WELCOME
Well here we are in April only a few weeks away from the “Royal Wedding” and a lovely extra day off for most of us! Do we have any “Golden Ticket” holders in the villages? The Royal Couple have recreated the Roald Dahl classic ’Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ style “Golden Ticket”. Each of the lucky winners will be invited to attend the ceremony at Westminster Abbey, followed by the wedding reception, which is rumoured will be held at Buckingham Palace. This month’s issue is packed with many new features and articles for you to read. Hatfield House is celebrating its 400th birthday and we are giving away 3 sets of family tickets to the new Farm attraction, see the competition on page 31. Also don’t forget to email us with any local stories and events so we can include them next month. Happy Easter

MORE CASH NEEDED FOR NEW SPORTS & COMMUNITY FACILITIES The current Codicote sports and community facilities were built in memory of a young local teacher, John Clements, who was awarded the George Cross after giving his life to save 35 children in a hotel fire in Italy in 1976. The people of Codicote have invested over £0.5 million to date and now want to replace the ageing, inadequate sports centre with a new £1.7m multi sports/community centre in 2012. An application has been made to the National Lottery via Sport England / the NGBS and to other bodies for large scale funding. In the meantime a newly established fund raising charity registered no.1139009 – The John Clements Sports and Community Trust – is busy raising funds locally and further afield. To date £200,000 has been raised and it is clear from the work so far that the more money and support they can raise locally, the better chance there is of getting major support from the large funders, so any support you can offer/create would be greatly appreciated, They need YOUR help NOW to reach the £1.7m! Further details can be found on the website www.jc-codicote. org. A business and development plan is available from Jim Park – Project Director on 01438 820325 or parkiejfh@aol.com

WELLBEING
Those worrying anxious feelings Approximately 80% of people I see come with anxiety of one form or another. Anything from presentation anxiety to driving and flying anxieties, and then to deep rooted worries from maybe sexual abuse, bereavements, relationship issues or a myriad of others.
I
f you have anxiety you will know what I mean. You are in a certain situation and then all of a sudden your palms get sweaty, your heart starts pounding, your chest feels tight, maybe your breathing becomes shallow. You tense up, a knot develops in your stomach, or butterflies. Maybe you feel nauseous, have trouble thinking clearly or speaking legibly. Most sufferers just want 6
to run and hide. This is not nice. In most cases as one symptom is felt the next one is anticipated, and then the next. This self monitoring makes the symptoms develop more. The expectation is there, they will happen. And the worst thing about this is that it happens more frequently and you have no control over it. This can be very frightening and certainly saps energy, and self confidence. In severe cases I have found people will stay at home, or avoid situations, so they don’t feel embarrassed in front of others.
I know women can get this way, especially when they feel self conscious about their weight, and often weight issues go right back to childhood anxieties. And I know men can get anxious when it comes to work presentations and they often find they cannot progress in their jobs until they deal with it. Children can get like this, too, often as a result of bullying or verbal abuse, or just pressure to meet their parents’ expectations. The trick is to break the pattern in a safe and helpful way, and it can be done quite easily if one just asks for the right, objective help to do so. And the nicest thing is that when these old responses are released all of a sudden the world opens up and so many nice things happen. I had a lovely 16 year old boy come for help to relieve his flying anxiety prior to a school trip. It took three sessions to deal with his issues. He not only had a great trip but the anxiety he had experienced at exam time was gone. He was more relaxed, more self confident, and his mother commented on his new maturity. It was a good result for the whole family. Perhaps you know of someone who feels anxious in some way? Please suggest they seek help. These are things that can be worked on and relieved. Life is too short to waste in worry, fear and tightness. If anyone wants to know more do visit my website and check out the stress and anxiety page and then call for a chat. Maybe I can help. ECONOMY
The economy from a local insurance broker’s point of view
W
e were all wondering what 2011 would be like. With Christmas 2010 and the NewYear passing by at a blur, it was thoughts of family and relaxing that pushed prospects of business and the UK economy from our minds in 2011. Now here we are with Easter and a Royal wedding diverting our attention. Nevertheless, I sometimes ponder how my business is a barometer on the UK economy. As a surveyor with a local insurance broker, I visit shops, restaurants, hotels, leisure centres, Factories, warehouses and industrial estates. The number of ‘To Let’ boards is disturbing. As an industry we calculate premiums from the customer accounts. For instance Employers Liability insurance premium depends on wages. So if wages are up we are paid more brokerage [by Insurers not the client], conversely if wages are down, we are paid less and the business won’t be doing so well. We still have to have provide the appropriate insurance policy for the business, after my survey, get any claims paid- I love prising the cheques from
Insurers. The most recent spate of floods and burst pipes has varied from the small to £150,000. Is this the end of frosts and burst pipes I wonder? Then I can get on with the thefts, subsidence and injury claims. Despite little investment return on pooled premiums, Insurers are still paying claims, hurrah. Let it continue even with very little new business ventures about. I believe despite successive interference from governments, health and safety protocols, tax legal and time constrictions, we are a nation that strives as entrepreneurs and will show Europe how it’s done. I will be proud and glad to continue protecting those businesses. Well have a great year all in Welwyn and I hope our fantastic village blossoms even more. Bruce Percival Bruce has lived in Welwyn 23 years, has three children and five grandchildren, worked in London as an underwriter, surveyor and Lloyds broker and now is an associate director with www.npainsurancebroking.com for 14 years.

BUSINESS
Tax Returns – do you need help? Adam Fernandes from WKH Chartered Accountants gives essential advice...
I
t is that time of the year already where the tax man sends out his notification to complete your self assessment tax returns! The usual response is to file the tax return and delay the arduous task of compiling all your receipts for your accountant to process. Have you ever thought about: • Asking your accountant as to what is the best way to produce your books and records? So you can reduce accountancy costs and ensure your books are in good order in case HMRC decided to investigate! • How profitable your business is? Are you benefiting from all the hard work you are putting in? Could you do more? • How much tax your going to have to pay? Are you putting enough aside to avoid a big tax bill at the year end? • Where the business is going? Do you want to grow or sell the business? Have you considered your options? These are some very common issues that most SME’s are facing today. The easiest thing you can do, is to carry on as you as you are. However be warned! If you carry on
doing what you’ve always done, then you’ll always get what you’ve always got! Want more, want something better? What if: • You could speak to someone to discuss your bookkeeping? Who could advise you in the most appropriate systems for your specific needs? • You could design a bookkeeping system that gives you up to date information. So you knew the position of business and would allow you to plan? • You knew in advance how much your tax liability was going to be, so you could plan to save for it? • You could talk to someone about growing your business, selling your business, so that all your hard work was not for nothing? If you are looking for a down to earth accountant, who speaks plain English, who will spend the time with you, to understand your business, understand your goals, and who will work with you to achieve all these of things, providing you with piece of mind, as well as saving you time and money. Then please give me a call, for a free, no obligation, chat - for however long it takes, to see how I can help you. Call me anytime, Adam on 01462 687333 or 07850 504044.

BUSINESS FOCUS
Garra Rufa craze hits Kimpton!
F
ringeline Business owner Michelle has added Garra Rufa Pedicures to the list of treatments available at her salon in Kimpton. Garra Rufa Fish or Doctor fish as they are commonly known are a natural phenomenon which have been used to treat various ailments for hundreds of years.Their therapeutic properties have many healing benefits for the skin. These fish originate from the river basins of Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran and they were first discovered in the Kangal Valley in Turkey. However It is believed that the people of Turkey have known of the healing properties of Garra Rufa fish for hundreds of years as these fish seem to have a natural ability to be able to treat many skin conditions including psoriasis and eczema, apparently sufferers of psoriasis have had the most dramatic results from the treatments. Although the spas are not meant as a cure, it has been found to alleviate the symptoms of these skin conditions sometimes quite dramatically. People from all over the world have visited Turkey specifically to treat their psoriasis with a Garra Rufa massage. The beautifying effect that Garra Rufa fish have on the skin can sometimes bring great relief from psoriasis as these fish will only eat and remove any dead skin, leaving healthy skin to grow. What happens during a Garra Rufa Fish Pedicure is when you dip your feet into the spa tank the Garra Rufa fish start to gently nibble away at the dead skin, (these little fish have no teeth so cannot bite) this nibbling away enables the healthy new skin to grow. While it can be quite ticklish to begin with once you settle into it, it’s very relaxing. Pricing starts at just £10 for 20 minutes. FOR MORE INFORMATION Call Michelle now on 01438 833468 or 07879 417 295 to book a Garra Rufa Pedicure or visit the salon at 46a High St,Kimpton,Herts,SG4 8RN

Thinking of starting your own Business? he fallout of the job losses resulting from
T
the recession and continuing economic uncertainty has led to a significant increase in people choosing to start their own business as a realistic alternative to seeking employment in a rapidly shrinking jobs market. Whatever leads you start a business, there are a number of practical steps you need to take to get off the ground. This MAGIC formula will give you the edge in an increasingly competitive and tough business environment. MARKET: you know you have a great product/ service, but where is your market, who will want to buy from you, where will you find them and how will you communicate with them? ASSESS: the competition. What are they doing? How does your product compare? What unique selling point can you attach to your product/service to ensure that people will choose to buy from you? GATHER: information – find out what you need to do to set up your business, talk to professionals and get as much advice as possible. This will include finance, sales, marketing, legal compliance as well as developing a range of skills yourself required of a successful business owner. IDENTIFY: your business message – what is your brand, your strapline? How are you going to sell the product and service that you offer? How will it reflect your business brand? Test it out in a safe environment amongst family and friends. COMMUNICATE: tell people what you are doing – start to build your networks. You may have the best product in the world but if nobody knows about it they aren’t going to buy it. Attend networking groups, develop social media activities and take every opportunity that presents itself to publicise your business. ….and, be prepared to work hard! ON THE MENU
Saveur Confit de Canard This reciepe was show to me by Mme Blanchard at Maison Charente in Tusson 16700 France where she produces some of the finest confit and foie gras produce. I’ve adapted this recipe for home by using an oven to confit rather than traditional stove method for safety SERVES three 6 cumin seeds 12 coriander seeds 3 juniper berries 50g flaky sea salt 6 duck leg and thigh joints 1 small bunch thyme 1 rosemary branch 1 unpeeled garlic clove, sliced, plus 1 whole garlic bulb, halved about 500g duck fat, or enough to totally submerge the duck legs 2 bay leaves 1 tsp black peppercorns Sel Rose 1 tsp Pink peppercorns
The day before cooking, put the cumin and coriander seeds in a dry pan and toast until they are slightly coloured and aromatic. Remove to a board and crush them with the blade of a knife. Crush the juniper berries and mix with the spices and the salt. Rub the mixture over the duck, scatter with thyme, rosemary and sliced garlic and chill for 24 hrs, turning two or three times as they marinate. Next day, heat oven to 150C/130C fan/ gas 2. Wipe the duck with kitchen paper and pat dry, but don’t wash off the marinade. (The salt extracts the water from the meat cells, which will be reinflated with fat as the duck cooks gently. If you wash it, you will simply reinflate the cells with water.) Put the duck in a cast-iron casserole and cover with the goose fat or duck fat. Add the bay leaves 18
and peppercorns and cook for about 2½ hrs, or until the meat is almost falling away from the bone. You can store the duck very simply by placing it in a pudding bowl, covering it with the fat and keeping it in the fridge: as long as it stays covered with fat it will last for weeks. To cook, remove the confit duck legs from their fat. Put an ovenproof frying pan on the stove until it is hot. Add the duck legs, skin-side down, and cook for 4 mins. Turn the legs and transfer the pan to the oven for 30 mins, until crisp. Served with creamy mashed potato and seasonal vegetables. Bon Appetit, Liam Kerrigan, Head Chef Saveur Restaurant, Codicote

Socialising your puppy
I
n the early weeks ensure that your puppy has pleasant encounters with a wide range of adults, children and other animals. Make sure that you control the situations and do not overwhelm the young pup. Keep sessions short and always finish on a good note. When introducing your puppy to other dogs it is important to be selective, please do remember that dogs do not have any concept of size until it hits them. It is important that your puppy experiences as many different types of dogs as possible but under the owners control in order to prevent dangerous situations from occurring. Dogs that spend time with other dogs usually make good socialisation candidates, but do remember we are bringing packs together, something that does not happen daily in a natural setting.
If you are unsure on socialising your puppy with other dogs then book on to a professional socialisation session. Ask your breeder or the previous owners what exactly your puppy has been exposed to previously. Then get to work, you do not have to wait until the pup has had its second vaccination. You may carry your puppy to the school gates, friends house’s (without other dogs until vaccinated), on short journeys etc. A puppy must enjoy human contact, be comfortable with a wide range of people and within a variety of environments. The puppy must also learn that he/she is not the unit but rather part of it.The owner must lead the way, control situations and show the puppy the world. PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS
Using Flash
A
Using flash especially with compact cameras is a bad, bad thing and should be outlawed by the EU…
ll joking aside, the problem with flash is that light coming from a few centimeters from the lens, leads to the everdreaded red eye which is light bouncing back from the eyeball. The photo can also look flat and lifeless, with all those unflattering features being revealed to the world due to lack of shadows. If you’ve got fair skin you’re in real trouble, as direct flash, especially if the camera is close to you, can make
you look even fairer, sometimes white as the shot can become overexposed. Granted compact cameras are perfect if you’re out with your friends and fancy taking some cheeky photos of the evening, but it doesn’t all have to be flat, lifeless, overexposed nastiness. One tip is to stand further back and zoom in, increasing the distance between the flash
G e of f
S h eed
and subject. This can reduce the harshness of the direct flash and give the light a chance to bounce off walls and ceilings, which can bring some shadows back into play. This can also reduce red eye as the light isn’t so direct. The example shown was taken in a bedroom using flash, granted it wasn’t taken with a compact camera, but the flash used was bounced off the wall to the left. This is a good example of how flash can be a lovely thing when given the chance to bounce or given distance to diffuse. You can also try to put some opaque tape over the flash making the light softer and more diffuse that way. David Horder Telephone: 07786 616022 www.lensflairdigital.co.uk
