WELCOME... Welcome to our Christmas Special edition of Wokingham Local magazine. Our festive season starts with 12 ‘Pratts Pods’ days of Christmas - Rory and his team are ready with help and advice on all things tech, on Elms Walk. Next door at the Authentic Turkish Barbers, Ali and the guys are helping you get ‘party ready’ alongside Primelase and the Lazy Frog on Denmark Street. Our local butcher, Charlie at Stefans, over the road, has all your festive meats ready for orders, so pick up the phone, and he will take care of everything for you. What could be simpler? If you are having time off from cooking, Bombay Story Indian Kitchen for Indian fine-dining on Peach Place, and Chalk on Broad Street have a whole Festive Season of their own, including a Bond themed New Year’s Eve extravaganza. Around the corner on Rose Street we have Ruchetta Italian trattoria for cosy, welcoming family dinners, freshly prepared by Angelo and his team of Italian chefs. And, talking of Italy, we take a trip to Venice, the city of canals and gaze at such wonders as the Bridge of Sighs and St Mark’s Basilica, before checking out Christmas with the animals at London Zoo. We take a good look around Twyford as part of our ‘village life’ regular feature, and find it to have a contemporary vibe, alongside a traditional countryside ambiance, and we celebrate the arrival of a brand new business, Thai Butterfly (a modern Thai restaurant) in the village centre. On our travels we called in at Holme Grange Craft Village where there is a kind of Christmas Magic in the air, and alongside shops and crafts they have several festive events planned. Gayle at Enchanting Glass Designs has a veritable Winter Wonderland, made of glass, which make for ideal Christmas presents. We ask ‘Where’s Santa?’ and I spend Five Minutes with local entrepreneur and photographer, Leanne Du Plessis, as she talks about “living life to the fullest’’. Maybe our festive recipes will give you a few ideas for Christmas lunch and as they say at Dessert Maid - “there is always room for dessert’’, so pop in to see them as you are out and about in the Town centre - they are on Central Walk. Don’t forget to shop local and support our independent local businesses when you are Christmas shopping, Anthony Blay on Rose Street have some fabulous formal and casual menswear, and if it’s something more bespoke you are looking for, then Jonathan at Becker Bespoke will have you enveloped in a warm and comfortable embrace with his winter coats. Well, we have been busy these past few weeks, and what better way to ‘let your hair down’ than celebrate with our family, friends and neighbours, and join in with the festivities at this year’s Winter Carnival, which promises to be bigger and better than ever! TWYFORD THE VILLAGE WITH A CONTEMPORARY VIBE!
Let’s first travel back in time ... Twyford’s history dates back to at least the medieval period when it was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Tuifyrde.” The village’s name is believed to have Anglo-Saxon origins, meaning “two fords” or “double ford.” This suggests that the village was situated near a river crossing. Throughout the medieval period, Twyford was a small agricultural community, and its proximity to water sources made it an attractive place for early settlers. The area was home to several farms and cottages, and the village slowly grew in size and importance. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the village began to experience significant changes. The opening of the Kennet and Avon Canal in 1810 brought increased trade and commerce to the area, facilitating the transportation of goods and materials. This development spurred the growth of local industries and businesses, and Twyford became a more vibrant and prosperous community. The 19th century brought significant changes to Twyford, including the arrival of the Great Western Railway. The railway station, which opened in 1847, connected Twyford to London and Reading, making it a more accessible location for commuters and businesses. This further boosted the village’s growth and brought more visitors to the area. During the Victorian era, Twyford’s population continued to expand, and the village saw the construction of many new homes and schools to accommodate its growing community. The village maintained its rural charm while adapting to the changing times. In the 20th century, Twyford continued to evolve, becoming a commuter hub for people working in London and other nearby towns. The village preserved its historic character, with charming cottages and beautiful green spaces while adapting to the needs of its residents. The latter half of the 20th century brought more modernisation to Twyford. New housing developments, shops, and amenities transformed the village into a thriving suburban community, while still maintaining its essential connection to its history and rural surroundings. 16

Today, Twyford remains a vibrant village with a strong sense of community. The historic buildings and landmarks, including the church, have been preserved, providing a sense of continuity with the past. But there is a lot more to Twyford than that... There is a contemporary vibe which is characterised by its ability to strike a delicate balance between preserving its traditional charm and embracing modern elements. Entrepreneurship and small businesses are thriving, and with the local community supporting them they can inject vibrancy into the area. As a final observation as I head out of the village to the train station, I conclude that Twyford’s history is
a story of evolution and adaptation. From its medieval origins through the industrial and transportation revolutions of the 19th century to its modern role as a commuter village, Twyford has managed to balance its historic charm with the demands of the present. Its rich history is a testament to the enduring spirit of the village and its people, who I can absolutely say without doubt are friendly, welcoming and if, like me, you happen across the The Golden Cross pub when the sun is shining, then I recommend you call in, order a refreshing cider and have a chill in their beautiful beer garden.

CHRISTMAS AT LONDON ZOO London Zoo, located in Regent’s Park, is one of the world’s oldest and most renowned zoological gardens. It was established in 1828, making it the world’s first scientific zoo, and opened its doors to the public in 1847. The zoo was founded by the Zoological Society of London, whose mission was to advance the study of zoology and provide a place for scientific research and public education. Throughout its history, London Zoo has played a significant role in the development of modern zoology and the conservation of endangered species. It has been home to a wide variety of animals, and its collection has grown over the years to include numerous species from around the world. The zoo’s early years were marked by a focus on collecting and studying animals, but it has evolved to prioritise animal welfare, conservation, and education. London Zoo has been involved in various breeding and conservation programs, WOKINGHAM LOCAL • DECEMBER 2023
contributing to the survival of endangered species. We take a closer look at what is happening today, as our team at Wokingham Local (together with younger family members) visit London Zoo just before the holiday season. An absolute firm favourite was Pengiun Beach, the home of Humboldts Penguins.
Humboldts are medium-sized penguins.
They have black heads with a white stripe on either side and pink skin around their eyes and base of the 21
bill. Here are just a few facts - These penguins need to lose heat, rather than conserve it; bare patches beside their bills and large wings help do this. Humboldt penguins preen themselves and other members of the colony; they gather oil from a gland in their tail and apply it to their feathers like a gel. They never chew with their mouth open because they don’t chew at all! Instead they swallow their fish head first. A Humboldt penguin can reach up to 30 miles per hour in the water! Did you know, that penguins can’t fly? On land they are known and loved for their clumsy waddles – but when it comes to swimming, they gracefully “fly” through the water.

Entering the Giraffe House, you find yourself inside the only Victorian building at London Zoo that’s still used for its original purpose – providing a comfortable home for their tallest residents! In the early hours of 25 May 1836, a remarkable procession took place through the streets of London. Four young giraffes were walked by their attendants from the docks at Blackwall to the Zoo in Regent’s Park, accompanied by a police escort to keep the roads clear. The three males and one female (known as Selim, Mabrouk, Guib-allah and Zaida) had been transported from Sudan by a French trader, Monsieur Thibaut. They were not only the Zoo’s first giraffes, but virtually the first of their species to be seen in England. Their sole predecessor was a female giraffe that had been given to George IV and lived briefly in the royal menagerie at Windsor. Not surprisingly, the giraffes’ arrival at the Zoo caused a public sensation, and providing these new residents with suitable accommodation was a priority. On arrival, the group was initially housed in an elephant barn, but the new Giraffe House was completed for them in June 1837. East and west wings were added to the building 12 years later. The east wing housed the Zoo’s famous hippopotamus Obaysch – the first hippo ever seen in England – and the west wing accommodated eland antelopes, and later, zebras. 22

it was built, the Giraffe House has rarely been unoccupied. Despite the extensive intervening renovations, it retains a number of original features, including its distinctive tall, rounded stable doors. Now Grade II listed, the Giraffe House is one of the oldest zoo buildings in the world that is still used to house its intended residents.

Venice has long been a captivating tourist destination for the past century, attracting visitors with its unique blend of history, culture, and breathtaking beauty. Its appeal lies in its iconic canals, stunning architecture, and rich artistic heritage. Over the last 100 years, Venice has evolved as a thriving tourist hub, undergoing both challenges and transformations. In the early 20th century, Venice’s allure as a tourist destination was already well-established. The city’s timeless charm drew writers, artists, and intellectuals, including Ernest Hemingway and Thomas Mann. The Grand Canal and St. Mark’s Square were major draws, as visitors explored the intricate waterways and admired the city’s Gothic and Renaissance architecture. During the mid-20th century, Venice faced challenges related to flooding and infrastructure 32

decay. The notorious acqua alta, or high water, threatened the city, and efforts to mitigate this issue led to the construction of the MOSE project, a series of movable barriers designed to protect the lagoon. Despite these challenges, tourists continued to flock to Venice, enchanted by its beauty and unique atmosphere. Let’s take a look at a couple of the most famous landmarks. The Bridge of Sighs is an iconic structure in Venice, Italy, known for its exquisite architecture and rich history. Built in 1602, this arched limestone bridge connects the Doge’s Palace to the city’s historic prison. The name “Bridge of Sighs” comes from the belief that prisoners would sigh as they crossed it, taking their last glimpse of the beautiful city before imprisonment. This enchanting bridge is a symbol of both freedom and captivity, capturing the duality of human experience. Its delicate tracery and ornate details make it a favorite spot for tourists, offering breathtaking views of the canals and Venice’s timeless charm. St. Mark’s Basilica is an iconic and historic church renowned for its stunning architecture and rich cultural significance. Built in the 9th century, it showcases a unique blend of Byzantine and Gothic architectural styles. The basilica’s exterior features intricate mosaics and sculptures, while the interior boasts a wealth of golden mosaics, marble columns, and exquisite artwork. The church has played a central role in Venetian history, serving as a symbol of the city’s wealth and power during its maritime heyday. Today, it remains a must-visit attraction for tourists and a testament to Venice’s grandeur. The late 20th century saw an increase in tourism as international travel became more accessible. Venice’s appeal as a romantic and historic destination grew, with tourists from around the world coming to experience gondola rides, explore the intricate alleyways, and enjoy Venetian cuisine. The city became a symbol of Italy’s cultural heritage, a place where art, music, and history converged. However, this surge in tourism brought its own set of issues. The sheer volume of visitors put immense pressure on Venice’s infrastructure, leading to overcrowding and straining the delicate balance between preserving the city’s heritage and catering to tourists. move away from the city center due to rising living costs and changes in the local economy, which became heavily reliant on tourism. In recent years, the 21st century has witnessed a push for sustainable tourism in Venice. Local authorities and organisations have sought to address the challenges posed by mass tourism while preserving the city’s unique character. Regulations have been put in place to control visitor numbers, such as limiting cruise ship access to the city center, imposing fines on those who swim in the canals, and encouraging responsible travel. Venice has also adapted to the changing demands of tourists. While its classic attractions remain popular, there’s a 34
growing interest in experiencing the city beyond the well-trodden paths. Travelers are seeking authentic local experiences, from attending traditional Venetian festivals to exploring the less-visited districts like Cannaregio and Dorsoduro. Cannaregio is one of the six historic districts, or sestieri, in Venice, and where we chose to stay during our visit. Located in the northern part of the city, it offers a unique and authentic Venetian experience away from the bustling tourist crowds. The district is known for its picturesque canals, charming bridges, and historic architecture. Cannaregio is home to the famous Venetian Ghetto, one of the world’s first ghettos for Jewish residents, with a rich history and cultural significance. The neighborhood boasts the stunning Ca’ d’Oro, a Venetian Gothic palace turned museum, and the vibrant Strada Nova, a bustling street lined with shops, restaurants, and cafes. You can explore the peaceful canals, historic churches, and local markets, immersing themselves in the daily life of Venetians. Cannaregio offers a quieter, more authentic side of Venice, making it a captivating destination for travelers seeking a genuine Venetian experience. Cultural events and art exhibitions, like the Venice Biennale, continue to draw a global audience, showcasing the city’s enduring relevance in the world of art and culture. Furthermore, the preservation of Venice’s architectural heritage remains a priority, with ongoing efforts to restore and maintain historic buildings and landmarks. The culinary scene has also evolved, with a greater emphasis on authentic Venetian cuisine. Visitors can savor fresh seafood, cicchetti (Venetian tapas), and regional wines at traditional bacari (wine bars), immersing themselves in the local food culture. Venice’s role as a tourist destination over the last century reflects the delicate balance between the preservation of its rich heritage and the demands of a global tourism industry. While the city has faced challenges like overcrowding and environmental concerns, it has also adapted and evolved. So what I discovered on my recent trip is that Venice strives to offer an authentic and sustainable experience embracing its unique history, its culture, and its artistic legacy. Christmas Canapés Begin your Christmas feast with these bitesized prawn & spiced yoghurt pappadums and cucumber bites, both of which are also fabulously tasy canapes for your festive parties.
For the prawn pappadums 200g (3/4 cup) Greek-style natural yoghurt 1 1/2 tbsp mango chutney, 1 tsp Lime Pickle 1 cucumber, finely chopped 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander 1 small fresh red chilli, thinly sliced 20 mini pappadums 20 (about 350g) small cooked and peeled prawns
Method: It couldn’t be simpler; combine the yoghurt, mango chutney and lime pickle in a bowl. Then in a seperate bowl, combine the cucumber, coriander and chilli. Assemble with a teaspoon of yoghurt mixture on to the pappadums, and top with the prawns and cucumber mixture, and serve. Delicious.
For the cucumber bites
2 cucumbers, 1 avocado, stoned, peeled 80g marinated feta, drained, 1 tbsp thyme leaves 1 tbsp chopped chives, 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp finely grated lemon rind, 1 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp baby capers, drained
Method: Cut cucumbers into 2-3cm slices and scoop about half the seeds from the centre of each cucumber slice to make a cavity. Then place the avocado, feta, thyme leaves, chives and lemon rind in a food processor. Process until almost smooth, add the lemon juice and process again, then season. Pipe or spoon the mixture into the cavity. Briefly fry the capers in hot oil for 3 or minutes and drain before sprinking over the cucumber bites.

Golden, succulent turkey, seasoned, roasted, and served with holiday cheer! Ingredients: 1 onion, quartered, fresh bay leaves - to flavour and serve, 4.5-5.6kg/10-12lb Bronze turkey giblets removed, 1 quantity of stuffing, 85g butter, softened, 1 whole nutmeg, 10 rashers streaky bacon, 1 glass red wine - Merlot works well
Method: Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Put the onion and a large sprig of bay in the cavity between the legs. If using stuffing, pack half into the neck end, pushing it towards the breast. Weigh the turkey and calculate cooking time at 20 mins per kilo, plus 90 mins. Put a large sheet of extra-wide foil in a large roasting tin, then put the turkey on top. Smear the breast with the butter, grate over half the nutmeg and season well. Cover the breast with bacon, pour over the wine, then cover with foil. Roast in the oven, then 90 mins before the end of cooking, open the foil, discard the bacon, and drain off excess fat from the tin. Leaving the foil open, return the turkey to the oven to brown, basting with the juices several times. 30 mins before the end of cooking, place stuffing of your choice around the turkey. To test whether the turkey is cooked, push a skewer into the thickest part of the thigh – the juices should run clear. Transfer the turkey and stuffing to a platter, cover with foil, then a couple of tea towels and allow to rest for up to 30 mins before carving. This gives the juices time to settle back into the meat, ensuring that the turkey will be juicy. Garnish with sprigs of bay. Melt the butter over a medium heat, add the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute. Gradually add the milk, whisking well, until you have a smooth sauce. Continue to |cook over a medium–low heat, stirring often, until the sauce has thickened slightly. Remove from the heat, add the grated cheese and mustard, a pinch of salt and some black pepper. Stir until the cheese is melted and well combined. Pour the cheese sauce over the broccoli and bake for 20–25 minutes, until the sauce is bubbling with golden patches on top.

The Christmas Cocktail - Chai Espresso Martini We are celebrating the holiday season with this cozy Chai Espresso Martini. Homemade vanilla chai and honey simple syrup, mixed with the classic espresso martini ingredients of vodka, Kahlúa, and a shot of espresso. A shot of coconut milk makes the drink a touch creamy and just that much more delicious. This is the perfect subtle twist on the classic espresso martini cocktail. It’s a delicious festive treat to cap off the night. The chai syrup is the extra special holiday touch to this martini. It’s also so simple to make. You basically brew chai tea, then add honey and vanilla to create a simple syrup. The syrup will make enough for about six cocktails. This is awesome to have on
hand for anyunannounced guests… or if you just want to make yourself a fancy holiday martini. It’s not too sweet, perfectly spiced with warming flavors of chai, and just lightly hinted with vanilla. Shake the chai honey syrup with vodka, Kahlúa, a shot of espresso, and a shot of coconut milk. You’ll get a sweet martini with just the right amount of espresso, hints of vanilla, and a little creaminess too. Oh so GOOD! The key to a good espresso martini is all in that frothy top. I know it might seem like a hard thing to achieve, but it’s actually very easy. You just need to really shake the drink together with ice for a good minute to create the froth. The harder you shake, the more froth you’ll get.

Five Minutes With: Jacqui Priestley spends 5 Minutes with Leanne du Plessis Entrepreneur, Business Owner & Photographer WL: When did you know you wanted to become a business owner and entrepreneur? L: It wasn’t so much as wanting to become a business owner, it was more I wanted to be a full-time photographer. And unless you have your own business, the pay for a photographer is less than a shop cashier. So if I was going to quit my London job, it had to be for equal or better pay (because the bills still need to be paid) and the only way to do this was have my own photography business. Almost 7 years as full-time photographer and I wouldn’t have it any other way. WL: When and how did you become a photographer? L: My interest in photography started in my teen years. Living in South Africa, the sunsets are stunning. I loved sunsets, still do. And I wanted to capture their radiance and beauty, so I started taking photos of them. I’d climb onto the roof of the house for a better perspective and take my shot. At that time, there were no digital cameras, 42
just film, and I still have some of the prints to this day. My photography work has come on much more since those days though. Once I had my first son, I wanted to capture the same as I did with sunsets and not miss anything. My love of newborn, baby and family photography grew from there. I’ve since done many training courses and diplomas to get where I am today. WL: How do you come up with new ideas for your business? L: Pinterest, magazines, Instagram and adapting to make the image my own. WL: Who is your biggest inspiration? L: It’s not one person, but rather a number of people that have inspired me over the years. People who give their time to help others and expect nothing in return. I’ve been lucky enough to meet a few people like this in my time and it inspires me to be the best that I can be, so that one day I can pay it forward. WOKINGHAM LOCAL • DECEMBER 2023
WL: What motivates you? L: Seeing the smiles and happy tears on client’s faces when they see their images. Being able to capture their personalities and emotional connections between each other in a photo. Capturing memories for people and seeing their expressions is priceless. WL: What is the best piece of advice you have been given? L: As a new mum, make sure you eat your favourite bits of food on your plate first, because once your child starts eating, guaranteed they will after what you are saving. As a photographer, you are not in the photography business, you are in the business of photography. Basically pretty pictures aren’t going to make your business succeed, it’s knowing how to do business that will make you succeed.

Writing didn’t happen, but I’m so grateful for the path that I’m currently on. WL: What is your future ambition? WHERE TO PUT YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE?
Christmas is one of the most cherished times in our yearly calendar, when everyone comes together and catches up with family and friends: However, I always find at Christmas time that homes are required to become even more multi-purpose than they already are. Where to put the grandparents? Where should the Christmas tree go, and how many people need to be seated around the dining table? When looking at a home renovation for our clients one of the questions that I always put to them is where will your Christmas tree or trees go? The answer is the room where you spend the most of your time as a family. This used to be the sitting room, but as our ways of living have changed over time this room now tends to be the open plan kitchen, dining area and snug. We even ensure that there is a handy socket ready for the occasion. Decorating your house and Christmas tree is a tradition for each of us and a great time to get the family together young and old, to relive this tradition. Helped with mince pies, mulled wine, and hot chocolate. It doesn’t matter what goes on your tree, the important thing is getting everyone involved with the decoration. I also find at this time that the hamster must move to the bathroom and the children’s play kitchen needs to move to a bedroom; to make space for the Christmas tree, additional seating and storage is required. Sometimes we do not see the benefit of moving furniture and making changes, but it is good to reframe this as a time to re-home or recycle anything that you are not using anymore. It is also a good time to recycle some of the children’s toys to make room for the WOKINGHAM LOCAL • DECEMBER 2023

influx of new toys and games that are about to come into your home. Once any recycling and rehoming has happened you will have a clearer view of the areas in your home that many require some home improvements. That chair moved from the bedroom for additional seating looks very well placed in the newly repositioned sitting room and it would look lovely re-upholstered in a luxurious (stain resistant!) velvet, helping to add value to your home. Sometimes changing your home for Christmas can pave the way for new thoughts and ideas which can become home renovations in the coming year. Another thing that we think about when looking at a client’s home for renovation is the long-term plan for their home; how they use it, what their requirements are and how we can add maximum value to their home. All of these points should be addressed to ensure that the home function and layout works well for the long term; and means that the clients reap rewards far into the future. Is your home being used in a different way recently or has the amount of people dwelling there changed? Entertaining is a huge part of the Christmas festivities, and this can vary from family to friends and neighbours. Some guests will require more planning than others and this will be something that you hone over the years. Guests like to feel catered for, and that they are at a home away from home. This can be tricky to balance in your home with the existing occupants. One thing to crack early on is the sleeping arrangements, followed by the bathroom flexibility and the amount of comfortable seating required. Plenty of cosy places to sit and rest will make for a more pleasurable experience for all; this doesn’t need to be in the sitting room but can be in any area of the home and can even extend to outside weather and a warm blanket permitting. Once you have created these nooks and havens of peace everyone can expand out as necessary and can come back together when required, to continue the festivities. WOKINGHAM LOCAL • DECEMBER 2023

We do tend to get very caught up in the festive season and there is huge pressure to make your home perfect for all of your guests. Do remember that this is just one day, and life very much goes back to normal after Christmas. Don’t be tempted to quickly renovate your home for Christmas; take your time to get renovations and adjustments right for the long term. A new cushion is not going to solve many issues; but analysing the space you have, and your requirements will prove a better long-term investment for you and your family.
