CHARITY FUNDRAISERS INJECT SOME COLOUR INTO GO RED WEEK! The Herts Air Ambulance fundraising team get colourful during a red powder paint fight to launch Go Red 2014! Starting off in pure white, fundraisers Dawn and Cristina were soon coated head to toe in red. The battle took place at North Weald Airfield, the home of the Herts Air Ambulance as the Crew cheered them on from a safe distance. The fun stunt is to raise awareness for National Air Ambulance Week in September and encourage registrations for the Charity’s Go Red campaign. The week takes place from Monday 22nd to Sunday 28th September and will raise both awareness and funds for the County’s ‘RED’ life-saving helicopter. The Charity is inviting schools, businesses, groups and individuals to take part by doing anything to Go Red during the week. You don’t have to get as messy as our fundraisers: wear a red item of clothing or have a non-uniform day, sell red cakes or put on a red themed quiz or party to raise funds for Herts Air Ambulance. Anything red goes! Could you challenge your work colleagues or teachers to a chilli eating competition?! Cristina Barone, Herts Air Ambulance Fundraising Coordinator said: “It was so much fun doing our Go Red paint fight, even though it took me three baths to get all the paint out of my hair!! We really want people to have fun with this, so every red-themed idea is welcome. If you have any crazy ideas of what you would like to do, get in touch and we can advise you on how we might be able to help. Registering today will help us to keep our life-saving helicopter flying, by raising vital funds and awareness.” The Herts Air Ambulance receives no direct Government or National Lottery funding, and relies on the generosity of the people who live and work in Hertfordshire to continue to save lives. Stephen McPartland MP delighted to open this year’s Codicote Village Day Stephen McPartland, Member of Parliament for Stevenage, was invited to officially open this year’s Codicote Village Day and judge the floats and a variety of other events. Stephen said, “I was delighted to open Codicote Village Day and really enjoyed the day which started with watching the floats going past in the High Street. It was fun to join the parade and then make the awards to the winning floats in the main area where there were lots of different competitions and displays. With many different community stalls and funfair rides there was something for all the family. “My favourite part of the day was the floats which so many people took part in. Everyone had amazing costumes and a lot of work had gone into decorating the floats with so many excited children. It was a fantastic day and my thanks go to the volunteers who organised it and all those who took part to make it such fun.” 4

How to deal With
Debt
It is a sad reality that most of us are in debt these days. With the high cost of housing, it’s perhaps unsurprising that people are having to borrow more money than they really should. For many, this debt is perfectly manageable. However, it only takes a problem like losing your job, or ill health to suddenly turn manageable debt into an utter nightmare.
I
f you are having financial difficulty and realise that you are unable to meet your debt responsibilities, the most important thing to do is to face up to the reality. As tempting as it may be to bury your head in the sand and ignore the demand letters, it is simply going to make the problem much much worse. When you have accepted the situation, you need to sit down and look openly and honestly at the money you have coming in, and the money going out. Even if the prospect is thoroughly depressing, you need to understand exactly what the numbers are before you go any further. At this point, I would advise contacting the companies you owe money to and explaining the situation. They may be able to give you a ‘payment holiday’ until you get yourself back on your feet again. They are also much more likely to be helpful if you’ve been open and honest with them rather than ignoring them and hoping they will simply go away. Remember, they want their money, so it’s in their interest to work with you as opposed to against you. When you’ve worked out how much money you can put towards your debts, you then need to prioritise them. The most important debts are: mortgage or rent arrears, gas and electricity arrears, council tax arrears, court fines, income tax
or VAT arrears and TV licence arrears. If you fail to pay these, you could lose your home, and in the most extreme circumstances, could end up in prison. The less urgent debts include: benefits overpayments, credit cards and loans, water and sewerage bills (you can’t be cut off for water debts), student loans, loans from family and friends and parking penalties from local authorities. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t bother trying to pay them, but these should be at the bottom of the list. Hopefully, with careful budgeting, balancing and communication, you’ll be able to manage your debts until you get back on your feet. However, if you simply cannot pay what you owe, then there are some options for you. However, be aware they do not come without costs. Solutions such as debt consolidation, or even bankruptcy can be the only way out for some people but please look at the pros and cons before committing. I would always advise that you contact your local citizens advice bureau or the debt charity ‘Step Change’ on 0800 138 1111 before making any further decisions about the management of your debt.

his will be the 6th GOATFEST Live Music Festival which is run to help raise funds for The Isabel Hospice in Welwyn Garden City. They have now raised just short of £20k and expecting to exceed that number this year no doubt! GOATFEST has been a huge success story, having made a profit for the charity from the first event. This is down to fantastic community support making it one of the biggest and best local music festivals in the area. It is even featured in Hertfordshire Life’s top 50 events and attractions of the year! The event gets bigger every year, this year is no exception with a brand new Acoustic Evening taking place on the Friday night, starting at 5pm which is FREE entry! It will feature some local 14
acoustic talent from the area and headlining the Friday night are the Skeltons featuring Andy Skelton who has played for the one and only Dolly Parton, who of course headlined Glastonbury this year! Over 25 acts will be performing over the weekend, with a whole host of various bands playing through Saturday and Sunday. The Saturday headliner is the amazing ‘Are You Experienced?’ ( The UK’s number one Jimi Hendrix Tribute act). This is followed by Sunday’s headliner Mitchell Joseph Thomson as MICHAEL JACKSON – Number 1 Tribute to the king of pop! In addition to this, there are plenty of other acts playing including a 70 piece choir, a Bhangra band and some local favourites including Rockface, Roadrunner, Indi and the Vegas and Allergy to name a few. Fancy a dessert healthy enough for breakfast? ‘Bressert’ is my favourite meal and I reckon that pretty soon it could be your favourite too! When breakfast and dessert join forces you know you’re onto a good thing!

hen it comes to eating healthily I have an undeniable sweet tooth. In my role as a health coach it’s one of the key areas my clients want to combat and control too. Cravings are the source of many a diet failure and lifelong frustration. BUT why fight the cravings when you can work with them and create easy healthy sweet dishes that cut the refined sugars and use all natural ingredients. This ‘tropical pineapple and coconut oat bake’ uses just the natural sugar
from fruit and is great served hot or cold at any time of day… perfect for summer time snacking. Guilt free indulgence is just a few moments away. There is always the option to add a little extra sweetness if you need it, but once you start focusing on natural sources of sugars you will very quickly find your taste buds adapt and a lower level of sweetness is needed to hit the spot. You can also follow the same recipe principle and use other fruits and flavours. On my recipe blog; Including Cake I feature an apple and blueberry bake as well as a chocolate, banana and hazelnut bake. Let the fruit do the talking and pair it with complimentary flavours. Why not try a cherry vanilla version, or maybe pear and ginger… get creative in the kitchen! I also love simplicity when it comes to cooking, and this is definitely one of those ‘mix it up and throw it in the oven’ recipes... healthy, foolproof and it simply tastes divine. It will keep nicely in the fridge for a couple of days so make a large serving and grab a spoonful whenever the cravings strike.
Tropical pineapple & coconut oat bake
Serves 2 (can easily be doubled)
Ingredients:

½ cup oats 1 tbs ground flaxseed Pinch salt 2/3 cup fresh pineapple chunks (or 1 tin) 2 tsp maple syrup (optional if a little extra sweetness needed) ¼ cup chunky coconut flakes/curls ¾ cup canned coconut milk 1 tsp vanilla or rum extract
Mix all ingredients together in a medium bowl, adding the pineapple and coconut last, sprinkle a few of the coconut flakes over the top surface. Spoon evenly into a medium pie dish- approx 20cm diameter (the mixture should be approx 2cm deep). Bake at 180C for approx 30 mins until the top is golden.

Everyone’s Cup of Tea
Hoping they’re everyone’s cup of tea, this Knebworth based venture has recently launched, offering a wonderful range of vintage china that will enhance any party – from an intimate Valentine’s dinner to a wedding reception and everything in between!
T
he partners are Deb, 32 and her fiance’s mother Pam, a recently retired 67 year old. Deb began collecting vintage china to eventually use at her own wedding but found this a more expensive exercise than she had estimated. Storage also became a difficultly, so Pam got involved. This proved to be a great solution as Pam had time to source the necessary items and also the storage space necessary for their ever-expanding stock. As the range grew and developed, interested neighbours wanted to view. The stock was used for small tea parties, a birthday celebration and a baptism party. A friend’s daughter then asked if there was sufficient to cover a wedding for 100 and Everyone’s Cup of Tea was born!
