Horses for Heroes An Inspiration

Anyone who has had experience with horses knows that they have big hearts. Horses have been used in lots of different therapeutic environments, from physical and mental disabilities to the rehabilitation of offenders and the recovery of drug addiction. This innovative project based in Aberdeen is open to both injured serving military personnel and veterans and helps them to recover from physical and mental trauma through the use of horse riding and countryside activities. This project is an absolute inspiration, you only have to read the testimonials on their website www.horsebackuk.org to see how much it has positively changed peoples lives.

The Inspiration of ‘HorseBack’ In 2009, Jock and Emma Hutchison had a radically simple idea: why not use horses to heal wounded veterans? Starting in America, and now in growing numbers in the United Kingdom, horses are being used for therapeutic purposes, with their effectiveness seen in a variety of areas: children with autism, young offenders, adults with addictions. The science of how equine therapy works is still young, but growing numbers of peer-reviewed studies, published in Germany, Australia and the United States, are building a sound empirical base for this fledgling idea. Three years on from that first

6

eureka moment, an effective operation is now in full swing. War veterans and servicemen and women still on active duty, with all manner of injuries, from amputation to post-traumatic stress disorder, come to the blue hills of Deeside for rehabilitation and recovery. Courses are run over 1 to 2 weeks, with the permanent team of instructors composed of wounded veterans, who have served on the front line. This has three powerful

benefits: the bond of shared experience and understanding; the familiarity of the military ethos, for those making the transition into civilian life. And for the instructors themselves, there is a building of confidence and development of new talents, so crucial for their own recovery. HorseBack has a complex and wide-ranging set of effects. Those with mental trauma find that most elusive of qualities: peace, with something as elementary as

The Face of Windermere & Kendal

horses in their therapeutic aspect. HorseBack UK is devoted to helping those who have given everything for their country. Often, these veterans, with their life-changing injuries, seem invisible to the wider public. At HorseBack, they are given the tools and skills to make a new life, the opportunities to build a bridge from military to civilian life, and the care and attention they deserve.

a full night’s sleep rediscovered. Working at HorseBack returns these veterans from isolation to independence; as one of them put it, plainly, it taught him how to be a man again. For those with amputations, horses restore the liberating sense of mobility. At its core, HorseBack believes one true thing: it is not what you can’t do, but what you can.

How does it work? HorseBack essentially acts as a bridge, from one life to another. For veterans, it is the link between the long, gruelling months of medical treatment, physical rehabilitation, and mental therapy, and a new start in the civilian world. For those who will return to service after being injured, it builds strength, confidence and capability. Perhaps the most important part of the entire operation is that it is run by those who have been in the theatre of war themselves. The advantage this brings to participants and instructors alike creates a powerful virtuous circle. And those who have been on the initial courses may return on a voluntary basis. Many of them return not just to volunteer, but to bring cheques from a variety of imaginative fund-raising exercises. In this way, HorseBack has developed not just into a place of

rehabilitation and recovery, but has taken on the aspect of an extended family.

Community Connections: Integration with the local community is one of the guiding lights of the whole HorseBack UK operation. HorseBack works with schoolchildren throughout Aberdeenshire with wounded veterans making visits to schools and children exposed to the nature of life-changing injury. In turn, the injured men and women have the opportunity to teach and enlighten, and also feel part of the community. In addition, HorseBack has started working with children with autism, the blind and the deaf, for whom the use of horses has proved particularly effective.

What does the future hold for HorseBack? Over the next few years HorseBack UK hopes to set up further centres around the UK in partnership with Help for Heroes. These centres will be based near to the Personnel Recovery Centres in Edinburgh, Catterick, Colchester, Tidworth and Plymouth, with the structure of these centres mirroring that of the Aberdeen centre.

Why choose to support HorseBack UK? HorseBack UK is the only operation of its kind in the United Kingdom. Its combination of specially trained horses, an experienced military team, and a location in the glorious Scottish countryside make it unique. It has a valuable educational aspect, with school initiatives and has starting to work with local children with a variety of developmental and physical challenges, using the

Fit & Healthy for 2013 Regular articles from our resident personal trainer Sarah Jones will help you get the results you want

Do you pass the test? As we approach March the resolutions we set back in January begin to feel like a drag, you don’t feel like your fitness is improving and you feel your body shape hasn’t changed!!! But how do you know this?? Most people set out on a goal without even knowing their baseline level of fitness, strength and figure measurements, so how do you know where improvements have been made. Fitness tests or fitness assessments are used to measure the health status and physical fitness of a person. Fitness testing at the start of a goal or training programme, during and after you have reached your target has been shown to increase the motivation and enthusiasm by tracking progress and evaluating success. There are many screening methods that can be undertaken. Here is a selection of examples to help you track your progression. All of these can be completed from home with minimal equipment. Anthropology: Weight, BMI, and Figure Measurements. BMI is

8

a measure of body mass, height, weight, muscle, fat and water. Work out your BMI using the formula below. Weight (Kg) BMI = Height (m)2 Ideal BMI < 25 Figure Measurements will help you to see the areas in which you are losing weight. Measure as follows. Chest (across nipple line), Waist (1inch above the belly button), Hips (hip line), Thighs (around top of the thigh), and Arms (around the top of the arm). Fitness Tests: These will test cardiovascular fitness and how efficiently the heart and lungs work to supply the body during exercise. A couple of example tests are below. -12min cooper run test. Run for 12 min as fast as you can and recorded the distance. - Rock port walking test. Brisk walk for 1 mile, recorded heart rate before and after your finish. Muscular strength and Endurance test: This test will record muscle strength and endurance in the upper body and in the abdominal

muscles. See below. - 1 min max test can be performed on Press Ups and Sit Ups. Perform this exercise for 1 min and record how many repetitions you complete, a bad technical repetition will not count. Performing these tests will measure improvements and give you the motivation to complete your training programme, keep a record of all testing so you can compare over time. If you would like any advice on fitness testing or help in achieving your fitness goals please do not hesitate to contact me on the details below. Happy Testing! Join ‘Sky Ride Local’ in the Lake District!

T

he Lake District has been chosen as the country’s first rural location for an innovative national cycling initiative. British Cycling trained Ride Leaders will guide small groups of cyclists around some of the Lake District’s most scenic spots - for free - with the launch of a community cycling initiative, ‘Sky Ride Local’, which will be coming to the region for the first time this summer. ‘Sky Ride Local’ bike rides are perfect for all ages, from beginners to experienced cyclists, and are a great way of getting visitors and locals out of their cars and experiencing a greener, healthier way of exploring the iconic scenery found in the South and Central Lakes. In partnership with British Cycling and Sky, the GoLakes Travel programme will bring the initiative to the area over the next two years. Previously, Sky Ride has centred on large towns and cities like Manchester and Newcastle, but this is the very first time it has come to a National Park. The GoLakes Travel programme is a £6.9 million initiative being delivered in partnership by Cumbria County Council, the Lake District National

Park Authority and Cumbria Tourism to influence people to make fewer car journeys while visiting the Lake District. It aims to reduce the area’s CO2 emissions by 11,000 tonnes by 2015. Delivering a series of free, fun, led bike rides around the Lake District, the scheme will begin this May and run through to October. Starting points for the routes will include popular tourist hotspots such as Ambleside and Windermere, many close to bike hire points and making the most of new - and planned - cycleways being enhanced through the GoLakes Travel programme. This includes the recently resurfaced Windermere West Shore Route along the traditionally quieter western side of the lake, between the Windermere Ferry terminal and Wray Castle (which is perhaps best known as the holiday home of a teenage Beatrix Potter). Steve Ratcliffe, Director of Planning and Partnerships at

the Lake District National Park Authority, said, “These bike rides are a great way of getting people out of their car and using alternative modes of transport in the busy summer months, particularly to travel between tourist attractions across the South and Central Lakes. Not only that, but the initiative will inspire people and give them the confidence to organise their own bike rides with friends and family.” The search is now on for local cyclists from across South Cumbria to train up as British Cycling Ride Leaders to lead these rides. The roles are open to anyone who loves cycling and wants to share their enthusiasm with visitors and residents alike. If you would like to become a Ride Leader or take part in ‘Sky Ride Local’ in the South and Central Lakes, register for free at: www.goskyride.com or www.golakestravel.co.uk/bybike

The Sine Dubio festival of art at the Low Wood Bay resort hotel

Y

ou may have noticed a gold frame touring the county, heard an exuberant interview about an arts festival on the radio, or perhaps noticed a mighty, dreadlocked gentleman wielding chainsaws on the front lawn of Low Wood Bay Resort Hotel over a weekend. For those who missed out on Sine Dubio’s inaugural festival, Adrian Naik

12

has you covered... Flutes of champagne liberally distributed is not what makes a festival’s Gala Night great, although it certainly doesn’t hurt. The Low Wood Bay Resort Hotel is never a dull location and yet tonight it had a gem tucked around a couple of corners. Brightly lit and unabashed, the pillars lining the grand gallery gave the perfect framing to the installations on display. The artwork was as captivating as it was varied: from sumptuous cut and coloured glass to classically styled oil on canvas. Among those enjoying the artwork were jumper-clad geriatrics, young professionals and energetic kids. All ages and demographics had turned up to welcome Sine Dubio to the world, but there were some notable absentees. There was no sign of the polonecks and berets, the uniform of art-snobs. Absent was the

pretentious atmosphere you’d expect at a gallery or arts show: this was an occasion everyone could enjoy. “We really wanted to show people art on their own turf.” said event organiser Sophia Newton. “We want to break down the barriers that surround the art world and let people feel comfortable talking about art. We wanted to show people you could meet artists: they’re normal people like you and me, but just happen to do these fabulous works as well!” Following a couple of speeches, the audience was invited to get involved. The crowd surrounded a gigantic piece of paper, and were encouraged to get creative. Games included drawing the person on your left or a rapid self-portrait. In the few moments that had flown by, we had created a grand modern tapestry spanning half the great hall.

The Face of Windermere & Kendal

Accessible Art at the Low Wood Resort Hotel It was a perfect analogy for the festivals mission: art by everyone, for everyone. Artists and guests alike were scribbling graffiti in a room adorned with gallery art. The plan to get everyone enjoying art was well devised. The schedule for the two days included lectures on art appreciation, lifedrawing and print-making classes. One young gentleman took it upon himself to inform me (a complete willow when it comes to art) the deeper meaning behind the pieces on display. He’d gone from zero to art-lover in a matter of minutes following one of the ‘Romanticism’ lectures. Several of the artists were there to talk about their work including Kendal’s own Andy Levy and Janice McGloine of Silverdale. Andy, a tall gentleman with dreadlocks and a collection of chainsaws, spent the weekend shearing a large chunk of wood into a detailed sculpture of a wild boar. Standing to watch on Low Wood Bay’s front lawn in glorious sunshine, the patrons were flecked with saw dust to the smell of petrol and a soundtrack of roaring motors. Who says art can’t be manly?! Each artist took great pleasure in sharing their experience from passion to exhibition. They all produced a piece there for the audience to see the process: we witnessed their art coming to life before our eyes. Not only was this very impressive, but more

importantly, it was inspiring. We could see people we had got to know creating their art. It showed us we could do this too. On the final day, a friend of mine who is studying art at Kendal College joined me at the festival. It was a pleasure to experience the day through her eyes: she was so excited to be there. Having wrangled somebody into covering her shift at work, she would get the opportunity to meet artists who have made it, talk to others with a shared passion and make contact with the industry. She may have ditched me at the entrance to schmooze with everyone there, but it made me realise why events such as this are so important. In an area so beautiful and rich in artistic heritage, from Wordsworth to Ruskin, we are starved of opportunities to appreciate the art we produce. Residents with a flair for painting and sculpture have their art whisked away to London, or it lies gathering dust in their attic. Locals who might find a passion for art are left with Xfactor and Come Dine With Me as their escape. The organisers are already looking at another event in October and Sine Dubio art festivals will be back in the near future. So when the time comes, seize the opportunity to help revive a most precious piece of our county’s history.

feature: mother’s day

It’s

that time again; Mother’s day is here! This is a time when all the unsung heroines of the land who work so tirelessly to keep their kids fed, happy and safe are thanked for their constant loving efforts. It is a time for spoiling mums and boosting the greeting card industry coffers and for handing over those precious but totally unidentifiable items created with such love in school art class. The origin of mother’s day goes back to the time when many men women and young girls and boys of the working class were employed in service in the great houses of the country. Traditionally, mother’s day was the day when children, mainly daughters, who were working as domestic servants, were given a day off to visit their mother’s and families. Most used the day to visit home and very often took a gift of food or even some second hand clothing, sent with them from their employers for their mother. Today mother’s day is a day when children give presents, flowers, and homemade cards and gifts to their mothers. Mother’s day quite often

16

starts with a precariously laid breakfast tray being carefully carried to mum in bed. Mum for her part feigns surprise and tries hard to conceal the fact that she has been on the verge of running downstairs several times as the aroma of burnt toast and the sound of raised children’s voices drifts up from the kitchen! Then as she munches on soggy toast rescued from the tsunami of spilt tea and orange juice sloshing about on the tray, the gifts will be given. As dad looks on in amazement mum manages to navigate the minefield of guessing what the strange objects - fired in a kiln and resembling something that might be found in the most vivid inventors imagination are, and coaxes an explanation of the object from their proud offspring. A wilted bunch of daffodils clasped in a sticky hand completes the beginning of mother’s day and it is not just the extra pepper on the scrambled eggs complete with generous shell pieces that brings a tear to mum’s eye. For older children cooking mum a Sunday roast can be a way of making sure that her day is a special one, while for dad it will present the opportunity to renew the batteries in the smoke alarms! The result, with a little help from dad, may be barely edible but

the thought is appreciated, even if every nerve in mum’s body has been twitching as she restrains herself from rescuing her roasting pan from almost certain death. Going out for a meal is also a very popular option and gives mum a chance to relax and be pampered by those who know what they are doing! Children, who through the rest of the year are real hell raisers, sit quietly, their wilder tendencies curbed temporarily by a steely look from dad and the utterance of the words. “It’s mother’s day!” Mum may have been given the choice of what she wants to do on her special day and as a result, normally Xbox fixated young might find themselves on a nice walk, following along like ducklings in their mother’s wake. Protestations that it is too cold/ wet/warm/boring freeze on young lips, as for one day they give mum what she really wants. So as you observe those groups gathering in restaurants, stepping out on sea fronts or just being together in the most unlikely places, remember this is a day when everything is different, when we can all be grateful for what our mothers do for us. It’s mother’s day!

review: daffodil spa

Relax in luxury.

You deserve it The Luxurious Daffodil Spa

L

uxury spa’s are my very guilty pleasure. From the rooftop spa at the Berkley Hotel in London, to the very unique spa at the Royal Crescent Hotel in Bath, I’ve seen a few. Imagine therefore, my elation (and my husband’s consternation) upon learning of the new, luxury spa in Grasmere, seconds from my home. The opening of the Daffodil Hotel and Spa in Grasmere in 2012 heralded a new chapter for the Lakeside building which is now a luxurious 78 bedroomed facility in one of the most beautiful locations in the country. The spa is quite simply, state of the art, from the large thermal pool

18

with relaxing water jets to massage the skin, to the twin-roomed Mud Rasul (a middle-eastern treatment whereby mineral mud product is applied to the face & body before a warm mist descends from the ceiling to gently wash away the remaining product). There is a large sauna, an even larger steam room and a relaxation room – the ‘tepidarium’, where one can relax prior to or post treatments. The spa offers a stunning complement of therapeutic and rejuvenating face and body care treatments, such as traditional massage alongside ritualistic massage therapies from around the world. And, it’s not all about the ladies. With a number of

packages available for the chaps, such as the aptly named ‘Lakeside Gent’ (back exfoliation, back massage and the C+ energy facial), it’s the perfect location for a ‘his n’ hers’ pamper day. I attended the ‘welcome evening’ on 6 December, an opportunity to explore the spa, learn more about the treatments available (and sample these if desired) and trial the Germaine de Capuccini products, found only in the most exclusive spas and salons in the world. The Germaine de Capuccini skincare range uses natural ingredients and cutting-edge technology and keen to find out what all the fuss was about, I purchased a pot of their ‘Excel

The Face of Windermere & Kendal

Therapy O² Continuous Defense’ cream. Needless to say, I am now working my way through a second pot and despite the current wintry weather, my skin feels hydrated and soft. I have also sampled a taster facial, a 40 minute introductory treatment that left my skin tingling and my blood pressure much lower than on an average day. In short, the spa at the Daffodil Hotel, Grasmere is a little slice of heaven away from the city, but with all

services one would expect from a high-end facility. And with the spa recently awarded ‘Best New Spa 2012’ by Germaine De Capuccini, they are well on their way to greatness. I have already booked another facial for next month and have their phone number on speed dial. Just don’t tell my husband... These Boots were made for walking The iconic ‘Dubarry’ The most iconic fashion trends in recent years have come from a strong sense of traditional styling. Companies that, even a decade ago, would have been deemed old fashioned, are now seen as leaders of new styles, combining a quality that the consumer actively seeks from their clothing, as well as giving versatility that ensures the items can be used to traverse the majority of ‘bang on trend’ looks. Dubarry are a company that epitomise this ideology. Founded in Ireland in 1937, the company’s philosophy was to create jobs by employing the very best craftsmen and craftswomen in the small town of Ballinasloe. And by using the very best workforce, it made sense not to compromise on the quality of the materials used, and so an enviable reputation was soon established. In line with the most desired fashion items of recent years, Dubarry are renowned for their footwear, excelling in particular, with their range of boots. Boots have become the fashion success story of the last decade. Where consumers may look to save money in many areas of their lives as we head towards an unprecedented triple dip recession, when it comes to boots, we remain happy to spend for quality. Obtaining the right pair of boots is seen as an investment and rightly so. When you purchase the right pair for you, they will combine with a multitude of bang on trend looks, and take you from day to night with ease. Not only this, but they will outlast fashion seasons and be with you for many years. Buying quality ensures that every year you use them, they will look like a new purchase. The quality and style of Dubarry combines individuality and a classic look that will have others admiring what you are wearing. But, as you would expect from a company from the rugged west coast of Ireland, you are attaining functionality at the same time. Dubarry’s range of country boots are renowned for

20

The Face of Windermere & Kendal

being a range that deliver for very good reasons. They are crafted to suit a wide range of country pursuits, from a day out at the races to a long country walk with the dog. Dubarry’s signature boot, the Galway, is a boot you are immediately drawn to and is deserving of its accreditation. Dubarry put thought into their design choices to make them fit for purpose – the high quality leather is chosen to dry quickly and remain soft in wet conditions, and its Gore-Tex properties ensure the boot is waterproof and breathable, so comfortable to wear. As you would expect, the sturdy sole will ensure a safe journey through diverse terrain but be prepared to be impressed by those details. Dubarry have inserted a small pull inside the boot so it is easy to pull on and off, and the pull tie feature at the top of the boot makes these fit the leg perfectly. Dubarry’s other boot collection is its range of sailing boots. At long last, it is truly possible to indulge your pastime and indulge your passion for fashion without the need to compromise. These boots are built to not only be waterproof, but emphasis also warm and non-slip. And why shouldn’t you have a range of styles and colours to choose from? Dubarry understand that whilst you may have the hobby of sailing in common, you are also an individual, designing boots to suit differing style and colour preferences. Of course, Dubarry isn’t all about boots. They also deliver a wide range of clothing, bags and accessories for both men and women. feature: international women's day

In the Name of Women Everywhere

Creating Opportunities on International Women’s Day If you’re a woman and you like to have a chat over a cup of tea and a slice of cake, then I urge you to read on. I have three little words for you that are of vital importance to women the world over and should not be ignored: International Women’s Day! Yes. It occurs annually every March 8th, but in the UK, we have not been very good at celebrating it. Just how aware are you of what it means and what you can do to get involved? The notion of a Women’s Day had its birth within the socialist movement just over a century ago. Women had become increasingly radicalized during the late nineteenth century, fostering a great deal of debate about oppression and inequality, which in turn led to unrest. The United States were the first to hold a National Women’s Day on 28th February 1909, and this was followed the succeeding year when representatives of 17 nations came together at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen and agreed to declare an annual International Women’s Day. The first of these took place on 19th March 1911.

Traditionally, International Women’s Day provides a focus for women to speak to each other The day is now celebrated in numerous countries including Azerbaijan, Uganda, Guinea-Bissau and Montenegro. In some countries such as China and Nepal, the day is recognised as being important enough to actually warrant being designated a holiday for women. Elsewhere, in locations as diverse as Cambodia and Kazakhstan, it has become a national holiday incorporating men, women and children, and in those countries where there is no Mother’s Day, International Women’s Day has become a day of tribute to women that incorporates cards and

26

presents and general family celebrations. Traditionally, International Women’s Day provides a focus for women to speak to each other, something that women are fabulous at doing! They can also speak to their communities, their nations and the world. Women speak about business, politics, celebrity, art, entrepreneurialism, health, sexuality and feminine life roles. Seminars, conferences, lunches, dinners and breakfasts are attended by women who focus on sharing experiences and offering advice, training and opportunities for women that will benefit them in the future. Globally, throughout the last 100 years, we have seen vast in-roads made in equality and emancipation and so the idea of International Women’s Day, to a huge number of British women, is virtually meaningless. Women have mixed feelings in the UK because the younger generation particularly, feel that they have no battles left to fight and feminism as a word and a concept has slipped out of fashion. But in reality this is not the case; there is still far too much to do and we need to take both a global and a local perspective. One hundred years after the very first International Women’s Day was held, (when no woman had the vote at all) women still do not participate in business and politics as men do. Very few women receive the same pay and benefits as men do. Women live longer than men and experience more poverty. Globally, and locally, there are issues of repression and violence against women, and these are challenges that we need to eliminate from a civilised world. A quick meander through the internet hasn’t uncovered any local activities taking place to celebrate International Women’s Day throughout the Lake District. Further afield however, in Lancaster on 8th March at The Park Hotel at 8 pm, Franca

Rame’s A Woman Alone (and other stories) is being performed by local artists. In Manchester, you can attend any number of plays and films, poetry readings, seminars or charity cake sales. There’s a fabulous event called ‘Paint Yourself as a Goddess’ which is a workshop taking place in Liverpool on February 15-17th, and in Manchester from 26th-28th April. However, there really is no reason to go that far afield. In the spirit of International Women’s Day, why not create your own event and networking opportunities? The whole purpose of International Women’s Day is to bring women together to celebrate being women, to discuss achievements, desires and aspirations. The spirit of the day is to pass your knowledge and experience on to others. Within your town, village, hamlet or community you could teach another woman to do something they don’t know how to do. Hold a craft class or a market, a dance, drama, singing or fitness taster. Lose your inhibitions. Have fun, be silly, and laugh together or debate, rant or be serious; but raise some money for

a great cause. Amnesty, Oxfam and the Red Cross have plenty of ideas about fund raising on their websites and list female specific charities you can raise money for. Or you can choose a cause close to your heart. Even if you just meet up for a coffee and a slice of cake and read this article to a female friend and then both agree to chuck a few coins in a charity box, you will be making a difference. Go ahead! Get involved for the sake of international women and the future of womankind, and in the name of women everywhere.

interior design

Interior design

for work or home What a Designer can do for you

What A Designer Can Do For You When most people think of interior design, they tend to picture celebrities with big bank accounts and designers with even bigger ego’s. At Luci Living Design, we want to dispel this myth, and are passionate in our belief that real people with real budgets can still benefit from interior design. Here, we provide a brief introduction to the industry, explaining what an interior designer actually does, the truth behind the price tag, and how this can all work for you, the consumer.

What does an interior designer do? Contrary to popular belief, it is much more complex than dealing with simple aesthetics, which merely scratches the surface of what a truly talented designer can achieve. Creating a consummate interior design is all about developing a sense of harmony throughout the space, and requires a consideration of all the necessary particulars, from grand overall layouts to the smallest design details. Indeed, designers have to retain a constant sense of practical purpose, ensuring that results are visually pleasing, whilst also accounting for less glamorous practicalities, such as the position and distribution of cabling. Only by adopting this integrated approach can a designer create a space that is both beautiful and functional, reflecting the specific needs and requirements of each client.

30

When to choose to use an interior designer and how to work with them… Before beginning any project, it’s important to ask yourself one question: realistically, can I complete this successfully on my own? If there’s even a shred of doubt in your response, then consider consulting an interior designer. Many homeowners assume they can take on design jobs themselves and often end up with costly and disappointing results. With a qualified designer you are far more likely to end up with a professional finish which actually exceeds your initial expectations. To help move the process along,

before you consult an interior designer, begin collecting samples or images from rooms you like to help articulate your own design ideas. Fabric swatches, paint chips and furniture catalogues are all fantastic sources of information to present to your designer when you begin to develop your initial scheme. In addition, it’s useful to have a definite list of features that are ‘must-haves’. Share this information with the designer to ensure the resulting scheme remains sensitive to your specific needs.

On a similar note, if you are planning to include a designer, then seek to involve them at the earliest possible opportunity, particularly if you are building from scratch. After all, prevention is better than cure, and it is much easier to move the position of a door on a drawing than after the wall has gone up. When flooring plans are still being created, an interior designer can review the overall flow of the building, often giving invaluable advice on room configurations, to help develop a space that truly works. Moreover, if you are looking for a really unique finish, then designers are a great means of gaining access to a vast selection of products, materials and furnishings that are only available to the trade, and will help your home to

The Face of Windermere & Kendal

stand out from the crowd. Even with the most talented of designer’s, it’s rare that any customer will love 100 percent of their suggestions straight away. Don’t be too quick to dismiss anything. Keep an open mind and remain flexible. Ask the designer why they chose a particular style, pattern or feature, and why they think it is appropriate for the space you’re designing. Make sure you continue to work together and use their creative-eye to narrow down the wide array of available options, to find those that are suitable to your budget, resources and personal tastes.

What most people find surprising is the suggestion that, in many circumstances, an interior designer may actually be able to save you money. Whilst it may seem counterintuitive, a qualified designer can create an overall vision for your project, including providing a practical schedule and estimated budget. With good drawings and clear specifications, you can therefore ensure that the project will avoid costly overruns and change orders. But the true job of an interior

Benefits and costs… As mentioned, this seems to be the main area of concern for many people when considering whether to seek out a designer’s services. Whilst it is true that certain wellknown professionals do charge exorbitant fees, there are plenty of dedicated and extremely talented designers who can be contracted for a far more reasonable price. So, if you’re on a bit of a budget, don’t make the mistake of assuming an interior designer is out of your financial reach. Many designers will offer a free initial consultation, assessing your design dilemma and providing an overview of your various options available. Similarly, there are usually several pricing structures, so if you can’t stretch to a full-scale refurbishment, designers will still be happy to help source furnishings and offer advice on providing a few small-scale decorative accents. What is absolutely vital, is to ask a designer to specify their billing procedures prior to the initial consultation. Determine exactly when you’ll be charged and what for; this way you can anticipate any costs further down the line and won’t be caught unawares by an unexpected bill.

designer is to save you time as well as money. We take over the stress and strain that comes with any renovation project and ensure that your vision is faithfully transformed into reality. Remember: your home is probably the most expensive asset you possess, and is well worth investing in. That’s not to say that cost isn’t important, but it is not the only factor worth considering when deciding how to manage your renovation.

Where to look, who to choose… If you have decided to take the plunge and hire an interior designer, the next challenge is to choose the right designer for the job. Our advice is to look local. Try to obtain references and opinions from previous clients, as this is by far the best and most reliable endorsement of a designer’s skill. Also try specialist

websites, such as www.houzz. com, which provides reviews and details for various design companies throughout the world. You can even look for rooms that match your own taste and then contact the designer involved directly.

Design hints and tips: If you’re not looking for a major refurbishment and instead just want a few little tricks to help spruce up an existing design, then here are some handy suggestions. In 2013, quirky is king, so try using bespoke joinery rather than flat pack storage furniture. This has the practical advantage of saving huge amounts of space, whilst also providing an economic means of putting your own unique stamp on a room. Also try introducing a few splashes of bold colour, either in the form of a feature wall or new soft furnishings. This year, the two main contenders are Emerald Green and Indigo Night, both of which will lend an air of sumptuous luxury to any space. The decision to hire an interior designer may seem daunting, but in reality it is relatively straightforward. All you have to do is determine how much help you really want or need, and which aspects of the design process you prefer to manage yourself. If your budget permits, then hiring an interior designer could save you a lot of time and stress, whilst also making sure you end up with a stunning and functional interior space. If you would like to learn more, or require a free initial design consultation, then please get in contact with us at Luci Living Design.

SEO and PPC, the Basics! SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is fundamental to the internet marketing of your website. Done correctly it will help make your website appear on the first page of a search engine such as Google and increase the number of people accessing your site. Commonly internet users will only scan the first page or second page of their search results so if you’re not on these pages your visitor numbers will suffer. SEO works by making your website easy to understand for search engines such as Google. It is a technique used to increase the visibility of a given site helping get traffic from the “organic” or “natural” listings on search engines. All major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing have such results, where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine considers most relevant to users. No payment is required. PPC or Pay Per Click is a form of search engine advertising such as Google Adwords, that will display an advert when triggered by a search phrase that a user has typed in. SEO is sometimes seen as a scam and certainly we have seen dubious operators in the market. But think about it – Google wants to return the best results it can for a search phrase that a user types. How else is it going to know whether your site is a good match to that search phrase other than by reading your site and deciding how to rank it. So all the SEO process is, is good housekeeping. Correct labels (or keyword phrases) make sense don’t they? When these are used well and good content is written, Google is happy. If you try and scam them into returning a result, they will track you down. At GAP PR and Marketing we see SEO as a wise investment as it increases the visibility of your website and therefore chances of selling your ideas and products to more potential customers. Investing in SEO has helped many of our own clients reach top 5 rankings and this leads to better sales. PPC is an excellent way of driving traffic to your site, but there is a cost so careful attention to the landing page on your website and monitoring of the results is vital. This type of advertising is an excellent way of picking up additional search traffic for the less popular or “long-tail” phrases. These are the ones that are slightly different to the most popular or obvious choices but which are still relevant. Often they are even more relevant as they can be more detailed. We recommend PPC for businesses that sell online or have a specific well defined service to promote. General browsers don’t convert to sales very easily but specific ones do. So better to spend your money picking up those people who are ready to buy than those who are just idly searching. If you’re not sure is either SEO or PPC is right for you, drop us a line with a link to your website and we will take a look for you.

Come and try our record-breaking services says Virgin Trains CEO

Virgin Trains’ customers have given Virgin Trains its highest ever score in the most recent national survey of rail passenger satisfaction. The rail watchdog Passenger Focus carries out large-scale independent research across the industry twice a year, and today released the results of its Autumn 2012 survey. 92% of Virgin Trains’ customers rated their overall experience as ‘satisfactory’ or ‘good’. This is the highest overall satisfaction rating achieved by a long-distance franchise since research began in 1999. Maintaining its long run of success, Virgin Trains’ score beats the company’s own recordbreaking satisfaction score of 91% achieved in the Spring 2012 survey. As well as rating their overall experience, customers also rate individual aspects of service. Among a number of high scores, Virgin Trains has again achieved the highest rating of any longdistance franchise when passengers were quizzed on the speed of their journey. The 94% satisfaction score means Virgin Trains has outpaced other longdistance rail franchise operators for speed over eight

successive surveys. Virgin Trains’ Chief Executive Officer, Tony Collins said: “Our customers have given a clear message to anyone who hasn’t travelled on the West Coast mainline for a while: our services are fast and our staff are fantastic. We’re grateful to our customers for recognising us in this way. If you’re not yet one of our customers - come and give us a try. We know we’re not perfect and there are clear areas where we need to improve. Our station scores remain above most other train operators but below our usual high standards and I am determined to bring these scores up to those we achieve in other aspects of our service. The weaker scores relate to the condition and facilities of some stations and we are about to make some changes at several stations, which will be visible to customers in the next few months. We are also in discussion with the Department for Transport about more major work that could be carried out at a few stations, which would bring lasting improvements for customers.”

It is this time of year when festival organisers scurry to secure the last of their headline acts in a bid to draw larger and more diverse audiences to their events. However, very few are set in such picturesque locations as the ‘Bowness Bay Blues ‘weekender, which is situated on the Eastern shore of Lake Windermere. The lake itself is famed for being the largest natural lake in England. So, what better way to spend your weekend than lapping up the expectant sun, whilst the airwaves are filled with the sound of Blues, performed by a host of critically acclaimed and nationally celebrated Blues musicians and artists. With the success of 2012’s Bowness Bay Blues festival still the hot topic in the local community, it was with much anticipation that the announcement was made to bring Blues to the area once more, in March 2013. With some 10 venues agreeing to host musicians and artists for live sets during the weekend, it is also a chance to experience the warmth of independent businesses and establishments as you settle into a calm and relaxing programme of music. Guitar virtuoso Ben Poole headlines the opening night and has recently been described as ‘Unmissable’ and a ‘Rising Talent’. Furthermore, Blues sensations and world renowned icons Jeff Beck and Gary Moore have spoken very highly of Ben Poole and his musicianship. Having released his debut album in the latter half of 2012, his UK and European tour accommodates the Bowness Bay Blues festival. Also joining the bill is Buzz Elliot, who boasts a catalogue of work which has inspired many

a budding guitarist, including accolades of sharing the stage with the likes of Uriah Heep and Michael Schenker. A dedicated guitar player since the late 1960’s, he is much respected in the field by his peers and the crowd is sure to gather around his feet for a terrific set. For those wishing to experience renditions of classic rock anthems, look no further than Lancaster based trio Tin Pan Alley. Inspired by the iconic work of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Rory Gallagher and more, this accomplished group are one of the finest around and you’ll be hard pushed

not to be impressed by the level of competence and ability on display. It is relatively rare to find an exclusively harmonica-driven blues band on UK shores. However, The Magic Dragons proudly name the Bowness Bay Blues weekender as their first UK festival. With a lineup of talented individuals, including three-time British Blues Award winning harp player Giles King, it is without question that The Magic Dragons are a sensation. Other artists include: Stark, Bullfrogs, Snakewater, Fuschi 4, Dan Burnett and the Elderly Brothers who all come with a repertoire of foot-tapping numbers to excite the senses and provide additional sparks of magic to this

atmospheric event. Between 22nd and 24th March, the most difficult decision you’ll have to make is which band you wish to enjoy the performances of. As attendance numbers rise year on year, and with more fans and music lovers venturing from further afield, it won’t be long before the Bowness Bay Blues weekender is nationally recognised as being one of the finest of its kind. For those wishing to travel, a variety of accommodation choices are available, from camping in the beautiful local countryside to staying in a 5* AA rated country house and breathtaking hotels. Without question, you’ll find it hard to resist a 3-day pass to this memorable event. It is also worth noting that a number of these facilities are pet friendly and you’ll find countless walks within minutes of your chosen place of rest. The Bowness Bay Blues weekender is organised and run by the Rotary Club of Windemere. For full details of the event, please visit www.bownessbayblues.co.uk

Brathay Trust - a charity with the mission to improve the life chances of children and young people. They do this by inspiring them to engage positively in their communities. They recognise that young people face many challenges in their day to day lives and they work with some of the most vulnerable and ‘hard-toreach’ individuals, helping them to develop the confidence, motivation and skills that they need to unlock their potential and make positive changes in their lives. Cumbria Citizen’s Advice Bureau - aiming to provide much needed advice and improving the policies and practices that affect people’s lives. They provide free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone, with regards to their rights and responsibilities and value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination. What are you waiting for? Come along, enjoy yourself and help our charities. We look forward to seeing you! Amy – Sure to Surprise You P.S. Are you interested in a stall to showcase your business? local walking

Now the weather is getting better, you might want to try this local walk from Norman Buckley’s book ‘More Lakeland Walking’

The Face of Windermere & Kendal

Cunswick Scar, Kendal The outward route of this circuit is through farming countryside bisected by the main Kendal bypass road, with a return along the top of Cunswick Scar. The scar is part of the rim of limestone surrounding the older rocks which comprise the core of the Lake District. As with the better known Scout Scar, immediately to the south (ref. the author’s ‘Lakeland Walking on the Level’ – Sigma Press), a steep scarp, high in part, faces west. The resultant views over the upper reaches of the Lyth valley to the Lake District mountains are very fine indeed, ranging from the Coniston fells, Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and Langdale Pikes round to the mountains grouped above Kentmere. Much of the face of the scar is wooded and the views improve as progress is made along the top. As in the case of Scout Scar, the botanical interest rests largely on the assortment of lime loving plants, rare or absent from the Lake District proper. Distance 5 km (3¼ miles) Rise and fall Approximately 400 feet (122 metres), mainly in two sections. Firstly, close to the start and latterly in the rise from the by-pass to the top of the scar. No really steep gradients Underfoot No problems, although by no means all the public rights of way are marked on the ground. Particularly good along the top of the scar. Half a mile along the side of the Crook Road at the end of the walk Maps Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure no. 7, The English Lakes, South Eastern area, 1:25,000 or Landranger no. 97, Kendal to Morecambe, 1:50,000 Start/Parking Good sized lay-by on the Windermere to Kendal road (A5284) 100 metres or so on the Kendal side of the huge roundabout. Grid reference 499945 The Walk Walk along the side of the road towards Kendal for a few metres, then turn right at a gate to pass through a tunnel under the roadway of the by-pass. Bear left along the obvious trackway, ascending steadily. Kendal Fell, largely occupied by the golf course, rises just beyond the bypass. Grayrigg Forest and the Howgill Fells are in view further to the east. Go straight through Helsfell Farm, and turn right 20 metres after the exit gate to head for a stile which shows as a gap in the wall at the top of the field. Angle left, aiming just to the right of two isolated stunted hawthorn trees. Two stiles, with yellow arrow, give access to the bridge

which carries the path high over the by-pass. At the far end of the bridge another ladder stile offers a choice of yellow arrows. Turn right to follow a footpath faintly marked on the ground, heading above the line of trees ahead. Just before a cattle grid turn right, over a high ladder stile, and go down the field, bearing a little left as the buildings of Boundary Bank are seen to the right, ahead. Go over a ladder stile at the bottom and carry on down an old lane, a little rough underfoot, to a gate. Cross a farm access road to a path over cut grass and a stile. Cross the by-pass and ascend the steepish bank on the far side to a sign and a footpath diversion notice. Take the indicated line to a field boundary wall and turn left, uphill. Go over two stiles in quick succession and continue uphill past a post with yellow arrow to a stile over the wall ahead. The way now lies over more open ground to the top of the scar, marked by a stone wall along the top of the scarp. A gap to the left of the trees gives a first prospect of the wonderful Lake District panorama which is such an important part of this walk. Just below are what appear to be the remains of a lime kiln. Turn right to walk north along the limestone top, delightfully dry underfoot and with the views improving steadily as progress is made. In common with some other very modest heights, Cunswick Fell provides a fine viewing gallery. There is some up and down but gradients are nowhere steep. At forks keep left, generally close to the top of the scarp, but ignore the signposted track on the left which descends through Scar Wood. After almost 1 mile reach an arrowed stile and turn left to another stile in a few yards. Cross a narrow field to yet another stile and turn hard right to follow a clear path along the top of the bank. Descend steadily through the edge of woodland, largely ash and hawthorn, with bramble undergrowth and some conifer planting. Go over two more stiles and across the middle of a little meadow to a stile giving access to the Crook (Bowness to Kendal) Road. Turn right to return to the car parking lay-by. The road is your catwalk

When car modification and personalisation are mentioned, the mind seems to jump to hot-headed twenty-somethings in outrageously extravagant cars that have glowing lights pouring out of every orifice and sounds which resemble a missile launch. However, principal British designer, Afzal Kahn, has been at the forefront of automotive design for more than two decades. Specialising in higher-end cars, the hallmark of his company A. Kahn Design is its lack of pretence. The business is not just a design house for wheels, interiors and cars – it is more than that. It is in fact a tailor’s shop where the most exclusive of cars can b e personalised. What is important to note however, is that you don’t need a Ferrari or a Lamborghini to pay a visit to Mr Kahn’s laboratory; you also don’t need to buy an already fully designed car. He and his team offer a range of designs and accessories for a wide range of cars. If the Audi A5, Jeep Wrangler or the Land Rover Discovery you own needs a bit of a redesign - then Kahn Design can offer a selection of designs for your specific model. These features include bespoke interior designs and accessories, exterior accessories and aerodynamic styling, wheel packages and you can

44

even buy a personalised number plate from the man who famously purchased Britain’s most expensive number plate ‘F1’ back in 2008 for a sizeable £465,000. Afzal Kahn’s mantra is: “The road is my catwalk” and the company philosophy is to always give the customers what they want. The idea is that the Kahn Design team provide with you with a menu filled with bespoke options and you as a customer can pick and choose the accessories and designs in order to create a vehicle to your exact specification.

The Face of Windermere & Kendal

You could go for an all-out transformation that would make your car barely recognisable; or you could go for the preferred subtle touch by allowing Afzal Kahn to design you a vehicle with full colour change (to a colour of your choice) and an interior akin to, let’s say, your favourite leather reclining chair in your living room. Another option would be, for security purposes, to have privacy tinted glass with ‘anti smash and grab’ protection. Customers could also change the colour of the clock, or indeed, ask for anything else. A Kahn Design Limited was originally incorporated in 1998. It began as a company which designed and sold alloy wheels. After designing the RS-R wheel; the first wheel with a spoke that ran to the very edge of the rim, a design which is now replicated worldwide, Afzal Kahn’s products became famous across the globe. Furthermore, in 2003 the company invested heavily in the latest manufacturing materials technonology and advanced into designing complete vehicles. Now, with ten years of experience and thousands of satisfied customers, Kahn Design is held in international high regard. This is why you will see Kahn products in and around the smarter streets of London, New York and Shanghai. The common denominator is the Kahn brand. In automotive terms, A. Kahn Design is the ultimate designer label. What makes Kahn Design work so well is that it can cater for all car owners. Although there is an emphasis on high-end cars, that should not put you off as that is not their sole target. Kahn Design can work with many different cars; this is highlighted by the fact that the company’s reputation has been built largely on its work with Range Rovers. You don’t need a Ferrari…

Kahn Design is based at Kahn Laboratories on 240 Canal Road, Bradford, BD1 4SX. They can be contacted via telephone (01274 74 99 99) or email: KAHN@KAHNDESIGN.COM.
