ROUTE 1 PRINT INTRODUCE FINAL HP INDIGO TO FLEET South Yorkshire trade printers, Route 1 Print, has enhanced their digital capabilities with the investment in both a HP Indigo 12,000 and a HP Indigo 100,000. Both of which are now fully up and running and making a start on streamlining processes around their factory to support their digital print growth. Since launching in 2012, Route 1 Print has invested in a plethora of digital, litho and inkjet finishing technology to broaden their offering of high quality, low-cost and fast turnaround print. In October 2021, they announced their investment in two new Indigos, the 12,000 and 100,000. The first of the two arrived onsite at their factory in Rotherham back in November 2021 and was quick to compliment Route 1 Print’s existing digital equipment, giving them more capacity in flat and folded work with a short medium run length for increased versatility and optimum output. They are happy to announce that the second Indigo Press 100,000 has now been installed and is up and running. The HP Indigo 100,000 is the world’s most productive B2 digital solution with true digital non-stop print capabilities, at 6,000 sheets per hour. Designed to improve Route 1 Print’s competitive short runs and digital print capabilities, both new machines are now fully
functional and improving digital efficiency by over 60%. Route 1 Print plan to continue improving their factory and equipment to meet the needs of the business as it grows. Mark Young, Managing Director of Bluetree Print, had this to say: “We are incredibly pleased to have completed the installation of both presses and we’re excited to see how this duo will enhance our digital efficiency. It’s improvements like this that will really help us to support our customers as the print industry changes.” Young goes on to highlight: “HP has also been extremely helpful during this transition. Their support has allowed us to seamlessly integrate these new machines into our existing arsenal without a single hiccup.” www.route1print.co.uk
INKY LITTLE FINGERS LOVING HORIZON BQ-500 PERFECT BINDER Gloucester commercial digital printer Inky Little Fingers has increased production capacity with investment in a Horizon four clamp BQ-500 iCE Binder from Intelligent Finishing Systems. Laurence Felton, Managing Director, explains: “Perfect Binding is central to our business. The higher production speed and enhanced automation of the BQ-500 gives us a significant boost in productivity with the same number of staff. We liked the enhancements it delivered over our existing single clamp Horizon BQ-280 system. There is also an upgrade path to integrate this machine with the HT-300 for higher automation should we need this in the future.” Laurence made the decision on paper. He expands: “Due to Covid evaluating other manufacturers equipment would have been very difficult if not impossible. We chose the Horizon BQ-500 primarily because we trust IFS and Horizon to deliver a reliable product that does what they say it does. We are a long standing customer and IFS had made us aware of this machine before its launch.” The 800bph Horizon BQ-500 four clamp Perfect Binder builds on the successful tried and trusted features of its BQ-470 and BQ-480 predecessors. Its enhanced functionality includes highly automated set up via a large 12.1 inch colour touchscreen, memory storage of up to 999 jobs, pre-installed variable software capability and variable thickness production of 5mm. It is pre-installed with Horizon’s cloud based iCE LiNK workflow that provides access to an intuitive, easy to use dashboard that reports real time production analysis for improved efficiency and profitability, remote update capabilities and scheduled maintenance, resulting in less downtime. It also incorporates new design features that aid easy operation. They include a status light that indicates, at a distance, how the binder is running, and an ergonomic design where all
the operator required actions are on the same side. On the new equipment Laurence stated: “As with all of our Horizon equipment, we expect the machine to perform to a high standard for many years. It has only been installed for a few days, but we are pleased with the machine so far. Our product quality on the BQ-280 was excellent. Our product quality on the BQ-500 is also excellent. The difference is that we have greater capacity with the same number of staff. We will also be presenting a number of eco friendly possibilities to demonstrate how application versatility can answer a broad range of market needs.” www.epson.co.uk
KELLMATT MOVES UP TO MORGANA DIGIFOLD PRO XL Borehamwood based digital print company Kellmatt Limited has upgraded its Morgana DigiFold Pro to the latest DigiFold Pro XL. Matt Weir, Director, said: “It was a straightforward decision for us to upgrade to the latest version. We have been a Morgana user for 20 years plus, and most of our post-press equipment comes from them, so there was no need to look elsewhere. Morgana equipment is solidly built and has served us very well over that time. “The cross perforation capability was the major attraction. We had been sending that kind of work out, so this machine will put control back in our hands, save production time, and save us money. “The ability of the machine to handle long sheets came a close second as far as features. We run a Xerox iGen and an Iridesse, so the fact that we can handle 660mm long sheets is important, or up to 1,200mm for special products. It’s another feature for us to sell and for our in-house design team to promote.” The wholly digital business was formed some 30-years ago, and includes large format production as well as the Xerox digital presses, some

monochrome printers for variable data printing, and a graphic design studio. The company started life in the print world by producing self-adhesive labels, then morphed into a reprographics company, producing Cromalin proofs for high-end graphic customers, and then became early adopters of digital print. The Morgana DigiFold Pro XL is built with a unique, open design, and a suction feeder that handles stock sizes from 210mm to 1,300mm in length. This heavy duty automatic creasing and folding system is designed to complement mid to high volume digital and offset production presses. This top of the range model folds up to 6,000 A4 per hour, or in “crease only” mode 7,500 per hour. It has a maximum loading capacity 200mm, and a stock range of 80 to 400gsm. The top fed vacuum feeder, ensures stable production for long runs. Full cross perforation is also available, along with the ability to add up to five inline perforation/scoring wheels. The machine is able to create up to 30 creases per sheet. The Morgana DigiFold Pro XL is designed to also complement the long sheet capabilities enabled in the today’s production printers. It features a standard pull-out extension that enables sheet sizes up to 1,300mm to be handled with ease. www.morgana.co.uk

EBBSFLEET ENDORSES UK’S FIRST FUJIFILM ACUITY PRIME PRINTER Gravesend based sign shop and digital print company Ebbsfleet Printing Solutions has praised the Fujifilm Acuity Prime flatbed printer as the best machine of its kind, saying it is a level above any other printer at the same price point. The Acuity Prime printer was purchased from RA Smart – which was appointed as the first UK partner for the Acuity Prime by Fujifilm late last year – and installed in January 2022. After an initial consultation and careful consideration of Ebbsfleet’s requirements, Adam Booth, Director at RA Smart, had no hesitation in recommending the Acuity Prime from Fujifilm as the optimal solution to Ebbsfleet’s needs. Ebbsfleet Printing Solutions initially booked a video demonstration of the Acuity Prime with RA Smart. With a pedigree in print technology stretching back some 50 years, and a long standing relationship with Ebbsfleet during which time there have been multiple production equipment installs, RA Smart was the logical choice to find the Kent based company a solution for their growing wide format graphic business. After being impressed by the printer’s capabilities, the company booked in for a live demonstration at Fujifilm’s facility in Broadstairs, Kent. On site, staff from Ebbsfleet Printing Solutions were able to view the machine up close and witness first hand the quality of print it produces. At the end of the demonstration, Ebbsfleet Printing Solutions placed its order for an Acuity Prime. Ebbsfleet Printing Solutions Director Sam Cherry, said such was the quality of print produced during both the video and live demos, that he is more than comfortable saying that the Acuity Prime is by far the best printer of its kind. “We almost didn’t believe what we were seeing,” Sam says. “The printer performed beyond our expectations, but as it’s a new printer to the market we felt it was necessary to go and take a closer look. We liked what we saw, and we placed our order whilst there at Fujifilm’s facility in Broadstairs.
“It’s our belief that the Acuity Prime flatbed performs at a level above any other printer within its price point. In fact, the other machines we considered that offered this level of print productivity were typically double the price. “I don’t believe there is any better way we could have spent this amount of money in terms of the overall quality, print capability and production capacity we’ve just added to our business with the Acuity Prime.” The printer has already had a big impact on operations. “Securing the printer means that we can provide a better service to our customers, being able to meet their deadlines in a world where time is of the essence,” Sam says. “We can provide a more streamlined approach along with a great end product. “We were looking for a more efficient solution; something that could reduce the time it takes to print whilst saving money. We’ve only been using the printer for a week or two and are really impressed with the output; we’ve already used it to print on Acrylic, Foamex and Dibond.” Since its launch, the Fujifilm Acuity Prime printer has become the benchmark platform for cost effective, versatile print production. A true flatbed with a unique, exceptional design, it offers high quality printing on a range of media.
It offers incredibly reliable speeds of up to 150sq m/hr on almost any flexible and rigid media, with an LED curing system that is immediately ready for use in standby mode. This level of flexibility makes the printer the ideal choice for use in a wide range of applications for both distant and close viewing. The printer can be configured with either four, five, six, or seven colour channels, each of which is populated with ink sets that best suit the user’s application needs, including CMYK, white, clear and a jettable primer for excellent adhesion to more industrial media types. On the partnership of Fujifilm and RA Smart, Colm Garvey, the newly appointed EMEA WFIJ Dealer Manager at Fujifilm, adds: “To capitalise on the strengths of our exciting new wide format portfolio Fujifilm is keen to work with leading dealers in wide format digital print. In the UK, RA Smart stood out as an excellent potential partner for us. “They have a great reputation in selling solutions for fabric printing and their superb customer support ethos fits in very well with Fujifilm’s own approach. Once RA Smart made the decision to branch out from fabric printing into the more general Sign & Display market, the potential benefits to both companies became clear.” www.rasmart.co.uk

PLOCKMATIC AND CANON UV LED COATING SOLUTION Canon has announced that a close collaboration with Plockmatic, a global supplier of finishing solutions to the print and mailing businesses, has resulted in the seamless, inline integration of the Canon varioPRINT iX-series digital inkjet sheet fed press with the Plockmatic DigiCoater Pro 400 HD LED paper coating machine. Thanks to its offset like print quality, high productivity and compelling cost efficiency, the varioPRINT iX-series has proved to be a popular investment for commercial and online printers, and its integration with the DigiCoater Pro 400 HD LED further extends its already broad application flexibility, making it an even more attractive option. The combination of the two technologies means that varioPRINT iXseries customers in EMEA can now not only produce high quality, UV-coated applications, but can do so at rated engine speed in a single automated workflow. Commercial print users of the varioPRINT iX-series that want to produce business cards, postcards, photo merchandise, book and magazine covers and printed applications where coating adds value, can now maximise their productivity by connecting the DigiCoater Pro 400 HD LED inline. The integration removes both the need for manual intervention and the risk of a production bottleneck and allows commercial printers to deliver applications of a glossy, higher value look and feel and to meet the shortest turnaround times. By opting to use a flood varnish in the production of such applications, not only are the results more eye-catching, but the coating also protects the printed materials against wear and tear, water, dirt and food. Thanks to the low coating coverage — only 2-4g/ m2 of varnish — required to complete the UV curing process, the print enhancement is far more cost
efficient compared with traditional technologies, which use 15 — 30g/m2 in varnishing processes. Because both machines run at the same rate, material can be printed and then coated by the Digicoater without compromising the performance or speed of the varioPRINT iX-series engine. And as the finished coated output is delivered at room temperature, the sheets are ready immediately, with no wrinkling or shrinkage, for further finishing. With the two machines connected via an open SFD interface, the bi-directional communication between the varioPRINT iX-series and the Plockmatic Digicoater Pro 400 HD LED results in a highly efficient, end to end workflow. The level of compatibility and automation delivered by the interface means that the print engine’s PRISMAsync controller can be easily alerted to misprinted single sheets and the varioPRINT iX will automatically reprint them without having to reprint the whole job. Stuart Rising, Head of Commercial Print, Production Printing Products, Canon UK & Ireland comments: “Once again, Canon has enabled its customers to achieve greater rates of productivity and faster turnaround times using automation made
possible with inline integration. The high quality printed output from the varioPRINT combined with the embellishment capabilities of the Plockmatic Digicoater Pro 400 HD LED is a winning combination for any commercial printer wishing to capitalise on the growing market demand for enhanced printed applications. We’ve found a way for our customers to widen their product portfolio and increase their profit margins, while maximising the impact of applications and minimising production costs.” Speaking about the partnership with Canon, Plockmatic Group’s VP Business Unit Inline & Group Technical Support, Johan Mikaelsson, says: “The innovative technology of the Digicoater Pro 400 HD LED enables commercial print operations to enhance the value of their printed applications and drive down the cost of production. We see the combination of the Digicoater Pro 400 HD LED with the Canon varioPRINT iX-series as a perfect match that will drive business growth as well as customer satisfaction.” For more information on the varioPRINT iX-series, visit: www.canon.co.uk. AVERY DENNISON LAUNCHES FIRST VEGAN LABELS Avery Dennison has achieved another market first with the launch of a new certified portfolio of vegan labels, which contain no animal derived components. Additionally, every item in the portfolio was created without animal testing, or the use of GMOs of animal origin. Because of this, the collection has received approval from EVE VEGAN®, an independent organisation created by Vegan France, which works to promote vegan alternatives in different industries, including food and medicine. At the time of launch, there are six paper face stocks, three adhesives and two liners in the collection, and they can be mixed and matched according to customer needs. Each item offers a similar level of performance to non-vegan alternatives in both converting and application. Based on converter and end user needs, there are plans to expand the range with new paper face stocks. “Veganism goes beyond diet,” says Luuk Zonneveld, product manager at Avery Dennison. “It’s a philosophy and way of life centred on avoiding animal exploitation for food, clothing and everything else you can think of. Naturally, this extends into the world of packaging, and we’re excited to help brand owners take their dedication to being cruelty free to the next level with these innovative labels developed by our R&D team.” Suitable for the beauty, wine and spirits and food and beverage sectors,
8
the new labels also serve as a unique selling point for brands. Thanks to the certification, companies can let consumers know their entire purchase – packaging included – abides by their values. “We’re very proud to have received EVE VEGAN® certification and consider it a powerful symbol that lets brand owners, and their customers, know we take our commitments seriously.” says Luuk. Through our Xeikon Solution Services (XSS), customised versions and different configurations are possible as the customer’s business grows, depending on the application and volumes required, e.g. from a basic varnish through to automatic laser die-cut capability and wider web versions up to 520mm. The integration of the units in the Xeikon LCU series along with cloud connection offers full automation possibilities for both process and information exchange across all equipment. The Xeikon LCU Series are designed to work inline and offline with both Xeikon’s Panther and Cheetah digital presses.” With Xeikon’s LCU series, automation is available for (a) processes: such as optional automatic turret rewind or optional die plate change, and (b) job information: which allows data transfer to different units, giving transparency and insight to the operator of the various status and functionality of the converting steps. The Xeikon LCUs next generation machine/machine and
man/machine interfaces give the operator full insight into the progress of each converting step. Operators can monitor every process from lamination, diecutting, slitting, winding, hot foiling and screen printing. The varnishing station comes with increased varnishing width and varnishing register, and an easy upgrade to spot varnishing. Xeikon’s new LCU series is highly accurate in terms of precision for cutting and precise registration. The Xeikon LCU series has exceptional functionality and can be expanded with options that increase the overall OEE of an operation – such as additional flexo stations to avoid change over between different varnishes, automated laser die-cutting to avoid die-plate change over and increase turnaround, auto die-plate change to reduce setup time and hot foil, and screen printing stations to expand application range. The die-cutting can happen semi-rotary at 80m/min to a maximum full rotary speed of 130m/min. Every facet and operational step of the LCU series has been carefully considered and geared for higher efficiency. To contribute to the digitalisation of print manufacturing, the Xeikon LCU series has 1) builtin cloud connectivity for data collection and remote service. The collected data is translated into key information that helps operators in their day to day decisions making. 2) Machine/ machine interfaces on Xeikon’s Panther 2.0 UV inkjet presses and Xeikon’s Cheetah 2.0 dry toner presses and (3) Man-machine interfaces which give additional autonomy to the operator. Van Bauwel concludes, “This is an exciting new development for the converting industries. From the converter’s point of view, not only will he now have the latest fully automated and high quality finishing and embellishing capabilities, but he will also have the flexibility to customise his finishing department and combine a number of different processes to maximise his label applications and extend his label portfolio to grow his business. Xeikon is also addressing customers who are on a smaller budget. The Xeikon LCU33 is an entry level model designed for smaller business operations. It is an attractive investment, upgradeable and market competitive. With our new LCU series all, processes are now connected in one smooth process from file to finish. With the cloud connection, the operators can now rely solely on the capabilities of the Xeikon machines. Converters today are constantly searching for new technologies and equipment to enable them to meet the high levels of demand from brand owners for the latest sophisticated and unique embellishments plus high quality finish to attract consumers. With Xeikon’s new LCU series, they will have all they need to take the next step to full digitalisation in label production and manufacturing.” www.xeikon.com

THE CAMERA IS NOT DEAD, YET!
Only a few years back, there was a major advertising campaign from one of the then major smartphone companies about how they were changing the face of photography forever with their intelligent camera phones. Martin Christie wrote a very sceptical column about it at the time; however smart the device, it still needs a human eye to produce anything truly creative and original, not just a computerised reproduction.
Y
ou may remember the campaign, but you probably won’t remember the company’s name. Unfortunately, ironically, it has fallen victim to its overambitious technology, and photography has had the last laugh. Of course, that won’t stop the phone - we don’t even need to use the adjective mobile to define it anymore - being the most popular capture device in day to day use, it’s just that there has been a bit of a reality check on the possible. Digital photography has dramatically changed how we snap and share images in the last twenty years. Before the days of film, though every family probably had a camera, it was most often only dragged out for holidays and special occasions, not every time something caught our attention. Moreover, early popular digital cameras were rather basic and the more professional ones rather bulky and expensive, until smaller and faster processors enabled better performance at a lower price. Enter the affordable DSLR, modelled on the traditional single-lens reflex 35mm to give it a familiar look to established and aspiring users, with models produced to suit various budgets. It rapidly became the must-have gadget, swung around the neck of enthusiastic amateurs, and enjoyed a decade when sales boomed, around 2010 onwards. It was that boom that was probably hit hardest in recent years when the highresolution smartphones started to arrive; many customers who might have been looking to upgrade from a cheaper compact camera were tempted by the much-hyped specifications of the new arrivals. After all, why carry two gadgets when you only need one? Sales slumped, and a number of camera retailers went out of business, so it was all too easy to predict the end of the line for the conventional device. But what seems to have happened is that sales have actually levelled out to somewhere they probably should have been all along, and sales of the more functional, 14
user-friendly cameras are showing signs of a resurgence. Perhaps phone purchasers are slowly discovering they won’t quite fulfil all the digital dreams presented in their promotion, particularly when turning their creations into actual print. So a small, compact, pocket-sized camera is a solution, rather than a bulky DSLR with lots of functions and lenses they didn’t understand. The upshot of this is that there is rather a lot of good camera kit on the second-hand market for those of us who still need the professional gear from owners who found they couldn’t justify their upkeep. So I’ve been able to snap up a near mint camera body as a spare for my main Nikon for a fraction of what it would have cost a year or two ago. In days of film, you always carried two camera bodies on a job, just in case one failed, and with only 35 shots in the can, you sometimes didn’t have time to change film and made every shot count. Digital cameras tend to shoot a whole lot more frames than film ones ever did, so the wear and tear is recorded in what’s called actuations — literally the number of times the shutter has been released, a bit like the mileage on a car. It reflects the amount of work it has done rather than its age and how close it is getting to the point
when expensive parts may fail and need to be replaced. Pro DSLRs should be good for hundreds of thousands if they haven’t been bashed around, the cheaper ones much less. Not many people seem to consider the possible fragility of electronic devices these days, which is a surprise when they probably contain most of their lives and all of their personal connections. But coming from a position that anything that can go wrong will go wrong, I am naturally cautious. The second body is more than a backup because I can use it for less quality critical jobs, thus saving mileage on my main one and doing something towards preserving its value in the long run. There’s also an added bonus that is worth mentioning in these disposable days in that all of the lenses and accessories I’ve collected over the years are completely compatible. Nikon has never built-in obsolescence, unlike many hi-tech companies that rely on outdated products so they can sell new ones. It means that even if both digital bodies should fail me, I could still dig out my 1980s vintage FM2, which doesn’t even need batteries to function! So personally, a slump in the sales of top of the range cameras has been to my profit — ‘it’s an ill wind’ as they say. But maybe it will also blow some better images our way at the print shop counter in due course. MARCH 2022 • QUICK PRINT PRO
PIXEL PROPHET Original: 300x120mm @ 300ppi RGB file RAW = 14.4Mb
PING IT TO ME!
One of the by-products of the smartphone revolution was the increasing use of the PNG in customer emails. This was generally because while cameras produced JPGs, tablets and other devices combined images with graphics for which the Portable Network Graphic was more suitable. It is because of the way it stores digital information, and the difference between the two is quite significant, though not many people appreciate it. The PNG has been around nearly as long as the JPG but has only become more prevalent in use recently, and mainly by those newly empowered by the portable tools who know little about the technicalities and care less. Both were designed to create smaller file sizes at a time when the transmission on the internet was severely limited. Now they are useful because of the speed at which they can be dispatched and viewed. But, as far as most people are concerned, they are the same thing — just a digital file. So there’s no reason for them to know the intimate details of compression algorithms that make them as different as chalk and cheese. But professionally, there is every good reason to know — not necessarily the mathematics but their results, at least because of the possible effect on file saving and print output. Both use compression equations to reduce file size but do it in different ways. In simple terms, a JPG crushes a file in a more linear way, like squeezing a sponge, shedding information like colour and detail it decides are unimportant. The PNG uses more complex arithmetic to reduce size without any loss in quality. This is known as LZW compression, which can also be used with TIF files and makes quite a considerable space saving, although, unlike JPG, there is a limit to how small you can go. JPGs can be squeezed until they are almost invisible and, much like a sponge, will never regain their original shape and integrity. If you save one at a maximum or high ratio (i.e. low compression) which is ten or above, if you are using the numbers slider, there is not much difference to notice. If you slide QUICK PRINT PRO • MARCH 2022

right down to the other extreme around 1 or 2 very high compression) you can find that while a small thumbnail might have enough content to show colours, it will not be able to display them all at full size or, at the very least, will lack the full range that once was there. This is the dilemma of using JPGs to store files long term, as we are now in an age where customers may have some that are ten or even twenty years old. If they have been continuously opened, saved and closed, they will be losing quality even gradually, like an old copy of a copy. More so, if changes have been made and not saved as a copy, overwriting the original is lost forever. This is why Adobe recommends using TIF for any archiving long term because it’s not affected by continued use — at least as far as we know, as no one has a very old TIF either! If there is no alternative to a JPG, the best policy is to save an original version and only work with a copy. I learnt this in early digital days with a customer complaining that colours weren’t right from a file that had been printed some time before. Only referring to the metadata in Adobe Bridge — mentioned last month — was I able to spot the smoking gun in that this wasn’t actually the same file, though the customer swore blind it was. In fact, it had been modified several times and suffered some colour desaturation as a result. So why not use PNG for saving files if it can compress them without losing quality? Because of the way it embeds details, it is very good with straight lines and solid colours — anything that has a definite edge between one thing and another. The
PNG is less good at more subtle things, like photographs of people or anything that lacks sharp contrast between one pixel and another. While they are both pixel-based files, rather than vector graphics, how they behave when enlarged and printed can be quite different. While the PNG can preserve transparency and, for example, is very good for dropping logos into artwork, it only works in RGB colour space, which may be an issue for CMYK printing. However, most printers now can handle the conversion. The transparency option is one of the most useful as cutting out images from the background of a flat JPG can be a pain. Interestingly, many product photographers who shot pack shots and the like prefer to use PNGs rather than JPGs because of its ability to preserve nice straight lines when files are exchanged. On the other hand, the PNG does not support any camera exit data, which can be quite useful to explain how it was initially created — and why, for example, it might not be as sharp or as true to colour as intended. It’s actually the best format for exchanging a screenshot too because it’s an exact copy, pixel for pixel, so you can share the closest reproduction of what you or a customer views without the interference of compression saving. But while it’s not the best file format for photo images, if the subsequent file contains a lot of overlaid text, it might be better at preserving detail in that text, which might be more critical. So it’s always going to be a compromise, but knowing which tool is best for which job, goes with the territory. 15

PICON EXPANDS IT COUNCIL WITH THREE NEW RECRUITS
Neil Jones
Kevin O’Donnell
Peter Murphy
Three Picon members have been invited to join the Council which meets five times a year to decide the strategy and direction of the trade association that represents suppliers to the graphic arts industry. The three who will attend their first Council meeting this month are: Neil Jones, Managing Director of Bobst UK; Kevin O’Donnell, Head of Marketing, graphic communications of Xerox UK, Ireland and the Nordics; and Peter Murphy, Managing Director of Turnbull & Scott. Neil Jones sees the benefits of membership in training, research and networking opportunities. As a member of the Council he hopes to draw
on his 35 years’ industry experience to give something back to the sector. He is particularly passionate about making print, paper making and converting sectors more attractive as a career path for the younger generation. He also sees Picon providing a useful forum to discuss current issues, including staff welfare during the on-going COVID pandemic and the escalating cost of raw materials for suppliers. The sense of community and opportunity to join like minded people with a common purpose is the appeal for Kevin O’Donnell of Xerox, too. “Picon offers a fantastic platform for us to see the wider picture,” he says. “We leave our rivalry at the door and come together as an organisation to drive the industry forward in areas like lobbying, health and safety and HR matters. As an industry we face continual change and challenge but Picon can help us grasp opportunities by bringing together the energy and spirit of its members for the common good.”
Peter Murphy will represent the British Paper Machinery Suppliers Association, a specialist division of Picon representing suppliers to the paper industry. The Picon Council always includes two BPMSA members. Mr Murphy believes Picon has an important role in the pandemic. “There has been a mixed impact with exporters hit hardest by travel restrictions but overall the industry has been pretty stable. The networking opportunities provided by Picon have been essential to helping members change business models through collaboration with others.” These three new members join nine others currently serving on the Picon Council: Mark Bristow (Friedheim International); Neil Sutton (Komori); Ryan Miles (Heidelberg); Andy Pang (Koenig & Bauer); Iain Bullock (Renz); Stuart Murphy (Rollem); Tim Klemz (Compact Engineering, another BPMSA representative); Robert Flather (Kolbus); and James Boughton (Edale). www.picon.com

ith there being no show in 2021, for the first time in 30 years, there is a really strong desire among both visitors and exhibitors to be back in force in April. In view of the results of a survey of 2020 visitors, in which over 75% advised they are definitely going to or very likely to visit, together with the fact that the show regularly attracts over 2,000 first time visitors, it is expected that visitor numbers will be similar to those of recent years, which have been in excess of 5,500! Printwear & Promotion LIVE! is regarded as the annual launch pad for new garment decoration equipment, accessories and clothing lines. There are currently over 100 stands booked, including the vast majority of the major equipment suppliers, clothing distributors and printwear clothing brands. Industry leading suppliers will be showcasing the very latest in garment decoration technology, including long standing exhibitor, YES Group (stand G10). John-Paul Burton, director, cannot wait to return, saying: “Now that COVID-19 restrictions have lifted, we look forward to once again showcasing YES Group at P&P LIVE! 2022. The fact is, Your Embroidery Services has been a constant attender since 1996, and it is a true testament to the organisers and the exhibitors that this event is once again safely on track.” There really isn’t a better time to expand your business’ offering and boost profits with a garment decoration add-on as the industry comes together once again. The 20
show returns to the NEC, Birmingham from Sunday, April 24 to Tuesday, April 26 to serve as both a meeting place for garment decorators and an unmissable opportunity for high street digital printers to discover how garment decoration and personalisation could prove incredibly beneficial to their business. Many print service providers have already made the move into this exciting market and reaped the rewards. Come along to the show to find out just how quick, easy and cost effective it can be for your business to get your add-on up and running. This year’s talking point is sure to be the introduction of direct to film printing systems. A process that uses a specific kind of water based ink to print a film transfer, which is then transferred directly onto garments and other substrates. The process is seen as an alternative to direct to garment printing, which first entered the scene 15 years ago. Discover options perfect for those already immersed in garment decoration and beginners alike, including: • The R-Jet PRO DTF — a standalone wide format printer. The transfers produce vibrant images with no requirement for pre-treatment. The printer is a joint venture between TheMagicTouch and Resolute DTG, with both stocking and supplying the
associated films and inks required. • The new Mutoh/STS VJ-628D printer. The 630mm wide compact desktop printer, manufactured by Mutoh in Japan, is based on Mutoh’s proven Valuejet 628 eight channel printer chassis and Epson industrial print head. This is also being demoed on TheMagicTouch’s stand. • Another stand to visit to see DTF printing in action is R A Smart. The machinery supplier will be showcasing a full DTF solution on stand. R A Smart has partnered with a pioneering producer of the entire DTF package, with patented ink and application technology developed over the past four years. • New exhibitor Indie Ink will be launching its showstopping IndieJet Pro DTF printer at an unbeatable price. This printer is the perfect entry level printer to get you started on your DTF journey. DTF printing is also made possible through the modification of direct to garment printers. Current users of the Epson SureColor SC-F2100 and SureColor SC-F2000, the Polyprint Texjet or Brother GTX direct to garment printers should visit J&B Sewing Machine Co, Amaya Sales UK and MHM Direct GB’s stands respectively to find out how to adapt these printers for DTF printing. As usual the show will provide a vibrant, dynamic and interactive event for the garment decoration industry. In addition to hosting a vast number of exhibitors who are eager to showcase their new products and garments, Printwear & Promotion LIVE! also offers a full seminar programme. The Decoration Advice Suite will host professionals providing tips and advice on every type of decoration technique, from transfer printing to digital printing. Sessions will be hosted by representatives from companies including Kornit Digital, PenCarrie and Dye Sublimation Supplies, whose session in particular is suited for beginners and those looking to find out more about direct to film printing. In The Knowledge Centre speakers will share their knowledge, with advice specific to the printwear sector. Instagram expert Estelle Keeber will share the secrets to success on this social media platform, while Alex Liggett of The Vinyl Guys will tell his story of how he started his printing business, providing perfect advice for business start-ups. Printwear & Promotion LIVE! 2022 presents the first opportunity in two years to see the latest product launches, to meet all of the major suppliers and if you’re new to the garment decoration industry to learn more from the industry experts. The show is the ideal opportunity to network with likeminded professionals and is certainly not to be missed! www.printwearandpromotionlive.co.uk

ANTALIS OPENS DOORS ON SMART NEW PACKAGING CENTRE The new Smart Packaging Centre (SPC) features a demonstration suite for packaging automation and a dedicated packaging design studio. Following the initial launch of the SPC in 2018, the company has seen demand for its services grow. Antalis Packaging’s Head of Innovation and Design, John Garner, says much of the demand is driven by customers seeking to find solutions to their packaging sustainability and efficiency concerns. The recently opened new SPC has been designed to cater for this growing need. It provides customers with the opportunity to not only discuss their packaging requirements, but to also see packaging automation in action as well as packaging design solutions developed, and samples quickly created on site. The latest developments in packaging automation, including carton and bag on-demand machinery, are showcased in the new demonstration suite. Customers can also have demonstrations of a full range of in the box systems in air cushion and paper technology that wrap, cushion and protect products.
Systems on display, including those from Lantech, Sealed Air, Ranpak and Pregis. Providing customers with the opportunity to see automation in action is a huge benefit, as John explains, “A lot of our focus at the SPC is on helping customers to understand how they can future proof their business. Having the opportunity to see automated packaging machinery working makes it easier for them to understand the features of the different machines and to visualise how it might
integrate with their existing set-up.” The new dedicated design studio offers innovative packaging design as well as artwork design. Once a packaging solution has been developed on screen, samples can be created — and printed — in the demonstration suite. The ability to create fully printed samples is proving very popular with customers. John says, “We have had an injection of fresh thinking from our talented university interns, two of whom are now working full time in the studio. They have really wowed us — and our customers — with their fresh ideas and ability to create packaging solutions.” www.antalis.com
ANOTHER 4,000 TREES PLANTED FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE’S FOREST Premier and their guests once again joined forces with the Woodland Trust to create new native woodland in the Derbyshire countryside as part of the Carbon Capture® programme. Premier teamed up with some of their customers, Sylvamo, Link Publishing, the Outdoor Guide and CBBC presenter Gemma Hunt to brave the cold and plant saplings with the Woodland Trust, at the Young People’s Forest in Mead, Derbyshire. Guests from around the UK, from Southampton to Glasgow, travelled to take part in the day and help with this amazing project. Guests were welcomed with hot breakfasts, teas and coffees; and after introductions from Premier’s Marketing Director, Dave Jones and the Woodland Trust’s Ollie Cannon, promptly took to the fields to begin planting. The target for the day was to plant at least 3,000 trees that are native to the area including holly, silver birch, alder and oak. By the end of the day an incredible total of 4,000 indigenous saplings were planted, despite a few cold hands. Hussein Ismail, Marketing Manager at Premier comments “It was great to finally get together with so many of our customers and suppliers again, to plant trees with the Woodland Trust. It might have been a cold day but everyone was smiling throughout! It was great to meet up with our friends from the Woodland Trust and the Outdoor Guide, as well as meeting Gemma Hunt.” Young People’s Forest Mead is located just south of Heanor and Smalley in the heart of the Derbyshire countryside, the 162 hectare site is steeped in history with ties stretching back to the Norman conquest and the Vikings, over 1,000 years
22
ago. Coal mining began in the area during the 16th century and the land was used as an open cast mining site. In 2015 however, mining ceased and the Woodland Trust plan to plant 250,000 trees, helping to create a safe and educational outdoor space for generations to come; as well as bountiful habitats for endless species of insects, foxes, deer, hare, owls, sky larks and badgers. Hussein continues “The Young People’s Forest Mead is a special place with incredible ambitions. It’s amazing to think that we have played a small part in helping to build their legacy. We’re thankful to everybody who attended, planted trees and helped to create a fantastic day.” Premier’s work with the Woodland Trust began ten years ago. What started off as a simple idea to give a few businesses the choice to mitigate the CO₂ emissions from the materials that they buy has truly blossomed into something very special. Premier’s Carbon Capture® programme has grown to become the industry’s leading environmental initiative with well over 600 customers fully signed up and committed to the cause; from printers to sign makers, local authorities to banks and other
corporate organisations, all directly supporting the creation and maintenance of local native woodland throughout the UK. To date Premier and their customers have raised in excess of £1.3m for the Woodland Trust, planting over 330,000 trees and capturing over 80,000 tonnes of CO₂; and the best part is 100% of all money raised through the Carbon Capture® programme, goes directly to the Woodland trust! Another of Premier’s long standing key partners who helped to plant trees at the Young People’s Forest is The Outdoor Guide (TOG). In the United Kingdom in 2018-19 there were 4.2million children living below the poverty line (the equivalent of nine children in every class of 30). TOG, with the help of CBeebies television presenter Gemma Hunt, has launched a campaign to deliver 10 waterproof suits and wellies to 20,000 schools throughout the UK to help ensure that school children receive the health, educational and social benefits from being able to play and learn outside safely. www.theoutdoorguide.co.uk www.woodlandtrust.org.uk www.paper.co.uk

FIRST PLANT-BASED INK FROM RICOH Brand owners and printer manufacturers can further reduce their environmental impact with Ricoh’s plant-based ink – the first of its kind for mainstream graphics and packaging print. The ink is a derivative of the oil-based ink created for the décor printing sector as part of Ricoh’s collaboration with German equipment manufacturer Olbrich. It has been developed to deliver excellent rub resistance and set off performance for corrugated brown and whiteboards and carton boards. The plant oil component creates a sustainable and environmentally friendly ink that it is: • Quick-drying, as no heat is required to fix or dry the ink. The oil penetrates porous substrates leaving the pigment near the surface. This reduces energy consumption and eliminates the need for the whole drying system.
•
Odour-free with improved food compatibility, as no monomers are used. • Biodegradable and supports de-inking. • Not water-based, so no biocides are required to keep the ink usable. The print heads are easier to clean and less likely to clog as ‘open time’ is much longer. This helps enhance jetting reliability, performance, and printhead life. Low ink consumption is also enabled as the same optical density is achievable using 50% less ink. Graham Kennedy, Director Industrial Printing, Graphic Communications, Ricoh Europe, says: “Brand owners and printer manufacturers are increasingly focused on reducing their environmental impact and applying sustainable practices wherever possible. With our new plantbased ink, they can seamlessly introduce positive
PREMIER SUPPORT FOR YOUNG EXPLORERS UK-based paper and media supplier Premier are launching a new initiative that will help to benefit schools around the UK. Following the recent launch of the Explorer range of papers, Premier has announced that they are running a special campaign on the Explorer brand called “Young Explorers” throughout February, March and April 2022. Companies that order a specific quantity of Explorer paper from Premier throughout the month will be allowed to nominate a local primary school of their choice to receive a set of 10 pairs of wellies and ten sets of waterproofs as part of The Outdoor Guide’s Waterproofs & Wellies Project; the aim of which is to help make outdoor learning available, fun and inclusive for all children, irrespective of their background. Matthew Fisher, Premier’s Sales Director, Office Papers, comments, “Introducing Explorer from the Navigator Company is an exciting development and extends the choice of products from Premier’s office papers portfolio. The launch of the Young Explorers Promotion will also allow us to support the Outdoor Guide Foundation with their waterproof and wellies campaign to provide sets of outdoor clothing to every primary school in the UK and make exploring the outdoors accessible to all.” The World Health Organisation has warned of a looming global mental health crisis resulting from Covid-19, with an estimated 1 in 10 school children having a diagnosable mental health condition. Studies show that spending more time outside can increase concentration, hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, self-awareness and improved sleep, which in turn leads to better behaviour. The Children’s Society says that spending time outdoors and in nature enhances a young person’s short and long-term wellbeing. It is also known to improve mental development and personal fulfilment whilst allowing for activities that can improve teamwork, social interaction and empathy, not to mention reduce stress and anxiety. The Outdoor Guide Foundation is dedicated to many new outdoor enabling initiatives — the first being The Waterproof and Wellies Project for Primary School children, the future generation who need to experience, understand and protect nature. This project aims to see children from all backgrounds getting outside and enjoying the natural wonders around them, enabling them to learn about and enjoy the outdoors; the project is supported by CBeebies television presenter Gemma Hunt. Gemma will join the companies to present the waterproofs and wellies to the nominated schools and their young explorers. For more information about the promotional campaign and how to qualify, contact your local Premier branch or visit www.paper.co.uk. 3D PRINTED MEATBALLS IKEA is inviting people with imagination for a job interview over experimental 3D printed meatballs as part of a new data and technology recruitment campaign. In 2022 the brand will open more than 150 technology and innovation roles across Europe. So it’s reaching out to people who share its values and vision: to create a better everyday life for many people. The world-famous Swedish meatballs are an iconic part of the IKEA offer. Now IKEA is exploring new technologies to make them more sustainable. In line with their commitment to offer 50% plantbased main meals in IKEA restaurants by 2025, IKEA menus already include plant balls as alternatives to traditional meatballs. The ambition is to make healthier and more sustainable eating easy, desirable and affordable. Now IKEA is inviting candidates to bring their ideas and try some experimental plant-based meatballs prepared with a 3D printer. These never before served 3D printed meatballs are being offered as part of its recruitment campaign “Taste the
Future”. The campaign aims to entice a diverse and extraordinary range of tech talent through a unique, tasty and thought-provoking job interview for selected roles and people. The 3D printed meatballs are just one experiment where IKEA is exploring new technologies to bring its vision to life. All to reach more people and create a positive impact on the world. “IKEA is at the start of a journey to embrace data and technology to become more affordable, accessible and sustainable in an omnichannel environment. Naturally, people with imagination will play a big role in that quest. So here we’re looking for people who want to create a better everyday life with us. This campaign is a great way to start the conversation,” says Inter IKEA Group CIO Pascal Pauwels. “We’re looking for down to earth data scientists, future architects, cyber guardians, unboxed engineers and common sense makers. People who want to co-create a better everyday life at home for the many with thin wallets,” says Karen Rivoire, IKEA

DTF: NEW FOR 2022 We are busy getting our heads around the new print phenomenon that is DTF. Our research has, of course, found us back with one of our favourite suppliers who pioneered printing on fabrics back in the 80s. There were some early flops before we discovered “The Magic Touch.” I am sharing a very informative Jim Nicol demonstration on our QPP demonstration suite, found as usual on the front page of our website. Check out the ease of production while witnessing the world’s first officially recognised desktop DTF printer by Mutoh sporting an Epson industrial eightchannel print head covering 60cm wide coated Pet film. The perfect colours are created from water-based CMYK+2 white inks from STS, delivering durable and stretchable transfers. Personalise print on cotton, polyester, canvas, denim, sports and performance fabrics and, as usual, wherever your experiments and customer demands may take you. The best practice is to repeat your logos as many to view using the auto sheet cut; for example, 24 10x10cm badges can be produced in around seven minutes at a unit cost of less than four pence. At this stage, you need a quick bit of shake rattle and roll to apply a coating of the flexible backing DTF powder. Simples. This stage can be undertaken by an optional automatic finishing unit. The next stage is to cure your sticker sheets/transfers for 50 seconds, making them press-ready with the best results at 150º C for 15 seconds. Easy cold peel. Job done. Thanks for the samples go to the TMT team, and thanks to Maureen for the extreme washing test that has proved the longevity of the print process. www.themagictouch.co.uk

NOW YOU CAN 3D PRINT IN COLOUR, WHY SHOULD YOU? By Jordi Drieman, 3D Application Specialist, Mimaki Europe: The productivity and creative benefits of adding 3D printing to almost any model making business are clear, but the cost and complexity of the process can often be a barrier. With the launch of Mimaki’s complete and affordable 3D printing solution - comprising the Mimaki 3DUJ2207, 3D Print prep Pro software and the 3DCS-322 post-processing unit – the end to end 3D printing process is now easier to implement and operate than ever before, making the dream of adding full-colour 3D printing now a reality. However, with so many entrepreneurs, model makers, and creatives happily working with 3D printers that either offer limited or no colour at all, why change this process? We’ve seen this throughout history — when innovations are made more accessible, some find it hard to understand why they need to change the way they are working. The fact is that full colour professional 3D printing can enable a wealth of new groundbreaking revenue opportunities or add significant value to an existing business that currently 3D prints in one colour. With the availability of a cost-effective, complete 3D printing solution, businesses and entrepreneurs should not be asking ‘why’ but ‘when’ can I incorporate incredible, accurate colour and shading to my 3D models, and these are the reasons…
COLOUR: A COMPETITIVE EDGE
For those producing intricate, detailed scale models, figurines, collectables or product prototypes, colour range and accuracy provides a clear differentiator for your business. Whether producing figures from the latest video game, a
design makes it small enough to fit into your office lift and, therefore, install it in your office space or design studio. Creating 3D printed models right there, in the area that you are brainstorming ideas, adjusting iterations, or pitching your designs, provides added efficiency and dynamism to the creative process.
COLOUR CAN BE CRITICAL
prototype for new perfume packaging, or scale models of a client’s yacht, finishing the model with hand-painted colour and detail is time-consuming and expensive. Adding high-quality, full-colour 3D printing streamlines the process it still delivers a high-value model.
COLOUR: UNLEASHING CREATIVITY
More often than not, creatives use colour in their artwork and designs. To be able to 3D print their concepts in the colours they intended not only provides a quick and effective way of conveying a prototype concept to a client, for example but allows designers and artists truly unlimited creativity. Printing on-brand colour prototypes also preserve brand integrity, even from the concept stage. In addition, the Mimaki 3DUJ-2207’s compact
There are 3D applications where colour is crucial to represent what is being printed accurately. With 10 million achievable colours, Mimaki’s technology provides the range of colours needed to reproduce the most complex models accurately. Medical professionals, researchers or educational organisations using 3D printing to deliver anatomical models or even prosthetics that truly match skin tones require exceptional colour fidelity. Such is true for Mimaki customer, Università di Firenze (University of Florence), who chose Mimaki’s technology to print models of the human heart and help students recognise its structure during surgical or anatomical dissection. Of course, while the affordable 3DUJ-2207 can enable businesses to open the full colour, 3D printing door to all the opportunities mentioned above, if/when you are producing high numbers of 3D printed models, the larger print area, and higher speed of the Mimaki 3DUJ-553 should also be considered. This system offers the same extensive colour range for high-quality model making on a production scale. For details of Mimaki’s full 3D product portfolio, including the new 3D Print prep Pro software and 3DCS-322 support material removal system, please visit www.mimakieurope.com.
DYE SUBLIMATION’S DESIGNS ON GROWTH The desirable combination of design creativity and cost-effective production delivered by digital print has captured the imagination of high fashion designers. English fashion designer and couturier Alexander McQueen was an early adopter of dye-sublimation digital printing technology. He used it to explore concepts, develop limited collections and refine designs. Greek-born fashion designer Mary Katrantzou chose the technology to bring her iconic prints to life, and exciting UK fashion designer Richard Quinn has employed it to turn his vibrant imagination into a reality. He has also used other digital print technology to match show sets and even vehicles to his creative vision. His vivid designs have been reproduced on garments, backdrops and taxis to present a captivating and immersive experience.
30
Dye-sublimation print allows greater flexibility for creating designs on a broader range of materials and surfaces than traditional textile production methods. Its desirability is expected to grow significantly as its design flexibility and cost-effectiveness are increasingly recognised. According to global intelligence firm Mordor Intelligence, the global market is predicted to see a CAGR of 10.7% between 2021 and 2026. Its USD 8630.1 million value in 2020 should grow to USD 15310.96 million by 2026. Also driving this anticipated lift is dyesublimation’s growing traction: • Among promotional product printers due to its diverse application on a wide range of products. • With companies adopting this type of printing for banners and ceramic tiles.
•
In household textile, such as curtain manufacturing. Increased demand for printers is expected due to the use of printed fabrics in the home textiles segment. This interest is supported by the ability for the process to yield permanent colour, which is embedded in the substrate or fabric rather than printed on the surface. Also, dye-sublimated fabric does not fade or crack, even after several washes, and images do not chip, peel, or scratch. Another development enabling faster adoption is the production of high speed and high-volume systems as well as enhancements in design, printheads, and other components. For example, new printheads offer faster print speed, along with an automatic circulation system, reducing printhead nozzle clog, which reduces downtime. To learn more about how to meet the increased interest in dye-sublimation applications, visit www.epson.co.uk.

THE JOKE’S ON YOU
READERS’ SCRIBES
SOMETHING TO SHARE? OLD MEMORIES
I went by the house I grew up in and asked if I could go in and look around. They said no and slammed the door in my face! Parents can be real jerks.
WIND FARM
Two windmills are standing in a wind farm. One asks, “What’s your favourite kind of music?” The other says, “I’m a big metal fan.”
SALES COMMUTER
Robyn came home from her first day commuting into the city to her new job selling digital print engines. Noticing that Robyn was looking a little peaked, her partner asked, “Honey, are you feeling all right?” “Not really,” Robyn replied. “I’m nauseous from sitting backward on the train.” “Poor dear,” her partner said. “Why didn’t you ask the person sitting across from you to switch seats for a while?” “I couldn’t,” Robyn replied, “there was no one there.”
WORD PLAY
Irony: Hyphenated. Non-hyphenated.
A REALLY GOOD START TO THE DAY
She was in the kitchen doing the boiled eggs for breakfast. He walks in and she says, “You’ve got to make love to me this very moment!” He says, “What’s going on?” She says, “The egg timer is broken.”
WHAT’S WRONG DOC?
A man walks into the psychiatrist’s office with a zucchini up his nose, a cucumber in his left ear, and a breadstick in his right ear. He says, “Doctor, what is wrong with me?” The psychiatrist replies, “You are not eating properly.”
REVIVED 45
I keep loading paper into my printer, but it keeps saying, “I just can’t get enough.” I think it’s stuck in Depeche Mode.
My memory isn’t what it used to be.
PEDANTIC PROSE
SAD BUT TRUE
PRINT FARMERS JOKE
SHORTS! IN THIS WEATHER?
“How much does it cost to buy a large singing group?” “A choir?” “Okay, fine. How much does it cost to ‘acquire’ a large singing group?”
What kind of printer do pigs use? An oinkjet printer.
FLAT TYRE
A software manager, a hardware manager, and a marketing manager are driving to a meeting when a tyre blows. They get out of the car and look at the problem. The software manager says, “I can’t do anything about this — it’s a hardware problem.” The hardware manager says, “Maybe if we turned the car off and on again, it would fix itself.” The marketing manager says, “Hey, 75% of it is working — let’s ship it!”
LATE FOR WORK AGAIN
“Johnny, why are you late?” asked the print room manager. “Sorry gov, it was late when I left home.” “Then why didn’t you start earlier?” “Sorry, at that point it was too late to start earlier.”
DON’T DO IT (PRE-DVD)
A man was watching TV and enjoying a beer. “Don’t go,” he yelled at the screen. “Do not enter that building. Walk away. Argh, you stupid man!” His wife called from the kitchen, “What on earth are you watching?” “Our wedding video!”
A BALANCE CHECK
I lost my job at the bank on my very first day. A woman asked me to check her balance, so I pushed her over.
SPOT THE DIFFERENCE
What’s the difference between a hippo and a zippo? One is really heavy and the other is a little lighter.
Can anyone remember…
A man walked into a copy shop and requested that they print a book for him with pages 30 feet long and one foot wide. Printer: “Why do you need pages that long?” Man: “Well, it’s a long story.”
I can’t believe I got fired from the calendar factory. All I did was take a day off. My dentist was voted “Dentist Of The Year”. He didn’t get a trophy; they just gave him a little plaque. I’ve just got a job testing hover boards. Money’s rubbish, but it keeps me off the streets. What’s the most regrettable means of communication? Remorse code. Bono and The Edge walk into a bar. The barman says, “Oh no, not U2 again!” What is a web developer’s favourite tea? URL Grey. What do you call a robot that always takes the longest route around? R2Detour. Where are average things manufactured? At a satisfactory. What do you call someone who can’t stick with a diet? A desserter. Will glass coffins be a success? Remains to be seen. Me: “I think I have a crush on Beyoncé...” Her: “Whatever floats your boat.” Me: “No, that’s buoyancy.” I spent £80 on a belt that didn’t fit. My wife said it was a huge waist. I was wondering why the ball was getting bigger. Then it hit me. “I have a split personality,” said Tom, being frank. I Renamed my iPod The Titanic, so when I plug it in, it says “The Titanic is syncing.” Last night, I dreamed I was swimming in an ocean of orange soda. But it was just a Fanta sea. What do you get when you cross a Wurlitzer and a photocopier? A reproductive organ. I heard music coming from my printer. So, I opened it to see what’s wrong. Turns out it was just jamming. My friend claims he can print a gun using his 3D Printer. I’m not impressed. I’ve had a Canon printer for years.
…‘Flipper The Bush Kangaroo?’
No, really, I said that one on porpoise!
