Welcome to May
M
y grandmother loved the good old yorkshire proverb about the foolishness of casting a ‘clout’ before May is out and this year, the wild and windy weather has been reluctant to move on. So much so that at times it seemed like my chance to take to the skies with the Southdown gliding Club would never come to pass, but come it did, and with not a little trepidation, I got my first aerial view of Sussex in springtime. Find out if I had a head for heights on page 13. The changing of the seasons means that food and drink is never far from my mind, and although we were worried about angering the weather gods, BeerMatt & I risked sparking up the BBQ to find the best Sussex beers to accompany some locally-sourced Sussex meats (p27). My local spies tell me that the property market in West Sussex is starting to pick up. Some of our regular columnists and a few local faces have been recruited to give us the low-down on the market, share their thoughts on the latest trends in interiors and pass on a few top tips about preparing your home for sale (pages 16 – 19). Finally, we’ve been out on the general Election campaign trail catching up with our local prospective parliamentary candidates to see how they feel about life in West Sussex and what they would do if they win your vote. Don’t forget to use yours.

Craft & Farmers’ Market Launched in Ashington
A
new craft and farmers’ market has been launched in Ashington by a group of entrepreneurial mums. Brought together by a shared love of handicrafts, the group soon realised that they themselves made enough items to hold their own local market selling high quality arts, crafts and produce. The first market in March attracted over 200 visitors who bought hand-made cards, unique painting, jewellery and handmade homewares. Children made Mothers Day cards while their mums browsed the stalls and all visitors enjoyed the opportunity to relax with a drink and a cake. organiser Shirley Leather said, “We’re delighted with the response so far and we’ve got dates booked throughout the summer now in both. The next markets take place in Ashington on Friday, 7th May and at the Norfolk Centre, Arundel on Sunday 9th May. For further information, contact Shirley Leather on 01903 891754.

ne of the oldest buildings in Steyning’s traditional shopping arcade, Cobblestone Walk, has re-opened as a traditional tea rooms called The old Bakery, in homage to the building’s original function. The half-timbered listed building, which lies at the heart of the charming arcade, still operated as a bakery as recently as 1963. New owner, Paul Ainscough, wants the tea rooms to be a hub for the local community. “We’re serving real tea, real coffee and amazing homemade cakes,” says Paul, “And we want people to feel free to drop in throughout the day. We offer locally produced products, many of which are for sale in our shop. It’s a special building and we’re very excited to be open.” Find out more about The Old Bakery and Cobblestone Walk at www.cobblestonewalk.co.uk. May is Chelsea time...
T
he Chelsea Flower show will run from May 25th to May 29th and it’s the highlight of my gardening year, along with the publication of the NgS yellow book. If you’ve never visited Chelsea and enjoy watching it on the television, then do consider going. The rhS added Saturday as an extra day, but they don’t sell any more tickets, in order to make the show less crowded and more comfortable for visitors. It’s a great day out, and the garden designs are really worth seeing. The innovation and planning that goes into such a small space, for just one week, is so exciting to witness. Plants are grown months, or even years, in advance. huge trees are brought in from Italy and holland to make gardens look mature and established. Walls are built, buildings are even constructed, and the weather will play a key part too. Wet and windy weather in the critical build up weeks will cause no end of problems for the poor landscape contractors trying to lay blocks, bricks, lawns and plant borders. There will be exhibitors covering every aspect of the garden, from gorgeous furniture and pots to greenhouses and conservatories with each stand competing for a medal too. The huge floral marquee has blooms of every type and size to see. once, when we were finishing off a show garden late at night, I wandered around the marquee at midnight watching the exhibitors put the final touches to the displays. All sound was muted beneath the huge sheets of canvas. The scent of the flowers was overwhelming. The Caribbean display team were all humming softly to themselves. The company setting up their daffodils were using tiny paint brushes to clean the petals. It felt spiritual in there. Chelsea. It’s wonderful!
Village Living 8 32pp AW.indd 9
E
aster weekend was the start of something wonderful in the garden. The weather was great, spring was in the air and there was the opportunity to get so much done. I dragged ‘him indoors’ into the vegetable patch and we dug over the beds and planted all number of things, like Tom and Barbara from the good Life. Suddenly there seemed so much to do. Finally all the dead things from the winter could be cut back; the new growth has started to envelop the old. I pruned all the roses and tied them into the pergolas. We cut the grass for the first time this year and I planted small pots of herbaceous things into the gaps caused by the losses in the snow. If you have the money and opportunity to do just one thing in the garden this year, then think about planting a bed around your patio or terrace. So many patios look as though they just landed from Mars and are stuck in isolation up against the house and in the lawn. Dig a big wide bed all around the terrace and plant it with lavender, rosemary and alliums, interplant with verbena bonariensis or add a box hedge to finish the edge. If you’d like ideas for your garden, then please call or ask for our brochure.

11 • ELECTIoN BACK IN TIME
Every Vote Counts
Not sure who to vote for in the General Election or who has the interests of you and your community at heart? We caught up with the Prospective Parliamentary candidates for the Arundel & South Downs seat. Here’s what they had to say...
Questions 1. What will you to do to support independent local shops, businesses and traders; and to help our villages and towns become more vibrant and economically robust? 2. How will you protect our rural areas & communities whilst coping with an increasing population and the need for more affordable housing and infrastructure? 3. How will you communicate with local residents and be accountable & transparent whilst working for the constituency? 4. What will be your greatest priority?
Village Living 8 32pp AW.indd 11
1. Cut red tape, and replace business rates with site values so small businesses are not penalised when improving their premises. Maintain free car parking and improve bus and cycle links between rural and urban areas and South Downs National Park 2. Abolish regional planning agencies and restore planning controls over housing, location and infrastructure improvements to local councils that know the local needs. The conversion of homes or new housing for second homes for holidaymakers would require planning permission. 3. Maintain my website, and extend my existing quarterly newsletter to all DEREK DEEDMAN residents throughout the Constituency. Have a constituency office open at least 5 days a week, hold regular surgeries in each town and publish details of expenses on my website. 4. To help local businesses survive and local people in work during the current economic downturn, whilst working to maintain essential public services with fair taxes, green future for jobs, education chance for every child and cleaning up politics. 1. One way that our excellent local businesses can grow is to increase the market that they are available to. Better broadband internet connection widespread across rural areas will allow the local economy to thrive online as well as in traditional means. 2. I’m a young person who is in need of more local affordable housing if I am to get on the property ladder, but of course no one wants new housing built in a disruptive manner. Hopefully the new South Downs National Park should help protect some areas of the constituency. 3. Firstly hopefully the new faster broadband will hopefully allow everyone TIM LUNNON to email or use social media to get in contact with me. But also rather than getting stuck in party politics in London, I want to be out meeting constituents face to face like I have these past few weekends. 4. My greatest priority is restoring the trust in politics. I’ve never been involved before, but politics has such an important role in day to day life that those who make the decisions have to be believed. I pledge to be fully transparent about expenses and lobbying. 1. We must support our village and small town high streets. A Conservative government will reduce the burden of tax and regulation on small businesses, stop Labour’s tax on jobs and scrap their plan to make out-oftown shopping developments easier. 2. I am passionate about protecting the West Sussex countryside. We will scrap the housing targets which demand more than 74,000 houses in rural West Sussex and give local communities the power and incentives to provide homes, including affordable housing, according to local need. 3. I have always tried to be open and accessible to local people. I hold NICK HERBERT surgeries and village open meetings, produce constituency reports, have a website which (uniquely) includes my weekly diary, and publish all my expenses online. 4. I will continue to work hard for everyone in the constituency, to stand up for local communities regardless of party, and be a strong voice at Westminster for your concerns.

Gliding High
I
’ve always enjoyed watching perfect puffy clouds scud across a perfect blue sky. Who doesn’t? But today I’m looking at them in a whole new light because those wisps of white fluff are the only thing that are going to get me from A to B. After several postponements due to early April’s wild and windy weather, I’ve finally arrived at Southdown gliding Club for my trial lesson. Jackie, the friendly club secretary, welcomes me to the clubhouse and excitedly points out that the cloud formations couldn’t be any more auspicious. Perfectly formed fluffy white clouds, called Cumulus, indicate thermal currents of air rising from the ground to form clouds. hang on – don’t pilots try to avoid clouds? Not dashing glider pilots, apparently, who hop from cloud
to cloud, climbing the thermals and swooping elegantly across the sky without any engine power at all. Note to self: the only clouds to avoid are Cumulo Nimbus, also known as thunder clouds. Southdown gliding Club is one of the largest in the country, situated at Parham Airfield just outside Storrington. The club owns six club planes but is also home to nearly fifty privately owned gliders whose owners also belong to the club. The planes themselves are elegant. With no bulky engines or fuel tanks to accommodate, glider planes are built with aerodynamic efficiency in mind. It strikes me that once in the air, they must certainly be safer than their engine-powered counterparts, because they are entirely in control of how fast they descend whatever the conditions. Indeed, one of the pilots tells me that the heroic airline pilot who made the successful emergency water landing in New york’s hudson river was actually an experienced glider pilot. I’m relieved that the weather couldn’t be better, because I’m something of a nervous flyer and donning the parachute that the senior instructor, Duncan Stewart, has handed me, is a bit of a reality check. And, as I’m sitting in the front of the cockpit, I will also be responsible for ejecting the canopy in the event of an emergency. Best pay attention then. Luckily Duncan has 16 years as a glider pilot under his belt. Because we are using a private airfield and operating under general
With the right cloud formations, gliders can stay aloft indefinitely, and indeed some of the members that day were heading off on round trips as far afield as Cheltenham and Dunstable, planning to skip from cloud to cloud without having to land at all aviation flight paths, there is no need to file a flight plan or radio a control tower. We’re hooked up to the motorised ‘tug’ plane and we’re off. At 3,000 feet, we unhook from the cable and we head off to find our first thermal to gain some height. I’m still busy admiring the view, when Duncan asks me to take control of the plane. of course there are two sets of controls, but he remains admirably calm as I bob around over Parham house.

I begin the descent to the airfield. As this involves lots of banking and then straightening up, which we’ve discovered is really not my strong point, Duncan takes charge again and we glide in to make an elegant landing, rolling to a stop exactly where we started. There was, of course, no need to come down. With the right cloud formations, gliders can stay aloft indefinitely, and indeed some of the members that day were heading off on round trips as far afield as Cheltenham and Dunstable, planning to skip from cloud to cloud without having to land at all. The whole experience is quite overwhelming, and it’s not until a few days later, that I realise that I can’t stop thinking about it – it was a magical experience. Instructor Duncan summed it up best. “Powered pilots want to be astronauts,” he told me, “but glider pilots just want to be birds.” Maybe I could learn to fly in a straight line after all.
We practise turning (easy), climbing (nearly got sucked up into a Cumulo Nimbus) and diving (alarming), which I more or less master, but the one thing I can’t get the hang of is just flying in a straight line. Duncan is constantly muttering ‘rudder’ and ‘ailerons’ from behind me, and I kind of know what he means, but I suspect I’m not a natural flyer. Quite frankly, I’m too busy admiring the view. Nevertheless, I manage to wobble my way over to Steyning, do a fly-by over my house (I can even see my family in the garden – they don’t look up) and fly back again with pit stops under various clouds for a bit more juice.
Southdown Gliding Club offers trial lessons & gift vouchers for £90, one day courses for £207, and welcomes new members. Find out more at www.sgc1.org or call 01903 742137.

The Art of Selling a House
W
hat’s the worst thing that can happen to an estate agent? “Easy”, HJ Burt’s Matthew Cattell had told me earlier. “Getting locked in, getting locked out or breaking something.” Hmmm. He didn’t say anything about pets though, and I am trying to look confident in front of my first set of prospective buyers but the dog of the house looks decidedly sceptical. I talk, he barks. I move, he follows me. He obviously doesn’t want to move from the lovely house I’m trying to show, so Matthew smoothly steps in carries on with the tour like a true professional whilst I handle the dog. It seems there is a lot more to selling a house than I’d anticipated. With a few hours’ training under my belt, I’d been feeling pretty confident, but it’s obvious that there is no substitute for experience. Matthew has been working at HJ Burt for nearly a year and previously in Storrington for a further twelve years. Why do we need estate agents? He explains, “It’s one of the biggest purchases you make in your life, so it’s my job to negotiate the best deal for you. We can often reach an agreement between a buyer and seller because we are neutral and want the best for all concerned.” I’ve come to HJ Burt to find out what’s going on in the local property market and try my hand at being an estate agent. Despite the market allegedly being ‘quiet’, the office is a hive of activity. Between three departments – Country Properties, Town & Village & Lettings – there are plenty of properties on the market and partners David Marshall and Rowan Allan are predicting a period of modest but steady growth in the coming months. The company has a long and illustrious history, dating back to the 1880s when the original Harry James Burt established the business as a farm and cattle auctioneer. I can’t help wondering what impact the internet has had on the business. Have the likes of Right Move and Find a Property helped or hindered high street estate agents? “Definitely helped” says Rowan. “Clients’ properties get exposed to the widest possible marketplace through internet May 2010 • Village Living

advertising which has produced a much more level playing field in terms of our competition with ‘the big boys’ - national London based agents – whilst putting an even greater importance on local knowledge.” Is there any danger of the internet cutting estate agents out of the loop entirely? “People do sell houses privately from time to time,” says Rowan, “but when you are generally dealing with your most valuable asset, it is essential that you expose it fully to all potential buyers, and be aware that house-selling can potentially be fraught and troublesome; you need a professional to steer you through the process.” Rightly, HJ Burt are known for handling big country house sales, but more and more of their business is in the Town & Village sector, as well as a busy lettings department. I ask Matthew’s colleagues Christina Smith and Lettings’ Nicki Maynard what makes being an estate agent so great. With nearly twenty years’ experience between them, they both agree that’s it’s a fascinating job. “People and properties are very interesting and, as a team, we get on brilliantly and we have a lot of fun.” I’ve got to admit that I’d never really put being an estate agent at the top of my list of ‘fun jobs to do’ but actually Christina is right. Matthew and I haven’t stopped laughing all afternoon and for a professional nosey parker like me, being an estate agent is probably the perfect second career. Sell Your Home, Love Your Home
Making over your home can be tricky. Should you keep it neutral with an eye on its future re-sale value, or give free reign to your creative side even though others may not like it?
Apparently, you can do both. Two local experts tell us how you can add value to your home without being boring.
Bay Tree Trading, Henfield Trained as a florist, owner Jen Allmond, certainly has an eye for composition. Bay Tree Trading is home to beautifully arranged collections of classic country-style homewares. What’s the first rule when it comes to decorating your home? “I only buy what I like and I always think about what it will go with that I already have.” Still, I imagine that not everyone is blessed with the same impeccable taste as Jen. Luckily, she has a few tips to share.
Jen’s top home-styling tips Make a grand statement. Use big mirrors to reflect light & create a feeling of space. Brighton up dark corners with lights. Small lamps or twig lights, for example, are perfect. Flowers soften any space. Use artificial flowers in hard to reach places and fresh flowes where a scent will be noticed.

Henfield Antiques & Home A fixture on henfield high Street for the past 12 years, henfield Antiques and home is one of my favourite places to browse. Specialising in antiques and quality second-hand furniture and accessories, owner Deborah Evans brings back stock from auctions and markets all over the country. “Second-hand pieces are a great way to give your home a makeover because they work well in most spaces and if you need to sell them, unlike new furniture, they tend to keep their re-sale value. Also, second-hand china & glassware is an affordable way of creating an instant collection.”

Bass SAMnews
Unique in its ability to combine both rhythm and harmony to become the foundation of musical ensembles, the bass is an integral part of a band, and is able provide funk solos of its own. Spanning from the melodic sounds of Paul McCartney (The Beatles) to the pulsing grooves of Ashton ‘Family Man’ Barrett (Bob Marley and The Wailers), and evolving to the electric beats of dubstep, the bass is at the heart of all modern music. SAM offers diverse and dynamic tuition for this understated instrument, teaching you the skills you need to become a brilliant bass player. SAM’s Bass tutor Chris Britt has a degree in Professional Musicianship, and delivers to a consistently high standard within his gigging and session work alongside teaching SAM pupils. he teaches within schools and at the Academy. he has worked with artists such as the American singer songwriter Shana Morrison (daughter of Van Morrison), expanding his talents to work with UK grime/r’n’b artists Davinche and Bashy. his work has been eclectic and enriched by working in many different areas of the industry, performing on cruise ships, in holiday parks and touring with numerous originals and functions bands. Chris has been featured on tuition websites and has recorded sessions for the BBC and Ministry of Sound. his performances include shows with the Brighton Theatre group, and he has been acclaimed by members of the music industry: ‘he is a real talent with fantastic learning skills, musicality and groove. Chris is a great asset to any band and a great person to work with.’ (Ace – Skunk Anansie) Chris’s teaching encompasses a wide range of styles, from funk and jazz, to rock and dubstep.

Crown and Anchor Shoreham
Anne Ellson
I
t was a warm spring evening as we strolled down Shoreham high Street, perfect for our food experience at the Crown and Anchor gastro-pub, overlooking the river Adur. I had been impressed by the website, particularly the ‘Tweets’ of the Chef, Andy, indicating a well-run and happy kitchen. We were shown to our table by the atrium window overlooking the river terrace, in the light and airy restaurant. The restaurant area was fairly full, but we remarked on the lack of noise, just a pleasant background buzz. We were greeted at our table by Cora, the charming and efficient restaurant Manager, who in the absence of proprietors giles and Sandra, told us all the cocktail lounge bar, which is open on Fridays and Saturdays. We studied our menus while enjoying a pre-dinner drink. I often judge a place by its ability to produce a wellspiced tomato juice, and this one was excellent, with exactly the right amount of Tabasco. I chose from the set fish menu, which, with an imaginative choice of 5 starters and 5 mains, appeared excellent value at £9.95 for two courses. My husband chose from the extensive a la carte menu. This menu caters for all needs throughout the day, with classics, light bites, sandwiches, breakfasts, teas, plus a children’s menu. We were disappointed that two of the dishes we wanted were off, but that did give an indication that the food was freshly prepared. May 2010 • Village Living

I started with spaghetti vongole, with the clams served in their shells, with peppers. This was well presented, as was our entire meal, and just the right amount for a starter – light and tasty. My husband chose mushrooms mornay, accompanied by a well dressed salad and fresh crusty bread, all of which he pronounced very good. For a main, I followed with grilled hake Lyonnaise, with the fish topped by the traditional Lyonnaise mix of onions and potatoes, served in a delicious fish stock, which really made this dish. My husband said his beef Bourguignonne was well cooked; very tender chunks of beef in an excellent wine sauce, accompanied by tasty and smooth mashed potato. I had chosen cheese instead of a dessert, having spied a notice on the wall stating that this could be provided at room temperature if ordered at the start of the meal, a feature that I have not come across before. I was not disappointed – the board that came was a very generous helping of mature Cheddar, Austrian smoked and Camembert, accompanied by celery, home made chutney and grapes, with a good variety of biscuits – all excellent. Service throughout the evening, provided by Kora and one other waitress was excellent; the right blend
of being attentive and quick enough, but allowing enough time between courses. our overall impression was of a professionally run and friendly operation. The food and wine, and particularly the fish menu, is excellent value for money – the total cost for the two of us was around £56, excluding service. It is the type of venue that one could pop into for a quick meal, but linger longer at leisure. With the additions of the various theme nights in the bar, the live jazz and the cocktail lounge at weekends it caters for a variety of tastes at a reasonable cost. We will be making a return visit, and will recommend it to friends. Ann Ellson is a self-employed HR consultant, living just outside Henfield. Both Ann & her husband John, are keen gourmets, with interests in both food and wine. Her favourite restaurant locally is Amberley Castle.

Put sugar & lemon juice in a pan and put on a medium heat to make a syrup. At the same time, boil the cream with the lemon zest. once boiled, take straight off heat. Whisk the eggs & yolks thoroughly. Slowly, add the syrup and boiled cream to the whisked eggs. Pass the brulee mixture through a sieve to remove the zest. Place 3-4 raspberries in the bottom of each ramekin and pour mixture over. Cook in a bain marie at 120-150 degrees C for 25-30 mins or until the mixture has set. To glaze the top, it’s best to use a kitchen blow torch but you can also caramelise sugar in a pan and pour it carefully over the top.

have been phoning our asparagus grower on a daily basis. I hope he will forgive my pestering. It is my very favourite vegetable and the English ‘grass’ season is so short that I want to make sure we have the very first. Traditionally the season runs from St. georges Day (23rd April) to the Longest Day (21st June), although this year the unusually cold winter seems to have set it back a bit. Like so many things nowadays, you can buy foreign asparagus all the year round but nothing beats English. our cool climate allows it to develop slowly producing a full, sweet flavour and buying it locally means that it is fresher, which is vital as it loses its sweetness by the hour. eerMatt and I were so intrigued by the success of our recent cheese and beer-matching experiment at high Weald Dairy, that we couldn’t resist sparking up the barbie and trying our hand at matching some of Sussex’s finest ales with some locally produced meat. Perhaps we were tempting the weather gods, but we recruited Mick Kemp, owner of Steyning high street shop, roberts Butchers, to bring us luck and we were rewarded with enough watery April sunshine to get the job done. Mick came armed with a juicy fillet steak, a tender loin of pork and an intriguing traditional South African coiled sausage, the Boerewors, made from gently spiced beef and pork. As well as stocking a good range of exotic meats, Mick is passionate about sourcing local Sussex meat – the majority comes from Mick’s cousin, a local henfield farmer. his assistant James, is a skilled ferreter, who keeps the shop supplied with a stock of rabbits. We were hoping the loin of pork would be a good match for a tangy local cider. Appledram Farm’s medium
dry cider hit the spot nicely, bringing out the smokiness of the barbequed meat without overpowering it. In the interests of thoroughness, we sampled the cider with morsels of fillet steak and the spicy Boerewors, but the cider was just too sweet for the more robust meats on offer. onto the Boerewors, a gently spiced beef and pork sausage and a South African institution which we suspected would get on rather well with a glass of hepworth Blonde lager. Light & dry, the lager was perfect with the aromatic Boerewors and fared quite well with the pork chop too, but there was universal agreement that lager & fillet steak was utterly wrong. Up against strong beefy flavours, the lager became sweet and flat-tasting. Subconsciously, we’d perhaps saved the best until last – a beautiful piece of exceedingly rare fillet steak. out came a bottle of Adur Brewery’s Black William
Stout. An unexpectedly heavenly match, the rich flavours of the treacly stout and the well-hung beef elicited the unanimous verdict: “It’s just like a beef and guinness pie!” Sussex beer, local meat and a bit of blue sky has got me excited enough to predict that elusive BBQ summer. Sussex beers & ciders are available from www.beermatt.co.uk. With thanks to Roberts Butchers, High Street, Steyning. Tel 01903 816 444.

Selling your house? Don’t forget to sell your garden too...

hen people put their house on the market, it usually involves a good tidy-up and a certain amount of ‘de-cluttering’, but very few people apply the same principles to their garden. Most people have heard about ‘kerb appeal’, or making sure that your house gives a good first impression, but usually this amounts to no more than making sure the wheelie bin is out of sight. A good clear out of any ‘dead wood’ is a good place to start. If you have any shrubs or plants which are past their best and unlikely to make a recovery, then now is a good time to get rid of them. A prospective buyer would rather see an empty space or blank canvas than an overgrown thicket of unhealthy foliage and weeds – to them that will just look like more work and expense. Inevitably you will have a few gaps to fill and here is your dilemma. Should you invest in some larger plants to give your garden some structure or just stick few cheap and cheerful plants in your
A prospective buyer would rather see an empty space or blank canvas than an overgrown thicket of borders to add a splash of colour? The good news is you can do both. If you are about to move house, you can probably afford to splash a bit of cash on a few colourful shrubs to make things look pretty. At this time of year, Photinia or “red robin” with its lovely red tips, would work well. When it comes to plugging some larger gaps, fortunately there are some trees and shrubs that do well in big pots for extended periods of time, which means you can take them with you and plant them in your new garden. At the nursery, we have some olive trees which are over 100 years old and

his month the Bank of England voted for the thirteenth consecutive month to keep their base rate at 0.5%. This is the longest period without a decrease or increase since the rate was frozen at 4% between November 2001 and February 2003. Many economists are now predicting that rates will remain very low for a long period of time. We also now know that the general Election will take place on May 6th. The result of the election could have quite an impact on the economy, another reason rates will be expected to stay low. Not only do we need to stabilise our economy, but also deal with any impact the election may bring. According to the halifax house Price index UK prices increased by 1.1% in March, partly offsetting February’s 1.6% fall. This was the eighth rise in the past nine months, taking the average price to £168,521, 9.1% above the low point reached last April. Prices in the
Are lenders lending? We all know that it is much more difficult now to get a mortgage. Self employed people or those with adverse credit have been hit especially hard. Some people are finding themselves stuck and unable to move. They could get a mortgage previously, but not again. If you move a lender will always want to reassess your income, and if things are more stringent, you may find yourself out of their lending criteria. Some people think that if they have a portable mortgage, their lender will not reassess. This is unfortunately not the case. Lenders are lending, but they are being very choosy. The best rates are still reserved for those with large deposits, so these are the people they are trying to attract. There is some flexibility in lending policy, but it is really important to deal with the right lender for your situation. Not only has the credit crunch affected lending policy, it has also affected the service and turnaround times of many lenders. If they have a good deal or different lending criteria
they can find themselves inundated and unable to cope. This means you may have a long wait for your mortgage offer. So, if you want the best rate then you may need a high dose of patience! If you deal with an independent adviser at least we will be doing the chasing for you. If you are a busy person, or you don’t understand the process this can save you a lot of time, money and stress in the long run. So, if you need a mortgage, my message is this; Find an independent adviser who knows the market and can deal with your mortgage for you. Not only will you get the best deal, but we will chase the mortgage through to offer and completion and deal with any hurdles that may come up from the lender. If you need independent advice on mortgages or any other financial matter, please call me Claire Cook on 01273 224667. I would be very happy to assist. The best day of your life?
F
or a married couple, the wedding day should be one of the best days of their life, but so often it is ruined by stress. This usually starts with negotiations with family about the arrangements: location, cost, guests etc. etc. Family feuds can be resurrected and make life unpleasant for all around. Even when these are ironed out, dealing with the caterers, photographers, venue and hotel management can create tensions, when plans do not work out as expected. For many, the prospect of giving a speech, or just being the focus of attention on the day, can be a burden and detract from the event itself. Finally, there is a relatively high percentage of the population who have a phobia about flying, or other means of transport. So even the prospect of a honeymoon in sunnier climes, in itself, can be daunting. overriding the whole situation can be each individual’s uncertainty about whether they are doing the right thing, as marriage is a big commitment to make. Unfortunately, the end result is often for there to be friction between the couple getting married. The event can take on an identity of its own
xact age.

and become a monster; detracting from the most important thing, the relationship itself. These tensions tend to build up to a peak on the wedding day; providing an opportunity for one or other of the couple to have an emotional meltdown and potentially spoil the day. hypnotherapy can provide an effective treatment for all of the above. It cannot ensure that all the events will go well, but it can provide the tools to help you deal with all aspects of stress leading up to the day and on the day itself. By identifying the potential sources of conflict in advance and treating them, problems can be minimized. relationship problems, phobias (public speaking, flying), confidence and self esteem issues are all issues that are readily treatable with effective hypnotherapy Where so much money is being spent on ensuring that everyone has an enjoyable day, a relatively small investment in ensuring that the bride and groom are able to look back with joy, is surely an investment worth making.
