Experience and quality pay off for MC Signs Cheshire based MC Signs has established itself over the last twelve years as much more than a sign maker. With such experience, the company has earned an enviable reputation via a host of big brand clients, whilst still serving long standing customers in the local area. Specialising in vehicle graphics, fascia signage, shopping centre hoardings and display graphics, the company is able to answer virtually any sign and display request. With traditional sign making skills allied to a suite of Mimaki wide format printers and cutters, MC Signs offers services that range from consultation, design, production, installation and if required, full project management. It’s this sort of wherewithal that has won them high profile clients such as JCB for whom they have provided extensive vehicle wraps and creative work that really shows off the capabilities of wide format digital print. Founder and director, Matthew Cooke details the role that digital output plays for his company, using a recent and very impressive truck side graphic for JCB as an example, “We’re able to offer full colour, photographic output for clients, which we typically print to a 7 or 10 year vinyl before over laminating for protection,” he says. “We frequently combine coloured or metallic vinyl with digital print as it gives us greater creative freedom and the ability to merge a range of effects and finishes.” MC Signs vehicle bay is almost 20m long and provides an ideal environment for even the largest vehicles (the JCB side panels were some 12m by 3.5m!) and ensures a consistently high quality finish — something Cooke sets his company’s stall out with. “Providing work that exceeds our clients’ expectations is core to what we do here,” he remarks. “It’s frequently the biggest reason that customers return to us for future work, so our attention to detail is paying off.” Shopping centre branding is a further area of significant expertise for the company and a recent project was the production of a laminated hoarding

for The Original Art Shop at the Westfield Shopping Centre in Derby. The 7m long graphic was produced using a Mimaki JV33, printed onto self adhesive vinyl before being laminated and finally applied to the hoarding. The JCB work was produced as a combination of part and full wraps and expertly demonstrates the company’s digital print and application skills; whilst delivering a striking piece of branding for their client. “With this much canvas to work with, we’ve got a great opportunity to show off the best of their brand,” comments Cooke. “A high quality digital print, combined with JCB’s instantly recognisable corporate colours creates a visually arresting advert on the side of the truck.” MC Signs has recently branched out into ‘web to print’ with the launch of an online shop, so everyday items such as banner stands and sign trays can be ordered via their website (www.mcsignsshop.co.uk). The site also contains a great gallery of the company’s commissioned work and its history alongside a complete guide to the products and services the company offers. The common thread of quality runs through every element of MC Signs product range, and core to delivering this is the equipment and materials the company uses. Matthew Cooke first invested in a Mimaki outdoor durable printer in 2006 and recently added an additional Mimaki JV33 through authorised Hybrid reseller, Graphic Printing Technologies to sit alongside two Mimaki cutting plotters (and their original workhorse machine that continues to output high quality work to date). “Having briefly tried third party products I know from bitter experience that the only way I can be assured of our printers producing the quality our customers expect is to use genuine Mimaki ink.” Cooke continues; “The JV33 doesn’t miss a beat, so it’s always right first time, every time.” Looking at their long list of satisfied customers it’s evidently not just right — it’s top quality output, that’s expertly applied — which is what customers have understandably come to expect. www.hybridservices.co.uk

COVER STORY: Fastback Bound for Duplo

Duplo International has secured the UK distributorship for the internationally applauded Fastback range of binding machines. Made in the USA, these easy to use table top machines bind loose sheets into presentable documents using thermally activated binding strips. The technology is more than three times faster than a conventional punch and bind system, documents lay completely flat, are suitable for posting and at the end of their useful life the bound documents are fully recyclable. The agreement commenced on 13th August and will see Duplo stocking the full range of machines and consumables. The company is planning to utilise its highly successful dealer channel to get the products into the market. Tony Lock, UK Managing Director at Duplo explained, “Our dealers have a fantastic record of delivering our products to market. Over the last few years they have installed hundreds of IDEAL guillotines into print rooms across the country and I believe this product has an even bigger potential.” Fastback binding machines accept patented Fastback binding strips. They are made of different materials and come in 16 eye catching colours. In addition, customers can order strips branded with their own graphics, images and logos to make their documents really stand out. For clients looking to add durability and real prestige to their documents, the Fastback machines can even produce paperback and publisher quality

hardcover books. Duplo believe this solution is ideal for small digital printers looking to get into the dissertation, photobook or self-publishing market without a large investment. As Tony Lock points out, “For an outlay of just a few thousand pounds, printers can buy a system that will easily pay for itself within a matter of months. Not only that but the return on investment is potentially limitless.” he continued, “The synergy with the rest of our range couldn’t be stronger. Like all Duplo products, the Fastback machines are highly automated with binding at the touch of a button. We are delighted to have secured this deal and look forward to bringing it to market.” www.duplouk.com

INNOVA ART PARKS THE BUS AT PHOTOKINA Award winning manufacturer Innova Art will be drawing up in a traditional London red bus and celebrating the sporting highlights of London 2012 on its stand at Photokina, Cologne, 18-23 September. The sporting theme will be led by dazzling images direct from the London games, captured by Dutch photographer Soenar Chamid. Setting the pace for the entire show will be the company’s range of new and enhanced products, including world ranked digital media for photo and fine art applications, internationally acclaimed canvases and trophy winning display solutions. Only last year Innova Art won the Fine Art Trade Guild’s Innovation Award for its Jetmaster Display System but the company hasn’t rested on its laurels. Photokina marks the launch of a new, improved JetMaster, with a new filmic release liner and an enhanced pressure sensitive adhesive layer for truly trouble free handling. Exciting additional sizes, perfect for small to medium scale display, including fashionable square formats, have also been added: 5x5”, 5x71/2”, 8x8” and 8x12”. JetMaster base is a pre-cut, laminated self adhesive board. Prints made on any laser or digital printer (or customised using the JetMaster free online print utility) are simply pressed down onto the board, trimmed, folded — and hung. No bubbles, no untidy corners, no staples and no hooks. Made in minutes, a fully assembled JetMaster ‘gallery wrap’ is so light it can be hung from just one tack — a brilliantly effective solution in a sector that is always looking for high style, cost effective display options. Also on show will be the JetMaster paper, specially designed to stretch without cracking. Its unique pliability produces finished corners so neat that they are almost impossible to replicate with a heavyweight art paper or conventional canvas. The JetMaster paper is available in two finishes: Smooth

and Embossed. Embossed replicates the surface texture of canvas so closely that even an expert would find it difficult to spot the difference. Just as importantly, the JetMaster paper prints beautifully. Innova Art media has long been renowned for its image quality and the JetMaster paper is no exception. Innova Art will also be previewing the all new JetMaster Direct Print Framing System. Compatible with both hybrid and flatbed UV printers, JetMaster Direct Print is a truly innovative alternative to the now ubiquitous stretched canvas. JetMaster Direct prints and ships flat and is easily assembled into a lightweight, portable and fully recyclable product with a truly outstanding finish — time after time, whatever the skill levels in the workshop. Look out too for the new canvas textured Direct Print board. The award winning Olmec brand of fibre based, resin coated photo papers has established itself as the first choice for serious amateur and professional photographers alike. Innova will launch two new products in the Olmec range at the show. The 190gsm Photo Gloss and Lustre Lightweight papers offer photographers exciting new weights and finishes. Both papers are bright white, water resistant and single side coated. They combine the proven quality of the Olmec brand with a cost effective package of A4 and A3 sheets supplied in packs of 100. As the first international supplier of fine art media to be launched in the 21st century, Innova Art can claim to have designed papers and canvas specifically for digital fine art printing, rather than to have simply adapted existing media. As the choice of professionals and amateurs alike, Innova Art demonstrates the advantage of fresh thinking. For more details on Innova Art’s full range of digital media and other products, contact Monika Sokolowska at monikas@innovaart.com

The Print Charity announces two major initiatives The Printing Charity, a national UK charity for people in printing, publishing, graphic arts and the allied trades, has announced it is launching two major initiatives in its drive to increase the number of people it helps. The announcement was made at the charity’s industry event to promote its work, which was hosted by Baroness Dean of Thornton-le-Fylde at the House of Lords on 19 July. The charity is investing £1m of its funds in the first initiative to be launched progressively during 2012 and 2013. The intention is to work with social enterprise partners in a variety of ways, including grants to organisations and charities that are making a difference to people’s lives. In response to the difficult time the printing industry is going through, the second initiative will support people who have been made redundant from the sectors the charity exists to help. Discussions are underway with potential partner organisations to put together a package of assistance from the charity’s own grant funding and from third parties. Stephen Gilbert, Chief Executive of The Printing Charity, said: “These two initiatives have a common purpose — to help individuals and their families, to help people of all ages and to help more people throughout the UK.” For further information, please contact Stephen Gilbert, Chief Executive, The Printing Charity, 01293 542 820 stephen@theprintingcharity.org.uk or see www.theprintingcharity.org.uk

Digital Print UK unveils new website

First details of the Digital Print UK show have been unveiled by organiser Faversham House as a new website goes live for the inaugural cross industry event at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham from 5-7 November 2013. Digital Print UK, the new annual dedicated digital printing exhibition spanning three days at the UK’s premier exhibition venue, will be split into four focused areas — production, applications and output, wide format and digital labels — so visitors can efficiently spend their time navigating the event. Live demonstrations that include production printing and wide format technologies will be showcased by suppliers who are involved in the print supply chain from substrates, pre-press / media, press, post press, mailing and distribution. Digital label production is becoming of increasing interest to commercial printers as a new revenue opportunity. Faversham House says that, in addition to its general commercial print audience, it will be working with key media partners to deliver an additional footfall of converters and label printers from a variety of backgrounds such as flexographic or gravure. Another important area will be a section for “applications and output” driven by digital printing technology. Commercial printers, brand owners and print specifiers keen on finding ways to take their business forward will have the chance to see the latest developments in digital print technology and discover how they can deliver increased return on investment. Details of the show are now available on the up-dated website — www.digitalprintuk.net — launched to act as a valuable source of information for both exhibitors and visitors including the latest news on the new show. Faversham House will be making a series of other announcements in the run-up to the big event that will follow on from their other show successes. These have included Sign and Digital UK, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in March. Show director Rudi Blackett said: “The launch of our dedicated website for Digital Print UK will provide a rich source of vital information for show-goers. And, as a trusted show partner, both exhibitors and visitors in this important digital marketplace know it’s another vehicle to help us deliver another first-class event that’s not just about the latest products and software. This is a real opportunity for visitor to network, experience a mix of advice, demos and working applications of real value to their business.” Digital Print UK 5-7 November, 2013, NEC, Birmingham, Sign & Digital UK 30 April — 2 May 2013, NEC, Birmingham

The eight winners of the 2012 Print Futures Awards, the annual scheme sponsored by Unite the Union, The Printing Charity and the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), were presented with their cheques at the AllParty Parliamentary Print Group’s event at the House of Lords, London. Now in their ninth year, the awards of up to £1,500 each are open to people aged 16 to 30 years to help pay for tuition fees and other costs associated with part-time or full-time training courses for a job in the UK printing, publishing and graphic arts industries. Steve Sibbald, a National Officer of Unite, said: “This year’s winners include apprentices planning further training courses and young people undertaking degree courses. Their enthusiasm for print and commitment to working in the industry impressed the judging panel and we wish them all the best in their careers.” Stephen Gilbert, Chief Executive of The Printing Charity, commented: “Sponsoring these awards continues the ethos of the charity’s founders by helping to educate young people to enable them to earn a living wage in the industry.” Kathy Woodward, Chief Executive of The BPIF, said: “With nearly one million young people unemployed, it is critical that industry demonstrates commitment to those seeking to work and encourages both hard work and entrepreneurialism. The BPIF is delighted to support these awards.” The 2012 Print Futures Awards winners are: CHANEL STRACEY: Chanel has just finished her first year of a BA(Hons) Graphic Design at Nottingham Trent University and has a twin sister doing exactly the same course at the same time at Nottingham. Chanel plans to become a top graphics designer and is currently enjoying discovering the delights of screen printing. JACK GARDINER: Jack has just finished the second year of a BA Graphic & Media Design at the London College of Communications. In October she begins a nine month placement with a leading branding and packaging company and her current focus is on the use of colour in packaging. He currently helps run a big six-colour Mitsubishi press and is training under the guidance of the BPIF. AMY-FERN NUTTALL: Planning to become a graphic designer in the magazine publishing field Amy-Fern has a BA(Hons) in Photography from Edinburgh University but will now use her Print Futures Award to help fund

re-training at Shillington College. LEWIS KEMP: Lewis is an apprentice print finisher with FRIP Finishing and operates a sophisticated spot UV gluer. He admits he struggled through school but has now found his feet and has committed to the printing industry. He would like to increase his knowledge of graphics generally. SOPHIE BOWYER: Sophie is another successful BA Design & Colour Technology student from Leeds University where she is under the watchful eye of Programme Director, Carol Beanland. Sophie’s passion for print began when she won two local “design an ad” competitions. Now in third year of her course she will be able to fund a summer work placement and perhaps invest in a MacBook. JAKE FOULDS: Jake, from Halifax, works for The Label Makers as an apprentice on a Xeikon digital press. Having opted for an apprenticeship rather than university Jake is planning external training courses to achieve his ambition — supervisor, then production manager! International Paper ‘Heavy Weight Champion’ International Paper has announced that it is introducing a new Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified 350gsm heavy weight paper to its PRO-DESIGN range, International Paper’s flagship colour laser paper from its Saillat Mill. The new addition to the PRO-DESIGN range will complete International Paper’s digital range of papers, and the new FSC certified 350gsm weight is ideal for printing applications such as business cards, presentation folders, postcard, menus and other similar print requirements. The PRO-DESIGN range carries outstanding credentials, such as its environmentally friendly manufacturing process and accreditations to both PEFC and EU Ecolabel certifications. From the end of 2012 the whole PRO-DESIGN range will move from being PEFC certified to FSC certified, providing a further environmental guarantee and endorsement of the product’s high sustainability standards. PRO-DESIGN is produced at International Paper’s Saillat mill in France, which is one of the world’s best performing sites in terms of CO2 emissions. Since 1990, Saillat has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 78%. The Saillat mill uses thinning from certified forests or those that are in the process of becoming certified, with its main forestry supplies located within just 150km of the mill, reducing any transport related environmental impacts such as CO2 emissions. Saillat also recovers by-products from the furniture and framing industries

which represents 27% of its wood supply. In terms of energy efficiencies and performance, some 88% of Saillat’s energy requirements are met by the onsite production of green energy (biomass). Commenting on the addition of the new FSC 350gsm heavy weight paper to the PRO-DESIGN range, Mike Robertson, International Paper’s Country Manager UK stated, “We are delighted to be able to add 350gsm to our premium colour laser brand and help answer the needs from our customers for this board weight. We are also addressing our customer requirement for FSC certification at the end of 2012 when the full range will become FSC Certified.” PRO-DESIGN is International Paper’s colour laser range for professional laser printing, used by digital printers and copy centres. Its significant features include improved high whiteness 168 CIE quality. This provides sharper contrasts for excellent reproduction, whilst other features include better sheet formation, smooth surface, optimal stiffness for jam free runnability and ISO 9706 providing an anti-ageing guarantee. The PRO-DESIGN range is available in the UK through its two national merchant distributors, The Paper Company (PaperCo) and Premier Beswick. Customers within the Republic of Ireland can also obtain the range through merchant Realt Paper, Premier Paper Ireland, Glenvalley Paper and Swiftbrook. For more information and samples of PRO-DESIGN, please contact Mike Robertson, International Paper’s UK & Ireland Country Manager at mike. robertson@ipaper.com

Toshiba TBC introduces e-Studio506E Toshiba TEC UK Imaging Systems has announced the launch of its newest e-STUDIO506SE mono multifunction product (MFP), which offers advanced copy, print, scan and fax capabilities in one innovative networked unit. As part of the company’s industry leading Document Manager portfolio the easy to use e-STUDIO506SE offers unrivalled reliability and outstanding performance, with a speed of 50 pages per minute (ppm) and a high quality print resolution of 2400x600dpi. It can perform double sided printing and copying on paper sizes ranging from A5R to A3, which increases productivity while saving paper and reducing costs, and comes with a range of finishing options that allow users to staple and hole punch documents or even create a booklet. Suitable for large print jobs, it is perfect in a wide range of businesses. Its adjustable 22.8cm touch screen allows for intuitive operation and user specific template buttons can also be configured to apply even its most complex settings via a single click. Feature rich, the latest generation of Toshiba TEC’s e-BRIDGE X controller technology is also incorporated and thanks to the versatile printer driver large print jobs can even be allocated to two different e-STUDIO systems. With the e-BRIDGE Job Point plug-in technology it is possible to increase that number to as many as 10 e-STUDIO systems within a network. e-BRIDGE also provides access to Google Docs, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Exchange and other Internet based application platforms

meaning that they too can become part of a document workflow. Protection of confidential and vital information has never has been more crucial than it is today and Toshiba TEC adopts a ‘whole life’ approach to security – from document creation, to its use and disposal. As part of this ethos the e-STUDIO506SE utilises the company’s unique Secure Erase Drive (SED) technology that makes unauthorised access to information stored on it impossible. All data is encrypted with a 256-bit AES algorithm and the encryption key is stored on the hard disk itself. In addition, the SED knows which device it has been built into and will allow only this system to access the data. If the SED is removed and connected to another device authentication will fail and the encryption key is automatically deleted, making it impossible to decrypt any information. Moreover, this is all achieved with virtually no loss of performance. Chris Mills, Toshiba TEC UK Imaging Systems product manager, commented, ‘The e-STUDIO506SE is a mid-range MFP that benefits day to day business operations through its intuitive design and workflow enhancing features. It is designed to be highly energy efficient, and, as part of Toshiba’s Carbon Zero Scheme, all carbon emissions produced during its manufacture are entirely offset, making it one of the most environmentally friendly MFPs currently on the market.’ For further information call 01932 580100 or visit www.toshiba.co.uk/ imaging.

Laser transforms ordinary paper into 3D objects

Chromolux – new range, collection and website

The first applications are a bag, a cup holder and a decorative bowl. With the help of a laser cutter, design items producer Usables converts ordinary paper into 3D objects that serve as gifts and promotional items. “Fine cuts with hundredth of a millimetre precision make the paper stretchable in certain areas. It’s impossible to describe the visual impact of these objects, because no one has ever seen anything like it”, says Oliver Plantenberg, Usables CEO. Expanding objects that can be transformed back into a sheet of paper are just as feasible as constructions that retain their shape permanently. The design and loading capacity depend on the type of paper, the number of cuts and the precise positioning of each cut. A sheet of A4 is transformed into a bag by 302 precision cuts. At first glance, it is difficult to tell what it is. Not until you hold the product called Roompaper in your hands does the transformation become obvious. “Because of the large number of cuts, it’s practically impossible to design such a product by hand”, Usables designer Daniela Lust explains. “The possible applications are numerous. Extraordinary design objects can be created with a skilful combination of print and shape. The Roompaper bag looks quite amazing and attracts even further attention with its wave-like movements when carried. It’s not only marketing professionals who will be interested in this extra promotional boost in shopping streets or at fairs.” For more information please go to www.usables.de/eng.

Munken launches art workshop

According to Arctic Paper, true print quality on uncoated paper is attained when the final print result satisfies all expectations. They believe that achieving this is a matter of communication. As part of the process, Arctic Paper is about to share its extensive knowledge of uncoated paper with the release of Art Workshop – The Munken Guide to Uncoated Paper. Paper is an important carrier of information, so choosing the right paper is critical to the success of any printed project. The paper is a key part of the whole message, the design and the finished result. The Guide is a ‘bible’ for choosing and printing on uncoated paper and is a real heavyweight with over 100 pages. Launched this month it will cover all the questions that could arise in the production process – questions that often need to be discussed in depth by the client and the printer.

Considerations regarding the paper feel, the shade, the bulk and texture, all need to be carefully thought out, along with technical considerations such as lifespan, image reproduction and environmental objectives. Making the right paper choices can make a difference to the effectiveness of the final printed work. The Guide is divided into four sections dealing with paper, repro, printing and post-production and is a journey through all the phases in the printing process. “The Guide will deepen people’s knowledge on how to handle uncoated paper to achieve the desired result. This covers everything from the most basic to the most advanced, and includes new and updated information. We know that it will be appreciated and used frequently for reference in discussions between printers and their clients,” states Garry Colyer, Managing Director, Arctic Paper UK. The Art Workshop – The Munken Guide to Uncoated Papers can also be ordered from the Munken Shop, www.arcticpaper.com/ munkenshop

The Chromolux range of premium cast coated papers and boards has been refreshed, making it the best of its kind for all types of printing and finishing processes with a comprehensive selection of surfaces, colours and grammages. Six of the most popular Chromolux colours are now available in a heavier 350 g/m² weight: white, chrome, silver, gold, red and black. This provides more choice for packaging of luxury products such as fragrances, where the bulk and stiffness of a heavier-weight board gives added value to the carton. It is also especially suitable for displays, covers, cards and many other graphical applications. Selection of Chromolux papers and boards has been made as simple and straightforward as possible, with two new collection books and a practical, handy mini swatch. There is one collection book for paper and one for board. Each contains a summary of key information, such as product characteristics and benefits, range of applications and advice on printing and finishing — crucial for selecting the right product. The brochures include samples in all grammages, allowing comparison of visual and haptic properties. The collection books are supplemented by a practical mini swatch, showing the entire range of paper and board in a fan format. New look for the Chromolux brand The launch of the new range and change of the company’s name from M-real Zanders GmbH to Metsä Board Zanders GmbH provided the opportunity to refresh the Chromolux brand identity. In pure silver with a large white C, the new Chromolux design is clear, modern and symbolises the next major step into the future. New Chromolux website The Chromolux website www.chromolux.de has also been upgraded. It has a clearer layout and is equipped with all necessary technical information, making it simpler to browse through the entire new range online. A convenient order function allows you to request samples and brochures quickly, simply and free of charge. The website is supplemented by a gallery showing all kinds of applications, providing inspiration as well as demonstrating the range of possibilities available with Chromolux. www.metsaboard.com

Finishing Health and Safety starts here

Health & Safety has become well-known for all the wrong reasons in the past few years, but there is an important side to H&S. In the last decade printing and finishing has undergone a major transformation in technology and machinery. Here we have tried to highlight some of the main functions to be aware of in the Act. Digital printing machines have all but taken over from conventional printing and the rules have changed with the complete work being done in one pass. Finishing equipment is far more compact, with the new cutters and creasers that are much safer than the old heavy duty mechanical guillotines and folders.

22 | DIGITAL IMAGING | QUICK PRINT PRO | September 2012

Much ado about Digital

Martin Christie takes his inspiration from the Olympics this month with a little bit of help from William Shakespeare…

T

hankfully much of the pre-event fuss of the Olympics has been vanished by the brilliant performance of the athletes, and many thousand volunteer helpers. Few of the antics of the sponsors, however, did much to endear their products to the general public in their attempts to regulate food, drink and other services in the immediate environment. But it was not just MacDonalds and Coca Cola that determined to control the spectator’s daily menu. One of the items that came under scrutiny was digital imaging. With official sponsors Panasonic and Samsung being a major supplier of imaging, there was a major effort to prevent unauthorised capture and transmission of the action. Of course, without the extreme measure of confiscating everyone’s mobile phone camera, there was no way they could enforce a complete blanket of obscurity. When I reported in this column some years ago that the first digital lens had been inserted into a phone, I suggested that this would only be the beginning of a tidal wave that would sweep away any attempts to preserve privacy or selectivity in the public exchange of pictures. The sight of the massed ranks of the many nations competitors marching into the stadium at the opening ceremony confirmed this as they all had one thing in common — a raised hand holding a digital camera or phone! I don’t know if the authorities were prepared for this digital demonstration, but as banning the athletes would have rather fore shortened the games they had to draw a line somewhere. They drew it at cameras ‘with detachable lenses’ — effectively being the DSLR type — as being the guide line as constituting a camera for professional rather than amateur use. This would also include several smaller system cameras, that actually look like compacts, but do have a range of detachable lenses. These CSCs, as they are known, for compact system cameras, aim to fill a perceived gap in the enthusiast market. Whether sharp eyed security guards, already on the look-out for unauthorised titbits, would be smart enough to spot the difference between a CSC, a proper DSLR or the many styled replicas on the market is a matter of concern. Perhaps they would have resorted to trying to pull the lens off the body just to see. As far as I know it was fortunately never put to the test, but a precedent may have been set that may result in conflict at other public events. All of this nonsense underlines the hopelessness of any authority — even brutal regimes in the middle east — trying to control the digital image environment. Most of the new CSC cameras, including those made by Samsung, are also WiFi enabled, so unless some form of internet jamming was employed private broadcast from the stadium was possible in theory. The further irony of the ban is that it also left the door wide open for all of

the noninterchangeable lens cameras — now popularly called ‘bridge cameras’ — that are a growing part of the market. At 12 to 16 megapixels, with 24x zoom optics and full HD video capability, they are far more capable than many entry level DSLRs, and more than capable of capturing every long stride of Usain Bolt from way up in the stands. Panasonic’s marketing department may have missed an opportunity here to promote their very excellent range of Lumix models which would have slipped well under the radar. The current FZ62 retails at around £350 with specification which would have embarassed an entry level DSLR only a few years ago. The bridge camera may only have one lens, but it’s a pretty good one, generally going from a 24mm equivalent wide angle, to often over 600mm telephoto zoom in one seamless barrel roll which gives great flexibility in action, avoiding the need to change lens for different distances. The auto focus function may be a slight tardy catching up with the speed of the zoom but it’s a

September 2012 | QUICK PRINT PRO | DIGITAL IMAGING | 23

small compromise for the overall performance. If you look at the picture of the rooftops you may spot a small white object on top of the chimneys in the right side of the image. In full zoom, a split second later, this is seen in full size as a seagull, giving you an idea of the range and clarity of these cameras. In this case Fuji’s X-S1, featured last month. If you were using a DSLR to take these two pictures the bird would probably have flown in the time taken to find and change lenses. Worse, if you were using a 35mm film camera and had to pause to load a new film (Younger readers might need to access Wikikpedia for that last reference). These lenses, and the cameras they serve, are very sophisticated and it is a mark of how much we take technology for granted that their qualities are taken as the norm. Almost all quality cameras now adopt some form of image stabilisation to prevent or reduce blur in the captured picture caused by motion of the subject or movement of the camera itself. The shaky hand syndrome was familiar to old cameras, and endemic with early digitals due mostly to slow buffering as the taken image was processed. The effect was especially common at slow shutter speeds, but even at higher speeds, with an extended telephoto lens, the slightest touch caused by the pressing of the shutter could induce some loss of sharpness in the final result. Manufacturers use different methods to achieve image stabilisation. Nikon and Canon use a floating lens element which detects and compensates for movement like a gyroscope. Sony and Olympus perform a similar trick by encouraging the sensor to move. Developments like this, and several hundred others taken together, have enabled even the most common digital camera to have capabilities almost beyond imagination a decade ago. Not just still images now, but moving pictures, including high definition video is taken as standard issue.Hence the impossibility of a clear definition of a device with professional potential. An average camera in the hands of an amateur is capable of exceptional results. Whether the amateur can produce those results consistently is the test of the photographer not the camera. I know plenty of professional snappers who bemoan the fact that now anyone can take a good picture at a fraction of the price, and that is understandable as they have seen their previous market plummet. But you cannot turn back the clock on technology, and it is that same technology that allows us to have a whole new market place at our finger tips. It’s a bit like William Shakespeare bemoaning the fact that an infinite number of monkeys could write Hamlet because of the invention of the typewriter. I don’t miss the photographic work I did previously, now lost to the digital economy, nor the time taken to complete a job. I don’t miss dashing to processors and anxiously awaiting the results, and the many small dramas caused by small mistakes and mechanical mishaps. New opportunities have opened in its place, not least the fact that correct colour calibration in reproduction — for web or print — I now do myself instead of entrusting it to another breed of specialists. The new technology may have put quality imaging potential in the hands of the masses but it has equally empowered the experienced photographer who is willing to embrace it like no previous invention since the beginnings of the quality and convenient 35mm camera. It enables unparalleled control of the shooting environment, both input and output by combining the benefits of the electronic age with the experience of using the human eye to call the shots. Photographic opportunities come up unexpectedly, unless they are carefully

v i v i d.

planned and pre-prepared, so a device that is readily available to back-up a photographer’s instincts is invaluable. I am often asked to recommend a camera, and it is always difficult because it is often the expectations of the potential purchaser to be matched with the reality of their abilities as a photographer. Almost invariably my honest advice is ignored in favour of something less suited to the experience and talent of the owner, but with more apparent street credibility. I currently run two DSLRs for back-up purposes, but if I had the choice now, would happily trade the older model for a camera like Fuji’s X-S1. I could then also dispense with several of my expanded range of expensive lenses, without losing any capabilities, and with the convenience of just one self contained body in the camera bag. The very fact that so little of what is shot these days ends up facing the ultimate optical test of quality — being printed large format — does little to stretch the actual potential of current cameras, but also probably saves the blushes of many optimistic would be photographers. Often the problem is that the complicated options on current cameras confuse the owner, who in the heat of the moment forgot to select the correct one for the task in hand. That’s why the ubiquitous phone camera has become so popular. It’s almost like the more awful it looks the more interesting it becomes. The immediate impact of the instant picture is almost directly opposite to the longevity of the carefully composed photograph treasured as an item to view for years to come. But the ability to share those moments instantly — or at least within a short period of time — with friends, family and even a potential global audience — is the window digital photography has opened on the world. The improved quality and flexibility of the current crop of digital cameras means that there is a better chance of an image ending up as a work of art, or a piece for posterity, as much by accident as design. The Fuji X-S1 has a shooting option called EXR which literally calls all the shots for you, not just speed and aperture, but white balance and a whole range of clever stuff as it instantly reacts to the environment into which it is pointed. This is not infallible by professional standards, but is as close to idiot proof as current specifications allow. The processing capacity of modern digital cameras also means that even in Jpeg form, they retain so much more potential information on colour, tonal range, sharpness and the like. Even if the original image isn’t particularly great, there is enough data to recover, edit and enhance using the right software and an experienced eye. This is where a professional photographer and the expertise of the digital print shop can combine in encouraging customers to bring in the basic camera images for enhancement rather than dabble with programmes they little understand, even if they have the time to spend hours on the computer that may eventually prove fruitless. For the inexperienced, dabbling in photo editing is potentially deadly, especially as the unwary have a habit of deleting the originals and thus losing any chance of recovery or restoration. A photographer brought in a dvd of several dozen images quite recently, and he had obviously spent some time on them in editing, but when I looked at them closely he had overdone sharpening and contrast to the degree that any enlargements would reveal unsightly grain. I suggest he go back and edit the originals, but I haven’t seen him since so whether he has overwritten the files or is still editing I just can’t say!

UJF-3042 This desktop UV flatbed system has a small environmental footprint and features long-life, energy-efficient LED curing. With this versatile printer printers can print on many different substrates ranging from iPhone cases to glass and metal. The UJF-3042 is one of the most successful UV flatbed printers worldwide generating sustainable output for a wide variety of markets.

JV400-LX A revolutionary inkjet printer that combines the flexibility of a low CO2 footprint and high quality printing. The Mimaki Latex offering allows for a lower curing temperature and therefore enables print service providers to print on a greater selection of substrates. EFI’s Commitment to Greener Awareness

As a leading proponent of environmentally friendly practices, EFI has announced it is a founding exhibitor and ambassador of the first EcoPrint conference which takes place in Berlin this September. Thanks to EFI’s Fiery, digitally printed output has become a widely accepted replacement for analogue print, with workflow products perfecting efficient ondemand production, with the removal of plates and chemicals being complemented by far lower ink volumes. The company has also been instrumental in developing energy and waste saving inkjet printing systems with its VUTEk LX and Jetrion platforms. “We understand fully how integration of workflows can eliminate overproduction, so EFI’s ethos is to use less energy and fewer consumables, generating cost effective business

practices and improving the green credentials of our customers,” states Frank Tueckmantel, vice-president of corporate marketing at EFI. “Improved colour accuracy and repeatability are also key contributors to optimising processes which encourage more eco awareness by removing waste. And, by streamlining software and printer connectivity, users can maximise resources while reducing over-production. Our latest inkjet solutions are designed to save energy, too, so all these environmental factors combine to make EcoPrint the ideal event where we can show print businesses how to become more sustainable.” EFI’s award winning UV-curable printers are designed and configured with efficiency as key, with its Fiery workflow helping to reduce ink consumption by up to 20%. The wide format

VUTEk TX3250r enables print service providers to create long life, reusable output using polyester based textiles, encouraging greener practices for end customers. Its Jetrion 4900 digital label solution prevents material waste by incorporating short to medium volume capabilities with efficient rewind functionality. These versatile solutions avoid over-production, offering easy make-ready, which is chemistry free, along with very economical running costs. Similarly, the company’s business software solutions automate former labour intensive tasks, with its eCommerce and web to print solutions guaranteeing fulfilment efficiency by generating error-free processes, leading to greener business practices. ARJOWIGGINS RECYCLE PULP VOLUMES Arjowiggins Graphic has committed to source the same volume of UK office waste paper it takes to produce the amount of recycled pulp at its Greenfield Mill for its UK recycled paper market. Agnes Roger, President of Arjowiggins Graphic explains: “As already 15 — 25% of the waste paper used in the entire production process at our Greenfield mill is sourced from the UK, it was a natural step for us to guarantee to our customers that for all the recycled content of our papers sold in the UK we are sourcing its waste paper equivalent volume from the UK. This means that we will be limiting the impact of our papers on landfill, something that is especially high on the sustainability agenda in the UK. “At Arjowiggins Graphic we are dedicated to reducing our carbon emissions, rather than merely carrying out carbon balancing programmes, which is underlined by the recognition from the WWF’s Environmental Paper Company Index which rated Arjowiggins Graphic as the number one environmental fine paper company.

EcoPrint has now finalised its group of 24 show ambassadors for the inaugural exhibition due to take place in September in Berlin. The EcoPrint Ambassadors are a group of print professionals drawn from the EcoPrint Development Group, who are passionate about sustainability and each with a career steeped in print. AMBIENT CLING ONS

Think Ambient are the exclusive UK (and Eire) distributors of Clings. Clings is a unique, patented film that is embedded with an electro-static charge. Clings will stick to virtually any surface on both the printed and the unprinted side. It is removable, repositionable and damage free. Clings are made from a recyclable polypropylene. The polypropylene film is then embedded with an electro-static charge using a patented process, and laminated onto a recyclable paper back. The paper back gives stability for transportation but is also required to make it suitable to print — it is also printable itself. The material complies with the European REACH regulations and there are no harmful chemicals or materials used in the manufacturing process. There are roll and sheet versions of Clings that can be printed digitally as well as sheets suitable for offset printing. Clings are ideal for use for many applications including point of sale, pharmaceutical posters, temporary signage and ambient advertising but there are also versions that are perfect for direct mail, magazine inserts, postcards, greetings cards and many other applications. Think Ambient have unrivalled knowledge of Clings as well as expertise in unique substrates and so can help with many different types of briefs. Envelope Design is key when planning Cross-Media Campaigns It’s no secret that to effectively promote to customers today, direct mail needs to be combined with online marketing, enabling companies to track and improve the return on investment (ROI) of marketing campaigns. So much planning goes in to cross-media campaigns but the envelope’s design is often overlooked, leading to thousands of mailings landing on doorsteps but never getting opened. Leading mailing equipment supplier AMS has been specialising in the supply of envelope printers for over 20 years. The latest in their range is the digital M1 envelope printer which can produce professional and attractive full colour print, improving the likelihood of envelopes being opened. A great feature of the high speed M1 printer is that, unlike existing printers, it can print on window envelopes so postal mail shots can be branded with logos, barcodes, postage paid impressions, message lines and images. This innovative printer also enables portrait envelopes of all sizes to be printed full bleed, edge to edge at a rate of 9,000 DL envelopes per hour, producing high quality, cost effective imaging. Kevin McPheat, Managing Director of AMS, said “When planning crossmedia campaigns, envelope design is key. Direct mail has a growing importance and an effective envelope design can really help to increase response rates and build brand recognition. AMS’s newest printer, the M1, uses revolutionary Memjet ink technology (that costs substantially less than toner with no drums or fusers to replace), and has a dramatic impact on how colour printing can be used in promotional marketing activities.” Another great benefit of the innovative M1 professional desktop printer is that it gives users the freedom to print the exact amount of envelopes ondemand, eliminating the need to hold stock or charge set up fees. The single fixed printhead produces 1600dpi colour graphics in a single pass and holds five individual 250ml ink cartridges for long run times. The M1 colour printer costs under £13,000 and is available from AMS directly, for further information call 01992 460 111 or visit the website on www.ams-gb.com.

Your Print Solution grows into wide format production

Your Print Solution of High Wycombe, Bucks, has invested in the GMG ProductionSuite wide format colour management and workflow solution, to support expansion of its business into wide format production. The six year old digital print specialist is initially using ProductionSuite to drive a new 60-inch HP Designjet L26500 printer, complementing an existing Epson Stylus Pro 9600 44-in printer. Increasing demand for poster and other large format work from customers such as the Wimpy Restaurant franchise for whom Your Print Solution provides print via an HP Indigo 7000 digital press, in addition to the Epson printer, meant that additional capacity was required. Having been a GMG customer since 2004, director David Jackson was more than happy to continue to use GMG solutions to maximise colour quality and consistency from the “GMG ProductionSuite has definitely helped our move into wide format work,” confirms Jackson, adding, “We hadn’t dealt with banners, eyelets or hem ons before, but the software has great educational value in helping us to understand wide format issues. The Editor module is very easy to use; as well as allowing a high level of editing, it assists with handling the calculations that relate output size, viewing distance and image resolution, for example.” Simon Landau, technical sales specialist, GMG UK, comments: “This is just the beginning of Your Print Solution’s move into wide format production. With its drivers for the widest range of output devices and extensive support for finishing and related equipment, GMG ProductionSuite will be able to support their further expansion in whatever direction they choose to take.” www.gmgcolor.com 27

Why bother with employee screening?

Recruitment compliance and employee screening made simple.

S

electing the right employees is one of the most complex and time-consuming tasks for employers. In addition to the financial cost and possibility of legal action, increasing regulatory requirements place an obligation on employers to demonstrate that they have taken all reasonable steps to validate the integrity and credentials of their employees. Employee screening is the only sure way to comply with these requirements. The recent rise in recruitment fraud had led both the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and City of London Police to urge recruiters ‘to carry out rigorous ID checks’ to prevent employers becoming victims of ID theft. These are perhaps some reasons why you should bother with recruitment compliance and employee screening: • ‘Right to Work’ recruitment compliance is part of the UK’s Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006 • you can receive up to a £10,000 fine and negative PR for employing illegal immigrants • in March 2008 there were 76.8 million NI numbers in the UK, with a population of only 61 million • about 1,500 employees are dismissed for fraud each year, but these are the only ones caught We know how important recruitment compliance knowledge and expertise is for organisations conducting employee screening. We are committed to continual investment in compliance research and monitor the frequent regulatory changes that may impact your employee screening programme.

The Old Man and the Sea

Order…Order!

There is a book called Disorder in the Court. These are things people actually A seaman meets a pirate in a bar, and they take turns to tell their adventures said in court, word for word, taken on the seas. The seaman notes that the down and now published by court reporters - who had the torment of pirate has a peg leg, hook, and an eye staying calm while these exchanges patch. Curious, the seaman asks, “So, how did you end up with the peg-leg?” were actually taking place. The pirate replies, “I was swept Some of these overboard into a school of sharks. Just as my men were pulling me out, a are excellent ... shark bit off me leg”. Q: What is your date of birth? A: July “Wow!” said the seaman. “What about fifteenth. Q: What year? Q: And “How did you get the eye patch”? “A seagull dropping fell into me eye”, what were you doing at that time? Q: She had three children, right? A: Yes. replied the pirate. “You lost your eye to a seagull Q: How many were boys? A: None. Q: dropping?” the sailor asked. Were there any girls? “Well...” said the pirate, “That was my first day with the hook.”

Geometry Homework There were three Indian squaws. One slept on a deerskin. One slept on an elk skin and the third slept on a hippopotamus skin. All three became pregnant and the first two each had a baby boy. The one who slept on the hippopotamus skin had twin boys. This goes to prove that the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides.

Thanks for the memories Two elderly couples were enjoying friendly conversation when one of the men asked the other,” Fred, how was the memory clinic you went to last month?” “Outstanding,” Fred replied. “They taught us all the latest psychological techniques: visualisation, association, etc. It was great.” “That’s great! And what was the name of the clinic?” Fred went blank. He thought and thought, but couldn’t remember. Then a smile broke across his face and he asked, “What do you call that flower with the long stem and thorns?” “You mean a rose?” “Yes, that’s it!” He turned to his wife, “Rose, what was the name of that memory clinic?”

Sorry this is a bit heightist A dwarf walked into a GP’s waiting room. “Does the doctor treat someone like me?” he asked the receptionist. “Yes” she answered, “but you’ll have to be a little patient.”

Q: How was your first marriage terminated? A: By death. Q: By whose death was it terminated? Q: Can you describe the individual? A: He was about medium height and had a beard. Q: Was this a male, or a female? Q: Doctor, how many autopsies have you performed on dead people? A: All my autopsies are performed on dead people. Q: All your responses must be oral, OK? What school did you go to? A: Oral. Q: Do you recall the time that you examined the body? A: The autopsy started around 8:30pm. Q: And Mr. Dennington was dead at the time? A: No, he was sitting on the table wondering why I was doing an autopsy on him. Q: What was the first thing your husband said to you when he woke up that morning? A: He said, “Where am I, Cathy?” Q: And why did that upset you? A: My name is Susan. Q: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse? A: No. Q: Did you check for blood pressure? A: No. Q: Did you check for breathing? A: No. Q: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy? A: No. Q: How can you be so sure, Doctor? A: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar. Q: But could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless? A: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law somewhere.

Why, oh why… • Why does the sun lighten our hair, but darkens our skin? • Why women can’t put on mascara with their mouth closed? • Why don’t you ever see the headline “Psychic Wins Lottery”? • Why is “abbreviated” such a long word? • Why is it that doctors call what they do “practice”? • Why is it that to stop Windows, you have to click on “Start”? • Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker? • Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

Cover up Friendship between women: A woman doesn’t come home one night. The next day she tells her husband that she had slept over at a girlfriend’s house. The husband calls his wife’s 10 best friends. None of them know anything about it. Friendship between men: A man doesn’t come home one night. The next day he tells his wife that he had slept over at a friend’s house. The wife calls her husband’s 10 best men friends. Eight of them confirm that he had slept over, and two claim that he was still there.

and another thing… • Why isn’t there mouse-flavoured cat food? • When dog food is new and improved tasting, who tests it? • Why didn’t Noah swat those two mosquitoes? • Why do they sterilise the needle for lethal injections? • You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? • Why don’t they make the whole plane out of that stuff? • Why don’t sheep shrink when it rains? • Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together? • If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?

Compliment slip Marty was in his usual place in the morning sitting at the table, reading the paper after breakfast. He came across an article about a beautiful actress that was about to marry a football player who was known primarily for his lack of IQ and common knowledge. He turned to his wife with a look of question on his face. “I’ll never understand why the biggest jerks get the most attractive wives.” His wife replied, “Why thank you, dear!”

A Woman’s Random Thoughts If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it will always be yours. If it doesn’t come back, it was never yours to begin with. But, if it just sits in your living room, messes up your stuff, eats your food, uses your telephone, takes your money, and doesn’t appear to realise that you had set it free...You either married it or gave birth to it. Insanity is my only means of relaxation. Reason to smile: Every seven minutes of every day, someone in an aerobics class pulls a hamstring. Women over 50 don’t have babies because they would put them down and forget where they left them. One of life’s mysteries is how a two pound box of chocolates can make a woman gain five lbs. My mind not only wanders, it sometime leaves completely. The best way to forget all your troubles is to wear tight shoes. The nice part about living in a small town is that when you don’t know what you’re doing, someone else does. The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight because by then, your body and your fat are really good friends. Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today. Sometimes I think I understand everything, then I regain consciousness. I gave up jogging for my health when my thighs kept rubbing together and setting my knickers on fire. Amazing! You hang something in your closet for a while and it shrinks two sizes! Skinny people irritate me! Especially when they say things like, ‘You know, sometimes I just forget to eat.’ Now I’ve forgotten my address, my mother’s maiden name, and my keys. But I’ve never forgotten to eat. You have to be a special kind of stupid to forget to eat. A friend of mine confused her valium with her birth control pills. She had 14 kids, but she doesn’t really care. They keep telling us to get in touch with our bodies. Mine isn’t all that communicative but I heard from it the other day after I said: ‘Body, how’d you like to go to the six o’clock class in vigorous toning?’ Clear as a bell my body said, ‘listen witch... do it and die.’ The trouble with some women is that they get all excited about nothing and then they marry him… I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are: eating too

Spam fritter A man who was just married was flying to the Florida Keys for a business trip. His new bride was to accompany him the next day. When he got there he E-mailed his wife to let her know he made it there safely. When he sent the E-mail he miss-typed the address. In Boston, a grieving widow, whose husband has recently passed away, receives the E-mail. She reads it, screams, and faints. Hearing her grandmother’s cry, the widow’s 18-year-old granddaughter runs into the living room to see the computer on with a message. It reads: Dear love, Just got here. Preparing for your arrival tomorrow. Can’t wait to see you. Love, Me. P.S. Sure is hot down here.

In a restaurant window, “Don’t stand there and be hungry, come in and get fed up.” Inside a bowling alley, “Please be quiet. He pulls the guy over and demands; “I thought I told you to take these penguins to the zoo yesterday?” The guy replies, “I did. Today I’m taking them to the beach!”

Happy Families Seems an elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, “Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased you can hear again.” To which the gentleman said, “Oh, I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will five times!”

…and says, ‘Morning.’

Revenge of the salesman A mother and her five year old daughter were travelling in a London taxi. The taxi drove past an area where prostitutes were on almost every corner. Asked the daughter ‘Mum who are those people?’ A difficult one for the mother...The mother paused for a while, trying to find an answer to the question. Replied the mother ‘They’re sales people my child.’ The taxi driver said in a very loud voice’ You are lying, they’re prostitutes’ The mother was not happy about the taxi driver’s response and attitude. After 30 minutes, asked the daughter’ Mum do prostitutes bear children too.?’ Replied the mother ‘Yes, my child, where do you think taxi drivers come from?’

As I lay on my bed, thinking about you… I feel this strong urge to grab you and squeeze you, because I can’t forget last night. You came to me unexpectedly during the balmy and calm night, and what happened in my bed still leaves a tingling sensation in me. You appeared from nowhere and shamelessly, without any reservations, you laid on my naked body...you sensed my indifference, so you started to bite my body without any guilt or humiliation, and you drove me crazy all night. Finally I went to sleep. Today when I woke up, you were gone, I searched for you but to no avail, only the sheets bore witness to last night’s events. My body still shows your marks, making it harder to forget you. Tonight I will remain awake waiting for you...as soon you appear I will quickly grab you and won’t let you go. I will crush you with my passion... you’re going to be one very squashed mosquito.

The other man replies, ‘No, just walking the dog.’
