LOCAL NEWS

Welwyn Wailers Amateur Dramatic Society

Welwyn Wailers Amateur Dramatic Society was formed 40 years ago by local doctor Roger Aubrey with the intention of raising funds to support local charities. Its first five productions were pantomimes and then it was reformed in 1982 as a Music Hall group under the direction of Brian King, MBE. They have raised more than £175,000 for charity over the last 30 years. The group supports Welwyn’s two hospitals, Danesbury and Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital, the Sue Ryder Home at Stagenhoe and perform ‘mini shows’ at those hospitals for the patients. Among the other charitable causes supported is the Isabel Hospice, Welwyn Wailers presented them with their very first donation. They also support Herts Air Ambulance, MacMillan Cancer Care, local playgroups and clubs for the elderly and many other local charities. Welwyn Wailers’ first production of 2013 is “Our Ruby Wailing” which will be performed on Friday 1st, Saturday 2nd, Friday 8th and Saturday 9th February 2013 at 7.30 pm in Welwyn Civic Centre (Prospect Place, Welwyn, AL6 9ER) . There is a licensed bar and a fish and chip supper is provided. Tickets are available from 01438 715979 and priced at £12 (£10 on 1st February).

Preston Cricket Club

Established 130 years ago, Preston Cricket Club offers some of the best cricketing facilities in the region. They play both Saturday and Sunday cricket, with 4 teams in the Saracens Hertfordshire Cricket League on Saturday’s (Div 2, 5, 11, 12) and 2 (sometimes 3) teams on a Sunday playing a mixture of league cricket and development matches.

Their well established Colts Development Programme introduces children from the ages of 7 to 16 to cricket through a well structured training programme run on Sunday mornings, coached by a ECB trained, CRB registered coaching team. They actively encourage their younger members to get involved off the pitch and look to get them playing senior games as soon as they feel comfortable once they reach appropriate the age. Mark Waters told us, “Being a well organised club with a focus on youth development, safety and family involvement, we continue to thrive and offer competitive cricket for all. We are well known for our social activities including an annual Tour, League Football Team, League Darts team, Hiking Society; we don’t close down because the cricket season finishes in September. We are always looking to welcome new members, individuals and families, so please get in touch if you are looking to play cricket at any standard or introduce your child to the game or indeed wish to explore us as a club further. We are only 5 minutes by car from Hitchin.” For further information, please contact Mark Waters on 07796 544 683.

WELLBEING

Success

for 2013

O

ur life is like a road.Think of it as a motorway with lots of side roads. Sometimes everything is going well and we are moving fast in the right direction. However, sometimes we get side tracked and end up on another road, and other times it seems like we are way off course, have hit a bumpy road, or even a road block. So, thinking of 2012, were you on a motorway? Was your journey planned or did it seem like a pretty aimless year? For instance if you had plotted it into your Sat Nav are you in a better place now than where you were last January? Let’s make 2013 even better. There will be many journeys this year and wouldn’t it be great if each one were taking you someplace exciting. Are you ready to put your foot to the floor for some adventure? And, thinking of yourself as that vehicle; are you a sleek racing car; or an older model with some rust, some dints, very little power, and perhaps no spare in the boot; or maybe you are a younger model that’s been a bit thrashed with the wrong fuel and little attention? It’s not much use expecting a great road ahead if the car hasn’t the power and resources to travel it! Not forgetting that while a car can be easily replaced, your body can’t. You are stuck with it for your entire life.

You can, however, get it fixed

Maybe you haven’t been firing on all cylinders and an energy tune up would help. That will make a huge difference immediately. Then you can learn to recharge your batteries with decent sleep.Things holding you back like smoking, frustration, stress, pain, guilt and anger

can be found and freed. Fear, insecurity, anxiety and worries can be flushed away. Overweight, lethargy, lack of confidence, even depression, can also be cleared. Let’s get rid of the blockages, the potholes and obstacles in the way. Let’s open and smooth your road ahead, let it become clearer, far easier to travel. Be open to new opportunities along the way. Success is within us all. Make 2013 a far better year, perhaps a brilliant year, starting with a decent ‘tune up’, an MOT, and then some help to programme your mind and body for success. Get yourself on the right road, then put your foot down, enjoy the scenery, and feel the wind through your hair. Gentle, supportive, assistance to deal with all New Years Resolutions so you are free to have an amazing year. Come for a special 2 hour January MOT to set yourself up for 2013 success.

UHY WKH – Small Businesses Adam Fernandes, Business Development Manager from UHY WKH Partnership Chartered Accountants talks about his firm and the services they can provide small businesses…

A

s this year comes to an end and we all look towards enjoying some time off with family and friends during the festive season, we know that small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) are being still being hit hard by the struggling economy. So as the NewYear looms and small businesses look to the future, and how they can continue to provide cost effective and up to date services, it may be time to review how your accountants and tax advisers can help you. With offices in Letchworth, Royston and Cambridge, UHY WKH Partnership is ideally positioned to service clients across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. The practice is derived from a number of practices, including two long-established North Hertfordshire firms – Wickham, Hunt & Co (established 1862) and Watts Knowles (established 1903). We specialise in providing accountancy, financial and taxation expertise and business advisory services to a wide variety of businesses. Everyone deserves, and gets, the same level of enthusiastic involvement that defines our practice.

Adaptable, enthusiastic, professional and effective!

We pride ourselves in being adaptable (all clients are

different), enthusiastic (they often need an infusion of positivity), professional (it goes with the territory) and, above all, effective! Can’t get a pro-active response from your own accountants? Then come and have a chat with us. Or if you feel it’s time for a change, you’ll find our approach refreshing and effective. As well as ensuring that your tax liabilities are legally minimised and the financial affairs of you and your business are up to date, as you would expect of any good accountant, there is much more we can offer you to give you peace of mind and to free up your time to deal with the things that you enjoy. • Worried about the impact of current employment law? • Fed up with the time it takes dealing with your payroll? • Would rather spend the weekend enjoying yourself rather than keeping your books up to date? • Worried about whether you are completing your Vat returns correctly? • Need help looking to raise finance? • Just need someone to talk to about your business?

If the answer to any of these is yes then UHY WKH Partnership can help you.

If you would like to talk to me in the first instance please call me anytime on 01462 687333 or 07850 504044

Collaborative law for family dispute resolution

C

ollaborative law is a radical and effective approach to dispute resolution. Each person appoints their own lawyer but instead of conducting negotiations between the parties by letter or phone, the parties themselves meet, together with their lawyers, to work things out face to face. Each party has their lawyer by their side throughout the entire process and will therefore benefit from legal advice as matters progress. The aim of collaborative law is to resolve family disputes without going to court. Underpinning the whole collaborative process is the “participation agreement” where the couple commit themselves to the process. The agreement will set out the basic rules of the collaborative process, one of the most important being that if either party commences court proceedings, both lawyers must cease to act and the parties must find new lawyers to act for them in court proceedings. The participation agreement embodies another fundamental principle; that both the couple themselves and their respective lawyers will act in good faith throughout the process. Having established the ground rules, the parties set out their objectives in an anchor statement. This is a very useful document. Inevitably, differences will arise during negotiations and it is helpful to remind parties of their objectives which, more often than not, are shared. The process of negotiation involves “4-way meetings” where the couple and their lawyers meet to discuss the issues arising upon the breakdown of the relationship. Having all the parties present in the meeting allows the couple to retain control of the process and work towards a solution that is best suited for their own unique circumstances. Rather than taking an adversarial or confrontational approach, the emphasis is on solving problems. The lawyers work together to achieve this. Often other neutral experts are brought into the process to assist the couple, such as an independent accountant or financial adviser. Notes are taken at each meeting and a list of actions to be taken before the next meeting is agreed. The parties will “debrief ” with their own lawyer, reviewing issues discussed as well as issues to be discussed at the next meeting. The process is fairly streamlined as there are no letters to pass back and forth between the lawyers. 12

The process will involve as many meetings as is necessary to achieve agreement. Usually, this will involve about four meetings, but each relationship and family is different. Once an agreement is achieved, the lawyers draw it up into a document which is then sent to the court for judicial approval. The courts are very supportive of the collaborative process and have provided a streamlined process to approve agreements. The collaborative process is growing organically due to its own success. Couples find that the process allows them to retain control of negotiations and deal with the issues that have arisen with dignity.Where there are children this is particularly important as though the marriage may have ended, the family has not. Jeremy Chandler-Smith of JCS Solicitors in Codicote is a solicitor specialising in family law and is a an accredited specialist member of Resolution, the national organisation of family lawyers committed to non-confrontational divorce, separation and other family problems. Jeremy is also a Collaborative Lawyer and Resolution trained Mediator.

A History of St Ippolyts S

t Ippolyts is located in between the A602 and the B656, two kilometres south-east of Hitchin and is set in agricultural countryside with plenty of natural vegetation and parkland. The name of St Ippolyts, although spelled in a variety of ways, is derived from St Hippolytus to whom the village church was dedicated. According to Daphne Rance in her book on the parish “St. Ippolyts: a country parish in the nineteenth century (1987) at various times also known as Epolites, Pallets, Nipples or St Ibbs. The church was built in 1087 in a beautiful setting on the hillside above the village. According to the church records, the building was funded by grants supplied by Judith de Lens, the niece of William the Conqueror. De Lens gave evidence against her husband, a Saxon Earl, which led to his execution. The funding of the church was an attempt to make amends for this act. The little village that grew up around the church naturally took its name but it was not until 1283 that name SYppollitus, then Polytes in 1406 and Seynt Ippollitts in 1518 appeared. There are various spellings extant today although the 19th century parochial spelling of St Ippolyts is now the official one for both the village and the parish. In the 18th century increasing long-distance traffic through the parish prompted the formation of a Turnpike Trust to improve the main roads and roadside inns such as the Dragon Inn (formerly the Greyhound, rebuilt in 1900) and The Black Horse (now New England) did a good trade. However this was to change with the opening of the Great Northern Railway in 1850 but the roads became busy again with the advent of the bicycle and even more so with motor vehicles. The main activity in the parish was farming or related jobs. At first, under the feudal rules laid down by the 18

manor courts of Almshoe and Maydencroft (the latter functioned until 1929 and was often held in The Bull at Gosmore) and later at the will of individual owners as the common land was gradually privatised culminating in the Enclosure Act. When the first census was taken in 1801, the population was 464. In the 19th century the population increased rapidly leading to overcrowded cottages and poor pay: riots flared up among the labourers during the Enclosure and again in 1831.To make ends meet, the women and children spent time plaiting straw into long braids to be stitched into straw hats at Luton but this source of income faded in the 1870s when cheaper plait was imported from China. However the better off people began to take more responsibility by founding the school in 1847 and the first of its many extensions in 1871, repairing the dilapidated church in 1838 followed by the restoration of the nave and aisles also building an organ chamber and north vestry in 1878. At the beginning of the 20th century many people had left to find work in the towns and the population fell to 762, but improvements were soon to come. In 1914 Gosmore Green was established by the pond (now dry) that had given the name Goose Mere to the village; in 1921 the first council houses were built, piped water replaced the well-water that had caused earlier outbreaks of cholera; in 1931 electricity came; the Parish Hall was built in 1939 and soon after the Recreation Ground was laid out. In 1969 St Ippolyts green was created following the demolition of eighteen old cottages. Dell Field, a community area was set out in 1981 and the parish hall was extended and refurbished in 1999 as a Millennium Project.

The downside is the high maintenance, lower energy efficiency and recently the cost will almost always exceed that of plastic. But plastic won’t always give you the aesthetics you may desire, or your property commands. However, there is now a product range on the market which does tick all the boxes and are manufactured just up the A1 in Biggleswade. The Storm range of windows and doors offers a very high quality wood-grain effect UPVC product which replicates the visual detailed beauty of traditional wood but with the major benefits of plastic. With full draught exclusion, weather proofing and noise reduction as well as significant maintenance reduction, they address the areas natural products are weaker in, particularly important with the recent rise in fuel tariffs. Not only that but the nature of the products allow for more light to permeate as the frames are narrower while still maintaining the traditional timber sight lines. They don’t just come in white but a range of effects and colours (heritage greens being particularly popular at the moment)

and to increase the light in the room further, the range can be coloured externally only. To further enhance the traditional look, leading and Georgian bars can be added and – the smallest of details to truly authenticate the look – a variety of handles, including the epitomy of the English country cottage, black or pewter monkey tail ironmongery can even be an option. Not something you would ever imagine sitting on plastic! To truly demonstrate the Storm authentic look, we have had several customers whose applications have passed the stringent Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation requirements. So, far from being purely functional, plastic really can improve the overall look, efficiency and function of your home, and without the maintenance it will certainly add to your precious time too!
