This season, you would be forgiven for not knowing whether to be in bold prints, white-washed denim or jumpsuits. It seems that this year, fashion trends have gone into overdrive as we see a surge of looks hit the high-street.
t
o help us with all our confusion, Pukka turned to style-guru and body shape expert Nicky Hambleton-Jones to help aid us in our quest for fashion enlightenment. As the face of Transition Lenses, Clairol Root Touch Up, the Style Adviser for Freemans catalogues and a lady who is viewed as the UK’s leading personal styling and lifestyle transformation expert, there really is no one better than Nicky to talk about style and the latest looks. Nicky, its fabulous to talk to you because we admit we are getting blown away with the eclecticism of trends this season, the choice is endless. For novices like us what are the easiest items to adapt into our wardrobes?
The great thing about this season is that yes its manic but there is a lot of repetition. So you can use the pieces you bought last season. Safari and tribal have carried themselves over from last year and Nautical is still big though its more washed out and stripes are larger. Really, anything goes so just pick out the pieces you already have and introduce the key elements of this seasons such as the acid brights, electric blues, big bold prints and silk scarves. The main thing is to mix and match because these trends are to be explored and made individualistic. You mentioned bright colours and blues, are those the key colours we should be wearing?
Orange and blue are everywhere as is fuchsia and they are the main colours. Again its about mixing it in with what you have. Such as wearing a bright orange top under a tailored blazer or wearing an electric blue dress with a tassel handbag.
nicky hambleton4 March 09 pukka
There has been a lot of emphasis on floral patterns yet how do we wear them without looking too mumsy?
It’s good to team up the feminine trends with chunky wooden bangles, wedge sandals, they add a tougher tone to the look. A leather or masculine cut jacket also works really well to give it an urban edge. You are an expert on body shapes how can particular shapes wear certain trends?
The thing about body shapes is that you want to pull attention to your best features. If you are a pear shape then you want to draw attention away from your hips and thighs and its good to wear ruffles and bold prints on top and to wear a good pair of fitted wide-leg or boot cut jeans. If you are an apple shape and so your tummy is your biggest part then you can wear the feminine floral dresses that skim your tum, under a fitted jacket. Just make sure you highlight your favourite areas. What pieces would you suggest are the musthaves from the Freemans range?
They have an amazing leather brown crop jacket with cut away detail which again is great for roughing up the feminine trends and it has a gorgeous fit and will be something that stays in fashion for a long time as its always cool and can be accessorised with scarves and soft print dresses. Finally then, what are the staples that every woman should have this season?
A great jacket is a must because you can bring it out every season and it toughens up prints. Also sequins surprisingly are still in. Usually they are huge around autumn and winter but we are seeing them run straight through to summer which is perfect as every girl needs a party dress which you can dress up or down and can be used all year round. Its best to remember to choose the pieces that you like, don’t focus on having to wear a particular trend because looking like you came straight off the catwalk can be seen as trying to hard. Be individual.

Lisa attended the practice because she was embarrassed about her smile. She has slightly crooked, overlapping teeth. We discussed various treatment options, and Lisa decided to have 10 upper veneers placed, and tooth whitening on her remaining teeth. The end result was a straighter, whiter, more even smile.

ormandy Barracks is probably the largest driving training school in the world for the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Marines. It provides 95 different courses and at anyone time, they are able to train up to 1,250 personnel. Its difficult to explain the full scope of courses offered or the amount of personnel that pass through the Barracks every day yet even though it operates on such a large scale, DST (Defence School of Transport) are active environmentalists, working closely with conservation groups and planting 50 acres of trees since 1997.
I arrived at the barracks and was met by Terry Cavender, the unit press officer who was the very epitome of nice. He handed me a uniform and quickly briefed me about the day ahead. Stepping out in combat gear, I felt like I could take on the world though Terry was quick to mention that I might not be smiling quite so much when I saw the vehicles that were ready to take on me! Heading further a-field, I met with an array of army officials and was greeted with such enthusiasm that all fear quickly vanished and I was shown around each vehicle and given an in-depth run-down on their uses. pukka March 09 11

THE JACKAL: A 12 tonne open top unit, operated by Sgt Joey Davis and Sgt Ben Budd, carries a 3 man crew and gets to 80mph. Just sitting in it and viewing the world from that height was a little terrifying. THE MASTIFF: Not to be considered lightly because of its dubious name, weighing in at 23,000 Kgs when laden, this is one big and sturdy mean machine that makes room for no-one. Sitting in the commanders seat, feeling very small, I was amazed at how much this vehicle was based on communication between Sgt Morris-Roe and Sgt Thomson. Because it is a protective patrol vehicle, it is armour plated meaning that line of sight is very restricted. Cameras situated all around the vehicle and linked to two inside monitors in front of the driver and passenger, give sight but it’s a tricky beast to operate and communication must be quick and accurate at all times especially when in the dark and only the cameras offer vision. THE VECTOR: This “little” runner, driven by Sgt “Nutty” Edwards, gave us all the thrills of an Alton Towers ride as we powered around the course, completing hills and dirt tracks and hurling through watery ravines. It carries 7 people and is used as a clean up vehicle after the heavier units have been in.
of control. I got the chance to try out this new knowledge that in theory was easier enough, the reality proved very different and I tested everyone’s nerves to the extreme.
THE SKID-CAR TRAINING: Taken for a spin by Darrin Dobson and shown the many manoeuvres undertaken to prevent losing control of you vehicle on ice, water or if certain sets of wheels give out on you. The exercise had us clinging to our seatbelts as we were shown the full effects of losing grip and then we were shown how to steer into skids to prevent loss
The end of my experience came too soon and I found myself at a loss for words when I met with Commandant Colonel Paul Brook, another wonderfully courteous person. It was difficult to describe to him the best part of day as I had learnt so much from just one session with some of the most congenial people I have ever come across. All of them had such great devotion to their work and everything they told me, was done with such enthusiasm. It is difficult to believe that behind their fervent exterior, these men have fought in wars. They have been apart from their families and have fought for their country with no questions asked. I was fortunate to see such a small part of the forces but it was an inimitable experience.

28 March 09 pukka
chocolate and pear tart Serves 4 to 6 (Remember, you can always cheat and buy ready-made pastry!)
ingredienTS • a pack of ready-made shortcrust pastry • 125g ground almonds • 2 large free-range or organic eggs • 125g butter, softened • 95g caster sugar • 185g dark chocolate, melted • 3 conference pears, peeled, cored and quartered • crème fraîche, to serve Preheat the oven to 190°C/375°F/gas 5. Roll out the pastry until ½cm thick and use it to line a 24cm tart tin. Leave in the freezer to rest for at least 20 minutes, or longer if you can.
Cook on a preheated ridged griddle pan or in the oven. Slap the cutlets with the heel of your hand to flatten them slightly. Then bash up your thyme and add a little olive oil. Mix together, then rub the oil over the cutlets and season both sides of them. Put to one side. Cook the mushrooms dry on the bars of your hot griddle pan. Just grill them on both sides to mark them and put them into a large bowl. Once the mushrooms are done you can put the lamb in the oven or on the griddle pan. If the cutlets are about 1.5cm (3/4
inch thick), just give them 3 or 4 minutes on each side until they’re really golden. This should cook them medium. When cooked, put the lamb cutlets into the bowl with the mushrooms and drizzle with a little olive oil. Tear over the parsley, in quite large pieces, and add a good squeeze of lemon juice. Season lightly and toss around. Place to one side to rest, to allow all the lovely juices to get sucked up by the mushrooms. Meanwhile you can make a really quick sauce.
Pound up the pine nuts until you have a mushy pulp – this will give the sauce a creamy flavour and texture. Remove the mixture to a bowl, then bash the basil up into a pulp. Add this to the pine nuts and loosen with extra virgin olive oil so that the sauce easily drops off the end of a spoon. Now you need to balance it with quite a lot of balsamic vinegar to give it a good zing, almost like a mint sauce, but add it to taste. Give the lamb and mushrooms a final toss. Serve up and have the sauce and a simple watercress salad on the side.
Bake the pastry blind for around 10 minutes in the preheated oven, then remove, set aside, and reduce the oven temperature to 170°C/325°F/ gas 3.Mix your almonds, eggs, butter and sugar together and stir in the melted chocolate while it’s still warm. Pour the mixture evenly into the pastry case and then press the pears into the chocolate and almond mixture. Bake the tart for 45 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and the chocolate and almond mixture is firm. Serve warm with crème fraîche.

lovely compliment to have. What is the worst and the best thing about being famous?
The worst thing is def having to wear make up all the time, we can’t go out looking normal and have to be made up. But the best thing is that fact that we get recognised for what we do. You have just done the new single for Comic Relief, how was that?
It was amazing, its out on the 2nd March so still a long wait but it was really good to do it. Our promotional tour had us visiting projects that the money would go to. Whenever people mention you, they always talk about your style and the quirky colours that you use, how did that come about?
It was thought up between our stylist and ourselves and it was originally a one-off thing but it caught on and we experimented with the tights and coloured dresses and it keeps us unique and individual. I suppose now, you get given a lot of clothes, what are your favourite shops and designers?
On the high-street, I would definitely say Urban Outfitters and Zara but for labels I would choose Chanel and Stella McCartney, I could go on as the list is endless. All of you girls are really close, does that help in the music business?
It really helps because we were close friends before and especially when we are away from home too. We keep each other grounded and also rely on our family and I rely on my boyfriend. Up to this point, what has been the most exciting thing about being a part of The Saturdays?
Comic Relief! That has been the biggest thing and the most amazing venture yet. Ok, we have a quick-fire round to test you!
Flats or Heel? Always heels! Nights in or nights out? That’s really difficult because I like them both and it depends who I’m with. If its with the girls then definitely a night out! High street or Couture? I know I can’t afford Couture but I’d choose that! Late nights or early mornings? I’m actually an early morning girl (Very brave!) A guy who makes you laugh or a guy that looks good? I’d say a guy who makes me laugh is much better.
