Welcome to our 2011 Annual Review. The last twelve months have been a busy time for staff and the volunteers, from gardeners to tea ladies and drivers, to the helpers in the many shops we have throughout Kirklees. Despite the many new developments taking place, the staff and all the helpers know they are there for one purpose – to ensure that the care and comfort of our patients is the best that we can provide. It now costs over £12,000 per day to run the Hospice, of which we receive less than £2,000 per day from the Government. The rest comes from donations and fundraising from all parts of the community and via our own fundraising department. We are very grateful for all donations and to the many people who help us from the community.

John Denham Chairman of Trustees

Twenty five years on from the opening of the Hospice, the time has come for us to update and refurbish the original In-Patient Unit. A major operation in terms of organisation and cost, we have appointed architects to develop designs and a programme of works. As if that was not enough, the Government is undertaking a major review of funding in the palliative care sector. The proposals will certainly be foremost in the minds of senior management as they respond to the publications. So, it has been an interesting and busy year for the management and staff. On behalf of the Trustees, I would like to record our sincere thanks to all the staff, volunteers, supporters and everyone who has contributed to the running of the Hospice.

The Kirkwood Team bring a diverse range of skills and experience to the day-to-day running of the Hospice, gained through many years of work, not only in the specialist field of palliative care, but in areas such as finance, education, fundraising, marketing and staff recruitment. Twice named in the Nursing Times top 100 employers of nurses (2005 and 2007) as well as being awarded top small employer of nurses in 2005, the Hospice’s success is founded on a well-balanced mix of longterm professional experience,

combined with progressive thinking and an ability to put new ideas and methodology into action. Each year, our Annual Review gives us a chance to thank you for your support and show how your donations have made a difference to the lives of our patients, their families and carers, helping us to provide the best palliative care that we can offer at all times. Thank you from each of us and from the dedicated staff who support the work of Kirkwood – the Hospice for Kirklees.

Joint Chief Executives Report Over the past year, so much has been subject to review and change by the Government that has the potential to impact on Kirkwood, the services we provide and the funding we receive.

The user forum (renamed ‘What do you think?’) was launched in March 2010 and has grown during the year, with five meetings taking place. We have listened and asked for their help with specific issues including the use of transport, the design of a leaflet to promote the group, car parking on site, staff identification badges and many more small but important matters that often make such a difference at a difficult time. The forum has also agreed to work in partnership with Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust staff to share their experiences whilst in hospital.

Currently, the detail of these changes remains largely unknown, but we have been proactive in the areas that we know will change and await the full implications from the palliative care funding review. The proposed GP consortia for Kirklees are now known and we are keen to engage with them to ensure they understand what Kirkwood offers Kirklees, recognise its value and our willingness to work with them to ensure the best quality end-of-life care is always available.

Christine Springthorpe Director of Clinical Services

Our trading subsidiary, Kirkwood Hospice Enterprises Ltd, began trading on 1 October 2010. All sales of new goods are now made through this company with all profits being donated back to the Hospice. The sale of new goods and other trading activities can thus be expanded to increase our income. Real time feedback from those using our In-patient and bereavement services and Support & Therapy Centre visitors has been encouraging, allowing us to respond quickly to suggestions or concerns directly with the person, so improving their overall level of satisfaction. This method will be further developed next year.

Work has started to consider the refurbishment and extension of the In-patient unit, largely unchanged since its opening in March 1987. Architects have been appointed and consultation has taken place with groups of staff and volunteers and also with users of the service. Our fundraising team will be launching a capital appeal to raise funds for this project and it is hoped to start work in summer 2012. 2012 will also be our 25th anniversary year and a real cause for celebrating all that has been achieved at Kirkwood for our patients and their families over the years.

Hilary Turner Director of Finance & Administration

Delivering high quality care and services requires real team effort. We would like to thank our staff, volunteers and trustees for all their commitment and achievements over the past year.

Medical Director Dr Stephen Oxberry

My first year at Kirkwood has been both busy and enjoyable! As a medical team, we are continually monitoring our practice and have worked hard this year to ensure that we continue to provide a high level of care, particularly in the light of potential changes to the way palliative care is funded. The complexity of diseases, symptoms and treatments is increasing each year and it is important that we maintain and update our skills and knowledge. We have continued working collaboratively with our colleagues in primary and secondary care, which has been made easier with the adoption of an electronic patient record system (Systm One) whereby assessments of patient needs can be shared electronically between the community, Hospice and hospital setting.

approach in the Hospice, of which medical care is but a part. No doubt, the forthcoming year will bring its usual challenges and opportunities and I am keen to build upon the existing work that the medical team is undertaking at Kirkwood.

We are currently developing new initiatives to engage with different groups of patients and carers. We have also been involved in research projects linked to Huddersfield University and I am keen to foster these links further. I have also presented at many local, national and international events, raising the profile of palliative care generally and Kirkwood Hospice specifically. Finally, I would like to thank everyone involved in maintaining the holistic For further information, visit kirkwoodhospice.co.uk

In-patient Unit Gillian Hinchcliffe Senior Sister Last year 312 patients were cared for on the In-patient Unit. The age group varied between 24 and 92 years, from differing religious and cultural backgrounds and all with very different needs. As ever, our philosophy of care is to treat everyone as an individual, respecting their dignity and choices. To achieve this in an ever-changing health care world, nurses working on the In-patient Unit have begun to ‘champion’ areas of care about which they are passionate. They act as role models for the team, providing education and initiating changes to practice that reflect evidence-based care.

Slaithwaite

The nursing team have embraced many changes over the last two years but remain passionate about their work and strive to achieve excellence for our patients and their families.

Some of the areas being championed include nutrition, dignity, prevention of falls and infection prevention and control. The champions are able to influence the way care is delivered, most importantly, ensuring that the patient and their family remain at the centre of all that we do. Last year, Sarah Shaw had a temporary change in role and became the Practice Development Facilitator. This role has now become permanent and will allow her to consolidate the changes to practice that were initiated last year and work alongside the champions to develop and evaluate our practice and care. Sister

The department continues to support and encourage carers and celebrated ‘Carer’s Week’ on 13th June at one of our regular Monday drop-in days. Artists, staff and carers worked on a project which was completed and displayed at our celebratory drop-in day.

The Centre continues to operate a service which provides patients with a dedicated team of regular permanent staff and volunteers, all of whom show their commitment by attending off-site and inhouse educational study time and workshops. The number of new volunteers inducted for duties in the department has increased, along with that of volunteer care and mini bus drivers, enabling the Support and Therapy team to meet the often complex travel needs of our patients. Complementary therapy remains popular, with three new volunteers to cover more appointments made available through the Monday dropin sessions. Patients continue to gain benefit from attending regular daycare, including support from a Multi Disciplinary approach to their care, enjoying art and creative activities, relaxation and complementary therapies to name but a few. Day care also provides a smooth transition to the In-patient Unit for patients requiring closer monitoring of their symptoms and a meeting of their needs through twenty four hour care. New department initiatives include a fatigue management course for patients during their day care day and

Our lymphoedema follow-up clinic was nominated for the ‘British Journal of Nursing, Lymphoedema Award’ and took the title for ‘Key Worker Clinics’ of which we are all very proud. an invitation for community patients to explore ways in which they could best manage their symptoms. The art team are also proposing to run a series of workshops for patients or carers currently struggling emotionally with life-threatening illness. At patients’ request, staff are also planning gentle “chairobics” to encourage relaxation and positive thinking.

In the year ended 31st March 2011, there were 1,661 day attendances

A recent hospice initiative has brought about a ‘Real Time Feedback’ project. Patients, carers and families have been encouraged to provide us with verbal feedback regarding our service, giving the team a truer picture of any aspects

‘The times they are a changing’ As an enthusiastic dynamic organisation, the community palliative care team is busy preparing itself for ongoing success. We work in exciting times, in a well supported environment, where our passions are undiluted by the political events and economic challenges. We are fortunate to have four fulltime Clinical Nurse Specialists in the community team, including new addition Jo Blagbrough. We have seen massive changes to primary care services, e.g. General Practioner (GP) commissioning and changes to district nursing services. The changes within universities have impacted greatly on our education role and plans. Whilst at least 50% of our time is always spent on the most important part of our role, the clinical

work, we contribute hugely to leadership and education across the network. Kirkwood Hospice has very high standards and the community team has a strong voice, ensuring our standards and reputation remain high. The community team also has the responsibility for making decisions on and arranging admissions for patients from across Kirklees. This liaison, whilst often challenging, complex and time consuming, is a crucial part of the job.

We understand that the public perception of the Hospice is often about the building and the beds, although we also know that many people choose to die at home with their loved ones. Our team works closely with GPs, District Nurses and home care workers to help patients live and die at home if that is their preference. We have much to be proud of and even more to be excited about – and we are!

Family Care Team Seamus Nash Team Leader

It has been a time of great change within the Family Care Team. We have two new members of staff; Tracey Addy is our new counsellor and Tracey Lancaster, our administrative assistant. This means that our team has now significantly evolved both in form and character. Recent team achievements include the development and implementation of a new therapeutic bereavement group within drop-in. This has come about as a result of requests from our service

users for a structured counselling group. This new group is an exciting development and we will continue to work in creative ways for the benefit of our users. The team is also in the process of looking at the establishing of a new pre-bereavement group which will incorporate clients from Support and Therapy, our Community Palliative Care team and the Inpatient Unit. This will involve crossdepartmental collaboration which we believe will bridge an identified ‘gap’ in existing provision.

Bluebell woods near Huddersfield

We have also updated our Operational Policy, as well as completing a new bereavement booklet for the Hospice.

Feedback with regards to our services continues to be very positive and the team are working closely with our Quality and Education Manager to develop ‘real time feedback’ of our services. Again, we would like to thank the community of Kirklees for their support, all our volunteers – Mollie, Judith, Lynne, Diane, Geoff, Helen, Joanne, Rita, Rebecca, Christine and Angela for their commitment and dedication, and my colleagues for their energy and enthusiasm. Education Anne Goodlad Quality & Education Manager

A range of education and training sessions are currently being held for our own staff, and volunteers and professionals working in the NHS and private settings. We have recently undertaken a training needs analysis of all of our staff, to better understand any gaps between their current level of knowledge and skills and what is required by the organisation for the future. This information will help the hospice plan future use of resources, make decisions about training needs and prioritise those needs. Our education programme will be developed to ensure their requirements are met over the coming years. The majority of teaching in the hospice is delivered by our own

senior clinical staff. More In-patient Unit staff have been involved in delivering education this year, allowing them to develop their own teaching skills, share their specialist knowledge and promote high quality patient care. Non-clinical personnel undertake a wide variety of activities and receive the education and training appropriate to their role. Shop Managers and drivers have been encouraged to participate in manual handling training specific to their areas, and have been asked to identify new training sessions that would help them in their work.

Welcome to Dewsbury

The volunteer mandatory training updates are also continuing, with

shops also now participating in them. External trainers have supported the education team and facilitated study days for retail, administration, first aiders and maintenance staff. Subjects covered included Human Resources issues, first aid and manual handling for drivers. We also have a number of staff undertaking NVQ and other development courses. Our ongoing partnership with the local authority and NHS Kirklees, has enabled us to continue to deliver our “End of Life Care Education for Support Staff course at the Hospice. Our annual education programme is available on our website www.kirkwoodhospice.co.uk

Premises & Support Services Lyn Banks Premises & Support Services Co-ordinator Planning preventative maintenance for all the equipment at the Hospice and managing three departments certainly means that, for me, no two days at work are ever the same! A few of my many projects over the last twelve months included the installation of new equipment, saving money on current service contracts, office moves and training. Recent additions include a new dishwasher in the kitchen, new sluice room equipment and an upgrade to our external pumping station. I have negotiated savings on several maintenance contracts and fixed them to ensure consistent good value servicing. I have also worked in tandem with our Senior Sister to improve our waste streams, making changes to ensure we are compliant and in the process, reducing costs significantly.

I continue to deliver the fire session at mandatory training and this year helped the Quality and Education Manager to design and deliver driver-specific training. Our 25th Anniversary building project began its planning and consultation

At the beginning of the year I was tasked to move around 13 team members to new office locations. After lots of planning and a rather slow start, the moves went smoothly and with minimal cost and disruption. We re-used all of the furniture and even did some painting ourselves. All clinical staff are now housed together, improving efficiency within the team. For further information, visit kirkwoodhospice.co.uk

Many thanks to all my teams for a great year’s work. Next year will be a challenging and exciting one for us all.

The last 12 months have been challenging, particularly given the current financial climate which is affecting everyone in both their private and working lives. Over 80% of our income still comes from our supporters throughout the community. Despite the ongoing Government funding review into Palliative Care it appears unlikely that we will benefit from an increase in statutory funding anytime soon. However, thanks to our dedicated supporters, the Hospice has been able to continue to care for patients throughout these challenging times and with our 25th Anniversary just around the corner in 2012, we are hopeful that this invaluable support will continue throughout the next 12 months.

Cleckheaton Town Park

We continued to increase the size of our charity shop network in Kirklees with the addition of two new shops in Denby Dale and Meltham. Both have made positive starts and I would encourage supporters to visit them, or their nearest shop and have a look at what is on offer. The quality of items donated is truly amazing and makes a huge difference to the amount of money we are able to raise. We launched a brand new website this year, thanks to the support of Made By Bridge in Huddersfield. The new site is much more user-friendly and interactive, including an online shop, allowing you to apply and pay online for many of our events for the first time. We hope you enjoy it and welcome feedback. The website is unchanged at: www.kirkwoodhospice.co.uk

Once again our lottery membership continued to grow, now exceeding 4,500 players. We have also introduced single play tickets, which are being sold throughout our shop network and at events in Kirklees during the summer. Our first “Bring a Pound to Work Day” to promote our single tickets, was a success, raising over £6,500 and we are planning another one in 2012.

Fundraising Events & Campaigns The King of Rock n’ Roll struts his stuff!

The Fundraising team at Kirkwood runs a series of events and campaigns throughout the year. It costs over £4.2 million every year to maintain services at Kirkwood and with over 80% of this funding coming from voluntary sources, the support of the community is essential if the Hospice is to continue. Last year, Hospice events raised over £300,000 towards patient care.

For the first time, we launched regular skydive events from Brigg airfield. In the last 12 months over 60 people took that brave step out of the plane – freefalling from 10,000 feet, collectively raising over £13,000 for Kirkwood in the process. Given the success of last year, we are arranging several dates again this year and our first date is already fully booked!

Almost 1,000 walkers came together in June to take part in Kirkwood’s annual Midnight Memory Walk. Starting and finishing at the Galpharm Stadium, participants once again had a choice of a 6 or 10 mile circular route. The night was a huge success, raising over £90,000 – the equivalent to over a week of care at Kirkwood! A wonderful, memorable night once again.

Fundraising Events & Campaign 2010 Hospice Parachute Jump

We launched our very first “Bring a Pound to Work Day”, which promoted our brand new Lottery single play tickets. Over £6,000 was raised, with over 130 companies getting involved. We are extending the campaign this year and will be sending tickets to supporters in our autumn newsletter. We will also be working with Pulse Radio to promote the campaign and someone will win a fantastic £3,000 first prize – just in time for Christmas. Another first was our Make a Will Week, which proved a great success. We held drop-in sessions for staff, volunteers and the public for a fortnight in October, held by specialist solicitors from throughout Kirklees. They were able to provide impartial advice and agreed to reducedcost wills for the duration of the promotion. Once again in October 2011, participating solicitors will be drawing up reduced price wills for supporters. To find out more, or for a list of participating solicitors, e-mail Julie Shaw at the Hospice at julies@kirkwoodhospice.co.uk

In the year ended 31st March 2011, over 60,000 Hospice newsletters were mailed out. For further information, visit kirkwoodhospice.co.uk

Kirkwood Hospice Shops Bags for Life. Ideal for a spot of retail therapy!

During the last 12 months, the Hospice opened two new units in Denby Dale and Meltham, bringing the total number of shops to seventeen. Both of our new shops will bring the same good quality range of clothing, bric-a-brac, books, music and DVDs, as the remainder of our network. Our shops’ Gift Aid scheme continues to perform well, with over 7,000 supporters signed up so far, raising over £57,000 in its first full year. This income helped our shops to exceed £1.5 million in turnover for the first time. If you haven’t signed up to our scheme yet, please ask about it next time you are in one of our shops,

especially if you regularly donate items for sale. Our shop in Milnsbridge was shortlisted for the Charity Retail Association’s green award for its “total recycling” scheme. In the past 12 months the shop has reduced its waste production by 95%, through recycling glass, tin cans and metals (which are taken to a local scrap merchant) reusing carrier bags, composting kitchen waste and donating broken crockery which is now used as backfill by a local builder. The shop has recycled over 22,000kgs of rags and books in 12 months. The team has also managed to reduce their energy use in the shop by reducing the thermostat temperature on the heating and adjusting the time at which the heating is switched on. Of the 30 plus volunteers, 85% now avoid using cars and buses to get to work.

As a group, our shops recycled over 250,000kgs of rags in the last year – items which often would otherwise have gone to landfill. The Hospice works hard to recycle and re-use items and is responsible for reducing our reliance on landfill and the damage this can cause to the environment. So, whenever you donate, not only are you supporting your local Hospice, but you are helping the environment too. A huge thank you to all of our shoppers, donors and to the wonderful team of staff and volunteers for all of their hard work and commitment throughout the year.

Volunteers & Hospice Support Groups Judith Robinson Volunteer Co-ordinator Last year the volunteers donated 35,500 hours of their time carrying out a variety of tasks complementing the work of the staff. Forty four new volunteers came on board in the Hospice, whilst the 404 shop volunteers gave over 85,000 hours of support. Kirkwood has 250 regular volunteers assisting with many tasks, which include taking the tea trolley round to patients, visitors and staff, helping with reception duties, bringing patients to and from the Support and Therapy centre and helping within, administration help, collecting goods for our shops and maintaining our beautiful grounds which provide a haven for patients and their visitors. The bi-monthly formal induction, which gives new volunteers information about the Hospice prior to joining us has also been extended this year to include topics such as Health & Safety, spirituality and infection control.

order that we can identify any training needs and use this to better inform our annual mandatory training programme. Many thanks, as always, to every volunteer who gives their time and friendship.

Kirkwood Hospice Support Groups The Hospice has seventeen Support Groups, all regularly involved in organising a variety of events throughout the year. In 2011 alone, they raised over ÂŁ75,000 for patient care.

We continue to forge links with local colleges, enabling older pupils to gain valuable community experience and educating younger people about the work of the Hospice.

We are immensely grateful to all members of our Support Groups, whose pioneering work twenty years ago helped to build the Hospice. Their continual hard work and dedication helps to ensure Kirkwood is there when the people of Kirklees need it most.

We continue to audit our volunteer services and give the volunteers the chance of an annual appraisal in
