BexyBoo at No 10 Downing Street SPECIALISTS in business to business print solutions, Prontaprint Altrincham, were selected to help with a very special and interesting project for Cheshire based company, Bexy Boo, and the Chancellor, George Osborne. Award winning Bex Hassett of Bexy Boo was personally invited by Chancellor George Osborne to attend the Small Business Saturday UK event in London to represent Cheshire’s Tatton Constituency. The Treasury’s event held at the Internal Drum was organised to celebrate 100 small businesses encouraging the support of independent and local businesses. As a representative of the UK’s 5.4million small businesses, Bex was keen to make a good impression at her stand where she would later be joined and complimented by the Chancellor himself and national press. It was no surprise that she hired the team at Prontaprint Altrincham to produce two large A1 posters that would draw in the attention of passers-by and enhance the appeal of her stall. Bex Hassett comments: “As a creative company that produces bespoke, hand-finished greetings cards, it was important
our space for the day truly represented all that we stand for. Brian and the team did a great job in helping me get the look just right with large, bright and exceptional quality posters that I will be able to utilise at more events in the future.” True to their promise, Prontaprint Altrincham were trusted to deliver and helped show the Treasury’s Internal Drum the class and sophistication of the Northern Powerhouse. The
printing company were proud to support Bexy Boo with their quality printing services and were delighted to hear the event was a huge success for the company. Director, Brian Thornhill concludes: “Prontaprint Altrincham champion small independent businesses and so we were thrilled to be involved in this exciting project for Bex at Bexy Boo. Having our work travel across the country into the hands of the Chancellor and on national television was a surprising bonus. We thoroughly enjoyed working with Bex on this project and look forward to working with her again in the future.” www.prontaprint.com/Centre/Altrincham
Colourgraphic Arts Adds PUR from Morgana COLOURGRAPHIC Arts based in Bordon Hamoshire has equipped itself with a PUR binder and creasing device from Morgana Systems Ltd. The DigiBook 450 represents the top of the range PUR device provided by Morgana, whilst the AutoCreaser Pro 50 will speed up the production of short-run work at the company. Following a recent steady increase in higher pagination work the Hampshire litho and digital print producer had been placing an increasing amount of perfect binding with external suppliers. With a 1.5 hour drive to the nearest provider the process was beginning to have an impact on speed of turnaround for urgent jobs: “We have a focus on bringing as many processes in-house as we can, so it just made sense for us to make PUR our next investment,” said Vince Scardarella, Managing Director of Colourgraphic Arts. Commenting on the purchase process, Dronz Arigho, production manager at the company, said: “We were able to review the full Morgana range of PUR binders at the company’s Milton Keynes showroom, including the 200 and the 300, but our business focus is always on best quality and speed of service, so it made sense for us to go for the top of the range. The DigiBook 450 gives a production speed of up to 450 books per hour. This comes into its own when we are finishing the longer run litho printed work.” To further aid faster finishing, the company included a Morgana AutoCreaser Pro 50 in its order. Whilst the company continues to use cylinder press for its longer run cutting and creasing requirements, much of the shorter run work doesn’t warrant the set-up time needed on that machine. “Where we have a digitally
printed run of 50 sheets that needs creasing the AutoCreaser is the perfect solution – we can run the job in the time it would take the cylinder press to make-ready,” said Vince Scardarella. “We often work with thicker materials when producing high quality products – substrates such as 170gsm coated stock definitely need creasing before further finishing stages are carried out. A dedicated creaser is important to producing a top quality job.” With over seven years of digital print experience, the company currently uses two Canon ImagePress production machines, along with a five-colour Heidelberg Speemaster CD B2-format litho press. The company produce a wide range of commercial
colour print, including books, periodicals, promotional, and brochure work. Commenting on the order, Ray Hillhouse, Vice President Offline Business at Morgana Systems said: “We often focus on the advantages to the digital printer of the DigiBook range – fast makeready and the sealed glue tank, making them ideal for short run production – but the DigiBook 450 model is also ideal for those producing longer run work via litho. The guys from Colourgraphic were able to see the benefits of the additional automation offered by this top of the range model.” Full details of Morgana’s product line-up can be found at: www.morgana.co.uk

Photobox chooses new Epson Surecolor SC-S60600 PHOTOBOX has invested in five new-generation Epson SureColor SC-S60600 64-inch wideformat printers. The company has installed these alongside its existing fleet of 16 SureColor SC-S50600 printers in its UK factory to meet the ongoing growing demand for personalised photo canvases. PhotoBox is Europe’s leading B2C personalised photo based printing company which puts its considerable success down to inspiration supported by the right combination of product, service, marketing and innovative technology. Launched in 2000, today the PhotoBox Group encompasses seven brands – PhotoBox, Moonpig, Hofmann, PaperShaker, Sticky9, posterjack and PosterXXL – and employs about 1,000 people worldwide. Its five factories around the world turn digital photos into over 600 different personalised products - including photo canvases - for 30 million members across 20 countries. James Lawrence-Jones, Group Technical Innovation Director at PhotoBox, is responsible for product and production processes. “Since 2013 demand for photo canvases has grown by 70% year on year and we have expanded our production facilities to keep pace and deliver the very best quality and service to our customers,” says James. “We wanted an ink-efficient printer that would deliver great quality at higher speeds and with maximum reliability and the new SCS60600 ticks all the boxes. Our manufacturing challenges are unusual because we have to be able to print, finish and despatch a large number of canvases on a day, over 12,000 individual canvases a day 24/7 at Christmas for example, and we have to rely on the very best production equipment to meet our high quality standards and tight deadlines.” The new, robust SureColor SC-S60600 roll-to-roll printer has been designed to meet the needs of demanding production environments where maximum quality and reliability are key. It uses Epson PrecisionCore permanent printheads in a dual CMYK configuration to deliver outstanding
1440 x 1440 dpi resolution and speeds up to 95.3sqm/hr (single pass) and 52.3sqm/hr (typical banner applications). The sophisticated media feeding system incorporates highly-advanced autotension control and wide-diameter pressure rollers to optimise grip and feed accuracy. As a result, operators can load a 45kg roll of media and leave it to print unattended with the confidence that the end result will be perfect. Very quickly after installation of the new printers, James and his production team were experiencing the benefits. “The SC-S60600 delivers improved print quality at reduced pass rates and offers improved ink efficiency which, when combined with the almost 20% boost in print speeds, results in lower overall production costs,” he says. “The new automated maintenance feature is another benefit,” says James. “It maximises printer uptime and frees up our operators to focus on other tasks to keep the print room running at peak efficiency. Plus, the new improved media loading means accurate media set up is easier and quicker - which allows for long run, unattended printing with the confidence that quality will be consistent across all the images.” Canvas printing at PhotoBox is a highly streamlined operation. Customers have a choice of three canvas grades,17 different sizes up to 30 x 40 inch, and rectangular, square and panoramic formats. Images received online on any of the 18 localised websites are automatically nested prior to printing in full-roll batches on a SureColor printer. The rolls are then loaded onto an Esko Kongsberg cutting table, automatically cut to size and finished. The complete process – from order

receipt to despatch – typically takes less than 24 hours! “The SureColor printers are excellent and we work them hard around the clock producing stunning images for our customers. It’s a high stress environment and we need maximum production uptime so when we need it we have great support from Epson and Rockwell, Epson’s appointed service provider,” says James. Several staff members have also attended the Epson SureColor Academy to ensure they get the best from their printers. “Quality is key for production whatever the time of year so we train our production staff all year round to ensure we’re ‘match fit’ ahead of peak. Our operators have gained a better understanding and expertise in getting the very best results from the SureColors,” says James. www.group.photobox.com www.epson.co.uk

IIJ celebrates 10th anniversary INDUSTRIAL Inkjet Ltd (IIJ), the pioneering inkjet systems integrator and product developer, will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a special dinner and party for its employees. IIJ, which has had another record-breaking year with turnover 16% ahead of the 2014 total where sales had jumped 50% more than any previous year, is predicting another big business surge for its industrial inkjet business moving forward. John Corrall, Managing Director of IIJ, said: “Our growth over the 10 years has been steadily upwards, but now we’re predicting that certain markets – including packaging and security – are going to climb extremely quickly in the near future. “What we keep saying is that it’s ‘hockey stick’ time for inkjet in a lot of markets, which means a big upturn at the end. We’re ready to be surfing on that crest of a wave.” Mr Corrall paid tribute to his staff – now totalling 42 – and other business colleagues, who have helped IIJ become a major force within industrial inkjet printing. The company uses Konica Minolta inkjet print head technologies and provides bespoke systems for customers in numerous industries. Customers range from forward-thinking niche integrators and printers right up to global giants in sectors such as pharmaceutical, security printing, labels, packaging, confectionery, flooring and laminates.
IIJ was started in December 2005 when Akiyoshi Ohno, former President and now Senior Adviser, Konica Minolta Inkjet division, invited Mr Corrall to head up a European distribution business for its industrial inkjet heads. “Five minutes into a conversation at dinner Ohnosan asked me to run industrial inkjet sales and technical support in Europe,” said Mr Corrall. “I said I was going to set up a company anyway, so we shook hands. And it has just grown from there.” From providing expertise and parts for machines, in 2007 IIJ made a new label-making system that was launched by Konica Minolta at drupa in 2008.
After that show, it began making its own complete industrial inkjet systems. As a world renowned industrial inkjet specialist, IIJ is also the official sales and technical support centre for Konica Minolta Inc. products outside of Asia. It offers advice on any aspect of the use of inkjet technology in industrial applications. IIJ provides complete solutions for the successful design and implementation of Konica Minolta’s industrial printheads which are renowned for high print quality and reliability. www.industrialinkjetltd.co.uk
Delivery Wars 2016 INTERNATIONAL parcel broker ParcelHero says deliveries will be the new retail battle ground, with delivery choice as important as price for many consumers. Powering these delivery wars will be driverless vans, delivery drones… and the return of old-school pedal-power. • Driverless vans will deliver parcels in London • 2016 will see the UK’s first drone delivery • The traditional postie on a bicycle will be reappearing on Britain’s streets Your doorstep parcel collections and deliveries will be transformed over the coming year, says leading parcel broker ParcelHero. The company says deliveries will become the new retail battle front, with customer-friendly delivery options ranking as important as price for many consumers. New technology will increase customer choice of when and where your items are delivered, and you could even find your packages delivered by drone or driverless truck! ParcelHero’s Head of Customer Research, David Jinks MILT, says: ‘This year will see a transformation in the way we send and receive parcels and deliveries. We believe seemingly ‘sci-fi’ delivery methods are nearer than most people think. Driverless deliveries may sound like something out of I Robot, but in fact will be happening in London this year. Greenwich’s streets will soon see the eerie sight of driverless vans operating a predetermined route, moving parcels between either warehouses and shops or stores and homes.’ Continues David: ‘The vehicles will be autonomous, and may serve a large distribution centre and the O2 Arena. However, whilst control of the vans is entirely automatic, ParcelHero expects there will be a person in the van to ensure the operation runs smoothly and to take control in the case of an emergency.’ As well as driverless vehicles, drones could appear in UK skies far sooner than has been previously predicted. Aviation regulations are now holding back their introduction just as much, if not more, than technology issues;
and the UK Government has been quick to support Amazon’s trials. Last year Amazon approached the UK Government about developing drones in the UK to deliver items here; as it felt America’s Federal Aviation Authority rules had hindered their development. Transport Minister Robert Goodwill confirmed: ‘We’re working with Amazon, and Government is working on the whole issue of drones…We’re both keen to innovate’. Mr Goodwill added: ‘Amazon came to see me to ask about starting drone trials in the UK because regulations in the US were too restrictive, and in December 2015 Amazon boss Jeff Bezos revealed: ‘One of the regulatory agencies that’s moving fastest on this is the UK, so it’s possible that drone deliveries will start first in the UK.’ Observes David: ‘Perhaps the sky really is the limit for deliveries in 2016.’ Finally, alongside all these hi-tech innovations, we will also see the return of old fashioned pedal power for deliveries: Says David: ‘The Royal Mail controversially phased out posties bikes in 2014, and the famous red Pashley Mailstar cycle found itself recycle’d. Ironically, this ‘modernisation’ come at a time when the green delivery movement is growing; and cargo bikes will become increasingly popular with operators for last mile deliveries - particularly in cycle-friendly towns and cities such as Cambridge.’ The next generation cargo bikes can carry parcels as well as mail, and – thanks to a change in the law last year - heavier cargo bikes can now be fitted with electric assistance without being classified as motor vehicles. Concludes David: ‘ParcelHero, and its quality delivery partners UPS and DHL, also plan to be involved in many other technological developments: such as increased green urban deliveries using electric vehicles, and radical new approaches to click and collect. This will be the year technology delivers for parcel senders and internet retailers.’ Looking further into the future ParcelHero has made a number of other predictions – including supersonic deliveries for highly urgent valuable items. www.parcelhero.com

Linoprint enters the Zebrahouse
Hollywood Monster Star Wars
ZEBRAHOUSE Design and Print says “extra features” were the tempter for its purchase of a Linoprint CV digital press. “The fact it can handle heavier stocks, run a longer sheet size and apply white or clear toner (and you can easily change between the two in 15-20 minutes) was convincing,” says Dave Wheeldon, director. As a promotion of the new press it has produced sample books for print buyers and the response has been good with new clients not previously served bringing work to them. “We knew about the additional features when we bought the press but it is since installation that we have realised how flat the sheets are off the delivery and how good the registration is on this press. McLaren has been one of our customers for over 12 years and they, like all our customers, expect us to be in pole position when it comes to response times.” Zebrahouse handles a wide range of general commercial print. Dave Wheeldon was a designer originally so the company can handle design as needed and ensure supplied work is print ready. It also provides point of sale and promotional products. The company buys in litho print, meaning that 90% of its turnover is digital. It operates two Konica Minolta machines and the Heidelberg Linoprint CV is an additional press. The company recently moved from Farnborough to a beamed rural location in Fleet. All five staff have transferred to the 1,600 sq ft site and it is attracting visitors keen to view the new press. It is certainly seeing the value of the Linoprint technology less than a month into production. www.heidelberg.com
HOLLYWOOD Monster has created a stunning 15m x 4m wall graphic for Cineworld Birmingham Broad Street to help launch this year’s biggest film – Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The graphic was created on CMYUK’s Utack removable textile and printed in sections on a VUTEk H2000. Simon McKenzie, director at Hollywood Monster said: “Our Utack media was perfect for this installation, being easy to install as it sticks directly to the wall with no frame needed, and it will have no problem staying up for the average six weeks it will be needed for. “The graphics look absolutely stunning, thanks to the high resolution print and Ultradrop technology offered by the VUTEk H2000 combined with the water resistant surface of the Utack, which supports stunning colour definition that’s second to none. “The textile will also be easy to remove when the cinema needs to make a change as it comes off easily and leaves no residue to deal with.” CMYUK director Robin East added: “Star Wars is such as iconic film franchise, it’s great to have had even the tiniest part in the launch of this new episode. We hope it ‘awakens’ more customers to the benefits of Utack!” Utack repositionable textiles are available for waterbased, solvent, UV and latex printers and are easy to print, install and remove information, www.cmyuk.com/utack/ 01743 810000.

Designed for users wanting simple, accurate professional finishing, the Duplo 150Cr Booklet System is a lower volume option to the 350Cr Booklet System. The new system, which has 15 separate
programmes, can be used as a sheet feeder for pre-collated stock. Other benefits include “load and go” unattended operations and in-line slitting enabling three-knife trimming, which removes the need for a guillotine. Utilising the existing DC-445 DuCreaser and DBM150/T, this system offers creasing, slitting, folding and trimming in one pass. Both the DC-445 DuCreaser and DBM-150/T can be used independently and the system can be built retrospectively.
makers to reduce stock-holding of multiple films by choosing a single economical product. 3M Envision Print Film 48 and Overlaminate are available from William Smith ex-stock, as full, part or custom slit rolls and same day despatch is provided on full or part roll orders received up to 6.00pm. www.williamsmith.co.uk
Peter Jolly, Duplo UK Managing Director, said: “Faced with ever decreasing shorter run lengths, industry professionals will welcome the new multifunctional Duplo 150Cr Booklet System that enables users to provide a suitable range of full-bleed booklets to the specific needs of each customer.” www.duplouk.com
Graphics Works with Fujifilm Acuity LED 1600 UK graphics and display business Graphics Works has recently invested in three additional Fujifilm Acuity 1600 LED UV hybrid inkjet wide format printers. The investment follows the success of its first foray into the LED UV ink market in January 2015 with its first Acuity LED 1600 printer, which doubled its production speeds and cut production costs by 20 per cent. The Milton-Keynes based company, which specialises in producing and installing premium wallpaper coverings for high-end brands across a range of sectors, from hotels to the high street, invested in its first Acuity to create robust and visually appealing applications that didn’t require a time and cost-intensive post-press coating process. Such was the immediate impact of the first Acuity that Graphics Works invested in the two additional Acuity LED 1600 printers in July and another in October to further enhance its capacity and enable it to meet growing customer demand. The latest three printers will share the workload for all applications, such as wallpaper, large format graphics, promotional vinyl and window graphics, while the first Acuity will now focus on short-run carton packaging.
“Our core focus was to beef up our capacity to meet the demand and tight timescales we were facing on the back of a big uplift in work following our first Acuity investment,” explains Peter Barham, Director, Graphics Works. “Customers have been impressed by the output quality of Fujifilm’s LED UV technology and demand has dramatically increased as a result. “The Acuity LED 1600 is a very versatile printer, which opens up a lot of options to move into new applications in the future. We were also drawn to the white ink and varnish options that enable us to widen our creative parameters,” continues Barham. “In addition, we can print on the roll – which is vital for the majority of our products, as is the accuracy and consistency across a wide range of different materials.” Graphics Works invested in its first Acuity following a two-year consultation, once satisfied that UV ink had got to a point where it was capable of rivalling the quality of solvent, while also delivering a more durable product. “We had been watching developments in the UV LED ink market for many years, and felt it was the right time to invest,” says Barham. “We
ran stringent tests on a number of technologies and the Acuity stood out with its UV ink and LED curing capabilities, which ensure stable and consistent print, especially on delicate or difficult materials.” Barham is also quick to highlight the benefits of working with a partner such as Fujifilm: “Fujifilm’s support and service is excellent, and with multiple machines, they were also very willing to provide service training to allow us to manage most predictable maintenance issues in-house. This helps ensure maximum uptime, which is crucial for our continued business expansion.” www.fujifilm.eu/eu/products/graphic-systems/

Minion Yellow: Behind the Scenes RECENTLY, in an industry first, Pantone, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Partnerships and Licensing created an official new PANTONE Color, Minion Yellow, based on the Minions from Universal Pictures and Illumination’s Despicable Me global film franchise, including last summer’s blockbuster hit, Minions. The development of PANTONE Minion Yellow marks the first time in the global colour authority’s history that a colour has been created and named after a character. In a short interview, Laurie Pressman, VP of the Pantone Color Institute, provides more insight into the ground breaking partnership: Why did Pantone, Illumination and Universal come together to create Pantone Minion Yellow? “The Minions are a global phenomenon. The partnership of Pantone, Illumination and Universal has been a meeting of like-minded design focused entities, all of whom appreciate the Minions’ place in pop culture and wanted to come together to give these iconic characters their own iconic colour.”
Why was it important to Illumination and Universal that the Minions have their own unique shade? “Colour surrounds us and as the visual cue that defines our world, draws us in to feel a connection with our environment and the things we love,” said Pressman. Reinforcing the point, she continues, “Colour is a signifier and an identifier. It commands our attention and creates immediate associations. Developing a distinctive yellow shade that is
named specifically for the Minions, helps ensure that no matter where you are in the world, you will recognise the Minions just by their signature shade.” What was the inspiration for the new Pantone Minion Yellow? How would you define the new Pantone Minion Yellow colour? “Inspired by the Minions themselves, the team at the Pantone Color Institute worked closely with the animation team at Illumination Entertainment to identify the exact right yellow shade that could best express what the Minions are all about. Pantone Minion Yellow is a custom colour uniquely designed to represent these sweet and subversive characters. Illuminating, energetic, friendly and fun-loving, it is an extroverted, playful and warm yellow shade that sparkles with vitality. Its vibrancy captures the spirit of the Minions and conveys the true essence of these highly original characters.” For more insight into the Minions’ Pantone Journey, be sure to watch the Behind the Scenes video on the QPP website www. quickprintpro.co.uk or visit www.pantone.co.uk
Mimaki TS500P targets home furnishing and soft signage MIMAKI is to launch the TS500P-3200 super-wide format inkjet printer in February. This 3.2-m wide roll-to-roll sublimation inkjet printer is a dedicated transfer paper printer for the textile industry and is ideal for a broad range of applications including home furnishing textiles and indoor soft signage. Tailored for the growing close-to-home personalisation trend — Exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services Ltd, the company’s National Sales Manager – Textile & Apparel, Stephen Woodall says, “We’re seeing the trend for on-demand textile printing develop from the fashion and sportswear markets into the interior décor and home furnishing sector. The benefits of digital print enable companies to deliver variable content in varying run lengths with very short lead times; thus capitalising on the technology.” He continues, “Personalisation works best when coupled with short lead times for the consumer, so another key factor is having a print operation located geographically close to its market, thus bringing manufacturing back to the UK & Ireland.” Lean, mean and green — The super-wide format TS500P-3200 inkjet printer, ideal for transfer printing on furnishings and display graphics fabrics, features a new type of printhead to deliver high-speed printing at 180sq m/h. There are 12 printheads arrayed in three staggered lines that eject ink droplets at high speed to maintain the appropriate ink droplet angle and ensure accurate drop placement with a high head gap. This ensures highquality printing results on low-cost thin transfer papers. Mimaki’s Advanced Pass System 4 (MAPS4) anti-banding function smooths the swath boundaries with reduced numbers of droplets to provide even more beautiful printing. In addition, the newly designed Auto Media Feeder (AMF) allows stable transfer paper feeding at the high-speed setting in order to maintain print quality. In addition, the environmentally friendly output does not emit volatile organic compounds after printing and when considering large expanses of display graphics or retail PoS, it helps reduce CO2 emissions during transportation because it is lightweight and foldable. Performance technologies support market innovation – The TS500P-3200 delivers a number of production benefits. Its 3.2m super-wide printable width is practical for sublimation transfer printing on extra-wide fabrics for
curtains, bed linen, and other home furnishings and with printing speeds of 180sq m/h is highly productive too. A new printhead and feeding mechanism ensure high speed and quality printing on 3.2m wide media, which thanks to its AMF is capable of feeding media up to this width and 130kg in weight. Mimaki’s cockling-reduction transfer mechanism supports high-speed production on wide papers and the high performance TxLink3 Lite RIP software allows users to specify the ink volume per colour, and produce large seamless patterns from a single image (including repeat and mirror patterns). Uninterrupted printing is aided by the Nozzle Check Unit (NCU) that automatically detects and cleans clogged nozzles while the Nozzle Recovery System (NRS) uses only good nozzles as substitutes, when the clogged nozzles are not recovered after cleaning. Large ink containers in the external ink supply unit support continuous printing. Woodall remarks, “The TS500P-3200 should make a real impact in these markets, thanks to its combination of high tech performance and innovative features. As Mimaki’s dye sublimation and textile printing line-up continues to expand apace, we’re seeing machines that offer solutions for every aspect of the sector.” Dream big and wide — The interior decoration market is undoubtedly a growing one, as Woodall concludes: “The increase in demand for bespoke and short run interior textiles – be it for furnishings, décor or display graphics – is showing no sign of abating. Mimaki is focused on meeting the requirements of this market and this printer provides the capability to deliver to an increasingly wide variety of needs.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

Duplo’s Northern Lights
Having considered its first Northern Lights event at The Lowry in Salford in 2015 an unqualified success, Duplo is set to reprise the show on March 8-9 2016, this time at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds.
A
LMOST 200 ATTENDEES, a quarter of a million pounds’ worth in contracts secured, a long pipeline of prospects, and several new industry connections made – not surprisingly, Duplo was pleased with the results of its first ‘Northern Lights’ event last year. At the time, Duplo UK Marketing Manager Sarah Crumpler said the event had been “everything and more that we envisaged” and pledged to return to the North in 2016. And so it will come to pass that the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds will play host to the second running of Northern Lights in March 2016. Duplo has a track record of creating events that it hones through continuous dialogue with its customers into major showcase occasions in the print industry calendar, and Northern Lights looks set to follow that trend. A specially constituted customer focus group has advised Duplo on what customers want to get from the show, and Duplo is following the advice. There will be technology: the latest breakthrough print finishing technology from Duplo, including the soon to be launched 600 Pro Digital Booklet System, and the flagship DC-746 multifinisher and 600i Booklet System that were shown for the first time in London last year, alongside cutting-edge systems and solutions from the Northern Lights partners. Those companies so far confirmed to be taking part in Northern Lights are: • Paper merchant Antalis • The BPIF and Proskills PrintIT! • Post-press equipment distributor Friedheim International • Web to print software vendor Infigo Software • Punching and binding systems provider Renz; and • Vivid Laminating Technologies, manufacturer of Matrix Pneumatic Laminators There will be opportunities for visitors to network and share best practice, get hands-on guidance with the latest technologies, learn how to get the most from their investments, and gain new ideas for their businesses. Formal activities include a Duplo Owners Club meeting at 2pm on Tuesday 8th March, which last year discussed cutting technology, as well as operator workshops and a site visit to a local printer. Duplo UK Managing Director Peter Jolly commented: “Our second event in the North is designed to show how customers can create added value and increased revenue through the latest applications and innovations. With our partners we will show how reliable next-
generation products, service and support create integrated solutions and a sustainable future for customers.” With its focus on intelligent technology, one shared by all of the event partners, Northern Lights provides the perfect setting to talk to experts, watch live demonstrations, and gain ideas and inspiration to create new revenue streams and grow your business. On display will be a wide range of new products and solutions that have the potential to deliver huge growth opportunities to Duplo’s customers. Situated at Leeds Dock on the River Aire, close to the centre of the West Yorkshire city, the purpose-built Royal Armouries Museum is one of three National Museums of Arms and Armour in England, the other two being The Tower of London and Fort Nelson, overlooking Portsmouth in Hampshire. It houses a collection of more than 8,500 objects in six themed galleries: War, Tournament, Oriental, Self-Defence, Hunting and Peace. The museum includes an outdoor Arena and Tiltyard where live jousting shows and other exhibitions of military and sporting skill at arms take place. The first day of Northern Lights will have extended opening hours, closing at 7pm with refreshments served from 4pm to provide a more relaxed networking environment. Doors open on both days at 10am, with the event closing at 5pm
on the Wednesday 9 March. Sarah Crumpler, Duplo UK Marketing Manager, said: “Last year we set the bar high with the success of the first Northern Lights show, and we said we would return with another show in the north this year. We’re therefore delighted to announce the first details of Northern Lights 2016, featuring ground-breaking technology and solutions from Duplo and our partners, hands-on workshops, and great networking opportunities, all delivered at another iconic location. “We always seek out the opinions of customers when planning any event, and Northern Lights 2016 is no different, with our customer focus group, which met in January, shaping many of the event’s features.” She added: “We’re confident that the event will be the perfect showcase for the reliability, flexibility and automated precision that Duplo technology is renowned for.” Register your free place here: www.duplonorthernlights.com

CCORDING TO A recent survey, Sign &Digital UK 2015 performed above the industry benchmark for visitor satisfaction, with 85% of visitors describing their overall experience as good or excellent – outperforming the industry benchmark of 79%. Customer satisfaction has also increased by 6% since 2014. Sign & Digital UK has nearly 30 years of history supporting and reflecting the sign making, display solutions and digital printing industries through its annual exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham. During this time, these fast moving industries have seen huge changes in technology, working practices and in their business models, but Sign & Digital UK has always offered a unique and relevant marketplace in which buyers and sellers can do business. Rudi Blackett, event director for Sign & Digital UK, said: “We have worked hard to build the show as a trusted brand and we communicate closely with our exhibitors to ensure that they have the information required to make informed choices. This is done in two ways – the first being feedback from customer surveys, and the second being an independent audit of visitor attendance. For suppliers, an exhibition is only as good as the visitors that attend. “The audit which is conducted in accordance with the Association of Event Organisers’ (AEO) “rules for calculation of statistics for AEO member events” gives us a really clear picture of not only the number of visitors to the show, but also the type of visitor that attends. Face-to-face meetings at exhibitions are, despite the rise in online and social media, still one of the most effective ways to attract new business and to consolidate relationships with existing customers. Having independently confirmed visitor numbers and demographics to give to exhibitors is extremely reassuring and allows them to make an informed decision.” Francis Stones from the BPA added: “Sign & Digital UK’s annual BPA event audit proves they connect the right buyers with the right sellers within the right context. It verifies both the size of the audience and who the audience is. The audit is the UK industry standard, and is there to help organisers establish credibility, build loyalty and create higher-level relationships with their exhibitors. The verified data gives confidence to any sponsor and exhibitor that their marketing and communications spend is going to the right place.” Following the 2015 hugely successful show, Sign & Digital UK has launched its new look website for the 2016 edition. With new colours and branding to reflect the innovative and forward thinking
nature of the show, the website offers the perfect shop window for the show which has been running for nearly 30 years. Following a detailed brief from the Sign & Digital UK team, the design was produced by Eastbourne based design agency Ingenious Design Ltd. Commenting on the new creative, Sharon O’Shea, Director of Ingenious Design said: “We wanted to show the flexibility and growth of the exhibition. The colour paths show the different directions and media the show covers in a creative and dynamic way. The paths indicate flexibility, expansion and direction whilst being playful and innovative.” Marketing Manager for Sign & Digital UK, Jane Lewis replied that: “As the premier event for the sign making, display solutions and digital printing communities, Sign & Digital UK is where the industry meets to see and buy the latest products and services and to make new business connections. Our 2016 marketing campaign is a reflection of not only a vibrant and successful show but it also highlights the diversity and breadth of the suppliers who exhibit at the show. With the current floor plan almost full, the 2016 show is currently on track to grow once again more than 70 exhibitors are already confirmed. The Sign & Digital UK team are looking forward to building on a strong history of growth and delivery for our exhibitors and visitors.”
NEW SHOW FEATURES FOR 2016 A schedule of live product demonstrations and an online meeting booking facility are set to improve the visitor and exhibitor experience, and will be available to pre-registered visitors in the run up to the show. The new schedule of live product demonstrations taking place throughout the show will help visitors
make the most out of their experience. Exhibitor demos will allow visitors to see equipment in action, and learn from industry experts. Demos from some leading suppliers have been confirmed so far, with full schedule details to be announced in the new year. The 2016 show will also see the launch of an online meeting booking facility, where visitors will be able to schedule appointments with exhibitors throughout the duration of the show. Details and timings of all new show features will be available to view and schedule as part of the visitor registration process online. This means that visitors can fully plan ahead for their time at the show, and ensure they get the most from it, seeing the exhibitors and products they want to. Rudi Blackett, event director for Sign & Digital UK, said: “We really wanted to create a thoughtful and tailored experience for both visitors and exhibitors – a place where they can do business, see products in action and learn tips from the industry’s experts. “Enabling visitors to schedule appointments and product demos in the weeks leading up to the show means that they can get exactly what they want from it - they can be proactive and organise their time at the show effectively. The show is currently tracking 21% ahead on stand bookings compared to the last show, so we’re really excited for 2016.” Sign & Digital UK 2016 takes place at the NEC, Birmingham on 19-21 April and is free to attend for trade visitors. A Formula for Success
Regular readers will probably have guessed that Martin Christie has as much petrol in his DNA as printers ink, so when Epson asked if he would like to visit the Mercedes Formula One factory in Northamptonshire it was a matter of skid marks on the mousemat…
O
BVIOUSLY MY MAIN interest was the launch of the new SureColor printer models, but the lure of lunch courtesy of F1’s famously five star catering, and a little look around the normally secretive factory floor at Brackley was just the bonus. Epson is just one of a dozen sponsors contributing to putting Lewis Hamilton on track, and these days it is more than just an injection of cash for a bit of sticker space on the rear wing. With Hi-tech industry partners there is always another agenda sharing knowledge, and developing precision items in what is the cutting edge of engineering. With its expertise in a wide range of products from optics to robotics, it’s inevitable that Epson brings more to the team than an unlimited supply of desktop printers, though exactly what, may stay behind closed doors for the time being at least. It might be 3D printing, something that Epson would be uniquely qualified to get involved in, and which is already being used in some part of the F1 process. Mercedes F1 manufacture every part of the car at the Brackley factory, apart from the wheel rims and tyres,
and the Mercedes engine which is built at another factory just up the road. So the need for the highest standard of engineering is a priority. The precision in the production of parts, the fine tolerances involved and the continual testing of every minute component, is quite literally breathtaking. At the moment the two main components are carbon fibre, which is bonded in layers to make incredibly strong but light chassis and bodywork, and lightweight aluminium which is still drilled and milled to form intricate structures for almost everything else. In the future 3D printing may well replace some of the ‘traditional’ methods of production, but you can be sure it will be thoroughly tested to be sure it meets the exacting standards of the world’s toughest motorsport formula. One of the fascinating insights was into the continued and relentless development, involving the closest scrutiny of almost every part of the racing car. And in that there is a continuous dialogue between those involved in design, production and construction — but not without conflicting demands.
The designers want it smaller, lighter and more aerodynamic, the constructors want it stronger and so on. The drivers just want it faster! Over seven hundred people work at Brackley, and whereas years ago most of the staff of a race team would be wielding spanners, most now spend their working days staring into a computer screen — something we have got used to in the present day print shop! And in the same way the thorough preparation of a job, anticipating problems and solving possible issues, speeds the process before it hits the factory floor. We may have a disgruntled customer if a job is late or done badly, they could lose a race and face the wrath of a highly stressed driver. Don’t believe all of the PR speak of ‘we win together we lose together’ in front of the TV cameras, in the de-briefing room there will be tantrums! You don’t win world championships by being a nice guy all the time. One of the most staggering views of the guided tour was the race control operations room from where the live Grand Prix is monitored from wherever in the world, and whatever time of day it is taking place. There you realise the full scope of the back-up available, and required to run a top flight race team in present day Formula One. Banks and banks of computers are receiving telemetry data from each of over seven hundred sensors placed in strategic places in each of two cars. Even though it was out of season, the room was still fully manned and busy running a simulation of the last Grand Prix in Abu Dabhi, going through events and procedure just one more time to see if things could have been done differently. In particular the two long desks seating the race engineers for Lewis and Nico Rosberg, rolling the dice to see if this time they could help the other one win. The fine margins between winning and losing, and the importance
of collaboration with IT partners is illustrated by one of the other sponsors, Qualcom, who developed a data transfer system that enabled the vast amount of telemetry to be transmitted from the car as soon as it enters the pit lane and crawls to a stop, rather than waiting for it to reach the garage. Gaining a second here could make the difference between pole position and second or third. You don’t have to be a petrol head to appreciate all of this because the professional approach, and best practise should be a part of any team in a modern industry, digital printing included. It’s just the scale, and speed of everything in formula one that sets it apart. But for all of that technology, the massive resource of information, it still needs the sharp wits of a human being on the pit wall or in the driving seat to weigh up all of that often conflicting, and potentially confusing data and make the right call — and in a split second. That’s why they can still make mistakes, but also why they can never let the computers completely control the shots. Of course there were a couple of other sleek, finely honed machines on show at Brackley, as well as the Formula One cars. The full spec of Epson’s new models is featured at length elsewhere in this issue, but as a user, it was some of the smaller details, rather than the grand designs that were of interest. All large format inkjet printers rely on the print head, driven precisely by an electric motor, moving quickly back and forth over the media. This is its most vulnerable part, and most likely prone to failure, particularly if it encounters something unexpected during its travel. It may jam all on its own, or pick up debris or dust that has fallen into the print area, or it may just snag on the media. At the very least this will cause a failure in operation needing a complete reset, at worse damage to the head, or even an electrical surge
FEBRUARY 2016 | QUICK PRINT PRO | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23
back via the motor that will fry the main board. The head doesn’t know it’s going to encounter a problem so it just ploughs ahead until it finds it. It still needs a keen eyed human being to look after its best interests and prevent more serious consequences. As any large format operator will tell you, they only go wrong when you walk away from them. Epson haven’t installed any F1 style sensors to monitor for faults, but they have made a very simple guard that works a bit like a snow plough, pushing aside debris or smoothing the other bugbears or inkjet blocked heads caused by excessive ink deposits. The conflicting demands of making the printer work faster, and yet push even more volume of inks through the heads, has made blockages a common issue. I have no doubt we will see these development parts introduced on their future pigment ink printers. Epson has carefully studied the competitors, and specifically designed and engineered the new SureColor range to tackle the common issues with large solvent printers. The nature of the inks means that often routine maintenance is a daily chore, and the variety of media — with different thicknesses and textures — makes for sometimes complicated setting changes. Epson has addressed this in the running gear so that average maintenance is now monthly rather than even weekly, and the software can log all the necessary print settings of a particular job for future use. Epson realise that the average user doesn’t have a fully trained pit crew ready to service the machine at a moment’s notice, but still expects it to be running up to speed when the call comes.
vivid-online.com
Like a lot of engines, inkjets thrive on regular long runs. They don’t like a lot of stop start and a long time lingering in the back of the garage unused. Though the environments may be very different, there are always similarities when the ultimate goal is to improve performance and reliability. One of those customers likely to be most demanding is Photobox. Given the volume and turn round times, it’s a fairly good recommendation that they have chosen to use the SureColors as their print engines of choice. Anyone who does large format printing whether
posters or fine art, will know that wastage caused by printer problems or post print finishing errors, eats massively into profit. It’s tricky enough with a solo manual operation, but when a process is largely automated, as with the mounting of frames and stretching of canvas, faults may not be spotted before the item is packaged and despatched. The durability of the solvent inks, as well as the improved quality of colour in the resulting image, means there is less chance of accidental damage in handling, and the reliability factor means less chance of head failure in mid-operation. Particularly canvas, where the printed media is stretched over a stiff wooden frame, heavy colour pigment inks can crack or can be scratched by tools or even sharp fingernails. Traditional varnish is an effective cure for this, but is slow and time consuming. Using the more flexible solvents means Photobox can use machines to do the stretching and stapling so they can race through the operation and get the much wanted gift off to its recipient in record time. As a little footnote to our adventure at Brackley, news came in as we went to press, that down at Grove, near Didcot, one of Mercedes rivals on the grid, Williams, was installing more 3D printing equipment from EOS, a Swedish manufacturer. They already have two of the polymer additive devices and now have a bigger 76x58cm one for making modular plastic parts. But as the materials that can be used and bonded together successfully in 3D printers expands it can’t be long before they are making bigger things, and becoming common place of the factory floor.

THE Premier Paper Group, the UK’s independent paper merchant with a nationwide network of regional stock holding branches, held another mega day of tree planting action, where customers and staff joined forces to plant some 2,500 trees at a site in rural Hertfordshire. The tree planting day of action was held on the 19th November at the Woodland Trust-owned Heartwood Forest in Hertfordshire, and the native tree species that were planted included; hawthorn, small leaved lime, alder, grey sallow, common oak, downy birch, silver birch, wild cherry, dog rose, blackthorn, aspen, field maple, crab apple, rowan and hornbeam amongst others. This latest tree planting feat followed a hugely successful day of action at the same location last year, which is set to become the UK’s largest continuous new native woodland. The trees were planted by both customers and the Premier Paper Group staff, who had assembled from all over the country and who persevered, despite the cold and rain to gather at the Heartwood Forest in the early hours of the morning. In total this year, customers who have participated in Premier’s Carbon

Capture scheme have helped to plant over 55,000 trees through the Woodland Trust. Speaking about the success of this latest tree planting day at Heartwood Forest, David Jones, Premier Paper Group Marketing Director, stated, “A big thank you to everyone who attended the tree planting day, it was good to see the Carbon Capture programme in action. We managed to exceed the expectations of the Woodland Trust by planting 2,500 trees during the day. So far this year customers who have engaged in the programme have helped to plant over 55,000 trees, capturing 11,000 tonnes of CO2 – an incredible achievement!” The Premier Paper Group recognises that planting trees helps soak up unwanted carbon dioxide which pollutes the atmosphere, a process known as Carbon Capture.
HEARTWOOD FOREST Heartwood Forest, located near Sandbridge, just north of St Albans in Hertfordshire, is an 858 acre site and is the largest of The Woodland Trust’s woods in England and also the largest continuous new native woodland in the country. The site contains some 44 acres of precious ancient woodland, our equivalent of the rainforest, which sadly now makes up just 2% of UK land cover, and dates back to at least 1600AD as well as containing newly planted woodland. The site is seeking to become the largest new continuous native forest in England.

CARBON CAPTURE Premier Paper is offering its customers the opportunity to capture the CO2 emissions from their paper purchases by planting and conserving native woodland right here in the UK. As a corporate partner of the Woodland Trust, Premier Paper signed up to its UK Woodland Carbon Code. This programme sets a new standard for Carbon Capture, removing it from the atmosphere through the creation of native woodland across the country. The Carbon Capture programme is just one of the initiatives provided to customers, with Premier Paper offering its print customers and end users the opportunity to capture the CO2 emissions from their paper purchases, by planting and conserving native woodland right here in the UK. As a corporate partner of the Woodland Trust, Premier Paper signed up to its UK Woodland Carbon Code. This programme sets a new standard for Carbon Capture, removing it from the atmosphere through the creation of native woodland across the country. The scheme operates under the Government’s Woodland Carbon Code, a voluntary standard for woodland creation projects in the UK. The independent certification to this standard provides assurance and clarity about the carbon benefits of these sustainably managed woodlands. It is calculated that 25m² of native UK woodland will capture and store one tonne of CO2 and creating large areas of new native woodland, will, over time, remove hundreds of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. www.paper.co.uk/environment/carbon-capture/

Opportunities with Xerox Premium Nevertear BASED in Bridgwater, Somerset, Media Edge is a thriving digital print management, professional art studio and web creation services business that is fronted by husband and wife team Jim and Jayne Murray. Jayne heads up the art and design creation element of the business, while Jim oversees the production of finalised artwork and website creation. The company has continued to evolve thanks to the entrepreneurial vision of Jim, who together with the latest innovative substrates from Antalis, has been able to create new opportunities to drive the business forward. “We noticed around four to five years ago that the print market was turning more and more towards digital work. But we didn’t want to be a company that just churned out the same old type of work as everyone else. We wanted to differentiate ourselves and tap into new areas, so we needed something with a ‘wow’ factor that would fit our size, and provide us with opportunities to gain ground in new market sectors, giving us a competitive edge,” says Jim. Knowing Jim was always on the lookout for something different, Mark Evans, Key Account Manager for Document Supplies at Antalis introduced him to Xerox Premium Nevertear, a highly developed, durable and printable bright white polyester substrate with a smooth, matt surface. In addition to its water, grease and tear resistance, it also requires no lamination. Quick to see its potential in the travel industry, Jim and his team designed a series of prototype luggage labels that would offer the opportunity for personalisation and brand promotion, while being capable of withstanding the rough and tumble of a long haul trip. “We pitched the luggage tags to a number of
local travel agents, and it wasn’t long before we began supplying some of the local businesses. We also started to design bespoke, personalised labels that were colour coded to match the type of holiday the customer had booked. Two years on, we’re still supplying them and have just received our latest repeat order for a further 2,000 more luggage tags.” Following the success of the luggage tags for the travel sector, Jim started to explore other new avenues that would benefit from the durable and resistant nature of NeverTear. Being a keen golfer, Jim saw another opening for NeverTear, in the form of golf bag labels for ‘guest golfers’ playing a round of golf at other clubs. “When you pay as a guest to play some of the top courses as a visiting non-member, it can be pretty expensive, and all you get to show for your round is a paper tag that often ends up torn and damaged. It’s quite prestigious to demonstrate you have played different courses, so having something that will last to attach to your golf bag adds to the value of the round and memory of your day.” NeverTear presented the perfect substrate yet again for Jim to introduce visitor golf tags, to his local golf clubs, and despite the increased cost per
luggage tag, the clubs could see a return on their investment through the ongoing publicity they were getting as the golfers kept the tags attached to their bags. Media Edge has also begun to use NeverTear in other applications where durability and resistance is of paramount importance such as pre-creased pub and café menus, where they can produce shorter and more economical runs on the digital press. Inevitably, there were a few initial teething problems with the feeding of such a different substrate through Media Edge’s original entry-level digital press. But Mark was soon on hand to offer some advice to address the problem. Since the early days, Jim has also invested in a larger Xerox C70 digital press that handles the substrate with ease and has enabled Jim to offer more creative print services. “We started our business during the recession, which many thought was a huge mistake, but with some forward thinking and the support of Mark at Antalis, we have been able to carve out a unique selling point that has set us apart from competitors, and allowed us to move the business forward.” “It’s the detailed know-how of Mark and his understanding of what we are trying to achieve that really sets Antalis apart from other suppliers,” says Jim. “For us, the answer from Antalis is always yes – no matter how small the job or short the run, no minimum order necessary. We’re a very bespoke, design oriented company, and Antalis has helped us achieve our USPs with products that get the job done. We’re always thinking of new ways to improve our customer offering at Media Edge, and we know that all we have to do if we need any extra help is ‘Ask Antalis’.” www.antalis.co.uk
Mimaki helps Lustalux meet demand AS part of its ongoing expansion plans and in response to increased demand for wide format print, Preston-based Lustalux has recently added a Mimaki CJV300-160 printer/cutter to its machine line-up. Coupled with the recent enlargement of its business premises, the window film and commercial graphics company has also taken on new staff to ensure its service offering remains high for clients new and old. “The business has gone from strength to strength throughout 2015,” says Richard Lancaster, Director of Lustalux. “Due to an increase in client wins, we were struggling to keep up with the surge in demand for printed graphics, murals and wallpaper. By investing in the new Mimaki CJV300 wide format printer, we’ve excelled our service offering which means we can continue developing towards becoming a leading UK provider of graphics and signage.” Purchased through authorised Mimaki reseller, Granthams; the CJV300 sits at the head of Mimaki’s integrated printer/cutter range and is capable
of delivering high quality outdoor durable print at speeds of over 100sq metres/hour onto vinyl, banner, canvas, paper and other substrates. With a print width of 1.6m and running Mimaki’s SS21 low solvent inks, Lustalux is utilising the CJV300’s high quality of output to expand its portfolio. “The new Mimaki has replaced our previous eco-solvent printer/cutter and was chosen because it offered us a higher standard of quality and detail,” cites Lancaster. “It came highly recommended to us, although we already recognised Mimaki as the market leader.” Doubling the company’s office space has afforded Lustalux the opportunity to deliver new products for its blue-chip client base, as it serves both trade print and direct accounts. “We work closely with the education sector, but also supply graphics to some household brand names,” Lancaster states. “We’re now perfectly placed to be able to offer not only our core window and wall graphics but also new products such as vehicle liveries and event branding.”
New appointments match Lustalux’s increase in premises and print capacity, with staff added in a number of hands-on roles in the studio and print room and Lancaster summarises his satisfaction about the company’s expansion, “It’s extremely rewarding to see how far the company has come since it was formed over 24 years ago and to have such a high calibre of skills in-house.” www.lustalux.co.uk, telephone: 01772 978979.

SixTeeSix expands t-shirt printing with Epson SIXTEESIX has invested in an Epson SureColor SC-F2000 direct-to-garment printer to expand its service offering to print t-shirts while you wait, which has led to a significant increase in production and profits. The Hampshire-based t-shirt printing company has been offering bespoke garment design and printing services since 1999. Owner Mark Rhone originally ran the online t-shirt printing business from home and opened the retail premises in January 2015, in order to have a more visible presence and to offer his customers a more personalised experience. The opening of the new shop was the perfect timing for Mark to put his plans to print directto-garment into action. Mark says, “I had been looking at direct-to-garment printing for around three years and could see the benefits to my customers and my business. I evaluated several printers during that time and decided on the Epson SureColor SC-F2000 direct-to-garment printer, which is fairly new to the market. I’ve worked with Epson printers before and they have a great reputation for good quality and reliability, plus I really like the fact that the whole system – from chassis to printhead to ink - is designed and built entirely by Epson.” The SureColor SC-F2000 sits alongside a Schulze Pre-Treatment machine, Graphtec CE-6000-40 cutting plotter and two Stahls heat presses. Epson reseller Adelco supplied and installed the SureColor SC-F2000 in March 2015. “Adelco are fantastic and have been really helpful before, during and after the sale and installation,” says Mark. “The printer was very straightforward to install and set up and couldn’t be easier to use.” Mark is delighted with his new Epson printer and has printed over 6,000 garments since installation. “I’ve had absolutely no problems with the SureColor printer and can happily print one-offs or multiple orders – I’ve recently fulfilled an order for 100 hoodies for local school leavers and the quality was outstanding. My retail customers like it too as they can bring in their own design or photo and have their t-shirt printed while they wait.”
He also prints his own branded cotton tote bags on the SC-F2000, which he uses instead of carrier bags – re-useable and more eco-friendly than plastic bags with the added benefit of free advertising for his business. Mark is keen to offer his customers a memorable retail experience and has plans to hold ‘Print Parties’ on the premises – an opportunity for his customers to create and bring their own designs which they can have printed onto their own customised t-shirt. Mark says: “The SureColor SCF2000 has enabled me to expand my business in a number of very creative ways. Without the Epson printer I wouldn’t have the business I have today.” The Epson SureColor SC-F2000 direct-to-garment printer offers high performance, low maintenance and running costs and enables small-to-medium businesses like SixTeeSix to offer a high quality t-shirt design and print service that is fast and cost-effective. Garment Creator software by Epson comes as standard with the SureColor SC-F2000 and enables designers to unleash their creativity and easily produce customised, eye-catching designs on a range of items such as t-shirts, caps and bags up to 25mm thick. Garment Creator also includes a cost calculation function, a useful tool which

Featuring Epson’s durable new TFP printhead the SureColor SC-F2000 offers a resolution of 1440 x 1440 dpi for accurate dot shape and placement and its wide colour gamut produces vibrant colours, sharp contours and smooth gradations. The printer uses Epson’s UltraChrome DG inks which are the perfect solution for garment applications as they are hard wearing, crack resistant yet feel soft against the skin. Production is quick without sacrificing print quality: the SureColor SC-F2000 is capable of printing a single white t-shirt in 27 seconds when using dual colour mode, and a dark coloured t-shirt in less than two minutes, using white ink as a base colour. Luke Smith, Sales, Adelco, says: “The Epson SureColor SC-F2000 delivers on performance, cost and reliability, it also opens up new revenue streams for customers. GET IN Last year, on Valentine’s Day, my fiancée of five years bought me a lottery ticket and I won £6.2 million. I wonder what she’s doing nowadays.
MY TURN TO COOK I’m treating my wife to a romantic dinner for Valentine’s Day. Soft, slow cooked pasta. The finest petits pois. Finely diced, soft soya flakes. A beautiful chicken stock marinade. Finely seasoned with fresh basil and mixed herbs. Then I just tip in water to the fill line, add the soy sauce sachet and I’m done.
PARENTAL GUIDANCE One day teacher asked Sam if his father helped him with his homework. Sam simply said, “No, he did it all by himself!”
SEX IS SO CONFUSING A: Just look at that young person with the short hair and blue jeans. Is it a boy or a girl? B: It’s a girl. She’s my daughter. A: Oh, I’m sorry, Sir. I didn’t know that you were her father. B: I’m not. I’m her MOTHER.
SPORTY MODEL ‘How was your blind date?’ a college student asked her roommate. ‘Terrible!’ the roommate answered. ‘He showed up his 1932 Rolls Royce.’ Wow! That’s a very expensive car. What’s so bad about that?’ ‘He was the original owner.’
LATE FOR WORK! I woke up suddenly terrified, I’m late for work! I opened my eyes and chilled... I’m at work.
PLAYING AROUND Wife to husband: ‘What’s your excuse for coming home at this time of the night?’ Husband to wife: ‘Golfing with friends, my dear.’ Wife to husband: ‘What? At 2 a.m?!’ Husband to wife: ‘Yes, We used night clubs.’
HELP A man jumps from a plane and as he descends pulls his parachute only nothing happens so he pulls his reserve and still no luck so as he contemplates flapping his arms like a bird when he spies a man coming up towards him. Calling out to the man “DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT PARACHUTES?” The other man replies “NO! DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT GAS COOKERS?”
TEMPER TEMPER A woman goes to the Doctor, worried about her husband’s temper. The Doctor asks: “What’s the problem?” The woman says: “Doctor, I don’t know what to do. Every day my husband seems to lose his temper for no reason. It scares me.” The Doctor says: “I have a cure for that. When it seems that your husband is getting angry, just take a glass of water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don’t swallow it until he either leaves the room or calms down.” Two weeks later the woman comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn. The woman says: “Doctor that was a brilliant idea! Every time my husband started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished, and he calmed right down! How does a glass of water do that?” The Doctor says: “The water itself does nothing. It’s keeping your mouth shut that does the trick.”
TAKE A DEEP BREATH… A duck walks into a pub and orders a pint of beer and a ham sandwich. The bartender looks at him and says, “Hang on! You’re a duck.” “I see your eyes are working,” replies the duck. “And you can talk!” exclaims the bartender. “I see your ears are working, too,” says the duck. “Now if you don’t mind, can I have my beer and my sandwich please?” “Certainly, sorry about that” says the bartender as he pours the duck a pint. “It’s just we don’t get many ducks in this pub. What are you doing around this way?” “I’m working on the building site across the road,” explains the duck. “I’m a plasterer.” The flabbergasted bartender cannot believe the duck and wants to learn more, but takes the hint when the duck pulls out a newspaper from his bag and proceeds to read it. So, the duck reads his paper, drinks

his beer, eats his sandwich, bids the barman good day and leaves. The same thing happens for two weeks. Then one day the circus comes to town. The ringmaster comes into the pub for a pint and the bartender says to him: “You’re with the circus, aren’t you? Well, I know this duck that could be just brilliant in your circus. He talks, drinks beer, eats sandwiches, reads the newspaper and everything!” “Sounds marvelous,” says the ringmaster, handing over his business card. “Get him to give me a call.” So the next day when the duck comes into the pub the bartender says, “Hey Mr. Duck, I reckon I can line you up with a top job, paying really good money.” “I’m always looking for the next job,” says the duck. “Where is it?” “At the circus,” says the bartender. “The circus?” repeats the duck. “That’s right,” replies the bartender. “The circus?” the duck asks again. “With the big TENT?” “Yeah!” the bartender replies. “With all the animals who live in CAGES, and performers who live in CARAVANS?” says the duck. “Of course,” the bartender replies. “And the tent has CANVAS sides and a big canvas roof with a hole in the middle?” persists the duck. “That’s right!” says the bartender. The duck shakes his head in amazement, and says: “What would they want with a plasterer?”
BLOODY SALESMEN A copier salesman was continually bothering the waiter in a restaurant, at first he’d asked that the air conditioning be turned up because he was too hot, then he asked it be turned down because he was too cold, and so on for about half an hour. Surprisingly, the waiter was very patient, he walked back and forth and never once got angry. So finally, a proper customer asked him why he didn’t throw out the pest. “Oh, that salesman I don’t care.” said the waiter with a smile. “We don’t even have an air conditioner.”
“I love watching you when you’re sleeping…”
DUCK HUNTING
SAY IT WITH FLOWERS
A lawyer went duck hunting for the first time in Texas. He shot and dropped a bird, but it fell into a farmer’s field on the other side of the fence. As the lawyer climbed over the fence, an elderly farmer drove up on his tractor and asked him what he was doing. The litigator responded, “I shot a duck, it fell into this field, and now I’m going to retrieve it.” The old farmer replied, “This is my property and you are not coming over here.” The indignant lawyer said, “I am one of the best trial attorneys in the U.S. and if you don’t let me get that duck, I’ll sue you and take everything you own.” The old farmer smiled and said, “Apparently, you don’t know how we do things in Texas. We settle small disagreements like this with the Texas Three-Kick Rule.” The lawyer asked, “What is the Texas Three-Kick Rule?” The Farmer replied, “Well, first I kick you three times and then you kick me three times, and so on, back and forth, until someone gives up.” The attorney quickly thought about the proposed contest and decided that he could easily take the old codger. He agreed to abide by the local custom. The old farmer slowly climbed down from the tractor and walked up to the city feller. His first kick planted the toe of his heavy work boot into the lawyer’s groin and dropped him to his knees. His second kick nearly wiped the man’s nose off his face. The barrister was flat on his belly when the farmer’s third kick to a kidney nearly caused him to give up. The lawyer summoned every bit of his will and managed to get to his feet and said, “Okay, you old coot! Now, it’s my turn!” The old farmer smiled and said, “No, I give up. You can have the duck.”
A new business was opening, and one of the owner’s friends sent flowers for the occasion. But when the owner read the card with the flowers, it said “Rest in Peace”. The owner was a little upset and called the florist to complain. After he had told the florist about the obvious mistake, the florist said, “Sir, I’m really sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry, you should imagine this: Somewhere there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying, “Congratulations on your new location.”
“I love the way your hair flows when I’m walking behind you.”
Just a few of the messages I wrote on a Valentine’s card for my girlfriend.
AUCTION Selling at an auction was halted when the auctioneer announced, “Someone in the room has lost his wallet containing £2,000. He is offering a reward of £500.00 for its immediate return.” After a moment of silence, there was a call from the back of the room, “£550.00”
THREE PLUS THREE, MAKES… Three tax accountants and three officers from the Tax Department are travelling by train to a conference. At the station the three tax officers each buy tickets and watch as the accountants buy only a single ticket. ‘How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?’ asks a tax officer. ‘Watch and you’ll see,’ answers an accountant. They all board the train. The tax officers take their seats but all three accountants cram into a toilet and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train departs the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the toilet door and says, ‘Ticket please.’ The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on. The tax officers see this and agree it is quite a clever idea. So, after the conference, they decide to copy the
accountants on the return trip to save some money (after discussing it and agreeing it wouldn’t be caught as a scheme under the Tax Act). When they get to the station they buy a single ticket. To their astonishment, the accountants don’t buy a ticket at all. ‘How are you going to travel without a ticket?’ asks one perplexed officer. ‘Watch and you’ll see,’ answers an accountant. When they board the train the three tax officers cram into a toilet and the three accountants cram into another one nearby. The train departs. Shortly afterward, one of the accountants leaves the toilet and walks over to the one where the tax officers are hiding. He knocks on the door and says, ‘Ticket please.’
PERSONAL FITNESS Two women who had just met at a health spa were talking about their lifestyles and how they hope to stay healthy. One asked the other to detail her daily routine. “I eat moderately,” she replied, “I exercise moderately, I drink moderately, and I live moderately.” “Is there anything else you do?” her new friend asked. “Yes,” she said, “I lie extensively.”
IT’S NEARLY BARBEQUE TIME A man goes into B&Q and says, “I’d like to order 5,000 facing bricks.” “Certainly” says the salesman, “Are they for a garage?” “No” says the man; “They’re for a Bar-B-Q” “Why do you need so many?” asks the salesman “Well,” says the man “We live in a 3rd floor flat.”
NEW YEAR THOUGHTS Marriage is nature’s way of keeping people from fighting with strangers. A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.
I think she’ll definitely go out with me when she reads it.
