Comment Premier Print Having visited recent print shows and chatted to our readers, print shop owners and suppliers alike, we are pleased to report that QPP are top of the league. It is fair to say that size isn’t everything. It’s not that we just write from the position of print shop owners eager to share best practice with our fellow quick print pros; it is also about what we vet out as some press releases are not a good fit for front line printers. What interests you interests us so please get involved and join the growing list of contributors and referral blowers. I have had extra help with this issue as production fell across half term so a BIG THANKYOU to Granddaughters Nyree and Nelia. Half term, don’t you just love it! Route 1 Print launches Same-Day Dispatch Following heavy investment in technology over the past year, South Yorkshire-based trade printer, Route 1 Print, has introduced ‘Same-Day Dispatch’ on their most popular print runs to cut turnaround times for their clients. Same day dispatch is now available on popular runs of flyers, business cards and roller banners. “We understand that our clients are often under pressure from their customers for quick delivery”, says Jack Wilmott, Brand Manager for Route 1 Print. “Same-Day Dispatch will help our clients that are working to tight deadlines. Consumers are expecting shorter lead times across the board and now, our clients can cater further to this demand”. A number of investments over the past few months have been instrumental in achieving even faster turnarounds, including the installation of an HP Indigo 10,000 and Horizon Smartstacker. This notably, was a global first, allowing seamless inline finishing significantly reducing factory throughput times. The Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 printer also converted their B1 Format Heidelberg SX102 to use LE UV inks, as well adding a Cutstar roll feed to eliminate drying time and allow work to progress straight from press to guillotining, folding and binding. Undertaking a complete factory re-organisation last August allowed the trade printer to establish lean flow product streams. This vastly improved throughput times and maximised efficiency of the factory which is headed up by Operations Director, Jim Swain. “We have invested in all aspects of our operation to ensure we can consistently deliver strong performance for our customers, applying world-class principles and the latest technologies to deliver short lead-times with confidence while maintaining very competitive pricing.” Businesses are moving faster than ever before and marketing teams are under pressure to deliver print campaigns with little notice. “We can now help our clients move at the same pace as the industry and harness the print spend of buyers requiring short
turnarounds” explains Mr Wilmott. Print resellers can now expand their offering and sell to customers who need print fast. The launch comes as Route 1 Print continues to build their arsenal of reseller tools which enable their clients to grow their business. Their recent eBook, Print Customers and How to Find Them, analyses the spending habits of the biggest print buying industries, while their industry-specific marketing toolkits enable resellers to target these businesses with tailored product examples. The introduction of same-day dispatch ultimately aligns with the wholesale printer’s mission to support resellers and make their lives easier. www.route1print.co.uk
The Printing Charity new website design brief The Printing Charity has handed the design brief for its new website to the first intake of cadets at Nettl’s recently opened Birmingham Academy for design graduates. The nine cadets are working on the charity’s design brief as part of their on-the-job coaching and real world training at the Nettl Academy to help them launch their careers in the creative industry. The final stage of the project will see the cadets pitching their individual design mock-ups to The Printing Charity, which will invite one cadet to design and build their new website. The cadet will also receive a £1,500 Print Futures Award. Neil Lovell, The Printing Charity’s Chief Executive, says: “We’re delighted to have Nettl’s support for this project, which it has kindly undertaken on a pro bono basis. The partnership reflects our ethos of helping young people where possible to gain practical work experience that will lead to employment. We’re looking forward to seeing how the cadets interpret our design brief for simplicity. “We’re also encouraging all the cadets working on this project to apply for this year’s Print Futures Awards. These grants of £1,500 help people aged 18 to 30 years pay for relevant graphic arts, printing, publishing and packaging qualifications or courses to develop their workplace skills. Application forms are at https://www.theprintingcharity.org.uk/printfutures-awards-2017/ and entries close 30 April.” Chris Lowe, Regional Director of Nettl, says: “I believe the opportunity presented to the Nettl cadets by The Printing Charity is vital to progress their learning and development. Most students don’t get the opportunity to work on live briefs for clients, let alone a live project that will actually go on to be used by The Printing Charity.
“All of the cadets have really thrown themselves into the project and have enjoyed working on delivering the aspects of telling The Printing Charity’s story via the website. “Nettl Academy is aimed at helping graduates get a leg-up into the industry. Each year thousands of design students leave University trying to land just a few hundred jobs that are available each year. I believe teaming up with The Printing Charity is a great way of helping them to find their feet in this incredibly competitive job market.” www.theprintingcharity.org.uk www.nettl.com

12 incredible print effects using the Vivid Matrix Vivid introduced its best-selling Matrix Laminating Systems with pneumatic pressure for the first time at IPEX 2014. The original design brief was to allow the Matrix to laminate digital print using litho lamination film, by utilising the extra pressure achieved through the upgraded pneumatics.
In 2015 the re-engineered Matrix rollers
included variable pressure, allowing new foiling and spot UV-style effects to be achieved. “The Matrix was traditionally a laminating machine,” said David Smith, Vivid’s marketing communications manager. “But we can now market the Matrix as a multifunctional Digital Foiling and Laminating System.” Such has been the appetite for foiling on the Matrix, the original video produced by Vivid has had over 30,000 views on its YouTube channel since it was published. “As we continued to enhance the Matrix and introduce even more colours of foil and lamination finishes, the original video soon became out dated,” continued David. “So we decided to write and film a completely new video, which didn’t really focus on the Matrix
itself or act as a ‘how-to’ guide, but more to show just some of the finishing effects you can now achieve for yourself”. The brief was to show some of the most popular print finishes that were preferred by visitors at last year’s drupa. The video also needed to be under three minutes long and show not just foiling, but also lamination, spot UV-style print effects and over printable foil. “We’re really pleased with the finished video, which features our new Aqua Aura premium brand of foils,” summarised David. “Hopefully the video will give viewers a little inspiration of just some of the incredible effects the Matrix can achieve in-house themselves, without any setup charges or expensive foil dyes required.” www.vivid-online.com

OKI Smart New Suite Shows Smart Solutions OKI Systems has announced the official opening of its ‘solutions suite’ within the OKI Business and Media Centre at Derbyshire County Cricket Club. The room will be available to OKI partners to show customers and prospects how OKI’s smart solutions and applications work in real-life. Says Andrew Hall, marketing manager, OKI Systems UK: “OKI’s smart printers and multifunction printers are now often part of a wider workflow which includes third party software such as document management. Using this dedicated room means our channel partners can demonstrate to customers just how this can work for them. It’s quite a step change in concepts from the standalone printer, so it will be extremely advantageous to have a working set-up which will show clearly the benefits.” OKI gave its name to the new £2 million four-storey media centre as part of a major sponsorship deal, announced last year. The centre was the culmination of the re-development of the club which began with the 3aaa pavilion and the Elite Performance Centre in 2015. The upgrade was part of plan to attract high profile players, larger crowds and more media coverage for the club. The club’s ground and new media centre will be in the spotlight this
summer when it hosts the opening game, England vs India, plus eight other matches in the ICC Women’s World Cup www.oki.co.uk
Bookletmaking at Bishop Grosseteste University The Reprographics Department at Lincolnbased Bishop Grosseteste University has announced details of an investment in postpress equipment consisting of a Morgana BM350 bookletmaker and Morgana DigiFold Pro creasing and folding system. Commenting on the purchase decision, Alan Stacey, Reprographics Manager at Bishop Grosseteste University, said: “We have been producing an increasing amount of booklet work for our University and the cost of placing this work with outside sources was steadily increasing to the point where it made sense for us to look at purchasing equipment in order to bring the work inhouse. We looked at a number of suppliers, but Morgana was the one that ticked all of the boxes. “The BM350 is a proper commercial printers bookletmaking system. The air-fed system provides for fast and efficient feeding of printed pages into the binder, and the square-back option gives that high-quality look to our publications. It also makes them a lot easier to stack!” Features such as the manual feed allow for very short run booklets – one or two copies – to be produced without any set-up, although Alan is also very impressed with the software side of the system: “The software is easy to use with on-screen prompts to aid very fast and efficient job set-up.” BM350 is capable of producing stitched booklets of up to 140 pages. The patented folding mechanism employed provides a sharp and professional finish. It can work with standard A4, A3, B4, SRA4, and SRA3 paper sizes, as well as custom sizes.
With regard to the DigiFold Pro, Alan adds: “When it comes to creasing and folding work the DigiFold is a powerhouse – it copes with a wide range of stocks and is also very easy to set-up and to use.” The department also uses the unit for perforating tasks. Morgana DigiFold Pro employs a unique creasing rule and matrix, the DynaCrease, that eliminates tearing and, therefore, cracking on a digitally printed sheet. By using this patented technology DigiFold Pro is able to crease and fold over 6,000 A4 sheets an hour. This excellent throughput speed is achieved by creasing the sheet without stopping it, yet maintaining an accuracy of +/‐ 0.1mm. Controlled by the same innovative seven-
inch SmartScreen panel as the rest of the Morgana Pro range, DigiFold Pro is instructed how long the sheet is and which crease and fold to produce. All settings and adjustments are made using the SmartScreen and, as only symbols are used, operation couldn’t be simpler. In addition to providing a full range of print services to the University the Reprographics team also provide internal service and support 48 colour copiers and printers across the site. “Copiers and printers are of great value to our customers for very short runs, but for anything larger we are on hand to provide a fast and efficient printing service,” said Alan Stacey. www.morgana.co.uk

New Xerox Versant Presses boost growth How can commercial printers and in-plant shops fuel new levels of automation and business growth? Higher image quality, greater media latitude and advanced inline finishing capabilities – the calling cards of the new Xerox Versant® 180, Versant 180 Performance Package and Versant 3100 Presses. “The Versant’s productivity, automation and inline finishing modules have already established the presses as workhorse fixtures in thousands of print-for-pay shops and in-plant settings globally,” said Ragni Mehta, vice president and general manager, Cut Sheet Business, Xerox. “The new Versant family adds enhanced automation features to maximise uptime, reduce waste, deliver faster turnaround times and expand application opportunities.” The Versant line gives printers greater capacity, output and inline automation tools such as a spectrophotometer, full-bleed booklet maker, punch, square fold trimmer and other advanced finishing tools for just about any application needed. The presses handle everything from trimmed and finished marketing collaterals, direct mail, signage, reports or full-bleed magazines on a range of media types and sizes from envelopes to 26-inch banner prints. “In-plant printers need speed with robust duty cycles and technology to manage alignment and calibration. The new Xerox Versant presses provide the benefits of advanced automation and productivity to meet those needs,” said Pat McGrew, director, Keypoint Intelligence. “The presses’ Simple Image Quality Adjustment feature requires an internal target to be printed and scanned back, ensuring that adjustments are fast and straightforward, which embodies the best practice we recommend. This process provides an extremely accurate registration that printers will appreciate.” The new Versant family of presses offer: More performance — With increased duty cycles and the ability to print from 80 to 100 pages per minute, the presses can print on stocks up to 350 gsm. Integrated
technology such as Registration Alignment and Production Accurate Registration ensure image-to-media alignment and density uniformity; more feeding and finishing options — Advanced feeding capabilities allow for longer, uninterrupted print runs with inline finishing options including the Xerox Inserter, Xerox Basic Punch, the Xerox SquareFold Trimmer and the Xerox Two-Sided Trimmer; and High image quality — Ultra HD Resolution and 10-bit technology provides four times more pixels on a page than other presses. Built-in Xerox Confident Colour technology utilising a Full Width Array combine to deliver optimum image quality. The Versant 180 Performance Package offers Xerox’s Automated Colour Quality Suite with an inline spectrophotometer to provide fully automated colour management. www.xerox.com
OKI New Teriostar OKI wide format printers OKI Europe Ltd has launched two new wide format Teriostar multifunction printers designed to boost productivity in busy print centres where deadlines are tight and time is money. The LP-1040MF and the LP-2060MF print at super speeds; up to 7 A1 size prints per minute and up to 9 A1 size prints per minute, the fastest in their class. Scan speeds of 240 mm per second and parallel processing of tasks also help accelerate workflow and both models feature the industry’s only user-replaceable process cartridges which means projects won’t get derailed by downtime. New features make these printers simple and intuitive to use. For example, all controls are managed at the front by a clear 8.5” colour touch screen panel which gives rapid access to frequently used menus with the improvement of the user interface. Exceptional print quality is assured with a new Print Data Converter which fixes typical problems such as speckles, slants or the kind of errors sometimes seen with scan data or file converter data. “With the new LP-1040MF and the LP-2060MF, we’ve retained the best of the legacy Teriostar features such as the unique photoconductor drum which is actually a cartridge that can be replaced by the user. As this is the part mainly involved when there are print defects, this can save significant time and expense for example waiting for an engineer and a replacement. To this we have added a host of new features, updating these models and creating fast, efficient and intuitive multifunction devices,” says Frank Jaenschke, General Manager Marketing, Wide Format Printers, OKI Europe Ltd. Enhanced Teriostation2 integrated software is standard on both. This
delivers complete network access to the copier and enables users to send jobs including multiple files to the printer from anywhere on the network using most common file formats TIFF, PDF and more. New security features include identification with smart card for print, copy and scan. This prevents unauthorised use, the risk of leaving sensitive drawings uncollected, eliminates waste and controls job logs. These new models also enable the complete deletion of data on the hard disk drive (HDD) if the printer is sold or, if leased, or returned to owner. www.oki.co.uk

Spandex launch seven new textiles Spandex, the supplier of innovative solutions to the print, sign, graphics and display industries, is adding seven new textile substrates specifically designed for latex, solvent and UV printers to its ImagePerfect range of materials. These new substrates complement the existing ImagePerfect portfolio, offering sign makers and graphics producers a choice of 21 textile materials compatible with existing latex, solvent or UV printers. Leon Watson, Spandex UK General Manager comments: “Our new textiles offer Spandex customers enormous potential, enabling them to deliver highly profitable and visually stunning soft signage and décor applications simply using the print devices they already have in their shops.” Watson continues: “The market is witnessing huge growth in textile applications, either for use in interior décor and soft signage, or as an alternative to PVC vinyl or even rigid materials. The reasons for this growth are aesthetic and economic: designers and architects are moving away from PVC and looking for materials that deliver a softer, sleeker look and feel. Textiles also deliver cost benefits compared with conventional materials, being reusable and lighter to transport. This is particularly significant for the exhibitions and events market. Stands were previously built predominantly using rigid materials, but many stand designers are moving to light textile systems that are cheaper to transport, require less resource to build and are completely reusable.” The new ImagePerfect materials from Spandex now allow printers to take advantage of this lucrative growth opportunity, without the need to invest in a dedicated textile printer, which has previously been an understandable barrier. The seven new ImagePerfect products are: ImagePerfect 2325 Display Premium, suitable for indoor and outdoor applications. The product can be used for a host of applications including light boxes, banners, displays, parasols, tents, inflatables and interior décor. ImagePerfect 2326 Display Grey Back is a curl-free blockout material, making it ideal for roll-up applications as well as display frame systems, backdrops and banners. ImagePerfect 2327 Backlit is a fine woven fabric with a special light
diffusion back coating for light boxes. It can also be used for other applications such as inflatables, shower curtains and banners. ImagePerfect 2328 Display Satin offers the user a choice of two printable sides, one matt and the other satin. With its soft feel, it can be used for display frame systems, pop-up display systems, table cloths and banners. ImagePerfect 2330 Canvas Banner is optimised for use for canvas frames, art reproduction, roll-up display systems, wall coverings and banners. ImagePerfect 2329 Display offers lay-flat hanging, making it perfect for display frames, pop-up systems, soft furnishings, banners and interior décor. ImagePerfect 2331 Banner Grey Back is designed for indoor and outdoor use and is also 100% recyclable. It can be used for wall coverings, curtains, banners and other interior décor applications. The new ImagePerfect textiles range offer fray-free performance and are suitable for cold knife cutting and sold up to 3.2m in width. A number of the textiles also offer crease free or crease resistant properties and are fire rated. www.spandex.com or call 0800 77 26 33.

Papergraphics presents digital interiors If you were looking for something new and a little different at this year’s Sign & Digital UK you needed to look no further than the Papergraphics stand. Supplying the UK’s most innovative wide-format media for digital print, the company debuted its exciting Décortex personalised roller-blinds — a first of its kind product — as well as unveiling its brand-new mobile demonstration vehicle. 21st century window decoration - Décortex is manufactured exclusively for Papergraphics and designed for those looking to capitalise on the growing demand for personalised interiors. Complementing its Digimura wallcoverings, the range of highly specified roller-blind fabrics enable businesses to produce blinds with bespoke designs, images or branding using latex, UV or eco-solvent ink wide-format printers. John Selby, CEO of Papergraphics, commented: “We have spent time researching the roller-blind market and understanding the demand for personalised products in the commercial and home sectors. The opportunities are vast — offices, hotels and restaurants — you can picture so many where personalised or branded roller-blinds could work. It is the perfect partner for those offering Digimura products and we truly believe we have created a product that will be the next big thing in digital interiors.” To deliver exceptional image quality, Papergraphics has partnered with a textile weaver to ensure the roller-blinds achieve the highest standards required. The fabric is available in two options: Décortex 1.1 — a onesided option — or the blackout Décortex 2.2, which can be printed on both sides. Décortex also features a unique bi-directional weave that help the blinds stay flat regardless of print direction and is BS5867 Part 2 (curtains,
drapes and window blinds) fire-rated for commercial use and public spaces, even when printed — no other digitally-printed roller-blind meets this safety standard. The product will be available from 3 April 2017 and during Sign & Digital UK Papergraphics delivered live demonstrations of Décortex roller-blinds on the HP stand. Papergraphics on tour - Alongside its new roller-blinds, Papergraphics unveiled the latest addition to its family — a new mobile demonstration vehicle that will begin continuously touring the country following Sign & Digital UK. Forming the company’s stand at the show, the bespoke vehicle was manufactured specifically for Papergraphics. It can be kitted out with a range of wide-format hardware and media, and at the show visitors saw an HP Latex 570 and CWT application table. The high-spec vehicle complements a huge office refurbishment project that will put Papergraphics in a unique position to
provide application demonstrations across the country. Esko solves Large Format Production bottlenecks at FESPA
In today’s highly competitive environment, sign providers should be looking beyond their production equipment to find an automated end-to-end workflow that ensures faster time to market, fewer errors and improved profitability. If they recognise that waste is created everywhere; via complex manual steps, equipment idle time, incorrect material handling or lack of workflow control and if they seek to eliminate idle time—in design creation, pre-press, on press and on the finishing table, they should visit Esko at FESPA 2017. During FESPA 2017 in Hamburg Esko will feature software and hardware solutions that help companies get the most out of their production workflows, their equipment, and their staff. www.esko.com

PIXEL PROPHET
CONTROL AT YOUR FINGERTIPS Martin Christie always visit the annual Photography Show at the NEC with the best intention of not buying anything and usual fail, but just as I thought I was going to keep my resolve this year, something caught my eye.
[I]
never go looking to buy big things, like cameras and lenses, because they are better considered carefully at leisure, rather than snapped up on impulse. It’s the little things you find that you might not actually be looking for that take your fancy. It’s called serendipity — something nice discovered unexpectedly. Photographers, like many enthusiasts, are probably naturally attracted to gadgets, and tend to surround themselves with what will come in handy one day — the ‘that’ll-be-useful-even if-Idon’t-need-it’ syndrome. I’ve already recently upgraded my camera, lenses and main computer so that part of the equation was already in place. What I have been exploring is methods of speeding up workflow. It is one of those ironies of technical progress that as you improve the performance of your equipment, you tend to take on more tasks because you can. Thus the actual workload increases rather than decreases. Because you can shoot bigger and better pictures, you tend to shoot more of them. Even without extra quantity, the demands on processing power, memory and storage, are in no way diminished by the escalation of technology, rather the opposite. Not just an issue for my own personal workflow, it’s a factor that is increasingly making a demand on time at the print shop counter. Rather than speeding up the customer transaction, the continual flow of electronic information and exchange often slows it down. Conflicting instructions, confusion and contra corrections lead to delays and wastage, as with print on demand we have to translate that fog into hard copy. In the digital world mistakes are easily deleted, but in the real one, they have to go into a proper recycle bin, not an imaginary one. As often repeated in these columns, the problem is largely because the nature of the customer base has changed. It has had a technology imposed upon it which it can use but barely understands. I say imposed because it seems almost impossible for anyone to survive without the bleating of text messages, tweets,
and other forms of instant gratification. Often customers in the shop are barely listening — distracted by some vital piece of gossip, or another cute kitten. Not surprising that their order comes out wrong when they can’t concentrate on anything for longer than the flicker of an eye, or separate the important from the trivia. Apparently, according to someone on the BBC and therefore an impeccable source (take note D.J.Trump) the average person’s attention span has now fallen from eleven seconds to just eight, and is therefore officially less than that of a goldfish. This does not come as much of a surprise to me, though it may be of some satisfaction to a goldfish. The end result of this irrelevant input overload is often that we spend more time getting less done, rather than what we originally thought — that all this lovely technology would free us from chores and that our main concern would be how
to spend our increasing leisure time. Whatever happened to that version of Utopia? Far from giving us individual freedom, the electronic age has made many people its slave. We can’t be Luddite and reject all the modern inventions, but we do need to embrace them and use them properly to our advantage, not make them an excuse when things go wrong because the control should be in our own hands, not in the internal workings of a microprocessor. That said, I can’t claim that my purchase of a Contour Shuttle Pro was based on any deep philosophical position, but at least the conviction that it would save me time — eventually. That last disclaimer is allowing for the inevitable learning curve any new device demands. We get so used to a particular task, like using a computer mouse to control our actions, it’s sometimes useful to stop and wonder if there is perhaps a better way. On my photography side, I shoot a lot of digital images, often several hundred at a session, a

quantity that could barely be contemplated in the media constrained days of film. And with a lot of images, goes a lot of editing. Being brought up through the naturally conservative discipline of film, I try to get most of the job done in camera. But as with darkroom days, there is always fine tuning to be done before the final output is considered perfect, or at the very least acceptable. Also, I shoot in RAW rather than the conventional JPEG, which is an image processed by the camera or phone. The RAW file is the simple, uncompressed digital information I have dictated by the manual settings I have selected at capture. It allows me, with a 24mp DSLR to output extremely high-resolution files in TIFF or other stable format, with 16-bit colour depth (compared to a JPEG’s 8 bit) and means that, if needed, large print files or good quality magazine images can be reproduced. Most of the captured images are not required for print output of course, but it’s good to be able to archive content that could be, and even saving original images for web use means that working from a quality original ensures the best possible result. The size and resolution of images now able to be transferred and viewed via the internet has moved on so much from the days of squealing modems and intermittent connections. Then anything bigger than a postage stamp would be lost in the clouds for ever. RAW files, by their very nature, tend to look a little flat when opened on the computer which is where the fine tuning comes in. There are several dedicated programmes for handling RAW files. Most manufacturers provide their own, but the options of choice tend to be Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom. The difference is that in Photoshop the files are opened individually in a separate dialogue box, and in Lightroom, they can be batch processed. Either way, there are an almost infinite of subtle adjustments that can be made because you are working on the very internal electronic organs rather than painting over the skin as you are effectively doing using JPEG. In the extreme, RAW file editing can do a lot to recover or restore images that would otherwise be lost, but it’s the more precise tuning of colour hue, shadows and highlights, etcetera — that makes the difference in making a good image perfect. The basic mouse is quite a crude instrument for these tasks in that it is difficult to make tiny adjustments, working with sliders on levels for example, and that a lot of time is spent on repetitive actions going from toolbox to functions, then back to layers and so on. If you are working on just one file not so much of a problem, but with a lot of similar photos many actions may be repeated or minutely tweaked. Apart from the tedium,
vivid-online.com
repetitive strain injury in the wrist is a real concern as a computer mouse does not fully extend the dexterity of the human hand. I did look at the excellent Wacom tablet and a few of its quality competitors, and that has certain advantages, especially for anyone using Photoshop for Illustration. The pen tool does more than draw and has pressure sensitive options and buttons for actions that do exploit the potential of fuller finger control. It’s very good for touching up stray artefacts, and unwanted pixels, and I may well go for a tablet next time the piggy bank has a healthy rattle. In the meantime, the Shuttle has been the way to go. It doesn’t completely replace a mouse and can be run in conjunction with one, but it relieves it of most of its tasks and gives the user much more finger control over workflow. It’s roughly the size and shape of a hand, and its buttons are spread like so many fingertips, rather than crammed into a little claw-shaped thing. There are fifteen individual buttons in total, two rows of nine in total at the top, two either side and four at the bottom. Each can be individually programmed for a particular action in a particular programme or can utilise factory presets already installed that cover over a hundred common applications. Those options alone would make it a useful compare to manually dragging the pointer of a mouse around the corners of a monitor screen. The bonus ball is actually a central shuttle wheel, which gives it its title, containing a central dial that rotates through 360º and has three fingershaped recesses for ease of control. This shuttle and dial can be used to scroll through images, including web browsing, or in particular programs make tiny incremental adjustments to any chosen action. It’s like having the precision of a surgeon’s scalpel rather than working with a spoon. No more skid marks on the mousemat or frustrating juggling with toggles. The actual sensitivity of the shuttle can be adjusted so that if you are editing a video, for example, you can click forward every frame, or if adjusting exposure in Lightroom, the tiniest fraction of a stop. For the moment I am still using the standard presets but will start to insert my own preferences when I am confident which ones I want to save and where I want them. But the surgical control the Shuttle allows is already fine tuning my images as well as saving wear and tear on my shirt cuffs. In whatever program there are always several standard actions we use all the time, whether it is saving, resizing or fitting to page for example. These can be saved in actions as keyboard shortcuts, or you could memorise all the many ones available as standard on the keys, but the combinations can often be confusing, and there are certainly a number of keys on my board I have never even pressed. Others I hit all the time, but often still have to look down to remember where they are. The Shuttle allows me to get all my favourites together in the reach of a palm, saving time and avoiding error, as well as additionally enabling the important fine tuning of digital imaging. I haven’t used it in conjunction with In Design yet, but I’m equally sure it would speed up the laborious layouts needed for flyers and business cards, and there are probably a lot of other things it will be useful for. I will pass on any tips as I discover them in the future, but so far definitely an impulse purchase I won’t be regretting. Visit: www.contourdesign.com/UK/ I ran out of space this month to say more about the Microdot mini digital microscope as it deserves more than a few lines, so if you were waiting for a review, sorry you’ll have to wait until next month.

The Premier Paper Group held the latest of its successful tree planting action days in conjunction with the Woodland Trust, with some 1,000 new sapling trees planted by customers and staff at the Pullabrook Wood in the Bovey Valley National Nature Reserve. Braving torrential rain and wintery conditions, members of Premier’s staff, together with some 20 customers, helped to plant around 1,000 saplings at Pullabrook Wood, helping to regrow and reflourish a forest area which had suffered an outbreak of the tree disease spread by Japanese Larch, a non-native tree species that was introduced to the woodland shortly after the Second World War. This plant disease is sadly becoming an increasing problem for woodland owners as it gradually spreads and infects larch trees. It is a fungus-like disease which spreads and causes extensive damage to trees and other plants, but is particularly dominant where stands of larch are growing in timber plantations. Since 2009, when it was discovered infecting and killing large numbers of Japanese larch trees in South West England, the Forestry Commission has developed a surveillance programme to monitor the spread of the infection. The disease is regularly referred to by its scientific name Phytophthora ramorum and was diagnosed at Pullabrook Woods by the Forestry Commission’s Plant Health Team earlier last year. To reduce the chances of continuing infection, the larch stands had to be clear felled at the site prior to this recent event, and so following this, the area was prepared and cleared in preparation for the tree planting day by Premier staff and students from Exeter College. The 1,000 new saplings that were planted comprised of a variety of native woodland species, including Oak, Birch, Blackthorn, and Wild Cherry.
Potts Print help clients reduce the carbon impacts of their printed communications Potts Print has again balanced (offset) their annual carbon emissions. With their emissions measured, and 3rd party verified, Potts balance their own operational impacts with the World Land Trust by preserving 82,000 square metres of high conservation value land. This activity not only removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere but protects endangered species. Through this commitment, and by using Carbon Balanced Paper for their clients work, Potts directly help their customers reduce the carbon impacts of their printed communications.
May 2017
During the past year, more than 65,000 trees have been planted by Premier’s customers, all of whom have participated and engaged in Premier’s Carbon Capture scheme, which has helped to capture some 11,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, a unique environmental achievement. Commenting on this latest tree planting day of action, Premier Paper Group, Marketing Executive, Brad Goldsmith, stated, “There is an immense sense of achievement in braving the elements, to plant a significant number of trees that will help regenerate this beautiful woodland. This is a great example of how customers, who engage in our Carbon Capture programme make a real difference in creating habitats that are vital to both wildlife and people.” Pullabrook Woods: This National Nature Reserve comprises of three adjacent sites: Yarner Woods, Trendlebere Down and the Bovey Valley Woodlands. The main habitats present are ancient woodland and heathland. The woodland is dominated by Oak, though other species are present including alder and willow in the wetter areas. Characteristic flowers of the woodland floor cow-wheat, bilberry and, where the soils are wetter, royal fern. Lichen and mosses are abundant. Breeding birds are typical of western oakwoods, and include Pied Flycatcher and Redstart. Dormice breed at the site, and there is a rich invertebrate fauna, including the high brown fritillary butterfly. Trendlebere Down provides a glorious expanse of heathlands and valley mire habitat, typical of the Dartmoor fringe. The Woodland Trust has been planting trees and standing up for woodland for over 40 years. They’ve planted over 36 million trees, saved 532 woods, and have 22,586 hectares of ancient woodland under restoration. The Woodland Trust look after 1000 woods which are open for the public to enjoy free of charge. Every year they create over 1,500 hectares of new native woodland, much with the help of schools and communities to create urban green spaces. In 2014 Premier launched Woodland Trust Office Paper. The carbon generated from the production and distribution of each ream of paper is captured by planting trees in the UK through the Woodland Trust’s Woodland Carbon scheme. In total, Premier’s partnership with the Woodland Trust has raised over £500,000 for the Woodland Trust since 2011. www.paper.co.uk Examples in the last 12 months include; Doodle Education, who reduced their carbon impact by 67 tonnes, preserving 5,600 square metres of land and, Newcastle Theatre Royal Trust reducing theirs by 34 tonnes of CO2, preserving 2,900 square metres. Potts present their customers with certificates, from the World Land Trust, confirming the environmental benefit this activity delivers. Jo Kirby, Director of Marketing and Sales for Newcastle Theatre Royal Trust said, “Using Potts Print – a Carbon Balanced Printing Company - is a simple solution which has helped us offset the carbon impacts of our printing requirements.” For more information on Potts Print and their wider “Green Print” commitment visit www.potts.co.uk/greenprint
Carbon Balanced Paper
Carbon Balanced is a simple way for brands to reduce the carbon impacts of their printed communications and, using the highly recognisable World Land Trust logo, convey their Corporate Responsibility. Balancing is delivered by World Land Trust, an international conservation charity, who offset carbon emissions through the purchase and preservation of high conservation value land. Sir David Attenborough is a key patron of the trust. The total amount of CO2 Balanced and land area preserved is quantified in a unique certificate, which an organisation can use in its environmental reporting and marketing. Mimaki Textiles at Texprocess and Techtextil 2017
Mimaki has announced it is to have a strong presence at Texprocess and its parallel show, Techtextil 2017 that will highlight the company’s wideformat digital textile printers and innovative ink and dye sublimation technologies in two separate exhibition halls. Texprocess serves the international garment-manufacturing and textile processing industry while Techtextil brings together technical textiles and non wovens showing the full range of potential uses of textile technologies. Both international trade fairs will take place from 9th to 12th May, 2017 in Frankfurt. “The parallel Texprocess and Techtextil 2017 events provide Mimaki the advantage to demonstrate our textile inkjet print technologies and educate a wide audience on the value that Mimaki brings to the fast-growing textile markets,” says Uwe Niklas, General Manager Marketing & Sales of Mimaki Deutschland. “Both events offer valuable, integrated components to connect with a variety of businesses involved with textile and apparel production at an international level.”
During the Texprocess trade fair, the Digital Textile Micro Factory will present a live demonstration of an integrated production chain for apparel in hall 6.0, stand B57. In collaboration with the German Institutes for Textile and Fibre Research in Denkendorf and a number of well-known companies in the textile sector, the micro-factory will demonstrate the entire networked production of clothing items – from the design stage to digital printing, automatic cutting out and fabrication with a focus on sports apparel. Mimaki will show its TS300P-1800 with sublimation inks and the Tx300P-1800 printer with pigment inks during the large-format inkjet printing step of the micro-factory, involving sublimation printing on polyester and pigment printing on cotton and mixed fibres. Both developed for the textile print industry, the revolutionary TS300P-1800 wide format, high-speed dye sublimation textile printer delivers cost-effective printing while maintaining high quality and productivity and is designed to print onto the thinnest of transfer paper. The Tx300P-1800 direct to textile inkjet printer delivers high-quality printing on a wide range of fabrics and is ideally suited for applications such as fashion, furnishing, soft signage and exhibitions. Michael Wartmann, Product Manager Textile of Mimaki Deutschland, will present “Various Textile Ink Technologies for Interior Design” on May 9th, 2:55pm in hall 6.0. The presentation will be followed by Wartmann’s participation in the panel discussion: “Drivers for future growth of digital textile printing in technical textile applications?” at 4:25pm. At Techtextil, Mimaki will also demonstrate its Tx300P-1800 with sublimation ink in hall 3 stand D05, together with its authorised dealer Multi-Plot Europe. www.hybridservices.co.uk
Sometimes a letter says it all It’s been a while since there has been such an important, infamous, famous and talked about letter as the one penned by Theresa May and hand delivered to Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, by Britain’s top man in Brussels, Sir Tim Barrow, on the 29th March 2017. Yes, you’ve guessed it. We’re referring to that letter! Six pages signaling Britain’s intention to leave the European Union and trigger Article 50. CHOOSING YOUR DELIVERY METHOD Now the politics of this is a deeply personal thing. But have you considered the effectiveness of this humble and simple means of communication, how it was delivered and how it was shared with what can only be assumed were the eagerly waiting 27 Heads of the EU Member States. Maybe our PM chose a letter because delivery was more certain than email, just imagine the problems that spam filters or clutter could have caused to our exit strategy. Did Theresa agonise over DL, A5 or A4? Was it a windowless or hand written envelope? Perhaps we will never know. Firstly, let’s look at how it got to its original destination. Did you know that Sir Tim’s route to hand deliver the letter was a closely guarded secret to avoid attempts at interception? This does seem elaborate — surely it would have been cheaper to pop it into the Downing Street mailroom, frank it and simply trust to the mail. Secondly, how did it reach those 27 Heads of State and other EU functionaries and politicians? Presumably it was scanned and emailed such were the time constraints involved. Seems logical.
EFFECTIVE DIRECT MAIL So what the above tells us is that the letter, and especially direct mail (DM), is nowhere near dead! If you choose your message carefully, select a well targeted audience, prepare your message and its design, then DM can be very, very effective. And that’s not just anecdotal. Research shows that DM campaigns and their effectiveness are on the increase…. A bit like vinyl! Take a look at the Neopost Guide to Direct Mail to see how your business can benefit. SECURE EMAILS Lastly why not combine and back up your DM campaign with well targeted emails. You can guarantee that the scanned and emailed Brexit letter soon found its way around Europe and the globe. Was this done securely? It would be nice to think that a document of such importance was given its due respect and that at some stage an Output Management solution like Neopost’s OMS-500 was utilised to automate, track and manage its delivery in whatever format was required to the intended recipients. All good food for thought. READERS’ SCRIBES
SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Those Smart Pills Work
Feeling listless, I bought some expensive “brain-stimulating” pills at the health food store. But it wasn’t until I got home that I read the label. “This is just rosemary extract,” I complained to my husband. “I can’t believe I spent all that money for something that I have growing wild in the garden!” “See?” he said. “You’re smarter already.”
Hypothetical Hollywood
My wife and I were having a very hypothetical discussion... In the unlikely event that Hollywood made a movie based on our lives, we wondered what stars would play us. “Who would you pick to portray you?” she asked me. I thought about it for a minute, then answered, “George Clooney.” “In that case,” she said, “I’ll play myself.”
Sailing vs. Shopping
After we had lunch with another couple, the girls went shopping, and the guys opted to go sailing. Bad decision as a storm blew in while us guys were out on the water. Making matters worse, the tide had gone out, grounding the boat. We had to climb overboard and shove it back into deep water. As my friend stood there, ankles deep in muck, muscles straining against the weight of the boat, and rain pelting his face, he grinned broadly and with unmistakable sincerity said, “Sure beats shopping!”
Mystery Surprise
How many mystery writers does it take to change a light bulb? Two, one to put it almost all the way in and the other to give it a surprising twist at the end.
Bold Request
A child comes home from his first day at school. His mother asks, “Well, what did you learn today?” The kid replies, “Not enough. They want me to come back tomorrow.”
The Lacklustre Limo Driver
There was this limo driver who was in business for 25 years without a single customer. All that time and nothing to chauffeur it.
The Guy Who Stayed Up All Night
Did you hear about the guy who stayed up all night wondering where the sun was setting? It finally dawned on him!
Together
A couple decided to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary by hosting a big party. The wife was excited and asked her husband what he thought was the bond that kept them together throughout the years. His reply, “Our marriage certificate, dear.”
Productivity
I’m great at multi-tasking. I can waste time, be unproductive, and procrastinate all at once.
Precise Measurement
Two salesmen were standing at the base of a flagpole, looking at its top. A woman walked by and asked what they were doing. “We’re supposed to find the height of this flagpole,” said one, “but we don’t have a ladder.” The woman took a spanner from her purse, loosened a couple of bolts, and laid the pole down on the ground. Then she took a tape measure from her pocketbook, took a measurement, and announced, “Twenty one feet, six inches,” and walked away. One salesman shook his head and laughed, “A lot of good that does us. We ask for the height and she gives us the length.”
Break in the Investigation
Last week our local police station was broken into and the toilet was stolen from the conveniences. Yesterday the police reported that the investigation is on going but they still have nothing to go on.
Animal Joke
What do you get when cross an elephant and a skunk? A smell that you will never forget.
How Bad Am I?
I didn’t realise how bad a driver I was until my navigation system said:“IN 400 FEET, DO A SLIGHT RIGHT, STOP, AND LET ME OUT.”
Literacy Failure
My books all piled on top of me, I’ve only got my shelf to blame.

Who Owns the Monkey?
A man walks into a posh restaurant and orders his meal. While he takes the first bite and is looking around, a monkey swings down and steals his plate from him before he is able to stop it. The man asks the waiter, “Excuse me sir, who owns the monkey?” The waiter replies, “It belongs to the piano player.” The man walks over to the piano player and says, “Do you know your monkey stole my food?” The pianist responds, “No, but if you hum it, I’ll play it.”
I’m Still Ahead
My wife and I were comparing notes the other day. “I have a higher IQ, did better on my SATs, and make more money than you,” she pointed out. “Yeah, but when you step back and look at the big picture, I’m still ahead,” I said. She looked mystified. “How do you figure?” “I married better,” I replied.
Rapid Train Service
A passenger train is creeping along, painfully slowly. Finally, it creaks to a complete halt. A passenger sees a conductor walking by outside. “What’s going on?” she yells out the window. “Cow on the track!” replies the conductor. Ten minutes later, the train resumes its slow pace. Within five minutes, however, it stops again. The woman sees the same conductor walking by again. She leans out the window and yells, “What happened? Did we catch up with the cow again?”
You Can Stay
The doorbell rings. A man opens the door and there’s his mother-inlaw on the front step. She asks, “Can I stay here for a few days?” The man says, “Sure you can.” And he closes the door.

Quick fire jokes from quick print pranksters
Just finished reading the fifth book in the ‘learning to count’ trilogy. I used to be in a band called ‘Missing Cat’. You probably saw our posters. What’s green and smells like yellow paint? Green Paint. I took this personality test on the internet, and it said... “Describe yourself in one word.” I answered, “Not good at following instructions.” I dig, you dig, we dig, he digs, she digs, they dig.
