ANTALIS PAPER ARTIST COLLECTIVE CHARITY CALENDAR
Antalis has donated paper for the printing of the Paper Artist Collective’s 2022 charity calendar, which has been created to raise funds for Art Refuge. Art Refuge supports the mental health and well being of people displaced due to conflict, persecution and poverty – in the UK and internationally. The charity calendar was created in response to the sense of isolation and loss felt by many during the pandemic. The Paper Artist Collective’s calendar is the first project for which the collective’s members have produced work specifically to be photographed and printed, so it was crucial that the choice of print
substrate was capable of reproducing the intricacies of the paper art. Sammie Quinn, who helps run the collective, felt it was also important that the calendar had a tactile feel, commenting “The work of the collective’s members can be very delicate, so we wanted a paper that would produce high quality print, whilst having a feel of softness to it.” In response to the collective’s requirements, Antalis worked with Service Graphics, who printed the calendar. Together, they selected a paper that would meet all the criteria; iPrint Digital Uncoated in 200gsm, an FSC certified premium, wood free uncoated paper, which provides a superb printing
surface and is guaranteed for HP Indigo digital. iPrint Digital Uncoated has been awarded the EU Ecolabel and is elemental chlorine free (ECF). It is four star rated on the Antalis Green Star System™. Charlotte Rowe, Antalis Paper Consultant comments, “We are thrilled to be supporting the Paper Artist Collective and Art Refuge. It is an honour to donate the paper which will contribute towards making a truly beautiful piece of work to raise money for Art Refuge. iPrint Digital Uncoated provides a high quality print, whilst maintaining the smoothness required by the collective.” www.antalis.com
WHITTINGTON MOOR EXPANDS WITH HORIZON STITCHLINER
Chesterfield commercial printer Whittington Moor Printing has chosen an IFS supplied Horizon StitchLiner MK III to increase production capacity and enhance its service delivery. “We had our previous StitchLiner for six years and it has been great,” states Managing Director Paul Gamble. “We chose the StitchLiner MKIII as an upgrade because we know and trust the Horizon technology. It is so much easier finishing from a flat sheet and we were very happy with the performance and reliability of the StitchLiner’s technology. “We wanted a system that was going to be more efficient and also enable us to do more of the same but faster. We also wanted greater production flexibility. We were running the older StitchLiner 24 hours a day and expect to do the same with this one. We particularly liked the A4 landscape option. We don’t do a lot of that work at the moment but it does give us another capability.” He continues: “We also invested in a third ten bin collating tower which has made us much more productive. We complete a 56 page product every month and that used to take 12 hours with 20 bins. With 30 bins it was finished in five hours. The extra tower makes such a difference.” Whittington Moor’s next generation StitchLiner will finish work produced on a Heidelberg XL75, 3 Xerox Versant 3100s and a Formall 485S. It runs

at 6,000 booklets per hour. Its fully automated set-up delivers improved production efficiency and functionality, A4 landscape capability and professional quality. As well as the confidence in Horizon technology, a key consideration for the investment was the relationship with IFS adds Paul: “IFS are helpful and reliable which is very important.” www.ifsl.uk.com

BPIF CELEBRATES THEIR LEARNERS’ ACHIEVEMENTS The BPIF recently hosted a live graduation and awards ceremony at the St Bride Foundation in London. It was an opportunity for learners who have completed their courses and made outstanding progress to come together with guests to celebrate all their hard work. The graduation and awards ceremony was held in St. Brides Hall in London, and was a celebration which brought together graduates that had completed their Level 5 Management Course with the BPIF over the past two years, plus Level 2, 3 and 5 apprentices that have gone above and beyond in their work to be recognised for outstanding achievement. The day began with a welcome and congratulatory speech by Ian Wilton, President of the BPIF, who went on to explain his inspirational journey through the industry starting out as an apprentice. This was followed by Karly Lattimore, Managing Director of BPIF Training, expressing how proud she was of the cohorts and what has been achieved in such an unprecedented year. CORPORATE ESG BOOM IN GARMENT PRINTING A European study launched by Roland has revealed that an increased focus on environment, societal and governance (ESG) factors inside Europe’s corporates and SMBs is driving a sustainability boom amongst its garment printers. Conducted just a month before COP26, the study polled 200 garment printers serving a cross section of large businesses and SMEs in Europe. It revealed that more than two thirds (64%) had observed an increase in customers ordering sustainable garments, and the majority (51%) reported a sharp increase of 30% or more. The survey also reveals that this spike in interest is driving commercial opportunities for the sector. Nearly half (48%) of those polled classify sustainability as a ‘major commercial opportunity’ for their business. A third believe customers are willing to pay more money for sustainable garments, and a quarter say they generate bigger margins. Rosie Lees, founder and MD at The Embroidery Barn in the UK comments: “When I relaunched the business in 2018, I decided to focus on the sustainability of our garments and printing
practices and expected that within five to seven years it would pay off. In reality I haven’t had to wait that long. The last 18 months it’s been our major growth driver and 95% of our customers mention sustainability when they enquire.” There is strong evidence that customers believe printing practices play a critical role in sustainability. Two thirds (64%) of those polled reported an increase in enquiries about the eco-friendliness of these practices. Garment printers are responding by investing in environmentally friendly printers, inks and equipment. Despite the economic downturn
caused by COVID-19, a massive 47 per cent of garment printers had taken steps to increase the sustainability of their printing practices. Encarna Luque, Textile Lead at European print company Roland DG comments: “ESG is firmly in the spotlight and as a result we’ve observed a major shift in customer priorities away from price and towards sustainability. Garment printers are some of the most entrepreneurial business owners in our sector, and it’s no surprise to see them investing in this emerging opportunity despite the challenging macroeconomic environment.” www.rolanddg.eu
JUST PRINT INCREASE OUTPUT AND EXTENDS SERVICE Dublin-based print and signage production company Just Print has praised the impact of its new HP Latex 800W, saying that the printer has enabled it to expand its service offering and allowed the business to move ahead of competitors in a busy market. Founded in 2007 and operating out of a specialist facility in Ballymount, Just Print offers both digital and lithographic print services, as well as full in-house signage production, working with a wide range of customers from a host of markets and industries. This far reaching service offering means Just Print is required to run state of the art, full colour print machinery at its facility – a business ethos that led to the purchase of its new HP Latex 800W, which was installed earlier this year and has since become an integral part of the company’s production line-up. “We installed an HP Latex 365 a couple of years ago and we were really impressed with the quality of the print, so there was no hesitation in going back to HP when we wanted to add another machine,” Just Print’s Operations Manager Ian Byrne said. “The primary aim of the new investment was to extend our service offering. The new white ink capability on the HP Latex 800W allows us to stand out in an ever growing and competitive print market. “Since its installation, the HP Latex 800W printer has enabled us to increase our output considerably; we use it to print everything from small run vinyl to full signage fit outs, as well as any clear vinyl backed with white which can now be done in a single pass.” The HP Latex 800W printer has a suite of features that enables print service providers – such as Just Print – to be more agile, tackle ambitious projects and take on the highest value work. As well as boosting productivity levels, the printer enables businesses to sharpen their sustainability edge thanks to its eco-credentials. The latest water based HP Latex Inks used in HP Latex printers are GREENGUARD GOLD-certified and have been designed to avoid the hazards associated with other inks. Accordingly, they can be used for applications installed in even the most sensitive environments such as schools and hospitals.
6
With the expanded capabilities delivered by the HP Latex 800W, Ian and the team at Just Print are now looking at how the company can expand into new markets, with the retail sector being one possible target segment. “We are hoping to extend our services into the retail sector,” Ian said. “Being able to print white saves time and money on reverse out window vinyl. We are also making gains by bringing back a lot of work in-house which – prior to the purchase of the HP Latex 800W printer – had to be outsourced. “Our entire production team loves both the simplicity and ease of use of the HP Latex 800W; with the majority of parts being interchangeable by the operator, it saves us on down time.” Ian also praised the role approved HP reseller Diatec played in both the purchase and installation of the printer. “The service support from Diatec was a major factor of staying with HP; their staff are always at hand to help with any queries that may arise.” www.hp.com

NEW MIMAKI HIGH QUALITY 3D PRINTING SOLUTION
Mimaki exhibited its new technologies launched at Formnext 2021 last month offering a complete 3D printing solution designed to streamline and optimise 3D model production with increased automation. The new end to end solution features the Mimaki 3D Print prep Pro cloud based software service, compatible with all Mimaki 3DUJ-series printers. Designed to simplify the 3D printing process, the new platform helps user prepare and finalise their 3D files before printing. This cutting edge subscription based software autocorrects file errors and optimises 3D data used in 3D printer modelling, ensuring that the final 3D printed objects look exactly the same as the ones visualised on the screen. Users of Mimaki’s most recent 3D printing innovation, the Mimaki 3DUJ2207, can then speed up and automate their post print workflow with the new Mimaki 3DCS-322 — an intelligent support materials removal unit developed in collaboration with AM Solutions – 3D post processing technology. “With this complete solution for the Mimaki 3DUJ-2207, professionals and prosumers in any discipline can reinvent the way they work by adding scalable, full colour 3D print production,” explains Arjen Evertse, General Manager Sales EMEA, Mimaki. “This suite of 3D technology is one of the most affordable high quality, full colour 3D solutions available and opens the door to anyone who previously felt the benefits of 3D printing were out of
8
reach, such as creatives, designers using prototypes, scale model makers, entrepreneurs and medical research or educational bodies. The entire package will be exhibited at Formnext, and we can’t wait to see the market’s reaction to this breakthrough in accessible, full colour 3D printing.” 3D print professionals from the UK and Ireland will shortly be able to view the machine at Mimaki’s distributor, Hybrid Services, with a solution comprising the 3DUJ-2207 and 3DCS-322 available to demo in its Cheshire showroom. The company’s Martin Southworth invites businesses to register their interest: “Visit our dedicated Mimaki 3D website (www.mimaki3d.co.uk) for more information on the 3DUJ-2207 and we’ll ensure you’re among the first in the country to see the new printer in action,” he offers. With so many professionals turning to 3D printing as a way to quickly and accurately produce models, the requirement for a fast, user friendly 3D data correction software has never been greater. Mimaki recognised this need and created the 3D Print prep Pro platform to ensure users that its 3D printing technology could easily and effectively correct data errors, as well as optimise the shape of the model, carefully balancing image quality and processing speed. Further enhancing the Mimaki 3DUJ-2207 user experience is the addition of a new 3DCS-322 automated post processing unit. Partnering with market leading 3D printing and additive manufacturing equipment solutions provider, AM Solutions – 3D post processing technology (a brand of the Rösler Group), Mimaki has introduced an Industry 4.0-ready, highly efficient support material removal system. The software driven technology offers users a consistent, repeatable process at a higher speed than traditional methods, but without compromising even the most delicate, detailed geometries or the colour nuance of the 3D parts. “Bringing together AM Solutions’ specialism and Mimaki’s expertise has produced a truly innovative, safe and simple post processing solution with an attractive price performance ratio,” says Arjen Evertse. “By presenting this new system alongside our new software service and latest printing technology, we aim to provide Formnext visitors with an experience that will make this eagerly-anticipated event worth the wait.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

FIRST COLOUR INSTALLS FIRST CANON ARIZONA 135 GT Central London based 24 hour print and graphics provider First Colour has installed the first Canon Arizona UV 135 GT flatbed printer in the UK to facilitate its ambitious wide format print growth strategy. Located on Newman Street in a 4500 sq.ft. production space just off London’s iconic Oxford Street, First Colour has traditionally been a specialist in super fast turnaround small format print. It modified this strategy four years ago after identifying opportunities in the wide format print market. Cliff Finn, owner and managing director of First Colour explains: “We were aware of the stagnation in recent years within the small format market as pressures from the internet took a predictable toll. We identified wide format print as having positive growth – and in Central London, 24-hour operators like us providing a fast turnaround wide format service just didn’t exist. “Naturally, we wanted to be active within a growth market and wide format is just that. We love wide format print as a creative process and the fact that it must be based on a real human customer relationship that involves trust and working together. This isn’t something that’s ever going to be on the internet.” This change in approach proved to be a shrewd move for the company. Its wide format business is now well established in the sector, supplying leading retail heavyweights throughout Central London. During the pandemic, plans to invest further were put on hold, but as business returned to near normal, investment plans were dusted off. Following long and detailed consultations with ADAPT’s specialist staff, First Colour became the first company in the UK to purchase the Canon Arizona 135 GT UV flatbed printer. With print speeds up to 34.2 m2 per hour and the award winning VariaDot imaging technology for producing sensational prints, the Canon Arizona 135 GT is renowned for its incredible quality, impressive reliability and realistic pricing structure. The Canon Arizona 135 GT was installed at First Colour in early October 2021, along with a Summa flatbed cutting system, and while staff training is continuing, Cliff Finn says they already have plenty of work scheduled in for the new machine. Whilst maintaining existing service levels for First Colour’s established clients, Cliff is also keen to explore how the highly flexible Canon Arizona 135 GT can assist the company’s expansion into other areas of the wide-format market. Cliff explains: “We have our bread and butter work to properly establish first, but there are lots of other markets we can look at with the new Canon that we couldn’t previously access. For example, we plan on recruiting additional sales personnel later this year to help us move into hard signage and develop that side of the business. “Before the pandemic, we operated an entry level hybrid board printer which got us into the marketplace, but it was always the plan to acquire a
10
high quality flatbed printer. If I’m honest, we always hankered after a Canon machine. “Canon is the ultimate printer’s choice and the best in the market, but we didn’t think our budget would stretch that far. However, after an initial discussion with ADAPT, we were surprised to find that the new 135GT was on a par price wise with competing solutions.” Cliff also highlighted the key benefits that both First Colour and its clients will enjoy because of the new investment, singling out the low cost inks used on the Canon Arizona 135 GT – inks that are also environmentally friendly and offer a significantly
greener option than other products. “Customers recognise the quality of the Arizona – we’ve proved that in the first few jobs,” Cliff said. “As well as the actual printer, you also buy into the extensive Canon knowledge, service expertise and excellent staff. Cliff concludes: “We are delighted to be working with ADAPT and Canon as they work with us as true partners, it’s a breath of fresh air to be honest. The original dream of bringing a sustainable high quality 24-hour print service to our Retail POS customers finally became reality.” www.amaridigital.com

IT’S THE WAY THAT YA DO IT!
Readers of several generations may recognise the second line of one of those irritating songs that keep coming back from the days when variety shows were anything but that, given the limited choice available in terrestrial television and radio before the digital age and the internet. Martin Christiescribes…
B
ut it occurs to me that the simple, almost nonsense lyrics, do have a relevant message today, even though it was unlikely to have been anticipated by the songwriters who thought they were just penning a catchy ditty. The theme is that it’s not what you actually do but how you achieve it that gets the results, and that’s actually quite profound, although philosophy might not have been top of the author’s tick list at the time of writing a basic jingle. It’s actually a concept similar to an ancient proverb about it being better to know how to go but not where, rather than where to go but not how. And this is not just semantics. If you understand the process, you will find the answer. If you have a result but don’t really know how you achieved it, is it a result or just a lucky chance? This came to mind when I had planned to devote most of this month’s double-header column to the major updates Adobe had made to Photoshop in October but found that even after a few weeks, many commentators raised issues with the direction that artificial intelligence has been going. This is a point that will be familiar to regular readers here, but I’m going to place it into context before moving on. This has always been a photography-based column and has charted the transition from film to digital with all the many changes that have resulted for both photographers and printers who have adjusted to the new environment. In twenty years, digital imaging has been placed in the hands of everyone, and technology has made it easier for the average customer to take great pictures. But turning them to print is a totally different matter. While snapping a great shot is made a lot easier by improvements in the devices, whether phone or full camera, turning it into more than a screenshot still requires some skill and judgement. When everyone had a phone camera, the marketing department needed more than extra megapixels to make a sales pitch in a very competitive market. So filters that improved the look of the image began to appear. These were the beginnings of using a form of artificial intelligence in photography, developed by some very smart people using advanced techniques to perform some apparently simple tricks. But they were limited by the constraints of the little 14
screen and not immediately transferable, as few with influence saw the direction that could be opened up by interrogating the very pixels in a picture. Google, for example, bought the small but clever software company Nik just to get its hands on the phone app it had created and almost immediately sold it on again, ditching the much more sophisticated cutting edge image editing suite it had created. However, in more enlightened hands, Nik lives on and is still being improved with its UI technology being copied by many others. Adobe was soon to pick up on these things and pushed forward its own Sensei learning tool to be incorporated into many of the features of Photoshop, enabling the basic copy and paste of cloning, for example, to become seamless content aware, along with healing and blending, by comparing adjacent pixels rather than just duplicating them. There is no question that this has been a major revolution in image editing, the most advanced in its twenty years of development. The controversy is over whether it all makes it much too easy and undermines the value of the expert. There are the purists you will never convince, who think digital editing is the devil’s tool, and anything that isn’t entirely created by the photographer’s eye and the camera lens isn’t proper. Most of these never spent hours in the darkroom patiently printing test strips in order to get just one print perfect. If they did, they would never begrudge a few electronic aids and shortcuts. And of course, in those days, you were only handling a small number of images on a film, compared to dozens or hundreds now created at the press of a shutter, so being able to make pictures better, faster is at a premium. The theory of a perfect photograph straight out of the camera is a myth; even the greatest exponents will tell you that. It is not a science, though it uses science as a tool. It also needs a creative eye and a good slice of luck — something artificial intelligence can never calculate. What AI does is significantly improve the tools available and push the boundaries of what is possible. Knowing what I can do on the computer later is an important asset when I’m shooting, but it still needs experience and judgement, not just guesswork. In all my many years snapping, I don’t think
I’ve ever pressed the shutter knowing I’d taken a great shot — hoping I had surely, but the proof was always in the developing tank, or nowadays on the monitor. And that is the real issue. Most people are snapping away, expecting to take a great picture because the much-hyped performance of their overpriced device should be able to do all that for them. But, unfortunately, relying on technology alone will only result in random results. Most importantly, without knowing how, a lucky shot will always be just that and not the reward of any skill. It is therefore quite rare for a perfect picture to be presented for print, which is the big issue for the print on demand studio — can you afford time improving it, or risk losing a sale by throwing it back at the customer, or having a finished print rejected because it’s not what was expected. It’s not an easy judgement if you don’t know how difficult it will be or how long it’s going to take. So getting to know all the tools you have available is very important, especially as they are updating all the time. I can’t cover all of the details of the new features, and they are better seen visually online both via the Adobe website and many helpful tutorials done by those who have the time to sort out the important things from the novelties. But I will point you in the right direction with what will be most useful for print rather than strictly photographic use. If you’ve been following adventures in Photoshop here over the years, you will recognise that many features are not so much new as updates on previous versions but with some significant improvements. Most importantly, a number of Photoshop features that were not possible in Lightroom are now there and have also been incorporated into Camera RAW, helping to make a more complete workflow. As we always stress that other software is available, however, you are not likely to miss out if you are using any of the more professional alternatives. They are bound to introduce similar aids even if they give them different names. Recently, I was able to advise a customer using Affinity even though I had the briefest introduction to it. It’s easier to explain if you know how things work. Photoshop and Lightroom essentially do the same job but in different ways. Lightroom is non-destructive in that you only commit DECEMBER 2021-JANUARY 2022 • QUICK PRINT PRO

changes when you choose to export the results. Photoshop uses layers for adjustment that can be modified or blended in various ways before producing a single print file. And using those layers, it was also able to select and mask parts of an image to either remove them or make alterations to them. Essentially the new masking tools refine the automatic selection of items and subjects, which previously could be a more long-winded process, and the masks are now available in Lightroom. In fact, several masks can be selected so you can quickly separate a person from the background, the sky, or the foreground. This is very useful as the general problem with customer images — even if they are in focus — is poor exposure caused by automated settings. The sky is too bright, the subject too dark, and all the many things that result from letting a processor make instant decisions on what is important. By separating the sections, small — or larger — adjustments can be made without affecting the whole image. Adobe haven’t reinvented the wheel. Much of the magic could be done in previous versions of Photoshop, but it took longer, needed more patience and therefore ultimately cost more to do. And you needed more training or experience to know what to do. Like everything in AI, the process is anticipating what you want to do and speeding up the time needed to do it, as much as improving the quality of the output. Of course, ultimately, you are still letting a machine make decisions and preferences for you, and it is important to remember that while it may be intelligent, it is not necessarily smart. Having worked extensively with contentaware, particularly with photomerge over recent years, restoring images and piecing together parts of larger ones, I know how frustrating they can fail at sometimes apparently simple tasks. And so it is with the improved masking tools which are being asked to do quite subtle tasks which seem obvious to our eye but may not be so clear cut when reduced to mere pixels.
Object selection in Photoshop needs a helping hand
Masking sky, sea and subject in Lightroom
If you are new to Photoshop, this may sound and look a bit daunting, but it is well worthwhile getting abreast of it because it really is the future of imaging if you are serious about print production. Customers original photography is not about to improve anytime soon, but their expectations will only be raised in terms of what’s possible in hard copy. If you think about it, the camera, and operator, has only a fraction of a second to make a decision on composition even if the operator knows what they are doing. On the other hand, on a computer, you have as much time as you like to dissect the result and put it back together again to create a decent restoration. Old hands may think this is a long way from the traditional copy shop, which is where we started as a magazine, but how often back in the day did you spend time making small adjustments to colour and density options on the copier to get a print just right? It’s just an updated process, and the more you
QUICK PRINT PRO • DECEMBER 2021-JANUARY 2022
understand how it works, the more useful it will become. Actual print technology moves on comparatively slowly, so the one thing that can make a major difference is the information you are sending to the printer. The one limiting factor may be processing power, which is an issue with most new software. Adobe Photoshop makes an increasing demand on display graphics and recommends a dedicated graphics processor of at least 2GB rather than the one that is normally installed as part of the system. Photoshop will run without this assistance but may well pause trying to show some actions like selection and crop tools. If this becomes a problem, the answer is to take a step back to a previous version using the Creative Cloud interface until you can update your GPU. You won’t have all the latest toys, but you can still perform a lot of the tasks; it just might take you longer. That’s, of course, if you know how to! 15

FASHION IN PRINT
EPSON TECHNOLOGY
PRINT FASHION
Richard Quinn, a fashion designer who used Epson technology to create his autumn winter 2021 collection and design its showcase film set said…
T
his season we wanted to challenge ourselves with what we could print and how we could apply print to lots of different things. We wanted to go beyond just making clothes. Usually for a collection we would work for two to three months. For this collection we had the luxury of around six months. It gave us time for our ideas to grow and for lots of things to develop whether it was the design, the textiles or the shape of the clothes. We reached out to Epson just to see what type of range of fabrics they have and what designs could go on different things from nonslip flooring to wrapping cars and vehicles. We printed on so many more medias and substrates than we ever usually would have. Our vision was a world of Richard Quinn having an element that could interact within the space, people and characters in the film. I am from London and the film is very London centric so we quickly settled on wrapping London taxis. People are looking for escapism right now and the brand, the prints and everything we do is all about the fantasy of fashion. I’m a fan of fashion. I love creating a form of escapism for people. So, if that is people dressed as cats dancing on taxis I think then so be it. And moving forward it is something we would want to keep for any future events. It was interesting to see how a print, usually for a garment, would be stretched on a taxi, on a different scale. All the print colour and quality pretty much worked the same which was amazing. With a strict production deadline and things having to be turned around quite fast it was great to see how an idea that started out quite quickly could be turned around in time for the film. It was within two or three days that the printed taxis appeared. Imaging the sets this season was exciting as was seeing them transform from a design to something in real life. We wanted to match everything from the print for the walls to the non-slip vinyl to be sure the dancers could perform safely while getting the aesthetic right. Everything printed in the film came through the Epson printers including the set and the back drops. Another time challenge was quickly turning over the set within the production. The best solution that the production company found was to print the fabric and stretch it over the flats. Obviously, we could do that in-house so we could work out the bleed, lengths of fabric and print all within our own space. We could 20
take some of the heavy lifting away from the production. For us as a brand it is important that all our prints are vibrant, have consistency and are accurate to what we see on the screen. The uniform way in which the Epson printers print the fabric allows us to not only use it for show samples but for production as well. Dye-sublimation for us is our go to process. Lots of print processes, we have found, have water waste and different chemicals going into the water and filtration process. We like the two step process, print and heat transfer, and then the opportunity we always recycle our papers through an external company. As a 360 for is it is no brainer to use this process. We use Epson dye sub printers because the coverage of fabric we get, depth of colours and also the detail in which the shades come out. On our screen we make subtle changes to the print and it is interesting to see how such a small change can make a fabric have the feel of either luxury or something quite mass produced. What you see on the screen and all the hand drawings that are turned into prints are all the detail that is within the Epson printer
which is great for us because it cuts down time as well. I have been using Epson technology since I was a student and my very first collection. It is a partnership that keeps moving forward and has grown as our business has grown. We can see how not only the technology has developed but us as a brand and the prints that we use. Coming from a fashion design background from print where everything I did was manually or through a computer, having printers that you don’t have to be too tech savvy to use is great for everyone in the team. We have lots of different people doing lots of different things but everyone knows how to use the printers on a basic level. We can make the artwork and know across different substrates and media it is always going to look the same and at the quality we require. From day one it has been important to make sure we have a part in the whole process of making the garment so we are fully aware of where everything comes from. It builds on the ethos of our brand. Being able to print everything within one studio and know where all our fabrics come from is something that we want to focus more on in the future. For us cutting down our carbon footprint is of the utmost importance. So, to be able to produce our own collections and all our own fabric in house on the Epson SureColor F9300 and the SureColor SC F9200 — and we can print from one of our signature Duchess coats to one of our puffer jackets – within one space is great. www.epson.co.uk

PRINT AND PAPER, MYTHS AND FACTS When it comes to the sustainability of print and paper, it is important to separate the facts from the myths. Two Sides, the print and paper advocacy group, has announced the release of the NEW Myths & Facts booklet. A smart new design with updated facts on paper and the environment, from European forest growth and paper’s low energy consumption to the high recycling rate of paper and the circular economy. The European paper industry is a world leader when it comes to sustainably sourced raw materials, renewable energy and recycling rates. Yet the myths around paper are still prevalent amongst consumers. A 2021 survey by Two Sides1 revealed that 64% of European consumers believe European forests are shrinking when, in fact, they have been growing by an area equivalent to 1,500 football pitches every day.2 The total volume of Europe’s forests is approximately 28 billion m3, a figure which is currently growing by about 612 million m3 annually 3. Forests support the livelihoods of millions of people. They are vital for conservation, biodiversity, energy supply, soil and water protection. Often the source of these misconceptions is the abundance of misleading information about paper and its impact on the environment. Paper has been the preferred communications medium for 2,000 years. Even in today’s digital world, it continues to be highly effective, and when produced, used and
22
disposed of effectively, is inherently sustainable. “Two Sides seeks to ensure that by fostering a better understanding of our industry’s environmental credentials, print and paper – through its myriad of uses, from commercial applications to the basis of learning and creativity – remains an essential medium for many generations to come.” says Jonathan Tame, Managing Director of Two Sides UK. Tame continues, “The Myths & Facts booklet explains to brands, retailers and consumers, nine powerful reasons that show just how sustainable paper products really are. Two Sides members are encouraged to use these facts in their marketing communications to further spread the reach of paper’s positive sustainable story.” Members of Two Sides have access to a large library of communications tools, including the new packaging booklet, which can be co-branded with their company logo. They also have access to consumer research, industryleading information, sustainability advice, and events. In view of the results of a recent survey of the 2020 visitors, in which over 75% advised they are definitely going to or very likely to visit, together with the fact that the show regularly attracts over 2,000 first time visitors, they are expecting visitor numbers to be similar to those of recent years, which have been in excess of 5,500. Printwear & Promotion LIVE! is regarded as the annual launch pad for new garment decoration equipment, accessories and clothing lines. There are currently over 100 stands on the floorplan, with the vast majority of the major equipment suppliers, clothing distributors and brands already on board. Show director Tony Gardner comments: “It is really pleasing to see the level of commitment from our regular exhibitors, together with the firm intentions of our visitors to be back in force again in 2022. We also have several new exhibitors signed up, which are sure to be of interest to visitors. As things stand, we are very confident of putting on another successful show and following a year of the industry not being able to come together, fully expect it to live up to its tag line of The Un-missable Reunion!” As usual the show will provide a vibrant, dynamic and interactive event for the garment decoration industry. In addition to hosting a vast number of exhibitors who are eager to showcase their new products and garments, Printwear &
ARTSYSTEMS INTERACTIVE NEW VIRTUAL DEMO SUITE
ArtSystems, a specialist systems distributor and service provider has announced the launch of its brand new Virtual Demo Suite, allowing customers to experience in-depth product demonstrations from the comfort of their own offices. The ArtSystems Virtual Demo Suite makes it even easier for customers to gain an insight into the wide array of high quality products and services available from ArtSystems. Hosted from ArtSystems’ existing demonstration facility in Nottingham, the new suite has been equipped with a full audio visual (AV) system, allowing for interaction with specialist ArtSystems staff during live demonstrations. There are also pre-recorded virtual demos, available on-demand, via the site. Booking a session in the virtual demo suite removes the need for customers to have to travel to ArtSystems’ physical demonstration facility and instead allows them to view expert demos remotely. For those customers that want to see the equipment in action first hand, they can still book in for a live demo at the ArtSystems existing demonstration facility in Nottingham. According to Andrew Edwards, Applications Division Manager, at ArtSystems: “In these post-pandemic times, we understand that people are not always comfortable travelling to different destinations to access print solutions. Time constraints can also be an issue. We’ve listened to our resellers and customers and are bringing the demonstrations to them, virtually. “We look forward to welcoming visitors to our new online suite.” www.artsystems.co.uk

XEROX RECEIVES HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES’ TERRA CARTA SEAL Xerox announced it has been awarded the Terra Carta Seal. The inaugural 2021 Terra Carta Seal recognises global companies that are driving innovation and demonstrating their commitment to creating genuinely sustainable markets and aligning with the ambitions of the Terra Carta recovery plan for Nature, People and Planet, which launched in January 2021. “The Terra Carta Seal recognises those organisations which have made a serious commitment to a future that is much more sustainable, and puts nature, people and the planet at the heart of the economy. We all need to make changes if we are to preserve the planet for our children and grandchildren and these businesses
have pledged to make it easier for us all to do so,” said His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. The Terra Carta Seal has been awarded to companies who hold a leadership position within their industry and who have credible transition roadmaps underpinned by globally recognised, scientific metrics for achieving net zero by 2050 or earlier. “We would like to thank His Royal Highness for spearheading the inaugural Terra Carta Seal launch, and we are honoured to receive this recognition. At Xerox, we have long believed businesses, like ours, play a critical role in protecting the health of the planet while creating a brighter future for all. With a roadmap for achieving
net zero by 2040, our commitments exceed the requirements of the Terra Carta. We are proud to lead the way in driving sustainable innovation. In doing so, we are helping solve some of the world’s biggest challenges,” said John Visentin, Vice Chairman and CEO, Xerox. With climate change being one of today’s defining issues, Xerox this year fast tracked its net zero goal by 10 years to 2040, as noted in its 2021 Corporate Social Responsibility Report. The report marks the first time Xerox published its roadmap to net zero. The roadmap particularly focuses on improving processes and energy efficiency, as well as designing environmentally responsible products and clean technologies. Xerox prepared the 2021 CSR report according to Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) standards and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). www.xerox.com
THE FINANCIAL IMPACT OF GREENWASHING Greenwashing is pervasive and often used in marketing communications to misrepresent products and services as environmentally friendly. For the paper, print and mailing industries involved in the production and mailing of household bills and statements, Greenwashing threatens the loss of £22 million from a market sector estimated to be worth £555 million annually. With an increasing desire to save costs, service providers, customer facing organisations and even governmental departments are increasingly focused on switching consumers and citizens away from paper to digital services. All too often the encouragement to ‘go digital’ is accompanied by messages attempting to justify these cost saving initiatives with misleading and unsubstantiated environmental marketing appeals such as “Go Green – Go Paperless” and “Choose e-billing and help save trees”. Unfounded Greenwashing messages such as these reach and influence millions of consumers every year. Two Sides, a non-profit industry organisation which promotes the attractiveness and sustainability of print, paper and paper packaging, actively engages organisations making misleading and unsupported environmental claims against print and paper with an Anti-Greenwash campaign which, over the past 10 years, has successfully challenged over 750 global organisations; primarily service providers like banks, utilities and telecoms. The importance of tackling and getting Greenwash removed is made clear when the financial cost to the paper, print and mailing industries which employ, in the UK, 116,000 people in more than 8,400 businesses, is better understood. A research project conducted in May 2021 by Two Sides in partnership with consumer research organisation Censuswide reveals that, in the UK, Greenwashing risks the loss of £22 million of value for the paper, print and mailing industries. But Greenwashing can be stopped and, so far, by engaging with major Greenwashers in the UK, the Two Sides campaign has: • Preserved £11.2 million of value for the sector • Stopped Greenwash messages being seen over 209 million times every year Organisations who Greenwash also take the risk of harming their reputation with consumers. UK consumer research conducted by Two Sides1 found that:
26
• 76% want the right to choose how they receive communications (digitally or printed) from organisations • 67% understand that organisations who Greenwash want to save costs by switching to digital bills and statements • 40% do not want to be forced to switch to digital bills and statements • 38% disbelieve environmental messaging altogether. Two Sides Managing Director Jonathan Tame, commenting on the anti-greenwash campaign, says: “Greenwashing claims are not welcomed by consumers, are often in breach of established environmental marketing rules, and are hugely damaging to an industry which has a solid and continually improving environmental record. A healthy market for forest products such as paper and paper packaging encourage the long term growth of forests through sustainable forest management and the encouragement of biodiversity. Forests play a critical role in mitigating CO2 and provide wider benefits for conservation and biodiversity and, it may be surprising to learn that, European forests have actually been growing by the equivalent area of 1,500 football pitches every day.2 Two Sides continues to actively challenge major organisations found to be misleading consumers by using environmental claims about the use of paper. MERCH MADNESS TOP TRENDS Merchandising expert and founder of leading printing company, ICON Printing, Alex Econs, weighs in with his verdict on the top merch trends this season Hospitality merch — At a time when the hospitality industry was in tatters due to the pandemic –many businesses began producing and selling covetable, design savvy merchandise.
Alex Econs, founder of ICON Printing said: “We have seen increasing numbers of bakeries, breweries, restaurants and even coffee shops investing in merch that doubles up as both staff uniforms and sellable wares. The hospitality industry has always been quick to capitalise on retail opportunities but never at the same level as during the pandemic. At ICON Printing, we have seen a 143% increase in t-shirts and tote bags orders at Icon since 2019 from coffee shops alone. “For those in the food and drinks industry, merch is often an essential means for smaller restaurants and bars to build their following and promote their brand. Loyal gastronomes and craft beer connoisseurs are able to pledge fealty to their favourite venues via T-shirts, hats and trusty tote bags. “As the independent bars and restaurants continue to rise in popularity, expect to see continued growth of merch. Forget cheap, overly branded souvenirs — this is merch with serious design kudos and flair. If there was ever a time to invest in merchandise for your hospitality venue,
it’s now.” Netflix merch — The streaming behemoth’s shows certainly have taken the world by storm, from 1970s nostalgia tripping with Stranger Things to the Korean absurdism of Squid games, it’s no wonder Netflix has taken the world by storm, capturing the cultural zeitgeist like no other entertainment platform. Alex, said: “Stranger Things’ nostalgia trip single handedly revitalised the public’s love of the 1970s, and Netflix were quick to capitalise on the fixation. From video games1, board games2, pinball machines3 and even their own burger4, the media giant’s focused approach to expansion has allowed for a continuous relevance across social media. “Netflix’s most recent breakout success was Squid Games; Not only did green and white tracksuits become an instant best seller shortly after the series premiere, but sales of “white, slip-on Vans” have also increased by a staggering 7,800%5 since the series premiere. “Netflix’s quick turnaround on official merchandise has allowed them to capitalise of the show’s massive popularity. Squid Games’ instant success has led to Netflix recently launching their own online merchandise store. The store jumped to the number one position on Google searches6 for ‘Netflix Merch’, allowing them to enter the merchandise market several years later than expected without missing a beat. And as it continues to see its subscription numbers slow7, expect to see the streaming giant continue to expand into the e-commerce market.” Supermarket Style — Lidl launched its four product #LidlByLidl merch range of distinctive and playful blue, red and yellow trainers, socks, swimming shorts and tote bag in September and Twitter went crazy! Earlier in the year, Aldi also released its own line of sportswear and loungewear, named Aldi Mania8. Again, there was a huge increase in interest with a 100% increase in searches during April9. Alex said: “We have seen a number of supermarkets release merchandise over the past year and from the news coverage and social media storm we have seen it generate, it is undeniably a
great marketing tactic for brands. It’s become very apparent to us that Brits love novelty merchandise and supermarket merch is this season’s must have item. “From previous client projects at ICON Printing we know that brands with a playful tone of voice can cause a bit of a stir with logo centric design, recognisable colour schemes and some savvy marketing to transform what is essentially very simple clothing items. If you’ve got the personality, you can create great merch to match.” Violent Merchandise — After the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins on the set of upcoming movie Rust, Donald Trump Jr released an inflammatory t-shirt that said “Guns don’t kill people, Alec Baldwin does.” Alex, added: “The messaging on these t-shirts is concerning, as are the comments from some of Don Jr’s defenders. It’s important that printers consider the impact and offence any design could cause to the public, especially around a sensitive subject such as the fatal shooting on set in America. “Whilst all designs can be subjective, even independent printers have a responsibility to ensure any designs and messaging are not likely to cause harm or promote violence. At ICON, we carefully review every design ahead of it being printed, and use our own expertise to determine the impact it could have.” www.iconprinting.com SOURCES: 1: The Gamer; 2: Dungeons & Dragons; 3: Liberty Games; 4 Burger video; 5 Squid Game Vans; 6: Netflix Merchandise; 7: The Drum; 8: Aldi Mania; 9: Aldi Trends

TREACLE FACTORY CHOOSES JOSERO SWEET TRIO Luton-based design, print, and digital marketing specialist Treacle Factory are experts in helping businesses get creative with their promotional print materials. When the time came to expand what they were able to produce in-house in terms of media and size options, they looked to Josero to help them take that next step forward and upgrade their existing Mimaki. Jeremy Brown, Director, Treacle Factory and the team opted for the Mimaki UCJV300-160 printer/cutter, an Easymount 1600 Laminator, and a BubbleFree Pro flatbed applicator table. These three products go hand in hand,” says Jeremy. “Mounting has been a challenge so we would generally outsource to people that would print direct to substrate, so it’s great to have the ability to print on the vinyl and mount the job ourselves. We’re also able to be more in control of the costs now that we’re producing more of the work in-house. The three pieces of equipment are already working together as a great trio!” Some of the funds for the new equipment investments were the result of various COVID-19 related government grants, and Jeremy explains that while they obtained quotes from a handful of suppliers, an existing relationship with Managing Director Sarah Winterbottom played a part in clinching the decision to work with Josero. Describing the service as ‘fantastic’, it appears that Treacle Factory made the right decision.
“The advice that they gave and the deal that they offered were fantastic,” says Jeremy. “On the day it came to be installed, it was quite a job – the team managed to get the BubbleFree table to go through our door, which was like a magic trick really! The process was excellent from start to finish.” The installations of the printer/cutter, the laminator and the applicator table are already yielding positive results for Treacle Factory. Jeremy explains: “The new kit is allowing us to produce a large amount of work that we were sending out every month and bring it in-house. We didn’t previously have the capability or tools to do the
work that we are now doing. At this moment I’m printing tables for a hotel, which we would never have done in-house before. We can probably bring in another 50 percent of the work that we would normally send out, which is really great.” Although a further equipment purchase isn’t currently on the horizon for Treacle Factory according to Jeremy, if and when the need arises, he knows who they will turn to first. “If we ever need to upgrade or if one of our machines becomes outdated, we will definitely be coming to Josero again,” Jeremy concludes. www.josero.com
RETHINKING DIGITAL TEXTILE PRODUCTION Phil McMullin, Pro Graphics Sales Manager, Epson (UK) Ltd says the pandemic forced brands and buyers to rethink the way they fundamentally operate. Long established norms no longer apply as e-commerce increasingly becomes the go to route to purchase. To adapt to the immediate change in the marketplace demanded innovative thinking and bold decision making. For some it provided them with the opportunity to accelerate plans already in motion. For others it was the driver to explore fresh ideas. Nike, Ralph Lauren, Vera Bradley and Shutterfly/Spoonflower are among the creative brands that have redefined their approach. They have investigated how they can utilise digital print technology to drive new business growth according to The Future of Digital Textile Printing to 2026, the latest market study from Smithers. With regular retail closed, these fashion brands invested in online businesses based on the flexibility digital inkjet printing allows. Amazon has also committed to supporting further diversification of its online business with a $400 million spend on digital textile equipment. It will be no surprise then that the Smithers’ research states demand for digitally printed textiles is rebounding strongly in 2021 and set for accelerated growth over the next five years. By 2022 the sector will have recovered all of the sales it lost in 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic. By 2026 digital textile printed volume will increase 13.9% CAGR to 5.531 million square meters from 2.89 billion square metres in 2021. This will encourage sales in dedicated inkjet textile presses to pass the €1 billion per year mark in 2026. These opportunities for diversification and growth are made possible by digital textile print technology that delivers: • Design creativity and customised fabrics, • Production responsiveness for short print runs,
30
• Order flexibility with e-commerce and quick reordering capabilities, • Sustainable manufacturing with print on demand and reshoring supply chains. The pandemic has accelerated interest in the opportunities of these capabilities and encouraged exploration of what the new generation of direct to fabric systems can deliver. Solutions such as the popular, versatile Epson SureColor F3000 that combines high levels of accuracy and a low total cost of ownership (TCO) for mid/large garment and t-shirt production companies and the fast, highvolume Epson SureColour F10000 dye sublimation printer. www.epson.co.uk.

BAD GRAMMAR
I wanted to marry an English teacher when she got out of jail. But you can’t end a sentence with a proposition.
GREEN FINGERS
I can’t tell the difference between a rose and a dandelion. So, when it came time to tidy up my garden, I had no clue which plants to keep and which ones to dig up. Until, that is, my mother gave me this handy tip: “Pull them all up. If it comes back, it’s a weed.”
BEST BID WINS
One day a man went to an auction. While there, he bid on a parrot. One day a man went to an auction. While there, he bid on a parrot. Sorry, that’s not the joke, just couldn’t resist. Anyway, he really wanted this bird, so he got caught up in the bidding. He kept on bidding but kept getting outbid, so he bid higher and higher and higher. Finally, after he bid way more than he intended, he won the bid — the parrot was his at last! As he was paying for the parrot, he said to the auctioneer, “I sure hope this parrot can talk. I would hate to have paid this much for it, only to find out that he can’t talk!” “Don’t worry,” said the auctioneer. “ Who do you think kept bidding against you?

RUDOLPH CHAT
One Christmas eve, Pete and Jane were driving their Russian friend Rudolph back to his house. The weather outside was frightful. Jane asked Pete, “Do you think that’s sleet or rain out there?” “It’s rain, Jane,” said Pete. “I think it’s sleet, Pete,” said Jane. Rudolph chimed in, “It’s definitely rain, Jane.” “No, I really think it’s sleet, Rudolph,” said Jane. “Don’t argue with the expert, Jane,” said Pete. “What do you mean, Pete?” asked Jane. Pete replied, “Rudolph the Red knows rain, Dear.”
LOOK LIKE MORE RAIN DEER…
What does Miley Cyrus have at Christmas? Twerky Why did no one bid for Rudolph and Blitzen on eBay? Because they were two deer Mary and Joseph — now they had a stable relationship. What does the Queen call her Christmas broadcast? The One Show. What did Santa do when he went speed dating? He pulled a cracker. Why don’t you ever see Santa in hospital?
