John Brailsford Printers adds Laminator Pro 450 John Brailsford Printers has added a Morgana Laminator Pro 450 in order to speed up and automate its laminating capability. The product was purchased directly from Morgana Systems, the UK manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing. The Rotherham and Barnsley shop-fronted business has always had laminating in-house, but had generally been catering for smaller runs. Commenting on the arrival of the new machine, John Brailsford, company owner, said: “As the business has expanded the run lengths for laminating have increased. We also saw the need, with typical runs of 1,000/2,000 copies, for more automation. Our short run solutions required hand feeding, so taking a person out of the process actually made the new machine a very cost-effective solution from day one. “We looked at a range of machines, and sampled some of them with in-house trials. What became immediately apparent to us was that a number of products were not sufficiently robust to give us a reasonable life expectancy. The quality of the feeder was also an issue with some machines.” Although a user of a number of Morgana products, John hadn’t initially considered Morgana for laminating, “Even though we have purchased a number of products from the company, and still run Morgana numbering and creasing equipment, I wasn’t aware of them providing quality laminating solutions. Having

discussed the issue of laminating with our Morgana representative she was able to offer us an in-house trial of their latest Laminator 450 product. “We had the machine delivered and after a couple of days training we were producing perfect results. We ran the machine for six weeks before Morgana came back to ask the question. Safe to say, the machine didn’t come out again!” Designed for easy operation, the Laminator Pro 450 is a unique high-pile automatic feed laminator. It features an integrated compressor and pneumatic system for high quality print lamination up to 450mm working width. This revolutionary new compact machine combines speed and ease of operation with quality. This deep pile, automatic suction feed system can achieve speeds of up to 1,875 SRA3 sheets per hour. A micro-perforation and scissor roller

cutting system provides for perforation and separation of sheets. The Laminator Pro 450 is ideal for the ondemand printer. It is both easy to set up and very versatile, being capable of foiling and spot gloss as well as straightforward laminating. John Brailsford adds: “The foiling provided us with excellent results from day one — much better than other systems that we have tried in the past, as it is better suited to a wider range of stock, and is overall a more predictable process. “The foiling process is only suitable for working with digitally printed work, as the foil adheres to the toner. Whilst it is a £1,500 add on, being able to offer foiling to customers is most definitely an added-value capability.” The team at Brailsford’s also discovered that whilst the product is promoted as an SRA3 solution, they have been able to run SRA2 sheets through the machine and achieved very acceptable results. “It would only be efficient for very short runs, but that is all we would ever need,” added John. Ray Hillhouse, vice-president offline business at Morgana, said: “The Laminator 450 and 450 Pro offer a range of printers the ideal inhouse laminating solution. First shown on the Morgana stand at Ipex last year, we have been delighted with the interest that has been shown in the product.” Full details of Morgana’s product line-up can be found at: www.morgana.co.uk

Communications and Content at Lord Mayor’s Show At the suggestion of Alderman Peter Estlin the Rt Hon the Lord Mayor of London, the Lord Mayor’s Show this year featured an Engagement Zone which was set up near his official residence, Mansion House. This new initiative, which was inspired by last summer’s Apprentice 18 event at Ravensbourne University, featured a number of exhibitors including four, Paragon, Pearson, Parkside Flexibles and BPIF with the St Bride Foundation, under the aegis of the Stationers’ Company. Organised by Past Master Helen Esmonde, Chairman of the Stationers’ Education Committee, the exhibition anticipated Apprentice 19 which will take place at Guildhall in the City of London on 18th and 19th June 2019. A steady flow of visitors learned from Paragon about the wide range of printing’s impact in so many areas of commerce and viewed Pearson’s extensive range of educational materials. Parkside introduced visitors to compostable packaging and the St Bride Foundation with the BPIF took them from historic, traditional printing through to 3D printing. This was a great opportunity to spread the word about the importance of the Communications and Content industry and it was heartening to see people taking such a lively interest. At the end of his very busy day the Lord Mayor visited and spoke with all the exhibitors. He went on to say, “I was absolutely delighted to visit the inaugural Festival Zone hosted by Bloomberg during the Lord Mayor’s Show. In particular, the Worshipful Company of Stationers, led by Past Master Helen Esmonde,

displayed a fantastic array of innovative and sustainable packaging and printing products. David Allan, Master of the Stationers’ Company and I were given hands-on experience of the products and the companies working to address environmental issues using the latest technology.” www.stationers.org

Hülkenberg and Sainz Burger Challenge At Roland DG, one of the perks of the job is getting an exclusive look into the lives of Roland users. Sometimes they’re even lucky enough to play a more major part in their stories. Such was the case when Renault Sport Formula OneTM Team asked Roland to help them out with their favourite kind of challenge — a burger-related challenge! After a cold start to the United States Grand Prix week, The Renault Sport Formula OneTM Team needed something to help them gain ground at the upcoming race in Austin, Texas. Nothing says ‘gentlemen, start your engines’ quite like a tasty feast, and there was no better place to inject some foodie-fuel than in the birthplace of the loaded burger. On the Thursday before the race, Renault’s star drivers, Carlos Sainz and Nico Hülkenberg, met up for a burger crafting extravaganza. Each driver was tasked with making a custom burger for their teammate using specially selected ingredients to reflect their personalities. As they’re more accustomed to the car than the kitchen, this event was a step out of their comfort zone, but inspiration was clearly in the air. In tribute to Nico’s nickname, ‘The Hulk’,

Carlos served up a mighty feast stacked with plenty of meat and lettuce. Almost in act of retaliation, The Hulk hit back at Carlos ‘Chili’ Sainz, with a super-spicy burger featuring Spanish cheese, in honour of his teammate’s homeland. Such a feat of culinary wizardry couldn’t go undocumented, so the exchange of burgers was set to occur in front of photographers and TV media. With such attention, it seemed improper to present the burgers on regular, run-of-themill plates — which is when the guys at Renault Sport Formula OneTM Team thought of their good friends at Team Roland DG.

Roland Heroes assemble Roland DG has already discovered many Roland Heroes, with more to be revealed as the search for the most incredible Roland users continues. The Roland Hero Awards celebrate the people and ideas that make the vibrant, supportive and exciting Roland community what it is. The campaign shines a spotlight on the entrepreneurship, creativity and passion that in turn drive the innovations of Roland. Customers from across EMEA have been sharing their stories, and in return have been listed on the Roland Hero online roll of honour, with the overall winner to be rewarded with an unforgettable holiday. Recently, Roland announced that it has extended the deadline for entries to December 31st 2018, to allow Roland users more time to share their fascinating stories. “We’ve been so impressed and inspired by the Roland customers who have already got involved that we simply wanted to hear more,” says Gillian Montanaro, Head of Marketing EMEA at Roland DG. “We are excited to tell the world about them and their stories, and we look forward to crowning the overall winner of the Roland Hero Awards in January.” Customers already nominated Roland Heroes span multiple markets, including signage and display. The search has uncovered Eastprint, a

German advertising business that truly puts its trust in the Roland systems, running five Roland SOLJET printers to deliver everything they need, when they need it. Roland Heroes in the sports industry have also shared their stories. Lieuwe Boards is a Dutch kite surfboard specialist that uses Roland VersaSTUDIO BN-20 technology to print custom graphics strong enough to withstand serious waves. In the Canary Islands, In Your Face is proud to have developed a successful graphics business for the sailing market, relying on Roland’s popular and versatile integrated print and cut technology from the very beginning. Roland customers interested in participating should submit their hero stories before the closing date of 31st December 2018. www.rolandhero.com

Roland’s very own Application Engineer, Kai Perry, was in the driving seat, challenged with creating bespoke burger boxes befitting of the occasion. “I’ve made a lot of interesting things in my time,” says Kai, “but this was the first time I’ve been asked to make burger boxes. Luckily, we have plenty of devices in the Creative Centre that are perfect for making all kinds of packaging.” After experimenting with some different solutions and materials, the final boxes were created using the following process. First the designs were printed on matte vinyl with the Roland TrueVIS VG-640, including crop marks for cutting alignment. Kai then applied the vinyl to card and used the Roland CAMM-1 GR-640 to cut and crease the printed designs, before finishing and gluing the cartons by hand. “I’m really happy with how they turned out,” says Kai. “The designs we used were based on the colours of the drivers’ helmets, which I thought was a really clever touch.” We’re sure Nico and Carlos were impressed with the burger boxes too, although something tells us they were more focused on the contents… www.renaultsport.com/Formule-1-330

Rotherham based printer 2020 expansion

Rapidly expanding South Yorkshire based print manufacturer, Bluetree Group confirms further expansion in Manvers, Rotherham. After four years of calling Manvers home, Bluetree Group has confirmed their plans to expand their manufacturing facility into a neighbouring unit, increasing their total footprint by 45% to 145,000sqft and paving the way for Bluetree’s continuing growth. Adam Carnell, Managing Director said; “We’re in an exciting position with the business continuing to grow very rapidly year on year as more consumers choose to purchase their printed products online. When we first moved into the building in 2015 it seemed vast but with the investment in new equipment the space has been filling up quickly. The additional

production space will allow the business to fulfil its growing demand and also add new products to the current line-up” Over the past five years, Bluetree Group has invested £20 million into their South Yorkshire print production facility, ensuring their place at the forefront of print industry innovation whilst stimulating the local economy with the expansion of their skill rich workforce. The latest addition to the facility includes the groundbreaking Landa S10P Nanographic Printing® Press which combines the speed of a digital printer with the cost-efficiency of a litho printer. This will be the first Landa in the UK and reflects Bluetree’s dedication of delivering quality print to its customers at fast turnarounds. With Bluetree’s confirmed expansion, it’s

anticipated that recruitment will begin at the end of 2019 to fulfil various production roles within the new facility. Vicki Russell Head of HR said; “We’re very lucky to have secured a neighbouring facility. It means we can continue to thrive in Rotherham with our dedicated, passionate work force that has expanded by over 200 colleagues over the past five years alone. With our expansion; we’re very excited to invest in our existing workforce and look forward to welcoming even more members to the Bluetree team”. Renovation on the newly purchased facility will begin during spring 2019 and run through to early 2020; when Bluetree anticipates everything to be up and running. www.bluetreegroup.co.uk

Jubilee book to mark print’s 25-year journey Over the last year, in a series of articles on the ‘PastPrintFuture’-blog, industry experts Laurel Brunner and Ed Boogaard have been chronicling the 25-year history of digital printing. To commemorate this milestone, there will also be a book of the same title — to be launched during Xeikon’s 30th anniversary celebration. It has been 25 years since the Xeikon DCP-1 and the Indigo E-Print 1000 were introduced at IPEX 1993. The digital printing industry has come a long way since, and 2018 is an excellent moment to explore digital printing’s evolution. The ‘PastPrintFuture’ project set out from the beginning to not just talk technology, say Brunner and Boogaard: “We wanted to focus also on the people that made it happen, on the changes that digital printing has enabled in business models and in applications, and on how this helps to define the future of the industry.”

Brunner and Boogaard managed to engage with a broad range of people that have been closely involved with print’s digital journey in various ways. “We have talked to great entrepreneurs who often have been pioneers in digital print and are still pushing the boundaries. And industry pundits such as Frank Romano, Andy Tribute and Kurt Wolf have helped us to put things in a broader perspective.” Danny Mertens, Corporate Communications Manager for Xeikon, adds: “We hope both the blog and now the book will be beneficial to those who are relatively new to the industry, and a walk down memory lane for veterans who have been around for a while.” “Writing down these stories and reading through historical publications, we have once again been impressed by what has been achieved in only 25 years — but even more so by what the future may still bring to this

industry. Our book is to mark this important moment in time and celebrate print,” say Brunner and Boogaard. And the project isn’t over: “As print’s digital journey continues, we invite all people from the industry to join us: please visit the ongoing PastPrintFutureblog and keep contributing your experiences, stories and pictures.” www.xeikon.com

Mimaki help students’ creative potential The University of Huddersfield’s busy and bustling print room is a unique, creative space that provides students with a collaborative environment within which to explore the potential that inkjet printing offers their design process. The mastermind of Technical Manager Coordinator at the university’s School of Art, Design and Architecture, Stephen Calcutt, the print room houses a Mimaki UJF small format flatbed LED UV printer, a state of the art Mimaki Tx300P-1800 direct to textile printer alongside further small format transfer printers, large format graphics devices, plus binding and other finishing processes. “Our initial investment in the Mimaki UJF and its subsequent location in our school-wide print facility totally changed our approach to teaching and supporting print design,” recalls Calcutt. “We originally operated the facility like a traditional university print bureau, with about five large format printers churning out posters and graphics. The arrival of the UJF changed our focus and transformed the way we work.” Now, with the facility offered to students from other courses alongside the textile users, it’s a thriving, interactive hub where students are taught to question conventional thinking and utilise the creative capabilities of the Mimaki printers to the best of their ability. Key to this behavioural change is PhD student and senior lecturer, Brent Hardy-Smith. “I’m not here to sit and critique students’ work,” he says. “Instead, I run workshops, learning alongside the students. Our methodology is all about discovery and transformative design, using the printers as creative tools and collaborating with other technology and materials.” “Teaching becomes more about facilitating,” he continues. “Whether that’s facilitating people, equipment or thinking, it’s all relevant to the process and helps lead the students in different directions.” “I encourage them to ask, ‘can we?’ and to question convention,” he states. “The design software says what’s possible but it’s the Mimaki printers that add the potential, and this is transforming the way the students think about the connection between design and print.” Huddersfield University is centrally located in the town, itself surrounded by the Pennines and steeped in a rich textile printing heritage. With major investment and development on the cards, the university’s School of Art, Design and Architecture is set to move to a high-tech new building in 2019, but for now, offers a creative resource that spans a multitude of disciplines including architecture, animation, photography, graphic design and textiles. Mimaki’s UJF series of multi award-winning

small format flatbed printers is utilised in a broad array of industries, from high-end décor applications to the promotional product printing market. They’re also found within manufacturing environments as well as many other sectors that benefit from its arsenal of creative tools; such as opaque white ink, clear varnish, vibrant process colours and the ability to print to almost any substrate. Purchased through Mimaki reseller R A Smart, the Tx300P-1800 is a versatile, wide format, direct to textile printer that allows students to output to digitally prepared natural fabrics such as cotton, making it a popular choice for fashion and furnishings businesses as well as designers. “We have an excellent relationship with the team at R A Smart and Laura Newill (our Textiles Specialist Design and Print Technician) and I are always kept well informed on new product developments,” Calcutt affirms. “What pleases me the most however, is the great service we receive from both R A Smart and Hybrid. As a manager, it’s essential that I am confident that our staff will be well supported

in the implementation and development of newly acquired technologies and I know that Laura can rely on the technical expertise of the engineers and solutions experts.” “The range of Mimaki hardware that we have teaches the students the appropriateness of print,” continues Hardy-Smith. “They quickly learn what to use and why. From their initial amazement at the potential, by understanding what the printers offer, they can be ever more creative in their design process.” An annual highlight is the end of year show and the Mimaki printers have played an important role in the work on display. “Students learn to collaborate, so are able to incorporate many different techniques in their exhibitions,” concludes Calcutt. “We encourage them to work with multiple technologies and materials, so the breadth of work is proof of how they’re flourishing as young designers and learning how to operate outside the established framework. None of this would have happened had we not made the initial investment in the Mimaki.” www.rasmart.co.uk

New eye-catching floor graphics Many of us use our phones while out shopping: researching products, comparing prices, downloading coupons, taking photos of items to think about later, looking at a shopping list or simply checking the time. So, with so many shoppers looking down at their phones, retailers need to find new ways to grab their attention. Innovations in printing technology, inks and — of course — materials now enable display and advertising potential to reach floor to ceiling and wall to wall. Window displays encourage shoppers into a retail space, inside which POS and shelf-edge displays can boost sales of a specific product or range. But floor graphics can do all this and more: they can be used to guide customers into and around a space and create a fuller experience. This method can also be incredibly effective in city centre environments, trade shows, museum exhibitions, theme parks — anywhere you want to grab and maintain the attention of your visitor. They’re also ideal for places like hospitals, transport hubs and educational facilities, where effective wayfinding systems keeps foot traffic moving in the right direction. The safety of floor graphics was, naturally, a concern in the past; installing a tripping hazard is never good business. But materials have been developed to ensure floor graphics are non-slip and securely fixed and, Drytac make media that is easy to install and to remove too, even for the non-professional. They have a full range of display materials designed specifically for safe,

user-friendly and effective graphics on a whole variety of common floor coverings. This includes award winning SpotOn Floor 200, a 200 micron (8 mil) embossed printable white matte PVC film designed for short-term, indoor floor graphics with no need for lamination, with a post-print anti-slip rating. It has also achieved a Class B1 Fire Rating, meaning it can be used in public areas governed by strict fire regulations, and has Drytac’s innovative ‘dot pattern’ adhesive for clean removal — leaving no sticky residue. Drytac’s FloorTac range is tough enough to withstand medium to heavy foot traffic in indoor environments, offering a great addition to short-term graphics campaigns. This speciality floor graphics media features a removable, pressure-sensitive grey acrylic adhesive making it easy to apply, maintain and remove. Recommended to be paired with Drytac’s Emerytex overlaminate to provide slip-rated floor graphics. FloorTac is available in North America and FloorTac Plus is available in Europe All Drytac’s materials that are suitable for floor graphics are compatible with UV, solvent, eco-solvent and latex ink technologies, making them incredibly versatile products. With floor graphics it’s all about being eyecatching, so spend time experimenting with colours and designs to create something far more enticing than a smartphone. Take a look around the Drytac range to discover the perfect floor display media for your campaign. www.drytac.com

Xeikon X-800 6.0 Digital Press Platforms Xeikon has announced the newest version of its X-800 digital front-end (DFE). It delivers maximum automation to enable the most powerful workflow on the market. The X-800 6.0 combines superior and consistent print with industry-leading productivity to enable digital printers to process their print jobs, no matter how complex, in the fastest, most flexible and secure way. It is upgradable to all press-models from the Panther UV inkjet presses – the PX3000 and PX2000 to the Xeikon 3000 series to the Cheetah series for labels and the Xeikon 8000 and 9000 series for the graphic arts markets. The solution enables print service providers to reduce job preparation time, automate converting and serve a new business which can only be enabled through digital print, such as variable data. “We are constantly innovating our press portfolio and, as a result, our software solutions that support them, so our customers can maximise their production possibilities,” comments Filip Weymans, Vice President Marketing at Xeikon. “The Xeikon X-800 6.0 DFE builds on our highly successful and established dedicated Xeikon press software platform that works with open standards and delivers scalable functionality.” Weymans continues: “It will allow all our customers to add value no matter their speciality area. From label and packaging

converters to operations with high-volume data throughput requirements, the latest version will help them streamline their workflow, reduce job preparation time for even the most complex work and become more responsive and efficient. To demonstrate the possible business gains for individual operations Xeikon has launched a new initiative called “Workflow Challenge”. Customers can request an online review by simply mailing info@xeikon.com comparing the X-800 6.0 to other workflows. Adds Weymans: “Simply seeing the impact

a software solution has on other similar operations does not always make it easy to understand how it will help your business’s performance. With our Workflow Challenge, a much more direct comparison can be made helping define specific goals that will achieve tangible results. We will highlight how job automation reduces job preparation, enables variable data management and supports web to print with laser die cutting.” For more information about Xeikon, visit www.xeikon.com

PEOPLE IN PRINT Esko appoints Mattias Byström as President

The City of Salisbury welcomes Signs Express

Esko has announced that Mattias Byström has been appointed President, effective January 1, 2019. Byström succeeds Udo Panenka, who is leaving the company to pursue new opportunities. “We thank Udo for his excellent service to Danaher over the past ten years, including leading Esko since 2015,” reflected Joakim Weidemanis, Executive Vice President of Danaher, Esko’s parent company. “Under Udo’s leadership, Esko repositioned the flexo plate production business through innovation and moved to a new site in Itzehoe. Udo also built up Esko’s business serving brand owners, including the acquisitions of MediaBeacon and BLUE, and initiated Esko’s software migration to software as a service (SaaS).” Mattias Byström brings with him over twenty years of general management experience. Most recently he was CEO of FlexLink, a global $300 million factory automation solutions business with headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden. Byström has eight years of prior Danaher experience in different leadership roles in what was then known as Danaher Motion. This included leading the Automated Guided Vehicle business, primarily a software systems enterprise. Earlier in his career, Byström co-founded and led two digital start-ups. Commenting on his new appointment, Mattias Byström says, “Esko has incredible potential because digitisation, automation and connectivity have gained momentum in the packaging industry in the past few years. It is my priority to ensure that Esko delivers stronger innovation that is increasingly valuable to our customers.” www.esko.com

Established in 1989 and celebrating their 30th anniversary next year, Signs Express has developed into the largest network of sign production centres in the UK and is growing at its fastest rate in more than 10 years. The addition of a centre opening in Salisbury is the fourth new centre the franchise has opened this year making a total of 67 centres across the UK. The Wiltshire city, described as “quintessentially English’’ is famous for its world heritage, history and beautiful surroundings. The addition of the national signage company to this area will offer innovative products and services to local companies in Salisbury and surrounding areas such as Andover, Romsey, The New Forest as well as Amesbury. The owner of Signs Express (Salisbury), Rod Clark, has a great combination of skills brought over from his time in project management and business operations. With a natural flare for the arts learnt through his time as a photographer, Rod’s range of expertise has helped him get off to a flying start having recently completed work for an array of local businesses. Rod said “Nothing is more important to me than having a good relationship with the customers I work with in my local area. I am excited to be a part of the award-winning Signs Express Franchise and I cannot wait to use all of my experiences to focus on running my own business, which has always been my goal”. Managing Director of Signs Express, Jonathan Bean commented, “Rod is a natural people person with a vast professional background. MAKING BIG PLANS FOR THE FUTURE When the penultimate week of the month comes around I have a dilemma. I like to start this column with a little preamble but when the copy deadline looms for this magazine I often initially struggle to think of a theme, or at least a topic to be part of the prologue. But then along comes a customer and provides me with a perfect script that enables me to come up with a suitable punchline. Martin Christie scribes…

[A]

s many readers will know, as well as a publisher, we are also a busy working print on demand shop serving a diverse range of people in Brighton, and our walk in city centre counter sees by a colourful collection of visitors at times. But it is this rich and varied resource that is a great reality check if you are in danger of getting too carried away with the technology, or thinking you’ve got an answer for everything. Every day brings a new experience. So we had one of those customers, the one with all the questions about how much and how many and how about if… They seem to be stuck on an endless loop of enquiry that’s never going to get anywhere. He’s probably the same in the pound shop — it doesn’t matter however many you have, they’re still a pound! Fortunately, I’m only earwigging this conversation from behind a monitor screen and not having to deal with it, but you can’t help listening because you have a horrible feeling this could go on all afternoon. Finally he focuses on mug. It’s just £9.99, and he’s already had £10 worth of staff time, but it’s not done yet. The mug comes out, he’s shown how the image will look, advised on size and what type of file, all the helpful advice and guidance you get from a proper shop. So just when we think he’s going to put his valued order in he announces it was only a general enquiry as he normally buys everything on line as it’s cheaper and more convenient! Yes I know it’s a familiar story on the high street but bear with me, there’s a neat twist. A little later the franked mail has to go up to be posted at the main sorting office, and it’s my turn as it’s one of those horrible wet and windy wintery days and I have the biggest coat. The good thing with the main sorting office is there’s a hatch for the mail bag so you don’t have to queue at the counter. That’s just as well because the queue is out of the door and up the road, and it’s can only made up of people expecting to pick up parcel deliveries as there are no other

London’s tube network in black and white versus colour

counter services here. There’s only one member of staff serving at the window, so this single file of expectants is shuffling slowly at a snail’s pace, and most of them are in the rain, looking miserable. Oh, and who’s that at the back? You’re probably ahead of me by now, but of course it’s our prospective mug purchaser experiencing the full reality of an on line transaction. If he’s not waiting to receive his order, he’ll be trying to send it back because it’s not the right colour. Is it really worth saving a couple of quid for this when you can get exactly what you want, when you want it first time. Of course, we can’t block internet sales, and we take advantage of it ourselves, if only because there are so many things you can no longer buy from the remaining shops in the city centre. The point of a print service at a counter with expert advice is that, unlike a pair of shoes or a dress, there are so many more questions that can be discussed and taken into account other than the

size of your foot or your vital statistics. So many customers come to the counter not being sure what they want, or what they can expect to pay, it’s a lot more complicated than ticking a box on a website. When they search on line, a browser only finds what he thinks he is looking for. Then there is the add on sale, what we now have to call upselling, which will be especially relevant with Christmas looming and shoppers needing to fill those stockings with extra gifts. By the time you read this the seasonal deadline will be closing fast, as will the options for guaranteed delivery. Time to make that point to people on the street. The hands-on experience of recent months was also useful when I attended the launch of Epson’s latest printers, these intended for the plan and plotter market but with potential to fill several roles in the print shop. I do like Epson’s approach to these sort of things, rather than try and browbeat you with

statistics, or tedious mission statements and Powerpoint presentations, they tend to keep it all very casual and simple. Here are the products, see what you think. A simple plan printer may not have the prestige of some of the more expensive and sophisticated models in the range, but the latest offering is worth a second look, if only because the market itself is evolving. The humble plotter has had a place in the print shop for years, and traditionally serviced the basic builder trade needing a line drawing of a house or a yard. The toner-based units were big and bulky, and still are. When smaller, faster inkjet machines became available, architects and designers started to install them in their own office rather than use a print bureau. HP and Canon were probably the brands of choice, often because they were already providing other equipment in their range. Although some of these machines were colour capable, there didn’t seem to be much of a demand for plan printing in full colour, and better quality colour demanded a better calibre of printer. But times have changed, as they do, and probably there are several factors involved. It came to my attention earlier this year when a big job came in that needed A1 colour, and in quantity. As the large format operator, I would normally use our eight colour pigment printer, and just use 140gsm paper and adjust the price to about a third of standard because of the small amount of ink used, and light coverage on the paper. This is fine for a few prints on a deadline, but quantity calls for a complete rethink. I found the fastest speed I could dial into the printer, and still produce fine detail black in text as well as solid colour lines without banding produced an A1 in just under four minutes. That’s still only just over a dozen an hour if you allow for cutting time, and changing paper and ink, so if you have hundreds to do it’s a job of several days, not hours. The big job was for a major redevelopment of Brighton’s central traffic zone, with extended pedestrianisation, that will be ongoing over the next two years, and the plans involved existing detail of lighting, mains electricty, sewerage, ducting, in fact all the many pieces of infrastructure that make up a modern city. When you see all of that complex patchwork laid out at A1 size you quickly see why you need to give a workman a hardcopy and not let him try and view it on his phone. And with that much detail you can also see

vivid-online.com

what it has to be in colour. It makes it so much easier to spot things that might be missed in greyscale. It even makes it easier to collate a large collection of maps because you can quickly see colour differences between them. Otherwise you’d have to look very hard or try and read the tiny label in the bottom right corner. Once you tackle a job like that it becomes very obvious that colour is a sensible option, and in the scale of costs of major development more affordable than a serious site error. As all the many wires and cables that hold our complicated information society together expand, the need for the colour-coded solution will only increase. And despite digital devices, there is no substitute for something that can be spread out and viewed in reasonable scale. Apart from the printing of plans and visual concepts on a larger scale than A3, there is a very real need for a cheaper option for general posters and documents that don’t need fine art or photographic specifications. For that, a basic four colour printer is now able to come up with acceptable quality as well as speed. The changing market means that the average modern day customer, unused to printing requirements, can’t easily grasp why a basic A2 is not twice but four times the price of an A3, and why it can’t be done just as instantly. So Epson’s new model range is perfectly timed to meet these needs. Not the manufacturer’s first plan printers, but a new generation faster, more efficient, and priced competitively with existing competition. The entry-level model comes in at under a thousand pounds, will print short edge

12 incredible print effects using the

19

A1, and will fit comfortably on a large desktop or table and is therefore easily moved around. The 24-inch model has a 36-inch stablemate which will do A0. I never did understand why it took the LFP manufacturers so long to work out that an A0 printer only needs to have a carriage 36-inches wide and not 44. Always a lot of waste paper left. As well as the paper rolls, which can run up to 260gsm, both models will easily cope with manual sheet feed down to A4, which can be useful in the office for the odd letter or envelope. Like other Epsons, they will also take quite thick card and any normal media, and possibly some not so normal. As Epson use gravity to help move the media down to the inkjet, the electric motor drive is not overstretched trying to push it up. The T3100 and T5100 share the same Epson Micro TFP head technology on all its latest models, meaning cleaner running, less wastage of ink in blockages, and more accurate performance on longer runs. The trick with inkjets has always been to make the heads run faster without blocking the minute jets with excess ink. Unlike HP and Canon, Epson don’t use an electrical charge to ease ink flow in the heads and as a result tend to be more reliable in the long run. We hope to get one of the models on trial early in the new year so will be able to give you a full road test, particularly on costings of the various print options. It’s all well and good checking specifications that look good on paper, if you are going to commit to a working tool you want to know how it shapes up in the real world. Have a good Christmas, see you in the New Year!

Printwear & Promotion LIVE!

30TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT PREVIEW Garment decoration is a quick and easy way for businesses in the copy and print industry to expand their offering and boost profits. For companies looking to branch out into this vibrant sector, Printwear & Promotion LIVE!’s 30th anniversary event will be unmissable.

[T]

aking place in Halls 17 & 18 at the NEC Birmingham from Sunday, January 20 to Tuesday, January 22, the show is not only the annual hub for printwear professionals but a unique opportunity for high street digital printers to explore the vast range of add-on options available for their business. Printwear & Promotion LIVE! will celebrate 30 years of providing inspiration in garment decoration in 2019 and will mark the occasion with the biggest show in its history — with 150 suppliers set to take to the exhibition floor to showcase the latest in equipment, technology and garments. This, in addition to exclusive show deals and discounts, means visitors looking to enter the market can find everything they need to kick-start their new venture on a budget and take home priceless advice, tips and tricks from experts in a number of exciting and informative feature areas. Tony Gardner, event director, says: “We are all looking forward to enjoying an event worthy of a 30th anniversary with thousands of industry professionals and I’m certain that all of our visitors — whether they be veterans of garment decoration or new to the sector — will find the tools and inspiration they need to help their business thrive.”

Boost your business in 2019

Visitors looking to dip their toes into garment decoration for the first time will be spoilt for choice — with a number of exhibitors showcasing a variety of quick and cost-effective starting points. Transfer printing, for example, is a great place to start. All you need to get going is a printer, a heat press and other basic supplies of which there will be plenty at the show. On stand C30, Target Transfers will be showing a range of new heat transfer vinyl products including the Stahls’ Hotronix Dual Air Fusion IQ Heat Press, Hotronix Power Platen and the Stahls’ EZ Weeding Table — which promises to improve HTV weeding by 80%. Visitors are invited to try it for themselves, so

make sure you bring along your own pre-cut design and put it to the test! Doro Tape UK will be on stand A52 illustrating just how quick and easy it can be to expand your business and produce graphics and logos, with live demonstrations of the whole process from printing using the Roland VersaSTUDIO BN-20 through to application using the Stahls’ Hotronix Heat Press. The company will also be presenting the new Image Flex Turbo 4036, a digital print, heat pressable PU film that can produce full colour, high resolution graphics for almost any textile, in addition to their full selection of garment decoration films. If you want to be able to produce garments that stand out from the crowd then you’ll want to source a variety of films that allow you to do so. A great place to start is stand P10, where Dae Ha UK will be showcasing over 200 variations of film from its 41 colour range of Hot Peel PU MAX, the Silicone Flex range, Stretch Metallics and the world’s first Stretch Glitter. Plus, you can find out more about Dae Ha UK’s preferred heat presses which are available from the company’s partner, Lotus Heat Transfer Presses, which offers 70 heat press variations from small to XXL format. An alternative route for a garment decoration add-on is dye sublimation, allowing you to print full colour artwork on a variety of products from apparel and banners to a variety of novelty items such as phone covers, coffee mugs and more. If this appeals to you, visit stand G22 to find out more about the innovative Ghost Sublime Toner. Simply replace your CMYK toner cartridges with a set of Sublime CMYK Toners, print your design on regular copy paper and then transfer it directly on to your chosen polyester and polymer-coated textiles!

Delving further into decoration

If you have already invested in a garment decoration add-on for your business and are ready to take the next step by upgrading your existing set up, then Printwear & Promotion LIVE! has plenty for you too. Direct to garment printing is a great way to increase your offering and with a number of game changing DTG printers set for launch at the show, it’s the place to source what’s right for you and your business.

The Ricoh Ri 1000 will be available from Resolute DTG on stand B20 at the show. Pinned as the company’s middle market option, the Ri 1000 boasts many of the same features included on the higher end Ri 6000 with a

price tag that is far less than its production capabilities — making it the perfect option for new and growing DTG companies. Alternative DTG options can be found on stand H10 from Your Embroidery Services Ltd,

25

where the innovatively designed DTG-QM8 will be on show. The high-speed industrial production ready textile printer from DTG Digital offers cost-effective ink management, requires less maintenance and has the lowest ink, consumable and service cost on the market. The YES stand will also be of interest if you want to take the embroidery route, with the unveiling of the new and advanced KS Super Compact 8 head machine from SWF set to take place at the show. This embroidery machine has been earmarked as a brilliant option for those entering the garment decoration industry or for small businesses looking to expand their offering. Those that are looking to take their garment decoration add-on to the next level might be interested in seeing the new Diamondback E from M&R, available on stand B70 from Screen Print World. In addition to increased overall

SIGN & DIGITAL EXPLAINS Sign & Digital explains is where you will find useful videos and articles on a range of industry topics. Whether you are a novice or a pro, Sign & Digital explains will provide you with insight, advice and some helpful tips and tricks! are dry as soon as they come off the machine and can be laminated immediately without the need for outgassing. Another bonus of latex ink is that it sits ‘on’ the surface of the material and, unlike solvent or eco solvent inks, does not embed itself into the material. Theoretically speaking this means there will be more materials available for you to use, but the amount of heat required for curing may upset the dimensional stability of some of them.

Ink before you think Buying a new wide format printer

Colin Gillman advises when thinking about investing in your first wide format printer you should have a clear idea about the type of work you want it to produce, and this will be determined by the type of inkjet ink that your printer of choice uses. Once you have identified what sort of applications you are looking to produce, the printer will pretty much choose itself. So, let’s take a look at the four main ink types used for the production of general display graphics which are: solvent; eco solvent; latex; and UV LED.

Solvent inks

Historically speaking, solvent or full solvent as it is more commonly referred, is the most popular wide format ink type because the inks are extremely hard wearing and provide a strong vibrant colour output that can be used on a wide range of uncoated medias for a multitude of applications. Solvent ink is highly suited to vehicle graphics and outdoor applications such as on banners or heavy weight vinyls because it is so hard wearing. This is because these inks contain strong chemicals that aggressively penetrate the surface of the media. They are rated for up to five years outdoors without lamination before fading occurs, and this outdoor shelf-life can be extended by over-laminating the printed materials. When working with solvent inks it is strongly advisable to operate the printer in a wellventilated area in conjunction with an efficient fume extraction system.

Eco solvent inks

Next up is eco solvent ink. It might seem strange to couple the words eco with solvent, but while still being a mild form of solvent ink, an eco solvent ink doesn’t contain anywhere near the VOC levels found in full solvent inks. As such the inks have little or no odour and are fully-

UV inks

biodegradable. However, just because an ink has no odour it does not automatically mean that it can be used in a normal indoor environment without proper extraction systems in place. You should always check with the manufacturer or the manufacturers product description sheets regarding ventilation requirements when using any kind of eco solvent ink. Colours are just as rich and vibrant as found with full solvent inks, and there is a greater variety of additional colours available than with full solvent systems such as light cyan, light magenta, grey, orange, and white. For example, Roland recently launched an 8-colour eco solvent printer that features CMYK plus light black, red, green and orange that can accurately match up to 99% of Pantone+ Solid Coated colours. Therefore, eco-solvent printers are fast becoming the printer of choice for those producing branded signage, POS displays, vehicle wraps, and exhibition graphics to name just a few applications.

Latex inks

The alternative to solvent based ink is waterbased latex. This ink type uses a polymer with a water-based carrier to get the ink onto the surface of the material. Once the ink has been put down a significant amount of heat is then applied to evaporate the water carrier and bind the pigments to the surface of the material. The advantage of using latex inks is that prints

The range of printers that run ultra violet (UV) ink is vast, from small desktop flatbeds for promotional items, wide format roll-fed printers for POS/POP usage, grand format flatbeds for rigid direct to media printing, and hybrid machines that can handle both rigid and roll fed media. There are many advantages to printing with UV, particularly with modern LED printers. The inks are cured via UV as soon as they are laid down and as such are dried immediately. The colour gamut too is comparable with that of solvent inks, and outgassing is not a requirement. UV inks also dry ‘hard’ and as such lamination is not required on most outputs making UV an ideal choice for outdoor applications. Another benefit of UV ink is the VOC levels are so low that ventilating the printer is not a requirement, but it should be noted that UV inks are generally more expensive than with other systems.

Colour chart – blue. Colour chart – orange

So, these are the four main ink types commonly found in the wide format display graphics sector, and at this stage it should be pointed out that when buying a brand new printer it would be advisable to use the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) recommended ink. While there are indeed plenty of third-party ink suppliers in the market, OEM inks are designed to bring out the best results from the manufacturers print heads. Other factors such as viscosity of the inks, the batch-to-batch consistency of the dyes, and other raw materials within the ink are engineered to work optimally with OEM print heads. Two Sides Reports Global AntiGreenwash Success Since its inception, Two Sides’ anti-greenwash campaign has investigated 921 organisations worldwide. Of these, over two-thirds were found to be using unsubstantiated claims regarding paper’s impact on the environment, usually in breach of local advertising regulations. After being challenged by Two Sides, 335 organisations removed or changed their messaging. In a joint statement, Two Sides’ Country Managers stated: “We are thrilled to be able to report the latest global anti-greenwash results. The Anti-Greenwash campaign is such an important initiative because without Two Sides’ intervention there would be no other body holding these organisations to account. But despite the success of the campaign, as well as clear rules on unsubstantiated environmental claims, greenwash tactics are still commonplace. Everyday, new claims are brought to the attention of Two Sides, ranging from seemingly-harmless ‘think before you print’ email signatures, to the world’s biggest banks telling tens of millions of their customers that paper is bad for the environment.” Common consumer misconceptions about print and paper are being reinforced by service providers as they increasingly encourage their customers to switch to electronic bills, statements and correspondence. Often the incentive to switch is based on unfounded environmental claims such as ‘Go Green — Go Paperless’ and ‘Choose e-billing and help save a tree.’ Not only are these claims misleading, but the drive to digital is not always welcomed by consumers. In a survey commissioned Two Sides, over 10,000 consumers around the globe were asked about their preferences for print. Key findings include: • 89% believe they have the right to choose how they receive communications (printed or electronically) from financial organisations and service providers • 77% believe they should not be charged more for choosing a paper bill or statement • 73% keep hard copies of important documents filed at home, as they believe this is the safest and most secure way of storing information • 69% agree going ‘paperless’ is not really ‘paperless’ because they regularly have to print out documents at home • 62% agree incentives to switch to digital because it is ‘better for the environment’ are actually because the sender wants to save money Two Sides’ Country Managers remark: “Two Sides, of course, recognises there is a place for digital communication in today’s ever-online world, but we must not force change as a blanket policy on all consumers, particularly under the guise of misleading and unsubstantiated environmental claims. Two Sides asks all services providers to take a fair and honest approach to their communications and ensure that consumers remain free to choose paper, without charge or difficulty.” If you see instances of Greenwash messages, please send the details to greenwash@twosides.info www.twosides.info

KYOCERA celebrates 27 years of sustainability at the core of operations

With KYOCERA Corporation celebrating the 27th anniversary of its Environmental Charter, KYOCERA Document Solutions UK, a leading document solutions company, continues to use the Charter as a beacon of inspiration and an essential part of everyday life within the company. Based on the concept of “Coexistence”, the landmark policy leads the way in the organisation’s efforts to “do the right thing as a human being”. The Environmental Charter was created in October 1991 and has been a fundamental pillar in the company. Despite growth across the globe, sustainability and environmental protection is at the heart of KYOCERA’s existence. It adheres to the Company Philosophy, as created by founder Dr. Kazuo Inamori, which outlines the desire that KYOCERA “contributes to the advancement of society and humankind”. The success of this approach is proved by KYOCERA Document Solutions UK’s recent attainment of the ISO 14001:2015 certification which demonstrates an environmental approach in all of the organisation’s operations. In particular, the organisation’s ECOSYS range is a reputable multi-award-winning leader in the industry with KYOCERA Document Solutions continually innovating its product range to drive further sustainability, even after 25 years of becoming a pioneering product within the market as the first to focus on sustainability. Promoting environmental responsibility among customers is also an aim of its ongoing initiatives, as KYOCERA strongly believes that a sustainable approach does not end at the moment of consumption. To this end, the company’s Toner Take Back service recycles over 600,000 kilograms of used toners each year, building upon the company’s investment in producing simplified toner cartridges which require fewer components and consume less energy in production. “At KYOCERA, ensuring that all of our activities are sustainable and environmentally friendly is a real commitment, as well as an essential business practice,” explains Takuya Marubayashi, President of KYOCERA Document Solutions Europe. “Sustainability is not just a mere buzz word for KYOCERA, it is a way of living. All of our employees embrace that approach and, from our experience, so do our partners, dealers and customers. It is part of what sets us apart as an organisation and as a family”. www.kyoceradocumentsolutions.co.uk

Print and IT predictions

From Jason Cort Director of Product Planning and Marketing at Sharp: 1. CREATING NEW VALUE THROUGH TARGETED INNOVATION In 2019, OEMs will build upon and refine the intelligent, connected technologies that have started to permeate the print and IT industries. AI and IoT have become popular buzzwords of late, but as these technologies become more commonplace, organisations need to differentiate themselves by offering products that add real value for customers. To do this vendors and channel organisations will need to think more about the end user experience. This is certainly something we are focused on at Sharp, looking beyond the technology to consider how new features and functionality are designed to have the most impact on the overall customer experience. This helps to create more targeted innovation that delivers the experiences customers need, want

and value. A great example of this is the Windows Collaboration Display that Sharp, Foxconn and Microsoft previewed at June’s Comdex in Las Vegas. Other intelligent display products do exist, but the addition of embedded IoT sensors that integrate with the physical environment truly differentiates the product and adds new value for the customer. 2. FURTHER MARKET CONSOLIDATION The print industry is getting smaller; while this doesn’t mean that people will stop printing overnight, there is now more urgency for print focused organisations to diversify. Next year we will see an increase in the number of businesses looking to move beyond their traditional target markets. This could be achieved through partnerships with companies offering complementary software and service solutions. However, it is likely we will see further consolidation of the market as a result — another print OEM may change hands for example. 3. ACCELERATED DIVERSIFICATION It is becoming more challenging to be truly innovative in print. For some time Sharp has been encouraging its channel partners to put the MFP at the heart of a range of integrated solutions that support collaborative working. Collaboration will continue to be a key trend for businesses in 2019, so there will be an acceleration in the uptake of products such as interactive whiteboards, digital signage and video conferencing throughout the print channel. However, it is also important to remember that the print industry is built around a specific business model, one that relies on a hardware

Jason Cort, Sharp’s Director of Product Planning Marketing

installed base, multi-year business contracts and consumables. Because of this, we will see more manufacturers exploring new areas of innovation that work for the way the print channel is structured. Sharp is currently doing this with Skywell, a smart atmospheric water generator that will be sold exclusively through Sharp and its partners in the UK on an as a service basis. 4. A MORE IT CENTRIC APPROACH Underpinning these developments will be a shift toward a more IT-centric mind set and approach. Customers increasingly want to buy products from IT capable vendors; this is a trend that businesses will have to respond to in 2019 in order to stay competitive.

Quick Print Pro • 2020 Print Vision

December 2018-January 2019

At Sharp we are doing this through the continued expansion of our IT managed services and have also been looking outside of existing business streams for new opportunities, for example Sharp has just completed its acquisition of Toshiba’s personalcomputer business. This new mind set will drive more OEMs to move from the Office Equipment channel to the IT channel, in order to provide the products and services that businesses expect in today’s digital era www.sharp.co.uk

New Xerox ConnectKey apps

Organisations can now better connect staff to popular business platforms such as Salesforce, QuickBooks Online and Concur, supporting customer relationship management, accounting and invoicing, plus streamline additional processes with new apps for Xerox ConnectKey® devices. Purchasing and implementing the apps is simple with a new e-commerce-enabled site. The Morrell Group, a full-service automation controls design and engineering services organisation, has experienced the power of ConnectKey apps. The company saved 25 percent by automating its product distribution process with the Sign Me app, built by MidAmerica Technology, a Xerox Personalised Application Builder developer. The app digitises the document-laden process, accelerating the speed in which products get out the door. “Sign Me is a breakthrough app that has greatly improved our business — we’ve gained efficiencies that impact our bottom line,” said David Hajciar, operations manager, Morrell Group.

New apps make work easier

The ongoing development of its ConnectKeyenabled portfolio underscores Xerox’s position as a print technology powerhouse. The latest enhancements make labour-intense, timeconsuming efforts easier and offer new twists on traditional ways of working. The Xerox VersaLink® and Xerox AltaLink® series are the launch pads for apps such as: Xerox Connect App for Salesforce: access to Salesforce’s Customer Relationship Management system right at the multifunction printer (MFP); upload and share sales management information to client folders by scanning the documents directly into

Salesforce. Xerox Audio Documents App: securely transforms hardcopy documents into audio files allowing commuters, multitaskers, or audio enthusiasts to listen on the go instead of reading. Xerox Connect App for QuickBooks Online: offers a hassle-free expense reimbursement process with multi-receipt scanning. MORE MIMAKI MAGIC

MIMAKI 3D PRINTER STANDS OUT Under the theme ‘Shape the Future in Colour’, Mimaki showcased its advanced colour additive manufacturing technology at the international 3D printing exhibition formnext in Frankfurt.

[R]

unning live on the stand the Mimaki 3DUJ-553 3D printer showed print service providers, designers and product developers how to reach unparalleled levels of photorealism due to its fine detail and extensive colour capability. “The colour range and vibrancy combined with the ability to match colours with such accuracy opens up some very exciting application possibilities,” stated Bert Benckhuysen, Senior Product Manager at Mimaki. “For instance, skin tones — where the slightest variations can easily be detected by the human eye — are reproduced with photorealistic quality as Mimaki meets the accuracy of scanning equipment with absolute precision. Product developers striving for accurate representations of their designs get extraordinarily smooth colour gradations, minimising granularity, and special spot colours can be created for brands with exacting requirements.” The 3DUJ-553 3D printer prints in over 10 million colours and the results are consistent and repeatable thanks to Mimaki’s unique use of ICC colour profiling. Mimaki has also developed a clear resin so full transparency and semi-transparent colour can be realised. Printing in 19, 32 or 42µm layers, the 3DUJ-553 3D printer delivers super fine detail and smooth surfaces, which are preserved during post-processing as the support material is water-soluble and simply dissolves in water. Exclusively distributed by Hybrid Services, the company held the UK and Irish launch at the TCT Show in Birmingham. “Visitors to the exhibition very quickly appreciated the creative and colour matching benefits of the Mimaki 3DUJ-553,” confirmed Brett Newman, Hybrid’s Chief Operations Manager. “Thanks to the level of detail available, the design possibilities are vast and we’re seeing potential customers really start to appreciate the application opportunities this printer presents.” Through a collaborative project with Materialise, Mimaki 3D printed models are currently available via i.materialise.com under the name Multicolor+. Miranda Bastijns, Materialise Director Manufacturing Online, comments, “Materialise is currently trialling Mimaki’s full-colour 3D printing technology. The material, Multicolor+, allows us to create smooth surfaces with vibrant colours that enhance the value of a finished object. Multicolor+ offers more vivid and intense colours and enables stronger, sturdier materials with a minimum wall thickness of 1mm. It also allows for printing interlocking parts. As a result, Multicolor+ is ideal for printing decorative parts such as figurines, avatars and architectural models.” Mimaki 3D printed models have strength comparable to ABS plastic. Printed in UV-cured photopolymer resins with inkjet printing heads, models can be handled direct from the print build tray, which is a large 500x500x300mm. The 3DUJ-553 3D printer is easy to operate either

remotely or through a touch panel. Mimaki 3D Link software also allows colours to be changed on the fly. Mimaki’s expertise in inkjet, UV and colour management derive from the company’s heritage in 2D printing according to Benckhuysen: “Our history in 2D printing is fundamental because its given us proficiency in colour management, ink circulation for maximum uptime of the printer and operability. We also understand the importance of continued investment in R&D; not only that, but it means we have excellent technical support and customer service already in place, as we look to expand our sales infrastructure.” Benckhuysen concluded, “It’s said colour speaks all languages, so our incredible range of print samples — encompassing industries from toys, entertainment, tools, medical, consumer products, signage, architectural, art and packaging — will speak for themselves. Following our successful launch last year, we were delighted to meet with the formnext community again and show them the technology, the colour and all developments we’ve made over the last year.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Christmas Evolution

The four stages of man: He believes in Santa Claus; he doesn’t believe in Santa Claus; he is Santa Claus; and he looks like Santa Claus.

What Makes Me Smile

You know what really makes me smile? Facial muscles.

Ballet Dancing Chicken

Traditional Dinner

A little girl is in the kitchen watching her mother prepare for the following day’s Christmas dinner. She asks, “Mum, can I please have a cat for Christmas?” Her mum replies, “No honey, you’ll have turkey just like the rest of us.”

Christmas Present

Did you hear about the chicken that wanted to take ballet lessons? “He wanted to be a hentertainer.”

Christmas time... That time of year when many people are more interested in the present than the past.

The Christmas Question

Lengthy Password

As a little girl climbed onto Santa’s lap, he asked her the usual question, “And what would you like for Christmas?” The child stared at him open mouthed and horrified for a minute, then gasped, “Didn’t you get my text?”

Christmas Consideration

I know. I know. People say, “It’s the thought that counts, not the gift.” But couldn’t people learn to think a bit bigger?

Deer Christmas

Two hunters got a pilot to fly them into the far north for reindeer hunting. They were quite successful in their venture and bagged six big deer. The pilot came back, as arranged, to pick them up. They started loading their gear into the plane, including the six reindeer. But the pilot objected and he said, “The plane can only take four of your deer, you will have to leave two behind.” They argued with him. The year before they had shot six and the pilot had allowed them to put all aboard. The plane was the same model and capacity. Reluctantly, the pilot finally permitted them to put all six aboard. But when they attempted to take off and leave the valley, the little plane could not make it and they crashed into the wilderness. Climbing out of the wreckage, one hunter said to the other, “Do you know where we are?” “I think so,” replied the other hunter. “I think this is about the same place where we crashed last year!”

During a recent password audit by a company, it was found that an employee was using the following password: “MickeyMinniePlutoHueyLouieDew eyDonaldGoofySacramento”. When asked why she had such a long password, the employee rolled her eyes and said, “Hello! It has to be at least eight characters long and include at least one capital.”

Family Matters

“Why doesn’t your mother like me?” a woman asks her boyfriend. “Don’t take it personally,” he assures her. “She’s never liked anyone I’ve dated. I once dated someone exactly like her, and that didn’t work out at all.” “What happened?” “My father couldn’t stand her.”

One to One

“I usually meet my girlfriend at 12:59.” “Why is that?” “Because I like that one to one time.”

Ready to go

After waiting more than an hour and a half for her date, Sarah decided she had been stood up. Exasperated, she changed from her dinner dress into pyjamas and slippers, made some popcorn and hot chocolate, and resigned herself to an evening of TV. No sooner had she flopped down in front of the TV than the doorbell rang. Her dad went to the door, and there stood her date. He took one look at Sarah on the couch and gasped. “I’m two hours late and she’s still not ready?”

Your Honour

A man wanted to be dismissed from jury duty, but none of his excuses worked. So on the day of the trial, he asked to approach the bench. “Your Honour,” he said, “I must be excused from this trial because I am prejudiced against the defendant.” “Oh?” the judge asked. “Yes!” the man replied. “I took one look at the man in the blue suit with those beady eyes and that dishonest face, and I thought, ‘He’s a crook! He’s 100% guilty.’ So, your Honour, I couldn’t possibly be on this jury!” The judge replied, “Get back in the jury box. You are just the kind of juror we are seeking--a good judge of character.” The man protested, “How can you say that?” “Because,” the judge said, “that man is measuring us up for a new photocopier”.

Ineffective Pain Pills

“Evidently, my pain pills are not working.” “Why do you say that?” “Well, you’re still here.”

Email Hacked Again

My email password has been hacked again. That’s the third time I’ve had to rename the cat!

World’s Worst Caddy

Golfer: “You must be the world’s worst caddy!” Caddy: “No, that would be too much of a coincidence.”

75 Years

It’s strange to think 75 years ago everyone owned a horse and only the rich had cars. Today everyone has a car and only the rich own horses.

Absentee Slips

In the HR department in the large corporation where I work, I receive absentee slips for all the employees. Over the years I’ve heard every excuse, but the other day I found one in my voicemail that I never heard before. “I won’t be in today,” said my absent co-worker. “I’ll call back later with an excuse when I sober up a bit.”

Don’t Call Me Son

I got a lift to the eleventh floor, and as I got out, the operator said “Have a good day, son.” “Don’t call me son,” I said. “You’re not my dad.” He scratched his head, “No, but I brought you up, didn’t I?”
