CFH Invests In Xerox Iridesse Digital Press CFH, a leader in secure multichannel communications, has bolstered printing capabilities with a major investment in Xerox workflow solutions and cutting edge presses. This includes the acquisition of the Xerox Iridesse Digital Press, Xerox Versant 4100 Digital Press, Xerox FreeFlow Core and Xerox FreeFlow Vision workflow solutions. The move solidifies CFH’s position as an innovative provider of multichannel communications for clients across the public, private and third sectors. New capabilities, such as foil-like effects, iridescent hues, and fluorescents speciality printing that can help capture readers’ attention, will be enabled by the Xerox Iridesse. Incorporating Xerox FreeFlow Core further enhances prepress automation for existing customers, seamlessly integrating with CFH’s back office and the recently announced Xerox FreeFlow Vision Software. This software increases

efficiency with automated, real time data on production print operations within Xerox and non Xerox environments. In addition, these significant investments also position the company to attract new clients and seize emerging market opportunities, especially across

web to print solutions. “Investing in class leading Xerox workflows and technology, particularly the additional functionality of the Iridesse, will give new and existing clients more choice and effectiveness in their communications while adding value to our capabilities as we

pursue market opportunities,” commented Steve Cray — Group Production Director. “For over 20 years, CFH has chosen Xerox innovation to complement its growth and commitment to delivering exceptional communication solutions. This investment in the wider Xerox eco-system leverages leading edge Xerox technologies and automated workflows that deliver even better service and innovation to clients and prospects,” said Nick Bridge, General Manager of Graphic Communications and Productions Systems UK. The move comes on the heels of CFH’s 45th anniversary as a trusted provider of secure printing, with its pioneering hybrid mail solutions, Docmail, used by 30,000+ organisations. It signals the next phase in the company’s transformation into a multi-channel communication provider. www.xerox.com

Optichrome brings Perfect Binding In-House with Horizon Optichrome Ltd can now offer faster turnaround times and say yes to more work after bringing perfect binding in-house. The Woking operation’s enhanced operational flexibility follows investment in a Horizon BQ-270V single clamp perfect binder from Intelligent Finishing Systems (IFS). Optichrome Ltd celebrated 60 years in business last year and specialises in high quality litho, personalised digital print and mailing. It runs two, five colour, Heidelberg XL 105 and XL75 litho presses, and two Ricoh Pro C9210 digital colour presses. Production Manager Tony Clark explains: “We reviewed how much we were spending on perfect binding and believed, with the right machinery, we could keep a large percentage of it in house, drastically reducing the turnaround times and save on transportation costs. There was also the potential to win more business as we would be more competitive and quicker. “We already had a Horizon SPF-200L bookletmaker which has proven to be a great investment, speeding up production and completing a larger variety of finished book sizes. It is well built and reliable. We tested the BQ-270 at the IFS showroom and then visited the Horizon factory in Germany. I was able to network and meet other printers who had experience of using the BQ-270 and the feedback was largely positive. We also researched what else was on the market. We believed for our budget and requirements the BQ-270 was the best system available.” 4 | FEBRUARY 2024

As for the impact it has made since its installation in November Tony says: “We have kept all small run perfect binding in-house and we are extremely impressed with how easy the machine is to operate and the quality of product we can produce.” As for working with IFS he states: “We have a great relationship. The team is very pleasant and I really like working with everyone. They are very responsive and helpful.” The Horizon BQ-270V single clamp perfect binder offers high quality perfect binding and on-demand production of variable thickness books. It includes an automated, sensor activated digital caliper system which measures book block thickness and automatically transfers this data to the binder for quick, automated set-up for books of different thicknesses. It features a large 10.4″ intelligent colour touchscreen, job programming, and a compact configuration. www.ifsl.uk.com QUICKPRINTPRO.CO.UK

The Valley Group invests in two Kudus Retail marketing specialist The Valley Group has installed two swissQprint Kudu flatbed printers, ensuring the business continues to provide clients with the latest in exceptional Free Standing Display Units (FSDU). Valley saw two Kudus installed in November 2023 at the firm’s head office in Bingley, West Yorkshire. With floor space at a premium the two machines use the same area as the previous large inkjet flatbed press they replaced, adding extra flexibility and efficiency to Valley’s production. “I am a nervous buyer, yet I can honestly say this is the first time that an investment has exceeded my expectations,” said Jonathan Haggas, Valley’s Managing Director. “From their easy install to their intuitive use and exceptional print quality, our Kudus are having a huge impact — we are really, really pleased!” With over 130 years of working with the biggest global brands, Valley supports customers in achieving outstanding retail success at the point of purchase. Its innovative FSDUs play an essential role in delivering high

Our purchase decision became obvious, so much so that we decided to invest in two machines!” With their roll to roll and dual roll capabilities, 304 m² per hour maximum output, and combination of six colours, white and varnish, Valley has been incredibly pleased with the results the Kudus have already delivered. impact in-store promotions, and the Valley team is always focused on ensuring the best quality and sustainability from its print. A thorough market review The business decided to invest in new equipment to continue its leadership position and carried out a thorough review of the printer market. As part of this process, Valley contacted swissQprint to evaluate the qualities of the Kudu. Initially the team spent a day at the FESPA exhibition, and this was soon followed by a visit to swissQprint’s UK HQ in Bracknell, where a wide range of Valley’s materials were tested. The Kudu’s clever Tip Switch vacuum expertly dealt with the

EFFICIENCY AND SUSTAINABILITY Since installing the two Kudus, Valley is also benefiting from their efficient running costs and small ecological footprint. Using only 2.2 kilowatt-hours of electricity per machine, equal to an average kettle, energy use is minimised and provides significant savings of over £100 per day when compared to the one printer the Kudus have replaced. The flexibility, sustainability and efficiency that these printers are providing clearly demonstrates their capabilities for the most exacting retail environments. www.swissqprint.co.uk

Hybrid debut trio of new Mimaki products at Sign & Digital UK Exclusive UK and Ireland Mimaki distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd will present three new printers at Sign & Digital UK 2024. Comprising a pair of LED UV printers and the company’s latest and fastest direct to film model, all offer tangible upgrades and benefits over alternatives. The first of the launches is the latest addition to the 330 Series, the UCJV330-160 LED UV integrated printer/cutter. Building on the success of the eco solvent and dye sublimation models, this 1.6m production machine will offer highly creative capabilities coupled with ultra low running costs, thanks to a raft of features and technologies. Incorporating white and clear into its vibrant, quick drying inkset, the new UCJV330-160 can print high quality images on traditional media used for outdoor sign and graphics applications, as well as translucent, transparent, and coloured materials, including PET, polyurethane and other films, textiles such as lightbox material and uncoated paper. Being an integrated printer/cutter, the UCJV330-160 is also equipped with advanced features for contour cutting to deliver stickers, decals and labels. A number of the UCJV330’s efficiencies are

shared with the second Mimaki launch: the new UJV100-160Plus LED UV printer which will have its first showing at an exhibition at Sign & Digital UK 2024. A competitively priced model that offers great potential for companies investigating the opportunity that UV roll-to-roll printing can offer their business, it delivers high quality print onto an impressive range of materials and incorporates white and clear inks to maximise creative potential. “Visitors to the exhibition, co-located with Printwear & Promotion, will see the very latest Mimaki technology immediately upon entering the hall, with Hybrid’s stand located directly at the entrance to Hall 2 at the NEC,” states Hybrid Sales Director, Andrew Gregory. “Our stand offers numerous examples of Mimaki

hardware and inks that deliver significant cost savings, productivity enhancements and overall efficiencies that transfer into real world commercial advantage for companies looking to step up their digital print capabilities.” The third Mimaki printer making its debut is the new TxF300-75, Mimaki’s fastest direct to film printer offering three times the productivity of its hugely successful launch model, the TxF150-75. “With the event running alongside Printwear & Promotion, we anticipate an even greater interest in the new Mimaki DTF printer than we saw with the phenomenal response to the launch of the TxF150-75 earlier this year,” anticipates Gregory. The latest TxF model continues Mimaki’s focus on delivering a stable, reliable and high quality solution with the TxF300-75 including an unprecedented twoyear warranty as standard. Hybrid will also be demonstrating additional Mimaki technology ranging from entry level solvent printers to high production large format flatbed UV. “We look forward to welcoming visitors to the show to guide their investment towards products that will genuinely benefit their business,” Gregory concludes. www.hybridservices.co.uk

New Epson’s entry-level DTG printer Epson has introduced the market’s first entry level DTG (Direct to Garment) printer that can print directly onto dark, as well as light, fabrics. Completing Epson’s industry leading range of hybrid DTG and DTF (Direct to Film) printers, the SC-F1000 will be of particular interest to retailers and small businesses that require a cost effective solution with the flexibility to print on a wide range of fabric types, either light or dark. Using Epson’s unique PrecisionCore Micro TFP printhead technology, coupled with NVT (Nozzle Verification Technology), which ensures exceptional image quality and stability, the SC-F1000 is the only printer in its category to include white ink, enabling it to print directly onto dark garments and direct to film. Image quality is further enhanced with the use of Epson’s UltraChrome DG2 inks, which reduce bleed from yellow 8 | FEBRUARY 2024

and black, while a vivid colour profile emphasises richness in graphic designs. With both DTG and DTFilm capacity, the SC-F1000 has the flexibility to print on a wide range of fabric types enabling customers to print on products including t-shirts, hoodies, bags, sweatshirts, and cushions, making the printer ideal for providing instore printing in real time. With a highly compact design, ideal for retail environments, the SC-F1000 can be installed in smaller workspaces, and the absence of a fan means that it can be easily situated against a

wall. Simple to use, the SC-F1000 offers a range of features that deliver intuitive, accurate and high quality printing. A large opening lid, for example, simplifies the process of setting the garment or film onto the platen, and platen sensors detect uneven settings to avoid printing errors. The product also features auto gap adjustment, which sets the platen to the optimum height for printing without manual intervention. Operation of the SC-F1000 is via a simple and intuitive touchscreen. Offering USB or Wi-Fi connectivity options, the SC-F1000

also includes a range of features which minimise user maintenance and increase total productivity, such as auto-cleaning and UltraChrome DG2 ink pouches, which are quick and simple to replace. The flexibility and productivity of the SC-F1000 is further improved through Epson’s bundled GarmentCreator2 software, which includes pre-sets for fast, easy printing by DTG & DTF. “Demand for the entry level DTFilm has grown significantly in the last three years,” said Tom Owers, Business Manager, Commercial & Industrial at Epson UK, “This exciting development from Epson offers small businesses an extremely affordable option that delivers outstanding quality, and a range of advanced productivity-boosting features. “We look forwards to showcasing the SC-F1000 at Printwear and Promotion LIVE! together with our partner Xpres at their stand.” www.epson.co.uk QUICKPRINTPRO.CO.UK

The smallest machine in its class, with a full duplex engine measuring less than ten metres, it incorporates the latest generation ink and temperature controlled inkjet heads. It introduces a number of ground breaking technologies that achieve a maximum resolution of 1200 x 1200dpi, a maximum speed of 150mpm — creating a 50% increase in production output compared to previous generation presses — and focuses on maximising productivity to drive down the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

They include: • Faster start up times with new ‘firefly’ dryer technology. An innovative configuration of small, heated rollers that bring the press up to temperature in less than half the time of a typical drying system. • Next level automated quality control with a fully incorporated RICOH Pro Scanner first introduced as an option on the RICOH Pro VC70000. The scanner actively monitors multiple facets of print quality and constantly reviews the performance of each individual head allowing the Pro VC80000 to automatically maintain a consistently high level of output quality. Colour to colour and front to back registration are automatically controlled and corrections immediately implemented. • Elimination of manual image adjustment with a spectrophotometer for real time monitoring of colour reproduction. Any variance in the

A SmartStart feature allows automated machine setup prior to the start of a shift without an operator on site. • Enhanced communication for inline finishing facilitates complex end to end solutions working more effectively. Auto splicing units are also supported for nonstop production. • Intelligent communication enables maintenance and

Service intervention can be predicted, and data collected to improve operational efficiency. “Our high speed inkjet clients share similar production challenges: they need high speed capacity to fulfil large orders and tighter turnaround times, and tools to make operating their presses easier and more efficient,” said Eef de Ridder, Vice President, Graphic Communications Group, Ricoh Europe. “The RICOH Pro VC80000 is built on what made the previous generation a client favourite and is a testament to our commitment to helping clients solve their challenges. It sets a new standard in automation and data first intelligence to increase productivity and usable output with consistency across operators and shifts. Following closely on the release of the B2 sheetfed RICOH Pro Z75, it cements Ricoh’s status as a market leader1 in production inkjet printing.” 1: Ricoh was positioned in the Leaders category of the 2023 IDC MarketScape Worldwide High Speed Inkjet Press Vendor Assessment.

All Print Design pursues growth with Epson Label specialist All Print Design has become the first UK business to invest in Epson’s latest industrial label press, the SurePress L-4733AW, in an effort to spearhead growth and expand its customer base in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and the UK. Established in 2003, the Londonderry manufacturer of both long and short run labels has serviced a wide variety of sectors, including food and craft makers, from small local companies to nationwide branches, with a broad range of labels and foils. Ruth Clinton, Production Manager at All Print Design, commented: “Our previous Epson Surepress was Epson’s first generation system, which had been in operation with us for a number of years. It’s a great piece of kit, with consistent high quality print and great support from Epson. As the market for short run digital label print continues to grow, Epson Surepress technology has proven to be the perfect solution to continue to build on this fast evolving label market. After deciding it was time to replace our existing press, we had multiple conversations with Epson. We were keen to upgrade to the newest possible system and were

guided through the various options before deciding to invest in the Surepress L-4733, while Epson took the previous unit away for refurbishment and re-use.” The SurePress L-4733AW is a major upgrade to the SurePress 4000 series and offers a combination of quality, consistency, repeatability, and higher speed print modes. Using Epson’s newly improved AQ4 inkset — CMYK with green, orange, and white — it delivers a wider colour gamut and precise colour matching on a greater variety of substrates. This allows label converters and commercial printers to achieve higher productivity and dependable performance on a greater variety of substrates. The new SurePress device also offers simplified, automated maintenance features designed to maximise

uptime with minimal operator intervention, meaning a faster, more efficient, reliable workflow and shorter turnaround times. Ruth expands: “It has a quicker production speed than the press it replaced and reduced maintenance times, so we are able to run even more efficiently. We can continue to offer both new and existing customers high quality short runs of digital labels without the need for costly plate investments. We are also able to offer fast turnaround times with minimal setup, so our customers can continue to receive high quality labels at a great price for one off promotions, trials, and other short run needs.” She adds: “We expect that the new press will allow us to continue to expand our customer base both within Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as well as

the UK as a whole. Along with existing technology we can offer a complete label solution for both large and small, new, and existing customers. It will also enable us to continue to service current customers with an emphasis on quick turnaround times and great quality print.” The installation was quick and easy: “As we are already very familiar with Surepress technology it has been a seamless switchover from our previous machine to this one. Because we wanted a smooth transition from one press to the next and in view of how happy we have been with Epson over the previous seven years we didn’t look anywhere else.” Ruth concludes: “We have been working with Epson for a number of years and the service and support we have received has been second to none. We are delighted that this investment continues the relationship for the years to come as well.” www.epson.co.uk

Too true to be good Long before computers, the cautionary phrase too good to be true was in common usage to temper the enthusiasm for some apparently unmissable bargains or idyllic visions of holiday destinations, for example, which were common in advertising goods and services from the earliest days of mass promotion. You can’t always take for granted that what you see is the reality. Martin Christie writes…

N

ow, the publication tools have become more sophisticated, and with the recent introduction of artificial intelligence, there is even more reason to remind ourselves of that necessary caution. It may even now be too late for a generation — and not even one born in this century — that sees little more than apparitions on a computer screen to establish what is real and what is an illusion. Indeed, by the end of this year, we may well see the smoke and mirrors pushed to the limit in the fog of general election fever in this country and abroad. A salutary example of the dangers of believing what an electronic mind provides as evidence is surely the scandal of the Post Office, who sooner believed that a machine was more trustworthy than employees with years of exemplary service. As I have mentioned before, the biggest risk of artificial intelligence is us not questioning it. Of course, as recent events show, there are far more serious reasons to worry about the automatic acceptance of AI in all areas of modern life. Still, even in our particular world of print-on-demand, there are issues yet to be faced. The copyright laws have obviously been made virtually redundant in the digital world in all but blatant cases, and investigating metadata is necessary to establish what is original, especially with machines that can now create almost perfect forgeries. But there are still legal constraints on those of us who publish and, therefore, distribute images and information which may yet be brought into serious scrutiny. Who can tell where this slippery slope will take us. Twenty years ago, the inventor who thought it would be a good idea to put a camera on a phone probably thought it would be no more than a good-selling gimmick. Instead, two decades on, it has become the most intrusive invasion of public privacy and the viewing obsession of millions. Instead of appreciating real life, many just share edited fantasies of 14 | FEBRUARY 2024

an alternative one. The genie is out of the bottle, and nothing will get him back in again or predict where he leads. So for those of us who want to know what is a real human and what is the creation of a machine, how can we decide? Many years ago, one of the founders of computer calculations, Alan Turing, suggested a test that could determine the difference by comparing the feedback from both. More recently, a similar test has been applied to AI-generated text and imaging and found that while humans still scored higher, a significant minority were fooled by the replicant. Rather ironically, one of the clues is often not the mistakes that an artificial imagination makes but the fact that some of its creations are too perfect to be true. Frail humans may make mistakes, but often, that is what leads to creative learning and progress. A machine that thinks it cannot make mistakes is fundamentally flawed. But I leave that conundrum for smarter minds than mine, hopefully with organic cells rather than electronic ones!

MOVING ON In the real world, you may have noticed that this month’s column is shorter than usual due to the disruption of moving the business during the seasonal break. After thirty years and all the changes in the transition from an analogue copy shop to computer-based digital production, it was well overdue. Moving is meant to be one of the most traumatic events, next to a divorce and

similar human dramas, and this one didn’t disappoint. If you have moved shop, you will know. If you haven’t but are planning it, this is a word of warning. Moving the big stuff — the printers, the finishing kit, the desks, may seem like a big task. But believe me, that’s the easy bit! When all that stuff has gone, you realise how much is still left to shift — all the bits and pieces you needed to complete the regular day-to-day workflow, as well as the things you kept in case they might come in handy at some time. It is well known that clutter expands to fill the space available, and after three decades and having plenty of space, we had no shortage of things that might have been useful once, or maybe if we ever needed one. So, downsizing to a smaller but more efficient premises was a good choice. Still, it did mean a ruthless attack on all the accumulated jumble generated by a wellused workshop with an excess of storage space. It was at least a bonus for some of the local rummagers who could pick through the discarded bones in search of anything going free that might be useful. The similarity to a divorce or other separation is the often heated debate over what you keep and what you throw out, and then, if you keep it, where to put it. After all the dust is settled, the boxes are unpacked, and the pieces are put neatly into place, you are ready to welcome your first customer — and he asks if you have a pencil. Doh, where did we put them? QUICKPRINTPRO.CO.UK

IPIA meets the Chancellor and champions print The IPIA has continued to champion print at the heart of Government — with its Chair Charles Rogers having attended a Business Leaders Reception at No10 Downing Street at the invitation of the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt MP. This is the second Business Leaders Reception attended by the IPIA, in addition to two formal meetings with special advisors to the Prime Minister — all held at No10. The event took place on December 20th, and its aim was to bring together influential representatives from key sectors of the UK economy and foster collaboration between them. Charles met the Chancellor following his address to the reception. They discussed the projected impact of the policies announced in his recent Autumn Statement — while impressing on him the critical importance for print to be included in manufacturing support initiatives, such as the Energy intensive Industries Scheme. Charles comments: “To be invited as the Chair of the IPIA to a reception hosted by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, is recognition of how important the print and paper industries is to the health of the UK economy. During our conversation he was receptive to the points being put across in regards to the need for further print and paper industry support, and welcomed further representations.

“In fact, in a broader sense it’s not the IPIA being invited, but the entire print and paper industries. Sectors such as finance, IT, life sciences, hospitality, health care and fast growing entrepreneurial start ups — to name a few — were all in attendance. This is so that Government can either learn from them, or impress upon them, strategy or policy to improve the economy.” Charles continues: “The reception provided a fascinating insight into how other sectors view ours. It also provided a valuable platform to raise the profile of our industry and highlight how critical it is to the functioning of so many other parts of the economy.” Charles continues: “I was immensely proud to represent our industry and the IPIA. Our repeated invitations to No10 reflect how far we have come over the last few years — and it is very rewarding to see the hard work and perseverance of our Association making an impact. “We will continue to advocate for policies that will address the issues reported by IPIA members, industry businesses and allied associations — which are hindering our industry’s growth and long term stability. Our work will continue in 2024 and we welcome, and would encourage, engagement from the industry to represent its interests.” info@ipia.org.uk

isitors will have a unique opportunity to visit some big names in both halls at the colocating Sign & Digital UK and Printwear and Promotion Live! exhibitions at the NEC from 25th to 27th February 2024 After announcing the co-location of Sign and Digital UK and Printwear and Promotion Live! at the NEC, several companies will be exhibiting at both shows. With a large crossover in terms of sign companies moving into textile, garment and personalised product printing and print companies moving into sign-making, several exhibitors have taken the opportunity to be represented in both halls. Graham Jones, Head of Marketing for Grafityp, says, “Being part of SDUK 18 | FEBRUARY 2024

is essential to showcase our products and services and connect with current and potential customers. It also allows us to demonstrate our commitment to the industry and engage with a diverse audience. The co-location of SDUK with Printwear and Promotion Live! is advantageous for us and our customers. It provides a synergistic platform where diverse segments of the industry converge. This collaboration enhances the overall experience for visitors by offering a broader range of products and services under one roof.” Joey Kim, Managing Director for Inktec Europe, adds, “2023 was the first time we had exhibited at Printwear and Promotion Live! and it made perfect sense for us to be there as we launched our complete

DTF Solutions range. We are delighted to be back at Sign & Digital UK this year, and from our perspective, the co-location of the shows will attract a mix of PSPs that work across a wider cross section of the industry. This means there will potentially be those who are interested in exploring how to broaden out into large format print. Equally large format printers who are intrigued by DTF and UV-DTF and the additional revenue opportunities this could generate for them will be looking to find out more.” Rob Goleniowski, Head of Sales UK & Ireland at Roland DG EMEA, says, “Sign & Digital has always been an important date on the Roland DG calendar, an event our team eagerly anticipates. Printwear & Promotion has always been another QUICKPRINTPRO.CO.UK

highlight on our events calendar, and we’re delighted to see the shows taking place simultaneously—something we have been championing for many years.” He adds, “We’ve observed an overlap between some suppliers and customers, but many are yet to discover the other side of the print world and what this could potentially mean for their business. By merging the events, there is a good chance it will inspire many people to explore what else they could do with the equipment they have or are looking to invest in. Roland DG is taking two stands, each featuring a different set of products. This approach allows us to showcase a broader range of our machines while tailoring the benefits of each to a more specific audience.” Phil McMullin, Head of Sales, Commercial & Industrial, at Epson UK, says, “Epson is focused on signage AND textile so for us, the merger of the two shows is perfect. Historically we have worked with our value add partner, Xpres, at P&P Live! and we will continue with this arrangement for the 2024 show. This means that for sign and graphics, visitors can come to Epson at SDUK and for the latest and greatest Epson textile printing solutions, they can visit Xpres at P&P Live!” Tony Gardner, Event Director for both exhibitions concludes, “There is so much to look forward to at the shows in February. It is fantastic that such leading names in the industry are investing the time and effort to have stands in each show, helping visitors better understand the opportunities there are to increase their revenue and profitability in each market.” Registration for either show allows visitors entry into both events. Fedrigoni UK Annual Fedrigoni Calendar Fedrigoni UK, the producer of luxury speciality papers and self-adhesive labelling products, has partnered with design studio TM and printer F.E. Burman, using the latest HP Indigo digital print technology to produce Fedrigoni 366 2024. Since its initial launch in 2017, Fedrigoni has collaborated with design studio TM (TsevdosMcNeil) to unite creatives across the UK for the annual publication. This year’s partnership with printer F.E. Burman uses the latest HP Indigo digital print technology. The technology has allowed 731 creatives to harness the power of generative design —meaning every single design submitted to the project looks different in each book. Every year Fedrigoni invites the UK creative community to contribute a design that interprets a date of the year given to them at random. This year, a hand selected group of international designers have also been invited to participate, broadening the project’s reach even further. Danny McNeil Creative Director, at TM says: “There is something really special about the link

between all the designs this year. The restrictions around colour mean that there is a consistent visual thread that runs through all entries.” Beyond this, a generative code has been used to randomly shuffle colours in every other part of the

book — from the outer jacket to the inner divider pages, no colours are the same from one book to another. These designs are printed on a range of specially treated white papers from Fedrigoni’s Digital for HP Indigo printing collection.

Ade Onabanjo, Director, F.E. Burman, comments: “F.E. Burman are delighted to have been involved in this boundary breaking production. The complexity of handling over two million files speaks for itself, but more broadly it demonstrates the ability of the industry, to harness both design skills and the latest algorithmic software, collaboratively to produce innovative, imaginative products.” On the printing technology and partnership, Andy Pike, EMEA Marketing Manager, HP Industrial, says: “This project always seeks to push the boundaries of what is possible in print. This year’s calendar has done that and more. Combining HP’s SmartSteam designer software and our HP 4Indigo Digital Printing technology every page of every calendar is completely unique — over two million unique pages.” A limited number of editions of Fedrigoni 366 can be purchased from Counter Print. Profits from sales this year will be donated to Save The Children. www.fedrigoni.com

PTE STAND OF THE MONTH — DRYTAC

Top Expo rights this month go to Amanda Lowe and Kieran Blacknall who were on standby to give best advice on ‘inside facing outwards graphics.’ The trick is to print the image in reverse, then the back with white film or ink. Choosing the best media for the job secures your print customers and attracts new ones. Kieran suggests that it is best to filter the products down by how long the graphic needs to be in place for, how easily it needs to come down, and the experience level of the installer. So Polar Premium for permanent and SpotOn for temporary. The show visitor feedback adds up to Amanda and Kieran being awarded the print industry exhibitor of the month accolade. Mimaki to empower printers at Salon C!Print Mimaki France, a provider of industrial inkjet printers, cutting plotters, and 3D printers, has announced its participation at Salon C!Print from 6th to 8th February 2024. As the print industry converges in Lyon, Mimaki aims its sights on demonstrating how its cutting edge, top quality and cost efficient solutions can empower printers to ‘change the game’ — whether that’s exploring new markets and opportunities or elevating existing application offerings. With the show’s 2024 tagline calling on attendees to ‘change the game’ in the year of the Olympic Games in Paris, the Salon C!Print show is a hub for innovation. Mimaki is poised to use this platform to showcase its state of the art technologies, from vibrant signage to textile printing, with tools to help printers boost their production workflow and raise the bar in their business. Mimaki, a gold sponsor for the event, will show how both its software and hardware solutions can help printers discover new markets. Mimaki will spotlight UV printing technology on its stand, with both the UJV100-160Plus and the UCJV330-160 making their debut at a French show. As the latest entry into the 100 series, the UJV100-160 Plus allows for higher efficiency at a lower power consumption, while the new UCJV330-160 is a versatile roll to roll integrated printer designed to significantly improve productivity for quality sign graphics applications. Both printers will be displayed at Mimaki’s stand alongside the CJV330-160, CG-130AR, UJF-6042MkII e and the JFX600-

2513. Another printer making its French show debut will be the Tiger600-1800TS, which will be located at Mimaki dealer Mautom’s stand, meanwhile a TxF150-75 will be in action at the Plug&Play area, where visitors can see it personalising fabric bags. For software, the company’s latest inksaving function (part of the RIP Rasterlink) supports printers in reducing production costs by optimising ink consumption, without compromising on print quality. Freely available across all Mimaki printers, this solution replaces a percentage of cyan, yellow and magenta inks with black, reducing the quantity of ink needed. Responding to the market need for more cost effective solutions, adopting this function can offer savings of up to 50%, depending on the application. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to reconnect with Mimaki and the wider industry. To register for free entry to Salon C!Print use Mimaki invitation code E-MIMACPL24. www.mimaki.fr

Antalis joins SAISAG

Antalis recently announced its role as one of the founding members of the Self-Adhesive Industry Sustainability Action Group (SAISAG). Here, Antalis’ Director of Visual Communications, Chris Green, talks about the work Antalis has been doing to improve access to sustainable products, and why he sees collaboration across the industry as vital in finding solutions to some of the more complex sustainability issues. As a leading supplier of visual communication products across the UK and Europe, Antalis has an on-going programme of activity to improve the sustainability of its products and its business operations. In 2021 it launched its Manifesto for Sustainable Visual Communications, formalising and bringing together into a single framework the many

aspects of its drive for greater sustainability, including responsible sourcing, helping customers identify eco-friendly products through its Green Star System, and a team of sustainability specialists to offer advice on product selection. According to Chris, sourcing new products with good sustainability credentials is becoming relatively easy — Antalis has been growing its range of polypropylene and fibrous products over recent years — the bigger challenge lies in understanding exactly what we all mean by sustainability: “There is a lot of misinformation out there, much of which can be attributed to differing interpretations of what sustainability actually means. One of the first things we’re looking to do at SAISAG is to clear up the confusion and create a definition that will help us to focus on what needs to be done.” To date, consumer demand has been behind much of the drive for change, but it’s likely that change will be driven by legislation, too. The Plastic Packaging Tax was introduced in 2022 and Chris suspects it’s only a matter of

time before it’s extended to cover plastics more widely. ‘Dispelling myths, embracing learning and accepting imperfection’ was the title of Chris’ talk at the recent Ecoprint Virtual Summit at which Antalis was a headline partner: “The Ecoprint Virtual Summit was a great example of how we can bring individuals and businesses of all sizes together to discuss sustainability. I personally had lots of very positive conversations and it feels like there is a real impetus now to bring about change.” Chris concludes: “Sustainability and the need for change is bigger than any of us can handle individually, and that’s why it’s so important to come together as an industry so we can tackle these challenges more cohesively and therefore more effectively. In addition to SAISAG, at Antalis we’re also working with other bodies, including POPAI, IPIA and FESPA, to improve sustainability across all areas of the industry. It’s all about communication and collaboration and to make it successful we need everyone working in this industry, at whatever level, to be involved.” www.antalis.co.uk

Epson transitions to 100% renewable electricity As of December 2023, all electricity used at Epson Group sites around the globe(1) is from renewable sources. This makes Epson the first(2) in the domestic manufacturing industry to complete the transition to renewable electricity at all of its sites worldwide, including Japan. The Epson Group consumes approximately 876 GWh(3) of electricity per year. By sourcing renewables to cover this demand, Epson expects to reduce its annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 400,000 tonnes. Epson publicly committed to becoming carbon negative and underground resource(4) free in its Environmental Vision 2050. The use of renewable electricity is a key means by which Epson seeks to reach its goal of achieving decarbonisation. In line with this, Epson declared, in March 2021, that it would switch to 100% renewable electricity to meet the electricity needs at all Epson Group sites(1) around the world by 2023. In November 2021, the switch was completed in Japan. The global switch to renewable electricity was completed on schedule in December 2023. In addition to sourcing renewable electricity, Epson will promote the broader adoption of renewable energy, including by generating more of its own power and by supporting the development of new power sources through co-creation(5) . Epson will reduce the amount 26 | FEBRUARY 2024

Now we have successfully completed the switch to 100% renewable electricity at all Epson Group sites in just two years and ten months since declaring our commitment to doing so in 2021. This will not only help us to achieve our own goals but will also help to facilitate a broader adoption of renewable electricity within society by spreading awareness. Filtrona Tapes’ Prism Range to light up packaging Tear tape solutions provider Filtrona Tapes will aim to shed new light on flexible packaging and prove why Supastrip Prism is the answer when it lands at the UK’s flagship packaging exhibition next month. With just under six weeks to go until event organisers Easyfairs declare the 2024 edition of Packaging Innovations & Empack open for business, Filtrona Tapes has confirmed it will return as one of over 400 exhibitors due to appear at the NEC in Birmingham on 21 & 22 February. Having recently reintroduced Supastrip Prism to the market to assist brands and their packaging suppliers in delivering on pack impact and security for a new age, this must see product is designed to tear through various flexible packaging types, providing quick and easy access. Much like its Supastrip and Supastrip PCR counterparts, Prism can be applied to a range of products that use plastic or paper as the primary packaging across a wide range of FMCG applications, from pet food to personal care or food to go to frozen categories. “The value of being versatile keeps businesses thriving in a world of constant change,” said Market Development Manager Sarah Rutland. “And in the regular discussions we have with our customers, the ability to add striking design features through holography, adding to the ability of brands to stand out, while maintaining all of the easy opening benefits of Supastrip, has had a compound effect, where its value and versatility is difficult to ignore. “It’s fantastic to be back at Packaging

Innovations again! With over 7,000 visitors expected at the two day event, brand protection on the speaking agenda and dozens of top brands on the lookout for clever and seamless ways of enhancing their packaging, we have little doubt that the Prism range will turn heads and prove itself a popular choice.” Already home to the likes of Rippatape, Supastrip, RE: CLOSE and VakTape, and a host of other leading tape products that enhance a package’s opening, closing, informational and protective credentials, Filtrona Tapes believes its tape application systems make them a smart choice for busy procurement teams. “We want to make it easy for you to enhance your packaging with tape,” added Rutland. “It really is as simple as that! Whether integrating tape to solutions like shrink sleeves, overwrap, flow-wraps, and many more flexible film applications, our easy to use applicators enable new or existing lines to apply tape efficiently. Our dedicated in-house team of applicator engineers are on hand to help with everything from supporting application selection to installation and aftercare. “Whether it’s safe opening, multiple re-sealing for longer use, high quality printed messages, or the protection of products, by visiting stand B80, you will learn more about the unique set of benefits associated with each.” Filtrona Tapes’ team of experts will be on hand across the two day event, and those interested in organising a one to one discussion should get in touch today. www.filtrona.com

HP Latex 2700W opens doors to new customers South Wales headquartered diversified printing business DecTek has openly praised the impact its HP Latex 2700W printer has had on the business, revealing that the machine’s ability to produce a wide range of output has helped them to attract new customers. Operating for almost 20 years, DecTek offers a host of printing services, specialising in domed resin labels and domed name badges. Working with a number of leading brands such as Google, eBay, ITV, the BBC and Subway, DecTek is committed to delivering a high quality service that meets the rightly demanding standards of its major clients. This ultimately led DecTek to invest in a new HP Latex 2700W, which was installed by approved HP partner Papergraphics in December 2022. DecTek Director Mike Beese explained that in addition to delivering high quality printed work on a range of materials, the printer offers a more sustainable option that makes its services even more attractive to like-minded customers.

As HP Latex inks are water based, this makes them much more environmentally friendly than other ink types such as solvent, eco-solvent and UV, benefitting both the print company and its clients seeking more sustainable print services. “HP Latex technology is very much focused on sustainability and environmentally friendly inks,” Mike said. “The machine prints on an industrial scale to the highest print quality standards. The operating software is also very simplistic and informative, allowing the operator to control quality and effective workflow. “We were also very keen on the white ink feature, with this being a key factor in our decision to buy the HP Latex 2700W model.

We are able to print full colour onto dark materials, while the circulating white ink means there is no waste during cleaning cycles.” Such has been the impact of the installation that Mike said DecTek has won work from a number of new trade partners as a direct result of the purchase. This, he said, was possible due to the new product ranges that it can print on the HP Latex 2700W. Mike picked out the interior décor market and applications such as wallpaper and textile products, while he also revealed that DecTek has been able to grow its already extensive banners and signage portfolio on the back of the HP Latex 2700W investment. “We are able to support high volume requirements with

both consistent quality and speed of manufacture,” Mike said. “The additional 3.2m wide print capability has allowed us to support wide format print requirements that were previously unachievable. The dual roll system has also assisted DecTek in producing high volume labels in record production times.” Mike added that DecTek is now looking towards its next investment from HP, picking out the HP Latex R2000 printer as its next target. “We are delighted with our investment and are very impressed with the environmentally friendly inks sets that support the industry’s shift towards more sustainable products.” www.hp.com

New 17-inch Epson photo and fine art printer A new 17-inch photo and fine art production printer, designed to meet the needs of professional photographers looking to increase productivity without compromising on quality, has been announced by Epson. Combining the advanced technology of the Epson SC-P700/P900 with the recognised flexibility and production capability of the Epson SC-P5000, the introduction of the SC-P5300 will further consolidate the company’s leading position in the 17 inch professional photo and fine-art printing market. Designed to meet the requirements of professional photographers, fine art users, design agencies and print shops, the SC-P5300 offers exceptional image quality thanks to the consistency and accuracy of Epson’s Micro Piezo printhead technology, coupled with an 30 | FEBRUARY 2024

optimised colour gamut and UltraChrome Pro10 ink with violet as standard. The printer also offers black enhanced overcoat (BEO) and a carbon black mode for delivering the very highest black density, as well as improved contrast, better tonality and reduced bronzing in dark areas on glossy media. The SC-P5300 also delivers enhanced usability and functionality through a range of advanced features. The printer offers four ways of loading different media, including a production paper cassette, an integrated roll unit, automatic cutting system and a dedicated MK/PK channel for use with different media surfaces to save time and ink. The SC-P5300 is fully Wi-Fi enabled, allowing unrestricted printer installation anywhere, and Wi-Fi direct print, while configuration and operation

are managed via an intuitive 4.3inch colour LCD touchscreen which was successfully introduced with the SC-P7/9500. The Epson Cloud Solution PORT(ECSP), along with all of Epson’s latest software, is also supported to improve printer fleet management, productivity, and control. “The productivity demands of today’s professional fine art

environment are higher than ever while users naturally still want the very highest levels of image quality,” said Boris Creischer, Product Manager C&I, Epson Europe. “This latest offering from Epson satisfies both of these requirements, together with outstanding ease-of-use and exceptional reliability.” www.epson.com QUICKPRINTPRO.CO.UK

Readers’ Scribes

Something to share? HEIGHTISM I was out with my young daughter and ran into a friend I’d not seen in years. “This is Beth,” I said, introducing my kid. “And what’s Beth short for?” he asked. “Because she’s only three,” I answered.

SPECIAL PRINT ORDER A man goes into a print shop and says, “I would like ten copies of my CV please.” “No problem,” comes the reply from behind the counter. “But I want it my way,” says the man. “What do you mean ‘your way’?” asks the print shop assistant. The man says, “Well, I want the Powerpoint document to run into a different number of pages than my original. To choose its own typeface and size. Can the columns all get shaken up and add some different colours in the text and background. “I don’t have the time to do all that!” replies the print shop assistant. “Well, you did yesterday!” replied the customer.

TWO SALESMAN SKIVING Sid and Barry head out for a quick round of golf. Since they are short on time, they decide to play only nine holes. Sid offers Barry, “Let’s say we make the time worth the while, at least for one of us, and spot £5 on the lowest score for the day.” Barry agrees and they enjoy a great game. After the 8th hole, Barry is ahead by one stroke, but cuts his ball into the rough on the 9th. “Help me find my ball, you look over there,” he says to Sid. After five minutes, neither has had any luck, and since a lost ball carries a four-point penalty, Barry pulls a ball from his pocket and tosses it to the ground. “I’ve found my ball!” he announces triumphantly.

The dog keeps woofing down my food.

Sid looks at him forlornly, “After all the years we’ve been friends, you’d cheat me on golf for a measly five quid?!?” “What do you mean cheat? I found my ball sitting right here!” “And a liar, too!” Sid says with amazement. “I’ve been standing on your golf ball for the last five minutes!”

BRAVE WIFE A husband and wife entered a dentist’s office. The wife said, “I want a tooth pulled. I don’t want gas or novocaine because I am in a terrible hurry. Just pull the tooth as quickly as possible.” “You are a brave woman,” said the dentist. “Now, show me which tooth it is.” The wife turns to her husband and says, “Open your mouth and show the dentist which tooth it is, dear.”

COVERING THE BIRD We visited our newly-married daughter, who was preparing her first Christmas dinner. I noticed the turkey thawing in the kitchen sink with a dish drainer inverted over the bird. I asked why a drainer covered the turkey. Our daughter turned to my wife and said, “Mum, you always did it that way.” “Yes,” my wife replied, “but you don’t have a cat!”

IT’S NOT FOR EVERYONE What is tact? Tact is for people who aren’t witty enough to be sarcastic.

REVIVED 45 A man spots a sign outside a house that reads, “Talking Dog for Sale.” Intrigued, he walks in. “So what have you done with your life?” he asks the dog. “I’ve led a very full life,” says the dog. “I lived in the Alps rescuing avalanche victims. Then I served my country in Iraq. And now I spend my days reading to the residents of a retirement home.” The man is flabbergasted. He asks the dog’s owner, “Why on earth would you want to get rid of an incredible dog like that?” The owner says, “Because he’s a liar! He never did any of that!”

THE WORLD’S MOST-USED LIES (CLEAN VERSION) Having a great time. Wish you were here! It’s a good thing you came in today. It’s the last one we have. You made it yourself? I would have never guessed.

So we put her on a vegan diet.

Go ahead and tell me, I won’t tell another soul. It’s delicious but I can’t eat another bite. The doctor will call you right back. You don’t look a day over 50. Your baby is just beautiful. Put the map away. I know where we are.

OUT OUT I love going outdoors. It’s so much easier than going out windows.

NICE SHOES People who say I’m pretentious need to walk a mile in my Louis Vuitton’s.

RIGHT NEIGHBOURLY My neighbour, she’s single, shapely, beautiful, and she lives right across the road. I watched her as she got home from work this evening. I was surprised when she walked across the road, up my driveway and knocked on my door. I opened the door, she looked at me and spoke. “I just got home, and I have this strong urge to have a good time, get drunk, and have fun tonight. Are you doing anything?” I quickly replied, “No, absolutely I’m free!” “Great” she said.” Can you look after my dog?”

She is doing really well.

She’s eaten two so far.
