Groundsman Read! Kevin Read, Head Groundsman at Steyning Grammar School won the prestigious FA’s Groundsman of the Year Award for the South East of England earlier this year, and has been put forward for the National Award, in recognition of his contribution to football by providing all year round, a very high standard of playing surface for matches to take place. The judges were suitably impressed by Kevin, the quality of the pitches and his dedication
to looking after all sports marks and grounds for the school. He in turn is very proud of all three pitches, but particularly fond of the latest addition, appropriately called ‘Wembley’. ‘It is important to keep the surfaces in perfect condition, regardless of the frequency of use, sometimes we have as many as three games per pitch over one weekend.’, says Kevin. Kevin who has worked the grounds at Steyning Grammar School for the past seven years was delighted to learn about the award and even more to find out that he had also being put forward for the National Award, a prized honour for which only a dozen or so nominees are considered. ‘If I win it,’ he says, ‘I will definitely look forward to being on the pitch at the real Wembley!’
Elan had a great day… The weather turned out to be glorious for the Steyning Festival Children’s Parade. Elan Nursery’s Pre-School children and staff attended for the first time this year and a fabulous time was had by all. The theme was Diamonds to tie in with the Queens Diamond Jubilee so the children and staff decorated their t-shirts according and accessorised with crowns and flags. The children summarised the event beautifully with the following quotes: ‘The big carriage at the front of the crowd was my favourite’ Rory, aged 3yrs 11 months. ‘The samba music was very loud but it was good’ Darcy, aged 4yrs 2 months. ‘I liked seeing everyone have fun’ Robbie, aged 3yrs 9 months.
St Andrews St Andrews pre school in Steyning was also involved in the celebrations. Continually raising funds to supply additional equipment to develop the experiences of the children and, with over £1600 already raised through events the most recent was in aid of the queens diamond Jubilee. The community events were well attended, young and old mixing together. The Pre School family picnic raised over £500! The children took part in a sponsored walk from the pre school round to Clays Hill and back, wearing their specially made Jubilee tshirts! they were all just brilliant on the walk! St Andrews would like to thank the following companies for
their kind donations towards their raffle and auction Jubilee event: Springwells Hotel Steyning, Amberley Museum, Whispers and Body Matters Steyning, Wickwoods Country Club and Spa, The Little Shop Steyning, Steyning Book Shop Fairies Shop, and Wiston House. St Andrews are looking to extend their outdoor adventures, they are in discussion with the Management of the Steyning Centre with regard to creating a Story Telling Corner and a Sensory Garden, looking at various options. With these projects they are looking for sponsorships to help with the funding, so if you know of any local companies you feel might be interested in helping them to create a wonderful story and garden area please call Marion Pickup on 01903 815207.

This month Debby makes over Zoe Bates from Valerie Manor... “As the owner and manager of Valerie Manor Nursing & Residential Care Home in Upper Beeding I don’t have much time to spend on myself. It was therefore such a special treat to receive a makeover by people from 3 of our local businesses in Steyning.
before
Stella from Rococo’s allowed me to wear some of her elegant clothes, jewellery and a bag from her Summer Collection. I was then pampered by Tim at Simone’s and given a new style which I love! Debby from Model Info Bureau organised and looked after me throughout the whole experience and completed my day by doing my makeup prior to my photos.
I really enjoyed this with Debby’s wealth of experience in modelling and her professional son Henry Hayward supporting me through the day. Thank you to you all for providing me with such a special afternoon.”

Bring two of your favourite outfits and feel perfectly pampered and beautiful as you are photographed. Choose a free photograph to take home to remember your day. MIB Makeovers make wonderful presents, and are ideal for getting ready for big events. They can be done individually and also for groups of up to 6 people. Segway Unleashed By Ginette Stevens
S
egwaying is something I’ve been keen to try for some time and my interest was reignited recently after seeing the activity on a couple of prime time television shows. I did not know of any local firms offering Segway but a quick internet search found me Segway Unleashed which is situated just outside of Godstone in Surrey. I contacted them via email and was delighted when the company owner, Ben Morling, invited me and a pal up to try the sport. Segway Unleashed is located just 15minutes from junction 10 of the M23 (or 5mins from junction 6 of the M25). The directions you receive when you book are very clear and even include a map for exact parking instructions. The offices are situated in a converted stable block on a beautiful 100 acre 17th century farm. Ben set up his Company a year ago, having successfully run a zorbing franchise for over four years. He was keen for a new challenge and, after seeing and trying the Segway’s, felt that this was just the new start he needed. He not only runs this business but is also the main Segway dealer for the South of England and London. One of these machines will set you back approximately £5500 – a serious piece of equipment! Ben works with his second in command (his words not mine!) Craig. They currently have four Segways on site and this means that groups of up to eight at a time is an ideal number. When I and my husband Nick went, we were with another couple. To us, this was great as once on our machines, we didn’t have to get off. But Ben explained that bigger groups worked just as well as when not on the Segway, the participants chatted amongst
July 2012 • Village Living
themselves and it became much more interactive and competitive (there is a race at the end of the session – more about that later!). Segways themselves have been around for over 10 years and were invented by Dean Kamen in the USA as a form of personal mobility. Unveiled on 3rd December 2010 in a privately owned park in Manhattan, the story was reported on Good Morning America and interest quickly took hold at this novel and alternative form of transport. They are environmentally friendly as they run via an electrically charged battery. No petrol or diesel in sight! The Segway works via a computer and motor in the base. It has five gyroscopic sensors which detect the shift of weight and balance by the rider and responds accordingly. Once mounted, the balance and tilt of the rider drives the machine forward or backwards. It stands up on its own and is very safe to use. The key to success is balance and by leaning forward or pulling backwards on the control bar. Sounds easy eh? Well the time had come to see just how easy it really was. The four novices followed Craig out to a field where our machines were waiting. Craig ran through the safety elements we needed to know and then showed us up close and personal how the machine worked. With our motocross helmets on and nervous smiles all round, we mounted our Segways. I felt little unsure at first especially when I first moved around the field but within minutes had got the hang of it and was circling merrily around. We started on a beginners setting which meant we were restricted on speed for safety reasons. Probably quite a good thing as you feel secure very quickly.
The second part of our session was through another field into a small wood. Here we went around a track with various tree roots, dips and turns. This part was to help us develop our technique and gain more confidence. There were some very serious faces as we trundled around. All through the session Ben or Craig take photos. It would be impossible once on the Segway to do this yourself as you need both hands to steer the machine. I must say it also makes you try harder knowing you are being captured on film! At the end of the session you can decide whether to have the photos e-mailed to you (normally the number is between 100 and 150 shots) for a nominal cost. As all of us felt we had truly mastered the Segway and the techniques needed, we moved to an open field where a racetrack awaited us. The speed of the Segway was increased for us to the maximum level. It was time for (in my eyes) some real fun! We soon were whizzing around the field, taking risky turns and speeding downhill. What a blast! Then Ben called us back to the start of the track for the final part of the morning – the Race. Normally not a competitive person (no really I’m not!); with Nick there to race against I felt my adrenalin levels rise. I went round at a pretty good speed and was quietly confident. A good score would be under 115 seconds. A really good score would be under 110. With the other couple’s scores revealed first (both over 110), the drum roll started for Nick and me… There was one second between us – I was 109 seconds and Nick was 108. I’m sure that I saw him slip Ben a fiver before the start, but there is no photo to prove it. In true sportsman fashion I

grudgingly congratulated my husband through gritted teeth. It made for an interesting conversation in the car on the way home! So back to the offices we rode and our session (which lasted about an hour) was over. Sadly we had to dismount and leave our Segways to charge for the next lucky people. The activity is only restricted by height and weight. You need to be five and a half stone at least in weight and over four foot seven inches. The best time on the race circuit Ben said was recorded by a ten year old, and they have had several people around 75 years old taking part! It is an all-weather sport – in all this rain we have had recently the guys have only had to cancel one day. The X2 models we rode are off road machines so can cope with most surfaces. It is also totally hands on – although fully
supervised at all times, you are in charge of what you do. No following instructors or being kept to a certain speed. The cost is reasonably priced during the week at £32 for two people. At the weekend it rises to £52 per couple (depending on what sort of session you’re involved in, prices can be higher, but this is the standard rate to be in a normal group session). But if you mention this Village Living magazine, you will get a small discount on this price. Gift vouchers are also available through the website or contacting Ben directly on email. It is great for hen or stag dos, corporate events and various club outings. Ben can also take the Segways to you if your land is suitable. Although 8 people is the ideal, Ben can always run two separate sessions so up to 1416 people can attend.
I would thoroughly recommend trying Segways. I have two pieces of advice for you though. Wear sensible shoes as balance is key, and don’t try it near the edge of a cliff – the man who brought the firm in 2010 had a heart attack whilst riding one and with the weight of his body pushing forward on the Segway, tumbled over the edge…

eeting the head of the art department sarah strachen was exactly like meeting up and catching up with an old friend, Having lived in the same parts of south london we discovered we had a handful of friends in common too, what a small world. The art room is a roomy building filled with fantastic displays of various Art! Ranging from the Barbara Hepworth inspired incredible soap carvings made by the Year 5 boys complete with own home made art gallery… to the batik print insects, batik paper wax, colour blending, squashy pop art sculptured iconic packaging, and screen printed bags, and the tremendous work presented for scholarship. sompting Abbotts featured this summer in the Adur Art Trial with a piece of work exhibited by everyone in the school. sarah is a really positive and inspirational teacher; she totally believes that there is a topic in this subject for everyone to enjoy and achieve good marks in, irrelevant to artistic talent. The range of creativity in this room is stunning; there are certainly some incredibly talented children at work here! To name just a couple of examples of this work is everywhere with some brilliant Year 7 screen printed own designed shopping bags, and the most incredible huge beanbag sized squashy pop art sculptures of iconic packaging such as marmite and ketchup! A brilliant selection of paper Mache tea party plates created by year 6 (complete with battenburg slices – my personal favourite). My favourite piece of work in the room is an amazing creation, *school Textile Piece* an idea sarah thought up, in which every member of the school has wound textile around a ring, at the centre of each ring is a piece of fimo type clay individually named and decorated and then linked together with ribbon, literally joining everyone together and strung up so you can see each circle clearly – truly stunning. Curriculum for art begins from year 3, although special projects like the textile piece is worked on by the younger ones; and right up to year 8 when those going for school scholarships will get their work together and sent off. Two amazing pupils this year have been awarded Artistic scholarships to join lancing College and Brighton College, with some absolutely fantastic displays from their classmates. sarah’s background is london based having studied at
Kingston university and taught for many years in london, she has moved to sussex with her family and enjoys every moment of teaching at sompting Abbotts. Once again I was reminded of how magical, and traditional this amazing school is. You can literally never be sure whether or not a troop of nature finding pupils will suddenly appear from the depths of the picturesque fields or something equally charming, the children are always so beautifully mannered and polite. It has honestly been a pleasure to visit sompting Abbotts and meet the staff, they are an incredible team of dedicated, hardworking and enthusiastic teachers that inspire their pupils in every subject with such knowledge and passion. This school has certainly got that extra added wow factor… I love it and only wish I could have been taught there myself!

The Bridge Inn Shoreham-by-Sea

ike me you have probably driven right across the Bridge and kind of known it’s there but have not been in. Well next time I advise you to stop and go in for a meal! What a great venue, and to be honest, on a gorgeous sunny day like today, sitting in the garden amidst palm trees, whitewashed buildings with the river Adur tide in, you could have pretty much been anywhere on the Med! I will certainly be returning with my family and dog, and only wish I could justify sleeping over but as I only live ten minutes away – probably not… Imogen who runs the show at The Bridge has been in Shoreham for 10 years and holding fort at the bridge for the last 4.5 – having spent most of her career in Europe. She obviously enjoys her work and is a fabulous, welcoming and charming hostess who clearly makes it a really fun place to both work and visit! There are regular music events – the most recent of which was the Folk on the River Festival Live Folk Music Weekend, featuring great traditional folk singing and musicians in the beer garden such as the Trevor Clawson Band and Slipjig. Great fun was definitely had by all! Imogen and her team, host at least 4 garden events including Shoreham Air Show – which will be amazing, firstly the view from the garden will be the perfect plane spotting-spot and with a fantastic band booked, it will definitely be the place to be! End of summer celebrations, regulars birthdays and regular – weather permitting – Sunday barbecues in the garden with sausages and fresh fish – mackerel & mussels. Sunday lunches are available for the little ones who don’t want a full plate of roast dinner, and for mums/dads who are quite frankly fed up with sharing! They have reached July 2012 • Village Living
a perfect balance between young families and the older generation here, and the atmosphere is lively and fun. Although they prefer not to host and cater for weddings, Imogen is more than happy to put up the boy’s and or girl’s family the night before! With the wedding shop and florist literally over the road, they are more than happy to take deliveries and help with the preparations and in calming the nerves of the terrified bride or groom on the day! The B&B is literally like having a spare room to put people up in, I shall be sending our visitors over Norfolk Bridge to the Bridge in for the overnight stay. Tots that Rock is an event for the little ones, held here twice a week with Grandpa George on the guitar... very popular. Onto the food now, which by the way was great, the fish couldn’t have been any fresher had it literally jumped out of the water and onto our plates – yum…! With an extensive menu offering a grand selection, from the basics of homemade burgers and homemade chips, sandwiches and jacket potatoes, platters for sharing, a delicious and varied sounding vegetarian menu and an amazing
specials board, with selections from both land and sea we went straight in for our main courses chosen from todays specials board. Beer battered fish and chips served with homemade chips and peas, for Roger and our son aged 2, who made very light work of this dish, the fish was huge! Really fresh and perfectly crispy homemade chips. Local pan fried fillet of Sea Bass with

samphire grass, sea Persil and garlic Tiger Prawns was my choice, the prawns were enormous and very tasty, pan fried to perfection, I didn’t leave a crumb. I am a big fan of samphire grass anyway, so this was for me, the perfect accompaniment. Obviously after helping Roger completely clear his plate Billy and I had to share a dessert, the selection was a little too tempting and I had to make a choice between the very tasty Mixed Fruit Eton Mess, the sticky Toffee Pudding and my fave, the Cheesecake…It was no disappointment; it arrived in a fabulous 70’s style glass and was truly delicious, perfect end to a perfect meal. A huge thanks to Imogen and her team for having us, we will most definitely be back for more! (I’m only disappointed I couldn’t hang around for one of the éclairs that the chef was apparently preparing for later…)

Hypnotherapy & Sport

e have been bombarded with stories about the top athletes and their preparations for the forthcoming Olympics, which start later this month. In previous articles, I have discussed the use of Hypnotherapy to improve performance. Many individuals use sports Psychologists to improve mental aspects of their game. However, I wonder how many use talking therapies, such as Hypnotherapy, to deal with the emotional issues that prevent them from performing to their maximum potential Many of the problems that I deal with in the sports field are simple psychological problems that are quickly and effectively resolved. I will give a few examples but have changed certain details (excluding the problem and outcome), to prevent breaking confidentiality rules. A young tennis player, who had been told she had great potential, but could not reach her expectations in competitive situations. under hypnosis, it soon became apparent that the problem was her father and coach. Her attention was focused on him and his rants during matches, to the extent
that her performance and confidence were badly affected. Treatment included helping her to become more confident in her abilities and focusing less on her father’s behaviour during matches. A professional golfer found that she had a problem with one specific shot, but only in competitions. visualisation techniques were used, along with treatment to deal with the root cause and associated anxiety. A show-jumper who had fallen off her horse and landed badly. Once her injury had been healed, she had lost her nerve and developed almost a phobia about riding. All major memories have an emotion linked to them; in this case fear. It is possible to eliminate/ minimise the fear, so that the memory and thoughts about the future could be recalled without recreating the fear. Coupled with this, good memories of previous successful events were brought to mind and harnessed to provide confidence once again. In the first two cases, the client had not been aware of the cause(s) of the problems, but all reported significant improvement in performance after treatment. The issues existed at
subconscious level and the use of hypnosis enabled the problems to be identified and resolved; quickly and effectively. when you look at some of our top sportsmen and women who do not reach their potential, I wonder just how much difference Hypnotherapy could make to their performance and emotional wellbeing. A little-known additional benefit of Hypnotherapy in sport is the ability to improve injury healing time, by using the mind to help heal the body. Time is money for many professionals, so that anything that can be done to reduce time-out will be of benefit. If you have all the skills you need, but can’t pinpoint why you are underperforming, give me a ring to discuss what can be done. Children can also benefit from the techniques available.

Tree-mendous!
A
t Big Plant Nursery, we have a wide range of ornamental trees of all shapes and sizes, deciduous and evergreen. we produce a lot of the trees ourselves, such as ginkgo biloba cultivars, Birch trees and Japanese maples. To complement our homegrown trees, we also have a selection of fantastic trees sourced and grown in the uK. we are able to get hold of most tree species, so if there is a particular tree you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact us at the nursery. Here are a couple of popular trees that we can order for you and have in within 5 working days! Cupressus sempervirens ‘Pyramidalis’, the Italian Cypress is a narrow almost pencil-like coniferous tree with dark green foliage and prickly brown cones. very architectural. It is tolerant of poor soils and grows to its full potential in a sunny spot. It will grow quite happily in a container as long as it has regular watering. Clip regularly to maintain a compact, neat appearance. They prefer to be positioned in full sun, but sheltered , can tolerate all soils, but avoid waterlogged areas; very dry soils will need extra watering growing
up to 4 metres, they can be pruned. These trees are slow growing, with an architectural shape, and are immediately reminiscent of Italian holidays! Plagianthus regius, Ribbonwood, is a beautiful small tree endemic to New Zealand where it grows in areas of lowland forest. It matures to a lovely straight trunked specimen. The leaves on the young tree are bright green with toothed margins, changing to more elongate as the plant ages. Although it has an attractive dainty appearance, it can withstand strong winds and will do well in most soils. In it’s native New Zealand, the Ribbonwood is one of the few deciduous trees, however the established tree at our nursery retains it’s leaves for most of the winter. Dropping them just before it comes back into growth in spring. Preferring full sun to part shade, these trees are tolerant of windy and coastal situations, ideal for our sussex coast. They are happy in all soils, but very dry soils will need extra watering. Eventually growing up to 5 metres, they can be pruned generally they are a fast growing, semi – evergreen, pyramidal tree.
