STARTING GRID

Editor scribes By the time Motorcycle Live at the NEC has finished, the New Year is almost upon us and the Christmas break is a great time to plan your 2016 motorcycling year. It’s easy these days to fill your weekends and holidays with motorbike related activities. With the widespread usage of social media and, of course, publications such as SEB, it’s easier than ever to spread the word. For those die hard winter bikers there are plenty of trials and enduro events to watch or participate in. More and more road riders are being converted to the joys of slopping about in the wet stuff. You don’t have to hang up your bike kit when the clocks go back! Off road riding is generally reasonably affordable and becoming more appealing to those fed up with speed cameras and ridiculous speed restrictions. Despite the increasing popularity of the adventure bike, the sports bike market has been holding up well with some incredible machinery currently on offer. The Japanese big four in particular seemed to have upped their game with some of the models selling out their UK allocations. Whether you are interested in motorbike racing or not, there’s no denying that Barry Sheene inspired a generation of bikers, many of us still riding today. With young Danny Kent becoming the first British motorcycle champion in the premier class since the great Barry, the future for biking looks rosy. Unfortunately the general media coverage of motorcycle sport is dire, so hopefully Danny and the other emerging young riders can raise motorcycling’s profile and get more of the next generation on two wheels.

REVIEW

SPORTS BIKE SHOWDOWN The showdown was between the Dark Destroyer, the Triumph Daytona 675R looking impressive with its matt black paint and red gloss touches on the frame, and the MotoGP replica Suzuki GSX-R600. Debbie Tunstill tried them both to see which one was the best.

T

riumph has dominated the British Supersport this year so it was time for me try it out. With the Daytona 675R, Triumph have made an exceptional sports bike but also a great road bike. Taking the experience they gained on track and road and combining the latest developments in engineering technology it’s now an even faster, better handling and easier riding bike. The result is a bike which is 1kg lighter than the old model with a new triple motor that delivers even more power. The new frame and race-derived Öhlins suspension gives it sharp handling and with Brembo brakes, a quickshifter and carbon trim, the bike does turn heads. 4

REVIEW

The moment it starts it sounds great. Unfortunately the frame is still a little too tall for me and a little bit of gravel caught me out so over I went. I never felt totally comfortable on the bike at slow speed after this, but once it was going it was really responsive, open the throttle and the bike is off. The handling in traffic is good as the bike is light and manoeuvrable. The flawless injection helps the Daytona to get off the mark quickly and nipping in and out of traffic is no problem. There is much more to this bike, but would it be my choice? The Suzuki GSX-R 600 MotoGP replica To celebrate Suzuki’s return to MotoGP in 2015, they launched the GSX-R MotoGP replica. The 600, 750 and 1000 have all had the special MotoGP touch. The added features are a genuine double bubble clear screen, Yoshimura R11 silencer with black body and carbon tip. Also included are a number of Works edition finish anodised parts from Yoshimura such as timing plug, oil filler plug, case savers, bar end weights, top yoke nut and rear stand bobbins I was surprised as I sat on the bike that I felt more planted and both my feet could touch the floor South East Biker Magazine • www.southeastbiker.co.uk

comfortably. Riding the GSX-R600, I realised how much shorter it is in length to other bikes. Not only that, the reach is less than on other sports bikes. It feels a lot more stable driving out of corners and it is so quick to respond to the throttle that it feels like it is reading my mind. The Brembo brakes, slipper clutch and two different riding modes give the Suzuki a great feel for the road and overall riding experience. The steering damper helps to make changing direction a breeze and moving the bike around, without the engine on, is easy too. 5

REVIEW tidy really makes the bike look so much better, it gives it a sleeker look and shortens the bike’s length too.

I loved it so much I bought one, thanks to Haslemere Motorcycles help I managed to ride away with my perfect bike. The MotoGP rep GSX-R range has been so popular dealers had sold out in a matter of a couple of months. Hopefully, Suzuki will be supplying more bikes in the new year but nothing has been confirmed as yet. I think the popularity took Suzuki by surprise. This has to be the best looking Suzuki who are bringing out more great new designs on their bikes. I had my bike on display at Brightona, on the SEB stand and it really did attract a lot of admirers, many saying they are pleased that Suzuki are moving in the right direction and thinking about what most sportsbike riders want. THE CHANGES I MADE R & G Racing Products is a company based in Alton, Hampshire and they know about protecting bikes. They supply protection products to many racing teams and they can improve the look of your bike too. I had their classic style crash protectors on my SV 650S when I dropped it on a track day; they saved me a fortune as they protected my fairings and paint work. It is important to me to have my new Suzuki protected and I didn’t think twice about getting them from R & G Racing as they had proved their worth to me already. Most of their items are, so I am told by Mark at Haslemere Motorcycles, easy to fit but I have never tried to be honest! R&G TAIL TIDY, £39.99 It seems most manufacturers are adding more and more unnecessary plastic to new bikes. The R&G tail

R&G CRASH PROTECTORS – AERO STYLE, £56.66 These are a necessity for me, the last pair that I had on my SV helped to save me hundreds of pounds of damage. Considering their price it is a small amount to pay for the peace of mind. Just the paint job alone would be a fortune on this bike, let alone buying a new fairing. R&G COTTON REELS, £16.60 These Cotton Reels are mounted to the paddock stand mounting points on the swing arm. Check out their website for more ideas www.rg-racing.com PERFORMANCE PARTS Performance Parts Ltd are the UK’s leading high performance motorcycle component wholesale distribution company. They supply parts by mail order and through their network of UK dealers. VARIOBARS: ADJUSTABLE HANDLE BARS INCLUDING RISER EXTENSIONS, £330 +VAT. These are so important to me, due to my bad back, they give me a little more room to move about. They raise the bars by 85mm which I am told is a lot by my husband Nick! Most people that saw the bike at Brightona did not notice these had been added so they are well worth the money. www.performanceparts-ltd.com.

50K MILE ADVENTURE

2moroRider

The average age of today’s motorcyclist is increasing year on year so it’s vital for the future of biking to encourage new riders. Hopefully youngsters like Rhys will inspire the next generation…

2

moroRider, Rhys Lawrey, completed an epic journey across the globe on Friday 17th July this year. Covering 56,854 miles, 71 countries and six continents, he brings home not one but two world records. The successful completion of Rhys’ trip, which he made on a Triumph Tiger 800XC, sees him become both the youngest person to circumnavigate the world on a motorbike and the world record holder for the most consecutive capital cities visited on a motorcycle. The monumental trip culminated at the Houses of Parliament, where he was greeted by Lord Digby Jones, chairman of Triumph Motorcycles, Councillor Susie Burbridge, Deputy Lord Mayor of Westminster, and Taylor Jenkins, a Young Ambassador from The Prince’s Trust, his nominated charity. Starting his journey aged just 22 in May 2014, Rhys has since travelled some of the best and worst roads in the world, tackling extreme temperatures, treacherous terrain and gruelling weather conditions. His trip saw him travel through deserts, mountains and jungle, no mean feat, South East Biker Magazine • www.southeastbiker.co.uk

even on his trusty Tiger 800, aptly named ‘Tigger’. The journey also saw him celebrate two birthdays, turning 23 in China and 24 in Amsterdam. On his achievements, Rhys commented: “For me, this trip was about inspiring other young people. I wanted to show that it is possible to follow your heart and do something beyond what is expected of us in western society today. Also that if you want something enough and are willing to put in the effort, then even the most daunting of challenges is achievable.” “I’m extremely proud of what I have achieved over the last 14 months. I couldn’t have done it without the support of sponsors, such as Triumph. I’m grateful I had such an amazing opportunity and I hope that this trip will inspire others into considering motorcycling as a way to explore the world. “I haven’t had any problems with Tigger and she hasn’t missed a beat in over 56,400 miles – I’m 15

50K MILE ADVENTURE looking forward to planning our next adventure together.” Rick Cawley, general manager for Triumph UK and Ireland, commented: “At Triumph, we’re committed to encouraging more young people into the world of motorcycling, whether that be through riding our product or by developing the engineering and manufacturing talent of the future through our extensive apprenticeship and graduate schemes. What Rhys has achieved is nothing short of incredible and we’re extremely pleased to have been part of his success story.” Rhys adds; “There has not only been the help of sponsors, but the hundreds of local people around the world, in all different countries, who gave a helping hand. Whether it be giving me and Tigger a safe place to sleep, food in my mouth, guiding me through the big cities or paying for a tank of fuel. None of this could have been possible without my sponsors and without the help of all the people who I have met along the way.” Youth charity, The Prince’s Trust, helps disadvantaged young people to get their lives on track. Many of the young people helped by The Prince’s Trust are in or leaving care, facing issues such as homelessness or mental health problems, or they have been in trouble with the law. Three in four young

people supported by The Prince’s Trust move into work, education or training. “Their goal is to inspire young lives, which fits perfectly with what I’m trying to do,” says Rhys. “So I’m asking people to support my ride by donating just £1 for every continent I cross. The most you’ll have to pay is £6, which most people, even young people on low wages, should be able to afford.” Rhys brought his bike along to the Jack Lilley Open Day in April 2014 just before he set off on his trip. They agreed to follow his progress and share his updates on their social media pages and website etc. On his return he suggested they host a ‘finish line’ event at their Ashford showroom which took place on 18th July this year. To find out more about Rhys’ journey or to donate to The Prince’s Trust, visit www.2mororider.com.

DEALER FOCUS

Jack Lilley Since 1959 Jack Lilley has been in the motorcycle business and a dealer for the Triumph brand since 1991. Their organisation has a legacy of expertise with involvement in European motorcycle racing and have leveraged that experience to provide a superior experience for the motorcycling public.

T

riumph dealer Jack Lilley Ltd is a familyrun business initially specialising in the lightweight end of the market. The company branched out into scooters in the early sixties, even offering a custom paintwork service for the Vespas and Lambrettas popular at the time. In the late 60’s, the company became Honda agents after being impressed with the quality of their step-thru models which proved to be very strong sellers. Throughout the 1970s, Jack Lilley Ltd became agents for CZ /Jawa and Yamaha – the FS1E proving a spectacularly successful model – and also sold CZ motocross machines, even running their own JL Motocross team. It was around this time that JL started producing a few special custom machines, a tradition which continues to the present day. Early projects included a Suzuki TS250 sidecar outfit. When the Triumph brand relaunched in 1991, JL were one of the first dealers to be appointed and they have stayed faithful to the brand ever since and are a sole franchise dealership focusing purely on Triumph. The original showroom was in Shepperton High Street which became a popular destination for bikers across the region until relocating to larger premises in nearby Ashford in 2003. In 2006, JL supported Paul Young with a Triumph Daytona 675 in British Supersport and have been South East Biker Magazine • www.southeastbiker.co.uk

involved in racing sponsorship ever since, recently sponsoring Sam Cox Racing and Anvil Hire TAG Racing. In 2013, JL established a second branch in Romford, Essex. Ken Kirby, one of the salesman at the Romford branch, has won Triumph’s ‘Salesman of the Year’ award twice. CUSTOM BIKES Over the years, the company has produced dozens of one-off custom specials and of course the Triumph Bonneville and Scrambler make the perfect starting point, particularly with the current trend for cafe racers, bobbers and other custom bikes. There are a vast number of parts and accessories available for these bikes, which means JL can help riders create their dream bike tailored to their exact specification. The new Bonneville range which was recently announced will provide further inspiration for riders wishing to personalise their Triumph and create something unique. SERVICING, PARTS, ACCESSORIES & CLOTHING As well as new and used bike sales, Jack Lilley Ltd also offer a wide range of parts, accessories and clothing as well as servicing, restorations and custom builds. Last year they won Triumph’s Service Dealer of the Year and Accessories Dealer of the Year awards. There is also a bustling mail order department where Triumph parts, accessories and clothing are despatched to customers all round the world. DEMONSTRATOR FLEET Jack Lilley Ltd always have a wide range of Triumph demonstrators available at both branches, including the recently introduced Low versions of the popular Tiger 800 range. RIDER REVIEW

DUCATI 899 PANIGALE V. MAN As we have mentioned before in SEB, renting a motorbike for a weekend gives you a chance to ride the bike of your dreams and gives you a far better chance of making a proper assessment than a short test ride. Andrew Daines returns to biking and throws himself in at the deep end…

I

mpending middle age seems to have been stifling a burning desire to ride fast motorbikes once again. Since an unfortunate face to face with a garage door on a 50cc Italjet at the age of four, the biking bug has been steadily bubbling inside. Brief flirtations with everything from tall trailies to courier proven four-pots have invariably ended with a trip to the local infirmary. As a result, seven years ago I hung up my gloves and consigned my time and money to fatherhood. What at first seemed like a long dark tunnel, is now slowly giving me back some precious play time. What better way to spend a couple of early autumnal days than piloting the Ducati 899 Panigale, courtesy of the nice chaps at RoadTrip in Woking? 20

Any fears of riding such a potent beast were only made worse by a) my severe lack of any recent road miles and b) the pre-departure banter of it being a wolf in wolf’s clothing. As we gingerly crept out of the warm bosom of a Woking industrial estate, the Portsmouth-bound A3 in Friday rush-hour dropped me well and truly in at the deep end. To be honest it wasn’t the romantic ideal of fast A-road riding in to the sunset that I had in mind, but at this point it was more a case of remembering which lever did what. The Panigale, although more docile and user-friendly than I had been warned , was already showing signs that if I wanted to be naughty, it would be more than happy to oblige. I wasn’t alone on this adventure – my old friend Jimmy White was along for the ride on a Triumph Daytona 675R. Another of RoadTrip’s stable, we were able to chop and change between the Italian/German twin and the British triple as we wished, giving us a good comparison of these vastly different machines. After an overnight in Chichester, the plan was to

head West along the Dorset coast and try and make North Devon by nightfall. Portsmouth, Southampton and Bournemouth became mere checkpoints in our quest to hit the twisties of the Jurassic Coast. In particular the B3157 from Weymouth to Bridport. Having driven this stretch of road many times before, I’d always dreamed of replacing the family estate with something more sporty and less-wheeled. And here we were. Tanks were brimmed and as we climbed out of town, the anticipation of de-restricted coast roads were almost too much to bear. The dream was slightly shattered by the plethora of 50mph zones and one too many weekend drivers , but on the whole, comparisons with the Pacific Coast Highway wouldn’t be amiss. Sat astride the red Ducati, I couldn’t help but think this bike was in its element. It felt thoroughly planted and grippy (helped by the Diablo Rosso

22

rubber), with useable grunt from its sweet motor. As a less than seasoned biker, the Triumph in comparison seemed a much more user-friendly and back to basics kind of ride. By no means less of a machine, just different and more crutch-friendly. The Duke can stop on a six-pence and and get seriously hot in traffic. The cliffs of Burton Bradstock beckoned us in for a substantial sea-view lunch of Fish Tempura (battered cod where I come from), and with heavy stomachs we made our way towards the hills of Exmoor. The A35 would lead us out to Honiton and from there Tiverton was the last fuel stop before heading north to pick up the A396 in to the moorland. The first few miles of this National Park follow the River Exe and are sublime if you’re lucky enough to have the road to yourself. Aside from a crazed pheasant and a maniac in an old Citroen van we did, and so could enjoy the low autumnal sun guiding us through the tree lined byways. Credit to our two machines – they did a brilliant job of hiding our riding flaws, and gave us the confidence we needed to tackle what would become the highlight of the trip – the A39 from Minehead to Lynmouth. This 17-mile stretch of road has it all. From flowing A-road, extreme hair-pin bends to glorious open moorland stretches, we couldn’t have wished for any more. A breather-stop was needed just before we descended down in to Lynmouth, and provided

RIDER REVIEW the perfect Kodak moment of man and machine out in the wild. Sorting accommodation on the fly proved more difficult than expected but eventually we stumbled on The Blue Ball, and thankfully there was room at the Inn. This 13thC. clifftop coach-house is full of character and a surprising number of basic rooms, but suited us weary travellers down to the ground. Its location up on the moor away from Lynmouth meant it was more popular with Gore-tex clad weekenders than the hardy breed of locals, but it served us and our appetites well. We left the next morning to crisp and beautiful sunshine and as the bikes were almost running on vapour, a short blast back down the cliff road to Mr. Elf quickly awakened the senses. Taking the A39 in reverse and having swapped on to the Daytona, the trip back over the moor confirmed what a great place this is to ride a motorbike . Our journey back east took us through the natural splendour of Cheddar Gorge; here the advice is to go early to avoid the crowds, but we were lucky in that our fourwheeled friends were at the mercy of the countless open-topped bus tours meandering along the route. Once past we could enjoy the twisting road, and the

majestic exhaust notes ringing up the sheer gorge walls. This experience is short but certainly sweet. From here we gradually made our way homewards through Bath, Chippenham and Marlborough. At the mercy of TomTom we were unfortunate enough to find ourselves on the M4 late on a Sunday afternoon. By now my lack of saddle-time was starting to show through and aboard the Duke, my groin was beginning to buckle under the heat and pressure. Thoughts of being cocooned in a Chrysler began flashing through my mind, but a few miles later a switch to the Triumph brought me to my senses. The short hop back to base confirmed the different nature of these two bikes; you could jump on the Daytona and ride all day long. It’s apparent lack of electrickery, gives it an almost utilitarian feel. It will do whatever you ask of it, and at great speed if necessary. In comparison, there’s just that extra something with the Duke. Better design, superior aesthetics, and a more intoxicating ride make it the stand-out winner. Don’t get me wrong, this machine will make you work for your money, but at £300 for a weekend, it’s worth every penny.

‘THE POISONER’

A RACE, ANYONE? This latest adventure in Terry ‘The Poisoner’s’ ever expanding biking career took a little while to come to fruition. Something that probably most riders dream about but not so many actually get around to doing. It was definitely on his riding wish list, perhaps even a bucket list thing…

T

he whole thing started during a Christmas get together with my trackday riding compatriots, Ray and Matt. Although Matt had the least amount of trackday experience, with only a year’s worth under his belt, he’s one of those annoyingly gifted riders who are quick straight out of the box. If I’m honest, he’s as fast as Ray and definitely faster than me, so when the idea popped up, “Why don’t we do a proper race?” no one laughed. Ray had raced before for two seasons with North Gloucester Road Race Club so you’d think his wife wouldn’t object to the proposal. That is until you know his last race in 2013 ended with a pelvis breaking crash! Matt, young and indestructible had no problem getting his girlfriend Charlie to agree. She even offered to ‘man’ the pit board. My wife’s rather stern attitude was “You’re over fifty now, you don’t bounce as good as you used to!” What finally persuaded them was when we agreed not to do the regular ‘sprint’ races, with a huge grid of

South East Biker Magazine • www.southeastbiker.co.uk

psycho-nutter death-or-glory racers all trying to get to the first corner at the same time after the lights go out. We opted for the 3 hour endurance race, each of us alternately taking to the track every 20 minutes or so. 25

‘THE POISONER’ “It’s just a glorified trackday. No mad start and we can go at our own pace.” We three thought it best not to mention the psycho-nutter death-or-glory Le Mans start to the ladies at the time. So, objections out of the way, the next step was getting race licences. This wasn’t a problem for Ray. Although not having raced for two years he simply had to pay up and renew his. For Matt and myself, it meant booking onto a club run day course to qualify. Handily, NG Road Racing Club ran courses at Castle Combe, virtually midway between my house and Matt’s. £110 later it was arranged, day off work booked and I was looking forward to a bike run up to the edge of the Cotswolds. The course involved a morning in the classroom with a twenty question quiz at the end then a few laps of increasing speed around the circuit to check one was competent. Then a couple of practice starts followed by a second briefing and certificates and membership cards handed out. The mid March day itself was dry but VERY windy. Guys had turned up on everything from road going litre bikes to super lightweight 125 racers. Seeing tiny 125’s actually being blown sideways across the tarmac by great gusts of wind was amusing for the onlookers but a bit terrifying for the unlucky rider. Still, no one actually fell off. Job done, the licence was in the post and, to be fair, the fee also included a year’s membership to NG Road Racing Club. We then thought a little bit of coaching would be a good thing so we next spent a day at Mallory Park with the James Whitham race school. The day was fun but started so slowly it was almost painful. JW is a seriously cool and funny guy but sometimes he is so laid back I swear he’s just about to fall over! The morning session was completely ruled out by rain and an early crash which left the unfortunate rider with a compound fracture of the forearm and the circuit without an ambulance for three hours. We did do some serious thundering around the track in the afternoon though and the morning woes were soon forgotten, in no small part due to the fact 26

that we had the best instructors EVER in the pits and on track with us. Who wouldn’t pay attention when the likes of James Whitham, Jenny Tinmouth and the quietly spoken but magnificent Ian Hutchinson were dropping pearls of wisdom and good sense to those around them. A good day out and we got another certificate too. Not sure how much I learnt but rubbing shoulders with absolute legends (they had the garage space next to ours) was worth the admission price alone. Ask Ray, he got Hutchy to personally set up his bikes suspension. Then we headed towards the main event. We first had to join yet another club, No Limits, and finally entered ourselves in the three hour endurance race in July, run on the excellent international circuit at Silverstone. And so, the now legendary (in our own minds) R B Motors Race Team was officially born. There was a short discussion that, because I live in Southampton, Ray in Yeovil and Matt in Bridgewater we might become Team Widespread. But as Ray does lots of bike maintenance, supplies oils and such, transportation for himself and Matt and all the sets of tyre warmers we all agreed that a little promo for his garage was only fair and proper. Bike prep was now the big thing. Oil filters, filler caps and sump plugs were lock wired. Side stands off. Coolant out and water in. Hoping that we hadn’t missed anything vital to get past the scruitineers, the day approached. The running order was to arrive on Friday afternoon and get the scruitineering done and dusted. Race briefing was at 8:30 Saturday morning, practice would run from 10:30 till 11:10 then the race (our race) would start at 3pm, chequered flag drops at 6pm. But just saying that would be to vastly simplify a unique experience. This would be the first proper, competitive, organised road race of my life. Everything new and exciting, nerve wracking and, looking back, probably the best buzz ever. The first thing I noticed, which grew the more the weekend unfolded, is that a club race paddock

December 2015 – January 2016 • South East Biker Magazine

‘THE POISONER’ is absolutely stuffed full of diverse and fantastic characters. Even before we got to the garages to unload, while waiting for access to the complex, a little village sprung up as more and more people arrived. We found ourselves sat in the overflow car park come holding area surrounded by vans, caravans, mini buses and full sized buses all disgorging chatty, helpful and friendly people, laughing and recounting war stories of past events. This was great and we hadn’t even got in yet! After a bonkers mad dash to get to the garages the moment the gates opened, we unloaded the bikes immediately and hastened down to the scruitineering garage to get an early spot in the ever growing queue for the necessary and actually quite important check. Our bikes sailed through without comment and soon team R B Motors were to be found setting up in garage 26. We were in the new wing and as it was only six days after the Formula 1 GP I swear you could have eaten your dinner off the floor it was that clean! Once all the paddock paraphernalia that goes with trackday/racing bikes was arrayed around in our chosen spot it was time to kick back. The atmosphere of the place changed seamlessly from one of urgent bike race prep to that of a friendly carnival. Out came the beers, out came the barbeques, out came the wives and girlfriends who sort of took charge and

South East Biker Magazine • www.southeastbiker.co.uk

it was all laughs, catching up with old friends and making new ones. Everyone there was united by the magic of bikes and bike racing. On a personal note, I’d not experienced this on such a scale before. A group ride out with a bunch of good friends is a joy, but this was a gathering of literally hundreds of like minded individuals. It was brilliant and quite a special thing. I’ve been to many race meetings over the years to spectate and to support friends who race. Being in a paddock and chatting, drinking tea and helping out your friends whilst they race is great, but to actually do it and be part of the whole event, IN it instead of just watching it, really is something extra special. The team immediately next to us were seriously contending for the championship and their set up with everything from the ubiquitous tool boxes and tyre warmers right through to tables festooned with laptops and data sheets really put our basic foldy chair and flask of tea outfit in the shade. But there were no airs and graces here. They came across and shook our hands, genuinely wished us well as first timers and said ‘help yourself to brews and biscuits and feel free to check your progress and lap times on the computers’. From looking on in awe to sharing a laugh in the space or two minutes. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Bikers are the best people in the world, period... To be continued.

MICHELIN Starcross 5 MICHELIN Starcross 5 is the high performance motocross tyre tested and approved by riders of all levels, from world championship riders to amateur racers. Adaptable and versatile for all terrains – sand, soft, medium and hard – an easy selection choice. A better way forward

NEW RUBBER

Michelin Starcross 5 We were invited along to the launch of the new Michelin Starcross 5 Motocross tyre at Canada Heights. Tyre technology is a highly specialised field with millions ploughed into research and development. It was fascinating finding out about the work that goes into a new product…

I

t’s taken three years for Michelin to bring this specifically off road tyre to market. The Michelin Starcross 5 range breaks new ground for the Michelin group in the world of motocross. The company worked with riders and teams of all levels to come up with an exciting new product. USAGES AND TERRAINS Available in four versions, Hard, Medium, Soft and Sand, the tyre is designed to give a high level of performance on all terrains and in all conditions the motocross rider is likely to encounter. The new tyre features a lighter casing design which offers easier and quicker handling with no loss of durability due to the use of stronger, higher density materials. This more flexible casing also offers a number of other benefits for riders.

STARCROSS 5 BENEFITS

• Easier to fit. The ability to run higher pressures to reduce the risk of the tyre coming off the rim is a big bonus. • No running in is needed as the flexible casing offers great performance from the starting gate. • Improved traction in a straight line and

more progressive handling in corners. • Directional intermediate and side tread blocks ensure good steering response from the front tyre and traction from the rear. The central blocks are designed specifically to enhance braking performance and traction on all types of track and surfaces where they act like hooks to dig in and drive the motorcycle forward. NOT BEING MOTOCROSS EXPERTS, WE ASKED FREESTYLE FOR THEIR OPINION… “It has been a while since there was something really new in the world of motocross tyres and with the introduction of the Michelin Starcross 5 we have something to get genuinely excited about in what is otherwise a very staid market. “Our rider Mitch Lewis tested the tyre and discovered that, due to the soft wall design once he had increased the pressure from that which he would normally run at, the front tyre really gave confidence, building grip both in soft sand and on hard pack. It is very difficult to find a tyre that works well on all parts of the track. The rear tyre exceeded all expectations with exceptional and predictable grip. “As a retailer of MX tyres a big plus is the change of description Michelin has implemented e.g. soft for soft tracks, hard for hard pack tracks etc. rather than giving the tyre compound, makes tyre selection so much easier. All in all a big plus for Michelin.” Visit www.moto.michelin.com and search for ‘StarCross’

RACING CAREER

Life of a rookie

We bumped into Lloyd ‘#99’ Collins at a couple of Bemsee meetings this year at Brand Hatch. Here Lloyd describes how he started his racing career…

H

aving started out my biking life buzzing around on mopeds I have enjoyed all things bike from that moment onwards. After my year’s moped riding I soon passed my test at 17 for a full motorcycle licence. After having ridden on the road for just over a year, a chance to do a track day came up, booked by my bike mad cousin Bob, at Lydden Hill in August 2011. After my first session I knew that it was something that would be far too enjoyable to be my last track day. I felt like a hero lapping people on my CBR400NC23. Fast forward to December 2014, after five more track days and one big crash on the road, I found myself wanting to go racing. Where to start? I had done some Googling and found that I needed to join a club in order to get my ACU licence, but didn’t have much of an idea of what club to go with and what bike to race. In February 2015 it seemed that racing would not be something that I would be doing this year, but after just one conversation with mentor and friend, John Harris, my dream became something that could 30

happen – after all, as he mentioned that he might know of a bike for me to race! Things soon changed and, after chatting with Brian Smith whom I had met through John Harris Motorcycles, and had done a few track days over the years with, Brian offered me his Honda CBR600RR7 track bike. This would have been something out of my price range, having a CBR600 steelie as a road bike. Once the bike was sorted I decided to do a Rookie 600 class. The club running this is Bemsee so I gave them a call just a fortnight before the ACU test day was taking place and luckily there was a space available. After paying my club entry and going to the ACU test day, which is pretty much a track day being followed around by an instructor, I was now all ready to race. Easy as that!! I learnt a serious amount in my first race weekend and continued to do so every round and now I’ve completed a full season. Essential set up such as tyre pressures and how every psi counts, suspension settings and wet settings. I have also learnt a lot about fibre glass…there has been a lot of fibre glassing. I can highly recommend Bemsee as a club to race with as they are extremely helpful and supportive to rookies starting out racing. Details can be found at www.bemsee.net. You can see my full racing story at www.borrowedracing.com

WINTER READING

As the nights draw in, the opportunities for bike riding are more limited but we can sit down in front of a roaring fire, pour ourselves a glass of something warming and read about motorcycling instead…

THE LONG RIDE HOME/RUNNING TOWARDS THE LIGHT/THE POSTMAN

BY NATHAN MILLWARD We met Nathan at the London Motorcycle Show at Excel in February where he was promoting his books and was with his mighty steed Dorothy, a 105cc Australian post bike. Nathan rode from Australia to the UK, covering 23,000 miles in nine months, more or less on the spur of the moment. Most of us wouldn’t trust a bike like this to nip down to the shops on but Nathan’s trip proves it’s not the machinery that it’s undertaken on but the will to accomplish it and overcome adversity that is important. The Long Ride Home is the first book and details his journey home from Australia after deciding he would rather ride than fly! As well as an account of the trip, there’s a lot of personal stuff in here as well, which makes the book highly readable. Running Towards the Light follows Nathan on a subsequent road trip, this time across the USA, but on the same bike with the same minimal planning and lack of financial resources. Again Nathan includes a personal journey here as well. Well now you can buy both books combined under one title, The Postman! It costs £14 plus VAT and postage and is available via Nathan’s website www.nathanmillward.com

WHEN YOU DEAD, YOU DEAD

BY GUY MARTIN Following on from his autobiography, Guy tells more tales of his action packed life, some motorbike related, some just plain loopy. It probably helps to be paid by a television company to do much of this, but his passion for motorbike racing isn’t in doubt. In this past year alone, Guy has raced the Isle of Man TT and finished on the podium; bike trekked through 32

India; competed in solo 24-hour bicycles races; flown a stunt plane; broken a go-kart speed record down a French mountain and dusted himself off after a dramatic crash at the Dunrod 150 Superbike race. The book is available as a hardcover or Kindle download from Amazon.

DIFFERENT NATURES

BY GRAHAM FIELD We have reviewed Graham’s excellent In Search of Greener Grass and Ureka in previous issues. A bit of a common theme of all these books is undertaking motorcycle adventures on basic, cheap bikes. In fact, if you are planning a serious, long distance bike trip, the simple economy bike seems to be the weapon of choice. Different Natures is based on Graham’s diaries over a twelve year period covering three journeys all around the world. Graham’s style is particularly honest and he certainly has an opinion which makes his books particularly enjoyable. Different Natures is available for £12.99 including p&p There is also a rather splendid limited edition box set with all three books in a pannier replica with a sticker and a key ring. All for £34.99! Bargain. www. grahamfield.co.uk

SPEEDWAY LEGENDS

BY JOHN CHAPMAN AND JOHN SOMERVILLE Speedway used to be massive in this country and is very much underated as a spectator sport. However our own Tai Woffinden has just won his second World Speedway Championship and deserves wider recognition. So to give you some background, speedway historian John Chaplin and image archivist John Somerville have teamed up again to produce the third in their highly praised trilogy about one of the world’s most exciting sports. Speedway Legends deals with their lifelong passion for speedway racing and their admiration for the men who, over almost ten decades, have by their skill, daring and bravery, made it what it is. It honours the many personalities they particularly admire and is designed to make speedway enthusiasts aware of how their contribution to the development of the sport makes it so exciting today. As speedway’s centenary rapidly approaches, the dynamic partnership present another superb celebration of the sport that journalist Chaplin has written about and reported on for sixty of those years. Available as a hardcover book from Amazon for £19.99

THE KAWASAKI Z1 STORY — THE DEATH AND REBIRTH OF THE 900 SUPER 4

BY DAVE SHEEHAN I have seen grown men go weak at the knees and get all nostalgic when confronted with these 70’s beasts at shows and bike meets. So what’s the truth behind the legend? The Kawasaki Z1 Story tells how the smallest of Japan’s Big Four motorcycle manufacturers nearly beat the world’s biggest to become the first to the market with a Four, and how Honda’s CB750 debut almost spelled the end for the Z1, before Kawasaki stunned everybody with something bigger, faster and arguably better! It’s a fascinating tale charting Kawasaki’s emergence as a motorcycling power and their involvement with bike racing. A fascinating read. The Kawasaki Z1 Story is published by Veloce. TCX

Infinity EVO T

ime for new footwear! The TCX Infinity Gore-Tex boots I had been using daily were showing signs of terminal failure. They had served me well over about five years but, with the soles showing an alarming lack of grip whilst stationary and the stitching coming apart in places, it was time for us to part… It’s always worth a good look around to see what new products are available so I tried several styles and brands but nothing really hit the spot. The TCX Infinity boots are still available but they have another version, the ‘Evo’. So, are they worth the £279.99 against the £199.99 the older Infinity boots can be had for? Completely redesigned from previous versions, the new TCX Infinity GTX Boots are an all weather adventure/touring option. Improvements in comfort and fit are achieved with new cutouts and stretch at the top of the boot. The buckles are now a stronger, replaceable aluminium giving a more secure fitment around the upper leg and foot. The outer shell of the boot is composed of full grain leather with suede panels for extra flexibility. The inner suede panels have a heat guard to keep your lower legs cool. The Gore-Tex lining ensures the boots will be completely waterproof whilst maintaining breathability. I can vouch for this system on the previous model, so am confident they will deliver in this department. I tend to wear my boots both on and off the bike so comfort is key and TCX seem to have this well covered. Now something particularly interesting about the TXC Infinity Evo boots is apparent when 34

you turn them upside down. You will see Michelin stamped on the sole! TCX have worked with Michelin to design a sole based on Michelin Anakee adventure tyres. A novel idea and only time will tell whether this a genuine improvement in grip and durability or a gimmick. Nice little touches like small reflective panels on the back show the attention to detail.

MODULAR SOFT LUGGAGE

S

ome bikers like it hard, some like it soft. We are talking luggage here and everyone has their preference. UK company, Kriega, are one of the market leaders in the soft luggage market and for good reason. All the kit is extremely well made and comes with a 10 year warranty on any material or production defects. The Kriega luggage is modular so can be used in many combinations for the ideal luggage solution. It fits any bike and, with the natty strap system, takes seconds to attach or remove. The US30 comes with carrying straps so can be easily hauled around off the bike. It has a removable 100% waterproof liner that is velcroed inside. Not only does it look immensely cool on and off the bike but the ability to keep your luggage slim and compact means you don’t even notice it when riding, especially if filtering. I took a US30 with a US10 bag strapped on top with two people’s kit around Europe and it was perfect for the job. The US30 costs £95. Kriega kit can be bought from GetGeared and JW Groombridge.
