HRH The Duke of York encourages apprenticeships

PROSKILLS UK, along with senior staff from The Printing Charity and other businesses in printrelated industries, met at Hackney Community College where they took part in a discussion led by HRH The Duke of York, KG on the benefits of hiring apprentices. The Duke is committed to encouraging organisations of all kinds to consider supporting, or increasing their support for, apprenticeships. His Royal Highness said: “In an Industry that is rapidly changing in technology, the print industry has changed by all recognition but still needs skills.” Employers and their apprentices who already train at Hackney Community College outlined the structure of apprenticeship pathways in the printing industry. Guests were treated to afternoon

tea by students and apprentices in the college’s Hoxton Street training restaurant, Open Kitchen. Print and related industry companies represented at the event included the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), Commercial Group, Digital Copy, Disc to Print UK, Earth Island Publishing, HP, Real Ripple Media, Renz, Sharp Electronics, St Bride Foundation, and Vpress. The Printing Charity provides a range of support and assistance for individuals across the printing industry and allied trades and actively encourages apprenticeships in the trades. Chief Executive, Stephen Gilbert, said: “We have a long history of providing financial and practical help to individuals associated with the printing trade. It is vitally important that the industry looks

forward to its future, and we firmly believe that encouraging and supporting apprenticeships is key to the success of the UK printing industry. We are very grateful to have the support of His Royal Highness in this venture.” Proskills UK, also a registered charity, supports the print industry through its PrintIT! careers programme by showcasing the innovative and exciting career opportunities which are available to young people. Proskills UK also works with print employers to develop industry based qualifications and apprenticeships and with training providers to ensure there is enough capable resource to deliver these into industry across the nation. “There is a lack of print-specific careers information in schools and teachers are just not trained to give print careers advice to youngsters. Therefore it’s difficult for students to make an informed choice about whether to join the print industry. Proskills’ PrintIT! aims to break this deadlock by allowing students to participate in print activities by gaining careers advice on route as part of the learning process.” Explained Jonathan Ledger, Managing Director of Proskills UK Group. “Working closely with employers and industry bodies, our role is to help young people make that transition from school into apprenticeships and so gain real jobs in the workplace. Far too few students make this journey and so by working collaboratively, we know we can increase the number of students entering the print industry. We are very grateful that His Royal Highness is supporting the take up of apprentices in the print industry.” Ian Ashman, Principal of Hackney Community College, said: “Today’s event, led by The Duke, has raised awareness of the extensive apprenticeship opportunities in the printing and related industries. We look forward to supporting some of these companies to take on local young apprentices.” For more information please contact the PrintIT! team on 01235 432030 or printit@proskills.co.uk.

The Rt. Hon. David Blunkett MP talks apprenticeships THE Rt Hon David Blunkett MP was the very entertaining guest speaker at The Printing Charity’s 187th Annual Luncheon at Stationers’ Hall, London. “Apprenticeships are fundamental to our future,” he said. “The city I represent was built on craft skills and I hope we see a return to those skills.” He praised The Printing Charity for its work, including its support of apprenticeships in the print industry. “It’s been said that ‘books were something we did before the Internet’ but that’s not true,” he added. “Social media is here to stay, but digitalisation is not the end of printing. The two can coexist.” At the event The Printing Charity presented the

Venerable David Meara, Archdeacon Emeritus of London with a Pro Merito badge for his support of The Printing Charity for the past 11 years. Lord Black of Brentwood, Chief Executive of the Telegraph Media Group and President of The Printing Charity, said: “As the Rector of St Bride’s and Archdeacon of London, David Meara has been an ever present figure in Fleet Street and the spiritual guiding light of our industry for the past 14 years. He will be missed.” Over 160 people from the printing and publishing industries attended the event, which raised £1,290 through five prize draws for the charity’s work.

TJ International colour short-run book production TJ International, a UK-based printer of hard and soft cover books, is branching into short-run digital colour production for the first time with the installation of an Océ ColorStream 3900 inkjet system from Canon at its facility in Padstow, Cornwall. The technology will enable the company to meet customer demand for full colour books in print runs below 200 — something it has previously been unable to offer economically using existing offset technology. Additionally, TJ International will be able to mirror the service it already offers in monochrome production, which allows it to manage the full lifecycle of a book from initial high-volume print runs and re-prints using offset, to short-run and single copy print-on-demand using digital. “This purchase marks another milestone in our 16 year relationship with Canon since we embarked on a journey of digital production in the late 90s,” said Angus Clark, CEO, TJ International. “The ColorStream 3900 is a strategic move into inkjet and demonstrates that, as a customer-focused business, we have again listened to what our customers need and are making the appropriate investments to help them succeed. “The new system will enhance and complement the capabilities of our existing technology portfolio. We produce a lot of two colour books very successfully and have done so for many years. However, historically if a customer needed to take the print run below a quantity of 200, we had to turn work away. The new ColorStream 3900 will not only allow us to say ‘yes’ to this type of work from existing customers and keep colour titles in print indefinitely, but will also give us a competitive edge to attract new business that was previously inconceivable,” added Clark. Digital book production currently accounts for 25 per cent of turnover at TJ International and it is anticipated that, with the new technology in place and the subsequent doors this will open, this will increase to 50 per cent of total output within the next three years.

TJ International has been at the forefront of digital book production since its relationship originally began with Océ in 1998. It was the first UK book printer to install the Océ DemandStream, Océ VarioPrint 6250 and Océ VarioPrint 6320 technology — allowing it to cost-effectively scale production according to changing customer and industry demand. The company’s current digital portfolio comprises an Océ ColorStream 10000 Flex and two Oce VarioPrint cut-sheet monochrome printers that will sit alongside the ColorStream 3900. The high speed Océ ColorStream 3900 prints at speeds of up to 127m/min and, through its unique combination of productivity, efficiency and quality, it simplifies and accelerates the transition from monochrome to full-colour. The DigiDot multilevel dot modulation produces crisp details and smooth halftones with a perceived quality of 1200 dpi at fully rated speed. “As with any major investment it is always prudent to look at all viable options in the marketplace and this is no different for us when it comes to digital print technology — despite our longstanding relationship with Canon. However, having done our research on other products that could take us into short-run colour work, we still firmly believe that

Canon’s offering is far more advanced than other products available,” added Clark. “Moreover, the service and support the company offers is unparalleled. As well as initial operator training on the new ColorStream 3900, Canon has provided a course for our sales team covering how to sell short-run colour print — this will prove invaluable as it is an entirely new realm of business for us. The sales team returned from training excited about the new discussions they can now have with customers. “We’ve been in book printing for 40 years and with the support of Canon, helping us to face new challenges and meet the needs of the industry, I see no reason why we won’t be just as successful in another 40 years.” Craig Nethercott, Commercial Print Group Director, Canon UK, commented: “Continually finding ways to address the challenges faced by its customers is what drives TJ International forward as a business. Its success to date is born of shrewd investment and an inherent understanding of the changing market in which it operates. We are delighted to be involved in the next part of the company’s journey into short-run colour print.” For further information about Canon UK please visit www.canon.co.uk

Canon publish full insight Report 2014 CANON has announced the publication of its full 2014 Insight Report. Entitled Building your future with print. This latest independent industry survey is the fifth in the series of Insight Reports commissioned by Canon to analyse the trends and opportunities for print. Overall findings from the research show that there is a healthy demand for print as a communications medium and little sign of decline over the past two years, with 62% of print and media buyers commissioning print for their communications campaigns. However, from the perspective of the print service providers (PSPs), 80% now recognise the need to change to meet the future needs of their customers – an increase of 8% since the first Insight report in 2008. Conducted by an independent research consultancy, the objective of this latest survey sets out to compare the views of PSPs with print and media buyers, to examine how these trends and attitudes have changed from earlier reports. By analysing feedback from the two participating groups, the results of the report provide a clearer vision and set of recommendations for PSPs to successfully drive their business forward. The survey centred around over 550 telephone interviews with senior decision makers (275 commercial printers and CRDs, and 277 print and media buyers of differing sizes) across a wide range of sectors and from 25 countries throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. According to the views of the print buyers, print still offers considerable value, possessing the unique ability to reflect quality, reach the more challenging ‘offline’ audiences and differentiate messaging from digital communication. However, with predictions of growth in digital and online media, and with 38% of buyers indicating a likely decrease in the use of print, PSPs will need to continue to work hard to promote the values of print to prevent migration to what is perceived by respondents to be more measureable and trackable ‘virtual’ alternatives. While print buyers are broadly satisfied with their print providers – with 84% stating they meet their communications needs – there is still scope for greater customer engagement to improve business opportunities. Only 56% of print buyers feel they are made aware of new developments by their PSPs, leaving 44% acknowledging their PSP is not keeping them informed. This indicates there is still room for PSPs to improve in terms of providing proactive advice and introducing them to the latest products and technologies. Despite some lack of education in the latest developments, awareness and use of digital print applications and services continues a strong upward trend, with short run publications, print-on-demand and web-to-print all witnessing

continued growth, fuelled in part by cost and time pressures from the buyers. Web-to-print has seen the greatest increase since the last Insight report, with a 50% growth since 2012, with almost one in three customers now using web-to-print services. Both printers and customers acknowledge the benefits of web-to-print offering greater convenience, speed and cost efficiencies and it clearly offers business opportunities for providers. However there is still a lack of awareness, with 39% of customers remaining unaware of the availability of web-to-print services. Equally compelling is the opportunity to expand service offerings into non-print media to complement their existing print communications. Today, 68% of print buyers use multi-channel communications, a significant rise of 10% in just two years. Canon’s 2012 ‘Bigger Picture’ report also highlighted print being used in 94% of multi-channel campaigns, making it the foundation on which virtual media can then be deployed. By contrast, only 20% of all PSPs offer multi-channel campaign co-ordination, indicating a clear gap between the help that print buyers want and need in developing their multi-channel campaigns and what their PSPs currently offer. Perhaps one of the most interesting findings from the survey is that, despite 80% of commercial printers and CRDs recognising the need to change the way they operate, the majority still lack structured planning for the future. Only 48% of commercial printers and 32% of CRDs have a formal marketing or business development plan in place – and where one exists, only half review it on a regular basis. Commenting on the publication of Canon’s fifth Insight Report Building your future with Print, Andrew Harris, European & UK Professional Print Marketing Manager says, “This latest research has given us the opportunity to revisit trends and attitudes from some of our earlier Insight Reports, giving an invaluable picture of how the industry has developed over the past six years. More importantly, the findings provide compelling evidence that have been translated into meaningful recommendations which we hope will motivate and inspire our customers to build stronger, exceptional businesses for the future.” “Whilst there is much to be positive about in terms of the continued value of print amongst print buyers, there are still improvements that can be made by print service providers to capture further opportunities and establish even stronger links with their customers. Not only does the report outline a number of key recommendations for building a stronger future, it also gives an indication of the future skills that PSPs need to develop to deliver these new service offerings.” To obtain a copy of the full ‘2014 Insight Report – Building your future with print’, contact insight.report@cuk.canon.co.uk

Severn to Steer Proofing with StudioRIP Inkjet GLOUCESTER-BASED print and digital media house, Severn, has turned to Prepress UK in order to keep its Kodak Prinergy driven Epson large format printers producing ISO12647-2 certified proofs. The single StudioRIP Inkjet Edition software package is driving two Epson 7800 printers – and producing proofs at twice the speed of the original system. Some two years ago, Kodak, suppliers of hundreds-of-thousands of pounds worth of pre-press equipment to Severn, including its Prinergy workflow system, had advised the customer that it would no longer be supporting the Epson printer connection that it had originally provided. All continued well for a time, but when difficulties arose with the system, Production Manager Lyndon Murray had to act quickly. “I had known Nic Chapman [Prepress UK Sales Director] for many years, and approached him to ask if he would be able to help us in our “hour of need”,” said Lyndon. “I was amazed at how quickly Prepress UK were able to come to the rescue. From my initial contact with Nic, we had the solution installed and working within four days. “The StudioRIP Inkjet package not only solved our immediate problems, providing accurate, consistent colour proofs to ISO12647-2 standard, it actually speeded up the whole proofing process, with a 50% improvement in output speeds.” Severn hit the headlines earlier this year when the environmentally friendly print business installed one of Komori’s first B2 format H-UV presses, providing fast and efficient UV drying. Adding further thoughts on Prepress UK as a supplier, Lyndon Murray added: “The post installation support has also been extraordinary. We had an issue with getting an InDesign file through the system. We called the Prepress UK support line: they linked directly into the system, tweaked the software set-up, and within 20 minutes we were running the file. That’s what I call support!” Prepress UK’s Sales Director Nic Chapman, commenting on his company’s performance, added: “The big pre-press suppliers do sometimes have support issues with third party product that they have installed, but that’s where Prepress UK comes into its own. Our software engineers are more

than happy to recommend a system that will suit the customer’s needs and solve their day-to-day problems. Often, like with Severn, our expertise can get a system performing even better than the original configuration.” Andrew Aldridge, Technical Manager at Prepress UK, added: “Swift and effective support for pre-press products is as essential as a timely and efficient installation. If we can solve an issue by dialling into a system and tweaking the RIP settings then that is obviously the most beneficial solution for all concerned – for us, for the print business and, most importantly, for the printers customer – in terms of both cost and time.” www.prepressuk.com

New HP Designjet SD Pro Scanner FOR quick print professionals, reprographic houses as well as architectural, engineering, construction (AEC) and design firms, scanning is an important part of the design process, allowing teams working in a collaborative environment to review, edit and share multiple iterations of a plan. However, scanning largeformat prints can be time consuming, particularly when working with separate printers and scanners, and can disrupt the design workflow. Additionally, errors like colour fringing and unwanted shadows or backgrounds can appear in reproduced images, causing users to spend additional time re-scanning. The HP Designjet SD Pro Scanner features a new contact image sensor (CIS) technology with a dual-illuminating system and image enhancement software, helping users accurately reproduce detailed large-format documents at high speeds. Additionally, the HP Designjet Pro Scanner portfolio, which includes the HP Designjet SD Pro Scanner and the HP Designjet HD Pro Scanner introduced earlier, seamlessly integrates with existing HP Designjet printers, adding scanning and copying capabilities to streamline customers’ workflow and improve collaboration. “As we continue to see a rise in firm-to-firm collaboration within the AEC and design industries, our customers require scanning technologies that allow them to revise and share plans quickly without hassle,” said Alex Moñino, worldwide marketing director, Large Format Printing, HP. “The HP Designjet SD and HD Pro Scanners deliver fast and accurate large-format scanning and copying capabilities, helping customers accelerate their design process.” Built to meet the needs of demanding users, the HP Designjet SD and HD Pro Scanners scan at six inches per second for colour images and 13 inches per second for black and white images. Additionally, both scanners provide multipage PDF and scan to e-mail, USB and network capabilities, allowing

users to easily and quickly share images. Ideal for central reprographic departments (CRDs) and reprographic houses with needs for high-quality image reproduction of technical documents and maps, the HP Designjet SD Pro Scanner scans images up to 44 inches wide and reproduces colour and black-and-white images with resolutions of up to 1200 dots per inch (dpi). The scanner also has a nine-level adjustable stand, allowing users to place the device above their HP Designjet printer to save space. For geographic information system (GIS) professionals and CRDs that depend on high-precision reproduction of graphic artwork, maps, photos and technical drawings, the HP Designjet HD Pro Scanner offers high-definition document scanning, copying and image enhancement. The device scans images up to 42 inches wide from thick or rigid media and features charge coupled device (CCD) technology and an advanced five-camera system to capture complex data quickly without sacrificing details. The scanner also has adjustable legs, offering an ergonomic stand for optimal comfort. Both the HP Designjet SD and HD Pro Scanners allow users to preview and enhance images directly on a large 15.6-inch touchscreen all-in-one PC using enhancement software. The HP Designjet SD Pro Scanner is available worldwide with an estimated list price of £7,000.The HP Designjet HD Pro Scanner is currently available worldwide with an estimated list price of £13,200. www.hp.com

Mimaki new clear ink for JFX200 LED UV printer HYBRID Services Ltd, the UK and Ireland distributor for Mimaki has introduced LH-100 clear ink for the JFX200-2513 flatbed LED UV printer to complement the existing LUS -150 and LH-100 LED UV curable inksets. The new clear ink provides the capability to produce glossy and matte finish effects, adding creativity and value to the finished product. The addition of the new ink to the gamut delivers an effect close to that achieved traditionally in the lithographic print industry for many years with a spot varnish. Additionally, Mimaki clear ink can be output in multiple layers to enhance the vibrancy of colours or to create a more tactile finishing effect. Stuart Cole; national sales manager – industrial products for Hybrid, is excited about the potential of the new ink, “The new generation of flatbed LED UV printers are highly sophisticated and capable production machines that have been breaking new creative ground and the addition of this clear ink to the portfolio really takes the artistic and creative possibilities of the JFX200 to new levels.” Applications such as high end PoS, labels, textured finishes and even Braille are all now possible, presenting fantastic opportunities for companies involved in packaging proofing to deliver accurate simulations of finished products in a very efficient and timely manner, with the combination of LED UV ink curing creating a touch dry finish immediately after printing. Mimaki’s clear UV ink can be retro fitted to existing JFX200 machines with

only minor hardware upgrades needed. Users should ensure that they have the latest firmware (Version 1.30 or later) and version of Mimaki’s RIP (RasterLink 6 Version 2.10 or later). Additionally, one of Hybrid’s demonstration JFX200 printers will be commissioned with white and clear inks alongside the process colours to enable visitors to the showroom to compare the variety of configurations the machine is capable of. www.hybridservices.co.uk

Genix invests in UK’s first MTEX 5032Pro textile printer GENIX is a multidisciplinary agency providing print, creative and project management solutions. Its roots lie within the print industry and having worked for the past twenty five years with some of the best brand names around it has evolved and developed into a truly adaptable creative resource, supplying content to the market via numerous channels. “We are constantly striving to embrace new technologies and ideas and see continuation of this process as key to our future success,” said Genix Sales Director Andrew LeMaire. “That’s where the MTEX 5032Pro comes in. Soft imaging was the last wide format print technique that we didn’t have in our stable. We have UV but it isn’t the same - with the MTEX the material still feels like fabric without the stiffness of the UV, which simply lays the ink on the surface. “We knew the way forward a while ago but hadn’t been able to take this step until now as we needed to upgrade the size and accessibility of our production area.” Genix had been housed in a 8,500 square feet basement location in Soho, but in April expanded into a new production centre in Tottenham Hale with creative, project managers and client services run from their Audley House base in the centre of London. “Without the move we wouldn’t have been able to bring in a machine the size of the MTEX 5032Pro and even in the bigger premises the relatively small footprint of this particular machine

was one of the reasons that influenced the purchase,” added Andrew. “We wanted to expand our range with other new printing processes as well as textile, and we’ve also recently invested in a Latex printer. We originally saw the MTEX at Sign UK then went to FESPA specifically to have a better look. What swung it was the footprint being smaller thanks to the inbuilt calendar unit that we couldn’t get elsewhere. Even in our new premises space is at a premium.” Genix’s client base includes many end users and high quality brands which are very colour critical, and they need to manage colour over a range of printing disciplines. With the MTEX the team can start proofing the colour as soon as the material starts coming through the calendar unit, whereas with a second unit they would have to print the job and then test it. “Experience has taught us that the tensioning of the material when webbed for printing is crucial,

and once it’s loaded up you don’t really want to be disturbing it,” explains Andrew. The MTEX 5032Pro was installed in August and Genix has been running trials to ascertain shrink rates for different media and other variables before going live. It’s early days but so far they are happy and expect it to have a huge take up. “Soft signage is a real growth area and this machine will allow Genix to print graphics up to 3.2m wide to any length needed for both the exhibition and retail market,” added Stewart Bell, MD of MTEX Technologies. “We see a good outlook for the wide format market, that’s why making these investments — with the new MTEX we’ve now got in house aqueous, solvent, UV cured, latex and dye sub printing and we truly can offer our customers the complete solution,” concluded Andrew. For more information about MTEX go to www.mtex.eu or Genix go to www.genix.co.uk.

New Bright White Extension For Trucard SATISFYING the demands for ever whiter stocks, employee owned premium paper and board producers Tullis Russell has made its new bright white shade standard across the whole Trucard matt coated range. To promote the extended range, the company has produced a brochure to show the impressive results that can be achieved when using the new bright white coated stock. Using vibrant imagery of exotic birds, the brochure demonstrates the high image definition, great colour reproduction and ink lift achievable from Trucard bright white. The new shade is ideal for jobs that need to create an impression such as corporate communications, premium packaging and point of sale material. Malcolm Sinclair, export sales director at Tullis Russell, said: “As well as being one of the brightest whites available, Trucard matt bright white has excellent lightfastness giving printers real confidence that their products and publications will stand out from the crowd and look their best for longer. Another benefit, and when Trucard really comes into its own, is when it’s being used for multi-process print finishing, it’s capable of handling so many of the most demanding print finishing techniques.” The bright white shade is now available across Trucard 1 and 2 matt and offers an extended range of weights from 200g/m2 to 500g/m2 The whole range, both coated and uncoated, is FSC certified with many 50% post consumer waste

Cocoon shines brightly in Christmas campaign WITH the countdown to Christmas already underway, Antalis has launched a creative Christmas campaign targeting designers with the opportunity to win one of three crates of champagne. The campaign, which runs until 10th December features a mailer with die-cut star cards for the creative community to decorate in their own unique, personalised way with whatever theme and method they choose. Created by Stocks Taylor Benson, designers then punch-out, and interconnect the stars to complete their 3D star decorations – perfect for the office Christmas tree! By tweeting the hashtag #followthestar, the best illustrated decorations will have the opportunity to win one of three crates of champagne – perfect for a Christmas toast! The mailer is printed on Cocoon Offset and Silk and features a twist on the Christmas Carol ‘We Three Kings’, which has been cleverly penned to highlight the qualities of the brand - ‘Oh paper of wonder, paper so white, paper with recycled beauty and bright, environmental leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect printed sight.’ Cocoon, a range of 100% recycled FSC certified offset and coated papers, has the qualities and appearance of virgin fibre paper but with far superior environmental credentials. Natalie Thomas, Marketing Manager for Antalis

UK comments: “Not only is this campaign a great way to showcase the appearance and important environmental credentials of Cocoon, but it’s also a fun way for designers to get creative and interactive with the piece.” Neil Watts, Senior Designer, Stocks Taylor Benson, adds: “The idea for this mailer comes from the

Cocoon brand and material itself, being 100% recycled and pure white - it really is a paper of wonder. We wanted to create a piece that designers can play with and experience the qualities of the material, the star of wonder idea fits perfectly with Christmas – #followthestar!” For more information, visit www.antalis.co.uk

P&P LIVE 2015…an enhanced show Printwear & Promotion LIVE returns to the NEC Birmingham on 22nd-24th February 2015 and is the mustattend show for anyone looking to expand their business through garment and product decoration.

T

HE THREE DAY event brings all aspects of the industry together and provides the visitor with live demonstrations and advice on all aspects of garment and product decoration catering for those new to the industry, as well as the more experienced decorator. As well as the latest offerings in direct to garment, transfer and sublimation printing, embroidery and of course the latest garment styles, the P&P team is delighted to announce a number of exciting new features… P&P sales manager Tony Gardner explained the benefits of the brand new, user friendly website, which is compatible with all desktop and mobile devices: “The dedicated show website has been designed to provide both regular and prospective new visitors with an easier to navigate and complete source of reference for anything related to the show — in essence a much better pre-show experience! The Latest News section will keep visitors up to date on announcements from exhibitors and product launches and demos, whilst tabs detailing Show Features, the Seminar Programme and the Exhibitor Lists will prove particularly useful for helping visitors plan their must-sees and important points of call at the show.” The 2015 show will see the introduction of a CorelDRAW Theatre, where visitors will benefit from a wealth of information, advice, and live demonstrations that will enable them to go away and use the software to its full potential. 2015 also sees the return of the Bag Decoration Advice stand sponsored by Beechfield Brands, where visitors can watch live embroidery and transfer printing demonstrations. P&P LIVE 2015’s hugely popular and free to attend seminars will feature presentations from industry experts on all aspects of printwear production. The popular P&P LIVE fashion shows sponsored by Regatta are returning for the 2015 event, giving visitors the chance to catch up with new products and styles featured in the 2015 supplier catalogues in a lively and exciting way. A show app — designed to connect exhibitors and visitors — is in the pipeline, planned for launch in January 2015. This allows visitors to plan their day, scheduling in seminars, demonstrations and meetings with exhibitors, and allowing them to achieve the maximum from their time at the show. Printwear & Promotion LIVE is the ideal opportunity to see new technology and product launches and meet all of the major suppliers. Many exhibitors are using the show to announce new equipment and to show this year’s printwear styles for the first time. With 130 stands, over 90% of floor space already booked and leading industry names signed up, organiser Datateam Business Media is delighted with the ever growing support of the industry and the enhanced experience being provided for our visitors. FAVERSHAM House has confirmed that Sign & Digital UK is expanding its floor plan by one fifth following increasing exhibitor demand. The country’s leading trade exhibition for wide format digital printing, sign making and display solution industries opens its doors to visitors from 24 to 26 March 2015 at the NEC, Birmingham. With bookings up and the exhibition already 11% larger than the 2014 show, Sign & Digital UK 2015 will return with the new theme “Creating Business Connections” which will be explored through the show’s product demonstrations, theatre programmes and trails. 2015’s seminar line-up will feature a range of expert speakers, practical demonstrations and workshops to help industry professionals improve their business. The seminar schedules for the Corel, SignLab, Adobe and expanded business theatres will be announced in the coming weeks. In line with industry’s biggest market opportunities and emerging revenue streams, 2015’s trails will include the return of the Textile Trail and the first Retail Route and Materials World trails. A wide range of products and services will be highlighted within the trails, including textile printing and finishing systems, retail POP and POS display systems, and the very latest materials, media and substrates. Exhibitors confirmed to date include, Agfa Graphics, Amaya, Applelec, Art Systems, Atech, Blackman & White, CMYUK Digital, CWE Solutions, Grafityp, Hewlett-Packard, Inktec/Jetrix, Maxicam, Paperlinx UK, PrintMax, Perfect Colours, Colourgen, Hybrid Services/Mimaki, i-Sub, Resolute DTG, Soyang Europe, Ultima Displays, and many more. A full exhibitor list can be found at www.signanddigitaluk.com. Rudi Blackett, event director for Sign & Digital UK, said: ‘‘2015 will be Sign & Digital UK’s 28th year. With such a strong heritage and many regular and loyal visitors, next year’s show will demonstrate the event’s evolution with insight into new markets and business opportunities. We celebrated a fantastic exhibition in 2014, with high exhibitor and visitor numbers. The independent visitor research carried out post-show put Sign & Digital UK way ahead of the B2B exhibition industry benchmark for overall event satisfaction. “Of course, all of this means we have raised the bar and improving in 2015 will be even more challenging, something I know we can deliver given the expanded programme and the industry’s ongoing commitment and enthusiasm for Sign & Digital UK.” Sign & Digital UK is free to attend and you can register to visit at www. signanddigitaluk.com To enquire about exhibiting, please contact the show team on 01342 332000, or email signanddigitaluk@fav-house.com

YOU ARE ALL WINNERS WITH NO-MINIMUM’S EXTRA FREE PRIZE DRAW: SIGN UP AND WIN Quick Print Professionals have a new route to business with a FREE No-Minimum bespoke Ecommerce website, which gives retail print outlets everything they need to sell promotional products online with no minimum order quantities. No-Minimum has recently lowered set up costs and incorporated the reduced charge into the unit price. The new price model allows smaller print businesses to compete directly with e-retailers such as Vistaprint with commercially viable prices. Quick print professionals who open a NoMinimum trade account and launch a FREE No-Minimum bespoke website by Friday 16th January 2015 will qualify to enter a prize draw to win one of five Power Banks. Five winners will receive a voucher, redeemable via their NoMinimum website, to order a free power bank which can be personalised with photographic quality images. quick print professionals to offer consumers and small businesses a range of products for personalisation including iPhone and iPad cases, golf accessories, pens, keyrings and magnets. The bespoke sites have access to a wide range of copyright free images which customers can use to personalise or brand an item, although the site also recognises industry standard file formats such as EPS and JPG too. The image library contains thousands of images designed to provide a suitable symbol for every conceivable business type. The automatic invoice-less payment system maximises the potential revenue from small orders by reducing admin and overhead costs. Customers make a single credit card payment and the profit from the transaction is paid directly to the owner of the site. Setting up an account is free, quick and easy at https://retail.no-minimum.co.uk/accountrequest-form/. More information about how the bespoke sites work can be found at www.no-minimum.co.uk/bespoke.

22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | QUICK PRINT PRO | DECEMBER 2014-JANUARY 2015

Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?

It’s that time of year when the dreaded “C” word comes out as do all the old chestnuts to be toasted again. Martin Christie get’s all festive.

B

UT IN THE new digital economy is there any space for the traditional long Christmas holiday? There was a time when people accepted, even relished a long shut down. Many institutions still regard it as a normal break from things. But then there was a time when it was normal to be closed on Sunday and even Wednesday afternoons. The twenty-four-seven open for business culture seems to have been adopted selectively in the service industry. While some are expected to be on duty, others believe it their right to be an exception. The print on demand industry seems to be caught between the two. While larger firms may have the luxury of a week or more away, smaller outlets find the need to keep the door open for at least some of the time during the holiday. If some customers had their way we would be churning out print while eating a turkey sandwich on Christmas day. Then there is the opposite client who will disappear off for his or her long break leaving a vital decision on a job to their convenience when it will become a panic attack at the beginning of January. There is, it appears, no happy compromise despite if officially being the season of good will. Of course the on line ordering of goods has altered the regular weekly work schedule. Even if the counter keeps standard shop hours, the customers are operating in their own time zone,

and often expect instant order to result in instant print. Keeping ahead of that relentless pressure is a major issue because when the doors open on a Monday morning you have to juggle the priority between the customer who has just walked in, and the one who emailed just before midnight the day before. We have been monitoring some confusing trends in some print shops, in that several have started to reduce the hours open to the public, like not opening Saturday, for example, or opening later to deal with the electronic input first. Some, we hear, have even stopped offering a same day print service. The latter would seem to be completely against the whole reason for the traditional copy shop. Moreover, the ability to deliver print quickly is surely one of the major advantages on site production has against the fierce price competition from internet based outlets. One of the reasons may be that some operations are reducing overheads in staff and equipment by printing off site and hence can’t handle immediate work flow. This is perhaps understandable in a market place that is still highly cost conscious, but is risky long term in that it is well established practise that a satisfied client generates future profit. Another reason, and one that affects every print shop, is that the very nature of work now coming in, whether over the counter or down the line, is much more complex and not always able to be

sorted immediately. We may be print on demand but we cannot always be instant print. Apart from any issues with the files which are often not ready to print, there is a very valid reason for caution, rather than rush to service every customer demand in printing. The potential for error and misunderstanding has massively increased by the problems caused by apparent instant communication. Do you respond, for example, to an email requesting urgent print to be collected, only to receive a further message with amendments or even cancellation? Then there is the inevitable query that gets no response. Does customers ever pick up a message left on a mobile phone? Even with email, where at least half of the traffic is now received on the small screen of a mobile device, it is very easy for even the simplest request to be read wrong. The old adage that anything that can go wrong will go wrong has never been more true, and a piece of cautionary advice to anyone who thinks that the consequences of all this technology are always positive. The point of concern for the print shop is who bears the cost of the mistakes and the wastage, when the exchange of instruction is no longer the direct conversation with a customer over the counter, but batted around in cyber space. As another year turns in the digital economy, and Santa delivers even more smart devices for people to play with, it is unlikely that the New Year will bring any solutions to this dilemma. Following on from last month’s advice on using Adobe Bridge as an organising and cataloguing programme, another little used tool in the creative stable is Lightroom. This wasn’t included in the original suite and was a separate download. Now it is available as a rental package along with Photoshop. The two are complimentary, in that they tackle similar jobs in quite a different way and understanding when to use one rather than the other is a really useful skill in handling digital images. Photoshop itself seems to be less used in the print shop than it was now that many customers provide images they have edited themselves, but still remains the most powerful tool for creating and manipulating pixel based files. It has developed over the years into a very sophisticated package utilising multiple layers, and able to combine vector files in shapes and fonts, as well as now three dimensional visualisations. Adobe Lightroom isn’t a simpler version of

DECEMBER 2014-JANUARY 2015 | QUICK PRINT PRO | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23

Photoshop. That is Adobe Elements, which is packed as a starter kit with many cameras and scanners now. That enables the owner to get a good start in image capture and editing and has many features that are also on the flagship version. Lightroom is actually entirely different and was developed separately as Adobe realised that the current Photoshop had long left the realms of basic photography and was becoming too unwieldy for some of the more basic but essential tasks. The way it works, and what it does, is quite different from Photoshop, but the two can be used in conjunction to get the best of both systems. Lightroom is entirely pixel based, so can’t handle vectors or PDFs. It can handle Jpegs, Tiffs and the like, and is the best way of tackling multiple digital images. The way it does this is not by opening them, but importing them as a batch so that they can then be sorted and edited. These are placed in what is called the Library mode, where they are displayed as small thumbnails, and or as full sized pictures. Items imported can be copied and saved without affecting the original file source, and removed from the library view without deleting them from the disc. The library view has basic edit functions in colour, contrast and so on, and if chosen these can be passed on to all or selected files in the library by the synchronisation tab which has the option of individual functions to share. This is similar too but much simpler than batch processing an action in Photoshop. If the basic edit in Library mode is not enough, you select the next step which is Develop which opens a much more sophisticated toolbox of functions that mimic a traditional darkroom. These tools dig deep into the digital information contained in the image and are able to make major or minor adjustments which can dramatically or subtley change its appearance, and it does this by the use of sliders controlling colour balance, exposure, contrast etc. All these features are available in Photoshop, but are too cumbersome to handle more than one image at a time. The beauty of Lightroom is that it can deal with an entire catalogue and apply the same adjustments to similar images, as well as giving a real time before and after view so that you can monitor changes you are about to make. And I say about to make because Lightroom is classified as non-destructive in that it does not affect the original files. Changes are only applied by exporting the choices with the alterations to an alternative folder or catalogue. Because it is non destructive you can undo any action applied to the image at any stage, unlike the linear history in Photoshop where going back

vivid-online.com

may delete some things you wanted to save. Swopping back into Photoshop to take advantage of the good things like layers and text is just a right click away, so you haven’t lost any features, just gained a speedier workflow. The whole dashboard visuals and controls gives the user a comprehensive command of the whole job, which is why I took to it so well as a photographer schooled in the darkroom rather than the computer. It may seem initially alien to someone trained in Photoshop, but is worth the effort to get to know and use it to your advantage. As a photographer, Lightroom has vastly increased my understanding of how digital images are composed, as well as my ability to manipulate them, just as before with film experience with processing greatly helped actual shooting. That’s why so many photographers have taken to using the programme, but there is every reason why it should be a common tool in the digital studio as so many jobs involve handling multiple image files, often from customers memory cards or sticks. In terms of organising files, as with Bridge, colour codes, tags and extra keywords can be added to prune the Library view to a selection, or help search for the particular items. From the Library, selected files can be exported as Jpegs, Tiffs or Digital Negatives, retitled or redirected as required. There is a Slideshow function for viewing the library, and also a Book, which has standard layouts for multipage photobooks, and from which book designs can be uploaded. There is also a web gallery function that will arrange files and title into any of several basic or custom pages for on line viewing.

But the most useful of the last functions is the Print one, which can handle all selected files as a batch, arrange them in a number of standard templates, or create any combination of custom ones depending on page dimensions. As a result, it is a little more complicated than your standard press and print, but again, if dealing with lots of images, is a time saver, especially compared to opening files individually in Photoshop, or laying them up in InDesign. Standard layouts like four A6 on an A4 or two A5s can be saved as well as actual printer settings for particular printers, and new images quickly imported into them. The one thing you have to remember is to check the saved settings in any template in case they are not the ones you want to use. The page settings are on the left side of the control panel, on the left are the actual print settings you chose so you just need to be sure the two don’t produce a conflict. But layout, margins and sizes as well as rotation are all on screen with guides and rulers, and all can be fine tuned. It can be a little fiddly but usually the issue is between the saved page size or orientation and the desired layout. One neat trick is if you need to print two or more of a particular image in a batch – something that can be a pain otherwise – you can create what is called a virtual copy which just duplicates the file in the print folder and adds it to the print queue. There’s plenty of help on line with Lightroom, including video tutorials from Adobe and other helpful user forums so if you find yourself at a loose end waiting for the Christmas rush, you can sit down to them rather than watch The Great Escape for the fifteenth time. More next year.

SOMERSET based Parkins Interiors was founded in 2010 by husband and wife team Chris and Rachael Parkins who have a keen sense of interior design and a passion for innovative and stylish products. The company now employs six people and has grown into one of the UK’s leading suppliers of wall stickers and accessories geared towards the domestic market. Crafted to order from premium quality matt finish vinyl, the expansive range of products can be used to decorate any interior environment, with a particular niche in children’s bedroom décor; its wall stickers featuring trees and wildlife are available from Parkins Interiors own website (www.parkinsinteriors.com), alongside the online shop Not On The High Street and a selection of other online retailers. The company decided to upgrade to the HP Latex 360 from Stanford Marsh Group Graphics (SMGG) in August 2014 in order to boost its productivity and expand its offering. Chris Parkins, co-founder of Parkins Interiors explains: “I found SMGG online whilst searching for a solution to our printing needs. Much of our work involves the creation of stickers for children’s rooms and therefore eco-solvent was out of the question due to the long gassing out process and the solvent elements of the ink. “Similarly, aqueous printers were not up to the challenge as the prints were not durable and would not stand up to sticky fingers. We wanted a printer which could produce durable, scratch-resistant prints that would stand up to toddlers! We needed an alternative solution and SMGG came up with the amazing new HP Latex range.” Parkins Interiors currently prints onto self-adhesive vinyl to produce wall stickers, while developing a mural and wallpaper range with a view to selling the products wholesale to other retailers. In addition, by running HP Latex inks the company can now take advantage of extra durability, media diversity and quality. “What’s great is the print is suitable for outdoor applications – thereby affording our business greater opportunities in the future,” says Chris. “Furthermore, there is a huge range of suitable media for these inks and the print quality is far greater than the equivalent eco-solvent or solvent printers.” Thanks to its green credentials, the HP Latex 360’s printed output can enter post-production without any lengthy out-gassing period and creates a healthier production environment. On working with SMGG, Chris states: “SMGG has been great throughout the whole process. From the initial advice from Steve Guest, who wholeheartedly stood behind the product, to the demonstration of the equipment, through to installation and software demonstration. It was refreshing to encounter a sales representative with such enthusiasm for the product and this carried a lot of weight in our final decision to purchase. “Plus, on an ongoing basis, the company is always happy to take my calls and offer suggestions. We eventually see ourselves purchasing a second HP Latex printer and have already invested in two further vinyl cutters from SMGG to keep up with demand.” www.parkinsinteriors.com

AeroCut Interview

Sakura Seiki is a factory located on the outskirts of Osaka, the second largest city in Japan. Since its establishment a half century ago Sakura Seiki has been an exclusive manufacturing plant for Uchida.

T

HE MARKET INSPIRING Uchida AeroCut series of multifunction cutting and creasing machines for the digital finishing market was designed and created here by a very special team of people. The Aerocut has received acclaim from all over the world, so what has made it so successful? The Director of Product Development, Mr. Tsubakihara answers: “Our goal when we started, was that we wanted to design the AeroCut with an ‘easy and totally intuitive operation’ as well as giving a professional output from the machine.” The Manager of the Electrical designing team, Mr. Monno says: “Its user interface needed to be like the ones for office equipment – easy to understand. To design the AeroCut as a machine that anyone can produce even the most complex jobs after one hour training was one of our important aims, and we think it was successful. We believe that this easy operation ends up improving our customers’ productivity and their satisfaction.” The manager of the Mechanical Design team, Mr. Takada added, “Although the AeroCut is a multifunction machine that can be operated easily, we thought each element of its work has to be as good as those from single-function machines – like paper guillotines, creasers and perforators. Plus, durability is a major key for such a production machine. This is why, not only is it equipped with self-sharpening blades, but also it is designed as a module based ‘serviceman-friendly’ machine that can recover quickly from unexpected stops.” Mr. Tsubakihara says: “Initially in the prototype stage, we really struggled to keep certain consistencies and accuracy. What we realised is that paper is a living thing, especially when it’s printed. Even one degree difference in the angle of the cutter, ends up with a different result. We checked and challenged the machines design, materials and

accuracy of every single part and changed and adjusted, repeated and tested again and again, then finally came up with results that we could be satisfied with.” To guarantee the accuracy and ensure perfect finishing, factory workers assemble and adjust machines diligently. The Manager of Assembling section, Mr. Koga says: “Although we make a manual, special jigs and tools to keep the highest

quality standards, some processes such as slitter unit assembly, accuracy adjustment etc. are only done by skilled engineers. These are essential processes to keep the quality that can ensure unrivalled accuracy and professional looking output. The engineers are proud of their job, engineering and craftsmanship. For example, they adjust the trapezium screw which is used to make the slitter unit movable, to have its

tolerance within +-0.02mm with the help of specially made jigs and tools. To prevent too much play on the slitter unit, they choose a slitter block and a slitter shaft to compensate the tolerances of each other. Also, they make fine adjustments with the angle of the feed table and the paper guide so their tolerance becomes less than +-0.05mm. We set the strictest quality standards, and to make sure, all the machines are tested carefully before delivery by a senior engineer.” It is Japanese engineering and craftsmanship that ensures AeroCut’s extreme accuracy. They respect their jobs and are very proud of what they make, but are never arrogant. Mr. Tsubakihara looks back and says: “Five years ago we launched the first AeroCut .Since then we have developed the flagship model AeroCut Quatro which we showed for the first time at drupa 2012 and now we have added the entry model AeroCut nano to our lineup as we showed during IPEX 2014. We must say that, in the beginning, we didn’t know so much about what the real users wanted. During the last five years, we have visited and talked with many users all over the world. We are convinced that as we understand the users needs better, we have made the machine better and better. Now we must stay close to the users to know what jobs they have to do and what they really want in order to develop professional products whilst trends are rapidly changing.” “We started our business as a manufacturer of science experimental instruments in 1948. From the beginning, the idea of making the world better through manufacturing safe and reliable products underlies the whole factory. Based on this policy, we will keep on striving to improve our products - even one small part. We always appreciate any users’ comments about our products. This helps us realise what we need to do to make the products even better.” Call 0800 915 4263 contact@uchida.uk.com www.uchida.uk.com

SALES BLITZ It was snowing heavily and blowing to the point that visibility was almost zero when the little saleslady got off work. She made her way to her car and wondered how she was going to make it home. She sat in her car while it warmed up and thought about her situation. She finally remembered her daddy’s advice that if she got caught in a blizzard; she should wait for a snow plough to come by and follow it. That way she would not get stuck in a snowdrift. This made her feel much better and sure enough in a little while a snow plough went by and she started to follow it. As she follows the snow plough she was feeling very smug as they continued and she was not having any problem with the blizzard conditions. After quite sometime had passed she was somewhat surprised when the snow plough stopped and the driver got out and came back to her car and signalled for her to roll down her window. The snow plough driver wanted to know if she was all right as she had been following him for a long time. She said that she was fine and told him of her daddy’s advice to follow a snow plough when caught in a blizzard. The driver replied that it was OK with him and she could continue if she wanted but he was done with the Asda car park and was going over to Sainsbury’s next.

FAMILY CHRISTMAS An elderly man in Ft. Myers, Florida calls his son in New York and says, ‘I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-eight years of misery is enough.’ ‘Pop, what are you talking about?’ the son screams. ‘We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,’ the old man says. ‘We’re sick of each other, and I’m sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Ohio and tell her,’ and he hangs up. Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. ‘Like heck they’re getting divorced,’ she shouts, ‘I’ll take care of this.’ She calls Ft. Myers immediately, and screams at the old man, ‘You are NOT getting divorced. Don’t do a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my brother back, and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?’ and hangs up. The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. ‘Okay,’ he says, ‘They’re coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own air fares... Now what do we tell them for Christmas.

complete cow, she nags non-stop and puts me down every chance she gets.’ Doc: ‘That sounds stressful.’ Man: ‘Yeah, but I’m leaving her and I’ve never been happier.’ Doc: ‘Umm ... what about your social life?’ Man: ‘Social life? I don’t really have one.’ Doc: ‘Really? What do you do in your spare time?’ Man: ‘Watch beach volleyball and eat Wotsits.’

16 REASONS WHY ALCOHOL SHOULD BE SERVED AT WORK... 1. It’s an incentive to show up. 2. It leads to more honest communications. 3. Employees tell management what they think, not what management wants to hear. 4. It encourages car sharing. 5. Increase job satisfaction because if you have a bad job, you don’t care. 6. It eliminates holiday leave because people would rather come to work. 7. It makes fellow employees look better. 8. It makes the canteen food taste better. 9. Bosses are more likely to hand out raises when they are plastered. 10. Salary negotiations are a lot more profitable. 11. Employees work later since there’s no longer a need to relax at the pub. 12. It makes everyone more open with their ideas. 13. Eliminates the need for employees to get drunk on their lunch break. 14. Increases the chance of seeing your workmates naked. 15. Employees no longer need coffee to sober up. 16. Sitting ‘Bare Bum’ on the copy machine will no longer be seen as ‘gross’.

A woman was picking over the last few remaining turkeys looking for a large one.

GOOD JUDGE A woman was arrested for shop lifting. When she went before the judge he asked her, “What did you steal?” She replied: “a can of peaches.” The judge asked her why she had stolen them and she replied that she was hungry. The judge then asked her how many peaches were in the can. She replied, five. The judge then said, “I will give you five days in jail.” Before the judge could actually pronounce the punishment the woman’s husband spoke up and asked the judge if he could say something. The judge said, “What is it?” The husband said, “She also stole a can of peas.”

CHOPPING BLOCK There was this little guy sitting in a bar, drinking his beer, minding his own business when all of a sudden this great big dude comes in and -- WHACK!! -- knocks him off the bar stool and onto the floor. The big dude says, “That was a karate chop from Korea.” The little guy thinks “GEEZ,” but he gets back up on the stool and starts drinking again when all of a sudden -- WHACK!! -- the big dude knocks him down AGAIN and says, “That was a judo chop from Japan.” So the little guy has had enough of this... He gets up, brushes himself off and quietly leaves. The little guy is gone for an hour or so when he returned. Without saying a word, he walks up behind the big dude and -- WHAM!!!” -- knocks the big dude off his stool, knocking him out cold!!! The little guy looks at the bartender and says, “When he gets up, tell him that’s a paper chop from my guillotine blade.

WHY MY CAREER TURNED TO COPYING When I was young I decided to go to medical school. At our first exam we were asked to rearrange the letters PNEIS to form the name of an important human body part that was most useful when erect.

She shouted over to a shop assistant, “Excuse me. Do these turkeys get any bigger?”

Those who answered spine are probably doctors now. The rest of us are sending jokes into QPP readers scribes.

A JOKE FOR ALL AGES For those not over 40 - something to look forward to! 1. Kidnappers are not very interested in you. 2. In a hostage situation you are likely to be released first. 3. No one expects you to run into a burning building. 4. People call at 9 PM and ask, ‘Did I wake you?’ 5. People no longer view you as a hypochondriac. 6. There is nothing left to learn the hard way. 7. Things you buy now won’t wear out. 8. You can eat dinner at 4 P.M. 9. You can live without sex but not without glasses. 10. You enjoy hearing about other peoples operations. 11. You get into heated arguments about pension plans. 12. You have a party and the neighbours don’t even realise it. 13. You no longer think of speed limits as a challenge. 14. You quit trying to hold your stomach in, no matter who walks into the room. 15. You sing along with elevator music. 16. Your eyes won’t get much worse. 17. Your investment in health insurance is finally beginning to pay off. 18. Your joints are more accurate meteorologists than the national Weather service. 19. Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can’t remember them either. 20. Your supply of brain cells is finally down to manageable size. 21. You can’t remember who sent you this list.

“No” he replied, “They’re all dead”.
