Welcome to September!

H

ello and welcome to our September issue of Village Living – my third year as Editor, my how time has flown! This

month we have a fabulous piece from Ginette who visited Daylands Farm recently and reports back on their pick it days, and an update on the Steyning Food and Drink Festival. I was lucky enough to meet Marianne from By Hook Crochet and have

a one-to-one crochet class with her, and a fantastic beauty treatment with Charlotte Metcalfe. Also, see the news page to read about our very own Lisa Sampson of Boogie Hoops, hooping it up in the big top and go to our back page for discounts at Baloos, celebrating their seventh year! Wishing you all a lovely month and all the very best to those of you starting school this term (like my youngest!)

CIRCUS WONDERLAND! Our very own local hula hooping queen Lisa Sampson of Boogie Hoops has recently shared her fantastic skills with the delighted audiences of Shoreham. Lisa who taught herself to hoop, only a couple of years ago, wow-ed the audience with her amazing skills! She was asked to appear as a special guest in this year’s show after visiting the circus last year. She got chatting with Popolino Clown, (Paul Carpenter) who invited her along to perform. Circus Wonderland was thrilled to be back in Sussex with their most exciting show to date a spellbinding mix of colour, laughter and excitement to enchant audiences of all ages! Starring the award winning Popolino Clowns and a line-up of top international artistes, Circus Wonderland is a world of thrills and spills and glitter and glamour, a show that takes inspiration from the traditional picture book circus of our childhood memories to create a vibrant, fast moving show for today. It really was a great fun show to watch with something for all the family, particularly special for us as Lisa was performing! Circus Wonderland will be back in Shoreham next year and is now on its way to Horsham Park from the 17th August go to www.circuswonderland. co.uk – for details and www.boogiehoops.com for details on Lisa’s classes / workshops / party opportunities.

THE LINK VISITING SCHEME Launching and going live on 11th September... A befriending service for the elderly combating social isolation in Upper Beeding, Bramber and Steyning is being launched into our area. With a start up grant from Sussex Police Upper Beeding Baptist Church will be hosting this faith based scheme, catering for one and all, you definitely don’t need to be a church goer to benefit from this service. Aimed mainly at those over sixty who for whatever reason are finding they need some extra friendship and support. Working on a referral basis, with full permission from the person you wish to put forward. Upper Beeding Baptist Church will be hosting but this is a completely non faith based scheme, catering for one and all, aimed mainly at those over sixty who for whatever reason are finding they needing some extra friendship and support. Matching the volunteers with like minded elderly people who would be happy to see a friendly face on a regular basis, perhaps once a week for an hour or so, each situation is

individually assessed and volunteers are paired so as to be as compatible based on interests and personality. Your volunteer would then visit as suits you, never unannounced! The service can provide you with someone to pop round for a chat or company to take you out for a coffee! There are many opportunities fo join in with activities to get out and about and mix with others including the regular friendship lunches, high teas, the bi monthly social event and coffee at the fabulous community based and thriving meeting point that is the Hub Café in Beeding! Volunteers are always needed, with full training given by a qualified trainer, if you have some time to share and would like to be involved, or would like to know more about the scheme for yourself, a neighbour or loved one – call Debbie Wood Scheme Manager on 07769 664375 debbie@thehubbeeding.org.

Pick it, Cook it

by Ginette Stevens

Daylands Farm, Ashurst

F

oraging and growing your own are becoming more en vogue year on year and, as one who likes to keep up with the latest cookery trends, when I heard of Pick It Cook It at Daylands Farm who do both these things, I just had to be the first in my group of pals to visit! Lou and Carol are the masterminds behind Pick It Cook It. Lou’s parents Derek and Vicki run Daylands Farm as tenant farmers and, as children, Lou and Carol spent many happy hours watching Lou’s Mum Vicki make various jams, chutneys and meals from the produce grown on the farm – both cultivated and wild. In 2010 the girls dipped a toe into the foraging market to see if there was a viable business running workshops picking and cooking. At first they had friends and family to test their ideas. Soon others were hearing about their workshops and things rapidly took off. It was obvious that this was turning into a long term business and so Lou’s parents allowed them to convert an old outbuilding into their HQ. Set by an orchard and tucked away from the main farm buildings, the girls spent most of 2011 getting ready to open in earnest.

Now, three years on, Lou and Carol have a successful business which is continuing to grow year on year. Settling down over some homemade cordial and freshly baked cheese and wild garlic scones (delicious!), Lou explained that growing up on a farm and having parents who knew what was edible around them helped make foraging become second nature and this where her expertise lies. Carol’s is on the cooking side, producing delicious jams and chutneys, together with bread, biscuits and scones. So each part of the company title belongs to each one of them! One of the main aims of the girls is to show people the wide variety of produce in the countryside that we can pick for free. It’s important to know what is available each season and how this can be turned into a delicious preserve whether that be a pesto, jam, chutney or cheese. There are recipes galore that they follow or have created that they will share with you such as rosehip syrup as these are just coming into season: Rosehip Syrup – to make about 1.5 litres 500g rosehips 650g granulated sugar Pick over rosehips, remove stalks and rinse in cold water and chop in food processor (can be done by hand but be careful of the itchy insides!). Boil 800ml water in pan, add rosehips and bring back to boil. Take off heat and leave to stand for 15 minutes then put through a scalded jelly bag and leave to drip for an hour. Set aside strained juice, bring another 800ml water to boil and add the rosehip pulp. Pour back through jelly bag and leave to drip overnight. Next day, combine both lots of strained juice (you should have about a litre) and pour into saucepan. Add sugar and heat, stirring until dissolved. Boil for 2-3 minutes and pour into warm, sterilised bottles. Use within 4 months. At a workshop, you not only have the pleasure of picking and cooking your choice of available produce, you also get to see the gorgeous 170 acres of farmland that is Daylands. We took a walk through some ancient woods before stopping to admire a herd of cows and calves. Passing hedgerow that has been there for over a thousand years, Lou pointed out the variety of produce that has come to grow there over this time including rosehip, damson, blackberries, hawthorn, sloes, elderberries and hazel. September and October are the best hedgerow months she explained.

All catering requirements are met during your morning or full day. At a full day’s foraging you are greeted with coffee and cake. Once you have picked and cooked, you have a two course meal and the day ends at 4pm. This makes it a great social event and a lot of people who try a workshop or full day session return again and again, becoming friends as well as customers. Pick It Cook It will offer bespoke workshops to suit the customer type. These include hen parties, family and friends get-togethers, birthday parties and corporate events. As we were chatting, I thought what a great children’s birthday party venue it would make. And they would come away with some useful new skills and a decent party bag! Child friendly days are also being run from 2014. You can find Daylands Farm at various local farmers markets in Steyning, Shoreham and Arundel. They have also been involved with the Horsham and District Food Festival for the last three years and now the Steyning Food Festival as well. Produce includes home-grown vegetables, flowers, fruit, cordials, jams and piccalillis. Courses for Pick it Cook it start for the year in March (wild garlic) and finish at the end of October (Fruit Cheeses). The girls also have many different vegetables in the 6 acre market garden for guests to choose from. These mostly stay the

same but new veggies will always be tested to see how they fare. All the upkeep is done manually by Derek (with a little help). Indeed Lou pointed out a great patch of potatoes and laughingly said that that was her weekend work – digging them up. There is also a fishing lake at Daylands, and camping is permitted (booking essential). On Sunday mornings in December (10am-12pm), you can go and pick your own Christmas tree – I have already reserved mine! I am looking forward to attending an actual Pick It Cook It workshop in the New Year and would thoroughly recommend you do the same. What could be better than free food you have cooked yourself?! Mention Village Living when booking a workshop or full day’s foraging before 31 October 2014 and you will receive a £5 discount (booking can be into 2015). (not in conjunction with any other offer). Gift vouchers are available – see website for full details Pick It Cook It’s website is www.pickitcookit.com or find them on Facebook. You can email them at CarolandLouise@pickitcookit.com Or call: Louise Crush: 07905 405454 or Carol Smith: 07969 123648

Holiday homes for man's best friend!

A new business has launched in Sussex offering dog owners in the BN postcode area a home based alternative to kennels Run by Karey Considine and her dog Shearer, Wagging Tails gives dogs their very own holiday as the only guest in the home of a specially selected dog carer. All Wagging Tails carers are experienced current or former dog owners, are at home during the day, have been licenced by their local council and are full insured. West Sussex resident, Karey, a qualified teacher of the Hearing Impaired and fundraiser for Hearing Dogs has been a dog owner for many years and fully understands the difficulty fellow owners have when leaving their dogs to go on holiday;

“As a dog owner I have spent hundreds of hours in the last 40+ dog owning years trawling the web, phone books and notices in the likes of pet shop windows and vets notice boards, looking for alternatives to impersonal, uncomfortable, cold kennels without ever finding that perfect solution. The kindness of family and friends have been overused and on some occasions holidays or life opportunities have been cancelled or postponed when no satisfactory alternative was available. My aim is to give fellow owners the peace of mind to relax while they are away knowing that their best friend is having a great holiday of his own in the home of one of my carers. Karey is looking for potential carers who would like to welcome dogs into their homes for a holiday. Many Wagging Tails carers describe the role being much like that of a Grandparent - all the fun, then you get to give them back and look forward to the next visit! As well as the companionship of the dogs they are looking after carers receive a small payment for looking after the dogs in their care. To find out more about Wagging Tails please give Karey a ring on 01903 414 074 or 07869 470 570, email bn@waggingtailsuk.co.uk or visit www.waggingtailsuk.co.uk/bn

It will be in full swing from 6th September until 5th October! Mind & Body Chris Jones – Cognitive Hypnotherapist and Sports Performance Mind Coach NLP Master Practioner, MNCH (reg)*

Losing weight with Cognitive Therapy...

T

he common misconception is that weight-loss is simply about dieting; often using established weight-loss organisations, such as Weight-watchers. In my experience, as a practicing Cognitive Hypnotherapist, there is often a great deal more involved; especially when dealing with people who are seriously over-weight. There are invariably psychological issues holding the problem in place; otherwise an individual could use willpower alone and would not experience what is termed ‘yo-yo dieting’; periods of weight-loss followed by periods of binging. The Cognitive Hypnotherapy approach is to identify, from the client, what those issues are and provide a treatment plan that will help that client get to his/her desired outcome situation, which will have been identified in the process. Usually the first and possibly the most important area to deal with is self-esteem. Clients often hold beliefs about themselves, often dating back to childhood, that can include not being worthy, good enough and/or deserving. This can stem from parental or peer abuse. Clients need to feel good about themselves to begin the process of

...the effective alternative losing weight, so a lot of attention is given to this aspect, before food issues are tackled. Most of us carry around a certain amount of psychological baggage, so work is required to help the person change his/her mindset in a way that gets rid of that baggage and focus on positive areas of life, which invariably exist. Food is all around us, on TV in magazines in shops. The Marketeers make every effort to make their products appealing, so it is no wonder that losing weight is difficult. People on diets can become obsessed with food, as it becomes an area of focus 24/7. Clients are helped to deal with this important aspect; to become masters of what they eat, not servants to it. The byproduct of this is an increase in self-esteem. The relationship with food is discussed in detail; particularly elements like comfort-eating, where individuals associate certain foods, such as cake and chocolate with happier times. These items are used to make a person feel better when times are bad... short-term fix. In reality, the long-term effect is to make the individual put on weight and feel even worse about themself. This

becomes a downward spiral, which needs to be addressed. Habits can also form part of the problem and often involve a process, as with the example above. Clients can be guided to become consciously aware of where this applies and change the process involved so that it no longer supports the problem. Cravings can be tackled with hypnotic techniques. This can be formal hypnosis or N.L.P. techniques, giving the client more tools to take away to tackle aspects of the overall problem. Supporting all of the above, clients are given suggestions as to things that can be done to assist the overall process, based on learnings obtained from my wife in her former life as a WeightWatcher Leader. Losing weight does not have to be an arduous task. Cognitive Hypnotherapists have an array of skills and techniques at their disposal to deal with the needs of clients, treating each one as a unique individual, with unique problems and needs.

ne of my favourite ways to relax of an evening is to crochet, I love to make those granny squares and aimlessly hook away reams of wool! Unfortunately up till now I have always been slightly unskilled and just literally gone with the flow and tried to follow (with varying degrees of success) patterns, and just wished my results looked like those in the magazines! Luckily for me, a fabulous lady called Marianne from byhookcrochet got in touch to tell me about her classes coming to Steyning. As I wanted to catch my September issue timings I visited Marianne prior to the classes starting and had a one to one session. With a 5mm hook at hand and choice of beautiful wools to choose from we got going… Marianne is extremely patient and clear, and her instructions are easy to follow. Ten minutes later I was on my way to finishing my very first flower. I came away with a pack of instructions including how to make the flower, love heart, jam jar cover (which I understand is one of the tasks set for the beginner’s class). I felt much more confident about my work and am all set now making cushion covers and working towards that curly wurly scarf for the intermediates! I will be revisiting Marianne for the intermediate class though as there is so much more to learn. Crochet, once you have mastered the basic stitches and been taught by someone patient, is a great skill to have, very relaxing, something you can do whilst watching tv of an evening, and a good way to distract yourself from snacking! You could also be really well prepared and get ready for Christmas making jam jar covers and filling them with sweets or… jam?! Perfect gifts for friends and teachers alike. The class itself would also make a lovely gift for someone to learn something new. Check Marianne’s website for class details and book yourself in soon so as not to miss out. Having been taught to crochet by her mum at the age of about eight, Marianne has enjoyed relaxing with some wool and a hook for a while but with work, being a Mum herself and general day-to-day life taking priority she forgot how relaxing and just generally enjoyable crochet is. Since

picking up a hook again a year or so ago she has been inspired to make many items, using patterns, imagination and sometimes just plain copying something seen somewhere. Living in Bramber, although her working life has been heavily IT based she is now at her happiest being creative, but project management skills are in constant use! So with the idea of spreading the love of this craft, byhookcrochet was born – to teach people how to crochet! Marianne will be running new classes for Beginners and Improvers in September and October 2014. All classes will take place in Penfold Hall, Church Street, Steyning and will run from 10am – 1pm. Tea and coffee will be provided. Beginners £25 (to include wool, crochet hook and easy to follow instructions. No previous experience of crochet required. The beginners class will cover the fundamentals of crochet – how to hold the hook and yarn, creating a foundation chain, the three main crochet stiches and how to work in rows. By the end of the class you will have created something unique and should be hooked! To ensure that you all have individual attention there are only 4 places available on the Beginners classes. All details for Beginners/Improvers or one to one classes if you can’t make it to one of the courses are on the website: www.byhookcrochet.wordpress.com
