to look at your fences and get any repairs carried out now, rather than after any autumnal

storms have caused the damage. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited
