The Printroom brings Foilant Lamination in-house Liverpool commercial printer The Printroom has brought lamination in-house with investment in the next generation B2 Foliant Taurus 530 NG and Foliant Multi-functional Inprinting Unit. Established in 2003, by a team who previously worked together in the print department of a major financial organisation based in Crosby, The Printroom runs a B2 manroland 500 alcohol-free press and holds EMAS certification. It is also ISO14001 and FSC certified. It produces digital print on a Canon Imagepress 7011. The laminator joins a Horizon StitchLiner 6000 installed in 2013 and a Perfecta 115 guillotine installed in 2009. Managing director David Mann, says: “We produce a lot of high quality booklets and brochures for universities, colleges and schools plus promotional print for marketing agencies. “We were sending out our lamination work to a very good local trade finisher but volumes were growing for fast turnaround short run work. We were getting a bottleneck so decided to bring the process in-house. “We did look at another system but the Foliant was most suited to the volumes we were going to be running. Now we can be much faster in turning our lamination work around. We have also been adding it to some jobs as an extra to test it out and this has resulted in customers coming back and asking for it again. “We liked its foiling capability too. This is something we are going to be offering more and more.” The Foliant Multi-functional Inprinting Unit makes foiling and spot varnish fast and affordable for short run and personalised print. It runs a wide range of colours including gold, silver, red and green and a clear

gloss for spot varnish. It suits a broad range of end uses from corporate stationery to POS and book covers. Mann says: “We have already completed some small orders that would have been too expensive if a die was required.” As for return on investment Mann adds: “We expect it will pay for itself in two years but the investment was less about achieving ROI and more about providing a responsive service for our clients.” www.ifsl.uk.com

Epson partners with Central Saint Martins A Pro scanner housed in the retouching and scanning room is accessible to hundreds of students at CSM As a result of its close two-way working collaboration, an Epson Pro scanner has been installed at world renowned Central Saint Martins, UAL, with its 5,000 students. This new scanner will be accessible daily to students in a range of courses including fashion, graphics and photography. Housed in the retouching and scanning room of the photography department it will be used for scanning prints and negatives. “The scanner is a great tool for our workflow from analogue to digital,” says James Barnett, technician in the photography department. “We will use the scanner to convert hand prints from the darkroom to digital files. The transparency adapter enables us to scan large batches of film, including the ability to scan large format negatives such as 5x4 inch and 10x8 inch. This will greatly increase the efficiency and speed up the workflow in this area.” Central Saint Martins (CSM) was already using the Epson V700 and V800 A4 scanners but the new larger professional level scanner will extend the work that can be handled and improve the productivity and turnaround times. The university’s technology line-up today in the textiles department includes the latest dye sublimation printer (SureColor SC-F9300), a direct to garment (DTG) printer (SureColor SC-F2100) and an A3 scanner (Expression 12000XL). CSM was an Epson equipment user even before the partnership was created last year because it recognises the quality, versatility and creativity benefits. The partnership includes educational projects, facilities access and information and promotional exchanges to the mutual

benefit of both parties. Phil McMullina, sales manager for Epson UK, says: “Epson is proactive in its links with education. It is not just about placing kit in colleges but about working with the colleges to extend the knowledge of the students and to enable them to learn new skills and push the boundaries of design and creativity to their limits using our products. It is a mutually advantageous scheme.” www.epson.co.uk • www.arts.ac.uk/csm

Sharp helps build Ghanaian school The on-going support of Sharp Business Systems UK (SBSUK) has helped Newill Academy, a primary school in Koforidua, Ghana, to reach the next crucial phase of its construction. Recent milestones for the project include adding cover for the building’s first-floor classrooms, as well as laying the foundations for new teaching spaces. Previously a Ghanaian teacher, the project is spearheaded by SBSUK’s Customer Support Engineer of 18 years William Newman. Commenting on the school’s progress, William said: “The first-floor classrooms have now been covered and the foundations have been laid for additional classrooms at the rear of the building. I honestly cannot thank my colleagues at Sharp enough for their continued hard work and generosity. Their on-going fundraising efforts mean we can now finance the slab reinforcement of the second floor which is fantastic.” To help the next phase, a team of five from SBSUK took part in the gruelling 12km Leeds Total Warrior race through water, fire, and mud, raising over £2,150 towards the expansion. Part of a larger project to support the school to completion, SBSUK staff also held a Newill Academy fundraising day which included collections of stationery, clothing, and toys for the school’s children. Ranging from books,

IT equipment, and school furniture, SBSUK customers have also flocked to support the construction, which should prove to be a pivotal development in Koforidua. Discussing why he started the project, William explained: “I decided to set up the academy after a holiday in Ghana, where I saw children sitting with their parents who were trading on the roadside. No government school existed in the area and these families were priced out of attending private school, so I wanted to help.” William founded Newill Academy in 2010 to provide education and support for local children

imageData adds a Stahlfolder to enhance folding This spring imageData Group will install a Stahlfolder KH78 at its Willerby site in East Yorkshire. It replaces an old MBO folder and will significantly improve flexibility and speed of make ready. This progressive and innovative company, often used as a beta test site by suppliers, looked at options from MBO and Heidelberg before making its decision. “We have always been impressed with Stahl’s build quality and reliability, and cannot highlight one specific feature that swayed our decision; it was the overall package that convinced us and it was also the model our operators preferred,” says Pete Shaw, production director. imageData chose a combination rather than a buckle folder primarily due to the reduced footprint. The company has an existing Stahlfolder at its Willerby site and the two Heidelberg folders will now complement each other allowing 99% of all folding configurations to be processed in house. Speed of turnaround is critical for this company which uses dry sheet technology and needs finishing to keep up. imageData Group is a one stop shop for print, data and visual communications. It has been trading for over 35 years and continually reinvests in the latest equipment to provide all customers with constant access to cost-effective and well managed print solutions. www.heidelberg.co.uk

from disadvantaged backgrounds. Sarah Coates, Head of HR at SBSUK, added: “Enriching young lives is a central part of Sharp’s CSR strategy, and this primary school project has been a major part of our very own William Newman’s life since 2010, so we are thrilled to be supporting the project into its next phase. We can often forget about those who are further afield, but it’s important to give support where we can.” See how you can get involved with the project here: www.newillacademy.org www.sharp.co.uk

Print trailblazer development The Print Trailblazer Consortium has submitted the assessment plan for the print trailblazer to the Institute for Apprenticeships (IfA), part of the Department for Education. This is the final stage in securing approval from Government to start the delivery of the new programmes. This has been a long and sometimes challenging battle to get to this point. The journey started in March 2015 when a consortium of employers led by James Buffoni of Ryedale Group Ltd secured the trailblazer (a new employer-defined standard for apprenticeship programmes) for the industry. The standards are employer owned, relate to specific occupations, and feature a graded end point assessment. The trailblazer secured is to develop a Level 3 standard that covers pre-press, press and post-press (finishing). The government awarded the trailblazer as a core with options, with print as the core and the options as pre-press, press and post press (finishing). Through many focused meetings, the consortium produced a standard which was approved by the Government Trailblazer Panel but it was approved subject to certain conditions being met. The condition applied by the panel was that the options were combined, so that there would be a single standard and an apprentice would need to master all three areas i.e. pre-press, press and post-press before they would be able to pass their apprenticeship. Thanks to support from across the industry they were successful in overturning the Government’s decision and approval for the full core with options standard was achieved in March 2018. The consortium has worked hard over the last year to define the assessment plan, which will support the standard. This has now been given the stamp of approval from the relationship manager at the IfA, and feedback from Ofqual (External Quality Assurance Company) is that this

is a good assessment plan, which is now being considered for approval. This has been a challenging process and has required considerable input from the consortium but especially from Chair James Buffoni and Vice Chair Ian Wilton. We appreciate the support of the consortium and would like to thank the companies involved, BCQ Group, BPIF, CDi, CDS, De La Rue, GQA, Learn2Print, Leeds City College, PageBros, Reach Plc, Ryedale Group, The Printing Charity, Unite the Union and Westrock — MPS. The BPIF would like to thank all of the consortium for their support and help, and expect to hear from Government at the beginning of April. www.britishprint.com

Manchester Printers choose Versafire EP press Rapidly expanding Manchester Printers will take delivery of a Heidelberg Versafire EP completing a series of investments that will give the company 25-30% greater capacity and add about £400,000 to the group’s £2.3m turnover. In December Manchester Printers acquired Berkeley Business Forms, a print management company that has operated from its Deeside, North Wales, base for 30 years. The owner died at the end of 2017 resulting in the sale of the business a year later. This will increase the business handled by Manchester Printers, based in Trafford Park, which at the end of last year added a guillotine and booklet maker and which, in addition to the Versafire EP, has placed an order for a second-hand Printmaster 52 two-colour litho press (with NCR work in mind). “We are well established in digital print,” says group managing director Gavin Page. “We have to date been a Konica Minolta house but as we look to the next stage of development (a three-year plan) we needed the Heidelberg Versafire EP. We did test equipment from both companies but the Versafire means we can handle a heavier weight of paper (up to 470gsm) and print on textured stock with superb print quality (which is vital for greetings cards work), The speed and reliability also really impressed us and the banner sheet extension means we can handle A4 landscape brochures.” The Versafire has been supplied with Heidelberg’s Digital Front End which features an uncoated simulation for better print quality on uncoated work. Manchester Printers handles a wide range of commercial work but with an emphasis on brochures and flyers. Its clients include the BBC, ITV,

Hamleys and Bentley. It has an interactive web site where customers can tap into standard formats for economical print solutions or use the expertise of “Gavin, Doctor of Print”. Gavin Page has also worked for Canon, his first job in print following a chance meeting at a service station on the M1 28yrs ago!. Outside work he takes part in indoor and outdoor show jumping events, with his partner Sarah and daughter Mia. www.heidelberg.co.uk

IIJ Showcases Solutions to Konica Minolta Industrial Inkjet Ltd recently hosted an event at Clare College Cambridge for Konica Minolta senior executives from across central and eastern Europe. The event was arranged to showcase the products and capabilities of IIJ and present how the extensive professional sales team from Konica Minolta Business Solutions could add opportunities to their businesses. The event was initiated by Roman Tihelka, the Managing Director of Konica Minolta Business Solutions Cluster East. Bringing together directors and senior sales staff from across his region, in Cambridge, the heartland of industrial inkjet technology. Presentations from senior IIJ staff outlined their extensive product portfolio, key partnerships and capabilities, along with information on their target markets of packaging, security, wallpaper and labels, detailing IIJ’s unique selling points and success stories in these industries. This was delivered to give the delegates the confidence to look at applications outside of their normal sales targets with new vision and the knowledge that with IIJ they can gain new business. During the event, the delegates had the opportunity to visit IIJ’s factory and demonstration facility where they were shown live demonstrations. These included the MonoPrint 520HiQ product, printing 600dpi variable data at 200m/min, a ColourPrint

223HiQ engine, running 600 x 1200dpi full colour UV labels at 100m/min, and printing high security polycarbonate ID cards, including covert inks, at 150 cards per minute on IIJ’s XYPrint 300 system. The high speed printing of the demonstrated equipment really impressed the audience. This was possible due the exceptional speed and quality of the Konica Minolta printheads together with the robust development process and innovative system design from IIJ. These systems use the KM1800i printhead, increasingly the printhead of choice not only for IIJ’s product but also for KM’s OEM customer base. IIJ’s Director of Business Development, Paddy O’Hara said “This event shows how we are working ever more closely with Konica Minolta. As the official partner for Konica Minolta print heads outside of Asia, IIJ has worked alongside KM for over 13 years, but this activity closes the circle as we give the equipment sales division of KM the ability to sell into growing markets

using our KM-enabled print solutions.” Konica Minolta Cluster East Head of Sales, Pavel Ucen said: “It was a very impressive, inspiring and well organised event in Cambridge. It was the first such an event for all Cluster East Managing Directors. All participants received very well structured information about the technology itself, business model, successful business cases and a lot of insight during the tour of the IIJ premises. Cluster East sees huge potential in closer cooperation. We are running IIJ systems in four facilities, have hired a Cluster East Business Development Manager, and are going to open an Ink Jet Competence centre in the Czech Republic. We are confident, there will be valuable outcome, and are looking forward into their much closer cooperation!” For further details please contact Sarah Collard on 01954 232023 or sarahcollard@industrialij.com www.industrialij.com

The Trivor 2400’s High Fusion inks have been formulated to deliver outstanding visual resolution on a full range of matt, silk and gloss offset coated and uncoated stocks. The Xerox Trivor 2400 with High Fusion Inks will enable DG3 to offer clients digital colour on a broader range of paper types

and weights, together with a lower cost of print. The Xerox Trivor 2400’s new controller technology aids ease of use and device management and its advanced colour management delivers brilliant colour with offset like quality. production department more firepower, while the ink-jet technology ensures a lower cost base which will help to accelerate our growth.” Steve Andrew, Group Production Director at Xeretec, added: “We’re simply delighted with the sale and that the installation has gone so well. To engage with a progressive, dynamic and successful company like DG3 and deliver the solution they required, has been a resounding success for all involved. We are confident that the Trivor HF2400 will play a key role in delivering not just for DG3 but for its future clients as well.” www.xeretec.co.uk

Mimaki launch new Metallic UV Ink Mimaki Europe has announced that it has released a UV-curable metallic ink, named MUH-100-Si. The new ink strengthens Mimaki’s product offering and pushes the boundaries of graphic expression beyond that of ordinary UV flatbed inkjet printers. The ink is compatible with Mimaki’s UJF-7151plus printer, which produces high-quality print for an impressive range of applications, from gifts and novelty items to wide-format boards. The new MUH-100-Si UV-curable metallic ink will bring a strong competitive edge to Mimaki customers, allowing them to provide added value to the brands who use their services. Supporting Mimaki’s ideology of “new technology for creating the next generation of digital printing”, the new ink demonstrates how digital print enables creative ideas to be realised highly efficiently in the product manufacturing process. Whilst metallic effects on printed products typically require further processing and manual handling after printing, Mimaki will demonstrate the new ink at the C!Print exhibition in France in February and visitors will see how the new technology can be used to produce impactful prints. Bert Benckhuysen, Senior Product Manager, Mimaki Europe comments: “We are very excited to launch this metallic ink and have the opportunity to display it at C!Print in Lyon. At Mimaki we dedicate ourselves to providing

customers with products that will allow them to stand out within their markets. Not only will the new metallic ink ensure this, but it will also provide a much more efficient way for our customers to manufacture more luxurious and sophisticated products.” Created by mixing a bright pigment into the ink, MUH-100-Si can place metallic ink directly onto the product without the need for a separate manual transfer process, as is the case when

applying glitters or foils to produce a metallic effect. Decorative options such as printing both gloss and matte tones, texture expression with embossing effect, and full-colour metallic expressions can be achieved in-house by printing coloured ink overlaid on metallic ink. Available for use with the UJF-7151plus printer, the metallic ink can be used for a wide range of applications, including items such as paper containers, films and novelty items. Mimaki is exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services and the company’s Chief Operations Manager, Brett Newman comments, “With the UJF-7151plus already widely used for creating high end print applications, the addition of the metallic ink opens up considerable revenue-enhancing possibilities in the luxury and bespoke sectors.” Benckhuysen concludes, “Broadening our range of inks really helps our customers to optimise the use of their Mimaki printers and differentiate themselves from competitors. Delivering new creative possibilities whilst maintaining the same high quality and reliability that we pride ourselves on, helps our customers’ businesses to thrive and helps the brands they work with to stand out from the crowd.” Mimaki’s new MUH-100-Si UV-curable metallic ink will be demonstrated at C!Print 2019 (5-7 February 2019, Lyon, France). www.hybridservices.co.uk

Enviroflutes — the Worlds’ most environmental padded bag Peak Envelopes has recently added an exciting new addition to their range. Based out of Watford, they are pleased to now offer an innovative new solution at a time of growing societal concern of over use of plastics. With the industry gradually turning away from anything poly that is non-recyclable, non-biodegradable or simply environmentally unfriendly, Peak Envelopes were keen to fill this void and provide a solution that would benefit both their customers and your customers — and the environment! The Enviroflute is a fully recyclable alternative to the traditional plastic bubble bag, made from sustainably sourced paper, offering the same level of protection via an internal corrugated design. The design lends itself to provide a better surface which to print on, as it is smoother and more streamlined than its plastic counterpart. Therefore, they have invested in a brand new machine allowing them to customise and print CMYK. Peak believe that by making this commitment, they are not only providing

a quick turnaround for customers, but are showing faith in the value of this product. The sleekness and lightness of the Enviroflute cleverly addresses the problem of “empty space packaging”, as well as benefitting customers from significantly reduced postage, storage, holding and transport costs, thus also boasting a reduction in C02 footprint. With a whole warehouse aisle dedicated to holding the 10 sizes in stock, Peak has been able to immediately provide a solution to new customers enquiring as to what they can offer to help them with their postal requirements: Long-standing customers have seen the benefits of the new offering, commenting: “Very happy with the stock you sent and the cost, we would happily order the same again, great quality and good service” “The stock we received was good quality and came within a reasonable amount of time” — with their new machine, Peak were on this occasion able to offer a two day turnaround from order to delivery. All in all, the Enviroflute is the cost-effective

answer that the print and direct mail industry has been looking for since the world woke up to the problem of plastics in our environment. Contact Peak Envelopes today to find out how this can benefit your company and help protect our world for future generations. www.peakenvelopes.co.uk

New Intec BC480 Business Card Cutter Intec Printing Solutions Limited, innovators in digital imaging and finishing, continues its expansion of unique solutions by introducing the ColorCut BC480 as part of the ColoCut range of digital cutting and creasing equipment. The Intec ColorCut BC480 is an affordable and fast business card cutter. Setting new standards in cost, flexibility and speed, the BC480 works alongside any digital printer, or even digital photocopier, to produce professionally-cut business cards — automatically, easily and fast. The BC480 is a compact desktop device that will easily find a home in any print shop environment. Using one of a series of self-

sharpening cutting cassettes, the Intec BC480 automates and simplifies business card production — cutting an SRA3 sheet of 21 x cards in just over eight seconds. This enables users to cut 250 x business cards in only 96 seconds! The feeder tray can hold, stack and auto-feed a quantity of printed sheets, leaving

the operator to multitask in confidence. Ultra-accuracy is standard — Able to sense the sheet’s front edge, the BC480 cuts at precise intervals, as required. before. It also boasts incredible dimensional accuracy of ±0.2mm, is two times faster than other desktop 3D printers and manages everything within a seamless print workflow.

Express Encapsulation Install Comet Express Encapsulation, the Bristol-based trade encapsulation specialist and laminating film supplier, has installed a new purpose built encapsulating machine. The high-speed Comet from D&K will assist in increased demand for its encapsulating service. Allen King, the firm’s Managing Director, said the new machine could cope with run lengths in the millions. Mr King said “We chose D&K to build the machine for us not just because of our long history, but also because we knew we could rely on the build quality and excellent aftersales service.” When asked about the bespoke build of the machine Mr King said: “We have worked very closely with D&K on this over many months to ensure it incorporated several features that our experienced machine operators’ recommended. We recognised that they are the guys who run the equipment so they

should have a major say in the build.” The Comet has been linked to a bespoke feeder and has a working width of up to 540mm. Also featured is a built-in scrap trim rewind unit, plus an integral catch tray to collect guillotined centre waste. “I believe that we now have the fastest encapsulating machine in the country” King said, “It is an extremely high-speed piece of equipment. We already have many large fully automatic encapsulating lines which are currently used to capacity, now with the introduction of the Comet, we have the potential increase it still further.” Express Encapsulation are one of the largest trade houses in the UK also supply the print trade with digital and litho laminating films compatible with every make and model of laminating machine on the market today. www.dkeurope.co.uk

“We are extremely grateful to MakerBot for ensuring we were able to get access to the very first Method units coming into Europe for the Southern Manufacturing Show. “It demonstrates just how important the UK market is, and how it can really benefit from this new category of 3D printer. Our three resellers partners are all very excited about the opportunity.” Will concluded: “Visitors were able to see demonstrations of the new MakerBot Method 3D printer throughout the show and see how this bold new category of 3D printer can help enliven design and prototyping workflow.” www.artsystems.co.uk

New Océ Arizona 1300 flatbed Canon UK has launched the new Océ Arizona 1300 flatbed printer series for mid-volume sign and display graphics producers, with the aim of helping customers to increase production efficiencies and address market demand for more varied applications. Suited for customers producing up to 15,000m² per year and offering printing speeds up to 52.8m² per hour, the Océ Arizona 1300 Series comprises six models, all designed from the ground up for optimum ease of use and reliability. Customers can choose from three GT models (Océ Arizona 1340 GT, 1360 GT, 1380 GT) with a flatbed area of 1.25m x 2.5m, or three larger 2.5m x 3.08m XT models (Océ Arizona 1340 XT, 1360 XT, 1380 XT). The new series has been developed to meet the needs of customers who are ready to upgrade their first flatbed or hybrid printer and are looking for a more productive, high quality product built for maximum uptime, while seeking the versatility to handle an even broader range of media for diverse applications. New solutions for maximum productivity — To maximise productive uptime, the Arizona 1300 printers are the first Océ flatbed products to feature LED curing options, offering customers the scope to print as needed from standby mode, without waiting for UV lamps to heat up. The new series also introduces Océ Arizona Xpert, an innovative software solution that simplifies and automates complex jobs, including multi-layered and duplex applications, so that print files are ready in an instant. The intuitive software stores the print-ready file,

enabling similar future jobs to be prepared more quickly and easily by the customer time after time, for long-term production efficiencies. In addition, the new devices are the first Canon flatbed products to include Océ Remote Service for maximum uptime and on-going technical support. With this tool, customers can better monitor ink consumption and print volumes, enabling them to receive customised service contracts based on their individual business requirements. Designed for any application need — The LED curing technology of the Océ Arizona 1300 Series offers print service providers (PSPs) the opportunity to work with an even broader range of applications on almost any rigid or flexible media, and when handling challenging media, such as canvas, wood, tile, glass, etc. The LED-UV inks used with the new models are UL GREENGUARD Gold certified, meaning prints can also be used safely in sensitive indoor

environments, including schools, hospitals or retail environments. Canon is the only digital flatbed technology provider that now offers both conventional and LED curing solutions, giving customers a printer for nearly every application need. With optional light cyan (LC), light magenta (LM), varnish and white inks, as well as enhanced screening, the new flatbed devices also enable customers to produce higher value work, delivering superior print quality even for photographic and fine art applications. For customers looking to differentiate their product offering, the Océ Arizona 1300 Series can be used with the Océ Touchstone textured printing solution, which enables the production of enhanced prints with textured effects. The machine also has an additional Roll Media Option to handle flexible media, while optimising production. www.canon.co.uk

Premier Paper launch Garda Gloss and Satin Premier Paper has announced that it is now able to offer Garda Gloss and Satin on an exclusive basis in the UK. Made by Cartiere del Garda in Italy, the range is a two side coated woodfree paper with an excellent finish — either in gloss or satin. In terms of quality and performance, the paper offers high levels of runnability and superior results both on-press and in the finished product. Sheet formation and dimensional stability are two key factors in maintaining high speed sheet feeding. Both the characteristics are strictly controlled in the manufacturing of the papers in this range. A special formulation ensures that the printing surface of Garda Gloss and Satin gives precise dot transfer even in the finest areas of the image. The surface characteristics enhance the ink gloss and tonal density of pigments for clear reading of text and accurate reproduction of colour images. The surface coating includes latex additives which

help to resist surface cracking on the fold. With exceptional drying times, the paper’s characteristics also include the regularity of its micro porosity levels, so that printing ink penetrates the coated surface evenly which promotes quick oxidisation and polymerisation of pigments and resins. Garda Gloss and Garda Satin are ideal for the production of books, brochures, catalogues, covers, direct mail, folders, inserts, packaging, postcards and much more, and available in a range from 90 to 400 g/m2. Premier Paper offers a strategically placed network of local branches across the UK, and its centrally located main depot in Minworth, whilst its specialist, dedicated divisions are geared towards specific markets, helping the company to support customers with all their paper and print media needs. www,paper.co.uk

TRADE SUPPLIER FOCUS

THE ANSWER IS YES. NOW WHAT IS THE QUESTION? Quick print professionals are so often asked for print services not produced in-house. Never say no, or you run the risk of losing your regular work when your customer goes walkabout.

[B]

etter to say yes and source a trusted trade supplier to help you fulfil your customers’ expectations of your total print services, and gain that extra revenue stream you’d miss out on if they went elsewhere. Carbonless NCR and printed envelopes have probably never been seen within the print industry as the most attractive members of the print family, and are products that are usually bypassed by many copy shops and printers in favour of other forms of stationery and printing. However, these are used every day by hundreds of thousands of businesses and are a great repeat order revenue stream that many are missing out on either through lack of capability or knowledge.

Get to know www.TPUK.trade, their tradeonly site. This Northern Ireland-based print firm has been helping other print companies to maximise their mark-ups in these two sectors by concentrating on outsourcing white label subcontracts. “There is a great mark-up potential with NCR and envelopes,” said Colin Thompson, Director of Trade Printing Group Ltd. “We can handle everything through our laserfocused site www.TPUK.trade which has a super quick order process [from the second order] that can whiz you through it from initial order choice to final upload and payment within less than 40 seconds — one of the quickest in the industry — saving precious time to get on with your day,” he added.

can take anywhere between 5-21 days. TPUK understand that as a trade supplier their industry clients need the goods delivered fast. The prime focus on envelopes is a superior 120gsm peel and seal, the most popular choice with existing clients, offering an upmarket, secure and robust envelope with the addition of full colour over-printing on one or two sides. You can offer designs that can even bleed to the edge front and back if required. “We’ve gone after a specific segment of the trade,” said Thompson, “with a more upmarket potential for the likes of Freepost and Business Reply envelopes allowing the addition of a full colour logo for short run prices. Envelopes are presented in an attractive box too that clients really love.” With their carbonless NCR offering, TPUK also focus on modern full colour NCR which quick print pro end users demand and can help companies save time by using their NCR templates once they register with the site. NCR sets, pads and books are all available with optional extras of sequential numbering, attached hinged writing shields, and drill holes also available.

With over 500+ five star customer reviews on the retail website TradePrintingUK.com is proving that essential customer service is backed up on all their products. www.TPUK.trade

Free white label delivery throughout UK and Ireland on all orders is offered to all QPP readers. Trade Printing Group Ltd, has been specialising in these two products for many years (since 1992) and have moved forward with them as technology has allowed and these days focus solely on full colour carbonless NCR and printed envelopes.

What makes TPUK.trade unique for NCR and envelopes within the trade is their super-fast turnarounds — ‘printed and delivered FREE in 3-5 working days’ or if required, sooner using the Express service. The rest of the print industry

PIXEL PROPHET

NOT SIMPLY RED The end of February and the beginning of March brings the first signs of a welcome spring, snowdrops, daffodils and birdsong. But if you’re a hardened petrol head the dawning of a new year means the wheeling out of new cars for pre-season testing in advance of the Formula One Championship opening race in Australia. Martin Christie jumps into the driving seat…

[O]

ver the winter, while the drivers have had a break, those clever people behind the screens have been working on lots of new ideas to make the cars go even faster, with their computer simulations, fluid dynamics and wind tunnel scale aero models. All of this considerable expense and effort to lose a few precious tenths of a second over the opposition. Each hoping they have come up with a trick that will give them that edge, and hoping they can keep it hidden before the others catch on. This year Ferrari, as well as all the novelties under the new skin, have come up with something very obvious on top of it. They have changed the paint job. For fifty years the Italian marque has been blood red — scarlet as Murray Walker would always announce it. Sometimes diluted with a little white and black from tobacco sponsorship, but always bright, bold red. For 2019 they haven’t changed the colour, they’ve changed the finish. Instead of a brilliant gloss, they’ve gone for a matte coating. But this is not for any reason of air flowing faster over the bodywork. You might expect gloss would actually slip through the air better. No, this is because someone clever at Marennello worked out that it was several hundred grams lighter. This well-kept secret was all well and good until the covers came off and the car was revealed to the media with its drivers in all its glory. For what the clever technicians may not have taken into account in their calculations was something any printer could have told them — it was a different colour, it was almost orange when alongside the rest of the team’s paraphernalia. Outrage ensued when fans of the Prancing Horse saw the new car on social and broadcast media, especially as orange is the native colour of former fierce rivals Mclaren. This was almost a national insult, at the very least a slight on Latin automotive tradition. The team principals and the management at Fiat are so far staying tight-lipped on their feelings about this change of hue but whether the colour stays will rather depend on whether the car really is faster, and if it wins the tifosi may have to learn to love it.

Of course we are all too familiar with the issues of colour reflected from different media surfaces, especially as we are working most commonly with designers and creatives whose working experience has been entirely devoted to a bright backlit screen. What was basic instinct to a traditional printer seems to have been overlooked in the present curriculum of graphic design so that colours carefully worked out on the computer are just expected to translate automatically into their correct state in hard copy. You can understand a private customer, creating a little something from a free app on a phone, being surprised that it doesn’t print exactly like if does on their little hi-res screen when it’s no longer illuminated from the rear and converted into solid ink drops. But professionals who are supposed to be trained, and employed specifically to know what they are doing is another thing. Often they are obsessed with Pantone references, failing to grasp the difference between spot colour and process colour in printing. Pantone inks are specific colours to give an accurate, solid single coat. Images processed by modern digital presses, in CMYK, create colour

by using a combination of those four inks — or more in the case of more sophisticated inkjet printers — to produce a composite colour actually consisting of many multi-coloured individual dots. The proportions of the various colours will vary depending on how the printer translates the digital equation sent to it, which is why there can be such a variance between one machine and another. And that’s before you take into account the colour profile used to create that information. All of these variables make accurate colour reproduction extremely difficult. Pantone themselves say that CMYK colours can only match their own no more than 55% of the time, and even that will take a lot of time and trouble — more than most customers will want to pay for. This doesn’t mean that Pantone colours are redundant in the digital world, they are an important reference, but they are only an approximate when trying to apply to a print on demand service. On the other hand, because they mix colours, and the mix can be adjusted in the messages sent to the printer, a digital press does a better job of

Quick Print Pro • Digital Imaging

March 2019

blending shades and gradients which spot colours can’t cope with. Multi-colour inkjet printers do a better job because their additional shades of cyan, magenta and grey, mean they have more flexibility in mixing those colours for a more precise match, but ultimately there are some hues that just can’t be done. The frustration for the designer, or even an average customer, is that he or she can see a particular colour on the screen, and doesn’t comprehend why it can’t translate directly onto paper. But then the frustration for the printer studio is trying to please this obsession when most of the artwork will be viewed entirely on line where there is no colour standard at all. Even if you can get close to colour matching, there is the further issue of making sure that colour works on chosen media, coated or uncoated etc. Which brings us full circle to Ferrari and their red car that isn’t really red. Or is it? By some coincidence, we had another issue with the colour red recently — this time appearing where we didn’t want it, and for reasons very much related to the way inks are mixed in different printers, and why they can make so much difference. If you were reading last month’s column you may recall we have a new large format printer on long term test from Epson. It’s their SC- T5400 model, SC standing for Sure Colour and T for Technical, to identify it from other models in the range. It is essentially a four colour plan printer, but in reality, with a lot of improvements both major and minor, together with the latest Ultrachrome XD2 inks, it’s a lot more than that. And its capabilities were able to solve, or at least sort out, our puzzling colour issue. Just before Christmas we had to print some menu boards for a local restaurant and, as they were larger than we were able to print in-house with our 24 inch inkjet, we sent them over to one of our regular contractors who mainly prints banners and signage and therefore uses a four colour solvent printer. Usually this isn’t an issue unless colour matching is critical, but in this case it became one. The design provided by the customer was to look like a chalkboard and had shades of grey, but when it was printed and installed there was a very obvious magenta hue in the background. At first glance I thought this could be lighting reflecting the hue from shiny surface but on closer inspection, the red was definitely there in the black. The source file was a PDF, and we know from experience that the format can contain buried treasure in information not immediately obvious on screen. But flattening it and rasterising it in Photoshop, checking profile and prodding it with the colour picker didn’t reveal any secrets; and our contractor, who has years of experience, couldn’t shed any light on it either. There was no point doing a reprint with the same file and printer until we could resolve the puzzle. How can something that should be black and white, and shades in between, be partially red. Sometimes a grey can have a cyan or magenta hue when incorporated in a full colour print, but that’s easier to spot and correct. This one was much more of a head scratcher. Fortunately the customer was patient, at least he had his menu board, even if it wasn’t exactly what he wanted, and it was up alongside another panel that was just black and white. So, the new year came, the 36-inch Epson arrived and now we could do the board ourselves. A test strip was done and guess what, no magenta, at least not where it wasn’t meant to be. Now we had sorted the problem, but had we solved it? The answer, or at least the probable clue, was detailed in Epson’s very useful Accounting tool, which can be downloaded from their website, and matched to any current model using the original manufacturer’s inks. This monitors every job, including the ones that go in the bin, so you can have

vivid-online.com

a running report on what your large format is costing in real time. You can plug in the cost of any media you buy, the software will measure its usage. Significantly it not only measures ink usage, but how much of each ink is used on a particular job, which is where we found the liquid equivalent of the smoking gun on this troubled one. Although there was very little other colour in the file, the printer used about 30 percent magenta, and slightly less cyan, as opposed to only 18 percent black, across what appeared to be a dominantly black background. That’s where the colour hue came from, although it didn’t show up in the Epson print as it did in the original. I’m no chemist but I would guess that waterbased pigment inks flow better and blend more smoothly than solvent ones so that the mixture becomes quite seamless. That and the probability that the solvent media is more reflective when lit. Whatever the case, it’s a good example of how composite inks create a colour output, why different printers produce different results, and why it’s sometimes impossible to match colours that are so very definite on a computer screen when they are turned into prints. We have been running an Epson 7880 eight-colour printer for over three years, and without the benefit of Epson’s accounting tool, have used the rather less scientific method of just counting the ink cartridges used. You might think inks could be consumed in roughly equal amounts, even though some jobs might call for a larger proportion of one than another. Over a year, you might imagine, they would balance out. But actually the running total tells a different story. Light Magenta is the most heavily used, with 16 per cent of the amount, followed by Light Cyan and Photo Black with 13 percent. This is not really a surprise as these are the colours that fill in the additional tonal range which an eight-colour printer can achieve rather than a fourcolour one.The 7880 actually runs three blacks, which are effectively shades of grey, and they get used in roughly equal amounts at nine percent. Interestingly actual magenta, cyan and yellow feature at around five per cent of the total each showing how much the printer leans on the intermediate colours rather than the prime ones. It will be interesting to see how the four-colour 5400, with the latest inks, compares with the older eight colour on consumption and quality so we will be monitoring it closely in the next few months.

Drytac appoints Gareth Newman Drytac®, is preparing to open a fully interactive training centre in Fishponds, Bristol: the Drytac Academy. Gareth Newman has been appointed Academy Manager and, supported by Drytac’s Global Product Manager Shaun Holdom, is developing an extensive curriculum of training courses for display graphics professionals to begin later this month. The Drytac Academy is a showcase of Drytac products and how they can be used with the newest and most popular wide-format printing technology on the market today, provided by the manufacturers themselves. This includes: a Roland TrueVIS VG-540 with Roland VersaWorks 6 RIP software; a Fujifilm Acuity LED 1600 II using Caldera RIP software; and

an HP Latex 365 and an Epson SureColor SCS80600, both powered by Onyx Thrive RIP — with more to be installed soon. The Drytac Academy also houses profiling equipment, the i-1 Pro 2 provided by X-rite, which allows custom profiles to be built. In addition to the above, the space includes a complete finishing area with a laminator and hot press vacuum press. Gareth Newman explains: “Naturally we have the entire Drytac product range at our disposal so having a full variety of machines allows our customers to learn how to get optimum results from Drytac materials using different systems and technologies. “We’ll also be working closely with the printer hardware manufacturers themselves by providing training to their employees using their own systems and Drytac materials.” This collaboration with print brands is also

contributing to the course development. “We’re asking manufacturers what their customers need: what do they want to know, what are they struggling with, how would they like to be more creative with our products?” says Gareth. “By drawing on this wealth of experience from both within and outside Drytac we’re approaching training in a fresh, new way.” The Drytac Academy will also serve as an exhibition space, showcasing how Drytac’s products can be used in real-world display applications, such as retail store fronts. The company’s innovations in adhesive-coated products include graphic films, window films, double-sided tapes, self-adhesive print media, label stock, industrial adhesives and heatactivated and pressure-sensitive laminates and mounting adhesives — all of which will have an eye-catching place in the Academy. www.drytac.com

Set to be an exciting year for the show, SDUK 2019 will host brand-new interactive features, innovative first-time exhibitors and major product launches from the big-name brands. Under this year’s umbrella theme, The Face of Innovation, thousands of visitors from across the UK, Ireland and Europe will have the opportunity to be inspired by the latest industry advances and connected face-to-face with the show’s 185 plus new and returning exhibitors. The three-day educational programme is

bursting at the seams with knowledge and insights to be shared, that guarantees to be a fully collaborative experience for visitors. So, with show organisers promising a whole host of never-before-seen highlights, what are the new features for SDUK 2019?

Seminar programme

Firstly, to make 2019 the event’s most collaborative year, visitors have been given the opportunity to help shape the show. They were offered to submit the questions they’d like to see answered at the show and the experts they’d most like to hear from. Feedback following the event is always

carefully considered and used to improve SDUK each year, but this is the first-time visitors have had their say prior to the event. With their suggestions being incorporated into the threeday programme, visitors will get the chance to hear and see these tailored insights directly on the Main Stage. Topics include Print Finishing, Interior Décor, Textile Print and Materials, Sustainability and the Environment, Print for Personalisation, and Colour Management and Workflow and of course, the effects of Brexit!

Exhibitors

As well as the show’s must-see retuning brands, SDUK 2019 is excited to welcome an innovative and varied array of new exhibitors from across the UK and Europe, including: ABC Display Industry, GMG Color, Liquid Lens Systems, Merlin Transfers, Premier Paper Group, PROTEK srl, Ricoh, Signzworld, Solar Illuminations, Target Transfers, Trade Sign Shop, UK Feather Flags and Viscom LEDs & Frames. This year’s event is also going to play host to more product launches with exciting debuts from suppliers such as Ricoh, InkTec/Jetrix, Canon, Hybrid Services/Mimaki, Roland DG, Amaya Sales UK, Trotec, GMG Color, Graphtec, Sabur Digital, Vivid Laminating Technologies and Atech.

Live-demo areas

SDUK 2019 is ramping up the show’s live demonstration areas this year with two new high energy spaces being introduced. The first, Retail is Detail, is set up in partnership with large format printing distributor and service provider Art Systems. With three demonstrations per day, the area will focus on the latest innovations in the retail signage industry, featuring cutting-edge products from Summa, HP and Onyx. Visitors can learn how to make their retail and point of sale projects more effective.

The other live demonstration area is Décor Live hosted by The Antalis Academy. Covering vinyl, wallcovering and magnetic substrates, the two live demonstrations are aimed at companies who have large format Inkjet technology who are looking to get a complete overview of all aspects of use and application as well as practical hints and tips on installation from an expert in this field. Rudi Blackett, portfolio director of the show, says: “Each year our interactive live features prove to be such a success, that we were keen to expand this and give visitors more for 2019.

We’re thrilled to introduce a new concept in the shape of the Retail is Detail area. Having the Art Systems experts on board to answer any questions and help retailers make a real difference to their productivity through insights is a truly exciting prospect for us.” Teaming up with HEXIS, SDUK will be also hosting this year’s Battle UK Wrap Contest. Consisting of two heats and a semi-final on the show floor each day, participants will go headto-head with the experts for ten minutes each time. Each day a winner will be chosen, who will all come together on the final day for one

Hybrid to debut new Mimaki technology Mimaki distributor, Hybrid Services is to host the debut of three new products at this year’s exhibition. Mimaki’s recently announced metallic LED UV ink will be on show for the first time on a Mimaki UJF-7151plus, enabling the production of high-end graphics for packaging, small to mid-format signage and bespoke décor and giftware. “The addition of a metallic ink to Mimaki’s line-up of LED UV flatbed printers offers significant revenue generating

opportunities for graphics professionals to leverage,” states Hybrid’s Chief Operations Manager, Brett Newman. “Hybrid will be demonstrating the creative potential and breadth of possibilities this exciting new technology presents to visitors to the exhibition.”

A further innovative ink will also be unveiled at the exhibition in the form of a clear option for the hugely popular UCJV300 Series LED UV printer/cutters. The addition of clear to the LUS-170 range of inks offers a host of new design possibilities and expands business opportunities by creating captivating displays using gloss, matte or textured finishes. “Utilising flexible UV inks that cure instantly allows customers to quickly print and immediately deliver the finished product without waiting for drying,” states Newman. “The UCJV printers also feature white ink, enabling users to produce brilliant colours on transparent, coloured or metallic substrates. The introduction of clear ink also places the UCJV300 series into the prototyping and packaging environment.” Underlining the variety of technologies available to view on Hybrid’s stand, a third important debut is of the high performance Mimaki TS55 dye sublimation printer. With its first showing at a UK exhibition, the 1.9m transfer paper printer is ideally suited to companies producing soft signage, retail graphics, fashion and sportswear and benefits from a winning combination of low running costs and high productivity. “Production printing is a core theme for the Hybrid stand at Sign & Digital UK this year,” Newman asserts. “Across Mimaki’s range of solvent printers and integrated printer/ cutters, LED UV roll to roll and flatbed machines and a host of textile and dye sublimation technology, we’re able to deliver a production

solution for print companies, whatever their volume requirements. Reducing lead times, increasing profitability, removing barriers to entry and delivering high quality output with the minimum of user intervention — all run centrally to Mimaki’s innovative approach to technology development,” “Sign & Digital UK is a key event for the print industry and an annual highlight for Hybrid,” continues Newman. “Our knowledgeable team relishes the opportunity to welcome customers old and new to the exhibition. It’s a great opportunity to showcase new products and present Mimaki’s award-winning portfolio in a relaxed environment. With the range of Mimaki hardware on the Hybrid stand — and shown throughout the exhibition on the stands of our reseller partners, we’re here to help visitors make the right choices for their print or manufacturing business.” Hybrid’s stand can be found right at the entrance to the halls, with further information on the Mimaki product range available via the company’s website; www.hybridservices.co.uk Newman concludes, “We look forward to meeting visitors at the exhibition, launching the new products and presenting an award-winning portfolio of Mimaki’s latest and best solutions for the print industry,”

‘Retail is Detail’ for HP and Summa Nottingham-based specialist wide format print distributor ArtSystems has announced it will focus on the latest innovations in retail signage during this year’s show. It will be exhibiting cutting-edge products from key partner vendors including HP, Summa and Onyx, and will highlight the advantages of integrated print workflows for retail signage. Supporting this, the stand will also feature HP, Neschen and SiHL media brands — and showcase the high-quality output printed on these specialist media ranges. Charlotte Crampton, Workflow Development Manager for ArtSystems, explained: “We wanted to show the flagship print and print finishing solutions of HP and Summa, and demonstrate why — with the HP Latex R2000 and the Summa F1832 both driven by Onyx 18.5 — it’s the perfect combination. “This allows us to illustrate the true benefits of a fully integrated workflow around a specific set of retail signage applications.” Charlotte continued: “ArtSystems’ team of experts will be on hand to answer any questions you have on all these products, and they will also outline how you can get the most out of

them to increase production and benefit your business, specially that all-important bottom line. “We have put a lot of emphasis on showing how even small changes in production workflows can have a significant positive cost impact on your business, and enable print professionals to expand their offering to their customers.” www.artsystems.co.uk

Local farmers’ ability to sell biomass to Iggesund Paperboard’s paperboard mill at Workington will return over 1.5 million pounds annually to the local agricultural industry. The initiative has created a totally new source of income for close to 200 farms in Cumbria and Scotland. It was recently given Rushlight Bioenergy Award. The Rushlight Awards is a set of awards designed specifically to support and promote all the latest clean technologies, innovations, initiatives and deployment projects for businesses and other organisations throughout UK, Ireland and internationally. In 2013 Iggesund invested in a biomass-fired combined heat and power plant for the primary purpose of being able to run its paperboard mill on renewable energy. Overnight the mill switched its energy supply from fossil natural gas to biomass, and thereby reduced its fossil carbon dioxide emissions by 190,000 tonnes a year, the equivalent to the annual emissions of about 65,000 cars. In conjunction with this move, the idea was born to offer local farmers the opportunity to grow and sell energy crops to Iggesund. “It’s been an exciting journey. We began in a situation where many farmers were sceptical, as farmers often are. But gradually, as they saw our commitment and our calculations for how they could earn more from their less-fertile land, more and more of them have joined our project, which we call Grow Your Income,” explains Neil Watkins, Alternative Fuels Manager at Iggesund in Workington.

®

A low cost environmental programme for you and your customers that creates woodland here in the UK.

Ulf Löfgren, Mill Director, Iggesund

The goal was to bring in 25,000 tonnes of biomass from the farming industry. After five years, it is clear that this goal will be exceeded when all the contracted crops are ready to harvest. Like so many other countries, the UK has an ageing rural population. Most farmers’ sons and daughters want to move to the big cities to become rock stars, computer geniuses or TV personalities. The older generation that remains must find less work-intensive crops which bring in a reliable income. Iggesund’s offer to the farming community involved helping with planting and also handling the harvest and transport to the mill. All these steps help to reduce the workload on the individual farms. Iggesund has also signed long index-linked contracts, which have helped to make the future income predictable. When the project began, DEFRA, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, had made recommendations that parts of Cumbria has land highly suitable for energy crops. As the project developed, it became evident that the crops also help to counteract the effects of flooding and lead to greater biodiversity. “Yet another advantage of energy crops — in our case Short Rotation Coppice willow — is that they give a good yield on less fertile land and do not lay claim to land that is better suited to food production,” Neil Watkins underlines. Ulf Löfgren, Mill Director, who was involved in creating Grow Your Income, points out additional effects than just having ensured a supply of the fuel needed to run the mill. “Cumbria and the parts of Scotland where we are active are dominated by agriculture,” he says. “Our interaction with farmers in working alongside them to grow energy crops, plus the fact that we meet with them at agricultural fairs and they come to us on study visits, has meant that we now have a far better-defined identity in the region. “In addition, we can also give ourselves a joint pat on the back for being a good example of the UN’s sustainable development goal 17, a partnership for achieving one of the other sustainable development goals. In this case, we have a collaboration between a large process industry and over 100 farmers to jointly reduce fossil emissions.” Iggesund Paperboard is growing its own eight-hectare energy crop on the land surrounding the mill. www.iggesund.com

From its launch to the beginning of 2017 the Carbon Capture programme has donated over £500,000 to the Woodland Trust. Premier is a major supporter and corporate partner of the Woodland Trust, the UK's leading conservation charity the Woodland Trust in its work to plant and conserve native woodland in numerous locations across the UK. Premier offers customers the opportunity to buy Carbon Captured products, where the CO2 emissions from the manufacture and distribution of the product has been calculated and an equivalent amount of CO2 has been captured by planting native British woodland.

Massivit 3D Printing Technologies, the provider of large format 3D printing solutions, in partnership with Marie 3D — large format 3D printing specialists — and renowned car designer, Takumi Yamamoto, unveiled the world’s first 3D printed, full-scale concept car. The tribute to David Bowie was a star attraction at this year’s prestigious Festival Automobile International (FAI) in Paris. FAI President, Rémi Depoix, said: “It is the first time in our 34 year history that we exhibited a full scale car that has been entirely produced with 3D printing. Yamamoto’s concept car demonstrates immense creativity. We were keen to support this project and present the car almost as a piece of art, very much like a sculpture. I am very impressed with this new technology. It opens up new opportunities in terms of creativity and design for the automotive industry.” Takumi Yamamoto, designer of the esteemed GT by Citroen and a former leading designer at the PSA Peugeot Advanced Design Studio, is the creative force behind this concept car which is a consummation of his life-long passions for car design and David Bowie. Paris-based Marie 3D identified that 3D

printing was the only feasible production method for implementing the concept car due to its capability to produce complex and creative geometry forms. Traditional manufacturing methods, including CNC routing, would have proven limited in terms of realising Takumi Yamamoto’s vision. Furthermore, 3D printing turned out to be more cost-effective, having a faster production speed and less waste production. The car has been 3D printed on Marie 3D’s Massivit 1800 large format 3D printer. The company has an established standing in the automobile industry and this innovative project, leveraging Managing Director Philippe Marie’s expertise in prototyping as well as his timely adoption of a Massivit 3D printer, has paved the way for an entirely new approach to producing concept prototypes. This new concept prototype production method has provided the perfect expression of Yamamoto’s imaginative and emotive dream to build a David Bowie inspired concept car that embodies Bowie’s key personal and physical traits. The design incorporates a core body that represents and ‘protects’ the inner Bowie while the intricate, outer body is designed with different looks from various perspectives in homage to the singer’s chameleon like personality. Crystals were chosen to reflect the purity of Bowie’s lyrical and musical message. Marie 3D’s Managing Director, Philippe Marie, said: “This was an exciting challenge combining a work of art with a prototype. We especially enjoyed the fact that this is the first project that has allowed us complete creative control, independent of serving a car manufacturer. We have made the most of this total creative freedom. We embarked on the

project to demonstrate the capabilities of our Massivit 3D printer in terms of size, speed and reliability. This technology provides a faster and significantly more cost effective alternative to the conventional processes, supports design creativity, geometric freedom and smoother production.” He added: “This concept car exposes a completely new method and capabilities for prototyping through 3D printing. line of continual strategic investments across the business to ensure we stay relevant for customers and continue delivering consistent, high-quality corrugated packaging solutions. “EXPERTFOLD 230 A4 drives efficiency and consistency along the processing line, meaning we can produce high quality printed boxes that our customers expect, whilst ensuring the maintenance of delivery times and schedules.” The installation of EXPERTFOLD 230 A4 complements existing BOBST machinery at the site, including a VISIONFOLD 145 A2. EXPERTFOLD 230 A4 features the unique ACCUEJECT XL device. Linked with any quality control system, it ejects skewed cartons where glue has been missed or not applied, offering real-time quality assurance and greater throughput. Vince McDermott, Operations Director at Atlas Packaging, said: “We have an excellent established working relationship with BOBST. Following an in-depth review of the market, we opted for the build quality, consistency, excellent training and technical support we can be sure of from BOBST.” EXPERTFOLD 230 A4 has the fastest set-up time in its class and can smoothly and precisely fold corrugated board up to 35 mm thick. It can handle four and six corner crash-lock containers, as well as four corner boxes on short and longer runs. Stuart Alvey-Taylor, Sales Manager, BU Sheet Fed, Bobst UK & Ireland, commented: “BOBST fuses superb build quality with innovative engineering to ensure its machines are meeting the needs of packaging manufacturers today and in the future. “For Atlas Packaging, EXPERTFOLD 230 A4 was the ideal choice for its long-term investment objectives. We are delighted that Atlas Packaging has invested in BOBST once again and pleased that the machine is delivering benefits to the company already.” www.bobst.com

Tecnau anticipates many new product launches Tecnau is excited to give its customers and prospects a glimpse of feeding and finishing innovations for high-speed colour inkjet printers which the company has begun rolling out: Revolution 50 Series for high-speed cutting and stacking; Zero Speed Splicer r40

splicing rewinder, combining with established Splicer u40 unwinder for maximum inkjet printer productivity; Libra SR for short-run production of book blocks; Dynamic scoring and creasing capability added to dynamic perforating units; and SheetFeeder roll feed systems for new sheet-fed inkjet printers

Revolution 50 Series: The highlight for the year ahead will be Tecnau’s new Revolution 50 series for web-fed colour inkjet printers, a family of products featuring top speeds up to 656 fpm/200 mpm, Internet-of-Things (IoT) compatibility, and media flexibility as required in today’s most demanding digital print environments. The first member of the Revolution 50 family, the new Stack 5250 system for cutting and stacking continuous inkjet-printed output, was first shown on Tecnau’s stand at the Print 18 in Chicago last October. Featuring the double-cutting Cutter c52, Tecnau’s Stack 5250 accommodates the broad range of papers and heavy ink coverages characteristic of the demanding graphic arts applications migrating to inkjet print as enabled by the emerging generation of high-speed inkjet presses. Tecnau has accepted Stack 5250 orders from early customers and will be making the system broadly available shortly. Zero Speed Splicer r40: Building on the company’s proven Zero Speed Splicer u40 splicing unwinder, Tecnau is now launching this splicing rewinder. Pairing the two splicers together around a high-speed web-fed inkjet press will allow customers to absolutely maximise digital inkjet productivity. With today’s fast printers completing rolls as quickly as one hour, percentage downtime due to roll changes can approach 25% or more. With the Zero Speed Splicer r40, this percentage drops to zero. Significantly, the Splicer r40 also virtually eliminates the lengthy paper waste associated with printer stoppages due to roll completion. Splicer r40 also offers media flexibility features, as it may produce mini-rolls for urgent work, or switch back and forth between rolls job-by-job to form rolls with common destinations for finishing.

Libra SR: Tecnau adds to its Libra book-block making family with the introduction of the Libra SR system for short-run production of book blocks behind high-speed webfed inkjet printers. Libra SR is based on Tecnau’s established Libra One system which incorporates fully dynamic cutting, perforating and folding modules to produce automatically books-of-one with no operator intervention from one book size to another. Available now, Libra SR offers a lower level of automation to cost-effectively produce short-run glued book blocks for inline or near-line binding, with fast manual changeovers to switch book sizes. Dynamic scoring and creasing: Dynamic scoring and creasing capability is now available on Tecnau’s dynamic processors, both the TC 1550 HS line for continuous inkjet printers and the TC 1530 line for sheet-fed processing. Each of these processor lines, with their dynamic perforating and file hole punching capabilities, may now also be ordered with added dynamic horizontal scoring and dynamic vertical creasing functionality to allow users to further expand converting processes available to their highspeed digital printing customers.

SheetFeeders: Tecnau’s recently announced SheetFeeder BV for the Xerox Brenva HD Production Inkjet Press and SheetFeeder T2 for the Riso T2 twin-engine cut sheet production inkjet platform are beginning to ship. Tecnau’s established SheetFeeder systems sit next to the input side of the press and include a quick-change unwinder, precision cutter and sheet transport. By feeding as many as 50,000 or more sheets from a single 50” diameter roll, users print more in less time while lowering paper and labour costs. www.tecnau.com

Drytac reveals new advertising product

Drytac®, a manufacturer of self-adhesive materials for the large format print and signage markets, has announced the launch of the ArmourPrint™ Emerytex® and ArmourGrab™ combination counter mat solution. Having been previewed successfully at recent trade shows, the products are now available globally. ArmourPrint Emerytex is a clear, heavy-duty, slip-resistant monomeric 15 mil (381μ) PVC film with a matte pebble textured finish on one side and a smooth printable surface on the other. It has been approved by the FDA for incidental food contact, making it ideal for advertising applications in hospitality and retail environments. ArmourGrab is an eight mil (203μ) co-extruded white anti-slip film coated with a heavy coat weight, permanent, pressure sensitive clear acrylic adhesive. Used together, the two products create a food-safe counter mat solution ideal for eyecatching POP advertising. Thanks to the slip-resistant qualities of both ArmourPrint Emerytex and ArmourGrab, these products can also be used for applications such as placemats and mouse pads. Their UV protection also enables outdoor use, while a moisture barrier protects the printed image and aids hygiene. No white ink is needed to create vivid and eye-catching counter mats as the white ArmourGrab backs the ArmourPrint Emerytex to eliminate the extra cost of printing with white. “The combination of ArmourPrint Emerytex and ArmourGrab creates a solution that is both safe and effective as counter-top advertising in fast food outlets, convenience stores, bars and more,” says Shaun Holdom, Global Product Manager at Drytac. “It’s an innovative new design and we’re delighted to offer it to our customers worldwide.” www.drytac.com

Industry first from The Pen Warehouse

Thanks to new research and development, The Pen Warehouse now offers spot colour printing on its range of soft-feel metal pens. This is a first for the industry, giving distributors a new branding option on these popular products, with larger print areas and lower pricing. Soft-feel metal pens have proved very popular over the last couple of years and demand for them is continuing to grow. These are metal pens with a rubberised coating to the barrel, giving a soft texture and a great tactile feel. Initially, these products could only be laser engraved, but The Pen Warehouse were the first in the industry to introduce full colour digital printing last year. Now The Pen Warehouse Research and Development Laboratory has created a reformulated ink system that offers superb adhesion on this challenging print surface, allowing Pantone-match pad and screen printing to be available for the first time. This new offering is now available on all soft-feel metal pens in The Pen Warehouse’s range. For more information, contact the team on 01252 400 270, email sales@pens.co.uk or visit www.pens.co.uk

Dgshape new generation De-3 Desktop Engraver DGSHAPE Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Roland DG Corporation and a leading provider of digital fabrication tools, including 3D milling machines, 3D printers, and engraving machines, has announced the launch of its latest decorating solution, the DE-3 desktop engraver. The DGSHAPE DE-3 is the culmination of over three decades of Roland engraving expertise in delivering high-quality, affordable and intuitive digital technologies to creative industries, manufacturers, retailers and education establishments worldwide. Hisashi Bito, President of DGSHAPE: “The DE-3 builds on the legacy of Roland engraving solutions that is advanced today by DGSHAPE Corporation and affirms DGSHAPE’s commitment to providing reliable, desktop solutions for the entrepreneur to build a business.” Compact yet powerful, the DE-3 offers simple set up and operation to precisely engrave a huge range of delicate and durable materials such as metals, engraving laminates and plastics, wood items and more. Ideal for use within workshop, office, classroom, and retail environments, the DE-3 delivers an impressive variety of engraving applications including industrial nameplates and labels, durable and tactile signage, awards and gift personalisation. In today’s multi-billion Euro global market for personalised goods, modern consumers demand and expect unique products, customised ondemand for them. The DE-3 enables businesses to capitalise on this key trend as an intuitive and intelligent engraving solution. Safe and robust for retailers to use in-store and portable and quiet enough for businesses to offer online unique gifts and awards. For industrial labelling and product marking applications, the DE-3’s variable data engraving technology makes it simple to personalise nameplates, tools and other industrial applications. The new DE-3 is an evolution of the highly-acclaimed EGX-350 and features a range of intelligent enhancements to make operation easier

than ever before, including the introduction of a laser-pointer, which helps set up the origin point and previews the engraving area. ‘A cornerstone of all DGSHAPE machines’, Mr Bito said, ‘is their ease of use. Operation is as simple as pressing a button. DGSHAPE prides itself on the concept of the “Open System.” This open architecture offers the flexibility of using design software and tooling that engraving professionals are already familiar with.’ For increased production flexibility in any environment, with Ethernet connectivity the DE-3 can be connected via USB or LAN. Other key enhancements include updated nose cone technology for higher quality engraving on uneven material, data buffer for offline engraving, and new bundled software: Dr. Engrave Plus. With advanced features such as AI and EPS file support, levelling and drilling functions, and variable data engraving, Dr. Engrave Plus is a design software that can create new artwork or take existing files from popular design software packages to output to the DE-3 for a true out-of-the-box solution. Safety comes first with graphics Safety should be at the forefront of everyone’s minds when creating a public space, with the choice of building materials, exit routes, sprinklers and alarms top priorities. But the safety of graphic materials should also be considered when planning campaigns in public buildings including hospitals, schools, transport hubs and retail environments. Drytac has several certified product ranges. One of the most popular brands, SpotOn®, has achieved a Class B1 Fire Rating to the DIN 4102-1 standard. This widely recognised accreditation means this product range can be used in public areas that must adhere to strict fire regulations — opening up a variety of new applications and markets. Featuring Drytac’s unique dot-pattern removable adhesive, it allows for tool-free, bubble-free application to most flat surfaces and clean removal after use. The SpotOn range is designed to be easy to use which allows non-professionals to install it — people who may be less aware of safety regulations — so it’s important that the product is as safe as possible. In addition, specialist floor media SpotOn Floor 200 has an R-10 anti-slip

rating post print according to DIN 51130 and classed as ‘low slip potential’ according to EN 13036-4. This 200 micron (8 mil) embossed printable white matte monomeric PVC film is therefore ideal for a multitude of high-impact floor graphics applications. For wall graphics, ReTac® Smooth 75 polymeric PVC film and ReTac Smooth 150 polymeric PVC film have also been developed with safety in mind. These products are designed for longer-term applications but are also easy to apply, reposition and remove. Each product has a Class 0 fire rating according to BS746 part 6 & 7 to provide certified graphics for airports, hotels, retail stores, hospitals and more.

It is important to understand that typical graphic media will do little to prevent a building fire from spreading, however certified materials will not contribute to it or spread it through flaming particles. It is essential to carry out research ahead of all display projects based on their intended location and use — with Drytac able to provide advice on its extensive range. Learn more about the safety features of the Drytac range to ensure your business and its people are protected. www.drytac.com

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Ex-girlfriend

A man and his wife are dining at a table in a plush restaurant, and the husband keeps staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sits alone at a nearby table. The wife asks, “Do you know her?” “Yes,” sighs the husband, “she’s my ex-girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up seven years ago, and I hear she hasn’t been sober since.” “My God!” says the wife. “Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?”

Lucky sevens

After leaving the dog race track Bill bumped into his old friend Peter on the bus. “Say,” Peter said, “How’s it going?” “Going? You want to hear one of the most amazing things that ever happened? Tell me, what’s today’s date?” “July seventh.” “Right. The seventh day, of the seventh month. I go to the race course at seven minutes past seven. My son is seven years old today, and we live at number seven, Seventh Avenue.” “Let me guess,” Peter interrupted. “You put everything you had on the seventh horse in the seventh race.” “Right.” “And he won!” Peter sighed. “No. He came in seventh.”

What’s for dinner?

Last night I was relaxing on the sofa watching TV when I heard my wife’s voice from the kitchen: “Oh sweetheart, what would you like for dinner, my love? Chicken, beef or lamb?” I said, “Thank you, darling. I think I’ll have chicken.” She replied, “You’re havin’ a peanut butter sandwich. I was talkin’ to the dog!”

Different Kind of Easter

Just before Easter, I remarked to my husband that with the children grown and away from home, this was the first year that we hadn’t dyed eggs and had an Easter-egg hunt. “That’s all right, honey,” he said. “We can just hide each other’s vitamin pills.”

Too Much Information

“Hello! Is this Gordon’s Pizza?” “No sir, it’s Google’s Pizza.” “Did I dial the wrong number? “No sir, Google bought the pizza store.” “Oh, alright then. I’d like to place an order please.” “Okay sir, do you want the usual?” “The usual? You know what my usual is?” “According to the caller ID, the last 15 times you’ve ordered a 12-slice with double-cheese, sausage, and thick crust.” “Okay, that’s what I want this time too.” “May I suggest that this time you order an 8-slice with ricotta, arugula, and tomato instead?” “No, I hate vegetables.” “But your cholesterol is not good.” “How do you know?” “Through the subscribers guide. We have the results of your blood tests for the last seven years.” “You know what, I’m sick of Google, Facebook, Twitter, and everyone else having all my information! I’m going to an island without internet, where there’s no mobile phone connection, and no one to spy on me!” “I understand sir. But you may want to renew your passport... it expired five weeks ago.”

Fish and chips monastery

A young hiker is traveling through a heavily wooded area and comes upon a Monastery full of friars and monks. He knocks on the door for directions, however is invited inside for “Fish and Chips” for lunch. After lunch he exclaimed that this was the most delicious fish and chips he had ever eaten. Seeing a chef emerge from the kitchen, he raced over and said, “Are you the Fish Friar? To which the reply was, “No, I am the Chip Monk.”

Prehistoric producer

What did the female dinosaur call her blouse making business? “Try Sara’s Tops!”

A bee from America

What do you call a bee that comes from America? A USB!

Organised Marriage

Two old ladies meet for the first time since they left school. One asked the other, “You were always so organised in school, did you manage to live a well-planned life?” “Oh yes,” said her friend. “My first marriage was to a millionaire, my second to an actor, third to a priest and I’m now married to an undertaker.” Her friend asked, “What do those marriages have to do with a wellplanned life?” “One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready and four to go!”

Do something nice

Unable to attend the funeral after his Uncle Charlie died, a man who lived far away called his brother and told him, “Do something nice for Uncle Charlie and send me the bill.” Later, he got a bill for £100, which he paid. The next month, he got another bill for £100, which he also paid, figuring it was some incidental expense. But when the £100 bills kept arriving every month, he finally called his brother again to find out what was going on. “Well,” said the other brother, “you said to do something nice for Uncle Charlie. So I rented him a tuxedo.”

How to hug

I went to the library the other day and found a book titled “How to Hug”. Wanting to learn the secrets of intimacy I quickly grabbed the book and headed to the checkout counter. The librarian was polite but said I couldn’t check out the book because it was the seventh volume of Encyclopedia Britannica.

Trainload Crash

A truckload of tortoises crashed into a trainload of terrapins. It was a turtle disaster.

Emergency Procedure

A guy was admitted into a hospital with eight plastic horses in his stomach. His condition is now stable.

Technically correct

A helicopter was flying around above London when an electrical malfunction disabled all of the aircraft’s electronic navigation and communications equipment. Due to the clouds and haze, the pilot could not determine the helicopter’s position. The pilot saw a tall building, flew toward it, circled, and held up a handwritten sign that said “WHERE AM I?” in large letters. People in the tall building quickly responded to the aircraft, drew a large sign, and held it in a building window. Their sign said “YOU ARE IN A HELICOPTER.” The pilot smiled, waved, looked at his map, determined the course to steer to City airport, and landed safely. After they were on the ground, the co-pilot asked the pilot how he had done it. “I knew it had to be the Microsoft Technical Support Building in Kingdom Street W2 because they gave me a technically correct but completely useless answer.”

In the news

I was visiting my daughter last night when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper. “This is the 21st century,” she said. “We don’t waste time on newspapers. Here, use my iPad.” I can tell you this... That fly never knew what hit him!

The brave wife

A husband and wife entered a dentist’s surgery. The wife said, “I want a tooth extracted. I don’t want gas or novocaine because I am in a terrible hurry. Just pull the tooth as quickly as possible.” “You are a brave woman,” said the dentist. “Now, show me which tooth it is.” The wife turns to her husband and says, “Open your mouth and show the dentist which tooth it is, dear.”

Hope it’s a boy

A woman in labour suddenly shouted, “Shouldn’t, Wouldn’t, Couldn’t, Didn’t, Can’t!” “Doctor, what’s going on?” asked the concerned father-to-be. “Don’t worry,” said the doctor, “those are just contractions.”

Car raffle

Nigel, a city copier salesman, moved to the country and purchased a car from a farmer for £100. The farmer agreed to deliver the car the following day. The next morning, the farmer drove up and said, “Sorry, son, but I have some bad news. The car broke down.” “OK, well, just return my money to me,” Nigel said. “Sorry, can’t do that,” said the farmer. “I already spent it.” “OK then, just unload the car,” said Nigel. “Whatcha gonna do with it?” asked the farmer. “I’m going to raffle it off,” Nigel replied. “You can’t raffle off a broken-down car!” the farmer exclaimed. “Of course I can,” replied Nigel. “Watch me. I just won’t tell anybody it doesn’t work.” A few weeks later, the farmer met up with Nigel and asked, “So, what happened with the car?” “I raffled it off. I sold 500 tickets at two pounds a piece and made a profit of £898,” explained Kenny. “Didn’t anyone complain?” inquired the farmer. Nigel proudly replied, “Just the guy who won. So, I gave him his two pounds back.”

One friend says to another, “Did you know that the shortest sentence in the English language is ‘I am’?” “Really?” replies the other. “What’s the longest sentence?” “I do.”

Twin beds

An older couple was asking for a hotel room with a king, queen or double bed. The clerk apologised and said that the only rooms available had twin beds. Disappointed, the man remarked, “I don’t know. We’ve been sharing the same bed for 44 years.” “Could you possibly put them close together?” the wife asked. Several people nearby smiled, and someone commented, “How romantic.” Then the woman finished her request with, “Because if he snores, I want him close enough to be able to elbow him.”

The sharp salesman eyewitness

While Mark was in a showroom looking at a new printer, one of the salespeople came running up to him. “Mark! Mark! I just saw someone driving off with your BMW!” “Blimey! Did your try to stop him?” “No,” said the salesman, “but don’t worry. I got the license plate number!”

It’s a numbers game

A speeding salesman was pulled over by a policeman. He asked the policeman, “Why was I pulled over when I wasn’t the only one speeding.” The policeman replied, “Have you ever been fishing?” The salesman then said, “Yes, I have.” “Well, have you ever caught all the fish?” asked the policeman.

Holding down a job

A young ex-salesman was a very slow worker and subsequently found it difficult to hold down a job. After a visit to the employment office, he was offered work at the local zoo. When he arrived for his first day, the keeper, aware of his reputation, told him to take care of the tortoise section. Later, the keeper dropped by to see how the young man was doing and found him standing by an empty enclosure with the gate open. “Where are the tortoises?” he asked. “I can’t believe it,” said the new employee, “I just opened the door and whoosh, they were gone!”

Love for the in-laws

My wife told me that I did not love any of her relatives... I told her that is not true. I said, “I love your mother-in-law and fatherin-law much more than I love mine.”

What’s the quickest way?

When my wife was in labour, I would tell her jokes to distract her from the pain, but she didn’t seem amused. It must have been the delivery.

A tourist was visiting a small village in West Sussex. He approached a local person and asked, “What’s the quickest way to Chichester?” The local, scratched his head, “Are yar walkin’ er drivin’?” he asked the stranger. “I’m driving,” said the stranger. “Well, that’s the quickest way.”

Labour distraction

A chemist walks into a pharmacy and asks the pharmacist, “Do you have any acetylsalicylic acid?” “You mean aspirin?” asked the pharmacist. “That’s it! I can never remember that word.”
