New bus route

Get on your bike for Charity T

F

ollowing a recent bus survey, Compass have listened to their customers and produced a revised timetable which now gives a new route linking North Lancing to Lancing Village, Post Office and Station. This is an experimental diversion for the summer period, during which time passenger numbers will be monitored. The last journey back from Worthing has also been brought forward by 30 minutes, now departing the Pier at 17.10. Residents in Lancing can also use the bus to go to Steyning, Upper Beeding and Henfield. Local residents are urged to continue to use the service in order to aid its long-term survival.

Adur Art Collective I

n celebration of Adur and Worthing Councils’ partnership working, this all-new exhibition at Worthing Museum and Art Gallery showcases Adur District artists fresh from the Adur Festival Art Trail. The event runs from 10th July to 2nd October 2010 Cultural Projects - Arts Development, Pamela Driscoll commented “Contemporary, affordable, diverse and unique - just four words capture the essence of up to 80 mixed media works by some 30 local, professional painters and crafts people.” Highlights of the show include joyfully colourful paintings and prints by Shoreham Beach artists Miranda Vincent and Katie Sollohub, alongside Gillian Hill’s mosaics, Tamar Rose’s ceramics and Chris Howitt’s stained glass. Lancing-based Marcus Finch’s pastels, paintings and ceramics combine with Philip de Mazia’s dynamic mixed media sculpture. 2D and 3D are well represented with forms and structures by local sculptors from the City College Brighton and Hove, Northbrook College and Steyning Adult Education taught by Teresa Martin, whose stunning larger scale work can be seen in our Garden exhibition Double Take this summer too! Adur Art Collective at Worthing Museum & Art Gallery really is a rich mix of media and local talent. If you missed the Adur Festival Art Trail or just want to savour it some more, then now is your chance to catch up and you don’t have to walk miles in the heat! Just relax and browse at leisure in the air-conditioned comfort of our Studio gallery.

his September thousands of people throughout the country will be taking up the challenge of organising their own Big Bike Ride and you can join in the fun. The NSPCC is encouraging people get on their bikes and raise money for its Child’s Voice Appeal. The NSPCC Big Bike Ride is an opportunity for anyone to get out and have some fun on their bike this September. It’s easy to take part – simply sign up for your free organisers’ pack and set a date and distance and your set. Your Big Bike Ride can be any distance you wish from a lap of the local park to miles in the countryside – it’s entirely up to you. Ask your friends, family and colleagues to join you and get sponsored to raise money for the NSPCC. All money raised by this year’s Big Bike Ride will go to the NSPCC’s Child’s Voice Appeal. The Appeal will help to expand the NSPCC’s vital helpline services – ChildLine the UK’s free, confidential 24-hour helpline for children and the NSPCC Helpline for adults concerned about a child. Lucy Hale, BIG BIKE RIDE project manager, said: “Organising your own bike ride, could not be easier. People of all ages and abilities are welcome to take part, whether they arrange a bike ride for friends in a local park or a muddy high-energy mountain bike trail in the country. Any distance makes a difference to children and young people who are dealing with the trauma of abuse.” Here’s how sponsorship money could help: • £4 could ensure that, when a child plucks up the courage to ask someone for help, their call can be answered. • £42 could pay for a child who may have nowhere else to turn to receive confidential, one to one counselling about any issue that’s important to them. • £180 could pay a trained practitioner to deliver one day of support through the NSPCC Helpline, to protect the most vulnerable children in society such as babies and toddlers who cannot call for themselves. From April 2008 to March 2009 ChildLine received in the region of 8,000 landline calls from Sussex alone and during the same period the NSPCC Helpline received 1,611 calls from concerned adults.* For more information on organising your own bike ride or joining an NSPCC BIG BIKE RIDE event, visit: www. bigbikeride.co.uk or call: 0845 130 3073. *Please note that landline and payphone calls represent only 24 percent of the calls ChildLine receives and 68 percent of calls to the NSPCC Helpline. Free Nordic walking taster sessions on offer

F

ree Nordic walking taster sessions are on offer in Adur and Worthing this summer. Nordic Walking, sometimes known as Viking Hiking because it came from Scandinavia, is an outdoor form of walking that uses specially designed walking poles. Poles will be provided for the one hour taster sessions. Adur and Worthing wellbeing team have organised the sessions as part of their programme to promote healthy activities and lifestyles. Nordic walking is a great form of exercise and uses 20 per cent more energy because people use the upper body as well as the legs without any noticeable increase in effort and without undue strain to the participant. It is a particularly effective form of exercise for older people who, due to balance and joint problems, and low fitness levels, are often afraid to take up vigorous exercise. The poles provide reassurance and help develop confidence. Also for the first time children over 5ft are being offered the opportunity to come along with their parents or a

6

family member to try the activity out for themselves. Sessions take place : • Adults only Wednesday 28th July 12.30pm to 13.30pm Buckingham Park, Shoreham • Adults only Wednesday 28th July 16.15pm to 17.15pm Sea Lane Café, Goring • Adults only Thursday 29th July 17.45pm to 18.45pm Sea Lane Café, Goring Adults and children over 5ft : • Saturday 31st July 10.45am to 11.45am Sea Lane Café, Goring • Saturday 31st July 12.30pm to 13.30pm Buckingham Park, Shoreham Places will be allocated strictly on a first come first served basis and will also apply for places on the five week courses that follow. To register for one of the free taster sessions listed and an application form please contact : Annabelle Trent, Adur District Council on 01273 263347 or email her on annabelle.trent@adur.gov.uk Living in Lancing • August 2010

Summer Crime Prevention be on a bicycle or moped with little chance of being caught. Cycle crime increases in summer simply because more people use their bikes. Unattended bicycles should always be locked to something solid. Secure the frame and wheels, two locks being better than one.

HOME SECURITY TIPS

I

mproving weather and rising temperatures present criminals with warm weather opportunities. Taking a few simple precautions can reduce the chances of you becoming a victim of a summer crime. In summer there is normally an increase in burglary via open or insecure windows. Naturally we like to ventilate our homes. Burglars exploit open windows, often while householders are asleep upstairs or even when they are just in the back garden. We encourage people to fit and most importantly, use good locks on downstairs and accessible windows. “Accessible window” means one that is relatively easy to climb to, for example, above a ground floor extension or porch, or next to a drainpipe. Traditional sash windows can be secured by fitting two pairs of sash stops to the upper frame. The lower pair locks the window shut, but can be removed to allow a 6-inch gap for ventilation; the upper pair prevents the window being opened further. Ask a Neighbour to keep an eye on your house while you are away, be prepared to return the favour. When parking your car, try not to leave valuables, including sunglasses on display, especially “designer” makes. Encourage visitors to do the same. Whilst driving in slow traffic, remember that handbags, phones etc on seats could be grabbed through an open window. The offender might

8

There are plenty of ways that you can protect your home from being targeted for crime. Read some of our tips for a few ideas. • Always lock the door and close the windows when you go out, even if you’ll only be out for a short time • All external doors should have 3 locking points. Mortice locks will add considerable strength to your door - you can buy them at your local DIY store • Window locks can help to stop people getting in, especially in older windows and windows without double glazing • Use deadlocks if you have them they make it harder for thieves to get out again • If you are thinking of PVC or metal framed doors/windows, make sure they come with good built in locks and a fitted chain, as these can be expensive to add afterwards • Patio doors should have special locks fitted to the top and bottom – ask your DIY store for advice • Don’t leave spare keys outside or in a garage or shed. Keep garden sheds and garages locked and think about using a battery-operated alarm • Keep car and garage keys out of sight in the house • Don’t leave window and door keys in their locks • Always draw your curtains at night and make sure valuable items cannot be easily seen from outside • Use timers for lights and radios if you will be out of the house overnight. They create the impression that

someone is at home. It is not recommended to use TVs for this purpose • Visible burglar alarms, good lighting and security lighting can be deterrents. Particularly ensure that recessed areas and doorways have good security lighting. Make sure that lights don’t disturb your neighbours and that alarms turn off after 20 minutes • Walls and solid fencing around your house may let a thief break in without being seen. Trees and shrubs can also be hiding places. Chainlink fencing or trellises with prickly shrubs can be a better compromise • Make sure that garden tools or ladders that could be used to force entry into your home are not left lying around • Fit a ‘spy hole’ so that you can see who is at the door. Also have a door chain so that you can open the door a little way to talk to visitors • Mark your belongings with a property-marking product • Neighbourhood Watch and other ‘watch’ schemes are excellent ways for communities to fight burglary • NB. Make sure that any security improvements you make to your house don’t stop you getting out as quickly as possible if there is a fire * Source: www.crimestoppers-uk.org

Stunning

Summer? U

nless things have changed dramatically between the time I’ve written this and you read it, we have had a wonderful summer so far, more than making up for the harsh winter. It has been very dry however and many plants and trees are suffering, regardless of size or type. In order to get the best from them it is essential to ensure that they get a good watering on a regular basis. It’s a good idea to make use of any rainwater storage you have as well as the hosepipe. Don’t be afraid to make use of washing up water as well. Many plants prefer rainwater over tap water. If watering is a problem due to time restraints or size then it is worth considering installing an irrigation system. Small DIY kits can be bought online or from most garden centers. Alternatively you can have systems professionally installed, which are relatively simple and inexpensive. Whatever you do though, keep watering! If you enjoy your vegetable gardening, then this time of year can’t be beaten. It’s a time when you can enjoy the fruits of your hard work from earlier in the year. Try to keep on top of picking the produce such as beans, courgettes, peas etc to ensure that more are produced so you extend the growing season. As the vegetables are in abundance, so are the pests and diseases, so keep a watchful eye out for the usual predators such as slugs and snails, but also the diseases like Living in Lancing • August 2010

blight on the tomatoes. At any sign of it get rid of the affected fruit to save the rest of the crop. You can extend the range of produce you grow by sowing quick crops in any spaces that become free such as lettuce, salad leaves and radishes. It’s also a good time to start preparing for winter by looking at crops that can be sown now to produce something to brighten up the winter and early spring days. A thumb through one of the many seed catalogues should inundate you with ideas of what can be grown, but one tip is to plant potatoes now in time for the Christmas dinner! It’s a lovely time of year to spend relaxing in the garden, which should be full of summer blooms and shrubs. A few minutes here and there spent removing dead flowers from plants, will encourage it to produce more blooms as well as keeping the garden looking at its best. Have a look at any climbers you may have and give them a helping hand by training them to where you want them to go. Blooms in hanging baskets and any pots or containers will benefit greatly from a boost of a good feed. Place in some slow release pellets to help. As always with gardening it’s a case of enjoying what you have now and keeping one eye on what you want to do in the coming seasons. As well as planning the next lot of vegetables, start thinking about any spring bulbs you may want to order as most suppliers will have catalogues available

now. Its also a very good time to start thinking ahead for any projects you may want to do in the garden, such as paving or redesigning areas. Whilst autumn and winter may be a good time to do them, now is a good time to call in a professional to get advice and a quote before they become booked up for that period. Getting mobile!

The Shoreham training group

O

lder people in Adur are invited to come along and learn how to manage their mobile phones with the help of popular new courses organised by the Adur Older Persons’ Network. From the basics such as making phone calls or understanding contract and pay-as-you-go deals, to texting and getting to grips with menus and symbols, these small group workshops aim to improve safety amongst older people and give them the confidence to participate more fully in the digital age. The first round of courses have already been held in Shoreham, Southwick and Lancing throughout June and July, subsidised thanks to

12

Trainer Ray Gibson with Benda Osbourne

funding from the Eileen and Derek Dodgson Foundation, and have met with a very enthusiastic response from participants, from first time mobile owners to regular users. Brenda Osbourne who attended the Lancing course said although she had owned her mobile for a few years already she had found the course

very useful. She said: “I can do things quicker now and have learnt things which I didn’t know”. Michael Black who also Assistant trainer Phil Hodges with Brenda attended the course in Lancing, said he and his wife had just bought a phone that week for emergencies and he had come along to learn the basics. He too felt he had learnt a lot . Course trainer, Ray Gibson, who has been taking the workshops said: “Many older people buy phones or are given them by younger relatives for emergencies but may only have limited knowledge of how to use them, other than for dialling known numbers or receiving calls.” He went on to say: “It’s about demystifying technology and including people. A lot of older people are being left behind by technology.” Brenda Osbourne agreed, adding: “I think the older generation are scared of them still”. The next courses are planned for August and September. Course fees cost only £5 per person, covering the two workshop sessions and refreshments. Please contact Val Garland or Pam Simons on 01273 900453 for further details. Living in Lancing • August 2010

International Birdman event takes flight T

he Worthing International Birdman event is a competition for human powered flying machines that take off from a special ramp constructed on Worthing Pier. There are three flying classes so prospective entrants can decide if they wish to be a serious aviator or want to take part for fun and raise money for charity. The great news is that the Worthing Birdman is free to spectators and will provide a great days entertainment so make sure its in the diary !! The Birdman is a flight competition for human powered flying machines held each summer in the picturesque seaside town of Worthing on England\’s South Coast. This event brings thousands of visitors to Worthing over the weekend, gaining both national and international publicity. In total there will be 48 brave aviators throwing themselves from a specially constructed platform on Worthing Pier with many of them attempting to fly over 100m and the possibility of winning the jackpot of £30,000. This year there are 8 specially designed Leornardo da Vinci Class entrants; these are craft designed and built to 14

be aerodynamic and hopefully achieve the 100m challenge distance. There are also 8 Condor or modified hang gliders entered; at the moment a Condor pilot holds the Birdman flight distance record but will this change in 2009? These craft will have an opportunity to fly for the jackpot on both the Saturday and Sunday. The remainder of the contestants will be flying in the Kingfisher class on Sunday 23rd only; these are the fun flyers who will dress to impress and will make a real splash on the day! Look out for a Crocodile, Inspector Gadget, and the Hobbit from Lord of the Rings along with many more fantastic designs. If you really wanted to enter but have missed the deadline there is still an opportunity to be our benchmark competitor on Sunday 23rd. The benchmark flyer will launch themselves from the pier without any aids and will set the distance that the other competitors will need to achieve to earn their wings for flying. To find out more go to www. worthingbirdman.co.uk. Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th Aug 2010 Seafront, Worthing. Flights take off from The Pier from about 12.30pm each day. Paddle round the pier S

urfboards, Sailing, SUPs, Canoes, Ocean Skis and Wakeboards add to the fun at Paddle Round The Pier. This year’s Paddle Round The Pier Beach Festival plays host to some fantastic water-based events, all helping to raise thousands of pounds for three deserving charities. The action kicks of for professional paddleboarders early on the Saturday morning with the Funky Puffin Euro Enduro SUP race. A gruelling 20 mile stand-up paddle to Worthing Pier and back - seeing competitors from across Europe and beyond. Another race for watermen (and girls) is the Errant Surf Holidays Pier2Pier challenge. This sees both ‘amateurs’ and ‘pros’ paddle from the eastern side of the Brighton Pier across to the west side of the West Pier – a tough paddle of over 2 miles against the current. Also a favourite with the crowds is the ‘Paddle Something Unusual’, where teams paddle ‘unusual’ rafts they have built around the West Pier and back. The past few years has seen a floating island, pirate ship, Dodgeball

18

court and even Thunderbird 2! And of course at 2pm on the Sunday it’s the event that started this all back in 1996 – the ‘Paddle Round The Pier’. Hundreds of people will take to the water on surfboards, bodyboards, paddle boards, canoes etc and paddle around the West Pier. Having collected sponsorship money each will make a massive difference to the amount raised for the charities. Other water based events include: the Neilson Sailing Regatta, Inshore Rescue Boats, Outrigger Canoes, The British Ocean Ski Series, Wakeboarding displays and a Fishing Contest (held at Brighton Marina).

If you want to have a go at some sports yourself then you can head to the beach and try out the likes of wakeboarding, kayaking and Stand Up Paddleboarding. Over 40,000 people are expected to attend this year’s event, which takes place on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 July at Hove Lawns in Brighton and is completely free of charge to visit. And organisers are hoping to raise over £30,000 for this year’s chosen charities from donations made by visitors. The charities are the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, SurfAid International and Whoopsadaisy. As well as all of the water activities, there is a lot going on in the ‘Paddle Village’ on Hove Lawns and the promenade next to the beach. Hundreds of stalls, children’s entertainment area, main arena and big top with live bands, plus tons more fun. For more information please visit www.paddleroundthepier.com. St. Mary’s Church, Sompting

C

hristianity was introduced to England by St. Wilfrid in A.D 680 and soon spread through Saxon Sussex. The first churches were built of wood, but as the centuries progressed Saxon stonemasons began to construct churches on sites, which many still occupy today. One church, which still retains some of its origin Saxon features, is to be found on the southern slope of the downs at Sompting. St Mary’s Church has been situated here for over one thousand years. It is world famous because of its striking foursided Saxon tower, which has been called ‘the greatest architectural curiosity in the country’. Stonework in the tower has been dated from before 1000AD and is believed the 25 metre high structure was built in stages, with the second section up constructed around 1050. At the top, the distinctive spire with a roof is a style known as a Rhenish helm, after the river Rhine in what is now Germany. It is the oldest example of this type of spire in England. The continental link is a symbol of the strong links Sussex had with the rest of Europe in 10th and 11th centuries through trade in wool and corn. 22

The tower is 19 square feet in plan and is strengthened at its corners by quoins or cornerstones of rectangular short and long stones. The pilaster strips, or shallow rectangular columns, which run up the centre of each of the tower’s faces, are also indicative of Saxon architecture. It is believed some of the bricks built into the tower may even be of Roman origin. The tower was designed for four bells and it is known that there was that number present until 1724. Currently the tower has two bells. The larger bears the inscription Jno. Rudhall, Gloucester 1795 and the smaller I.W. 1723, though it is known it was brought to St Marys in 1898. The South Transept of St. Marys was the Templars private chapel, built in the 12th century. Many of the carved stones in the walls of the church are believed to date back to Saxon times. The nave of the church dates from the eleventh century, with the northern and southern transepts being constructed a century later. The Knights Templar were granted patronage of St Mary’s in 1154, which allowed them to influence the choosing of its priest. The Knights Templars were a military religious

order recently brought to prominence by the best-selling novel ‘The Da Vinci Code’. Founded by the Crusaders in Jerusalem around 1118, their roles were to defend the Holy Sepulchre and Christian pilgrims. When the Templars were suppressed and dissolved in the 14th century, the Knights Hospitaller or Knights Of St. John of Jerusalem as they were also known took over their influence St Mary’s. They were an order originally formed to aid the sick on pilgrimages to the Holy Land and also took on military duties. The church’s current function room is on the site of the Knights Hospitaller’s chapel. An empty tomb and coffin lid found on the site were probably those of Knight Hospitaller William Hyder who died in 1524. Around a doorway in the navel is a carving of Christ carrying a book along with emblems representing the four evangelists. 700 or 800 years old, it is possible that they originated from an old church at Selsey that is now under the sea. The font at St Mary’s also dates from the 12th century bowl made from Sussex marble. Around the piscine is carved interlacing strap work and foliage. The Easter Sepulchre in the North wall of the Chancel is the carved tomb of Richard Burre, who died in 1527. Here there is also blocked arch dating from the 13th century. Possibly it contained a ‘leper’s squint’ where those unfortunate sufferers of leprosy could watch the service separated from the congregation, or perhaps, near as it is to the altar it was a door for the use of a priest. Other noteworthy features of St. Mary’s, Sompting include reused stones in the sanctuary, carved by Saxon craftsmen. Here too are impressive windows showing the three kings at Bethlehem and Christ among the doctors. Although some of the church has had to be been restored or replaced over the years it is still a very impressive building with fine historical features. Judy Upton Living in Lancing • August 2010

Shoreham Airshow 2010 S

horeham Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) Airshow being held on 21st and 22nd August at Shoreham Airport welcomes the return of the Harrier Display. Last seen in 2006 doing its full display the Harrier has recently been involved in Middle East duties. This year it will be doing very few public displays. The organisers of the RAFA Airshow were delighted when they heard that it will be returning to do its tactical role demonstration which will show the capabilities of this amazing and proven aircraft. It will be based at Shoreham for the weekend. A return also of the Hawker Hunter (Miss Demeanour) flown by Jonathan Whalley in its wonderful colour scheme will delight many fans of this aircraft which has a proven track record with many air forces in the world. Jonathan has perfected his display with this fast jet so you will be in for a few surprises from this aircraft which set the Absolute Speed Record of 727.6mph off the Sussex Coast in 1953. The RAF Hawk will once again be back and will be doing its solo display in a stunning new colour scheme. It is a very fast and manoeuvrable aircraft and will be put through its paces by Flt Lt Tom Saunders from RAF Valley. It is also the aircraft flown by the Red Arrows display team. The organisers decided to add a few more jet aircraft this year so they have added two Folland Gnats to the display schedule which was the mount for the Red Arrows up to 1979. The late Ray Hanna was well known for his handling of this aircraft at some very low altitudes when he led the Red Arrows. It is also a welcome back the De Havilland Vampire T11 which is always popular for those with cameras along with the Kuwait Air Force BAC167 Strikemaster flown by Tom Maloney who runs the aviation company Transair which is based at Shoreham. There are some more surprises to be announced nearer the event so keep your eyes on the new airshow website http://www.shorehamairshow.com for all the latest news. “With the centre piece being the Battle of Britain Scenario

24

which features an airfield attack and a scramble by Spitfire and Hurricane Aircraft this year will see a lot more activity centred on this section. More role play actors, vehicles, and pyrotechnics will bring back the true feeling of what it was like seventy years ago at a front line airfield ‘somewhere’ in the UK,” said Airshow Press Officer John Periam. With a total of over 30 flying displays featuring around 60 different aircraft lasting for almost six hours non-stop action. Now one of the most popular family airshows held in the UK there will be lots taking place on the ground to keep one entertained from a fun fair, trade stands, craft tent through to opportunities to meet the many service personal from all three armed services along with many of the static aircraft on show. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will be flying both days along with the USAF Bomber Sally B and the return of the Catalina Flying Boat all of which played an important role during World War Two. There will be other aircraft from this era flying alongside some of these aircraft. There will also be ample opportunities to see some of the UK’s best civilian aerobatic display teams including the Blades Aerobatic Team made up of all Ex Red Arrow Pilots in their new RAFA colour scheme for this season along with the Brietling Wing Walkers, Yakovlevs and The new Pitts Duo team. A surprise visit by a popular team will be announced prior to the airshow to launch the 2010 RAFA Wings Appeal. An exciting two days is planned with more to be announced. Additionally the ticket prices the same as 2008 and these can be booked on the ticket hotline 01903 282354. With over £1,500,000 raised for RAFA from the Shoreham Airshows it is hoped that this year’s event will be the best to date to celebrate this important milestone in British History and the memory of those who gave their lives during the Battle of Britain. The organisers look forward to seeing you at the Airshow on the 21st and 22nd August 2010. Living in Lancing • August 2010

With a bit of imagination virtually any container can be used for growing things in. Just make sure there are some drainage holes, a bit of gravel in the bottom and some decent compost in there. I’ve even seen old wellies used to grow vegetables in. If you’ve got limited space, give it a try, there’s nothing better than taking some fresh food from the garden straight to your plate. Its also a wonderful activity to get the children involved in One thing that has been noticeable about the weather since Easter is that it has been very dry, with only a few sporadic bouts of rain. (I do not accept any responsibility if you are now reading this article in a torrential downpour as the wet weather has set in for the summer!)The ground is quite dry so make sure you look after any new plants or grass to allow their root systems to establish and not dry out. Water before a plant starts to droop to avoid cell damage to the plants structure which can weaken it. This time of the year is when you win or lose the battle with the weeds. It seems they sprint off well before any seedlings you have planted and are 2 feet tall before you have turned your back. The easiest way to get rid of them is to use a hoe, especially while the ground is dry. Few weeds will survive once they have been regularly hoe’d. It’s a lot easier and quicker to do this now then spend hours once they have taken hold. Not only that they will have had time to spread their seeds and so you will have created a legacy of work for next year. Mark Oakley, Any Garden Limited
