Route One Print named in Fast Track 100 Online trade printer Route One Print has cemented their place in the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100, after continuing their impressive growth in 2016. The Yorkshire-based business was named 88th in the list of Britain’s fastest growing private companies after seeing their revenue grow by an average of 54% per year over the past three years. Founded in 2012 by Adam Carnell and James Kinsella, the business now employs a team of more than 260, including the addition of 92 in the past 12 months. In 2015 Route One Print became the first Rotherham-based firm to make the list, taking position 50 having averaged 62% growth over the previous three years, a feat that has now been repeated in 2016. Route One Print co-founder Adam Carnell

said: “It is terrific that we have been able to retain our place in the Fast Track 100 and are amongst such a prestigious cohort of companies. Our business has continued to grow at a tremendous rate this year; we have added a great group of new faces to the company, built on our revenue, and been able to invest in more production equipment. We have worked hard to gain this success since Route One Print was founded and being named in the Fast Track 100 for a second straight year is a testament to everyone that works for the business.” Route One Print is part of the Bluetree Group, created in 2012 alongside sister companies instantprint and Bluetree Point of Sale. Over the past two years the business has invested £16 million in the latest generation equipment coupled with a new production facility based in Manvers just outside of Rotherham. This

move has been supported by a £1.5 million grant from the LEP’s Unlocking Business Investment Regional Growth Fund programme. To qualify for the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 a business needs to have grown sales by at least 42% for three consecutive years, achieved over £5m sales in the final year and achieved an operating profit of over £500,000 in the final year. Route One Print co-founder, James Kinsella commented: “This is such a fantastic accolade for Route One Print to receive, especially for a second consecutive year. Over the past few years the team have worked incredibly hard to keep developing our proposition and moving the business forward in a very competitive market. It’s great to see UK manufacturing performing and it’s a credit to the team we have here.” www.Route1Print.co.uk

Grafenia acquisition of Add Signs Grafenia plc (GRA) has announced that it has completed the acquisition of Liverpool based ADD Signs (Arthur Diamond Design Limited). Mark Eccleston, owner of ADD Signs, joins Grafenia as Regional Director. He will continue to lead the team at ADD Signs and develop the business. In the year ending 31st December 2016, ADD Signs’ turnover was approximately £375,000. Peter Gunning, CEO of Grafenia said “After working on projects with Mark and his team for several years, we are delighted to welcome them to the Grafenia family. We have ambitious plans for making signs a bigger part of our offering and are excited that Mark shares our vision.” Mark Eccleston said “We’ve grown our business steadily over the past few years and were looking for ways to take it to the next level. Making cool signs for Nettl, I was intrigued by their business model. When the guys shared their plans with me, it just felt like it made sense and I wanted to play a part in making it happen.” MARKET CONVERGENCE: Historically print, design and sign-making businesses were discreetly different, with limited overlap. More recently, these businesses have converged. Sign makers sell print and most printers supply banners and posters to their clients. Once a client builds a relationship with a designer, it’s common for them to trust the designer to fulfill all graphic requirements — from branding, web, adverts and print, to expo, displays and signage. As well as printing, Grafenia supply a complementary range of expo and point-of-sale signage products through Nettl and printing.com partners. Last year Grafenia invested in equipment to enter the expanding soft signage market which, according to Smithers Pira, is forecast to grow at 20% per year until 2019 and double in size within five years. Whilst there are several established franchise networks, the signage sector remains highly fragmented. Although some signs can be made centrally and shipped cost-effectively, the majority of vehicle graphics and shop signs require local survey and specialist on-site installation. TRANSACTION BENEFITS: ADD Signs has a strong reputation servicing a range of clients, from small businesses in the North West, to

large enterprises, nationwide. This acquisition provides Grafenia with expertise in designing, manufacturing and installing a wide range of vehicle graphics and building signs. Peter Gunning said “We want to use ADD’s know-how to extend our offering further into the sign sector and help our Nettl and printing. com partners sell more to clients. We’ll use ADD’s skills to merchandise a range of sign products to sell nationally through our network. And for partners on Merseyside, we plan to give them access to our manufacturing and installation services.” This includes extending the Nettl offering into vehicle graphics. ADD’s vehicles will be wrapped to proliferate the Nettl brand locally, as a model to replicate across the country. ADD will also substitute print, previously outsourced to a variety of suppliers, with products from the Grafenia range. ADD’s clients will be able to access a much wider range of print and promo items from the Nettl range, all delivered with usual reliability and compelling value. Peter Gunning said “In a converged print and signs sector, our goal is to establish Nettl as the industry leader.” Nettl is available as either a stand alone or bolt-on model for existing graphics businesses. There are currently over 90 Nettl neighbourhood web studio partners in the UK and Ireland and new partners are signing up every month. “Our systems, training and know-how allow a printer, designer or signmaker to deliver higher value web projects, by upskilling their existing team. Whether it’s with print, ecommerce or signage, our aim is to simplify and ‘de-frictionify’ the process. Our clients want to get the most from their promotional budget and we deliver clear, transparent value and an honest, reliable service.” FURTHER ACQUISITIONS: The acquisition of ADD Signs is the first in Grafenia’s planned strategy for growth and they are now looking for other signage businesses on Merseyside, where the owner is looking to exit or retire. The aim is to roll businesses together with ADD Signs and, at an appropriate point, combine manufacturing facilities and launch a Nettl Business Store. Peter Gunning said “We aim to replicate this model across the country. To provide local survey, specialist on-site installation and enable signs to be offered throughout our Nettl network. If you operate a signage business and are looking for an exit strategy or would like support to grow, please email letmein@grafenia.com. We’d love you to join us.”

HP Brightens Alder Hey Children’s Hospital HP has announced that it has created and donated a series of wall graphics for the Clinical Research Facility at Liverpool’s new Alder Hey in the Park Children’s Hospital. The project utilised HP’s Latex technology to create six photographic wall coverings inspired by natural surroundings. The installation was completed in collaboration with HP large format media provider, BMG, and digital print specialist, Colour Create, with the wall coverings printed on an HP Latex 360 Printer at the company’s Liverpool-based facilities, using HP PVC-free Durable Smooth Wall Paper. As Barry Hodgson, Director, Colour Create, explains, HP’s unique water-based Latex inks made the HP Latex 360 Printer the obvious solution for the project. “With HP’s water-based inks, we are able to reach new indoor spaces that solvent-based inks can’t, like healthcare. Working with a children’s hospital, providing prints that are clean, harmless and odourless is paramount, and our HP Latex technology provided us with this assurance.” Wall coverings produced with HP PVC-free Durable Smooth Wall Paper and HP Latex Inks enable healthier and more sustainable printing, and have a host of environmental certifications. Amongst these, HP Latex Inks are UL ECOLOGO® and UL GREENGUARD GOLD Certified, with the odorless displays also meeting AgBB criteria.1** Amanda Rees, Clinical Research Facility Operational Manager, Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are grateful to HP for their kind donation of these wall graphics. The prints were chosen by patients visiting the Clinical Research Facility and reflect the park land in which our hospital is located, bringing the outside in. We’ve had a fantastic reaction from patients, parents and staff to date.”

**UL ECOLOGO® Certification to UL 2801 demonstrates that an ink meets a range of multi-attribute, lifecycle based criteria related to human health and environmental considerations (see ul.com/ EL). UL GREENGUARD GOLD Certification to UL 2818 demonstrates that products are certified to UL’s GREENGUARD standards for low chemical emissions into indoor air during product usage. www.hp.com

Schwartz Printers Grow PUR with DigiBook 450 Brentwood-based Schwartz Printing has upgraded its PUR binding solution from Morgana Systems to the top of the range DigiBook 450 model. The new system has replaced a two-and-a-half year old DigiBook 150, and was purchased directly from Morgana Systems Ltd, the UK manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing. DigiBook 450 is the larger of the stand-alone PUR solutions provided by Morgana, and is capable of delivering up to 450 bound books per hour. The system to suited to both litho and digitally printed product. Chris Futcher, director of Schwartz, said: “The DigiBook 150 served us well as a starting point for our own PUR solution, but our work load for the product has grown over time. The 450 incorporates much more automation, as well as offering a faster throughput, and can be run very effectively with just one operator.” Initially Schwartz had made the move into PUR as demand grew for that style of binding, and whilst there were trade services available, Chris Futcher points out that you lose control of job delivery. “We were talking about a 20 mile trip for the job, and no real guarantee of having the job back in the time that we had specified. It made sense for us to make that initial investment, and it now makes sense for us to enhance our PUR capabilities as the demand for this type of work has increased.” The 17-strong company produces both digital and litho work as a general commercial printer, including work for theatres, solicitors, and report and accounts products. The 20-year-old business incorporates finishing, large format work, and pre-press via a Trueflow network and CtP. Commenting on the purchase, Ray Hillhouse, Vice President Offline Business at Morgana Systems said: “We often focus on the advantages to the digital printer of the DigiBook range – fast make-ready and the sealed glue tank, making them ideal for short run production – but the DigiBook 450 model is also ideal for those producing longer run work via litho. Schwartz has enjoyed the benefits of bringing PUR in-house, and can now see even more potential by switching to the higher capacity machine.”

PUR BINDING FROM MORGANA: PUR is the strongest, most flexible binding adhesive available. When inks, coatings or digital print toners are present in the spine area of printed pages these can compromise the strength of typical hot-melt perfect binding. PUR overcomes this issue and will form a super-strong bond with all weights and finishes of paper stocks. In addition PUR works well with synthetic and recycled-content stock. The DigiBook 450 perfect binding machine is ideally suited to litho and digital printers that require medium to long runs of PUR perfect bound books to a high standard. This innovative machine is equipped with a patented closed gluing system where the spine and side gluing is applied by a slot applicator for the utmost bringing quality and accuracy. www.schwartz-printing.co.uk www.morgana.co.uk

Harrogate Duo Buy Thriving Print Company Two employees at a Harrogate sign centre on Knaresborough Road are celebrating becoming the bosses! Marc Squires (31) and Kevin Masheder (25) bought Signarama Harrogate following the retirement of Michael Webster who opened the specialist signs and visual communications centre 15 years ago. By coincidence Marc and Kevin are both product design graduates. Marc started working at the centre ten years ago and Kevin became part of the production team in 2013. Said Marc: “I have been working here since I left university and have enjoyed every minute of it. Kev and I work well together and it made sense for us to pool our resources to buy the company. We know what a good business this is because we have seen the success for ourselves, so when Michael told us he was retiring and putting the company up for sale it was too good an opportunity to miss. He has built up a really good customer base and we’re looking forward to taking Signarama Harrogate to the next stage.” The business support team at Signarama UK have been working with the new owners to help them transition from being workers to bosses focusing on finance, management and marketing skills. The pair have already been to the company’s worldwide headquarters in Florida for an intensive two-week training course to learn everything there is to know about owning and running a Signarama centre. Said Kevin: “We’ve got a great team here. Every day is different in the sign business and we get to work with some lovely customers. I have always wanted to be my own boss and it’s not every day you get

the chance to buy a ready-made business with a proven pedigree. Being able to access top quality business advice and support through the Signarama Business Support Centre in London helped us tremendously and we learned a lot from the training. We had expert help with putting together a business plan, raising the finance and now have a business mentor to guide us as we adapt to our new management roles.” Since taking over the business Kevin and Marc have invested in refurbishing the shop and installing a new reception area. In addition to contacting existing and previous customers to let them know about the change in ownership they have launched a major marketing campaign which includes social media, email marketing and radio advertising to establish Signarama Harrogate as the town’s leading sign company. www.signaramaharrogate.co.uk

Clays renews its POD solution European book printer Clays is the first major industry player in Europe to sign up for Ricoh’s latest print on demand book production solution. This implementation of Ricoh’s new Digital Book Printing Solution, first shown at drupa 2016, combines Ricoh TotalFlow BatchBuilder with monochrome Ricoh 8120e digital production presses. Ricoh’s Digital Book Printing Solution is a specialised book workflow package. It uses proven TotalFlow BatchBuilder technology optimised for the specific needs of highly intensive short run book environments. The solution is vendor neutral, analysing incoming orders, from multiple channels. It also automates the production of book ‘batches’ based on customisable business rules such as run length, media type, delivery date and even third party finishing requirements. Once the target print platform (web or cut sheet) is selected, the workflow automatically imposes the files via a close integration with Ultimate Technographics Impostrip Automation. Errors can be detected quickly and corrected with the integration of Enfocus PitStop Pro into the Ricoh workflow. Using Ricoh’s Digital Book Printing Solution to process batches of books, rather than single jobs, on both digital and offset presses, dramatically improves operational efficiencies along with reducing waste. The ability to integrate to legacy MIS systems, using JDF and JMF, enables a real time view of production — even down to a single book. Clays produces over 140 million books per year for publishers such as Penguin Random House, Hachette UK, HarperCollins, Pearson, Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press. Paul Hulley, Clays Managing Director, comments, “High quality, fast turnaround, ultra-short run book production has been an important part of our offer for some time; we are pleased to be working with Ricoh to refresh and enhance our capability in this area.” “We researched what solutions were available on the market to achieve that. Ricoh’s Digital Book Printing Solution was best suited to meet our requirements. We expect return on investment will be about 18 months based on current production methods.” www.ricoh.co.uk

Catford Print Centre Streamlines with Horizon HT30 Catford Print Centre has created a smoother on demand book production process following investment in an IFSsupplied Horizon HT30C three-side trimmer. Owner Russell Jones explains: “We have been fully aware of the slow decline in offset litho work over the years. We have replaced it with digital jobs and found that paperback books were one area we felt we could develop. “We have had great response from a marketing campaign and that lead to an upsurge in book sales. It was no longer feasible to three side trim books manually on the guillotine. It was creating a bottleneck. It was also preventing operators from getting on with other profitable work.” The 200 cycles per hour Horizon HT-30C three-side trimmer features automated job set-up and quick changeovers. A colour touch screen allows all set-ups to be performed with full automation and the ability to store up to 40 different jobs in memory. As for choosing the Horizon HT30C he said: “We recognised that we needed a three-side trimmer but initially couldn’t justify the investment. We had plenty of time to causally observe other machines. We have a BQ270 so knew and liked the build quality. We also liked the service from IFS. The HT30C was also perhaps the simplest, yet most effective entry level machine.” Adds Jones: “It has already made a significant difference in productivity. That increase means we are able to take on more work.” He concludes: “Our main considerations were freeing up the guillotine and making life more comfortable for our operators. It couldn’t have come sooner.” www.ifsl.uk.com

Renz UK first for Your Print Solution High Wycombe digital and large format print specialist Your Print Solution has installed the UK’s first Renz AP 300 compact heavy-duty, floor standing, automatic punch machine. Steven Brown and business partner David Jackson founded the business in 2006 and today the operation runs an Indigo 7000 press and a HP 2600 Latex wide format printer. Clients include Twentieth Century Fox, YMCA, Euro Car Parts, Arbonne, The British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) and Kensington. “The Renz AP 300 has more than doubled our capacity,” says Brown. “We do a lot of wire binding. We can get through a couple of thousand print on demand books a day. Each one can be for a specific course or personalised. On average we were wire binding for about eight hours a day. It was one person’s job. Now they can do that in a half a day and move onto something else.” The system was chosen after a thorough review of the market available solutions explains Brown: “We went to drupa and looked at a number of options. We looked at the Renz AP360 as well but it was too big for us. The new AP300 was perfect — just what we needed.” He continues: “The goal was to save time. There was a lot of pressure on the operator to get the work out. Now we don’t have that constraint on our time. We are able to turn work around much faster. It is also automated so it can be left alone to run.” The Renz AP 300 has an automatic punching process and two finger paper pick up system which can handle a range of mixed stock and enables fast die and format changes. There is a touch screen for assisted set-up process, QSA (Quick Size Adjustment) for high flexibility of different paper formats and high prestack capacity up to 4,000 sheets. Fitted wheels allow the machine to be easily moved around. As for its business impact Brown states: “It was an investment in a system that we needed and it is making a big difference. Our operator said it has been a massive help. Punching is a labour intensive job. The AP 300 has taken our punching bottleneck away. We now have the capacity to take on more work.” Renz UK managing director Iain Bullock comments: “The Renz AP 300 incorporates many features tried and tested on its highly successful bigger brother – the Renz AP 360. It has been designed to sit between high end benchtop systems and high speed automatic solutions. It addresses, and is aimed at the punching bottleneck in the A4 and A5 market. “Its ease of use is a big attraction as it can be set up and left to run while the operator does something else. It can also be wheeled in and out when it is needed making it ideal for operations with very tight bindery space.” www.renz.co.uk

Pantone colour of the year 2017

Pantone LLC has announced its colour of the year as 15-0343 A refreshing and revitalising shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings. Greenery is a fresh and zesty yellowgreen shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew. Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate. Greenery is nature’s neutral. The more submerged people are in modern life, the greater their innate craving to immerse themselves in the physical beauty and inherent unity of the natural world. This shift is reflected by the proliferation of all things expressive of Greenery in daily lives through urban planning, architecture, lifestyle and design choices globally. A constant on the periphery, Greenery is now being pulled to the forefront — it is an omnipresent hue around the world. A life-affirming shade, Greenery is also emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality. www.pantone.com

Phase Print brings lamination in house with Foliant Phase Print has brought all its lamination in house with an IFS-supplied Foliant Mercury 530 SF laminator integrating a deep pile stacker. Kevin Marks, managing director of the B2 and B3 Nottinghamshire general commercial print operation, explains: “We already had lamination capabilities but we needed something that better suited our needs. We were sending some work out and decided that a new laminator would allow us to keep it all in house. That means we can finish it straight away, saving time and cutting down on outsourcing costs.” As for making the decision about the 25 m/ min Foliant Mercury 530SF he says: “We looked at other systems. It had to be the right one. It had to support flexible production and be able to do what we wanted it to do.” “With a responsibility for supplying many blue chip companies and government organisations it was essential we had the right equipment, complimenting the rest of our operation, that delivers high quality, efficient production and cost effective laminating.” He adds: “We researched the market and heard lots of good things about the Foliant. It is quick to set up and easy to use. We knew it also came with a high level of service and reliability;

that was important to us.” The Foliant Mercury 530SF is a new generation of easy available very compact industrial laminating machines, designed for a heavy duty in house lamination of digital and offset outputs (max. format 53 x 75 cm), with an integrated deep pile vacuum feeder and a high-speed bump separator, in-run adjustable twin decurl bar and overlap system. Due to its pneumatic high pressure system, format and performance the machine is suitable for all jobs

— all kinds of digital printed sheets. He concludes: “It will enhance our operation, efficiency and help us book more business. We can be very confident in the turnaround times we quote. Customers want their jobs to be delivered when they expect them to be. There is no leverage. We can also now sell lamination as a value-added service — especially the soft touch lamination which is proving very popular with many of our customers.” www.ifsl.uk.com

Iberian sees the light with AG CAD As a commercial print and signage company, Iberian Digital is a company with a difference — it’s also known as one of Europe’s leading bespoke industrial lighting manufacturers. To serve two industry sectors with distinction, the Iberian Group invests in production equipment that has the flexibility to handle the requirements of both sectors, and this is why the East Sussex company opted for a DYSS X5 digital cutter from AG CAD. Prior to the arrival of the DYSS X5 in September, the St Leonards-On-Sea business was either cutting its specialised fabric, card, paper and vinyl materials by hand or with a guillotine, whereas more complex designs were sent to an external subcontractor. Whilst the DYSS has slashed subcontract costs and lead times since its installation, it was the winning of a large lighting contract for a hotel chain that sealed the decision to invest in a digital cutting machine. The 24 employee Iberian Group is growing at a rapid rate with the existing facility being trebled in size from 11,000sq/ft to over 33,000sq/ft. The expansion will accommodate the recent year-on-year growth rate of 20% whilst facilitating its ambitions to accelerate its future growth to beyond 40% annually. The arrival of new long-term projects is helping to underpin this growth strategy. To help evolve at such speed, the company has invested in new wide format print equipment. However, without the arrival of the DYSS digital cutter, the additional printing equipment would have created a downstream bottleneck in the cutting and finishing department. As Iberian Lighting’s Managing Director, Mr Les Allitt recalls: “We had just won a two-year contract from a hotel chain for over 20,000 light shades that consisted of over 10 different variants. We realised we couldn’t have managed the order with our previous printing machines and cutting the shades by hand. We invested in a new high speed Mutoh wide format printer that is six times faster than the previous printer. This helped to solve the print bottleneck whilst the DYSS X5 eliminated our reliance on a third party contractor for cutting the lightshades. The result is that we can now turn out bespoke digital print projects and bespoke lighting in 7-10 days and remain in full control of the production process. This lead-time was previously in the region of 2-3 weeks.” As well as reducing the lead-times on projects by up to two weeks, a core benefit for Iberian is the ability to bring the work in-house and regain complete control over its production process. As Mr Allitt continues: “Prior to the arrival of the DYSS X5, we had one member of staff cutting by hand full-time with more complex work sent to an external supplier. The DYSS has

enabled us to re-distribute our labour resource and eliminate a major external cost. The saving in the cost of subcontract cutting will pay for the DYSS in less than two years. In fact, we are using the DYSS flat out for five days a week, so it will probably pay back faster than we realise.” At present, Iberian estimates the DYSS X5 is cutting more than 2,000m of material every month. The type of material being cut on the DYSS has evolved from fabric and card to more diverse materials, as the South Coast company has realised the potential of the machine. As Mr Allitt says: “Initially we bought the DYSS to eliminate bottlenecks and our reliance on subcontractors. After its installation, we realised additional benefits such as reduced labour requirement, better cut quality and precision and also an ability to process new materials. We’ve even reduced our material stock holding by over 20%. But it is the realisation that we can cut all types of material that has really excited us.” “Since the DYSS was installed, we’ve already added wallpaper design and production to our portfolio. We had the design expertise in-house, but it’s the ability of the K-Cut vision system on the DYSS to cut with impeccable precision that is permitting us to manufacture our own lines of wallpaper. This example of diversification is now allowing us to challenge our design team to develop new concepts and market sectors for our business. Being near the coast, we are

also cutting more vinyl graphics for boats, cars and vans. The next step is the PoS industry. Our new-found ability to rapidly make samples in-house will position us well for exploiting this market. The in-house designers are already using the KASEMAKE CAD software suite from AG CAD to create cartons and boxes for new customers. In fact, the DYSS X5 and the KASEMAKE CAD suite are the tools that now allow our designers to turn concepts from onscreen designs to physical samples,” concludes Mr Allitt. www.agcad.co.uk www.iberiandigital.co.uk

Sign & Digital UK launches new Creative Theatre Sign & Digital UK has announced the launch of a new Creative Theatre for its 30th anniversary event, which returns to the NEC, Birmingham from 28 to 30 March 2017. The Creative Theatre will explore this year’s show theme of applications, ideas and advice, and will play host to an extensive programme of free daily seminars, including case studies, content and learning developed specifically for professionals in the graphics, branding and display industries. Seminar sessions which will run on all three days of the show, will include topics on the future of digital advertising and signage, interior wall décor, future materials and colour management. On the opening day of the show, visitors will be able to hear from expert speakers discussing the practical applications for interior decorations and wall graphics. The session will examine best practice approaches to working with the client from brief to design, production and installation. On Wednesday 29 March, Kate Waters, Head Designer of International Brand Agency , I AM will discuss ‘Latest trends: understanding customer expectations and experience in retail’ — this talk will examine the latest trends influencing creative solutions; how to enhance the customer journey by designing engaging retail branding and interiors. The seminars taking place on Thursday 30 March will include an exploration of signage design and how wayfinding works in practice plus how to create effective advertising and branding opportunities with wrapping. Event director, Rudi Blackett said: “The launch of a new Creative Theatre really allows us to diversify our offering to visitors. One of the main focuses this year is on applications, and the creative processes that take place pre-production, so these sessions will be great for visitors working in creative industries – graphic designers and design and brand agencies especially. “We’re celebrating 30 years as a national exhibition in 2017, so it’s really pleasing to see such an innovative line-up of speakers and case studies.” Sign & Digital takes place at the NEC, Birmingham from 28 to 30 March 2017 and is free to attend for all QPP readers. www.signanddigitaluk.com

PIXEL PROPHET

SWITCHES TO MANUAL Martin Christie can’t remember a year that has started with so much doubt and uncertainty, for all of us, not just the print industry. Typing these words as the truth of Brexit is being spelled out by the Prime Minister, many months after the nation voted for something they thought they were being offered, but not actually guaranteed, and a day a man is being raised into the most powerful job in the world, voted by people with only the vaguest idea of what he actually stood for, apart from the feeling that he was speaking for them.

[I]

’m not turning this column into a political statement, but only to reflect how it rebounds upon all of us directly as uncertainty discourages spending, and doubt causes the pound to drop and thus increase the cost of many of the resources we have to buy. A cost we cannot easily pass on to immediate purchasers when inflation — that condition we have survived without for a decade — now raises its head again. Some of the headlines in the mainstream media disguise the real facts. The city financiers may be toasting the climate but they are geared to make profit either way, boom or slump. We have to work in the real world of hard cash, not speculation. One of the main themes that has come out of the upheaval of the last twelve months is the influence of direct social media in directing peoples preferences, rather than the established mainstream media of newspapers, radio and TV. Much of the latter completely failed to predict the trends that were moving inexorably through cyberspace and the electronic handshake that completely by-passed the conventional popular polls. In this failure we are equally liable to be victims unless we grasp the reality of the speed in which the new media is being accepted as the primary source of information by the general public, our customers. The very nature of the current internet is partly to blame. Although ideally designed to provide information free and independent to

all, the introduction of paid adverts and preferences has inevitably swung the balance towards the big players, those who are either able to spend more or plug the right chords for the search engines. It was always the same, for those old enough to remember Yellow Pages as a business phone directory, you learned not to phone the first number in a big paid advert but scroll down to maybe find an independent supplier, often more local to you, that could give you a more personal service, at a better price. Experience however, is seeming to become a rare commodity in an impatient world. Hence those frustrated by search engines overloaded by sponsored links will increasingly turn to friends, and friends of friends, for advice. And this is is where the migration to the dominance of social media has a serious consequence. Those websites, anxious to discover more information about their users, and keen to provide the input they prefer, are gradually but progressively selecting the details that are available, and directing people only to what they want to see. The likes and preferences that seem so inocuous at the time develop a profile that directs traffic and forms a pattern that is invaluable to the marketing department, even if they provide an overload of cute cats and incredible near misses. We are condemned to a world of algorithms, whether we like it or not. However much we try and avoid it, our banks will be

following our patterns of purchase, even our physical movements. This can be positive, to flag up fraud, but also leaves vulnerable areas where patterns are not recognised by computers. It is, of course, possible to edit many of these preferences on social media and other subscription websites, but most people don’t bother to tamper with automatic settings or bother too much with the small print and finer detail. But it can make a big difference, and not only to the choice of friends, but suggestions on the supply of goods and services. This completely cuts across the established wisdom of conventional advertising and promotion, and the longer term implications can be difficult to predict, much like the events of the last year. There is another way in which this general behaviour pattern affects our particular industry, in that a reliance upon processors to make decisions and choices, and not take manual control of devices, whether phone, tablet or camera, leads to results which can be equally unpredictable, at least when it is necessary to turn the digital information into hard print. All the automated settings on convenience devices are designed to be convenient for the instruments themselves, reducing file size for storage and transmission for example, and simplifying colour information for display. The perceived need for speed is directly at odds with the need for detail required to reproduce accurate print files as the devices were never

designed to produce print, or at least not as their primary or even secondary purpose. Camera phones and tablets are primarily intended to talk to each other, as the minimum space devoted to the lens compared to the screen indicates. Even most digital cameras, where the ratio of optics to display is more equally balanced, are given controls and process commands more suited to electronic publication rather than print. Very few will have switches set to manual to give the user proper control over the eventual output. All digital devices contain detailed information on when, where and how images were taken, and unless this has been wiped in resampling, it is an invaluable guide to possible picture quality, easily accessed through Adobe Photoshop, Bridge or Lightroom. File size and pixel count are measures of quantity, but the metadata gives a clue to the probable quality. With film it was very easy to spot a poor negative, without any of these aids. Simply holding it up to the light would show whether it was sharp or not, or how dense the colour saturation was, to predict how it would likely print. In comparison, viewing files on a small, bright hi-resolution screen doesn’t help judge the output translated into print without further investigation. Colour in particular can be very deceptive, with most people, now so used to seeing the world on a backlit canvas, failing to appreciate how it will look with a solid background. Traditional film was very forgiving

of lighting conditions by its very nature. Digital requires much more attention as unlike the seamless transition of celuloid, each individual pixel has to make a decision on which colour it will be, and what shade of that colour it will remember. Professional and experienced photographers will be aware of this and take appropriate control, often using RAW format to avoid the automated processing of colour and exposure information in the camera. But the average customer, and the overwhelming majority of people bringing digital images to the print shop, will have simply relied on automatic settings to preserve their cherished memories, and this is not always the best option.

EPSON LAUNCH

Always worth a visit to Epson in Hemel Hempstead despite having to battle with the best efforts of Southern Rail. This time for the launch of two new 17 inch, ten colour printers. Nothing revolutionary as such, but as Epson point out, the proven technology is being fine tuned rather than reinvented, and that improvements are incremental rather than ground breaking. The addition to the latest Sure Color range, the P5000, is aimed at two specific markets, one for proofing and one for photographic and fine art printing. The two models are quite distinct, with the proofing version having a new violet ink, and the other having the now conventional light light black. The inks are not interchangeable like matt and photo inks in other models so the customer must chose his or her market — a distinction which Epson believe is fairly clear cut. In reality both printers perform exceptional colour matching as you would expect with the proofing version just able to nudge into the 99% Pantone

Thought foiling & spot UV was expensive?

There is a certain amount that can be done at the shop counter to compensate, advising that the image might print a little dark, for example, or that it is not likely to be enlarged to the desired size and still look as attractive as it does on a two inch screen. Then there can be a certain amount of tweaking that can be done to the source file, or to the information sent directly to the printer. The amount of adjustment, and the time taken is related to the experience of the operator, and the value of the job to the customer. That’s common sense. But digital information is not, by its nature, set in stone. It can be altered to a small or even a large degree by taking manual control of otherwise automative settings. It’s not advisable to experiment directly on customer’s original files, so working with a copy, or using adjustable layers is the preferred action, as mentioned in previous columns. Without going into too much editing detail this time a certain amount can be done using very basic tools in Photoshop. The basic controls

23

of brightness, exposure and contrast have been there since the beginning but even Adobe advise that they are very crude means of making adjustment. Then there are three Auto controls, for Tone, Contrast and Colour. Using these by their default settings is falling for the same trap outlined above — letting the processor decide the composition regardless of content. What a lot of users don’t realise is that these controls can be customised to give a manual override of the functions by using the sliders in Levels and Curves. There are presets hidden within the task panel to tune different aspects of the image as preferred or an entirely new profile can be created as a custom setting which may suit a particular printer, for example, or a collection of images. Like any task in Photoshop, there are several ways of achieving a desired outcome. Tuning the auto controls is an easy way of speeding up the workflow for print on demand, where speed is more important than absolute accuracy.

accuracy zone, while the photographic covers the more subtle shadow areas particularly for monochrome images. It may seem like splitting hairs when discussing the difference between a million colours and nine hundred odd thousand, but the search for ultimate perfection is relentless, especially for an innovation company like Epson, now celebrating its 75th year. Although described as having a small footprint, the P5000 will still need a fairly large, and stable, desktop. And you won’t want to move it too often. The good news is they have kept the price to under two thousand pounds before vat, and as a vote of confidence have extended the warranty to two years instead of one — other manufacturers take note! www.epson.co.uk

Premier plants a further 5,000 trees The Premier Paper Group has held the latest of its successful tree planting action days, where some 5,000 new sapling trees were planted by customers, staff and students at the Woodland Trust-owned Heartwood Forest in Hertfordshire. The 5,000 saplings represented 1,000 trees planted for each year of Premier’s five-year association with The Woodland Trust. The 160 volunteers, who braved bracing and chilling temperatures on the day, comprised of a mixture of Premier customers, their clients and also pupils from three local schools in the Hertfordshire area. To help maintain high spirits and keep the volunteers fuelled, hot food and drink was supplied throughout the day. Before they set off, armed with their spades, guidance was provided by staff members and volunteers of the Woodland Trust, along with Wilder Things’ Tim Kirwin, who was behind the Woodland Communities Project and is an officer for the Woodland Trust. A brief presentation was then given by the Woodland Trust, where Chief Executive of the Woodland Trust, Beccy Speight, presented Premier Paper’s Area Sales Director, Geoff Parnell, with a commemorative plaque celebrating Premier’s five years of partnership with the organisation. The group was then split into five teams to embark on their day of helping to assist in the growth of native natural forest woodland. The 160 participants helped to plant a variety of native tree species, including; Sessile Oak, Pedunculate Oak, Cherry and Hornbeam amongst others. This latest tree planting feat is the third successive Premier tree planting event to take place at Heartwood Forest, which is set to become the UK’s largest continuous new native woodland. The past year has seen in excess of 55,000 trees planted by Premier’s customers, all of whom have participated and engaged in Premier’s Carbon Capture scheme, which has helped to capture some 11,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, a unique environmental achievement. Commenting on the recent tree planting day of action, and also the marking of its five-year association with The Woodland Trust, Premier Paper Group, Marketing Director, Dave Jones, stated, “5,000 Trees planted in one day is a fabulous achievement and I am delighted that we managed to meet our target. It was also good to receive the beautiful plaque from the Woodland Trust recognising the efforts and contribution made by Premier and our customers.” Heartwood Forest: Heartwood Forest, located near Sandbridge, just north of St Albans in Hertfordshire, is an 858-acre site and is the largest of The Woodland Trust’s woods in England and also the largest continuous new native woodland in the country. At the annual meeting of Two Sides Country Managers in London, representatives from Europe, North America, South America, South Africa and Australia determined to renew efforts to stop organisations using anti-print and paper messages in their marketing. Claims like, ‘go paperless, go green’ and ‘go paperless, save trees’, are commonplace as major corporations promote electronic services and products to reduce costs. However, such claims are not backed up by any analysis, they ignore the unique sustainable features of print and paper, and they do not consider the fact that all communication channels have an environmental impact. In a joint statement, Two Sides Country Managers stated: “Our global anti-greenwash campaign, targeted at major banks, utilities, telecoms and other Fortune 500 companies, has investigated nearly 500 organisations worldwide. Of these, 63% have been found to be using greenwash in their marketing, usually in breach of local regulations, and after being challenged by Two Sides, 70% have voluntarily amended their messaging — a great success story!” “We intend to carry on this important work, which, if left unchallenged, would leave millions of consumers believing that the use of paper is environmentally unfriendly. The reality is that paper is produced by a highly responsible industry which manages forests for the benefit of future generations.” Two Sides is supported by leading companies and associations worldwide, spanning the graphic communications value chain and covering industry associations, inks and chemicals, envelopes and mail, merchants, print equipment, printers, converters, and pulp and paper producers. www.twosides.info

trees have been planted at the site, which contains some 44 acres of precious ancient woodland, our equivalent of the rainforest, which sadly now makes up just 2% of UK land cover, and dates back to at least 1600AD as well as containing newly planted woodland. The site is seeking to become the largest new continuous native forest in England. The Woodland Trust: As the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity, The Woodland Trust has been planting trees and standing up for woodland for over 40 years, planting an incredible 36m trees since 1972. This has helped to enhance its standing as a voice for woodland and the species that call it home. The Woodland Trust works tirelessly to create woodlands which can benefit our environment and be enjoyed and valued by everyone. Woodland not only provides a rich, bio diverse environment for wildlife but also provides us all with green, open space for rest and recreation. More than 1,200 woodlands throughout the UK are owned or managed by the Woodland Trust, covering in excess of 60,000 acres throughout the UK, with free and easy year round access for us all to enjoy. Trees improve our quality of life, making our local communities and neighbourhoods greener and more pleasant places to live. www.woodlandtrust.org.uk www.paper.co.uk

How to become ‘communication smart’ At the recent EuroTrophex in Amsterdam TheMagicTouch were proud recipients of the prestigious “Best Image Transfer Product of 2016” award based on an application using the latest in white-toner technology. The company introduced their new RST9.1 transfer paper which enables full colour imaging onto a wide range of non-fabric products and substrates with rough surfaces, including untreated wood, slate, cork, ceramics, plastics, MDF and lots more. The award winning entry consisted of a personalised Fender Telecaster Guitar decorated using the RST9.1 transfer paper which was printed using the TMT/OKi white toner printer. The transfer was applied to the body of the guitar using a traditional swing head heat press and then finished with six layers of clear resin varnish to match the factory original finish. In addition a selection of guitar picks were also included decorated with unique personalised designs and again printed using TheMagicTouch image transfer process. The original design is from a photograph featuring the view from “Dukes Bar” at the Outrigger Hotel in Hawaii where the guitar is to be auctioned in December helping to raise money towards local charities. The event will be hosted by Hawaii’s number one rock star Henry Kapono. Here at QPP we are fortunate to have our very own fitness fanatic roving reporter, so we asked Andrew Foulkes for his appraisal of fitness belts. “Some people like them, some don’t, and I do! I think they’re handy for putting keys, energy gels etc. in and would prefer to use one for my phone rather than an arm strap which I find annoying. Also, if packed properly stuff doesn’t move around. You also get to put it where you want it, as using pockets means you’re stuck with the manufacturers fixed positions which aren’t always comfortable when running.” Thanks Andy, jog on… SPS also offer end user artwork. Nettl chicken and egg The Colourfast research into selling a website design build and host service is proceeding nicely with Becky in training and using her print design skills to build websites. Over the coming months we will share this case study with you and publish some real scenario websites for you to judge. We will also aim to attract print to promote the websites, brochures, business cards etc. So what does come first in this chicken and egg scenario? Does website designing catch the print jobs too and will web designers be nicking our print? Not if we can help it! I am now more convinced that our print industry needs to skill up to produce websites. The Nettl system allows this by utilising our existing experience in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. No requirement to write code, as this is a co-operative knowledge share opportunity to publish websites using our existing in-house skill set. QPP are road testing this project with specific goals in mind; Training new skills for our industry, winning new business for printers, making them more sustainable and importantly securing existing business. The proof will be shared in our on going case study, “Where are you on your web journey so far and do you need help?” Watch this space. Nettl.com

New Mimaki textile printer keeps Heriot Watt University at cutting edge With a reputation for innovative education, enterprise and leading-edge applied research; Heriot Watt University’s School of Textiles and Design is one of the UK’s foremost teaching establishments and its recent investment in additional Mimaki textile printers puts its Textile Design and Fashion undergraduate courses at the cutting edge. One of the first Mimaki Tx300-1800P directto-textile wide format printers to be installed in the UK joins the school’s line-up of Mimaki textile machines and provides its 25 final year Design for Textiles students with the capability to output designs onto a range of fabrics for their Degree Show. Senior Technician, Dr Roger Spark, indicates how the printer is a vital addition to the school’s print capabilities. “Our existing Mimaki printers have served us well for over 10 years but with the added capacity of the new Tx300, we’re able to more efficiently deliver the long runs required by our students for their final year collections,” he states. “We offer the potential for not only the Design for Textiles undergraduates to print their work but also the provision of printed fabric for our fashion students to make into garments in our sewing workshops.” Citing Heriot Watt’s emphasis on preparing graduates for life in industry, Spark details how effective the courses the school offers are. “Our graduates tend to follow one of two paths,” he says. “Many of them are successful in finding positions in the textile industry but we also see students starting up their own fashion and design businesses, as the footing they gain through the courses we offer stands them in good stead for their careers ahead.” With programmes geared towards fashion as well as interior design, students benefit from the school’s significant printing capabilities. Along with its three Mimaki printers, the textile

department also boasts one of the longest flatbed screen print tables in education and all were installed by specialist Mimaki textile reseller, R A Smart (CAD & Machinery). “We’re proud of the enduring relationship we share with Heriot Watt,” says the company’s Managing Director, Magnus Mighall. “Their recent investment in the latest Mimaki textile printer will be of great benefit to the school and its students. Having supplied and supported the university with screen and digital print equipment for over 25 years; seeing their continued drive to deliver industry-ready graduates into the textile and fashion sector remains as satisfying as ever.” The Mimaki Tx300P-1800 is a 1.8m wide textile printer, which, through using reactive, pigment, acid or disperse inks, can be used to

print to cotton, silk, wool and polyester. With production speeds of up to 55sq metres / hour, it is ideal for short to medium run production and its superior print quality lends it perfectly to producing high end fashion, furnishings and other textiles. Exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services; the company’s National Sales Manager, Textile & Apparel — Stephen Woodall is excited about the impact the new Tx300P-1800 is already having. “This is one of the very first of the new printers to be installed in a university and it’s great to see students benefiting from the absolute latest textile printing technology,” he says. “Heriot Watt’s undergraduate textile courses offer a unique and valuable opportunity for prospective fashion designers to experience industry standard equipment and processes.” With a critical element in textile printing being accurate colour management; Spark is seeing a tangible benefit in Mimaki’s latest reactive inks and profiles. “The school invested in a suite of Apple Macs running AVA design and colouring software a few years ago, and using these in conjunction with the colour profiles provided with the new Mimaki RIP package is delivering superb results,” he confirms. “We waited for the right machine to come along and the new Tx300P-1800 has fitted in to our print room perfectly,” concludes Spark. Full details of the School of Textiles and Design courses, its long history and student life can be found by visiting www.tex.hw.ac.uk The full Mimaki line-up is available through Hybrid’s reseller network. www.hybridservices.co.uk

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Back to school

A bank robber pulls out a gun, points it at the cashier, and says, “Give me all the money or you’re geography!” The puzzled cashier replies, “Did you mean to say ‘or you’re history?’” The robber says, “Don’t change the subject!”

Head start

Why do barbers make good drivers? Because they know all the short cuts!

Sick Joke

A guy goes to the doctor. Guy: “Doc, I think I broke my arm in three places.” Doctor: “Well, don’t go to those places!”

Clever answer

Little Johnny asked his father, “Where did I get my intelligence from?” His father replied, “It must be from your mother... because I still have mine.”

Anniversary Bliss

On their 25th wedding anniversary, a husband took his wife out to dinner. Their teenage daughters said they’d have dessert waiting for them when they returned. After the couple got home, they saw that the dining room table was beautifully set with china, crystal and candles, and there was a note that read: “Your dessert is in the refrigerator. We are staying with friends, so go ahead and do something we wouldn’t do!” “I suppose,” the husband responded, “we could vacuum.”

Airline crack

I was flying from San Francisco to Los Angeles. By the time we took off, there had been a 45-minute delay and everybody on board was ticked. Unexpectedly, we stopped in Sacramento on the way. The flight attendant explained that there would be another 45-minute delay, and if we wanted to get off the aircraft, we would re-board in 30 minutes. Everybody got off the plane except one gentleman who was blind. I noticed him as I walked by and could tell he had flown before because his Seeing Eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of him throughout the entire flight. I could also tell he had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached him and, calling him by name, said, “Keith, we’re in Sacramento for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?” Keith replied, “No thanks, but maybe my dog would like to stretch his legs.” Picture this: All the people in the gate area came to a completely quiet standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with the Seeing Eye dog! The pilot was even wearing sunglasses. People scattered. They not only tried to change planes, they also were trying to change airlines!

And the Winner Is…

I got my first full-time job, but I could have sworn I was making more money in college while working for my parents as their daughter.

The father of five children had won a toy at a raffle. He called his kids together to ask which one should have the present. “Who is the most obedient?” he asked. “Who never talks back to mother? Who does everything she says?” Five small voices answered in unison. “Okay, dad, you get the toy.”

You Sound Like My Ex

Fixing Your Cat

My First Job

After the honeymoon, the new wife tells her husband, “I think it’s time for you to stop playing golf. In fact, you might as well sell all of your clubs.” The husband replies, “You’re starting to sound like my ex-wife.” His wife says, “I thought you said you’ve never been married before?” The husband says, “I haven’t.”

If you come home like I do and find your cat had his tail removed from fighting, just take your cat to Tesco... They’re the best re-tailer!

My girlfriend and I often laugh about how competitive we are... But I laugh more!

Cure For Lateness

Bob had this problem of getting up late in the morning and was always late for work. After a few weeks of this, his boss was mad and threatened to fire him if he didn’t do something about it. So Bob went to his doctor, who gave him a pill and told him to take it before he went to bed. He got a great night’s sleep and actually beat the alarm in the morning. After a leisurely breakfast, he cheerfully drove to work. “Boss,” he said, “The pill my doctor subscribed me actually worked!” “That’s all fine,” said the boss, “But where were you yesterday?”

The Rocky Mountain Conference

A psychotherapist returned from a conference in the Rocky Mountains, where the delegates spent more time on the icy ski slopes than attending lectures and seminars. When she got back, her husband asked her, “So, how did it go?” “Fine,” she replied, “but I’ve never seen so many Freudians slip.”

Yankee observer

I can spot an innie and an outie belly button on the beach from a mile away... That’s because I graduated with honours from the U.S Navel Academy.

A wise man once said…

There are three kinds of men in this world: some remain single and make wonders happen; some have girlfriends and see wonders happen; and the rest get married and wonder what happened?

The Piano Tuner

Mrs. Smith needed to have her piano tuned so she asked a friend for a recommendation. She then made an appointment with the piano tuner, Mr. Opperknockity. He arrived two days later, tuned the piano satisfactorily, and left. Shortly after that, Mrs. Smith noticed that the piano was terribly out of tune again. She called the tuner to complain about it and to ask for a return visit to solve the problem. However, the tuner replied, “I’m sorry ma’am, but Opperknockity

only tunes once!”

Short and sweet, unlike the editor.

Q: What never asks questions but receives a lot of answers? A: the Telephone. Q: What goes through towns, up and over hills, but doesn’t move? A: The road! Q: Did you hear about the guy who got hit in the head with a can of soda? A: He was lucky it was a soft drink. Q: Why was there thunder and lightning in the lab? A: The scientists were brainstorming! Q: What did Delaware? A: a New Jersey Q: Why did Tony go out with a prune? A: Because he couldn’t find a date! Q: What do you call purple when it is being mean? A: Violent. Q: What did the little mountain say to the big mountain? A: Hi Cliff! Q: Did you hear the one about the geologist? A: He took his wife for granite so she left him Q: What did Winnie The Pooh say to his agent? A: Show me the honey!

Mythology

I’m really ticked that my handmade replica of the Norse god of thunder didn’t win top prize at the Medieval Art and Statue Convention. I guess that makes me a Thor loser.

Competition

Two barbershops were in red-hot competition. One put up a sign advertising haircuts for £7. His competitor put one up that read, “We repair £7 hair cuts!”

Snappy Logo

The crocodile walked into a trendy menswear store, approached the assistant and asked, “Do you have any shirts with pictures of people on the pocket?”

Who’s Boss

A new nurse listened while the doctor was yelling, “Typhoid! Tetanus! Measles!” The new nurse asked another nurse, “Why is he doing that?” The other nurse replied, “Oh, he just likes to call the shots around here.”

Mother

A young man was walking through a supermarket to pick up a few things when he noticed an old lady following him around. Thinking nothing of it, he ignored her and continued on. Finally he went to the checkout line, but she got in front of him. “Pardon me,” she said, “I’m sorry if my staring at you has made you feel uncomfortable. It’s just that you look just like my son, who just died recently.” “I’m very sorry,” replied the young man, “is there anything I can do for you?” “Yes,” she said, “As I’m leaving, can you say ‘Good bye, Mother!’ It would make me feel so much better.” “Sure,” answered the young man. As the old woman was leaving, he called out, “Goodbye, Mother!” As he stepped up to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was £127.50. “How can that be?” he asked, “I only purchased a few things!” “Your mother said that you would pay for her,” said the clerk.

Instructions to the letter

A little boy returned from the grocery store with his mum. While his mum put away the groceries, the little boy opened his box of animal crackers and spread them all over the kitchen table. “What are you doing?” asked his mum. “The box says you shouldn’t eat them if the seal is broken,” said the little boy. “I’m looking for the seal.”

A man had just bought a parrot at an auction after some very spirited bidding.

Play it again

The wife, whose husband has a collection of guitars, was before the judge after smashing every single one of them. The judge asks, “First offender?” She replied, “No, your honour. First a Gibson, second a Fender.”

More Shorts

Q: What did the man say to the wall? A: One more crack like that and I’ll plaster you. Q: What do you get when you cross a fridge with a radio? A: Cool Music Q: Why couldn’t the pirate play cards? A: Because he was sitting on the deck! Q: What’s the difference between bird flu and swine flu? A: If you have bird flu, you need tweetment. If you have swine flu, you need oink-ment. Q: Why did the traffic light turn red? A: You would too if you had to change in the middle of the street! Q: What did one elevator say to the other elevator? A: I think I’m coming down with something! Q: What happened when a long green bean, a tomato and lettuce were in a race? A: The lettuce was ahead, the bean was running and the tomato was trying to ketchup. Q: Why can’t your nose be 12 inches long? A: Because then it would be a foot! Q: What has four wheels and flies? A: A garbage truck! Q: What starts with a P, ends with an E, and has a million letters in it? A: Post Office!

“I suppose that bird talks?” he said to the auctioneer.

Q: What do you call a belt with a watch on it? A: A waist of time Q: What did the blanket say to the bed? A: Don’t worry; I’ve got you covered!

Do try this one at home

A husband is having a beer at the pub with his friends when he sends an email to his wife. “What are you emailing her?” asked one. He reads his message out loud, “Having a beer with the boys. If I’m not home in twenty minutes, read this email again.”

If you can remember the sixties

How come the lifeguard couldn’t save the hippie? He was just too far out man.

Totally topical diets

Since Christmas I have managed to lose 10 pounds. I think a fiver a month to Weight Watchers is fair enough for their advice. I walked in the pub yesterday and I couldn’t help but notice a guy sat at the bar scribbling on some paper and laughing hysterically. “Why are you so happy?” I asked. “My wife’s been on a diet for the last four days, and she’s lost five pounds.” the man replied. “What’s so funny about that?” I asked. “Well,” he says, “I’ve worked out that in four months, she will have disappeared completely!” I’ve decided to make money writing dieting books. I’m told they appeal to a very wide audience.

“Talks!” was the reply…

31

I went on a diet recently, came off drinking and heavy eating. In fourteen days I’ve lost exactly two weeks. A father says to his son, “And what will you do when you grow up to be as big as me?” Son replies, “Diet.” I’ve been doing really well on my diet recently, but the other day I ate a 50p coin. People keep saying to me “You look like you’ve put on half a pound...” Diets. They’re for people who are thick and tired of it. It’s probably not a good sign when you step on your Wii Fit board and it says, “One Player at a time please.” To gain weight: takeaway Pizza. To lose weight: take away Pizza. I’ve nearly finished the pills the doctor gave me to stop me from being so greedy. I want some more. My mate bet me a tenner I couldn’t come up with a good Vegetarian joke... I had a few, but gave him the money there and then. They were all to Quorny... 2nd day of my diet. I’ve lost 7 pounds. I’m gutted; I was going to buy a kebab with that.

A little irony to finish with…

Today, I saw that my ironing board cover was wrinkled. I laughed at the irony. A key ring is a handy little gadget that allows you to lose all your keys at once. A bad workman blames his fools EDIT: *tools. Stupid keyboard. My wife thinks I’m too nosey; at least, that’s what she wrote in her diary and texted to all her mates.

“Who do you think was bidding against you?”
