Wow, time sure does fly! At the time of writing, it’s coming up to 11 months since we opened in September 2021. It seems like only yesterday that we were fitting out our salon in Denmark Street last summer.
We’ve been thrilled by the warm reception from everyone, and it’s been our pleasure to welcome all our lovely guests. It’s especially gratifying when people who’ve been to Thailand tell us how happy they are to have a truly authentic Thai massage experience in Wokingham. We’ll be celebrating our first anniversary this September with a special treat for our regular guests, which we’ll announce nearer the time. Thai massage is a great way to relieve muscular stress, tension and knots. You’ve probably seen pictures of skeletal muscles portrayed as bundles of fibres. Each fibre is made up of a huge number of muscle cells, which contain thousands of tiny, stacked structures called sarcomeres.
These work like microscopic ratchets during contraction which release to relax the muscle. Sometimes, this ratchet mechanism doesn’t completely release, causing the muscle to retain tension. This can result in those uncomfortable knots and tightness!
By manipulating the muscle tissue, Thai massage helps release those stuck ratchets, easing the tension and discomfort. Want to try it for yourself? Snap, crackle and pop! Great for a breakfast cereal, but bad news when it’s coming from your head, neck, shoulders or back.
We spend long hours working in one way or another, and that can mean putting hours of stress on the body. It could be repetitive motion, physical exertion or even maintaining a desk-bound posture in front of a computer. The human head weighs roughly 5 to 6 kg, supported on just 7 vertebrae in the neck. That might not sound like much but imagine holding two new-born babies at arm’s length… arms would sag after just a few minutes, never mind trying to support that weight all day long. That’s why you feel that tender tightness down the neck and across the shoulders at the end of the day. Our massages are a fabulous way to ease those tight knots buried within tense muscles. Our traditional Thai massage techniques apply a combination of tissue manipulation, acupressure and limb stretches (assisted yoga positions) to work out all that tension. Despite all that, we’ve even had some guests fall asleep on our massage beds during a session. That’s how relaxing it can be! Thai massage dates back centuries. Each Thai village had a massage healer who helped relieve the aches and pains of hard-working villagers toiling under peasant society. It’s even recognised by UNESCO as part of our intangible human heritage!
