Each year over 4,000 students from Loughborough Student Union (LSU) volunteer to help the wider community with local campaigns, projects and activities. The Lewisham Polish Centre, Tomasz and the Action Student Volunteers set about collecting donations of key items, such as medical equipment, hygiene products, dry foods, sleeping bags, torches and batteries. Three weeks later, the students had collected over a ton of donations that were then

booked and palleted by Event Engineering and sent on their way to Lewisham Polish Centre; with Premier providing transport of the pallets from Loughborough to the depot, helping to save on additional transport costs. Talking about the drive, Tomasz Cendrowski comments, “I did it because I did not want to stand by and be inactive when help was urgently needed. I

SILVER ANNIVERSARY FOR SIGN & DESIGN’S MIMAKI CUTTING PLOTTER The Mimaki cutting plotter that’s in regular use at Sign & Design (Somerset) Ltd still looks as good as the day the company bought it, according to owner, Paul Dinsdale. Considering that date was in the late 1990s and the cutter is used almost daily, that’s some claim! “We’ve looked after it of course, but it’s still running and cutting perfectly,” he says. “We’ve gone through a few blades and pinch rollers in that time, but it starts up happily, we press the buttons and it does its stuff!” Starting out in the early 1980s, Paul begun his apprenticeship in hand painted signwriting. In 1983, he set up his own sign business and soon won the contract to provide traditional painted signage for a large brewery. As the business grew and took on staff, computers opened up the potential for plotting vinyl lettering and they bought their first cutter. In the mid-1990s, the business moved to larger premises, and employing more staff, invested in the Mimaki CG-101, a 1m wide cutting plotter. “As a trained hand painter, I’ve been able to use this skill along with output from the cutter to deliver a diverse range of products to our customers,” Paul states. “We even use it to combine the two techniques, cutting masks that are then used for hand painting signs.” Other popular products that utilise the 25 year old cutter’s capabilities are school honours boards, where detail is critical, and vinyl garment lettering that’s then heat pressed onto sportswear. Signage within the education sector is also an important area for the business, and applying vinyl to powder coated aluminium sign systems delivers a premium and long lasting result.

“The use that Paul’s business has had from the Mimaki cutter over the last quarter of a century is testament not only to the build quality of the machine, but also how well it’s been looked after,” comments Duncan Jefferies, head of marketing and business development at Mimaki’s distributor for the UK and Ireland, Hybrid Services. “We were absolutely delighted to hear that their investment is still providing such great service, so far down the line.” “The Mimaki has been a fantastic machine,” Paul concludes. “Sign & Design prides itself on bringing together the traditional art of signwriting and the benefits of technology, and this has allowed us to consistently deliver bespoke and high quality, yet cost effective solutions for our clients.” For details of Mimaki’s current product line-up, including the recently launched AR Series of cutting plotters, visit www.hybridservices.co.uk

IPIA AIMS TO STIMULATE PRINT ECONOMY

The IPIA will continue to pursue its goal of stimulating the UK print economy through running a series of networking events and special initiatives across 2022. Argentinian steak restaurant, Gaucho, in Birmingham will thus form the backdrop for some ‘beefy’ business opportunities on May 20th when the Independent Print Industry Association (IPIA) hosts its first physical networking event of the year. Representatives from the print industry, agencies, suppliers, printers, print buyers and end users are all expected to be among the attendees. “The IPIA Spring Networking lunch is always a big draw for members and non-members alike, a chance to explore collaborations and increase print volumes,” says Sharron Mahony, Marketing and Events Manager of the IPIA. Sharron continues: “It’s a relaxed atmosphere where people get to connect with familiar and new faces, spark creative conversations and build new relationships and business. Our role, as hosts, is to provide an informal environment where our consummate networkers can flourish and, having secured exclusive use of the intimate and understated Gaucho restaurant, we’re confident of a very well-attended and productive event.” The full IPIA events programme, consisting historically of some ten events a year, is highly valued by members and sets it apart from other associations. Its virtual Big Breakfast networking events, set up during the pandemic, continues to draw some 60 attendees every month, but the IPIA is thrilled to also be back doing in-person meetings. These events give attendees the chance to not just explore new business, but also discuss best practice and significantly expand their referral network. The IPIA Spring Networking lunch takes place on Friday May 20th at Gaucho in Birmingham, just a stone’s throw from Cathedral Square in the city centre. Its starts with welcome drinks at 12pm followed by a four course sumptuous lunch at 1pm and departure at 3.30pm. Guests are moved in between courses to different tables to ensure everyone gets the chance to connect with those they want to meet. Tickets are on sale now from £56 (ticket price for IPIA/BAPC members. For non-members ticket price is £69), including drinks and lunch, and can be booked at www.ipia.org.uk/networking-lunch-2022 Plans are also being drawn up for the annual national IPIA conference which is expected to take place this September. Details will be announced in due course. More information about the IPIA and its events programme can be found a twww ipia.org.uk

APPRINTABLE ADDS MORGANA LAMINATOR 450 PRO Wembley, North London based Apprintable has announced details of its latest equipment purchase with the addition of a Morgana Laminator Pro 450. Apprintable offers a same day print service for London based clients, and runs a web to print service for clients nationwide. The company is following a clear growth strategy centred around its previously announced Ricoh digital print engine. With regard to this latest post press addition, Peter Haddad, Managing Director of Apprintable, said: “We were spending a fair bit on outsourcing lamination; it made good business sense to keep that money in-house, and bring control of job back into our own hands. Because of the investment in the Ricoh press last year, we’ve been able to bring a lot more production in-house and bringing laminating back here was the obvious next step. “We had a small that we were using for very urgent jobs, but that was a very manual process, and the unit was also difficult to use. It got the job done for the very short run work, but the quality does isn’t even come close to that from the Morgana unit.” Designed for easy operation, the Laminator Pro 450 is a unique high pile automatic feed laminator. It features an integrated compressor and pneumatic system for high quality print lamination up to 450mm working width. This revolutionary compact machine combines speed and ease of operation with quality. This deep pile, automatic suction feed system can achieve speeds of up to 1,875 of SRA3 sheets per hour. A micro-perforation and scissor roller cutting system provides for perforation and separation of sheets. The Laminator Pro 450 is ideal for the on-demand printer. It is both easy to set up and very versatile, being capable of foiling and spot gloss as well as straightforward laminating. Commenting on why he selected Morgana equipment again, Peter added: “We bought our AeroCut Prime from Morgana just before Christmas. It was ordered and delivered within a week. I was so impressed by Morgana and their focus on what the client needs, as well as their ability to assist us so speedily. I can just trust those guys. “I was impressed by the fact that they didn’t want

to sell me something that I didn’t need, such as a higher spec version of the Prime. I felt that I could really trust them and that they cared about my business — their representative used to be a litho printer. We then bought a Canny P50 bander from Morgana following the Prime purchase. It made good business sense to go back to Morgana for this latest purchase. “I did look at other laminating products, just to confirm my selection. There was one with a separate feeding unit — but that gave me doubts because I have seen disconnected systems fail badly. It made sense to stick with Morgana as our finishing machine provider. They gave a fantastic demo of the product, and that gave me a lot of confidence in the purchase.” With the machine now installed and running, Peter adds: “The speed, the ease of webbing it up, and the fact that we can just let it run almost completely unattended have been the obvious benefits for our productivity.” With regard to the work that the new machine will be used for Peter said: “Laminated business cards, flyers, and POS work, as well as more unusual products such as tent cards and coffee cup sleeves. We can use matt, gloss, and soft touch finishes, and will also be adding matt biodegradable material, in keeping with our sustainability focus. “The Laminator Pro 450 can also produce digital

foiling, and this is something that we are currently experimenting with, and will be bringing that work in-house too. It was the foiling capability that really helped to clinch the deal for me. It costs so much to outsource foiling compared to the actual raw material costs involved, so we see this as another huge opportunity.” Overall capital expenditure for products from Morgana in the past three months has totalled £48,000. “It’s a great company to work with. They understand what we need because their team has worked with printers of our size for decades. The individuals that we have met know printing and can understand what we need.” So, what does the next step look like for Apprintable? “We are now already looking at new premises for 2023. Our recent equipment purchases have filled our current factory!” Commenting on the Laminator 450 Pro installation, Ray Hillhouse, Vice-President offline business at Morgana, said: “The Laminator 450 and 450 Pro offer a range of printers the ideal in-house laminating solution. Apprintable is a growing business that is looking to bring as many services in-house as they can. Peter and the team can appreciate that’s where the margins for printers can lie. Using external suppliers just eats into your profits.” www.morgana.co.uk

WTTB has unveiled its very own range of customised products to mark the jubilee, aimed at adding a really royal touch to any celebration. And that includes a specially created “sitee” — a to scale, waist up, cardboard cut out of Her Majesty that will help add a stately touch to the party. The company has come up with every possible item that would make the event memorable, from invitations to banners, selfie frames, posters, hand clappers and wrapping paper. And to ensure that the afternoon cuppa also gets in on the act, there are personalised mugs and cake boxes which have been designed especially for the occasion. THEMAGICTOUCH — INNOVATION, AND MORE INNOVATION! TheMagicTouch in the UK under their DTFMagic brand, has confirmed some very significant enhancements to their new desktop DTF (Direct to Film) Mutoh/STS VJ-628D printer. Announcing the release of additional light cyan and light magenta DTF inks for their 60cm PET film roll fed, compact DTF desktop printer, manufactured by Mutoh in Japan. The new inks from STS with the existing CMYK and 2 x white enables sharper and more vibrant photographic images, accurate colour management together with outstanding gradients and skin tones on garments. The new inks also eliminate half tones. STS, based in Florida, has manufactured inks for over 20 years and supply DTF inks with superb elasticity and durability. The C, M, Y, K, LC, LM inks, together with the 2 x white, are supplied in degassed bulk bags so no ink contamination is possible. All STS DTF inks have their Eco Passport and are OEKO-TEX certified. Another big advantage of the additional inks is the ability to produce full colour transfers for white and pastel garments without the need to apply the white ink. This unique feature dramatically increases the print speed and reduces what is already a very low cost per transfer. Jim Nicol, Managing Director commented “The response to DTF transfer printing over the last 18 months has been nothing other than incredible. The success has been driven by the print quality and range of products that are possible for

10

decoration. We must ensure we offer the right solution for specific customer needs. This new desktop option matches the “DNA” of many of our customers looking to produce up to 300 A3 transfers per day”. The VJ-628D printer easily fits onto an office desk and prints directly to the coated PET film. The printed image then has a powder adhesive applied manually and cured at up to 95°C for a minute using the unique desktop curing oven. DTF transfers work equally well on any colour textiles and allow users to choose between a matt or gloss finish, whilst requiring no pre-treatment, no cutting or weeding, and creating crisp and defined edges and images.

The printer is powered by the DTFMagic Rip featuring the Digital Factory from CADlink to ensure fast processing speeds. The pre-production “cost per transfer” feature is very useful and other features of the RIP include automatic nesting, spot colour matching, rasterisation, back ground removal and lots more. The various DTF solutions can be demonstrated via Zoom or in person at the Dunstable showroom. Printed samples and transfers are also available for evaluation. All pricing is inclusive of delivery, installation and training combined with a one year warranty. www.themagictouch.co.uk • 01582 671444 Email: sales@themagictouch.co.uk

In combination with its new Landa press, the company expects to utilise its new Highcon technology to expand into new and profitable packaging jobs, realising a 30% increase in revenue within three months. The Highcon Beam 2 has been installed as part of an end to end digital print and packaging workflow for folding carton and micro flute corrugated packaging jobs. Implemented at McGowans’ Dublin facility, the Highcon technology is enabling the company to meet increasingly tight deadlines for short run jobs, with less setup time and waste. The new Highcon investment will also support new business from McGowans’ all new on demand e-commerce packaging platform, BoxJob.com, which officially launches in May. “What the Highcon brings to the table is real digital finishing. It’s not only cutting, it is creasing and stripping too. It does so much more than a traditional analogue solution. The introduction of a digital finishing process here has dramatically streamlined our production workflow for increased efficiencies,” said Mal McGowan. “And crucially, having the Landa S10, Nozomi and HP Indigo working together with the Highcon Beam 2 also means that we can offer customers a ‘virtual house’ for all their packaging or display needs. Literally, customers can now make changes to their packaging designs on the fly, produce a smaller batch or simply run a limited seasonal promotion — but without the expensive or waste of unwanted stock, that also has to be stored in expensive real estate. Cool floor graphics and display applications are also reaping the benefits of digital cutting and creasing including improved production times for point of sale displays” added Mal McGowan. McGowans specialises in commercial printing, Point of Sale, and packaging jobs. It offers customers everything from initial concept work, to box design and the supply of complete finished printed products. Historically, the company has been among the first to adopt new digital technologies, proudly bringing new and often ground breaking capabilities to the Irish market. This was recently exemplified by the company’s installation of the Landa S10 Nanographic Printing® Press, which complements the Highcon technology in McGowans’ new digital workflow. The Highcon Beam 2 at McGowans has now been fully operational for six months, supporting jobs from standard boxes

to eye catching and sophisticated packaging and displays. “It is the speed, flexibility and on demand capabilities of the Beam 2 that sell this machine. The amount of work you can do with the Highcon is beyond good,” said Mal McGowan, founder and CEO at McGowans. “Of course, large brands can rely on us for their short-run packaging requirements, but with the introduction of our new website BoxJob.com, we can now also support low volume business — perhaps a small business working online from home. We are excited to see what new doors the Highcon Beam 2 can open for us.” The Highcon Beam 2 also contributes to the company’s sustainability goals. It does this by eliminating the wood, metal and rubber components needed to produce traditional dies, as well as the associated logistics and warehouse costs needed to store them. In addition, it also contributes to a reduction in traditional print volumes and its associated waste, by powering new digital short to medium run jobs. “With the increasing demand for more complex and shorter run jobs, the Highcon Beam 2 is the perfect solution for McGowan’s — improving its digital manufacturing capabilities, increasing capacity, improving lead times and opening the e-commerce market. This is a booming segment right now.” “We are proud to see our first digital cutting and creasing system in Ireland up and running at McGowans — they are a great fit for the technology, we are also working with Litho Supplies in Ireland, who is now an official reseller of Highcon equipment in another step on our digital finishing journey,” said Juergen Freier, VP Sales and GM, Highcon Europe. www.highcon.net

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED!

Later this year, we shall see the official introduction of self-drive cars on our roads — initially for “evaluation” purposes, but, as Martin Christie suggests, there is no doubt that this trend is comings whether we are asking for it or not.

I

t’s all about taking control from fallible human beings and putting faith in intelligent machines. The logic is very simple — most accidents are caused by human error therefore removing the human element should make the roads safer, and perhaps as part of the pressure to push them forward, make traffic flow more smoothly on increasingly congested roads. However, those promoting this technology seem to have more faith in it than those who work with intelligent machines on a daily basis — like us. And you have to ask, in a working environment increasingly at the mercy of technical foibles and failures, whether extending this prospect to the transport system is entirely wise. When that development also puts lives at risk rather than just mere inconvenience, it is surely worth more detailed investigation. Regular readers will know I often start with an apparently unconnected rant about some topical subject on the basis that we do not work in a bubble and that anything that affects the outside world can in some way affect us, especially when it involves the condition of machine learning which has been a more direct example in our own working space. Some years ago, I took a dig at earlier attempts at teaching cars to think for themselves, with companies like Google finding they struggled to cope with the complicated calculations of entering a roundabout or any unpredictable event. Machine learning is all about predictability — which is why your computer keeps offering you things you liked before. But human beings are by their very nature unpredictable; that’s how we learnt and evolved — from banging rocks together to make fire to building space rockets. So I accept that Artificial Intelligence has progressed dramatically since then, as it is used to some extent in almost every device we use daily. But there is a big difference between applying it to your shopping selection and putting your life — or those of others — in its hands. Surely common sense would predict that self-driving cars could only work if all vehicles were driven by the same logic and that mixing them 14

with erratic individual behaviour is a recipe for disaster. And I don’t just mean other cars. For example, the rush to promote two wheels in city centres now has cyclists who conform to no highway code rules or any sense of orderly direction, and much worse electric scooters with untrained and inexperienced riders often doing speeds faster than regular traffic. Even as a pedestrian, I now have to use all my extended senses to walk safely to work across town, with potential hazards likely to assault me from any direction, and this must be a similar experience across the country. It would seem that the best advice for survival is that offered by the late Douglas Adams in his manual for humans in an alien world ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ which was: expect the unexpected. This is not a philosophy artificial intelligence will embrace easily or quickly. It is, however, a condition we have had to get used to on a regular basis in print on demand, which is how I justify this little preamble ramble because you know it’s best to expect the worst, then you may be pleasantly surprised rather than the other way round. If your default mode is that whatever the customer has sent you is wrong in some way, then you won’t be disappointed and instinctively look to find a fault rather than assume it’s correct and discover it doesn’t fit the dimensions or print properly, and before it’s gone too far along the print process. We all make mistakes; it’s all about reducing the chances of them happening before they get expensive in time and paper. Of course, reducing mistakes is also the impeccable logic behind the self-driving car, but when you hear that the driver who is now a passenger will be allowed to watch movies while he/she/they are being whisked through the busy streets or zoomed along bustling motorways, and only take control ‘when it becomes necessary’ the flaw is that it relies on AI to judge when it is necessary. By their very nature, accidents are unpredictable; otherwise, there would be fewer of them. Many are avoided by simple experience and judgement that anticipates they may occur and often only split seconds before they do. Removing both that second sight and the reaction time would seem

to be total folly. It is a human condition as important in the workplace as it is on the road. People already have so many distractions in their daily lives, as we know, because they are not even concentrating on their email messages while also scrolling through social media, browsing shopping choices and admiring cute kittens. The one job at a time philosophy is a distant memory, but it used to go with the advice that it was necessary to do at least one properly. Last month I used the example of a customer who had supplied several similar images, but which all turned out to be taken on different devices, with various modes of quality and clarity. This is increasingly common as people generally will have no specific memory of how an image originated and often no idea how it was edited or saved. This is where the first call in checking images should be using Adobe Bridge or Lightroom (other software is available) to check the finer details contained in the metadata. This is your first line of defence against the unexpected. In this case, although the images appeared to be almost identical at first glance, under more careful scrutiny, they weren’t. This month I had an artist who had had several images taken of different original artworks, and over some period of time, but again each on different cameras, phones and the like. The artist had no idea which was what until I spilt the beans, and we resolved it would be better to have them scanned properly rather than “a friend who has a good camera.” The problem is that so many people use digital imaging daily without understanding how it works and what is involved. Our eyes are amazing as, unlike a camera, we have two of them, and our brains are about to quickly adjust to lighting conditions and focus on the subject. The stereoscopic vision, which is an essential part of animal survival, allows us to determine perspective and dimension. These are all concepts the simple single-lens camera struggles to interpret, regardless of how clever the manufacturers claim it to be, so it’s common to get some MAY 2022 • QUICK PRINT PRO

optical distortion of anything that has straight lines, like buildings, or straight edges like anything square or rectangular. So an image may not quite fit the shape you want to print it. Photoshop has some really clever tools to deal with this now, so you can alter the perspective, not only of the whole image but any particular part or parts of it. Hidden under the familiar crop tool is a more sophisticated one called perspective crop which works by just selecting four corner points on the chosen image and automatically correcting the distortion. This may not be a perfect fix, but any small sections left out can be dragged back into the main one using the warp tool. That can pick out small pieces to make minor adjustments. It gets better as there is a tool that combines both functions under Edit>Puppet Warp, enabling you to select particular items to be placed in proportion to the background. If you click on the tool, the handy tips should pop up to show you how it all works as it’s too much to cover on these pages, but there are also lots of helpful tutorials online that should you how helpful and easy this can be, and which can show you much easier visually than in print. Be aware though that all the virtual experts will show you the way they prefer to do things, so you need to consult a few to pick a favourite. Like most things in Photoshop, there are always several ways of doing things, so QUICK PRINT PRO • MAY 2022

it’s best to choose what suits your working practice. At its simplest, you can convert the image into a layer or preferably a smart object, and pressing Ctrl + pointer gently adjusts the overall skew. Selecting a grid view as an overlay helps get this accurate if you are not confident doing it by eye or with guides. The size of the grid can be altered in Preferences>Guides, Grid and Slices, so that you can adjust to the very millimetre if you want to be that precise. The most basic fails on customer images are usually exposure and focusing, again by relying on automated settings rather than manual intervention. Focusing the lens on a camera has always relied on sharp edges for definition. Pre-digital film cameras would often have a small split screen in the centre of the viewer, which could be used to align straight lines. Digital lenses still need the same aid; otherwise, they are searching for something solid in a world of fog. On more professional cameras, you can change the points it will focus on or the spread of those points. On more simple devices, it may just be a matter of choice between landscapes or portraits by picking a tree symbol or ahead. Choosing the right one will help. Exposure — that is the length of time taken to capture light from the subject- has a similar problem in that without some guidance as to which bit of light is the correct one, it will make up its own mind from a pre-programmed bit of software

developed several years before in a laboratory on the other side of the world. Left to its own choice, the camera will likely choose to let the maximum amount of light in to get the best image result, but as it cannot control the external environment and make it any brighter, it is likely to opt for the slowest shutter speed and largest lens aperture regardless. Slow shutter speeds and wide apertures have always been the cause of poor image capture in photography, and no amount of digital magic and manipulation will do anything to change it. You can now do quite a lot of exposure compensation and colour adjustment in post-production — much more than you could ever do with film in a darkroom. But you are still only making a poor image a little bit better, maybe enough to keep a customer happy at least. The frustration is often having to deal with what could have been a really great image if it was taken properly in the first place, rather than trying to rescue a disaster. Even if the customer goes away content, it’s not very satisfying as a printer. It is, in effect, the least worst option rather than the best possible outcome, which rather neatly takes us full circle to the driverless car, which will have similar choices in the event of potential accidents — which is the most acceptable result? Personally, I’d still prefer a human decision in that choice. 15

GRAHAM TWEEDALE APPOINTED XAAR CEO

Xaar, the inkjet printing technology group, has announced that Graham Tweedale has been appointed to the new role of Chief Operating Officer, reporting into Xaar’s CEO, John Mills. Joining Xaar in 1997 as a technician in the R&D team, Graham helped develop its first generation inkjet printhead products. He spent five years in Sweden working at Xaar’s first manufacturing facility, before returning to the UK to set up and open the Huntingdon factory in 2007. Graham has held several senior management positions within Xaar, and successfully led a number of business critical programmes and product launches. Most recently as General Manager for the Printhead Business, he has played a key role in developing and implementing Xaar’s latest printhead strategy, including the launch of the ImagineX platform and its collaborative approach to development. Graham said, “I am proud and excited to have been appointed as Xaar’s COO, especially at such an important point in the evolution of inkjet technology. The extraordinary speed of innovation I have seen in the first 25 years at Xaar, looks set to be matched and even surpassed in the next 25. “Our creativity, passion and collaborative development with clients will ensure Xaar plays a leading role in unleashing the power of inkjet.” John Mills, CEO of Xaar, said, “I am delighted with Graham’s appointment as COO, and wish him continued success in this new role as we work to deliver sustainable growth and provide the inkjet opportunities our customers demand.”

RICHARD ROTH NEW GM AT ESKO EMEA Richard Roth has been appointed to the role of General Manager EMEA for Esko, the global developer of integrated software and hardware solutions that digitise, automate and connect the go to market process of consumer goods. The move follows Eddy Fadel taking the position of Global Commercial General Manager — where he will oversee global sales, services, marketing and product management — after three successful years serving as EMEA General Manager. “I am very happy to welcome Richard to the Esko family,” said Eddy Fadel. “We will certainly benefit from his broad experience in Danaher’s Product Identification Division. His experience at X-Rite Pantone leading innovation in colour management and his commercial leadership in Videojet’s packaging and print business will be a great asset, both for Esko and for our customers. “Since our integration of AVT inspection systems and our strengthened

olorCut FB775 sheet cuts and creases up to 1,000 micron FB Board/ card, packaging, P.O.S, sampling and prototyping as well as kiss-cut sheet labels. It has been designed in the UK — beautifully engineered, totally accurate and highly affordable. Taking its capability and styling cues from the newly launched ColorCut FB9000PRO, the new FB775 offers exceptionally high 18

speed cutting and powerful, crisp creasing — making it an incredibly versatile and compact digital die cutting solution for digital print finishing. The new FB775 offers impressive production capabilities and features for light to medium digital pint finishing of two and three dimensional items by offering cutting and creasing of virtually any form of print, from cardboard packaging for

high end products and protective cartons, to synthetic point of sale and kiss-cut adhesive labels on up to B2 and larger sheet sizes. And because there are no expensive, conventional cutting dies – it’s all digital — the ability to produce single items, on demand, makes the flatbed perfect for design and cutter sampling as well as prototyping on up to 1,000 micron thick media. MAY 2022 • QUICK PRINT PRO

COVER STORY

Whilst the cutter sports a same time cutting and creasing dual tool head, with pressures of up to 1.5kgf — creasing and 1.2kgf for cutting, it’s the cutters ability to use its revolutionary ‘blended speed’ mode technology that sets it apart from the competition. With three speed modes available, cut and crease actions can be set to high definition for intricate work, standard for mixed shape jobs and fast for straight line action! Rapidly processing jobs at speeds of up to 1,200mm/s with an SRA3 sheet cut in 15-45 seconds (depending on file complexity), the FB775 can handle a variety of media types up to 1,000 micron thick including folding box board, card, paper, synthetics, soft boards, vinyl and label stocks and large sheet sizes up to 580mm x 800mm with an effective cutting area of 480 x 715mm. With a large cutting table, the FB775 can handle B2 folders, and larger

sheets. However, it’s the combination of its quick cut file retrieval along with the ability to place two SRA3 sheets next to each other (or four A4 size), which enables users to achieve higher productivity. The FB775 comes with an upgraded registration system to include 8th generation ARMS sensing, for blisteringly fast job file retrieval and job mark registration, making it great for multiple sheet cutting; the Vision3 CCD camera will automatically search and find the position of each sheet for precision cutting. Terri Winstanley, product and marketing manager states; “The new FB775 is a really powerful yet compact digital die cutter providing accurate and fast production efficiency for any business requiring digital finishing. Anyone who uses it can cut and crease a wide range of materials and fast at 1,200mm a second! However, it’s not all about speed – this model also offers our blended speed modes, so you can cut really fast on the straights and use the high definition setting for those intricate cuts, all on the same job at the same time! And being able to handle B2 and larger sheets, the FB775 provides the user increased productivity with a small footprint device. We are confident that at its incredibly aggressive price point, the FB775 will be an extremely popular model within the extensive ColorCut flatbed range”. Bespoke, market leading software brings many advanced features to aid design and production. The cutter is driven using the ColorCut Production Studio package (included with the system), which is part of Intec’s acclaimed ColorCut Pro software suite. This can be used as a stand alone application with the cutter or as part of a networked solution when used in conjunction with Intec’s ColorCut Pro Server Station. The ColorCut Pro software suite offers sophisticated features with Job Library Manager workflow application and the new Template Maker application for producing vector box templates, to load into Adobe™ Illustrator™ or CorelDRAW™, for use with the cutter. Artworkers also now have a great new feature within the software plug in — create instant reverse crease and cut lines by the click of a button for creasing jobs from the rear. Designed to use minimal floor space, the FB775 can easily be accommodated in any print and finishing environment. www.intecprinters.com

LARGE FORMAT PRINTING

EYE ON DISPLAY

KEEPING AN EYE ON LARGE FORMAT PRINTING It’s been a very busy month for LFP. The Sign & Digital show returned after three years, and boy, did it feel good to be back! Eye on Display’s editor, Jack Gocher offers his monthly report on what quick print pros should be keeping their eye on.

E

ye on Display itself launched in time for the show and we took the time to visit many of the companies that grace the colourful world of large format printing. We are delighted to accept QPP’s invitation to provide a brief overview of the latest announcements and events in this sector — as announced on www. Eyeondisplay.co.uk New Fashtech Innovation Centre Our very first story came from the launch by Kornit Digital and Fashion-Enter of the UK Fashtech Innovation Centre in Haringey. This unique centre incorporates fashion designers, printers and textile production. At its core is sustainability — as Chris Govier, President Europe, Middle East, and Africa, Kornit Digital, told us, “We have this belief that by being more successful in the technological and commercial parts of the business, we actually also help to save the planet and build a better place in a world that we can all live in.”

Another big Kornit story we covered was the Fashion Week in Israel where they launched the new Kornit Atlas MAX Poly system direct to garment (DTG) solution. This system allows recreational sportswear, promotional, and sports brands to embrace vibrant and colourful design. The Kornit UK Fashion Week will be in London between 15 and 17 May.

MANY NEW PRODUCTS FROM HYBRID AT SDUK

Duncan Jefferies, Head of Marketing and Business Development at Hybrid Services, took time out at Sign & Digital to go through the raft of new products on their stand. This 20

included the brand new Mimaki CJV330160 integrated print and cut machine and the JFX600-2513, an 8’ x 4’ UV flatbed that delivers significant speed increases. They also launched a new cutting machine, a new

UJF UV flatbed for personalised printing of promotional items and a brand new 3D printer.

For more from Sign & Digital, please visit our YouTube channel (just search for Eye on Display) to see exclusive interviews from around the show. These include an interesting chat with Craig Brown, CEO of ISA UK about the benefits of joining the ISA and with Phil McMullin, UK Pro Graphics Sales Manager at Epson, who talked us through their latest wide format printers. We also spoke to Brad Goldsmith, Marketing Services Manager at Premier Paper, about the thinking behind their Back to the Future stand branding and their new range of sustainable media.

year allowed Cora Graphics to expand into profitable new markets. “The variety and volume of work the printer can get through and the speed at which it prints allows us to take on many projects at one time without having to compromise on the quality of the end product,” says Director, Declan McNeil. One market that has proved particularly successful for Cora Graphics is vehicle wrapping, with the company having taken on several interesting and creative van wrap jobs, all printed on the Ricoh Pro L5160e.

While it was great to see so many new products, we also ran a story about Signs & Designs in Somerset who are still raving about their Mimaki CG-101 cutting plotter, which they purchased nearly 25 years ago!

INSTALLED!

Also this month we covered a range of user stories — from brand new installations to long established case studies. Our most popular stories were the installation of a new EFI Vutek at KGK Genix by CMYUK and the first new Roland DG TrueVIS print and cut series installations in Europe at Works of Hart and Funky Labels by printMAX. In our case study section, we reported how an investment in a Ricoh Pro L5160e latex large format printer installed last

PAPER CHASE

FEDRIGONI ENTERS RFID TECHNOLOGY The Fedrigoni Group, a global player of reference in the production of high value added special papers for packaging, publishing, and graphics, as well as premium labels and self-adhesive materials has announced its investment in a majority share of Tageos. Tageos is a global market leader in the design and manufacturing of RFID inlays and tags, headquartered in Montpellier, France, with further offices, sales, R&D and operations in Germany, the U.S., Hong Kong and China. Tageos’ growth potential is far above the overall RFID industry level. The fast growing customer and market demand for innovative, high quality RAIN RFID (UHF) and NFC (HF) inlays, which enable businesses to digitise their product offerings, has led to a greater need for expansion in order to continue to accelerate profitable growth. With this deal, Fedrigoni acquires the majority of the Tageos’ capital through a direct investment and from shareholders including Newfund Capital as well as Tageos’ founders, who will retain their leadership positions in the company. As part of the agreement, Fedrigoni will have the right to purchase the remaining shares in Tageos in the future. Thanks to this acquisition, the Group strengthens its position as the third player in the world of self-adhesive materials, where it operates through several brands such as Arconvert, Manter and Ritrama. It will also enable Fedrigoni to add more value to its customers and existing markets such as food, wine and spirits, cosmetics, healthcare and pharma. Moreover, the company will enhance its market share in key strategic growth areas like retail, logistics and industrial applications, and the acquisition will also bring new opportunities for the paper division, particularly in the luxury packaging segment, where companies are increasingly looking for solutions to protect their brands, verify authenticity and prevent counterfeiting, especially in light of the exponential growth of e-commerce.

“Tageos is a company with excellent growth prospects which operates in a sector that is definitely interesting for us, with a technology and customer base that is very complementary to ours,” says Marco Nespolo (pictured) CEO of the Fedrigoni Group. “Thanks to this acquisition, we are entering the ‘smart label’ market, pursuing our strategy of continuously widening our offer in all the most attractive and promising adjacent segments.” Matthieu Picon, Co-Founder and CEO of Tageos also expressed his excitement: “Being backed and supported by Fedrigoni Group, and its owner Bain Capital, will allow us to further boost our global market expansion and continuous growth as a market leader in RFID inlays and tags. Our existing and new customers will undoubtedly welcome Fedrigoni and its offerings. I am fully convinced that both, our companies’ DNA as well as our common ambitions fit perfectly together, and will form a strong basis for our joint success.” “Today, we are adding a further element to the leadership of Fedrigoni in the world of premium self-adhesive materials,” adds Fulvio Capussotti, Executive Vice President of the Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives business unit. “We will support Tageos in both growing production capacity and entering new market sectors, thanks to the pervasiveness of our commercial activities and the global geographical presence of our Group.” www.fedrigoni.com

SAPPI EXPANDS MILL IN ITALY FOR SUBLIMATION PAPERS In the next two years Sappi will be investing a sum in the low double digit millions to expand its “Centre of Excellence” for speciality papers at its facility in Carmignano, northern Italy. With this investment, the company plans to increase production capacity to support further growth in the existing dye sublimation business, in combination with an improved first class service and lead times. •• Expansion of the mill facility to meet growing demand •• Support the current growth of the dye sublimation industry •• Improve lead time and sustainability footprint of the mill As early as in 2018, Sappi recognised the importance of sublimation paper for digital transfer printing. It took over the speciality paper business of Cham Paper Group, a Swiss group of companies internationally active in the field of speciality paper with high performance mills in Carmignano and Condino (Italy). The opening of the Digital Solutions Centre in Carmignano a year later supported the launch of additional product innovations in the field of sublimation printing – for example the Transjet Tacky Industrial and the Transjet Drive.

22

Now Sappi is committing further to the site near Venice: with an investment of several million euros, the Carmignano “Centre of Excellence” will be further strengthened by the end of 2023. “Our sublimation papers are ideal for a variety of products in the fashion, home textile, sportswear, soft signage and hard substrate sectors. They perform exceptionally well with maximum ink transfer and minimum ink consumption. Over the next five years, we see a significant increase in demand for these papers,” says Luis Mata, Sales

Director Packaging & Digital Solutions. “And this is why we are now expanding our capacities.” Construction will begin in the middle of the year. “By expanding our mill in Carmignano, we can offer a complete in-house solution for sublimation papers from development and production, through converting to shipment. This will enable us to keep the highest quality standards in all the production steps and offer a world class service to our customers, while positively impacting our CO2 emissions.” says Pierluigi Masi, Paper Mill Director in Carmignano. The conversion is scheduled for completion by the end of 2023. www.sappi-psp.com

SHOWTIME: THE PRINT SHOW

MONTY DON IS CELEBRITY SPEAKER AT THE PRINT SHOW The Print Show has announced gardening icon and popular television personality Monty Don OBE as the third and final celebrity speaker for the 2022 show. One of the most respected names in the horticultural world, Monty is most famously known as the lead presenter of BBC series ‘Gardener’s World’, which he has fronted since 2003. Monty has starred in a host of other major television programmes including ITV’s ‘This Morning’. While he has also presented a number of his own shows, most recently ‘Monty Don’s Adriatic Gardens’ that debuted in January 2022. Aside from his many television appearances, Monty has enjoyed a distinguished writing career and has more than 25 books to his name. In addition, between 1994 and 2006, Monty wrote a weekly gardening column in The Observer. Monty has achieved all this and so much more despite having to battle depression since his midtwenties, while he also suffered a stroke in February

2008. However, Monty bounced back and has been an incredible inspiration to gardeners and non gardeners alike. “We are absolutely delighted to have an icon like

Monty on board for The Print Show 2022,” event director Chris Davies said. “Monty has had such a varied career and I’m really looking forward to hearing some of his many inspirational stories at The Print Show in September.” Monty Don is the third and final celebrity speaker for The Print Show 2022, joining British legend Frank Bruno and former Countdown host Nick Hewer at the event, which will run from September 20th to 22nd at the NEC in Birmingham. The celebrity speaker feature proved an incredibly popular addition when it ran for the first time at The Print Show 2019. World famous explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, boxing icon Chris Eubank, and MasterChef host Gregg Wallace delighted visitors with their stories. Once again, visitors will be able to put their own questions to the trio of celebrities, with one speaker to feature on each day of The Print Show. In addition, everyone in attendance will have the chance to meet and have their picture taken with each of the celebrities at a dedicated area inside the hall. www.theprintshow.co.uk

SIGN & DIGITAL UK: A SUCCESS FOR PREMIER Premier joined the likes of Zünd, InkTec and the IPIA for a successful Sign & Digital event. For over 25 years, Sign & Digital UK has been an important event for sign making, display solutions and digital printing; providing a perfect platform for businesses and professionals to network, showcase the latest products and innovations, whilst at the same time celebrating the industry. In 2019, Premier chose to launch their new Display Graphics division and dedicated portfolio of products at Sign & Digital UK. Since then, things have gone from strength to strength for Premier and their Display Graphics team, as they have developed their portfolio further to include products such as Ultraboard (the 100% recyclable honeycomb centred board – manufactured here in the UK), as well as improving their service offering with a dedicated conversion facility and joining associations such as ISA UK and FESPA UK. Premier’s stand at the 2019 event took on a movie set theme, an apt choice given that it was Premier’s ‘premiere’, but for the 2022 exhibition they had something slightly different planned. Goldsmith remarks, “The team sat down in 2021 to establish our preliminary objectives for the SDUK exhibition. Given the disruption and the negative impact that the previous years had had on everybody, we felt that conveying a positive message was an important aspect of what we wanted to achieve; Sign and Digital for Premier, was about getting back to the future and that is where the core elements behind our stand design and message began.” Premier’s stand took inspiration from the town square movie set of the 1985 cult classic ‘Back to the Future’. Complete with a courthouse mall and a movie spec Delorean DMC-12, the stand featured a 3.9m tall courthouse showing off an array of printed graphics as well as backlit Plexiglas windows. eTEC PVC-free leaves littered the grass around the base of each seven foot tall Ultra Board tree, whilst FloorShark flames kicked out from beneath the Delorean’s back tyres. Premier included a back lit Contra Vision display unit as well as two demonstration zones, each with a Plexiglas window, to help showcase products including Neschen Solvoprint Window Grip Ultra Clear, KernowJet MetaliK and eTEC PVC-Free. The combination of these different elements helped to ensure that Premier had a busy and engaging stand, the finishing touch however was actor Dean

24

Taylor, who provided an energetic performance as Back to the Future’s Doc Brown. Brad continues, “Sign and Digital UK exceeded our expectations; the footfall was better than we thought it would be and we captured almost 300 quality leads! It was great to see so many faces from the industry, along with some incredible stands and exhibitors. We’re already looking forward to seeing everyone again in 2023!”. PHOTOTEX IS SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION FOR WALL DECORATIONS

To meet the sustainability requirements of Hilson Moran, a leading firm of building consulting engineers, Vinyl Impression has provided and installed several wall decorations using Phototex. This self-adhesive fabric material is fully recyclable, fully removeable and repositionable and never damages walls or leaves sticky residue. It is also very easy to install, all of which made Phototex the ideal solution for Hilson Moran. Hilson Moran provides a comprehensive range of services in connection with buildings and the built environment. Emma Gold, Senior Graphic Designer for Hilson Moran says, “Sustainability is core to our values and beliefs. As a significant provider of professional advice, assessment, and design services, we recognise our responsibility to encourage sustainable development, to understand and manage business activities to prevent pollution. We also strive to ensure that the best practicable environmental options are always proposed to protect the environment, while achieving our business aims.” Therefore, one of the company’s biggest concerns prior to starting the project was ensuring that any printed decorations were made of sustainable and recyclable materials. Emma says, “We hadn’t worked with a vinyl decoration consultant before, and Vinyl Impression was one of several suppliers we contacted. Vinyl Impression were extremely detailed in their desire to understand our needs and the solutions they proposed exactly met our requirements. They were also the only supplier to send us a material sample, which gave us a great idea of how the final prints would look and how easy to use the material was.” Installing Phototex was very easy. The installations went very smoothly with no

surprises and no problems. “Everyone in the office was very impressed with the quality of the work. The install process was, in a word, reassuring. Any questions we had were swiftly answered following the survey undertaken by Vinyl Impression, which comfortably allayed any fears we had. Everything was well organised, and I was well prepared for what to expect. First class customer service!” she adds. Phototex is a PVC-free fabric material that is fully recyclable, which met Hilson Moran’s key sustainability requirements. In 2021, The company joined the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) Net Zero Carbon Buildings commitment. “As part of this commitment, we are implementing a detailed roadmap to reduce carbon emissions and increase renewably sourced energy within occupied assets – including a pledge to only occupy assets that are net zero carbon in operation by 2030. In 2021 we launched our Carbon Manifesto, which sets out that by 2030 we will achieve net zero carbon and adhere to circular economy principles. We also have an Environmental Management System which meets the requirements of ISO 14001, externally certified by BM Trada,” says Emma. She concludes, “The installation itself was superb. The installers took care to ensure everything was perfect and they made the whole process very smooth with no surprises. It’s been an absolute pleasure to work with Vinyl Impression and to use Phototex. Nothing was too much trouble and an excellent job well delivered. I would happily recommend them for excellent products and service.” www.phototex.co.uk • www.vinylimpression.co.uk

TWO SIDES - FACT SHEETS Print and paper is a highly sustainable form of communication in today’s digital society. Despite this, there are still misconceptions that it is wasteful, detrimental to the environment and responsible for deforestation. More worrying is the misunderstanding that digital communication is more environmentally friendly, which is not always the case. To address these misconceptions, and to better inform and educate consumers, businesses and the public at large, Two Sides has published a series of fact sheets to address a wide array of environmental and social issues. The comprehensive fact sheets cover the most common areas of misunderstanding, ranging from the real environmental impact of electronic communication, to the sustainability of paper based printed products, as well as tackling the important role that print and paper plays in literacy and learning. Members of Two Sides can also personalise the fact sheets: creating a powerful addition to their own sustainability materials. MIMAKI PRINTER/CUTTER TAKES STRIPES & GRAPHICS ON A MINI ADVENTURE

With a 30 year history striping and detailing Minis, Sean Beeston’s heritage working with the iconic automobile brand as a sign maker is unique, and investment in a Mimaki CJV150 printer/cutter has fuelled the Stripes & Graphics business; developing new product lines, expanding the team and attracting new customers. Starting out in the 1990s as a valeteer with a box of car stripes, Sean grew his business on recommendation, supplying and fitting graphics to a growing number of Mini dealerships across the Midlands and North West. When Stripes & Graphics purchased its Mimaki CJV150 towards the end of a turbulent 2020, the business soon took new directions as it reaped the benefits of bringing print in-house. “We’d previously bought in our print requirement, but as the business grew, we needed to ensure we gained tighter control of our supplies,” Sean describes. “The Mimaki has been central to our growth as, throughout the pandemic, we were able to offer a wider variety of products that meet the needs of new and existing clients.” In addition to supplying and fitting vehicle liveries, Stripes & Graphics enjoyed strong demand for shop signage and window graphics, with the addition of new products including floor graphics and safety signage helping boost profits and stem the downtrend of a depressed motor trade. However, when that side of the business picked up, introducing further new options such as pull-up banners and dealer branded facemasks brought new revenue streams along too. “Aside from the fact we can offer a wider product range, we’re saving around £4-5,000 a month by producing digital print on the Mimaki ourselves,” Sean confirms. Purchasing the CJV150 from Mimaki Authorised Reseller Partner, Granthams, Sean appreciated the level of training and technical knowledge he received after delivery. “Granthams has been superb. We were up and running in a day, and the Mimaki, alongside the laminator that was installed at the same time, have been

an integral part of the business ever since.” Stripes & Graphics is now a true family enterprise, with Sean’s wife Jackie overseeing the accounts, and sons Robbie and Lewis joining the business to help cope with demand. “We pick up nearly all our customers through word of mouth,” he continues, citing a large order for wrapped point of sale units that benefits from the high print quality of the CJV150. “We’ve never previously been able to deliver full colour print at this quality, so offering high end point of sale material is a real advantage for us.” One client that’s benefiting from Stripes & Graphics expanded product range is Acorn Motor Group, the highly rated Kia, MG and Suzuki specialists with multiple dealerships across Staffordshire and Cheshire. “Stripes & Graphics handle all the vehicle graphics for their new cars, as well as branding and signage across the dealerships. We’re even involved in supplying and fitting the paint protection film for their high end ‘Specialist Cars’ arm, working on Ferraris and Bentleys to ensure they stay looking as good as when they left the showroom,” Sean notes. With rising demand, Stripes & Graphics moved into brand new, 2,000sq ft premises in Ollerton, near Market Drayton, Shropshire in January 2022. “We’ve always offered a mobile service, fitting graphics and window tints on-site at car dealerships and vehicle accident repair centres, but the new premises give us a new angle on how we work,” he continues. “Providing a clean and controlled environment to apply graphics, along with a studio for handling our logo design and branding work elevates our service once again.” Still supplying customers whose business he won over 25 years ago, Sean sees a bright future for Stripes & Graphics. “Robbie and Lewis share my philosophy of delivering high quality custom designs and it’s fulfilling to see the business serving our motor trade customers so well, whilst at the same time, bringing new customers from other industries on board with innovative and exciting products.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

THE BENEFITS OF COMBINING PRINT AND DIGITAL A powerful marketing strategy is key to a successful business. This connects corporations and customers, both in person and online. But how do you know which strategy is right for your company? Here, we will explore some of the main benefits of print, digital, and hybrid marketing.

estimated to be worth a staggering £129 billion, and spending towards it increased by 9.6% from the previous year. 1. Digital marketing is precise: Digital marketing is more precise than ever before. This can be accredited to recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), which has allowed businesses to understand customer preferences personalise content accordingly. A social media advertisement, for example, can then be directed towards the relevant consumers. 2. Digital marketing is adaptable: In addition to its precision, digital marketing is also highly adaptable. If a particular piece of marketing is successful, businesses can change this to favour certain demographics. This can happen during a campaign, and digital marketers can produce multiple examples of the same advertisement rather than having a single piece of print.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF COMBINING PRINT AND DIGITAL MARKETING?

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DIRECT MAIL MARKETING?

We are living in the technological age, and latest gadgets have successfully replaced any written form of communication. This does not, however, render direct mail marketing obsolete. In fact, the Digital Marketing Association reported that the engagement of this strategy has actually increased from 91% in 2019 to 96% in 2020. 1. Direct mail is secure: First and foremost, direct mail is secure. In the last 12 months, 39% of businesses have experienced cyber-attacks. Therefore, customers may be more inclined to believe the information on a direct mailing service than a digital marketing campaign, such as an email. 2. Direct mail is memorable: Customers scroll past hundreds if not thousands of online advertisements every day. The constant influx of digital marketing can often lead to overlooking this material. In comparison, a direct mailing service offers customers a tangible product. There is something much more memorable about holding something in your own hands.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DIGITAL MARKETING?

Digital marketing — a strategy that reaches customers online — is beneficial in more ways than one. For one thing, the market is extremely successful. In 2021 alone, digital advertisements were

There are multiple benefits to print and digital marketing. To ensure your business is successful, you can make the most out of both resources. Here are two reasons why you should adopt a hybrid marketing strategy. 1. Hybrid marketing appeals to multiple demographics : A hybrid marketing strategy will target multiple demographics, enabling your business to reach a larger customer base. Traditionally, a younger demographic might have responded better to a digital marketing campaign. This stereotype, however, is fast becoming incorrect. In fact, the DMA reports that the Gen Z demographic are actually 40% more likely to be influenced by direct mail than older generations. Therefore, combining print and digital can appeal to multiple audiences. 2. Hybrid marketing drives success: The nature of hybrid marketing drives success. A piece of direct mail, for example, can also be used to promote digital resources. This call to action (CTA) can be a modified URL or a unique product code. The direct results of these can then be measured to track any sales gained. So much so, the DMA reported that direct mail influenced 92% of people to visit online resources, and 87% made an online purchase because of this. To summarise, a hybrid marketing strategy combines the best of both print and digital resources. This will maximise any promotional efforts made by your business. And knowledge of your consumer market will influence the degree to which you use both methods. Will you combine them? THE JOKE’S ON YOU

READERS’ SCRIBES

SOMETHING TO SHARE? WOKE UP

I told my friend that my wife and I had a huge argument and she left for the Caribbean. “Jamaica?” he asked. “No,” I replied, “she went of her own accord.”

The lawyer, very dishevelled, comes before the priest and the boy and says, “As a lawyer, I’ve used my legal knowledge to crack hundreds of cases and I’m probably the smartest man in the world, so I deserve to live!” Before the boy and the priest can react, the lawyer grabs a pack and jumps. The priest comes before the boy, getting on one knee and placing a hand on his shoulder. “Son,” he begins, “as a priest, I’ve lived a long and dutiful life in service to the Lord, and I have no doubt that when this plane crashes, I’ll be taking my place at my Father’s table. You have your entire life ahead of you, so you take the last parachute and go.” Unfazed, the kid hands the preacher a parachute and says, “Don’t worry, take this one: the smartest man in the world just jumped out with my backpack!”

MAYDAY MAYDAY

PUNS YOU CAN PRINT

I was born male, I identify as a male, but according to Sainsburys Deluxe Sticky Toffee Pudding I am actually a family of four!

INTERVIEW WITH A JOURNALIST

A quote from an interview with the Operations Manager of a growing company. The journalist asks, “So how many employees are working in your company?” The manager replies, “Approximately half of them!”

WORLD’S OLDEST JOKE?

A blonde saleslady is on a two-seater aeroplane when the pilot suddenly passes out. Not knowing how to fly the plane she grabs the radio and says: “Mayday, mayday, my pilot just died!” Ground control received her call for help and replies: “Don’t worry, I’ll talk you down, just do as I say. First, I need you to give me your height and position?” Blonde: “I’m 5’2 and sitting on the right front seat!”

FIVE PEOPLE ON A PLANE

A doctor, a priest, a lawyer, a young boy, and the pilot were flying when the pilot comes on the intercom mid-flight screaming “Mayday! Mayday! The plane is going to crash! Now listen up: there’s only four parachutes on this plane and five of us, so you guys decide who’s staying with the plane, but I’m jumping!” And with that, the pilot grabs a parachute and leaves the doomed plane. The doctor comes before the other passengers of the plane and says, “As a doctor, I’ve used my medical skills to save hundreds of lives, and if I escape, I’ll be able to save hundreds more.” The rest of the passengers satisfied with his response, they let the doctor grab a parachute and leave the plane.

I was visiting the house of a distant cousin…

I was wondering why the ball was getting bigger. Then it hit me. What did the ranch say when somebody opened the fridge? “Hey, close the door! I’m dressing!” I can’t believe I got fired from the calendar factory. All I did was take a day off. Waking up this morning was an eye-opening experience. Being a vegetarian is one big missed steak. I was addicted to the hokey pokey, but thankfully, I turned myself around. My dad unfortunately passed away when we couldn’t remember his blood type. His last words were, “Be positive!” Just burned 2,000 calories. That’s the last time I leave brownies in the oven while I nap. We dressed up as almonds for Halloween. Everyone thought we were nuts. I stayed up all night to see where the sun went. Then it dawned on me. There was a kidnapping at school yesterday. Don’t worry though — he woke up! I was hoping to steal some leftovers from the party but my plans were foiled. What kind of cats love bowling? Alley cats. Who invented King Arthur’s round table? Sir

… when I saw that he was playing chess with his dog.

Cumference. Is your iPad making you sleepy? There’s a nap for that. I have a friend whose bakery burned down last night. Now his business is toast. I lost my mood ring the other day. I’m not sure how I feel about it. I don’t trust staircases. They’re always up to something. What washes up on tiny oceans? Microwaves! I’m good friends with 25 letters of the alphabet. I just don’t know Y. My leaf blower doesn’t work. It just sucks! If you see an Apple Store get robbed, does that make you an iWitness? Don’t ever believe an atom. They make up everything. A book just fell on my head. I only have myshelf to blame. A man sued an airline for losing his luggage. He lost his case. Why didn’t the sesame seed leave the poker table? He was on a roll. Did you hear about the guy who tried to grab fog? He mist. I wrote a song about a tortilla. Actually, it’s more of a wrap. Why did the can crusher quit his job? He was soda pressed. I forgot where I dug my watering hole, but I meant well. Did you hear how they finally caught the brake fluid thief? He said he could stop anytime. Why was the will so obvious? It was a dead giveaway. I used to be addicted to soap. But then I got clean.

WHAT, WHAT, WHAT…

What kind of exercise do lazy people do? Diddlysquats. What do you call a pony with a cough? A little horse! What is Forrest Gump’s password? 1Forrest1. What’s red and moves up and down? A tomato in an elevator!

I said that it had to be the most intelligent dog ever.

“Absolutely not! She has lost all of her matches!”
