MORE BLISS! Well-known agony aunt Denise Robertson recently reopened Fulwell beauty salon, Pure Bliss after completion of an extensive renovation. The refurbishments were carried out by owner Lisa Seferi’s dad, and include upgrades of existing facilites which now includes 6 treatment rooms, air tan room, bare minerals make up studio, 3 nail bars and a relaxation lounge. The completion of the renovation comes just months after Pure Bliss gained Decléor Regional Salon of the Year award, which Lisa collected in Paris.

ROTARY CORNER The Rotary Club of Seaburn was busy in Seaburn and Fulwell before Christmas. As well as taking Santa on his Sleigh around the area, members were collecting over two weekends in Morrison’s and Clay’s Garden Centre. Members of the public were very generous and we raised £5,000, all of which will be used for charitable purposes. Rotary International is a world-wide organisation with 1.2million members in 32,000 clubs across more than 200 countries. Each club is autonomous and arranges its own programme of events. There are 3 clubs covering the SR6 area (Seaburn, Wearside and Cleadon) with another 6 in the City of Sunderland. Some of these clubs got together to organise a Youth Musical Spectacular at the Empire in January. On 23rd February we are planning to have a shop unit in The Bridges to showcase some of the things Rotary does.
SANTA VISITS CLEADON and BOLDON Santa brought lots of good cheer to the villages of Cleadon and Boldon prior to Christmas when he visited courtesy of the Rotary Club of Cleadon’s Santa Sleigh. Not only did Santa check up to see who had been naughty or good he also helped the Rotary Club to raise £3,500 for charities and good causes. This year’s Rotary President, David Whitehead said
Why not pay us a visit to have a chat? We are presently planning our programme of events for the next few months. There is a strong fun and fellowship element to our activities. If you would like to know more about what we do, perhaps with a view to becoming a member, then come along to one of our meetings at 12.30 pm each Tuesday at the Marriott Hotel. Please telephone Keith Higgin on 536 0102 to arrange a visit. ‘Despite it being one of the coldest and wettest years it’s always delightful to see the excited look on the children’s faces when Santa comes around. I’d also like to thank all the residents who so generously donated money making it another successful Christmas event.’ The Rotary Club meets every Monday at the Little Haven Hotel in South Shields at 7:15pm. If anyone would be interested in finding out more about the club or would like to go along for a visit please contact Chris Leek on 07918 615 181.

talking tax by steven tuck well
Tax Planning Tips: As we fast approach the end of another tax year we have prepared some quick tips and advice on how to reduce your tax liability and ensure that your allowances are maximised. Remember to act now, before the tax year ends on 5th April 2010. Buy a new van: Most small businesses with a 31st March or 5th April year end should consider replacing their existing van or even purchasing an additional van before the year end. This type of expenditure would qualify for Annual Investment Allowance, as long as the total business capital expenditure does not exceed £50,000 in a full trading year. This would reduce the taxable profit of the business by the cost of the van (after being adjusted for personal use) and ultimately could reduce your tax bill by thousands! What’s more this allowance can be claimed if the van is financed on hire purchase or lease purchase agreements. If you operate as a sole trader or in a partnership this could also increase your entitlement to Tax Credits by hundreds of pounds for the current and following tax year! Save in ISA’s: Remember that interest and gains made within ISA’s are exempt from tax and therefore should be fully utilized if possible. The current annual investment limit is £7,200 of which up to £3,600 can be saved in a cash ISA with one provider. The remainder can be invested in stocks and shares with either the same or another provider. Not many people are aware that the annual limit for people aged over 50 rose to £10,200 of which £5,100 can be held in cash from 6th October 2009. Use your Pension: Pension contributions attract full tax relief. This means that you can reduce your income tax liability by putting extra cash or assets into your pension if you’re a higher rate tax payer. Also by contributing more into your pension you could increase your entitlement to Tax Credits! Plan for Inheritance Tax: If you estimate that your estate will attract inheritance tax on your death (generally £325,000 for single individuals or £650,000 for widowed individuals at today’s rates) don’t forget to use your annual gift exemptions. These include capital gifts worth up to £3,000 in each tax year, Wedding or civil partnership ceremony gifts (£5,000 parents, £2,500 grandparents and £1,000 anyone else), small gifts up to the value of £250 to as many people as you like. Bring forward Dividends: If you operate a limited company and your company has sufficient reserves and
your personal earnings are in excess of £100,000 per annum why not take large dividends before the 5th April. This will ensure that you take advantage of the current lower tax rates of 32.5% this tax year rather than the higher tax rate of 42.5% already announced for next year and could also avoid reducing your personal allowance! Transfer Assets: Put non-earners allowances to work. If your spouse does not earn, or earns less than their personal allowance, you should consider moving any income generating assets into their ownership. Regardless of whether or not they are earning, they will still qualify for their personal allowance. Making use of this could save you hundreds of pounds every year. This could include bank accounts, shares that generate income or even possibly employing them within your existing business. Landlords Energy Saving Allowance: There is a tax allowance of £1,500 per property in respect of certain energy saving expenditure (such as insulation) which can be claimed as expenditure by landlords. Ensure this type of work is carried out before the 5th April 2010 to reduce your property profits. Gift Aid: If you make gift aid donations and are a higher rate tax payer remember to make them before the end of the tax year. These donations are entered on your personal tax return and will extend your basic rate band, saving you tax. Sell Capital Item’s: If you have several capital items (shares, properties etc) which you are considering disposing of, why not dispose of them in separate years to maximise the capital gains exemptions of £9,600. Consider sharing ownership with your spouse prior to sale, as any subsequent disposals will attract two annual exemptions. Company Car Fuel: If you are provided with a company car and fuel by your employer it may be worth considering repaying the approved HMRC fuel only advisor rates back to your employer to avoid the benefit in kind charge. Depending on the cars engine size, the rates are between 10p and 20p per personal mile travelled and vary throughout the year. However repaying £422 to your employer could save £1,487 in tax! (Based on a Vauxhall Astra Estate 1.9 CDTi 8v 120 SXi 5dr with 159 co2g/km on a higher rate tax payer travelling 4000 private mile per year). The article above is intended to give you an informative summary of the current taxation laws and reliefs which could be available to individuals and should NOT be treated as professional advice. However we will be more than happy to assist you if you have any queries or require specific advice on any tax or accounting issues.

of goodness? relieve blood pressure and boost serotonin levels, our brain’s natural anti-depressant. All good reasons to indulge a little, especially this month. Unfortunately chocolate can cause headaches in sensitive folk and over-indulgence, even in dark chocolate, increases our sugar intake, which is certainly not good for our health! But what could be nicer on a cold Valentine’s Day than snuggling up with your loved one and a cup of hot chocolate? Buy cocoa powder, preferably organic and fair-trade, and make a hot drink, sweetened with honey.
The Aztecs valued chocolate so much their taxation was levied in cocoa beans! The hot frothy drink they made was reserved for warriors, nobility and priests and was said to confer wisdom and vitality. Emperor Montezuma, not one for moderation, drank 50 goblets a day. More recently one of the world’s oldest centenarians, Jeanne Calment (1875-1997), ate 2lbs a week until her physician persuaded her to give it up at the age of 119, 3 years before her death. While Jeanne and Montezuma are extraordinary examples of the apparent health benefits of chocolate, recent trials have suggested that the antioxidants and flavanoids in cocoa improve verbal and visual memory, reaction times, balance certain hormones, help to 10

No you’re not dreaming. This is a health article about chocolate...and chillies too actually but I couldn’t work them into the title! It is Valentine’s Day this month after all and they’re both healthy additions to your diet, in moderation! Before you cheer and rip open that box of Ferraro Rocher, a word of caution: it’s the cocoa that counts. Forget about white chocolate with its combination of butter and sugar or milk chocolate which can be as little as 10% cocoa. Instead cultivate a taste for the dark sort, with at least 70% cocoa solids.
Chocolate and chillies both encourage the secretion of endorphins While you’re at it why not cook the object of your affections an authentic Mexican chilli dish by adding cocoa to the sauce? The nutrient capsaicin, found in chillies, is a powerful antioxidant and can help to prevent many conditions such as high cholesterol, heart and lung diseases and cataracts. It also stimulates blood circulation which boosts the immune system and it even relieves pain. Chocolate and chillies both encourage the secretion of endorphins: natural chemicals produced in every cell of the body. These chemicals relax muscle tissue, relieve pain, generate clearer thinking and act as mood enhancers. To maintain good health we must produce more endorphins, our ‘happy hormones’, than disease-causing stress hormones. So this St Valentine’s day indulge a little and think of all those healthy endorphins. You could even try chilli chocolate – and give yourself a double whammy! Valentine’s Blues Who else hates Valentine’s Day? Ok I’m a guy and maybe women look at these things differently but to me Valentine’s Day is something to be endured rather than enjoyed. If you don’t have a girlfriend or a wife Valentine’s is pretty easy... a night out with your single mates down the pub and a kebab on the way home. That was me a few short years ago. Then I acquired a girlfriend who last year became my fiancée. Now don’t get me wrong I love her to bits but I love her every day, not just on Valentine’s Day. Why is romance so heavily weighted towards February 14th? With all the pressure to turn this 24 hour period into a perfect romance-fest is it any wonder that things can go pear-shaped. Take last year: “Where are you taking her?,” asked one of my female colleagues the week before. “Erm I’m not sure,” I replied, panicking slightly as the proximity of the date slowly dawned on me. She shot me one of those meaningful glances: the kind you girls do so well, loaded with subtext. I spent my lunch hour frantically ringing restaurants long booked up by smug pillocks with better memories than mine.
arrow never misses, which is why this card is sealed with kisses???? Please tell me you girls don’t find that cute. Then there’s the question of a gift. This is enough to bring the strongest soul to his knees. You’ll hate us for underwear which doesn’t fit and for chocolates when you’re on a post Christmas diet. Jewellery is about the only option but Christmas is barely over, we’re skint and surely one compulsory shopping event per year is enough for any man. In fact, by the time we’ve bought a card, flowers, a gift and a meal there’s not much change from a hundred quid... wouldn’t you rather have the cash? I’ve come to the conclusion that it was all so much easier in the old days when knights only had to battle evil princes and wild animals in order to win the hand of a fair lady. I’ll take a battle with a wild beast over an hour spent in Clinton Cards any day of the week. But when all is said and done I love her and this year I intend to give her the best Valentine’s Day ever. So bring me my steed... and where did I put my sword?
Never mind, I thought, I’ll cook dinner for her instead. Unfortunately in the kitchen I’m more Mr. Bean than Gordon Ramsey so this was not one of my better ideas. For the record it’s really easy to burn fillet steak and nobody told me that baked potatoes take a lot longer than the fifteen minutes I assumed they’d need. The evening was not a success. At least I bought her a card and believe me I should have received extra Valentine points for finding the only one in the country without nauseating bunny-pictures or a sickeningly sentimental verse inside, I mean...Cupid’s

At the probate
start of January Tim dragged himself residential/commercial conveyancing divorce out motoring offences of bed to go back to work after the Christmas break. He had not enjoyed the holiday period as he and his wife Sally had spent the entire time arguing. Just before he left for work Sally said that she needed to speak to him. What she said next came as a shock. She no longer loved him, she had found someone else and she wanted a divorce. She also said that he was to leave the house as soon as possible but that he could see the
children on a regular basis. Reeling from this news Tim arrived at Emmersons solicitors for advice. Tim was told that he had as much right to live in the matrimonial home as Sally. They should decide whether the house should be sold and the proceeds split between them (not necessarily in equal shares). Alternatively one of them could buy out the other’s share. Tim was advised not to move out until these issues were sorted out. Things could become very difficult for him if Sally’s new partner decided to move in before all financial matters were settled! As far as the children were concerned, it was established that Tim

legal matters had been a very hands on Dad. He was used to caring for the children when Sally was at work. He was used to taking them to school. There was no reason why Sally should decide that she should be the main carer.
“
“
Anyone in this position should seek advice before making any rash decision
Tim was asked to start collecting all of his financial documentation. This included details of his pension, savings and salary and the value of the matrimonial home. Sally’s solicitor would provide all of her financial documents. Then an offer could be put forward to settle matters. Emmersons were able to liase with a mortgage advisor with Tim’s authority. Basic details were given, the idea being to find out how much by way of a new mortgage Tim could raise either to buy out Sally or to purchase a new home for himself.
Armed with this knowledge Tim advised Sally that he would not be moving out and that he would continue to take the children to school every day as he had always done. Sally was so desperate to be with her new partner that she moved out. She was prepared to allow Tim to buy her out. Whilst this is not a happy ending story it gives a flavour of how people can be helped with the right advice. January is the busiest time of year for divorce lawyers. Christmas can be a very stressful time for couples who have been struggling to get along. They often find themselves thrown together for nearly two weeks and at the end of that time one party often feels that they can’t go on with the relationship. Anyone in this position should seek advice before making any rash decisions. And don’t dismiss Relate as “not for me.” There are many out there who have lived to fight another day together. garden view
This month – Love is in the air! What do you buy the gardener in your life for Valentine’s Day? Flowers are no good... we have gardens full of the things, and most of the gardeners I know, myself included, prefer our plants living and breathing in their natural environment.
gift but even better when filled with a few gardening goodies such as packets of seed, water retaining granules, plant food etc. You could add some hand tools too, such as a trowel and a fork. Ideally they’ll be stainless steel and have long handles for ease of use.
The non-green-fingered venture into dangerous territory when they try to buy plants. There are so many variables. The plant not only has to suit the taste of the gardener in question but satisfy trickier issues such as whether it’s too invasive; whether it will suit the soil and even whether it might poison the gardener’s dog or worse, children!
Hot drinks don’t remain hot for long outside, even on a warm day. I’ve lost count of the number of cold cups of tea I’ve drunk! The canny Valentine who gave me an insulated mug with a lid could expect a very warm reception indeed.
It’s a thorny issue (pardon the pun) so I’ve put together a few horticultural Valentine suggestions which should render your favourite gardener weak at the knees.
Finally, don’t forget gardening vouchers. Often we’ll spot the perfect plant or gardening accessory when we’re strapped for cash so vouchers are a perfect gift to save for a rainy day...and gardeners love rainy days, Valentine’s or not.
Don’t buy a sweatshirt which declares we’re ‘headgardener! They’re the height of naff and anyway, we have plenty of old, comfy clothes which do the job. However, if you can find one, we would love a tough tunic or apron-like affair, preferably thorn-proof, and with lots of deep pockets so our secateurs don’t fall out! Then there are wellies. Gardening folk love wellies. We prefer something with a thick sole but there’s so much choice out there! I love bright and cheerful wellies but for the ultimate in warmth and breathability I can recommend a proper Goretex pair...sheer luxury, with a price tag to match! A proper long-necked watering can, with a brass rose will earn you Valentine brownie points. Don’t go too large because they’re heavy when full – 3-4 litres is about the right size. A bunch of long-stemmed red roses will set you back about £40 minimum and last but a few days. For a similar price you can buy the gardener in your life Felco secateurs (with Valentine red handles) and they’ll last forever. I know which I’d prefer. Garden trugs are so practical. Most gardeners I know would be delighted to receive one. The trug is a great TO A DV ERT I SE H ERE CAL L 0 1 9 1 5 4 8 1 3 3 3 o r e m ail info@sr6.co.uk

Hot Shoes, Cool Feet Spring footwear trends A new season is a great excuse to buy new shoes... not that we girls really need an excuse but it’s nice to have one anyway. With so many delicious spring styles on the shelves what are the key trends we should be looking out for on our local high street? Well Spring 2010 is all about ‘look at me’ feet. True, not many of us will be able to pull off the teninch platforms designed by Alexander McQueen but the trend on the catwalks this year was clear...height is right! Short guys watch out: platforms are everywhere this season. Look out for animal print wedges similar to the leopardskin styles from Alexander Wang. Chanel favoured chunky-heeled clogs with platform soles while Prada was all about adornment: their toe straps tinkled with tiny metal baubles while ankle straps were clear and heels were coloured. Anyone of these trends will work for you this spring so take your pick. Colour is also set for a big comeback. Red and orange are the colours of the season for footwear. They make a great accent for a neutral outfit but also pick out the colours from this season’s bold prints. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you need to match your bag to your shoes. Let your feet take centre stage and
accessorise with a neutral oversized bag instead. Last summer stylish celebrities like Fearne Cotton and Chloe Sevigny stepped out in socks and sandals. The look continues this year. For a super-stylish effect follow Louise Goldin’s lead and team funky metallic shoes with soft pastel socks worn over matching tights. If that feels a little too cutting edge for suburbia then try a more subtle approach. Both Burberry and Marni matched neutral slouchy socks and stacked platforms for a relaxed spring look. High-heeled ankle boots are another key trend for spring. Team them with knee-high socks for that ‘just stepped off the catwalk’ look à la Betsy Johnson and Lacoste. But what about the boys? What will they be wearing? While we girls teeter around on our platforms the male trend is in the opposite direction with thin soles and barely-there heels. Lace-ups are reworked in soft materials such a calfskin and canvas. Micro-textures are a big trend. Look for embossing and shiny contrasting inserts. Moccasins get all sophisticated this spring and are very low cut. Perhaps it’s time for your chap to get a pedicure? Flowery prints are a hot trend on both leather and canvas but if the eco-hippy look isn’t to your man’s tastes then seek out military-inspired styles instead. I hope we’ve given you some great ideas. Check out your local high street this season and step into spring with style.

spring fashion
What’s hot on the high street this spring?
Economic forecasts predict we may, or may not, depending on which one you believe, be coming out of recession. Either way, shoppers are being more cautious with their money and designers have paid attention. This is the year for buying a couple of investment pieces and teaming them with charity-shop finds or simply being creative with accessories. The first 2010 trend lends itself well to this approach. Many designers have gone all nostalgic, harking back to the 70s but with a modern twist. The look is playful and girly for women, with vintage patterns and faded 70s colours of pale blue, beige and soft khaki complimented by more intense yellows, oranges and violets. Silhouettes are retro-elegant with fitted, mid-knee length, high-waisted skirts and Capri pants set off with slim-fitting jackets and preppy sweaters in pastel shades. For men there will be a return to bell-bottomed trousers or boot-cut jeans and floral shirts with fitted jackets. We recommend you hit the charity shops and dressagencies in search of authentic pieces. While some designers looked back others had their sights set firmly on the future. Their look was all about urban femininity for women with architectural, structured shapes and strong shoulders in modern fabrics. The look is softened with bustiers and flippy, printed skirts. 26
Colours are fresh and can be bright or faded. Look for pop- art tints of green, pink, turquoise and orange. For men the look is clean and uncluttered. Natural colours and fabrics never go out of style which is why many designers rework this look season after season. In 2010 the palette is serene and chalky, teamed with deeper taupes and mauves and accents of green, pink and orange. For women, look for one-piece dresses and jumpsuits in soft jersey, crepes and silks, trimmed with drawstrings knots and braids. Elegant ease is the order of the day. The male version is minimal and elegant in natural, crinkled fabrics and slightly over-sized pieces designed for comfort while oozing style. Finally, lots of designers have focussed on South America. They’ve been inspired by everything from the military regimes through traditional folk costumes to the glamour of Latin-American dance. Using a palette of deep violet, flame red, ochres and clays, army-style jackets have been reworked with city attitude. Waists are defined and the over-all look is tapered and chic and set off with Aztecinspired accessories. Check out what’s available on your high-street this spring. From charity shops to chic boutiques there’s something to suit every personality and every pocket. Now there’s no excuse not to look your very best. www.SR6.co.uk : FEBRUARY 2010

RECIPE
Tangy Lemon Pud Put some zing into February with this retro dessert
This is such a simple dessert and always popular. I love the way that, during cooking, the batter separates out to produce a tangy sauce at the bottom and a light airy sponge on top. Serves 4-6 Ingredients 75g / 3oz softened butter 150g / 5oz caster sugar The zest and juice of 4 lemons 4 eggs, separated 50g / 2oz plain flour 75ml / 3fl oz milk Preparation Preheat the oven to 180C / 350F / Gas 4. Grease a 1 litre / 13/4 pint deep-sided ovenproof dish with a little butter. Place the butter, sugar and lemon zest in a large bowl. Cream them together until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the lemon juice and the
28
egg yolks. The mixture will look curdled but don’t panic, you haven’t made a mistake! Sieve the flour into the bowl and fold into the batter. Stir in the milk. Whisk the egg whites until they form soft peaks then fold gently into the mixture. Spoon or pour into the prepared dish. Stand the dish in a large roasting tray filled with enough water to come half way up the sides of the dessert dish. Bake for 30-40 minutes until the top is golden. Serve immediately with single cream or crème fraiche.

Protect Yourself!
It’s not just our children we need to worry about. Adults can fall victim too.
Hands up who worries that their teenager might be at risk from potential child abusers when they go online. It’s a valid concern but did you know that we adults are also at risk from those same offenders? In the early days of the internet people, including potential offenders, believed the web offered complete anonymity. Those days are gone. High profile celebrity prosecutions have ensured that paedophiles now make every effort to conceal their identity. Activity on home internet accounts is easy to trace and no offender wants to lead the police straight to their front door so they develop ways to cover their tracks and one of the latest is ‘piggybacking’. This is the unauthorised use of another person’s wireless broadband connection. Piggybacking masks the identity of an offender. They can download or distribute offensive, illegal material via an unsecured Wi-Fi connection without having to register a service in their own name. Worryingly that unsecured Wi-Fi connection may be yours. A staggering one in six Wi-Fi connections in the UK is left unprotected and this opens the way for abuse to occur. The Washington Post recently reported such a case in the US. Police arrived with a warrant at an 30
apartment block in Arlington County, Virginia. They were there to arrest a man suspected of distributing child pornography via his internet connection. However, the owner of the apartment in question turned out to be an elderly lady with an open Wi-Fi connection which covered ten storeys of her building. In this instance the police had to drop the investigation but it begs the question: what if she hadn’t been an elderly lady but a single, middle-aged man? Wi-Fi piggybacking raises the real prospect of someone being investigated or even convicted of a crime committed via their internet connection of which they are entirely innocent. Even if the police can separate the crime from the connection-owner the mere threat of police scrutiny can have devastating consequences: people have committed suicide while being investigated for such offences. Take a look at your Wi-Fi connection. Does it use WPA (wireless protected access) encryption or the older, hackable, WEP (wired equivalent privacy)? Is it password protected? Both the connection and the router should be protected and the passwords should be strong: a random series of letters and numbers is the most difficult type of password to hack. Hide the router’s SSID (service set identifier) to minimise the chance of it being compromised. Finally, if you suspect your connection has been violated, report it. By protecting ourselves we make it more difficult for those who want to harm our children which can only be a good thing. www.SR6.co.uk : FEBRUARY 2010

Sadie the Bra Lady You have heard of a facelift (expensive). Why not have a bust lift? (not so expensive). One visit to Sadie the Bra lady should do the trick. There is no surgery involved at all. Your bust will be transformed in minutes by a qualified bra fitter who has been trained by Sadie herself in the art of selecting the correct size and style to suit your personal body shape. Come into a warm friendly relaxing atmosphere where you will have a separate private fitting room for you to decide which bras are suitable for the required occasion. On your first visit you will be astonished at the change in your posture and your confidence with your new shape. And the price? An average spend is £30.00 for a pretty bra. If looked after properly, it usually last three years. This is a cost of £10 per year, 20 pence per week or even under 3 pence per day. Add up the cost of all the bras in your lingerie drawers that are uncomfortable, unworn and unnecessary. Then telephone for an appointment or call in. Why not book a group visit with your friends. It’s fun!!! (Excerpt from a customer’s poem) If your boobs are all droopy and hanging around She has bras that will lift them right up off the ground She has bras that lift up and bras that shove out You’ll not know your boobs when Sadie’s about. “Within 2 minutes I was transformed from a shapeless lump to a smart shapely figure”. LT “Delighted with Service, delighted with choice and fit – and even more delighted there was no tape measure. Will keep in touch”. JW “Finally I got to visit the legendary Sadie the bra lady and all the hype was true. I never believed I could go so high!” DG Herts “Sadie you’ve changed my life! Thanks I was so impressed that I came back with my Mum and Mum-in-law for Mothers Day”. GAJ
