Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design
Many congratulations to Richard Quinn who received the inaugural Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design from Her Majesty The Queen at the end of his spectacular London Fashion Week catwalk. It was the first time Her Majesty The Queen had attended London Fashion Week and, from the VIP front row alongside British Fashion Council CEO Caroline Rush CBE and US Vogue Editor Dame Anna Wintour, enjoyed Richard’s collection which featured a top to toe mix of vibrant florals and patterns on velvet, linen, lycra, foil and pleated chenille. The whole collection was printed in Richard’s London studio using Epson digital printers on fabric supplied by Premier Textiles. Customised boots, shoes, bags and full-length gloves completed the look, with motorbike helmets wrapped to match by Slam Signs — again using Epson
technology. The new award recognises the role the fashion industry plays in society and diplomacy and will be awarded annually, presented by a senior member of the Royal Family, to an emerging British fashion designer of womenswear, menswear, or accessories that show exceptional talent and originality, whilst demonstrating value to the community and/or strong sustainable policies. Richard is recognised for his exceptional prints and subversive spin on vintage styles and his Epson-equipped print studio also offers affordable print services to design students and other emerging designers. At the event Richard thanked his family, friends and all those who have supported him. To Epson he said: “Thank you for believing in my vision of the studio. The constant dialogue and passion for development really excites me and educates me and my team each season.” “It’s really inspiring to see how Richard explores the power of Epson digital printing and we are extremely proud to be working with him. This award is a great accolade and recognises Richard and his team’s dedication, creativity and hard work,” says Heather Kendle, Market Development Manager, Epson Europe. www.epson.co.uk
Vivid Matrix Lamination System Improves Efficiency Northampton based printers, Twenty10 Digital, recently purchased a Vivid MATRIX MX-370P Foil and Lamination system along with an OmniFlow Deep Pile Digital Feeder. The MATRIX MX-370P is part of the award-winning range of modular lamination and foiling solutions for sheets of up to SRA2 offered by Vivid Laminating Technologies Ltd. The new OmniFlow Digital Deep Pile Feeder can be retrofitted to any MATRIX PNEUMATIC laminator enabling the easy upgrade of existing manual fed machines saving thousands of pounds compared to replacing a complete system. Twenty10 Digital had identified the need for an auto-feed solution to help with increased customer demand for longer print runs. Having looked at other available systems, Twenty10 Digital staff visited Vivid’s head-quarters for a demonstration of the MATRIX MX-370P with OmniFlow feeder. They were impressed by how easy the MATRIX was to set-up and run meaning that any member of their team could operate it with minimal training. Twenty10-Digital also recognised not only how much faster they could laminate and foil using the auto-feeder but also that the system could be left to run autonomously, freeing-up operators to work on other jobs. “We visited Vivid’s showroom and they really took time out to show us the capability of the Matrix; we were impressed. The PNEUMATIC system on the MATRIX allows a fast run speed, whilst the accurate temperature control chip ensures a quality and consistency of finish that is secondto-none. The range of lamination, foil and Spot UV type effects the system enables in-house will help us add value to our customer’s print requirements.” said managing director, Paul Riley. Speaking about the OmniFlow Deep Pile Feeder, Riley added “We really liked the long sheet capability and the simple set-up of the digital feeder. The efficiency savings the feeder offered were immediately obvious; not
only could we complete customer jobs in less time, but we wouldn’t need to stand over the machine whilst it was running either, it was almost a no-brainer” www.vivid-online.com

Mimaki appoints Signmaster Shropshire-based Signmaster Systems has been appointed an authorised reseller for Mimaki’s wide format sign and graphics product range by Hybrid Services. Following their purchase of the long-established business, new owners, Lucy Ratcliffe and Samantha Kehoe have instigated a renewed focus on hardware sales and support, setting up the opportunity to represent the Mimaki brand. “Becoming a Mimaki reseller again was the first item on our wish list when we bought Signmaster,” says Lucy. “Sam and I had Mimaki machines when we first started our print business. We believe in their quality and wanted to start offering them to our customers again and we were truly delighted when Hybrid felt the same.” Boasting an enviable showroom along with training and warehouse facilities, the business has a substantial customer base within the sign making sector and a strong reputation for service and product knowledge. “We’re very pleased to be working with Lucy, Sam and the team at Signmaster and look forward to helping support them and their customers with their investment in Mimaki solutions,” says Hybrid’s national sales manager, John de la Roche. “Our plan for Signmaster Systems is to provide our customers with a choice of the best products and technology in the market – Mimaki most definitely fits into that vision,” reiterates Lucy. an inspiring environment,” continues de la Roche. “Bringing Mimaki back into the business has created a lot of excitement for the staff at Signmaster,” Lucy concludes. “It is a range we are all passionate about and we look forward to helping customers by adding Mimaki or upgrading their current Mimaki machine.” www.hybridservices.co.uk • www.signmaster.co.uk

Kall Kwik Birmingham’s Fastbind investment To meet the increasing demand for short run, perfectly bound books, Kall Kwik, Birmingham has invested in a Fastbind Elite XT perfect binder and a Casematic H46PRO casemaker from Ashgate Automation. The branch, which has been in operation since 1986, services businesses across Birmingham and beyond, but also has a thriving ‘walk-in’ business through its retail premises. “We decided the time had come to bring short run book making in-house. As well as speeding up production, it gives us total control and the opportunity to expand this area of our operation, initially with softback books but in due course with hard cover books as well. Previously we glued the text blocks and covers by hand and outsourced longer runs,” said Mark Eagles, Proprietor. “The Fastbind equipment also supports our two Canon digital printers so that we can take on a wide range of bound books, such as training manuals, student dissertations, log books, presentations etc. from print to finish. ” Mark saw Ashgate demonstrating the perfect binder and the casemaker at a recent exhibition and placed the order there and then. “The Fastbind table-top, manually operated machines met all our expectations in price, size and, most
importantly, the professional quality finish they provide. There are large automatic and semiautomatic binders on the market but we don’t have the volume to make that sort of investment viable. On average we produce anything from ten to 100+ bound books for our commercial customers and one or two copies for students. We perfect bind from 30 to approximately 300 sheets, “ Mark continued. The Elite XT is a robust perfect binder, which is easy to use and operate. It has the versatility to bind a variety of products including hard and soft cover books as well as pads and lay flat binding. It can bind books up to SRA3 size, which is useful for students who work on larger format projects. Mark confirms that it gives a professional bind on a range of stock. There are no set up times or book format adjustments. It self adjusts for book thickness from 1 to 1000 pages. They chose the H46PRO to meet the need for tailor-made books up to 1040 x 490mm (when opened) “We wanted the flexibility to produce books up to SRA3 or A4 landscape,” said Mark. “We print the large format covers on our large format Canon ink jet printer and then they can be laminated, if required.” The Casematic will come into its own when the branch starts
to make hard covers. The operation of the machine is simple. The covers are positioned on the Casematic’s illuminated suction table. Registration marks and a centre line ensure accurate placement. Once the boards are attached to the cover, the edges are easily folded using the integrated edge wrapper. The folding unit is adjustable for different thicknesses. “We are still at the learning stage but using the Fastbind kit has already improved our service offering greatly. We are going to have additional training so that all of us can operate the machines and we are optimistic that this investment will pay for itself in the first year,” Mark concluded. www.ashgate-automation.co.uk
Horizon RD-4055 Makes the Cut at SML Corby SML Corby has installed SML Group’s 15th Horizon RD-4055 worldwide. Supplied by Intelligent Finishing Services the system was chosen to unify RFID tag and label production and increase productivity. SML Corby is part of the global SML Group, headquartered in Hong Kong. Its mission is to be the leading branding and business solutions partner of brand owners and retailers worldwide. The organisation has operations in 30 countries worldwide. The Horizon RD-4055 was identified by SML’s head office as the part of its global procurement strategy established to ensure global production quality is consistently maintained. SML Corby works with numerous household names including Next, Tesco, Matalan, Burberry and the Arcadia Group. It produces short to medium runs on an HP Indigo and two Konica Minolta Bizhubs. Julian Wall, operations manager at the Corby plant, says the decision to invest was prompted by three drivers: “We were winning more and more orders for RFID tags and labels and our flatbed system was very labour intensive. Also, we had a fire in July and moved into a temporary building. Since then we have been phasing in new systems.” He continues: “We predominantly service UK businesses and manage a lot of short run work that needs to be turned around in 24 hours.”
The RD-4055 is designed to meet the growing demand for short run die-cut products. Running at a speed of up to 6,000 cycles per hour, it can die-cut, crease, perforate, slit, hole punch and round corner in one process for digital and offset printed sheets up to 0.5mm. Its repeat-register function enables the running of multiple up imposed applications with a smaller die to reduce die cost (Up to five repeats in a single pass). Wall adds: “We are now far more efficient, and turnaround is faster. We have tripled capacity. It is more cost effective too. The cutters are cheaper, the set up time is faster and there is less material wastage. And because this is the 15th in the group we have colleagues in Germany and Barcelona we can quickly call to ensure we are achieving consistent results. It is an all round win.” www.ifsl.uk.com

Newprint returns to Morgana for more finishing Newprint, Newmarket, has returned to Morgana Systems for additional post-press product. A DigiFold 385, the recently released Laminator 450, and an EBA guillotine have been added to existing Morgana products at the busy Newmarket print shop. Existing Morgana equipment at Newprint includes the BM500 bookletmaker and KB 2000 perfect binding machine, along with an FSN numbering unit. DigiFold 385 is Morgana’s easy to use, high capacity, stand-alone paper folding and creasing machine. The original DigiFold has been one of the company’s best selling products since it was first introduced back in 2001. Morgana DigiFold products employ a unique creasing rule and matrix, the DynaCrease, that eliminates tearing and, therefore, cracking. Commenting on the new additions, David Prior, Managing Director of Newprint, said: “We saw the new Lamintor 450 at last year’s Ipex exhibiton – it was just what we were looking for. Our existing laminator needed to perforate the whole of the substrate, rather than just the film. On heavier weight stocks that could cause problems and, as it was a hand fed unit, it was difficult to clear a problem whilst feeding the
machine. It could become a slow process. The new Laminator 450 perforates the film, making sheet separation far more effective and reliable. It’s also a suction fed system, speeding up the whole process. “We are now actively seeking more laminating work, rather than trying to avoid it!”
With regard to the DigiFold 385, David added: “We didn’t need to see it in action. We have worked with Morgana for many years and know the product range. This was the ideal machine for us to move to. We had a creasing system before, but DigiFold creases and folds, and it does both tasks very well. The high capacity model means that we can load the machine and, once we have set the machine up, we can just let it run — no need to keep loading prints into the feeder.” Commenting on one of the first installations of the Laminator 450 product, Morgana’s Ray Hillhouse said: “We are delighted to have been able to assist David with his laminating issue — the Laminator 450 and 450 Pro offer a range of printers — the ideal in-house laminating solution. First shown at Ipex last year, we have been delighted with the interest shown in the product.” Printing at Newprint consists of both litho and digital equipment, with two Konica Minolta 1070 machines producing a wide range of short-run general commercial work. A team of four full-time and one part-time employee take on work from a range of local customers. www.newprint.co.uk • www.morgana.co.uk

Canon new iQuarius MX inks for Océ VarioPrint Canon has launched new iQuarius MX inks for the Océ VarioPrint i-series sheet fed inkjet presses. These third-generation inks for the Océ VarioPrint i-series have been specifically developed to meet the needs of customers working with offset coated papers for high quality graphic arts applications. The new Océ iQuarius MX inks enable application of higher ink coverages on many offset coated stocks, increasing the range of standard papers which can be used with the Océ VarioPrint i-series presses. The move extends the applications range of Océ VarioPrint i-series technology to even more demanding applications, such as higher quality books, manuals and direct mail requiring the most vivid colour reproduction. Utilising the full capabilities of Canon’s sheet fed inkjet technology, print service providers (PSPs) and in-house print rooms can now embrace the advantages of short-run and personalised digital production on a wider range of substrates and seamlessly switch between multiple stocks. Océ iQuarius MX inks are used in combination with the ColorGrip inline paper conditioning solution to optimise ink adhesion and absorption. Duncan Smith, Director of Industrial and Production Solutions at Canon UK, comments: “Since the original launch of the Océ VarioPrint i-series in 2015, we have been actively driving the performance of the technology and inks to enable more customers to take advantage of
this ground-breaking press concept. Having initially focused on the transactional and direct mail segments, with the launch of ColorGrip at drupa 2016 we extended the scope of the press to standard coated offset media and therefore to higher quality direct mail and books. This broadened the audience for the Océ VarioPrint i-series to the point where Canon leads the market in sheet fed inkjet installations, with customers worldwide producing an extensive range of promotional and publishing applications.” “The launch of the iQuarius MX inks is a direct result of our collaboration with customers, who asked us to channel our innovation efforts into developing inks that would enable them to reap the productivity benefits of the Océ VarioPrint i-series across an even broader spectrum of applications, supporting them to migrate more work from offset to digital production.” Canon customer Livonia Print is a highvolume book producer in Riga, Latvia, using Océ VarioPrint i300 presses for digital colour book production. Being one of the lead customers in Europe for the new Océ iQuarius MX inks, it has quickly experienced the quality advantages of the new formulation. With the new iQuarius MX inks, Livonia Print has been able to expand the range of books it is transferring from offset
to digital printing using offset coated material, including education and trade books. This is enhancing the services it now offers to its customers. The original iQuarius ink for the Océ VarioPrint i-series will now be branded as Océ iQuarius MP ink (Multi Purpose), to distinguish it from the new iQuarius MX (Media Extended) version, supporting customers to choose the appropriate level of ink performance for their applications. The new iQuarius MX inks are available from April 2018. For current Océ VarioPrint i-series customers, MX-upgrades will be made available on request. The Océ VarioPrint i300 press with iQuarius MX inks has achieved Fogra 51 certification. Canon is able to offer specific technical support to customers working with an Océ VarioPrint i-series press who would like to pursue Fogra 51 accreditation for their own operations, with a view to optimising quality control and offering additional quality assurance to their customers. Océ iQuarius inks are one element of a portfolio of iQuarius technologies, developed to enable high speed inkjet printing on sheets. Océ iQuarius also comprises: sheet entry control for purging of imperfect sheets before printing; precise sheet control for positioning and flattening of sheets for printing; controlled drying system to optimise media stability; and inline quality control for automated detection and correction of nozzle failures. www.canon.co.uk

The new Fiery DFEs include powerful tools to make expert colour adjustments, plus job make-ready and automation enhancements for greater workflow efficiency. “Fiery is the premier DFE platform for commercial digital print, and we’re pleased to use the latest Fiery technology for our newest digital presses,” said Eef de Ridder, director of commercial printing for the Ricoh Europe Commercial and Industrial Printing Group. “Clients can expand their business offerings with the winning combination of our Pro C7200X Series’ unique creative capabilities, along with powerful Fiery colour and workflow functionality.” Speciality toner and imaging support - Both Fiery DFEs fully support the Pro C7200X Series’
speciality toner capabilities, including clear, white, neon pink, neon yellow, and invisible red. Users can easily manage speciality toners throughout the entire job workflow, preventing inadvertent errors and reducing waste. Plus, users have the ability to add speciality toner to jobs without going back to prepress or changing the design file. Users also have full control over whether to apply white toner over or under CMYK, and whether to mirror or invert any of the files. EFI’s innovative Dynamic HD Text & Graphics feature on these new Fiery DFEs prints sharp fine details, small font size text and ultra-thin lines with clarity. “These new Fiery DFEs for Ricoh printers provide the essential tools to make customers more productive,” said John Henze, vice president of Fiery marketing at EFI. “In addition to the advancements of the Fiery FS300 Pro software, they include Fiery Command WorkStation® 6, the industry standard job management software, which allows customers to work more efficiently and keep all of their print engines producing profitably. Plus, Fiery HyperRIP enhancements on the E-85A enables print service providers to double the processing
speed on more types of jobs.” Fiery NX hardware platform - Both servers utilise the Fiery NX hardware platform, delivering unparalleled performance along with a sleek, modern design for higher operational efficiency. The servers can be housed in the optional Fiery NX Station LS, a cutting-edge, ergonomic work environment for customers who need a highly efficient and comfortable workspace. Workflow automation to effortlessly set up complex jobs - Both Fiery servers come with Fiery JobFlow™ Base automation software for streamlined prepress job preparation. An additional automation upgrade is also available for intelligent job routing, advanced scripting and other features. Best-in-class integration - Fiery DFEs help print service providers achieve business-wide workflow automation by integrating EFI management information systems, EFI Webto-Print software, and other popular prepress workflows, such as Kodak™ PRINERGY™, Heidelberg® Prinect® and Agfa Apogee®. www.efi.com
New Canon imagePRESS C850 series features Canon has extended the capabilities of its imagePRESS C850 series of cut sheet toner presses with the addition of an automated duplex feeder for banner sheets, plus improved workflow solutions. The capability to print banner sheets has been a popular attribute of the Canon imagePRESS C850 series since its launch. The addition of automated duplex feeding for long sheets fully unlocks the commercial potential of this feature, enabling customers to confidently promote the advantages of this media format and differentiate their product offering. The new POD Deck Lite XL-A1 long sheet feeder enables automated duplex feeding of 1,000 banner sheets (up to 762mm). This makes it possible for print service providers (PSPs) and in-house print rooms to produce extended runs of document, book and high-quality graphic arts applications that take advantage of the longer sheet, such as A4 landscape folds, extended book covers, tri-fold brochures, long postcards, direct mailings and so on. The imagePRESS C850 series is specifically designed to deliver the versatility and media flexibility needed in a busy, multi-application production environment, with a front-loading media tray to help operators switch seamlessly between standard formats and long sheets. PRISMASync v6.0 controller - Supporting customers seeking high colour consistency for quality graphic arts applications, the introduction of version 6.0 of Canon’s own PRISMAsync controller increases the speed of colour calibration by a factor of three by using one halftone rather than three, while fully automating colour validation tests such as Fogra and IDEAlliance. The improved controller also connects with third party JDF/ JMF workflows for further production efficiencies.
New Fiery solutions for imagePRESS C850 series - To enhance print production efficiencies and offer a more versatile solution, Canon partner EFI has launched the embedded Fiery Digital Front End (DFE) EFI G200 and introduced additional software updates with the new external DFE EFI H300, both supporting the new long sheet feeder. These new solutions will enhance performance of the Canon imagePRESS C850 series for high quality colour applications, improve paper management, reduce downtime and boost productivity. Wayne Barlow, Head of Graphics & Communications Business Group, Canon UK, comments: “Quality, productivity and applications versatility are our bywords for the continuous development of our digital production solutions. With these latest enhancements to media feeding and workflow, we are ensuring that imagePRESS C850 series customers can take full advantage of the many opportunities to diversify their offering with new products, while further improving colour consistency, productivity and operational efficiency.” Print quality and press reliability have been key factors in the success of the imagePRESS C850 product family to date, supported by innovative features such as the R-VCSEL red laser technology which delivers 2,400 x 2,400 dpi resolution, and the Compact Registration Module for precise front-to-back registration with automatic skew correction and precision image placement. Barlow concludes: “There’s no doubt that consistent quality and precise colour management is vital if PSPs are to have the confidence to expand their product portfolio and sell these capabilities to their customers.” www.canon.co.uk

Konica Minolta unveils AccurioPress C3080 With the launch of the AccurioPress C3080 series, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Europe introduces a new line of production printing systems. As a successor of the AccurioPress C2070 series, the AccurioPress C3080 digital series combines the outstanding quality and performance of the previous models with additional features and options to adapt to individual customer requirements. It also helps increase customer profitability by creating smooth and streamlined workflows to expand print services. The AccurioPrint C3070/C3080 are perfect for print providers in an entry-level production environment. Both devices provide an easy transition into digital printing, with entry-level finishing features and an optional modular concept for maximum colour consistency. Customers benefit from the superb image quality and optimal media flexibility. For commercial printers and CRDs with high volume demands, Konica Minolta offers the AccurioPress C3070/C3080/P. These devices are particularly well suited for the creation of digital printing materials, in light of professional modular finishing, outstanding colour and registration stability combined with excellent print quality. With a print speed of 81ppm in colour and monochrome, the AccurioPress C3080 series enables print providers to create more business opportunities by handling a high media flexibility and wide range of essential digital printing applications. The series comes with
improved thick paper support for various media types, such as coated and embossed paper up to 350 gsm. In addition, a new, large capacity unit for banners up to 762 mm in size ensures efficient banner printing, such as for book covers and three-fold menus. Auto duplex printing and paper capacity of up to 15,390 sheets maximises uptime. IQ-501 delivers automatic and real time colour and registration adjustment and the creation of printer profiles with skill-less operation. This helps eliminate input time and reduces errors. André Statkus, Product Manager at Konica Minolta Business Solutions Europe GmbH explains: “As there is no longer the need for measurement or numerical input, high quality print products are constantly available with fewer manual settings and less human errors. In addition, thanks to real-time monitoring and adjustments during printing, high quality is ensured, contributing to cost reduction through less waste but also improving customer trust. The new colour dual scanner is capable of running at a speed of up to 240 ipm, and is equipped with a double-feed detection kit to avoid scanning two sheets at once. Envelope
production has increased in speed, too, resulting in a more cost effective process. OpenAPI provides a seamless interface between Konica Minolta production printing devices and third-party solutions for accounting, authentication or scan routing such as YSoft Safe Q and Nuance eCopy Sharescan. Furthermore, IWS (Internal Web Server) enables the User Interface to be customised based on operator requirements, which makes everyday work more efficient. Statkus concludes: “The enhanced productivity and improved job flexibility for banner printing in addition to features of intelligent quality optimiser IQ-501 and high and consistent image quality of AccurioPress C3080 series that are highly rated in commercial printing industry provides a competitive system in LPP market. That is why the AccurioPressC3080 series is perfectly positioned to contribute to customers’ business expansion.” www.konicaminolta.eu

PIXEL PROPHET
MAKING PRINT SEXY Martin Christie has been making an annual expedition to Birmingham’s NEC to a photography show for nearly twenty years now, and as it is now The Photography Show, it has changed much in two decades.
[B]
ack in the day it was much more of a divide between trade, professional and enthusiastic amateurs, both in approach and in the range of products available. Of course, those were the days still dominated by film, when digital was a twinkle in the eye of some new and upcoming developers, and an irritating distraction to many well known brand names soon to suffer from its dramatic evolution. Like most revolutions, it has brought good things and bad things in roughly equal measure, and depending from which place you view it. It has empowered every single person with a suitable device to capture and publish images virtually instantly to every other person with a similar device. But this visual democracy has also brought with it a certain anarchy that has intruded on any concept of privacy, or right of ownership. It’s a revolution, like most, embraced with enthusiasm but without much direction or idea where it will lead. Indeed, its fast moving rise has consumed several of those who initiated it, such is the pace of change, and the fickleness of demand. The most significant change for the print industry has been the loss of control over the process. With film, with few exceptions, customers had to go to a professional processor, and accept the time frame dictated or pay a premium. If the images were to be published for wider distribution, as
a leaflet or a magazine, a whole line of experts would take charge of the process from initial design to reproduction houses sorting out scanning and colour, and from litho print production schedule to actual hard copy distribution. Regardless of the client’s expectations, they would have to accept that their demands were ultimately in the hands of people who knew more, and would have to accept the fact. We are now all too well aware that the old adage, “the customer is always right”, has been modified to include the extra “...and knows better.” The information at their fingertips tells them it can be done quicker, cheaper and better quality, rather than only one or two of the options in the real world. And that’s assuming that the so-called artwork provided might by some miracle be print-ready. With a digital device in their hands, now everyone can be an expert, whether it’s a designer, an artist or a photographer for example. What was obvious at the 2018 Photography show, compared to years ago, was the wide range of possibilities available, and as a consequence a greater variety of people in attendance, and actively interested in the many

alternatives on offer. There’s still the backbone of amateur collectors in pursuit of the latest, ever longer lens, but there are fewer anoraks and rather more fashionable tote bags and Ipads. Digital imaging is not only visually exciting, it is trendy, it is sexy. The revolution has given everyone the possibility of producing something entirely original and creative, even if most of them would prefer to simply copy the examples of others. There are always new gadgets: drones and virtual reality are the latest attention grabbers, but I didn’t see a single 3D printer. A couple of years back there was going to be one in every home, but at least that myth has been busted and converted into the acceptance that it is a technology only an expert can master. And this observation started me thinking, as I journeyed home watching snow dust the Midlands from my Virgin Intercity window seat. Just because anyone can potentially take a great picture — and my previous rant about an infinite number of monkeys suggests that in theory anybody can — it doesn’t mean they can produce a great print. There is still a lot of interest in print, and a large portion of the exhibition
vivid-online.com
is devoted to printing machines and various sizes and specifications. And there is obvious delight in handling a quality print. As often stated, a print is the ultimate test of a picture’s real quality. So why is printing not seen as sexy? In a media environment where baking a cake, or knitting a pattern is recognised as high achievement and followed by millions, where is the status of the printer in this league table of life skills? If a foul-mouthed cook can be considered a celebrity, why not a patient, polite and helpful hard working printer, saving the day on somebody’s crucial deadline. Surely there’s enough drama any week in print-on-demand, getting through by the skin of our teeth despite delivery setbacks, computer problems and broken machines. Perhaps the industry as a whole should take a look at reality TV for guidance in promoting its profile to the general public. It would seem the only way skill and experience is going to be recognised. A Great British Print Off perhaps? Where guests are invited into the print room to produce something praiseworthy from the content of their mobile phone while a regular looks on and chuckles at the antics and frustrations. Of course it might well end up as more I’m celebrity get me out of here..!

reativity Brought To Life — the 2018 theme — has come about in response to extensive Sign & Digital UK visitor research and its findings. Rudi Blackett, event director for Sign & Digital UK said: “We are delighted to announce our 2018 visitors will benefit from a wider range of learning and networking opportunities than ever before, with new practical demo areas and interactive visitor features. “In addition to focusing on our core sign, print and finishing and display markets, we will also be broadening the appeal of the show further with an emphasis on the design and creative, textile print, event build and interior décor markets. We are introducing a programme of engaging show content to highlight the business opportunities in these growing market sectors.”
If you really want to know look in the mirror
Every so often a new product comes along which you must really look into. The ASLAN SE75 is a 75 micron polyester self-adhesive mirror effect film. Its highly reflective finish is so good, when applied to a smooth surface, it gives a near perfect mirror finish. If you think that’s good, then imagine a self-adhesive film with the same mirror effect on both sides; which is completely scratch resistant; which can be cad-cam plotter cut to any shape required and there you have the new ASLAN SE75. With a minimum exterior
durability of 3-5 year this film can even be used outside and is easy to keep clean. The SE 75 has potential in so many areas of the retail design environment. As simple highly mirror like graphics on POS and shop window displays for instance. QPP designers now have a product which they can use to produce mirrors in any shape or size and double-sided if required. When applied to a smooth board, such as acrylic sheet, the finished product becomes a very lightweight, scratch-proof safety mirror for use in any changing room or wash room facilities. www.dorotape.co.uk

Hybrid to show broad range of Mimaki technology
With a large stand situated at the entrance to Hall 18, Hybrid will also be supporting a significant number of its specialist resellers, ensuring a considerable Mimaki presence at the show. For the first time, Hybrid will be showing the entire range of Mimaki’s UCJV Series LED UV printer/cutters, with both the UCJV300 and UCJV150 on display together at a UK exhibition. “The new Mimaki UCJV Series brings revolutionary technology to the sign and graphics market, using the very latest LED UV cure inks and offering an unparalleled range of applications from the one machine, making them already very popular with sign makers, print providers and graphics houses,” confirms Hybrid’s National Sales Manager, John de la Roche. “We’re looking forward to the response from visitors to Sign & Digital UK and for many, it’ll be the first machine they see on entering the halls.” Mimaki’s key solvent printers and printer/ cutters will also play a starring role with a number of innovative and popular systems on display. “We’ll have plenty to talk about with sign makers and graphics professionals,” continues de la Roche, “Solutions such as
Mimaki’s orange solvent ink, Mimaki’s huge range of vinyl printing hardware and even our unique die-cutting technology make a real difference to users the world over, hence our focus on this significant area at the show.” In addition to its main stand, Hybrid is very excited to also be running the Textile Printing Live Demo feature that sits adjacent to its stand at the front of Hall 18. “We’ll be inviting visitors to try their hand at creating printed textile products that they can personalise and take home,” states Hybrid’s Textile Product Manager, Brett Platt. “Getting up close for even just a few minutes can help those new to the technology appreciate the ease with which textiles can be decorated and attractive products added to their portfolio.” The Textile Printing Live Demo will showcase a variety of inspiring applications — from

Neschen goes “retro garage”
ArtSystems will be joining leading manufacturer Neschen to promote its signage and graphics media during Sign & Digital UK. This year the Neschen and ArtSystems’ team will offer visitors a warm welcome to stand F42, which will be themed around a retro garage look. The displays are designed to offer ample opportunities for visitors to see the media’s great potential for point of sales signage and interior décor applications. Previous years have seen Neschen explore the possibilities of other entertaining themes including “A day at the seaside” and “Open all hours”, but the displays also have a practical purpose. Paul Tarry, ArtSystems; Division Manager Consumables explains: “Visitors come to the Neschen stand looking for inspiration, and they walk away with a smile on their faces. People have come to expect something light-hearted and we wanted to continue that tradition in 2018 with a theme that was fun but also had a relevance to a lot of the visitors to Sign & Digital UK. “The retro garage concept allows us to show off some of the key Neschen applications for sign and display professionals, and so has proved ideal. Visitors to stand F42 will also benefit from meeting the friendly and insightful team who will be able to talk them through the simple Neschen media application processes and demonstrate how they can obtain stunning, bubble free results.” “The classic range of Neschen Easy Dot products will be in the limelight, including: the highly successful Print n Walk floor system; Window Grip media with its unique adhesion technology that allows repositioning multiple times and leaves no residue — even after two to three years; and the popular Chalkboard black

THE PRINT SHOW
STRENGTH TO STRENGTH The Print Show has announced details of a special open day on April 11th that invites exhibitors current and prospective, trade press and industry bodies, to take in some of London’s most famous landmarks and find out what is in store at this year’s exhibition.
[N]
ow in its fourth year, The Print Show will take place at the NEC in Birmingham from September 18th to 20th. Interest in the event is already high with stand space up 20 per cent year on year. Many of the print industry’s leading names will come together at the UK’s national trade exhibition for the commercial print industry. The Print Show will set sail down London’s River Thames at a special event that will feature input from the organising team, as well as talks from financial experts on how to best prepare for Brexit. Guests will be treated to a cruise down the Thames past some of London’s most famous landmarks, including St Paul’s, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, the Cutty Sark, HMS Belfast, and the O2 Arena. Meanwhile, organisers of The Print Show have announced a raft of new signings for this year’s event. With a number of major brands already on board for 2018, including the likes of HP, Vivid Laminating, Hybrid Services (Mimaki), CMYUK, Renz and Premier Paper, the exhibitor list now features a number of new names. On board will be a barbecue buffet and drinks reception to enjoy in the spring sunshine, before expert speakers address guests about some of the key talking points in the current market. Afterwards, all guests will be able to enjoy the networking portion of the event, where they can enjoy further conversation and drinks until the cruise docks at 17:00. Chris Davies, event director for The Print Show, said: “This is a great opportunity for us to meet with companies that have already signed up to the show, as well as those that are also interested in exhibiting and are keen to find out more about
what they can expect from attending. “We are also looking forward to meeting with members of the industry press, trade associations, and industry-focused support bodies so that we can pass on more information about our plans for the show, including the various special areas that will feature and a number of campaigns that we will be running in the lead-up to the event.”
Interest peaks as big-hitters continue to commit
Looking to the progress of The Print Show, the most recent crop of exhibitors include Morgana Systems, KAS Paper Systems, Spandex, Atlantic Tech Services, Opus, Simply Print Finishing, Peleman Industries (Formerly Unibind), Ribbon Print, Packaids, and Punchbind. An up-to-date floor plan and exhibitor list are available to view on The Print Show website. “It’s fantastic to have had so many companies sign up in the space of just a few short weeks,” Davies said. He added: “The floor plan for the 2018 show is almost half full and we are looking forward to announcing further new signings in the near future.” Morgana has been an ever-present at the event since its launch in 2015 and will once again be in attendance this year to showcase its latest finishing kit to visitors. Commenting on the decision to attend the event, Ray Hillhouse, vice-president offline business at Morgana, said: “The Print Show continues to go from strength to strength. It has put itself firmly on the exhibition map for the UK’s printing industry, and we are delighted that it is returning this year to the NEC. “Attendance for the first three years of The Print Show has been very good indeed. We
look forward to welcoming even more print companies along to the NEC. “The marketing of the event has been very thorough to date, so we are looking forward to another successful exhibition where we will be showing our new range of products for 2018.” Tsol Keoshgerian, chief executive of Peleman Industries, previously known as Unibind, spoke positively about exhibiting at The Print Show this year, citing encouraging feedback from friends and colleagues in the industry as one of the main reasons behind signing up. Keoshgerian said: “The feedback I have had from friends within print is that The Print Show focuses on our part of the industry and thus a must for Peleman Industries to attend as exhibitors. “We re-branded earlier this year. Everyone knows us as Unibind Systems, but we are much more than just a binding company. Peleman Industries is an innovative engineering company with solutions to print finishing. The Print Show is our opportunity to showcase these products.” Keoshgerian also offered an insight into what we can expect from the company at the event in September: “Doubtless we will showcase the Unifoil Printer, our very successful digital foiler, as well as desktop case making solutions. “However, the star attraction will be the UK launch of the V-Paper Tower, which ensures that every single sheet of documents of any size— ranging from short presentations to thicker reports—lays flat. The V-Paper Tower twists a double-fold near the edge of every sheet, which can then be bound together with triple staples, perfect binding machines or thermal binding systems. www.theprintshow.com

How Life Unfolds® A new campaign reveals two new animated characters to further strengthen the consumer connection established by the campaign over the past three years. The new industry brand ambassadors are a springboard for inspiring creativity, connection and achievement–qualities consumers around the world appreciate when using paper and paper-based packaging products. “Paper and packaging products are prevalent in our lives, and it was our goal to create highly-relatable characters to represent the vital roles that paper and packaging play for each and every one of us,” shares Mary Anne Hansan, president of the Paper and Packaging Board. “We launched the Paper & Packaging — How Life Unfolds campaign, and we are thrilled to introduce these new characters to help consumers nationwide recognise and remember the value of paper in their everyday lives.” The newest iteration of the Paper & Packaging – How Life Unfolds campaign was created by Milwaukee-based agency, Cramer-Krasselt, to help emphasise the unsung heroes of everyday life with engaging, instantly recognisable characters. “We literally brought paper and packaging to life as animated characters to highlight paper’s timeless power and relevance in our increasingly digital world,” said Todd Stone, group creative director at Cramer-Krasselt. “Through decades of technological innovation, paper remains one of the most effective ways to learn, communicate and share ideas. And nothing keeps the items you care about safe during transit better than corrugated packaging.” Consumers will meet the new animated characters on TV, in magazines such as QPP Quick Print Pro, US Weekly, Forbes, Delta Sky, ESPN, HGTV Magazine and Parents Magazine, via digital ads on platforms like Hulu, and across more digital and social media channels. Carbon Capture
®
A low cost environmental programme for you and your customers that creates woodland here in the UK.
Industry must educate customers that not all is as green as it seems As businesses come under increased pressure to optimise their green credentials, Antalis has stated that the industry has an important role to play in educating consumers about sustainable options and dispelling the long-held myth that ‘digital is always the greenest choice.’ In order to succeed, it is becoming increasingly important for businesses to act quickly to prove their commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR), with a third (33%) of consumers now choosing to buy from brands they believe are doing social or environmental good. This, in turn, is putting pressure on businesses to invest in developing their sustainability strategy, and reducing paper count in favour of e-communications — being often perceived as the more environmentally friendly of the two. However, the reality is that this isn’t necessarily the case — and the industry has a job to do in educating customers on the bigger picture. James Jarvis, Antalis’ Channel Director for Print, comments: “It is easy to see why people may assume that sending a quick email rather than, say, a letter in the post, may be more environmentally friendly because there is no material requirement. However, the reality is that this is an incredibly complex topic area, and the case for digital and paper mediums cannot be rationalised without looking at the full lifetime costs. “Many customers may be shocked to know, for example, that displaying a page for three minutes on a screen consumes more energy than producing a printed version of that page — or that sending 20 emails a day over one year emits as much CO2 as driving 1,000km by car. “Also, it’s important to point out that paper is one of the few products which is completely sustainable and that the paper industry is actually one of the biggest users of renewable energy.” According to a report from Two Sides, the main ingredient of paper — wood — is grown in such a carefully controlled and sustainable way that European forests, where most of it comes from, have grown by an area the size of Switzerland in just 10 years. At the same time, the report flags a prior study by Green Peace which showed that, if compared with the electricity demand of countries in the same years, ‘cloud services’ would rank sixth in the world, with demand expected to increase a staggering 63% by 2020. James adds: “As the sustainability issue continues to gain pace, the recommendation is for printers to take the time to provide customers with a clear overview of the business case for paper and digital options so that they can make a clear, informed decision.” Antalis has developed its own Green Star System which rates each paper with a star according to its environmental performance. www.antalis.co.uk
From its launch to the beginning of 2017 the Carbon Capture programme has donated over £500,000 to the Woodland Trust. Premier is a major supporter and corporate partner of the Woodland Trust, the UK's leading conservation charity the Woodland Trust in its work to plant and conserve native woodland in numerous locations across the UK. Premier offers customers the opportunity to buy Carbon Captured products, where the CO2 emissions from the manufacture and distribution of the product has been calculated and an equivalent amount of CO2 has been captured by planting native British woodland.

Antalis Academy Helps Customers to Boost Business with First Webinar Antalis Academy has held its very first webinar designed to provide printing companies with fresh insight into how to boost their business in 2018 and beyond. The new seminar, entitled ‘Three Practical Strategies To Increase Your Print Sales This Year’. As the name might suggest, over the course of the session delegates will get to learn about three proven strategies to help them create more business, increase profit margins and improve relationships with existing clients and new prospects. Not to be missed, the session is run by keynote speaker Matthew Parker, the Champion of Print at Profitable Print Relationships; a market-leading training consultancy that shows print companies the buyer’s view. Prior to setting up Profitable Print Relationships, Matthew headed up print purchasing at Future Publishing, one of the UK’s leading consumer magazine publishers, and was a print specialist at various companies. Talking of the upcoming webinars, Matthew said: “It is becoming harder and harder to reach prospects, let alone convert them to profitable customers. According to some studies, print companies should be prepared to lose between 15-20% of their clients every year. This webinar is designed to help printing companies connect better with current customers and new prospects. It is also designed to help improve profit margins. “The webinars will contain practical, actionable advice on how printing companies can improve their engagement with today’s buyers.”
Giles Bristow, digital support manager at the Antalis Academy, adds: “Aligned to our recent Antalis Academy rebrand, our remit is to provide customers with more than just training and support in relation to products, techniques and solutions – but also wider business skills. “With this in mind, we have joined forces with Matthew, a leading industry authority when it comes to enhancing customer relationships and driving sales, in order to help our customers to boost their business margins. “Best of all, not only can customers join the webinars online from the comfort of their own office or home, but Matthew’s proven strategies are very innovative and aimed at the quick print pro audience. It promises to be a great season of sessions and we’d urge all customers to book their place now by registering at: www.digital2business.co.uk.” www.antalis.co.uk
Canon showcase latest cut sheet digital print
Canon hosted its second Cutting Edge customer event in March at its Customer Experience Centre in Venlo, The Netherlands, where they showcased the latest innovations in its cut sheet digital print solutions portfolio. The event, which attracted some 400 Canon customers from across Europe, featured demonstrations of Canon colour and mono cut

sheet digital print technologies, including the Océ VarioPrint i-series, imagePRESS C10000VP and C850 series presses for colour production and the award winning Canon varioPRINT 140 and Océ VarioPrint 6000 TITAN series presses for monochrome applications. Inspiring delegates with the opportunities enabled by the latest technology advancements across the sheet fed inkjet and toner print portfolio, customers explored all presses in live production of a range of commercial applications, driven by state of the art workflow software and supported by third party finishing solutions. Canon wide format solutions, including the Océ Colorado 1640 roll to roll printer featuring Canon UVgel technology and the Océ Arizona flatbed series, were on show. The two mono production presses, the Canon varioPRINT 140, which recently received the BLI Production Printer Pro Award, and the Océ VarioPrint Titan series, which features its unique Gemini Instant Duplex Technology, demonstrated how they can significantly improve productivity gains for quick print pro customers. To further demonstrate how to achieve production efficiencies, Canon’s digital cut sheet technology solutions are supported by the workflow and output management system PRISMA and third party software from finishing partner Tecnau. The Cutting Edge event demonstrated how Canon’s continuous innovation, such as the new iQuarius MX inks for the Océ VarioPrint i-series and the addition of an automated duplex feeder for banner sheets for the imagePRESS C850 series can help print service providers (PSPs) and inhouse print rooms increase productivity and strengthen their applications portfolio, driving new revenue streams and delivering additional growth opportunities. The opening keynote presentation was delivered by innovation expert Danny Mekić, who discussed the future of technology, the value of printed information in today’s digital world and how customers can be inspired to grow their business from a blank sheet. Internationally renowned expert on innovation and modern management Lars Sudmann also shared his ideas as to how PSPs can lead by example and collaborate with partners like Canon to drive their business forward and develop competitive edge. Visitors also heard from Canon customers who are already reaping the benefits of investing in digital cut sheet solutions, such as Latvian book producer Livonia Print and the in-house print department of MAN Bus & Truck AG from Germany. Managing director Trond Erik Isakse, Livonia Print, comments: “With digital print, publishers can produce significantly smaller quantities to trial a title, and order further reprints depending on how successfully it sells. We want to give publishers the opportunity to print exactly what they need from an asset store of prepared digital files, and even to extend this print-ondemand capability directly to the book store.” Customers were invited to tour the Venlo Manufacturing and Logistics factory and participate in a series of workshops, covering a broad range of topics including: the future of in-house printing in 2020; insights into the graphic arts publishing and promotional industry; the impact of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on print production businesses. For customers active in publishing, the event highlighted how Canon’s solutions align to growing trends, such as on-demand colour books and manuals. At the event, Canon advised customers on how to realise integrated workflow solutions, implement innovative business models and

stay ahead of publishing trends. Customers specialising in promotional material were inspired by the fictional “Elemental” brand campaign, which demonstrates the integration of various promotional print applications in a multichannel consumer campaign. The campaign showed how customers can capitalise on the capabilities of Canon cut sheet digital presses to take advantage of new opportunities, such as the production of packaging inserts on ultralightweight media. The auto-duplex long sheet printing capability of the imagePRESS C850 also enables customers to fully utilising all of the space on the paper for promotional messages and differentiate themselves by using non-traditional, standout formats. Duncan Smith, Director of Industrial and Production Solutions at Canon UK, comments: “Our Cutting Edge event provides us with a great opportunity to inspire customers to explore all the possibilities with cut sheet digital print. The latest innovations across our inkjet and toner platforms, in small and wide format, underline Canon’s deep investment in finding solutions that create new opportunities for our customers. The event will demonstrate how customers can improve process efficiency to take advantage of the accelerating trend to on-demand production, diversify their applications portfolio and identify new revenue opportunities to fuel their growth.” www.canon.co.uk
3D Printing & Reverse Engineering Event
GoPrint3D hosted a 3D printing event in their new showroom recently. There was a bit of a “snow” start with some un-forecasted heavy snow delaying a few delegates. Thankfully 17 attendees managed to make it to GoPrint3D HQ ready for an (almost) full day of 3D printing, scanning, reverse engineering and CAD. The day was opened by GoPrint3D’s Sales Director, James Blackburn, who welcomed the delegates to Ripon and set the stage for the day before passing it over to John Minto to introduce his company, Mintronics, and first speaker, David Jupp. David’s session focused on CAD design for 3D printing using Alibre. David designed a test tray and a multiholder for a CNC machine. David’s design was then passed to the next speakers, Kevin Askew and Darren Ayres from GoPrint3D who proceeded to slice, load and 3D print David’s designs using the Zortrax M200. After lunch Robert Footitt demonstrated 3D scanning and reverse engineering. His designs were then 3D printed by Kevin and Darren once again, this time using the Form 2 and the Mark Two, incorporating demos of Preform and Eiger respectively. All in all it was a great, free event for all involved, and will be the first of many events hosted at GoPrint3D’s new showroom. If you would like to attend one of GoPrint3D’s future events, you can follow them on Twitter or Facebook, @GoPrint3D, or signup to their newsletter at www.goprint3d.co.uk

Baker Labels expands in Brentwood
Baker Labels has announced that they have picked up the keys and started work on expanding their premises at Hubert Road in Brentwood. Bakers has been in their state of the art, purpose built factory in Brentwood, Essex since the move from Walthamstow in 2011 and has been rapidly increasing production capacity, turnover and staff recruitment ever since. As part of his continued investment in the company, Managing Director Steve Baker saw the vacant neighbouring warehouse as an opportunity not to be missed and has some exciting plans for the extra 10,000 square feet. ‘It’s been seven years since we moved to Brentwood and it’s been an incredibly exciting period in our history with year on year very positive investment and growth. We look forward to continuing this trend so need more space and being next door it was a very easy decision!’ Steve Baker, Managing Director. The new building will become home to the materials division of Bakers. The plan is to be installed there by the end of April, leaving the current materials warehouse available for further equipment investment and the possibility of branching into new, exciting areas of print. Watch this space! New Turret Rewinder - Bakers continue to invest in the latest technology to keep improving efficiency and performance. The newest addition to Baker’s factory was delivered on the 20th February. The new Auto Set Vectra SGTR glueless turret rewinder from AB Graphics will save hours of set-up time. The Vectra SGTR holds the substrate to the cores at the start of a new roll without stopping or slowing down the converting equipment. In addition, it is fitted with a print and apply label applicator to close the finished roll with a label. Quick, fast and clean, it is especially suitable for rewinding labels which have been printed on heat sensitive substrates, or using heat sensitive inks, finishes or decorations. “The demand for faster turn around and higher output is key to our long term success and equipment like this helps to make it a bit easier. Reinvesting the profits in equipment and staff training has and will always be our main priority. This is a great piece of kit which the guys are already very comfortable with and are impressed with the ease of set-up.” Steve Baker, Managing Director. www.bakerlabels.co.uk

Bow Design takes aim with Roland TrueVIS VG-640 Bow Design is a small business, but its new Roland DG TrueVIS VG-640 has allowed it to take some of the UK’s biggest companies as clients. Matthew Anderson bought a small sign company, based in Swansea, UK in September 2017. He decided to add to some additional printer power to the business – rebranded as Bow Design – almost straightaway. “We had a 14-year-old Roland VersaCAMM SP-540 – which is still going strong – plus a laminator and a CNC router, but I wanted to go after large accounts. A contract with one of the UK’s biggest retailers depended on upgrading our printing capacity,” says the Bow Design owner. Matthew decided to stay with Roland, narrowing down the choice to a TrueVIS VG-640 wide-format inkjet printer/cutter after seeing it at a Creative Centre Experience Day at Roland DG UK’s headquarters in Clevedon. “As an existing Roland user I know that Roland’s service is second to none,” he comments. “The TrueVIS VG-640’s speed and quality are great and the RIP is almost identical to the VersaCAMM’s so I knew it would be easy to use. You know what you’re getting with Roland, and that’s a quality machine.” As a direct result of the TrueVIS installation in February, Bow Design is now producing work for seven supermarket branches, including window graphics, point of sale, internal hanging signs, filling station graphics and more – with new Easter displays about to be installed. The TrueVIS – supplied by Roland reseller printMAX – also prints and cuts stickers at an incredible rate, as Matthew Anderson discovered. “The week before the TrueVIS was installed I printed 100 stickers on our older machine in 39 minutes. A week later, on the new TrueVIS, I printed 100 stickers in nine minutes. We now have two operational Roland machines, running all day every day, and I’ve calculated production has increased by 72 per cent.” The next step for Bow Design is to open a stunning showroom for potential customers and partners, inspired by Roland’s Creative Centre. With media samples from Metamark, the company is using digital wall coverings, window graphics and other signage and display work to create an inviting space with the wow factor. The new machine is key to this project. “The TrueVIS is perfect, it hasn’t missed a beat,” says Matthew Anderson. “It also looks nice in our new showroom!” www.bowdesign.co.uk • www.rolanddg.co.uk

Bursali Towels “We believe that our printed towels are by far the best quality in the UK, in fact, the world...” It’s a bold statement, but Steve Vallender has the experience, expertise and track record to back this up. And thanks to buying a sparkling new, outstanding high-speed transfer sublimation printer, he’s looking to ensure that Bursali Towels UK Ltd remain ahead of the pack. Steve, Sales and Marketing Director for Bursali, was asked just what makes Bursali different to competitors: “There are a number of reasons”, he states, before adding, “for a start we have a huge range of towels and towelling products compared to others — from super luxury to budget and everything in between, and in many colours. We are also proud to be the only towel company in UK that produces towels in-house. We already supplied printed towels from abroad, but that takes between five and 16 weeks to deliver, and so we saw an opportunity to do this ourselves in the UK and deliver to the customer within seven days. “This gives us outstanding quality control and also makes supply to the UK market quick, easy and enables us to enhance our reputation for excellent customer service. Nothing helps you
to grow a business more than a great product and great service” At the heart of Bursali’s production growth will be the DGI FT-1908 sublimation printer that they recently purchased from Barnsleybased Sabur. The DGI FT-1908 is designed for high production environments and companies such as Bursali, it hosts eight state-of-the-art Panasonic print heads, a variable droplet with high density sublimation inks and easy fill bulk ink system, and also a built-in drying system. Steve spotted the printer at a Print Wear and Promotion Trade Fair in January. Aaron Burton, Sabur’s Digital Development Director spoke at length with Steve about a new product that they had just launched which he felt would interest us and benefit our company. Aaron was asked about the new high-speed sublimation printer that he had supplied to Bursali. He commented, “You only have to speak to Steve or visit the Bursali website to see the quality of what they produce and the enthusiasm for what they do. Indeed, some of the printed towels on the website are even mistaken for actual photographs! A sign of the quality of what they produce. The DGI FT-1908 will be installed by us to help capacity and

reduce production costs.” Bursali Towels UK Ltd has quickly grown into major towel suppliers within the UK and overseas thanks to their UK base and showroom, and their ability to produce and host stock here. All that, whilst having factories in several overseas countries, too. It means that turnaround times are rapid and has ensured that Bursali continue to develop and grow. Much of Bursali’s UK business comes from the development and manufacture of towels, bathrobes and towelling products for many well-known iconic brands, smaller niche customers, plus promotional towels for a whole variety of clients, too. www.bursali.co.uk • www.sublimationinks.com

Central Foiling invests with DigiFav B2 Laminator Central Foiling has topped off a £150,000 company-wide investment programme with the addition of a DigiFav-B2 Pro Laminator from Terry Cooper Services. The Birmingham operation, founded by Jamie Boland in 2003, specialises in foil blocking, die-cutting and duplexing, as well as offering bespoke solutions to the print and design industry. There are ten employees at the £400,000 turnover firm. After reviewing operations Boland decided to add a mezzanine floor to increase floor space and house the new laminator. He explains: “We manage a lot of multi-process jobs; two-colour foil blocking, three-colour foil blocking, duplex, die-cutting etc. That means work can be on the shop floor for days, even weeks. Adding the mezzanine floor enables us to spread some of the processes out and open up more floor space. It also streamlines the workflow and makes planning a lot easier.
“At the same time we wanted to add lamination to the processes we can complete in house. Before were we sending much of the work out and that involves additional time and cost.” He continues: “We liked the DigiFav-B2 Pro because it was a substantially built system with a compact footprint. It has been very positive so far. We have had no problems with it. In fact, we recently put a 1,000 run job on it which was then foiled. This took five hours whereas previously it would have taken at least three days. “We didn’t make the investment with any kind of return in mind but it has allowed us to add another regular process that we can complete in house. We can now offer our existing customers a wider range of service choices. We are also going to look at what else it can do to expand what we offer.” The 30mpm SRA3 DigiFav-B2 Pro is designed
to handle, protect and laminate all kinds of digital job prints. The secure high-speed performance system features a touch screen user-friendly interface, quick fast film reel loading, automatic balance heat temperature and pressure or intuitive device adjustments. With its solid steel build, top-level hardware, electronic components and calendar finishing treatments, it is designed to support quickchange overs. www.terrycooperservices.co.uk

The company, which is supporting the campaign for a second year, has released a range of promotional merchandise and marketing materials, including flags, banners, bunting, balloons and aprons, all adorned with the LYLM logo. Now in its 7th year, Love Your Local Market, which takes place from 17th – 31st May with the theme ‘Close to Your Heart’, is the annual initiative which grew out of the Portas review in 2012 as a one day event. During the two week campaign 3000 events, taking place across 17 countries, will showcase innovation and celebrate heritage, culture, produce, crafts and food. We are proud to be supporting the Love Your Local Market campaign and hope as many markets in the UK as possible will get involved. The promotional merchandise just goes to reinforce the message that we should all feel pride in our markets and support them whenever we can — and particularly in this special week.” Minister for High Streets, Jake Berry MP said: “Love Your Local Market reflects markets as part of the historical fabric of our communities and that they have an important role in their future. SOMETHING TO SHARE…? What a snorter
Two friends were chatting. “I’ve just bought a pig!” said the first. “But where will you keep it?” asked the second. “Your yard’s much too small for a pig!” “I’m going to keep it under my bed,” replied the first. “But what about the smell?” “He’ll soon get used to that.”

This salesman wins the lottery and decides to buy the nicest car he could find. He buys a Ferrari. It went 320 mph, had a V-12 engine, and went from 0-60 in three seconds. He thought nobody would be able to pass him. He decided to show his car off around town. He cruised into Macky Dees car park and stopped next to an old guy on a moped. The old guy says, “Nice car you have there can I take a look inside.” The man says, “Sure look around all you want.” When the old guy came out he said the car was alright. The guy who owned the Ferrari was pissed. His car was more than alright. So he decided to show the old man what his car could do. He sped out of the car park and accelerated to 140 mph. Just as the guy thought he had lost the old man he saw a black dot in his rear view mirror and it was gaining on him. IT WAS THE OLD GUY ON THE MOPED. The moped passed the Ferrari. The guy in the Ferrari was like “No way.” He then sped up to 240 mph and dusted the moped. But just as the guy in the Ferrari thought he had it made he saw a black dot in his rear view mirror and it was gaining on him. IT WAS THE OLD GUY ON THE MOPED. The moped passed him again. The guy in the Ferrari was getting mad, how could a moped do this. The guy then said, “That’s it” and floored it. He blazed past the old man going

IT WAS THE OLD GUY ON THE MOPED. There was nothing the guy in the Ferrari could do. He was going as fast as he could. But this time the guy on the moped didn’t pass him; it hit the back of his car. The guy in the Ferrari stopped immediately and ran to the old man. Amazingly the old man was still alive. The guy asked the old man if there was anything he could do. The old man replied, “Unhook my braces off of your mirror.”
Idle Talk
During WW II an American soldier had been on the front lines in Europe for three months, when he was finally given a week of R&R. He caught a supply boat to a supply base in the south of England, and then caught a train to London. The train was extremely crowded and he could not find a seat. He was dead on his feet and walked the length of the train looking for any place to sit down. Finally he found a compartment with seats facing each other; there was room for two people on each seat. On one side sat only a proper looking, older British lady, with a small dog sitting in the empty seat beside her. ‘Could I please sit in that seat?’ he asked. The lady was insulted. ‘You bloody Americans are so rude’, she said, ‘can’t you see my dog is sitting there’? He walked through the train once more and still could not find a seat. He found himself back at the same place. ‘Lady I love dogs have a couple at home - so I would be glad to hold your dog if I can sit down’, he said. The lady replied, ‘You Americans are not only rude you are arrogant’. He leaned against the wall for a time, but was so tired he finally said, ‘Lady, I’ve been on the front lines in Europe for three months with not a decent rest for all that time. Could I please sit there and hold your dog?’ The lady replied, ‘You Americans are not only rude and arrogant, you are also obnoxious.’ With that comment, the soldier calmly stepped in, picked up the
dog, threw it out the window, and sat down. The lady was speechless. An older, neatly dressed Englishman sitting across on the other seat spoke up. ‘Young man, I do not know if all you Americans fit the lady’s description of you or not. But I do know that you Americans do a lot of things wrong. You drive on the wrong side of the road, you hold your fork with the wrong hand, and now you have just thrown the wrong bitch out of the window.’
Pocket Wife
A man was at the bar and asked for a shot and so the bartender gave him the drink the man drank it then looked in his pocket. Then the man asked for another so the bartender again gave it to him then after he took the drink the man looked in his pocket. The man asked for another drink and did the same thing. Then the bartender asked the man why he kept looking in his pocket, and the man said there is a picture of my wife in there and when she starts looking good that’s when I will go home.
Field Salesman
A man is driving down a country road when he spots a copier salesman standing in the middle of a huge field of grass. He pulls the car over to the side of the road and notices that the salesman is just standing there, doing nothing, looking at nothing. The man gets out of the car, walks all the way out to the salesman and asks him, “Ah excuse me, but what are you doing?” The salesman replies, “I’m trying to win a Nobel Prize.” “How?” asks the man, puzzled. “Well I heard they give the Nobel Prize to people who are out standing in their field.”

Seven Word Obituaries
An old lady walked into a newspaper office. She approached an employee and said that her husband had died and that she would like to have an obituary appear in the paper. The employee gave her a form and told her to write the obituary on it. She wrote, “John W. Worth died Saturday, April 2nd at his home. Services are at The Baptist Church at 3 P.M.” The employee looked at the form and said, “I’m sorry, but obituaries are limited to seven words apiece. The woman took another form and wrote, “Earl died. ‘57 Astra van for sale.
Stuff I should have learnt earlier
1 Some people are working backstage, some are playing in the orchestra, some are on stage singing, some are in the audience as critics and some are there to applaud. Know who and where you are. 2 Never give yourself a haircut after three margaritas. 3 When baking, follow directions. When cooking, go by your own taste. 4 Never continue dating anyone who is rude to the waiters and doesn’t like dogs/cats. 5 Good sex should involve laughter. Because think about it, it is funny. 6 You need only two tools. WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn’t, use the tape. 7 The three most essential words for a healthy, vital relationship ‘Sorry’ and ‘You’re right.’ 8 Everyone seems normal until you get to know them. 9 When you make a mistake, make amends immediately. It’s easier to eat humble pie while it’s still warm. 10 The only really good advice that I remember my mother ever gave me was, ‘Go! You might meet somebody!’ 11 If he/she says that you are too good for him/her- -believe it.

Nick H – The Riddler
Dave the printer is a very untidy man, in his desk his paper samples are all mixed up together. There are 14 RED sheets, 10 BLUE sheets and 6 WHITE sheets. There has been a power cut in his print shop and it is completely dark in his office. What is the minimum number of pages that Dave should take out of his drawer to be sure that he has at least two sheets of the same colour? Answer: There are three different colours, so he must take out at least four sheets of paper to be sure of a matching colour.

High Flyer
The photographer for a national magazine was assigned to get photos of a great forest fire. Smoke at the scene was too thick to get any good shots, so he frantically called his home office to hire a plane. “It will be waiting for you at the airport!” he was assured by his editor. As soon as he got to the small, rural airport, sure enough, a plane was warming up near the runway. He jumped in with his equipment and yelled, “Let’s go! Let’s go!” The pilot swung the plane into the wind and soon they were in the air. “Fly over the north side of the fire,” said the photographer, “and make three or four low level passes.” “Why?” asked the pilot. “Because I’m going to take pictures! I’m a photographer, and photographers take pictures!” said the photographer with great exasperation. After a long pause the pilot said, “You mean you’re not the instructor?”
