WELCOME... Welcome to our February ‘Valentine’s’ edition of the magazine. On February 14th we celebrate Valentine’s Day which symbolises love, connection, and the appreciation of meaningful relationships in various forms. It’s an opportunity to express romantic feelings and appreciation for our loved ones through gestures like exchanging gifts, which is where Pratts Pods, for pre-loved tech devices, are your one-stop shop. Gayle at Enchanting Glass Designs at Holme Grange Craft Village is ‘Saying it with Glass’ to celebrate Valentines and Mother’s Day which is on the 10th March this year. So, where to eat out for our romantic or family get-togethers? Well, I spent Five Minutes with Imad of Grilko on Peach Place as he talks about his passion for Mediterranean food, and as they say at Dessert Maid on Central Walk - “there is always room for dessert’’. Who isn’t looking forward to irresistible ice-cream delights, to melt hearts this Valentines? If romance should lead up to that ‘big’ day we feature Anthony Blay menswear and Becker Bespoke tailors for wedding suits of the highest quality; we also feature the wedding dress, wedding fairs and the splendid venues in and around our beautiful countryside, showcasing both the traditional and contemporary options available. Also in this edition, for business owners we look at strategic investment with our local firms of accountants, while in the home Jessica Cox is feeling ‘inspired’ and outdoors the February garden starts to awaken with quiet but determined energy! Speaking of energy, February 10th is the start of Chinese New Year which is the Year of the Dragon, which represents courage, strength, good fortune and intelligence. That certainly is a lot to celebrate this month, so share a cosy dinner, exchange heartfelt gifts, enjoy a romantic weekend, and cherish each moment together, creating lasting memories. Empathy in Action Exploring Careers in the Care Sector A career in care not only offers a wide variety of development opportunities and great career pathways, it’s also incredibly rewarding and you can make a real difference to people’s lives. Have you ever considered a career in care? This article gives an overview of some of the typical roles available in care homes and the key responsibilities and experience required.
Care Assistant
As a member of the care team, you’ll provide personal care to residents. This includes supporting residents with washing, dressing, eating and maintaining their hygiene. Previous experience isn’t essential as full training is provided. You’ll need a compassionate approach and excellent interpersonal skills. Care Assistants will often progress to being a Senior Care Assistant or Care Home Assistant Practitioner (CHAP).
Senior Care Assistant
Senior Care Assistants are responsible for providing support and guidance to the care team, ensuring WOKINGHAM LOCAL • FEBRUARY 2024
residents receive high quality care. This involves reviewing and updating care plans and completing care duties. For this role, you are required to have at least a NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care and previous experience of working in a health care environment. 7
Care Home Assistant Practitioner (CHAP) CHAP roles are perfect for Care Assistants or Senior Care Assistants looking to progress their skills and knowledge. As a CHAP, you will gain valuable skills by working closely with clinical team members. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, you’ll provide care and clinical support to residents, including administering medications, wound care and making clinical observations.
Clinical team
To join a care home’s clinical team, you need to be a qualified Nurse. The common roles that make up clinical teams include Registered General Nurses, Clinical Leads and Unit Managers. A key area of the role is team leading as well as liaising with family members and health care professionals. You will use all your clinical and personal skills and enjoy an all-round nursing career whilst building close relationships for those in your care.
Activities team
Just because someone moves into a care home, it doesn’t mean they should stop doing the things 8

they love. As a member of the activities team, you are responsible for delivering an everchanging activities programme tailored to residents’ interests and needs. You could be organising trips out to local attractions, arranging visits from mobile zoos, planning birthday parties or community events and leading arts & crafts activities. Although previous experience is preferred, it’s not essential, as training and support is provided. You’ll need great interpersonal skills to build strong relationships with residents and people in the local area, to help residents stay connected to their local community.
Home Administrator
In this role, you will be one of the first people to welcome residents and their loved ones, which is why it’s important you have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. As a Home Administrator, you will work closely with the Home Manager, providing comprehensive administrative support. Tasks include processing payroll, liaising with families and community contacts and supporting the care team. Previous experienced isn’t usually required, but you need to be a team player, who is highly organised and can multitask. WOKINGHAM LOCAL • FEBRUARY 2024
Care Home Manager
As a Care Home Manager, you lead the team and are responsible for managing the business and ensuring the facility operates effectively and delivers the very best quality care. As well as providing ongoing training and development for team members, you are responsible for managing budgets and ensuring regulatory compliance is maintained across all relevant areas. You will be experienced in working in the health care sector and may be required to have a clinical qualification as well as experience in managing a team.
Choose to care
It takes a very special person to work in care. Yes, it can be challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. Caring for one another, especially our most vulnerable, has never been more important. You can make such a positive impact on someone’s life when you choose a career in care. Stacey O’Coileain

Leg Veins How can I get rid of broken veins on my legs? Broken veins on the legs is very common, but people often find them quite unsightly. Microsclerotherapy is used to treat little broken veins on the surface of the skin. They are usually red or purple coloured and often look like a bruise. A sclerosant liquid is injected into the veins with very tiny needles. The liquid makes the veins inflamed and they eventually breakdown and disappear. Some veins will go in one or two treatments and some larger, more complex veins require more treatments. Please note, we cannot treat varicose veins.

Fish n’Chips It’s a Ritual!
The seaside town comes alive with the rhythmic melody of crashing waves and the invigorating scent of salty sea air. As the sun dips below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the picturesque landscape, there’s no better way to immerse oneself in the coastal charm than by savoring the timeless pleasures of fish and chips. The quaint fish and chip shop, nestled along the bustling promenade, beckons with its welcoming aroma of freshly fried delights. The golden, crispy batter enveloping succulent fish fillets tantalizes the taste buds even before the first bite. The rhythmic sizzle emanating from the fryer creates a symphony that harmonizes with the distant seagull calls and the gentle lapping of waves against the shore. Seated at a weathered picnic table overlooking the expansive sea, the experience becomes a sensory journey. The contrast of the piping hot, crunchy exterior and the tender, flaky fish within creates a perfect harmony of textures. The first bite is a revelation, as the flavors burst forth – a marriage of sea and earth, a celebration of the freshest catch and the finest potatoes. The hand-cut chips, with their rustic appeal, offer a satisfying crunch that gives way to a pillow-soft interior. Each bite transports one to a simpler time, evoking memories of seaside holidays and carefree moments spent with family and friends. The sprinkle of sea salt enhances the natural flavours, while a splash of malt vinegar adds 14

a tangy kick that elevates the entire culinary experience. As the sun sets, casting a kaleidoscope of hues across the horizon, the fish and chips experience takes on a magical quality. Seagulls swoop down, drawn by the irresistible aroma, adding a touch of whimsy to the scene. The sound of laughter and joyous chatter fills the air, creating a communal atmosphere where strangers bond over a shared appreciation for this quintessential seaside delight. Eating fish and chips at a seaside town is not just a culinary indulgence; it’s a ritual that connects individuals with the timeless allure of the coast. It’s about embracing the simplicity of life, relishing the flavours that nature provides, and creating lasting memories against the backdrop of the vast, ever-changing sea. In those moments, the pleasures of fish and chips become more than a meal – they become a symphony of sensations, a celebration of tradition, and a cherished part of the seaside experience.
Why not a book a trip to the seaside with Seekers Travel this Spring, and treat yourself and your group to a mystery drive on a luxury coach trip to the coast with a fish and chip lunch included. After lunch you will have plenty of time to enjoy a popular coastal resort.

FEELING INSPIRED by Jessica Cox Design Ltd
There are so many sources of inspiration around us and knowing how to use them within your interior planning is a great way to begin any new design scheme. It is something that I ask all my new clients at the start of a project to collect as many inspirational images as possible, so that I can get to know them and their style – and what they like and dislike. Inspiration can come from the nature around us, the colours in the changing seasons (most people have a favourite) from magazines, social media, even TV and film. I am constantly taking pictures of my surroundings, from the colours in the sky when I’m out walking the dog or a pattern on a menu board from a service station – it is constant! We all know that when you are thinking about getting a new car or upgrading the kitchen you start to pay more attention to other cars on the road or take more note of your friends and family’s kitchens that you are in – this is using inspiration to help build your own ideas, likes and dislikes. It is very rare that when I see a space for the first time that it is a completely blank canvas. Usually there is a piece of furniture, a rug or a piece of artwork that the client would like to keep – and this is something I can then usually base 16
the scheme on. An example of how this works: A piece of artwork (that I bought for £3 from a local charity shop) became the starting point for an entire bedroom scheme.
WOKINGHAM LOCAL • FEBRUARY 2024
The soft, aged colour of the print became the perfect warm neutral colour for the walls and woodwork in the room. The rich, burgundy mount was the perfect tone for the bed fabric (which is the main focal point of the space). The delicate pink tones from the petals are pulled out of the artwork and found in the feature wallpaper that wraps behind the bed and around three of the walls in the room (inspiration not only for the colour, but for the botanical theme that runs throughout the house) – and finally the green colour of the leaves within the picture are used in the accessories in the bedroom. This all comes together to create a cohesive, thought-out scheme that all came out of one small piece of inexpensive artwork. This idea works with different styles of artwork or fabrics – if you have a

piece that has one dominant colour and two or three other colours – try pulling out one of the background colours to use within the scheme, maybe as a wall colour or sofa fabric, or even with within cushions or accessories around the room. Social media (Instagram, Pinterest, Blogs) can be a great source of inspiration with so much material available, although this can also be quite overwhelming with knowing where to start. By saving images that you like, hopefully you start to see a pattern of similarities or colours that you are drawn to, which helps build an idea of the types of schemes you like. It is always good to keep in mind the end use of the room too, an all-white scheme you love in an image might not work as well in a busy family living space that young children often do arts and crafts in, but you can always look at taking elements of the inspiration and making them work for you – some oversized white frames for the walls or a white cotton throw for the sofa that can be taken off and washed. It’s about finding the inspiration, but making it your own. I hope this helps with how to get started, but most importantly – have fun with finding your inspiration and remember to keep a look out wherever you are!

FEBRUARY GARDENS February gardens awaken with a quiet but determined energy, signaling the gradual end of winter’s slumber. Despite the lingering chill in the air, nature begins to stir, offering a preview of the vibrant life that will soon burst forth. In these early days of February, gardeners eagerly anticipate the arrival of spring, finding solace and joy in the subtle signs of renewal.
As the month unfolds, the first rays of sunlight pierce through the gray clouds, casting a gentle warmth upon the garden. Snowdrops, those resilient harbingers of spring, push through the frost-covered soil, their delicate white blossoms nodding in the breeze. These small flowers, often referred to as the “fair maids of February,” bring a sense of hope and renewal to the garden, reassuring gardeners that winter’s grip is loosening. The awakening garden is a canvas painted with muted hues, where the earthy tones of dormant plants begin to merge with the emerging greens. Crocuses, with their vivid purple, white, and yellow petals, join the floral orchestra, creating a stunning contrast against the remnants of winter’s monochrome palette. Their blooms seem to defy the lingering frost, a testament to nature’s resilience and the unstoppable march of the seasons. February gardens are not only about flowers; they are also a stage for the awakening of trees and shrubs. Buds, tightly closed during the cold winter months, begin to swell and unfurl. Bare branches, once stark against the winter sky, take on a subtle fuzziness as 20

tiny leaves begin to emerge. The garden transforms into a delicate dance of shapes and textures, as nature orchestrates its grand spectacle of rebirth. Gardeners, armed with pruners and trowels, become active participants in this unfolding dram a. It’s a time for careful inspection and preparation. The removal of winter debris, the clearing of pathways, and the gentle pruning of shrubs are all acts of devotion to the garden’s well-being. As the soil softens with each passing day, it becomes a welcoming canvas for new plantings, promising a future tapestry of color and fragrance. February is a month of contrasts in the garden. While some plants push forward with determination, others remain in a state of dormancy, their awakening postponed until the warmth of later spring. This interplay of life and dormancy creates a nuanced landscape, where the past and the future coexist in a delicate balance. In the midst of this transition, birds return to the garden with cheerful melodies. Robins hop along the thawing ground, searching for earthworms and insects. The subtle symphony of birdsong

becomes a soundtrack to the garden’s awakening, adding another layer to the sensory experience. Bird feeders attract a diverse array of visitors, their vibrant plumage adding splashes of color to the evolving scene. February also marks the time for early vegetables to be sown indoors. The promise of fresh greens and crisp vegetables motivates gardeners to start seeds in anticipation of the growing season ahead. Seed trays become miniature nurseries, each tiny sprout a testament to the potential contained within the confines of a small seed. As the days lengthen, the garden becomes a place of transition. Shadows cast by the low-angled sun create patterns on the thawing ground. The air, though still cool, carries a hint of milder days to come. Gardeners, now armed with a sense of purpose and the knowledge that winter’s grasp is waning, approach their tasks with renewed enthusiasm. In these February gardens, hope blooms alongside the snowdrops and crocuses. The earth, awakening from its winter slumber, offers a glimpse of the vibrant tapestry that will unfold in the coming 22
months. February is a month of anticipation, a prelude to the riot of colours and scents that will define the garden’s peak. As the days progress, the garden becomes a stage for nature’s grand performance, and those who tend to it are privileged witnesses to the magic of rebirth. WOKINGHAM LOCAL • FEBRUARY 2024

chinese new year Courage, Ambition, and Dominance - The Chinese Year of the Dragon (February 10th) is one of the most anticipated and revered periods in the Chinese zodiac cycle. In 2024, the majestic Dragon takes centre stage, bringing with it a sense of power, vitality, and transformation. This mythical creature symbolizes strength, good fortune, and intelligence, making the year ahead a time of both challenges and opportunities. The Dragon is the only mythical animal in the Chinese zodiac, and its presence is often associated with the emperor and imperial power. People born in the Year of the Dragon are believed to inherit the dragon’s traits of courage, ambition, and dominance. As 2024 unfolds, these characteristics are likely to influence global events and individual destinies. In Chinese culture, the dragon is also linked to rain, which is essential for agriculture and prosperity. Consequently, the Year of the Dragon is often considered a time of abundance and fertility. Agriculturally, it may bring favorable weather conditions, contributing to bountiful harvests and economic growth. However, this abundance can also be metaphorical, signifying opportunities for 24
personal and professional development. The Year of the Dragon is renowned for its transformative energy. Just as the mythical dragon can soar to great heights, individuals and nations alike may experience significant shifts and changes. This could manifest as breakthroughs in technology, advancements in science, or even changes in political landscapes. The transformative power of the Dragon encourages innovation and a willingness to embrace new ideas and methodologies. In the realm of personal relationships, the Dragon is known for its passionate and charismatic nature. Those born under this sign are believed to be magnetic and have a natural ability to attract others. Consequently, the Year of the Dragon may witness the flourishing of romantic WOKINGHAM LOCAL • FEBRUARY 2024
relationships and the birth of influential partnerships. However, it is essential to navigate these connections with care, as the dragon’s intense energy can also lead to conflicts and power struggles. In Chinese mythology, the dragon is also associated with guarding treasures. As such, the Year of the Dragon may bring opportunities for financial growth and prosperity. However, it is crucial to approach financial matters with prudence and foresight, as the dragon’s unpredictable nature can also bring economic volatility. Culturally, the Year of the Dragon is a time for celebration and festivity. Communities around the world may engage in traditional dragon dances, fireworks, and other symbolic activities to usher in good fortune and ward off evil spirits. It is WOKINGHAM LOCAL • FEBRUARY 2024
a time for people to come together, celebrate their heritage, and embrace the positive energy that the dragon symbolises. In 2024, Chinese New Year will be celebrated with foods symbolising good fortune and prosperity. Fish, a timeless favorite, will grace tables, representing abundance. Dumplings, shaped like ancient ingots, symbolise wealth, promising financial success. Spring rolls will be enjoyed for a fresh start, signifying new opportunities in the coming year. Nian Gao, a sticky rice cake, will be relished for its connection to progress and growth. Tangerines and oranges, believed to attract luck and wealth, will bring citrusy sweetness to households. Pomelos, associated with abundance, will be shared for a prosperous future, and longevity will be wished upon with uncut noodles, while Eight Treasures Rice will serve as a symbol of luck. Lotus seeds will be savoured, symbolising fertility and the prospect of a flourishing family, and sweet rice balls, or Tangyuan, will be shared to celebrate family reunion and unity. As Chinese communities in Maidenhead, Wokingham and around the Royal borough usher in the Year of the Dragon in 2024, these traditional foods will be enjoyed not only for their flavours but also for the rich symbolism they bring to this joyous and auspicious occasion. 25
WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A
MAN IN A MODERN WORLD In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in societal attitudes towards men’s health and personal grooming. Traditionally, the stereotypical image of a man often involved a rugged, unshaven appearance and a nonchalant attitude towards health and grooming. However, contemporary cultural changes, evolving gender norms, and an increased awareness of the importance of self-care have contributed to a growing trend of men taking better care of their health and appearance. One significant factor driving this change is the evolving definition of masculinity. The outdated notion that men should be stoic and dismissive of personal care has given way to a more inclusive understanding of what it means to be a man. Men are increasingly embracing the idea that taking care of oneself is a sign of strength and confidence rather than a compromise of masculinity. The rise of social media has also played a crucial role in shaping perceptions of beauty and grooming for men. Platforms like Instagram and YouTube showcase diverse styles and grooming routines, fostering a culture where men feel encouraged to experiment with different looks and prioritise self-maintenance. Influencers and 26
celebrities openly sharing their grooming routines and promoting healthy lifestyles further contribute to a positive shift in attitudes towards self-care among men. Additionally, the increasing awareness of the impact of lifestyle on overall health has prompted men WOKINGHAM LOCAL • FEBRUARY 2024
to pay more attention to their well-being. With a wealth of information available on the internet, men are now better informed about the importance of regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress management. As a result, they are actively seeking ways to incorporate these practices into their daily lives, leading to a more holistic approach to health. The grooming industry has responded to this cultural shift by expanding its offerings for men. Brands now provide a wide range of skincare, haircare, and grooming products tailored to men’s specific needs. This accessibility makes it easier for men to integrate grooming into their routines, reinforcing the idea that self-care is not only acceptable but also essential, hence, the changing perceptions of masculinity, the influence of social media, increased awareness of health implications, and the expanding grooming industry are all contributing factors to why more men are looking after their health and personal grooming. THE
WEDDING DRESS Wedding dress trends evolve with each passing season, reflecting the ever-changing landscape of bridal fashion. In recent times, several styles have gained immense popularity, captivating the hearts of brides around the world. One prevailing trend is the resurgence of vintageinspired dresses. Many brides are drawn to the timeless elegance of lace and intricate embroidery reminiscent of bygone eras. Whether it’s a bohemianchic look with flowing sleeves or a classic A-line silhouette with a touch of vintage lace, these dresses exude romance and charm. Another notable trend is the rise of minimalist wedding dresses. Modern brides are embracing simplicity, favoring clean lines, and understated elegance. These dresses often feature sleek silhouettes, unembellished fabrics, and subtle details, allowing the bride’s natural beauty to shine through. In recent years, non-traditional colours have gained traction in wedding dress fashion. Blush, champagne, and even bold hues like deep red or navy have found their way into bridal collections, allowing brides to express their individuality and break away from traditional white or ivory. Ultimately, personalisation is a prevailing theme in wedding dress choices. Many brides are opting for customisations, such as unique embellishments, detachable sleeves, or convertible styles that allow for a different look during the ceremony and reception. This emphasis on individuality ensures that each bride can find a dress that perfectly complements her style and vision for the most important day of her life.

WEDDING FAIRS
Meeting wedding suppliers and touring the venue and grounds at local wedding fairs throughout Berkshire and further afield can be crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it provides an opportunity for face-to-face interaction, allowing you to gauge the personality and professionalism of potential vendors, and assess the charm and ambience of the venue.
Secondly, wedding fairs offer a chance to see and experience the supplier’s work firsthand. Whether it’s sampling cakes, viewing floral arrangements, or choosing the dress and suit, this hands-on experience can help you make informed decisions about the quality and style of their services. Ultimately, attending wedding fairs can streamline the vendor selection process, helping you make confident and well-informed decisions based on personal interactions and tangible examples of their work. While not mandatory, the personal connections and insights gained at these fairs can significantly contribute to the success and satisfaction of your wedding day. So lets visit a selection of venues where our very own Jayne and her team at Anthony Blay Menswear and Jonathan of 32

THE STRATEGIC INVESTMENT OF
AN ACCOUNTANT
FOR SMALL BUSINESSES In the dynamic landscape of small businesses, entrepreneurs often grapple with the decision of whether to view hiring an accountant as a necessary cost or a strategic investment. While some may see it as an additional expense, it is crucial to shift this perspective and recognise the myriad ways in which an accountant can contribute to the growth, stability, and overall success of a small business.
Financial Expertise and Decision Support: An accountant brings a wealth of financial expertise to the table, offering invaluable insights into the company’s fiscal health. They can help small businesses navigate complex financial regulations, interpret financial statements, and provide strategic advice. By having a professional who understands the nuances of accounting principles, businesses can make informed decisions, minimising financial risks and maximizing opportunities for growth. Time and Resource Efficiency: Small business owners often wear multiple hats, juggling various responsibilities to keep the operation running smoothly. Engaging an accountant allows entrepreneurs to offload the time-consuming task of managing financial records, tax compliance, and bookkeeping. This not only frees up precious time for the business owner but also ensures that financial matters are handled efficiently and accurately, reducing the risk of errors and potential financial setbacks.

Tax Compliance and Savings: Navigating the intricate landscape of tax regulations can be a daunting task for small businesses. Accountants specialise in staying abreast of tax laws, helping businesses remain compliant while identifying opportunities for tax savings. With their knowledge of deductions, credits, and incentives, accountants can potentially save the business more money than their cost, making their services a strategic investment in long-term financial health. Risk Mitigation: Small businesses face numerous financial risks, from cash flow challenges to unforeseen economic downturns. An accountant serves as a financial guardian, helping to identify potential risks and develop strategies to mitigate them. Their ability to conduct financial analysis and scenario planning enables businesses to be better prepared for uncertainties, ultimately safeguarding the company’s financial stability.
Strategic Planning and Growth: Accountants play a pivotal role in strategic planning, offering financial forecasts and insights that guide the business toward growth opportunities. By understanding the financial implications of different strategies, small businesses can make informed decisions that align with their long-term objectives. An accountant can act as a financial partner, aiding in the development and execution of business plans for sustainable growth. Credibility and Financial Transparency: Well-maintained financial records and transparent reporting contribute to the credibility of a small business. Having an accountant ensures that financial statements are accurate, organised, and readily available, fostering trust among investors, lenders, and customers. This enhanced credibility can open doors to additional funding, partnerships, and business opportunities.

Adaptation to Changing Regulations: The business environment is subject to continuous regulatory changes. Accountants are well-versed in adapting to these changes and ensuring compliance. By having a professional who stays current with
financial regulations, small businesses can avoid penalties, legal issues, and reputational damage that may arise from non-compliance. Focus on Core Competencies: Small business owners often excel in their core competencies, whether it’s product development, service delivery, or customer relations. Outsourcing financial tasks to an accountant allows the business owner to focus on what they do best, leading to increased productivity and innovation. All in all, considering an accountant as an investment rather than a cost is a strategic mindset shift that can profoundly impact the success of a small business. The financial expertise, time savings, risk mitigation, and growth opportunities they bring make accountants indispensable partners in navigating the complex financial landscape, ultimately contributing to the longterm sustainability and prosperity of the business.

Five Minutes With:
Jacqui Priestley spends 5 Minutes with Imad - Chef Patron of Grilko on Peach Place as he talks about his passion for Mediterranean cuisine, Grilko and Wokingham WL: What drew you to Wokingham and, specifically, Peach Place? I: I made the move to Wokingham in 2019 for a job opportunity, and from the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the vibrant atmosphere of Peach Place. It quickly became our go-to spot, especially on sunny days when meeting with friends and family. WL: How did you come up with the name Grilko? I: We were keen on having a brand name that is (1) concise – single word (2) memorable , and (3) relevant to our offering. The GRIL part of Grilko is at the heart of our menu whereas the KO part is for our organic coffee. KO also symbolises collaboration and companionship. In a sense, every item on the menu has been designed to inspire sharing, including the wraps, which are served in halves. We also aim to create a warm and welcoming ambiance for friends 42
and families, no matter if they are coming for a morning coffee, a work meeting, a family dinner, or a quick bite during lunch break. WL: How did you come to the decision to serve Mediterranean food? I: While Wokingham offers varied culinary offerings, it was clearly evident some exciting Mediterranean food was still missing. WOKINGHAM LOCAL • FEBRUARY 2024
WL: Grilko’s official opening was just a few months ago, yet it has already garnered highly positive reviews. What accounts for this favourable feedback? I: I attribute the positive reception to the fact that our core objectives closely align with customer expectations. Grilko’s objectives are: 1. Deliver ‘Fresh and Tasty’ food Every Time. Our commitment to sourcing high-quality, fresh ingredients and maintaining rigorous culinary standards ensures that every dish served at Grilko’s provides a delightful experience for the taste buds. 2. Maintaining Affordable Prices. We firmly believe that enjoying delicious food should be within everyone’s reach. Our dedication is reflected in a menu designed not only to satisfy palates but also to fit comfortably within every budget. 3. Short preparation time. Recognising the value of time, we’ve streamlined our kitchen processes to guarantee a swift turnaround. This ensures our customers can savour their meals without unnecessary delays. These threefold objectives underscore our dedication and commitment to culinary excellence and customer satisfaction. WL: I’ve noticed you offer a variety of vegan items on your menu. How does your vegan selection compare to your grilled meat options? I: Grilko’s menu is inspired by Mediterranean cuisine which is inherently rich in vegan and vegetarian dishes. If you look at our nibbles, mezza, sides and salads, you will find that the majority of these items are Vegan and vegetarian. Additionally, four out of our seven wraps cater specifically to vegan diets. During the past months, we’ve been responding to the strong demand for vegan alternatives as we introduced several new items. For instance, bestsellers like lamb kibbeh and lamb kofta inspired the creation of Vegi Kibbeh and Vegan Kofta. Surprisingly, these vegan alternatives quickly gained popularity, even among non-vegan customers
WL: All platters and wraps on your menu are typically served with gluten-containing bread. Is it possible for customers with gluten intolerance to order any of your main dishes with glutenfree bread? I: Certainly! We provide gluten-free alternative bread at no additional cost, and there is no requirement for pre-ordering. Our menu clearly marks all gluten-free items, including options such as gluten-free lemon and mocha tarts, as well as gluten-free beer. WL: Is the meat you serve Halal? I: Yes, all our meat is sourced locally from British suppliers and comes with approved and recognised Halal certification. WL: How often do you update your menu? I: We regularly refresh our menu with a new print issue released every month. This routine update enables us to consistently improve existing recipes, introduce exciting new items, and streamline our offerings by removing less popular items. WL: What are your future plans? I: In the near future, we plan to introduce exciting breakfast options that complement our organic coffee and tea offerings. Additionally, we aim to organise some exciting entertainment activities to enhance our customer’s experience. From myself and my team at Wokingham Local, and I am sure I can also speak on behalf of our Wokingham community and readership, when I say that we wish you all the very best in your venture and to the future of GRILKO.
