Dynamic adopts new Versafire with DFE Dynamic Print Media will be the first UK company to install a Versafire EV with the Heidelberg Digital Front End, enabling them to use it within a Prinect workflow for rapid response printing. “We looked at a number of suppliers including Xerox, Konica Minolta, Canon, Ricoh and Heidelberg. As the name Heidelberg is synonymous with heritage, build quality, reliability and innovation we feel it would make a tremendous addition to our other digital and litho facilities. The creative studio will greatly benefit from the new functionality and versatility the EV has to offer and so will our clients,” says Nigel Stevens, director. Nigel’s wife and creative director Shelley says: “We love the 6pp A4 capability, as the new EV enables auto duplex printing on sheet lengths up to 700mm, the ability to produce short runs of folders and to run white and four colour print in one pass on a variety of stocks, textures and colours. It is the flexibility with colours, the registration accuracy and ability to use the transparency application on lead sheets that is very exciting. We believe we can bring fluorescents into our designs and achieve an extra colour space or run halftone neons

on top of metallics. We are looking forward to experimenting with it, trying different textured papers and colour scenarios and pushing its capabilities to the limit.” The Prinect DFE will allow us to take work straight to press. Dynamic likes its usability

Fantasy Prints invests in a Kongsberg X 24 Starter Fantasy Prints, certified ISO9001 in October 2017, is well known in Edinburgh, East Lothian and the Scottish Borders for providing complete printing and signage solutions. After purchasing an EFI VUTEk GS2000LX Pro from CMYUK in 2017, they found that the cutter they previously owned couldn’t keep up with the speed of the new printer, and backlogs started to become a problem. They returned to CMYUK — the independent supplier of wide-format digital printers, cutting equipment and materials — to find a solution gave them greater productivity and more options for different media, which was the Kongsberg X24 Starter. The size and speed of the Kongsberg has allowed the company to expand into new markets, reduce overtime, save money and cut back on wastage. “The training we got from CMYUK was excellent,” says Sarah McMorn, Managing Director at Fantasy Prints, “We’re really excited about the Kongsberg, especially considering the new opportunities we can offer our clients and the money we can save. We now have the capability to offer a complete one-stop solution. CMYUK always take an interest in the company and offer solutions that will benefit Fantasy Prints and the team members in the company “ The Kongsberg X Starter offers a broad selection of tools, providing quality results on a wide range of cutting, creasing and plotting tasks. www.cmyuk.com • www.fantasyprints.co.uk

According to the organisers of the Business Awards, 2018 was a record-breaking year in terms of entries and the quality of those entries made the judging process very tough for everyone involved. The time, energy and enthusiasm that went into the entry process did not go unnoticed and the Business Awards recognise and reward the unique achievements of businesses like CSL Digital. Huw Davies, Sales and Marketing Director —

CSL Digital, “Given the high calibre of the other companies in the International Trade and Export category, we were genuinely taken aback to win this award. It’s an amazing achievement that everyone at CSL Digital can take great pride in.

Route1 Print inspires Britain

For the second year running, online trade printer, Route 1 Print, is named as one of 1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain by the London Stock Exchange Group. Since 2013, The London Stock Exchange Group has been promoting UK SMEs by identifying 1,000 highly promising businesses for the coming year. They believe that the dynamism of these growing companies is an invaluable driving force in the UK’s economy as a whole. In order to make the list, businesses need to meet two different criteria. They must show positive revenue growth over the past three years, and be market leaders within their sector for either the number of employees, square

footage, or number of filed patents. “We are thrilled to have been included in this prestigious list not once, but twice, in consecutive years,” says Managing Director, Adam Carnell. “As a company, we are constantly looking for opportunities to improve ourselves so we are very proud to be included on this list again, alongside so many other brilliant businesses. “We put our success down to our continued investment in quality – quality technology and a quality team. Our entire team has worked extremely hard to get us to this point and we’re very grateful to have them on board.” In the past four years, Route 1 Print has

Walters explains: “We did look at other options on the market, but we particularly liked the AF406F’s ease of set-up and its simple to operate touch screen with job memory storage. “It has really sped up our production and expanded our capacity. It will also help us to move jobs through the building quicker and will enable us to target new work.” “As a result of the increased capacity the system offers, we have already seen the benefits with a streamlined workflow that is more efficient and effective.” Hartgraph’s Horizon AF-406F is a JDF ready automated modular buckle folder. Its 6+6 buckle modular concept allows for simple to complex fold patterns that maximise folding variations. HP chose awardwinning ONYX software during the FESPA Global Print Expo in Berlin to showcase the capabilities of the newly-unveiled HP Latex R2000 Plus printer with white ink technology. HP’s RIP certification programme defines a comprehensive set of compatibility criteria aligned to the highest performance standards and the unique capabilities of HP Latex printing technologies. The HP RIP Certification is a process to differentiate HP RIP partners who reach a specific and superior level of integration, compatibility and performance with the specific device. Only companies that have demonstrated conformance with these criteria are awarded HP Latex certified status. For the new HP Latex R Series printers, Onyx Graphics designed the driver to include new custom ONYX Quick Sets to make it even easier to print with white ink. The included Quick Sets feature uses the ONYX Spot Layer tool to generate white under or over layers, resulting in spectacular white output for sign and display applications. “ONYX software certification by HP and its integrated compatibility with latex printers recreates the definition of quality and colour for white ink applications on transparent or

coloured media,” said Bryan Manwaring, Director of Product Marketing at Onyx Graphics, Inc. “HP Latex R Series customers utilising ONYX software can feel confident in delivering consistent quality output with efficient printer operation, right out of the box.” About the HP Latex R Series printers — According to HP, the company’s HP Latex R Series is the first true hybrid latex technology that merges HP’s flexible printing capabilities into rigid printing. The HP Latex R Series brings the most vibrant colours into the rigid printing world, pioneering white ink capabilities with the introduction of HP Latex White Ink. The HP Latex R Series brings unparalleled speed and quality to a wide range of rigid materials such as foamboards, foam PVC, cardboard, fluted polypropylene, solid plastics, aluminum, wood and glass among others. HP’s waterbased Latex Inks preserve the look and feel of

the media and deliver odourless prints that are both safe for the environment and the printer operator. ADAPT launch new HP Latex R2000 printer ADAPT has been announced as the exclusive UK distributor for HP’s new Latex R2000 rigid printer which was unveiled at FESPA 2018. The HP Latex R2000 is the first, true hybrid technology that merges HP’s renowned flexible printing capabilities into rigid printing. The HP Latex R Series brings the most vibrant colours into the flexible and rigid printing world and pioneers white ink capabilities with the introduction of HP Latex White Ink. The printer can also accommodate materials up to 2.5-metres/98” wide and up to 5cm/2” thick, bringing unparalleled speed and quality to a wide range of rigid materials, such as foamboards, foam PVC, cardboard, fluted polypropylene and solid plastics. As part of the Amari family of specialists, ADAPT has significant expertise in marketing rigid printing consumables, providing customers with everything connected with printing – from boards and hardware to roll media and inks. The company has a long history implementing and supporting HP Latex printing solutions. This experience has been instrumental in their selection as the ideal

exclusive partner for the new HP Latex R2000. ADAPT will go on to dedicate an HP Latex Rigid Printing Demo Centre in Manchester, scheduled to open in July of this year. This facility will offer customers the opportunity to see the R2000 in action, test the product themselves and explore all the possibilities this new innovative kit opens up to them. Richard Barham, General Manager of ADAPT,

commented: “We are absolutely delighted to be appointed as the exclusive reseller for this game-changing new printer from HP. First XV win scrum for Epson SureColor SC-F2100 Rugby retailer First XV has bought the UK’s first SureColor SC-F2100 DTG (Direct to Garment) printer from Epson reseller Xpres to help grow its own brand products business. Customers can now buy a wide range of colourful T-shirts with slogans like “Eat Sleep Rugby Repeat” through to “Harry Propper”, from its web site (rugbystuff.com) and Facebook page. “Earlier in the year we came up with a few T-shirt designs and at that point we wanted to speed up the process,” says Adam Clark, partner of First XV. “We wanted to control all the steps rather than relying on others to do it for us. We had known Xpres for several years; Their delivery is quick and they provide good training and support, so we listened to their advice. Furthermore, everyone we asked seemed to point us in the direction of Epson.” Edinburgh-based First XV estimates it will produce about 100 T-shirts a week initially, but this figure will increase over time. Launched earlier this year, the Epson SureColor SC-F2100 builds on the success of the SC-F2000 and includes new features including improved speed, lower total cost of ownership and the ability to create and print designs using Epson’s Garment Creator software. It has five colours, the four process colours (CMYK) plus white, and it uses Epson’s own PrecisionCore TFP printhead “Now we can offer our own merchandise as well as branded products which gives us something quite unique. We plan to expand our in-house production because we believe we can generate extra profit margins from this type of work,” says Mr Clark. Damon Piall, sales director of Xpres, says: “We are obviously delighted with the release of the second generation DTG machine from Epson. The original SC-F2000 machine was very popular with our customer base so we are glad to see the new and improved SC-F2100 retains the ease of use that gives it appeal to a wide audience. DTG has been a very strong market for Xpres which continues to grow year on year. Making the first

SC-F2100 sale in the UK is a brilliant result for us and our continuing relationship with Epson.” Phil McMullin, sales manager of Epson UK, says: “DTG is the ideal technology for one off or short run production of cotton-based garments and bags. We live in an environment where everyone wants to stand out from the crowd so we anticipate growth and many more SC-F2100 orders to follow. Congratulations to First XV for being the first UK user.” www.epson.co.uk

VGL first for Durst’s P5 nextgeneration technology VGL, the Reading-based screen and digital print company, has become the first company in the UK and Ireland to sign up for a specialised version of Durst’s next-generation platform, the P5 Series, which was announced globally earlier this year. The Durst new P5 250 HS system — configured with white as a printing colour — will be installed at VGL’s Smallmead production facility in Reading, Berkshire, this summer. VGL’s investment in its first Durst flatbed printer will dramatically ramp up capacity, quadruple the output of the machine it is replacing, and enhance its offering to a variety of customers. VGL, which is committed to investing in latest technology, is a supplier to major retailers, exhibitions and live event organisers, museums and public and private sectors, including rail and fleet companies. VGL already has seven Durst systems — two Rhotex fabric printers and five roll-to-roll digital inkjet machines. The P5 will bring a print volume capability (in twopass mode) of up to 240 sqm/h and high resolution mode of 1200 dpi. David Gray, VGL Managing Director, said: “Our flatbed capacity needed upgrading because one of our machines had come to the end of its useful life. We considered all options with lots of different players and, although we’ve never had a Durst flatbed before, this ticked all the right boxes. It will quadruple output in comparison to its predecessor and at a higher resolution. This will open a lot of doors for VGL and is a huge step forward. We’re seeing a significant increase in demand in flatbed sales which drives this investment. “At VGL, we’re committed to investing in the very latest technology, so the launch of P5 was of interest to us. The Durst manufacturing facility in Lienz is impressive, every component that goes into the machine is produced in the factory, and this is reassuring in terms of standards of build quality and reliability. Plus their after-sales service and care is excellent. What we also found impressive was that P5 has been designed following consultation with existing Durst customers, in terms of how the user interface should look and feel. The P5 will be an exciting addition to our portfolio of kit and further strengthens our relationship with Durst.”

Peter Bray, Managing Director of Durst UK and Ireland, said: “We’re extremely proud that VGL, a long-serving customer, has become the first company over here to sign a deal for our next-generation technology, the P5 250 HS machine. This was a perfect fit for VGL, a company recognised as producing outstanding printed products for a diverse range of customers across numerous sectors. With the P5 family we provide tools for change and profit. We have a firm commitment to continue to lead innovation in the large format market.” Durst, a manufacturer of advanced digital printing and production technologies, unveiled the P5 in Lienz, Austria, in February. In addition to printers that have state of the art, touch operation based user-interfaces and leading-edge remote service capabilities, the launch also involved newly, in-house developed software and workflow solutions. Everything is aimed and streamlined to maximise performance and uptime of the printing family, along with unparalleled flexibility in media and job handling. The P5 250 HS is targeted towards high volume industrial production, as well as one-offs in offset quality. P5 relates to five core features at the heart of this technology: productivity, reliability, workflow, versatility and print quality. www.durst-group.com

Reach for the rainbow with full spectrum NeverTear As businesses increasingly look for innovative ways to take their communications up a notch, Antalis is reminding printers of the benefits to be had by making full use of the colour capabilities of the Xerox Premium NeverTear range. According to latest research, 85% of consumers believe colour plays a huge part when purchasing a product, with 80% revealing that colour is ultimately responsible for brand recognition. The result is mounting pressure on businesses across a full spectrum of sectors to ensure their marketing and internal communications are not only informative and on brand but also ooze aesthetic appeal. As such, the Xerox® Premium NeverTear range, currently available in 14 vibrant colours including pastel hues, presents printers with untold opportunities to tap a growing segment of sectors looking for greater colour capabilities for creating paper-based

communications that really hit the mark. The range comprises of a highly durable, tear proof and waterproof film that can be printed on using colour and mono laser printers — making it suitable for high quality digital printing and outdoor applications such as safety signage, clothes tags, menus, placemats and table tents, to name just a few. By combining Premium NeverTear’s enhanced colour range with white and metallic toners, customers can achieve truly striking

designs by optimising colour vibrancy that gives outstanding image quality, as well as high opacity. In the office environment, for instance, the distinctive shades can be applied for documentation solutions, such as medical, legal and education documentation on colourcoded pages, whilst within retail, the Vivid Red can be used to identify sale or clearance items. What’s more, in an industrial setting, Premium NeverTear’s writable surface can produce easyto-see colour coded tags to clearly identify work-in-progress (WIP) documents and items due for inspection. On top of this, for customers looking to boost their green credentials, unlike laminated documents, which cannot be recycled, Premium NeverTear’s special aqueous surface coating means it can be recycled and reused as a filler for items such as concrete. www.antalis.co.uk

PIXEL PROPHET

NEW TRICKS FOR OLD PROBLEMS Last month Martin Christie showed how much advanced stitching software had developed in Adobe’s two leading pixel programmes, Photoshop and Lightroom, enabling scanned sections of much larger originals to be pieced together accurately, and most importantly, quickly.

[W]

hen customers can take a quick image on their phone, they find it hard to understand why the same technology doesn’t magically transform that digital capture into something ready for large format print. Certainly they will be reluctant to part with a lot of cash for the service, which is why making full use of a small scanner is preferable to investing in a rather expensive large one. Very few people will appreciate the difference in cost involved, or be prepared to match it which is why big scanners are a rarity. Even if the original is an expensive piece of artwork, there is a perceived price threshold in the mind of all but the few who have faced the issue before. Often it’s just something that’s been created too big to copy so there is a very real cost ceiling in terms of what it’s worth. But if it means the print shop profits from other printing as a result, it has to be a valuable service. Barely had the ink on the June issue dried when an even bigger challenge arrived than the two examples featured. This was another painting approximately 1.5 metres square but this time with dozens of intricate shapes, joints and lots of subtle colours covering every square centimetre. In order to pick up the detail I needed to shoot a minimum of six individual overlapping slices, and in order to minimise lens distortion, kept the camera still on a tripod and rotated the canvas 360 degres in the same plane. This then presents either software with six RAW images of around 30Mb each, but with different orientation. Normally if I was doing the stitching

manually I would turn all the pictures round the right way up to give myself a better visual reference. But in this case I thought I would give Adobe’s finest a proper challenge and let them sort out the pieces without any help, rather like a jigsaw without the picture on the top of the box. Now this did produce some electronic head scratching. In fact pretty well everything else came to a standstill as the computer took a deep breath grasping the sheer scope and complication of the task. We are talking a trillion individual pixels of information all held in partial suspension, each one needing to be classified, saved or discarded. Anyone who complains about devices being slow often has no idea of the physical size of the task being asked of it. Some time elapsed as a succession of fleeting ghost images flashed on the screen as blending layers were analysed and rearranged until, with the slight hint of a smug expression, the monitor revealed a final composition. It looked pretty good on screen but a print out at 50 per cent actual size revealed a few errors, minor ones admittedly not obvious at first glance — a couple of jagged lines and misplaced corners out of literally thousands of accurately matched ones. If the computer had a human emotion, it was as if it had just thought sod it that will do — I’ll bodge that one! I think it’s an available memory issue rather than a software problem, but not being able to test it on a superfast processor that’s only an intelligent guess. We work with what we have, which is adequate for most daily tasks in the studio, but sometimes we ask a little too much of the tools at hand. The problem is you can’t tell a computer to slow down and take its time over a problem. It’s been programmed to deliver the goods as fast as possible to please us, and patience isn’t dialed into its circuits. That, and the fact that while dealing with the task in hand, it is also doing a multitude of other things in the background which it thinks are just as essential in the scheme of things. You don’t have the option of just doing one thing at a time. The solution in this case was just to make the job a little easier by stitching it in stages — two at a time — so the six slices became three, and layered correctly to have the same orientation. Little bit more long winded but a perfect result in the end and a valuable lesson learnt. Photomerge, used here, is just one of the many features which Adobe are continually updating and improving, which is why anyone with older versions of the product, and not

blur in any motion, or just a general lack of sharpness, and there isn’t much that can be done about this in print. Artificial sharpening on a small screen may make it look better, but that’s just a display illusion. General exposure problems are caused by simply letting the camera decide what is important in the image, which may be the sky or the ground but not the people in the middle. Basically this results in the picture having too much light or too little, and may also throw up colour hue issues because the processor does not have enough information to play with. Photoshop has always had exposure controls to sort these problems, but they used to be relatively crude instruments, and of course early digital images were pretty poor in pixel content. Now we have mega files even from phones there is plenty of substance to play with and the intelligent software is able to peer into it to a fine degree. Lightroom introduced a much finer selection of develop tools to adjust not only exposure, but shadows and highlights, as well as a whole pile of specific controls of contrast, clarity and individual colours. And like PS, LR continues to be improved with more sophisticated features. The latest is the Dehaze tool which has been placed in the main control panel above Vibrance and Saturation. This has several clever tricks because, although it’s called Dehaze, it actually can add haze as well as take it away. subscribed to the Creative Cloud plan is at a disadvantage. While I always point out that other software is available, there is no other that has such a comprehensive range of applications that are completely complimentary. If you are subscribed to the full package you will know the list is quite substantial, even if you only use one or two regularly, the resource is extensive. The primary photographic applications are Photoshop, Lightroom and Bridge. The latter is used for viewing and reviewing images as it also reveals file detail, date and often source. It can also be used for re-naming and archiving. PS and LR do the real image manipulation work, but do it in quite different ways which is why it is important to have a working knowledge of both to select which is best for a particular task. In simple terms PS can do a lot more, having many more functions, but because of that it can be a bulky juggernaut of a programme if you need to handle a lot of images. LR is much leaner, and perfect for tackling lots of files all at the same time — when a customer gives you a full memory stick or camera card for example and you need to find and tune a selection of pictures. A visual image is a lot quicker to identify than scrolling through a list of anonymous file names even if it may take a little longer to load, and often there are several versions of the same one. Why bother with image editing when customers are supplying their own files? It’s just that extra bit of professional care that can make the difference between the counter service which can give advice and make corrections, rather than an online one which cannot. It’s almost inevitable that images taken on mobile devices are not print ready as they are designed to be viewed on bright backlit screens and some adjustment is likely. A few second in PS or LR can save a lot more time wasted back and forth on the printer. Bear in mind that the customer has come to you expecting that expertise, not to be told their phone is rubbish. Most devices are capable of taking a reasonable shot in the right conditions, but unfortunately most are used in the wrong conditions and with the wrong settings, usually by shooting everything in an automatic mode. Dull conditions will make the camera chose a very slow shutter speed causing

vivid-online.com

Combined with the other general and specific adjusters this can magically recover an image which looks beyond saving at first glance. A few years ago, it would have been, but as my example shows, the impossible has been redefined. The Dehaze tool is also available in PS but it is hidden inside the RAW filter box. This is a very useful option, much underused because although it is the automatic option for opening RAW files, it can also be used on any other non-raw pixel files. Open image and go Filter>Camera Raw Filter and the whole box of tricks is revealed. This enables similar develop controls to those available in LR, but although a specific set of settings can be saved as a preset, it is a bit more long winded having to deal with single files. New tools such as these, as with the previous Photomerge, are all the result of the software being able to interrogate the very skeleton of the image rather than just the surface. Every image has different content, so there is no universal one click solution. There’s still a certain amount of trial and error involved, but it gets easier and quicker the more you do. At first sight this may all look a bit daunting, but with a bit of practice you quickly learn what can be done and what really is still impossible. And that’s a priceless service which the bureau needs to provide, and which will look like rocket science to the average customer. When it’s tough competing price for price against online competition, it’s quality and expertise that can still count for something especially as printed images are still, and probably always will be, something special.

THE MAGIC TOUCH

MERGING MARKETS – A SIGN OF OUR TIMES When printers produce ‘soft signage’ in-house with LFPs and matching laminates, we encourage enquiries for greater long lasting print products. Your customers require signs that have superior UV protection together with anti-graffiti properties. Print in-house or outsource?

[D]

uraluxe offers the solution. Duraluxe is a unique gloss powder coated HD aluminium product that offers UV resistance together with anti-graffiti properties delivering innovation for full colour outdoor signage as never seen before. Traditionally full colour transfer decoration of aluminium panels printed using any sublimation ink have proved unsuitable or acceptable for outdoor use due to poor durability against the effects of UV, graffiti and weathering. DyeSub Magic® (a brand of TheMagicTouch (GB) Ltd) in partnership with the manufacturer, Decoral® Inc., global leaders in powder coating technology for the past 30 years, introduce for the first time Duraluxe a new double powder coating process to aluminium sublimation panels. The 1.2mm (0.045”) thick blank panels are printed in full colour using sublimation ink transfers and a suitable professional transfer heat press. The finished product comes with a certified minimum five-year guarantee for use outdoors to the ISO 11664-4 standard. Printed aluminium panels continue to be very popular for indoor use and are commonly manufactured using various liquid coating technologies but the criteria for outdoor signage demands certified UV protection. The unique patented ‘double’ powder coating process also enables the panels to be trimmed and formed easily avoiding any flaking or sharp edges. Duraluxe when decorated is perfect for high quality signage requirements and a cost effective alternative to vitreous enamel signage

with stunning full colour imaging. Duraluxe panels are compatible with most recognised sublimation ink brands including; Sawgrass, Jtec, Kiian, Sensient, STS and Epson.

Benefits of Duraflex

• No rust or corrosion • Heat resistant • Five year UV Warranty to ISO 11664-4 standard. • Resistant to weathering, salt and air carried chemicals • Stunning full colour print options up to 1200dpi • Easy to cut, trim and form with no flaky edges • Range of pre-cut sizes with master sheets up to 48” x 96” (1.2m x 2.4m) • Cost effective indoor and outdoor signage • Easy to punch holes and round corners

What is Powder Coating?

Powder coated aluminium involves applying dry paint to an aluminium product by way of electrostatically charging the powder and then spraying it onto the product. Decoral® Inc.’s exclusive patented aluminium coating technology allows for perfect surfaces to decorate every time. Powder coating is durable and results in a finished product that withstands harsh

environmental conditions. These include extreme UV exposure, salt spray and heavy pollution.

How to Print with Sublimation

PRINT: Produce transfer on a suitable sublimation printer. PRESS: Heat press the printed transfer to the Duraluxe panel for 130 secs at 190ºC. PEEL: Peel the transfer away, (the ink will have penetrated the surface leaving a vibrant image behind).

Maintenance

The Duraluxe panels are graffiti resistant therefore it is possible to clean the surface with water, white spirit, alcohol or acetone using a dry non-abrasive cloth. TheMagicTouch® 01582 671444 sales@themagictouch.co.uk www.themagictouch.co.uk

VARIABLE DATA PRINTING

VDP WITH CORELDRAW GRAPHICS SUITE 2018 CorelDRAW® Graphics Suite 2018 is a powerful application that allows Variable Data Printing (VDP). In this tutorial, we’re going to explore the process of using CorelDRAW as part of your VDP workflow for creating student ID cards.

[T]

he power of VDP lies in its ability to perform a print merge that automates the process of bringing together various elements such as images, text, and barcodes into a common template. Before we get started with the tutorial, it’s essential to note that when using a file for VDP, there are a few simple rules that must be followed for a successful output: 1 The RIP you’re using must be able to support Variable Data; 2 The design needs to have frames or containers where the data will be inserted and these containers must be created using spot colours that have specific names; 3 The spreadsheet with the data must have column headers that match the colour names. As mentioned, VDP is only possible when using a compatible RIP. For the purpose of this tutorial, we’ll be using Roland VersaWorks Dual that’s included in CorelDRAW 2018. First, let’s start with a quick look at the spreadsheet where we’re hosting our student ID data. In this case, there are three columns: “VDP_BARCODE” where I have used the student ID number that we’ll print with a barcode font; “VDP_NAME” which lists the students’ names; and “VDP_PHOTO” which is a listing of the path to each corresponding headshot. Please note, photos must be one of the following formats; JPEG, TIFF, EPS, PDF, or PS. To create the list of photos showing the required full path, head to Windows and from a Command Prompt in the Photo directory, type the following command and pipe it to a text document: dir/s/b *.jpg > student_list.txt. This

will create a txt file that you can copy and paste into the spreadsheet. Now, it’s time to create a custom colour palette within CorelDRAW. Go to Windows>Color Palettes>Color Palette Manager. Then navigate under Palette Libraries>Spot>Roland and select Roland VersaWorks. From the flyout at the top of this palette, select Palette > Save as and give your new palette a name. I called mine “VDP_Printing.” Next, from the Windows menu go to Color Palettes > Palette Editor. Here, we’ll leave the CutContour colour alone, but will change the names of the other colours listed. While in the Palette Editor, we’re also going to change the colours to something easy to see on the document. When making these changes, it’s important to ensure that you select only spot colours and that the colour names reflect the element in the spreadsheet each will represent. For example, we’ll name the colour that indicates where the photo will be placed “VDP_ PHOTO.” As you go through this process, it’s also important to ensure that all colour names begin with “VDP_” and are all in caps. The final step is to make the colour names visible, by clicking on the flyout icon at the top of the Color

Palette and selecting Show Color Names. This will make it easier to select the desired colours for the correct objects. Once you’ve finished the design, it’s time to change the colour of the VDP frames using the appropriate colours from your customised palette. Then export the file as an EPS. Note, as you’re doing this step, Convert spot colors to should not be selected. In VersaWorks Dual, drag your EPS file into the Job List and click the settings icon (bottom

left corner). Then in the Job Settings, click on Variable Data in the lower left corner. Enable the check box above the Variable Data Settings and then bring in the CSV spreadsheet file with your data by clicking on the yellow folder within Variable Data Settings.

Select the column label to format how the element will appear on the card. In the Attributes panel, you can edit text, change fonts, and make a number of other formatting changes. Once you’ve formatted all the columns, click on the Layout icon in the top left corner to configure the media, scaling, and print properties. Once all this is done, it’s just a matter of clicking Print. If you’ve put a cutline around your ID card template, once the printing is completed, the printer will go ahead and cut the cards. As we explored in this tutorial, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2018 is an ideal tool for speeding up and simplifying your VDP workflow. To learn more about the new features in the suite, please download the free 15-day trial from www.coreldraw.com. Roger Wambolt is Senior Product trainer with Corel. Xeretec (Xerox), Xeikon, printMAX, X-Press OnDemand, Blackman and White, Rollem, Nova Chrome, Inno Printer, Stanford Marsh Group and Wildcard Software are all among the latest companies to be exhibiting this year at The Print Show. Since its launch in 2015, The Print Show’s ethos has been to educate visitors and help them grow their business. This theme very much continues with the 2018 show and Devine will focus on new business selling and how this process can be simplified during his keynote presentation. One of the most popular figures in UK print, Devine has a 35-year background in sales, sales management and business management. Having worked in four countries across 14 different industries, Devine has amassed an impressive knowledge of sales and the most effective selling techniques. Devine now runs a business growth advice and training company, specifically helping business owners that have a proven product or service and need more sales at higher margins. “I have taken the best of everything I’ve learned and packaged it into simple, step-bystep systems that produce predictable results,” Devine said. He continues: “Our typical client will typically win three new high-end accounts in their first year, and gross margins will increase between two and six per cent. They will hire and manage better new business salespeople, and they will protect their best accounts without being forced to discount. “Industry conferences and trade shows such as The Print Show are the best way to identify and leverage trends in our industry. It’s also the best place to look at new pieces of kit that may give you a competitive advantage in your marketplace, or find a piece of production equipment that automates a manual process, or speeds up a time-consuming production job. “There’s only so much you can learn by attending a webinar or reading an industry journal. There is nothing better than walking

the halls of a tradeshow, looking at the various offerings and talking to 10 to 20 vendors in a single day.” Devine added: “If you want to catch up on industry trends as well as seeing the latest innovations in technology, then you must attend The Print Show 2018.”

Finishing the job with quality equipment

Duplo will once again be displaying its DuSense Sensory technology, following a successful preview of the kit last year, as well as some yetto-be-revealed, new solutions. Other highlights on the Duplo stand will include its full range of multi-finishers, a selection of binders and its flagship iSaddle and bookletmaker systems—all with their new developments. Andy Benson, managing director of Duplo UK, comments: “Duplo’s main goal is to demonstrate how we can help add value to print. Of course, we will show some of our latest products as well as enhancements to some our current favourites. “As it becomes increasingly difficult to drag prospective customers away from the harsh commercial reality of 12 or 24 hour deadlines in their businesses. “With a comprehensive and varied supplier base exhibiting, any visitor should achieve a real return on their time from a visit to this show.

“Duplo likes to support the UK industry events and did so with The Print Show in 2017. Being back at the NEC is clearly an advantage for most, given its transport links, and we have agreed to take a stand more than double the size of last year’s to ensure we can show a good representation of the categories and brands we represent in the UK.” Meanwhile, digital equipment and consumables supplier Ashgrove has revealed it will be displaying the new range of Unibind desktop bookbinding and personalisation equipment/consumables. Ashgrove recently teamed up with Peleman to offer the technology, which it says is suitable for printrooms throughout the UK. The first of these new products to launch is the versatile Unifoil Printer, which is able to print high-definition foiled graphics onto a variety of flat, smooth surfaces such as acrylic and leather. The machine is also able to effectively personalise the full range of hardback bookcovers from Unibind. Also, due to come to market in the next few weeks is the Casemaker 650, which is billed as a “unique piece of equipment” as it enables fully bespoke, full colour printed, hard cases for books and ring binders to be created in a few minutes. Ashgrove will be based adjacent to Peleman at The Print Show and demonstrate the full range of Unibind equipment. www.theprintshow.com

Climate Change Levy deadline looms The BPIF has been working hard to get as many eligible companies onto their Climate Change Levy reduction scheme before the deadline on the 31 July 2018. Energy prices are currently going through the roof and this scheme is one of the few ways of mitigating these increases. The BPIF has contacted companies, both members and non-members, with more than 50 employees, in order to explain the application requirements to ensure the industry makes the most of this limited time opportunity. It is estimated that the companies that have already been visited could save a total of £550,000 in the current year. With the levy set to increase considerably next year, that annual saving will rise to £846,971 from April and by not taking the necessary action to join the scheme, those companies could be risking a loss of £3.9m on energy bills over the life of the scheme. It would take a significant amount of customer orders to generate that level of profit — there is also a good chance that your competitors are already enjoying the savings. Steve Walker, Commercial Products Manager, has managed the scheme since its introduction in 2001. He says “I’d encourage companies to take advantage of this opportunity before the end of July. It’s surprising that companies who can save more than £10,000 a year are finding it difficult to spare the resource to complete the paperwork. However we can help do this for companies, so any company that is finding resource an issue just give us a call. Remember upwards of £70,000 over the next five years could be saved under the BPIF CCL reduction scheme, and that’s not a saving to be sniffed at”. Mark Roberts, Managing Director of Acorn Web Offset, whose company is on the scheme explains, “For those with a significant energy spend it’s an absolute no brainer particularly with the BPIFs help in simplifying the governments application processes.” You have nothing to lose! Forest Stewardship Council register The Paperbox

The Paperbox is a card making and wedding stationery supplier based in the rural setting of Easingwold, North Yorkshire. The family run business began in 2009 as a team of two and has since grown to a team of six working in the company’s recently completed, purpose built factory. As the majority of products sold are paper based, The Paperbox is very aware of the environmental impact their business can have and the importance of sustainability. While the company has always carefully selected paper merchants and has bought stock predominantly from FSC certified suppliers and papermills, Operations Director, Ray CallandScoble stated “[that] to move forwards, we needed to take it to the next level and become the next link in the chain of supply for ourselves, our customers and our brand. We wanted to be clear and transparent about the source of our products, which is what certification by the Forest Stewardship Council has given us.” The certification reflects not only their own ethos, but that of many of their customers and local social enterprises who they work closely with. Though The Paperbox has only very recently become FSC certified, the news of certification has been well received on social media platforms and the company has indicated that they expect to see an increase in sales in the next quarter, particularly in the business sector. The products that are now certified include all envelopes and the majority of paper and card stock, which are cut and creased in a range of colours, sizes and styles. PRINT FUTURE

2020 PRINT VISION

PRINT PREDICTIONS: 2020 PRINT VISION

This new regular 2020 Print Vision feature is open to all for print predictions over the next couple of years. The 36,000 quick print pros that, in the front line of the print industry, are so often asked ‘What’s next in print?’ Print management

As digital transformation continues to take hold and businesses look to ways of ensuring an efficient, smooth-running office of the future, technologies such as AI and the Internet of Things tend to take centre stage in most forward-thinking discussions. However, according to Y Soft Corporation, some of the more traditional features of the modern office – such as print management software – still have a key part to play in defining how we carry out our jobs in the future. The office of today is almost unrecognisable from the one that existed thirty years ago, and its ongoing evolution shows no sign of slowing down. Cloud adoption has become commonplace, collaborative apps and tools designed to make working together easier are pervasive, and the proliferation of mobile devices means that many workers have become very much accustomed to doing their jobs on the move. While some technologies, like the fax machine, have become more or less obsolete, there remains a strong requirement for print, so it is important that it is not neglected as part of a digital transformation strategy. Ondrej Krajicek, Chief Technology Strategist at Y Soft, said: “There is a huge amount of potential for the future office to be more efficient and better connected than we ever could have imagined two or three decades ago, and we should be welcoming these new technologies with open arms. However, the ongoing role of print management should not be discounted: moves to make the office paperless have gathered pace in recent years, but demand for the ability to print documents remains high. “Key to ensuring print keeps up with the pace of technological innovation lies in the development of next-generation print management software, which is optimised to

deal with the changing nature of the modern office. This technology has been created with the increasingly paper-light, digitally transformed office in mind, and so emphasises the need to streamline cumbersome processes and increase automation when it comes to administering printing.” While print management will continue to occupy an important position in the office ecosystem, there is still some way to go before the current services on offer are able to match the procedural and financial demands that the future office will place on IT. With this in mind, Krajicek believes that businesses looking to incorporate future-proof print management processes into their wider document management estate should gain a comprehensive awareness of a provider’s future plans for the software before committing, and how these will be compatible with a changing office environment. He added: “Any print management solution that a company adopts should have the future office very much in mind. At the very least, businesses should be looking at a solution that is flexible and adaptable to modern needs. Cloud-based print management software can be hugely beneficial in this respect, as it can help to significantly reduce infrastructure costs by

placing responsibility for server management into the hands of a third-party provider. For SMEs with limited IT resources or expertise, this is especially crucial. Security is also an important element here: given the growing number of devices being used in the workplace and the increasing skill levels of hackers who aim to exploit vulnerabilities in such devices, it is critical that print does not become a weak point through which cybercriminals can infiltrate an organisation. “By taking on board a solution that has the automation of manual processes, streamlined infrastructure management and security in mind, businesses can ensure that print management is able to remain resilient, flexible and adaptable in the midst of our ongoing digital transformation.” www.ysoft.com

HP launches new PageWide Presses

HP Inchas introduced two new six-colour PageWide ultra high-volume inkjet web presses for pre-print corrugated packaging, the HP PageWide T1190 and HP PageWide T1170, offering higher productivity and quality for the world’s most productive digital packaging presses. The new flagship PageWide T1190 Press offers 67% more throughput productivity compared with the current PageWide T1100S, delivering up to 1000 linear feet per minute (305 metres/minute) in six colours at full press speed. The addition of six-colour printing (CMYKOV) also expands the colour gamut for matching colours, opening new digital possibilities for brands, including short-runs, faster turnaround time, and versioning. These ultra-wide 110-inch (2.8m) Thermal Inkjet technology web presses are ideal for

packaging converters seeking analogue to digital transformation with highvolume productivity in offset quality for pre-print corrugated packaging applications. Additionally, the presses use HP A30 true water-based inks, containing no UV-reactive chemistries, and requiring no additional barriers for food packaging applications. HP customers continue to invest in digital — Italy’s Ghelfi Ondulati S.p.A. installed a PageWide T1100S in the summer of 2016, and is now upgrading to the PageWide T1170. “The new six-colour capability of the PageWide T1170 Press will allow us to address a broader colour gamut to help meet the rigorous colour demands of southern Europe’s leading brands,” said Luca Simoncini, digital programme manager, Ghelfi Ondulati S.p.A.. “This colour extension will allow us to open new opportunities, with virtually no quality obstacles.” The PageWide T1170 Press prints 600 linear feet per minute (183 metres/minute) in six colours, compared with four-color printing at the same speed on the PageWide T1100S. Both the T1170 and T1190 presses are suitable for both coated and uncoated media, from 80 gsm to 350 gsm. Additionally, HP Multi-lane Print Architecture (MLPA) boosts plant productivity by splitting the web into multiple print lanes, so different jobs, with different box sizes and run lengths, can be printed in the individual lanes. Multiple ultra-short or short runs can be queued and printed together while a long run is printed in another lane. The first PageWide T1190 Press will be a field upgrade to the T1100S that DS Smith is installing in its Fulda, Germany plant. “The T1190’s industry-leading six colour, highspeed 2.8 wide digital pre-print system will enable new efficiencies for our customers,“ said Stefano Rossi, CEO, DS Smith Packaging. “Plus, with our new six-colour capability, we will expand our gamut and create even greater digital value for brands.”

“We are proud to deliver field upgrades to the PageWide T1100 Press Series just two years after installing the first press with DS Smith Packaging,” said Eric Wiesner, general manager, PageWide Industrial division, HP Inc. “HP’s unique digital pre-print technology continues todisrupt the corrugated package market, driving greater business efficiency for converters and their brands.” HP’s digital pre-print solution helps corrugated converters reduce inventory and accelerate turnaround time, while also enabling more flexibility and smaller order quantities. Handy Labels extends market reach Handy Labels has been going strong since 2007 and last year extended its reach even further with a fresh new website, helping artisan businesses to improve their packaging and accessibility. Running steadily over this decade have been two Roland DG SOLJET Pro 4 XR-640 large format printer/cutters. Martyn Kilford started the company in 2007, mainly offering signage. However, seeing a growing market for labels, the business changed its focus and moved to larger premises in Portishead to accommodate the work. The versatility of the original Roland SOLJET systems enabled an exploration of these new product offerings. “The Rolands really came into their own on labels,” comments Michelle Jones, Business Manager, Handy Labels. “The new website launched in 2017 really showcases what the printers can do.” With minimum print runs of 25 labels and an easy-to-use free design tool on the website — although an in-house graphic design team is available too — Handy Labels attracts small,

artisan businesses alongside some blue-chip brands. Candle companies and gin makers are typical customers — and each one is looking for that unique style and finish to make them stand out. “The Roland SOLJETs handle lots of different material changes in one day and can even be left

working overnight,” says Michelle. “They have, essentially, been running night and day for over a decade and are still going really well. Roland printers just keep printing.” Handy Labels says it has (at the time of writing) printed 88,500,498 labels, with 99.8 per cent of orders dispatched within 48 hours and 42,000 returning customers. “We’re in premises where we can expand – packaging is the next move for us – but don’t want to get too big,” says Michelle. “All of our work is hand finished and we make sure we’re happy with all orders we send out. We’re really proud of what we produce.” The Roland DG SOLJET Pro 4 XR-640 system offers printing and contour-cutting technology in one integrated machine. Eco-solvent inks with metallic and white options make graphics stand out on labels, signage, banners, vehicle wraps, fine art, decals, POP displays and more, making it the ideal machine for print businesses keen to explore new markets. http://bit.ly/Roland-DG-Soljet www.handylabels.co.uk

Xaar plc has been awarded ‘Innovation of the Year’ at the 3D Printing Industry Awards 2018. Xaar received the honour for its High Laydown Technology for Material Jetting, which is at the forefront of the drive to make 3D Printing a mainstream manufacturing process. Voted for by readers of 3D Printing Industry, the awards recognise individuals and enterprises leading the additive manufacturing world. They were announced at a black-tie, gala event at Nuffield Hall in London, UK, on Thursday 17th May, where Xaar were among representatives from more than 60 companies. By ensuring that all the printhead nozzles fire at the same time, High Laydown (HL) Technology from Xaar offers massively increased material deposition rates compared to standard three-cycle printing operation. This enhances speed and productivity and allows for greater volume production speed in 3D Printing. Additionally, HL Technology allows for printing high viscosity fluids enabling the creation of 3D printed parts with higher part properties than other technologies. “As 3D Printing develops to take its place as a mainstream manufacturing process it is clear that certain challenges need to be overcome, and we are very proud that Xaar’s High Laydown Technology addresses two of the main challenges – namely the speed of part manufacture and the properties of parts produced,” comments Neil Hopkinson, Director of 3D Printing at Xaar, and the inventor of High-Speed Sintering. The 3D Printing Industry Awards are an annual gathering of the leaders in additive manufacturing. This year voting was up 35% on 2017, and the shortlists spanned all areas of the 3D printing ecosystem – from medical, aerospace, and creative applications to 3D scanning, software and materials. www.xaar.com

The label was selected by European label industry association FINAT to be put forward for the L9 World Label Awards, having won a FINAT award in the innovation category in September 2017. The label was lauded by the judges for its eye-catching design and impressive technical complexity, featuring fourteen Swarovski crystals embedded within the design. Boxing clever: Celtic’s Brother Walfrid presentation ACA, the Scottish one-stop print finishing operation, has applied its unique expertise to bring a luxury finish to a limited edition boxed set commemorating the life and work of Celtic FC’s founder, Brother Walfrid. It has been produced on behalf of Glasgow arts group The Nine Muses, which owns both brotherwalfridart.co.uk and the 5x4foot original oil painting which sits at the altar of St. Mary’s Church, the second oldest church in the archdiocese of Glasgow. Everyone involved is working alongside, and has the support of St Mary’s Church. The boxed set — limited to 1,888, to reflect the year Celtic FC played its first match — comprises a 60 minute documentary on the life and times of Brother Walfrid, narrated by actor Peter Mullan and directed by BAFTA winner Paul Hineman, as well as an A3 numbered print depiction of Brother Walfrid by top Scots artist Peter Howson. The 3D embossed, matt laminated and spot varnished front of the bespoke luxury presentation box, which features metallic gold printing onto black, giving a bronzed impression, as well as multilayer UV varnishing, displays a reproduction of Howson’s Brother Walfrid. It was at the school attached to St Mary’s Church, where Brother Walfrid spent 1869 to 1874 working as a teacher. In 1887 he set up a

football team to raise money for the ‘penny dinners’ which fed children in his care. That team went on to become Celtic FC, the first British football team to win the European Cup. Joe Keenan, ACA’s Managing Director,

said: “When we discussed the project with the designers, they were taken aback by the production options we knew we had available. Our work has resulted, we believe, in the presentation box being as much a work of art as the painting itself. “I am immensely proud of the ACA team’s extraordinary ability to use techniques like foil embossing and multilayer varnishing to take the Brother Walfrid presentation box from being simply a good product to becoming an exceptional one. “Some designers may not yet be aware of what is possible in today’s world of print finishing. Their printers, expert though they may be, might not necessarily want to suggest any finish that means sending work out, so we would always advise them to speak to an expert finisher about what is possible.” With this in mind, ACA is in the process of arranging a series of open days for members of the advertising and design community to assist a better understanding of what is possible with contemporary print finishing techniques. Both companies are based in Yorkshire, and Dean and Lance first crossed paths in 1998 when Dean got in touch with Lance and introduced L&S Prints to digital sublimation machines. Lance was suitably impressed with the product and the service provided, and that was the start of an extremely fruitful relationship between the two companies that now sees Sabur installing two DGI FT-1908 printers into L&S Prints. Lance commented on the development of the relationship between the two companies; “The machines we had from Sabur gave us a solid bedrock from which we have built a fantastic business; growing from four to twenty employees, with more to come as we continue to expand. The machines may be the right tool for the job, but the confidence that comes from dealing with Sabur is priceless. The knowledge and expertise that Dean, Aaron and the team provide is part of the purchase and nothing is too much trouble for them. Smooth installation, expertise, and superb customer care — they’ve

been excellent!” Just like Sabur Ink Systems Ltd, L&S Prints are a company that serves a wide variety of clients from a wide variety of industries. Founded in 1990, they have over 100 years of professional experience and have been dye sublimation printing for any number of prestigious clients for over 33 years. So, it’s safe to say that they have an in-depth understanding of the processes and technology involved in large format digital printing. Experience, expertise and excellent service comes as standard. And just like Sabur Ink Systems Ltd, L&S Prints are evolving and growing, too. The new L&S Prints Ltd website (http:// britishmade.gifts/) will only showcase the company’s own products — not fabric — allowing customers to choose from a range of pre-designed products or create their own custom designs from start to finish. And one of

the most exciting sections of the new website is the 3D element, whereby users can literally see every angle of the product whilst editing the design. This gives it a ‘real-time’ experience and the product will then be printed and made exactly how it is seen on the screen. As well as a new website, the company has purchased two DGI FT-1908 sublimation printers from Sabur. This is what Lance Dentith had to say about this; “We feel that the two DGI FT-1908 printers will help L&S Prints to increase our work flow and take on more orders, as they print faster than any machine we have had before. So, we expect our turnaround time to be greatly reduced, too. “Not only are they faster, up until now we have only had the means to print up to approximately 1.5 metres wide, therefore the wider printers will enable us to create more products and fill even more customer requirements; contributing to the growth of the business.” It’s something that Dean Sanger concurs with; “The DGI FT-1908 is a superb product. It has eight state of the art Panasonic print heads, a variable droplet and easy fill bulk ink system, and also a built-in drying system, so it will suit L&S Prints perfectly as it will help capacity and reduce production costs.” www.lsprints.co.uk www.sublimationinks.com

Macro Art’s Durst revolution Wide format service provider Macro Art started live printing recently with two more Durst machines as new customers come on board in continuing rapid expansion. Little more than four years after a management buyout, Macro Art’s turnover has shot up from £6million to £11million. Contract gains are being secured on the back of the new investments in Durst systems - now totalling four that have revolutionised its business. The Durst Rho P10 250 HS-Plus UV hybrid system and Durst Rho 512R-Plus roll-to-roll UV printer were installed at Macro Art’s base in Abbotsley, Cambridgeshire. The Rho 512R, which includes fine art mode, will enable Macro Art to produce fine quality backlit work. Macro Art, which specialises in larger project and dye sublimated textiles, will be using the machines across its core areas of business. These include events, exhibition and retail sectors where ever shorter lead times and higher print quality are demanded by customers. Michael Green, Macro Art’s Commercial Director, who is based in its project management office near Waterloo in London, said: “Durst kit has revolutionised our business. The investments have enabled us to step into quality markets that were unobtainable before. We would not be where we are today without the Durst equipment. No argument. We could not have done without them. “As one example, the investments will help with backlit work commissioned by a major new retail client that requires top quality print in a very short lead time. And in another we could never have created 60% of the exterior printing for an international air show within the

agreed timeframe without our 5m Rho. Print requirements and delivery, even to Europe, are now as little as 48 hours. With the new investments, we are incredibly excited about the potential opportunities ahead.” The P10, often referred to by customers as the “benchmark in quality, production and reliability”, will replace another manufacturer’s equipment and ramp up capacity. There were also environmental considerations for the Rho 5m printer, which will also benefit from lower ink by using Durst flexible inks. The company already has Rho 512R and Durst Rho 322 production printers. Peter Bray, Managing Director of Durst UK and Ireland, said: “We’re confident that these new investments in our systems will help take their business to yet another level. Macro Art is a perfect example of how companies really engage with the Durst ethos when they visit Lienz or our head office less than two hours away in Brixen, Northern Italy. Durst is a special company producing fantastic products and software.” www.durst-group.com

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Plug It In

Husband: Look dear, I just bought us one of those plug-in air fresheners but for some reason it’s not working. Wife: It’s not plugged in. Husband: You mean I have to plug it in for it to start freshening the air? Wife: It’s a plug-in air freshener. How can it work if you don’t plug it in? Husband: It makes no scents!

Sweet Pirate

A pirate walks into a bar with a coconut and a cocoa bean on his head, sits down and orders a drink. Bartender serves the pirate his drink, and asks about the nuts on his head. The pirate smiles and says, “That be the bounty on me head!”

Some things in life just never add up

An Indian chief Sitting Bull had three squaws, each of whom he got pregnant at the same time. His first squaw gave birth to a boy and Sitting Bull was so happy he built her a tepee made of deer hide. A few days later, the second gave birth, also to a boy. Again, the chief was delighted so he built her a tepee made of antelope hide. The third squaw gave birth a few days later, but this time the chief kept the details a secret. He built the third wife a two story tepee, made out of hippopotamus hide and then challenged the tribe to guess what had occurred. Many tried, but nobody could work out what had happened. Finally, one young man declared that the third wife had given birth to twin boys. “That’s true,” said Sitting Bull. “How did you figure it out?” The man answered, “It’s simple – the value of the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides.”

Which Cut

My wife asked me before going to the hairdressers, “What cut do you think would make me more attractive?” “A power cut” was apparently the wrong answer.

World Cup Winner

I gave my wife £200 and told her to go out on Thursday and leave me in peace to watch the World Cup. “I won’t need that much,” she laughed. “You will,” I said. “It’s got to last you five weeks.”

Occupation

“What does your father do for a living?” asked the school secretary on the first day of the new academic year. “He’s a magician, miss” said little Ben. “How interesting. What’s his favourite trick?” “He saws people in half.” “Wow! Now, next question. Any brothers or sisters?” “One half brother and two half sisters.”

Having a Daughter

Daughter: “Dad, when will I be old enough to go to the movies with a boy?” Dad: “When you’re a year older than your brother.” The daughter thought for a moment and replied: “But I’ll never be older than my brother, he was born first.” Dad: “I guess there’s your answer. But don’t blame me, go talk to your brother.”

Fate Bought Me Those Shoes

A woman had bought lots of shoes over time and she decided it was time to kick the habit. She really took it seriously, even changing her driving route to avoid her favourite shoe store. One evening, however, she arrived home carrying a shoe box. Her husband grinned at her, but it didn’t faze her at all. “These are very special shoes,” she explained. “I accidentally drove by the shoe store and there in the window were the most perfect shoes I’ve ever seen! I felt this was no accident, so I thought I’d let fate decide. If I could get a parking spot directly in front of the shop, the shoes were meant for me. And sure enough, the eighth time around the block, there it was!”

Inferiority Complex

An actress who suffered from an inferiority complex was complaining to her psychiatrist. “I’m a nothing!” she cried. “I can’t sing. I can’t remember my lines. I can’t dance, I can’t even act. I really don’t belong in show business.” “Why don’t you quit?” the doctor asked. “I can’t,” moaned the actress. “I’m a Star!”

I say, do you fancy a few shorts?

I called work this morning and whispered, “Sorry boss, I can’t come in today. I have a wee cough.” He exclaimed, “You have a wee cough?” I said, “Really? Thanks boss, see you next week!” I went to the doctor’s with hearing problems. He said “Can u describe the symptoms?” I said “Homers a fat bloke and Marge has blue hair” Took the shell off my racing snail this weekend. I thought it might speed him up. If anything, it made him more sluggish. Retrospectively, I wish I’d bought my baked beans online. Heinz’s site is a wonderful thing! What do you call a singing laptop? A Dell.

More shots, sorry more shorts

How do you kill a circus clown? Go for the juggler! Plastic surgery used to be such a taboo subject. Nowadays if you talk about botox nobody raises an eyebrow. Dad: Why have you got a lion and a witch in your wardrobe? Son: “It’s Narnia business”. Found out I was colour blind yesterday. To be honest it came a bit out of the green. What does a thesaurus have for Breakfast? A Synonym Roll.

Bargain

I saw this advert in a window that said: “TV for sale, £1, volume stuck on full.” I thought, “I can’t turn that down.”

Swift Short

WTF is an acronym.

Pre-Press Service call

I was having trouble with my computer at work so I called IT Support. He said, “Have you tried disabling cookies?” I said, “Well, I once bit the legs off a gingerbread man?”

Just a couple more chasers So I’ve started a sarcasm club. It would mean the world to me if you joined. Just bought some Viagra tea bags. They don’t improve your sex life, but they stop your biscuits going soft. Just broke two of my Dad’s old Queen records! Now I want to break three. I’ve trained my dog to bring me red wine. She’s a Bordeaux Collie. Someone just asked me to sing any line from “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” I couldn’t if I tried.

Spanish Magician

A Spanish magician tells the audience he will disappear on the count of three. He says: “Uno, dos....”*Whoosh! He disappeared without a tres.

Mystery Surprise

How many mystery writers does it take to change a light bulb? Two, one to put it almost all the way in and the other to give it a surprising twist at the end.

Time Separates

“Time separates the best of friends,” said one women to another. “How true,” replied the other. “Twenty years ago we were fifteen, now you’re thirty-five and I’m twenty-nine!”

A Joke of Little Value

Did you hear about the mathematician who’s afraid of negative numbers? He will stop at nothing to avoid them.

I Think I’m A Moth

“Doctor, I think I’m a moth.” “It’s not a doctor you need, it’s a psychiatrist.” “I was on my way there when I saw your light on.”

Truth hurts

I have had a perfectly wonderful evening but tonight with you wasn’t it.

Cure For Lateness

Bob had this problem of getting up late in the morning and was always late for work. After a few weeks of this, his boss was mad and threatened to sack him if he didn’t do something about it. So Bob went to his doctor, who gave him a pill and told him to take it before he went to bed. He got a great night’s sleep and actually beat the alarm in the morning. After a leisurely breakfast, he cheerfully drove to work. “Boss,” he said, “the pill my doctor subscribed me actually worked!” “That’s all fine,” said the boss, “But where were you yesterday?”

My Girlfriend Isn’t Talking to Me My girlfriend isn’t talking to me because apparently I ruined her birthday. Not sure how I did that. I didn’t even know it was her birthday!

Who’s To Blame

The recent volcano eruptions in Kilauea and Volcan de Fuego prompted representatives all over the globe to have an Earthquake Summit. When San Adreas arrived everyone pointed fingers and said, “It’s your fault!”

Scrambled or Hard Boiled? “What have you had for breakfast?” I asked my wife on the first day of her diet. “Eggs,” she said. “Scrambled or hard boiled?” I asked. “No, Cadbury Creme,” she replied.

Google is so useless.

Honeymoon period

One night at the dinner table, the wife commented, “When we were first married, you took the small piece of steak and gave me the larger. Now you take the large one and leave me the smaller. You don’t love me any more?” “Nonsense, darling,” replied the husband, “you just cook better now.”

Sorry, let me explain

A woman stood inside the front door, her arms full of coats. Four small children scurried around her. Her husband, coming down the stairs, asked why she was standing there. “Here,” she said, handing him the coats. “This time you put the children into their coats, and I’ll go sound the horn.”

My Wife Called

My wife called. She said, “The two kids want you to take them bowling on Saturday, then afterwards they want you to take them to the cinema.” “It’s either one or the other,” I said. “Otherwise it’s too expensive.” “OK” she replied. “Which one do you prefer?” I said, “David!”

Wish list

Guy tells his wife: For your birthday, how about a new car? Wife: No. Guy: How about a new boat? Wife: No. Guy: Well then, what do you want? Wife: I want a divorce. Guy: I wasn’t planning on spending that much money.

I tried to look up lighters.

Miracle Cure

Doctor Bloomfield, who was known for extraordinary treatment of arthritis, had a waiting room full of people when a little old lady, almost bent over in half, shuffled in slowly, leaning on her cane. When her turn came, she went into the doctor’s office and, amazingly, emerged within five minutes walking completely erect with her head held high. A woman in the waiting room who had seen all this rushed up to the little old lady and said, “It’s a miracle! You walked in bent in half and now you’re walking erect. What did that doctor do?” “Gave me a longer cane.”

My learned friend

A young pupil asked, “Master, what is fate.” “Ah, my son, it is what has brought great nations together. It has made the world a smaller place in which to live. It has inspired men of worth to work endless hours. It will some day enable men to span the universe and light years of travel will soon become mere seconds in time.” “And that, my master, is fate?” “Oh, fate! I thought you said freight.”

The Anxious Poodle

Poodle: “My life is a mess. My owner is mean, my girlfriend is leaving me for a German Shepherd, and I’m as nervous as a cat.” Collie: “Why don’t you go see a psychiatrist?” Poodle: “I can’t. I’m not allowed on the couch.”

And all they had...

Lost Art of Conversation

My television set broke so I was forced to rely on the lost art of conversation with the wife at dinner. “Have you seen the iPad, love?”

Overworked Postman

My friend asked me to help him with his crossword puzzle as he was struggling with four across. “What’s the clue?” I asked. “Overworked postman,” he said. “How many letters?” “Thousands!”

Retired Engineer

There was an engineer who had an exceptional gift for fixing all things mechanical. After serving his company over 30 years, he retired. Several years later the company contacted him with a problem they were having with one of their glorified copying machines they called a digital press. They had tried everything and everyone else to get the machine fixed, but to no avail. In desperation, they called on the retired engineer who had solved so many of their problems in the past. The engineer reluctantly took the challenge. He spent a day studying the huge machine. At the end of the day, he marked a small “x” in chalk on a particular component of the machine and proudly stated, “This is where your problem is.” The part was replaced and the machine worked perfectly again. The company received a bill for £10,000 from the engineer for his service. They demanded an itemised account of his charges. The engineer responded with the following account: Chalk: £1.00. Knowing where to put the ‘X’: £9,999.

...was about 15,000 matches.
