HOME SECURITY SAFETY Whilst it is always encouraging to hear that crime statistics in the UK relating to property theft have effectively halved since their peak in the mid 1990’s, it continues to be as important as ever to ensure your home security is up to date and effective. There were a reported 649,000 domestic burglaries in 2013, which equates to 1 in 50 households. This is a huge decrease from the 1.7 million in 1993 however; recent insurance company research suggests that whilst there have been fewer break-ins in recent years, thieves seem to be getting away with a far more valuable hoard. As a locksmith, I have seen at first hand the devastating financial and emotional cost for victims of domestic property crime. However, by taking just a few simple measures you can dramatically reduce the chances of it happening to you. Even something as simple as marking personal property or ensuring that your garden shed is secured can reduce the opportunity for a burglar to cash in.
• Ensure all locks fitted to your home conform to your minimum insurance requirements. If you’re not sure, ask a locksmith to come and give you some advice. • Make sure all internal doors to conservatories or garages have appropriate locks and that all the frames are in good condition. Garage windows should also be checked. • Consider adding reinforced glass or even blocking up glass if you feel side windows could be smashed to gain access to keys or to gain access. Decorative grilles and bars can also improve your security without being particularly unsightly. • Consider adding security bolts to the tops and bottoms or French doors and sash jammers to UVPC doors and windows. • Outhouses such as sheds and garages should be locked with a suitably approved product. • Secure side and back gates with an approved lock.
• Finally, never leave your keys in the lock or on display nearby. Always find a safe place to keep them preferably not in reach. SAVE UPPER BEEDING POST OFFICE For those of you who did not see the parish news letter, I’m afraid to say that the post office network is having a new look at how they operate and how they pay there sub postmasters. The post office would like all sub postmasters to not rely on the post office as their main income, they would like us to make our income from retail sales. however for those of you that know my branch, you will know how small an area I have for retail sales. Because of this the post office are making it financially unviable for me to stay in my present location. I have the option to close the branch as of now, or to try and relocate the post office to bigger premises within the village, I have had Lots of support from the village and I have decided to stay for the time being and hope that a bigger premises becomes available.
There is no time frame as to when I might have to close at the moment, but I will let you all know what is happening as and when I get to know more details, can I say a big thank you to all of my customers who have come to see me to ask if there is anything they can do to help my situation it means a lot to me . Our local village needs it’s post office, it’s a main part of the community, a post office is a place for the young and the old, a place where they can trust a postmaster to look after there needs , who else would know if an elderly person in the village had not been seen for a few days, or a vulnerable person had not received there benefit money , who else would know if someone was getting forgetful or if someone was taking advantage of some one, the post office is the hub of the community. The Bee Well Centre
by Ginette Stevens
There never seems enough time in the day for some much needed ‘me time’, so when Leonie Dunlop, owner and founder of The Bee Well Centre invited me to try out a couple of her treatments, I was on my way before she had put the phone down!
S
ituated just off of the Washington roundabout, I was pleasantly surprised at the rural, peaceful location. I felt more relaxed just parking up and looking around at all the greenery. Leonie’s treatment rooms are set in a detached building which would not look out of place in a children’s fairy story. With a beautiful laburnum just about to bloom, and daffodils, cherry blossom and forget-me-nots full of colour, I couldn’t have asked for a better location. Leonie met me at the door and, taking my coat and bag, offered me a chair so we could have a chat and a cup of green tea with lemon before the treatments began. I had checked out Leonie’s website beforehand and, from all the different and interesting things on offer, had chosen a massage and some reiki healing. I always think it’s interesting to learn how someone starts off on a chosen career and so this is was my first question to Leonie. She was very honest about how things had begun; she was in a difficult place, bringing up two children alone, with no career plans or job prospects on the horizon. She wanted to get back to work but didn’t want to take any old thing. She looked at the courses available at her local college and saw massage was on offer. She liked the look of this and signed up. She was quite taken back at the level of detail involved. Soon she was caught up not only learning about massage techniques, but also the anatomy and physiology of humans and what affects what. In her words ‘I took to it like a duck to water’. Since that first course over 15 years ago, Leonie has widened her learning to include two years clinical hypnotherapy, NLP and life coaching training with Phil Parker (inventor of The Lightening Process), Swedish, Sports and Pregnancy massage, advanced Reflexology, Reiki and Emotional Freedom Technique(EFT) training’. With each new treatment learnt, Leonie’s confidence has soared and she continues to add qualifications to her impressive CV. One of the things I was particularly interested in was that she is a level 4 sports masseur. Being rather a sporty person, I was more that overdue for a massage. Leonie explained that she likes to turn the treatment into a relaxing experience by tailoring the massage to the individual. She
will often use not only sports techniques but deep tissue and relaxing massage too. We soon moved on to how I was feeling, whether I had any particular problems, what I wanted Leonie to focus on with the massage and general health and medical information she needed to know. With paperwork completed, it was time to start my first treatment. While Leonie took our tea things away, I settled myself onto the treatment table. It was a joy to feel the heated under-blanket and I was soon settled, listening to the birds singing outside and the relaxing background music. How do I explain the next hour? It was bliss. Well most of it! I did have some rather tight muscles that Leonie needed to release. But what I really liked was that Leonie explained what she was doing, what muscles she was relaxing and asked how I was finding the experience. She also asked if the pressure was ok and if I was comfortable. I am certainly not lying when I say it was one of the best massages I have ever had and, a week on, I still feel more relaxed and my muscles haven’t tightened back up even though I have exercised most days. An hour seems to fly by when you are experiencing such a great treatment. I could have lay there for the rest of the day! But as all good things come to an end, so did my massage. It was Reiki time. I was quite intrigued to learn

more about Reiki. Leonie practices Ascension Reiki and is also qualified to level 2 in traditional Usui Reiki. Her Ascension Reiki trainer was Keith Hodge, who is based in Hove. Reiki is a natural form of energy healing, using ‘life force energy’. Originating in Japan, it is used for relaxation and stress reduction and to improve the quality of life by strengthening the body’s energy and its ability to heal itself. Reiki is channelled through the hands by the healer, and the energy travels to wherever it is needed, be it on a physical, mental, emotional or spiritual level. Ascension Reiki, Leonie explained, is an amazingly powerful form of hands-on healing which helps to clear physical, emotional and spiritual blockages by rebalancing the Chakras and enabling the body to heal itself. I wasn’t sure how my Chakras were and what needed rebalancing, so I was fascinated to see how I felt during and after this treatment. Leonie started by placing her hands on my head and leaving them there for a few minutes. She then moved down to rest her hands on other parts of my body where my chakras were situated. It was not intrusive, but rather relaxing as I could feel the heat of her hands (and the flow of energy I guess) on me. She finished with a little
reflexology. When we spoke about it after, Leonie said she couldn’t feel so much energy going into my head, but my stomach was really active and received a lot of energy. Read into that what you will ladies and gents! For me, the massage was the best treatment but I think that was because I could feel the effects immediately. I loved the Reiki and hope that it has helped rebalance me. For an hour’s massage, Leonie offers an introductory price of £28 – 20% off the normal cost which is amazing value. Her 20% discount is for any treatment on your first visit. Future plans for Leonie include opening a yoga studio next door to the treatment room. Leonie also travels to Spain and India where she keeps up to date on all the latest treatments available. When she is away, she has a small team of excellent therapists who look after her clients so that The Bee Well Centre is always open for business. At such a low price for your initial treatment, you’ve just got to give it a go. You won’t be sorry you did… The Bee Well Centre is located just off the Washington Roundabout. Telephone number – 07867 985863. Website – www.flexibletherapies.com. Or mail Leonie at flexibletherapies@ymail.com.

16 • THE STEYNING FESTIVAL
! d e t t i n K t e G
Steyning Festival is knitting the community together...
The organisers of the 2014 Steyning Festival want to make sure the festival that runs from 24 May to 9 June captures everyone’s interest and, most importantly, knits the community together in a new way. Someone suggested ‘knit-bombing’ round Steyning. So now Steyning’s Parish Council has given its blessing, that is exactly what everyone is being asked to do! “Guerilla knitting is when you ‘knit a town’ by creating ‘knit bombs’, bits of knitting or crochet that add a little extra warmth to our environment and bring a smile to people’s faces,” said Christine Aubrey, the Steyning Festival’s Chair, who has already dug out her knitting needles for a woolly assault on the town. “ Doorways, phone boxes, railings , columns – all have been covered or draped in stylistic ‘knit-bombs’ in other areas, so why not here where we can celebrate the festival at the same time? Prizes will be awarded for the best one. Check out www.steyningfestival.co.uk for details.” Whether or not you join in the commando knitting brigade that will be giving Steyning a cosy make-over, there are quite a few things in the Steyning Festival events line-up that are guaranteed to have you in stitches – without the need for needles! TV comedienne, Josie Lawrence has announced she will be joining Neil Mullarkey and the rest of the Comedy Store players for a ‘Serious Night Out’ on 24 May and there are a few other laughter gigs besides – The Raymond and Mr Timpkins Revue on 31 May, The Noise Next Door (1 June) and Sunny Ormande, who plays the “outrageous and raunchy Lilian Bellamy” in Radio 4’s The Archers and who will be solving mysteries like whether Victoria Wood really did pull a pint in the Bull at her one woman show on the same night (1 June). But knitting and dress-making skills could come in useful if you join one of the workshops making costumes for the unique 1614 Dance at Wiston House on 8 June (there will be a caller, like at a barn dance). There should be a few laughs too at the costume workshop on 10 May, 10am-4pm at the Catholic Church Room. Children in Steyning have already been covered in stitches if they have been involved in carnival costume making May 2014 • Village Living
sessions in the run up to the children’s ‘Steyning Welcomes the World’ parade which will feature giant animal costumes representing the five continents. More volunteers are still needed – both children and adults – to walk on the wild side with the animals on the opening day (11am 24 May). (Contact Katherine Lawrie:klawriejewellery@btconnect.com tel: 07866 835640 if you would like to volunteer. Each child needs an accompanying adult). THINKING BIG Word has it that the Guiness Book of Records is being invited along on Bank Holiday Monday as the town lays on what is hoped will be the biggest ever Steyning community picnic in history at the Memorial Playing Field. Music, wacky races, upmarket fast food, family entertainment and the chance to ‘have a go’ at a wide range of sports, from gymnastics to bowls and cricket promises to draw in the crowds. There will also be strawberries and cream, candyfloss, cream teas and a bar to add to the attractions. Sign up for the Cuthman Wheelbarrow Race if you dare, (contact Community Picnic organizer, Rob Billington: robert@rpbconsultancy.co.uk) Dog-lovers will not be left out either at the picnic– the winners of a fun dog show could win an oil on canvas portrait of their pooch (worth £490) by Harrods in-house pet portrait artist, Sara Abbott (Sara-Abbott.com). Registration from 11am.

17 • THE STEYNING FESTIVAL
As well as a number of community family-oriented events, there is a rich literary programme boasting authors like Gruffalo creator, Julia Donaldson; ex Radio 4 Today programme presenter, Ed Stourton; current Today programme’s James Naughtie; thriller writers, Natalie Haynes and Julia Crouch; BBC’s foodie, Valentine Warner; Scottish poet Paul Jennings and other children’s writers, Jo Simmons and Gillian McClure. A high point, of course, is Jonathan Dimbleby’s Any Questions being broadcast from Steyning Grammar School to celebrate its 400th anniversary. But it will also be fascinating to find out who the mystery guest is from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office attending the popular literary lunch at Wiston House on 28 May. MUSICAL DELIGHTS Another string to its bow, of course, is the Festival’s music programme of delights. The star guests this time are undoubtedly The Sixteen, the internationally-renowned ensemble, whose concert at St Andrew and St Cuthman is already sold out. But music fans should also grab tickets for organist Michael Hoeg’s recital at the same venue – his distinguished student was the well-known

Charlotte Church (29 May). Pianist Maria Marchant, of Wigmore Hall and Southbank fame is also in town (2 June) and young musicians get a chance to show that Steyning’s got talent too on 4 June. There are a host of other wonderful community, arts and cultural events lined up for the Steyning Festival, including the famous Ann Poupard Theatre Trail (now named after the festival’s late founder and always a huge draw) and intriguing productions like ‘The Emerald Crown’, a youth production telling the story of the animals’ fight for survival in the Amazonian rain forest (young performers – over 7 years – are still being sought for this witty, fun musical (Contact admin@steyningfestival.co.uk if you know a child or teenager who would like to take part). And while you study the action-packed programme delivered to your door or visit the Steyning Festival website for information, you can, of course, get knitting… and start identifying your targets for your ‘knit-bombs’ around Steyning this festival. As they say: ‘Keep Knitting… and carry Yarn!’ To book tickets: www.steyningfestival.co.uk or Steyning Bookshop for Programme Details and Prices.
Knit Bomb!
So what is a knit bomb? Yarn bombing, yarn storming or guerrilla knitting is a type of street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint. Knit bombing can happen anywhere from lampposts to bicycles, trees to statues. Generally with a warm hearted message, this form of cosy art is making us all smile.
How to Knit Bomb
Take photos and tell the world. Let us know your progress on our Facebook (www.facebook.com/SteyningFestival) or anywhere else for that matter. This is a community project so we’re all in this together!
And lastly, we’ve sought permission from the council for people to contribute to our knitting project so you won’t need to don your ninja outfits and creep out at the dead of night – unless you want to of course. . .
Choose something easy, like a lamppost or a railing. This way you’ll be able admire your handy work instantly and move on to a larger more challenging project. Make your knit bomb tight. You don’t want a saggy bomb so if the rail is 18cm then make your knitting 16cm and stretch it. Attaching your bomb. Some people stitch them some people use cable ties. Either works or a combination of both, stitched seams but with a cable tie at the top and bottom for added security. Leave a name tag so that we can identify your work, I’m sure you’re very proud and we are too. www.villagelivingmagazine.co.uk | tel: 0785 2231512

21 • FUNK THE FAMILY
Keep the kids happy and the grownups smiling at this seaside festival, featuring the funkiest of Brighton’s musicians and entertainers... In association with Brighton Fringe Festival, Funk The Format present an all-day family festival with a difference. You won’t find bored adults that feel compelled to do the hokey cokey through gritted teeth, or will you see kids covering their ears to the crashes and clangs of heavy metal. No, no, no. Funk The Family isn’t just about the kids or the adults. It’s about the whole family having a laugh, getting down to the sounds and being, well, funky. Set bang smack by the gorgeous seaside of Brighton & Hove, on Sunday 1st June Fatboy Slim’s Big Beach Café will witness a plethora of Brightonian talent. From classically-trained musician Joss Peach (AKA The Muppets’ Rowlf The Dog) getting jazzy on his piano to The Circus Project offering adults and kids tandem trapeze workshops, this all-day festival is for the whole family. The line-up is immense and features the crème of Brighton talent (please see full listing at end). The brainchild of music journalist turned radio presenter and events organiser, Lucy ‘Elle J’ Small, Funk The Family is serious about the quality of the music and entertainment. “Instead of going for big names, we chose big talent,” says Elle J who currently presents her popular Funk The Format radio show on Brighton’s Radio Reverb 97.2FM and www.radioreverb.com. Having previously written about numerous artists before they were signed, including Dizzee Rascal, Lady Sovereign and Ms Dynamite, for publications like The Face, The Observer and Blues & Soul, Elle J has a well-respected ear for emerging talent. “I moved from Hackney to Hove seven years ago to start a family,” Elle J says. “After emerging from the baby and toddler years, I have discovered so many amazing musicians and entertainers in Brighton & Hove and really want to shout about them. As a mum, I also get frustrated by family events being just about the kids. Us mums and dads need a laugh and a boogie too!”

The Placebo Effect
N
early everyone has experienced a placebo effect in some form or another! For example, the fact that most people take medicine tells me that on some level they must believe in it or expect it to work, or believe in the doctor who prescribed it, or even in the improvement heard about in other people. This belief, or expectation, activates the placebo effect. Of course, the drug works too but your mind can enhance it….. or suppress it. The same placebo can do opposite things, for instance, depending on what the person believes it is for. If patients are given a placebo and told it will relax their muscles then it will, but the same placebo can cause muscular tension if the person believes that’s what it does. Similarly, believing that it is a stimulant will increase heart rate and blood pressure, but thinking that it is a depressant gives it the opposite effect – reducing heart rate and blood pressure. Placebos can enhance athletic performance. In a 2007 study, nonprofessional athletes were given morphine during a pre-competition training phase. On the day of a competition the morphine was secretly swapped for a placebo but the athletes still experienced an increase in pain endurance and physical performance
that would be expected from taking morphine. Other scientific studies have shown the benefits in expectation from different aspects of treatment. Therefore expectations are higher when a person is given a pill of a particular colour or brand, or an injection rather than a pill. The environment and even the credibility of the person administering the treatment are important factors. To demonstrate this (in one of his more serious programmes), Darren Brown took several groups of people including: smokers, people suffering from phobias, health and confidence issues. They were taken to a bogus but impressive, office block, set up to look like a laboratory, where they were treated by people in white coats who administered nothing but placebo treatment. Virtually all in the various groups experienced elimination, or at least a reduction, in their condition or habit. Some people ascribe the success of Hypnotherapy to be down to the placebo effect and I believe that this may possibly be partially true, in certain situations. I have had many clients who report feeling better about their condition, even after just the consultation session i.e. before any actual treatment has taken place. This suggests
that by believing that they will get better, stimulates processes in the brain that actually make this happen, or at least start the process. One of the treatments used is the use of metaphors; usually created by the client. For example, a client suffering from I.B.S. (Irritable bowel Syndrome) reported a substantial lowering of discomfort after describing (under hypnosis) a white Gaviscon hand passing up and down her gut. If the client can imagine a metaphor for the problem, then it is not usually difficult to get them to imagine a metaphor for the solution; using the placebo effect. Where applicable, this would form a part of an overall treatment plan. In the Hypnotherapy world, we have a saying: ‘what the thinker thinks, the prover proves’, so the attitude that individuals bring with them, will impact on the outcome. I actually enjoy treating people who are cynical, but open-minded, about the effectiveness of Hypnotherapy. They tend to become the greatest advocates after successful therapy.
