Route1Print launch free eBook to help growth
Route1Print has created a free eBook to help Print Resellers discover new ways to grow their business. The eBook, named The Print Shop Revolution, provides actionable tips to help print and copy shops diversify their offering and expand their current services. Brand Manager Jack Wilmot said the eBook demonstrates Route1Print’s philosophy to support print resellers in all areas of their business. “Most trade printers only focus on price, which although important, only encourages the market to engage in a race to the bottom. We wanted to provide a genuinely useful resource for our clients that proposes innovative ways to expand their services and compete in the print market.” The eBook focusses on diversification, relationship building and in-store experience as methods for print and copy shops to grow without competing on price alone. Mr Willmott adds that “the book isn’t meant to be a ‘how-to’ manual, but rather a source of ideas to explore. We like to support our clients as if they were a franchise, without tying them to us with a contract or mandating how they run their business.” The South Yorkshire based trade printer drew upon their extensive knowledge of the print industry, combined with in-house marketing experts to create the comprehensive guide that approaches business growth from alternative perspectives. “Having grown our business to a place in The Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100, we felt that we were able to speak with authority,” Mr Wilmott continues; “we know
our clients know print, so we wanted to offer a fresh approach to support our reseller network whilst ultimately strengthening the print industry as a whole.” To form the content, Route1Print researched the problems that print shops face at length, and
tackled those issues one by one over the three chapters. It addresses methods to cultivate local relationships, nurture customer loyalty and personalise services to institutionalise print shops in their communities. The Print Shop Revolution is another addition to the array of reseller tools available on the Route1Print site, as a series of resources built to achieve their goal as print partners with clients. Mr Wilmott adds, “Guides and content like this are the next step in expanding our services for our clients. To practice what we preach, adding value and offering that extra level of support is central to our philosophy and what we are trying to achieve here.” The eBook is available to download on the website, and hard copies will also be available at The 2016 Print Show at Route1Print’s stand. OKI race car under wraps in creative competition Global printer manufacturer OKI is giving budding artists and experienced creatives alike the opportunity to design a car wrap fit for the racetrack through its Print My Ride competition. Entrants will be able to upload their artwork to the Print My Ride website, www.okiprintmyride. com and apply it to a virtual car — rotating a 3D view to experience it from all angles before submitting online showroom photos to be judged by an expert panel. Lucky winners from three categories — ‘Most creative’, ‘Design that best utilises the OKI printer’s capabilities’, ‘Judge’s favourite’ and a ‘Wild Card’ entry will receive prizes for their contributions, ranging from a model car wrapped in their design to an all-expenses-paid trip to a 2017 Formula One Grand Prix event. Jason Price, Creative Designer for vehicle-graphics specialist Jellyfish Design, says: “I think this will certainly go down really well, I’m
very impressed with the work so far and can’t wait to get started”. Alongside the competition, OKI will be supplying a brand new livery for Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship driver Mat Jackson’s car, printed on the new OKI Colour Painter wideformat printer. The company is also sponsoring Motorbase Performance, forming a pertinent partnership considering the vital role wide-format printing plays in car wrapping.
Motorbase Performance Team Principal David Bartrum says: “It’s fantastic to have OKI come on board with the team at this point in our campaign. To have that kind of radical change to Mat’s Ford Focus with such a vibrant and unique design for the last two crucial rounds of the season at Silverstone and Brands Hatch tops things off nicely. “We’re very proud to be the first team on the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship
grid to carry the OKI brand and to demonstrate the new wideformat print wrap in action for the season’s climax and we look forward to a successful partnership off and on track.” With its extensive range of wide-format printers, OKI currently serves many automotive organisations, delivering the speed and performance the industry demands — all while retaining a hyper-fast, high-resolution finish. Mat Jackson’s car was sporting the custom-made wrap at the Silverstone race weekend taking place from 17th to 18th September, and at the Brands Hatch GP from 1st to 2nd October. OKI Europe Ltd is a division of OKI Data Corporation, a global business-to-business brand dedicated to creating cost effective, professional in-house printers, applications and services which are designed to increase the efficiency of today’s and tomorrow’s businesses. www.oki.co.uk
Healeys Creates New Production Landscape
Increased demand for landscape A4 property brochures prompted Healeys Printers to invest in a Horizon SPF-FC/200L landscape feed bookletmaker, supplied by IFS. The Ipswich B2 litho and digital printer that works with creative agencies, property and fine art markets also added a Foliant Taurus to meet a growing need for same day lamination. The latest investment has been made on the back of positive growth says Healeys Managing Director, Philip Dodd: “We have seen business grow 10% year on year. It has been incredible. We have just had the best month for digital with it accounting for 35% of sales. It is usually around 27%.
This follows enhancements to its digital printing: “We have just added the longsheet feeder on the Kodak NexPress, which a great way of handling the A4 landscape work, and needed something to finish it. We started looking at bookletmakers last autumn and chose the Horizon because it is cost effective, efficient and delivers a high quality A4 landscape result. We already have a Horizon StitchLiner 5500 but the new addition allows us to be more creative with the mix of work we are running. “For example if we need to quickly complete a 12-page A4 250–300 run we can do it faster and make money on it.” Capable of 4,500bph, the Horizon SPF/
FC-200L combines all the highly automated features of the successful SPF/FC200A bookletmaker with the ability to feed A4 landscape sheets up to 640mm in length. JDF-ready, the system offers instant set-ups via a large icon-based colour touchscreen for userfriendly operation. The screen can be used for on-the-run fine tune adjustments as well as the store and recall of up to 200 jobs. As for the Foliant Taurus 530SF Philip says: “We invested in a hand fed laminator five months ago. Since then the next day lamination demand has had a massive response. We expect that side of business to grow even more in September to at least 50 individual orders. For that we needed a highly automated solution.” The small footprint 30m/min B2+ Foliant Taurus 530SF features a rising pile back separation stream feeder and a suction paper feed head. The compact design incorporates feeder, laminator, and a sheet separator in a single construction. He adds: “We liked the Foliant for a number of reasons. Ease of set up was essential and it is very flexible. It is also a highly effective process and very quick.” www.ifsl.uk.com

Stanford Marsh lead with HP PageWide XL International Copy Shop
Stanford Marsh, a leading independent solutions provider for the wide-format and 3D print sectors — and one of only three UK vendors permitted to supply and service HP’s new PageWide XL Series of products — has announced two new customers for HP’s PageWide XL printing technology. Both companies are independent printers and have been able to quickly invest in — and take advantage of — the PageWide XL technology thanks to their forward-thinking outlook and autonomy in making decisions.
International Copy Shop (ICS), located at NEC Birmingham, invested in a new HP PageWide XL 5000 multifunctional printer in a deal signed at Sign & Digital UK 2016. The printer was installed in May 2016 and has been a great success.
Quickprint Exeter
Already utilising an eco-solvent wide format printer and an HP Z6800 printer for outdoor, signage and photo work, Quickprint Exeter was looking to replace its Xerox monochrome LED plan printer with a solution t at could deliver cost effective and high quality colour and black and white printing output from a single device. Stanford Marsh arranged a demonstration to show Quickprint Exeter the capabilities of the HP PageWide product range and the company subsequently became one of the first printers in the UK to implement the HP PageWide XL5000 MFP Copy, Print and Scan solution. Quickprint Exeter’s managing director Danny Frayne explains: “Printing is a very competitive industry. Our business is constantly evolving to keep up with the latest trends, so adopting new technologies that can add or enhance the services
we provide is important to our ongoing success.” On opting for PageWide technology, he adds: “The speed and quality required for the quick turnaround of CAD line drawings for the construction industry, rendered images, GIS maps and high-resolution scanning and copying for our customers was a key factor when selecting our upgrade, as these are often time-critical. However, the HP PageWide XL printer — which runs at five times lower energy consumption than LED models — has the added advantage of being able to provide the fast production of posters on a range of media from the same machine. This has opened other markets to us — in fact, one of the first jobs completed on the PageWide was for a large number of A1 colour posters.”
SMARTSTREAM WORKFLOW SOFTWARE: Both Quickprint Exeter and International Copy Shop have opted for the SmartStream workflow software which enables quick and easy submission of multiple print files. An image of each file can be viewed prior to printing which highlights any errors within the file for correction. By eliminating errors within files, print jobs are produced perfectly, and waste or misprints are eliminated. INCLUSIVE SERVICE CONTRACT FROM STANFORD MARSH: Both companies have opted for an inclusive service contract from Stanford Marsh. For ICS and Quickprint Exeter, these contracts — which can be tailored to meet any individual customer’s needs — cover all service click throughput charges for inclusive part replacement and labour, inks, heads and associated consumables, meaning that customers’ funds do not need to be tied into stock as billing is paid quarterly in arrears. www.quickprint.co.uk www.icscopyshop.co.uk www.stanfordmarsh.co.uk
Mimaki TS300P dye sub printer two-year warranty After many successful installs since its debut at FESPA 2015, the Mimaki TS300P-1800 1.8m production dye sublimation printer now includes a two year warranty, demonstrating its proven reliability in the field. The Mimaki TS300P sports superfast print speeds thanks to latest generation industrial printheads and is capable of print speeds of up to 115m²/h making it ideal as both a standalone dye sublimation unit or in a bank of machines for cost-effective high production, as national sales manager for Textile & Apparel at Mimaki’s UK and Ireland distributor, Hybrid Services; Stephen Woodall explains, “The TS300P has everything you’d expect from Mimaki’s long heritage in textile printing. At a keen price point of £23,995, and now with a two year Gold Warranty as standard, it’s ideal for sportswear, exhibition graphics and fast fashion and as a production machine it meets the requirements of customers for shorter runs, lower inventories and faster lead times. TS300Ps purchased from September 2016 will come with a two year warranty, which gives peace of mind.” A key element of the TS300P’s success out in the field has been its compatibility with the economical yet vibrant Sb410 dye sublimation inks. “Mimaki’s Sb410 sublimation transfer inks significantly improve
profitability through their low cost and the availability of the ink in two litre sacks for the MBIS3 (Mimaki Bulk Ink System 3) for long, unattended runs,” Stephen continues. “It’s not only the cost that’s appealing though, as the Sb410 inks are very stable, ensuring better ink jetting and reduced nozzle cleaning. Plus, the fluorescent additions to the Sb410 inks have proven popular with the growth of ‘on trend’ neon sportswear. ” The two year Gold Warranty is available now on TS300P-1800 purchases through Hybrid’s specialist textile reseller network. www.hybridservices.co.uk

Larkbeare installs MBO combination folder In a move aimed at increasing flexibility and capacity in its Wiro-O binding and PUR binding operations Larkbeare Services has installed a MBO K760/4 S-KTL Efficiency Combi folding machine + FA46 ME stacker delivery system, both supplied by UK & Ireland agent, Friedheim International. Says managing director Neil Oakley: “We needed to replace an ageing Stahl folder, and decided that a combination folder was what we required to provide us with greater flexibility in our folding department. We have for some years now relied on buckle folders, but the MBO K760/4 S-KTL Efficiency Combi folder appeared the perfect solution, and as I like MBOs anyway, the final decision was an easy one!” Larkbeare Services is one of the largest, fully independent trade finishing companies in Europe, and is a specialist in Wire-O, spiral and PUR binding. With a staff of 30, and working from a 30,000 sq ft factory near Exeter in Devon, the company utilises the latest state-ofthe-art equipment and production techniques to produce the highest quality work for an ever-growing local, national and international client list. In addition to Wire-O, spiral and PUR binding, other finishing services offered include
folding, laminating, cutting, collating, perfect binding, stitching and trimming. Jobs undertaken by Larkbeare Services can vary from the hundreds to the many millions, and the new MBO K760/4 S-KTL Efficiency Combi folder is already seen to be proving its worth by increasing throughput speeds, as Neil Oakley explains: “Being a new machine it is

Xerox Direct to Object Inkjet Printer Xerox Nozzles — Half width of a human hair — print photos, images and text directly onto 3D bbjects in minutes. The innovative architecture of tiny, stainless steel nozzles inside the new Xerox Direct to Object Inkjet Printer has created a new, label-less, ondemand method of personalising three-dimensional objects. The nozzles are contained in print heads — about the size of a deck of cards — that accurately spray ink on objects as small as bottle caps and as large as football helmets. The printer can print on plastic, metals, ceramics and glass, eliminating the need for costly labels. “This innovation opens up a path for creating customised products instantly at a time when the consumer’s appetite is all about personalisation,” said Brendan Casey, vice president of Xerox Engineering Services. “Imagine a sports fan coming home from a game with a helmet or ball that was personalised right at the stadium, or a retailer offering on-demand personalisation on hundreds of different store items.” Xerox uses enhanced imagequality algorithms to direct the microscopic nozzles half the
width
of a human hair. By accurately spraying ink at distances of one-quarter inch, the printer is able to print on smooth, rough, slightly curved or stepped surfaces at print resolutions ranging from 300 to 1200 dpi. The printer can handle up to 30 objects per hour, with the ability to scale for production. “The real innovation here is that we can now print on items, such as steel water bottles with multiple
curves, without the setup time and costs that analogue printing such as flexography or screen printing require,” said Wayne Buchar, chief engineer, Xerox Engineering Services. Other innovative features include: • The ink jets are compatible with virtually any type of ink chemistry including solvent, aqueous and UV inks and can be operated at temperatures as high as 140°C, enabling jetting of specialised inks that meet demanding requirements. • The innovative architecture features a flexible design for holders so that objects can be changed out easily. • Xerox software ensures precise head-to-head registration and best in class colour calibration. The printer promises to create new
revenue opportunities for a number of industries: • Retail: In competitive retail space where brick and mortar stores are in a fierce battle with online retailers, the printer is easy-to-use, fun-to-watch and offers highly customisable output allowing stores to offer walk-up low cost print runs as low as one on a variety of objects. • Printing: For those serving a variety of markets, centralised print providers or distributors (online or brick and mortar) can offer small runs for personalising and customising products. • Packaging and manufacturing: It is a packager’s dream to eliminate the cost and headache of labels and be able to customise packaging. It also offers a flexible architecture that can support conveyors if necessary. Availability: The Xerox Direct to Object Printer is a customised solution built to order. Xerox will work directly with customers to optimise a custom configuration specifically suited for their application. Pricing starts at $145,000 (U.S.) and varies according to configuration and options. www.xerox.com
Creative self-adhesive label converting Xeikon has made self-adhesive label conversion affordable with the Xeikon Laser Die-cut Unit (LDU). Laser diecutting has been in the industry for some time but the process is increasing in popularity as it can help meet the demand for shorter runs, faster turnaround times and greater variations. This demand has driven the development of more flexible and affordable solutions such as the Xeikon LDU. It is designed to match the 31.5 ft/min speed of the Xeikon 3030 and has the flexibility to be upgraded onsite to a higher power laser. Its inline configuration with the Xeikon 3030 enables tool and hassle free white sheet production. It also is a one-man operation increasing productivity while decreasing human touchpoints. Operations that have no production investment in this area can easily add the capabilities and offer these business winning services.
At Labelexpo the Xeikon LDU will show how it excels in productivity and minimises the cost of converting. Developed to work with Xeikon’s press portfolio, it has a web width of up to 330mm and can handle materials from conventional or other digital presses including PP, Silver PP and PET. The Xeikon LDU applies varnish, laser diecuts, slits and rewinds labels, enabling job changeovers with limited or no setup time. The laser station can kiss cut and perforate. Integration with the Xeikon Front-End via the Vectorizor module ensures smooth and automated label production. The system covers most of the converting needs for the short-run self-adhesive label market and can run off-line or in-line with the Xeikon 3000 Series. Its ability to handle a broad range of substrates opens up a world of production possibilities while peace of mind is assured with
servicing by dedicated Xeikon engineers. Jeroen van Bauwel, Xeikon’s Director Product Management, says: “This unit, in combination with the Xeikon 3030 and Xeikon vectorisor, is the most perfect and flexible all-in-one solution for digital label printing and finishing. Its many uses range from supporting new clients establishing their services to web2print stores.” www.xeikon.com

Mimaki JFX200-2531 larger printing area
Mimaki has announced a forthcoming addition to its popular and much-lauded JFX200 product family. The JFX200-2531 LED UV flatbed printer builds on the success of the JFX200-2513 model with a significantly increased printing area and greatly enhanced productivity. The current JFX200-2513 has been enthusiastically embraced by the market since its launch just over two years ago, with Mimaki stating that it is now responding to feedback from customers seeking the same marketleading performance, but with a larger print table. The new JFX200-2531 meets that requirement with a print area twice the size of its predecessor and a unique “toggle print” function that increases productivity and improves continuous running capability by allowing operators to load one board while another is printing. The new, large flatbed UV-curable inkjet printer is compatible with media up to 2.5 x 3.1 metres, increasing the application range to accommodate large signs, wall decorations, doors and other large items.
It can also accommodate two signage boards of the popular 1,220mm × 2,440mm (4ft × 8ft) size, allowing print companies to benefit from the added productivity enabled by the toggle print function, making the JFX200-2531 the ideal flatbed printer for growing sign and display companies. Commenting on this latest development, Stuart Cole; National Sales Manager — Industrial Products for Hybrid Services Ltd; Mimaki’s exclusive distributor in the UK and Ireland, says, “This is a really positive development of the JFX range and yet again demonstrates Mimaki’s commitment to listening to its customers and delivering products that meet their ever-changing needs. I’m certain that this new model will have huge appeal to signmakers whose businesses are expanding, diversifying and are now looking for greater output capability.” With availability anticipated in early 2017, the new JFX200-2531 will be offered through Hybrid’s network of specialist industrial products resellers. Additional features of the new JFX200-2531 include improved media handling and an ioniser that eliminates electrostatic discharge which can affect image quality. Anti-banding functions and variable dot printing also contribute to the creation of smooth, exceptionally high-quality images. Finally, a vacuum pedal is now included as standard for hands-free operation of the media vacuum function. A wide range of inksets are also available to accommodate the broadest range of applications, including LH-100 scratch resistant ink, LUS-120 and LUS-150 inks suitable for printing on soft materials, LUS-200 ink which is ideal for outdoor applications with its superior resistance to sun, rain and other adverse weather conditions and LUS-350 ink; a unique, stretchable ink suitable for a wide range of thermoforming applications, with the ability to stretch up to 350% without cracking. www.hybridservices.co.uk

Mimaki launches new Tx500P-3200DS di-sub
Mimaki has announced the launch of the Tx500P-3200DS 3.2 metre direct sublimation printer, the latest in a number of innovative product launches the company has undertaken in the last few weeks. With its built in, in-line heat fixation unit, the new printer significantly reduces production time through its simultaneous performance of two operations; printing and colour fixation, reducing two steps to one. With a print speed capability of up to 130m² per hour, the Tx500P-3200DS is ideal for production of samples as well as large batch production with short delivery times. Mimaki cites the growing demand for soft signage, with its economic and environmental benefits, as a key driver behind the development of the new model. Aware that the textile industry is moving ever-larger volumes from analogue to digital printing in order to meet market demand for the growing number of small lot orders and shortened cycle times, the new Tx500P-3200DS was specifically designed to meet these requirements in both segments, as well as increased demand for digitally printed textiles in home décor, including extra-wide fabrics for draperies, linens and upholstery. The improved productivity benefits of the new printer will also make it ideal for meeting the growing demand created by custom The Tx500P-3200DS is uniquely suited to a wide array of textile printing, including soft signage, customised apparel, and fabrics for
home décor and furnishings. Print speeds of up to 130m²/hour in four colour print mode and up to 105m²/ hour in six colour mode, headline the machines capabilities, yet it also delivers unmatched print quality with print resolution up to 720 x 1080 dpi using 12 print heads in a staggered three line array. The in-line heat fixation unit, capable of generating temperatures of up to 200°C, ensures the machine is able to perform its full ‘single-step’ print and fixation process even at the highest operational speeds. Consistency and stability of print quality are achieved by a pulling roller that maintains appropriate pressure during printing onto rolled textiles with widths up to 3.2 meters and up to 130kg in weight. Reliable, uninterrupted print operation is ensured by the machine’s ability to automatically detect and clean clogged print nozzles and substitute good nozzles for printing during this process, allowing continuity of operation and reducing waste created by defective nozzles. As with all Mimaki printers, this new printer features precise placement of well-shaped ink droplets onto the fabric for the best possible quality. This is accomplished by automatically taking into account the specific gravity and viscosity of each ink, precisely placing droplets as small as six picolitres for beautiful, high resolution printing results. Exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services Ltd, the company’s National Sales Manager - Textile & Apparel,
Stephen Woodall comments; “There is a great deal about the Tx500P-3200DS that textile print suppliers should be enthusiastic about. The new machine’s ability to deliver print and heat fixation in
a single operation is a genuinely unique feature which is certain to have a major impact on productivity and profitability for users. Time is a critical factor for many producers in this ever-changing sector, with increasingly challenging schedules and demands to meet. Direct sublimation transfer printing requires the fixing of printed inks through heating, and this machines ability to deliver this at the same time as printing removes a step in the traditional process, speeding up the operation, saving valuable time and enabling both shortrun bespoke commissions and large scale production runs to be achieved with equal efficiency.” The first machines are expected to be shipped in January 2017. www.hybridservices.co.uk

THE PRINT SHOW • NEC, BIRMINGHAM, 11-13 OCTOBER
SEE YOU IN BRUM FOR THE PRINT SHOW Come and see how the UK Print industry’s only dedicated exhibition can help your business reach new heights. Now in its second year this exhibition is designed to give all UK printers the essential tools they need to remain profitable and grow their business.
[T]
his is the final countdown to plan your show visit to key names like Xerox, Konica Minolta, Duplo, RISO, Presstek, OKI, EFI, and Epson. Together with more than 100 other exhibitors these companies will be displaying a fantastic range of the latest equipment, print media, software, and consumables.
LIVE AND LET PRINT From a celebration of the UK print industry’s historic technological legacy in Traditional Print Master classes, to an exploration of the most profitable areas of diversification for our industry at The Printers’ Bazaar, The Print Show has designed a range of special hands on educational content. The Software and Business Seminar Theatres will also provide visitors with high-quality business intelligence and free training.
THE PRINTERS’ BAZAAR The Printers’ Bazaar was inspired by the street markets of Asia, where you can pick up anything from car parts to exotic spices. Being able to see a wide variety of the latest niche print technology in action, while being surrounded by a myriad of real-world product examples, will hopefully inspire printers and give them tangible solutions to grow their revenue and perhaps start a new chapter in their business. What is vital to understand is that long-term success for many printers hinges upon the continued expansion of their product portfolio so they can continue to say ‘yes’ to their
customers, no matter the request. This is the trend that has driven the creation of the Printers’ Bazaar, a space where the industry can browse and shop for new ‘businesses in a box’ that will ensure their continued competitiveness.
TRADITIONAL PRINT MASTERCLASSES The rich industrial heritage of the United Kingdom is celebrated around the world, a shining example of a cultural dedication to hard work, innovation, and pioneering spirit. And a core part of this legacy is its printing industry, which remains the fifth largest in the entire world. Indeed, the amazing names of institutions such as The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers give you a clue as to how important print was at its pinnacle, a driving force in politics, the arts, and even the balance of governmental power. Over a period of more than four hundred years, the technology and skills that have

underpinned the UK print industry have gone through a fantastically rich process of evolution and change. Hand cranked presses gave way to rolling presses, the first offset litho machines, letterpress, linotype machines, electrically driven litho, computer-to-plate, and of course the digital toner and inkjet revolution. What is amazing is that in 2016 there are still a significant number of jobbing printers and specialised finishers that use historic technology for their everyday print production. It is this unbroken chain of technical excellence and skills being handed down from one generation of professional printers to the next that The Print Show has set out to celebrate with the Traditional Print Master classes.
visitors through a range of its special areas, but one of the jewels in its crown is the Software Training Theatre that covers Adobe, Corel, and Quark platforms. The theatre will be providing in-depth training to visitors, as well as providing one-on-one consultancy free of charge in between sessions. Corel will focus on areas such as how to get the very best out of its Corel Draw Graphics Suite. Quark will provide a comprehensive overview of its latest releases and how its new features can help you to automate production and improve efficiency. Adobe specialists meanwhile will look at mastering the tips and tricks of software such as Photoshop and InDesign.

THE PRINTER’S ARMS One of the key highlights of The Print Show is that it has its very own pub. The Printer’s Arms, a place to take a load off, have some good food, sink a pint or two, and network with industry colleagues or customers new and old. The Printer’s Arms was founded to support one of the most important activities at any trade show, networking. The saying ‘people buy from people’ is very true, and being able to sit down one-to-one in a relaxed and warm atmosphere without having to leave the exhibition hall is a fantastic asset to have.

end web-to-print solution. Visitors will be able to see in action how the latest web-to-print technologies are enabling the industry to jump on the hottest trends in personalisation. Guests at the show will be able to create their very own personalised well-known brand of chocolate on stand (C10), utilising the three companies’ combined technologies The theme of the show will be automation, so to demonstrate how the three companies work together to reduce the manual workflow stages in the printing process — and save businesses valuable time — they’ll be capturing bespoke variable data via Infigo Software’s intuitive Catfish platform. They’ll then demonstrate the ease of use and unrivalled flexibility of Infigo Software’s MegaEdit Pro to produce beautifully designed printed products, and showcase the new 3D previewing tool that’s proving invaluable to suppliers. This will then be printed on the relevant media using a Canon imagePRESS C700 and finished on the Duplo DC-616. The purpose of the automation is to reduce touch points throughout traditional print processes with a focus on efficiency, driving productivity. Visitors will be able to take away an iconic chocolate bar wrapped with their personalised information — designed, printed and finished within minutes. The stand will also offer high volume prints of business cards, posters and postcards — all complimentary to Print Show delegates — in a bid to allow customers to experience the benefits of web-to-print to businesses. Alistair Millar, Group Marketing Manager at Altodigital said, “The Print Show is one of our biggest exhibitions of the year and something that we, and other market leaders really look forward to” Sarah Crumpler, UK Marketing Manager for Duplo commented that ‘The Print Show provides a great platform for printers to see multiple technologies under one roof and we’re taking it one step further by collaborating with Altodigital and Infigo Software to show off this innovative workflow.’ Douglas Gibson, Managing Director at Infigo Software says ‘We’re excited to be working with Altodigital and Duplo to demonstrate to the discerning Print Show attendees how web-toprint innovations are creating real competitive advantage in the printing and packaging industries.’ Altodigital is one of the largest, independent suppliers of office technology solutions in the UK. PIXEL PROPHET
MIRACLES TAKE LONGER Last month Martin Christie left Brighton’s latest folly, the i360 observation pod, detached from its pedastal, and hanging motionless in the air like a flying saucer. It seems the image was a little prophetic as since then many of its visitors have endured some time stopped motionless while the operators tried to sort various faults that had brought the glass doughnut to standstill in mid flight.
[I]
ncorrect sensor settings were offered as one explanation, as guests rushed to the bar from one side of the platform to another, causing the tilt mechanism to panic. When those using the bar to comfort a two-hour delay in suspended animation, a further problem was discovered. The designers had failed to include a toilet in the facility under the assumption that as the whole trip would only take a matter of minutes, it wasn’t necessary. Someone, as an afterthought, had considered an emergency, and so included one of those teepee-like tents used on campsites in the spares cupboard. So there is an £85 million state-of-the-art, awardwinning, technical marvel stuck in the air with VIP guests having to relieve themselves in a canvas erection next to the bar. You couldn’t make it up. The embarasing incidents were further compounded another time by a visitor who had apparently over indulged at the said bar and was suffering from severe flatulence in the sealed unit. The consequences were extensively and graphically detailed in many local social network postings, but perhaps best summed up by the colourful Australian saying, ‘as popular as a fart in a bubble car’. Not that this has anything much to do with digital imaging, other than that it is an amusing footnote to the previous topic, but the reality to all of us who work regularly with machines designed and controlled by computers is that the one certainty is that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.
Apart from creating fantasy images, the tools in Adobe’s Photoshop are more useful in the day-to-day duties of preparing files for print. The software is designed to work seamlessly with its related programmes like Bridge and InDesign, not only to improve workflow, but to trim, size and fine-tune images that may not be immediately perfect for hard copy. Improving workflow itself should not be underestimated. Time wasting is not profitable and often results in an unsatisfactory product. Knowing when to swap from one programme to another, instead of struggling in the wrong one is an essential skill. Part of the skill involves understanding the end result, what the customer wants and the quickest way to get there. The two are not always immediately obvious. This is an increasing issue as more customers are working from apps that they do not completely understand, as they are able to save files without getting involved in the complicated process of actually creating them. Even those who claim a knowledge of Photoshop cannot entirely be believed, as they may have only a basic understanding or be familiar with only an earlier version of the product with limited functions. It may not even be the Adobe product itself, as Photoshop has become such a generic term, not everyone will appreciate the difference. The performance potential of the latest Creative Cloud from older versions is as different as a Ferrari to an old banger. I have an old laptop which I keep for spare which runs CS2, and even that seems
like an antique device when I have to use it. Mostly importantly, it is still evolving as existing tools are improved and refined, and new ones are developed. As well as the plentiful toys in the current toolbox, the use of layers is an essential part of the working space, and what separates Photoshop from many other image based programs. Layers have been around in Photoshop from the beginning, but improved functions, together with the tools, makes them more powerful and useful. By using layers you can create a duplicate image over the original, or several, and then work on any of them to apply any changes without affecting the first. This nondestructive editing enables you to explore lots of alternatives, and still be able to refer to the one you started with, and without committing it to history. You are also able to alter the strength of any effect by changing the opacity of any layer, or the position of it, to achieve the desired result. I know this is all very basic to those of you working regularly in Photoshop, but I’m just introducing it as the basic starting point to understand creative editing for those who may not be so familiar with the technique. I can’t hope to cover all of the many functions available in this column, even if I took up all of the room in the magazine, but over the next few months I shall try and simply explain some of the most useful for preparing digital images for print. There are plenty of helpful tutorials on line, from Adobe themselves, and many other experts
from different disciplines whether it’s photography or graphic design, so there’s no excuse for sitting around with nothing to do. And if there is a particular problem, a decent search engine will provide a queue of know-it-alls ready to show you exactly how to solve it. As with anything in Photoshop, there is never only one way to do something, so always check several options. That’s because Adobe appreciate we all like to do things differently, and find one approach will work better than another for no other reason than personal preference. Last month’s teleportation of the i360 pod relied extensively on Content Aware which is a relatively recent arrival in PS and which again can be used in several different ways. The most common task for customer supplied files and images is resizing or reshaping to fit the print area, or to add bleed. It was always possible to sort out size with a white or other plain border, but anything with a pattern or graduation was a problem. Content aware gets round most of that because, unlike previous tools for cloning or patching, it actually analyses the pixels to determine which are more or less important and creates a new selection to more accurately match the original. That’s a simple way to explain a very sophisticated algorithm, but at least you get the idea. You can use it as a selection on a flattened image by using the delete key and choosing the option rather than foreground or background colour. In this way you can create bleed by extending the canvas size and selecting the extra area to be treated. Because

you are letting the computer decide, it may not work precisely on every item, but a little bit of practice will determine how best to use it, or when to touch up any loose ends with the clone or paint brush. Using layers gives more control and more options, so that parts of the image that are unwanted can be completely and seamlessly removed. Instead of the delete key, which will simply do that with a selection in layers, use Edit>Fill>Content Aware and make sure the preserve transparency box is not ticked. Again a little bit of practice to find exactly the right method of selection will do the trick. Any of the tools like the various lassoos, or the more precise pen selection with paths, can do the job. It’s all a matter of the most convenient, or the most accurate, depending on what the job deserves. One of those which can require special attention is the repair and restoration of old photographs, which may be required for archive, or personal appreciation at a funeral service for example. In pre-digital days, so many memories had been left to rot in drawers and shoe boxes, only to be pulled out in a distressed state when the need arises. Here in Brighton, I have to deal with both. The Royal Pavilion and
its museum has a vast collection of memorabilia and old photographs, and for them it’s a balance between a little bit of repair on tears, scratches and stains, but without changing the authentic appearance of a bygone age. For more personal archives it’s often better to bring the figures to life as real people rather than battered, faded ghostly impressions. Even more recent portraits may have suffered neglect and need help to remove the effects of casual abuse. Nobody really appreciates the value of images until they lose them. Dealing with people and faces, rather than more abstract images has its own problems because the repairs have to be more subtle. You can’t slap a paint brush over skin and expect it to look anything better than a plastic doll. You can’t put in what isn’t there, if there are gaps in the image, but sometimes you can copy parts and blend them in to achieve a pleasing result even if it isn’t entirely truthful to the original. If an eye is in the wrong place, or even looking in the wrong direction, it will be immediately obvious because we recognise facial features and expressions instantly. If it was a tree with a few branches missing, no one would worry. In the example of the Edwardian sailor and his family, the tears in the
Thought foiling & spot UV was expensive?
background weren’t too much of a problem, but the facial flaws needed a little bit of transplant surgery. The ladies mouth needed to be reshaped and in the case of the baby, its right eye has actually been borrowed and used to repair the parts missing from the left. This job was a little bit of a favour to a valued customer, featuring his long lost relatives so it was one I could do a little bit, save and put to one side until time allowed. With more pressing jobs, like funerals, obviously there is a deadline so the priority is to do the best job in the time, and within the budget. Usually this will be part of a larger job, like the Order of Service
23
so the cost can be incorporated in the overall fee, but that extra bit of attention makes an important and priceless addition to the presentation. In the example of the sporting group shot from the fifties, the original was badly scuffed in places but I was able to borrow pieces of jacket, brims of hats and even the odd ear to restore the company to the sort of presentable state they would recognise, even if, as said, not entirely the truth. It’s all down to assessing how long it’s going to take, and how much the customer wants to spend. As we tell them, we are instant print but miracles are normally 24 hours!

East Sussex-based digital print company Elephant Print and Display has become one of the first UK companies to offer Climate Neutral Printing in association with German-based climate consultancy, ClimatePartner. As a result of this new environmental initiative, Elephant can now calculate the CO2 greenhouse gas emissions for each print job enabling a contribution to be made to an internationally recognised carbon offset project. This ensures that reforestation and protection of those natural resources is continued. The carbon emissions caused by the materials, production processes and transportation involved in each print job are all taken into account. Elephant has chosen to support The Kasigau Wildlife Korridor in Kenya, situated in the Taita Taveta District as their project to support for this initiative. As part of the process, every climate neutral printing job carried out by Elephant will be documented with its own unique ID, providing full transparency for the carbon offsetting process. At the end of each completed print application project, a certificate is then generated for each customer, identifying their total emissions involved in the production of their respective job, and detailing that they have been offset. The customer can also use their unique ID code to see for themselves how their emissions have been offset, providing clear traceability throughout the process. Elephant currently operate two digital presses and two large format machines and these are powered entirely by solar energy. The company has also recently taken possession of an extra 600 square feet at their premises in Sussex. Commenting on becoming one of the first UK print companies to offer Climate Neutral Printing with ClimatePartner, Managing Director of Elephant Print and Display, Jason Gadd, stated, “We are really pleased to be able to offer climate neutral printing and this fits in really well with the philosophy of our business.” Jason continued, “ClimatePartner have been very thorough in helping us with training and setting up the system, it works well with our MIS and our customers are very happy to contribute to climate protection with their print work.” He added, “Climate protection and the use of renewable energy has increasingly become an important part of what we do. The cost is generally only about 1% to 2% of the finished job which I think is good value, to be able to offer this service and still stay competitive is essential.”
October 2016
Commenting on their work with Elephant Print, Moritz Lehmkuhl, managing director of ClimatePartner, added, “Elephant Print is helping its corporate customers to realise their climate protection strategies and to make their contribution to climate protection. ClimatePartner is very pleased to be working together with Elephant Print, and this will help to strengthen the commitment to climate protection in the UK.” Moritz continued, “Climate change is the biggest challenge of the 21st century. Individual companies need to make their contribution as well. The use of climate neutral print products offers companies the opportunity to become active in climate protection quickly, and easily. In climate neutral printing, the greenhouse gas emissions produced by the printing process are precisely calculated, which allows the biggest emission drivers and reduction potential to be identified.” He concluded, “Through investment in internationally recognised carbon offset projects, the unavoidable CO2 emissions can then be offset, and the print products can thus be rendered climate neutral. Elephant Print makes the contribution to climate protection with ClimatePartner.” This latest environmental initiative announcement by Elephant follows the company’s installation earlier this year of 600 Solar PV panels, enabling them to run their presses and other machinery from the electricity generated. Elephant are committed to low waste and renewable energy, with all waste and consumable containers being taken for recycling. Elephant Print and Display services a mainly business orientated customer base, built up of design and marketing agencies, local authorities, other print companies and freelance graphic designers. www.elephantprint.co.uk • www.climatepartner.com
PEFC promote benefits of sustainable sourcing The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, PEFC UK used the Packaging Innovations show to promote sustainable sourcing. Participation has enabled the organisation to promote sustainable sourcing to buyers, suppliers, manufacturers and designers of packaging and packaging-related materials. Commenting on the importance of responsible sourcing, PEFC UK Chairman, Ross Bradshaw stated, “PEFC’s last global consumer survey found that more than 80% of respondents wanted to see companies sourcing materials from well-managed forests, to use a label on product to provide them with assurances of responsible sourcing.” PEFC certified products as providing companies with verification of legality and providing a low risk of controversial sources which contribute to deforestation. The CGF brings together more than 400 retailers, manufacturers, service providers and other stakeholders, with members including global players such as Coca Cola, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Kellogg’s, L’Oréal, Nestle, Proctor & Gamble, Tesco and Asda-Walmart. www.pefc.co.uk

Bouncer crowd barrier cover Do you find it easier to canvass new business when you have something new to talk about? Same old questions like who does your printing are a little old hat these days as we all strive to deliver new value in print presentation. Offering something new is not price sensitive and just trying to win on price is a no no as we all need to keep profit in our print or we won’t be around for the repeat order. Recently the QPP offices were on the receiving end of representations from Rob at trade printer Marqetspace. Covering outside street furniture with variable print is new to me and funky enough to show our Brighton Colourfast customers. Choose from the VIP bouncer crowd barrier cover and the larger building site security
fencing builder site barrier covers. Both are dye-sub printed on ‘VENT’ 100gsm polyester, with holes in the fabric to allow wind to pass through easily. Essential for the south coast club land and no doubt all major towns and cities hot spots. The specifications: Full colour print one side; front and reverse coverage; hemmed and eyeletted; cover is washable at 30º with no detergent; fire retardant and fade resistant; and normal delivery six working days. We are meeting with Rob and Marqetspace CEO Peter Gunning at The Print Show this month so watch this space for more trade products for you to resell from your business. LONDON CALLING
DUPLO TO HOST A ROYAL LONDON CALLING VIII A distinct royal flavour will be part of Duplo’s London Calling event that will include ‘remodelling’ its Surrey showroom as a 16th century palace.
[T]
he print finishing pioneer’s headquarters in Addlestone will be renamed ‘Automated Precision Palace’ on 4th October for London Calling VIII, an event that once again will demonstrate to customers how they can add value and increased revenue through faster, smarter and better finishing solutions. Visitors to this exclusive print application event will be treated to a feast of live workflow and print demonstrations, starting at noon. A royal line up of market leading products will be on display along with partner systems at Duplo’s HQ, usually known as Automation Precision House. New at Duplo’s London Calling VIII will be the iSaddle2 — building on the success of the industry-leading iSaddle saddle stitching family — the official unveiling in the UK of a new Ricoh Inline Booklet System and the UK preview of the PFi DI-CUT 300 die cutter, being launched on 11 October at The Print Show, as well as other innovations. Afterwards, VIP guests move on to Hampton Court Palace that is steeped in history. For many people today, Hampton Court Palace is Henry
VIII — hence Duplo’s royal connection with this being its eighth London Calling event. The largest kitchens of Tudor England — that served the king — are still often used to prepare meals. Sarah Crumpler, UK Marketing Manager for Duplo, said: “We know that Duplo’s line-up of products will provide a royal feast of ideas for our customers to grow their businesses. Duplo will be offering fresh inspiration to
guests through a range of new applications and innovations.” She added: “The concept of London Calling is always customer focused and this year will be no different. We’re even taking the opportunity to host a customer focus group on the day to gather customer feedback in further developing our own business, as well as helping them.” Now in its eighth year, London Calling has become an established event on the print industry calendar. Duplo will once again bring together a group of key partners from pre- to post-press to share their latest innovations. London Calling is a showcase for inspirational ideas, innovative applications, more intelligent technology and integrated solutions. The 2016 event will be at Duplo’s headquarters, in Addlestone, Surrey, on 4 October, 2016, followed by Hampton Court Palace, Surrey, for an invitation-only event. Previous venues include Sunbeam Studios, Kensington, East Wintergarden, Hilton Docklands, Tate Modern, IMAX, British Music Experience at the O2 and Somerset House. SOMETHING TO SHARE…? Break a leg
Mother: “I’m afraid our son has decided to take up acting.” Father: “What’s so bad about that?” Mother: “Well, he’s gotten so big that whenever he appears in a play, he crashes right through the floor.” Father: “Don’t worry about it. It’s just a stage he’s going through...”
Too many chiefs
A man was the first to arrive at the print shop one morning. The phone rang and he answered. When the caller asked for some specific information, the man explained that it was before normal business hours but that he would help if he could. “What’s your job there?” the caller asked. The man replied, “I’m the managing director.” There was a pause. Then the caller said, “I’ll call back later. I need to talk to someone who knows something about what’s going on.”
You can’t handle the truth! I told my boyfriend, “The last thing I want to do is break up with you... I have about five things on my list before I get to that though.”
And… smile
A boy and his mother stood in the dentist’s office, looking at a display case. “If I had to have false teeth, mother, I’d take that pair there,” said the small boy, pointing. “Hush, Willie,” interrupted the mother quickly, “Haven’t I told you it’s bad manners to pick your teeth in public?”
Relationship marketing
The other day, Nancy and I got into some petty argument. (I say it was petty. She would have said it was Armageddon.) As is our nature, neither of us would admit the possibility that we might be in error. To her credit, Nancy finally said, “Look. I’ll tell you what. I’ll admit I’m wrong if you admit I was right.” “Fine.” I said. She took a deep breath, looked me in the eye and said, “I’m wrong.” I grinned and replied, “You’re right.”
The Artist
An artist asked the gallery owner if there had been any interest in her paintings that were on display. “Well, I have good news and bad news,” the owner responded. “The good news is that a gentleman noticed your work and wondered if it would appreciate in value after your death. I told him it would and he bought all 10 of your paintings.” “That’s wonderful,” the artist exclaimed. “What’s the bad news?” “The gentleman was your doctor.”
Talking it up
Four workers were discussing how smart their dogs were. The first was an engineer who said his dog could do maths calculations. His dog was named “T-Square” and he told him to get some paper and draw a square, a circle and a triangle, which the dog did with no sweat. The accountant said he thought his dog was better. His dog was named “Slide Rule”. He told him to fetch a dozen biscuits, bring them back, and divide them into piles of three, which he did with no problem. The chemist said that was good, but he felt his dog was better. His dog “Measure” was told to get a quart of milk and pour seven ounces into a ten ounce glass. The dog did this with no problem. All three men agreed this was very good and that their dogs were equally smart. They all turned to the copier salesman and said, “What can your dog do?” The salesman called his dog whose name was “Coffee Break” and said, “Show the fellows what you can do”. Coffee Break went over and ate the biscuits, drank the milk, went to the bathroom on the paper, claimed he injured his back while eating, filed a grievance for unsafe working conditions, applied for compensation and left for home on sick leave.
Job adverts, what they really mean

Peace of mind
A neighbour asked his friend, who was celebrating 50 years of marriage, what the secret was to a long and happy marriage? His friend replied, “When we were first married, we vowed to go out twice a week no matter how little money we had and we have done so for 50 years.” “Twice a week, you say?” “Yeah. She goes out on Tuesday and I go out on Friday.”

The conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra was having an issue with the percussion section. During rehearsals, it seems they were having a major problem keeping the proper beat, and the conductor was getting madder by the moment. “Uh oh,” one of the drummers remarked. “I think he’s ready to blow.” “You’re right,” said the cymbal player. “It looks like we’re in for a real tempo tantrum!”
Doh, from the top
A young printer was leaving the office late one evening when he found the MD standing in front of a shredder with a piece of paper in his hand. “Listen,” said the MD, “this is a very sensitive and important document here, and my secretary has gone for the night. Can you make this thing work for me?” “Certainly,” said the young printer. He turned the machine on, inserted
