If you need more space, without the hassle (and cost) of moving home, Lush Lofts create beautiful spaces, whilst adding value to your home. We talk to Rory at Pratts Pods Ltd, on Elms Walk, about the best ‘Green’ phones, and Abbie Bell of ClickStyle really does go ‘Clean and Green’ on page 36. The Lazy Frog on Denmark Street (on the back cover) show you how the Lazy Frog is indeed green, in more ways than one! There is plenty of Family Fun over at Holme Grange craft village, with lots of children’s activities, fused class courses with Gayle of Enchanting Glass Designs, craft markets and a very special ‘Father’s Day’ celebration. Whilst at Holme Grange, I spend 5 minutes with Rebecca of Sarvanga Yoga, as she encourages everyone to try yoga, and she has a very special offer

Talking of Father’s day, Charlie at Stefans butchers has the best treat ever for Dads - who can resist a great steak sandwich? Get your orders in early, and while the sun is shining, place your orders for those weekend barbecues with family and friends also. Are you taking Dad out for a meal? Need more space?

Here are a few reasons why you should consider a loft conversion...

EXTRA SPACE

No matter what you plan on using your loft conversion for, you’re guaranteed to end up with lots more living space. Loft conversions are often called ‘extensions’ as well, because without having to actually alter the physical size or shape of your house, you are effectively extending it by gaining another room. It can be used for everything from a bedroom, to a gym, or even just a room that anyone can make use of. Whatever you decide to go for, we know your house will feel so much bigger when you start to utilise the space you have available in your loft.

SAVE THE OUTDOORS

Not only is a loft conversion much easier to install than adding on a house extension, but by choosing to build upwards rather than outwards, you are saving precious outdoor space. Perhaps if your garden is big you have no issue with losing some of

ACCOMMODATE YOUR FAMILY

If your family is growing and you are in need of an extra room, most tend to look to moving house and finding somewhere with more rooms. This upheaval comes with many downsides including leaving an area your family love and have grown attached to, as well as perhaps having to take your children out of school and bring them to a new one. A great solution to this is to convert your loft into an extra room. Extend your home without the upheaval and stay in the area you have become attached to.

WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JUNE 2023

INCREASED VALUE

If you do think that your family will inevitably move some day, converting your loft is still not a bad idea. Having an extra room that can be used for any number of options is a fantastic way to add value to your property. A functional space can add as much as 25% to your house and considering that a loft conversion is typically much cheaper than other types of extension, this is a very easy way to consider the future of your house and how you can add value to it.

INSULATION

Did you know that heat rises? This is how a lot of heat is lost in many homes: when heat rises and is lost through the roof. This can be resolved through a loft conversion as the attic walls are reinforced and the floor and ceiling become insulated. By improving this space and reinforcing the strength of each wall, even without intentionally adding insulation, you will be helping to lower the heating bills for the rest of the home.

NATURAL LIGHT

A loft conversion, as the highest room in your house, can aid in bringing in much more sunlight into your home. By placing your new windows in the right location, you could find this room filled with natural light and you’ll soon be finding yourself basking in the warm sun of this room.

Whether you are looking for more room, to add value to your house, to increase sunlight, or just as a new project for your home, there are countless benefits of loft conversions!

Maximise the space in your home, with a Lush Loft Conversion

We can convert your unused attic or loft space into a functional and usable room, strengthening the existing roof structure, adding insulation and windows, installing flooring, and fitting electrical and plumbing services. Add valuable living space to your home without the need for a costly extension. Contact us today to discuss your requirements. 07590

COMMUNITY INTERVIEW

WL: Hi Debs, Could you explain what the acronym CLASP stands for please, and what exactly is CLASP?

D: CLASP stands for Caring Listening and Support Partnership, as decided by our members. We are a Wokingham based self-advocacy charity for adults with learning disabilities.

WL: Who funds CLASP?

D: Under the Care Act of 2005 the local council must provide services for adults with learning disabilities. Wokingham has an above average number of adults with a learning disability. CLASP won the contract to provide these services and have been running since 2005. We also do our own fundraising (with our members fundraising for themselves) and apply for grants to enable us to run (mostly free) sessions throughout the week. We rely heavily on this extra income and donations to be able to provide the range of vital services we offer.

WL: How long as it been going, and who runs it?

D: CLASP has been running since 2005 and is a registered charity governed by trustees, 50% of which are adults with learning disabilities. We have a small team of dedicated part-time staff and wonderful volunteers, with Debs Morrison as our CEO. We also have a partnership with CAB, Wokingham. Having adults with learning disabilities at the forefront of our charity means that we speak from the heart and from lived experience. We work hard to raise awareness of what it is like to live with a learning disability. We have a Queens Award winning training group called Listen To Us who wrote and deliver our training.

WL: Where are you based, and how can you be contacted?

D: Our offices are in The Charity and Community Hub, Wokingham, we offer sessions within the

12 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JUNE 2023

Wokingham borough. We can be contacted by email admin@claspwokingham.org, or telephone 0118 228 1801.

WL: Can members of our local community join you to volunteer to help?

D: Yes they may, we are also always looking for funding and opportunities to share our stories via our training so that more people have an appreciation and understanding of our community.

WL: What events do you have coming up in June?

D: Regular sessions in June include Movie Mates (first Monday from 7pm at Showcase Winnersh), Coffee Shop drop-in (Tuesday morning at the Bradbury Centre from 10am-12pm, with Dancing to Music on the first Tuesday and Book Corner on the second Tuesday), Happy & Healthy Club with Seated Pilates (at the Bradbury Centre on a Wednesday from 9.30am-10.15am apart from the first Wednesday), Craft Club (Wednesday from 12.30pm-2.00pm at The Charity and Community Hub), Evening DropIn at Sedero Lounge (Wednesday from 6pm-8pm, staffed on the first and third Wednesday, otherwise self-led), Active Session (Thursday, currently at the FBC for Woky Bikes 4 All with My Journey from 10am-12pm), Gardening Club (Wednesday at Oakfield Court, 1pm-3pm), Take Notice which is our campaigning group (Friday at the Bradbury Centre from 10am-12pm – 9th – visit from Berkshire College of Agriculture about the courses they offer, 16th – discussing ‘Good News and Success’ stories in preparation for Learning Disability Awareness week), Choir (at the Bradbury Centre every other Friday, 12.30pm-1.30pm and Puzzle Club (at Wokingham library every other Friday, 12.30pm-1.30pm).

It is Volunteer Week from the 1st of June, our volunteers are integral to what we do, we will be celebrating their importance and impact, posting our volunteers stories on our Facebook page (www. facebook.com/claspwokingham) and LinkedIn.

It is Learning Disability Awareness Week from the 19th of June, a really important time in our calendar. We will post daily on Facebook about our members’ successes and have a packed week of activities and entertainment planned. On Monday, the Health Bus is coming to town, Tuesday we have a life planning workshop, Wednesday brings the Happy & Healthy Club with Seated Pilates and a themed Craft Club, then our evening drop in at Sedero Lounge, Thursday we have our Active Session in conjunction with My Journey Wokingham at the FBC and our Gardening Club and we’ll round up the week on Friday with a picnic, hosted by us at the site of our Gardening Club at Oakfield Court, 11.30am-2.00pm.

WL: What is the ‘Happy and Healthy’ club?

D: Our members named this club, we do various activities to help combat physical and mental health inequalities that are linked with having a learning disability. In it we run Seated Pilates three times a month on Wednesdays from 9.30am to 10.15am, Dancing to Music runs monthly on a Tuesday, Active Sessions on a Thursday and Choir every other week on a Friday plus singouts. We would love to add to this program with cookery lessons for example but need more funding to be able to do so. We are an active, busy charity and make an enormous difference to the lives of those with learning disabilities in our community, but don’t take our word for it, in the words of our members…

“Being a member of CLASP has been the best 10 years of my life.”

“I am so proud of us all from the talent show and really appreciate all the support and hard work you put in to bring out the best in us.”

“How great to have people who can speak so well about the important issues.“

Feel free to join us. Membership is free.

THE BEST GREEN PHONES

SUSTAINABLE AND ECO-FRIENDLY SMARTPHONES.

Sustainability has become a huge factor for many consumers, and people are looking for more eco-friendly options. While you might not think of tech as good for the environment, many tech companies - and smartphones - are going green.

In a recent study the Apple iPhone 14 was voted “Best green phone overall’’. The Samsung Galaxy S22 series has the “Best camera in a green phone’’. Motorola Edge has the “Best battery life in a green phone’’.

But, should we really be purchasing new smartphones or is it better for the environment (not to mention our finances) to consider refurbished? We asked the experts at Pratts Pods on Elms Walk in the centre of Wokingham for their views...

IS REFURBISHED REALLY AS GOOD AS NEW?

“A refurbished device was either pre-owned or used as a display item. However, refurbished products go through the same testing process as new devices do, so any defect is found and repaired, and any faulty part is replaced. Here at Pratts Pods we are proud to announce that we are Berkshire’s only Apple certified independent repair provider, using only genuine parts and making sure every device is thoroughly tested, which means that customers receive rock solid guarantees, so yes, it really is as good as new.

Have you lost Pensions, savings or investments?

Here’s how to find them. More than two in five savers lose track of tens of thousands of pounds in pensions, Isas and savings accounts. We explain how to trace lost pensions and what your options are.

Here’s how to find them. More than two in five savers lose track of tens of thousands of pounds in pensions, Isas and savings accounts. We explain how to trace lost pensions and what your options are. We’re all feeling the pinch as the cost-of-living crisis continues, so there’s never been a better time to check whether you own a valuable forgotten asset, such as lost pensions.

Research by wealth manager Netwealth has found more than two in five UK savers lose track of £30k or more in self-invested personal pensions (SIPPs), Isas and savings accounts, while three out of five have failed to recover some type of asset. The problem is that often savers don’t have the necessary information to recover an asset or have no means of finding it. According to Netwealth, if

these forgotten assets were recovered, consumers could cover their energy bills or pay for holidays or a house deposit. Meanwhile, the Office for National Statistics estimates that the affluent saver has on average lost access to between £20-30k, spanning various types of financial accounts including SIPPs, workplace pensions, Isas, savings accounts and premium bonds. Research by tracing service Gretel estimates 20 million people have thousands of pounds unclaimed, totalling £50bn stashed away.

Charlotte Ransom, CEO and founder of Netwealth, said: “The very high number of people struggling to track down all their financial assets is deeply worrying. More needs to be done to ensure savers can easily find and access their investments and, ideally, view them holistically.”

Lost pensions

Forgotten assets can be in a variety of places, from investments, shares and savings accounts to insurance policies. But the biggest source of forgotten wealth is money in pension funds. Gretel estimates that £37bn is waiting in lost pensions. No wonder, most of us have switched jobs a few times in our careers, leaving behind workplace pensions. It is easy to forget about pension pots built up from previous jobs. Combine that with a house move and it is easy for pension firms to lose track of us, so we no longer receive annual statements. The number of misplaced pension pots has risen by 75% over the last four years to almost three million, totalling approximately £26.6bn in value, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI). These lost pots are worth an average of £9,470 each, which could make a massive difference to someone in retirement. According to Netwealth, over a quarter (28%) of respondents have lost £50,000 or more in SIPPs.

To trace a pension, you can reach out to your pension provider and request the latest account statements or access to their online accounts, said Ransom. She added: “[You] will undoubtedly be asked security questions or may need documentation such as proof of residence, passport etc. [You] might also be able to contact [your] previous employer

and ask for their pension details. Pensions are easy to lose track of when you move jobs, but your previous employer’s HR department will have details of the provider.”

You can also use the government’s free Pension Tracing Service, where you can search your previous employers by name to help find your pension providers’ names and contact details. Money Helper can also give you guidance on how to track down a personal pension.

Becky O’Connor, director of public affairs at PensionBee, suggested ways to avoid having to track down a lost pension: “It’s a good idea to always keep hold of old pension paperwork or, if it is only stored digitally in your emails, create a folder on your computer. It can also be a good idea to tell someone else in your household where all your old pension details are kept. “A misplaced pension does not just affect you, it can affect your family too if you pass away and it gets lost in the ether. Remember to update past pension providers of a change of address as well as present ones. You could also consider consolidating your pension pots to make it easier to keep track of them. ‘’

Lost ISAs and savings accounts

A fifth of UK savers have lost £50,000 or more in savings accounts while a fifth have lost £50,000 or

22 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JUNE 2023

more in Isas, according to Netwealth. You can trace lost or dormant bank and savings accounts using the My Lost Account service, which is run by the British Bankers’ Association, Building Societies Association and National Savings and Investments (NS&I). All you need to do is complete one online form free of charge. You could also try a free service called Gretel that launched in April and aims to replicate Experian’s Unclaimed Asset Register, which closed last year. Gretel can be used to search for lost bank accounts, pensions, life insurance policies and child trust funds.

Lost shares and premium bonds

UK financial organisations hold £2.8bn in forgotten or unclaimed investments, according to Gretel. You could lose track of investments because the company managing them stopped trading or merged, your independent financial adviser (IFA) has shut down, or changes in your own life such as house moves, marriage or divorce.

If you have company shares but have lost your share certificate, you can contact the company to request a replacement. You can also apply to a company registrar such as Capita Registrars, Computershare and Equiniti, which will search their records and give you a replacement certificate in exchange for a fee. Another way to track down investments such as funds is through the Investment Association’s Unclaimed Assets Portal.

If you have lost premium bonds and want to find them, you can use My Lost Account, which searches for NS&I accounts, including premium bonds. Or you can use NS&I’s tracing request form to trace premium bonds or other NS&I products, such as savings certificates, accounts and Isas. Ransom said “savers should keep their different accounts and pensions tracked in a single, accessible place, where they can visualise their overall holdings and valuations.”

Five Minutes With:

WL: Can you explain who and what is Sarvanga Yoga?

R: Sarvanga Yoga Studio is a small, independent yoga and well-being studio located at Holme Grange Craft Village in Wokingham. Sarvanga started out as just me, Rebecca, about 9 years ago teaching solo. I opened the first studio at Holme Grange in 2017 and then in 2019 expanded to welcome other teachers and practitioners into the team. Today we have classes seven days a week including yoga, pilates and qigong classes, along with pregnancy yoga. We also offer regular and occasional events such as monthly gong and sound healing ceremonies, relaxation evenings, meditation, kirtan (chanting), kundalini activations, yoga nidra hosted by a variety of local, national and international practitioners.

WL: What does the word ‘Sarvanga’ mean?

R: Sarvanga is a Sanskrit word translated to “all limbs” or whole body”. In yoga we have the Eight Limbs - Yama (moral disciplines such as honesty and non-violence), Niyama (personal observances such as cleanliness and spiritual study), Asana (physical

postures, this is the aspect of yoga most widely known through modern postural yoga classes), Pranayama (breathwork), Pratyahara (sense withdrawal, a stage of preparation for meditation), Dharana (focused concentration), Dhyana (meditative absorption) and Samadhi (bliss, or enlightenment).

There are also many paths and traditions encompassed by the word Yoga. I wanted a name which intentionally honoured and embraced the fact that yoga is so much more than a way to exercise, more than a simply physical experience.

WL: Who can join Sarvanga, and do you need to have experience?

R: Anyone can join! No experience is needed. We have yoga classes to suit all levels from complete beginners and up. Whilst *we* offer memberships these aren’t necessary, we welcome pay-as-you-go bookings too.

WL: Why did you become a yoga teacher?

R: Love of the practice, the rich philosophy and

24 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JUNE 2023

history behind it, and the benefits I’d found from it in my own life. I knew it was something i wanted to dedicate myself to in a way which allowed me to share my passion with others.

WL: You have partnerships with other teachers, therapists and trainers, how did this develop?

R: I started off as a freelance teacher but with the studio I had the opportunity to provide a space for others to share their knowledge and skills. I strongly believe yoga is not a one-size-fits-all practice, other teachers have so much to share, I wanted our community here to be able to find someone who “fits” them, and to be able to experience a range of teaching styles and to be able to explore other complementary well-being experiences here under one roof.

WL: What do you like best about Holme Grange craft village, and Wokingham?

R: I love that Wokingham has a strong sense of community and a huge interest is the well-being

world. There’s a lot of spiritual curiosity here too, people who are open to learning and exploring new ideas. The craft village is such a peaceful setting for the studio, and has its own sense of community with so many lovely small businesses gathered here.

WL: What is your future ambition for Sarvanga?

R: I would love to Sarvanga to continue to grow and thrive. It’s been a hard road keeping the space going through the pandemic, and I’m only recently back part-time from my maternity leave so there is so much catching up to do! We’ve recently added Reiki shares and trainings to our offering and I’m always speaking with my team and other practitioners about new events, workshops or classes we could offer here. I would truly love Sarvanga to be able to give back to the wonderful community that surrounds and supports us. The studio is a work in progress, ever evolving!

Thank you for your time Rebecca, and we wish you all the best for the future.

ROYAL ASCOT

20th to 24th June 2023 | ‘LEAVE THE EVERYDAY AT THE GATES’

From 20 – 24 June, thrill seekers and racegoers will come together to escape the ordinary and indulge in a week of celebration at Royal Ascot. Steeped in history, the illustrious event sets the stage for world-class horse racing in all its joy, igniting passions and inspiring new generations to leave their everyday at the door.

Race-goers watch on as world-class thoroughbreds thunder towards glory in the tranquil surroundings of the English countryside. Whether you’re savouring a champagne picnic on the vast trackside lawns or donning your most extravagant headpiece at the Bandstand, you can experience the undeniable charm of Royal Ascot’s unique enclosures this summer.

THE ROYAL ENCLOSURE

The origins of the Royal Enclosure can be traced back to 1807 when an area was reserved exclusively for family, guests and the Household of King George III to view the first running of the Gold Cup. The Royal Enclosure as we know it today was established in the mid-nineteenth century when the Emperor of Russia, Nicholas I, visited Ascot for the first time as a guest of Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert. The Royal Enclosure

QUEEN ANNE ENCLOSURE

The Queen Anne Enclosure is a premier public enclosure, at the heart of the action. There is a spectacular view of the Royal Procession and the horses before and after each race from the Parade Ring steppings. Racegoers can enjoy a stroll through the enclosure’s beautifully manicured lawns or stop for a bite to eat or a glass of Champagne at one of the many elegant Champagne bars.

VILLAGE ENCLOSURE

A day in the Village Enclosure is a whirlwind of excitement and colour with live music extending into the evening long after the horses go home. COACHES

The Clean & Green Travel Option

Whether you’re travelling to work every day, planning a holiday or a longer trip across the country, there are lots of aspects to consider when it comes to transport. You want to arrive in comfort, on time and without spending a small fortune but are there other factors that you need to consider too?

The method of travel we choose has a significant effect on the environment; choosing the greenest possible option can help to protect the planet. Therefore, before you automatically climb behind the wheel of your car, stop and think about whether travelling by coach would be a better option. To celebrate World Earth day recently we thought we would share the benefits travelling by coach has on the environment.

More passengers per trip

It can be easy to assume that because a car uses less fuel than a coach it must be more eco-friendly, but it’s not just the amount of fuel and the distance covered – the number of passengers

30 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JUNE 2023

which could travel needs to be taken into account too. For example, a car that only uses a quarter of the fuel that a bus does might seem on first glance to be the eco-friendliest. However, if it can only carry four people rather than 80, it’s actually the bus which is the greener option.

More buses, fewer cars = less congestion

Congested roads where traffic doesn’t easily move leads to pollution due to more fuel being burnt and a greater number of gases being emitted. Being able to transport more passengers in a smaller area, without causing cramped conditions, means more space is freed up for other vehicles to move around. On average, one coach can take up to 50 cars off the road per trip!

Other personal benefits

Even though travelling by bus or coach is beneficial for the environment, it has other benefits too. You avoid the hassle and cost of parking, have more time to catch up on work or your favourite

tv shows without having to waste time driving to your destination. With the cost of fuel increasing as well as insurance and maintenance it can work out economically better to travel by coach.

Is travelling by coach really better than by car?

The exact amount of fuel that a car burns depends on the manufacturer, model and engine size so it’s not a one-size-fits-all answer. However, regardless of the car, it will use less fuel per journey than a bus or a train. The problem is that as a car is only capable of carrying a very limited amount of people, it’s at a real disadvantage in pretty much every other area. Quite aside from taking up more space per person, and using more fuel per passenger, when it comes to the most telling statistic – the wholecycle of energy – cars are about twice less energy efficient too.

Therefore, although it’s possible to choose an eco-friendly car, compared to other forms of transport, it’s not a green choice.

RENOVATE & RESTYLE

As well as being a busy time designing for my lovely Jessica Cox Design clients, there has been a lot of renovation work behind the scenes at my own home too, with extensions, new kitchens, bathrooms, and some landscaping too.

It’s a process that is known to negatively affect well-being (statistics showing 60% of the time) with a kitchen renovation topping the surveys as the most stressful part. I am very fortunate in that I do enjoy the whole process and the excitement of finished projects is enough to help me through –but it doesn’t take away from the fact it is a messy and difficult way to live. I’ve got some before and afters of some of the spaces at home to share with you, as well as some tips on how to manage some of that stress when you have work being completed at home!

Starting with the space that makes the most difference to my day to day working – my office. The work here included replacing the floor joists, reinstalling a fireplace to match the Edwardian period of the house, plastering, new electrics, bespoke joinery, decoration and lighting. A place to house all my samples, project information and space for scheming:

Part of the initial process, while we waited for the planning permission to come through, was to work on some of the spaces that wouldn’t have any structural changes – so for us this meant some of the bedrooms upstairs. Being able to start with these was great, because it meant we had a lovely, finished space to go to at the end of the day (once all the concrete dust was washed off). We replastered, added plug sockets, sanded back the floorboards, added new woodwork and decorated.

33 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JUNE 2023

Some tips to help navigate a renovation or extension at home: Consult a professional - Other than the professional trades or suppliers that will be completing any physical work, consider speaking to a designer or interior architect at the start of the project. Although it can seem like an additional expense, it could end up saving you a lot in the long run, as they will be able to set out a project timeline to make sure all areas are tackled in the

right order – and can make suggestions or changes before a project starts, to make sure it works best for you. I recently saved a client thousands of pounds by altering the bathroom layout –all from an hour’s consultation! Break it down - If you are tackling the work or some of the renovation yourself, break it down into a list of action points. Writing down tasks will enable you to prioritise them and sort which things need to be done before you can progress to the next. Clean as you go - It may seem like a pointless task to tidy and clean a building site environment, but it makes the end clean less overwhelming, and a tidy workspace means you know where everything is so you can find it easily on a new day. Keep some rubber buckets lined with a rubble sack (extra strong bin liner) nearby to fill as you go and sort all the recyclable materials into separate areas. Building dust gets ‘everywhere’ so remember to tape up gaps and keep doors closed to keep it to a minimum.

Embrace it! - It may seem stressful (and never ending) but imagine the end space and how amazing it will be, and remember this is just the process to get there. See the takeaway dinners as a temporary treat and make sure you spend some time choosing the finishing touches – buy the towels ready for the completed bathroom or the fancy new saucepan for that first dinner in the new kitchen.

The ‘little’ details

And some extra tips from many years of renovation experience:

• Label up your paint tins – with room names and the dates you bought them (it does have a shelf life when opened)

• Organise and label up storage boxes by rooms and keep a ‘day to day’ storage box nearby with the daily use items so you always know where they are.

• Keep a folder for each project – somewhere to keep inspiration pictures, your task lists and receipts all in one place.

Clean & Green

I’m Abbie Bell, owner and founder of a new local business, Click Style Limited. We are a family run, ecommerce brand specialising in luxurious and stylish signature pieces for your home and business. We partner with some amazing designers who travel the world searching for the next must haves in homeware. The products we supply enable our customers access to high quality, competitive and stunning interior goods https://clickstyle.co.uk/

Sustainability matters to us at Click Style but we know that being sustainable isn’t just about products, it’s about the impact we have on the environment as a whole. We take action for our planet through tree planting and carbon offsetting.

The term Carbon Offsetting gets thrown around a lot these days, but what does it actually mean?

Simply put, it’s a way of balancing out the carbon emissions we produce by investing in projects that reduce carbon in the atmosphere. Ecologi make it easy for businesses to take action for our planet through tree planting, renewable energy and conservation projects. They are also transparent about the impact of their projects, so we know exactly where our money is going and how it’s making a difference.

Ethy is an independent organisation that assesses the environmental and social impact of companies, using a rigorous set of criteria. Getting verified by Ethy is no small feat but we are so proud to have achieved it on our three month anniversary of Click Style’s launch. For us, it shows our customers we are serious about being environmentally responsible and not just greenwashing!

It’s great to feel good about doing our part for the planet, however, there are business benefits for sustainability too. Customers these days are looking for companies that are socially and environmentally responsible. They want to support businesses that care about the world we live in.

By partnering with Ecologi and Ethy, we are showing our customers that we don’t just talk the talk, we walk the walk too.

When launching Click Style we felt strongly about trying our best to do the right thing from the outset. We are a brand new business, or as we like to call ourselves ‘an embryo business’, but we are already working towards our Sustainable Development Goals for the future.

Being a sustainable business isn’t always easy. There are challenges we face every day, from sourcing materials to shipping products. We believe that the benefits of being sustainable far outweigh the challenges. We are not alone, more and more businesses are realising that sustainability isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s a musthave. If you are a business and want to make a difference too, then I have a few words of advice. Look for companies that are transparent about their environmental impact, that are doing something to reduce their carbon footprint and who care about the world we live in. In the end, we’re all in this together. We all share this beautiful planet and the amazing area of Wokingham

GARDEN STYLES

TO GET YOU INSPIRED...

Charlotte of ‘Sophie Sews’ explains how now is the time to start thinking about how you would like your garden to look for the forthcoming Summer months. Whether your exterior home style is rustic or colourful, big budget or small, we’ve whittled down a list of our favourite garden styles to get you inspired…

RUSTIC CHARM

Think stone, wicker and a neutral colour palette, a rustic outdoor space keeps the furniture to a minimalist style allowing for nature to be the star of your garden. To add to this relaxed and minimalist feel, we suggest accessorising with lanterns, hurricanes and candle holders made of natural materials to add soft lighting to your outdoor space. To add those finishing touches to your outdoor dining set, why not pick fresh flowers from your garden and create a beautifully rustic floral arrangement.

MAKE NEW AND MEND

The trend of reusing and recycling is one we’re sure you’ve heard of, so if you’ve got a gorgeous outdoor seating area that looks a little worse for wear, instead of buying brand new, why not have your seat and cushion covers reupholstered! Whether you’re wanting plain and simple, or bold and extravagant, there is a wide variety of outdoor fabrics now available which are perfect for any seating area needing a new year refresh.

38 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JUNE 2023

COLOUR!

This trend may just be our favourite… A rise in the popularity of using colour both indoors and outside is certainly a trend we can get on board with. If large, bold, colour statements seem a bit daunting, we recommend starting small with scatter cushions

which could pick out an accent colour from the plants in your garden. If you’re wanting to go bolder, why not create a colourful patio or balcony with a patterned outdoor rug, paired with garden chairs and cushions of complimenting colours.

Lushy Bespoke Garden Spaces is a family run business, specialising in creating up market outdoor spaces designed around your needs and wishes!

We can design and build your perfect garden space, from an invigorating gym, or perfectly appointed office space, an oasis of calm for your salon, or the perfect garden bar, the possibilities are endless!

WILDLIFE IN JUNE

Wildlife to look out for in June by Kate Titford of the Wildlife Trust

Look out for these species in your garden and local green spaces this month...

Elderflowers

Masses of frothy white flowerheads cover elder trees in June. The flowers provide nectar for a variety of insects, and their sweet scent is unmistakable as you walk past. Later in the year the masses of dark berries are eaten by birds and small mammals. It was once believed that elder trees warded off evil spirits or witches, so they were planted near houses to keep them safe!

Pyramidal orchids

Pyramidal orchids are fairly widespread in the UK. You often see them growing in roadside verges (another good reason to stop mowing!)

as well as chalk grassland, their more typical habitat, so look out for them coming into flower this month. The flower spikes have a distinctive pyramidal shape, made up of many individual flowers ranging in colour from pale to deep pink. These orchids are pollinated by day- and nightflying moths, and butterflies.

Speckled wood

Speckled wood butterflies are fairly common, look for them flying in dappled sunlight in woodland. The adult butterflies rarely feed on flowers, instead they feed on honeydew, which is a sweet liquid produced by aphids.

40 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JUNE 2023
Kestrel

Otter

Keep an eye out for otters if you’re near a river this summer. You may be lucky to catch a glimpse of them swimming past or spot their spraint, which is said to smell like jasmine tea (if you get that close)!

Knapweed

Knapweed should be coming into flower this month, adding a splash of pink and purple to meadows, grassland, and even road verges and some gardens that have been left uncut. This thistlelike plant is a great source of nectar for insects, and later in the year the seeds provide food for birds.

The red admiral is an unmistakeable garden visitor. This black and red beauty may be seen feeding on flowers on warm days all year-round. Adults are mostly migrants from north Africa and continental Europe so sightings are most common in summer months, but some do hibernate here.

Stag beetles

Look out for stag beetles flying around on warm evenings in June. These are one of our largest beetles. They’re named after the males’ large jaws, which are said to resemble the antlers of a stag.

Our customers have come to rely on us for being honest and knowledgeable in our field and we have a long list of domestic and commercial clients to show for it. If you want to find out more about what we can do for you, why not take a look at some examples of our work on our website www.thamesvalleyarborists.com

Whether you need us to remove a single tree, your whole back garden needs an overhaul or you have a commercial property which needs ongoing work, Thames Valley Arborists can help. Please feel free to contact us to book in for a free, no-obligation consultation with one of our experienced tree surgeons.

At Thames Valley Arborists we really do love what we do and we believe that our work reflects this passion. As well as being professional, fully qualified and of course insured, we’re also an incredibly friendly bunch.

The adults are short-lived (no more than a couple of months) but their larvae spend several years hidden underground where they feed on rotting wood. Look for them on woodland edges, in hedgerows, parks and gardens.

Southern hawkers

Southern hawkers are large dragonflies, which emerge from ponds as adults from June onwards. You may see them flying right through into the autumn if the weather is good enough. They are a common dragonfly of ponds, lakes and canals, particularly near to woodland. Hawkers are the largest and fastest-flying dragonflies; they hover, catch their insect-prey mid-air, and can even fly backwards!

Baby birds and fledglings

You might notice baby birds and fledglings around this month. It is normal for some fledglings to spend a few days on the ground. Their parents are

usually nearby keeping a watchful eye so you don’t need to do anything for them, however, if you have cats, keep them inside until the birds have gone.

SUSTAINABLE BBQS

from ethically sourced meat to UK-grown charcoal. Read on for tips on how to host a sustainable barbecue.

Buy meat and fish from local, sustainable producers

If you’re going to be barbecuing meat and fish, consider where you’re getting it from. Eating local is always better for the environment –particularly for us, as British farmers are leading the way in sustainable food production. According to the Government’s Committee on Climate Change, greenhouse gas emissions from UK beef are about half the global average –and by 2040, British farmers are hoping to reach net zero emissions.

We should be choosing pasture-raised, grassfed meat instead of intensively farmed, mass

too – you’ll be able to find these at Stefan’s butchers, just ask Charlie.

A GUIDE TO GREEN GRILLING!

Avoid pre-packaged and ready-prepared food

While the pre-marinaded barbecue section is always appealing, these products often come in rigid plastics which can’t be recycled. Instead, why not make your own burgers? Make meat go further by mixing minced meat with vegetables and grains.

Invest in a good BBQ and good fuel

Your choice of barbecue is also important. Avoid single-use foil barbecues, which are made from cheap materials and are nearly impossible to recycle. Rather, invest in something high-quality that will last for a long time. While charcoal grills will get you that distinctive barbecue flavour, charcoal releases around three times the amount of greenhouse gases than gas grills. Your best bet is an outdoor electric grill, ideally powered by renewable energy.

If you are using charcoal, choose a UKgrown, sustainably sourced variety. Lots of charcoal you buy on the high street is made from unsustainable wood and has chemicals added. The Oxford Charcoal Company, on the other hand, sources 98 per cent of its wood from Forestry Commission-approved woodland. Look out for the ‘Grown in Britain’ symbol. And in terms of firelighters, opt for wood-based, electric or natural instead of petrol-based.

Avoid food waste

As a host it’s clearly important to ensure there’s enough food to go around, but don’t over-do it. Take orders from guests in advance to give you an idea of what’s going to be the most popular –and if you do end up with a surplus, let people take it home in reusable containers.

Keep the lid on your grill

Next up: the actual cooking. Make sure you keep the lid on your grill while your dishes are grilling away – not only will everything cook faster and more evenly, you’ll use less fuel. If you have a gas barbecue, ensure you’re turning the heat down when you’re not using it.

Include meat-free options

A barbecue need not be all about the meat. Balance things out with some plant-based options such as veggie kebabs, grilled corn and portobello mushrooms, plus side salads. There are a whole host of great meat-free burgers nowadays too, including patties designed to mimic the texture and taste of red meat, such as plant-based brand Beyond Meat.

Steer clear of single-use plastics

Naturally, single-use plastics should be avoided. If you’re worried about your kitchen crockery getting smashed, invest in some bamboo bowls and cutlery – bamboo is the world’s fastest growing plant. Ensure you place a ban on plastic straws, and opt for reusable napkins.

THE IDEAL TREAT FOR FATHER’S DAY

Steak Sandwich

Ingredients:

For the pickled onions

1 cup distilled white vinegar

1 cup water

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1 medium red onion, halved and thinly sliced

For the steak

Cooking spray

1 pound sirloin steak

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

For the sandwiches

1/3 cup mayonnaise

1/4 cup whole-grain mustard

1 1/2 cups arugula

4 onion rolls, sliced in half lengthwise

Method:

Make the pickled onions

Place the vinegar, water, sugar, and salt in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar. Place the onion in a heatproof bowl and pour the pickling liquid over it; set aside while you cook the steak.

Grill the steak

Arrange a rack about 4 inches from the grill and turn the heat to high. Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil. Coat a wire rack with cooking spray and fit over the baking sheet.

Pat the steak dry with a paper towel. Season both sides with the salt and pepper and place on the wire rack. Grill for 5 minutes. Flip the steak and continue grilling until well-browned and charred at the edges, 4 to 5 minutes more for medium-rare, or 6 to 7 minutes more for medium. Let the steak rest for 10 minutes on the rack.

Assemble the sandwiches

Whisk the mayonnaise and mustard together in a small bowl. Drain the onions through a fine-mesh strainer and discard the liquid. Transfer the steak to a cutting board and thinly slice across the grain.

Spread a thick layer of Dijon mayonnaise on the cut sides of the rolls. Divide the steak and arugula between the rolls and close them to form sandwiches. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Angela Hartnett A One Woman Industry!

Many Britons would consider receiving a medal from the head of state to be the highest honour in the land. But how many people in modern British history can say they have been decorated by two monarchs?

as saying she is a big fan of the Royal family as they do “a great thing for the Country’’.

Making food fit for a King has been on Angela’s mind lately, as the 54 year old is cohost with Nick Grimshaw for the Waitrose podcast ‘Dish’ . The Dish podcast was created by Ravinder Bhogal for Waitrose Food Magazine as part of a range of Coronation recipes.

Angela Hartnett can! In 2007 the chef and restauranteur was presented with her MBE by the late Queen Elizabeth. Then last November she was back to the Palace to receive an OBE from His Majesty King Charles. She has been quoted

Since launching last June, the podcast has welcomed a starry line up of celebrity chefsYotam Ottollenghi and Marcus Wareing, actors David Harewood and Hannah Waddingham, comedians Russell Howard and Jayde Adams and many more to Angela and Nick’s table. From spaghetti alle vongole with Stanley Tucci to Christmas dinner with Hugh Bonneville, the show’s winning mix of good food and good conversation has proved a hit with audiences, earning a prized 4.9 star-rating on Spotify and setting a record for the most consecutive weeks at no 1 on Apple’s food podcast chart.

51 WOKINGHAM LOCAL • JUNE 2023

The show has also seen the start of a beautiful new friendship between ‘Ange and Grimmy’ who have an easy rapport, as they have a lot in common, according to Angela.

Angela can trace her love of food back to her childhood in a family of formidable female cooks. Born in Canterbury to an Irish father and a Welsh Italian mother, whose parents had migrated from Parma to the Rhondda, she was schooled in the art of Italian cooking by her mum, aunts and nonna, who used to make her own pasta.

On leaving school Angela headed off to Cambridge Polytechnic to do a history degree, and got her first taste of a working kitchen at the city’s Free Press pub and Midsummer House restaurant. Following a stint at the Sandy Lane Hotel in Barbados, Angela returned to London and went along to a one day trial at Gordon Ramsey’s first restaurant, Aubergine. Famously, Marcus Wareing (who was sous chef at the time) made a bet with his team that she wouldn’t last two weeks. He quickly ate his words and they have been friends ever since. As for ‘the Boss’ Angela thinks Gordon is brilliant! :He’s incredible at what he does. He gets food. A lot of people give him a hard time, but I wouldn’t be here without Gordon. He really invested in me, and taught me a lot and helped me get my first business. He can be scary, but he is also extraordinarily kind and generous’’ she says.

She also has Gordon Ramsey to thank for her TV career. Since her debut on Hell’s Kitchen, she became a familiar face on the likes of Masterchef, Great British Menu and Best Home Cook.

A one woman industry she may be, but Angela’s OBE wasn’t just for her contribution to Britain’s hospitality sector, it was also in recognition of her work helping to feed frontline NHS staff during the lockdowns.

Angela considers food to be more than what you put on the plate, it’s about the whole environment of sitting around a table, eating with family and friends. Although as everyone from NHS workers to celebrity guests on ‘Dish’ can attest, it probably doesn’t hurt if what you’re eating also tastes sensational!
