Outstanding Scottish print industry apprentices Print Scotland, the trade association and voice of Scotland’s graphic communication industry, has held its fourth annual Scottish Print Apprentice of the Year awards. The occasion is part of its mission to represent the Scottish print community and to highlight the profile of future leaders of the industry. Garry Richmond, Director of Print Scotland, said: “There is, without question, a widespread recognition that we need to employ more apprentices to sustain Scotland’s print sector and the need to encourage more apprentices from an increasingly diverse range of backgrounds entering our industry. “The sterling efforts of our leading young apprentices in getting to grips with the challenges of a rewarding career in print and print finishing are being acknowledged with these awards.” The winners of the 2019 Apprentice of the Year Awards were: Overall Apprentice of Year — James Taylor, Bell & Bain (Glasgow); Level 3 Pre Press — Erin McCarthy, Amer Sports, (North Ayrshire); Level 3 Post Press — James McCredie, Bell & Bain (Glasgow); Level 3 Press Administration, Louise Docherty, Bell and Bain, (Glasgow); and Level 3 Press — Arran Rennie, Publicity Printing, (Glasgow) The awards event in Glasgow, attended by

family and friends of the winners, sponsors such as Antalis, HP and Muller Martini, and a cross-section of Print Scotland members, was addressed by Print Scotland’s President, Kevin Creechan, MD of J Thomson Colour Printers, who congratulated the winners and wished them highly successful careers as the industry’s leaders of tomorrow. He said: “The print industry in Scotland has a real future across a range of skill-sets and needs a constant flow of high-quality and motivated apprentices in even greater numbers, and from

an increasingly diverse range of backgrounds, to fulfil its potential. The high-calibre young people we have celebrated today is very much what our industry needs.” Print Scotland provides training for Modern Apprentices through the Scottish Training Scheme, which provides a grant from the Scottish Government to cover the cost of the training. Soyang lead the way with PVC Recycling initiative An innovative print waste recycling partnership has been developed and set up by printable material manufacturer and distributor Soyang Europe, along with waste management specialists Blue Castle, to offer a much sought after solution to the industry’s PVC waste dilemma that will pioneer the use of PVC banner material as an environmentally sustainable substrate. The PVC Recycling Membership Scheme has been a long time in the making, as Soyang Europe’s managing director, Mark Mashiter describes; “The PVC Recycling Scheme is the first step towards a very real recycling solution to the use of PVC banner material, which is widely used within the printing industry, but not currently recyclable. The demand for print providers and their customers to consider the environmental impact of the print they produce is a hot topic and we’ve been in discussions with our customers about the need for this for some years, which until now has seemed unattainable. Now we’re delighted to be able to reveal that, thanks to the dedication and specialist knowledge brought to the table by Blue Castle Group, we can offer PVC waste recycling to our customers through a one of a kind scheme.” Blue Castle Group is an established waste and energy consultancy based in Lincolnshire that has developed and rigorously tested the machinery needed to convert PVC banner into a reusable format. The company’s CEO, Marie Harley, explains how the project has developed; “Our team has worked tirelessly to not only cultivate a workable solution for PVC waste recycling, but also to strengthen relationships with partner companies capable of using this material once it has been processed and broken down. Reaching the point of viability with the project is an incredibly exciting time for the team at Blue Castle and for our partners at

Soyang Europe. We’re here to disrupt the printing industry!” Blue Castle’s PVC recycling plant is located near to the company’s Head Office in Lincolnshire, where, in its simplest form, a team puts the PVC waste through an industrial sized shredding machine to break it down into a re-processable size. “We have extensively tested the PVC banner material, establishing critical elements such as its flash point and chemical properties,” expands Harley. “We’ve explored many options for using the shredded PVC and thanks to strong partner relationships in other sectors, we have developed lines of supply to ensure the processed banner material has viable future uses in a range of industries.” Print providers and sign makers currently using PVC based substrates could very easily be accessing this green credentials enhancing and cost saving scheme. “We would encourage anyone currently offering a PVC banner printing provision to get in touch with the team at Soyang Europe to discuss how the PVC Recycling Membership Scheme can benefit their printing business,” Mashiter concludes. www.soyang.co.uk/recycle 0161 765 3400 www.bluecastle.co.uk/pvc 01400 283888.

Diana Thompson to step down from major PR After 35 years in print as a journalist and PR consultant Diana Thompson, managing director of Plus Point PR, has decided to take a break. She is stepping down from the Epson account this month and, after a fantastic 25 year relationship with Heidelberg UK, will part ways at the end of September. “My daughter Sophie has the opportunity to study abroad and is going to Singapore for the autumn term. I plan to join her there in November and we will travel together in Australia and New Zealand, returning late in January,” says Diana. “On my return Plus Point PR will continue to handle work for Picon, the graphic arts suppliers’ organisation, and IST (UK), leading supplier of UV systems, but otherwise will only take on small contracts and ad hoc business. “I am the fifth generation of my family in print and I have been extremely proud to report

on and promote an industry that is creative, innovative and which has an impact on all our lives. I love the fact that printers, and indeed those who write about it, compete hard but also pursue their business in a professional and friendly manner.” Epson will make an announcement about a new PR agency partner shortly and Heidelberg UK will announce the appointment of a new marketing manager, who will handle all aspects of promotion including the PR, social media and events. “Heidelberg UK was my first client and I am immensely proud to have worked with a series of excellent managing directors — Wolfgang Gorth, George Clarke, Gerard Heanue and now Ryan Miles — as well as wonderful people from the top to the bottom of the organisation. “I have worked with Epson for the past two years and that has taken me into new areas of

print, even fashion and promotional products, which has been fascinating. It is a very innovative company.” Diana Thompson, Plus Point PR Ltd. 01494 817178 or 07802 898313.

Baker Labels new Truepress Jet L350UV+ LM

The first major investment of 2019 for Baker Labels is a Truepress Jet L350UV+LM. This is an updated version of the current Truepress inkjet printer already in place at Bakers. The L350UV+LM offers an increased colour gamut including orange ink along with the C, M, Y, K set and white ink. Orange ink enables richer reproduction of vivid colours, adding to the visual appeal of fruits and other foods. The new press also offers low migration inks improving safety for food package labels plus it benefits from a chill roller that increases stability for thin materials and unsupported films. This will allow Bakers to offer a significant increase in the range of packaging and label applications that can be printed. Following the expansion of the Brentwood factory premises in 2018, Bakers has increased floor capacity by 50% and managing director Steve Baker has been keen to make the most of the increased space and expand and explore future packaging options and capabilities. This £500,000+ investment is just the beginning. “This is a top piece of kit and perfect for our continuing efforts to improve the quality and service we offer our trade customers.” Steve Baker, managing director at Baker Labels.

From left: Steve Baker, Managing Director; Jamie Doogan, Commercial Manager; Paul Sykes, Production Manager; Steve Baker, Managing Director; Phil Smith, General Manager BakPac; and Jamie Godson, Technical Manager

The Truepress Jet L350UV+ is able to print the finest of detail, capturing the highest definition and the smallest of text point size, crucial on pharmaceutical and cosmetic labels. In addition, its incredibly stable transport mechanism tightly controls paper feeding to maintain optimal transfer conditions. This precision is essential for producing detailed dot codes such as QR and barcodes, as well as any other security printing requiring a high level of accuracy The new Truepress Jet 350UV+ will print alongside the current Truepress purchased in 2015, three HP Indigo WS6900s and the Nilpeter FB3. All of which are supported by quality finishing on a range of AB Graphic Digicon finishers including the two Series 3 presses purchased in 2018. www.bakerlabels.co.uk

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a copier on a crane!

National managed print service provider Midshire® is excited to share that on Wednesday 29th May its logistics team went ‘above and beyond’, ensuring its latest machine move was delivered efficiently and effectively. Carried out for long term customer Renaker Build Ltd, three Midshire employees used a crane to lift a Sharp MX-4140 from the construction company’s Manchester City Centre site on Chester Road, to River View on New Bailey Street. Solutions Systems Integrator at Midshire, Adam Taylor was leading the move, he said: “I’ve been networking Renaker’s machines

since 2016, we’re always moving their machines from one building site to another as they get completed, it’s just the nature of what they do.” A customer since 2008, Renaker has been enriching Manchester’s skyline for over 13 years. Current projects include those at Chester Road, Crown Street, and Deansgate Square, and a planned development on Great Jackson Street, which will see the formation of 25 skyscrapers. Adam continued: “Hefty office equipment can be difficult to navigate around narrow, half finished stairways and porta cabins, so someone suggested putting the machine in a tonne bag designed to lift JCBs and craning it over! In all my years working at Midshire,

everybody’s ‘can do’ attitude and ability to think outside the box never ceases to amaze me.” Julian Stafford, Managing Director at Midshire said: “We’ve always had to do tricky machine moves, and I’m very happy to see our specialists doing whatever it takes to get the job done properly! I think they were in and out in under an hour which is fantastic.” With Renaker’s next phase due for completion in the coming weeks, the craned-in photocopier shall fly again! For all machine moves, please contact their logistics team on 0161 494 3370, alternatively use the customer support portal on the website: www.midshire.co.uk

Five Castles Horizon Stitchliner MK III The Five Castles Press has invested in a Horizon StitchLiner MKIII to elevate its production capacity following the acquisition of nearby printer. Robert Burnett, managing director of the Ipswich general commercial printer, explains: “We recently bought a local printing company and needed to increase our production to handle the additional workload which included A4 landscape work.” The long standing IFS customer traded in a Horizon Stitchliner 5500 with 4 VAC-600 collating towers. Says Burnett: “When we first saw the Horizon StitchLiner 5500 a stand out feature was its ability to collate our flat sheet and eight page signatures for PUR binding. It combined a number of processes quickly and effectively.” He continues: “In 2018 we visited Horizon Germany on one of the VIP visits and had a demonstration of the new Horizon StitchLiner MKIII. We were so amazed by the increased production and its A4 landscape capability that we put it on our shopping list. “We investigated the benefits further and, in particular, were delighted by the trade in valuation of the Horizon StitchLiner 5500. It made the decision to upgrade very easy.” The new book production line joins a Horizon BQ-470PUR with Meler premelter, a Perfecta 92 guillotine for book trimming and a Horizon CRF-362 creaser folder. The next generation StitchLiner Mark III builds on the hugely successful innovative StitchLiner series. Complete with servo drive

technology, the system runs at a maximum speed of 6,000bph and up to 12,000bph with two up production. It is also capable of producing A4 landscape booklets at speeds of up to 5,300bph. Equipped with a large 12.1” HD colour touch screen there is also quicker and more precise knife movement and variable thickness production as standard with new Hohner 52/8S stitching heads. It is already making a positive impact adds Burnett: “The MKIII has been in for a couple of months and it has excelled our expectations with increased production. Our staff just love using the machine.” Pictured: Five Castles’ James Burnett and the Horizon StitchLiner MK III www.ifsl.uk.com

Global debut of Mimaki Hybrid textile printer Mimaki Engineering has announced that it will showcase its broad portfolio of cutting edge digital print technologies at ITMA 2019 (20-26 June 2019, Fira de Barcelona, Spain). This will include the first global showing of a brand new hybrid digital textile printer, uniquely featuring both direct to textile and direct to transfer print capabilities. Crucially, these features enable textile and garment manufacturers to achieve unparalleled flexibility and enhanced application opportunities for increased business growth. To facilitate these benefits, the new Mimaki printer also allows multiple sets of inks to be loaded simultaneously, supporting increased fabric range versatility and maximum product variety. As the future of textile printing and for further production benefits, Mimaki will also give a sneak preview of its new and upcoming TA Job Controller software, specifically designed for textile production environments. For use on Mimaki’s successful, EDP award winning Tiger Pro Series and Rimslow TR Series as well as all other Mimaki textile printers, TA Job Controller enables users to connect one on one to the RIP and other devices, for an automated workflow from design to pre-print, print and post print processes. Featuring pioneering inkjet printing equipment, advanced workflow software and top performance inks, Mimaki will demonstrate how its long term commitment to the textile arena and extensive investment in R&D can help textile print service providers to boost their business. It will also show them how they can cut their production costs and diversify their offering to maintain competitiveness. A not to be missed highlight on the Mimaki stand (H3-B110), visitors will also see the company’s flagship industrial digital textile printer, the Mimaki Tiger-1800B MkII running in dye-sublimation configuration. Combining Mimaki’s Japanese expertise in electronics with La Meccanica’s know how in building solid and robust belt printer bodies with ‘made-in-Italy’ design, the Tiger-1800B MkII — the latest model of Tiger-1800B Series — enables users to produce extremely high quality products (up to 1,200x1,200 dpi resolution) at up to 385 sq m/h print speed, without the need to compromise on production and throughput. The Tiger-1800B MkII features a number of pioneering Mimaki core technologies, including MAPS (Mimaki Advanced Pass System) and NRS (Nozzle Recovery System). MAPS prevents banding and colour shifting during the printing process by spreading the edge of each pass to create a gradient. This feature, alongside NRS, enables the printer to replace nozzles without stopping production - enhancing the printer’s

performance and boosting productivity and print quality for the user. From its advanced TR series, Mimaki will also show the TR300-1850C coating machine and the TR300-1850S steaming machine and the benefits of a total solution for textile print production. Providing the equipment needed to operate the entire digital textile workflow, Mimaki’s all in one solution ensures complete technology compatibility, as well as increased productivity, print quality and reduced production costs. “As a pioneer in textile printing, this industry has always been in our company’s DNA and we are excited to show our extensive textile portfolio at ITMA 2019,” comments Danna Drion, Marketing Manager EMEA, Mimaki Europe “The potential of digital printing in textiles is clearly evident, and we aim to provide the technology to enable our customers to take full advantage of it and grow profitably.” Mimaki will also use ITMA 2019 to showcase its wide range of flagship solutions addressing different textile market segments. These include the Mimaki TS55-1800, a dye-sublimation business enhancing printer that addresses the entry and mid-level markets offering continuous operation and an unprecedented price quality ratio. Equipped with Mimaki’s core technologies, the printer achieves high productivity and high quality print with vibrant colours and vivid imagery and is suitable for interior fabrics, sports and fashion apparel and soft signage. Mimaki will also show its UCJV300-160 roll-to-roll UV LED integrated printer/cutter, featuring white ink capability. A versatile printing system, the UCJV300-160 uniquely enables four layer printing for transformative backlit applications, and five layer printing, allowing different designs to be viewed on both sides of a substrate simultaneously. Visitors at ITMA 2019 will see the UCJV300-160 printing wallpapers live. www.hybridservices.co.uk

Flexible Horizon SPF-200L helps Alba Printers Dumfries general commercial printer Alba Printers has enhanced its flexible finishing production with investment in a highly automated Horizon SPF-200L bookletmaker and two VAC-1000 tower collators from IFS. John Currie, Managing Director, explains: “The time had come to replace our aging existing bookletmaker. We chose the Horizon SPF200L for the flexibility of work it can produce and its ability to produce A4 landscape booklets.” He continues: “I viewed the Horizon SPF 200L at a trade show and was impressed with its capabilities over our existing system.” “The new installation will provide efficiency savings through quicker turnaround times,” adds John. “It also means we can retain all bookletmaking inhouse to make time and cost savings.” The 4,500bph Horizon SPF-200L combines stitching and folding with the ability to feed A4 landscape sheets up to 640mm in length. New growth wave with Accuriolabel 230 launch Konica Minolta has launched the AccurioLabel 230, the latest version of its highly successful digital toner press, to bring numerous benefits for customers including; productivity, flexibility and stability as it continues to accelerate its presence within digital label printing. The easy to operate Konica Minolta AccurioLabel 230, which will be officially shown in public for the first time at Labelexpo in Brussels, Belgium, from 24-27 September, will meet growing market needs for shorter runs and increased customisation. Shipments have already started for the new label press (that from the outside looks identical to its predecessor), the Konica Minolta AL190, which has been developed and manufactured in Europe with Danish firm Grafisk Maskinfabrik (GM). The enhancements of the Konica Minolta four colour AL230 include: Increased speed. The 23.4 metres/min print speed represents up to 147% increase, with most coated/uncoated papers, PP and PET media now able to be printed at full speed. Productivity. Continuous highest quality 1200 x 1200 dpi print runs of up to 1,000 metres can be achieved without the need for recalibration. The time taken between jobs has also been eliminated, increasing productivity further. Overprinting. Adding this option allows the AL230 to print seamlessly on pre-printed media, for example overprinting of flexo white pre-printed on clear PP labels. More accurate print registration. A built-in speed detector for media feeding also cuts paper wastage

The AccurioLabel 230 has been built on the Konica Minolta highly acclaimed AccurioPress engine technology well known for its exceptional print quality and media compatibility. It is targeted at small and mid range segments and is suitable for label printers, print providers, brand owners, packaging companies and commercial printers. Jon Pritchard, Industrial Print Business Unit Leader of Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK) Ltd, said, “With over 350 installations of the predecessor to the AccurioLabel 230, the core technology is proven worldwide. The AccurioLabel 230 robust and simple to operate/maintain concept makes for the perfect entry level digital label press, with productivity and print quality performance to match and exceed presses over three times the cost. This is truly the most capable CYMK digital label press in the market, when considering performance and investment. Printers looking at entering the digital label market no longer have to compromise on media width, speed or quality. Whilst the AL230 has the price tag of an entry level press, its performance and flexibility allows it to compete with the long standing digital label presses in the market. If automation is required then the fully integrated inline semi rotary label finishing solution gives ultimate productivity advantage. The AccurioLabel 230 is the true no compromise entry level label press.” www.konicaminolta.co.uk

HP establishes Digital Pack Print Consortium HP introduced Digital Pack, the world’s first brand focused digital print networking group for corrugated packaging and display, at the 2019 Digital Print for Packaging conference in Orlando. The Digital Pack community was formed to help develop stronger collaboration between HP converters and global and regional brands. The association brings together corrugated converters in North America and Western Europe that own and operate high volume HP PageWide corrugated presses. In the future, the network will expand to other regions to extend its global reach. “Digital Pack’s objective is to make digital print easier and better for brands,” said Jim Beard, COO of Vanguard Packaging, a Digital Pack founding member company. “Our multiregional association intends to meet brands’ high standards for corrugated graphics colour, process management, and digital print quality. The goal of Digital Pack is to enable brand to succeed through digitally printed graphics packaging and displays, empowering them with speed, efficiency, and agility for successful marketing and supply chain

outcomes. The association meets regularly in North American and European locations to pursue and develop new ways to add value to brands’ corrugated procurement experiences. Among the initiatives will be the delivery of educational programmes, white papers, videos, and other tools to inform and inspire brands on value opportunities with digital print. Work will also be conducted to simplify the art file creation process, prepress workflow, and print manufacturing processes to meet brands’ rigorous quality requirements. Included in this development path is each converter’s ability to

leverage and scale HP’s technology solutions and services across the Digital Pack network. Educational content for brands will be continuously developed and updated on the organisation’s website digitalpack.com, including case studies of successful digital print corrugated campaigns and projects. Brands will be encouraged to revisit the website frequently to learn about the newest applications, to be inspired by other brands’ success stories, and to connect directly to a Digital Pack member company of their preference. www.hp.com

No gamble Polar finds lottery ticket printer A Newcastle printer who has already booked his flights to drupa next year can’t wait until then to invest. Acquisition of local trade printers since last November has resulted in rapid growth and so next month Crystal & Son will install a Polar 78 ECO. “Last drupa I bought a really affordable guillotine but my operators have only used it as a table to stack work on ready to go on the Polar despite my attempts to get them to use it,” says Jonathon Crystal, managing director. “So this time we looked at second-hand but Heidelberg gave us an attractive finance arrangement that allowed us to buy new.” Crystal & Son operates in a very price sensitive market, the supply of bingo tickets, raffle tickets, scratch cards and fundraising print generally as well as stationery which is destined primarily for working men’s clubs. It even supplements the print with other supplies from markers to wristbands. Over the last 12 months the company has increased staffing from eight to 19 as it has acquired more work by absorbing rival businesses. It has taken over West View Printers, Bingo Ticket Company and Lucky Lotteries and for these the work has come in house. It has also bought Kelly’s Eye but that is still operating as a separate trading entity. “The operators are absolutely delighted with the investment,” says Mr Crystal. “It is the Rolls Royce of guillotines, with the best reputation

for quality and reliability. This will eliminate the bottlenecks in our plant and keep our service levels up to standard.” The new guillotine will operate flexible days shifts, typically 8am to 5pm. Failing to see everything he needed to from his one day trip to drupa 2016, Mr Crystal has

booked flights and accommodation for next June to ensure he gets a full two days at drupa 2020. He hopes for other good deals from Polar there but says he will also review other products for the small, cost efficient printer. Jonathon Crystal,Crystal & Son: 0191-262 4056. www.heidelberg.com

Smith’s new arrival bounces with vibrant colour The arrival of an Epson SureColor SC-S80600 large format printer has opened up a new dimension to Smith Sign & Display that will significantly enhance the company’s trade print offering. With its ten colour process the SC-S80600, comes with separate spot colours of red and orange ink cartridges, and allows colour printing in white and metallics. “The white option is great when creating window graphics on optically clear film, as a much better quality and clarity of image can be achieved,” explains Smith’s head of marketing, Chris Bradley. “And the separate red and orange ink cartridges, mean that red and orange shades can be matched to PANTONE and special corporate colours with an extremely high degree of accuracy.” The Epson SureColour SC-S80600 solvent inkjet printer uses Epson’s own UltraChrome GS3 ink to create vivid results for a variety of indoor and outdoor applications, from simple signage to banners, point of sale, window graphics, vehicle wraps, high end displays

and décor over a wide range of substrates from paper to film and textiles. The fast drying properties of the inks also means that faster turnaround times can be achieved. “Running alongside our existing HP Latex technology, the Epson solvent printer enables

us to offer an even wider range of services to our trade print customers,” concludes Bradley. For further information about Smith’s trade print offering please contact Kyle Giles: kyle@ williamsmith.co.uk www.smith-signdisplay.co.uk

PIXEL PROPHET

GREAT EXPECTATIONS The problems of resolving size and resolution issues has been a continual theme in this column since the dawn of digital information, and that shows no sign of changing anytime soon, despite its almost complete adoption as a means of transferring images and artwork. In fact, as Martin Christie suggests, the gulf between those who use it and those who understand it has grown ever wider, and is likely to continue to do so.

Above: what the customer wants…

[B]

efore digital it was all so simple. You had a hard copy of a certain size and you had to go to a professional to get it turned into print. When computers and electronic mail arrived many so called experts predicted the demise of printing altogether. That didn’t happen, nor did things change overnight. What did happen is that people who needed them bought computers to use at home, along with a basic scanner and printer, so that they could do a lot of the preparation work without going back and forth to the print shop with time consuming major or minor changes. At the same time software companies — I’ll mention them in the second part of this column — were giving birth to programs that would enable them to do a more personal job in a more economical manner. I mention this to set the scene, and fill in the history for readers who have come freshly into a print industry already dominated by the mobile phone. These portable devices have transformed the way we interact dramatically, and not always for the good. What they have created is what I have described before as the third generation customer. The first had no computer knowledge and therefore sought the expertise of those who had. The second had some, and therefore understood some of that nothing was either instant or simple. The third has simply bypassed the experience of the previous two and doesn’t understand why there might be any issues at all. That’s where present difficulties arise because

…and what the customer gives you! although the digital revolution has made the creation and exchange of information easier, the speed and ease disguises the fact that the process is still extremely complex, and hence problems are easy to overlook and even harder to explain. It’s hard to remember, let alone describe how slow everything was at the beginning of the digital age, and how you had to accept things took time, and mistakes happened. We used to send this magazine to the printers on an 88Mb Syquest disk then later by ISDN. To distill a PostScript file to generate 60Mb print compliant PDF took hours and still end up finding an error message with no clue as to what the error was. Start again from scratch. When you’ve aged through the three digital generations, it’s hard to have any sympathy with the impatience of today. Yes, we know you’ve just sent a file but we still need to check it before we waste time and paper printing it, rather than assume you know what you are doing. Even we can make mistakes! Then there is the basic issue that nothing is as simple as it seems to be transferring something from a phone to a full-sized hard copy print, from a pixel constrained screen to a dimensional hungry one. It can take so long batting back and forth with a customer to get an image of a size suitable to print because they can’t actually visualise it from their point of view. I got so fed up with a repeating exchange of unsuitable

files, I sent the customer an image of the file representing the size she wanted; a print superimposed with a small rectangle in the top right corner being the actual image she kept sending me. We got there in the end. Working on a desktop computer with a full-sized monitor in any photo or design program, it is relatively easy to view actual file dimensions, and if the former, the number of pixels comprising the image, their ratio one to the other. These figures are all there to guide you. On a mobile device it’s almost exactly the reverse as if it doesn’t want to confuse you with all this surplus information — just show you a nice picture. In addition, it may enhance that image with a complimentary filter, or an effect which will actually reduce the quality of the original for anything other than viewing on a small screen. Of course all of the major software suppliers now have phone-friendly versions of their editing program, but unless you are familiar with the working space and tools, it’s unlikely to be an easy option for the average mobile customer compared to more ‘user friendly’ and usually free alternatives. But of course, you get what you pay for or not as the case may be. Back in the early digital days, no one could have predicted with any certainty all the many developments it would produce and that gave those software gurus a dilemma in how to direct their products. Would they be vector based, using flexible mathematical formula, or pixel dependent images. Although Adobe’s first program was actually vector-based Illustrator, it was the

Quick Print Pro • Digital Imaging

flagship Photoshop which cemented its dominance in the market place as digital images exploded in popularity. Adding a layout capability in InDesign, and eventually a Creative Suite that could seamlessly put together all of the parts of the jigsaw effectively sealed the fate of competition like the once popular publishing option Quark XPress. CorelDraw developed as a contemporary company on America’s West Coast but was essentially a vector-based platform with an added on bitmap editor. As such it was popular for graphic designers, architects and the like, as it would also be able to handle CAD files. It never went away but was inevitably overshadowed by Adobe with Photoshop becoming a generic term for any editing tool, like Hoover is for vacuum cleaning. For 2019, CorelDraw is reborn with an expanded product line to be a very direct alternative to big A, while retaining most of its original working concepts, and certainly its familiar workspace. I say familiar, but although I used to be able to work in CorelDRAW back in the day, it takes some time to get used to the layout, controls and tools after a decade in Adobe territory. That’s because, unlike other software competitors they haven’t just done an Adobe clone, but retained the basic roots and trunk of the original and just extended leaves and branches to match current needs. It’s not a completely different workplace because you still need to arrange the various tools and options in a convenient way around the working image. Thirty years on, how we work and what we work with has changed dramatically as we have accepted. If one program were to try and tackle all the many varied tasks and file types it would become unwieldy with an impossibly cluttered workspace. Corel’s solution is to have the image editor as a separate application, quickly launched from the main platform. They have retained the original name Photo Paint which is perhaps unfortunate as it does far more than that and sounds too much like other inferior offerings. It has all the possibilities you would find in Photoshop, layers and masks, colour adjustment, sharpening and noise reduction to name a few. Then there is a further option for high dynamic range tuning of fine contrast between individual pixels. What it doesn’t have is the Content Aware capability to seamlessly clone areas of similar pixels which is a very powerful aid in Photoshop, but which is available in another Corel product, Paintshop Pro. It does have an Image Carver tool which is sort of similar but is going to take me a while to get my head round. One of the major features is the non-destructive editing of both bitmaps and vector files so that you can work on an image without doing any irreversible damage to the original. In fact, you can go back and forth through the actions and change any single one without having to follow the history sequence as you do in Photoshop. One of the more obvious differences an Adobe user would notice is that Corel uses a Docker column on the right hand side of the workspace to stack up its actions, layers, fonts etc.,

vivid-online.com

rather than floating them or minimising. Everything can be customised when you work out what you want nearest to hand, but it’s one of the workflow things that takes a little time to adjust to. There is also a very good range of tracing tool options in CorelDRAW itself to turn bitmaps into vector files. This is something that can be done in Illustrator, to transform pixel limited images into graphics that can be enlarged almost without limits, but Corel gives you a useful before and after display to guide you through the alternatives as well as a wider range of them. This makes it much easier to see and adjust the transformation of colour and detail that is the crucial factor in outputting a clear and accurate copy for enlargement. There is also a standalone font manager to organise most used fonts rather than trawl through all those available, and what is amusingly called a Font Playground for previewing text options. Even in Photo Paint mode text seems to behave better than it does in Photoshop where a lot of characters tend to behave quite sluggishly or are sometimes erratic. The mixing of vector and bitmap files is always a potential minefield in any design if you are going to preserve the integrity of any of the individual items. This is a task CorelDRAW seems particularly well suited to. Perhaps most important for the potential purchaser is that Corel gives you several options to pay and own, rather than a single subscription one. There’s a one-time payment for a perpetual licence as well as a pay as you go one, and several pick and mix ones in between designed to be as flexible as possible for customer needs. There’s so much to take in that, to be fair to CorelDRAW, I’ll continue to review points most relevant to print on demand in future columns as well as extending this feature on the QPP website. What emerges then is that CorelDRAW is certainly one of the best professional packages available as a design and editing program because of its comprehensive range of tools and functions. Because of its vector-based roots it is particularly good where pixel images, vector logos and additional text are to be mixed on flyers, posters, banners and the like, so in an increasingly web-based design world it still has a very strong application for outputting hard copy print.

THE PRINT SHOW

EPSON TO SHOWCASE NEW TECHNOLOGY Epson will demonstrate new technology in the UK for the first time, with the digital print giant saying the event offers “huge opportunities” for visitors to find out how they can grow their print business.

[E]

pson was one of the first brands to commit to The Print Show 2019, taking on its largest stand to date in order to showcase as many of its solutions as possible. It will be joined by the likes of HP, Xeretec (Xerox), RISO, Intec Printing Solutions, Xeikon, Premier Paper, Vivid Laminating Technologies and Renz. The manufacturer will invite visitors to find out how Epson kit can help them to access profitable work in new markets. Among the technology on the Epson stand this year will be the new bulk ink system for the SureSolor S series eco-solvent printer, which Epson says will deliver significant productivity gains and enhanced profitability for volume users. Also being showcased for the first time in the UK at the show this September will be the EcoTex synthetic leather print solution, utilising the SureColor S60600 printer. Visitors can also learn about the latest developments in the Epson dye sublimation offering and an expansion of its CAD printer range. Alongside this new kit, Epson will be demonstrating a number of its established solutions, including its full portfolio of SureColor large-format printer models, as it seeks to appeal to visitors from a wide range of backgrounds. Speaking about the event, Phil McMullin, sales manager for ProGraphics at Epson UK, says Epson and The Print Show will help visitors identify the solutions they need to grow their business in what is a highly competitive market. “In this challenging business climate of uncertainty and squeezed margins, we are aiming to show print service providers how, with relatively low investment, they can win more of the branding opportunities within their existing customer base,” McMullin said. “These new branding opportunities not only represent additional margin but help to protect existing business from competitors by offering a one stop shop service.” “The Print Show is a shop window on a huge number of new opportunities that PSPs will not

see just on the web or via a brochure.” McMullin says he has great confidence in The Print Show, primarily due to the success Epson has experienced at previous editions of the event. Epson has had a presence at the show since its launch in 2015; first through its reseller partner Colourbyte and more recently on its own stand. “From an Epson, perspective we know from past experience that our customers do not always grasp the full possibilities of our products until they have seen them in action,” McMullin says. “Trade shows such as The Print Show are a very important opportunity for stimulating ideas and without support from the industry

will struggle to survive. “So come along and ensure that the UK print industry has a healthy future!” The exhibitor list for The Print Show 2019 continues to grow, with organisers confirming a number of new additions to the floorplan in recent weeks. Among the latest companies to commit are Tharstern, Xeikon, The Solution Shop, James Burn International, Rhino Cutting Mats and Equipment, Siltech, Amaya and Route1Print. The Print Show 2019 will take place from September 17th to 19th at the NEC in Birmingham. Registration is free and now open at The Print Show’s website: www. theprintshow.co.uk

FESPA

HORIZON SIGNS DEAL FOR THIRD DURST SYSTEM Horizon used FESPA 2019 to complete the signing of a third Durst production system as part of a move to future-proof its fast-growing business in the final stages of a major investment program in Dublin, Ireland.

[D]

urst, manufacturer of advanced digital printing and production technologies, has agreed terms to supply a Durst Rho 1312 fully automated with a Smart4 speed advancement tool that improves speed and productivity by 40%. Horizon already has Durst P10 25O HS and Rho 1312 print production systems, which are also automated systems. Family owned Horizon is only weeks away from opening an extension to its head office on Navan Road, Dublin, where it has been located for the last 26 years. PROFIT PARTNERS

CENTURION TRIUMPHS WITH PAPERGRAPHICS Papergraphics has supported traditional quick print and signage company, Centurion Signs, on several recent interior projects using their world renown Digimura wallcovering products, to achieve fantastic results.

[F]

ollowing attending at one of Papergraphics’ ‘Doing More with Interiors’ days at their regional customer centre in Paisley, Centurion Signs, based in East Kilbride, has now completed several installs using Papergraphics’ Digimura 2.1 wallcovering, with more in the pipeline. The first of these was at Kilmarnock Football Club’s ground, Rugby Park, where an elegant photographic design, created specifically for the club to celebrate their history, was used to invoke a modern and totally bespoke décor finish in their prestigious Champions’ Lounge. Having worked with the historic “Killie” club for some time, Centurion originally installed a selfadhesive vinyl for this particular project. However, the approach changed following the Interiors event they attended at Papergraphics, as Gordon Duff, Managing Director at Centurion explains: “We’ve worked with Papergraphics for years and thought the opportunity to attend their Interiors day was one we couldn’t pass up. The day itself was great and I took away a lot of new information that I could use for my business. One of the things that really stood out was the legislation and standards relating to the installation of wallcoverings. For me, it cemented how important it was to use the right type of product for the application. We subsequently booked our installer team onto Papergraphics’ wallcovering application course in order to understand the regulations and installation technique in more detail. “After attending the Interiors event and the training, we took the decision to go back to Kilmarnock Football Club to take down the existing self-adhesive vinyl and change it for Papergraphics’ Digimura 2.1. We wanted to give the football club and ourselves the assurance that we had installed a solution that not only meets the correct regulations, but one that looked really fantastic, and would last.” Centurion has subsequently gone on to win several more interior décor projects, based on the specification of proper wallcoverings. The printer’s creative skill and ability is showcased most recently at the newly opened Ardnahoe Distillery on Islay, where a range of imagery and themed wall

graphics compliment the distillery’s exhibition tour displays, signage and décor. Centurion claim this is their favourite project of 2019 to date. Digimura 2.1 offers PSPs and installers a superior quality digital wallcovering that is ideal for high traffic public and commercial spaces that must adhere to strict guidelines, high specifications and outstanding durability, even when printed. These wallcoverings are ideal for busy public areas such as the football club‘s Hospitality lounge or the distillery’s Visitor Centre. They also contain an anti-fungal/anti-microbial biocide, adding to the list of robust credentials and are suitable even for healthcare environments. They also hold a “Euroclass EN13501” fire rating (essential for public spaces). Digimura 2.1 is compatible with eco-solvent, solvent, UV-curable and latex printers and is available in five different finishes, each adding a unique aesthetic to the printed image or design. “We’re delighted that Centurion found our event and training so informative and that it’s had such a positive impact on their business,” comments Barry Dellow, Application Training Specialist at Papergraphics. “The legislation for wallcoverings is so important but there is a lack of knowledge within our industry. We’re here to support our customers by providing training and advice to help them build their business in digital interiors. The end results for Centurion (and their clients) are exciting, creative spaces that have been brought to life by these beautiful wallcovering installations.” www.paper-graphics.com

Love for print – but environmental myths persist The results of a new survey commissioned by Two Sides reveal a telling insight into the public’s perceptions and attitudes towards print and paper. Carried out by independent research company Toluna, 6,000 consumers from across Europe were surveyed on their environmental concerns and preferences relating to paper.

Environment

It is clear from the survey that consumers are concerned for the environment, but there is a large gap between perceptions of key environmental areas and what is indeed fact. This is particularly evident when exploring consumer awareness and understanding of forestry and recycling. 60% of consumers believe European forest are shrinking, whereas the fact is that, over a 10 year period European forests have been growing by an equivalent of 1,500 football pitches every day. Only a fifth of those surveyed believe the paper recycling rate in Europe exceeds 60%, whereas the true figure is over 72%. 75% of European consumers believe it is important to use paper products from sustainably-managed forests. However, when coming to purchase paper products, just 34% of respondents pay attention to forestry

certification labels that products come from a sustainable source. This might be explained by a lack of awareness of two of the major certification schemes, the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC™). 34% of European consumers are aware of FSC; 27% are aware of PEFC The survey asked respondents to rank the environmental impact of several common materials and products. Consumers believe wood to have the least environmental impact, closely followed by glass and paper. Perhaps unsurprisingly, due to the significant amount of media coverage on the topic recently, plastic is considered by consumers to have the worst impact on the environment.

Preferences

A prominent trend the survey uncovered was, that when it came to reading books, magazines and newspapers, print came out on top. 69% believe that print is the most enjoyable way to read books; 61% prefer to read magazines in print; 54% believe that print is the most enjoyable way to read a newspaper Further to print being the preferred medium for reading, the push to “switch to digital” by financial organisations and service providers has proved unpopular with many consumers.

Overall 78% believe they have the right to choose how they receive their communications (electronically or printed) and a further 62% agree they should not be charged to receive paper statements. Two Sides Managing Director, Jonathan Tame concludes, “It is positive and not too surprising to see that print as a medium for reading and communications still comes out on top with a clear majority agreeing it to be the most enjoyable way to read.” “Overall, the report reveals an interesting insight into how print and paper is viewed by the public. It is positive to see both wood and paper are viewed as low environmental impact materials but the misconceptions around forestry and recycling rates have highlighted the necessity to raise awareness in these areas.” “The prevailing environmental myths about paper reaffirm the vital need for the Two Sides campaign to raise awareness and directly tackle these misconceptions.” www.twosides.info

Signs Express Bath are going green Signs Express Bath has become a member of The Planet Mark Sustainability scheme. This scheme is designed to help improve the sustainability of businesses in the Wiltshire, Somerset and South Gloucestershire area. It believes that every business can have positive impacts on society and the environment. When it comes to sustainability, we all have a part to play. Mark Collins, owner of Signs Express (Bath) attended a Planet Mark Start! Workshop and came away with a sustainability business plan to help them reduce the negative impact on the local and global environment. Signs Express (Bath) has agreed to work on the three main areas of change: 1) Recycling of non-commercial plastic and cardboard waste. 2) Find a new vinyl that has reduced plastic content. 3) Add a biodegradable product to our range. They are pleased to confirm that they have already put this plan into action.

Firstly, they now have a recycling unit for their rubbish, allowing them to separate their recyclable waste from general waste. This is then recycled on a weekly basis. Secondly, they have sourced a new vehicle wrap vinyl which is made using a non-PVC polymer material and a phthalate-free film. This has enabled them to offer an eco-friendly alternative to their customers, should they

choose to use this instead of traditional PVC vinyl for their vehicle graphics. Thirdly, they have sourced a new 100% biodegradable board. This Eco Board is a perfect alternative to soft foam boards, foam PVC and plastic composites. It is perfect for hoarding, short term promotional posters and advertising materials. It is fully recyclable and easily reused, in-fact it can be recycled up to eight times! This material is compostable and biodegradable which allows it to be disposed of in the normal paperboard waste stream. It is also FSC certified. ‘’We are excited to be adding more ecofriendly materials to our range. We can now give our customers more choice over the type of materials they wish to use and offer a more sustainable option. All these small changes can help make a real impact on our local community and environment ‘’ Mark Collins, Owner Signs Express (Bath) www.theplanetmarkstart.com www.signsexpress.co.uk/branch/bath

PRINT FUTURE

2020 PRINT VISION

2020 PRINT VISION

Quick print pros are habitual print pioneers. As the nation’s print service providers we are regularly asked for our professional opinion on what kit to recommend to our eight million plus end user customers. Please share your thoughts, experiences and predictions with: forecasts@2020PrintVision.co.uk New Océ LabelStream 4000 Series

Canon has announced new print modes and performance upgrades for its highly versatile Océ LabelStream 4000 series. Print resolutions of up to 1080 dpi and print speeds of up to 75 m/min allow label converters to expand their application range while increasing throughput and minimising turnaround times. The new top speed in combination with a 16” digital print width result in an industry leading productivity of up to 1845 m² per hour. The Océ LabelStream 4000 series, an industrial scale four or five colour UV inkjet press (CMYK and white) targeted at the production of self-adhesive labels, now offers two upgraded print modes: Quality, and Performance. Label converters can choose the right combination of quality and efficiency for the profitable production of short to medium runs. The press is available as a digital only reel-to-reel configuration and can expand to a full hybrid configuration with a custom mix of additional flexo, embellishment and finishing units, turning it into a fully integrated single pass label conversion line to meet various demands and budgets. Crit Driessen, VP and Head of Digital Packaging, comments: “Since the launch of the Océ LabelStream 4000 series in 2018, we have been actively driving the quality and performance of the technology to boost productivity and to support customers in addressing a broader range of self-adhesive labels. The latest improvements follow Canon’s philosophy to provide efficient inkjet production solutions for highest net output in all markets served.”

Improved print modes for quality and productivity choices

The newly introduced Quality mode offers a resolution of 720 x 1080 dpi at a print speed of 50 m/min, enabling excellent reproduction of fine details, smooth tones, vibrant colours and solid areas for a wide range of label designs and substrates. A single pass opacity white of >73% matches conventional flexo technologies. For label converters seeking the

white opacity of conventional rotary screen printing, a one pass digital white opacity of up to 80% can be achieved at a slightly reduced speed providing a cost-efficient alternative to lengthy set-up processes and expensive screens. Together with the highly pigmented Océ LabelStream inks and the high ink laydown capabilities of the advanced Xaar 2001 printhead technology, the new print mode can reproduce a Pantone colour gamut of 94% with CMYK. With the improved Performance mode, which attains a top print speed of 75 m/min at a resolution of 720 x 720 dpi, label converters can achieve maximum throughput and production efficiency supported by a white opacity of >65%. In combination with the 16-inch print width, the Océ LabelStream 4000 series delivers industry leading productivity of up to 1,845 m²/ hour – and its high level of integration and automation, short make-ready times and excellent reliability ensure this speed is leveraged when combined with analogue components to form a fully integrated conversion line. The choice of white opacities at different print speeds enables users to balance application costs and quality for the most profitable production. The Océ LabelStream 4000 series will be on show at LabelExpo Europe in Brussels, Belgium, from September 24 – 27, 2019. ww.oce.com

BOBST and Mouvent at Labelexpo 2019 BOBST, along with its digital printing competence centre Mouvent, are set to reveal a portfolio of world leading innovations at the world’s largest label event, Labelexpo Europe. Visitors at the event, which takes place 24 to 27 September 2019 in Brussels, will be able to see four complete digitalised production processes across a digital native press, equipped with water based inks, a new world premiere UV/Flexo hybrid printing machine and a DigiFlexo press. “We have recently revealed several truly ground-breaking innovations that will set new standards helping converters and brand owners improve time to market, guarantee colour consistency and food packaging safety,” said Federico D’Annunzio, BOBST Programme Manager Hybrid Printing. “It’s really exciting to bring these latest innovations together in one place, so attendees will be able to see for themselves the difference these innovations make, and the impact they could have on their own businesses.”

Latest innovations pave way for world premiere

The latest innovations include Ink-on-Demand (IoD), Highly Automated Liquid (HAL) and DigiColor — game-changing solutions that will set a new course for the industry’s future. The IoD inking system replaces conventional inking reservoirs with a single rubber pipe that dispenses 30 grams of ink to the print unit. The system eliminates ink trays and chambered doctor blades and performs fully automated washing of the print unit in less than one minute. To complement the IoD system, HAL is an off-line ink mixing station for producing Pantone colours from 14 basic inks, and contains only one pump performing a pipette-style action to measure out the very small amounts of colour needed. DigiColor is the first ever inline “closed loop” colour system that enables digital colour adjustment to the target Delta E values during printing, at any speed, on any substrate, with any operator. It is a major step towards full colour digitisation. These innovations have paved the way for a new hybrid Flexo with “Mouvent™ Digital Technology Inside”, which is the best combination

of digital and DigiFlexo printing, and will be unveiled for the first time at Labelexpo. The hybrid is associated with total flexibility in high added value labels, with extremely short job setup and fast return on investment. It will be the most digitally automated press in the labels market, with the highest print quality and productivity. It opens a new era in the production of self-adhesive labels with totally new standards of productivity and profitability. Other machines on display include: • M5 IoD/DigiColor, which transforms flexo printing into a fully digitised process. Color matching is simplified both in the REVO ECG and in spot colours environment. Changing inks in any press configuration takes a matter of seconds with no ink contact with the hands of the operator. Closed loop colour control delivers perfect colour matching on any substrate worldwide. • LB702-WB digital label printer from Mouvent, a remarkable advance in digital label production, using only 100% water-based Mouvent™ Inks, making it 100% free of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and 100% food safe. The machine can run with up to 100 m/min on a broad range of substrates, from self-adhesive to wet-glue labelstock especially targeting applications where migration could be an issue, such as in the food industry. The LB702-WB’s high print quality of 1,200 dpi leads to exceptional results on complex substrates such as textured natural wine label papers and many others. Being configured with six colours, the Mouvent water-based press allows for excellent ECG printing and Pantone matching. Paired with the in-house developed Mouvent™ DFE, customers benefit from easy file preparation, perfect colour consistency and variable data printing for real-time customisation. It all results in a combination of both technical and aesthetic excellence that attendees will be able to see in real time at the event. • M1X inline UV flexo press, which delivers high performance at a competitive cost. It is a partially fixed configuration machine, 370mm in web-width, developed with automation and connectivity in mind that can print and convert a wide variety of applications in one pass. Meanwhile, the BOBST M6 press will be the star of the Flexible Packaging Arena in Hall 11. M6 press is a combination of in-line UV Flexo, REVO Digital Flexo and the new revolutionary V-Flower print unit, allowing for job changeovers in one minute, “on-the-fly” without stopping the press, and with up to 95% press up-time. It is the most productive press to economically produce short to mid-size runs. The M6 will feature the DigiMount™ fully automated flexo plate mounting system, which features advanced electronics for improved speed and accuracy of plate mounting. www.bobst.com

UV printing is one of the most flexible and exciting print processes ever created and its uses are almost limitless. It has become an essential tool for sign makers, graphics producers, promotional gift businesses, packaging specialists, advertising agencies, designers, retailers and new start-ups. The guide, which is free to download from the Roland website, focuses on Roland’s VersaUV LEF range of benchtop UV printers, and explores how they can be used to print directly onto a wide array of materials and objects. Thanks to the combination of innovative inks, low heat cur ing and variable data processing, it’s possible to add customised print directly to all kinds of items

Earn money with inkjet or ‘the thicker, the cheaper’ Great margins thanks to large print runs — undoubtedly, many printing houses look back with nostalgia at the days when the number of units decided how profitable an order was. You set the machine up once and off you went. But the tables have turned: Print runs are shrinking in size, the number of jobs is increasing and delivery deadlines are getting shorter and shorter. Therefore, many companies are having to consider the most uncomplicated and automated way to channel a growing number of printing orders through their business. A company from Swabia is already mastering this perfectly: Elanders Germany. As part of the Swedish Elanders Group, the company in Waiblingen is unifying all parts of the Print & Packaging sector. Digital printing has been around in Waiblingen for decades. From monochrome digital printing and premium Indigo digital printing to premium high speed inkjet printing: The plant is not only equipped with eight HP Indigo digital presses and three HP Inkjet web systems, but also all types of finishing technology and bookbinding processes. The main focus at the Waiblingen site is the production of adhesive bound books with soft covers. It is not unusual for them to process over 1,000 orders per day. And this number continues to grow. The lion’s share of these are produced on inkjet web presses — the premium class of digital printing. According to Peter Sommer, President of Print & Packaging at Elanders, success is based on two factors: First of all, an effective sales approach has to precisely understand each customer’s individual problems and convert these into solutions using the company’s capabilities. “It’s not just about printing a catalogue anymore. A lot of people can do that. It’s about the entire process chain including logistics. In actual fact, we deliver operating manuals for cars directly to the production line. And, what’s more, we deliver them when they are needed.“ However, today, alongside sales, the processes implemented before and after printing also have a particularly decisive influence on the profitability of a company. This is where money is earned or lost. More than ever, automation and standardisation are deciding how efficient

the entire production process is, irrespective of whether the printing jobs are coming from open online shops, closed B2B portals or sales representatives. “These (HP) web presses devour paper”, Peter Sommer jokes. “We feed them with orders that have a high level of uniformity. If you get tangled up with the size and printing substrate, you’ve already lost.” Inkjet closes the gap in profitability — Elanders started using the web inkjet in 2015. Alongside quality, the efficiency of the system was a deciding factor in terms of investment. For Peter Sommer, inkjet systems are the ideal way to close the gap in profitability between HP Indigos and offset printing. Small print runs with maximum quality standards are processed with Indigos. Large print runs with offset printing are often only cost effective from 10,000 units onwards. However, the majority of orders are part of a middle ground. “Using inkjet, we can cover everything that is too small for offset printing and too expensive for the Indigo” Peter Sommer confirms. www.elanders.com

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? What, no kids

At their high school reunion, Sarah and Esther meet up for the first time in fifty years. Sarah begins to tell Esther about her children: “My son is a doctor and he’s got four kids. My daughter is married to a lawyer and they have three great kids. So tell me Esther, how about your kids?” Esther replies, “Unfortunately, Marty and I don’t have any children and so we have no grandchildren either.” Sarah says, “No children and no grandchildren... so tell me, Esther, what do you do for aggravation?”

Excused absence

Little Johnny did not go to school one day. The next day when the teacher asked him why, he said, “Our cow was on heat, so I had to take her to the bull.” “Oh I see,” said the teacher, “but I’m sure your father could have done that.” “No ma’am, he couldn’t have,” said Johnny, “it has to be the bull”

Summer shorts

Patient: Nurse, I keep seeing spots in front of my eyes. Nurse: Have you seen a doctor? Patient: No, just spots. I’m great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at once. A limbo champion walked into a bar. He was disqualified. What starts with an “O” and ends with “nions” and sometimes make you cry? Opinions.

Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto

After sitting down, Jupiter says, “I’m the biggest planet, give me the biggest beer you have.” Saturn says, “I’m the best looking planet, give me the fanciest drink you have.” Pluto says, “I know I’m not a planet, but give me a shot!

How many telemarketers How many telemarketers does it take to change a light bulb? Only one, but they have to do it while you’re eating dinner.

Ice Cream

What flavours of ice cream do you have?” inquired the customer. “Vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate,” answered the new waitress in a hoarse whisper. Trying to be sympathetic, the customer asked, “Do you have laryngitis?” “No....” replied the new waitress with some effort, “just...erm.... vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate.”

A blonde teenager

Wishing to earn some extra summer holiday money she decided to hire herself out as a handywoman and began canvassing a nearby wealthy neighbourhood. She went to the front door of the first house and asked the owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do. “Well, you could paint my porch. How much will you charge me?” Delighted the girl responded immediately. “How about £50?” The man agreed and told her that the paint and brushes were in the garage. The man’s wife, overhearing the conversation said to her husband, “But Jim, the porch is huge and goes halfway round the house.” “Well, she gave me a price, so let her get on with it.” Later, the girl came to the front door to collect her money. “You’re finished already?” the surprised man asked. “Yes” she replied, “and I had some paint left over so I gave it two coats.” Impressed the man gave her the £50 and a £10 tip. “By the way” said the girl. “It’s not a Porsche, it’s a Lexus.”

Hit and run

A man was crossing the road when he was hit by a car, which then sped off. A police officer asked the injured man, ”Did you get a look at the driver?” ”No,” he said, “but I can tell you it was my ex-wife.” “How do you know that?” asked the officer. “I’d recognise her laugh anywhere!”

Milkman

A woman buys many gallons of milk from the milkman one day. “Why do you need so much milk?” the mailman asks. The lady replies, “I heard that taking baths in milk makes you healthier and prettier.” The milkman asks, “Would you like the milk pasteurised?” She answers, “No, just up to the neck.”

How many wives?

When Was She Born?

My daughter was working for the American Embassy in Australia when she was expecting her first child. I was so happy when she texted me with the news. “I’m a grandfather!” I said to my co-workers. “When was she born?” somebody queried. Recalling the date she told me, I thought for a minute and said in a calm voice, “Tomorrow!”

Two little boys were at a wedding when one leaned over to the other and asked, “How many wives can a man have?” His friend answered, “Sixteen... four better, four worse, four richer, and four poorer.”

Online Course

A very good bird impression

When I arrived here

A man is applying for a job in a circus. The interviewer asks: “So what can you do?” “I can do a really good bird impression” replied the man “Oh we already have people who do that here, we won’t be needing you for that” “Oh well,” the man said sadly and flew away.

Snake in a bar

A snake slithered into a bar and asked the bartender for a drink. “I’m sorry,” said the bartender, “but I can’t serve you.” “Why not?” asked the snake. “Because you can’t hold your drink.”

Mensa IQ 150+

A group at a MENSA (IQ 150+) meeting were having lunch at a local restaurant when one noticed that the salt shaker was filled with pepper and the pepper shaker was filled with salt. After a lengthy discussion they determined that they could swap the contents to match the correct shakers. All they needed was a straw and an empty saucer. They called over their waitress (IQ much less than 150) and pointed out their concerns. Without hesitation she switched the lids, said “problem solved”, and walked away from the now shocked and silenced Mensa table.

A police officer said to a motorist, “What were you doing? Your car was zigzagging like crazy!” “I’m learning to drive.” “Without an instructor in the car?” “Oh, yes. It’s an online course.” Mr. Bond, a tourist from Basildon, arrived in Barbados. In an airport taxi cab, Peterson asked the driver, “Say, is this really a healthful place?” “It sure is,” the cabby replied. “When I arrived here I couldn’t say one word. I had hardly any hair on my head. I didn’t have the strength to walk across a room, and I had to be lifted out of bed.” “That’s wonderful!” said the tourist, “How long have you been here?” “I was born here.”

The Birds and the Bees

One day, little Johnny came up to his father and asked, “Dad, where did I come from?” Dad squirmed a bit, but thought it was time his son knew the facts of life. He told him the expression of love resulted in the beginning of life. How life developed and finally, how a child was born. As the story unfolded, Johnny’s eyes got wider and wider. When his father was finished, Johnny said, “Wow, that is really neat. That sure beats what Billy told me. He said that he came from Croydon.”

Coining it in

A piece of gold walked into a Texas bar. The bartender said, “Au, get out of here!”

Pallet jokes

I was trying to develop a joke about PALLETS. But I am not able to find one that stacks up.

Is that all you can you say?

The boss called one of his employees into the office. “Rob,” he said, “you’ve been with the company for a year. You started off in the finishing room, one week later you were promoted to printing, and one month after that you were promoted to pre-press and design then onto the sales department. Just four short months later, you were promoted to sales manager. Now it’s time for me to retire, and I want you to take over the company. What do you say to that?” “Thanks,” said the employee. “Thanks?” the boss replied. “Is that all you can say?” “I suppose not,” the employee said. “Thanks, Dad.”

Girls are smarter

“Daddy, did you know that girls are smarter than boys?” “No, I didn’t know that.” “There you go.”

Advice from mother

A daughter asks her mother, “What are character qualities that I should look for in a marriage partner? You know, for someone that I will be spending eternity with.” The mother replied, ”Go ask your father, he did better than I did.”

The husband who knows

While attending a marriage seminar dealing with communication, Tom and his wife Grace listened to the instructor, “It is essential that husbands and wives know the

A chicken pie in Jamaica costs £1.50.

things that are important to each other.” He addressed the men, “Can you describe your wife’s favourite flower?” Tom, smiling but looking a little nervous, leaned over, touched his wife’s arm gently and whispered, “It’s self-rising flour, right?”

He lived so long

A boy was sitting on a bus and eating one piece of chocolate after the other. A man sat down next to him and said, “Eating so much chocolate isn’t good for you boy.” The boy answered, “My grandfather died when he was 112 years old.” The man asked, “Do you think he lived so long because he was eating lots of chocolate?” The boy answered, “He lived so long because he minded his own business.”

How we got here

My pregnant daughter and her husband were checking out a new birth facility that was more like a spa. The birthing room had a hot tub, soft music, and candlelight. “What do you think?” she said He looked around. “Isn’t this how we got here in the first place?”

Late appointment

Doctor: “I see you’re over a month late for your appointment. Don’t you know that nervous disorders require prompt and regular attention? What’s your excuse?” Patient: “I was just following your orders, Doc.” Doctor: “Following my orders? What are you talking about? I gave you no such order.”

A chicken pie in Trinidad costs £1.75.

Patient: “You told me to avoid people who irritate me.”

Too much information

“Hello! Is this Gordon’s Pizza?” “No sir, it’s Google’s Pizza.” “Did I dial the wrong number? “No sir, Google bought the pizza store.” “Oh, alright then. I’d like to place an order please.” “Okay sir, do you want the usual?” “The usual? You know what my usual is?” “According to the caller ID, the last 15 times you’ve ordered a 12-slice with double-cheese, sausage, and thick crust.” “Okay, that’s what I want this time too.” “May I suggest that this time you order an eight-slice with ricotta, arugula, and tomato instead?” “No, I hate vegetables.” “But your cholesterol is not good.” “How do you know?” “Through the subscribers guide. We have the results of your blood tests for the last seven years.” “You know what, I’m sick of Google, Facebook, Twitter, and everyone else having all my information! I’m going to an island without internet, where there’s no cellphone line, and no one to spy on me!” “I understand sir. But you may want to renew your passport... it expired five weeks ago.”

Only in America

Shirley and Abe, a retired couple from New York City, living in Miami Beach, are getting ready to go out to dinner. Shirley says, “Abe, darling, do you want me to wear this Chanel suit or the Gucci?”

A chicken pie in St Kitts costs £2.50.

39

Abe says, “I don’t care.” A few minutes later Shirley says, “Abe, should I wear my Cartier watch or my Rolex?” Abe says, “Your choice.” A few more minutes pass and Shirley says, “Abe, love, shall I wear my five-carat pearl diamond ring or my six-carat round diamond ring with the baguettes?” Abe says, “Shirley, I really don’t care what you wear, but if you don’t get moving, we’re going to miss the Early Bird Special.”

The drummer’s daughters Did you hear about the drummer who gave his daughters the same names? Anna 1, Anna 2, Anna 3, Anna 4.

Coming Home From School Little Johnny came home from school with a sofa slung across his back and armchairs under his arms. His father said, ”Little Johnny, I told you not to accept suites from strangers.”

Cowards In History

A man went into a bookstore and complained... “I bought this book from you yesterday, ‘Cowards in History’ and all the pages fell out!” The sales assistant said, “That’s because it has no spine.”

Talkinginto an envelope

I was mailing a letter at my local post office when I noticed my not so bright neighbour talking into an envelope. I ask her what she was doing? She replied, without missing a beat, “Sending voicemail.”

These are the pie rates of the Caribbean!
