SIGNS EXPRESS BUYS EPSON SURECOLOR SC-S80600 Signs Express (Nottingham) has invested in an Epson SureColor SCS80600 to streamline production, enhance efficiency and elevate quality. The operation was established seven years ago and has built up a diverse and prestigious local and national client base. It includes some of Nottingham’s most successful businesses and organisations such as Nottingham Trent University and Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club. It has been enjoying an increase in demand for wider width work which drove the decision to invest in an Epson SureColor SC-S80600. Mikey Walker, workshop and fabrications manager, explains: “Our previous printer could print widths up to 1250mm but that meant there were joins in any printed panels larger than the 1250mm. So, we looked around at other printers with a larger bed. We chose the Epson SureColor SC-S80600 after it was recommended by another Signs Express franchise.” Signs Express’s 64 inch Epson SureColor SC-S80600 system features a combined precision media feeding system and high performance Dual-Array PrecisionCore® TFP print head, that supports enhanced productivity. Its uses Epson UltraChrome® GS3 nine colour solvent ink – including a red solvent along with the option for white or metallic silver inks – for outstanding photographic print quality, durability, and media compatibility. Mikey says: “The main advantage for us was the fact the Epson prints on media up to 1550mm wide which is now a staple of our production. It is a lot quicker with the double heads fitted and its multiple pass modes. Also important was the fact it had the front and back take up rollers as standard.” The results possible also spoke for themselves. He adds: “We were impressed

with the print quality and the ink usage. Its ease of use makes a big difference, too, and I have personally found that the cleaning modes and heating times are a lot better now.” As for the impact it is making Mikey states: “Since it was installed, we have found it to be just what we wanted in a printer. The quality is superior and the setup to print time has improved greatly.” Signs Express’s Epson SureColor SC-S80600 was supplied by RGB UK. Marketing Director, Chris Hope says: “Signs Express’s requirements included an outdoor signage capable printer that could deliver high quality output at high volume production. www.epson.co.uk

ANTALIS DONATES SILVER DIGITAL FOR CHARITY LINK CALENDAR When Antalis were asked to donate paper for the printing of a fundraising calendar, they were only too happy to help. Printing and production of the calendar has also been supplied free of charge by Antalis customer Full Square Ltd. Antalis donated Silver Digital Matt 200gsm in SRA3 for the printing of the first 250 copies of the calendar. NEW ADVENTURE FOR AD-VENTURE SIGN AND IMAGE In one of the most challenging years ever for people and businesses, it is heartening to be able to talk about the creation of a new business. Which, in itself, is supporting the formation and growth of other new businesses. Steve Wallwork and Colin Washbourne have set up Ad-Venture Sign and Image in Consett in the North East. Specialising in delivering sign, print and display services to companies large and small in the local area and beyond. Steve explains, “My previous company was a large sign-maker. Which unfortunately had to stop trading in March of this year. Along with my friend and colleague Colin, we decided we had the knowledge, skills, and contacts to be able to set up a smaller version of something similar. We couldn’t have picked a harder time to do this. However, with the support of local companies like YPS, and by focusing on helping other companies that are also setting up. We are steadily establishing ourselves and are very positive for the future.” Ad-Venture Sign and Image approached Newcastle based Your Print Specialists (YPS). YPS had supplied a Mimaki JV33 printer to Steve’s previous company. “We were very impressed with both the printer and YPS. YPS is very supportive and is only ever a short trip or a call away. With a helpful and positive response to any questions or issues we have. They are also extremely helpful in terms of understanding our business requirements and identifying and specifying the right equipment for what we need” says Steve. Furthermore, as a start-up, space was a premium. After discussing with YPS, it was agreed the best solution would be an integrated print and cut machine from Mimaki and a laminator from Vivid. “The Mimaki CJV150 is ideal for us. It provides fantastic quality print output and accurate cutting all in the same machine. Not only does this save vital space, but it also saves time in our workflow and allows us to schedule jobs from start to finish without intervention” he says. The company specialises in a broad range of cut vinyl, Foamex and Dibond signage solutions. In addition to office graphics, vehicle wraps and safety signage. With the Mimaki print and cut, Vivid laminator and another cutter for the board products, Ad-Venture Sign and Image is well placed to deliver both simple and complex signage solutions, quickly and cost effectively. In addition to the print and cut solution, Ad-Venture Sign and Image has also invested in the YPS Business in a Box. This consists of an Epson SC F-500 24” dye-sublimation printer and a PixMax heat press. Steve explains, “We looked at this solution and felt that it offered us something a bit different. For companies that are looking for very high quality, tamper proof signage. The Epson solution allows us to print directly onto objects, meaning the images cannot be peeled or scratched off. Finally, the flexibility and additional options this provides means

we can talk about a much broader range of applications with our customers.” Georgia Brown, Sales Director at YPS, adds, “Ad-Venture Sign and Image is a great combination of a new start-up company run by experienced and established people. To conclude, Steve Wallwork says, “It’s very early days for us and we could hardly have picked a more difficult time to set up a new business. However, with the support, we have received from YPS and the positive feedback we have had from customers, we are confident that we can establish ourselves as a leading provider of signage solutions in our local area and beyond.” www.adventuresigns.co.uk

RELATIONSHIP WITH IFS SEALED DEAL FOR SPOT ON PRINT It was Spot on Print’s longstanding relationship with Intelligent Finishing Systems that was the key convincer in its latest investment in a Durselen UD-04 drill. The family run operation produces direct mail, folders, leaflets and corporate brochures, stationery and packaging on a Heidelberg SpeedMaster XL75 litho press and an HP Indigo digital press. It works with a diverse range of sectors from animal health, banking, the music industry, local schools and charities. “It was quite a simple decision,” explains Darren Lewis, managing director of the High Wycombe general commercial printer that has been in operation since 1988. “We needed to replace an ageing drill that completed a core process in the work we do. It was essential to maintain

the continuity, so we needed a straight forward replacement.” He continues: “We trust IFS and the systems they install. For us it was about choosing a supplier where we have a strong relationship and we know they will help us if ever it is needed. It is all about the people. That for me was the most important thing.” Suited to all standard applications, the Durselen UD-04 drill features four individually adjustable drill heads, a sliding table with programme trim, spacers for easy set-up of standard hole patterns in A4 und A5 and gliding coasters for easy relocation. Social distancing restrictions were observed during the installation and Lewis adds: “Everything went very smoothly.” www.ifsl.uk.com

MORGANA EVABIND PLUS FOR BROADMOOR HOSPITAL The Occupational Therapy and Rehabilitation Services at Broadmoor Hospital, managed by West London NHS Trust, has installed a Morgana EvaBind Plus perfect binding system in order to finish a variety of booklets and reports for both staff and patients, following a competitive tender process. The service produces a variety of reports and documentation for the Trust. They also use both print and finishing equipment to train patients as part of their rehabilitation to give them skills that they can use outside of the hospital. Venus Kan, Clinical Lead Occupational Therapy & Vocational Services, and her staff were so delighted with the installation that she wrote a message to Martin Baggott, Technical Support at Morgana Systems: “I am writing to say thank you to your service and the delivery of the fantastic binder machine. “Your service was faultless and we really appreciate the communications we had with you. Additionally, I would like to thank you for your help and support when we came across a minor technical problem. My staff have commented how patient you were with us and then you took into consideration our staff and patients’ needs prior to giving us advice. “Our patients and staff will now be able to provide a better printing service to our Trust.” The increase in short run digitally printed

material at the hospital fuelled the need for a quick, compact and easy to use perfect binding machine. The unit speeds up production of work that had been largely bound by hand, with stab stiches and binding tape. The Morgana EvaBind Plus is ideal for the short to medium run environment, offering a simple but highly effective soft cover book production system. With the professional multi-layer glue assembly, including side glue rollers, up to 240 books can be produced per hour. The system is controlled and operated through a central operator panel. By pressing the start button the binding process runs in fully automatic mode. A

fume extractor is integrated and can be connected with a flexible hose to any outlet. The unique spine preparation with a powerful slitting, sheet fanning and dedicated side gluing device allows the glue to penetrate for maximum adhesion for the sheets to be bound. The integral dust extractor, with bag, comes as standard to catch any dust from the milling process. The binding method can be selected for padding or cover binding. The sheets to be bound are held tightly in the clamp of the binding carrier by a pneumatic drive system. The clamp moves across the slitting/ fanning device (on/off selectable) and the glue assembly into the cover clamp section. A pneumatic driven cover attachment and side pressing unit finishes the publication for a professional appearance. The cover attachment can be set up in relation to thickness of spine and substrate of cover, while the pneumatic system is silent running. The machine also needed to comply with the strict health and safety regulations at the hospital. Commenting on the selection of the Morgana device, Venus added: “Safety is critical here. The unit was preferred to other solutions because glue is used rather than staples. With the new binder we would hope to be able to attract more NHS work for our small but very capable department.” www.morgana.co.uk

PETER SCOTT PRINTERS: TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION Printing company Peter Scott Printers has started an apprenticeship scheme to train up the next generation of printing professionals. Peter Scott Printers, working with North Lancs Training Group, has created an opportunity for Lancashire’s young printing stars of tomorrow. They will be teaching new apprentice Waqas Ahmed all about the many services that Peter Scott Printers offer. Apprentices with this firm can expect to learn about all aspects of the business. That covers digital and lithographic printing, finishing, cutting, foil blocking and embossing. Mr Ahmed has already been on a forklift training course and bosses at Peter Scott Printers have much more planned for the future. Chris Sherratt, North Lancs Training Group, commented: “When we choose an organisation to place an apprentice, we make sure the company has a good reputation and is offering a balanced apprenticeship scheme. Peter Scott Printers is now in its 60th year of trading. That makes them one of the oldest and most experienced printing companies in the North of England. It provides an ideal environment for an apprentice because they can share an enormous amount of knowledge and experience.” Finding staff with experience and knowledge of the commercial printing industry is no easy task in today’s world of online communications. That’s why the progressive printing firm is taking matters into its own hands. It makes good business sense in several ways. According to North Lancs Training Group 75% of apprentice employers say it has helped them cut recruitment costs and 89% of apprentice employers say they make their business more productive. Joanne Hindley, Commercial Director of Peter Scott Printers, commented:

6

“Starting an apprenticeship programme made a lot of sense. This way we can train up a new member of staff with the precise skills we need. It’s great for the apprentice too because they come away with a brand-new career path ahead of them.” Peter Scott Printers are very happy with their new apprentice. Bosses at Peter Scott Printers say they chose Waqas Ahmed because of his enthusiasm and drive. With a positive attitude and a determination to learn from every experience, this young man is setting a great example for future apprentices at this brilliant Burnley printing company. www.peterscottprinters.com

VeloBlade Volta gives users the ability to cut anything from kiss cut labels up to 10mm thickness. Whereas VeloBlade Nexus is a range of wide format digital die cutters comprising an optional CNC Router for cuts up to 25mm. Richard Marlow, Sales Director at Vivid told us, Throughout the pandemic we’ve seen many of our customers seeking ways to diversify and offer services they’ve previously had to outsource. Consistently, one of the biggest outsourcing costs we’ve seen is die cutting. By extending the VeloBlade range we’re now able to provide businesses a variety of systems with different capabilities. From kiss cutting right through to 25mm, there is a system to suit every application”.

INTRODUCTION TO VELOBLADE VOLTA

Available in two sizes, 600mm x 400mm and 600mm x 900mm, the Volta range comprises four systems; VeloBlade Volta 64, VeloBlade Volta 69, VeloBlade Volta 64+ and VeloBlade Volta 69+. The key difference in these systems being the + range has a cut depth of up to 10mm with optional oscillating tool whereas the standard Volta 64 and 69 cut up to 2mm. All of these systems give you the ability to completely automate your production. With 150mm of auto-feed sheet capacity as well as roll fed functionality, the Volta systems are designed to give you the best possible finishes, efficiently and cost effectively. The fully automated workflow provides exactly that, with its barcode reader meaning Volta

MORE ABOUT VELOBLADE NEXUS – WIDE FORMAT DIGITAL DIE CUTTING

Wide format print finishing has increased in demand during the pandemic, and what better way to compliment this than with wide format digital die cutting. Starting from 1800mm x 1600mm and comprising numerous larger systems, VeloBlade Nexus opens doors of opportunity within the wide format industry. Compared with the rest of the VeloBalde range, VeloBlade Nexus provides its users with the opportunity to work with the widest variety of stocks, thanks to its CNC Router being able to cut up to 25mm. These substrates include; Dibond, MDF, fabrics, acrylic and much more. Also, you can

still produce everything you would with the Volta range, the cut is that intricate and accurate! Another fantastic feature the Nexus boasts is its automatic cut depth setting. This drastically increases setup and operating speed, making the operator’s job easier and more efficient. Efficiency was one of the key considerations when this system was put together, also contributing to an efficient workplace is the rotating bed that enables roll and sheet fed production.

NEW MIMAKI ‘100 SERIES’ ROLL-TO-ROLL UV AND SOLVENT INKJET PRINTERS LAUNCHED Mimaki’s exclusive distributor for the UK and Ireland, Hybrid Services, has announced the release of the new ‘100 Series’; two entry level roll to roll inkjet printers – the UJV100-160 (UV model) and the JV100-160 (solvent model). The new models combine high quality printing with high productivity, all at minimal cost to the user. The UJV100-160 is set to be commercially available in December 2020, while the JV100-160 is expected to follow in January 2021. The new Mimaki UJV100-160 uses lower cost LUS-190 UV ink which cures immediately after being exposed to UV light, allowing a faster turnaround without the need for a degassing period after printing. The LUS-190 ink can be printed onto not only PVC, but also uncoated substrates such as PET film and paper. The new system is designed to deliver the ideal solution for print businesses to introduce UV printing technology into their production line. The new Mimaki JV100-160 uses Mimaki’s popular and highly regarded SS21 ink set which allows printers to create a multitude of applications, whether for indoor or outdoor use. Available in both a dual CMYK four colour mode and an eight colour mode, the inks are a proven solution for delivering long lasting, vibrant prints. Hybrid’s Managing Director, Brett Newman anticipates strong uptake of the new models. “The new UV and solvent ‘100 Series’ printers represent the ideal combination of features and performance at a highly competitive price point,” he states. “Employing proprietary technology found on models that sit further up the Mimaki product line, users will benefit from improved operation, productivity and task automation.” In line with the Mimaki tagline “Expert Printing Made Easy”, the new printers are fully equipped with features that improve usability for their operators. Both printers in the ‘100 Series’ utilise Mimaki’s new DAS (Dot Adjustment System) feature, developed to support a streamlined, efficient printing process. Dot adjustments are normally carried out manually every

time the user changes the media type, however, this new function performs drop position adjustment for bi-directional printing and media feed compensation automatically, to ensure perfect alignments and print quality. Bert Benckhuysen, Senior Product Manager, from Mimaki Europe comments, “Mimaki always prides itself in introducing printing technology that excels when it comes to efficiency and high quality and these two models fulfil both. The ‘100 Series’ are also versatile printers and users benefit from the flexibility to produce an array of applications, from vibrant wallpapers to high quality signboards.” Mimaki’s core technologies such as NCU (Nozzle

Check Unit), NRS (Nozzle Recovery System) and MAPS4 (Mimaki Advanced Pass System4), will all be available as standard features on the new printers to help achieve continuous and reliable production. Furthermore, Mimaki has included its new RasterLink7 RIP software with the series, which incorporates Harlequin RIP® developed by Global Graphics Software Ltd. as a core engine. With this new engine, the RIP time can be reduced by up to 25% and for even greater ease of use, variable data printing and favourite settings have been added to the RIP, which is included free of charge with the new printers. www.hybridservices.co.uk • 01270 501900.

EPSON NEW SURECOLOR SC-T3100M AND SC-T5100M For businesses that need a multi-function large format printer but have restricted workspaces, Epson announces the launch of the SureColor SC-T3100M and SC-T5100M three in one printers. Compact, reliable and affordable, the 24 inch SC-T3100M and 36 inch SC-T5100M plotters do not compromise on capability. The printer series features a simple top loading scanning workflow with a 600dpi scanner that accurately replicates documents (up to 2.72M) into multiple formats and sends them securely to various destinations, as well as scaling original copies. A tray supports scanned documents to avoid any valuable originals being damaged on the floor. The range has been designed to be dust free as standard – print quality and internal components are protected, which makes it the ideal solution for environments such as construction site offices and high footfall areas. The compact design of the SCT3100M means it can fit into the smallest of spaces and enables it to be transported from one location to another with ease. With a low total cost of ownership, users will have peace of mind that printing costs will remain affordable for the lifetime of the printer. Epson offers two sizes of ink cartridge to meet the needs of the customer, whether a low volume, occasional user or those with a larger demand for regular high quality prints. The series benefits from all pigment based inks providing colour stability and water resistance meaning they are ideal for poster production for damp environments such as shop windows. The superior lightfastness of the inks is useful for technical drawings and documents that will need to be archived for long periods. The permanent printhead provides assurance to the user of no unexpected costs down the line. Both the SC-T3100M and SC-T5100M are supported by the Epson Cloud Solution PORT platform. Epson Cloud Solution PORT is available

for free and enables users to update and monitor equipment across several sites, from the production floor to remote locations. James Cleere, Managing Director of Snap Products commented, “we’re very excited to introduce directto-garment printing to our service offering as it comes with many benefits - think vibrant, photographic quality print that feels part of the textile. DTG printed garments can be washed over and over again without fading, have great stretchability and make full colour printed bags, clothes and face masks available from very low order quantities.” Contact sales@snapproducts.co.uk for more information.

PIXEL PROPHET

PIXEL PROPHET

WELL, WHAT DID YOU EXPECT?

Martin Christie reminds us when you would get a birthday card from your favourite aunt, not just a smiley face on social media. This was much anticipated as more than the actual message as folded inside would likely be a note — a real note — a pound note when such a thing existed and was worth something, later maybe a fiver.

A

lthough you were pretty sure it would be there, there was always that slight moment of anxiety that it might not be, and the disappointment would be awful. After the build-up of the envelope dropping from the letterbox, tearing open the sealed flap and, peeling apart the pages, you find … nothing; well, nothing of any value you could actually use. It may be a bit harsh, but that was very much my reaction opening up Adobe’s October updates to Photoshop, version 22.0. If you haven’t got the one with the flamingos, you haven’t updated yet, or your shortcut is taking you to the previous version. Ever since the former Creative Suite became Cloud-based, one of the essential selling points of the subscription has been the continued development of the application, improving performance and that wonderful modern word functionality. To be fair, underneath the bonnet, there are a host of performance enhancements, the fixing of bugs and issues that have cropped up, particularly in conflicts with Windows 10 updates which often appear to be on a collision course. In fact Version 22.0 only works with Windows 10 and not previous Microsoft operating systems. But then, as most of the bugs seem to be related to Windows 10, that’s not necessarily a problem. It just means that you will be missing out on the latest headline features, which are, compared to previous, less than exciting despite the enthusiasm of some online tutorials. As I always stress, other image editing software is available. Still, as Adobe is the established industry standard in pixel manipulation, as well as creation and design, it is inevitably the centre of attention. What all modern programs share is an increasing use of artificial intelligence, that is anticipating what the user actually wants to achieve. We became aware of predictive text long ago, but that was just a tiny step in AI terms compared to the giant leaps it is taking now. Adobe’s version is called Sensei, which I find is a Japanese word meaning teacher. However, the way the process works is actually rather more learning by example, taking in the collective experience of the user to better serve its purpose. The result of this is that digital tasks with images which were previously laborious or 14

That’s why there is always going to be a conflict of expectation between what people see and what we can print. nearly impossible become achievable because the software has already second-guessed what you were trying to do. So we have the adding or deleting of items through Content-Aware, and Select and Mask for example, which becomes easier to explain when you get your head around the fact that it is matching mathematical formula, not confused by actually looking at the picture. It’s just about decisions comparing one pixel and another. These aids have been really useful for print on demand cutting down studio time needed to alter and improve the customer’s images or artwork, and enabling tasks that only require basic training rather than an extensive knowledge of Photoshop and pixel protocol. Version 22.0 is work in progress. It doesn’t do anything that previous updates can’t do, just simplifies some of the actions and, as a result, adds more dropdowns to an already cluttered workspace. Because it has visual impact, Sky Replacement

is one of the new features headlined by Adobe and its tutors. But cutting out and replacing features has been quite easy for some years, and as the sky is never the same colour as the ground, it isn’t exactly magic and rather more just a gimmick. Some of its more extravagant examples have already been banned on some photography sites. Enhancing a dramatic sky, or improving a washed out one, is one thing. Fantasy Island is another. I mean if you don’t need to get out of bed until midday to create a stunning sunrise, it rather defeats the point of capturing the moment, which is the heart of traditional photography. It doesn’t have to be taken with the best camera, but at least it has to be a little bit real. I’m reminded of the classic Fawlty Towers episode where Basil challenges a complaining customer “Well, may I ask what you expected to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically?” DECEMBER 2020-JANUARY 2021 • QUICK PRINT PRO

PIXEL PROPHET

I’m sure once the novelty wears off, we may get back to a few more useful features, but the dramatic colours of skies, like sunsets and rainbows bring us back to the ongoing topic of RGB versus CMYK. The previous two issues are online if you want to backtrack to catch up, dealing with the basic facts, and the difference in appearance between the two. This is more about what you can do with them. The Achilles heel of CMYK for editing is the limited range of colours available for adjustment compared to those available, and visible in RGB. That is why general customers — as well as designers — who only work online in RGB, have difficulty not only preparing their files for print but even understanding why it is different. Perhaps Adobe’s Sensei will come to our assistance in some way in some future update, but as print output is not a priority feature that may take some time, and adjustments need to be made entirely manually, by eye. Of course, it’s not even that simple, and at the risk of making you dizzy, I need to explain that there are several types of RGB. Standard Red Green Blue known as sRGB, is the colour space of the internet and represents the most colours that can be displayed. It’s designed to make monitor colours as consistent as possible and, as a result, is a bit of a compromise. Adobe RGB, or Adobe 1998, actually has a broader range of colours and is preferable for editing for print. More recently there is Pro Photo RGB which modern cameras can capture that has a wider gamut still. But most importantly, none of them can see as many colours as the human eye. That’s why there is always going to be a conflict of expectation between what people see and what we can print. It’s not just the difference between a bright screen and a hard copy print, but the colour information that the printer has to interpret at the end of the line. As so many images will have been downloaded from online sources, they will be in the least adjustable format, in sRGB. Even if it is an image taken with a very good camera, which gets more unlikely these days, it has probably been uploaded to a website or another device and processed from there. For a lot of general colour printing, these issues won’t be critical. Still, it’s important to be aware of them for the times when it is — dealing with particular corporate colours, as well as

art and serious photography. These are always jobs that require a little bit more attention than press and print. So if you are opening a file in Photoshop, the first important thing is to make sure your colour settings are appropriate as in Edit > Colour Settings. Make sure you are warned if the file has a colour profile embedded, and to preserve it if it does. That way even if the default profile is sRGB, if it has another colour profile attached, Photoshop will use that to edit. This is more likely with images that have already been manipulated and saved as Tiffs or PSDs, rather than your standard Jpegs. If you have a camera RAW file, which is the most adaptable for colour adjustment, you can assign an Adobe RGB profile as it comes unprocessed. RAW files are just the best thing in photography since the proverbial sliced loaf. If anyone who claims to know anything about digital imaging isn’t at least shooting originals in RAW, it’s a fairly good sign they don’t know what they are doing — even if they have a very good camera. The only professionals I know who still shoot Jpegs are some sports photographers who need to shoot loads of action shots quickly, and for whom the bulky uncompressed files are too slow to save. RAW files have the maximum amount of information in an image and are therefore huge and take a little to write to a memory card. RAW files will open automatically in Photoshop’s Camera RAW filter, but the beauty of working in RGB is that you can open any file in it, and now multiple files, and apply any adjustments to the whole batch. You find it in Filter>Camera Raw, and this opens a whole new dialogue box for far more tools, and more subtle manipulation, than was previously available — and even that was quite a lot! The same filters are available in Adobe Lightroom, although the working space is different and better suited to editing larger numbers of images at a time. Most other modern editing suites have similar features as the AI involved has become common. It was not available for older software, hence customers who may be using now dated programmes, or limited edition modern apps will not have anything like the same options, even if they know how to use them. There are far too many features in Camera

QUICK PRINT PRO • DECEMBER 2020-JANUARY 2021

RAW to go through individually here, but it is best to start with the basics, and then progressively work through to the more sophisticated, and the toolboxes are stacked approximately in this order. Basics start with the white balance, which is the colour temperature and tint of the image. Best not to do too much with this unless it is massively out as adjustments affect all of the colours in the picture. Better to look at exposure, if it is too dark, or shadows if it is too dense in some areas, or alternatively highlights and whites for the other extreme. Even these adjustments can be further tuned in Curves. There’s detail, sharpening and noise reduction which mostly concerns poorer quality camera images which unfortunately get more common as people expect miracles shooting on their phone in a dark room. There’s a before and after option so you can see exactly what changes are being made. It’s when you get to Colour Mixer it gets really interesting, and this is probably the most useful for making adjustments for print, even though Adobe probably didn’t introduce it primarily for this purpose. Previous readers will know I’ve mentioned this before, but I make no apologies for repeating myself as this little treasure is easily overlooked, tucked away that bit further down the toolbox. When you just need a bit of a tweak to make sure somebody’s face is not too red, or that dress is the right shade of blue and not too green, this is the place to go. Because you can separate the quality of Hue, Saturation and Luminance — all of which are just as vital to printed matter as they are to the display screen or the internet — instead of making big colour changes that alter much of the image, you can hone in on any one of 24 colour sliders each tuning one particular aspect. In many ways, it mimics the additive and subtractive nature of blending colours. The last tip which I probably should have listed first is to use Photoshop’s most useful feature, layers. Make a duplicate of the original before you commit to camera RAW changes then you still have the option of further editing by using the opacity of the new layer or any of the blending modes. It’s all about trying to match what comes out of the printer with what you can see on the screen. Understand that, and you will begin to grasp what the customer really expected! 15

MARK YOUNG SET STEER BLUETREE GROUP Bluetree Group has appointed Mark Young as Managing Director for the Print Division, tasked with driving the business forward. Eight years ago, Mark Young joined Bluetree Group as part of the artwork team. He climbed the ranks quickly, becoming Head of Studio and then Head of Route 1 Print where he has been for the past two years. Using all his experience from working across the business, Mark is now ready to take on his biggest challenge yet as the group’s Managing Director of Bluetree Print. This move comes as the group sees many dramatic operational developments throughout 2020. Bluetree Medical established in April this year is a new division for the business focused on manufacturing medical grade surgical masks for the NHS. Adam Carnell and James Kinsella, co-founders of Bluetree Group, have moved to central roles across both divisions with a focus on the larger developments for each side of the business.

“As James and I move to a more central position, we are thrilled to pass on the reigns of our print operations to someone who knows the business inside and out,” says Carnell, “We know that Mark is the person who can confidently lead our print division through all future developments.” During his time with Bluetree Group, Mark has been integral to the inner workings of the company, from studio and workflow to product launches and marketing. He is highly regarded across the entire Bluetree team but, more than that, he has developed critical relationships with a number of press manufacturers, including the team at Landa after a trip to Israel. Mark had this to say on the move, “Whilst it has been an incredibly difficult year within the industry, I’m very excited to be given this opportunity to help drive the company towards future growth. It was Adam and James that first interviewed me in 2012 and I’ve learned so much from working with them since. They’ve built an amazing team here, all of whom have helped me learn and develop over the years.” It’s an honour to be given this opportunity and I’m ready and more committed than ever to making Bluetree a success.” He goes on to say, “Bluetree Group is at a very significant junction in its life and I am delighted to get to work with the team, upholding Bluetree’s core values, as we move into a post-pandemic world.” www.bluetreegroup.co.uk

PRIMA YORKSHIRE CELEBRATE 20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY Prima Yorkshire a creative packaging company are celebrating their twenty year anniversary. After the sad demise of Bradford Boxmakers at the end of 1999, five members of staff decided to set-up Prima on their own. At the turn of the millennium they chose the company name, Prima, as it was the initials of the founding partners. They started their humble beginnings on 9th November 2000 with limited staff, run from a small factory in Girlington, Bradford. With a transparent and honest approach they carefully crafted the business based around quality, service and reliability and with a wealth of knowledge and expertise Prima continued to invest in better machines and employing more staff, some of which Prima are proud to say are still employed and have been for over 15 years. With an extensive product portfolio ranging from printed and plain folding cartons, corrugated cartons and point-of-sale, folders and pockets through to ring binders, PVC pockets and paper over-board boxes and folders all of which Prima is still serving clients with today.

16

Throughout this time three directors retired, Prima streamlined, and carried on investing, this time purchasing an impressive automatic die-cutter. With the new additional equipment came a welcomed move into a much larger factory closer to the centre of Bradford, where

they are located now. 2015 saw Jon Simms (pictured left) welcomed into the management team by the remaining directors, Andrew Birkinshaw (pictured centre) and Richard Cragg (pictured right). www.primayorks.co.uk

fully cured finish. During drying/curing, the water based solution is evaporated leaving the resin and pigment in place. t is a challenging time and printers have admirably risen to that challenge. They have focused their creativity and flexibility on exploring new markets, adding fresh capabilities and reviewing their existing operations. It has been inspiring to see the industry demonstrate its ability to transform, embrace new ways of working and look after its employees. Many commercial printers will have considered ways to futureproof their business. How they can lock in incremental revenue growth and make sure it is profitable. Wide format is a great way to go and Covid signage is another. While printers have been adapting their offering and broadening their market base our R&D team has been working on new products to support them. Our newest portfolio additions created to take us into new places in the signage arena are the SureColor SC-R5000 resin printer and the SureColor SC-V7000 flatbed UV printer. The resin printer, we believe, takes the technology a step further. The first benchmark is its image quality. Most people will see the Epson brand as offering the ultimate quality and critically the consistency of replicating that quality on a day to day basis. With the new resin ink we believe we are the only big manufacturer that has the full house of different ink sets – aqueous, eco solvent, dye sublimation, Direct 20

How well print has helped during the pandemic? Of course, we have seen how certain types of print have played a key role in communications throughout the pandemic – particularly with social distancing measures. We have also seen customers in the photographic sector performing well, for example in canvas production. For some operations who identified areas of opportunity and focused their energies on delivering the desired services the pandemic has enabled them to demonstrate the power of print. How using print will promote our end users and stimulate the bounce back? We have a number of customers that have been growing their business during the pandemic. Phil McMullin goes on to answers a few QPP readers questions. What opportunities or new print services are possible with the newly launched SureColor SC-R5000 and what does it do? It offers print service providers and creative design agencies the ability to produce a wide range of signage and high value applications with environmentally friendly, outstanding results. It is ideal for uncoated media and wallpapers and enables immediate lamination for same day delivery. How does the Epson resin ink work and does it differ from HP’s latex ink? Resin ink is a water-based ink with the base acting as a carrier solution for particles of resin and pigment. The resin ink is jetted to the substrate and subjected to heat to develop a

Epson has had resin ink technology for some years so why develop this now? The inclusion of resin into Epson’s large format line up has long been Epson’s intention. Now Epson has reinforced the R&D team for Commercial & Industrial Printing, we have been able to develop multiple new printers incorporating our core head and ink technologies, one of which is the R5000. What is the energy consumption of the R5000 printers? Energy consumption for resin ink products is higher than products using accelerated drying components such as solvent or photo-initiated inks but do bring environmental advantages in the form of reduced lamination requirements and a wider support of non PVC materials used in signage applications. Epson takes the challenge of sustainability and environmental impact very seriously with various deep rooted commitments embedded into our operations from design to supply, aiming to reduce our overall environmental impact. Please refer to the summary below that covers some of Epson’s efforts and engagements on the subject. As a global organisation, Epson is committed to improving its environmental engagement in all geographies across the world. In 2018, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved Epson’s global greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets. The initiative, which is a joint project between the CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI), and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), is working to recognise companies whose GHG reduction targets are in line with keeping a global temperature rise this century to well below two degrees Celsius, a central aim of the Paris Agreement. NEW CERTIFIED FRESH WATER BIODEGRADABLE BIOGLITTER The world’s leading eco glitter manufacturer, British company Ronald Britton Ltd, is set to significantly expand its certified fresh water biodegradable product offering with its new ‘Bioglitter™ SPARKLE GC’ technology. Early in 2019 Ronald Britton launched the ground breaking Bioglitter™ PURE product range which represented a significant milestone as it was the world’s first ‘TÜV Austria, OK biodegradable WATER’ certified glitter. This is the highest level of independent certification for fresh water biodegradability in the world, an achievement that still remains unequalled by any other glitter manufacturer. The Bioglitter™ SPARKLE GC product range has joined the list of ‘OK biodegradable WATER’ certified products offered by Ronald Britton, which is another step on the Bioglitter™ journey. The coating in the new Bioglitter™ SPARKLE GC products removes the acrylate plastic applied to the film, enabling the product to achieve the coveted fresh water biodegradable certification from TÜV. Stephen Cotton, commercial director at Ronald Britton said “This is a significant step for us. Getting our Bioglitter™ SPARKLE product lines certified to this level of biodegradable performance is something we have been striving to achieve for some time now. It goes without saying achieving the highest level of independent certification for fresh water biodegradability in the world is extremely difficult. We are so pleased to achieve this, it’s taken blood, sweat and tears!” Bioglitter™ SPARKLE GC is the brightest range of glitters Ronald Britton has to offer, indistinguishable from the appearance of metallic effect microplastic glitters. The new Bioglitter™ SPARKLE GC products will be available in January 2021. Andrew Thompson, technical director at Ronald Britton said “Being intimately involved in the glitter industry we could not ignore the part plastic glitter plays

COVER STORY: CARBON BALANCED CREATIVE PAPERS

in microplastic pollution, albeit a very small part in the overall context. We needed to tackle the problem and have been developing the Bioglitter™ range over almost a decade. We always thought it would be a long and complex task and we were not disappointed! Certification of Bioglitter SPARKLE GC does not mean the end of the Bioglitter™ journey, far from it. We still have plans to offer more effects and strive to continuously improve our Bioglitter™ product technology.” Many ‘so called eco glitters’ are now on the market, Ronald Britton is working with high street brands to use the registered Bioglitter™ logo to effectively comminute to consumers that their products are made with genuine Bioglitter™. Primark and Accessorize are two of many companies already using the logo on consumer products made with Bioglitter™ to great effect. www.discoverbioglitter.com • www.bioglitter.com

ROLAND COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY Roland DG has announced that its primers and inks for the Texart XT-640S-DTG printer are now ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX® certified. Inks and primers are only awarded the certification after a series of rigorous tests, which dissect if each individual ingredient in the chemical product meets strict conditions. As a result of the certification, the products will now be added to the OEKO-TEX® buying guide, the central sourcing platform for precertified articles and materials.  ECO PASSPORT is a globally recognised mechanism that guarantees to suppliers of textile chemical colourants and auxiliaries that the chemicals used in the printed image meet regulatory requirements. It means that Roland DG customers including sign, garment, and promotional goods manufacturers can confidently use the printer’s inks and primers in sustainable direct-to-garment print and production.  Customers expect eco-friendly solutions for textile production “Our customers respect and value this certificate as clear proof of sustainable textile production” says Encarna Luque, Senior Product Manager for Inks and Business Development in Textile and Decoration for Roland DG EMEA.  “As the global sustainability effort strengthens, governments, brands and consumers are demanding a higher standard of eco-friendly textile products. Many of our customers have an eco-conscious ethos and it’s imperative that they are able to tell their own clients that the textiles under their production have been made sustainably and meet regulatory demands.” “We are proud to be able to offer certified sustainable inks and primers for the Texart XT-640S-DTG printer, to act in response to our customer’s needs and play an active role in the global effort towards sustainability.” www.rolanddg.eu

Lead by example with this sensibly-sized signage. You know the drill, you put a couple out and your callers will either say, where do you get those from? Or our own favourite, I didn’t know you printed on A frames. Contact your trade supplier Sov Print for your POS Distancing A Frames. A simple, convenient and clear option to help create safe distancing in shops, workplaces or public spaces. These stand out signs fold away for storage and are easy to clean with a wipeable surface. Invest in a few Sov Print distancing PVC A frames. They are heavy duty, fold flat for storage and feature a waterproof image to face. Available from £11.00. Design options available. ICE BREAKER BUSINESS CARDS Don’t you just love dualpurpose print products? Well invest a little in some POS samples of your own and you will have a triple marketing whammy in your hands. We all know business starts with a business card and us printers are sometimes guilty of not having samples to hand. So the No.1 use for these icebreakers is as your own business card with your print business contact details on the reverse. Second use is as a promotional gift. With the changing weather your print prospects will keep a plastic card about their person or in their car. This delivers your name in front of potential print runs, plus being a bit of fun. That makes three reasons to be cheerful next time the temperature drops to freezing. Our partner in this project is Eye Catchers, always our first call for all types of plastic cards. www.eyecatchers.co.uk • sales@eyecatchers.co.uk • 01772 681 000

LET’S GET FRESH! TheMagicTouch introduces a new range of printable 100% polyester felt air fresheners. These unique affordable products offer a great opportunity to supply a vast range of potential markets. With the advantage of full colour printing, the lowest MOQ possible and the ability to produce quickly is a perfect marketing combination. Recent market research of the “air freshener” market in the UK highlights various trade suppliers with high MOQ, artwork and set-up costs and considerable delivery lead times. Using TheMagicTouch transfer process a personalised sample can be produced for customer evaluation and target marketing instantly. The double sided pre-cut sheets are available in round (six per sheet), square (six per sheet) and rectangular (eight per sheet) all costing only £1.60 per sheet. Template artwork is available to download from the website making the print process very easy on both sides if required. The air fresheners can be printed using either sublimation or toner based transfer paper such as the TTC transfer paper using standard CMYK printers. Once printed the customer can add their own choice of essential oil or fragrance to suit their preference. The oils are widely available on almost every high street or online and can be re-used time and time again due to the high absorption properties of the polyester felt. Each individual sheet includes the relevant number of hanging ribbons and clear bags for presentation or counter POS. Perfect for cars, homes, souvenirs, charities, sports clubs, associations and many more. They can also be used as a luggage/bag tag or a Christmas decoration. AZUTURA BRINGS PERSONALITY AND LOCALITY TO WALL MURALS Azutura has responded to a shift in its customer demographic owing to COVID-19 restrictions by creating a new personality driven wall mural service, using HP Latex printers to produce high quality artwork. The Durham based company says it is connecting with artists, photographers, designers and illustrators all over the world to tell a story through its work. Azutura has relied on HP printing solutions for many years and currently runs two HP Latex 570 printers and one HP Latex 315, alongside an older Latex machine. Water based, odourless HP Latex inks are certified to have low VOC emissions ensuring the safety of printed graphics in environments such as homes, hospitals and schools, while retaining vibrant colours. Its customer network has traditionally been split between the commercial sector, such as offices, and the domestic market, with shoppers choosing their perfect design and dimensions via its e-commerce website. However, with the COVID-19 shutdown pausing the majority of commercial orders, Azutura has focused on its customers who are improving their homes. “We ran a skeleton staff for a short period but business has picked up as people are looking to improve their homes with wall murals and wall decals,” says Azutura’s Artist Liaison, David Atkinson. “HP Latex ink is safe to use for use in domestic settings and HP branded wallpaper media is also easy to install and to clean - many of our customers install them in their bathrooms.” With the popularity of wall murals and decals increasing, Azutura wanted to offer something different from its competitors: a high quality service that features exclusive, designer artwork rather than relying on stock photography. By working with creators directly, it can tell a story. “We have partnered with over 100 artists, illustrators, designers and photographers so far and each of them is a real person,” says David. “We want our customers to get to know them through blog posts and interviews, and to make it easy to for them choose their favourite designs from each artist. “We are also creating a local connection. City skylines are a very popular

choice for wall murals but with stock photographs you tend to see the same images again and again. For example, we’re based in the north east where the Tyne Bridge is an iconic landmark; through the designs available on Azutura people can see brand new views and concepts by local creators, which give real personality to a space. We are actively looking for more artists, as many in the UK as possible - in every city and every town.” “HP Latex is the best choice for our brand,” he adds. “The quality of print is fantastic; every mural and decal is checked by hand and we hold everything to the same standard as if they were for our own homes. Our HP Latex printers are all very reliable and the speed of turnaround allows Azutura to offer next day delivery.” Mike Lewis, Latex Channel Account Manager, HP, comments: “Thanks to its low VOC levels, excellent colour accuracy and high quality results on a range of wall covering media, HP Latex is the ideal system for specialists like Azutura. But during challenging times, it’s also its versatility that allows users to change direction and launch innovative services like this.” www.azutura.com • www.hp.com

DTP EDINBURGH CHOOSE VELOBLADE TO AUTOMATE DIGITAL CUTTING Based in Edinburgh, family owned and run DTP specialise in providing bespoke print solutions to a range of markets. To enable them to diversify their offering and automate the production of intricate designs and bespoke packaging, they made the decision to partner with Vivid Laminating Technologies and invest in a VeloBlade 68 digital die-cutting system. Ever increasing sales volume meant the DTP team were spending too much time manually operating their laser cutter. They knew it was time to move as much production as possible to an automated system that would enable them to produce a high standard of product, but at a much faster rate. Alun Joseph, Managing Director at DTP said “the feed and delivery of the VeloBlade has allowed us to automate a process, which now frees up the team to be more effective elsewhere. Compared with our laser cutter, we are now able to produce a wider range of products to a more exacting standard”. With their laser cutter still in operation alongside their new VeloBlade 68, Alun detailed the production they’ve moved to the VeloBlade and why “we’ve been producing several small packaging items on the VeloBlade, a range of

30

beautifully digitally foiled boxes for hand soap on carton board and another box for mail order cakes made from 1.5mm microflute lined with Colorplan. Other jobs have included round cornered business cards, angle folded promotional flyers and pocket folders. The versatility of the system is great, the array of stocks as well as items we can produce is very impressive”. A long standing Vivid customer, DTP has had many systems from Vivid including a Magnum multi-finisher. Discussing why they chose Vivid and some past experiences, Alun told us “having worked with Vivid on a number of other systems, we know them to be very helpful with their aftercare and support. As this type of machine is becoming more prevalent in the market, Vivid’s price and knowledge of the system certainly drew us to them”. And, Alun hasn’t been disappointed on this project, with Vivid and the VeloBlade impressing him, “the system seems very well built and reliable. With the various tools, it is also a very capable machine that we look forward to doing much more with. The installation and training from Vivid was excellent with a very knowledgeable and engaged team”. www.vivid-online.com • 01530 510946

THE JOKE’S ON YOU

READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE? BIGFOOT’S COMB

What tree has the most hair? A fir tree!

GREAT WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT

All day I drill holes in metal and bolt them together. At first it’s boring, but then it’s riveting.

GOOD LIGHTS

A customer walked into our store looking for Christmas lights. I showed her our top brand, but— wanting to make sure each bulb worked—she asked me to take them out of the box and plug them in. I did, and each one lit up. “Great,” she said. I carefully placed the string of lights back in the box. But as I handed them to her, she looked alarmed. “I don’t want this box,” she said abruptly. “It’s been opened.”

WALLFLOWER

Why couldn’t the butterfly go to the fancy New Year’s Eve dance? It was a mothball!

FOREVER FRIENDS

On New Year’s Eve, Patty stood up in the local bar and said that it was time to get ready. At the stroke of midnight, she wanted everyone to be standing next to the one person who made their life worth living. As the clock struck 12, chaos erupted as the bartender was almost crushed to death.

CHRISTMAS WISH LIST

The older sister asks her younger brother, “What are you giving Mum and Dad for Christmas?” Without missing a beat, the little brother replies, “A list of everything I want.”

FAIR PLAY

This Christmas, I told my girlfriend that all I wanted was an Xbox, nothing more. That’s it. Beginning and end of list, one Xbox. You know what she got me? A homemade frame with a picture of us from our first date together. Which was fine... because I bought her an Xbox.

What to get your Dad for Christmas?

THE HEADACHE SUIT

TOO MUCH GLISTENING

THE TENTH REINDEER?

PIRATE EARRINGS

A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. As her dad donned his tuxedo she warned, “Daddy, you shouldn’t wear that suit.” “And why not, darling?” he asked. “You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning.”

Everyone’s heard of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer as the ninth reindeer, but many people don’t know that there is a tenth one whose name was Olive. “Olive the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names...”

The girlfriend stands by door, not sure what to say. “Honey, why is your whole upper half covered in baby oil?” “Well, you’re always saying I never glisten,” replies the boyfriend. “Listen! I said you never LISTEN!”

How much does it cost a Pirate to get his ears pierced? A bucc-an-eer!

LITTLE WHITE LIE

My friend reviewed her young son’s fill-in-theblank homework. One line: “At Christmas, we exchange gifts with ___________.” His response: “Receipts.”

I am five feet, three inches tall and pleasingly plump. After I had a minor accident, my mother accompanied me to A and E. The triage nurse asked for my height and weight, and I blurted out, “Five-foot-eight and nine stone.” While the nurse pondered this information, my mother leaned over to me. “Sweetheart,” she gently chided, “this is not the Internet.”

HINDSIGHT

CHRISTMAS PHONE LOG

GIFT EXCHANGE

Relationships are a lot like algebra. Have you ever looked at your ‘X’ and wondered ‘Y’?

DRESSING LIKE THIS

A teenage boy with spiked hair, nose ring, and baggy clothes was overheard telling a friend, “I don’t really like to dress like this.” “Then why do you?” asked the friend. “It keeps my parents from dragging me everywhere with them.”

How did the octopus defeat the shark? He was well armed!

A husband and wife had a big argument. Frustrated and fed up, the wife called up her Mum and said, “We fought again, and I can’t do this anymore. I am coming to live with you.” Mum said, “No darling, he must pay for his mistake. I am coming to live with you.”

Some insist on a shirt.

BED TIME QUESTION

If you refuse to go to sleep, does that mean you’re resisting a rest?

JAWS DUEL

EXPENSIVE MISTAKE

Boy to boy: 1 minute Boy to Dad: 30 seconds Boy to Mum: 2 minutes Boy to girl: 1 hour Girl to girl: 2 hours Girl to boy: 1 missed call Husband to wife: 15 seconds Wife to husband: 15 missed calls

PARACHUTE PROBLEMS

The topic of the day at Army Airborne School was what you should do if your parachute malfunctions. We had just gotten to the part about reserve parachutes when another student raised his hand. “If the main parachute malfunctions,” he asked, “how long do we have to deploy the reserve?” Looking the trooper square in the face, the instructor replied, “The rest of your life.”

Others insist on a pair of socks.

The argument always ends in a tie.
