Xerox Connects Physical and Digital Worlds New Xerox Corporation printing technology, workflow software and personalisation solutions were unveiled at PRINT 18 showcasing innovative ways to bridge the physical and digital worlds so businesses can grow and succeed in the competitive graphic communications market. Xerox is introducing two new features for the Xerox Iridesse® Production Press — High Definition Emulsion Aggregate (HD EA) white dry ink and extra-long sheet sizes. The Xerox Iridesse Production Press launched in May 2018 as the first digital press that can print CMYK and up to two speciality colours in a single pass at 120 ppm with spot-on registration. With the new HD EA white dry ink, print providers can apply special spot effects to transform ordinary printed pieces into ones with a unique physical look and feel. It can be layered under or over CMYK — or both for double impact — on a wider range of media including black, transparent or metallic stocks, craft paper, and synthetics and polys. Additionally, the press can print on extra-long sheets up to 330mm x 1200mm and can autoduplex extra-long sheets up to 729mm long. This makes it possible to do a tri-fold brochure that folds to A4 — useful for marketing collateral like menus, product and real estate brochures. Highly effective, personalised cross-media — XMPie® Circle PersonalEffect® Edition, a
software as a service solution for managing your multichannel marketing campaigns, was on display. With this software for automating the deployment of print and digital touchpoints, users can also track results and find out which messages are working best with which people, in which context and in which media. Adobe Sign will also be integrated into the PersonalEffect platform, so customers can add fully-automated electronic signature workflows to their personalised, omni-channel customer communications campaigns. XMPie PersonalEffect users can now create fully interactive personalised PDFs including buttons and other interactive elements used for form navigation and calls to action. Output, flexibility and applications boost for Brenva HD — The Xerox Brenva® HD Production Press now has a 40 per cent increase in output capacity, expanded stock
choices and a roll feed capability for continuous operation. For customers, it creates new ways to print more jobs faster, which is essential for books and manuals, and transactional jobs. Renz biggest ever multiple machine order Renz has completed delivery of its biggest ever multiple machine UK order — 450 calendar binding kits for Max Spielmann. Max Spielmann was founded by Bill Graham and his business partner David Reed in the 1950s and owned by the Wirral-based Graham family for 50 years. In 2008 it was acquired by the Timpson Group. Today, there are over 450 stores throughout the UK. Ivan Sestan, Innovation Director, explains the group’s decision to enable in-store on demand calendar production: “For the past five years we have printed calendars at our central production site but there are big peaks in October, November and December. We thought we could improve the service to our customers by distributing the production to the point of sale. “We explored the best way this could be achieved. We found the calendar binding line from Renz was quick and easy to install, simple to use and assured a high-quality product. Reliability was critical as well and we liked the fact there is good ongoing support.” Each binding kit consists of a Renz SRW 360 table-top wire binder, a Renz TC20 calendar thumb cut punch, 100 wires and 100 hangers. “We trialled it for four months and were very pleased with the results,” continues Sestan. “We chose to roll the same lines out throughout the
stores because we didn’t want to have to support and train multiple solutions and wanted product consistency for all our customers. The last lines have just gone in and are ready for this festive season’s busy period.” As for choosing the Renz solutions Sestan explains: “We already worked with larger Renz machines in our central production. They are consistently reliable and produce a very high quality. So that made it easy to speak to Renz about our plans for the stores. They knew we also wanted compact, easy-to-use machines that could be introduced smoothly and efficiently meet the peak demands. “Also, the fact we already had a good working relationship with Renz gives us peace of mind. We know we can access expert advice, guidance and support when we need it. This will help us be confident that we can deliver consistent results from store to store.” The production process at Max Spielmann is supported by an online ordering service that enables an order to receipt production of just an hour. As for the expected impact of this new approach, it is still early days but Sestan states: “We believe this will help us grow sales because we can provide a more responsive and faster turnaround service. We are adding additional opportunities such as photobooks, documents, dissertations, CVs and orders of service.” www.renz.co.uk

Deep and The Royal Hospital Chelsea Matt Shelley, Design Director at Deep an independent London-based brand, design and digital agency, shares insight into the process of creating a printed homage to a generation of second world war Army veterans… Deep was commissioned to deliver a completely new design and branding concept for the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the home of Chelsea Pensioners. The Chelsea Pensioners are ambassadors for the positive possibilities of old age. The Royal Hospital Chelsea provides a home for the ex-army veterans, but also a great sense of community, purpose and pride. Donations contribute to accommodating the 300 army veterans and enabling the charity, ceremonial and community outreach activities they take part in. We’ve been working with the Royal Hospital for around 18 months now. We wanted to bring public understanding of the Chelsea Hospital up to date and raise awareness of the continued contribution Chelsea Pensioners make to society, but also dig deeper into the individuals and champion their personal stories. As part of this we developed a new concept for a brochure which was distributed at Chelsea Flower Show to raise awareness of the hospital and support with fundraising. From WW2 Enigma Code breakers to D-Day veterans, the brochure shares the experiences of four of the Chelsea Pensioners living at Chelsea Hospital alongside striking photography portraits. Inspired by the iconic Chelsea Pensioner red uniform, the brochure design uses vertical accents to mimic their medal ribbons, while bold block colour printing replicates the rigid design of military ID cards and stamps. The brochure was an opportunity to connect more emotionally and persuasively with the audience, to tell the stories behind the uniforms and create a personal connection between the reader and the Pensioners. Our choice of printed materials played a huge role in achieving this. We chose Arjowiggins Graphic’s 100% recycled CyclusOffset paper because we wanted the magazine to be tactile and to create a more personal
experience for the reader. Printed by DG3 Leycol, CyclusOffset paper has a really unique texture and feel, whilst delivering high quality colour printing which reproduced really well, especially the bold red and blacks and the foiled font on the cover. www.deep.co.uk
Whitworth completes challenges for Joining Jack Jonathan Whitworth, Managing Director of DSales, the UK distributor for the Develop range of multifunctional document imaging systems, has completed four major fundraising events during 2018 in aid of Joining Jack, a charity which funds awareness and research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and is the chosen charity partner of DSales. The fundraising campaign began with the Run Wigan Festival, held over five kilometres in mid-March. However, extreme weather prevented Jonathan getting to Wigan so, undeterred, he braved the Yorkshire snows to complete the 5K distance closer to home. In July Jonathan took part in the 50 mile Wigan Bike Ride, for which DSales is also the principal sponsor. At the end of July Jonathan participated in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge completing the 25 mile route over three peaks of around 700 metres each: Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. Finally in September Jonathan took on the Wigan 10K run, together with his DSales colleagues Glenn Kershaw and Dean Ranton. After completing the route, Jonathan literally joined Jack and his parents at the finish line. Jonathan stated, “It’s not been easy taking on this year’s challenges but it’s all been in aid of an excellent cause. I would like to thank all who donated to the cause through my JustGiving page for their generosity. Duchenne is a terrible muscle wasting disease and if we can bring a cure one day closer it’s all been worth it.” Donations can still be made at: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jonathan-whitworth6 Learn more about the work of the Joining Jack charity at: www.joiningjack.org www.dsales.eu

Roland and Renault Sport make dreams come true At this year’s Sign and Digital UK, Roland DG showed up in force with a stunning range of print technologies for every kind of print professional. But that’s not all they brought — in partnership with Renault Sport Formula One™ Team, they were also able to offer guests the opportunity to win a selection of F1 experiences. Jayne Barton of Sign My Ride UK took the bronze medal and enjoyed a VIP Enstone Technical Centre Discovery experience. Renault Sport Formula One™ Team Technical Centre, hidden away in the Cotswolds, is the hub of the team’s chassis design and manufacturing. In a highly-competitive industry, top engineers work behind closed doors on prototypes for the next generation of F1 cars and as such, the area is strictly off limits to visitors. “People can’t just walk in here and take a tour”, says Joe McNamara, Head of Graphics, “it just doesn’t happen.” Jayne got to look behind the scenes of one of the giants of motorsport and see the enormous amount of work that goes into creating the
fastest cars in the world. “We had an amazing day and would love to go back again,” said Jayne, “Joe was the perfect host he showed us everything.” Tim Douglas of Moto Graphix took the second prize and got the chance to attend the British Grand Prix up the road in Silverstone. The Renault Sport Formula One™ Team F1 cars that whizzed past him at 200mph weren’t just adorned with stickers printed on the Roland TrueVIS VG-640 — there was more under the surface. A percentage of the car’s bodywork is made of Rohacell®, a rigid, lightweight foam that forms the supportive cores for various components. Each of these cores is milled to precision on
one of four MDX-540 milling machines by Roland. The winner of the grand prize, Lakhvir Sahota, got to see Renault Sport Formula One™ Team in action, this time in the Hungarian Grand Prix. Lakhvir admitted that he wasn’t really a fan of F1 before travelling to Hungary but that didn’t mean he didn’t enjoy himself. Besides getting the chance to see the race, he also got a behind-the-scenes tour courtesy of the team. He also had a photo opportunity with Renault Sport Formula One™ Team driver, Nico Hülkenberg. Thanks to his experience, he now has enough Formula One knowledge to compete with any super-fan. Looking back on Sign and Digital UK, Roland are glad to have showcased their wide portfolio of products and are also thrilled with the response to the competition. Now that the winners have claimed their prizes, they’re even more happy to have helped give some Formula One fans experiences that they won’t forget. www.rolanddg.co.uk
Fast Response at The Print & Design Factory Sheffield full service print specialist The Print & Design Factory has created a short run fast turnaround post production service with a Horizon SPF-200A highly automated bookletmaker with twin-tower 20 station tower collators and a Horizon PF-40L automated folder from IFS. Established 20 years ago, the operation produces a wide array of general commercial print for local and national clients. It completes litho print on a five colour S2 Sakurai, a two colour Heidelberg SpeedMaster 52 and digital print on a Xerox Versant 180 and Xerox C60. Commercial Manager Craig Ikin joined The Print & Design Factory three years ago when a number of printing operations were merged together to form the current business. He explains: “I was running Eastland Colour in Manchester and was asked by the management team to look at the way the combined company was operating. After reviewing the end-to-end process one of the main areas that needed updating was the booklet production.” The Horizon SPF-200A and Horizon PF-40L replace a MBO B26 all buckle fold unit and a Muller Martini saddlestitcher and Ikin says: “We were taking too long to complete runs and sending work out. We needed a solution that was faster and more cost effective.” As for choosing the Horizon systems he explains: “I had used Horizon systems before and knew how well they ran and how high the quality of the work was that they produced. We also saw them in action at trade finisher Leeds Die Cutting and if it’s good enough for them then it’s good enough for us.” He adds: “We did think about buying second hand but after considering the long term plan we decided that the slight cost difference was worth all the production gains.”
The highly automated Horizon SPF/FC-200A is capable of producing 4,500bph. The JDFready system offers instant setups via a large icon-based colour touchscreen for user-friendly operation. The screen can be used for on-the-run fine tune adjustments as well as the store and recall of up to 200 jobs. The PF-40L combines high-volume suction feed capabilities with intelligent automation. The 1,000 sheet capacity top-fed system is the same suction feed system used on the highly popular VAC Collators. Its push-button control panel enables any user to set-up for the six most popular fold patterns of standard cut-sheet sizes. The paper size range for the PF-40L is from 5” x 5” to 12.6” x 24.8” and thicknesses from 50gsm to 90gsm cover without requiring pre-scoring or creasing. Memory capacity allows for easy programming of ten unique fold patterns and/or non-standard sheet sizes to be recalled at any time. Ikin continues: “Now one operator runs both systems as they are so easy to set up. For example, we took a job on yesterday for first thing Tuesday. We would have normally ended up working over the weekend but with the new equipment this was done in the day. “We can confidently say yes to jobs knowing that they will be completed quickly. Scheduling work is easier too. This means we can take on more work than we would have done in the past. Both systems have also freed up a lot of floor space.” www.ifsl.uk.com

Minuteman Press Cardiff Bay purchase Vivid Matrix Cardiff based, digital print specialist Minuteman Press recently purchased a Vivid Matrix MX-370P for their lamination requirements. In a recent interview with Vivid’s marketing team Branch Manager, Louise Williams, explained how the purchase had come about and how the foiling and effects capability quickly opened new opportunities for them: VIVID: Louise, can you give an overview of your operation: MINUTEMAN: Minuteman Press is predominantly a business-to-business print facility based in Cardiff, which is known for being a centre for design and creative services. We are ideally located to serve businesses there as well as in the surrounding area. We are a dedicated team, built on a strong foundation of expertise within the print and design industry, with many years experience in this sector. We pride ourselves on our professional friendly service, offering an efficient and prompt response, ensuring that your needs are met on time and within budget. Top quality, quick turnaround and great service is the minimum you can expect from us! VIVID: How does the Matrix sit amongst your other equipment? MINUTEMAN: We run three digital presses and using the Matrix for laminating and foiling in conjunction with these was easy. VIVID: Why was the Vivid system chosen? MINUTEMAN: Primarily we were looking for a higher quality, faster laminator, as we had outgrown our current one. We visited The Print Show and saw several options, but we were most impressed by the Vivid Matrix MX-370P, as it was mainly built in the UK, and, productionwise, it is quick and easy to use. That the Matrix had an added bonus of supporting foiling as well as lamination was something we were already interested in after seeing a machine the year before. Overall, the Matrix offered outstanding value for money. Vivid: What applications has the Matrix been used for? Minuteman: Lamination is still the machine’s main function, allowing us to keep more work in-house, giving much higher added value. However, the machine has also opened new doors with the various foiling options that it supports.
VIVID: And what is your favourite effect so far? MINUTEMAN: We love the gold foil on cream card, it is especially popular for invitations and we have just ordered rose gold foil that has been described as ‘lush’! We are looking forward to expanding our collection of foils and are especially keen to try out the holographic films! VIVID: In summary what would you say about the Matrix? MINUTEMAN: This machine has enabled us to laminate a higher volume of work in-house much more efficiently, meaning we can turn jobs around faster, increasing our capacity and efficiency and pass savings onto our customers. It has additionally enabled us to offer foiling, a luxury finish with a highperceived value, at an affordable price. The foil really does make the print stand out and many of our customers are now placing foil orders, even those who never knew they wanted it until seeing our samples! We are able to help support local independent businesses who use the foil for postcards and stationery. VIVID: Anything else you would like to add? MINUTEMAN: We really love the Matrix, and would thoroughly recommend it to anybody, laminating is a breeze and, as it is pneumatic, non-digital films can also be used. Foiling is slightly trickier but Vivid provided full training and the results make it 100% worth the effort. If you purchase this machine you will be happy with your decision, we are sure of that! www.vivid-online.com
Triple Bindery investment for Park Lane Press The Corsham, Wiltshire, operation has invested in a 4X4 B2+ Foliant Mercury 530SF laminator, a Horizon BQ470 four-clamp perfect binder and a Horizon HT30C Trimmer from Intelligent Finishing Systems. Phil Sudwell, Managing Director, explains: “We wanted a system that could laminate both sides in one pass, and in particular, handle light material. We had an older laminator but it was slow and it was time to reinvest.” Among the key benefits of the 4X4 25mpm B2+ Mercury 530SF heavy-duty industrial laminating system for Park Lane Press is its tighter registration and its Heidelberg suction feeder. He continues: “This investment is something we should have done a long time ago. The machines are so much easier to operate. Our team is very happy.” www.ifsl.uk.com

Durst’s Tau 330 RSC Label Press at Labmak Durst has announced that The Label Makers in the UK has successfully completed beta testing of its new digital, high speed, eight-colour Tau 330 RSC Label Press. The pioneering company from Bradford, Yorkshire, chose the machine to keep it ahead of the curve and is now expanding into new and developing markets. After winning major new contracts including a six-figure deal with a major food brand during beta testing, the company, known as Labmak, is now looking to invest in a second new Tau 330 RSC UV inkjet.. “It’s unbelievable photographic quality,” said David Webster, Managing Director of Labmak. “The future of label production is here — and it’s inkjet. Installing the Tau 330 RSC has been a huge step forward for us. It has massively grown from our original expectations and we now have three Durst machines.” He expanded: “This press runs at a phenomenal printing speed of 78m a minute all the time with no slowing down, virtually no waste and is litho quality with a print resolution of 1200x1200dpi. Plus, the addition of the extra colour green means we can cover 98% of Pantone shades. The Durst Tau 330 RSC is also much more cost-effective because it is using far less ink, but still maintaining the incredible print quality.” Mr Webster, who estimates at least 2.5million linear metres will be printed on the Durst Tau RSC in its first year of commercial operation, added: “The print quality means that we can look for more sophisticated work, particularly as we are finding it far easier to hit everybody’s brand colour. As one example, we were actually approached by a major food brand that has led to a new contract that will be worth around £150,000 in the first year. Others will follow. We couldn’t be doing all this without Durst, a company that has
been an incredibly supportive partner with fantastic technology.” Helmuth Munter, Segment Manager, Durst Label & Package Printing, said: “This long-standing relationship with Labmak is a true partnership. We’ve helped them open up new business lines and the Labmak team’s feedback in the beta test has provided valuable insights to make this product even more successful. We now have more than a dozen installations throughout the world, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg because many new orders are coming in. The Durst Tau 330 RSC’s combination of unmatched printing speed and printing quality is a business-winning solution.” Durst’s Tau 330 RSC press features 330 mm (13 in.) print width combined with leading edge print speed of up to 78 linear metres/ min (245 ft./min) at 1200 x 1200 dpi printing resolutions. The press achieves a production capacity of 1.485 m² per hour, and thanks to its eight colour stations (CMYK+W+OVG) with new designed high pigmented inks it delivers outstanding, flexo look-like print quality with close to 98% pantone colour gamut coverage. www.durst-group.com
New Roland VersaEXPRESS RF-640 8 Colour eco-solvent printer Roland DG has announced launch of the Roland VersaEXPRESS RF-640 8 Colour ecosolvent printer, and confidently states that this game-changing device offers the widest colour gamut in its class for outdoor durable graphics. The RF-640 8 Colour is the ideal choice for print service providers looking to stun their clients with jaw-dropping, head-turning, highimpact applications that exceed their clients’ colour expectations. An evolution of the incredibly popular RF640 dual CMYK printer, the RF-640 8 Colour features CMYK plus light black, red, green and orange ink to deliver stunning quality prints and super-accurate colour matching capabilities, all with impressive outdoor durability. Even more impressive, is that despite the incredible quality and business-building potential offered by the solution, the Roland VersaEXPRESS RF-640 8 Colour is priced to be the industry’s most affordable eight colour printer. The new VersaEXPRESS RF-640 8 Colour created a huge amount of anticipation when it was previewed earlier this year at FESPA,
Europe’s leading industry trade fair. Paul Willems, Head of Business Development and Product Management Roland DG EMEA comments. ‘The impact of the prints coming off the RF-640 8 Colour literally stopped visitors in their tracks at FESPA. The incredible buzz around the vibrancy of colour, detail and overall print quality affirms that the RF-640 8 Colour really offers some-thing unique to print service providers and we are excited to bring this solution to market today.’ The RF-640 8 Colour boasts excellent colour reproduction capabilities to accurately colour match and reproduce colours normally difficult to achieve, with ease. Up to 99% of Pantone®+ Solid Coated is within gamut**; perfect for
PSPs looking to match corporate brand colours. Paul Willems explains ‘green and orange are notoriously difficult colours to accurately reproduce, so these additions, along with red, offer enormous opportunities to PSPs working with corporate customers, and major brands such as FMCG and sports companies. Anyone producing branded signage, POS displays, vehicle wraps, and exhibition graphics will benefit from the RF-640 8 Colour’s unparalleled colour matching capabilities.’ Red, green and orange ink extend the range of achievable colours across the colour spectrum, and with light black deliver eye-popping colour, exceptional skin tones and smooth gradients for stunning photographic reproduction. This also makes the RF-640 8 Colour ideal for interior décor applications, fine art and image reproduction, whether supplying to hotel chains, museums, galleries, entertainment spaces or offices. www.rolanddg.co.uk ** Internal tests show up to 99% Pantone®+ Solid Coated in Gamut. Canon launches new production scanners Canon has announced a significant update to its range of imageFORMULA production scanners. The new imageFORMULA DRG2090, DR-G2110 and DR-G2140 offer a strong solution for businesses with high volume scanning needs. Combining Canon’s latest hardware and software technologies, the new series delivers higher speed, lower noise and additional LAN interface for A3 scanning MEETING PRODUCTIVITY NEEDS — Canon’s next generation imageFORMULA DR-G2 series production scanners are well suited to where large volumes of documents need to be digitised, such as busy corporate mailrooms, and companies scanning documents on behalf of their customers, such as business process outsourcing companies. Thanks to the robust feeder mechanism, users are able to scan mixed documents together into the scanner, with pages being reliably fed and separated. You can also scan mixed paper sizes and thicknesses, from business cards up to A1 sized documents using the folio mode feature. The new models use Canon’s latest CIS sensor technology and newly developed onboard DR processor chip to enable high speed scanning and image processing of up to 280 images per minute in colour, at a resolution of 300dpi. Additional productivity enhancing features include a large capacity 500 sheet feeder for handling larger scan batches without interruptions, and Fast Start Scan to minimise delays after the start button is pressed. IMPROVED CONNECTIVITY AND BESPOKE APP BUILDING — The imageFORMULA DR-2110 and 2140 models are the first production scanners to offer both an embedded LAN interface as well as USB connectivity, enabling customers to save on both costs and desk space by eradicating the need for a dedicated PC or software application.
The series has also been updated with document scanning software development kits (SDK) to enable customers to fully meet the individual needs of their organisation. The SDK provides the tools, resources and code that developers need to build new applications and innovative document imaging solutions. The open API and ability to build bespoke experiences on top of the Canon platform means that new devices fit seamlessly in to any existing working environment and perform alongside existing workflows. The scanners also include ISIS/TWAIN/WIA and Kofax VRS Drivers supporting integration into various scanning applications. SUPERIOR IMAGE QUALITY AND INTELLIGENT PROCESSING — Designed to deliver consistently high-quality images, the imageFORMULA DR-G2 series is optimised for accurate data extraction, workflow processing and archiving into document management systems. The devices also offer a new image processing mode, Active Thresholding, which allows customers to scan mixed documents with different texts, colours and backgrounds without adjusting imaging settings. Active
Thresholding compensates for variations in document background by automatically adjusting brightness for each page. The scanners come with Canon’s CaptureOnTouch Pro software which offers a straightforward operation alongside rich OCR tools and cloud connectivity for easy, effective scanning and document conversion to multiple file formats. The Canon imageFORMULA DR-G2110 and DR-G2140 will be available across Europe from November 2018 and the DRG2090 from December 2018. EHANCED DIRECT CONNECTIVITY — NA10 and WA10 Network Adapters allow several of Canon’s USB scanners to be connected directly to the network. Businesses can now share a single scanning device across users in an office, and position in customer facing locations where space may be limited, enabling immediate processing without the need for a PC. The devices offer simpler task management for push scanning — the ‘easy job button’ provides shortcuts to scanning functions, saving time on set-up. The NA10 model comes with wired LAN connection interface while the WA10 model additionally offers a WiFi interface. Both models will be available across Europe in November 2018 SUPPORTING CUSTOMISED INTEGRATION — Canon will also be releasing a series of new software development toolkits to support closer integration between its scanner technologies and customer applications and systems. These include a DR Web SDK for easy integration with web-based applications, a new DR- Scanner SDK for bespoke integration, and easy platform for capture application development, as well as new embedded SDK for Canon’s ScanFront 400 Network Scanner. www.canon.co.uk

New Clear Ink for Mimaki’s UCJV300 Series Mimaki has announced the availability of new LUS-170 Clear Ink to be used on the UCJV300 Series. The additional LUS-170 clear ink offers a host of new design possibilities and expands business opportunities by creating compelling displays using gloss, matte or textured finish. “With the availability of this clear ink for the UCJV300 series, we have employed our proprietary Mimaki Clear Control (MCC) technology for the first time in a roll-to-roll printer,” comments Ronald van den Broek, General Manager Sales EMEA of Mimaki Europe. “This unique feature shortens the time needed for ink curing to prevent dust from sticking, ensuring smoother, cleaner clear effects, such as matte or glossy finish. We believe this new ink opens up more possibilities for Mimaki users and enhances the versatility of our award-winning UCJV300 series even further.” To simplify the process of creating clear effects, Mimaki also offers the ARTISTA UV Texture Library, which users can access when they install Mimaki’s RasterLink6Plus RIP software on a UCJV300 printer. The ARTISTA UV Texture Library features 129 texture swatches for use in Adobe Illustrator to add even more visual effects. About the Mimaki UCJV300 Series — Available in four different print widths ranging from 80cm to 1.6m, the Mimaki
UCJV300 series delivers a remarkable range of applications and versatility with layered print technology, including newly developed four layer and five layer capabilities. Their integrated cut functionality enables volume production of labels, decals, window clings, vehicle graphics and more. Brett Newman, Chief Operations Manager at Mimaki’s UK and Ireland distributor — Hybrid Services expands; “Utilising flexible UV inks that cure instantly, allows customers to quickly print and immediately laminate or deliver the finished product without waiting for drying. The UCJV printers also feature white ink, enabling users to produce brilliant colours on transparent, coloured or metallic substrates.
The introduction of clear ink also places the UCJV300 series into the prototyping and packaging environment.” With its layered printing capability, the UCJV300 series can deliver dynamic backlit graphics, or graphics that are transformed with different light sources. “UV-curable inks also offer greater opacity with less ink consumption than other ink formulations,” continues Newman. “Mimaki’s LUS-170 ink is GREENGUARD Gold certified, meaning that it meets the rigorous standards for low emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is acceptable for use in environments such as schools and healthcare facilities.” www.hybridservices.co.uk

PIXEL PROPHET
PAYING FOR PROGRESS It would be fair to say Adobe’s decision to go with subscription wasn’t universally popular amongst users. For twenty years consumers had the option of picking a oneoff standalone version of a particular software package, or a free limited edition, or even for shame a bootleg copy passed on by a friend or hacked with the licence key. Martin Christie writes…
[O]
f course the latter option, and the consequent loss of revenue, was one of the reasons Adobe sought an alternative approach, but it wasn’t the only one, or even the major one. Any software, like hardware, has a limited shelf life. Programmes need to be developed and updated, and bugs and errors need to be ironed out. A hard product, like a car or a washing machine, can be recalled if a serious problem arises, but it’s not so clear cut with digital formula, and unlike a perishable item like food, there’s no ultimate deadline date on the label. So users may be struggling with a feature performing badly long after it should have been retired, causing frustration, and complaints in equal measure. The problem with the one-stop solution is that there is an actual disincentive to make the product so good you will never need to buy another, or update it. There is an obsolescence inevitably built in whether by actual design or natural circumstance. And in this fast forward digital environment, old takes on a whole new meaning, when the age of a device is measured in months and years rather than decades. Of course, other software solutions are available, and users didn’t have to go with Adobe’s subscription option if they didn’t like signing up to an on-going relationship. The policy in fact spawned a great many other alternatives, including free use ones, to fill the demand from those unwilling to invest in the Creative Cloud package. At the same time, the last few years have seen the rapid growth of the mobile device as the tool of choice rather than the laptop or the desktop, so a convenient and cheaper alternative was an attractive choice. So Adobe’s decision to run with a continuous payment plan may have seemed risky at the time. Other software giants have crumbled in the past through the relentless pace of digital progress. However, four years down the line, the policy seems to be successfully vindicated. The company is tightlipped about the actual number of subscribers who have taken up the deal, but a 2017 projection estimated that some 12 million users were active on the scheme. And that number just about matches the number of people who had purchased an official Adobe product prior to the change. The commitment, and the cost, means that these are predominantly professional users, but that very fact has helped development across the whole catalogue because they are users with a good working knowledge of the basic product. Adobe no longer needs to “dumb down” certain features to make them more user friendly for the novice in the style of many of the free-to-download alternatives. The workspace retains the traditional look, but so much more has been packed into the tools often hidden behind the dashboard. Most importantly, the regular updates allow significant improvements to be made to all of the products, and individual items within them. These developments further enhance the possibilities for the professional user, and enlarge the creative gap between the studio and the average customer. And while we can berate the fact they cannot provide print ready files from their phone, we should be grateful that this leaves open the opportunity for corrective digital surgery.
The hard job will be convincing the customer that this is a service worth paying extra for, but at least Adobe are providing us with the tools that will make correction, adjustment and enhancement, an easier task for the experienced operator. For the money, subscribers to the Creative Cloud have had an average two significant updates a year across the board. The latest, in October, saw some much anticipated improvements that will make a big difference to regular tasks, and enable things which previously were considered impractical. There are far too many total changes to list here, but if you have just done the update, spend a little time on the Adobe website where everything is not only featured, but where you can find helpful tutorials. The unrivalled one line back up, not only from official sources, but so many other experts, is another reason why the Creative Cloud is so far ahead of any competition. I’m featuring changes to Photoshop, not only because this column is about digital imaging, but also because the manipulation of pixel based images is the most basic and frequently undertaken challenge for the print shop, whether it’s a document without the necessary bleed, or an actual photo that needs cropping, resizing or retouching. One of the biggest steps forward is to Content Aware, already a powerful image editing tool, now a serious piece of pixel patching magic. It was already pretty good at sampling similar pixels and rearranging them as I have shown in previous columns, stitching individual sections of scanned artwork for example. Now you can be more specific and selective, taking real time control instead of it being a semi-automated product. With the latter, you couldn’t tell Photoshop what areas to sample from or how to generate the fill. Now you can. If you use any selection to isolate a piece of the image, a new Content Aware Fill option lights up in the Edit column. This opens up another work panel which allows you to edit the selection using the sampling brush to add or remove areas from the image which will be used for sampling. A colour overlay covers the area used to generate the fill. You can change the colour and the opacity of this overlay, and also opt to show the selection included or excluded in the action.
Quick Print Pro • Digital Imaging
November 2018
As well as the initial brush tool, the lasso can also be used to modify the original selection, and expand or contract buttons to enable changes in size. From that selection the fill settings themselves have options. Colour Adaptation is good for filling content with gradual colour or texture changes, as it reacts to contrast and brightness, so probably best for photographic images. Rotation Adaptation might better suit regular patterns so could be useful for adding bleed, but there is also Scale and Mirror to simulate repeated patterns or symmetry, and possibly heal or extend those irritating portions of an image that run too close to the print boundaries. There’s still a bit of trial and error in all of this as you would expect, but the trial bit is made easier with a full resolution preview enabling you to monitor changes made before committing them to fact. Even then you have the final option of placing the fill in the existing layer, as a duplicate layer on top of the original, or as a non-destructive individual layer than can be further blended into the original with the existing Photoshop tools. This new feature compliments the Select and Mask tool introduced in the previous 2018 update, and between them massively improves the potential for major modification to images without painfully long cut-outs using the pen tool, and selection paths. Being able to define detail as well as large selections makes the almost seamless separation of subject and background — like a tree from a sky — a fairly straightforward task. A person’s hair, for example, is notoriously difficult to cut if you are a photo editor and not a barber. For print it’s important that this is done as accurately as possible as any imperfections will be obvious to the eye on paper, though they may not be spotted in an app on a phone. Of course editing original images does potentially have more sinister implications in this era of fake news. It might just be a random item or an unwanted guest at a wedding reception, but altering history has a track record long before digital. George Orwell’s main character in 1984, written in post war 1949, was tasked with removing from recorded history people who had fallen out of favour with the regime of Big Brother. Adobe has considered the possible legal implications of this because the history of all the actions taken can be recorded and actually embedded in the metadata of the digital file. So even if the printed picture doesn’t tell the whole story, the true facts can still be traced. There are a host of other improvements in the new Photoshop update, like being able to lock panels in the workspace so you don’t rearrange them accidentally and have to search for the last file you were working on. Quite handy, as in other Adobe apps, you can now take steps back in history with one click (control + Z win or Command + Z mac) rather than use the list in the dedicated panel. Adding Shift in front on the sequence reverses the action in the chain and restores the previous state. There are some new tricks for placing images into frames within a picture, which might be handy for novelty cards, and
vivid-online.com
easier than cutting, sizing and pasting the conventional way. This can also be used for existing layers of text. I’ve only just had a brief look at this feature but I think it will also prove to be a fast and very flexible way of creating artwork for one-off t-shirts, for example. This is often a bit of a chore at the print counter as the customer often has no more than a picture and an idea for a caption, and not much idea how they will look when they are all put together. As there’s not a lot of profit margin in a while-you-wait type service, this is a better way of throwing together simple but good looking graphics as it works with shapes as well. You should have already discovered this year’s new look Home page from which you can view or remove recent open images, as well as chose or create custom templates for regular sized jobs, but there are now other refinements for the workspace which enable you to further customise your working environment, docking frequently used panels, and saving favourite tools where they are easily found. When you hover over a Tool now you can get, as well as a title description, a little visual demonstration of it in action, which may just prompt you to use the right one. A bit of attention to detail which all helps working in the programme a little or a lot easier. The subscription policy, as well as regular revenue, has provided Adobe with a very direct connection with its users that works both ways, and the feedback all helps make those major and minor improvements that develop the entire package. It would seem to be paying off for both parties.

In his new role, Dean will be responsible for driving and supporting sales of the Zünd range to existing and potential customers throughout the UK. Dean Ashworth’s appointment follows the earlier announcement that Nicki Kay had assumed the role of Managing Director for Zünd UK’s operations. Dean joins Zünd UK from Morgan Advanced Materials, a leading global business in advanced materials science and engineering of ceramics, carbon and composites, where he most recently held the position of Commercial Manager. As part of the senior leadership team, Dean headed up all commercial functions of the Morgan Technical Ceramics division and was responsible for developing and managing top-
tier aerospace and industrial gas turbine (IGT) customers. Prior to this, Dean spent 15 years working within the footwear and leather product industries where he developed his skills for
winning, growing and maintaining large accounts. Picon celebrates its Centenary Picon celebrated its first 100 years with a lunch at Stationers’ Hall on International Print Day, 17 October. The employers’ organisation represents the suppliers of printing and allied equipment and currently has 95 members who enjoy many business benefits. Bettine Pellant, CEO of Picon, says: “Our organisation has proved adaptable to political, economic and social change and each generation has addressed issues as they saw fit. I am really proud to be part of an organisation which has reached such an important landmark and one that has emerged stronger and with a broader membership and remit. “We remain relevant and proactive, creating opportunities to speak out on behalf of our sector and to create commercial opportunities, be that attending UK and international exhibitions for sales and growth or holding business forums to enable members to gain information and extend their skills. We can only ever be as good as our membership and this is a strong and proactive team who compete hard by day but enjoy each other’s company and respect each other’s views within the Picon organisation.” It was on 16 October 1918 that The Association of British Manufacturers of Machinery for the Printing and Allied Trades was formed “to encourage, promote and protect the interests of manufacturers and producers in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland of Machinery for the Printing
Bettine Pellant, CEO of Picon
and Allied Trades.” There have been many name changes and highs and lows in activity in the century that followed but Picon emerges stronger and more relevant than ever in 2018. Significantly the protectionist remit that started it all has given way to a much more international and diverse body, not least with the mergers of the BFPMS (British Federation for Printing Machinery and Supplies) and the BPMMA (British Paper Machinery Makers Association) to become Picon (which stands for the Printing Industry
Confederation) and, significantly, the merger just ten years ago of Picon and the APMI (Association of Printing Machinery Importers). Gerard Heanue, Chairman of Picon, muses: “How would the founders of 1918 have felt that the Chairman today represents a Germany company? And, given that this was the year women over 30 years first got the vote, could they have anticipated there being a lady CEO running the organisation?” Print, and by implication, print suppliers have faced many challenges, not least competition from other media including radio, TV, cinema, computers and the Internet. Letterpress has given way to litho and today we see digital technology gathering pace. “Suppliers should lie comfortable in their beds; print will still have a place into the 22nd century,” says Mr Heanue in the introduction to the centenary book which covers the organisation’s history and current activities. It was researched and written by a team that included Paul Foster, Simon Jamieson and Diana Thompson and was designed by Darran Porter of PorterClarkeDesign. The book features headlines in Palatino Linotype with text in 10pt Swiss light and bold. It was printed by Optichrome on a Roland B1 press using 170gsm Galerie Matt paper, then PUR bound in hardback and covered using Brillianta black cloth. The book is enclosed in a Fenner Colorset Nero slipcase and foil blocked in gloss black and silver. www.picon.com

Women in print: Sharp Q&A Corina Schiopu, Bid Manager has been an important figure in highlighting the benefits of Sharp’s product and solutions since she joined the Corporate Bid team one year ago. Q: So, you’ve worked for Sharp for one year now, can you tell us a bit about your background and how you found yourself at Sharp today? A: Well I’ve worked in bid since 2007. I studied languages and communications at university in Romania, where I’m from. I’ve always loved language and the art of persuasion through language. I came to the UK in 2015 and really haven’t looked back since. My degree has come in handy because I have always had to sell in the right way with the right language. I joined Sharp in 2017 and I love it! Q: So, having been in the technology industry for many years now, are you aware of any recent changes in the industry? A: There are some huge acquisitions taking place at the minute. Sharp has acquired Midshire, HP has acquired Apogee, these are seriously big developments in our industry. Everyone is preparing for the changes taking place with how people interact with and use technology, so manufacturers are strategically acquiring resellers that offer more than just printers.
get people to listen to and respect you and getting time from people is often the hardest thing!
Q: More specifically, do you feel the industry has changed to be more inclusive of women? What challenges do you feel you face in the industry and your role? A: I personally haven’t noticed. I’ve worked in this sort of role and in this arena for 11 years now and I’ve seen mostly women, so I’ve felt it’s been quite inclusive! I don’t think it matters if you’re a man or a woman, the challenges faced in work will be faced by everyone — you have to try and
Q: What advice would you give to any young females looking to move into the technology sector? A: Just do it. It can be daunting but don’t overthink it. My philosophy has always been if it isn’t going to kill me, just do it. Command respect, but also be respectful to your colleagues, listen to their needs, be great at your job, be fair and you’ll go far! www.sharp.co.uk

Printwear & Promotion LIVE!
REGISTER ONLINE NOW The countdown to Printwear & Promotion LIVE!’s 30th anniversary is on — and visitor registration is now open for the industry’s biggest ever event. Following the successful switch to January dates this year, the show will again take place in January — starting on Sunday 20th January to Tuesday 22nd January 2019 in Halls 17 & 18 at the NEC, Birmingham.

he only exhibition dedicated to the UK garment decoration industry, the show aims to inspire its visitors, providing a vibrant, dynamic and interactive event with workshops, seminars, advice from industry experts and on stand demonstrations. Garment decoration tips and small business advice will be available from two seminar suites, the Screen Print Workshop returns, while the Fashion Show and a new feature area for 2019, the Skate Ramp, will showcase garments in action.
New exhibitors
Printwear & Promotion LIVE!’s 30th anniversary edition will feature returning visitor favourites alongside a number of new companies making their debut at the show. AS Colour, a printwear brand that is already successfully established in New Zealand and Australia, will continue its plan to move into the UK and European markets by showcasing its premium range of products at the show. Visitors to the AS Colour stand will be able to feel the quality of the garments, which are ideal for both retailers and garment decorators, as noted by general manager Jonathon Wintle: “Our 28-singles, 100% combed cotton fabric is ideal for DTG printing. The best results are achieved on the purest fabric. The nice tight weave means less ink is required and as a result you get better prints.” One of the UK’s leading trophy suppliers, Goodwill Trophy Company, will be targeting the printwear market with its first stand at Printwear & Promotion LIVE! Visitors to the company’s stand will be able to see both old and new ranges of trophies and awards, as well as pick up a catalogue featuring all the latest designs. Commenting on how printwear companies can benefit from the GTC’s offering, director Dan Goodwin says: “Trophies are a great add on. Many printwear companies will be supplying sports clubs, teams or organisations organising sports events. To be able to offer trophies and

Taking the decision to exhibit for the first time was an easy one for Gravograph, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of rotary and laser engraving equipment. General manager Michel Tissut explains: “P&P LIVE! is a well established and organised event. If printwear is specific, promotion isn’t and broadens the appeal of the exhibition for both visitors and exhibitors. Many of our customers use several personalisation technologies, such as printing

Paper & Beyond leadership circular bioeconomy Paper & Beyond, the new event concept where circular bioeconomy leaders meet, took place just a week following the release of the EU’s new Bioeconomy Strategy, which set out a clear path for better linking the bioeconomy and circularity. “The new European strategy comes at a defining moment for the bioeconomy” says Karl-Henrik Sundström, CEO of Stora Enso and Chairman of CEPI. “Industry’s transformation is gaining pace across the entire forest fibre and paper value chain. As the mainstream renewable and recyclable material industry, we are ready to take the lead on Europe’s circular bioeconomy”. The first of its kind conference got off to an innovative start with a competition gathering some of Europe’s most promising young researchers. From the engineering of spider Karl-Henrik Sundström silk strong nanocellulose filaments to paper-based electrodes for fuel cells, researchers illustrated the innovativeness and European lead in forest fibre research. Building on this year’s theme, the “Europe & Beyond — Getting the best from the bioeconomy” session welcomed keynote speaker Peggy Liu, a world-renowned sustainability expert on China who brought a global perspective on the circular bioeconomy. She touched upon recent developments in China, including the country’s waste restrictions, its policy on single-use plastics and its recent investments in Europe under the Belt and Road initiative. Following the positive trends in production (up 1.5%), exports (up 5.4%) and investment (up 7.5%) seen in the latest market data for 2017, RISI returned to provide insights into circular bioeconomy markets, with, for the first time, a business intelligence session on European nanocellulose markets. www.cepi.org

The concept behind the platform — The new platform departs from the

Strapless Delivery Thanks to Brad Goldsmith, our marketing contact at Premier Paper for encouraging us printers to get to know the great work they partner with the Woodland Trust. Through the Woodland trust online shop we have sourced a print/paper box carrier that does not require a plastic band. Our on going research, which you are all invited to chip in with, is how to deliver ‘plastic free’ print. Carrying boxed print is a task in itself as unsealed boxes of paper are difficult to stack and as we all know weigh a fair bit too. Carrying paper safely is paramount too and if you deliver ‘blank copier paper’ for your DIY print customers then even when strapped, two boxes, one in each hand is a struggle as the plastic can cut into your hands. Maybe I’m getting soft or are these boxes getting heavier? And as for A3, go get a trolley! Now, as our pictorial research shows, we have found this Woodland Trust shop product to alleviate all of our concerns. Thanks for your help Printz. With canvas handles this sturdy jute carrier measures 1030mm x 580mm and is fit for purpose. Just their marketing messaging may need to be fine tuned or heat press your own company details on the canvas holdall. Building on CEPI’s more than twenty year history of being the focal point for third-party verified, industry data, all information on the site will be updated systematically multiple times per year. Users will be able to download the entire website as a PDF or pick and choose per policy section. Pulp and paper company good practices, all in one place — The new platform also offers the possibility for companies across CEPI’s membership to display their good practices in the fields of bioeconomy, circular economy/recycling, environment, energy and climate change and forestry. The dedicated Good Practices section will be the focal point for researchers, journalists, policymakers and more seeking best examples from the sustainability leaders in our industry. Key data revealed — Following on from the publication of CEPI’s ‘Key Statistics’ in July, the new platform also reveals a wealth of data on industry’s sustainability achievements. Notably, new certification figures were made public showing that 83.2% of the pulp purchased by the industry is certified and that 70.7% of wood, woodchips or residues from saw mills purchased by the industry come from certified forests. www.cepi.org

Konica Minolta’s innovation approach recognised in best practice global report
For large firms, the accelerating pace of digitalisation in modern business creates both opportunity and risk: On the one hand, it can be a source for significant growth. On the other hand, even small start-ups can quickly disrupt established core markets for big players. This makes innovation power a crucial factor for business success — and forces big companies to re-evaluate the way they organise innovation. Konica Minolta’s innovation approach is one of the best practices referenced in Capgemini Consulting and MIT Digital’s new research on “The Foundations of Corporate Innovation in the Digital Age”. Innovation is a core virtue for Konica Minolta, from well before the digital era: for more than 140 years of its existence, the company has never stopped pushing the boundaries of technology for its customers. Yuji Ichimura, Konica Minolta’s Senior Executive Officer at Konica Minolta, Inc, said: “To us,
innovation is a core business function pursued around the world.” Capgemini Consulting and MIT Digital’s report identifies three factors for a successful organisation of innovation in large corporations: the right innovation architecture, the right innovation sources and the alignment of the right capabilities. Konica Minolta’s innovation architecture spans the globe with its five Business Innovation Centres (BICs) on different continents. Their mission is to gain a deeper understanding of customers’ needs and deliver the greatest value by anticipating them, serving as core engines of growth for the company. With regard to innovation sources, Konica Minolta believes that collaboration is a key driver for success. Therefore, it pursues an “open innovation” process, working together with clients, partners, independent research facilities and universities, to develop new offerings in the areas of The Workplace of the Future, Augmented Vision, Wearable Devices and Innovation as a Service. The BICs are the catalysts for change and success to deliver Konica Minolta’s future offerings. Finally, innovation is deeply anchored in the company’s culture of constant transformation, encouraging teams to take on its challenges: “We are honoured and proud to be included as a best practice in this innovation report by such
renowned organisations. This further assures us that we are on the right track to ensure a successful future for our company”, Ichimura concluded. As innovation is part of the core DNA of Konica Minolta, the company is always evolving new ways and technologies to help businesses flourish in the new Digital world. Cath Hackett, Director of Strategic Marketing and Innovation at Konica Business Solutions UK, said: “Our innovations help businesses to shape the future, changing the way people conduct business and use technology for business advantage. We have helped many global blue-chip businesses reduce costs, streamline business processes and undergo successful digital transformation “In the UK, Konica Minolta, is going through really exciting changes as we continue to evolve into an agile Smart Data and IT Services company that meets the changing needs of customers with our Digital Print, IoT, Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality solutions, and Managed IT Services.” www.konicaminolta.co.uk

the retail market projected to be worth USD 7951.2 million by 2023[1], the technology is rapidly being adopted by retailers to provide an immersive, real-time, in-store experience for consumers without them having to leave their home or workplace. OKI Europe is bringing this same immersive experience to the retailers themselves through the OKI AR Showroom. Users can visualise how OKI’s range of High Definition Colour printers and multifunction printers combined with ad hoc state of the art software platforms, will fit within their own work environments by aiming their camera at a desk or work surface and selecting an OKI device from the screen.
Retailers will also discover the breadth of eye-catching, point-of-sale materials that OKI’s Retail Solutions can offer - at the touch of a button - in-store. These include drop banners, posters, shelf signage, floralabels, number plates and stickers on a huge range of media types, sizes and weights, including waterproof, magnetic and pre-cut media. Furthermore, users can view all of these applications in situ, within their own retail environment. “OKI has a rich heritage in innovation,” said Javier López, General Manager, Vertical Solutions, OKI Europe Ltd. “For more than three decades we have focused on customerled innovation, including the ground-breaking launch of Europe’s first LED printer. “Our new AR Showroom app is another industry-first, helping businesses understand how OKI printers can print on an amazingly wide range of media types and sizes, including film, waterproof, magnetic and pre-cut media. Additionally, customers can print in large format, up to 1.3m in duplex for highly impactful hanging banners to engage customers and drive sales. The app will enable retailers to open up a world of print possibilities and understand that by bringing printing in-store they can become more creative and responsive to their visual communications needs.” Available on any iOS device, the OKI AR Showroom is officially being launched at VISCOM, in Milan and is available to visitors to test on the OKI Europe Stand, Hall 12, Stand F39/G32 from 18th to 20th October 2018. XAAR 3D ENGINEERING LEADERS OF TOMORROW
Xaar 3D, a leading developer of 3D printing solutions based on High Speed Sintering technologies, is supporting the Sheffield Engineering Leadership Academy (SELA) programme for engineering students at the University of Sheffield, as recently shown by its involvement in the programme’s Bootcamp for 2018’s new recruits held in September. Neil Hopkinson, Director of Technology at Xaar 3D, founded the SELA programme whilst in his previous role as Professor of Engineering at The University of Sheffield. The SELA programme aims to address the UK leadership gap in engineering by supplementing the outstanding technical knowledge of the University’s Faculty of Engineering graduates with the skills, confidence and aptitude to take the lead in their chosen fields. Industry involvement is central to the SELA programme, with partners such as Xaar 3D providing motivational speakers and summer work placements, delivering skills training, and offering a mentor to the SELA members — including at the recent bootcamp for inducting this year’s new recruits. “SELA is delighted to have the support of industry partners and professionals who volunteer their time to mentor the students as they begin their leadership journey within the programme,” comments Dr Gary Wood, Head of SELA. “We are immensely grateful for their help and could not offer such an engaging learning experience for the students without their input. “This year, we were pleased to welcome back as a mentor our founding director, Professor Neil Hopkinson, who was able to contextualise students’ learning by drawing on his experiences in academia and industry, helping them identify and reflect on their strengths and areas for development as they enter the programme.” The SELA Bootcamp weekend is designed to welcome the year’s new students and enable them to get to know each other before they begin the two-year programme. This year’s 38 participants were selected from over 1200 eligible students through a competitive process designed to uncover each candidate’s potential. Neil Hopkinson says: “I am delighted and impressed to see the growth of SELA as it
matures into a well-established community populated by the highest calibre of engineering talent. Having originally formed the idea for SELA back in early 2013, I take great personal satisfaction is seeing the vision become a reality. Huge credit goes to all members of SELA community for making this happen. The futures of both SELA and its members are extremely exciting and inspiring.” Student quotes from the SELA bootcamp “I was blown away by the SELA Bootcamp! The approach to the whole weekend, with the workshops and involvement from mentors and partners, was thoroughly inspiring and underlined the professionalism to the SELA programme. I would wholeheartedly recommend others considering getting involved to help build and develop their leadership skills.” Jack Trethewey, studying Mechanical Engineering. “I was attracted to the SELA programme due to its focus on leadership, which I felt would complement the skills I was developing on my degree course. The Bootcamp was great fun and the perfect introduction. I learnt a lot about myself in the workshops and particularly enjoyed the ‘Six Thinking Hats’ task, which provided a different perspective to dealing with a problem. I am very excited for the 1st year project and believe as a cohort we have the potential to make a real difference in raising awareness of engineering.” Mariyam Bi, studying Chemical Engineering. “The ability to develop leadership skills alongside my academic learning was too good an opportunity to pass up, so I was thrilled to be selected for the SELA programme. The level of detail to the Bootcamp weekend was unbelievable! It was great to meet industry partners and take part in organised tasks with constructive feedback from mentors. After this perfect welcome, I now can’t wait to begin our 1st year project.” Mark Harris, studying Mechanical Engineering with German About SELA Sheffield Engineering Leadership Academy develops engineering undergraduate students to become leaders of tomorrow, who create positive impact in research and industry. Recruiting talent from the University of Sheffield’s Faculty of Engineering, SELA works with industry partners and academics, and fast tracks the development of engineering leaders to build the skills, confidence and aptitude to make a positive difference. www.xaar.com • www.sela-sheffield.org

Signs Now open new doors with Arizona Award-winning specialist Signs Now has installed a new Océ Arizona 1260 XT system after tasking Canon to provide the best way forward as part of a major upgrade to build business revenues. After more than a decade using an Arizona 250 GT, Signs Now took the plunge to invest again to keep the company at the forefront of production. The deal for the new Arizona was confirmed at Sign & Digital UK, with the installation completed in May. Signs Now manager Carlo Matarazzo said: “We did some in-depth research over six months. Canon took a consultative approach and really wanted to understand our business to help us grow. We haven’t looked back. The machine has been brilliant in terms of speed, quality and the add-on features. ”It’s still early days but we know already it has seriously reduced labour costs and we feel sure it will open up many new business opportunities going forward.” Signs Now machine operator Will Fallon adds: “I absolutely love this machine — it’s a huge step forward. One of the real benefits for me is the automatic cleaning system, which means I don’t have to spend up to 90 minutes a day cleaning the machine and vacuuming.” Signs Now has ISO 9001 and 14001 accreditations for its environment management capabilities. Its health and safety system has been approved by CHAS, SAFE Contractor and Constructiononline. The company, a member of the BSGA — British Sign & Graphics Association and the International Sign Association, has also won various awards, which include the British Sign and Graphics Association Leisure Industry Award, Roll-out Programme, and Sign Business of the Year. Important benefits from the investment for Signs Now include: • Further uplift in quality and a system four times as fast as the previous Arizona 250 GT system with printing of up to 35 sq m/hour • White option. The ability to print directly with white — including text — instead of having to tape up the material and use a cutter beforehand • Automation. Easy operator controls and pins that automatically align work instead of manual operations that cost time • Automatic maintenance capability. Self-cleaning and head testing capabilities that free up valuable time • Ability to print wider on the double flatbed • Advanced production software and a roll-to-roll option Signs Now has four sites and a £3 million turnover, employing 35 staff. It covers the UK and EMEA work that includes all kinds of signage for shop fronts, retail parks, schools and blue-chip companies.
Neil McMinn, Canon UK’s Head of Sales for Display Graphics, Industrial and Production Solutions said: “As a partner that can be trusted to help organisations work more efficiently, achieve growth and stand out in an always-on world, we’re delighted that Signs Now has once again invested in one of our world-class Arizona systems. “Canon combines heavy investment in research and development and dedication to launching disruptive technologies to help customers face today’s complex business challenges. The Arizona is a perfect example of how companies can open new doors and increase the bottom line through latest advancements, such as automation and software.” www.signsnow.co.uk www.canon.co.uk

Fatree5 takes on sportswear world and wins Cheltenham’s Fatree5 installed two Roland printing systems three years ago after seeing an exciting niche market and has seen its business snowball ever since. When Paul Butler sets out to do something, he goes for it. A veteran in the motocross circuit, he was disappointed by the quality of the riders’ clothing so decided to do something about it, founding Fatree5 to design and manufacture durable, functional and clearly branded garments. “I’ve always been at the forefront of motocross. I go to all the events and know what the kids like — my own children are involved now,” says Paul. “I thought the quality of the clothing could be better so I tried making my own. It’s just snowballed from there.” The key to this success has been the investment in two Roland printing systems at the outset: a Texart RT-640 dye-sublimation printer customised for Fatree5 with fluorescent inks and a TrueVIS SG-300 combination printer/cutter. In addition to the motocross clothing, the printers are used for a multitude of products including graphics, signage, stickers, flags, banners and parasols. Fatree5 has also
broken into the equestrian, extreme cycling and leisure clothing markets. Commenting on the Texart, Paul says: “We looked at other machines, but the quality just wasn’t as good. Roland seemed years ahead. The inks are fantastic, producing good, clear print — nothing is blurred — and the machine itself is absolutely fantastic, bulletproof.” The printers were recommended by Roland distributor Xpres. Paul comments: “When you talk to Roland they don’t push any machine at you, it’s not a sales pitch. And Xpres had all the information we needed too.” Thanks to the quality and efficiency of its workflow, Fatree5 can produce tailor-made, uniquely customised sports clothing at incredibly fast turnaround speeds — a real boon in a market that previously relied on long runs of apparel ordered from abroad. Plus, the versatility of Texart dye-sub technology means the business can produce a whole range of coordinated items: ‘Anything we can sublimate we do sublimate, all in house’, says Paul. Fatree5 is now producing work for a leading British motorcycle manufacturer destined for the USA, where the brand’s British heritage
is well regarded, while also fielding enquiries from electric bike manufacturers looking for worldwide distribution. The business’s work was part of the display at Roland DG’s booth at Sign and Digital UK in Birmingham this spring. “We are always busy,” says Paul. www.fatree5.com • www.rolanddg.co.uk
ArtSystems partners with SHINING 3D
A Krafty idea from Route1
Nottingham-based ArtSystems, a valueadded distributor and service provider, has announced its new partnership with SHINING 3D, a leading manufacturer of 3D digitising and 3D printing technologies. Will Glass, ArtSystems’ 3D Product Specialist, said: “This new partnership recognises the rapidly increasing demand for 3D digitising and 3D printing technology and services in the UK and we are delighted to partner with SHINING 3D. “Its range of unique products are tailor-made to meet the needs of customers seeking high performance yet cost-effective 3D solutions. ArtSystems is the longest established specialist distributor in the additive manufacturing sector, and the SHINING 3D range is the perfect fit to further enhance our 3D portfolio.” SHINING 3D’s Vice President of global sales, Oscar Meza, explained: “As the demand for 3D digitising and 3D printing technology continues to increase, we are excited to partner with ArtSystems to bring our comprehensive range of 3D solutions to British customers. “To date we have opened two overseas offices to support our steady increase in global business and provide a better service for our customers. One is in Stuttgart, Germany, and
Route 1 are now printing business cards, greetings cards and flyers on 280gsm Kraft. Kraft is a brown, recycled stock. In lighter weights it is used as parcel wrap or paper bags. 280gsm, Kraft card is much firmer and is a popular stock for alternative business cards and greetings cards. You have to be aware that as Kraft is far from a standard white stock it will affect your artwork’s colouring. It’s also worth noting that, due to the nature of how Kraft is formed, one side of the stock will be a slightly lighter shade than the other. Many people choose to create designs out of just black ink and that’s because it stands out so well against the brown. This approach brilliantly complements the old fashioned style of Kraft. Colours work too, though, and they’re a great way to modernise the vintage-feeling stock. If you do want to use colour, use strong, vibrant blocks of colour. www.route1print.co.uk
the other in San Francisco, USA. Engaging with ArtSystems brings us fully into the UK. This September we also exhibited at the TCT Show 2018 at the NEC, Birmingham, in recognition of the UK’s huge market potential.” Will Glass agreed: “Our new partnership with SHINING 3D takes us further into the dynamic and growing market of immersive technology and we are looking forward to the fresh opportunities it will create for our customers. We shall be working with SHINING 3D to create a strong partner channel able to offer innovative and profitable 3D scanning solutions, and to help our customers meet the challenges and the opportunities presented by the fast-developing Industry 4.0 in the manufacturing industry.” Oscar Meza concluded: “Leveraging ArtSystems’ marketing and distribution expertise with SHINING 3D’s quality products will strengthen both companies’ business. It is a positive strategic move that creates a great foundation for our future mutual success.” The market leader in its field in China, SHINING 3D can claim a strong international influence with customers in more than 70 countries, including Asia, North America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. www.artsystems.co.uk

Whaam! N3 Display Graphics makes an impact Large-format print specialist N3 Display Graphics has produced an incredibly high-impact wall graphic using ReTac® Textures Linen media from Drytac®. N3 Display Graphics Ltd (launched in 2000) produced a super-sized version of Roy Lichtenstein’s iconic pop art painting Whaam! for its building in Bristol, UK. These purpose-built premises accommodate around 20 employees including on-site fittings teams. The company - a specialist in large-scale display work such as exhibition graphics - has been a customer of fellow Bristol brand Drytac from the beginning. It uses the Linen material from the Drytac ReTac Textures range for all its wall art, including its own homage to Lichtenstein. “ReTac Textures Linen is simply what we call ‘wallpaper’ at N3,” says Robin Campbell, Projects Manager at N3 Display Graphics. “We use it for the majority of our wall graphics. It has a slight texture which provides a realistic feel of the wall underneath and holds colour well, producing really vibrant graphics. “We have tried other brands’ products but have always had problems with adhesion. In one case a wall graphic peeled off as soon as the air conditioning was switched on, while another product described as ‘repositionable’ couldn’t be removed from the wall at all. Drytac’s ReTac fits the bill.” ReTac Textures Linen is a 150μ (6 mil) printable, matte white phthalatefree polymeric PVC film with an embossed linen-like finish to add depth to flat graphics — perfect for home, business and retail environments and more. Its ReTac ultra-removable adhesive makes it easy to apply and reposition without loss of adhesion, and removal without surface damage. ReTac Textures Linen is compatible with solvent, eco-solvent, UV and latex printing technologies.
The version of Whaam! produced by N3 Display Graphics is around 15m long by 4m tall at its highest point — somewhat larger than Roy Lichtenstein’s original 1963 diptych on display at the Tate Modern gallery in London. Using its Océ Arizona 460 XT UV flatbed printer, N3 Display Graphics also added its own stamp to the image with fresh colours and extra movement in the background. As it is a copyright-protected image, N3 Display Graphics can only print Whaam! for its own use. Other clients include shopping centres, museums and galleries, and tourist attractions such as Bristol Aquarium and many more. www.n3display.co.uk • www.drytac.com
Poppy Signs bloom with Anti-Scratch Laminate Chorley-based Poppy Signs has been converted to Drytac’s Protac AntiScratch laminate, following its installation at the offices of theidol.com, a web-based insurance provider based in Penrith, Cumbria. Dave McDonald, Managing Director of Poppy Signs, explains: “We recently carried out a job on an internal glass partition for theidol.com that was finished with a regular clear laminate. Unfortunately, the surface scuff marks left by the squeegees looked really obvious, unsightly and didn’t fade out as we would normally expect after a few days. We are fully focused on customer service and do everything we can to ensure our customers have the best possible graphics solution, so clearly this wasn’t good enough.” Poppy Signs decided to trial Drytac’s Protac Anti-Scratch laminate instead. David McDonald continues: “In our tests at the workshop it was hard to make any marks whatsoever — whatever we tried attacking it with!” Following the successful testing of the Drytac film, Poppy Signs returned to the customer to replace the graphics. “We stripped the glass partition and reapplied the whole graphic, this time finishing it with Drytac Protac Anti-Scratch laminate. The end result was stunning - and didn’t leave the slightest application mark on the material surface. The customer is extremely happy with the new graphics.” Drytac Protac Anti-Scratch PVC laminate is suitable for indoor and outdoor displays in high-traffic areas and for graphics displayed under direct lighting. The high coat-weight and strength of the adhesive makes Protac ideal for laminating over UV inks, as well as solvent, eco-solvent and latex prints. Available in 75µ and 100µ coat weights and a crystal-clear gloss finish or a non-glare matte finish, Drytac’s Protac Anti-Scratch has a non-
marking, anti-scratch surface to prevent damage and blemishes, whilst at the same time offering UV protection when used for outdoor applications. Since first using Drytac Protac Anti-Scratch, Poppy Signs is now using it for all graphics applications that require a durable scratch-resistant finish. David McDonald concludes: “Poppy Signs is now a convert to Drytac laminates. The laminate is very durable and we have full confidence in its scratch-resistance — even for more demanding installations. This product really does do what it says on the tin!” www.poppysigns.co.uk • www.drytac.com

SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Off the Census
A famous Viking explorer returned home from a voyage and found his name missing from the town register. His wife insisted on complaining to the local civic official, who apologised profusely saying, “I must have taken Leif off my census.”
Crazy Laptop
My laptop was driving me crazy. “The A, E, and I keys always stick,” I complained to a friend. She quickly diagnosed the problem, “Your computer is suffering from irritable vowel syndrome.”
Mouth Organ
A newly married sailor was informed by the navy that he was going to be stationed a long way from home on a remote island in the Pacific for a year. A few weeks after he got there he began to miss his new wife, so he wrote her a letter. “My love,” he wrote “we are going to be apart for a very long time. Already I’m starting to miss you and there’s really not much to do here in the evenings. Besides that we’re constantly surrounded by young attractive native girls. Do you think if I had a hobby of some kind I would not be tempted?” So his wife sent him back a harmonica saying, “Why don’t you learn to play this?” Eventually his tour of duty came to an end and he rushed back to his wife. “Darling” he said, “I can’t wait to get you into bed so that we make passionate love!” “First let’s see you play that harmonica!”
The Longest Sentence
One friend says to another, “Did you know that the shortest sentence in the English language is ‘I am’?” “Really?” replies the other. “What’s the longest sentence?” “I do.”
Cutting Stone
Did you hear about the ancient Egyptian man that launched a successful stone quarry business? Turns out it was a pyramid scheme all along.
Tech Support
IT Support: “Hello, this is IT support. What can I help you with today?” User: (describes problem) IT Support: (rattles off computer jargon) User: “Sorry, I don’t understand. Can you explain what I should do as if I were a small child?” IT Support: “Okay... ‘Hi, could you please put your Dad on the phone?”
Sorry About the Weight
My husband was going on a diet, but when we pulled into a fast-food drive in, he ordered a milkshake. I pointed out that a shake isn’t exactly the best snack for someone who wants to lose weight. He agreed, but he didn’t change his order. The long line must have given him time to make the connection between his order and his waistline. As the woman handed him his shake, she said, “Sorry about the wait.” “That’s okay,” he replied. “I’m going to lose it next week.”
Psychic Girlfriend
I almost had a psychic girlfriend… but she left me before we met.
Dog Bite
One day a man is walking down the street when he sees an old man with a nice looking dog. He goes over to the man and asks, “Does your dog bite?” The old man replies, “No, never.” When the man bends down to pet the dog, it immediately takes a snap at his hand. The man says, ‘I thought you said your dog did not bite!” “I did,” replies the old man, “but this isn’t my dog!”
Salad Days
A lettuce and a tomato were in a race. Who won? The lettuce went a head, but the tomato never could ketchup.
Eat my shorts
They have finally found the gene for shyness…it was hiding behind two other genes. I am finally financially set for life... As long as I “go” next Tuesday.
Nothing is impossible… Actually it isn’t, I have been doing it for years! Which country’s capital has the fastest-growing population? Ireland. Every day it’s Dublin! If a word is misspelled in the dictionary…how would we ever know? If you get motion sickness on a DOWN escalator…do you still throwUP?
Silence is Golden
Silence is golden…unless you have children. If that is the case, silence is suspicious.
Married the Longest
At my granddaughter’s wedding reception, the DJ polled the guests to see who had been married longest. It turned out to be my husband and me. The DJ asked us, “What advice would you give to the newly married couple?” I said, “The three most important words in a marriage are, ‘You’re probably right.’ Everyone then looked at my husband. He said, “She’s probably right.”
Caffeine Operated
The chef of the upscale restaurant I manage collided with a waiter one day and spilled coffee all over our computer. The liquid poured into the processing unit, and resulted in some dramatic crackling and popping sounds. After sopping up the mess, we gathered around the terminal as the computer was turned back on. “Please let it work,” pleaded the guilt-ridden waiter. A waitress replied, “Should be faster than ever. That was a double espresso.”
Be Careful
Two mountaineers reached a huge, deep fissure in a glacier. “Careful here,” says one of them. “My mountain guide fell down there last year.” “I bet you felt bad about that,” says the other. He quipped, “Not really, it was pretty old and missing a few pages.”
First Day of School
Tommy had reached school age. His Mum worked hard to make him enthusiastic about the idea. She bought him lots of new clothes, told him of the new friends he’d meet, and so on. The first day of school, he eagerly set off. When he came back home he had a lot of glowing reports about school! Next morning his Mum woke him up saying, “Tommy, it’s time to get ready for school.” Tommy said, “What? Again?”
Special Print Order
A man goes into a copy shop and says, “I would like ten copies of my CV please. “No problem,” comes the reply from behind the counter. “But I want it my way,” says the man. “What do you mean ‘your way’?” asks the copy shop assistant. The man says, “Well, I want the Powerpoint document to run into a different amount of pages than my original. To choose its own typeface and size. Can the columns all get shaken up and add some different colours in the text and background. “I don’t have the time to do all that!” replies the copy shop assistant. “Well you did yesterday!” replied the customer.
The Chicken Joke
First appeared in print in 1847 in a New York magazine called The Knickerbocker, on a page titled “Gossip with Readers and Correspondents.” A reader wrote in: There are “quips and quillets” which seem actual conundrums, but yet are none. Of such is this: “Why does a chicken cross the street?” Are you “out of town?” Do you “give it up?” Well, then: “Because it wants to get on the other side!”
The Tates Watch Company

Ruined My Day
“My Friday is ruined!” “Why, what happened?” “I realised today is Tuesday.”
Finding Inner Beauty
Preparing for a garage sale at our house, my wife and I decided to put out a mirror we’d received as a wedding gift. Because of its garish aqua coloured metal frame we just couldn’t find a room in our house where it looked good. Shortly after the sale started, a man looking to decorate his apartment bought it for one pound. “This is a great deal,” he said excitedly. “It still has the plastic on it.” Then he peeled off the aqua coloured protective covering to reveal a beautiful gold finished frame.
Split vs. Nano
I have discovered the answer to a question that has been puzzling scientists for hundreds of years. What is the exact difference between a split second and a nanosecond? My girlfriend and I were getting ready to go to a fancy dinner when, right as we were about to leave home, my girlfriend asked me the question all guys dread. She asked, “Does this dress look good on me?” If I had said “yes” in a nanosecond, we’d have been out the door. However, since I took a split second before responding, she had to go back up to her wardrobe to change yet again.
A bear walks into a bar and says,
The plan and the policy
In the beginning there was the plan, and then came the assumptions. And the assumptions were without form, and the plan was without substance, and darkness was upon the face of the workers. And the workers spoke amongst themselves, saying, “It is a crock of shit, and it stinks.” And the workers went into their supervisors and said, “It is a pail of dung, and we cannot live with the smell.” And the supervisors went unto their managers, saying, “It is a container of excrement, and it is very strong, such that none may abide by it.” And the managers went to their directors, saying, “It is a vessel of fertiliser, and none may abide its strength.” And the directors spoke amongst themselves, say to one another, “It contains that which aids plant growth, and it is very strong.” And the directors went to the vice-chairman, saying unto them, “It promotes growth and it is very powerful.” And the vice-chairman went to the chairman, saying unto him, “This new plan will actively promote the growth and vigour of the company with very powerful effects.” And the chairman looked upon the plan and saw that it was good, and so the plan became policy. And that, my friends, is how shit happens.

Walk on Water
Dallas, the very confident digital printer salesman, heard that his father, grandfather and greatgrandfather had all walked on water on their 21st birthdays. So, on his 21st birthday, Dallas and his big brother Damon, headed out to the lake. “If they did it, I can too!” he insisted. When Dallas and Damon arrived at the lake, they rented a canoe and began paddling. When they got to the middle of the lake, Dallas stepped off the side of the boat... and nearly drowned. Furious and somewhat embarrassed, he and Damon headed for home. When Dallas arrived back at the family home, he asked his grandmother for an explanation. “Grandma, why can’t I walk on water like my father, and his father, and his father before him?” His sweet old grandmother took Dallas by the hand, looked into his eyes, and explained, “That’s because your father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather were born in January. You, my dear, were born in June.”
A Duck and a Chicken
A duck is standing next to a busy road, cars zooming past while he waits for a break in traffic. A chicken walks up to him and says, “Don’t do it, man. You’ll never hear the end of it.”

Everyone has a photographic memory... Some just still keep it on film... And they never develop it.

A tourist was being led through the swamps of Florida. “Is it true,” the tourist asked, “that an alligator won’t attack you if you carry a flashlight?” “That depends,” replied the guide, “on how fast you carry the flashlight.”
