With nearly 20 years experience working in the industry and having run his own successful plumbing & heating company for 16 years of that time, West Sussex Heating’s Managing Director & Lead Engineer, Jon, really knows his stuff. Jon is originally from the Shoreham area and began sub-contracting boiler installations for British Gas back in the early days and as the boiler installation work greatly increased, so did the specialised skill set born from installing various different makes of boiler, in many situations on a daily basis. Today we install up to 25 boilers a month for this renowned company, making us vastly experienced and exceptionally good at what we do, and in 2013 we formed our own specialist heating company, which solely focuses on boiler replacement and central heating installation for our own local customers. For every new boiler we install, we’re dedicated to quality workmanship and providing an exceptional service, at an affordable price. Who we are... CALLS FOR STEYNING PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
Sarah Petty, a Mother from Steyning, has called for pedestrian crossing points to be installed after her son was hit by a car on his walk home from school. Sarah, of Shooting Field, said her 12-year-old son Finn was walking home from Steyning Grammar School, along Church Street, when a car turning left into Church Lane, drove over his feet. Sarah is campaigning and has launched a petition to ‘urgently address the need for pedestrian crossings’. She said: “After being personally affected, I feel it is my duty to draw attention to a much over-looked issue before a more serious accident occurs. “I think there should be a crossing where the St Cuthman’s statue is along Church Street near to the church yard. “There also needs to be one in Shooting Field for the primary school as loads of people walk to school in this town.“The more signatures we get, the more chance we have of getting these crossings. It’s for the safety of all, from preschoolers to pensioners, local residents and visitors. Thank you to everyone who has signed and shared already.” Her son Finn, suffered bruising and was taken to hospital where he was told he had not broken any bones. His mother added: “Finn has been having difficulty walking since the incident and had to miss a couple of days of school.
“The woman who was driving the car stopped and gave Finn a lift back home before she reported it to the police. “I don’t blame this woman and don’t want to take it any further. “I will be contacting our MP Nick Herbert to see if he can help.” David Barling, West Sussex county councillor for Bramber Castle, said he was aware of the accident in Church Street. He has said: “I will discuss this with our local Highways Manager Chris Stark as a first step to reviewing what can be done in order to improve safety at this point. “Church Street is very narrow, and I will liaise with Steyning Grammar School as well.” A West Sussex County Council spokesman said no applications for pedestrian crossings in the town had been received. He added: “We were sorry to hear that a boy was injured in this incident and we wish him a speedy recovery. “Highway improvements, such as pedestrian crossings, are considered through applications made under our ‘Community Highway Scheme’ process. This provides communities with a formal mechanism through which to raise requests for highway improvements. At present we have no applications for highway improvements like this for Church Street/Shooting Field in Steyning. “Alternatively, highway improvements can be considered through the Local Transport Improvement Programme, if the need is identified for a safer route to school via a School Travel Plan.” (Please go to 3d Degrees. Finns Crossing – Pedestrian Crossings in Steyning West Sussex – Created by Sarah Petty to sign). An Update From David Barling @ Bramber Castle – on the Proposed Crossing in Steyning ….. “As promised, I met with our WSCC Local Highways Manager, he is now looking into this together with our schools safety officer. The two schools will be contacted for their views. I intend to raise this at the next WSCC Chanctonbury County Local Committee which is on Wednesday 7th March conveniently at the Steyning Centre at 7pm. Mr Stark will then give some initial feedback to the committee. This is a public meeting with an opportunity for residents to speak, so I hope some of you will be able to come in order to better inform my colleagues. Its always better to email me at davidbarling@brambercastle.co.uk so I can pass on to relevant WSCC officers.“ David Barling

DOODLEY DOGS • 11
Doodley Dogs was the U.K’s first doggy day care of it’s kind. Having travelled the country working with dogs with serious behavioural problems it became apparent that the vast majority could be resolved quickly and kindly by draining the dogs energy... and so Doodley Dogs was created. A modern, flexible facility allowing dogs to socialise and exercise as and when suits the owner. We have a purpose built drainage system to keep the facility clean and stop the dogs smelling, fresh air ventilation systems to keep the air clean and fresh without any bugs getting in (Alabama rot free) webcams and viewing windows so owners can watch what their dog gets up to. Our team are all fully trained and expert dog handlers. Storrington has been running for 9 years and we have just opened a brand new centre in Three Bridges, Crawley as part of our expansion plan. We believe that every dog and every owner should be able to access a flexible, affordable facility that encourages socialisation and exercise. Dogs are naturally sociable animals, and in the wild will usually form packs. There are all sorts of negative connotations of ‘packs of dogs’ as dangerous and noisy, but they are in fact relatively calm and social

structures. It’s healthy for your dog to interact with his own kind and it’s important for every dog to have the opportunity to “speak dog” regularly. Most doggy clients integrate nicely into our carefully organised groups, and play happily all day. You’ll find that after a day with us your dog will have had so much fun that he’ll be so tired out he won’t even need to be walked.

Creatingchildren’sbedrooms If you’re expecting your first born baby, have a whole football team of ‘little darlings’ or just know someone who has, this article is dedicated to you. We are going to be turning your child’s bedroom in to their sanctuary. It is important for all children to feel like that they have their own space to call their own, somewhere they feel safe to be themselves, somewhere they can grow and flourish in to becoming young adults. So let’s start at the beginning; the nursery. 2017 is the year of the gender neutral nursery and no this doesn’t mean turning the whole room yellow! Grey is the current neutral colour of choice, pick the right tone and it can be very cool and calming. Team this with your favourite pastel shades to add a touch of colour. Fig.1
If you have a problem sleeper then go darker with your paint choice; choose a blue as dark as the night sky, accessorise the room very simply with white and make sure that the window dressing you choose is black out. Fig.2 Make sure to place a rug in your nursery, this not only softens the room but also provides a comfortable area for them to have play time. As they grow old enough to communicate with you, unfortunately, it becomes less about what is in fashion and looks cute to you and becomes more important to let them take the lead in the design process. Hard as it is to hand the reigns over to a little person with little or no sense of when to hold
back on colours and character wall stickers, but if they have created the bedroom they will enjoy being in it. Plus colourful bedrooms and themed bedrooms don’t have to look bad. Fig.3,4 In the older child’s bedroom storage becomes key – little people sure do collect a lot of stuff! We still love the selection that Ikea offer, try as you might to beat them, you just can’t, for toy storage they provide great value solutions that look great. Fig.5

ADUR VALLEY POOL SERVICE
A bit about us
A bit about swimming pools
I decided to get into the pool business back in 1999 when I was living in Texas. I had just lost my job and couldn’t afford to have my pool looked after and started learning about it myself. After learning the basics and yearning for a change from my corporate job of 12 years, I decided to start my own company offering pool service and repair work. I worked briefly for a company to learn the basics of pool care and started to pick up my own customers. That autumn, I took a job with a nationwide pool service company, Leslies, as a repair tech and stayed for almost a year which allowed me to learn basic repairs and get some exposure to larger repairs and installations. In the spring I picked up more customers and in the end was unable to do both so I decided to rely on my own customer base to provide my income. In 2005 I worked for Platinum Pools, who were one of the top 10 builders in the US at that time, as a designer and in 2006 I won their top designer award. I left in late 2007 after designing and building almost 100 pools. In 2008 I contracted, designed and built my first pool and built a couple more over the next 2 years but new financial regulations after the banking collapse meant it was getting tougher to compete in this area as a small company. I focused on the maintenance and repair side of the business & remained in the pool business until I returned to Steyning in 2016 with my daughter, Taylour who attends Steyning Grammar School in Church Street. In 2017 I did briefly work for a pool construction & service company here in West Sussex but after a couple of months I could tell it was not for me. Massive amounts of driving and a customer base who were generally unhappy, not with the service itself but with the lack of responsiveness and organization from the company itself, which turned out to be a common theme after I researched things a little more. I decided to leave that company and wait for spring to come around and see if I could enter the pool service arena myself.
A pool is forever once it is built, will require upkeep and will have equipment wear whether it is used heavily or barely at all. Here in the UK most pool equipment runs 24 hours a day, at least for the season so it has to work hard and the result is periodic repairs and regular maintenance service are required. What I have learned over the years is that with pools, there are general rules of thumb but each pool has its own personality if you like. This can be because of differences like immediate environment, equipment distance and location compared to pool and even pool shape. You almost have to get to know each pool, watch and figure out what it is doing especially when odd issues crop up. The better you know the pool, the easier this is to achieve.
Our Philosophy Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care. I would like to develop long term relationships with people who want pool care and are looking for someone to help with integrity and honesty. There are no secret tricks to keeping a pool. What is required are the basic tasks to be done on a consistent basis along with knowledge of the equipment and the ability to set that equipment to run at its optimum. Staying as local as possible will allow us to provide responsive and more cost effective service by being able to charge less labour than companies which cover a massive area & whose drivers typically drive 1000 miles per week or more driving up their fixed operating costs. If you would like help with your pool, have questions or even just want chemicals delivered (there is no delivery charge if you are in the area which receives Village Living!) then gives us a call or drop us an email and we will set up an appointment to come and visit. Thanks for reading.

An interview with
Debbie Boxall from Architectural Plants
Tell us a little bit about you and Architectural Plants We’re a 28-year-old specialist nursery in Pulborough. As horticultural experts, we offer a huge range of products, from semi-mature trees and shrubs, to smaller plants that customers can take away with them on the day. I run the garden design team, which we offer along with our planting and creative maintenance services. What does your day-to-day work involve? The team and I spend a lot of time on site with our customers. We’ll listen to their wants and needs, but we won’t be afraid to voice our opinion. We have been told that we’re ‘nice bossy’: if you tell us you want a low maintenance garden but choose a high maintenance style, we’ll be sure to let you know! We love what we do, and that passion and creativity is reflected in our designs. So Architectural Plants really is all about the plants? Plants are our priority, of course, but there are lots of other things going on as well. We have a café and shop on site. The café holds a number of workshops and specialty evenings throughout the year – from wine and cheese tasting, to willow weaving and floristry. We also run horticultural courses. Our Niwaki pruning course is

Shortbread Biscuits
RECIPE • 23
with chocolate, mixed seeds & fruit
There are times when a fast cookie is the only way to happiness… it doesn’t have to be a thing of beauty but of course the eyes being the gateway to the brain, it helps. These shortbread biscuits are ideal to satisfy a sweet craving and whilst all that butter and sugar is devastating for the calorie counter you’re really only going to have one or two right plus the fruity and mixed seed topping has the appearance of a healthy snack so you can always fool yourself into thinking these are good for you!
Ingredients: • 225g unsalted butter – room temperature • 110g caster sugar • 225g plain flour • 110g cornflour • a pinch of salt • 1 packet of mixed fruit and seeds • 1 tablespoon icing sugar • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder • a little milk to mix Line a large tray with parchment paper. Place the butter and sugar into a large bowl and cream together until light and fluffy. Sift the flour and cornflour into the bowl, add the salt and mix together until smoothly combined. bring together into a ball and set aside. Stretch out a large piece of clingfilm and lay the shortbread dough onto it, gently pulling it out into a sausage shape… roll the cling film around it and then roll the sausage out to your desired thickness. Wrap tightly and pop in the fridge for 30 mins for it to harden. When you’re ready to bake, pre-heat the oven to 170C, unwrap the sausage from the clingfilm and slice it into biscuits, lay these out onto the baking tray and sprinkle with your selection of chopped nuts, seeds and dried fruit and bake for 15 to 20 minutes until just beginning to turn golden, then set aside on a wire rack to cool. To make the chocolate drizzle, simply add a dash of milk or water to the cocoa powder and icing sugar and gently stir to combine into a thick paste… then thin down slowly with more milk to reach the desired consistency. Eat and of course, enjoy!
