Tapestry’s investment impresses National clients Treading the boards at Sign & Digital UK, a lot of companies went to the exhibition with one objective in mind – to get a good deal on a wide format digital printer. As most regular visitors to the show already know, Sign & Digital UK is the show in the UK where you can annually compare all major brands, see them in action under one roof and get the best deal on any new wide format digital print and imaging equipment. Tapestry is one of the UK’s most well established media production agencies in the UK and celebrated their 40th anniversary this year. Based in the dynamic Clerkenwell area of London, Tapestry’s print department has a wealth of experience working with some of the world’s leading photographers, galleries and designers and count Alison Jackson, Phase Eight, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and the National Theatre amongst their impressive client list. Their unique combination of traditional dark room skills and state of the art technology allows them to work on an array of different projects that range from fine art and photographic work, to window displays and UK wide graphic installations. Following demonstrations and samples they shortlisted the printers they wanted to have a good look at. And knowing all the machines they looked at would be at the exhibition, they went to Sign & Digital UK at the NEC in April this year to get the best deal. Brendan McMullan, Production manager of Tapestry Print explains; “We conducted a good amount of desk research and had whittled it down to two machines. There really wasn’t much in it so we were able to nip up to the NEC, take a good look around and shop for the best deal. We found the right print and cut solution for our Tapestry Print division in the Mimaki CJV 30-160 and purchased it from Granthams, exhibiting at the show.” Tapestry specialises in Lambda and Giclée prints and their brand new Mimaki CJV30-160 allows them to offer many more services including metallic prints, pull-up stand graphics, contra vision, wallpapers and much more. McMullan continues; “Part of our buying decision was centred around quality and time control and by bringing our wide format inkjet print requirements in house we were able to reduce turnaround times and become more cost competitive. We’d purchased our very first Canon inkjet from Granthams and their service was very reliable so it was an easy decision in the end to buy from them at the show. We were also able to research new medias and techniques while we were at Sign & Digital UK so it was well worthwhile. We’ve since completed many projects using the new printer including two high profile exhibitions for the National Theatre.” Kirsty Reader, Sales manager for Granthams comments; “We’ve always found Sign & Digital UK a very rewarding show to exhibit at and every year use it to show the best deals around on wide format inkjet printing and medias to our customers and visitors. It’s always a hub of activity from the first day and we’re glad to talk to anyone who has concerns regarding their wide format print and signage hardware requirements. Tapestry is a great example of why this exhibition is so important to both sides of our community, not only do they get to explore, compare and contrast products, meet friends and colleagues, but we, as exhibitors, also have lots of time to demonstrate products, provide training, offer special show pricing and discuss trends and issues with them. Sign & Digital UK is a perfect platform to do this on an annual basis in the UK, compared to expensive overseas shows where you just get manufacturers exhibiting that can’t really offer good “deals” for the discerning UK buyer and signmaker.” Alan Caddick, Marketing manager for Sign & Digital UK agrees; “Sign and Digital UK has always been a “buyers” show. As the only national annual show for the UK signmaker and print and imaging provider, we feel we have an obligation to our visitors to deliver a great show with interesting exhibitors. We encourage them to offer on stand demonstrations, special offers, competitions, training, workshops and much more. We will be building on the successes of Sign & Digital UK 2012 throughout year to help our visitors get even more from their visit to next years’ show.” For more information about Tapestry print, visit www.tapestry.co.uk/print.

Case study 1: National Theatre War Horse exhibition Following the success of last years exhibition for The Linbury stage design awards, Tapestry Print were thrilled to be asked by The National Theatre to produce an interactive exhibition promoting the making of War Horse. This exhibition, named ‘Staging War Horse’, tells the full story of War Horse’s journey from the first early workshops to becoming one of the most successful stage productions in history. War Horse, based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, is a powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and magnificent artistry. Through designs, costume, models, puppets and film, the exhibition is able to chart the groundbreaking collaboration with the Handspring Puppet Company and shows how the creation involved every production department within the National Theatre. The display comprises of four large, floor to ceiling pods constructed of MDF, which were assembled by the stage set team. Due to the shape of the units, we recommended and subsequently produced Digimura wallpaper graphics and optically clear vinyl for the base of the graphics, using our wide format Mimaki CJV30-160. Foamex mounted panels and captions were then affixed to the surface as directed, along with tension wire supports installed in display cases. Additional information panels and FOH boards were prepared and installed at designated points. War Horse is currently in its fourth smash-hit year in the West End and performing to sold out audiences in New York, Toronto, and on US tour, this landmark theatre event has been seen by over two million people worldwide. To buy tickets to see this fantastic production, visit: nationaltheatre.org.uk/ buytickets
Case study 2: National Theatre The Making of Timon exhibition Tapestry Print were thrilled to be involved with The Making of Timon exhibition currently being displayed in the National Theatre. Following previous successes working for the National Theatre, we were pleased to be asked to assist in the staging of the exhibition. The Making of Timon, is a showcase of the play Timon of Athens. The play has been brought into modern times with the help of Nicholas Hytner as producer, to give the play a contemporary feel and relevance. The exhibition illustrates the history behind the Shakespearian play, as well as original designs, vivid backstage and rehearsal photography. The method we used for the War Horse exhibition was so well received, it was decided that Timon would be prepared in the same manner. The display comprises of four large, floor to ceiling pods constructed of MDF, which were assembled by the stage set team. Using our Mimaki CJV30-160, we produced Digimura wallpaper graphics and optically clear vinyl for the base of the graphics. Fomaex mounted panels and captions were then affixed to the surface as directed, along with tension wire supports installed in display cases. Additional information panels and FOH boards were prepared and installed at designated points.

ROLAND DG’s new Creative Centre opens Following the completion of phase one of its showroom overhaul, Roland DG’s Creative Centre at its Clevedon headquarters is now open for visitors. Visitors to the new Creative Centre can see first hand the enormous versatility of Roland’s digital printing, engraving and 3D milling technology in a vast showcase of moneymaking applications. Everything from the centre’s ceiling tiles to the windows has been printed using Roland wide format technology, while the shelves are adorned with examples of high value applications produced with its engraving, printing and milling technologies, from personalised gifts to 3D prototypes, dental crowns and bridges. All commercial printers and sign and display businesses searching for their next big idea are invited to the Creative Centre to see high value applications such as personalised wallpapers, metallic signs, printed roller blinds, personalised sportswear, vehicle wraps, packaging prototypes and precisely engraved trophies, tags and gifts. The diverse range of markets represented includes jewellery, packaging, labelling, textile printing, promotional gift, engraving, dental, funeral and 3D modelling. One of the features guaranteed to turn heads is the ceiling where every single panel is a different colour taken from the Roland Color System Library. Joe Wigzell, Roland’s Creative Centre and Roland Academy Manager, said: “The Creative Centre is an inspirational place for the innovative and interesting – as well as the more classic applications our equipment is capable of producing. Visitors may already have a Roland and be seeking their next best seller, or they may be investigating adding another string to their bow with easy to use engraving technology. Whatever they’re looking for, nowhere else in the UK is the massive versatility of digital technology better represented in a single place than the Roland Creative Centre.
“The focus is on applications rather than the technology with the aim that when customers see it, they believe it and - hopefully – are inspired to achieve it. There is a lot of crossover between Roland technologies. It makes sense for sign and display printers, for example, to explore ways to diversify by investing in an engraver – it’s still personalisation and customers looking for corporate branded shirts could also require an engraved award, a sign for the door, or an engraved pen for a thank you gift. Roland believes
in the power of sharing ideas. I’m always happy to show people around the Roland Creative Centre and they’re welcome to bring along files for testing or indeed to showcase their own finished masterpieces.” Roland’s Creative Centre is an on-going project that will be added to as customers share their latest ideas and creations on the Roland Forum (www.rolandforum.co.uk) or through competitions such as the Roland Creative Awards, which took place earlier this year. The Roland Creative Awards received over 1,000 entries from around the world from Roland customers sharing their best pieces of work and many UK entries are now featured in the Roland Creative Centre. Have you created a work of art you’d like to share with Roland? If you’d like your work featured in the Creative Centre, with your name and company details proudly displayed alongside, email marketing@rolanddg.co.uk with details and a picture.

Proskills launches eighth PrintIT competition Proskills UK has launched the eighth annual PrintIT! competition to encourage students to consider careers in the print and paper industries following great feedback and success from the 2011 / 12 programme. The PrintIT! Initiative, which aims to show students, teachers and parents that print and paper industries are advanced, exciting, dynamic and provide a good career choice is targeted at students studying GCSE and A Level Graphic Products and Product Design, and the Diplomas in Manufacturing and Product Design as well as GCSE and A Level Media studies and those working towards the Diploma in Creative and Media. The launch of the 2012 / 13 programme coincides with the academic year and is open for registration at any point during the school term. The results of a survey from participating 2011/12 schools demonstrates how the initiative continues to meet its objectives and has become a valuable aid to teachers. The survey concluded that 92% of teachers said they thought PrintIT! gave students a better insight into the career possibilities of print and paper industries and 84% of teachers thought their students enjoyed taking part in the PrintIT! programme. One parent said “What a great initiative PrintIT! is, It’s easy to think about careers such as accounting or medicine but this initiative is opening up children’s minds to other careers out there that are easily dismissed.” Furthermore, after taking part in the PrintIT! competition the number of participating students interested in a career or some work experience in the industries doubled. Nigel Hawke, from TJ International, Winner of the Best Twinner Award 2011/2012 told us “UK manufacturing as a whole urgently needs more schemes like this and at TJ International we are proud to be associated with the ground breaking PrintIT!-scheme Long may it continue!”. Since its launch in 2005, over 110,000 students have participated in the curriculum mapped competition to create a print based promotional campaign introducing students to today’s dynamic, IT intensive printing industry and the wide variety of careers it offers. PrintIT! also includes an innovative “twinning” programme that adds a vocational element by introducing schools to local print businesses eager to give students the chance to experience the industry at first hand. Schools have the opportunity to twin with either a printer or paper manufacturer in their local area via a new interactive section of the PrintIT! website (www.printit.org.uk) Teachers will be able to locate the 20 nearest twinning partners to their school and contact them directly to arrange a twinning visit. Tony Lock, PrintIT! Chairman and Managing Director of Duplo UK said “Our world is changing and print and paper, like many industries, are deeply affected by these changes. For print and paper to adapt to this new world and thrive we need a pool of young, enthusiastic talent. We all know we have two wonderful industries. It’s only by us all engaging with schools, exciting these young people and showing them what dynamic and creative industries print and paper are, that we will attract the best talent to come and work in our industries. We are very fortunate to have a readymade vehicle for this – PrintIT! PrintIT! is a hugely important programme in our future and every printer, print related business and paper company needs to get involved. We need printers and paper companies taking an active role in engaging with their local schools and signing up to the Twinning programme. We must build on the excellent work over the last seven years and strive to get more and more schools involved. It is only by us all driving this ‘grass roots’ type of activity that we will have the chance to compete with other industries and encourage young people to channel their abilities into a career in the print and paper industries.” Ian Aspley, General Manager at Proskills UK concluded “PrintIT! offers a significant opportunity for suppliers, printers and paper companies to be associated with what has become the UK’s largest Schools into Industry Programme. It helps to attract young people into the industry by getting them involved in this dynamic programme and raises their understanding of what an exciting and ever developing industry print and paper is.” Following the success of PrintIT! Proskills has also launched other ‘Schools into Industry Programmes’ covering the Furniture and Wood industries, all programmes are mapped to relevant parts of the 14-19 curriculum and are designed to fit in with school curriculums. Further details of these programmes can be found at www.theits.org.uk.

CHROMOLUX LAUNCHES ‘MORE WITH LESS’ CHALLENGE Win a stylish ‘miniki – Chromolux special edition’ – the mini kitchen in a sideboard - for your studio or office. Chromolux, the premium range of high glossy papers and boards, invites you to enter the ‘more with less’ challenge by demonstrating how your designs, packaging, products or print use fewer resources but achieve more impact. The winners will receive one of five stylish Chromolux special edition mini kitchens in a sideboard – the “miniki” – which embody the spirit of ‘more with less’. “Natural resources are becoming increasingly scarce, and there is a growing need to treat the environment responsibly by using less in all areas of life. It is a global trend, highlighted by future watchers,” says Christian Drissler of Metsä Board Zanders, makers of Chromolux. “But what at first sight seems like a restriction, can actually lead to a release of creativity.” Entries are welcome from graphic designers, printers and brand owners across Europe. An entry can be a finished piece of work, a mock-up or a concept, but it must meet the challenge of achieving quality by means of reduction to the essential. The closing date is 20 November 2012, following which a jury panel will decide on the five winners. Chromolux has recently reacted to the trend by streamlining its own range of high glossy, cast-coated papers, label papers and boards, ensuring its most popular colours and weights are given priority. It has made selection of the right product easier, with two collections – one for paper; one for board – and a handy fan swatch. The “miniki” is a mini kitchen reduced to the basics and hidden in an elegant sideboard. As a riposte to our throwaway society, the designers of “miniki” chose materials that embody sustainability and durability. Even its appearance is minimalistic and it can fit into the smallest space. The “miniki” design has recently won a “red dot award”. www.miniki.eu To enter the ‘more with less’ challenge and for full terms and conditions go to: www.chromolux.de/challenge
Morgana AeroCut Quatro at JD Printing Morgana Systems has announced details of its first UK AeroCut Quatro installation. The multi-function finishing device has been installed at JD Printing Services, Farnborough, and is working alongside both Konica and Presstek print devices to provide fast and efficient finishing. JD Printing is just three people big, meaning that fast, automated post-press is a welcome investment according to Jimmy Dalton, managing director of the printing operation: “It’s a push button device with a host of pre-programmed finishing operations stored into it. We can simply select the programme, load in the printed sheets, push the button and then leave it to carry out its cutting, creasing, and perforating tasks.” Whilst simple operations such as business card trimming are at the top of the list of finishing tasks at JD Printing, the company is also looking at a wide range of additional work that it intends to promote in the very near future. “We have started marketing personalised playing cards,” said Jimmy Dalton.
“Customers love something as unique and different as that, and the AeroCut makes the finishing of such products straightforward, fast and easy.” Capable of handling the full print project from graphic design through to the finished product, further information on JD Printing Services can be found at: www.jdprinting.com The machine, manufactured by Uchida in Japan, provides for variable cutting, slitting and creasing of products, and includes a perforation module as standard. Capable of handling sheet sizes of up to 365 x 520mm in standard mode and 900mm in flexible mode, the AeroCut Quatro is able to produce a wide range of finished products from its pre-programmed templates or from bespoke templates for specific non-standard jobs. Cutting accuracy of the AeroCut is ensured through the use of a register mark detection system. This system reads the image position on the sheet ensuring a perfect cut every time, whilst the creasing mechanism is fully adjustable to accommodate different thicknesses of stock. An optional side/ stop perforating attachment can be added to allow perforation in both directions on the sheet. At the recent drupa show the AeroCut Quatro was demonstrated using a unique plug-in to Adobe Illustrator, whereby the machine cutting and creasing parameters can be sent directly from the desktop to the device ensuring accurate set-up relative to the printed job. www.morgana.co.uk

Silver Bullet chooses Epson SureColor Event and retail display graphics specialist Silver Bullet (www.sbsg.co.uk) has installed one of the UK’s first Epson SureColor SCS30600 wide format inkjet printers at its new walk-in service point in Sandy, Bedfordshire. The 64-inch (162.6cm), four colour, roll fed machine was supplied by Epson reseller Spandex, and joins a Summa plotter and laminator. Sandy is the first of a network of large format digital print walk-in centres that Silver Bullet will be rolling out over the coming months and plans to franchise. “It’s always been our ambition to open a chain of print shops and take control of digital print services in-house,” says MD Matthew Kingsford. “We want the best of both worlds: the ability to produce some fast turnaround, high quality signage products in-house, while still working with our partners to supply litho and screen print. In addition to servicing major retail clients with European wide projects, we can now also provide a service to smaller local companies on a walk-in basis.” The company’s strong focus on customer care has attracted some well known customers, including energy drinks company Monster Energy. “We produce a lot of event material for Monster Energy, often within tight deadlines,” says Matthew. A recent high profile event was the Monster Energy rig at the MotoGP in Le Mans in May for which Silver Bullet produced event graphics (to see this in action go to http://youtu.be/p-y2nFVtrmA). “We
welcome any brief – the more challenging the better – and like to come up with creative ideas and solutions.” “Spandex know our business very well and give us a lot of support. They handle everything, from recommending, installing and integrating the hardware and software to providing full training, after care and consumables supply,” says Matthew. “They strongly recommended the new Epson SureColor SC-S30600 for its versatility, reliability, productivity and quality. These criteria are essential to the walk-in concept. We often don’t know what the next job is until the customer comes through the door, so we need a printer we can rely on to produce high quality work, quickly, on a wide range of media.” Launched earlier this year, the SureColor SC-S30600 sets a new price/ performance ratio in a highly competitive sector, delivering efficient, environmentally friendly production at the lowest total cost of ownership. Epson has designed the new printer to be fast and easy to set up and use. Loading heavy media rolls, usually a two person job, can be handled by one operator with ease thanks to a unique jack device. Media tensioning, traditionally only accessible from the front of the printer, is controllable from both front and rear, so operators do not waste time going back and forth. This reduces set-up time and maximises productivity. www.epson.eu

Pantone’s Fashion Colour report Spring 2013 Soothing Neutrals and Energising Brights Create the Perfect Balance for Spring Pantone - the global authority on colour and provider of professional colour standards for the design industries has unveiled the PANTONE Fashion Colour Report Spring 2013, a comprehensive overview of designers’ use of colour in their upcoming collections. Released on the first day of New York Fashion Week, the PANTONE Fashion Colour Report features the top 10 colours for womens and mens fashion for spring 2013, along with designer sketches, quotes and headshots. The report is available for free download atwww.pantone.com/spring2013. “The expression ‘balancing act’ is something we all relate to as we strive to find harmony in the frantic pace of our everyday lives,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute. “The same can be said for fashion as we look for balance between light and bright, classic and new. This season’s colour palette emphasises this need for balance, while at the same time allowing for individuality, self-expression and excitement.” The top colours for womens fashion for spring 2013 are: PANTONE 14-0446 Tender Shoots; PANTONE 14-6011 Grayed Jade; PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald; PANTONE 16-3520 African Violet; PANTONE 17-1664 Poppy Red; PANTONE 161360 Nectarine; PANTONE 13-0756 Lemon Zest; PANTONE 16-4120 Dusk Blue; PANTONE 12-1008 Linen; PANTONE 19-3964 Monaco Blue. The top colours for mens fashion for spring 2013 are:: PANTONE 14-0210 Tidal Foam; PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald; PANTONE 14-6011 Grayed Jade; PANTONE 16-4120 Dusk Blue; PANTONE 19-3964 Monaco Blue; PANTONE 163915 Alloy; PANTONE 12-1008 Linen; PANTONE 17-1664 Poppy Red; PANTONE 16-1364 Vibrant Orange; PANTONE 16-1054 Sunflower
Women’s Palette This season, designers overwhelmingly address consumers’ desire for self-expression, balance and the need to re-energise. The colour direction for spring builds upon these compelling needs with a palette that mixes dynamic brights with novel neutrals to create a harmonious balance. This allows for unique combinations that offer practicality and versatility, but at the same time, demand attention and earn an appreciative glance. The prevalence of green this spring is undeniable. Similar to the many shades in our natural surroundings, this season’s greens offer a stunning foreground or the perfect backdrop for all other hues. Like the first signs of spring, Tender Shoots, a vibrant yellow-green, is invigorating, active and cheerful, while Grayed Jade, a subtle, hushed green with a gray undertone, brings about a mood of quiet reflection and repose. Sophisticated Emerald, a lively, radiant green, inspires insight and clarity while enhancing our sense of well-being. From one extreme to the other, combining all three greens presents an intriguing choice much like Mother Nature intended. Exotic African Violet is a statement colour that brings a touch of intrigue to the palette, as purples often do, and can be incorporated into many unexpected combinations. Try pairing it with exuberant Poppy Red, a seductive, sensual and celebratory shade. Whether it’s a knockout dress or a kiss on the lips, every woman’s wardrobe and beauty essentials should include this spirited, true red.
Nectarine, a bright, effervescent citrus orange with coral undertones, provides a tangy burst of flavor while cheerful Lemon Zest brings out a piquant taste with its refreshing, spritely greenish cast. Signifying the time of day when everything starts to wind down, Dusk Blue offers a calming sense of serenity akin to its green counterpart, Grayed Jade. Both of these colours act as the season’s newest neutrals. For an unexpected mix, pair Dusk Blue with the intensity of Nectarine. A warm neutral, Linen is light and airy, providing a nude like basic that is a must have for spring. Try pairing Linen with Grayed Jade or Dusk Blue. Anchoring Monaco Blue is a classic shade that offers both stability and depth to the entire palette. Combine Monaco Blue with Poppy Red and Linen, or Monaco Blue and Emerald for a fresh collegiate look.
Men’s Palette Similar to the women’s palette, the menswear colours for spring emphasise the need for balance with soothing neutrals accented by an array of energising brights. As the name implies, Tidal Foam is reminiscent of the sea washing onto the shore, driven by the force of the waves. With its slight hint of green, it’s this spring’s answer to khaki as the perfect neutral. Emerald remains a powerful and brilliant jewel tone, perfect for men’s accessories and sportswear. Grayed Jade, a subtle, hushed green, as well as Dusk Blue, reminiscent of the calming tones of an evening sky, both act as staple, yet novel neutrals. Monaco Blue naturally has an air of masculinity, providing stability and depth to the palette. Pair it with Grayed Jade and Emerald for a strong, classic mixture. Alloy, a reliable mid-tone gray, is a necessity for spring. An easy, lightweight alternative to black for the warmer months, Alloy makes a strong statement without the weight. Linen, an off-white, complexion flattering hue, pairs well with many colours. Look for it combined with Grayed Jade, Alloy or Monaco Blue for classic combinations that balance light, mid and deep tones. Dynamic and exciting Poppy Red plays a vital role in men’s fashion trends for spring and summer. Vibrant Orange, an animated, striking hue, provides vigor and enthusiasm. The robust yellow found in Sunflower offers an earthy, Dijon-like flavor, that when combined with Emerald and Monaco Blue, creates a sophisticated update to a familiar combination. Colours featured in the PANTONE Fashion Colour Report Spring 2013 are available as cotton swatch card sets featuring 4” x 4” loose-format swatch cards of all 10 colours in each palette. Each 10 card set is available for GBP £80.00 at www.pantone.com/womenspring2013 for the women’s palette set and www.pantone.com/menspring2013 for the men’s palette set. The complete report is available for free download at www.pantone.com/spring2013.

New Mimaki JFX500-2131 Incorporating a raft of technological breakthroughs, the launch of the Mimaki JFX500-2131 heralds a new benchmark in high quality, environmentally advantageous and high volume UV printing. At printing speeds up to 60 square metres per hour, the JFX500-2131 is 2.5 times faster than conventional JFX printers from Mimaki and brings new efficiency, quality and price/performance to the sign and graphics industry and wide format display marketplace. The JFX500-2131 is due for release this autumn. The new Mimaki flatbed incorporates a new print head and advanced LED curing to produce an exceptionally high resolution image quality. This innovative, user friendly flatbed printer offers multiple ink options for the ultimate in production flexibility. The Mimaki LUS-150 ink is a newly formulated CMYK LED curing ink with high speed curing properties and is flexible up to 150%. This results in increased elasticity on a wide variety of media and substrates without cracking or fracturing the cured ink during handling, cutting or other post-print processing. The JFX500-2131 also operates with Mimaki’s existing LH-100 CMYK inks; a more rigid ink formulation for printing on hard surfaces requiring greater adhesion properties. The printer can also utilise Mimaki’s LF-140 flexible ink which is available in six colours. All these ink formulations also offer white ink. Use of the Mimaki Circulation Technology (MCT) ensures ultra-high performance in white ink printing and this feature regularly circulates white ink, enabling stable output by eliminating settling of white pigment in the ink lines. Additionally, MCT contributes to reduction of ink waste, thereby supporting environmentally and economically friendly applications. Mimaki’s Degassing
Module (MDM) also eliminates gas or bubbles inside the ink, reducing nozzle blockage and improving accuracy of ink dot placement. This enables the printer to use Mimaki’s bottled inks instead of conventional degassed ink packs, further reducing ink costs. Using LED UV curing, the JFX500-2131 delivers high speed UV printing with all of the advantages of LED technology, including long life, energy savings, lower heat generation, the ability to use thinner, more cost effective media and printing on heat sensitive media that cannot be utilised with conventional UV curing systems. Equipped with Mimaki’s new print engine (six print heads in a three staggered configuration), the JFX500-2131 achieves print speeds of up to 60 m2/h with CMYK, and 45 m2/h for white ink printing. The printer includes two units of Mimaki’s highly accurate linear scales controlled by an Intelligent Microstepping System (IMS) for fine step accuracy and dot placement. This results in far less banding artefacts and the ability to print legible two point characters on most media. Variable drop functionality simultaneously produces three different drop sizes – the minimum drop size is just four pico-litres which results in a smooth, natural gradation and Mimaki’s proprietary head control technology delivers unrivalled high definition and high resolution prints. The Mimaki Advanced Pass System (MAPS) further ensures a high print quality with multiple printing passes, using a gradational mask pattern. When this option is selected, UV curing is performed more gradually which diminishes any appearance of banding. Available through Hybrid’s network of authorised resellers, the Mimaki JFX500-2131 will be available to view this autumn. Kodak Nexpress at Photokina
At Photokina 2012, Kodak showcased its latest photo solutions to help retailers, professional photo labs, photo service providers and commercial printers maximise business growth and attract new customers through high value applications. One of the focal points of the Kodak booth was the live printing demonstrations on the KODAK NEXPRESS Photo Platform. Designed for printing high quality photo products, the NEXPRESS Platform with the KODAK NEXPRESS Fifth Imaging Unit Solution delivers comprehensive capabilities for digital output. KODAK NEXPRESS presses have been a leader in the photo book category for a number of years, providing printers with growing revenue opportunities for high value printing. During the show, Kodak demonstrated new applications for photo merchandise producers by showing how a retail customer can submit a digital photo project through a KODAK Picture Kiosk and how the job moves seamlessly into the KODAK Digital Fulfillment System (Kodak DFS) for payment and routing to the NEXPRESS Platform for production. While the NEXPRESS Platform has always been an open architecture platform, this marks the first time retailers and photo service providers will be able to capture print sales from a KODAK Picture Kiosk and remotely move the digital file to the NEXPRESS Platform, using Kodak DFS to effectively manage the workflow throughout the process. Kodak also demonstrated how retailers can capture digital print jobs from their customers’ KODAK Create at Home Software, KODAK Creative Production Software and even the My KODAK MOMENTS app on the
Facebook site. By pushing digital print jobs into the Kodak DFS, lab client, and onto the NEXPRESS Photo Platform, printers will find that they have plenty of additional opportunities to capture new business. Printing on more than 800 substrates and enabling duplex printing with ease, the KODAK NEXPRESS Photo Platform provides printers with exceptional photo quality output, including hard and soft cover photo books, calendars, greeting cards, 4x6 prints and more. All NEXPRESS presses feature Print Genius, a suite of productivity and quality control tools and options that automate tasks and help users maintain peak quality throughout their production run. NEXPRESS Presses also offer unique field upgradability, which minimises risk and avoids technology obsolescence. “The KODAK NEXPRESS Platform can help photo retailers differentiate their photo merchandising offerings and improve their bottom line overall,” said Greg Gresock, Kodak’s Director of Marketing for Electrophotographic Printing Solutions. “By combining the proven quality and extensive capabilities of the NEXPRESS Press with new ways to receive digital photo jobs, retailers will find that they can better serve their existing customers and take advantage of new market opportunities to grow their business.” Detailed product information can be found at www.kodak.com/go/ nexpress, along with video on the NEXPRESS Platform.

Duplo rocks the O2
Duplo invites you to a British Music experience in London in November.
F
ollowing the success of London Calling 3D at the BFI IMAX in 2011, Duplo International has announced that the next chapter in the London Calling event series will be at the British Music Experience in the O2. The event, titled ‘LONDON CALLING ROCKS’ taking place on 6th and 7th November 2012 will see Duplo working in partnership with a
number of strategic digital print, prepress and post-press partners. Full list to be announced shortly. The show is dubbed as a digital relaunch for Duplo, with a number of new products being launched to the UK market, including the new hybrid Duetto DBMi Saddle System and the versatile, production DC-745 with Integrated Folding System. The theme of ‘Rock’ gives visitors a clue to the type of applications that will be finished at the event, and the show’s exclusive VIP evening on Tuesday 6th November is set to be the social event of the print industry calendar for 2012. Andy Pike, UK Marketing Manager comments: “Our digital offering has evolved a lot over the last few years and this year’s London Calling will see the fruition of a lot of these developments. “The London Calling event series has been a major success for Duplo and we are confident this year’s event will break all previous records. Having seen the attendance rise year on year,
the British Music Experience at the O2 sees us increase our capacity to enable us to hold a bigger and better event for our visitors. “Our shows have broken away from the norm, taking print into a real life environment, producing real life applications, in an engaging and exciting location. Print’s impact in the music industry is well known, and still today, bands use print in
the form of packaging, posters, books and tickets to create powerful products that fans hold huge emotional value to. In particular we have even seen bands use finishing as a method of differentiating themselves from the crowd.” For more information on London Calling, please contact londoncalling@duplointernational. com or call 01932 263 900.

When size really is an issue Scratching his head for inspiration this month Martin Christie shouldn’t have worried there’s always an inexhaustible resource of anecdotes provided by customers…
T
hings can get a little confusing when you cross the copy threshold of A4 or A3. Most people can envisage the size of a letterhead or a double page spread in a magazine. But beyond that scale is often a journey into the unknown. The problem for a printer is that a guesstimate is not enough. If something is required at a specific size, for a specific reason, then you have to be absolutely sure that is what is wanted and not something vaguely in that direction. At A4 a mistake of a couple of millimetres is hardly noticeable, but multiplied by a factor of a hundred, it makes a big difference to something a metre square. And that’s potentially a lot of costly wastage which somebody has to pay for. We print most of our large format images in house so it’s easier to supervise and control any size issues. The majority of print on demand in colour over A3 is for A2 or A1 so a 24inch (61cm) printer meets most tasks. Above that size you have to go for a 42 or 44inch rig which is considerably longer, with the consequent extra size and weight of media. Unless you have a lot of room in the storage and finishing area, an A0 plus printer is not an option for the smaller digital print shop. Despite the fact that you can buy 36inch rolls of paper, which would accommodate that layout, nobody makes a printer of this size for some reason. That’s a shame because it’s a format that would be quite manageable for the single operator. So like a lot of copy shops, we farm out larger prints to a couple of regular suppliers who have more facilities, and it is noticeable that they have become much more pedantic in confirming specifications
down to the exact millimetre. This is almost certainly due to an increasing number of requests being made by customers who have perhaps a restricted understanding of dimensions and scaling. When something was drawn or printed on paper in proportion, the scale was fairly evident. When it exists in the virtual world on a computer screen, it is harder to comprehend, especially by those now with limited practical training or what were traditional hands-on skills. The same experience has taught me to be much more specific in what the customer actually wants, which is not necessarily what he or she is asking for initially. Mind reading is not an easy skill to acquire, but some anticipation is essential. Like a customer asking for a print for framing. I always advise getting the frame first, so that I can then make the print fits the frame, especially as the frame is likely to cost a lot more than the print. One of the consequences of dealing with customers by email rather than over the counter is that you lose the physical presence and the ability to show examples. Therefore you have to assume a certain amount of comprehension at the other end of the electronic game of ping pong. If a customer asks for a particular size, then you might expect that is what they want. So when we got an email enquiry for three by two foot square glossy prints, we sort of assumed that was what the customer actually wanted, especially as it was a previous customer who we knew dealt with rather large items of plant hire machinery like diggers and bulldozers. You would rather hope they knew what 2ft looked like. Just to be sure we checked confirming the size in centimetres to be told yes that was correct. Almost inevitably the digital camera images then sent over were oblong — standard 3 to 4 format — not square as requested, so we checked to see whether they wanted them cropped or printed full size which made them 2ft by 3ft. The images weren’t great quality, but if they were going to be viewed at a distance, on a wall display for example, would be quite acceptable. You can’t second guess the end use that will be made of prints if the customer seems to know what they are asking for. Perplexing, then to receive an email a couple of days later complaining that the prints were far too big — to quote “we didn’t think 2ft by 3ft would

I have illustrated the difference between pixel resolution and spacial resolution in a simple visual. Both these images (the truck to the left and the boot pictured here) have similar pixel quotas but there is a massive difference in the actual quality of the produced image. One, taken in difficult light conditions, of a large and detailed piece of machinery, struggles to identify individual items clearly, particularly in the poorly lit areas of the image. This is typical of digital image problems because of the way the processor in the camera reads the viewed image and interprets information. There is no pixelisation effect – actual gaps in the colours – normally seen with a lack of pixels common with images downloaded from the internet. It’s just that enlarged, despite having a lot of pixels, it is not particularly clear. In contrast, the product shot of the boot, taken at close quarters in ideal studio lighting conditions which gives an even coverage across the whole image, reveals intense detail, even when reduced in physical size for use on a website. In the last couple of issues I have used examples of digital images taken with extreme zoom lens on current cameras models – the ginger cat and the seagull on the chimney pot. The impressive thing about them, and it is down to the camera technology, is the actual quality and clarity which could not have been achieved without professional kit even a few years ago with digital equipment. This is important to consider in relation to the relative quality of digital images submitted for printing, because without access to the original camera data – originally embedded as metadata in the image file – you will not know how old the file is, what it was taken with, or what has been done to it since it was originally taken. All you may be able to recover is when it was last modified or saved. By this you may be unintentionally hoodwinked by a customer who can produce a previous print which is so much better than the one you are now outputting. This of course will be your fault, something you are doing wrong. But unless you are absolutely certain you are using the same file – and able to match the same printer profile and media – you may be a long way from be this HUGE”. Apparently they were expecting something a third of the size? Well two foot has always been twenty four inches since I was a lad, I don’t think decimalisation made any difference to that. Note to self: next time you hire a digger from these people make sure it’s not a Tonka toy. As well as demanding some sort of recompense because the prints weren’t exactly what the customer was expecting further comments were made about the prints “not being very clear”. This is also a common misunderstanding related to size and proportion, which involves clarity, sharpness and resolution — three things that are all part of an image but not necessarily the same thing. As a photographer and printer, the prints to me were extremely clear. What the clarity revealed was the poor quality of the original image despite the fact that the resolution had been upped to adjust to the eventual output. Although resolution is often a guide to how clear or sharp an image may appear when printed, it is essentially just a count of the number of effective pixels contained in an image, not a definite guide to the quality of eventual reproduction. The latter is defined by what is called spatial resolution, not pixel resolution, and can been simplified as the ability to distinguish separate visual information in an image such as details and fine patterns. The spatial resolution of computer monitors is generally 72 to 100 lines per inch, corresponding to pixel resolutions

matching a previous print colour for colour, pixel for pixel. Because I deal with a lot of artists who are, shall I say, quite particular about their colours, I try to print from files I have archived, together with little notes on print options, rather than discs they bring in and may have copied or modified, by accident or design. I learnt to be cautious quite early on when I had a customer who had some arty images of balloons taken with lots of brightly coloured lights shining on them. All very pretty but I couldn’t get any of the reds or blues – the most notorious culprits – anywhere near the sample prints provided. It was only by digging into the metadata I spotted the original images were taken in 2003 – years before – and that I was not dealing with the originals but files copied and saved as Jpegs of assorted quality a number of times. In that process an indeterminate amount of colour information had been discarded, so the printer -although much more sophisticated than that which produced the original samples – just could not reproduce the same tones because the digital code required was just not there. Adobe say that the Tiff is the most stable file format long term, and when scanning I always use it for saving unless requested otherwise. At least that’s as much as we know at the moment before the digital revolution clocks up another decade. The Tiff retains a considerable amount of information, albeit at the cost of file size, but there is no alternative if quality is to be retained. Customers have to be educated that compression and reduction of file size may be convenient, but it does come at a cost. As with Jpegs, the ubiquitous PDF has continuing issues which are time consuming to resolve and often baffle the creator. A recent client of some rather expensive silverware wasn’t entirely happy with the colour hue on her rather nice glossy posters. But as they were just photos of the products, with no additional design or text added, I had to query why they hadn’t been provided as photo files. Being a designer, the original images had been imported into InDesign to lay up, then exported as a PDF, so I was effectively printing a third generation image. We know all about that problem from copy shop days ! Plus ca change toujours la meme as the french say. of 72 to 100 pp, which is why images may appear clear or artificially sharp, particularly on a small screen. But as we know the printer needs at least four times more pixel information to reproduce the same dot equivalent regardless of the apparent quality of the output. Image sharpness is simply the contrast between one part of an image and an adjacent one, which is why sharpening an image on the computer with software like Photoshop may result in more definition between one pixel and another, but produce unacceptable print quality, especially when used on people. ‘Visual’ is the key word in all of this because we try to produce a hard copy that is acceptable to the eye — even if sometimes not always to the customer — from what is essentially a virtual source. But as we often reflect, what we are trying to print isn’t real in itself, but the real representation of a series of binary numbers. As a boffin from one of the big firms once admitted to me in considering what the machines have to do “it’s amazing anything comes out at all”. The continuing dilemma for the digital print house is that in making digital imaging capture and creation so accessible to the average consumer, the practical issues involved in the creation of real print are only barely understood by most customers and rarely considered. There is an expectation of convenience not always matched by possibility. After all, if you can’t rely on a foot being twelve inches, what can you rely on?

Two Sides promotion “No Wonder You Love Paper” is the theme of a new campaign from Two Sides, the international organisation which promotes the responsible use of print and paper as an attractive, powerful and natural communications medium. The campaign features the attractiveness and sustainability of magazines and newspapers. Research by Two Sides has revealed consumers are surprised to learn that: • Almost 70% of paper across Europe is collected and recycled. In fact it’s one of the most recycled materials of all. • Forests in Europe, which provide wood for making into paper and many other widely used materials, are 30% larger than in 1950. In fact they’re increasing by 1.5 million football pitches every year! Martyn Eustace, Director of Two Sides, comments, “This is a really important campaign which is urgently needed to correct consumer misunderstandings. Our research tells us that magazine and newspaper readers are unaware of the industry’s great record on recycling and that European forests, where the majority of raw material is sourced, are actually growing in size. 80% of UK consumers prefer reading from paper than reading off a screen and we want to let them know the facts about the industry’s record on important environmental issues”. Barry McIlheney, CEO of the Professional Publishers Association (PPA) states: “We live in a multi-media world and readers now look for a choice of media channels. Print is still vital for magazine publishers and offers a unique reading experience that will live on. We want to make sure that, in choosing a printed magazine, readers fully understand that print media also offers a natural reading experience and can be a sustainable way to read”. David Newell, Director of the Newspaper Publishers Association (NPA) comments, “Newspapers still dominate the news media landscape and we need to ensure that our readers understand the environmental facts concerning the paper we use. We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and this campaign helps to get the good messages about forests and recycling into the public domain”. The campaign will continue to run throughout 2012 and is supported by a new website, www.youlovepaper.info which sets out the environmental facts about the
industry, features a fun quiz and offers the opportunity to win prizes in a ‘share your paper experience’ video competition.
The Wheel Deal in Green Papers Arjowiggins Graphic - manufacturer of innovative environmental paper solutions launches its “It feels good” wheel, which allows printers, designers and businesses to easily understand the savings that they can make by printing on recycled papers. The wheel is an extension of the “It feels good” campaign that was launched last October. The campaign successfully communicates the positive impacts that using recycled papers has on businesses and their brands. The wheel continues in that vein and explains the savings that business can make by choosing to print on papers from Arjowiggins Graphic. The wheel, which is approximately C5 in size, focuses on Arjowiggins Graphic’s Environmental Benefits Statements, which demonstrate – in a clear visual manner – the tangible, positive effects of using post consumer recycled paper rather than non-recycled. When the wheel is turned different examples of environmental savings are highlighted. The wheel focuses
on the Cocoon and Cyclus brands – available through merchant Antalis McNaughton – and demonstrates the savings made when printing pieces of direct mail, a brochure and an annual report. Shannan Hodgson, Corporate Affairs Manager at Arjowiggins Graphic explains: “This handy tool helps our customers to quickly understand the savings that they could make by choosing to print on recycled papers. Not only that but it furthers the messaging from the ‘It feels good’ campaign, which highlights the wider positive effects on a business that printing on recycled papers can have. “A great way that businesses can increase the impact of their decision to print on recycled papers is by including and showing the environmental savings in their materials. The EBS can be tailored to individual print jobs and really showcase the commitments made by businesses that choose to print on recycled papers. For example by printing 8,226 EBS
Wheel mailers on Cocoon Offset 100% recycled paper the environmental impact was reduced by 761kg of landfill, 14,908 litres of water, 1,404 kWh of electricity, 142kg of C02 and greenhouse gases and 1.237kg of wood.” More than 8,000 wheels have been produced and they will be distributed to printers, corporations and designers. The wheels will be distributed exclusively through Antalis McNaughton. For more information, visit www.recycledpapers.co.uk

EcoPrint premier showcase for sustainable print
EcoPrint 2012 organisers, FM Brooks revealed that its world leading content proved a massive draw for the entire print supply chain with visitors including a broad cross section of printers, marketing agencies and global brands from 60 different countries. Visitors flooded in from around Europe and beyond and the list of major brands and agencies to express their interest in sustainable print included Carrefour, TBWA, Nestle, Zara, Volkswagen, IKEA, Deutsche Post, Axel Springer, Random House, DB Kommunikationstechnik GmbH, Triad Berlin and dozens more. Since announcing the event in October 2011, EcoPrint has worked hard to become the first business event, anywhere in the world to achieve ISO20121 Event Sustainability Management System, while at the same time bringing focus to the print industry’s fragmented debate around sustainable print. “The successful launch of EcoPrint, the world’s first event 100 per cent focused on sustainable print business, is a clear indication of the growing importance of sustainability for the print community,” said Frazer Chesterman, co-Director, EcoPrint. “It’s clear from the diverse range of guests that the appetite for sustainable print among some of the world’s biggest print consumers is strong and they are being proactive about how they satisfy it. As such, EcoPrint 2012 has been the industry’s best opportunity in years to make up ground lost to greenwashing and smash any misconceptions these key stakeholders may have about the sustainability of print.” “The interest in the event has come from right across Europe, and indeed the world, has been extraordinary, and confirmed to us that the decision to hold the show in Berlin was the right one. It’s the capital of Europe’s largest
and most eco-focused market and a city well known for ‘setting the agenda’ as its recent past of positive change, innovation and determination clearly demonstrates.” Senior executives from leading global brands included Coca-Cola, Toyota, DM: Markt, IKEA, Aveda, Clear Channel, JC Decaux made up a seminar roster headlined by keynote speeches from two huge names in European sustainability: Cradle To Cradle co-creator Professor Doctor Michael Braungart and founding director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber. Additions to the schedule included a demonstration from sustainable fashion brand Vapor Apparel, which details the sustainable future of the worlds’ most ubiquitous article of clothing, the “T-Shirt”, as well as, a presentation from BBDO, Germany’s largest advertising agency on sustainable media production. The exhibition floorspace featured some of sustainable print’s biggest names including: HP, Heidelberg, EFI, Mimaki, Ricoh, Roland, Epson, Mutoh, Avery Dennison, Arjo Wiggins, Deutsche Papier, Coldenhove, Dickson Coatings, Roland, Xeikon, Coldenhove, Nazdar, Jteck, Marabu, Sepiax, Neschen, Beelite, Converd, Stora Enso, Stein Beis, Caldera, K-Flow, Konica Minolta, Matrix Frame, Dufaylite, Ilford BioMedia and Zund. In a unique approach to trade shows delegates were asked to THINK, TALK and TAKE ACTION when it comes to sustainability. The Main ‘Think’ Stage featured strategic insight into the future of sustainability and the value it has for a print business. While the ‘Talk’ Forum, known as The Round, focused on specific issues surrounding sustainability with debates and discussions. And then there were ‘Take Action’ Technical Seminars where the content featured technical sessions from advisors, research organisations, experts and consultants in sustainable print production. Finally there was also the Eco-Showcase Seminars presented by exhibiting companies on their sustainable products and sustainable stories. Concludes Marcus Timson, co-Director: “Since the launch of the show, it has become clear that the issue of sustainability is fragmented across Europe and the world, and we do need a semblance of clarity, cohesion and leadership to take this important issue forward. What we hope this first exhibition will achieve is vision, direction and leadership whilst giving visitors a highly focused opportunity to source the right products, services and solutions from our 80+ exhibiting companies. “It is clear that print needs to have focused sustainable conversation with the entire supply chain. Print has the strongest sustainable stories of any media and we hope to equip the Print Industry with the facts and tools to take this story to the community of buyers and specifiers who are making important strategic media decisions.” www.mackbrooks.com
Mutoh Belgium at EcoPrint Europe 2012 Last month at EcoPrint Europe in Berlin, Mutoh Belgium demonstrated several sustainable print solutions that can help print providers become greener and at the same time explore new business opportunities in digital print. EcoPrint 2012 was the first event entirely focused to sustainability in the print industry. Before the exhibition Arthur Vanhoutte, President of Mutoh’s European Operations commented: “At Mutoh, we have, for a long time, been committed to sustainability and creating solutions that add commercial and environmental value for our customers and EcoPrint 2012 provides us with the focus and platform, in which to tell our sustainable story. We look forward to explaining the key considerations to make for greener print production. We intend to display several sustainable print solutions available from Mutoh including our printing systems for soft signage and direct to textile printing that offer considerable environmental credentials.” He continued: “We think that the print company is under pressure to
change and become sustainable but there are still plenty of products that pretend to be green when they are really not so green. We hope EcoPrint 2012 will contribute to discussion about issues affecting the effective adoption of sustainability in a print business.” “Our core philosophy related to sustainability and ecology is to manufacture and supply greener print solutions which are economically viable and which help reduce waste, energy consumption and emissions, whilst simultaneously meeting the print provider’s required performance and application needs,” Vanhoutte concluded. How Green is Green? In 2011, Mutoh released a white paper, which is available on its website, titled ‘How Green is Green?’ highlighting the complexities of implementing sustainability and explaining the perils of ‘greenwashing’. ALD Print comes out fighting with Roland Instead of battening down the hatches and weathering recent economic storms, Sheffield’s ALD Print has fought back by diversifying its print business with the recession busting VersaUV LEF-12 desktop UV-inkjet printer from Roland DG. Established as a graphic design company 22 years ago, ALD responded to the recession in the 90s by expanding into commercial print and digital sign printing, having spotted that people were making healthy returns. Further growth since then has seen ALD evolve into a comprehensive print supplier, with screen, four colour litho and digital technology all in house. Litho remains ALD Print’s core business, but as proactivity had served owner Alistair Lofthouse well in previous periods of financial pressure he recently began exploring new markets and technology and instantly recognised the potential of the VersaUV LEF-12. “Finding new markets has been essential for us because it’s a difficult time for commercial printers and with the VersaUV LEF-12 we are now personalising pens, USBs, even restaurant menus on wood and much more, for new and existing customers. Recently we printed a range of die cast model cars for a motoring heritage museum and expect this to be repeat business, while the same customer now buys printed rubbers, rulers and pencils for the gift shop from us,” said Alistair. “The machine has proved vital in responding to pressures on other parts of the business. Without the LEF-12, these markets and products would be beyond our reach and someone else would be providing this service to our clients. ” The VersaUV LEF-12 printer is designed to bring lucrative customisation and personalisation opportunities within reach of businesses of all sizes. As straightforward to use as an ordinary desktop printer, it’s an extraordinary machine that can print logos, images and text direct to a huge range of materials and objects up to 100mm deep, including wood, card, papers, films, glass, polyesters, metal, leather and plastics. The on-demand nature of inkjet printing and the non-existent set-up costs have been critical to establishing ALD in its new markets and building trust with its customers. “There are no set up costs so a sample will cost the customer nothing. We can immediately prove to customers exactly what we can do - and they always come back,” said Alistair. ALD Print’s customer base is broad, including businesses of all sizes and types requiring everything from labels to marketing collateral, and it has been able to upsell work on the VersaUV LEF-12 in many cases. But a welcome surprise for Alistair has been the amount of new customers
brought to the business by the VersaUV LEF-12, that have also become customers for his more established print services. “The local police are a good example,” says Alistair. “They heard about the new printer and wanted to see how it would handle producing durable anti-graffiti signs on PVC, which are longer lasting than the vinyl mounted on Correx they used to buy. Obviously, it performed very well and this opened the door to provide them with litho printing services.” Being heavily experienced in the art of litho and screen printing, the learning curve associated with adopting UV-inkjet did not present a problem thanks to Roland’s proprietary RIP software, VersaWorks. “We explored competitor solutions but found their software complex and cumbersome compared to VersaWorks, which is powerful yet intuitive and simple to use. We also felt that in terms of colour the solution we chose needed to be able to achieve consistency with our traditional printed product lines and the VersaUV LEF-12 stood out in this respect too. “We bought the machine through Grafityp, a Roland Authorised Dealer, and the installation was straightforward and the induction training provided was good – we were up and running in a day and a short while afterwards an engineer returned to help optimise ink usage with a software upgrade free of charge. “The machine is so versatile and we are learning new techniques all the time. I even put slate into it recently to produce a picture of a bride and groom, and wood is also particularly easy to print.” ALD Print also used the VersaUV LEF-12 to catch the eye of the judges for the BPIF Excellence Awards by printing its entry for the Innovation award onto foam board 3mm deep, resulting in a nomination for its diverse range of printed items. Alistair concludes: “We’re thrilled with the machine and customers also love it – some so much so that they’ve come in to watch it work and see how it’s done. I’ve seen lots of technological developments in my time in print but digital technology like the VersaUV LEF-12 has to be among the most exciting – it’s clean, easy to use, and efficient and adds value to whatever it prints. And it can print almost anything!” To find out more about the VersaUV LEF-12 from Roland DG visit www.rolanddg.co.uk/LEF or call 0845 230 9060 to arrange a personal demonstration at one of its regional showrooms.

Mimaki delivers new production possibilities Following extraordinary success in recent years as its UJF-3042 LED UV printer defined the small format market, Mimaki has announced the new UJF6042 flatbed which offers an A2 print bed, 150mm head height, multiple ink options and exceptionally high print quality of 1800x1800dpi. Scheduled for unveiling at Photokina in late September 2012, the new machine is capable of producing photo quality prints utilising six colour process, white and clear inks. An ideal solution for print companies seeking to deliver high quality prints onto rigid substrates, the new printer offers double the bed size of the hugely successful UJF-3042 — as well as an increase in print resolution. Also offering commercial opportunities for companies typically delivering screen print at 60x40 size, the digital advantages are obvious, with photo quality output, zero setup costs and the ability to deliver short print runs. The Mimaki UJF-6042 incorporates a ball screw type head conveyance mechanism — traditionally found only in very high end flatbed printers — which greatly enhances the accuracy of the ink drop placement onto the substrate. The combination of 1800x1800dpi and variable dot technology means the printer is engineered to deliver highly accurate prints and the A2 bed size allows two facing pages of an A3 photo book to be printed simultaneously. For smaller items, an efficient layout can be created with the use of jigs, ensuring accurate print placement and ease of workflow. When printing to rigid substrates, Mimaki’s proven LH-100 ink incorporates CMYK + white and features vibrant colour and excellent adhesion properties. Additionally, the UJF-6042 can be commissioned with Mimaki’s LF-100 flexible ink, available in six colours and white, or the highly stretchy LF-200 ink which enables expansion of up to 200% where applications require this level of flexibility. The UJF-6042 sports a number of Mimaki’s production print features, including the ability to use automatic primer, the powerful Nozzle Recovery Function and Mimaki Circulation Technology — both designed to ensure a consistently high print quality, and comes supplied with Mimaki’s RasterLink 6 RIP software; a fully featured package with intuitive layout functions, powerful spot colour replacement capabilities and the capability to print three layers (colour, white and colour) simultaneously onto transparent substrates. With commercial availability early next year, the Mimaki UJF-6042 will be available through Hybrid’s specialist reseller network — with further details available at www.hybridservices.co.uk or by calling 01270 501900.

Never trust a ‘Dabbler’! Talk to an expert.
SME Advisor can help you and your business!
A
s an employer if you haven’t got enough on your plate I thought I’d share with you a couple of stories from our experiences in digging employers out of some pretty big holes over the years. These instances have occurred through an employer (or someone they have taken advice from) being a Dabbler!
Definition – dab·ble
verb 1. to play and splash in or as if in water, especially with the hands. 2. to work at anything in an irregular or superficial manner
The under-performing worker This employee had quite simply “gone off the boil” and the once productive worker was now proving to be a problem. Their productivity was down, they’d become careless about their work and their colleagues were to say the least “a bit Pi**ed-Off” as they were constantly covering for them. The Dabbler advised…. “Make them redundant and then replace them.” We say……No! Always address the problem with the correct solution. If an employee is unproductive then look for the reason why. Do they need training? Are there other issues that may be affecting their performance? The chances are that you’ve already invested a lot of time and therefore money in this person so it’s worth trying to turn things around. Your business should have a Capability Procedure within your Employee Handbook, follow this and once exhausted it may see them returning to their better ways or it might result in them being dismissed. Incidentally, had the employer taken the Dabbler’s advice then they could have faced some tough questions at an Employment Tribunal, after all it is a job that becomes redundant and that wasn’t the case here.
To suspend or not to suspend, that is the question… The employer wasn’t a Mr William Shakespeare before you ask, but instead was a business where an employee had, in the opinion of the manager (the Dabbler), committed an act of gross misconduct.
We’ve not time to go into all the details of the misconduct but must, we feel, emphasise that for an employee to have committed an act of gross misconduct that it must have been of sufficient magnitude to be an intolerable act. In this instance the employer had allowed the employee to continue working for several days before deciding to discipline them for the gross misconduct. By allowing the employee to continue working the employer has effectively “tolerated the intolerable” which seriously limits their ability to discipline for gross misconduct. Employers should be aware that to suspend an employee does not imply guilt but is a legitimate means allowing them to investigate a matter without the employee present. Needless to say, had the employer progressed with a dismissal on the grounds of gross misconduct that they may have faced serious criticism at Employment Tribunal for their actions that could have resulted in financial awards to the aggrieved employee.
Employers: THREE important questions to ask yourself 1. When did you last have your Employee Handbook reviewed? 2. Do you have an expert to consult on any employment matter? 3. Can I afford to make a mistake?

Mutton Geoff While getting a check up, a man tells his doctor that he thinks his wife is losing her hearing. The doctor says, “You should do a simple test. Stand about 15 feet behind your wife and say ‘honey?’ Move 3 feet closer and do it again. Keep moving three feet closer until she finally responds.” Remember how close you were when she gives you an answer. That will help me know how bad her hearing loss is. About a month later the same guy is at the doctor again and the doctor asks, “Well, did you do that experiment with your wife’s hearing?” The man says “yes”. “How close did you get before she answered?” “Well, by the time I got about three feet away she just turned around and said “For the FIFTH TIME... WHAT???”
Genuine Excerpts from Letters Sent to Landlords... The toilet is blocked and we cannot bathe the children until it is cleared. I want some repairs done to my stove as it has backfired and burnt my knob off. This is to let you know that there is a smell coming from the man next door. The toilet seat is cracked: where do I stand? I am writing on behalf of my sink, which is running away from the wall. I request your permission to remove my drawers in the kitchen. Our lavatory seat is broken in half and is now in three pieces. The person next door has a large erection in his back garden, which is unsightly and dangerous. Will you please send someone to mend our cracked path. Yesterday my wife tripped on it and is now pregnant. Our kitchen floor is very damp, we have two children and would like a third, so will you please send someone to do something about it. Will you please send a man to look at my water, it is a funny colour and not fit to drink. Would you please send a man to repair my down spout. I am an old age pensioner and need it straight away. Could you please send someone to fix our bath tap. My wife got her toe stuck in it and it is very uncomfortable for us. When the workmen were here they put their tools in my wife’s new drawers and made a mess. Please send men with clean tools to finish the job and keep my wife happy.
Beer Labels Due to increasing products liability, beer manufacturers have accepted the Medical Association’s suggestion that the following warning labels be placed immediately on all beer containers: Warning: Consumption of alcohol may make you think you are whispering when you are not. Warning: Consumption of alcohol is a major factor in dancing like an idiot. Warning: Consumption of alcohol may cause you to tell the same boring story over and over again until your friends want to go home. Warning: Consumption of alcohol may cause you to tell the same boring story over and over again until your friends want to go home. Warning: Consumption of alcohol may lead you to believe that ex-lovers are really dying for you to telephone them at 4 in the morning. Warning: Consumption of alcohol may leave you wondering what the hell happened to your trousers. Warning: Consumption of alcohol may make you think you can logically converse with other members of the opposite sex without spitting. Warning: Consumption of alcohol may make you think you possess mystical Kung-Fu powers. Warning: Consumption of alcohol may cause you to roll over in the morning and see something really scary (whose species, and/or name you can’t remember). Warning: Consumption of alcohol is the leading cause of inexplicable rug burns on the forehead. Warning: Consumption of alcohol may lead to traffic signs and cones appearing in your home. Warning: Consumption of alcohol may lead you to believe you are invisible. Warning: Consumption of alcohol may lead you to believe that people are laughing with you. Warning: Consumption of alcohol may cause an influx in the time-space continuum, whereby small (and sometimes large) gaps of time may seem to literally disappear.
Wisdom I am passing this on to you because it definitely worked for me. By following the simple advice I read in an article, I have finally found inner peace... It said: ‘The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started’. So, today I have finished one bottle of vodka, a bottle of red wine, a bottle of Jack Daniel’s, my Prozac and a small box of chocolates. I feel better already!
Cardiologist and Motor Mechanic A motorcar mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a BMW M3 when he spotted a wellknown cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his car when the mechanic shouted across the garage, “Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?” The cardiologist, a bit surprised walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcar. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, “So Doc, look at this engine. I opened its heart, took the valves out, repaired or replaced anything damaged, and then put everything back in, and when I finished, it worked just like new. So how is that I make £24,000 a year and you make £1.7M when you and I are doing basically the same work?” The cardiologist paused, leaned over, and then whispered to the mechanic... “Try doing it with the engine running”
Check your IQ 1. A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven’t eaten in three years Which room is safest for him? 2. A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for over 10 minutes. Finally, she hangs him. But five minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together - How can this be? 3. There are two plastic jugs filled with water. How could you put all of this water into a barrel, without using the jugs or any dividers, and still tell which water came from which jug? 4. What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and grey when you throw it away? 5. Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday? 6. This is an unusual paragraph. I’m curious how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it? It looks so plain you would think nothing was wrong with it! In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is unusual though. Study it, and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out! Try to do so without any coaching!
aNSWERS 1. The third. Lions that haven’t eaten in three years are dead. 2. The woman was a photographer. She shot a picture of her husband, developed it, and hung it up to dry. 3. Freeze them first. Take them out of the jugs and put the ice in the barrel. You will be able to tell which water came from which jug. 4. The answer is Charcoal. In Homer Simpson’s words: hmmmm... Barbecue. 5. Sure you can: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow! 6. The letter ‘e’, which is the most common letter in the English language, does not appear once in the long paragraph.
Definition of Barbecuing It’s the only type of cooking a ‘real’ man will do. When a man volunteers to do the ‘BBQ’ the following chain of events are put into motion: 1. The woman goes to the store. 2. The woman fixes the salad, vegetables, and dessert. 3. The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils, and takes it to the man, who is lounging beside the grill, beer in hand. 4. The man places the meat on the grill. 5. The woman goes inside to set the table and check the vegetables. 6. The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. 7. The man takes the meat off the grill and hands it to the woman. 8. The woman prepares the plates and brings them to the table. 9. After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes. 10. Everyone praises man and thanks him for his cooking efforts. 11. The man asks the woman how she enjoyed ‘her night off.’ And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there’s just no pleasing some women.
Like father, like… Romeo Beckham got his first chance to play for Man U at Old Trafford, so he asked his dad what number he should wear and his dad thought for a minute and said…’wear 4 out there Romeo’.

Fore Play An elderly couple were in bed one night and the woman woke up from a bad dream. She was scared and panicking. Her husband awoke and turned the light on to calm her. He asked what was wrong. She said “I had a dream that I died and you got remarried.” she asked him “if I died tomorrow would you get remarried?” he said “sure, I don’t want to spend the rest of my life lonely.” then she asked “well would you two live in this house?” he replied “sure, we just got finished paying off our mortgage.” she asked again, angry now “well would she sleep in this bed?” he snickered and said “yes, of course, this bed is brand new and expensive, there’s no reason to rid of it.” she asked irately, “well would she use my golf clubs?” he replied with a straight, serious face “no. She’s left handed.”
Frustrating copy job A new monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to help the other monks in copying the old texts by hand. He notices however, that they are copying copies, not the original books. So, the new monk goes to the head monk to ask him about this. He points out that if there were an error in the first copy, that error would be continued in all of the other copies. The head monk says, ‘We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son.’ So the head monk goes down into the cellar with one of the copies to check it against the original. Hours later, nobody has seen him. So, one of the monks goes downstairs to look for him. He hears sobbing coming from the back of the cellar, and finds the old monk leaning over one of the original books crying. He asks, ‘What’s wrong?’ ‘The word is CELEBRATE,’ says the old monk.
Age old question finally satisfied; A chicken and an egg are lying in bed.
Spanish Computer Speak A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. ‘House’ for instance, is feminine: ‘la casa.’ ‘Pencil,’ however, is masculine: ‘el lapiz.’ A student asked, ‘What gender is ‘computer’?’ Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether computer’ should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men’s group decided that ‘computer’ should definitely be of the feminine gender (‘la computadora’), because: 1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic; 2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else; 3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and 4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your salary on accessories for it. (THIS GETS BETTER!) The women’s group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine (‘el computador’), because: 1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on; 2. They have a lot of data but still can’t think for themselves; 3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and 4. As soon as you commit to one, you realise that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model. The women won.
The chicken is leaning against the headboard smoking a cigarette, with a satisfied smile on its face.
More Hot Air A man in a hot air balloon realised he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted,” Excuse me, can you help? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.” The woman below replied, “You are in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You are between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude.” “You must be an engineer,” said the balloonist. “I am,” replied the woman. “How did you know?” “Well,” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of you, and the fact is I am still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help so far.” The woman below responded, “You must be in sales management.” “I am,” replied the balloonist, “but how did you know?” “Well,” said the woman, “you don’t know where you are or where you are going. You have risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it’s my fault!”
Rock ‘n’ Roll
the kids are doing it.’ Naturally, this comes as a quite a surprise to Bobby - so he asks Carrie’s Dad to repeat it. ‘Yeah,’ says Carrie’s father, ‘Carrie really likes to screw; she’ll screw all night if we let her!’ Well, this just made Bobby’s eyes light up, and his plan for the evening was beginning to look pretty good. A few minutes later, Carrie comes downstairs in her little poodle skirt and announces that she’s ready to go. Almost breathless with anticipation, Bobby escorts his date out the front door. About 20 minutes later, Carrie rushes back into the house, slams the door behind her, and screams at her father: ‘DAMMIT DADDY! ...IT’S CALLED THE TWIST!!!’

Mutton Geoff
It’s the Spring of 1957 and Bobby goes to pick up his date. He’s a pretty hip guy with his own car. When he goes to the front door, the girl’s father answers and invites him in. ‘Carrie’s not ready yet, so why don’t you have a seat?,’ he says. ‘That’s cool’ says Bobby. Carrie’s father asks Bobby what they’re planning to do. Bobby replies politely that they will probably just go to the soda shop or a movie. Carrie’s father responds ‘why don’t you two go out and screw? I hear all
Geoff, an 82 year-old man went to the Doctor to get a physical. A few days later the doctor saw Geoff walking down the street with a gorgeous young lady on his arm. A couple of days later the doctor spoke to the man and said, ‘You’re really doing great, aren’t you?’ Geoff replied, ‘Just doing what you said, Doctor: ‘Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.’ ‘ The Doctor said, ‘I didn’t say that. I said you got a heart murmur. Be careful.’
The egg, looking a bit pissed off, grabs the sheet, rolls over, and says…
‘Well, I guess we finally answered THAT question!’
