Konica Minolta and Vpress launch strategic partnership

Konica Minolta and Vpress have announced the launch of a strategic partnership – initially in the UK – that both say will bring massive benefits to print clients. The link-up will also build on Konica Minolta’s acquisition last autumn of Charterhouse, where Vpress already works with the multi-award winning print management company, the recipient of the 2013 Queen’s Award for

Enterprise in International Trade. Customers will be offered established cloud based web2print software called Coreprint, which already processes thousands of orders for 1500 clients using 22 languages worldwide in more than 60 countries. Templates are set up for every print item, which can be accessed online, made ready for print and then fed directly to a printer. This, says Vpress, substantially cuts production costs by dramatically streamlining manual processes, so increasing profits. The service – integrating with production workflows, MIS, CRM or other accounts packages such as Sage, and ERP systems – can be fully managed by Vpress or accessed by the client on a ‘click’ charge basis without using servers. “The market driven decision to formalise into a strategic agreement where customers can enable their businesses through e-procurement is key to a win-win situation for both companies,” said Mark Hinder, Konica Minolta’s Market Development Manager for Production Printing. “This is an important and big step forward in our business. Linking with Vpress enables Konica Minolta to develop a business model where we can offer a low-cost entry web2print solution that is totally scalable for customers, providing additional profitable revenue opportunities for our customers.” “The Coreprint solution is already used by Charterhouse customers. It will enable our customers to benefit their print business and increase profitability through online access, either remotely by computer or via their mobiles. Konica Minolta is keen to capitalise upon what is a major growth area.” Tim Cox, Managing Director of Vpress, said: “This is a cohesive strategy going forward benefiting both companies. We were courted by a number of manufacturers, but Konica Minolta, who we have worked with many times before on projects, was the best fit and is a perfect partner. This digital solutions provider took the medium range printer market by storm and has kept it. As a company, it has a very consultative approach, which is also really important to us. It’s not a case of selling a box – their teams want to learn about their clients’ with business and how and what they can do to help. We are extremely pleased to be working with a company that shares our core values to enable a customer’s business.” He added: “This agreement will also give us a wider platform to demonstrate our capabilities as one of the UK’s leading web2print service provider.” www.konicaminolta.co.uk www.vpress.co.uk

‘Outstanding’ Grade for Roland Academy Walsall College, home of the Roland DG Academy, has been awarded an ‘Outstanding Grade’ following its recent Ofsted inspection. It is the first further education provider in the UK to receive the outstanding grading under Ofsted’s new inspection framework and the grade places the college firmly in the top 10 ten per cent of colleges and other learning institutions in the UK. Says Joe Wigzell, Roland Academy and Creative Centre Manager, Roland DG (UK): “We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Walsall College on being awarded its ‘Outstanding Grade’ from Ofsted. It’s an excellent achievement and a reflection of all the hard work put in

by the college over many years to ensure it offers a wide ranging, relevant and informative educational curriculum focused on students and on results. “The Roland Academy has now been based at Walsall College for seven years and has over this time grown to become a well established part of the curriculum and a loyal partner to the college, educating hundreds of sign makers and printers in the process. The Academy is a core part of our commercial proposition at Roland. We are very proud of it and the contribution it has made to Walsall College’s educational excellence and the up-skilling of our customers and the industry in general.” The Roland Academy offers a range of courses for printers and sign makers looking to either up-skill or refresh their technical and industry knowledge. Ricoh helps printing company expand Faced with a change in the demands of its customers, Yorkshire based commercial printers, Platinum, has transformed its business to offer, not just print but also a broad range of added value marketing services. Ricoh’s Pro C901 production print press has played an important role in helping the company expand its products and services, increase business for its clients, and improve Platinum’s own efficiency and productivity. Platinum is a commercial printer based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Established for 25 years, the company employs 26 staff and has a turnover in excess of £3 million. As well as traditional litho printing, the company offers design, marketing, digital print and direct mail services. This covers a wide range of products such as business stationery, brochures, and booklets, right through to corporate gifts, exhibition stands and website design. The move to broaden the level of its offerings was taken by Platinum a few years ago following a shift in type of service and products customers wanted. Customer expectation was changing from less high volume work to demand for more complex, quality print jobs, with increased levels of personalisation and a faster turnaround. Platinum actively sought to transform its business operations to provide new, added value services. The company now encompasses all aspects of marketing and promotion. Platinum constantly evaluates how it can deliver more new and innovative products and services, and digital printing is an important part of that strategy. Mark Plummer, production director at Platinum Print, says, “We have taken what was a traditional litho printing company and turned it into a business that sells many different kinds of media solutions. We try and encompass all products that have a form of graphical content. The onset of digital printing has helped to focus on delivering products and services that our customers can use for their own sales and marketing.” However, Platinum was being held back by its existing digital printing equipment. The machine was not particularly old, having replaced an earlier digital press, but it lacked the ability to deal with many types of paper stock, and the print quality was not good enough for the high quality colour work Platinum’s customers required. The press was also unreliable, with frequent breakdowns requiring an engineer, particularly when running at high volumes. “It was difficult. We couldn’t expand our digital print work because we were limited by things like the type of paper stock we could print on. And digital print quality was still some way off that of litho. Increasingly, our customers wanted us to use digital print and at relatively high volumes, and it was difficult to meet this need when we knew that the machine just couldn’t handle certain quantities without having to call out an engineer,” says Plummer. Platinum considered almost every high volume digital printer on the market before narrowing the choice down to three suppliers. After careful consideration, the company decided on Ricoh and its Pro C901 production print press as the most cost effective and high quality solution.

“We found that few machines could achieve the quality of finish that the Pro C901 could. Printouts from other equipment looked a bit glossy and still didn’t meet the kind of level of finish you get from litho,” says Plummer. “But the quality and print speeds on the Ricoh press were very good, and we were confident that with the level of service and support that Ricoh offers we’d get a fully reliable solution. With Ricoh we felt we would get the entire package competitively.” Platinum has deployed one of Ricoh’s most advanced print presses providing more flexibility, faster printing speeds, and superior print quality as part of a Ricoh Production Print solution. The Ricoh solution also comprises print consultancy services and support from local engineers. The company has been particularly pleased with the exceptional print quality. “There are certain jobs where even I sometimes have to look twice — and I’ve got over 25 years’ experience in the litho market. Sometimes I can’t actually tell the difference without getting out a magnifying glass, which is pretty unbelievable in all honesty. We are used to printing very high quality work and when you see what the Ricoh digital press can do it’s quite astounding,” says Plummer. The Ricoh Production Print solution has helped Platinum to implement its business strategy to expand its portfolio and add value to its services through digital print. The combination of reliability, high quality output and the ability to handle an increased variety of print stock has given Platinum the confidence to take on more complex, and high volume, colour digital print work. By improving the quality, scope and reliability of its digital print capability, Ricoh has enabled Platinum to offer customers a much wider ranges of services that go beyond print and into more creative, value-add marketing services. For example, Platinum was able to help an existing customer, a holiday company, maximise their sales potential using the Ricoh production press. Having previously just printed brochures with each customer’s name and address, the holiday company now personalises each individual brochure, with images changing in relevance to the customer and their previous purchases and interests, in print runs of up to 30,000 at a time. Ricoh has trained several members of staff how to use and carry out simple maintenance on the Ricoh press. Now, instead of a dedicated print operator having to babysit a print device through each job, there are several members of staff able to operate the Ricoh press. And once calibrated first thing in the morning, the Ricoh printer can be left more or less on its own. Plummer says, “The Ricoh production press has integrated so well into our business, it is now like part of the fixtures and fittings. The main thing the Ricoh solution has done for us is support the expansion of our service portfolio. We’re not just a printer anymore. Customers come to us for printing, but we can then teach them how to maximise sales and marketing using the different media and methods we are able to employ.” www.ricoh.co.uk

Caldera printed fabric with VisualTEX+ Pioneering software developer Caldera has once again highlighted its innovation in print technology at this year’s FESPA Digital show with the launch of its latest product, VisualTEX+. Created as an easy to use entry level solution for PSPs looking to diversify into printed fabrics, as well as an indispensable tool for pattern designers, VisualTEX+ was a highlight of this year’s FESPA in London. With custom designed textiles in higher demand than ever, the potential for digital printers to capitalise on this market is huge, and with VisualTEX+ high margin markets like interior

décor are put within easy reach. VisualTEX+ comprises two key features to help PSPs break into the lucrative arena of digitally-printed fabrics: Step&Repeat, which streamlines the process of creating an accurately repeating pattern, and a Custom Inkset tool for creating and managing new inksets. Harnessing Caldera’s in-depth technical knowledge of digital printing technologies, VisualTEX+ gives designers an accessible yet

powerful textile printing solution. Where in the past side by side pattern repetition on textiles has been difficult to produce cleanly, VisualTEX+’s Step&Repeat module automatically optimises the pattern layout by applying a shift, pivoting or inverting to ensure precise pattern matching. The Colorations plug-in for Adobe Photoshop component of the new VisualTEX+ software simplifies the process of creating multiple colour options from the same pattern. For pattern designers, this feature presents a compelling opportunity to increase revenue by offering a single design in a whole spectrum of colour schemes, and for printers, Colorations is an ideal tool for the effortless creation of swatch books or printed fabric samples in multiple colours. www.caldera.com

We want to help them improve their performance by presenting them with solutions and expertise that get straight to the point and make an immediate impact.” Dave McGuiness, Kodak UK Marketing Manager, adds: “It is a unique platform to meet with our customers and demonstrate real working solutions and production efficiencies in a far more hands-on and relaxed atmosphere than at exhibitions. Print designer wins CreaseStream machine Who can crease the most greetings cards in 60 seconds using the hand cranked, manually operated CreaseStream mini and win the £1,500 unit outright? This was the challenge set by CreaseStream LLP to co-exhibitors and visitors alike that attended the recent Progressive Greetings Live 2013 show, held at the Business Centre in Islington, London. The competition was tight until Katrina Wight stepped up to take her turn, and having confessed that she had never won anything of real value, she didn’t fancy her chances — yet her score of 47 beat her nearest rival by a clear seven cards. Katrina, who specialises in creating her own hand drawn illustrations of dogs and cats and adapting them for her brand of greeting cards, was delighted with her triumph, she commented; “I use a scalpel to crease my cards, which works ok, but the CreaseStream produces a better result and is much, much faster, enabling me to create products that are more cost effective.” Katrina presently runs her company under her name, Katrina R Wight, but is expanding fast and is looking to change this soon. As well as being fun, Katrina’s products are of high quality and integrity, one of the principal aims of her business is to be environmentally conscious – all of her products are currently made using 100% recycled card and paper. Graham Harris, the founder of CreaseStream LLP was delighted that such a gifted person with artistic ability and strong views about the environment should win his machine, he explained; “There is some synergy between us, we also work hard to produce something unique and creative that is less harmful to our environment, many of our products require no electrical input, yet can produce more output than those that rely on such appliances.” The CreaseStream mini range starts with the manual hand fed version, the user simply feeds materials from 75-400gsm and up to 52cm in width, whilst turning the handle to drive the stock through the tooling shafts. The secret is in the patented rubber creasing devices that mount the shafts to create the quality finish customers require, the gentle application isn’t destructive and it prevents the common problem of cracking when folding is implemented. Optional micro-perforating devices can be set to give users more scope to produce a wider range of finishing applications. The Quick-feed version is supplied with a clever sheet feeding mechanism that speeds up output to an average of 3,000 sheets per hour. The handle is discarded on the Auto-feed version as it is motorised and will easily produce over 4,000 sheets per hour. During the show, the CreaseStream team set out to demonstrate how their innovative series of cost effective creasing solutions could meet the needs of card designers and buyers that may be looking for ways of improving their finished products, and the competition they ran helped to generate invaluable feedback. According to Graham, creative designers fall into three categories, they use basic scalpels or rulers to score their card stock, they buy in pre-scored substrates or they outsource their artwork so their local printers take care of everything. Because of the growing popularity of card creation coupled with the increase in digital print processing, the problems of cracking are becoming more evident, and there lies an opportunity. He feels that there aren’t enough simple and straight forward creasing solutions in the market to accommodate designers who cannot justify the cost of an automatic machine, he explains; “Those who produce greetings cards have always improvised using basic hand tools that are available through craft shops. Why would they want to pay thousands of pounds for something that is more relevant to the high street printer? Our rotary method of creasing lends itself to this market because it is faster and more accurate than most of the “clumsy” types of desk top solutions in the lower price bracket. We are partly there and can address some of the market, and now we are working to develop something to suit the majority, this show has taught us a lot.” To see videos of the CreaseStream machines in action, go to www.creasestream.com www.technifold.com

Based in the North West of England, Venture Productions specialises in digital photographic printing, handmade framing and the assembly of contemporary artwork. With over 12 years experience the company, which is a member of the Fine Art Guild, has helped artists, illustrators and photographers from all over the UK and abroad to reproduce and frame their artwork. The ‘Digigraphie by Epson’ certification enables artists and photographers to add exclusive value to their limited edition prints, by using the very best printing technology together with a wide range of certified media, therefore guaranteeing exceptional, repeatable quality. The result of many years of research by Epson, Digigraphie is made possible by both the technical performance of Epson Stylus Pro printers and the quality of its range of UltraChrome pigment inks which give vivid and long lasting prints. Each print is embossed with the ‘Digigraphie by Epson’ seal which confirms that it has been created following a specific digital process. “The Digigraphie seal of approval gives our customers confidence that we are using the best materials and processes to produce their artwork, and ensure the best image and printing quality,” says Paul Cash, Head of Purchasing and Quality Assurance, Venture Productions. “We have had a positive response to the Digigraphie programme and our customers appreciate the uniqueness of the certification.” “We bought the printer based on Epson’s reputation as market leaders in inkjet technology, and soon after became a Certified Digigraphie Lab,” says Paul. “Many of our fine art photographers and artists want to print limited editions using inkjet technology and this certificate gives them the opportunity to add value and exclusivity to their work.”

The Epson Stylus Pro 9900 roll fed printer, with a resolution up to 2880 x 1440 dpi, uses Epson’s UltraChrome HDR 11 colour ink set to provide a wide colour gamut, the smoothest of gradation and absolute control over the tone and hue of black and white prints thanks to the three densities of black ink and an advanced printer driver. Nick White, business manager – proGraphics, Epson UK, says: “For professional artists and photographers it is essential that they remain in control of all their reproductions to protect the value and legacy of their work. Putting the sing into print Talking Print, the UK-based supplier of audio and video embedded promotional print products, exhibited its latest marketing projects at Marketing Week Live last month at Kensington Olympia, London. Within the promotional merchandise section, Talking Print explained how brands can benefit from its end to end, hassle free service and showcased recent campaigns delivered to companies such as Dairylea, Ben & Jerry’s and Paddy Power. The project for Dairylea comprised sound chips and innovative light activated packaging, which would “moo” when the top prize winning packs were opened. As well as thousands of light sensitive fridge cows for runners up that “moo” when a fridge is opened. Talking Print also offered a turnkey ‘partner’ based service for this project, including production, logistics and quality assurance. Ben & Jerry’s also featured a mooing sound in personalised audio cards sent to Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) on Valentine’s Day, in conjunction with The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). The sound was triggered by a pulley on each card, which “moos” on opening. This raised the critical importance of tackling animal cruelty across the globe to MEPs and urged them to support the cause in an innovative and creative way. The possibilities with promotional marketing are endless with Talking Print’s expertise, from the design and functionality of the product to the logistics and delivery. The sound modules are versatile and can be applied to virtually any item. For example, in the recent series of the Great British Menu, Talking Print supplied the ‘cluck’ for Tom Aiken’s winning chicken dish for the final banquet. Internal marketing campaigns are also within Talking Print portfolio, on

show will be Paddy Power’s light-hearted, neighing horse meat ‘recipe books’, which the company distributed with its annual report and accounts. Triggered by a pulley, the Black Beauty sound track accompanies neighs on opening of the recipe book. David Hyams, co-founder of Talking Print, comments: “Marketing Week Live is a really exciting platform to showcase how marketers can improve brand awareness with the integration of audio and visual promotional marketing. We create unique printed products that can be produced by adding a sound, light or video module and can meet virtually any client requirement. A lot of companies have great interactive ideas and don’t know how to go about it creating the product; we can come up with cost effective, hassle free solutions.” Talking Print is a fast track production service for the inclusion of high quality sound or video cards in printed marketing material incorporating moving pictures, spoken messages, light and jingles into numerous promotional situations including in-store displays, gifts, packaging, direct mail, greeting cards and brochures. Bespoke video brochures remain the company¹s leading and most popular product. With no minimum or maximum order quantities, and no restrictions on where the video can be placed and how it can be used, video screens could feature in almost anything. Adding video to print creates a real ‘wow’ effect that cannot be matched. Since the company was founded in 2011, Talking Print has developed a string of successful multimedia campaigns for several leading national corporations in the retail, food and beverage and leisure sectors. www.talkingprint.com

Xeikon introduces groundbreaking ICE toner Xeikon, an innovator in digital colour printing technology, announces the launch of a new toner for its digital label presses. The ICE toner will be demonstrated at Labelexpo Europe in Brussels, and will be available for customers as from Q4-2013. Part of the Xeikon Label Suite, the new toner is ideal for heat sensitive substrates including PE facestock (polyethylene) and thermal labels. This will open up the potential for a whole range of new applications. PE has a good flexibility and pliability, making it widely used for the surface of packaging that is used on regular and irregular containers that have to be kept away from humidity and chemical solvents. Typical examples include tubes and bottles which need to be squeezable, or bags that need to be pressed. “Until now, dry toner technology was not expected to be able to work with substrates for these types of jobs. Following requests from our user base, Xeikon specifically developed the ICE toner to be suited for heat sensitive materials. We pushed back the boundaries in toner development and digital label printing. ICE toner is undoubtedly again a real breakthrough in dry toner technology driven by Xeikon,” says Lode Deprez, Vice President Consumables & Process Group at Xeikon. ICE toner is based on the proven Xeikon QA technology, bringing the renowned benefits including top printing quality, high lightfastness, top opaque white quality and being able to print on conventional substrates without the need of specific priming. ICE toner will run on all new and installed Xeikon 3000 Series digital presses, and has already undergone extensive tests in the field with a number of existing customers. “The new ICE toner is tailored to the needs of our label customers. Xeikon listens to its customers, and has a team dedicated to product development in this area of the market. ICE toner has been designed to perform at the right temperature, and has been engineered to perfection for this additional demand, delivering only the very best in Xeikon quality. With ICE toner digital label production has just become even more versatile and powerful,” adds Filip Weymans, Director Segment Marketing and Business Development Labels and Packaging at Xeikon. Enfocus announces Connect 11 for perfect PDFs Creating a PDF from most applications is not a huge challenge but ensuring that it is a press ready PDF for professional output still is. Connect 11 is designed to bridge the gap between creative and production professionals by helping designers deliver high quality jobs right the first time, with no IT or PDF skills required. This saves valuable time in production and helps avoid costly mistakes. “What’s unique about Connect 11 is that it addresses the most common problems with PDF files at the source – on the designer’s workstation, where they can be easily fixed,” said Michael Reiher, Connect product manager at Enfocus. “By controlling the overall PDF creation process, and tying it to the correction and preflight capabilities of the builtin PitStop technology, common issues such as missing fonts, low resolution images and other common problems are easily addressed before the PDF files are received for production,” continued Reiher. Connect with quality - Enfocus Connect creates easy to use applets called Connectors, that sit on the user’s desktop and which have all the necessary settings contained within them. Connectors can be created that handle: • One-click perfect PDF creation through Adobe Creative Suite or the print option of any other application, using Adobe Normalizer technology built into the Connector • Automatic PDF correction and enhancement based on Enfocus PitStop Action Lists • PDF verification using Enfocus PitStop Preflight Profiles • Custom job ticket generation to help automate downstream processes • Secure, completely automatic delivery of PDF or any other file type to (S) FTP, HTTP, email, or directly into an Enfocus Switch automated flow Connectors created with Connect can be easily customised to provide all of the features possible, or just a small sub-set. If necessary they can be set up by skilled professionals and then handed over to any user.

Flexible solutions for all creative professionals - Connect 11 will be delivered in two editions. Connect YOU is a highly affordable single user product for creative individuals. Connect ALL is for creative organisations, as well as print service providers that can use Connect to generate Connectors that they can supply to their outside clients. In that case customers can only use the Connector to deliver files to their service provider. Both versions share the same functionality and have the same code base. However Connect ALL can create Connectors that can optionally be custom branded and freely distributed to outside clients, whereas Connect YOU is limited to making Connectors that run on a single workstation. Connect YOU replaces the long established Enfocus Instant PDF, which is widely used to create, verify and upload PDFs and other files. Connect YOU offers significantly greater functionality, including the ability to generate PDFs from any application, as well as easy applet operations and compatibility with the latest operating systems and Adobe Creative Suite versions. Connect ALL replaces PitStop Connect by offering a new level of PDF creation and quality control, along with job delivery automation. Full details of the Connect product line can be found on the Enfocus website. In addition, Enfocus will hold a series of free webinars introducing the new product family. Schedules and guidelines on how to sign up for the webinars are available on the Enfocus website: http://www.enfocus.com/ en/webinars. Availability and prices - Connect 11 will be available in the 3rd quarter of 2013. Connect YOU will be available for €99. Enfocus Instant PDF customers will be made a special offer and can purchase or pre-order the new Connect YOU product for only €79 until September 30th, 2013 as of today. Users having purchased or upgraded to Instant PDF 10 since January 1st, 2013 to the ship date will be entitled to a free Connect YOU when available. Connect ALL will be available for €2,999. Users having purchased or upgraded to PitStop Connect 10 since January 1st, 2013 to the ship date will be entitled to a free Connect ALL when available. For more information on Connect 11 or how to purchase, please visit your local Enfocus reseller, or Enfocus at sales@enfocus.com.

Duplo launches Eurofold TCF-375 Duplo launched the new Eurofold TCF-375 crease, fold and perf system at a special three day open house at its Surrey showroom. As well as creasing and folding, the TCF-375 is capable of stop-perfing in two directions enabling the production of complex promotional and direct mail applications in one process. The TCF-375 is essentially a Eurofold CF-375 creaser/folder connected directly to the Eurofold CP-375 creaser/perforator. The system utilises four individually controllable perforating heads to perforate along the sheet enabling complex on/ off/on perforating without the need for a cylinder. The machine can be programmed in a matter of minutes and runs at up to 5,000 sheets per hour depending on the number of operations required

on each sheet. Duplo showed the machine at its horse racing themed ‘Finishing First Open Days’ in Addlestone, Surrey. It partnered with finishing equipment specialists Renz and Vivid to give customers the opportunity to see a wide variety of post-press equipment under one roof. Marc Legge, Marketing Manager at Duplo explained, “It is expensive for printers to be out of the office so we like to host events like this to give them maximum value for their time. We demonstrated 40 different finishing solutions in a relaxed environment where we matched products to business needs. These events are there to help printers to work efficiently, plan for the future and keep up to date with new technology.”

As well as the kit, visitors to the show were given the opportunity to show off their horse racing knowledge and the best tipster over the three days won a pair of tickets to the final day of Royal Ascot 2013. www.printfinishingfirst.com

HP transforms large format printing HP has introduced two web-connected printers that transform the large format printing process with a new ergonomic design, delivering an improved user experience for design professionals. The new HP Designjet T920 and T1500 ePrinter series are designed to help busy workgroups complete work efficiently and meet deadlines by printing correctly from the start with true print previews and delivering fast, high quality prints. Additionally, these devices help users on the go to access, view and print projects from the cloud so they can collaborate easily with remote teams. HP designed the 36-inch devices based on extensive engagement with users early in the development process. Users proposed designs that addressed the pain points they suffer before, during and after the printing process. From this input, HP identified an output tray and true front-roll media loading as key areas for enhancement. The integrated output stacking tray on the devices change the way users collect and organise large format output. The integrated output stacking tray is built in on top of the device and delivers flat, collated prints. This new output system improves productivity by reducing time spent searching through and organising printouts, and it eliminates the need for users to bend down to collect prints. Additionally, the new industrial design presents a flat surface on top of the devices, creating a media review table for easy, quick checking of printed plans. Built for against the wall operation, the true front-roll loading feature allows users to load media easily, even while seated. In addition to these new design features, the HP Designjet T920 and T1500 ePrinters deliver the fastest print speeds in the market.

Improved user experience based on customer-driven innovation — For small to medium workgroups, the compact HP Designjet T920 ePrinter eliminates output clutter with an integrated stacking tray that collates up to 50 sheets of A4- to A0-size media. True front-roll loading and automatic paper roll alignment make media handling simple. The device operates at speeds up to 21 seconds per A1/D print and is equipped with 32 GB of virtual memory space to process complex files easily and deliver faster prints. Ideal for multiuser environments, the HP Designjet T1500 ePrinter is equipped with two rolls and features automatic alignment and smart switching capabilities to handle multiple jobs on different media types and sizes. Doubling the processing power over its predecessor, the HP Designjet T1500 ePrinter uses a parallel processor with a 320GB hard drive to print multiple files simultaneously. The HP Designjet T920 and T1500 ePrinters feature an intuitive, full colour touch screen that gives users added control with the ability to manage job queues, track print costs and view true print previews. With six original HP inks and the HP printhead, the new series can produce dark blacks, true neutral grays, vivid colours and sharp lines. Pricing and availability — The HP Designjet T920 and T1500 ePrinter series are expected to be available worldwide beginning on July 8 for estimated list prices of 3.650€ and 5.650€, respectively. Additional information about the HP Designjet portfolio is available at www.hp.com/go/DesignjetSpring2013 and www.hp.com/go/designjet. Canon launches ROI calculator to help PSPs profit Responding to the findings of the latest Canon Insight Report on print buyers perceptions of the value of print, Canon UK has developed a new measurement tool to help Print Service Providers (PSPs) to calculate the return on investment (ROI) for specific print applications. The Insight Report – entitled The Bigger Picture – Your customers’ view of the value of print – found that while 87% of organisations across Europe confirmed that print plays an important part in their communications strategy, only one in ten have a formal process for evaluating the effectiveness of the print they commissioned. The reasons cited by print buyers for not doing so were that the value of print was too hard to quantify and that they didn’t know how to measure it effectively. Consequently, Canon has looked to provide a solution in the form of its new print-centric ROI tool. Canon held a focus group with PSPs, the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) and print buyers in order to gain industry input on how to measure the ROI of print. This was combined with the findings from Canon’s latest research during development of the solution that could begin to help PSPs demonstrate the value of print to their customers. The easy to use tool enables PSPs to estimate

the potential ROI of a campaign involving print for existing and prospective customers. With marketing budgets tighter than ever, the measurement tool offers PSPs the potential to help their customers enhance the performance and cost effectiveness of their print applications. It also serves as a proof point that PSPs can use to support their service offerings by presenting customers with the costs, results and benefits of previous customer success stories. Powered by Microsoft Excel , the ROI tool enables PSPs to profile a customer and their planned campaign, setting out clear aims and objectives. PSPs can determine what application(s) would be best for the customer to use to meet their goals. They can then calculate the potential ROI for the customer on promotional (such as

direct mail), multi-channel (campaigns involving print alongside other forms of communication), transactional (bills) and consumer (such as books, magazines and photobooks) applications. Each ROI calculation is supported by relevant market insights and research into each specific print application. This information is derived from numerous independent sources to provide PSPs with a valuable resource of statistical data applicable to their customers businesses. Andy Harris, European & UK Graphic Arts Customer Marketing, Professional Print Solutions, Canon Europe, comments: “We developed this measurement tool as part of an ongoing process to help answer many of the questions raised by print buyers in the latest Canon Insight Report, which looked at their view of the value of print. We wanted to provide our customers a means by which to analyse and measure the effectiveness of print applications in their campaigns.” He explains: “We believe this is the first tool of its kind in measuring the ROI of these specific print applications. This is the first step as we look to collate feedback from the market in order to evolve the tool. We will continue to refine and adapt the tool in response to the requirements of printers and their customers. We are looking to drive the debate on ROI, while in the process provide our customers with a way to demonstrate the effectiveness of print to their customers – ultimately helping them to grow their business.” For further information, please visit http:// www.canon-europe.com/roi/

FESPA firsts

As the doors to the show close we will be following up on all the new kit aimed at our Quick Print market. Print service provider products are included in this first report with more to follow in the usual QPP mixed media channels.

Epson demonstrated SureColor inkjet printer versatility Epson showcased the versatility and productivity of its latest SureColor wide-format inkjet printers.Visitors to the Epson booth were able to browse a wide selection of POS, signage, sports apparel, decorated giftware, gadgets and interior décor applications printed onto a broad range of substrates. Over the last 18 months Epson has launched eight new generation large format SureColor inkjet printers designed to deliver maximum quality, productivity, flexibility and low Total Cost of Ownership. These printers were demonstrated together for the first time and included three 64-inch SureColor SC-S wide format printers; the 44-inchSureColor SC-T printer; and two SureColor SC-F dye-sublimation printers (44 and 64inch). Epson displayed sportswear and soft signage, alongside customised giftware, gadgets and décor items whichdemonstrated the flexibility of the SureColor SC-F6000 and SC-F7000 dye sublimation printers. These are the first dye sublimation printers from Epson and the first in this sector in which every component, from ink and printhead, to printer chassis and optional accessories, are all designed and manufactured by one company. As a result, quality, performance (with production speeds over 50sqm) and reliability are all optimised for maximum productive uptime and profit. These printers use Epson UltraChrome DS ink, a specially developed new aqueous ink, which produces outstanding images with vibrant colours, intense blacks, sharp contours and smooth gradations. Dye sublimation is ideal for printing and transferring scratch resistant, photographic quality images onto a wide range of polyester coated substrates which are difficult to print onto directly e.g. aluminium, steel,

plastics, MDF boards, ceramic tiles, etc. As a result print service providers can not only expand their range of products, but also develop new creative value added applications. A variety of high impact, high quality and durable POS, signage, and wallpaper graphics were printed by three 64-inch SureColor SC-S printer models offering a choice of productivities and from 4 -10 colours including white and metallic. They printed onto a range of materials, including vinyl, window film and recyclable stock. The 44-inch, four colour SureColor SC-T7000 with UltraChrome XD ink is ideal for applications where speed and economy are paramount, such as CAD, GIS, custom banners, presentations and indoor signage. The printer is fastest in its class and features ‘PRESTIGE for Epson’ software which gives users a large selection of pre-defined layouts, including themed graphics for fashion, groceries, travel, toys and more, making it ideal for short term promotions. www.epson.co.uk

European Debut of Mimaki UJV500-160

Mimaki’s new UJV500-160 UV printer made its European debut at the show. The UJV500-160 features energy saving LED curing with long lasting LED bulbs, and brand new inks. “One of the more exciting aspects of this printer,” says Mike Horsten, General Manager, Marketing of Mimaki EMEA, “is the joint development with 3M of our new LUS-200UV inks. When these inks are applied onto 3M media and installed using 3M guidelines, they carry the prestigious 3M MCS warranty, widely recognised as the industry’s most comprehensive finished graphics warranty. It covers fading, cracking, peeling and other aspects of graphic performance. We are excited to be partnering with 3M in the introduction of these warranted inks, which will be available this summer” In addition to its fast throughput, cost effective and environmentally friendly LED curing and 3M warranted inks, the UJV500-160 delivers a printed product that is dry and immediately ready for the next step in the process. LUS-200 inks are flexible and are ideal for applications with curved surfaces such as vehicle wraps and fleet graphics where stretching could crack other inks. “We are also very excited to announce the availability of white ink (LUS-150) for roll-to-roll printing with the UJV500-160 in the September 2013 timeframe,” adds Horsten. “This will enhance the value of the printer even more, making it possible to create truly vibrant prints on transparent substrates using an undercoating of white ink. Our RasterLink6 RIP already

July/August 2013 | QUICK PRINT PRO | SHOW REVIEW | 19

supports the deposition of three layers of ink in one pass, including a base layer of white ink, to allow faithful reproduction of the natural beauty of colours printed on transparent media for applications like window graphics and backlit signage.” Another Mimaki making an appearance was the JV400-SUV, the prototype of which appeared at FESPA 2012. “Since its introduction at FESPA last year, the JV400 series of wide format printers has been installed at printers around the globe and has been recognised with several prestigious awards,” says Mike Horsten. “The newest member of the JV400 family is the JV400-SUV, which uses Solvent-UV curable inks and delivers very high quality output with vibrant colours and excellent outdoor durability”

The JV400-130/160SUV prints in four colours (CMYK) at speeds of up to 18 square metres per hour in draft mode. This truly unique printer combines the flexibility of solvent with the durability of UV-cured inks using innovative Mimaki inks developed specifically for this printer. In the printing process, the solvent component is absorbed by the ink-receiving layer of the media and the pigment is settled on to the media. The printed ink is then cured with a special UV light process, resulting in a smooth, high gloss appearance, which simulates coating, yet maintains the bright colours expected of a solvent printer. UV curing also results in strong resistance to scratching and weather. Prints exit the printer completely dry, ready for immediate post-processing. Mimaki is distributed in the UK & Ireland by Hybrid Services Ltd and its national sales manager, John de la Roche comments, “Availability of the new Mimaki JV400-SUV is a very exciting announcement for us to make. Interest from our resellers and prospective customers is already strong, so we have looked forward to showing visitors this new technology at the exhibition.” Mimaki also showed its RasterLink6 RIP with the JV400-SUV, as well as with other printers being demonstrated at the show. The RasterLink6 RIP offers an intuitive single window approach for selection of all options and easily converts special colours to Pantone colours and CMYK matching to ensure colour integrity. Users can measure a target colour with an optional colorimeter and use RasterLink6’s Colour Picker System to accurately reproduce those targeted colours. More details about Mimaki products including its full range of printers and cutting plotters can be found at www.hybridservices.co.uk.

HP Expands and Rebrands Its Latex Print Technology

HP expanded its industry leading portfolio of HP Latex Printing Technologies with the introduction of the HP Latex 3000 Printer which made its worldwide debut at the show. HP also announced the rebranding of its HP Designjet and Scitex latex printers and supplies. The new sub-brand for these offerings is HP Latex, demonstrating the strategic importance of latex to the HP Large Format Graphics portfolio.

HP Latex Printing Technologies were introduced in 2008 as a water based alternative to solvent ink technologies. Since then, more than 15,000 HP Latex printers have been shipped worldwide and more than 100 million square metres have been printed with HP Latex Inks. HP expects these numbers to triple by 2016, with the number of latex printed pages growing rapidly while the number of solvent printed pages simultaneously declines by as much as 33 per cent. “Industrial print service providers constantly battle increasing competition along with shrinking timelines and budgets for big projects in this buyers’ market,” said Xavier Garcia, vice president and general manager, Large Format Sign and Display Division, HP. “As a leader in large format printing, HP is offering latex solutions that give our customers a unique advantage to cost effectively address these challenges with new levels of productivity, quality and application versatility.” Creating a competitive advantage for high volume PSPs, the HP Latex 3000 Printer offers broader media versatility, including heat sensitive substrates, with the HP Latex Optimizer. This new ink solution ensures consistent image quality at high speeds as well as efficient curing at lower temperatures and with less energy than previous HP Latex solutions. Third generation HP 881 Latex Inks also provide a scratch resistance comparable to hard solvent inks on certain substrates, making them ideal for applications including retail displays, outdoor advertising, vehicle graphics and interior décor. The printer’s increased production capacity lets high volume customers meet tight deadlines, producing 830 ft2/hr (77 m2/hr) of indoor applications and 1,290 ft2/hr (120 m2/hr) of outdoor applications) Standard carbon fibre, dual roll spindles also help reduce media loading times and the need for operator intervention. The HP Scitex Print Care proactive maintenance scheduler, along with automated diagnostics and alerts, helps customers keep their printers running smoothly. Additionally, bundled HP On-site Uptime Parts Kits, HP Ramp-up Service and HP Customer Care Programs help assure productivity and profitability. Demonstrating the strategic importance of latex to the HP Large Format Graphics portfolio, HP is creating a sub-brand to help customers more easily identify the best HP Latex solution for their shop size and application needs. HP Latex Printing Technologies now include: • The HP Latex 260 Printer, formerly the HP Designjet L26500 Printer • The HP Latex 280 Printer, formerly the HP Designjet L28500 Printer • The HP Latex 600 Printer, formerly the HP Scitex LX600 Industrial Printer • The HP Latex 820 Printer, formerly the HP Scitex LX820 Industrial Printer • The HP Latex 850 Printer, formerly the HP Scitex LX850 Industrial Printer • The HP Latex 3000 Printer HP Latex inks and supplies also will be rebranded to reflect the updated product naming. The HP Latex 3000 Printer is expected to be available worldwide on Aug. 15 More information about the latest additions to the HP Latex portfolio is available at www.hp.com/go/signanddisplaylaunch2013 and www. hp.com/go/latex.

New double sided Matrix Laminator from Vivid

Vivid Laminating Technologies used FESPA for the world premiere of its newest addition to their popular Matrix laminating system range. The Leicestershire based designer and manufacturer of laminating systems has created the Matrix MX-530 Duplex, a modular variant which retrofits to the multilingual MX-530. It allows printers to laminate on both sides of the printed sheet at the same time. Their Product Manager Bruce Cozens explains, “We’ve designed the new 19

20 | SHOW REVIEW | QUICK PRINT PRO | July/August 2013

system to save digital and litho printers even more time. Rather than laminating one side of the print, turning the stock over and laminating the other side, now printers can laminate both sides at exactly the same time, literally halving the time it takes to laminate two sides of the sheet”. Vivid launched the MF-530 Auto-Feeder as a retrofit option for their Matrix MX-530 laminator in November and it has been a runaway success for the company. Bruce continued “We wanted to build on the success and buzz created by the Auto-Feeder introduction by now offering an upgraded model to the end user. The Matrix is now the best selling single sided laminating system in Europe and we’re confident that with the new model, it can also take the crown for double sided systems too”. Vivid state that the Matrix systems are simple to use and are incredibly cost effective, requiring no outsourcing to print finishers. “In today’s marketplace, so many customers are demanding a faster turnaround for their prints” says Bruce “Business cards, menus and other double sided work can now be laminated faster, yet still with the same quality and finish you would expect from the market leading Matrix range”. Vivid exhibited the new system, along with a wide range of laminating and finishing products The complete Matrix MX-530 Duplex system will be available in the autumn at a recommended retail price of £9950. The modular retrofit Duplex system has a recommended retail price of £2200, also available in the autumn. For more information visit www.vivid-online.com or call 0845 1 30 40 50.

Direct to garment printing at FESPA

Direct to garment printing may have only been around for a few years but the progress DTG Digital has made is testimony to how seriously they take this subject. At the forefront of the industry for much of the time DTG Digital and Impression Technology Europe have been responsible for a large number of the major breakthroughs in this process. Direct to garment though was always seen as a small business solution and separate to screen print. In general screen print was seen as the production platform for large orders whilst direct to garment handled the smaller numbers. With the introduction of the M Series DTG Digital has bridged that gap and produced a machine that can handle large orders just as easily as small ones. The ‘M Series’ currently consists of two models the M2 and the M4 with both machines capable of handling industrial quantities. The M2 is the smaller machine, although it has to be said that it is still a substantial piece of equipment, with a maximum print area of 610mm x 1200mm. The print bed is very flexible and can take an assortment of platens that can, for instance, be easily and quickly switched between a double platen set-up, for printing two shirts at

the same time, and a single large print holder. It shares the same print engine as its larger brother, the M4, which, interestingly, was developed specifically for the purpose of printing direct to garments. This is unusual in itself as the majority of machines on the market make use of a print engine that already existed for document printing. This inevitably meant compromises but, with the M Series, this is no longer the case. The larger of the machines, the M4, is similar in looks but can be easily identified by its larger print bed and the enclosed floor standing base which forms an integral part of the build. The larger bed on this machine is capable of handling four standard platens at the same time and delivers amazing production figures. When converted to a single print bed you have the ability to print large textiles, such as table cloths, making the machine the ultimate in flexibility. Apart from the print engine these machines both also utilise the newly developed iQ Interweave which has revolutionised the way dots are printed onto the surface of the product. By using this new method the machines have the ability to produce high quality prints at a lower resolution without the often seen problem of ‘banding’ and remember, lower resolution means shorter print times which means higher productivity. Both models are eight channel allowing for dual CMYK or, the more standard four white plus CMYK, and both use a Piezo print head with 180 nozzles per channel. The M Series is different to any other printer in this field and achieves that link between direct to garment and screen print. Yes, it can handle large orders but it has to be remembered that this machine is also at home producing ‘one-offs’ giving it unparalleled flexibility. Whether you are a screen printer or a supplier of small order print work the M Series machines have to be a consideration. For more information visit: www.impressiontechnologyeurope.com

22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | QUICK PRINT PRO | July/August 2013

Keeping it in Focus To the surprise of Martin Christie and many others it was announced that the annual photographic exhbition, Focus on Imaging held in March at the NEC, would, after twenty four years, close for good. It would not be sold on, repackaged or renamed. Just closed.

Of course the part time pundits jumped to the immediate conclusion that it was the inevitable result of a changing market, much like the demise of high street retailers like Jessops. But that was far too short sighted and simplistic. Having been to possibly half of its two dozen events over the years, I have always been a fan, and thought it had survived the difficult transition from film to digital quite well. Many of the old names remained, like Ilford and Kodak, even though the products had changed, and new ones took the floor space vacated by traditional exhibitors. Certainly this year’s show looked full and busy. Attendance may have been down eight per cent, but that’s hardly a dramatic fall in these straightened times, and the aisles still looked packed. On the day I went you needed to make full use of your elbows to view some of the more popular exhibits. Some big names were not there in person, but most of their product and services were on display and on sale, with many retailers competing head on with internet prices, or even special offers below web deals. So there has to be more to the demise of Focus than the economic climate, and the loss of exhibitors and visitors that has been the death rattle of several recent trade shows in the print industry. One of the contributory factors is likely to be the venue. The NEC is a vast commercial complex and notoriously uncompromising on pricing of rental and services when it holds a complete monopoly on everything that moves within the confines of its site. Not only the halls, but everything from a sausage to an electrical plug is charged at a premium. Potential exhibitors, on the other hand, like everyone else in the competitive world, have to compromise on price and profit margin to survive or justify increasingly tight budgets. The organiser, who has to rent the space from the venue, then sell the portions on to the exhibitor, is therefore caught in the middle of a financial dilemma between a cost that is not negotiable and a price that is. There is always an incentive on an exhibitor to hold on to a potential booking until as late as possible to ensure the best possible price, but until the organiser can be sure of sufficient sales,

there’s no certainty the revenue will meet the bills. Of course the organiser has additional revenue from ticket sales of visitors, but without sufficient number and quality of exhibitors, there’s no guarantee of that either. So it may just be that Focus on Imaging has fallen victim, not to the changing digital image market, but to the general business pressure of fixed costs versus flexible revenue. Or perhaps it’s just that after twenty four fairly successful years, organiser Mary Walker has just simply had enough of the juggling match and has walked away to enjoy a less stressful and well deserved existence. And who could blame her. In the absence of a main trade and consumer show, there are talks in the photographic trade to put a new package together, and this is an opportunity for digital print to get further embedded with an imaging event which is very closely related to its main core business. It’s the combination of trade and retail that makes the dynamic work, and the lack of it that has crippled previous attempts to promote an all-embracing printing exhibition. There is no longer a strictly trade section of the industry, or at least not a sufficiently large one to full an exclusive exhibition in the UK. The intelligent consumer can source products and services on equal terms through the internet, and most trade suppliers have a web based outlet direct to public sales even if it is diplomatically disguised under the banner of a separate retailer. Selling is one thing however, and while the high street has lost volume to cyber space, the one thing you cannot do on line is feel the paper and look at the colours. It’s the hands-on service you can only get from over-thecounter advice that is a vital sales advantage, and much under-promoted. The photographic trade was able to use Focus as a shop counter so customers could literally get hands on with cameras and gear even if they weren’t actually buying on site. The two way traffic of enquiry and information provided invaluable research into market trends, and potential demand or lack of it. The beauty of an exhibition is that you can get a lot more product under one big roof than you can in any one individual shop. You may not be able to draw in all of the possible customers nationwide as visitors, but you can certainly expect a representative cross section. Focus possibly drew ten per cent of the professional photographers in the UK in its attendance figures, but then perhaps four or five times those numbers of enthusiasts and educated amateurs, all of whom would be likely to spend money on product and services in the immediate future. What will replace Focus is likely to be even more consumer directed with a keen eye on mobile devices and tablets. This is exactly the area that the digital print industry needs to turn its attention to, because it’s the most important source of potential growth for the high street outlet. A few years ago some pundit coined the phrase “print facilitator” to describe the service of the on-demand print shop. Now these portable devices themselves have become the facilitators, enabling the capture and creation of images, designs and all manner of files. It’s the extra service that the specialist can provide that needs promotion which is why I am suggesting keeping a keen eye on what will be happening to Focus’ successor, whatever it is called, as it is bound to have ‘digital’ and ‘image’ essentially in the strap line. Given the lead in time to launch and prepare a major event, it may be some time in the gestation state, so there is an opportunity to look at some involvement from forward thinking movers and shakers in our industry. Now we have a little summer break, I expect to have some more news for you when we come back in our September issue.

SCANNING: THE GOOD, BAD AND THE UGLY

Apart from photography, and images grabbed from the internet, one important source of digital images for print is scannning. Many consumers have an A4 scanner at home, often as part of a cheap multi function printer. These are easy to use for basic scanning and archiving of documents, but when it gets more complicated with photographs and artwork of sensitive colours, the amateur expertise is no longer sufficient to produce print quality results. Most importantly, as this comes up on a daily basis at the shop counter, we cannot guarantee to match colours that have been scanned or otherwise captured without professional expertise and advice. Very few customers will have a scanner larger than A4 as these get expensive and take up a lot of room of the desktop, and scanners as large as A2 or A1 are generally only roll-fed ones used for plan prints. They can take a certain thickness of paper, but not anything that has heavy texture, is mounted on stiff board, or is likely to be smudged or damaged by the pressure of the rollers. Obviously customers can now take quite good representative pictures from their phone or tablet, and these are fine for sharing on the internet, but not suitable for any quality printing, and subject to the cautionary advice mentioned earlier. So we come to the fact that quality scanning is a service worth promoting and incorporating in the standard work flow of the digital print shop, not some black art that is the territory of the specialist. Most copiers actually do a very good job of scanning because they have to instantly reproduce the item put on the platen. The problem always comes in the printing and particularly in the saving. It’s well known that you can often get a better print by just a straight copy, rather than scanning saving and trying to adjust colours. The problem, and it’s not only the hardest but also one of the most common thing to try and explain to a customer, is that you are capturing an original that may comprise multiple colours and tones, in the case of a photograph, or individual colours, in the case of a painting, and then trying to print on a machine that mixes just four toners to get the end result. Even with high quality inkjet printing, where ten or twelve colour mixes are now common, totally accurate colour matching is never completely assured. It never was. But it’s amazing how many customers expect incredible quality, instantly and at price. We actually had one recently producing a short run booklet who wasn’t happy with some of the colours who asked how magazines like Vogue managed to do it! Well, they spend a lot of money, and they don’t expect it to be printed while you wait.... Modern digital printers are pretty good, considering the speed they work at. The one problem with scanning and saving from them is that they tend to save files, regardless of scanned resolution, as compressed files. This is true

v i v i d.

whether JPG, PDF or TIFF, and means an inevitable loss of information, which means colour and sharpness. Opening the scan in Photoshop will restore the original resolution and size, but not replace two thirds of the original digital detail that has been lost. So scanning at the highest resolution possible is the best way of keeping any sort of quality. What to do with originals that are bigger than the scanner? Well for the moment I shall put photography to one side and use the glass only. That means scanning the original in two or more parts and piecing them together. That’s where the expertise and experience comes in as I have had customers who have said they were quite happy to have the parts and save the cost of me doing the composite only to come back after frustrating hours spent in Photoshop at home. A couple of tips then, but keep them to yourself. Firstly a little bit of time on the scanner will save a lot of time on the computer. Try and match the individual parts as accurately as possible, and this means keeping them as level as possible, so you don’t have to do a lot of rotation to fit. Give the part scans plenty of overlap so you don’t get too close to edges, that way you can blend them in with multiple layers, and that way you can also compensate for any slight colour hue issues. Remember the scanner light only passes in one direction so try and scan the parts in the same plane if possible. If the scanner hood will allow, that will minimise any colour differences, even if you have to do a couple more scans. When you have all the individual parts, import them as layers into Photoshop, making the canvas size just a little bigger than the final output so you have room to manoeuvre. If you have done a good job with the scans, it shouldn’t be too difficult to make them into one, it can depend on the colours and features of the pieces. There are a couple of aids in the blending options of Photoshop layers to get a perfect join. One is to reduce the opacity of the layer above so you can see the detail in the layer below. Another is to use the option ‘Difference’ which compares the pixels in adjoining layers. Anything that matches exactly will appear black, anything that doesn’t will be highlighted. You can also try some of the other options like multiply or overlay to check any colour differences. The last touch is removing any slight join lines with a gentle eraser while you still have layers, rather than flattening and trying to use the clone tool. There are several stitching programmes available which do this magic in an automated sequence with more or less success, and these work fine for an interesting phone app, or a panorama of the Arizona desert where it doesn’t matter if a cactus is in the wrong place. If you are stitching a wedding party however, it is rather important that Auntie Joyce’s body has her head on it and not Uncle Ernie’s! Always remember that to a computer, as long as it fits and is the right colour, it will do! I am currently evaluating ArcSoft’s Scan-n-Stitch which seems to work very well sometimes and very badly at others. I’ll have to play with it a bit more before I can give it a fair review. It is available as a trial version if you want to try it. www.arcsoft.com

International Paper attains FSC accreditation for HP ranges International Paper has further underlined its commitment to environmental sustainability by achieving Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accreditation for its HP Home and Office and HP Office brands within its HP Everyday Papers range. The grades will become FSC certified with effect from the end of June 2013. This will mean that all the paper brands within the HP Everyday Papers range produced by International Paper will either be Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) certified, underlining the range’s high environmental principles and credentials. International Paper has the Global Exclusive Agreement to manufacture HP Everyday Papers. All HP Papers are produced with 100% raw material sourced from sustainably managed forests. This latest environmental accreditation follows the recent announcement of EU Eco-label accreditation for the HP Everyday Papers range, adding to its existing environmental endorsements. UK and Ireland Country Manager Mike Robertson says: “This is a further step in our commitment to supplying our key brands with

environmental certification and will continue to enhance the appeal of HP Everyday Papers.” The HP Everyday Paper range already has high environmental credentials, with its 75gsm A4 grade available with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accreditation. As a further endorsement of its environmental performance, the HP Everyday Papers range is also PEFC certified. This range is the perfect match for use with HP original inks and toners, enabling end users to get the best results out of their printers. What’s more, due to its high quality and performance standards, HP Papers perform right the first time and benefit from the latest innovations available in today’s paper industry. The HP Everyday

International Paper secures EU Eco-Label status International Paper has demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability by achieving EU Eco-label status for its HP Everyday Papers range. The grade is manufactured at International Paper’s paper mills, using virgin wood fibre from sustainable forests. International Paper’s paper mills are the best in class in terms of environmental performance. Having the EU Eco-label accreditation now complements the HP Everyday Papers existing environmental accreditations, which include attainment of both the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) Chain of Custody schemes, guaranteeing that a product is made from sustainably managed forests. The EU Eco-label is a voluntary environmental label created by the European Commission, established in 1992 to encouraged businesses

to market products and services that are kinder to the environment. Products awarded the Eco-label carry the flower logo to allow consumers including public and private purchasers to identify them easily. UK and Ireland Country Manager Mike Robertson says: “Having the Eco-label flower logo on the HP Everyday Papers range allows us to demonstrate how seriously International Paper takes our commitment to the environment.”

As part of the EU flower assessment criteria, manufacturers must also meet a wide range of environmental and sustainable requirements. International Paper had to show the origin of all fibres as well as demonstrate that 10% of fibres are sourced from certified sustainable managed forests. The HP Everyday Paper range already has high environmental credentials, with its 75gsm A4 grade available with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accreditation. As a further endorsement of its environmental performance, the HP Everyday Papers range is also PEFC certified. Last year the HP Everyday Paper’s range’s high environmental credentials were further underlined when new packaging was launched for the range. The new packaging carries environmental certification more predominantly on the rear panel, supporting and endorsing HP’s Environmental Paper Policy (EPP). This provides information and

environmental facts surrounding forest certification, recycling, renewable energy and sustainability. The HP Everyday Papers range is the perfect match for use with HP original inks and toners, enabling end users to get the best results out of their printers. What’s more, due to its high quality and performance standards, HP Papers perform right the first time and benefit from the latest innovations available in today’s paper industry. The HP Everyday Papers range was the first among office papers worldwide to carry ColorLok Technology. The HP Everyday Papers range is stocked in the UK by national merchant distributors; PaperlinX UK, Antalis UK, Office Depot, Staples and Robert Horne Ireland. Talking about Sharing

We have received another letter concerning a print machine supplier reneging on their promise to transfer title at the end of the lease. We are sharing our reply… You are not alone Sir! Firstly, yes this is unfortunately standard practice with some suppliers and secondly we will stand with you and offer support. As a group, we are 6000+ print businesses strong. If you can have your way, what do you want to do next? Do you want to keep the existing equipment or change to something else? We have had success in settling existing leases and as a third party can obtain title and sell on to you so you actually own the kit, or re-finance with one of our partners. We can now offer an alternative to equipment supplier finance, which puts you in the driving seat when upgrading or finishing the term of your ‘rental’. Historically equipment suppliers offer a ‘sales aid’ leasing agreement that can never give you ownership and may have a MPR (minimum period rental) that is self renewing. When the supplier

is the only party able to offer a trade-in for the existing equipment, other suppliers have to add the whole ‘settlement figure’ onto the new lease. It has become increasingly difficult for finance to be arranged when the total is for the new kit plus the ‘thin air’ settlement for the previous deal. This would never happen with personal car finance. Can you imagine that you could only get a reduction on your outstanding payments, by way of a trade in, if you stuck to your original supplier? I have attached a document for you to consider when next looking at new kit, or we can use the same to settle your lease with existing supplier. I am happy to look through the small print of your existing lease if you can forward a copy, your service agreement may also have a minimum volume billing over a set period, so include that too. As a first step you should contact the leasing company for a settlement quote. This will trigger off alarm bells with the supplier, as part of the ‘sales aid’ package is to protect their MIF, (machines in field.) It is a shame that these suppliers do not want to win business on an even playing field, preferring to tie up and exploit their existing customers. These practices are self-harming to print equipment manufacturers, as it is difficult to build new business on such a restrictive basis. Having the best solution to offer and the best service package may never win new customers if everyone is tied to their existing suppliers even when they want to upgrade somewhere else. C’mon suppliers let’s have a fair fight for our business, what’s the worst that can happen, you could win some new accounts!

sing a clever combination of an A3 bypass tray and landscape printing the Brother MFC J-4510DW has achieved this. So… you can have colour, black and white and scanning all in one neat little machine. We have been beta testing this machine and it won’t be going back! I am trying to persuade our wonderful, well respected, good looking editor to buy it for me – they say flattery is supposed to work so I’ll report back next month if I have a little Brother on my desk. The speed of print at 20 pages per minute mono and 18 in full colour is impressive for home use, especially when you pick up those little extra jobs from the pub on the way home and can literally do them ‘in-house’ This Brother all-in-one printer has multifunctions way above the desk space you allocate to it. Print, copy, scan and fax and use the 9.3cm LCD touchscreen to access cloud services like Google docs, Facebook etc. Duplex printing from wireless or wired connection is simple or use the 20 sheet ADF for hard copy originals. The paper tray holds 150 sheets 80gsm with your A3 printing from the bypass tray. Saving money at home begins with the time and petrol of having to dash back to work for the odd customer proof and small run ‘friends and family’ print jobs. The automatic double-sided printing saves paper and the individual colour high yield ink cartridges are reported to deliver up to 1,200 pages each. The print quality is certainly up to a professional standard and the half tones better than seen before on home produced kit, so don’t forget to charge for the print. Making money from home has always been a dream of mine. The scanning and production of end of term essays for your own family and prints taken on your camera for your Mum are much better produced at home so as not to set the wrong precedent for your colleagues at work to all start bringing in their homework for you to produce for free. Don’t just design and print, you need to be stuffing, addressing and posting too. What is the technology used in the Genano 310? The device uses the Genano technology of multi-ionised beams; the negatively charged particles in the airflow are projected onto the positively charged inner wall of the device. The wall is automatically rinsed at regular intervals. The inactivated residue is collected in a container at the foot of the unit.

Genano Case Study

A breathe of fresh air in your print room

QPP road tests are normally reserved for pre-press, print, print finishing and despatch equipment or software; but what else do you need to create and manufacture print? We could argue that print is driven by demand and taking that as a given the key ingredient has got to be, people. Proper tactile print requires a skilled team of personnel to help others communicate on paper. technology offers faster production, improved quality and reduced running costs, resulting in the print industry constantly up-grading to the latest kit. To some extent, people in print have benefited from digital technology. Less moving parts creates less dust and a reduction in equipment down time when operators have to get involved with the workings of the machinery. Do you remember those heady days of having to stick different parts of your body in a photocopier? Improving staff well being is important to the delivery of all services and in print, the air quality is particularly relevant. Decontamination of airborne paper and toner particles, plus all types of viruses, bacteria spores, ozone and odours are achievable with a Genano air

How does it work? Air moves through the air cleaning chamber. Negative ions project particles into positive charged walls where they are captured. The positive charged wall is routinely washed using water and Genano cleaning fluid. Flushed particles are collected in a container at the bottom of the unit and then disposed off safely.

Service of Genano 310 The unit undergoes an automatic inside cleaning sequence and once a year a complete maintenance is required by trained service personnel. The exchange of the active carbon filter takes place at the same time. The advantages of using Genano 310 in any work environment is that it maintains healthy, clean purified air in comparison to any other devices available on the market that protects both staff and customers, reducing cross contamination in all public and work areas and saving energy over other air purification systems. Birthday Suit Amber, who was a rather well proportioned secretary, spent almost all of her vacation sunbathing on the roof of her hotel. She wore a bathing suit the first day, but on the second, she decided that no one could see her way up there, and she slipped out of it for an overall tan. She’d hardly begun when she heard someone running up the stairs. She was lying on her stomach, so she just pulled a towel over her rear. ‘Excuse me, miss,’ said the flustered assistant manager of the hotel, out of breath from running up the stairs. ‘The Hilton doesn’t mind your sunbathing on the roof, but we would very much appreciate your wearing a bathing suit as you did yesterday.’ ‘What difference does it make?’ Amber asked rather calmly. ‘No one can see me up here, and besides, I’m covered with a towel.’ ‘Not exactly,’ said the embarrassed man. ‘You’re lying on the dining room skylight.’

Shaggy dog story A three-legged dog walks into a saloon in the Old West. He slides up to the bar and announces: ‘I’m looking for the man who shot my paw.’ Who sent this in? Two weevils grew up in Cornwall. One went to Hollywood and became a famous actor. The other stayed behind, sold copiers and never amounted to much. The second one, naturally, became known as the lesser of the two weevils.

A blonde too far… A ventriloquist is touring the clubs and stops to entertain in a small town. He’s going through his usual run of off-colour and ‘dumb blonde’ jokes, when a well-presented blonde woman in the fourth row stands on her chair and shouts: ‘I’ve heard just about enough of your stupid blonde jokes, you idiot!’ ‘What makes you think you can stereotype women that way? What connection can a person’s hair colour possibly have with their fundamental worth as a human being? It is morons like you that prevent women like myself from being respected at work and in our communities and from reaching our full potential, because you and your anachronistic kind continue to perpetuate negative images against not only blondes, but women in general, for the sake of cheap laughs.’ ‘You are a pathetic relic of the past, and what you do is not only contrary to discrimination laws in every

civilised country, it is deeply offensive to people with modern sensibilities and basic respect for their fellow citizens. You should hang your head in shame, you pusillanimous little maggot.’ Flustered, the ventriloquist begins to apologise, when the blonde yells, ‘you stay out of this Mister! I’m talking to that little bastard on your knee!’

Blonde News The blonde had been married about a year when one day she came running up to her husband jumping for joy. Not knowing how to react, the husband started jumping up and down along with her. ‘Why are we so happy?’ he asked. She said, ‘Honey, I have some really great news for you!’ ‘Great’ he said, ‘tell me what you’re so happy about.’ She stopped breathless from all the jumping up and down. ‘I’m pregnant!’ she gasped. The husband was ecstatic, as they had been trying for a while. He grabbed her, kissed her, and started telling her how wonderful it was, and that he couldn’t be happier. Then she said, ‘Oh, honey there’s more.’ ‘What do you mean more?’, he asked. ‘Well we are not having just one baby, we are going to have TWINS!’ Amazed at how she could know so soon after getting pregnant, he asked her how she knew. ‘It was easy,’ she said, ‘I went to the pharmacy and bought the 2 pack home pregnancy test kit and both tests came out positive!’

One for the punters Riding the favourite at Cheltenham, a jockey was well ahead of the field. Suddenly he was hit on the head by a turkey and a string of sausages. He managed to keep control of his mount and pulled back into the lead, only to be struck by a box of Christmas crackers and a dozen mince pies as he went over the last fence. With great skill he managed to steer the horse to the front of the field once more when, on the run in, he was struck on the head by a bottle of sherry and a Christmas pudding. Thus distracted, he succeeded in coming only second. He immediately went to the stewards to complain that he had been seriously hampered…!

The danger of making copies from copies... A novice monk was assigned to help

other monks in the monastery copy by hand the old canons and laws of the church. He noticed, however, that all of the monks were copying from copies, and not from original manuscripts. He went to the Abbot to question this, pointing out that if someone made even a small error in the first copy, it would never be picked up and would, in fact, be continued in all of the subsequent copies. ‘We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son’ said the Abbot who then went down into the vault beneath the monastery where the original manuscripts were archived in a locked cell that hadn’t been opened for centuries. Hours pass and the old Abbot fails to return. The novice became concerned and went down into the vault to look for him. Searching, he came upon the Abbot who was weeping and banging his head against the wall. “We missed the R!!” he wailed, “We missed the R!! We missed the damn R!!!” His forehead was bruised and bleeding and he was crying uncontrollably. “What’s wrong, Father, what’s wrong?” the novice asked the Abbot. With a choking voice, the old abbot replies, “What’s wrong? The proper spelling was celebrate.”

Lucky number After leaving the racecourse Bill bumped into his old friend Peter on the bus. “Say,” Peter said, “How’s it going?” “Going? You want to hear one of the most amazing things that ever happened? Tell me- what’s today’s date?” “July seventh.” “Right. The seventh day, of the seventh month. I go to the races at seven minutes past seven. My son is seven years old today, and we live at number seven, Seventh Avenue.” “Let me guess,” Peter interrupted. “You put everything you had on the seventh horse in the seventh race.” “Right.” “And he won!” Peter sighed. “No. He came in seventh.”

from bad judgment. The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket. A closed mouth gathers no foot. Duct tape is like the force. It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together. I didn’t say it was your fault. I said I was going to blame you. Eagles may soar, but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines. There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither one works. Never miss a good chance to shut up. Generally speaking, you aren’t learning much when your mouth is moving. Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticise them, you’re a mile away, and you have their shoes. Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it. Don’t be irreplaceable; if you can’t be replaced, you can’t be promoted. You can go anywhere you want if you look serious and carry a clipboard. Always try to make other people happy, even if you have to leave them alone to do it. The older you get, the better you get, (unless you’re a banana).

most professionals cannot keep up with the performance of the new graduates. Life’s a beach A man walked into a doctor’s office and the receptionist asked him what he had. He replied, “I got shingles.” She said, “Fill out this form and supply your name, address, medical insurance number. When you’re done, please take a seat.” Fifteen minutes later a nurse’s aide came out and asked him what he had. He said, “I got shingles.” So she took down his height, weight, and complete medical history, then said, “Change into this gown and wait in the examining room.” A half hour later a nurse came in and asked him what he had. He said, “I got shingles.” So she gave him a blood test, a blood pressure test, an electrocardiogram, and told him to wait for the doctor. An hour later the doctor came in and asked him what he had. He said, “Shingles.” The doctor gave him a full-cavity examination, and then said, “I just checked you out thoroughly, and I can’t find shingles anywhere. “ The man replied, “They’re outside in the truck. Where do you want them?”

…but unfortunately she’d popped her clogs.
